Transcript

Introduction and Episode Overview

00:00:35
Julian Contreras Jr
Welcome in ladies and gentlemen, this is episode 73 of my favorite podcast shut off turn on I am one of your hosts Julian the other host is at a movie right now that I didn't get to warn him about but he'll have to find out later we'll get into those reviews in just a second As promised with a quick turnaround, I do have my friend here that has some expertise and she will be here just shortly. I'm going to do two quick reviews so you can get out there this weekend and see these movies.

Movie Reviews: 'Now You See Me, Now You Don't' & 'The Running Man'

00:01:09
Julian Contreras Jr
First one, Now You See Me, Now You Don't. I got to go with the five. It was not great. The pacing was off. There's almost too many characters at this point.
00:01:23
Julian Contreras Jr
so I didn't like it. I think it's definitely third in line of that trilogy. So if you're going out this weekend and you want to see a PG-13 movie, it's good, but I think you're going to leave the theater wanting, honestly.
00:01:38
Julian Contreras Jr
The next one I saw, I just saw this morning, and it's the new Glenn Powell movie. We've been talking about it for a while. It's The Running Man. This one i loved.
00:01:50
Julian Contreras Jr
I saw it in D-Box. So I was riding a roller coaster the entire time I was watching this movie. Giving it a seven and a half, almost an eight. It was a little bit long in the runtime, but it was absolutely so much fun.
00:02:05
Julian Contreras Jr
And for all of you people that know that it's a Stephen King book, they do switch the movie into Derry, Maine, which as we all know,
00:02:17
Julian Contreras Jr
is the home of Pennywise the Clown. And there wasn't a clown per se, but there was a maniacal laugh that you'll have to just tune in to see. But I like that one.
00:02:28
Julian Contreras Jr
If you have to make a choice after this episode, I would definitely go with The Running Man.

Interview Preparation and Guest Introduction

00:02:34
Julian Contreras Jr
Now that those are out of the way, I'm going to admit I'm a little bit nervous because I haven't interviewed anybody that's not related to me. So without my brother or sister or Kendall here, I'm going to try to be as professional as I can and as fun as I can. I'm going to bring in my friend Cass that has expertise in the industry that we love so much to talk about on this show, which is movies and entertainment.
00:03:02
Julian Contreras Jr
So I'm going to bring her in here. How you doing, Cass?
00:03:05
Cass
Hello, hello. Good. How are you, Julian?
00:03:08
Julian Contreras Jr
Good. Thank you so much for being here and doing this. I know I kind of put you on the spot when I asked you, but I'm glad you said yes.
00:03:17
Cass
I'm glad to be here.
00:03:20
Julian Contreras Jr
All right. Cass and i we work together and an undisclosed location. It's top secret. But you have this other side hustle that I found out about.
00:03:32
Julian Contreras Jr
You said you told me about it, but then I must have forgotten until you said something. And then I was like, wait, what?
00:03:41
Julian Contreras Jr
So it's super cool that you have this and that you've agreed to be on

Cass's Makeup Industry Journey

00:03:44
Julian Contreras Jr
here. i have some questions for you. I mean, let's just get into it, if you don't mind. Like, how did you get started in the makeup world?
00:03:57
Cass
So of just started off small. I was just doing makeup and hair like on my aunts and my uncles. Like I would cut my uncle's hair or like any quinceaneras or something.
00:04:10
Cass
I'd be the one doing everyone's makeup. And then I just decided to go to hair school. not planning anything, just kind of like maybe going to a salon or something.
00:04:21
Cass
And then when my sister's mother-in-law, she has worked on set forever.
00:04:21
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:04:28
Cass
I didn't know that, but she invited us to a big time Rush concert the same day that I was graduating from there. And she found out when we were talking that I was graduating hair school.
00:04:40
Cass
And then after that, couple days later, she was like, Hey, I have this show I'm working on. you want to come work on this with me? And then i said, yeah. And it was Fallout.
00:04:51
Cass
And that was freaking awesome. And then from there, she just kept inviting me from, she kept inviting me to new, to different sets.
00:04:53
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:05:00
Cass
And I've just been learning from her a whole bunch.
00:05:03
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.

On-set Stories and Industry Insights

00:05:03
Julian Contreras Jr
That is super awesome. And that is that story you told me that you had worked on Fallout. And because we were talking about that show and you were like, yeah, I worked on there. And I thought you were kidding. I honestly did.
00:05:14
Cass
yeah
00:05:14
Julian Contreras Jr
But I totally believe you now. what Do you have a favorite story from either that set or another one?
00:05:25
Cass
that one was pretty cool because it was on an Air Force base, like an old Air Force base Wendover. And so it was a random day on set and they were like, oh, Elon Musk is here.
00:05:41
Cass
And he straight up just flew his private jet to the air to the airport or whatever that's right there on base. He just landed on set and then he was just walking around set with his kid ex and everyone was just trying to look but we weren't trying to make it obvious that we were looking.
00:05:48
Julian Contreras Jr
OK.
00:05:58
Cass
That was pretty cool.
00:05:59
Julian Contreras Jr
that
00:06:00
Cass
That was funny.
00:06:00
Julian Contreras Jr
That's awesome.
00:06:00
Cass
Yeah.
00:06:02
Julian Contreras Jr
So you've rubbed some elbows with some pretty famous people on there.
00:06:06
Cass
yeah
00:06:08
Julian Contreras Jr
Nice.
00:06:08
Cass
Jonathan Nolan directed that one.
00:06:08
Julian Contreras Jr
thats
00:06:10
Cass
Getting to see him work was cool.
00:06:13
Julian Contreras Jr
Right. Cool. So we've joked about this a little bit and I have to know, i think I've asked maybe a little bit, but why is it called swinger?
00:06:24
Cass
So, basically just the hair and makeup swing. So I just... My job is to take care of hair and makeup on set or just be the extra hand like an assistant.
00:06:38
Cass
Usually they call it assistant, but they decided to go with Swinger this time.
00:06:43
Julian Contreras Jr
It's a pretty hilarious name. It gets some of our other friends laughing like they don't know what's going on.
00:06:49
Julian Contreras Jr
So what is your absolute favorite part of the job? Is it meeting the famous people? Is it getting your work on camera so we can see it on our televisions or movie screens?
00:06:59
Cass
Yeah, getting to see my work on the camera and getting to tell like my family and my friends, like, look, I got to work on there. I was standing right behind that person or that camera or whatever.
00:07:12
Cass
That one was pretty cool, getting to see who I got to work on and my work on screen.

Cass's Favorite Films and Inspirations

00:07:17
Cass
put
00:07:18
Julian Contreras Jr
Nice. That is very cool. I would, that would be cool to sit down and watch like an episode that you worked on mainly and to see like which part you did. So I think that's pretty cool.
00:07:30
Julian Contreras Jr
Do you have a favorite project or movie that you worked on?
00:07:36
Julian Contreras Jr
Was it Fallout?
00:07:37
Cass
i think it was fallout
00:07:37
Julian Contreras Jr
It's kind of a... Okay. That was kind of a double question. That's my bad. It's my interview skills lacking.
00:07:42
Cass
no you did
00:07:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Do you have a favorite movie that you'd like to work on? Like, do you like to make people pretty with their hair? Or can you do the practical effects like in, like let's say, a terrifier where everything's gross and bloody? Yeah.
00:08:01
Cass
So I like doing natural makeup. That's what I like doing. But I 100% want to get into like doing blood and the gory stuff or working on like a sci-fi or end of the world type of film.
00:08:17
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:08:17
Cass
And that would be sick.
00:08:20
Julian Contreras Jr
That does sound like a lot of fun. And I think it would be a lot more fun just coming up with goops and having it look the way it does on our screen. Because it's, you watch those movies in theater and there are people that wince.
00:08:32
Julian Contreras Jr
Like it is gross.
00:08:34
Julian Contreras Jr
All right. Let's get down the list here. do you have favorite movie just that you like to watch?
00:08:44
Cass
I think Shutter Island is pretty good and Hunger Games. Those are like my two faves.
00:08:52
Julian Contreras Jr
right I like both of those. Do you have a favorite part of the Hunger Games? Is it one? Because think that might be one of my favorites.
00:09:00
Cass
Yeah, the first one. The first one is
00:09:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:09:03
Cass
oh ge
00:09:05
Julian Contreras Jr
Perfect. Let's see. What else do I have for you? I want to have a nice little natural conversation, but I also want to some of these questions like...
00:09:16
Julian Contreras Jr
Do you have a favorite makeup character that you've seen or enjoy somebody else's work that you've seen on screen?
00:09:26
Cass
I want to say Effie Trinket. Her character, her makeup, her hair, her wardrobe, everything was pretty, was pretty good on the screen.
00:09:41
Julian Contreras Jr
Very nice. Let's see. What else?
00:09:47
Julian Contreras Jr
I don't

Working Conditions and Challenges in Film

00:09:47
Julian Contreras Jr
really have any more questions. I think we just shotgun blasted through them. I just trying to keep my cool and composure.
00:09:55
Cass
Me too.
00:09:58
Julian Contreras Jr
So recently you've gone up to a Canyon site and you were working on another movie. And it was nice and cold for you then.
00:10:09
Julian Contreras Jr
Does that change anything on how you prep and prepare?
00:10:13
Cass
Yeah, you have to bundle up so much. You have to take a whole bunch of extra hand warmers or you have to take extra layers just in case. It either gets colder, if it gets hotter, you never know.
00:10:29
Cass
Horizon, i got to work on Horizon part one That one was the same thing. We were working in the mountains and you had to make sure you had everything prepared and ready to make sure that you were good and warm.
00:10:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. And so that's the Kevin Costner movie, right?
00:10:47
Cass
Yeah.
00:10:48
Julian Contreras Jr
All right. And that's like almost three or four hours, right? It's pretty long.
00:10:52
Cass
It's long, yeah.
00:10:53
Julian Contreras Jr
So I can imagine like days on set, you if you're doing the makeup first thing in the morning, let's say, how long do you have to be there for like touch-ups? Are you there all day?
00:11:05
Cass
Yeah, so we start off getting everyone ready. Let's say we have a call time at like 5 in the morning. shoot call is when they're ready to shoot the scene. So if it's at 5 in the morning, we have to make sure we have enough time.
00:11:22
Cass
So our calls will probably be like 3.40 or 4 a.m. to make sure that everyone's ready for that shoot call.
00:11:31
Julian Contreras Jr
Wow, that's pretty crazy. And then you just have to stay on hand in case anybody needs touched up, so you're just standing behind cameras just waiting all day.
00:11:40
Cass
Yeah, so usually I'm an assistant, so I'll be the first one to get sent up into to get set up on set with the characters that are up there.
00:11:52
Cass
So I'll just be standing behind, and when they call last looks, that's when I run in, make sure that they look good, see if I have to touch anything up, and then just run out as fast as I can before they start shooting, or they'll yell at you if you're taking too long.
00:12:05
Julian Contreras Jr
All right, because they they got to go action,

Freelance Life and Work-Life Balance

00:12:09
Julian Contreras Jr
right? They keep losing sunlight, especially in those Westerns.
00:12:10
Cass
Yeah.
00:12:14
Julian Contreras Jr
All right, so what is the next step? Like, you don't want to work with me forever, right? Because I've been there a long time. Is there a step that you're working towards so you can do this full time and be maybe moved to an LA or work with a studio full time? I don't know how that works. Does, do studios hire you on or is it all freelance?
00:12:37
Cass
It's all freelance mostly. Usually they try to stick with people in the area that they're shooting, in the same state that they're shooting. Because then like the taxes and stuff, it gets all difficult.
00:12:50
Cass
But I think I would want to just stay doing this whenever i get a chance. Just because it's so demanding, like Like it takes up your whole life. Like they're working Monday to Friday all day and then they don't have time for anything when they get home.
00:13:11
Cass
They're exhausted. So it's really demanding. And I feel like I wouldn't be able to do that full time. Yeah, it'll be hard.
00:13:19
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, that does sound because if you've got a 5 o'clock shoot, that's when you have to be there. You've got to get your stuff ready, so you're probably up at 3 to get that ready. that's It does sound like a lot, but it sounds like a fun world to work in.
00:13:29
Cass
Yeah.
00:13:32
Cass
Yes, yeah, it's really fun but demanding.
00:13:37
Julian Contreras Jr
I think the only thing I've actually done on camera is like be in a stadium where they were filming something and they just told us to cheer or boo or do the wave real

Conclusion and Future Episodes

00:13:47
Julian Contreras Jr
fast.
00:13:47
Julian Contreras Jr
And I don't even know if that movie made it out somewhere, but that's about all I've done. So that's why I'm just so fascinated with your second career here.
00:13:53
Cass
Well,
00:14:02
Julian Contreras Jr
But I don't want to take up too much of your time. it was so awesome of you to be here. It is going to be a shorter episode today. So Cass, thank you so much for being on here. I don't want to put too much more pressure on you.
00:14:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Maybe if you come up with that bigger project and you can come back anytime, you're totally welcome. I'm sure Kendall would like to talk to you as well, but he's in a movie right now that I didn't warn him about. So that's on him.
00:14:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. So thank you so much for being here. I'm going to wrap up the episode real quick and I can't say thank you enough, honestly.
00:14:39
Cass
Yeah, thank you for having me, Julian. Don't really get to talk about this stuff, so it's cool.
00:14:45
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, if I was a better interviewer, we could totally talk more, but I gotta to get no so got to get those skills in there.
00:14:50
Cass
You did amazing.
00:14:53
Julian Contreras Jr
So ladies and gentlemen, that was my friend Cass. And we will be back next week. We'll talk about some more movies that are coming out. Obviously, we're going to talk about the new Derry show that comes out Sunday, episode four. Stay tuned for that. I think Pennywise is actually going to make his debut.
00:15:11
Julian Contreras Jr
But until next time, Richards lives. And don't forget to turn on something good.
00:15:34
Cass
Mm-hmm.
