Brentford vs Nottingham Forest Overview

00:00:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I kind of had mixed feelings about this one. I feel like Brentford have played a lot better this season. um But I feel like we've also played a lot worse this season and still won games. And I think it is a bit of a reality check, actually, um as to where we are and where Nottingham Forest are. And I will be praising Nottingham Forest in this episode because I thought they were such so well balanced. And that's what we said in the preview. but
00:01:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
We just saw it in front of our eyes at the weekend and I thought they were so well balanced. They've got strengths in every area and they've almost become this complete side this year under this manager. And that's reflected in their league position at the moment. So I just think that there's still some way for Brentford to go. And I think we found that out here um as I will be going through.
00:01:40

Let's look at the

Team News and Injury Concerns

00:01:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
team news anyway. We saw Ben me come in as expected might be the case. I thought he did okay. Um, I think it is noticeable now that he is on his way down in his career, which is no criticism of him. Um, at his age, I think he is a bit in decline. He struggles with his pace sometimes. I also feel like he is not used to playing out from the back.
00:02:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that is not a surprise. You know, he spent the majority of his career at Burnley under Sean Dyche. That is not a manager who encourages playing out from the back in the way that we are trying to play out from the back now. Even Brentford in previous years when Ben Mee was still so good a couple of years ago, we were a more functional side. You know, we we went a lot longer to Ivan Tony a lot of the time. And I think Ben Mee was slightly more comfortable with that, but I thought Ben Meade did okay. um I don't think he was hugely tested. It would worry me much more against a quicker centre forward. I think someone like Chris Wood suits him in many ways, although I do also think Chris Wood did get the better slightly of Ben Meade in the air. And I think it was noticeable as well, especially at goalkicks. Chris Wood was
00:03:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
over to Ben Mee's side rather than to Nathan Collins' side because he fancied himself more against Ben Mee than Nathan Collins. um But yeah, yeah did he he did OK. Apart from that, we saw the regular returns. So the likes of Brian and Boomer, Christian Norguard, all back in the team as we expected. I didn't really have any complaints of the Brentford lineup. I think if you're going to take anything from it, it is noticeable how little depth we have on the bench at the moment with injuries with the likes of Carvalho, Mads Rossev and Yarmoliuk, Leone. I would say senior players.
00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
on the bench or even even Yarmolek has limited senior minutes but he I think is now we can say one of the more established members of the squad that's a concern it's a concern in this type of game when we're not on the right side of the result and with half an hour to go he wants to change the game and it's difficult even Ross there he's not a player you'd bring on necessarily to change the game um I'd say a apart from Carvalho there's no other exciting talent on the bench that we could try and work with to try and change the game to try and offer a different threat
00:04:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
and and something i was surprised to see as well is paris makoma coming onto the pitch before yarmolek given they're in a similar position um but again i thought a bit like yarmolek in many ways i think makoma does have technical quality i think he's quite good on the ball um but again it's a it's a big um reality check it's a big um challenge to go from what he was last season.

Nottingham Forest's Tactical Analysis

00:04:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was playing at Bolton last season in league one, um, sustained an injury towards the end of the season. So that therefore missed the start of this season, but it is a big jump going from league one. He was, he was their young player of the year, I believe, but it is a big jump going from league ones to Premier League. But what we've seen of him so far is positive signs, I think. and And I would like to see him getting opportunities, but again I don't think this was the easiest game for him to come into.
00:05:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
In terms of Nottingham Forest, they actually changed their shape from what we usually see, and they went with a back five and looked very, very solid. The likes of Marilla and Milenkovic, who picked out in the preview, almost flawless, and they were also partnered by Marato as well, who came in to form the back five. Thomas Frank referenced that in his press conference, um, referring to it as a compliment that Forrest have seen our home record and they thought they need to come with a bit more stability. And you can't say that it didn't work. I think they have a perfect balance to their side, even going forward with the likes of Alanga Hudson, Adoy and Chris Wood as well. They're happy not to have the ball. I think Brentford had a lot of, a lot of possession in this game, but
00:06:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Forests were fairly comfortable. I would say I think they had us at Arms Day. They had us where where they wanted, especially after they got their goals. Even cells in goal who I didn't necessarily rate too much before this game looks much improved based on what we saw towards the end of last season. So I can't really fault Forests and the the way they came, it was always going to be a very, very difficult task for Brentford, particularly after we went behind but anyway after the break then I will be going through how the first half panned out.

Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast. and And let's get into the first half. I actually thought Brentford started pretty brightly here and we had the better chances. I think the pattern of play early on and also throughout was Brentford had quite a lot of corners. We had quite a lot of crosses into the box. And you know, normally that is something we thrive on, particularly when we're able to get the defenders forward, even even for long throws. That's something I didn't mention in the preview. shaer has a long throw, which we found out in the Newcastle game, um which I think is quite impressive when when when he gets the full distance on it. I think it is definitely longer than Ethan Pinnocks and maybe be up there with Jensons as well. But anyway, I thought that was a pattern of play. Lots of crosses, lots of corners.
00:08:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Forest ate this up. Forest are very happy to deal with it. Maybe it was another um consideration that led to them starting with a back five, just getting an extra body in the middle, that extra body being ah another big defender and dealing with those crosses into the box, that which I think they were quite comfortable with. The one chance that we did have early on came from Michael Dam's guard, who again, we'll talk about later, I think was our best player by far yet again.
00:08:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um

Nottingham Forest's Goal Breakdown

00:08:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
But if we are to criticise him, maybe he needs to add more goals to his game and maybe that's what's coming next. He did have the best chance of the first half, forcing a save out of Sells, but the shot perhaps didn't have as much power as it should have had on it. um And Sells was able to get down and quite comfortably save it in the end. Then Forrest got a goal of their own and they were quite efficient going forwards as well.
00:09:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
It came from Ola, Aina, the right back. um And this came from across as well. I think we saw the centre backs occupied and by Chris Wood in the middle. He's obviously their big danger. I think both of the centre backs are occupied by him and then King Louis Potter was kind of standing behind. But as the cross came in, I'm not really sure whether King Louis Potter knew that Aina was approaching.
00:09:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think if he did know, if he had more awareness and if he was looking around him, I think maybe he should have gone out to engage him. I don't think he needed to be that deep in the box. There was no other forest player around the center back to dealing with Chris Wood. Could Keen Lewis Potter have got out to Ina and engaged him? And I think that's a criticism we've given Brentford a lot this season. Even in the buildup to this goal, we allow too much space and we allow players to run at us.
00:10:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And maybe that's because we're confident that we can deal with the ball into the box. Or if they have a long shot, we're confident that nine times out of 10, it won't go in because it has to be a good shot to go in from that area. But we need to engage, I think in these moments, because there's a lot of quality in the Premier League and and and quality players will take advantage of those moments. And we put ourselves under unnecessary danger if we allow teams to get so close to our goal without us engaging. So I think initially one of the midfielders should have gone up to the player who put the ball in and then when the ball did come in, Keen Lewis-Potter needed to be more aware and get out to Olorina earlier and I think it could have been avoided if one or both of those things had happened. Moments before that, but Brentford were arguably lucky to still be level, big save for Mark Flecken to deny Chris Wood his only real clear-cut chance of the game, header on goal, perhaps it was
00:11:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
to centrally aimed. It

Second Half Challenges for Brentford

00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
was a very, very good save from Flecken, but there was still a lot of goal left in in the corner, which wiward would be frustrated that he did not direct it towards the corner of the goal. But it was a very, very good save anyway for Mark Flecken, especially live being in the stadium at the time. At halftime, then, I was impressed by not enough for us. I can't lie about that. I don't think Brentford were too bad.
00:11:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was quite a weird feeling that I don't get too often normally if we are behind at the break, particularly against a side that aren't traditionally one of the big six. I typically feel like we haven't done well enough and although although I've pointed out for the goal we could have done better, I do not think Brentford were very bad here at all. um my mind is casted back to perhaps the Ipswich game and in the Ipswich game, we did go in at halftime level, but we had been 2-0 down earlier on in that half and it was only two late goals has got back into the game and and I would quite comfortably say that Brentford were much worse against Ipswich than they were in the first half against Forrest on this occasion and I guess it just
00:12:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
In those circumstances, I think you've got to just admire the quality of the opposition and how well balanced they are. And clearly at the moment as well Brentford are affected by injuries. And I think that has to be a factor.
00:12:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
that we're taking in, you know, the question of full backs is often raised and we're doing a special transfer window um episode tomorrow and that will be spoken about again and maybe maybe Brentford should have done something about that um earlier on to avoid situations like this um because if we don't have the depth in certain areas, can we really be expected when Forester on their game when they've got their full squad?
00:13:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
can we really be expected to be surprised um by the fact that they looked better than us on the day. After the break anyway we will be going into the second half and how Brentford tried to find a way back into the game.

Hello and welcome to part two of your day, it's part three, sorry, of your daily Brentford podcast. It's going so quick, you see. ah Let's get into the second half. I thought Brentford started a bit slowly again, which I feel is a bit of a theme at the start of second halves. I feel like we are quite fast starters, often in the first half, but fairly slow to get going in the second. And I don't think that's the first time we've seen it this season. Maybe there's something to do with our preparation. Maybe there's something to do with, you know, how how much we maintain fitness levels over half time. But maybe something needs to be looked at there. I thought the game followed a very similar to pattern to the first half in which the first half I thought we started the better side. But
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Forrest ended stronger hence the goal and I think that discontinued second half with them being on top. Then we had the second goal and it was an unfortunate touch from Keen Lewis Potter just from a long ball up the field. Very loose, it ran away from him, fell to Alanga who finished into the bottom corner and again great finish from Forrest making the most of their chances, clinical, it's something we normally associate with Brentford's attack.
00:15:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And there was nothing Flecken could have done about it. Kilo's put up. Of course, it's an unfortunate mistake. I think it can happen to anybody. I think he's been brilliant at left back um for so long now, and it almost looked like a sense that Brentford had solved that position. But there was always something in the back of my mind that we could see him having a bad game.
00:15:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Simply because he is not a natural left back. He has only started playing there this season I think other teams may look at that and try to exploit that um I've already given him some criticism for the first goal and Clearly here. It's an error it could happen to anybody. I didn't I didn't think This is a specific error. We should be worrying about but it just goes to show that it is difficult playing out of position and it would be nice to brett for Brentford to at least have the option of a natural left back who's ready for first team football. I know we have Meg Homer um on the bench but I think it's widely accepted he's not played much Premier League football, he didn't play much for Southampton and and I think that's got to say something given where Southampton are.
00:16:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um but it is just really unfortunate. And this is something again, we'll be talking about in tomorrow's episode. So I won't re reveal anything now, but it is really unfortunate that Brentford have not got natural replacement to that position because it does not surprise me that KLP may have been a bit off the levels in this one. And you know, I don't really blame him. I still think overall he's done a good job and he's been a positive thing for this team in that position.
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah The yeah only other thing I want to talk about in this second goal, Ben Mee, I am not sure why he he almost ended up behind King Louis Potter and then that inadvertently left some space for Alanga to run into and I don't know why Ben Mee was there. The ball was clearly falling at King Louis Potter's feet. There's no reason for Ben Mee to get in that general area I wonder whether KLP may have even had a thought in his head you know why is Ben Mee coming over here is he coming for the ball and whether that you know created an element of doubt which ultimately forced a poor touch I don't know but I don't think Ben Mee needs to be out there I think he should be in position and I think it would have been harder then for Alanga to run across goal and get it into the corner but again Ben Mee's not played much this season he's stepping in for
00:18:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
injured players and I think we are more unfortunate in this regard rather than in left i left back. I just don't think we've done enough in the transfer window, but when it comes to centre backs, obviously eight we've we've lost Pinnock, we've lost Vandenberg. Perhaps you could say that maybe we should address the right back area so then I could have played at centre back, but overall I think unlucky in that area. And again, I think Bemme did okay, apart from perhaps this, where I don't really know why he's out there, but, you know, we'll give him the benefit of the doubt and and mistakes do happen. From there, it was a bit of a mountain to climb with Forrest just being so solid. They were they were happy to let Brentford have the ball. So Brentford looked on top for most of the rest of the game, but
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I never really got the sense that we were really still in the game. There was one chance that Chris Iyer felt him in the box. um He got a shot off. It

Michael Dam's Guard Performance Analysis

00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
was a decent effort, but it was almost straight at sales who I think ended up saving it with his face. and If that had gone in, maybe we could have put a bit of pressure on Forrest. Maybe their confidence would have would have come down a bit and maybe we we could have pushed for that second. but apart from that i thought we struggled i thought if that shot was perhaps either side of sales you're looking at a goal here perhaps a chance fell to the wrong person you wanted it to come to someone like brian or whissa but yeah we we can't put it all on that i i think brentford had a lot of other chances again lots of crosses into the box all dealt with comfortably from forest i thought that
00:19:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
the likes of Mabumo did start running out of ideas, even with all the corners that we had as well. It wasn't really paying off. and one player I do want to talk about is Damzgar because I think it was absolutely superb and we needed two of him and he did not deserve to be on the losing side at the weekend I thought every time he gets a ball he looks forward he tries to make something happen he's quick on the ball he's got great vision and you he's almost reminiscent at times of
00:20:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
someone like Kevin De Bruyne are at his best or someone like Cole Palmer and I think the only thing that's stopping him from getting on that level is the goal output. If he can get more goals then the sky's the limit for him and he at the moment he is playing above our level and if we can have more than one of him in the side.
00:20:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know that

Fabio Carvalho and Squad Depth Issues

00:20:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
would be brilliant because I think he is a reason for us scoring more goals this season ultimately I think and Boomer and Wisser have always been the finishes that they are they've always had that in them but I think what's come this season is the delivery and the amount of chances that Dam's guard creates, whether it's the assist or the pre-assist, it is absolutely brilliant from him. um And again, I thought if anyone was going to do something, if my eyes lit up, when anyone got on the ball, it was him and he did try to make a lot happen in in that second half, especially. um However, though, I think i think
00:21:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
The rest of the team did run out of ideas a little bit. um Like I said, I think we played worse this season than one. So I don't think it's the end of the world. I don't think it was a terrible performance. um It was arguably our best performance of the week, although I also thought it was okay at Chelsea. It was kind of similar to the Chelsea game in many ways, actually. And I think off on the back of this, we got to say the Nottingham Forest themselves are a genuine contender for Europe.
00:21:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
on this evidence, which is crazy to say considering they came 17th last season, but I guess they have spent the money, I suppose. A couple other things I want to touch on. Fabio Carvalho came on again. He wasn't able to change the game. I am getting early Damsgard vibes in terms of when Damsgard first joined the club. and And this isn't necessarily a positive thing.
00:22:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, we, ah we all know that it can be changed, turned around though, because dams guard this season has been absolutely brilliant, but I worry that Carvalia might be a little bit lightweight. And I think again, a couple of times, like we saw for the Chelsea goal last week, he got bashed off the ball and, you know, forest or away. And I think it is difficult for someone like him because he is someone who generally plays in the same position to dams guard. Often if he starts, he'll start instead of dams guard.
00:22:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think you're holding yourself to such high standards if you're starting ahead of him at the moment. And I think there is more to come from him. I think we've seen flashes, but I think at the moment he just seems a bit too lightweight. And I think hopefully in a year or two, he is someone that we see grow into the team, grow into the game. And, you know, he'll have more chances in in a few weeks, in the next few weeks to prove me wrong, especially given our current injury records. so He will have chances and he needs to be ready and you know I do want to start seeing a bit more from him now because I just don't think he's really been able to have the impact on games that he intends to.
00:23:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So I'll leave that on him there. Christopher Iyer, unfortunately, was seen on crutches after the game. So I

Injury Updates and Player Fitness

00:23:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't know what happened there. He seemed to he walked off the pitch. He seemed OK. I think it happened around the time Macoma came on for Yannelt. It was just going to be Macoma that was going to come when it looked like. um but then Ross said was called over last minute and and I came off so I don't know whether I signaled that he had a problem. Thomas Frank was um very much saying it was a precaution. He doesn't know the extent of any injury if there is an injury um at this stage but the worry is with Chris Fire we all know that
00:24:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
He has a history of being in and out of injuries, so it's not too good of a sign there. Mazaroslev also ended the game and actually got started very, very late on by Konak. He ended the game with blood on his face as a result of a collision with a forest player, but I would suspect, although I haven't had this confirmed, I would suspect that he will be okay. I think he just needed to be a bit you need to be tidied up um Brentford to simply did not have time to do that with the game in the 92nd or 93rd minute when that happened. and So we just decided to get us up on his set. So we'll see but I think he should be okay and again Mazzrocev is for all the criticisms that we give Mazzrocev he is someone who is usually fit and available for the club which is
00:25:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
someone we need because we we do need players that are available. Um, and we don't have enough of them.
