Today we finish reading the second letter from Peter with Chapter 3 and begin the Book of Hebrews, Chapter 1.

Today we will read about the difference in how God views time and how we view time. That God is not slow to keep His promises, but that His timing is perfect. We can be sure that Jesus WILL RETURN. While it might seem like more than 2,000 years later is too long a time to wait for His return, we need to understand that God's delay in calling for Jesus' return has purpose: to give time for as many people as possible to come into salvation, rather than suffer from His eventual judgment. God does not want anyone to die, but for all to be saved.

In our discussion for daily application we will discuss the importance of us to continue to do the good work that God has for us to do since our work deals directly with helping to bring people into knowledge and acceptance of God's plan of salvation through Jesus. It is necessary for us to have a sense of urgency to do this work before it is too late and Jesus returns to judge the world.

Introduction and Greetings

00:00:02
Speaker
Hello, everybody. May God's grace and shalom be covering over you today. I hope that you are having a fantastic day here on the Daily Reading for December 11th.
00:00:17
Speaker
Thank you so much for joining me as we continue on in the Day by Day Kids Bible, which has been written by Karen Henley. This is a very late posting, so once again I'm very sorry.

Connectivity Issues and Apologies

00:00:30
Speaker
i have been going crazy getting stuff done. I've been having difficulty, as you may know, with my internet cutting in and out. And it's time to say a fond farewell to my router.
00:00:41
Speaker
So I was off to the cable store today to pick up a combination modem and router instead of doing my recording this morning before work. And so after work and some other things later, here I am getting around to getting this recording done.

Preparation for Bible Reading

00:00:58
Speaker
So thank you as always for having grace and patience with me and getting these out as I work these into my regular life day too. Speaking of life and days, it's time to get out that calendar. It's time to get out our sticker or whatever we are using to mark off our days, or shall I say cross off our days, because we're going to hear the Bible today.
00:01:24
Speaker
Finally. but but Well, I hope that you are hungry today.

God's Perception of Time vs. Humans

00:01:31
Speaker
Today we are going to be reading about God's graciousness and his patience and his a View of time.
00:01:40
Speaker
God does not have the same view of time as we do because we are what we call finite. We have only a certain amount of time in which we live here on earth to do the work that God has given us to do.
00:01:56
Speaker
God, on the other hand, he has all the time in the world. Literally. So time is not measured by him the same way that we would think about measuring it.
00:02:09
Speaker
So while it seem may seem that God is taking a very long time to answer our prayers or to make something happen for us that we would like to see happen right away to return,
00:02:23
Speaker
to return God's timing is not like our timing. So while he may seem like it it may seem like he is taking a long time to return, it is not a long time the way he thinks about time.
00:02:40
Speaker
And Peter is going to be going over that with us today. So let's head up our Bibles here as we continue in the book of 2 Peter.

Lessons from 2 Peter

00:02:52
Speaker
And we're actually going to be finishing that today with chapter 3 and then beginning the first chapter of the book of Hebrews, which we will talk about when we get there.
00:03:05
Speaker
So let's look at chapter 3 of 2 Peter. We left off yesterday where Peter was telling us that when we return to the same sinful behavior, it's just like a dog who has gone back to the place where they threw up.
00:03:23
Speaker
Or a pig that was washed and went right back to the mud as soon as she got away from the bath.
00:03:31
Speaker
Peter says, you are my dear friends. And this is the second letter that I am writing to you. Both of my letters are to help you remember. And they should help you think about good things.
00:03:46
Speaker
Remember what God's prophet said long ago. Remember what your apostles have taught you about Jesus. And first, understand this.
00:04:00
Speaker
In the last days, people will make fun of others, and they will sin any way they want, They will say, if Jesus promised to come, then where is he?
00:04:14
Speaker
Every day goes by just the same and he hasn't come back yet. But they have forgotten something. Long ago, God made the sky with his words and he made the earth out of water.
00:04:30
Speaker
He also got rid of the world with water in Noah's time. The earth and sky will hear God's words again. And this time, God's words will bring fire.
00:04:45
Speaker
And the fire will come when God judges the world. He will get rid of people who do not follow him.
00:04:55
Speaker
Do not forget one thing. To God, a day is like a thousand years. And a thousand years are like a day. God is not slow about keeping his promise.
00:05:09
Speaker
And he is not slow the way people think of being slow. He is waiting for you. He doesn't want anybody to die and never live again.
00:05:21
Speaker
He wants everybody to be sorry and turn away from their sins. And he wants everybody to come into his kingdom.
00:05:33
Speaker
And the day that Jesus comes back will be like when a robber comes. A robber surprises you. You don't know when he's going to rob your house. Someday there will be a roar and the sky will suddenly be gone.
00:05:52
Speaker
and Everything in it will burn up. The earth and everything in it will be uncovered. Everything is going to be torn down.
00:06:05
Speaker
So what kind of people should you be? You should be good and clean and sinless. And you should look for that day of God.
00:06:18
Speaker
Help it to come soon. The sky will burn up with fire that is very hot and everything will melt. But God keeps his promise.
00:06:32
Speaker
So we look for a new sky and space. We look for a new earth. And it will be the home of people who are right with God.

Insights into Hebrews

00:06:46
Speaker
You are watching for this. So try to have clean, spotless hearts. And try to be at peace with God. Remember that God is waiting.
00:06:58
Speaker
so that people will be saved.
00:07:02
Speaker
Paul wrote to you about this as well. God made him wise to know about these things. He writes all his letters the same way, and he talks about this. Sometimes Paul's letters are hard to understand, and some people change the meaning of his letters.
00:07:21
Speaker
And they have also changed the meaning of other things that God has said too. But in the end, They will get hurt for doing it. Watch out and make sure that you do not get pulled into sin.
00:07:37
Speaker
Be sure that you are in God's kingdom. Grow in Jesus's kind love. Grow to know Jesus better and let him be seen for who he is.
00:07:55
Speaker
He is great now and forever. Yes. Amen. From Peter.
00:08:08
Speaker
We're going to also now beginning the book of Hebrews. chapter 1. And the book of Hebrews, nobody is exactly certain who wrote the book of Hebrews. The author is not explicitly stated as the letters are from Paul and Peter.
00:08:26
Speaker
So we don't actually know who wrote it. It could have been Paul or it could have been Luke. It could have been Barnabas or Apollos. we What we do know is that it was written in Italy and it was written around 70 after death of Jesus, the year 70.
00:08:47
Speaker
And we know that it was written before the temple was destroyed in Jerusalem. And we do also know that it was sent to Jesus's Jewish followers.
00:09:00
Speaker
People who were Jewish and believed in Jesus as their Messiah were having difficulties because of the persecution from other Jewish people who did not believe in Jesus as the Messiah.
00:09:15
Speaker
So this letter is written to them as they struggle in their faith of belief in the Messiah. And they have, some of them were turning back to Judaism without having, with with the by rescinding their faith in Jesus.
00:09:37
Speaker
So by changing and deciding that they actually didn't believe in Jesus as their Messiah, they were reverting to their prior Jewish faith, which did not include the Messiah yet.
00:09:51
Speaker
And this was of a great concern to whoever the author of this book, Hebrews, was. And so this letter was written with the intent to explain why they needed to continue with their faith and why Jesus truly is the Messiah that they had been long waiting for.
00:10:16
Speaker
So this author is going to be discussing things like how Jesus fulfilled the prophecies and what it means for them as Jewish believers.
00:10:27
Speaker
For instance, the day of atonement, God gave the Jewish people the gift of atonement once a year where they would sacrifice and they would do this at the temple and they would um cast their sins on also what is called a what was called a scapegoat.
00:10:50
Speaker
And the goat would take the sins out of the camp, out of the city. And so these were things that were no longer needed per per se. We observe them in remembrance and we remember that we had the day of atonement, but the Gentiles, they never had atonement for their sins.
00:11:13
Speaker
And now they did. So this was specifically written to the Jewish believers to help them understand what they have now and how it is fulfilling.
00:11:25
Speaker
God's prophecies and his promises as to what he would do.
00:11:35
Speaker
We will eventually also get to a the part in Hebrews, I think it's supposed to be somewhere around, I think it's chapter 10 or so, where we we remember that when Jesus died,
00:11:50
Speaker
He also allowed the Jewish people and all people to now have direct access to God. And this was not something that was um accessible to the people before. God's presence was kept separate inside the the temple behind the curtain of the most holy of holies place, the holy of holies.
00:12:16
Speaker
And that was where only once a year the priest could enter into that area where they would make atonement for first himself and then for the people.
00:12:28
Speaker
But God's presence was not to be contaminated or to have anything to do with sin in the presence. And so now, because Jesus has cleaned us and we are now seen as sinless and spotless,
00:12:46
Speaker
Before God, we are clean. Now we have direct access to God. And we as Gentiles have had this from the beginning of our faith.
00:12:57
Speaker
But the Jewish people did not have this. And when Jesus died, that veil was torn in them from the most holy place from top to bottom.
00:13:08
Speaker
Not from side to side, but from top to bottom. So that God's presence was now accessible to all the people. So this is the intent and the purpose of the book of Hebrews.
00:13:23
Speaker
So now that we understand our audience, we will understand the context of what we are reading.
00:13:31
Speaker
The letter begins, A long time ago, God talked to our people through the prophets, and he talked in different ways. Now, God has talked to us through Jesus.
00:13:47
Speaker
God chose Jesus, and God promised that everything would belong to Jesus. And in fact, God made everything with Jesus.
00:14:02
Speaker
God's Son, Jesus, shines brightly with God's greatness. And Jesus shows us just what God is like.
00:14:14
Speaker
And Jesus keeps everything going. with his powerful word. Jesus made a way for hearts to be clean from sin.
00:14:25
Speaker
And then he sat down beside the king of heaven. So he is greater than the angels. And even his name is greater than theirs.
00:14:38
Speaker
Did God ever say this to an angel? And the author quotes from the Old Covenant. It says, you are my son.
00:14:50
Speaker
Today, I became your father.
00:14:55
Speaker
God brought his son into the world and he said, all you angels worship him.
00:15:05
Speaker
And here's what God says about the angels. He makes his angels to be like wind. He makes his servants to be like fire.
00:15:18
Speaker
But here is what God says about his son. You will be king forever and ever. You will do what is right when you rule your kingdom.
00:15:31
Speaker
You love what is right and you hate what is wrong. So your God gave you a place greater than others, and he let joy flow over you.
00:15:46
Speaker
God says this to his son. Lord, in the beginning you made the earth. Your hands made the sky and all of space.
00:15:59
Speaker
They will not last forever, but you will. They will wear out like clothes. and you will roll them up as if they were a robe.
00:16:11
Speaker
They will be changed like you change clothes, but you stay the same. Your life never ends.
00:16:24
Speaker
And did God ever say this to any angel? Sit at my right side, and I will make your enemies like a footstool, so you can rest your feet on them.
00:16:38
Speaker
The angels are spirits that God sends, and he sends them to serve his people.
00:16:47
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.

Faithfulness of God in History

00:16:52
Speaker
It's kind of an abrupt ending there. I was expecting there to be more. i All day today when I was reading that again, i kept thinking there was going to be more and I would turn the page and that was it. It was the end of chapter one of Hebrews.
00:17:07
Speaker
So it's very important for us to know that part of God's plan was to have us saved by Jesus. This was God's word.
00:17:17
Speaker
He promised it and he did it. In the same way, God promised that he will, that Jesus will come again.
00:17:29
Speaker
And so it may seem like God is not going to do that because he's just taking for forever. We're already 2,000 years past the time that Jesus was here.
00:17:41
Speaker
And yet despite that, we are assured that God will make good on his promise. No man knows the day. No man knows the hour that this will occur.
00:17:54
Speaker
And Jesus tells us that not even he knows it. not the angels. The only one who knows this perfect time is God. But we have faith in God and we can see God's faithfulness all throughout the Bible as we have read it.
00:18:15
Speaker
So whether we are Jewish and have come to know Jesus as our Messiah, or whether we are Gentile and claim to be Christian, we all have knowledge of the old covenant so we can see from all of the past events that God is faithful.
00:18:39
Speaker
He never lies. He has kept every single promise that he has ever made and the ones that have not yet come to fruition He will still make happen in their correct and proper, right, perfect timing.
00:19:00
Speaker
But God's ways are different than our ways. They are higher than our ways. And whatever time God brings it about, it will be the right time.
00:19:13
Speaker
So we can pray for that time, but we have not missed it. And we can have faith and know that God is patient.
00:19:25
Speaker
Peter tells us that God is patiently waiting for the right time in order to allow everybody to have the opportunity to be saved because God does not want anybody to die and then not be able to return to life eternally with him.
00:19:46
Speaker
So that should be our prayer, is that before God's time of judgment comes, that those we know and love, and even those we do not know and love, will come to a saving grace, a saving knowledge in Jesus as their Messiah, to save them from their sins as well.
00:20:09
Speaker
And this is not, I'm not even sure that this is a time that we should really be hoping necessarily for. We can get excited. Oh, Jesus is coming back. But this is going to be a time of horror for those who are judged.
00:20:26
Speaker
We will read about the different things that will occur in Revelation. And it is not going to be a fun time. Even those who are believers,
00:20:39
Speaker
um at some point before he returns, God says he will cut the days short for the sake of the elect because it will be a harsh time.
00:20:52
Speaker
Jesus, before he comes, Peter tells us today that people will sin any way they want to, that they will make fun of others.
00:21:05
Speaker
And we know that it's not a time that will be leading up to greater love. Because Jesus told us that in the last days, the love of most will grow cold.

Prayer and Evangelism before Judgment

00:21:20
Speaker
So the world is not going to be a very fun place to be in. It's going to get more and more evil. not more and more good.
00:21:32
Speaker
So we need to be praying that those who are doing evil would come to a saving knowledge of Jesus. That should be something that we are praying for actively because it's not going to be very fun for them when they get judged for their behavior.
00:21:54
Speaker
And God's patience with us as he waits for those people to be saved is all grace.
00:22:02
Speaker
we We know that even when God was ah giving warning to the Jewish people prior to their exile, there were many, many, many, most people were not believing the prophecies or the prophets that God was going to exile his own people.
00:22:23
Speaker
There were false prophets and people claiming that this was not going to happen. The people were doing fine. This wasn't something they needed to be concerned about. Everything was great. This wasn't going to happen.
00:22:39
Speaker
and God sent the prophets over and over, Jeremiah and others, to warn the people that this was going to happen. And despite their disbelief,
00:22:53
Speaker
It did happen. And when it did finally happen, it was not swift. It wasn't quick. It wasn't painless. Famine came.
00:23:05
Speaker
People were so hungry that they even ate their own children. There was violence. There was horror. They were scared. It was not a fun time to be part of judgment.
00:23:19
Speaker
It's not something that I would want to wish on people. So this is a scary time when Jesus finally does return because it's going to mean that the world is in a state of judgment.
00:23:33
Speaker
And so we need to do our part to do the good works that God has given us to do so that we can help lead people to his name.
00:23:45
Speaker
to be there for them to believe that he is their savior. His is the only name who saves under heaven. And it is not going to be good for them.
00:23:58
Speaker
So I hope that you are encouraged to listening Going in your good works to tell people about Jesus to be patient as we wait for this day to come. I know Peter was Encouraging us to help it to get here. We know that there are many things that Peter was not ah There at the time during the revelation that was given to um John so we have a little bit more information about this great time of judgment than Peter did. Whereas at the time they were looking at it as just a wonderful time that he was going to come back and reign forever.
00:24:41
Speaker
And Jesus will come back and reign forever. That part will be good. But before he reigns and sits down here on earth for that thousand years of peace, there will be a great deal judgment.
00:24:57
Speaker
and trouble that will come upon the earth before he sits down. And so had he been aware of that, I don't think he would have probably been quite so eager to encourage us to um want that day to come so quickly, because now we know that it is a time of great judgment.
00:25:19
Speaker
And we do have the rapture, which we know will occur, which also they were looking forward to. So we also can eagerly look to that, knowing that we will rise with Jesus when he when he returns.
00:25:33
Speaker
But for the people who are here, it will not be a fun time. So we want to be sure that we help as many people to be saved as possible.
00:25:45
Speaker
Well, thank you for joining me to- today. i hope that you are encouraged to use your spiritual gift to help build God's family, his spiritual family, so that we can save as many people as possible before Jesus returns and the great judgment begins.
00:26:05
Speaker
And that will be our prayer today, too, that we would be filled with a sense of urgency, knowing that since we do not know when this time will come, that we need to be sure that we are doing our best to try and get as many people to come to that saving truth and knowledge of Jesus as much as possible.
00:26:32
Speaker
Well, I hope that you are having a fantastic day, whatever day you are getting around to watching or listening to today's December 11th daily reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible. And I hope that you will be hungry again to- tomorrow for to tomorrow's daily reading. And will continue to be strong with me as we complete the year, having read the entire day-by-day kids Bible version in our in this year.
00:27:00
Speaker
I hope you stick with it and finish out the year with me. After we finish all of the different letters, we will eventually get to the book of Revelation. And that will start on December 20th. And today is the 11th. So we only have nine more days to go until we get to Revelation.
00:27:19
Speaker
And then once we finish Revelation, it will be the end of the year. So you can do it. Stand firm in in ah in your commitment to finish this out. Stay strong. I know you can do it. Even if you're new and you haven't been listening for a while, you can do it. Stick with us for the end of the year.
00:27:37
Speaker
Until we reach the end of the year. And if you have not been listening from the very beginning, feel free to start back at the beginning in January.

Future Plans and Spiritual Growth

00:27:46
Speaker
This event will still be posted wherever you ah are taking the time to watch or listen.
00:27:52
Speaker
And for instance, on YouTube, it will be listed under the playlist of Read the Bible in One Year. ah God is starting to make next year's plans come a little more into focus for me. So i think what we will be doing next year is God is going to give me topics and and I will speak about different things um in in growing in our faith.
00:28:18
Speaker
This year has been a fantastic year for building our faith. And we're going to be focusing on daily applications, and not daily applications, but on application on how to grow.
00:28:32
Speaker
And i will be sharing different examples as to how God is using whatever message he wants to wants me to share to encourage and and to teach how to grow in him.
00:28:47
Speaker
ah by learning from our mistakes or learning from my mistakes in that instance. ah Also, am i am a and i am an appreciative coach and my goal is to help people make lasting lifestyle changes.
00:29:07
Speaker
And it is my passion to help people make lasting spiritual lifestyle changes. So that's part of what I have incorporated into this this year's daily applications is helping us to make lasting lifestyle changes ah by understanding in the Bible why we need to do the right things so that we can make that choice and rather than feeling it is an obligation or a burden.
00:29:38
Speaker
So that will be part of my goal next year as well is having as
00:29:48
Speaker
I don't know what to call it, podcasts or readings, not readings per se, but having discussions about how to have lasting lifestyle changes.
00:29:58
Speaker
And again, I'll be using examples out of my own life to do that as well. So I want to encourage you after you finish this year's reading to join me, to continue to join me next year as we embark on a new adventure.

Conclusion and Encouragement

00:30:15
Speaker
So thank you for being with me here today. And I want to pray for you that you continue to grow in helping other people know about ah God's word and his saving grace, that you continue to witness to people, that you will see the opportunities that God gives you every day to talk with people about his amazing love for us and how it has changed your life.
00:30:46
Speaker
And until we meet again, i hope that you have a fantastic rest of your day. See you next time.
