This is your Midweek Match Preview, where we discuss renewing acquaintances with Newcastle following our 4-2 win at the Gtech just over a week ago.  With the possibility of making history in sight, we ask whether this is the biggest game of the season so far, discuss how Thomas Frank should manage players' workload, and give our all important predictions.

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Brantford Podcast with myself, Daniel, where today we will be looking ahead to arguably our biggest game in the season so far as we beat meet Newcastle United again for the second time in two weeks, this time at St. James's Park in the Carabao Cup quarterfinal. Just before we get going, guys, we're a brand new company, so we're looking for your support over the coming season and beyond as we look to bring you the best and most in-depth coverage across the entire network.

Brentford's Strategy and Motivation

00:00:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then let's get into the preview. I think the first thing I want to say is that I really, really hope Brentford go full strength for this one, not only to repay the traveling fans who are going up there on a Wednesday night,
00:01:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
but to also reiterate how much a successful cut run would mean for the history of the club. Brentford have only ever been in a major semi-final once, which was actually a few years ago in our promotion season, um where we lost to Tottenham in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup that year. Difference was that was only a one-legged semi-final, it was away from home.
00:01:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it was in the COVID season where fans were not able to attend. And if we're really honest with ourselves, we probably had other priorities that season with promotion on the cards. This time, I just think Brentford, a much better place to really go for this. um You know, we're it we're in mid table in the Premier League. It doesn't look like we're going to be going down.
00:01:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we're comfortably better than the very bottom teams in the Premier League. um I do appreciate the Newcastle will feel exactly the same way about this. But I do not see a single reason why Brentford should not go for this with everything we have. um And at least if we lose to say that, you know, we we did go for it of everything. um We didn't hold back. We didn't rest players and, um you know, we gave it our best chance. i think now we've got this far in the cup beating you know a league two team a league one side and a championship side along the way you know we're at the business end now and you know we're potentially three games for Wimberley um obviously a quarter final a two-legged semi-final um and i don't know why we shouldn't believe obviously i know with all the sides in the competition it is likely to be a big side if we are to get to the semi-final that would be up against but
00:02:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, we're here for a reason. We we'd be in certain teams on our day before. Um, it will be difficult. Of course it will be, but you know that there is got to be an element of ambition. Um, Brentford are not going to be winning the league, um, the premier league, but.
00:03:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know there's there's no reason we can't win ah win you know a couple of one-off games here and there um and really see what we can do although I do appreciate it as an outside chance I think we need to go for it with everything we've got Hopefully I have then persuaded you. um I hope I persuaded Thomas Frank to. I am a little bit concerned. He won't see it in the same way with fixed to congestion. I don't think he will go super weak, but I do think he may make some changes and he may rest some players for the weekend. and He may manage certain players load.
00:03:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um We will see, of course, we've only played lower division sides in the Cup so far. and We've made changes in all of those. The likes of Jadon Macomb has been starting. Hakonvald and Marston has been starting in goal. We've seen more of the likes of Trevitt, Konaak, Jarmonic started those games, even though he's but he's been starting in the league recently anyway. and Ben Mee, I think, has also started all of those games. However, I... do you think for this one i would go full strength i would treat it like a lead game and i wouldn't just treat it like any lead game i would treat it like a very important one um i do suspect though my inkling is we'll see something in between from thomas thang i think he'll recognize that the opposition of new castle are much stronger to any to anything we face so far
00:04:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think he will go stronger in the side he's put out against the likes of Sheffield Wednesday. um But I do think he will hold some players in reserve, some players that we usually start with a view to bringing them off the bench if we're sitting in the game or with a view to them being fully fresh and available for Nottingham Forest at home at the weekend.
00:05:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Just judging by the Chelsea game, obviously Dam's Guard and Whissa, we saw them both come off early, so I would expect them both to start here. and Some changes that I think Brentford could and probably should make is is to bring Christopher Iyer and Vitalia Nelt back into the starting 11 after they started on the bench at the weekend.

Tactical Lineup Considerations

00:05:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I would also suggest that Brentford go back to a back four for this one, I think Newcastle, although on paper again,
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've only recently previewed Newcastle just a couple of weeks ago before our Premier League meeting, um that they probably are a technically slightly better side, but you know we're in and around them in the league. They're not on the same form as the likes of Chelsea, ah I think we can we will feel like we can go a bit more toe to toe with them.
00:05:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
with a back four here so that poses the question I think someone like Seth Vandenberg could be given a rest here and I wouldn't be opposed to that I think Christopher Iyer in my mind is a slightly better fullback he if offers slightly more going forwards in terms of being able to drive forward he goes on those runs sometimes where he can he can drive forward on that right hand side, so I would bring him in for set Vandenberg and then obviously you've got the centre back pairing of Collins and Pinnock with Keen Lewis Potter at left back. I would probably stick with Norguard and then slot Vitaly and Elte alongside him with Yarmoliot dropping to the bench. I think I would then keep Dam's guard in, keep Brian and Bumo in,
00:06:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
keep wiss it in and then I'm hoping for the return of Igor Tiago and I think that would be the best 11 for me obviously reflecting in goal as well it is up and down whether Igor Tiago would in fact be ready to start Thomas Frank said he's hopeful he'll be back on Wednesday I would I would rate our chances more I think if he wasn't aside again Same reasoning as I said for Chelsea, I think this is still a difficult away

Newcastle's Drive for Victory

00:07:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
game. I still think we will need to mix up our style a bit more. I think we will need to be more robust and I'm hoping having Norguard and Janelle in front of a back four will help us do that. um And I feel like having Tiago up front will give us that out ball in terms of being able to go along towards him and
00:07:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
We saw what he did to Fabian Cher when he came on. um you know he He definitely ruffled his feathers. and And that ultimately led to a goal for Nathan Collins, even though him and Fabian Cher, when they went up for that free kick, did not make contact with it. um So that's what I would do here again in terms of Newcastle.
00:08:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the appetite up in the northeast is that they really, really want this. I think they really, really want a big cut win. Of course, they got to the League Cup final, I think a couple of years ago now where they lost to Manchester United in the final. They tend to go very strong in these games and a big cup win would also be very welcome.
00:08:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
under their current owners who obviously came in in the last few years with big budgets have improved aside have given them hope but there has been near misses um but no cup success so far so I do expect Newcastle to really go for this which in a way is why I do really feel that Brentford need to match them if we have ambitions of going through here After the break then I will be discussing previous meetings even though they've been very very recent, and the the latest one anyway, um and how I think this one will pan out.

Historical Match Recaps

00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast who of course Brentford only faced Newcastle one and a half weeks ago at the time of recording coming out for two winners. That was our first victory versus Newcastle in the Premier League which saw Brentford complete the set.
00:10:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
in beating every Premier League side we have faced. I did want to point out, however, that Brentford did face Newcastle the last time we reached the quarterfinal of the Carabao Cup as a championship team in 2021, winning 1-0 through Josh De Silva to set up a Spurs semi-final at a behind closed doors Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which obviously we went on to narrowly lose.
00:11:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle will be looking to bounce back here from recent defeat and they will be determined to be much improved from their display at the G-Tech just over a week ago. Their routine 4-0 victory at the weekend against Leicester City and an extra day to prepare this one will likely stand them in good stead. So then I think it's a difficult one when you play a team twice in a row. I think Eddie Howe was very very disappointed and with how Newcastle defended particularly at the G-Tech and they weren't themselves that day and I think there's been a little bit of a running theme at Newcastle where they've tended to play well against the very best teams but then they're not necessarily up for the games against the maybe lesser sides
00:12:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think this one might be one that they're up for anyway with the prospect of a Wembley final not too far away down the horizon now and you know the prospect of a trophy as well which the city of Newcastle so desperately crave. I also think that Eddie Howe and the Newcastle side have done their team talk for themselves um with the 4-2 defeat at the G-Tech because they will know that they are better than that and they will fiercely want to prove that they are better than that and therefore I don't think Brentford should be sitting here and looking at this one as a repeat performance and you know will be fine I don't think that um we should expect Newcastle to turn up in the same way I think they'll be much much stronger
00:12:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not least because the game is at St.

Fan Attendance and Support

00:13:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
James's Park and we've spoken a lot on this podcast and it's well-documented Brentford Struggles on the road this season. It is a good atmosphere at St. James's Park. It's a very big stadium. It will be a night game. It will be an evening where the fans will definitely be up for it. Unfortunately, I don't think there are likely to be many Brentford fans travelling to Newcastle on a Wednesday night. The game is a course on TV in the UK. It is a work night.
00:13:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is a long way to Newcastle, it's our furthest away day in the Premier League, so I think it's a great shame that there will unlikely be too many Brentford fans making the trip up. Of course, our league game against Newcastle away is also scheduled on a Wednesday night later in the season. I feel if Brentford are to get a result here, first of all, I hope it's not affecting them, but if it is affecting them, I think our poor run on the road doesn't need to be looked at in terms of a collective. I think this game needs to be looked at in isolation. I thought we played okay against Chelsea and I think if we produce a similar performance here then the game will be tight at the very least and there is a chance we could get something out of it. I think Brentford need to find a mix between being more robust and still creating chances. Something that I think we found in the second half against Chelsea and I think that needs to be the standard for the 90 minutes here.
00:14:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And even though we're playing with the back four with Yudnal and Norgard hopefully protecting that back four. I think that gives us a little bit of extra security. I expect us to be a little bit more robust now. I don't expect to persist with playing out from the back as much as we have been in certain games. I think how we did it against Chelsea was almost perfect. And I thought like maybe we can try it now and then if it works great, if it pays off great, but don't take too many risks, not in those deep areas. You know, if we're taking risks far up the field, far away from our own goal,
00:15:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is fine. You need to take risks in football. You're not going to win without taking risks, but taking risks sometimes so close to our own goal and conceding possession so high up is not always a risk worth taking. And I think that's something Southampton have definitely found also this season. And obviously they've now sacked their manager. Um, we obviously need to keep individual mistakes to a minimum. That is something that's crucial in every game. And I think,
00:15:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's no, it's no different here. That's going to have to happen. And I think by Thomas Frank, hopefully picking a familiar team, picking a team with not too many changes from our premier league side. Um, I think that will help because with familiarity breeds confidence and and breeds, you know, um, that they're comfortable playing in that shape and they can't all playing with each other and there's relationships all over the field.
00:16:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think there's no better time to get in the way when it gets top of opposition. Obviously, the semifinal would be a two-legged affair and Brentford would have every chance if we can get a positive result in the home leg at the G-Tech.

Predictions and Penalty Confidence

00:16:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
We don't get there, though, without managing to win at St. James's Park. Of course, there has to be a winner on the night. The game will go straight to penalties if need be. Brentford have a pretty good penalty record, so I wouldn't say no to that prospect sitting here right now.
00:16:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, although I think Nick Pope as well, um, although it won't be Nick Pope, it will be Martin de Brafker. And I should have mentioned that at the beginning, um, Nick Pope was missing, um, at the weekend for Newcastle. So they will have their second choice keeper, Martin de Brafker in goal. Obviously it's not clear whether they've had a Martin would also be in goal for Brentford. Um,
00:16:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then, my prediction time. I do have a slight fear, unfortunately, that Newcastle will take this game slightly more seriously than Brentford. They've had slightly longer to prepare as well. They're at home and they're a different beast at home, in my opinion, or at least we're a very different beast away from home in not the best way. um so my prediction unfortunately is probably a 3-1 Newcastle victory with Igor Tiago why not let's hope he's fit to start but Igor Tiago to get off the mark for Brentford I think we will leave it there for today I very much hope for a win here I think it would be absolutely massive and I hope that I can
