Have you ever wondered what the emotions in your dreams might mean? In this episode, we explore the vital role emotions play in dream interpretation and how they can help us discern the source of a dream—whether it comes from God, our soul, or even a demonic influence. Understanding the overall emotional tone—whether positive, neutral, or negative—provides key insights into the dream's meaning and helps us understand what’s being communicated.

As discussed in previous episodes, not all dreams are from God; some reflect our inner thoughts and unresolved emotions, while others may be designed to deceive or cause fear. Discerning the source of a dream is crucial, and emotions provide essential clues. For example, dreams marked by hope and encouragement, even when addressing difficult topics, align with God's character, while those filled with condemnation, shame, or hopelessness do not. Tune in to this episode for practical guidance on navigating the emotions in your dreams with the help of Holy Spirit, and learn how to understand the messages these emotions reveal as they relate to your waking life.

*Scripture References: Hebrews 4:12; Galatians 5:22-33; Genesis 15:12-16; John 16:33; James 1:17-18; Hebrews 12:6

“God’s atmosphere is not one of anxiety, criticism, shame, or darkness.”

“As we grow in wisdom, discernment, and yielding our hearts, minds, and spirits to God, He’s going to start to entrust us with more of the mysteries. More of the things that are ‘underwater’. This is what it means to ‘breathe underwater’; you see more of what is happening on the deep, deep end, rather than what you see at face value because He wants us to be wise and discerning. He wants us to make decisions based on truth, not on being manipulated by what we see. And more than anything, He wants us, as His kids, to establish His kingdom on earth and to intercede and pray that these situations would be turned around, people would be set free, and truth would be revealed.”

Speaker
Underwater.
00:00:57
Speaker
You have made it to episode two of season three. Welcome, welcome. My name is Margo. I'm the host of the show. Today, we're gonna jump in to a very important topic, which is your emotions in your dreams. What are you feeling in your dreams? I know not everybody likes to talk about emotions, but it's important that we do it, especially in dreams, because it's the center of getting the correct interpretation. Also, I can't stop singing.
00:01:25
Speaker
You got me feeling emotions in my head, so I thought I would just share it with you. any Anyone? Yeah, right, Carrie, old school. Love it. Okay,

Meaning of Number Two

00:01:36
Speaker
but before we jump in to the content on emotions in our dreams, we're gonna talk about the number two because it's episode two today, and the number two,
00:01:46
Speaker
has so many different interpretations. It's one that's been personal to me, especially doubles, like 22 and 222. But two has a lot of different ones, so it's going to be up to you to discern how the Holy Spirit is speaking to you in whatever context you're seeing the number two. You might be seeing it on the clock. You might be seeing it in dreams. You might be seeing it in visions. It might keep showing up as your number when you're ordering food at a restaurant.
00:02:12
Speaker
But once you start to see a number repeat, pay attention. So the number two,

Biblical Pairs and Unity

00:02:20
Speaker
this one's going to shock you, can mean double. Oh, I know. It can be speaking of a double portion, a double blessing, double for your trouble. It could also be talking about a witness. God will often talk about witnesses in scripture where he he wants a witness to his word or what he's doing.
00:02:41
Speaker
or he'll send people out by twos, just like Jesus, he sent the disciples out by twos. Part of that was for a witness, but part of that was probably because there was safety, right? And there was accountability in that. Similarly, when we're talking about, I was just reading in Joshua, how the spies that went into Jericho ahead of time and ended up meeting Rahab there were two of them and if we're gonna go back to Moses sending the 12 spies all 12 came back saying indeed it is the land flowing with milk and honey but only
00:03:16
Speaker
two of them had the courage to actually go in and face the giants, which of course were Caleb and Joshua, who ended up being the ones that led the Israelites to inherit that land. But look at all the twos. Witnesses are important. That could be what the number two is meaning. It could also have to do with division.
00:03:34
Speaker
in a good way or a negative way. God brings division where there needs to bring division, but the enemy also tries to bring division where God's trying to bring unity. So just

Discerning Recurring Numbers

00:03:45
Speaker
pay attention. Sometimes God will actually divide you from a relationship or from something else you've agreed with or from a job or for a play from a place because he is actually wanting to separate you from things that are not of him or that are not beneficial to you. I love how the Bible talks about the word of God being sharper than a double-edged sword that divides
00:04:12
Speaker
There's that division word between bone and marrow. And the whole point of that is that it's very, very sharp and it can get to the heart of what it needs to get to the heart of. So there's another meaning for two. It could also have to do with multiplication. If you're seeing twos, it could have to do with that. So I hope that that helped you in seeing the number twos, but always, always, always ask the Holy Spirit what he's telling you. Don't just take my word for

Role of Emotions in Dream Interpretation

00:04:39
Speaker
it.
00:05:00
Speaker
Okay, we are jumping into our emotions in dreams. Why does it matter what we're feeling in our dreams? Oh, it matters a lot my friend and let me tell you why. We want to get the accurate interpretation for our dreams and a part of doing that is knowing the source or what kind of dream it is.
00:05:22
Speaker
When I say a source, that means where is the dream source? Not every dream comes from God, right? I'm sure you could experience that to be true. Not every dream comes from God. Some come from the demonic realm when you're having bad dreams or nightmares or stressful dreams or maybe they're coming from your soul. It's important to identify the source because that will help us to know how to interpret it. We interpret all of those differently and yes, we do interpret all of those dreams.
00:05:53
Speaker
Another reason we want

Avoiding Emotional Bias in Interpretation

00:05:54
Speaker
to know is because it's probably a part of the actual interpretation, especially if it's a soul dream, which we'll get into in just a moment. I want to just say this is one of the greatest, most common mistakes that I see people make when they're trying to interpret because they are misinterpreting the source of the dream and the tone of the dream.
00:06:15
Speaker
So many of us are accustomed to feeling a level of anxiety or stress or maybe shame or maybe criticism We're so accustomed to that that when that emotion shows up in our dream We kind of don't think anything of it and because all of us yes all of us are renewing our minds to rightly understand the character of God because we've been raised in the world by fallible humans and humans who were doing the best that they could in most circumstances. But we have been trained to believe things that aren't true about God because we've experienced them from our parents or from other authorities or leaders or friends or emotional
00:06:56
Speaker
ah romantic relationships, right? So we're all in this journey of seeing God rightly and and learning his character more rightly and he loves to tell us who he really is and show us who he really is. Dreams are a way that he does that.
00:07:14
Speaker
But because we have often this fallible view of who God is, we can receive a dream that feels bad where we're experiencing criticism or shame or fear or anxiety in the dream. And we might think

Positive vs Negative Emotional Atmosphere

00:07:28
Speaker
that it's from God, especially if we've experienced criticism from a father or a parent or we have that kind of accusation happening all the time. But let me tell you this.
00:07:39
Speaker
Those dreams are not the atmosphere of God. He does not need to shame us or make us feel afraid or foreboding to give us a warning about something. No, no, no, no, no. See, we can actually have a dream that's giving us insight into something that's coming. Maybe the imagery is not positive, but it can actually still feel like neutral or even positive emotion in the dream.
00:08:03
Speaker
We can see really positive things in a dream and feel negatively. So I want us to pay attention to what we're feeling with what we're seeing. God's atmosphere is not one of anxiety, criticism, shame, darkness.
00:08:23
Speaker
It says in Galatians

Dark Dreams with Redemptive Ends

00:08:24
Speaker
that the fruit of the spirit is what? Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. That is an indicator that the spirit is there with you.
00:08:42
Speaker
Now I'm going to give a caveat here because God has been known to allow us to see things where it might feel ah scary or it might feel dark in the dream or maybe there was even an experience of fear in witnessing something but this is where discernment No, this is not the only place where discernment is the most important gift. I think that we could be exercising it and learning in this day and age period, but especially in dream life, this is where discernment is the most important.
00:09:17
Speaker
Just because something feels bad doesn't mean it's not God, but God also doesn't deal in shame and criticism and foreboding and fear. So that might feel contradictory, but you know what I mean when you can discern the difference. I'm going to give an example just briefly about how God spoke to Abraham.
00:09:42
Speaker
In Genesis 15, 12, this is right after God makes a covenant with Abraham and he cuts the animals in two and all of that jazz. Then it says that Abraham went into a deep sleep and he had a dark dream and it was really dark and he was terrified with what he saw. God ended up showing him and speaking that his people would go into slavery for 400 years.
00:10:10
Speaker
and that it would be really hard for them, but that in the end they would return to the land and all God's promises to him would be fulfilled. It

Identifying God's Dreams

00:10:18
Speaker
also says in this moment that you will die at peace, even though you're essentially not seeing the end of this promise, because God had just promised that he would make his seed as multiplied as the stars in the sky, that he would be a father of many nations. Right now we know that ibrad Abraham didn't see that in his life, even though he did see the fu fulfillment of the promise of Isaac,
00:10:40
Speaker
But in this dark, dark dream, God gave that dream to Abraham. But what happened in the end of that? He showed him something that was coming and in order to show him, but I will deliver them. They will end up taking the land and you are going to die in peace.
00:11:01
Speaker
It wasn't just here's a bunch of negative imagery where you have to sort through and figure out what's going on and there's no hope. That is another big indicator God is not in it. In John 1633 it says, and the world are going to have tribulations.
00:11:15
Speaker
But be of good cheer because I have overcome the world. That's what Jesus says. So if you do have a dream that you senses from God, even though it's feeling kind of dark or maybe he's showing you something that's coming, if it doesn't have a redemptive end, if it doesn't have instruction on how to pray or show you what he is doing, then I would very, very, very strongly doubt that it was from him. Now,

Soul Dreams and Self-awareness

00:11:39
Speaker
that is kind of a fear.
00:11:42
Speaker
experience versus what I mentioned before, whether shame or criticism or foreboding or this feeling of I'm not enough or i didn't I didn't do something right. I had a friend just the other day who had one of these dreams and she, just like the rest of us, is working through some of her own mindsets about God and who she is, right? We're all doing that. And she brought this dream to me and my friend and I could feel when she was sharing it with me that it was definitely demonic. There was demonic stuff going on.
00:12:12
Speaker
And she was thinking that, oh, maybe God's trying to correct me. Maybe he's trying to show me something that went that I did wrong. And when I asked her, like what do you what were the emotions in the dream? Was it overarchingly positive or was it overarchingly negative? And she told me it was negative, then I pretty much immediately knew, okay, this isn't from God. And I said to her, this to me sounds like the enemy trying to intimidate you, trying to pull you back into that shame and criticism. This is not God's voice.
00:12:42
Speaker
If God wants to correct you or show you something, He doesn't have to use shame. He doesn't do that. Shame isn't from Him. There is no shifting shadow within Him. He is pure light. He is pure love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness. Even when He is going to bring discipline, it can feel so good. And I have experienced this myself.
00:13:07
Speaker
This is why I ask every single time that I'm interpreting a dream for someone, I ask them what they would title it, the dream, when they had it in case that's significant. And I ask them what the emotions were in the dream. Not necessarily name every emotion for me, but tell me if it was overarchingly positive or negative, because that is going to help me know how to interpret this. If it's overwhelmingly positive or neutral, then I'm going to go with this is God dream.
00:13:36
Speaker
If it's overwhelmingly negative,

Connecting Dream Emotions to Reality

00:13:38
Speaker
I'm gonna go, okay, is it demonic or is it soul? Now, why does that matter? If it's a soul dream, and I will go into more of this, and I did go into this in season two, I would have you go back and listen to the Soul Dream series, super powerful.
00:13:53
Speaker
is our souls are speaking to us while we're sleeping, especially about things that we don't have space to process or see while we're awake. So if you're having an overly emotional dream and you're feeling maybe fear or like you're rushing or you're being chased or maybe that you can't get something right and you keep messing up or something's your fault, I would ask yourself, is this something that I experience in my waking life? Is this a problem that I've had in my life where I continually kind of feel this way? And in that case, if you sense that it is a soul dream, I would actually take the emotion and be even more granular about it. Okay, what was I feeling in this moment? If I could name what I was feeling, what would it be? I would say I was feeling criticized for failing at something, and then I felt shame.
00:14:41
Speaker
Great. Now that you've written that down, ask yourself and the Holy Spirit to help you. God, where is it in my life that I'm feeling that very thing? Is that happening in my waking life? Is that something that I felt and when I was growing up and that's still unresolved? Because my soul is

Countering Demonic Influence

00:15:00
Speaker
telling me while I'm sleeping that this is what it's concerned with. So even in that moment when the emotion is negative, it's invaluable.
00:15:08
Speaker
So we can actually connect with our soul and figure out what's going you on in there so we can bring it to God and experience healing. None of this is ever exposed or brought up to bring shame. That is again, not how he operates. That is not his atmosphere. It's only unto freedom and to give us awareness of what's going on in our own soul.
00:15:28
Speaker
Now, if it's negative and it isn't soul, then it's probably demonic. And in that case, I would advise you to go back and listen to Redeeming Nightmares from season one. But also we learn to flip the nightmares because the enemy only ever tries to counterfeit. He only tries to manipulate us into thinking what he is trying to nary in our life. So in this example of my friend's dream where she was feeling like she did something wrong and maybe God was trying to correct her, it was pretty easy to flip.
00:15:55
Speaker
There were a couple different spirits, I would say, in that dream, trying to make her feel something, so we just flipped it. Okay, this is what you're usually feeling. God doesn't need to correct you through this way. It's probably these spirits just trying to make you feel bad and accuse you and make you think that this is happening, but it's totally propaganda. It's enemy propaganda. You can flush that. What is

Manipulative Dreams and Discernment

00:16:16
Speaker
God saying?
00:16:17
Speaker
God is saying that he is covering you in grace, that it isn't about performance, that it isn't about getting something right or wrong. And we could even use specifics from that dream to flip it and see what God was actually saying to her. Now, there's a lot more teaching on that, which I'm not gonna go into today, but this is a big umbrella picture of why we pay attention to our emotions in our dreams. Like I mentioned with the caveat with the Abraham dream,
00:16:44
Speaker
There are other moments that are just going to take discernment where it might not feel that black and white or that cut and dried, right? As soon as we try to make a rule, there's going to be an exception. And I would call these more principles than rules or laws. These are principles based on who we know God to be.
00:17:00
Speaker
But there can always be exceptions where it's up to us to discern, okay, maybe that one felt pretty dark, but I think God was giving me a heads up about something and showed me in the end how it was going to play out positively.
00:17:15
Speaker
Now, especially if you are new at dream interpretation, I don't want you to to even spend much time thinking about this next thing I'm going to say. This is far more of an exception than anything else. But I do believe that there are times where a dream actually feels like it's positive and it was demonically inspired because there was a manipulation intentionally happening.
00:17:39
Speaker
Now this is something, this is like 301, okay? We're trying to still stay in 101, maybe a little 201, but this feels like 301 where I have been in a season specifically where God is giving me discernment and intercession and strategies involving manipulation and control, Jezebel, kind of a narcissistic spirit, which is all about manipulation. And there can be a lot of emotional manipulation in that.
00:18:04
Speaker
So I have had a series of dreams where what I'm seeing in the dream is the narrative that that spirit is trying to give me. And it doesn't feel bad

Growing in Discernment and Wisdom

00:18:15
Speaker
in the dream. It feels like, oh, that makes sense. Then I wake up and I go, oof, that feels bad. I think that in the dream I was seeing the narrative of the enemy, but what I'm feeling now that I'm waking up, discerning is that's actually a manipulation. That's not what was going on there.
00:18:33
Speaker
But even in this example, I believe the Lord allowed me to have that dream because it showed me the narrative, the facade that's happening. And I also had discernment about, oh, that's not actually what's going on behind the surface in these situations. That's just what is being presented. And it gave me extra sight and language into what was happening in a certain situation. So I knew how to pray.
00:18:57
Speaker
It's easy to just look at something at face value and be like, oh, that couldn't be happening. And then God actually gives you discernment of something that is happening there. And then you have this argument between your mind and your spirit, right? But as we grow in wisdom, as we grow in discernment and yielding our hearts and our minds and our spirits to God, he's going to start to entrust us with more of the mysteries.
00:19:18
Speaker
More of the things that are under underwater, really, this is what it means to breathe underwater. More of what is happening on the deep, deep end rather than what you see at face value because he wants to make us wise and discerning. He wants us to make decisions based on truth, not on being manipulated by what we see.
00:19:41
Speaker
and really more than

Listener Engagement and Emotional Analysis

00:19:42
Speaker
anything, he wants us as his kids to establish his kingdom on earth and to intercede and pray that these situations would be turned around, that people would be set free, that truth would be revealed, right? So that's the only reason I give it that example in case there are some of you that have actually been having some of that kind of a dream, which feels a little bit harder to discern. I'm just gonna leave that there for now. I could do a whole series teaching on that and maybe I will If you are having those kinds of dreams where you suspect there might be some um manipulation in the dream emotionally, shoot me an email. I'd love to hear about it. If you have questions, feel free to send those to me as well. But before I open a whole big can of worms, which I might have just done,
00:20:29
Speaker
Sorry, not really sorry, but kind of sorry. I am going to end this episode and just leave you with the food for a thought of how important the emotions are in the dream, specific to discernment and knowing the source and also in knowing yourself and your own heart and stuff that might be coming up in that.
00:20:48
Speaker
Okay, let me know if you have questions. I'm always here. My email is in the show notes. Until next time, I'm wishing you such happy dreaming. Keep diving deeper, guys.
