The Allure of New Star Wars Shows
00:00:00
Speaker
This show skeleton crew had so much going for it in the sense that it's completely new There's new characters new stories new antagonists that were following today for some reason I was beginning to wonder what made this show stand out to me compared to a lot of the other Star Wars shows that we've had True cuz it's different. Yeah, it's it's very different And then I saw a tweet that kind of made me come to a conclusion here. okay So the tweet I saw was
00:00:34
Speaker
Welcome back to This Is The Way Seekers, a podcast for Star Wars fans by Star Wars fans. My name is Austin SWE. I'm here with my first mate once again, Scotty Holiday, to be talking skeleton crew. Aye aye. Aye aye. Oh, love all the pirate vibes of skeleton crew. But Scotty, we are three episodes in to the show now. Last week we talked about how much we loved the first two episodes. Do you still feel the same way for episode three?
00:01:03
Speaker
Uh, let's just say this. I almost started crying at one point. Really? Really? In a good I can't even. begin to even wonder where you could have cried at, but, you know, we'll talk about it. We'll talk about it. I'm in the same boat. I mean, I wasn't about to cry at anything that I remember, but I still love the show. I still think it's doing amazing things. And I actually wanted to talk a little bit about that because, you know, last week, as I said, I loved it. I really needed to love it because I wasn't in in a great place with the Star Wars fandom.
Importance of Strong Storytelling in Star Wars
00:01:41
Speaker
Yeah. And the franchise. And so it's nice to have a project that I love. But today, for some reason, I was beginning to wonder what made this show stand out to me compared to a lot of the other Star Wars shows that we've had, which true because it's different. Yeah, it's it's very different. um And then I saw a tweet that kind of made me come to a conclusion here.
00:02:03
Speaker
Okay. So the tweet I saw was that four years ago today, as of recording December 10th, it was announced that Hayden Christensen would be returning as Darth Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi.
00:02:15
Speaker
woo Right. Well, you say woo, but then, you know, we saw the series and okay. True. And it's actually been four years since that entire Disney plus investors day where they announced a boatload of projects and less than half. Actually, don't at least don't put the graphic on the screen. It's going to give people, it's going to bring back. Yeah, exactly.
00:02:37
Speaker
um But then I realized, you know, and in seeing all the announcements that came out four years ago, specifically the Hayden Christensen one, this show Skeleton Crew had so much going for it in the sense that it's completely new. There's new characters, new stories, new antagonists that we're following instead of, you know, the typical rebel versus empire. For sure.
00:03:00
Speaker
We have lots of new coming here and it's not so much the fact that we're getting new stories and Star Wars should never retread the same waters, go back to old characters. That's not what I'm saying at all. But I realized that in order for Skeleton crew to get green lit, they had to have a story first. They had to have what was going to happen with these characters decided first because they couldn't just come in and say,
00:03:24
Speaker
I have this great idea for a series about some curly headed kid and his blue elephant friend. And it's going to sell so many tickets. You know, they couldn't just do that. Whereas with like Obi-Wan Kenobi, it's like, OK, we don't have a story, but we know we want to tell a story about Obi-Wan Kenobi. They had the show decided before there was ever a story. Yeah. And Skeleton Crew is not that.
00:03:50
Speaker
um And the only other time where they decided they were making a show about a character before they had a story first where it actually worked out was Andor. So true. You know, I think we're starting to see a pattern here that Star Wars maybe should plan plan you know have a story first before focusing on spectacle like the rematch of the century or you know Boba Fett is back you know things like that it's yeah you know let's have a story first I mean, we all know that I am not like the biggest sequel fan. And I've always said that that was a part of the issue with the sequel trilogy and why I didn't connect with it as much because I was like, it just kind of felt like things were happening on the fly. And especially as we got through it. Yeah, I agree. I mean, with Kenobi, the whole rematch of the century thing, that was like a trigger when you said that. but This will be the rematch of the century.
00:04:47
Speaker
When did that happen? didn't When did we see the rematch of the century? Because, um, no, right I don't remember that happening. And I mean, yeah, I think with Mando too, it was kind of a new situation.
Nostalgia vs. Fresh Storytelling in Star Wars
00:05:00
Speaker
They were still familiar, but it was just like, they had an idea of the story that they wanted to tell going into it. And obviously it's kind of morphed and evolved since then, but.
00:05:10
Speaker
Yeah, I think Star Wars needs to be planned um yeah and it can't just rely on nostalgia and flashy like, you know, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you loved him before. Here he is again. It's Ewan McGregor. And we're going to figure it out as we go.
00:05:23
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. and And like I said, the projects that people seem to be connecting to the most, Skeleton Crew, Mando Season One, are the ones that are bringing new to the table. That doesn't mean you can't show things from the Star Wars franchise and have it speak Star Wars, but I think people are wanting good stories rather than, oh my God, Darth Vader is back.
00:05:45
Speaker
You know, like, yeah, I think something to point out, too, because we didn't really mention the acolyte and it's still fresh in people's minds. Yeah. If the writing was a bit better, I think it would have had this kind of same reaction towards new and fresh because the story that they were trying to tell was new and fresh. It was just at least in my opinion, some of the writing is what made it kind of fall flat in some spots. So yeah, maybe I'm playing devil's advocate there, but yeah, no, I absolutely agree with you. The acolyte would have, you know,
00:06:14
Speaker
I think Acolyte would have had the same reaction if it weren't for some of the writing. And then, of course, we all know Acolyte had a lot going up, you know, going against it. I was ignoring that part because it was bullshit. That was not valid criticism. so Yeah, exactly. So yeah, the valid criticism part, you know, that's what we should focus on for sure.
00:06:33
Speaker
And then think of like, you brought up Mando, think of when Mando started to fall apart. It was season two when they started trying to bring it into the larger Star Wars universe. Trying to do too much. Right. And I really don't like that that's kind of how the vibe of the Mandalorian became, because it seems like they're like, well, how can we keep pushing the Mandalorian into everything else Star Wars? You know, I think Book of Boba Fett is a really good example of like,
00:07:01
Speaker
what I mean with having a character first before a story because the spectacle came first with that show. It's like, well, let's have Boba Fett back. Oh, let's have a little bit of a redemption arc for Boba Fett. And then, like, that's all they had. that You know, there wasn't enough in their idea to actually execute it and have a good story for the Book of Boba Fett, which should have been a top three Star Wars project of all time, in my opinion. I mean, yeah, I agree that had The fanboys should have loved that show. Mm hmm. Like, but that was not the case. um And it's interesting because I know a thing a lot of us are talking about, too, is how a skeleton crew going to connect to all of this. Right. Because we have no idea. And so far it hasn't. I even thought in this episode, we'd finally get like a little connection with the New Republic. But I don't know who that man was in the X-Wing.
00:07:52
Speaker
Yeah. That was not Carcenteva, so... Exactly. I was waiting for it too. Same. Here comes Carcenteva, or Debra Chow, or fucking Dave Vellodi. But no, it it wasn't. um Yeah. And that's why I think we should emphasize, too. You know, we're only three episodes into Skeleton Crew. There is five episodes for this show to completely fall flat on its face. You know, hopefully it doesn't.
Episode Three's Unique Storytelling Approach
00:08:20
Speaker
Hopefully it doesn't. i'm I think we're both rooting for this show to succeed for sure. and But you're you're completely right. There's time. And I was even nervous earlier today. I was like, I love the premiere. It was so much fun. Please let this next episode be good. Don't like just go completely downhill from here.
00:08:38
Speaker
yeah Which I guess that's just like the anxiety mind of me. But I was like, I'm just going to take it as it is. right And it was good. You have to, you have to. And I thought it was great too. I really loved episode three, to be honest. And the quality of this episode really supports what I was saying earlier about, We need new stories. I realized that when they were escaping and it's like, you know, we're going up against antagonists that we don't typically get to see in Star Wars, because like I said, it's very much Rebels Empire or, you know, the knockoffs of that, you know. Yeah, exactly. Jedi Sith. It's always the same kind of conflict going on. um So when we see these kids escaping and they're escaping their pirates and things like that, I'm like, you know, I really, I really think I'm on to something here. I think Skeleton Crew
00:09:29
Speaker
ah benefits from having a story first, which when you say it out loud, it's like, duh, that's common fucking sense. But I guess not for Lucasfilm. So if they're listening, which I don't know why they'd be listening to us, but they totally are. Of course. they know what Yeah.
00:09:46
Speaker
Oh, well, I didn't seem to get my gift box in the mail of skeleton crows. You didn't see me put out a video about it either. So mr go they watch us, but then they put us on a list of like, we do not go anywhere near the waste. We're on the list of, oh, they just started again. They're in like a trial period. So they're not marketable.
00:10:09
Speaker
Well, Scotty, we've ah gone off the rails here at the start, but that's what I wanted, because like I said, we always have honest conversations on this as the system of waste seekers. But what are we talking about today?
00:10:20
Speaker
Um, well, if you haven't figured it out already, episode three of skeleton crew, very interesting as an astrogation problem, which astrogation, I was like, what the hell is this episode going to be about? I was like, it better not be math. Right. don't be math Okay. Is this a safe space?
00:10:40
Speaker
Because I don't know what astrogation means. I saw the episode title after I watched and I was like, what? Where the fuck does that come from? This is a safe space. um And to me, I thought of Astro Glide. And I'll leave it at that. OK.
00:10:56
Speaker
I thought of like maybe some digestion issues. I was like, oh, Scotty's going to love this episode. I'm going to really relate to this episode. It's going to hit home. That's why I was crying. There we go. Yes. Scotty was really holding space for astrogation.
Parents' Reactions and Planetary Secrets
00:11:11
Speaker
Yes. But the episode starts off with something that I thought was cool, getting to see all of the parents. um Yeah. They're freaking out because, duh, their kids have disappeared and they don't know where, except for Wim's dad. He kind of has an idea. Yeah. um Do you think that the parents' reactions were like... a little less than you expected for me at least in the first two episodes i thought the parents knew more than they were leading on but this episode made it seem like they were actually more in the dark than i thought they were with the whole supervisor and the security droids and especially as we learned that they were like yeah we're not going to do anything because they're out of out of the planet we can't risk it and so i did think the parents were going to be a little more like
00:12:01
Speaker
I guess over the top about it, but in reality, I think they're just as much in the dark as yeah the kids were on the planet, which was a really weird flip that I didn't expect, but kind of made it everything surrounding AT-ATN and its secrecy a lot more intriguing. Yeah. I don't know. I kind of, I can see where you're coming from, but I always figured that they were just in the dark. Like they didn't know either. I kind of figured nobody on AT-ATN really knows, but I think there is someone who does know, which is Wim's dad. Because while I do say that the reaction wasn't as much as I expected, besides KB's parents, KB's parents were kind of like, what the fuck's going on? I was like, why is nobody else here? Right. KB's parents too. She has a family. Yes, she does. She's not just living on her own.
00:12:51
Speaker
um but yeah they were the only ones that were like over the top i remember um neil's mom was kind of like oh you must have be so you must be so distressed so tired and i'm like are you not like you're the mother of neil And he's on that ship too. I think it was the fact that they didn't think their kids could get out of the barrier and out of the planet. It might have been a little bit of denial. yeah well There's no way our our kids, our little 10 year old kids could have gotten off of this planet. Like they've got to be somewhere.
00:13:26
Speaker
And that's what Fern's mom is stressing. She's like, exactly they're going to find them like, I did things as a kid where I went off on little adventures and the security droids found me and everything was good. like Exactly. or I'm sorry. I think it was KB, one of her moms. but No, it was it was Fern's mom that was like, you know, we used to run away all the time as kids and they'd bring us back. It was a Fern's mom.
00:13:48
Speaker
um but as I was saying I do think Wim's dad knows more because they have that shot at the end of the scene where they like focusing in on him and while everyone else is like oh my god we need to talk to the senator we need to you know get I don't care about the barrier rules he kind of seems like he's sitting down and accepting his fate here as if in his mind he understands that not breaking contact and you know keeping the barrier intact is more important than getting his kid back.
00:14:21
Speaker
And so, like obviously that's not the case. Obviously getting his kid back is more important. But like I said last week, I think that whatever his job is has to do with the great work and keeping the barrier in check. Like he knows, he knows that, oh yeah, there is no breaking the barrier here because it's much more dangerous than whatever our kids are doing. We have to, it's a sacrifice to keep up with the great work. That's almost the vibe I got from Wim's dad in that scene.
00:14:50
Speaker
I could see that. And then I also wonder, and this is just me like trying to dig deeper. I'm like, could it also be trauma because he lost his spouse? That's true. Which is why it might seem a little more understated as well because he's just like going into those emotions again, being like, I could have literally lost my kid forever. Yeah.
00:15:10
Speaker
I do I do think he knows more than he's leading on and I felt like he's been very understated so far in this series in general so it'll be interesting to see if any lost spouse trauma plays into it or if it's just like you said he just knows more than he's leading on right right exactly and like we said last week his mom could be missing because she also left to the barrier or had questions or things like that.
Port Borgo: Design and Realism
00:15:37
Speaker
And so, yeah, I think you might be on to something there. It might be just something a little traumatic. But either way, I think he knows something. And I think that shot at the end really emphasizes that he knows something more than he these parents do. um And I just I don't know. I don't know why I don't trust him.
00:15:58
Speaker
I don't know either, but maybe like you said, it's because he's so understated, but I found him to be that way this entire series. And I'm like, is that an acting choice or is he just not super expressive in his yeah like character? We'll have to wait and see as the series goes out. We've only seen a handful of scenes with him. Right. Exactly. That's why I was my face when you said this entire series, I was like, oh, all three of his scenes. All of his all three of his scenes. Yeah. Right. Slay.
00:16:28
Speaker
Well, Port Borgo, we're back to Port Borgo and the kids get out and escape. I was, you know, like I said, intrigued by it. That's when I kind of realized like, oh, I'm intrigued by a Star Wars story. That's not just, oh, how are we going to get to this character next? You know, how are we going to get to Luke Skywalker? I'm actually intrigued with how they're going to escape. But then I do have a little bit of a criticism here. Mm hmm.
00:16:54
Speaker
Why the fuck were those kids able to escape so easily? They just walked out. I mean, it's the debauchery of Port Borgo itself. It's just everybody's nobody's really paying attention to anybody else unless you walk in with like flashing credits or flashing like wealth. I don't really think anybody pays attention. And I think that's the point, which is kind of like everybody ties it into like Tortuga from Pirates of the Caribbean is it's just like everybody's kind of there laying low. There's so many people there that could also be trying to lay low and hide. So people aren't really looking up unless, you know, you give them a reason to.
00:17:32
Speaker
That's why when Wim threw the credits on the counter, everybody perked up because they were like, Oh, right what are these wealth and credits? I mean, they're just a bunch of drunk people and just a bunch of people trying to hide and get lost.
00:17:45
Speaker
Yeah, I guess that makes sense and it also depends how much time has actually passed. It's just kind of crazy to go from like what seemed like the entire Port Borgo was like focusing in on that big giant scene that they caused before they were thrown into jail to go from that to the same very recognizable blue elephant was able to just walk out in front of people and nobody was like, hey, that's that kid that caused in a huge explosion, you know, the day prior. I think that's just a nitpick. It might be, but I don't know. I didn't feel very realistic. It didn't feel very realistic that they were able to just escape. So I don't know. Maybe it is a nitpick, but but this is my podcast.
00:18:31
Speaker
i will I will say that Port Borgo in general, I continued to love it as just a place. It still looked so good, especially in the scenes where they were in the ship once they got into the ship and all like. Parkships were around like everything looked so good and I was waiting for like the special effects to slip up a little bit or to be like, yeah you know, that didn't look very great. But I didn't notice any of that in this episode in general, but specifically on Port Borgo, just leaving the port, even like some of the shots when he first went back there and there's like just the wide shot on the port itself. I was like, OK, let me see if I can find anything in here that I'm like, oh, that looks kind of crappy. But it just continued to look really good.
00:19:14
Speaker
Yeah, exactly. Exactly. I love that place. I do love that place. It looks gorgeous. And also I should keep my mouth shut with having nitpicks because we both had a nitpick last week that was answered within this episode, which was OK, why didn't Jod escape?
Skeleton Crew's Unexpected Quality
00:19:35
Speaker
If he could have all this time, why didn't he? And KB asks him that exact same question. And he's like, what's the point of escaping with no ship? And then it's like when that happened, I was like, oh, duh, obviously. There was there was actually a lot of that in this episode. I feel like they answered all the questions about, oh, is he just tricking, not really using the force that they even said mirrors, strings, yeah like magnets and
00:19:59
Speaker
like i I felt like it was very self-aware of them to put that in there and it it felt kind of cheeky and I liked it a lot because it's like for these little nitpick things that we might have they're like well why wouldn't the characters that are experiencing this think the same thing right also have those questions exactly instead of just ignoring it, which I feel like goes into the writing, which we've already said is one of the things that's excelled with this project or not excelled, but like it's held up really good so far compared to other projects where, you know, the characters seem oblivious to the things going on around them. And it's like, why wouldn't they question that?
00:20:36
Speaker
And that's what I really liked about this episode. yeah i think I think this show is very aware of like what viewers are thinking. I mean, think about it. We see that this show is starring Star Wars fans, you know fans of the the stories that they've heard, um they're very limited stories they've heard on AT-AT. So I think it does make sense that they're so in tune with what audiences want, which is funny, because if you asked any Star Wars fan before Skeleton Crew came out, if that's what they wanted, they'd be like, hell no. That's not what I want at all. like Not that kid show. Exactly. But as most creatives will tell you, you don't know what you want. I know what you want. And you're not going to know you want it until you have it.
00:21:20
Speaker
And I think Skeleton Crew is doing a great job at that. I completely agree because just like I said about Andor, like I was like, why do we need to show about Andor? And now it's like my favorite live action. But I'm like Skeleton Crew is climbing up the list very quickly. Very quickly. So I'm excited to talk more about how it compares to Andor, but I think we'll do that in later episodes once we know more so that we don't look stupid come episode five when it just becomes Ahsoka season two or something like that. No, no, no. don't We're not manifesting
Character Speculations: Jod and SM33
00:21:57
Speaker
Also, I have to apologize because you were correct. SM33 is not dead and the kids went after him. I had thought that it was just, all right, you know, we just got to leave him behind. There's nothing we can do, but... No, he's so cool. How could... I mean, if we want to if we really want to take it back, who's going to sell toys? Neil and probably SM 33. So like who would have won? Who doesn't want an SM 33? Like and I didn't even notice until like after I think it was this weekend. SM 33 has a peg leg. Did you know that? Yeah. Yeah, I noticed it because it I didn't even notice. Oh, it's funny.
00:22:36
Speaker
Yeah, I like his design because it's it's very like skull like skeleton like skeleton crew. And I know I didn't like it that much at first to be completely honest. Oh, really? But it's I was just like, yeah he looks kind of weird. His voice feels a little too human and not droid enough. But um something that I really loved in this episode is I feel like at least I kind of honed in on watching the way he moves about and stuff. And I think the fact that they have somebody puppeting him like in the show really works for the design that he is because he's supposed to be like this old kind of like very, very old droid that's like barely hanging on. He's seen a lot of like R2D2 and C3PO have seen a lot. But like clearly SM33 has seen a lot more yeah and and can like do combat on top of that. So like that's going to wear you down a bit.
00:23:28
Speaker
But I'm really I'm really liking him. And I'm glad that they didn't just leave him, especially after John was like, it's just a droid, only the droid. And they're like, he's the only one that knows how to do this ship. So true. And then Fern says about a jet, I would never leave anyone behind.
00:23:46
Speaker
You know, and obviously we know that Jod isn't a Jedi as revealed in the end of the episode. Well, kind of revealed. But you know, it's so funny about that. Hmm. I feel like it harkened back to Finn in The Force Awakens, where he's like the resistance. I am with the resistance with the resistance. Yeah. I am with the resistance. So it felt very that the way Jod was like, that's not.
00:24:12
Speaker
Oh, I guess you're right. Yeah. You know what? I will go save him. Y'all stay here out of danger. I will sacrifice myself for the droid. Right. I think that there was another callback. Mine might be a little more tinfoil hat than yours.
00:24:30
Speaker
um but fern mentioning you you know jedi never leave anyone behind i was like is this tying into the fact that the jedi she knows are like a watered down version because she's only hearing about the jedi from tales that are probably thousands of years old because they're from the time of the old republic because she says I thought a Jedi would never leave anyone behind, but that's not really anything we ever hear about with the Jedi. In fact, if you remember in Attack of the Clones, when Padme falls off the ship and Anakin wants to go back and get her, Obi-Wan frames it as that as if it's like an un-Jedi-like thing to do, that you need to let her go
Jod's Mysterious Past and Jedi Connections
00:25:09
Speaker
and just, you know, there's no going back for her. And he actually gets in trouble for going back to her. So I was like, is that a little Attack of the Clones callback that you kind of got to
00:25:18
Speaker
dig a little deep and be like, oh, no, that's a good point. Right. Like maybe she doesn't understand the Jedi in the same way that someone who has heard the more updated stories would.
00:25:29
Speaker
Well, and I think that plays on to the glorification of just any kind of higher power or being or like a savior thing. And that's what they're hearing. Like you said, it's myths and fables and tales, literally tales of the Jedi. Right. From beyonds ago. And we even see that with both Neil and Wim, because they're so naive, especially Wim, who's just like, of course he can help us. He's a Jedi. Of course he can do that because he's clearly a Jedi.
00:25:58
Speaker
And it's very cute and i I get it because Wim's just fascinated This is his choose your own adventure and it's going completely in his favor so far. Yeah, so I love that I loved seeing just the naivety of it all and then of course KB and Fern being like No, I don't think so but we're gonna let you have fun with that but we're gonna keep an eye on this this job Nana would I Right. Yeah. They are not very trustworthy of Jod. And and just to be honest, I wouldn't be either. I'm still not trustworthy even after everything that we learned in this episode. i'm I'm just still kind of like bullshit. We're going to be betrayed by you at some point or we're going to learn more. One thing I was surprised about is when his old crewmate or whoever popped into the droid place, I really thought he was going to pull like a Han Solo and kill him. Right.
00:26:49
Speaker
Like with Greedo, like, I really thought it was going to be a, oh, no, like, yeah, hey, buddy, you know, you can't tell can't tell anybody that I'm here. Like, I just got to slip out. I finally found that big score and his crew members like, well, maybe I should call Brutus and see what's going on. And I really thought he was going to pull the blaster and kill him. But he, as far as we know, I don't think he did. I think he kind of just made a run for it.
00:27:14
Speaker
yeah yeah no he didn't kill him and another interesting part about that scene is that he calls him captain silvo it was confirmed right which i oh was was captain silvo the one from the beginning of episode one yeah oh okay so that is a confirmation right there see we didn't know last week when we recorded episode one and two that it was the same character, Jod and Captain Silvo. We realized after I texted Scotty the next morning and I was like, wait a second, they're the same person. And as I was watching it, I was like, that guy sounds just like Jude Law. Like why would they have this person that sounds just like him or have him voice this character? It didn't even click in my head that I was like, oh, maybe they're actually the same person. and That's why we're, opening with this prologue of like a pirate ah going on a ship trying to steal stuff. And it all makes sense. OK, yeah, that I actually didn't know that Captain Silvo was the name of the other captain. So or the character the captain that is Jude Law. um I didn't realize that because obviously we know that Kim also calls him another name. It was. Oh, God. What was it? Crimson Jack. Crimson Jack. Yep. Crimson Jack sounds like a wonderful alcohol.
00:28:31
Speaker
And, you know, maybe Corky Kreese.

So. Oh, my God. I had it. I saw you tweeted that and just had the scroll. I was like, I just had this thought and I was like, this is so ridiculous, but I'm a post it anyway. But I mean, even in interviews, Jude Law was like, I mean, his name is Jada Nawa. There's a couple of other names he goes by. We've gotten Captain Silvo now. We've gotten Crimson Jack. I'm like, are we going to get a different one each episode?
00:28:55
Speaker
Right. The thing I hated about your tweet is that they do look alike. Jude Law does look like Corky. Both when he was young and older. like The receding hairline matches. like It's very spot on. And it's funny, young Jude Law looks a lot like young Ewan McGregor. Exactly. And he can kind of use the force. so Right. Maybe I'll make it maybe we'll make a short about it just to get like real tinfoil hat just for fun.
00:29:22
Speaker
I just love how Corky Crease has become like the conspiracy theory character. really at least At least this one kind of makes sense. like It could happen. It's not going to happen. yeah it's it's not I don't even need it to happen, but I was like, why not? yeah Why not?
00:29:39
Speaker
But I feel like we should get into Crimson Jack. So they end up blasting out of Port Borgo, which I don't know if you knew what was going to happen. But as soon as he started bringing that ship around, I was like, they're going to light speed out of this port and it's going to fuck some shit up. And sure enough, it did. Right. And they make it to this moon, which I don't do. Did we get a name for the moon?
00:30:02
Speaker
no i don't think so just the moon so kim's moon so we go to kim's moon and and i really enjoyed the way the moon looked so and i'm not even talking about like the moon itself i'm talking about the entire like reveal of this moon. The music I loved. It was that typical like retro futuristic sci-fi, synthy, orchestral, like uneasy, but like intriguing kind of sound. And when it kind of revealed Kim's, but I don't know, outpost home study, whatever you want to call it.
00:30:44
Speaker
it had this like super cool like jules vern steam punk like very retro futuristic vibe but and like i don't know something about the music was giving me It was almost giving me like 20,000 leagues under the sea, which is Jules Verne, Steve Punk. like Right. So I really, really enjoy retro futurism. So I really, really was intrigued and really into this place when it was like revealed just the way that it looked, even just from the music. I've already been like, OK, when are they going to put that song on Spotify? Because it's one of the instrumental playlists. I loved it. What did you think about it, though? Because like um I could gush over it for a long time.
00:31:28
Speaker
I mean, I loved it too. I'm not as in tune with the references as you are. um i I don't know shit about that. ah I also loved it. And you know, just from a visual perspective, we've heard a lot about this with recent movies and the lighting being an issue in dark places because you can't see shit in dark places.
00:31:50
Speaker
Yeah, skeleton crew. Like, I don't know what the fuck is going on, but their director of photography is just not the same one that's been working on these recent Star Wars. They need to keep him around for a minute. Yeah. Her or them, whoever the fuck they're making it work, a raise and everything good coming to that person because You could actually see what was going on in the dark. And then, the you know, they used silhouettes and shadows to their favor, you know, in the shot where they're like walking away and it's a very beautiful silhouette yeah type um visual there. I really liked that. um And then, you know, and in the shots where you're supposed to see what's going on, you can see what's going on. So, yeah, shout out to this episode and that whole location.
00:32:38
Speaker
It was just the combination, the music, the aesthetic, the visuals, the lighting. Like it really popped off this episode. And I mean, I've talked about Port Borgo. We've talked about how beautiful that was. But this moon where there wasn't really much going on at all was still just as intriguing, in my opinion, just in a different way to where it wasn't the look at this spectacle. It was I was intrigued on being like, what are we going to find here? Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. That's what I really liked about it.
00:33:08
Speaker
Yeah, I did. And what we found was amazing.
Old Republic Lore and Planetary Secrets
00:33:11
Speaker
We found the Tootsie Pop Owl. but Oh, my God, not the Tootsie Pop Owl. OK, but it's like an owl cat rodent thing, but I liked Kim. She was cool. I liked her more than I expected to like her because I was like an owl. Really?
00:33:27
Speaker
and I'm the same way where I'm like, oh my god. Like I saw her in the little thumbnail for the episode I'm like, okay, it's the owl episode. We're gonna find out who the fuck this is. Now. I'm like, give me a comic Give me a spin-off show. Give me her novel Her and Maz Kanata are gonna go on an adventure in a comic. like Yes Kim is primed for ah Maz Kanata or even Dr. Afra. like oh yeah if they want Kim could be you know a million years old, so her and Dexter Jetster could have went on a mission before you know they play around with these aliens. they just
00:34:03
Speaker
Yeah, I kind of like it. I kind of like it, though, when they like take characters from like completely different like movies and eras and it's just like, here's their adventure together. So, yeah, she she is primed for a comic for sure. Oh, yeah. In the High Republic era, because that's the era that seems to be making these connections. Well. I don't know. Could she be Old Republic because this episode gave us a lot of Old Republic ah Well, let me not say a lot. It was a good tease of Old Republic lore, but I don't want to get into that just yet. I don't want to get ahead.
00:34:37
Speaker
Well, we're already here basically, so we might as well because taste like speed ah it's the same sequence where, you know, it's revealed. So the exact ah exposition dump is attin is part of the jewels of the Old Republic. There's nine planets, part of the jewel of the Old Republic. They were all hidden from the galaxy at one point um for their protection, as Kim puts it, which I think is very interesting. I think we should talk about that.
00:35:07
Speaker
um But then the other eight planets were destroyed and is the only one left, but it seems to have remained hidden from the rest of the galaxy, just like the other eight planets were.
00:35:20
Speaker
It's very interesting. I like I like the little lore dump that we got and the exposition that we got because I feel like it was needed. Yeah. um Especially just to kind of clue us into just peel back a little bit. Yeah. And I loved that. This is like Kim's speciality, where she is kind of like the treasure adventure, like, and she tries to pull out and whims like, oh, my God, is that a map? Right. Like, nope.
00:35:49
Speaker
It's like a tapestry or like a fragment of a tapestry. And I love the visual. I love a good visual in Star Wars. And that kind of had that re retrofuturism feel as well. Little steam punky. um So that kind of continued the theme. Yeah. But I'm very interested to see why at Aten was the only planet that is left and why it has prospered at the same time from the old Republic era, because it's a long, long time.
00:36:18
Speaker
Yeah, no, absolutely. Absolutely. And that's why I was going to say, yes, it peels back some more, but I just have more questions now where I'm just like, okay, get real, right. Like what, what the fuck is going on? I almost think that I might have been the planet or at least like the government or whatever was the one that destroyed the other planets. Is that possible that they had like their own war within their little bubble that they had and you know fighting for resources and Aten is the one that came out on top. I mean it could even be a situation where it was like they had eight jewels. Well it's a lot harder to find one jewel versus eight.
00:37:02
Speaker
um And we don't know if they were necessarily nearby each other. Obviously, the picture of it that we see is like a stylized version. So they may not actually be in close proximity, but it's like it's going to be harder to find one planet that's hidden from a nebula than.
00:37:19
Speaker
you know, seven other planets that may not be as easily hidden. and They may have said Aten is our best chance at keeping everything hidden and away and tucked somewhere where people aren't going to stumble upon it. So let's just kind of put everything in this place and we'll get rid of the other ones that way. And it could have been a situation where it was like, well, maybe one of the planets was rich in coaxium.
00:37:45
Speaker
And so they were like, well, we've got other planets with coaxium. So let's get rid of this planet. We'll take what resources are there. We'll put it on at. at and But then the galaxy will think, oh, well, the coaxium like deposit planet was now destroyed. So right kind of hiding the resources and consolidating them for themselves. I don't know. Could have been could have been this line with the supervisors. Who knows? There's something fishy.
00:38:13
Speaker
yeah something fishy for sure that's why the whole part about her saying it was for their protection for the planet's protections to protect their resources or whatever i'm like that's so fishy there's there's something about that where it's like there's no way it was for the protection of the citizens or whatnot if it was protecting anything it was protecting the resources well and that's the thing It could have been in the beginning protection for the resources and for the environment and whatnot. But then that was kind of weaponized or taken selfishly by the people that knew about it. And we're like, well, we don't actually have to share these because nobody needs to know that we're here.
00:38:55
Speaker
And when you think of it, like, there is a possibility where it makes sense that they're protecting the citizens because if there's so much treasure and so many people are sodding after it, pirate gangs that are very dangerous, it makes sense that they protect them from that. But then you start to think of all the things that they're able to get away with being separate from the rest of the galaxy where they don't have those same protections. You know, and are they doing something sinister, you know, to their citizens or, you know, I just feel like there's more going on. There's no way that it was just to protect the citizens, protect treasure. And even if it was like you said, it might have started out that way. It's definitely become something else where there's got to be something wrong going on here. Well, even the kids start to realize that this episode, because if you remember,
00:39:44
Speaker
when they're you know flying to the moon and they've got some downtime which love the fact that we got downtime with the characters. Yeah. um But they were like, all of our planets or all of our parents work with money. Yeah. And they're like, so many. And it's like maybe there is some truth to all these people talking about our planet has these treasures, because that's the one thing I feel like each kid stresses at some point in the episode. It's like our planet doesn't have treasure. There's nothing special about it. Even when it's like, it's so boring. Like, it's like, well, that's the perfect cover to hide something extraordinary.
00:40:19
Speaker
Very true, very true. And maybe the great work, as great as they it may seem, maybe it is for something more sinister. Or even not sinister, but just for something selfish.
00:40:31
Speaker
Yeah, it's kind of the train I'm on I think once we see that was it the senator that they were saying they wanted to talk to at the beginning or the supervisor supervisor Who the fuck is the supervisor? I know I really have no idea and it's funny because you know I've I've kind of listened to some other people's podcasts and like coverage of the show and And some people, I initially thought it was going to be something like super sinister and dark and like Imperial or something like that. Other people are saying, you know, it could just be some pirate lord who is just like, no, this is my treasure. You cannot have it. and I'm keeping it and hoarding it all to myself. So I initially thought it was something more sinister. But even we know in Star Wars,
00:41:16
Speaker
you don't have to be evil or Sith to be a sinister antagonist. Like we know ah somebody that I feel like we've seen with that is there are political people that can be sinister and in they could be the they could be the antagonist of the entire series. So it could just be a situation like that where it's just a normal person.
00:41:38
Speaker
but it could be the banking clan who knows yeah who knows there's so many possibilities and that's what's so nice about this series is it's like we don't know where it's gonna go we don't have very good guesses here but they keep they keep dropping little hints and it's keeping us engaged and it's making us theorize and think about it which We've talked about this being a good show and being creative. Like good art is going to make you think and it's going to make you question things. So I think it's doing a great job of that. I definitely want to know more about the supervisor. Every time they mention the supervisor, I'm like, who the fuck are you? Like, what about the supervisor? And even, you know, we talked about they say we want to have an immediate meeting with the supervisor and the droids just like, well, it's already been determined that
00:42:26
Speaker
it's illegal to leave the barrier. And if we contact the Republic, we're gonna lose our protection so we can't. So there's no point in talking to the supervisor. I'm like, the supervisor literally said, fuck them kids. Right, literally. And Wim's dad, like I said, seems to be perfectly fine with that. Maybe he's the supervisor. Do you think there's a world where he's the supervisor? Like, I know it sounds like a joke, but do you think there's a world where he's the supervisor?
00:42:57
Speaker
I don't know. I don't want him to be the supervisor because I think that's boring. And I can't think of an exciting way to be like, I am the supervisor. ah Yeah, like, but they open the door and he's like, when I am your father, I am the supervisor. No. Yeah.
Wim's Dad and Jod's True Motives
00:43:22
Speaker
Oh, who knows? Maybe.
00:43:26
Speaker
Maybe his ex-wife was the old supervisor. oh Maybe she is the supervisor. Right, and that's why she's absent. Hmm, Lots of things cooking up. This is the waste of years. We're never going to hear about Wim's other parent. I'm just like making up all these stories, and it's going to be one of those things that we just never hear about, like Cassie and sister.
00:43:47
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Oh, yeah. Where did that go hopefully season two at this point? I don't care Literally, there's so much other going on. It's like who cares and that's what I'm saying about wins other parent like Yeah, I'm making it way more of a thing that it needs to be. But like I said, good art is supposed to make you think and question stuff. And so clearly, if it's this little minute new detail and I'm like, maybe Wendell has trauma and that's why he's being understated. Like, you know, Wendell Wendell. Interesting. He's he's so uninteresting. He's so boring, which is why I'm like,
00:44:26
Speaker
He ain't gonna be no supervisor. He don't know nothing. But what if that's a cover up? What if he's boring? Right. That could be right. He's boring because there's more to him. Yeah. I mean, it's the Palpatine of it all. Yep. Yep. And speaking of characters, that there's more to Jod.
00:44:43
Speaker
Let's talk about it because in the end they kind of do a little, not a reveal, because again, just like the old Republic one, it has me asking more questions than I came in with. Yeah. But he basically says that like the kids, he's alone. And that's why he wants to help them because they want the same thing.
00:45:05
Speaker
I just keep, I've watched the episode, what, three hours ago now? For the past three hours, I've been trying to figure out what the same thing they want is. Because the kids, okay, but what home? Like, obviously the kids want to get home to at at and, but why is at and important to Jod? That's not his home, as far as we know.
00:45:30
Speaker
So they don't want the same thing. But then again, I don't think that he's like using them for something else because I think the kids are more of a liability at this point than anything else. So if he was just, you know, using them to escape and do something greater, he probably would have just left him by now. He probably would have left him at the moon or Port Borgo something.
00:45:53
Speaker
I'm trying to think about it and like really analyze what it could be and think deeper because I'm like, OK, he wants to get home. He wants to get to his family. Maybe he is just looking for a place of belonging because he's been kicked out. He was kicked out of his like cap and spot with the pirates. He's clearly a scoundrel with a shady past. So I'm sure he's been jumping around because he's trying to look for his big um treasure, essentially. He even mentions that to the but I don't know. I keep calling him his first mate, the crewman, whatever his name was. But he was like, I think I've finally found the big score that I've been searching for for so long. And I don't know. I don't know if if he's really wants the treasure, if he's just looking for a place to belong, if he is looking for his family.
00:46:46
Speaker
Yeah I just don't think it's his family though because that's the thing is it's like okay I can understand if he wants to get home but how is what he's doing right now with these kids going to get him home unless his home is at Aten because then too if he goes to Aten how's he gonna get out of there? Maybe I don't think this is gonna happen but maybe maybe maybe he's looking for force users interesting because we know at this time yeah we know at this time the jedi purge has happened and there's not a ton of jedi running around like there was right so is he a jedi that's ah
00:47:30
Speaker
I was so confused because they said that he was a Jedi. At Star Wars Celebration, when they first talked about the show, they said he was a Jedi. And I remember thinking, it's very weird that they even said that. There has to be more to the story because otherwise they would have just kept it a secret and then it would have been a big reveal. Oh, he's an Order 66 survivor. i I'm pretty sure they said he's an Order 66 survivor. So that's why I'm saying maybe he's looking for Oh, he could be looking for his family if he was taken away as a child to join the Jedi Order. But then again, we see we're going in circles here because what is the mission he's doing right now going to help him with that? It's not.
00:48:14
Speaker
resources. I guess. But it's like, that's why that's why my brain is like, because then you think of something and you're like, Oh, okay, that makes sense. But then you get you're like, Oh, forgot about that aspect there. It doesn't actually make sense. Yeah, it's kind of like we're hitting a brick wall, because it's like, Okay, but why does he want to go to at? attin and it And maybe it's just like a torn kind of same thing, like,
00:48:40
Speaker
I want to be happy. So I think I'm going to be happy because I'm going to find all these riches. And I also want to find where I am supposed to be or where I belong. And it's kind of like that. ah The selfish reason and then like the emotional reason.
00:48:56
Speaker
I don't know. Makes sense. We don't know enough. We're three episodes in. He's been in like one episode essentially and like a 10 minute clip. I know. Yeah, exactly. But, you know, maybe like you said, he is looking for treasures and maybe that's his original intent. But I think as the show goes on, he's going to realize he's going to realize that the treasure all along was family and belonging with this group of kids and getting to be their dad.
00:49:23
Speaker
which I think is going to happen. I think we're going to have a little bit of an arc like Mandalorian in season one for sure, because they kind of exercise. They're like, he feeds himself. He keeps himself warm. Like he doesn't care about the kids. He's like, he's literally says I was laughing so hard when he says he pulls up his scarf and the kids are like, it's cold here. While he pulls up his scarf, he's like, just keep walking. You'll get warm. It's like, OK, but bitch, you're putting on a scarf. So what the fuck?
00:49:50
Speaker
Well, keep in mind, while we all thought he selfishly made himself food and didn't make anybody find anybody else, he ate, filled his stuff and he was like, well, if you're hungry, there's more in the pot. Exactly.
00:50:03
Speaker
So yeah there's there's already little hints, but he was also a pirate captain and he wants to take care of his crew. So there's there's already that kind of familial but ah so outline that he may already have. This is just clearly in a different way because it's it's kids looking up to him as a leader. right It's not pirates.
00:50:25
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And he's not their captain. He's ah hired by the kids. Yeah, as an employee. Well, and what I think is funny about that, too, and kind of getting to that moment where they're like, no, you need to tell us the truth. I feel like KB really shine in this episode, especially because she was the main one questioning him throughout and up until that point, because she has that moment with Kim,
00:50:53
Speaker
where she's like, are you OK? Like what's going on with John and Kim's like Diddy? What does she say? Did he tell you like go with your gut or whatever? Yeah. And then at that moment, that's when KB finally is like, no, we're not doing this. Right. And she kind of takes charge. And I'm happy she got that moment this episode because myself and so many other people were like, we don't know nothing but about KB. She's kind of lacking in the last two episodes compared to the other characters.
00:51:20
Speaker
And her parents even got time to shine in this episode, I feel like, because they stood out in the group of the other parents and they got more speaking roles. So I'm happy we got some time with her. But I enjoyed seeing her as like the whiz kid in this episode be like, this is not calculating up these stories that you're telling. Right. There's no way you could be a Jedi, so.
00:51:45
Speaker
Tell us what's really going on. yeah So I really enjoyed that moment or those moments throughout the episode and then leading up to this point where we're now like, yeah, Jod, what's going on? Mm hmm.
00:51:56
Speaker
Yeah, ah but, you know, you say how, you know, she's the one asking questions and everything. I know she's a kid and I know they're all kids. I'm just like, how were they satisfied by the answer he gave? Like I was not, I wasn't, you know, like I said, I have more questions than I did going into that whole scene. And so I'm not saying that as a criticism or anything. Like I understand that it's part of the story of these kids, but I'm just like,
00:52:27
Speaker
from an in-universe perspective, what the fuck were they thinking when they were like, all right, that's good enough. You'll be on our team, deal made. I think it was the fact that one, they're naive because they're kids. Right. And on top of that, what other option do they have? Yeah, that's true. Well, Cam. They don't, they have no way to get back to at Atten.
00:52:49
Speaker
Yeah, that's true. And SM33 once again repeated that he has no idea what Atten is, never heard of it in this episode. And John had the thing with the coordinates in it. So.
00:53:01
Speaker
I feel like they kind of just were like, OK, that answer will suffice for now for now. Yeah. But like before we get blown up by the by these goons they're coming over and X wings. Let's just get on the ship and get out of here and then we can continue this conversation. It was like he opened the door to the conversation, maybe in their eyes. And it's like something that I and I hope they revisit it, too.
00:53:26
Speaker
Because I do want to learn what are his motives. I don't think he's necessarily has dastardly motives like he's going to ditch the kids and be like, I'm going to add on.
Emotional Connections and Future Excitement
00:53:39
Speaker
And it's all going to be for me. I don't think that's going to be the case, but I feel like they do need him. And if your theory holds true that he's going to come around and be a little fatherly figure, he needs them just as much as they need him.
00:53:53
Speaker
Yeah, very true. I love that. It's very Star Wars, very Star Wars. Very Star Wars. But Scotty, we're at the end of the episode here. And even after discussing everything, I still have no idea where the fuck you cried. So oh please tell us please share with the class. Perfect, because this is a perfect segue.
00:54:15
Speaker
into that section. So as the kids are, they're escaping the planet, they've got to get to the other side of the moon. And each kid kind of gets their duty, their own smugglers run at galaxy. They each get their duty where Neil has to fly and it's so chaotic. KB is kind of like the seer agenda of the group like playing on the computer and checking the coordinates and listening to the radio and running things. And then Fern and Wim get to go in the turrets. And it's just the moment of Wim's excitement of popping up into that turret and like this super cool space battle that I feel like we all have pretended to be
00:54:58
Speaker
in a turret in space in Star Wars, shooting down other. I mean, usually we're not dreaming of shooting down other X-wings. Right. But like shooting down the bad guys are the people that were against. It was just so Star Wars. But like in the first episode, like in those moments where they're pretending to be Jedi and, you know, lightsaber dueling, he's playing with his action figures. He's drawing pictures of Jedi at school. Like it's just those moments where I'm seeing myself as a kid in my experience with Star Wars as he's experiencing it. So one, it made me very happy. But then I got a little bit emotional about it because I was like, oh, my God, like he's getting to do the thing that we all want to do. And so to this day, I still want to be up in a spaceship shooting down the enemies. I have horrible aim, so it probably wouldn't be very good.
00:55:50
Speaker
Um, but still like just that moment of popping up into the canopy and seeing like the vastness of space and like spacecraft like coming at you like everybody knows the scene where Luke first jumped into the turret of the Millennium Falcon and he's just like having the time of his life. It's just like shooting womp rats back on Tatooine like it's just that it's just that fun moment and that made me emotional. And I said, you know what? I'm gonna let it make me emotional because I'm healing my inner child.
00:56:19
Speaker
Yeah. but we have I don't feel stupid. So right. There you go. Well, I'm just glad it wasn't because I was a little scared. You were going to be like, when Jod said he's alone and he needs, he's yeah just looking for a family. It just had me so emotional. He is not Asajj Ventress.
00:56:41
Speaker
Yeah, that's what I was expecting, but you actually gave a ah beautiful, thoughtful answer that, you know, you I can very much relate to. And yeah, it is a, it definitely is a big moment. Like even when Wim, you know, he's about to jump into the tour and he like does a little smile and and laughs amongst all the chaos.
00:57:01
Speaker
You know, he's still after its have after complaining. Why is Neil get to fly the ship? And it's like, no, you're getting it. Even I think it even more fun like job to do yeah is popping up into that turret. and Yeah, it's literally that the smile, the excitement. It's like that would be all of us.
00:57:18
Speaker
Everybody listening to this podcast me and you that would be exactly how all of us would react and even fern She let down her tough exterior and was smiling and laughing and having a great time as well And it was just so fun to see I loved it yeah overall i think a very wholesome episode we continued the journey we have more questions now some answered but more questions than anything else and i'm excited you know we're not even halfway through the season which feels kind of nice because it feels like we're taking it at a slow pace where i don't know why but it seems like a lot of the other star wars shows
00:57:55

For some reason, the release seems so fast, whether it's because they're doing three episode premieres or, you know, whatever the fuck. I don't know. It just feels like I just feel like pacing is a big issue with a lot of recent Star Wars projects, but I don't have any issues with these three episodes and the pacing we have so far. Same. I completely agree. It's that the galaxy opened up to the kids and this story has opened up to us and we're just literally along for the ride. I'm loving it. Loving it.
