Podcast Intro & Movie Inspirations

00:01:11
Julian Contreras Jr
Yep. Holding it down over here. We're, we're doing okay.
00:01:13
Kendahl
Yeah?
00:01:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:01:15
Kendahl
ah You know, it's it's funny. I got to tell you. So there's... to have the Our intro is the THXL. And we've said this a few times. We've talked about it, I think, probably agnosium, but that's okay.
00:01:28
Kendahl
it's It's there for a reason. it was It's something that kind of triggered our... infatuation with movies and and you know everything entertainment. and I remember the very distinct element.
00:01:37
Julian Contreras Jr
Yep.
00:01:39
Kendahl
It is ah Die Hard with a Vengeance. that That movie is synonymous with that sound in my head. Because when I had the VHS tape, we had bought... Do you remember the do you remember the speaker system, Iowa?
00:01:56
Kendahl
A-I-W-A?
00:01:57
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:01:58
Kendahl
Okay, so I feel like everybody in the 90s had some version of a speaker setup from them, right? And anyway, my dad had gone out and bought a surround sound ah version of one of their speaker setups.
00:02:15
Kendahl
And we had just bought it. And then as a kid, i went out and bought Die Hard with a Vengeance because I was a big Die Hard fan.
00:02:23
Julian Contreras Jr
okay
00:02:23
Kendahl
So I, I remember putting that in and my dad got so pissed off at me because it was like, i know, seven o'clock at night. And I just cranked that sucker up and he comes downstairs.
00:02:36
Kendahl
What's going on? i was like, I'm just playing them the

Catch-Up: School, Trips, & Father's Day

00:02:40
Kendahl
the movie. He's like, you don't need it that loud. and I'm thinking to myself, yes, I do.
00:02:45
Julian Contreras Jr
Why'd you buy it?
00:02:47
Kendahl
like Why provide this amazing, awesome sound system if you don't let me actually utilize it? So anyway, i just that's always a synonymous part of my like my brain. Every time I hear it, that's that's what I think of. So anyway, welcome to the memories of Kendall.
00:03:03
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. But dad, this goes to 11. okay
00:03:09
Kendahl
oh my gosh so anyway i i have to apologize i i have been out because you know it was the end of the school year i had a lot of stuff going on and then i decided to take a little trip with the family and i feel like they all kind of coincided with each other where i really i just but i wasn't able to make it for few weeks or two two three weeks
00:03:30
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, something'm like that. It doesn't matter.
00:03:31
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:03:31
Julian Contreras Jr
You're here now.
00:03:32
Julian Contreras Jr
We don't need to look back.
00:03:32
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:03:32
Kendahl
Yeah. Well, anyway, so, ah but you know, school is out. I am, I am now done teaching for the summer. um Everybody kept asking me if I was going to summer school and there were ah set of expletives that I said, absolutely not.
00:03:47
Kendahl
And just not taking on that, that, that element with school kids. Cause in all honesty, I just needed a mental break. yeah,
00:03:57
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I don't blame you at all.
00:03:59
Kendahl
so But anyway, how about you? How you been?
00:04:03
Julian Contreras Jr
I've been good. we i would be remiss if we didn't mention a happy belated Father's Day.
00:04:10
Kendahl
Yes.
00:04:10
Julian Contreras Jr
was two days ago.
00:04:12
Kendahl
Yes.
00:04:12
Julian Contreras Jr
we were We planned for today, so happy Father's Day to everybody out there that celebrates with your father. You are a father. you Whatever. However you celebrated it, i hope you had a good time.
00:04:25
Kendahl
And happy to all the mothers that helped make the fathers.
00:04:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Well, yeah. what Yeah.
00:04:34
Kendahl
I mean, without the mothers, we couldn't have Father's Day. So just you know just put out the truth there.
00:04:39
Julian Contreras Jr
Yes.
00:04:40
Kendahl
but Little half birds and the bees element for our little ones.
00:04:40
Julian Contreras Jr
um
00:04:43
Kendahl
Just go ask your mom.

Social Media Algorithms & Movie Memories

00:04:45
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. but Other than that, baseball is starting to wind down. We're trying to make the final spot for the tournament. We got a game tomorrow that will decide that. So if he makes it, great.
00:04:54
Kendahl
Oh, nice.
00:04:55
Julian Contreras Jr
If not, we still learned a lot and we we can't wait for the next season.
00:05:01
Kendahl
Yeah. I remember playing baseball as a kid. That was a big thing for me. um Like, we always had we always had sponsors. So we were like, I remember being the Anderson Lumber Pittsburgh Pirates.
00:05:15
Kendahl
And was like...
00:05:15
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, yeah. No, we don't have that anymore.
00:05:16
Kendahl
Yeah. Yeah. but
00:05:21
Julian Contreras Jr
We're the ah shut-off, turn-on Roughnecks.
00:05:24
Kendahl
yeah
00:05:27
Julian Contreras Jr
I would totally sponsor a team, by the way, with my own money if we could be the Roughnecks.
00:05:32
Kendahl
Oh, yeah, that'd be awesome.
00:05:32
Julian Contreras Jr
Rico's Roughnecks.
00:05:35
Kendahl
That'd be awesome. Oh, my gosh. Okay, so I was scanning through Instagram. And sometimes Instagram, the algorithms don't always catch the, you know, some of the things that should be not on Instagram.
00:05:47
Kendahl
And I was flipping through Instagram other day. And it just reminds me because ah that shower scene from that movie popped up on my Instagram. And I was like, what? The wife's not around. Okay.
00:06:00
Kendahl
I remember this scene. if you If you know, you know. If you don't know, ah watch it. It's a great movie.
00:06:08
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah starship troopers is a great show there was uh one particular scene in there where i
00:06:10
Kendahl
Oh, such a great movie. Such a great movie. Anyway.

Kendall's Weight Loss Journey

00:06:16
Julian Contreras Jr
knew it was coming when i was folding laundry i was watching with my wife and like oh here it comes and she's like here comes what and i was like oh that and she's like oh my gosh how many times have you watched this movie i was like probably too many
00:06:30
Kendahl
i know. um Okay. Estimates. ah At least 10 times. I've seen that movie at least 10 12 times.
00:06:38
Julian Contreras Jr
ah It's got to be at least 20.
00:06:39
Kendahl
Oh. 90, it was like I want to say it was like like right there.
00:06:40
Julian Contreras Jr
Because it came out, it wasn't a high school and we had sleepovers and it was one we always watch.
00:06:48
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, 97, yeah.
00:06:48
Kendahl
like right at the...
00:06:48
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:06:49
Kendahl
Yeah, something like that. just But anyway, you know what? Hey, hey we're here for the entertainment. It's a great movie, people. like this is this was This is one of those movies that legitimately, it never didn't know what it was.
00:06:55
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:07:01
Kendahl
It was just a movie about people killing bugs and swearing and violence and heads popping off and, and you know... body body parts showing up when you wanted them and you know the the good kind of body parts not the bad kind of body parts that fall apart and you know but it was just it was just a good movie it had all the great elements and then on top of all of that the weirdness of it is is that like in the middle of it it's like and the mormon settle civilization of the new temple and it's like wait what what why are you randomly throwing that in
00:07:14
Julian Contreras Jr
ah Oh my God.
00:07:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. My wife laughed. ah
00:07:32
Julian Contreras Jr
She was like, wait, what? And I was like, yeah, she just started laughing.
00:07:35
Kendahl
yeah
00:07:37
Julian Contreras Jr
She's like, oh my gosh.
00:07:38
Kendahl
Well, it's, it's not, you know, it's also not too far from, uh, uh, what's the show on, on Amazon prime.
00:07:38
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:07:44
Kendahl
dang it. Now I can't think of it. And it's like, they take over the, uh, they say the, the, the, the Mormon starship and it's like the the temple that's going off into the distance whatever. Um, Oh, I'll have to, uh,
00:07:55
Julian Contreras Jr
I'm not sure about that one, but yeah, it was Fort Joe Smith was what it was.
00:08:01
Kendahl
Well, and it turned out one of the writers was was a ah member of that church. And so was like, now I can't remember. But anyway, um so yeah, it's just a great movie. All right, moving on.
00:08:12
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, moving on.
00:08:13
Kendahl
So, all right, I got to say. um So I haven't talked about a lot ah in in a while. So back in December, I started um my my interest of losing weight. And then I approached the doctor, had some major medical issues. So he put me on a medication that helped me lose some

TV Series Critique: The Last of Us

00:08:33
Kendahl
weight.
00:08:33
Kendahl
um I am officially down 65 pounds from, I know, from where I started.
00:08:38
Julian Contreras Jr
Look at you.
00:08:41
Kendahl
So I i was pushing 270. And I am right now at right about 210. So...
00:08:52
Julian Contreras Jr
Nice.
00:08:53
Kendahl
so
00:08:53
Julian Contreras Jr
That six pack coming in nice.
00:08:55
Kendahl
Uh, no, no six pack. It's, it's, it's still, it's definitely still a um, you know, it's like one of those bubble bags that you, you hang on to and it's still got stuff there, but no, um,
00:09:07
Julian Contreras Jr
No, for this episode, I'm going to have to put like a six pack abs and then like show what it was about. I'm doing it.
00:09:14
Kendahl
it's like it's like It's like the bigger guy that has the six-pack abs shirt on. you know
00:09:19
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:09:19
Kendahl
ah
00:09:20
Julian Contreras Jr
Are the airbrushed at the beach?
00:09:20
Kendahl
No, but but yeah but today was my day. Today was my day. I went through my closet and I threw out all of my clothes that just don't fit anymore. And I filled a ah legit... We just bought two recliner chairs and it came in a box.
00:09:36
Kendahl
And I just filled a recliner chair box. of clothes. I emptied out all my drawers, my closet. um So, yeah, I mean, honestly, it was it was kind of a it was a moment for me today. It was kind of nice.
00:09:48
Julian Contreras Jr
Good job.
00:09:49
Kendahl
so Anyway, I just want to put that out there. i was It's been kind of a crazy situation just going through this. and But a lot of good things have happened. I've i've made a lot of good choices.
00:10:00
Kendahl
For some reason, soda now just sucks.
00:10:03
Julian Contreras Jr
It's gross, yeah.
00:10:03
Kendahl
I can't... Ah, dude, I can't even drink soda anymore. like i will Okay, if I go to dinner with my family and I sit down at a good dinner, I'll have like a Coke, like a glass of Coke or Pepsi.
00:10:15
Kendahl
um But if I go do a refill, I won't even i wouldn't even finish half of it. like I just... That's it.
00:10:21
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:10:21
Kendahl
That's that's my that's my jam. Other than that, I get...
00:10:23
Julian Contreras Jr
Sometimes I'll be like super thirsty and I'll be like, oh yeah, I big like 20 ounce Coke Zero sounds good.
00:10:28
Kendahl
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:10:29
Julian Contreras Jr
And then I finished like half of it. I'm like, kind of sucks.
00:10:33
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:10:34
Julian Contreras Jr
spent all this money on it. So I better drink it.
00:10:36
Kendahl
Right? Yeah. I did that with a Mountain Dew, some type of pineapple blast. I don't remember was. It's like summer blast blend. So I tried that out the other day I finished half of it in like four hours.
00:10:50
Kendahl
It took me four hours to get through half a 20 ounce bottle.
00:10:52
Julian Contreras Jr
Nice.
00:10:53
Kendahl
And I'm sitting there going, and i just, I'm not, it's not me. I don't want it. And I ended up dumping it out. I just, and yeah and then I feel bad. I went to 7-Eleven and I bought it and spent $2 on it. And now I'm like, they're down the drain.
00:11:03
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Yeah, give me some water.
00:11:05
Kendahl
Anyway. Yeah. Oh, really? So...
00:11:09
Julian Contreras Jr
Anyway.
00:11:10
Kendahl
Alright. So... i Can we just jump right into it? um So, you watched The Last of Us.
00:11:19
Julian Contreras Jr
Yes, I did.
00:11:20
Kendahl
With season two.
00:11:20
Julian Contreras Jr
Seasons one and two.
00:11:21
Kendahl
Okay. So... Now, here's my question. Did you watch season one prior to this? this When season two came out?
00:11:27
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I watched them when it came out.
00:11:29
Kendahl
Oh, okay. Okay. So, I... You know, I finished it and I... I liked it in parts. And then it sparked a big conversation of something that we both feel strongly about.
00:11:46
Kendahl
and And we'll get to that. But did you like the season ending?
00:11:54
Julian Contreras Jr
and We're talking about season two right now?
00:11:56
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:11:56
Julian Contreras Jr
No, absolutely not. It lost me about two episodes in. I felt like it went...
00:12:01
Kendahl
Okay. Okay.
00:12:03
Julian Contreras Jr
I never played the game, so I'm not one of those guys where it's the game. need it to be the game part. I need to be like this. No. i I just felt like they were trying to make me look dumb by not understanding what was going on.
00:12:20
Kendahl
Yeah, I can understand.
00:12:21
Julian Contreras Jr
And so...
00:12:21
Kendahl
I can see that. I definitely can see that. that from And I think that's the one thing they they didn't do in the first season.
00:12:33
Kendahl
I felt like in the first season, they kept it alive regardless of knowing the video game or not.
00:12:40
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, that's why I really enjoyed it because I never played it. I've never seen anything on it, but I knew it was a video game and I knew some of the characters. And so I did a little bit of research, but then I just, was like, whatever, I'm just going to watch it and see if I like it or not.
00:12:49
Kendahl
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:12:54
Julian Contreras Jr
And sure enough, season one, I did like, I did enjoy.
00:12:58
Kendahl
Right.
00:12:58
Julian Contreras Jr
ah Pedro Pascal for sure carried that show.
00:13:03
Kendahl
Oh, he hit it out of the park.
00:13:05
Julian Contreras Jr
And till the very end when that whole hospital scene happens and he saves Ellie,
00:13:11
Julian Contreras Jr
And then I did not know that it was going to turn the way it did in season two.
00:13:18
Kendahl
Yeah, I have to agree. And so I think this leads into the conversation you and I did have prior to the show. So um once again, like, you know, Julian and I, we...
00:13:31
Kendahl
we bounce ideas about, you know, what are we going to talk about? What's interesting? What's not interesting on the show. Sometimes we end up just doing these kinds you know, shows where we just jump in and say, hi, talk about a few things we've watched, but then sometimes we dig into some of our more nuanced elements of like our frustrations.
00:13:48
Kendahl
And this, this show kind of got us dug in, into a conversation about some frustrations that we feel are, i would even say play shows like Invincible.
00:14:01
Kendahl
In all honesty, I feel like it also plagues that.
00:14:01
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:14:03
Kendahl
And what I'm talking about is these... I feel like a lot of the new, like we'll call premium shows. Things that are not on your your typical air channels.
00:14:15
Kendahl
Things that are not on your typical, like even expanded cable channels. Things that are that are directly tied to one streaming service or one station that's that's a premium channel, like HBO or Showtime.
00:14:29
Kendahl
And... it's i feel like we went from this standard where we would have um a solid like well okay so on network television you would have these you know 20 to 24 episode seasons Now, some of those shows were very intuitive to their their consumers, right?
00:14:53
Kendahl
And you had things like Friends and um Seinfeld were just pumping out episodes like crazy. And it was they were all just about nothing, right? There wasn't like this story-driven element from episode to episode that drove the viewer into what was going on.
00:15:10
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, and I will say that's what is amazing about Seinfeld.
00:15:10
Kendahl
But...
00:15:12
Julian Contreras Jr
It's a show about nothing. Like, you can catch any episode not knowing any of the backstory of any of the characters and just dealing with what they're doing for that time, and you're fine.
00:15:22
Kendahl
Right. and And even if you jumped into a random episode where like you know the Soup soup Nazi doesn't you know isn't there but they talk about it, it's still relevant in the conversation it's still funny.
00:15:34
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:15:34
Kendahl
But... um but the The other thing is, though, then you have those network shows that are like lost, right? Or, um you know, even the gritty ones like, you know, the the Law and Order series or like yeah ER, even though those weren't like directly story driven from episode to episode, there was still this massive um element that that drove the viewer to come back every week.
00:16:00
Kendahl
Right. And there was some there was some underlining tone to the season that drove at least some micro story that, you know, you would follow. And I feel like, um you know, those still exist. Right. So like right now I'm finishing up. the I have literally two episodes left of the show. This is us.
00:16:19
Kendahl
And this is us. There's 18 to 20 episodes per episode. season There's six seasons. Each episode is 40 to 45 minutes long. Yeah.
00:16:30
Kendahl
Yeah. It's a good show. And it, it, it, it ingrains this idea of families and the, you know, the struggles are going through. You have this connection. You, you build these characters up.
00:16:42
Kendahl
But my question to you is, is like, um, when you start seeing shows like the last of us that are, I mean, like, okay, so I want you to kind of talk about what, you what you you know, the element of what we we we had discussed in the fact of...
00:16:56
Julian Contreras Jr
You just want to get me all riled up is what you want to do.
00:16:59
Kendahl
I know. Well, no, no, no, no. I want to... Because I'm usually the soapbox guy, but this is kind of a soapbox that we both want to stand on and shout to So, um and like, those episodes are different because it it's deceiving, right?
00:17:06
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. So what?
00:17:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, it's very, very deceiving. So you're waiting your entire week because it's only on one day a week and it's Sunday. All right. It's the way to close out your weekend before you start work. You're looking forward to it.
00:17:26
Julian Contreras Jr
It's on... It's slated for this time. It's going to be... Starts at, what? 7 o'clock, I think, is when you can first start to watch it.
00:17:34
Kendahl
Mm-mm. Mm-mm.
00:17:34
Julian Contreras Jr
Says it's an hour episode. So you're like, all right, cool. I got 60 minutes of good content here. What's it going to be? And then... ah Maybe episode one and two didn't do it as much, or maybe I just didn't start to notice.
00:17:50
Julian Contreras Jr
But...

Streaming Challenges & Writing Quality

00:17:52
Julian Contreras Jr
Once you start watching them, it's not an hour. It's no longer an hour at all. ah First, it starts with the the HBO commercial for another show.
00:18:03
Julian Contreras Jr
All right, that's three minutes.
00:18:03
Kendahl
Right. Yep.
00:18:05
Julian Contreras Jr
All right, check that off. You got the recrap of what happened last week's episode.
00:18:09
Kendahl
Yep. That's like two minutes.
00:18:10
Julian Contreras Jr
That's another five minutes.
00:18:11
Kendahl
so Yeah, two to five minutes. Yep, depending on the episode.
00:18:13
Julian Contreras Jr
And then if the episode starts right away, you have like two minutes of like, here's the show. And then it goes right to the intro with the song.
00:18:24
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:18:25
Julian Contreras Jr
You can skip that. That's true. But that is another four minutes. All right. And then you finally get to the show and then they're starting kind of slow and it goes up.
00:18:37
Julian Contreras Jr
You get good 23 to 28 minutes before it starts to feel like the end of the episode.
00:18:47
Julian Contreras Jr
You click the button and your scroller at the bottom still says you have 35 minutes.
00:18:52
Kendahl
Like 15 to 20 minutes on on on some of the bigger ones.
00:18:52
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:18:56
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:18:56
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, you're like, OK, cool. Well, it's not going to end here, is it? And then all a sudden, the credits roll.
00:19:02
Kendahl
Oh, yeah. I remember the one it had it said it was 22 minutes left. That's right. There was like 22 minutes left on the one episode. was like, 22 minutes.
00:19:08
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I'm like, OK, well, is it going to give me like something after the credits? So you start to watch after the credits. So you have your full set of credits. I keep saying credits a lot. I'm sorry. You're watching all those go by.
00:19:20
Julian Contreras Jr
That takes 8 to 10 minutes, depending on how many people worked on that episode. And then it goes right into how the episode was made.
00:19:30
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:19:31
Julian Contreras Jr
While behind the scenes are fun, don't include those in the episode runtime. ah I just don't feel like that's fair to the viewer.
00:19:41
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:19:41
Julian Contreras Jr
That's where it started to lose me. Like these episodes are nowhere near an hour. I may be getting 35 40 minutes of show here.
00:19:52
Kendahl
Yeah, I was say I so when I was looking at it, I after you and I had had this conversation, um i decided to go back and look and the average runtime between the episodes was roughly between 38 to 42 minutes, depending on the episode.
00:20:06
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, and you're slated for a full hour.
00:20:06
Kendahl
So, yep.
00:20:08
Julian Contreras Jr
And then you have, i don't know, i don't want to say the audacity, but you say that you're running out of time to get everything you want in the episode.
00:20:20
Julian Contreras Jr
No, you're not. No, you're not.
00:20:24
Kendahl
Yeah, yeah.
00:20:26
Julian Contreras Jr
There's that time in there. You are choosing not to do some of these things. And I know it sounds like I hate the show and I'm, I'm not there yet. I don't hate it. I still am okay with it.
00:20:37
Julian Contreras Jr
Despite making me look like an idiot and having me think that things aren't the way they go. And that you could find a single person in the dilapidated Seattle that's grown over with everything in it.
00:20:50
Julian Contreras Jr
And you could find one person just by knowing. No, that's no, no, no.
00:20:54
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:20:57
Julian Contreras Jr
But I don't know.
00:20:59
Kendahl
Well, i and I think this, so when we started talking about this, i said, you know, I have an opinion on this because, so I watched this, um, like, uh, this video essay, right? So was this guy that's a writer and, um, he was talking about the struggle that is the reality of streaming television today.
00:21:19
Kendahl
And one of the things that he brought up was that in the, the nuances that are these new shows, They are struggling to find the the proper writing staff because they're not paying them very much. and And then when they are paying them, they're like, hurry up and get it done.
00:21:39
Kendahl
And then at the same time, they're you know going back on fixing and reshoots and all this other stuff. But what I don't understand, and like he kind of you know talks about it, is that the the funny thing is, is that when these shows don't do that well, because these are the circumstances of which have been given, they then are like, you're gone. Now moving on to the next one.
00:22:01
Kendahl
and It's like, well, you can't.
00:22:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:22:03
Kendahl
That's not that's that's not their fault though. And what what doesn't make sense is that when you can have, you know, one of the so one of the the arguments goes to, oh, well, there's a lot of production that goes on behind the camera that takes away from the cost or the the the ability to pay these people more money or have, you know, stationed writers continuously working on these projects.
00:22:26
Kendahl
No, you can't. You can't say that because the production costs on some of these other shows like I mean, look back at like Breaking Bad. I mean, the production costs on some of those was massive.
00:22:38
Kendahl
And then you look at i mean, even This Is Us. This Is Us has an a special effects team that does like de-aging. ah like continuously through several episodes. There's a lot of have special effects that goes into a 40 minute episode, 45 minute episode, because they're spending the entire time back in the early eighties. And there's these characters, these people are the same age as Julian and I. Well, I'm telling you right now, we don't look the same as we did in the, in the eighties.
00:23:08
Kendahl
Right. And so when you, when you have to DH somebody by 20 to 30 years, right. you're it's It's massive. It's massive. and and And so you've got this... I think like you hit it on the head.
00:23:22
Kendahl
you're there They're making excuses for why the the shows aren't doing you know what we as viewers want. But I think it's different. I think i think the reality is, is ah in my opinion, for these shows, I think they think...
00:23:40
Kendahl
We're going to get bored too quickly because we just want to stream the show all at once. No, I don't care. Like, if you wanted to...
00:23:47
Julian Contreras Jr
I'm totally fine waiting for a good show per week. There are some shows we are going to get to that we did binge that we enjoyed, but they also did not fall into, okay, we're going to give you a full hour, but we're really not.
00:23:50
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:23:53
Kendahl
Yeah. Yeah.
00:24:04
Kendahl
Well, and and then at the same time, these again, they these were heavy story driven episodes that that kept you running to the next episode, right? They were intentionally designed like that.
00:24:13
Julian Contreras Jr
Right.
00:24:15
Kendahl
I mean, that's that's what Breaking Bad was. That's what Lost was. That's what, you know, so many of these these monumental shows that are in the top, you know, tier... I have to watch it. And you feel the need to binge them season after season.
00:24:30
Kendahl
Dude, I remember when, um I mean, even with Dexter, okay, like you and I have talked about Dexter a lot on this show.
00:24:37
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:24:37
Kendahl
And it's a show that I, to this day, can sit down and binge a couple of seasons over a weekend and feel fantastic about it.
00:24:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. If somebody hadn't seen Dexter and they wanted to jump in and they're like, okay, well, do you want to watch the show with me?
00:24:47
Kendahl
And
00:24:52
Julian Contreras Jr
i know you've seen it, but I haven't. i was like, yeah, of course it's Dexter. Yeah. I'll watch it.
00:24:57
Kendahl
Let's talk about it. ah
00:24:59
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:24:59
Kendahl
Right. But I mean, but that show did everything the same, built amazing characters, had a story driven that a drive line that was so crazy, interesting and writers that just stuck around and, and they,
00:25:12
Kendahl
They had good source material to start, but it wasn't even based off the source material. They would even move on beyond it. And I think the thing is, is that when you have when you have that right mix of steady, good writing with people that want to be involved and good acting all all along you can't you can't take away... like You could do eight episodes, right? i mean like We're going to talk about one here in a minute.
00:25:40
Kendahl
You could do six, eight, ten episodes and be phenomenal. like Absolutely.
00:25:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, exactly.
00:25:46
Kendahl
We've been there. We've talked about shows like that on this shit on this show. But when you have a show like this... i mean okay One, you know the girl that plays um Abby, right? so
00:25:56
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:25:57
Kendahl
The girl that plays Abby, she was originally slotted to play Ellie.
00:26:02
Kendahl
And the thing is, and here's the thing.
00:26:03
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:26:04
Kendahl
If you look at the video game and you put Abby side by side, they're the same dang person.
00:26:10
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay, yeah. I felt like this was a road that we were going to go down and I want to try to ah like avoid this one too much because I don't want to go into this show stinks because, i mean, all the memes are out there.
00:26:22
Kendahl
No, no, no. Yeah.
00:26:25
Julian Contreras Jr
They're all out there.
00:26:25
Kendahl
No.
00:26:25
Julian Contreras Jr
I'm not participating in any of that. I don't wish to hate on anyone. I'm just

Character Analysis: Bella Ramsey's Ellie

00:26:30
Julian Contreras Jr
talking about the source material.
00:26:30
Kendahl
no
00:26:31
Julian Contreras Jr
The acting is okay. Like, I know this girl from other shows. She is a great actress.
00:26:38
Kendahl
Yeah, exactly.
00:26:40
Julian Contreras Jr
And then if we wanted to have her as Ellie, that would have been a great choice. But we didn't do that. We chose Bella Ramsey. So let's stick with that. Season one. Good.
00:26:51
Julian Contreras Jr
Great. Fine. That's what we're doing. That's what she is. We're going into season two. We're sticking with it. But now all of a sudden we're fighting time because she doesn't look 12 anymore.
00:27:04
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:27:05
Julian Contreras Jr
She's 16 to 19 in those flashbacks.
00:27:09
Julian Contreras Jr
I don't want to participate in that. I'm just talking about like strictly the writing the the show
00:27:15
Kendahl
But even on even on the acting side, though, I think Bella Ramsey did a terrible job of presenting Ellie. like There was just no emotional factors that played into her acting.
00:27:27
Kendahl
That's what drove me nuts in this season. I felt like her her entire acting was phoned in. it was It was deadpan. it was it It just was not the same engaged... I don't know. I just i felt like there was a lot missing...
00:27:46
Kendahl
in this season from her when it came down to the emotional elements except for except for the last like episode and a half then all of a sudden it's like oh hi you're an actor okay good now let's play
00:27:59
Julian Contreras Jr
just Are you talking about the very last episode or the porch scene?
00:28:03
Kendahl
i'm talking about in like the half of the um the fifth episode where everything kind of went crazy and you you also got the glimpse of her and um um pedro pascal's like lead up into their problems like there there was the acting that i wanted like you saw the emotional turmoil and change and things that were going on i saw that but then you had this like deadpan person in at the end of the fifth and then into the sixth that was all through um that was all through the previous episodes and then at the very end of six all of a sudden there you go now you have this emotional person again that's back into the situation because of what was going on so i don't know um i'm just saying i feel like

Importance of Story-Driven Content

00:28:51
Kendahl
we
00:28:53
Kendahl
The thing I want to focus on is how I feel like a lot of these streaming elements and the streaming shows are fighting the same problem. And that is they're trying to push this content out by by not having consistent writing because you know we've talked about that, especially with Invincible.
00:29:11
Kendahl
um they they try to get the content out and it's like an all at once type situation. And they just want to be like, okay, now you can go binge it. But I'd rather wait.
00:29:21
Kendahl
I'd rather wait and have the you know the every week. But even Invincible came out on a weekly schedule. i But we know that they did it all at once. You know what i mean?
00:29:31
Julian Contreras Jr
Right, yeah.
00:29:32
Kendahl
So I don't know. um I just, I feel like there's, I feel like there's a part of our society today that's built in this idea that we don't if there's enough if there's enough you know nudity violence and swearing all of a sudden you can throw a bunch of money at it it it'll and it'll do okay I i don't know that's that's a ah harsh opinion to it but I feel like that kind of fills in it
00:29:57
Julian Contreras Jr
Well, no, that's fine. Cause you said it, those three elements alone, you put enough of that on a screen. Yeah. People are going to watch that.
00:30:05
Kendahl
right right
00:30:06
Julian Contreras Jr
It's going to do okay. Always. It's never going to like fail.
00:30:11
Kendahl
It's going to drive somebody to go say, oh, yeah, did you see that last night? Holy crap, I didn't even know she was going to do that. And then all of a sudden, they're like, what do you mean? Go watch it. I'll show you. Yeah.
00:30:20
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. But I mean, it's easy for us to talk about it. We're only on this show. We can only judge by what we see on our small screens. But the stuff that we're judging and seeing on the small screens is the stuff that you gave us.
00:30:34
Kendahl
Yeah. Yeah.
00:30:36
Julian Contreras Jr
That was your gift to us. And while I appreciate it, it's fine. I love entertainment. Sometimes... I don't know that there's some element in a, maybe if I was on that side of the fence, I would be on the same argument. Like, okay, we'll see. Well, here's what we have to deal with.
00:30:54
Julian Contreras Jr
We had this writer leave. We only had this amount of budget. These people make this amount of money. We have to stick to the game because if we don't, people are going to get mad. But then we'd go right back to Dexter.
00:31:06
Julian Contreras Jr
and I hate to use this as a, ah reference all the time, but Dexter book one did not end the same as Dexter season one. They went completely opposite ways and it was amazing. You could read the books and get a completely different story than there is on the television.
00:31:27
Kendahl
Well, but see, that's the thing, though, is that so we're talking about, you know, for we're using Last of Us as the starting jump point for this conversation. But the thing is, is that when you have good source material, you can have a good short miniseries or you can have a good...
00:31:43
Kendahl
set of episodes and I mean, and a show that we've talked about in the past, I think leads up to kind of another one that we were going to talk about, like apples never fall. Right. There's it comes from.
00:31:52
Julian Contreras Jr
Good show.
00:31:53
Kendahl
Yeah, it's a great source of the book. And that was a really fun like you got it story driven, character driven, like it just had a lot of really cool things that were built into that show that drove the viewer to be like, I want to watch the next episode.
00:32:10
Kendahl
And it it also came out as, I think if I remember right, it also came out on Peacock on a week-by-week basis until it was streamed. So, um but, you know, the thing is, I think it shows that when you have the right people and the right,
00:32:17
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:32:28
Kendahl
um um I guess, alignment of ideas and ideas, writing and production and directing and acting.
00:32:41
Kendahl
I think that's the bigger thing too. You can have a really good show. And one of those is one that we're going to talk about today. And

Review: The Perfect Couple

00:32:47
Kendahl
that, and that show is the perfect couple. And you and I, you, so you had written me and said, Hey, I'm putting some content in.
00:32:50
Julian Contreras Jr
Yep. Yeah.
00:32:56
Kendahl
I, you know, this is what I watched. And i was like, huh, I wonder what it's like. So I started it today.
00:33:03
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:33:04
Kendahl
ironically my kid woke me up really early it was like 6 o'clock in the morning and I couldn't go back to sleep and I'm like eh let's see what's going on on the streaming services and I saw a Perfect Couple and i was like oh you know what I'm going to watch this and I did and honestly it was and this is ah a perfect example of a show that only has 6 episodes they're what they're about 50 minutes long each right
00:33:20
Julian Contreras Jr
but
00:33:32
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, that I double-checked. The finale was an hour and six minutes.
00:33:36
Kendahl
Yeah. Yeah. Now...
00:33:39
Julian Contreras Jr
Maybe four minutes of credits at the end.
00:33:41
Kendahl
Yeah, yeah. And then every every episode starts with the the intro of the dance, but that's...
00:33:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay, so I do need to get to that. But first, going to ask you, for the listener's sake, are you recording in an aviary right now?
00:33:53
Kendahl
Oh, yeah no, I'm actually, that's funny. I'm, I'm, uh, no, I'm actually outside in, um, we'll say, I'll i'll put the camera so you can see.
00:34:06
Kendahl
Um, so you can see, it's just the, I have the woods right there.
00:34:06
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. Okay.
00:34:10
Kendahl
um and, oh, okay.
00:34:10
Julian Contreras Jr
Nice. Just in case they can hear the birds, I just want to ah want to have it mentioned that we talked about it.
00:34:13
Kendahl
Yeah. So I have, i have I have all my windows open because i don't want to run the AC. It's it's really loud. And I got a bunch of birds that are right here and I can hear them too.
00:34:27
Julian Contreras Jr
No, it's fine. It's very beautiful out there in the woods. But yes, I do want to get to the opening dance scene that this starts with. Does that dance scene remind you of any other show that we love that starts with the dance scene?
00:34:41
Kendahl
Oh, uh, well, a couple. Um, so, um, my crazy ex-girlfriend, i don't know if you've ever watched that, that one, it reminds me of that one.
00:34:49
Julian Contreras Jr
I got a few episodes in.
00:34:51
Kendahl
Okay. Um, and then why can't I think of his name? John Cena, the peacemaker.
00:34:56
Julian Contreras Jr
John Cena and the Peacemaker starts with the cringiest dance that you can't skip.
00:34:58
Kendahl
Thank you. Yeah. Right.
00:35:03
Julian Contreras Jr
It's so hilarious.
00:35:03
Kendahl
Yeah. Every time, every time.
00:35:06
Julian Contreras Jr
It says skip intro and I can't click the button to skip it.
00:35:08
Kendahl
i i don't I don't think I skipped it one time.
00:35:12
Julian Contreras Jr
No, and it's coming back. Season two is coming out with that one.
00:35:14
Kendahl
Yeah. Yeah.
00:35:15
Julian Contreras Jr
So we'll talk about that one soon. But... Yes, this this limited series is what it's called is, I would say, a 9 out of 10. I love this show.
00:35:28
Kendahl
I'm going to give it an 8. And I'll explain why in in a few minutes. But...
00:35:31
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay, that's fine. So I think it came out last year. It says it came out in 2024.
00:35:35
Kendahl
It did. It did. It was like towards the...
00:35:37
Julian Contreras Jr
And it's just been sitting there and I haven't watched it
00:35:39
Kendahl
Yeah, it was towards the end of last year. and But i I think, honestly, this is a show that... It's, I mean, it's a mystery. It's a thriller mystery.
00:35:50
Kendahl
By all accounts.
00:35:50
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:35:52
Kendahl
And I think it starts pretty heavily into the idea of like what it's going to be... um not Not right away, but... um you know Like I said, this is this is this is a show that really took off with the character development. like that's what you Every episode is just a character development.
00:36:11
Kendahl
And it kind of falls on the same line as apples never fall. You get a different view of different characters that are based in the show. ah Things that are going on. And it it does kind of a bounce back and forth between like before um the... So, I mean, I don't think it's too much to say. there's So there's somebody that does die in in this show.
00:36:34
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, because ah as episode one, I was going to say, let's let's be careful, but there is, it's a murder mystery.
00:36:34
Kendahl
And...
00:36:39
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:36:40
Julian Contreras Jr
So somebody does die. And they do a good job up until the end of the first episode of letting you know which one it was. Because it starts with her screaming for help, and you can see somewhat of a body, but you can't see who it is.
00:36:48
Kendahl
yeah
00:36:55
Julian Contreras Jr
And theyre it's all, it's introduced, what, and eight, nine characters right away?
00:36:59
Kendahl
Yeah, there's a lot.
00:37:00
Julian Contreras Jr
ah And you're like, well, which one which one isn't here now? And so we have to figure it out.
00:37:06
Kendahl
But it bounces back and forth quite a bit until you figure it out.
00:37:10
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, in that first episode.
00:37:10
Kendahl
Um...
00:37:11
Julian Contreras Jr
And then after that, it just builds and builds all these characters that are just working off of each other. a Let's get through some actors that are in this show real quick just to get people more intrigued.
00:37:22
Julian Contreras Jr
We got Nicole Kidman doing a Netflix series.
00:37:24
Kendahl
Yep. Yep.
00:37:26
Julian Contreras Jr
Leigh Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Billy Howell, Megan Faye. and It just goes on and on. One of the Fanning sisters.
00:37:36
Kendahl
Yeah, Dakota Fanning.
00:37:37
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:37:38
Kendahl
So, and okay, so, um you know, the ah her character is obnoxious.
00:37:49
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I mean, all their characters... I don't want to focus too much on all of them, but all of them have their attributes. Like if you were in a Mortal Kombat game and you were picking a character, each one of their attributes would be so much different.
00:37:58
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:38:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Like Thomas. Oh my gosh.
00:38:04
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:38:05
Julian Contreras Jr
Thomas is a freaking jackwad.
00:38:07
Kendahl
yeah like i I couldn't understand... Well, again, there's it's hard to it's hard to talk about the show without giving anything away, but um there's...
00:38:19
Kendahl
I couldn't understand his motive to always be... ah Very big Richard Just a bag of Richards so Yeah
00:38:27
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. And that's just who he was. That's how he lived. He was the oldest of the three brothers. And he obviously had issues with his dad.
00:38:40
Julian Contreras Jr
And it just spawns from there. And if he can't have something from his dad, he's going to go find it for somewhere else.
00:38:47
Kendahl
Yeah
00:38:47
Julian Contreras Jr
And that just leads him to just go around do what he does.
00:38:50
Kendahl
Well, and the thing is, so to so to kind of discuss the show without giving anything away, the whole premise of the show is that you have this family who is just... unholy rich and um father has ah bunch of money that he's holding aside for his kids and mom's a writer who's Nicole Kidman so Liam Shriver is the rich guy mom is this book writer they just they live in nu Nantucket in the most like ridiculously beautiful home
00:39:13
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:39:24
Kendahl
Everybody knows them as having just a ton of money. and um And so they just they do and get whatever they want. And every every episode digs a little deeper into the nuances of why they're all just terrible people.
00:39:41
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:39:41
Kendahl
and But at the same time, there's there's a couple of characters that the whole time you just you feel bad for you know having to be caught up in all the crazy that is the this family.
00:39:55
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:39:56
Kendahl
And i don't know. i I, liked, I liked how they presented a lot of things, but um one of the things that um this show does is like, you like you said, it kind of hides who is the you know murder mystery about right off the bat.
00:40:12
Kendahl
It, it very much makes you feel like you figured out the killer until you didn't.
00:40:18
Julian Contreras Jr
Until two minutes later when you're like, oh, OK, well.
00:40:22
Kendahl
I, Yeah. And um like, I just, though the one when I, won't give anything away when the one character is like, no, I can prove I didn't do it. Here's my phone. Here's my watch, by the way.
00:40:34
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:40:34
Kendahl
it's like, ah oh, but I was certain.
00:40:39
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:40:40
Kendahl
So, and, and then, and then the to find out who it is in the end, my question to you is without saying anything, at what point did you, did you recognize who it was?
00:40:53
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, just and not until they laid it out, because I did such a good job of writing all of these
00:40:57
Kendahl
Okay.
00:40:59
Julian Contreras Jr
ins and outs of everyone's character and quote-unquote motive which there wasn't really any until the very end it was just insane they gave you plenty of breadcrumbs for different motives and i mean even the shooter deval the son who wasn't really a son and
00:41:08
Kendahl
Yep.
00:41:17
Kendahl
Yeah. the The guy from India and yeah.
00:41:23
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. set Even his character that came in, you're like, oh yeah, he's just, he's the cool one. And then he's like, well, maybe he's not the cool one.
00:41:31
Kendahl
I know. I was like, oh, he's just a filler.
00:41:32
Julian Contreras Jr
I don't know. All
00:41:35
Kendahl
so all right. So that leads me into why I gave it an eight. I gave it an eight.
00:41:38
Julian Contreras Jr
right, go ahead.
00:41:39
Kendahl
And here's the only reason why. Because I found myself in a few times doing the like, boop, boop. putting it up to one and a half times. Cause I was like, I know exactly what's going on. I know exactly what they're going to say. I know exactly what's going to happen.
00:41:52
Kendahl
And I was just like, go, go, go. Cause I wanted to, I wanted to get to the meat and potatoes of the show. Right.
00:41:57
Julian Contreras Jr
but
00:41:58
Kendahl
And so there were a few times that I i did that. And i I feel like if a show, if a show is pushing you to speed up the the nuances in between,
00:42:11
Kendahl
they could have gotten rid of some of those things and still been just like, just as good. So, I mean, an eight is still ah good score.
00:42:19
Julian Contreras Jr
Yes, it's still way up there.
00:42:20
Kendahl
It's definitely worth the watch. Yeah. It's still a very good show. It's definitely worth the watch. And the mystery that gets solved at the end, I'm not saying it was like a mind blown, but it was like, ah, dang.
00:42:32
Kendahl
Okay. And the best, I think the best thing about this show is, is that you still have to put all the pieces together to figure out why that person did what they did.
00:42:47
Julian Contreras Jr
Mm-hmm.
00:42:48
Kendahl
it's not It's not laid out entirely. I mean, it's mostly laid out, but there are still details you're like, oh, Oh, that's why.
00:42:57
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:42:57
Kendahl
and so you still, as the viewer, if you are not paying attention, there are parts of that of of this murder mystery that are not directly spelled out. And you have to fill in the gaps. And I love that.
00:43:10
Kendahl
I love that.
00:43:11
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I love, for lack of better words, as you're drinking, I love to be teased a little bit.
00:43:19
Kendahl
Give me just a little tickle.
00:43:20
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, i was hoping for a little spit take there, but I did get one.
00:43:21
Kendahl
um
00:43:23
Kendahl
No. No. So, anyway, that's that's the perfect couple. I think it's a really good show, but this is exactly what we're talking about. This was show had six episodes. It's roughly, I think it's like right around an hour, almost an hour each episode.
00:43:37
Kendahl
it It draws you in. like guess I said, it had a couple of boop-boop moments, but it's like past that. Like, it just... I watched it all within a day, people. I started at 6.30ish in the morning, and I finished it in a day because i was that like I was doing my chores while I was keeping my phone around me, and I just was watching it and listening the whole time because it was just that good.
00:43:51
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:44:00
Kendahl
it was I mean, it's a good show.
00:44:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. ah I stumbled across this one because I was watching one of the newer Netflix shows that I want to get into. Kendall hasn't watched this one yet, but I was watching that new show Sirens that came out.
00:44:15
Julian Contreras Jr
It's got Julianne Moore, Millie Alcock, and again, Megan Faye, who I didn't know was in both shows, to be honest.
00:44:21
Kendahl
Yep.
00:44:23
Julian Contreras Jr
I didn't know that.
00:44:24
Kendahl
Yeah. Well, and that's the funny thing. So like, yeah. So Megan Faye ends up playing the best friend of the the girl that's getting married in The Perfect Couple.
00:44:35
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, and then she's also the sister of Millie in this one. And I like this one until I watch The Perfect Couple.
00:44:45
Kendahl
ha
00:44:45
Julian Contreras Jr
I thought Sirens was pretty good. it did lull out towards like season or not season, but episode three-ish. And I was I don't like, is this, is there going to be paranormal stuff? Is, does somebody have powers? Is there nothing?
00:45:00
Julian Contreras Jr
What's it going to be? And you had to wait till the very end to figure it out. Honestly, I, I give Sirens a six.
00:45:09
Kendahl
Okay.
00:45:10
Julian Contreras Jr
It was higher up until I saw the perfect couple. likes This is how a show should be.
00:45:15
Kendahl
Okay, right.
00:45:15
Julian Contreras Jr
I'm interested.
00:45:15
Kendahl
Yeah. Yeah.
00:45:16
Julian Contreras Jr
gives me just enough of the popcorn moments to where I'm like, Oh, what's, what's happening over there. And then, yeah, there are some lowly parts where I pulled up clash of clans on my iPad and I played a few rounds, but I didn't ever fast forward.
00:45:29
Kendahl
yeah yeah
00:45:31
Julian Contreras Jr
So that's why I'm sticking with a nine on purple cup. Perfect couple. I'm giving a six to sirens. It's only five episodes.
00:45:40
Kendahl
ah okay
00:45:42
Julian Contreras Jr
But both of these shows have in common besides Megan Faye, neither one of them at the beginning credits, like in the dance scene, tell you who's in this show.
00:45:54
Julian Contreras Jr
Sirens just brings up like these statues of sirens. in old greek stone carvings and and it just goes from there so i thought that was a choice was like okay we're just not gonna show anybody who's in this kind of weird choice but i'm in it
00:46:13
Kendahl
Yeah. um And in all reality, I mean, everybody's got an access to a phone. I mean, everybody can get on IMDB these days. Like you can figure out pretty quick quick who's playing who and when, right?
00:46:25
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah exactly so we're
00:46:26
Kendahl
So, but I mean, I, I do, I, I get the idea of these actors, especially, you know, someone likes it's newer. They see their, their name up on the board or their name pop on the screen. I totally get that. I, you know, not, I don't feel like that should be taken away from them, but I'm just saying, I don't think it's as pertinent as it used to be to be like, oh this person's in there.
00:46:47
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.

Review: Sirens & Brave New World

00:46:48
Julian Contreras Jr
who's What's the big title name on this one? Who's got billing? Top billing?
00:46:52
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:46:54
Julian Contreras Jr
but
00:46:54
Kendahl
Hmm.
00:46:54
Julian Contreras Jr
So the next one we're going to start is The Better Sister on Prime.
00:46:59
Kendahl
Oh my gosh, I just started watching that.
00:47:01
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. Don't say anything. We'll save that one for next time because I need to start that one.
00:47:03
Kendahl
Okay.
00:47:05
Julian Contreras Jr
I did that one on the solo episode that we were going to start. Haven't yet, but we're going to.
00:47:08
Kendahl
Yep. Yep, I just started that one today.
00:47:13
Julian Contreras Jr
So. Go ahead.
00:47:14
Kendahl
So I gotta ask, have you watched, ah so I know both of us did not go to theaters to see this one, the Captain America,
00:47:16
Julian Contreras Jr
go ahead
00:47:23
Kendahl
um the the new Captain, my brain, yeah.
00:47:25
Julian Contreras Jr
The Red Hulk one? ah No, I did not see it.
00:47:28
Kendahl
brave Brave New World.
00:47:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Go ahead.
00:47:30
Kendahl
So did you did you watch that? Alright.
00:47:32
Julian Contreras Jr
No, I did not.
00:47:34
Kendahl
So you guys know I'm a big Marvel fan. And i i i watched I've watched every Marvel film that ever comes out. yeah you know to I'm a sucker for punishment and I will always take it and I get it.
00:47:46
Kendahl
But I'm going to tell you right now. If you didn't see this because it got bad rap in the theaters and then it went pretty quick to the streaming services... and Don't be so hesitant to watch it.
00:47:58
Kendahl
It's actually not that bad. I actually enjoyed this one. Even my wife, who is not a big Marvel fan as at like on the level that i am. she is not a She typically doesn't get into the the Marvel Universe the way that I do.
00:48:11
Kendahl
i ah She found it interesting. And she actually enjoyed the movie. So this is one of those I would say go watch it.
00:48:23
Kendahl
um I feel like I feel like the previews took away the reveal of the red Hulk. Um, because at no point does it lead up to knowing that the red Hulk is in the movie until it happens.
00:48:38
Kendahl
Like you would not know it was coming until it happens. So I feel like it would have been better if they had left that out of the previews and the trailers, because it it was too clearly understanding that that is,
00:48:54
Kendahl
um going to be the, the, the guy that, um, man, my brain just froze. Um, the, um, Harrison Ford's character that he plays the president, right?
00:49:04
Julian Contreras Jr
Mm-hmm.
00:49:09
Kendahl
So, um, well, he plays, he plays the president that, uh, that was, um, uh, Thaddeus Ross and Thaddeus Ross is obviously from the previous, if you guys remember the Marvel universe, um, is this actually even brings back, um,
00:49:26
Kendahl
ah what's her name from all the way back the from the Incredible Hulk, Liv Tyler, she plays Betty Ross, who was you know the the love interest of um Edward Norton's character back then.
00:49:42
Kendahl
And so...
00:49:42
Julian Contreras Jr
Bruce Banner. Yeah, you're welcome.
00:49:43
Kendahl
Bruce Banner, thank you. So, like, yeah, it does a good job of calling back to the old Hulk movies.
00:49:45
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:49:52
Kendahl
It does a good job of being pretty good on the storyline, keeps the action in line. it's There's a few times it's like, okay, are we getting somewhere? Because this is really getting boring.
00:50:03
Kendahl
But... I feel like it definitely is nowhere on the line of the Marvels, which was terrible. It's definitely nowhere on the line of um like the, what was the wannabe Spider-Man movie?
00:50:18
Julian Contreras Jr
Madam Web.
00:50:19
Kendahl
Madam Web, thank you. So no it's nowhere on the on the trash level.
00:50:23
Julian Contreras Jr
Wannabe Spider-Man movie.
00:50:25
Kendahl
There was nothing on the trash that is those movies, right? like Those were terrible Marvel marvel movies. Then you have Morbius, which was even worse. you know just you know these Those movies failed at bringing Marvel characters that people loved to the limelight.
00:50:38
Julian Contreras Jr
What about Kraven the Hunter? Did you watch that one yet?
00:50:40
Kendahl
I absolutely not. No.
00:50:42
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:50:43
Kendahl
No.
00:50:43
Julian Contreras Jr
Absolutely not.
00:50:44
Kendahl
so
00:50:44
Julian Contreras Jr
All right.
00:50:44
Kendahl
um But the thing is... this movie is a fun movie and I feel like it drives enough of, especially if you go to DC Thunderbolts, right?
00:50:56
Kendahl
There's, there's a coordination between these two shows or these two movies. And I think to tie those two movies together is important. And I think they did a good job of that.
00:51:06
Kendahl
And so I think if you liked Thunderbolts and you liked seeing Bucky and you liked seeing all the characters come back into that one and you want to know the tie to what's going on inside of um the Marvel Universe, go watch Brave New World just knowing it's not Captain America as it was before, you know but it's definitely still good.
00:51:25
Kendahl
I definitely recommend it.
00:51:27
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay, and I do have to ask you a question, not to jump on the ah Disney's paying us wagon, because we're not.
00:51:30
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:51:35
Kendahl
No, no.
00:51:37
Julian Contreras Jr
Are you going to go see How to Train Your Dragon?
00:51:40
Kendahl
ah Okay, so I tried to get tickets this last weekend and then seating.
00:51:45
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, it was pretty sold out here.
00:51:45
Kendahl
The only seats they had was like, yeah, well, they were like in the neck break section where you're like having to stretch your neck to look up at the screen. it's a man I

Family Plans & Summer Blockbusters

00:51:53
Kendahl
didn't want to do that. um And so i think I think we're going to try to go see it next week.
00:52:00
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:52:01
Kendahl
So, yeah, we just this weekend I'm i'm taking my mother in law is coming out here to come spend some time with us. So we're going to take her and do some stuff that I don't know. We'll get it to this weekend. But next weekend, um that's we are intended to try to go and see that with the family.
00:52:15
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. Awesome. I got to get to the theater. I'm, I'm jonesing for a theater moment.
00:52:21
Kendahl
There's a lot of good stuff coming up. Honestly, there's a lot of good stuff coming up. Um, and so I think that's the thing is like my, we've, we had stopped our monthly movie pass, um, for the last few months. Cause it really wasn't enough to say, I'm going to go more than once in the month and it just wasn't worth it. So, uh, we stopped it a couple of months back.
00:52:42
Kendahl
Um, I think in April, um, yeah, no, in March we stopped it. So we didn't have it for April, May or, or, um, or June. And so we're going to start it again in July, just so that we can kind of get back to the the groove of watching some of the movies that are coming out. Cause there's a lot of really good stuff coming up over the next couple of months.
00:53:01
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. And I do love summer sports. I do love being out, doing all that stuff, but I also love going to the theater. So I need to make time after all this to get back to the, not the norm, because the norm should be enjoying life outside, but it is

Closing Thoughts: Finding Joy in Entertainment

00:53:17
Kendahl
Well, it's the reason why they call it the blockbuster season, right? Because this is this is summer blockbuster.
00:53:17
Julian Contreras Jr
what it is.
00:53:19
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:53:20
Kendahl
This is when all the the the you know the big guns start coming out for for theaters. and And so that's why a lot of times movies get either pushed back or or changed around to accommodate this time frame.
00:53:34
Kendahl
Because if they know they're not going to compete with big box office ones like the Avengers when that came out, you're just you're just hanging tight until another lull in the season comes around.
00:53:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:53:47
Kendahl
so um
00:53:47
Julian Contreras Jr
All right. Well, it was definitely glad to have you back. I'm so glad you watched the perfect couple. we got to have a good chat about that. We touched on the last of us and how we feel that show is okay. That's I'll go with.
00:54:02
Kendahl
it has It has room to grow.
00:54:05
Julian Contreras Jr
Right.
00:54:06
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:54:07
Julian Contreras Jr
Uh, so Kendall, we'll be back for at least one. We'll go try for two more episodes. Any word words of wisdom on the way out?
00:54:14
Kendahl
yeah
00:54:17
Kendahl
um You know, i think um one of the things that I've said in the past, and I'll say it again, and know there's a lot of people out there that we don't talk about politics in this show, but I know that you know a lot of people see the things that are going around the world.
00:54:28
Julian Contreras Jr
Nope.
00:54:31
Kendahl
Just remember, if you try to find the negative in life, you're always going to find it. There's just no way to get around that. But if um you can have the opportunity to stop, find the joy Find the joy in what you do. Find the joy in who you're with. Find the joy in what's around you.
00:54:49
Kendahl
what's around you you're going to see a lot more opportunity to enjoy the things that, you know, maybe you might miss if you were just always trying to focus on the negative. So love those that are around you, regardless of who they are friend, family, foe, just love them.
00:55:07
Kendahl
Be a part of their life because that's, what's important. And gosh, dang it. Turn on a good movie, TV show, video game, whatever fancies your, you know, tickle moment, whatever.
00:55:17
Julian Contreras Jr
What?
00:55:17
Kendahl
Do it. Do it. Every once in a while, I still throw on a video game and it makes me happy. Or, you know, wake up at six o'clock in the morning because your kid drives you nuts and and, you know, I'm supposed to be sleeping in because of summer.
00:55:31
Kendahl
Turn on a good show. Binge something that you didn't expect. Find a way to laugh, smile, and just, you know, look for the joy in this world because there's a lot more of it than the negative.
00:55:44
Kendahl
The negative just tends to get more attention. That's all.
00:55:47
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. All right. Until next time, i want you to draw me like one of your French girls.
00:55:53
Kendahl
Oh, geez. Just remember, turn on something. Good.
