Brentford's Tactical Approach

So then let's go straight into looking at the team news for the game against Liverpool at the G-Tech at the weekend. I can't help a feeling for this one. We have to look at going with the back five. This is something we have typically done against the bigger sides this season and most definitely in previous seasons. I feel like The usual exception to that is when a big six side is slightly off form. Obviously Manchester City from Tuesday night, they are not the Manchester City that they have been over the past few years. And so it proved, I think when the pattern of the play and particularly breakfast come back, I do not think we would have seen that in previous years when City have been at their best and they were able to suffocate teams and suffocate games. I think here we,
00:01:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
will likely have to go the backfire. I think what worries me about Liverpool is their ability going forwards. I think they are the best team in terms of attacking and they have so many players it like Sisala, Jota, Diaz, Gackpo, Nunez, Kiesa, all who can be dangerous on their day in terms of going forwards and they have just so many options in that area of the pitch.
00:01:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the issue for Brentford if we do go with a back five is who becomes that third centre back. Of course you saw Ben Mee return to the squad on Tuesday night on the bench and we could see him starting alongside Vandenberg and Collins or could we see Mads Rossev move over as ah as ah as a wide centre back alongside Collins and Vandenberg. That would maybe cause other issues elsewhere in the pitch. Obviously, at left wing back, we can expect to see Keen Lewis Potter, or perhaps even Rico Henry, and then at right wing back, could Keen Lewis Potter move over if Henry's playing? Will Brian and Bummo move there? And maybe we can try and be more offensive that way in terms of being able to get on the break with some regularity as well. Talking about being offensive, I think,
00:02:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
This may be one where Kevin Scharder needs to start. Now, ordinarily, I would say this is a perfect game for Eagle Tiago. We need an outlet. i think I think we may struggle. I can see it's being penned in potentially.
00:03:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we are trying to play out from the back, if we're just trying to break through Dammsguard, Boomer and Whistler, I think it can be high risk. I think I look back to the Arsenal game and the way we were trying to get out of defensive situations there. And I thought it was a little bit risky, a little bit dangerous at times. And again, I think if we do that against Liverpool, we could get punished with with the attacking players that Liverpool have. so I do think perhaps Kevin Schade needs to start here. He offers an outlet in terms of his height and his ability to win flick-ons. And I think he is the only available attacker who is has that profile and is able to do that um whilst Igor Tiago is out injured.

Lineup Possibilities & Tactical Adjustments

00:03:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So could we move Brian Abuma to right wing back? Could we play Kevin Schade alongside Whissa? Because otherwise I can't see how Kevin Schade fits in the side given that
00:04:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Buma and Whistler are very, very unlikely to be dropped. That would allow, you know, Buma and Whistler to work up front, Dam's guard to work in behind, Keen Lewis Potter perhaps to bomb down the left, and Brian and Buma to make the right-hand side his own and then When we've got the ball, it can look more like a front three or front four. But when we're in defence, you know, we are much more structured. And I do expect Norgar to line up alongside one of, you know, Orienson. I think that's an interesting discussion to have as well. I think, you know, offers a bit more defensive solidity, but it's not quite good, not quite as good on the ball.
00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Jensen, on the other hand, I think, you know, is is able to play those long diagonals and is able to play those balls out towards Kevin Schader if need be. So it's a very interesting one. I can equally see Kevin Schader not starting um this game. He doesn't tend to necessarily when we only play with a front two, but there is certainly plenty for Thomas Fragg to think about.
00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
someone else we could also see who is waiting to make his first Premier League star is Rico Henry. I think we will see this happen sooner rather than the later. I am very excited, very very excited for him, um for him to make that first start. um the The worry is if we put him in straight there against the likes of Mo Salah, is it a bit too much of him too soon after being injured for so long. He's still clearly getting up to speed and being up on that side against Mo Salah is probably the most difficult assignment you can get in the Premier League. I do, though, think that if, you know, Rico Henry has any strengths, it's um in his defensive ability. And I think, you know, even
00:06:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
80 90 fit that you know he he he may be able to do a job in this game and then that would maybe potentially free up keen Lewis Potter to be an option further up further up the field again perhaps even a right back as we saw in the late stages of the city game which led to the assist for nor guards header In terms of Liverpool, all the usual suspects are available.

Liverpool's Form & Squad Analysis

00:06:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
The likes of Salah, Jota, Diaz, Nunez, Gackpo, all dangerous in forward areas. Jota, recently back from injury, scored their goal in midweek against Forrest. It would not surprise me to see him starting here. And I think he is very dangerous in terms of his ability in front of goal. I think even in the air for a man who's not very tall,
00:07:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
he is very very strong and I think he presents a danger um anywhere in that penalty box if Jota is starting and the likes of Salah we know he always seems to start for Liverpool and will be a danger again here we've always got to watch out for the delivery from Trent I guess on the flip side is he a bit vulnerable in defence is Andy Robertson on the other side coming towards perhaps the end of his career I've heard a few murmurings about that this season that, you know, perhaps he's in decline, so perhaps those fallback areas, particularly someone like Brian and Bumo and Andy Robertson, perhaps that is an area Bradford could get some joy.
00:07:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
The likes of Gravenberg has had a lot of poor dates this season for settling into that number six role, doing really, really good job for Liverpool. Like some McAllister alongside him, Jobbers Lyle, Curtis Jones, whoever it is, all having a good season, all looking solid. Virgil van Dijk in defence, commanding at the back, Allison back in goal after having a few games out not so long ago through injuries. So I think it's safe to say Liverpool are looking in good strength availability wise ahead of the meeting can after the break then I'll be going for our previous meetings against Liverpool how I think it will pan out on this occasion and given my own importer predictions

Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast as we preview the game against Liverpool at the G Tech this weekend. So then Liverpool come into the game four points clear at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand following an earlier postponement this season of their game against Everton. This is despite Liverpool having drawn their last two league games against Manchester United and then in midweek against Forest.
00:10:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
and losing a game in the Cup against Tottenham in the Carabao Cups in the final first leg. ah That means the only game they've won in the last four is at the weekend in the FA Cup against at Trenton Stanley. Last reversed fixture was 2-0 to Liverpool at Anfield earlier this season.
00:10:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brentford typically have a very, very poor record at Anfield. We've not never won, never got a point at Anfield. It was Goldstrom, Diaz and Salah earlier this season in a game where Brentford were okay. We competed to a certain level, but we never really liked getting back into the

Brentford vs Liverpool: Historical Matches

00:10:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
game. And I thought it was a relatively comfortable win for Liverpool in Arnes Lot's first home game.
00:10:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Having said that, at the GTEC, we have had some more yeah um we've had some more success over the years with a 3-3 draw. That was a very famous game in and our first Premier League season, having gone, I believe, 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 behind that afternoon, and a 3-1 win at the GTEC.
00:11:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
couple of years ago with Brian and Bumo scoring a late goal on that occasion to seal all the victory so Brentford can do it we've got previous at the GTEC Liverpool will be very aware of that but are we facing a different Liverpool beast this time of course last year the game the GTEC was a 4-1 defeat I think worst um home result last season um With Ivan Tony just getting the consolation um as Liverpool ran right and Brentford just did not defend well enough that day. As I said in the first part, I think this will be a very difficult game, our most difficult home game this season. I think Liverpool quite clearly are the best team in the country at the moment, probably the best team and in Europe.
00:12:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we'll see our defense tested more than at any other time, forested well against them the other night, but as the game went on, as we got into the last 15, 20 minutes, Liverpool were report very much on top and Matt Salves, the goalkeeper, had to keep them in the game and I expect Flecken to have to make similar you know a similar number of saves if Brentford had to get anything out of it on this occasion. I think it's as ever important for Brentford to be able to break forward themselves, give us get give the defence a break and you know ask some questions of Liverpool going in the other way. I don't think they're...
00:12:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
completely impenetrable going and the other way. I think there are weak weaknesses in the squad, I think, um as I refer to what Robertson and Alexander-Arnold, perhaps not the best defensively. Robertson, perhaps a little bit on decline this season. Can we hurt them? I do believe that Brentford can hurt anybody.
00:13:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, if the likes of Whistler and Brumeau Dam's Guard are fit and firing and we can get them into positive positions. I think that that's the key here. Um, I think it will be very easy for Brent to be camped on on the edge of our

Defensive Strategies Against Liverpool

00:13:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
box, um, defending Liverpool attacks. And I think we can only do that for us for a certain amount of time before I think pressure will tell. And I think we need to be able to break Liverpool's lines with some regularity.
00:13:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
There is one particular type of goal that I am very keen for Brentford not to concede um this time round. I think we saw one earlier this season. I think the Diaz goal at Anfield. I think we saw one potentially the G-TECH last season and possibly the season before that as well. And that is a Liverpool goal from our own corner. And now surely Brentford have learned from this now. we How it normally goes is,
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
We all know how Brentford set up from corners. We leave everyone forwards. and The deepest man is normally somewhere on the edge of the box, just outside the area. And there it's better to be the ones that sweep up if Liverpool get first contact and are able to clear the ball. What I think has happened against Liverpool in particular is we take corners. If Liverpool get first contact on their corners, the likes of Salah, Diaz, whoever else is in the front three,
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
are already sprinting the minute that the first contact is made. And we don't tend to anticipate the situation as well. And like I don't necessarily blame us for this. I think Liverpool are the only team in the Premier League who can break in this way and do it with such intensity and score these type of goals. But I think by now we need to be aware of this and we need to prevent it from happening.
00:14:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course, if we go home, we play. We've got the prospect of him being the last man back from corners and with his pace, I feel a little bit more confident there, but we need more than just him. If that if they are to break and there's to be two or three of them on the break.
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
we need more than just Rico Henry and cover there. So even if Brentford uncharacteristically leave and an extra man on the halfway line, I think it's something we might need to do for this one, um because I think conceding that type of goal from our own set piece would be extremely, extremely disappointing if we were to do that again. And I do not accept i do not expect any team to concede this type of goal regularly against the same opponent, because I think you know you need to learn from your previous mistakes Having said that, I think if Brentford stay in the game, if we are competitive, if we defend well, if we don't see any sloppy goals, then it's essentially a free hit um with more winnable games, particularly away from home coming up in the next few weeks. I think it's
00:15:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
a good chance to see another brilliant game with G-Tech and I expect there to be a brilliant atmosphere and you know we can have our own say on the title race if we are to get a result I think things at the top will get very interesting and if Brentford were to get a result I think the belief would start flowing after the City game you know that maybe we can do something to these European places going forwards and I think it's An exciting game. i look I look forward to these games. I think, you know, typically over the years we have been um competitive. I would be a bit worried if Brentford set up here to go toe to toe like we did against Manchester City. I think Liverpool on the much better side at the moment. So with that in mind, it's my time to give my prediction.

Match Predictions & Expectations

00:16:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Unfortunately, I can't go with the Brentford result here. I think I've got to back Liverpool.
00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'm going to go 3-1 Liverpool. I do just have some concerns that defensively we won't be strong enough. i think we do give away chances this season. We're not as solid perhaps in terms of preventing chances in the first place as we have been in previous seasons. I think even if we are doing pretty good on that front, I think the likes are sad. I can always produce something. And that's a difficulty against Liverpool above all others. I do think we'll score. Our back Brian and Buma to get back on the score sheet after not scoring in midweek against Manchester City. I think
00:17:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
we will threaten on the break. I think he will have some joy against the likes of Andy Robertson, but ultimately I think Liverpool will create the most chances and therefore get the most goals and head back to Liverpool with three points. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think that's an entirely unreasonable prediction given both sides form and how Liverpool have been this season, which I think is a very, very good, and I think this is a very good test for Brentford to see where we're at at the moment, at the G-Tech against the very best. I think we said this after the first half of the season, you know, the second half of the season sees a lot of the best teams come to Brentford away from home. So I think, you know, this will be a real um a test of how strong we are um at the G-Tech at the weekend, I think.
00:18:15
