Brentford's Tactical Decisions Against Liverpool

00:00:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then let's get straight into it with the team news for this game. Yeehaw, Yamaluk,
00:00:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
in for Matthias Jenson was the only change from the city game. Thomas Frank said in his press conference that Jenson was a little weary after his city exploits. And I thought personally that we missed his ability to play passes from deep without him in the side. I thought Yarmulik did a good job. We've got a member Yarmulik is only 20 years old, I think to be starting Premier League games.
00:01:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
to be making an impact. And he is very much part of a good team performance for 90 minutes. I think he can only praise himself for that. I think Jensen, what he offers from deep is that ball out. He can potentially release the front two or three. I think with, you know, a nor guard in there without his technical ability. I feel like we lack that ball from deep. I think he does what from deep dams guard does from um ah more advanced areas. I think with the two of them and the team, it does allow us to be a little bit more creative going forwards. I was surprised to see a back four here actually. I was i thought Brentford would line up in a back five against a team like Liverpool. I thought um there's a clear difference between them and Manchester City at the moment in terms of quality and in terms of weaknesses. I think there were quite glaring witnesses. I know they won a six nil this weekend, but there are quite glaring witnesses with the city side.
00:02:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
in recent weeks, whereas Liverpool have looked like the complete, complete outfit and are clearly one of the favorites to win the Premier League this season. So I was surprised not to see a back five. Perhaps Thomas Frank didn't feel that we had the personnel to play a back five. We've only been me as the other natural centre back who is fit, a senior centre back, I should say. And of course, Ben, me has been injured until very recently as well.

Squad Changes and Bench Decisions

00:02:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
This meant that Playing a back four and playing a front two with an extra midfielder, as we did against City, meant that Kevin Shada missed out. I did feel that we would have better fitted bats from him in this game, I think, watching the Arsenal game and watching the City game, both of whom have come to G-Tech in recent weeks. If we were lacking anything, I thought it was the outball in terms of being able to get out of defence, and I thought that it could prove even more difficult against Liverpool, who I think are the best side in the league.
00:03:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think to an extent and that came to fruition, I think without Kevin Shada on the pitch until later on, we did struggle to get out a little bit. And I thought when Kevin Shada came on, we saw his ability in the air, his ability to go for jewels of the like likes of Kanate and Trent Alexander Arnold and his ability to win those flick-ons at times and get us up the field. And I think it's something that we lacked earlier. Running the game. And once again, I will say, I think Igor Tiago, if he wasn't injured, would have been perfect for this game.
00:03:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
in terms of getting us up the pitch with more regularity and perhaps bringing a break on Liverpool. um In terms of the bench, in terms of other team news, I was surprised that the likes of Rico Henry was unused again. He only played, of course, um three or four minutes in midweek against City. I was surprised that we didn't give him more minutes here. Perhaps it was to do with Keen Lewis Potter dealing with Mohamed Salah so well.
00:04:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we didn't want to disrupt that, but I was a bit surprised if we didn't give him some minutes here and maybe move Keen Lewis Potter over to right back like we did in midweek and obviously obviously during those few minutes, Keen Lewis Potter got an assist from that position. Fabio Carvalio is an interesting one. Unused again here. I suspect it may have been different if Brentford were losing the game earlier on than they than they ultimately were. I suspect It's difficult with him. but I think there's much more to come from him. I don't think we've seen his full potential. Yeah. I think if anyone's got to be really honest with themselves, he's probably disappointed slightly so far during his time at Brentford. But you know, we were having these conversations about the likes of Dam's guard a year or two ago. So I'm hopeful that he will come good. But yeah, it's another weekend where he's been, ah been unused as one of the
00:05:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
main senior players on the bench alongside Jensen, and Henry ah and um Kevin Shada and I suspect he would have been disappointed not to get on and I think when we do see him next and I suspect he's got more chance of getting on against the likes of Palace coming up I hope to see him take those chances and start to prove some people wrong who are giving starting to give him some stick and I just want to cover during the week Mas Ross there played this one despite there being some rumors of Wolfsburg in Germany being interested in him.

Transfer Rumors and Player Interest

00:05:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
They are looking at some kind of loan deal with I think conditions to make the deal permanent at the end of the season. My thoughts on that are that yes we can upgrade that area of the pitch. Mas Ross there is 26 years old now I don't think he's getting any better than he currently is.
00:05:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
What I would say about it, though, is that we need him for cover at the moment. He is doing a good job, actually, in recent weeks. His performances have definitely improved. I think, although we could do have an upgrade in that area of the pitch, I think unless anybody comes in, I think we need to keep Masros there because he's always available. i He should, as far as I know, class as a homegrown player, having been at Brentford since a young age.
00:06:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think he has um like i said come on in recent weeks he's always available the likes of Christopher Iyer who is injured currently you can't rely on Seth Vandenberg is currently needed at center back and Aaron Hickey is simply not fit yet so i think we do need him i think that could change if rumors of Michael Coyote from Florentina come to fruition He is a right back, he is only 20 years old. He played 26 times last season in the top flight in Italy for Fiorentina. Also would have played in Europe as Fiorentina are a team that have been in Europe.
00:07:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
He excites me. I think if this is to come to fruition and it, and, um, coyote himself was not in the match day score for Fiorentina this weekend, raising perhaps some questions that he's looking to move. So if this comes to fruition, I would be excited by it. I think given his age and profile and the fact he's got experience in the top flight in Italy, it very much reminds me of Aaron Hickey when he first joined the club, um, him having previous experience and obviously being in a similar position. So I think.
00:07:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
It would be a very positive signing and I would perhaps accept, um, Mads Rossev leaving. Um, if it meant Michael Coyote comes in, I think he's a younger profile, probably a higher ceiling than Mads Rossev. And I think he is someone that we can build the team around and build the defense around. I think if you think of the next 10 years, um, the defense that we could have.
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
with the likes of Aaron Hickey and Michael Coady at Fullback, if Coady's to come in, and the likes of Vandenberg and Nathan Collins at Centerback, they're all very young and they could be staples of the Brentford side in the next 10 years, so it's nice to see if but if this is to come to fruition Brentford building for the future. There's also been some rumors in the last week of Kevin Shada to Borussia Dortmund, and I think this is a really interesting one. I think the fact that Dortmund are interested,
00:08:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um is a sign of how highly rated Kevin Shada is if I'm honest because you know over the years the likes of Jude Bellingham, Jayden Sancho they no They've been known to take young talents in and allow them to blossom and become brilliant, brilliant players, Erling Harland being another one. So for him to be considered by Dortmund, I can see how I'd be interested and being from Germany as well. And with their track record, I think Brentford should be demanding upwards of 50, 60 million, if I'm honest, and to double or triple what we um but we paid to initially get him in.
00:09:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think for however much he's been inconsistent this season and however much he doubts at times, I think that he's got the attributes in terms of his height, his ability to leap, his ability to challenge for those long balls forward, his ability to be the out ball and his pace, his ability to get round players. I think he's got everything he needs to potentially become a very, very good player in the future. And I would suggest that Brentford would want to keep hold of him as far as possible, especially if it looks like the likes of Brian and Buma may depart in the summer. That's just what I want to talk about anyway, but in relation to some of the players, obviously both of them featured this weekend.

Liverpool's Lineup and Challenges

00:09:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we turn our attention to Liverpool, they started relatively as expected with Simakas prefer to Robertson at left back. Robertson anyway this season has struggled slightly and maybe
00:09:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
approaching the latter end of his career and Diogo Jota also missed this one despite scoring in midweek through injury which he so often suffered with I think otherwise they would have another fantastic attacker there who would score 20-30 goals a season potentially. After the break then I will be going through the game itself, the patterns of play, the chances both sides created and whether the ultimate result was ultimately a fair one.

Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast with myself, Daniel. So let's have a look at a game at the weekend and where it was ultimately won and lost um by Liverpool and Brentford. I thought the pattern of the game throughout was quite similar, actually. I thought Liverpool had most of the possession and territory. I thought Brentford defended well, however, and limited them to smaller chances. I actually thought um the game largely up until the 90th minute was rather dull from a neutral perspective, which I thought is a is a positive thing for Brentford. and The fact that it didn't have that edge that the city game had in midweek, I thought we gave a lot of chances away in midweek actually. um Despite salvaging a draw, I accept that we also created more. um But on another day, you know, perhaps that is
00:12:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
We took a risk there and, and, and, you know, it could it could have gone badly on another day with, the with the, um, profile of the attackers that city had. I knew that in this one, we would have had to tighten up given that Liverpool was such a brilliant team this season. And I felt we did that by and large, I thought in the first half, the one that Liverpool perhaps should have scored when Salah squared it for Gackpo.
00:12:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
who didn't get the right contact on the effort at goal. Flecken came out to try and close it down and then set Vandenberg. jockeyed it out of play, good awareness from him to allow it to go out of play. I thought Gackpo probably should have finished that one. Otherwise, I felt that Brentford kept Liverpool at bay quite well, which is why it was a surprise after the game for me to see that Liverpool had 37 shots on goal in total, which is a Premier League record for an away side since they began collecting this data.
00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I felt it was surprising in terms of it did not feel that Liverpool had this element the dominance over this level of dominance over Brentford. Clearly they had more possession and territory, but I didn't feel like they did an awful lot with it. But at the same time, looking a bit deeper into Brentford and how they perform, I thought this was unsurprising as well in some ways, given that Brentford typically allow long shots, we typically allow players to run.
00:13:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
towards the penalty area and unleash a long effort. And we particularly, and we specifically rely on the fact that it would have to be a very, very good effort for, for those kinds of efforts to go in. And I think relatively this is a pattern throughout the season. Brentford are a team that who do concede a lot of shots, no matter who we're playing against. Um, but we don't necessarily concede.
00:14:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
the biggest chances and that's another reason why Mark Fleckening goal has made amongst the most saves in the Premier League. I thought that Liverpool's total of 3.43 XG per foot mob equates to a lower XG per shot given that they took so many and again the fact that Liverpool only had eight shots on target out of the 37 efforts demonstrates that Brentford did keep them at bay and kept them away from goal where it mattered for the most part, ah like I said, apart from maybe that Gackpo effort and obviously the goals late on. I thought from the efforts, at from distance, I thought Zobberslide's effort in the first half which hit the crossbar and Trent Alexander-Arnold's effort in the second half where it whistled just wider the post. I thought that was probably the closest Liverpool came until they eventually got the goal and I think that is a warning.
00:15:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
to Brentford that playing the way they do, allowing those long shots against top, top players does mean that sometimes, you know, these players are capable of producing a fantastic, you know, the fantastic effort that is required for those efforts to result in goals. Having said that, Brentford got away with it. um I want to praise King Louis Pottery in this one.
00:15:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
for keeping Mohammed Salah quiet it is not very often in the Premier League this season that he does not score or assist which was the case here and I think this was King Louis Potter's ultimate test as a left back and I thought he passed it with flying colors he looks very good defensively and the fact that the only weakness I can see in him often is his final pass his final shot it's makes me actually feel that perhaps Keen Lewis Potter is more suited to a full-back role full-time which is I guess it's something that Brentford have stumbled on to an extent he was not tried there really last season um whereas this season he's covered that role for us really really well um it's an interesting debate to have I wonder what Keen Lewis Potter himself would feel about that um
00:16:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I also wonder whether he could maybe make the switch to right back when Rico Henry returns um and and how that would look given that he's right footed and it would be a more natural for a full back to be on the right hand side and of course at the four or five minutes he's played on that right hand side so far on Tuesday night against City he produced an assist for Norga to head home. so I am quite excited to potentially see what it would look like with King Liz Potter at right back and Rico Henry at left back when Rico is ready to play more minutes. But I wanted to praise him here for keeping Mohamed Salah quiet and for doing so,

Brentford's Offensive Struggles

00:16:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
so well. He he does he deserves that new contract of his and I don't think anyone would have seen it coming um him at left back doing so well um this time a year or two ago. So very, very well done to him here. I thought in terms of Brentford going forwards themselves,
00:17:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think we created enough. I thought Brantford lacked an out ball with no Kevin Shada up front, no Matthias Jenson to ah spray those passes from deep. And I thought we found it difficult to get forward with any kind of regularity. I thought Brantford's biggest chance at getting ahead in the game came in the first half when Roslev squared the ball across the area and Damsguard just could not bundle home. I think the only criticism I have a dams guard is that perhaps he's lacking a bit of a goal scoring instinct. I feel like a striker in that scenario maybe would have made more of an effort to really get into the back post. They would have gambled, they would have slid in to try and get their foot on something, hoping and anticipating the ball coming across goal. And I feel like dams guard was a bit late to react, didn't really anticipate the ball coming in. Um, and you know, if he had done so,
00:18:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
If he had got any contact on the ball, it would have been 1-0 Brentford and it would have been a very interesting rest of the game. But I thought, you know, as as usual, Dan Scott had a good good game in general, I think, if he is to add to his game, if he is to really take that next step, if he really is to be seen with the best players in the league, I think he's just got to add a bit of bit more goal scoring to his game and it's chances like this, I'm looking at him potentially finishing off.
00:18:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Big shout out to Roslev again here as well, almost getting on the end of an assist. I feel like he's almost had a goal involved in our last three or four league games now. And it's good to see him being positive. It's good to see him being involved in actions in our attacking third. I want to talk a little bit about Brian and Boomer. I thought he had the ball in a lot of promising situations at times here, but regularly shot straight at Alison. I think it happened two or three times. There was another occasion as well where he was running clear. It looked like the shot was on with his right foot, but instead he tried to cut back inside and and um the ball was taken off him. Ultimately, i I think we've seen days like this from Brian and Boomer before. And again, if there is a criticism of him, I feel like it is sometimes in these games that we have less chances. He,
00:19:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
At times can be prone to not making the most of the chances he is given. I think we do see that regularly from him, him cutting in, him playing that shot over to the goalkeeper's near post or towards the far post. It doesn't quite pay off and he doesn't really force the goalkeeper um into as difficult save as I'd want him to. um Of course, there are times like against Arsenal.
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
where it works and it goes in but I feel like more often than not he just does not make um enough of those promising situations and does not cause or ask enough questions. Is it at times too predictable as well? um We all know that he likes to cut in and shoot on his left foot. Can he get more bend and curl on it into the far corner? I'm being picky because I know he's such a good player and I know um he has got the capabilities to score in those situations and that We do need him to show up on it on days like this if we are to get something out of a very, very difficult game. Looking ahead to the second half, I thought, by contrast, we didn't really make many substitutions. We couldn't impact the game too much off the on the bench, although we brought Jenson on. and We did bring Shada on too. And we were able to go a bit longer. and We were able to win those flick-ons, I thought.
00:20:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
maybe Shada for Janelle was the wrong decision, knowing that Liverpool would come at us late in the game. Do we really want to add an extra attacker on the pitch? Should we perhaps have taken Wisser off of Shada? Potentially, I feel like maybe we should have seen the late Liverpool one start coming and maybe we would want that extra man in midfield for the conclusion of the game based on that.
00:21:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
flip side it's easy to say after the game and you can admire um Brentford for trying to go for the win and bring in an extra attacker onto the pitch. I thought Liverpool on the other hand you can see their substitutes you can see their strength in depth being able to bring on the lights of Kiesa and Darwin Nunes all of whom caused problems Nunes I thought gave them a focal point up front and although I felt the first goal came from an unfortunate deflection, um which bounced a Liverpool player. I feel like if Brentford weren't so deep, if we did not allow Liverpool so much territory, maybe this would not have come about. I thought, I think deflections are bound to go it in Liverpool's favour now and then if they are to you know put on so much pressure throughout the 90 minutes. And it was unfortunate.
00:22:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
The goal was really unfortunate. I felt sorry for the Brentford players. I felt that you know they deserve more for their efforts over 90 minutes. Darwinianes himself as well is not always as potent as he was on this occasion.
00:22:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we've got to be aware he's done it against us before and it is such a shame to come so far into the game having put so much effort into the game and done largely well um for it to end like this. I don't think the second goal would have happened if it wasn't for the first. I thought at that point having conceded with only three or four minutes to go, Brentford knew that they really had to go for it. We had to get men forward and ultimately we were overloaded for the second. I think overall looking at the game I think the disappointment comes on coming so far for nothing.

Looking Ahead: Upcoming Home Games

00:23:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think if we look at the last week as a whole, including the city game as well, I think there's been positive signs, especially when it comes to facing the other members of the big six at home. I thought at different times we've shown that we can defend well. We've shown that we can limit the chance to the opposition. We've shown that we do have a threat on the break. We can get forward and on another day when the likes of Brian and Buma is on it, as we know he can be.
00:23:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
um that we can perhaps nick a goal in those situations and the fact that, you know, we've played the top three at home now um in Arsenal, Forest and Liverpool. We've not got any points out of those, but we have got a point out of City. It gives me confidence that when the likes of Manchester United, when the likes of Tottenham, when the likes of Villa and when the likes of Chelsea come to the G-Tech, that we can get something out of those games because those sides, you know, can be got at.
00:23:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
this might maybe technically be being a little bit better than Brentford on paper so nothing too disheartening from this one I think it's as disappointing that we couldn't hold on for a few more minutes otherwise we would be talking about a great point another great point in the G-Tech twice in the space of four or five days so I think good effort overall That will do for today. We are going into the Palace Away game with some confidence, I think, based on recent performances. So thank you for listening to the Daily Brentford podcast. We hope you've enjoyed today's
