The boys are back and talking in depth about people walking. We discuss the book "The Long Walk" and how we are excited for the movie to come out. We also talk about "Novocaine" that is streaming on Paramount+. Julian gives a very passionate review on "28 Years Later". Of course we couldn't go without talking about season 3 of "Squid Game".

Opening & Introduction

00:00:38
Kendahl
All righty then. i am so glad that you guys are all here. Wherever you are listening, whenever you are listening, I appreciate you being here. yeah This is Kendall over on the East Coast and I've got Julian over there on the West Coast.
00:00:55
Julian Contreras Jr
Yep, and i thought you were going to be Ace Ventura there for a second this whole episode. I was in for that.
00:00:59
Kendahl
I was thinking about it. I had it for just half a second. we You know what's so funny is my kids the other day, I said something. ah I said something of ah the nature and then of like something Ace Ventura like and then I said, righty then.
00:01:14
Kendahl
And my wife just starts laughing. And my kids look at me going, Okay, what? was like, No, from the movie.
00:01:22
Julian Contreras Jr
They don't know.
00:01:24
Kendahl
And they're like, I don't get it. ah I failed as a father.
00:01:30
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, yeah, you did.
00:01:30
Kendahl
i know we've watched it, but I think they've forgotten it. So

Parenting & Movie Obligations

00:01:34
Julian Contreras Jr
That's okay.
00:01:34
Kendahl
I know, I now I'm required to make them watch it again.
00:01:38
Kendahl
it's It's a legal thing. It's a legal thing.
00:01:40
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, you're legally bound to do this.
00:01:44
Kendahl
Right? There are a few things that are required as a parent, at least in in what you know you and I enjoy. One, they are required to watch back to the future. That's just, I'm sorry. it's I can't get past that. It's not my obligation.
00:01:58
Kendahl
I mean, it's not my thing that I've done. it's just my obligation as a parent. I have to show that to them.
00:02:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Well, it's darn near perfect trilogy, so.
00:02:02
Kendahl
So, yeah. Right. So did you okay? So sorry, we're like going right into this as an opposite tangent. Have you seen the um The lore of how Doc went into the future and went into the Thor universe and was on whole planet
00:02:25
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, yeah, you talked about this one, Mandalorian.
00:02:28
Kendahl
Yeah, okay, okay, oh, that's right.
00:02:28
Julian Contreras Jr
and Yeah.
00:02:30
Kendahl
I just about this before. Okay. Anyway, we talked about too much stuff around here anyway
00:02:33
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Okay.

Weather & Humorous Conversations

00:02:36
Kendahl
Well, ah how have you been? Has it been hot over there?
00:02:40
Julian Contreras Jr
It's been mildly hot. Yeah. um I think I'm starting to get used to it.
00:02:46
Kendahl
we um Out here we have three levels of hot. it's it's that The first one is... um'm gonna I'll edit myself graciously for the show.
00:02:55
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:02:55
Kendahl
First one is is level one, Swamp Butt. And then it just goes up from there.
00:02:59
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. Some SWAS.
00:03:01
Kendahl
Oh, geez, it's full swass.
00:03:03
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay, you can say SWAS.
00:03:03
Kendahl
It's terrible. Okay, we'll say swass. We'll say swass. There's level one, two, and three of swass. <unk>e So i had I had the chance to help somebody today. It's level three swass today.
00:03:16
Kendahl
It's hot.
00:03:16
Julian Contreras Jr
It's
00:03:17
Kendahl
It's It's hot.
00:03:19
Julian Contreras Jr
DEFCON 3 down there.
00:03:22
Julian Contreras Jr
See, I don't think I can put up with humidity.
00:03:22
Kendahl
but
00:03:24
Julian Contreras Jr
i Here's the age-old question. Would you prefer to be hot? Or would you prefer to be cold? I'm a very cold-hearted soul.
00:03:32
Kendahl
um' um'm ah
00:03:33
Julian Contreras Jr
i need it freezing.
00:03:34
Kendahl
yeahp I'm a cold person. Yep. Yep.
00:03:37
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I don't
00:03:38
Kendahl
I'd rather be cold because then I can throw a blanket on. I'm sorry, but you can only take off so much before you've taken everything off and it's still swass. ah
00:03:47
Julian Contreras Jr
It's, yeah. I don't like humidity at all. When I go on vacation to places where it's going to be humid, I understand and I try to prepare, but there's there's really no preparing for humidity.
00:03:58
Julian Contreras Jr
You can't do anything.
00:03:58
Kendahl
No, there isn't. I think it's like 98% humidity today. um Give me half a sec.
00:04:04
Julian Contreras Jr
I know that we're talking about weather.
00:04:05
Kendahl
I'll tell you.
00:04:07
Julian Contreras Jr
Jeez.
00:04:08
Kendahl
No, we're old men. We talk about weather all the time. It's fine.
00:04:10
Julian Contreras Jr
We go there pretty often.
00:04:11
Kendahl
It was 99% humidity to start the day. It says it's like 70 now, but geez, it feels so much worse that.

Time Post-Baseball Season

00:04:18
Kendahl
Anyway, so other than other than the the weather, how you been?
00:04:18
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. So.
00:04:22
Julian Contreras Jr
Been good. Baseball ended. So I have a little bit more time to get out there and do some stuff. I played some disc golf. Finally. Yesterday I went out for 18 holes.
00:04:29
Kendahl
Nice. Fun.
00:04:31
Julian Contreras Jr
and then saturday we cleaned the pantry i showed you pictures of that project insane how much stuff that you can pack into a pantry and i know this is first world problems uh but you know you get in that pantry and there's just stuff shoved in the back that's like two three years old you're like i have no idea when i bought this how did this even get in here
00:04:37
Kendahl
Yeah, yeah.
00:04:56
Kendahl
When did this mandarin and sauce get there?
00:04:58
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, and you talked about it. We have plenty of water bottles.
00:05:03
Kendahl
Oh, yeah.
00:05:05
Julian Contreras Jr
I just feel like like I'll get a water bottle.
00:05:06
Kendahl
We have a... I say that, but I have a 12 by 12 bin. i have a 12 by 12 by like 12. Like I have one of those like water bottles.
00:05:13
Julian Contreras Jr
Did you say a bin?
00:05:15
Kendahl
Just bin. i have a bin of water bottles.
00:05:18
Julian Contreras Jr
Like you just have a bin just where they go.
00:05:20
Kendahl
Yeah. Literally. Yeah.
00:05:23
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. I feel like you collect them. Like, oh, I need this one because it it serves this purpose. And I need this one because it's got this cool picture on it. Or this one's shaped like a gorilla face.
00:05:34
Julian Contreras Jr
And I need to collect all four of those colors, right?
00:05:34
Kendahl
Right.
00:05:36
Julian Contreras Jr
because So I better get four.
00:05:37
Kendahl
yeah
00:05:39
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:05:39
Julian Contreras Jr
It just happens like that.
00:05:39
Kendahl
Yep.
00:05:40
Kendahl
Yep. Or you go you're like, okay, well, I'm going to buy this one. this one's but This one's $6, but I can buy three for $12? Yeah.
00:05:49
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. And I don't have this Hydro Flask in this neon watermelon colors. i need that one for the new the new year.
00:05:58
Kendahl
i I do have to ask, though. You had a clear and pink one. That's... It looked like a child's one. that was a little worried that you you

Challenges & Memories of Setting up a Pool

00:06:08
Kendahl
needed to surprise me with something. but
00:06:10
Julian Contreras Jr
still have a child in the house.
00:06:12
Kendahl
Yes, you have a child. It was just it was i' just not one that I thought that he would typically go after.
00:06:14
Julian Contreras Jr
it
00:06:18
Julian Contreras Jr
I don't think it's a sippy cup.
00:06:21
Kendahl
It looked like it. It's all right.
00:06:22
Julian Contreras Jr
um
00:06:23
Kendahl
Anyway,
00:06:25
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, but that was a huge project.
00:06:25
Kendahl
and now
00:06:26
Julian Contreras Jr
It took hours to do. It was all of Saturday, plus I had some wrestling on there, so that was a good time.
00:06:34
Kendahl
Man. See, we're we're trying to put a pool in our backyard, and our our our whole backyard is not level. It literally is at a slope at every angle. There's no level point.
00:06:45
Kendahl
The only level point is quite literally the the most obnoxious 10 by 10 spot between three trees with a bunch of roots going through the ground. So it's just not it's not conducive for a pool setup.
00:06:58
Kendahl
So we decided we were going to the back corner, and the back corner is um is like the worst of the worst. But we're like, oh, we'll build it up and put some rock in it. No, no, it's terrible. I spent two days doing this, and it's just it's I feel like I'm not even a half the way there, and it's so terrible.
00:07:15
Julian Contreras Jr
Nice. i I remember when I was in charge of ah watching your goats. And you said you could use the pool anytime.
00:07:20
Kendahl
Oh, yeah.
00:07:21
Julian Contreras Jr
I think we used it all five days that I was in charge.
00:07:27
Julian Contreras Jr
We had to like refill it.
00:07:28
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:07:28
Julian Contreras Jr
We're like, you can't throw the water out because he's going to know.
00:07:31
Kendahl
That's so funny. Well, and the thing is, is like we, you know, that's the, that's the, that's the whole thing is we want to have the pool again, but man, it's so hard where we're at because of the, the, the way the ground is. But yeah, anyway, it's been, it's been obnoxious anyway.
00:07:47
Kendahl
so that's my side of the story. I've just

Helping Friends & Car Troubles

00:07:49
Kendahl
been doing that. And then I'm, as i was saying, I had a friend of mine that had some car troubles. And um she reached out to me. Well, I'll tell you, I made the mistake of saying, oh, yeah, I could fix just about dang near anything.
00:08:04
Kendahl
She's like, anything and i said yeah for the most part and i've never had it something i couldn't fix or at least you know become an expert through youtube university on it and she's like oh what about cars i was like oh yeah i know i've been i've been fixing cars for years she's like oh well my car's not going to pass inspection can you come and help me like repair the brakes do the filters and i was like sure yeah so i so i spent the better part of this morning uh in in this swass heat
00:08:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, jeez.
00:08:25
Julian Contreras Jr
cheese
00:08:35
Kendahl
um helping and I mean, it feels good to do that. I feel good helping her and doing that. But yeah, I was, um, it was it was pretty bad.
00:08:44
Julian Contreras Jr
a Well, to keep that movie related, I have nick i have nipples, Greg.
00:08:45
Kendahl
So
00:08:49
Julian Contreras Jr
Can you milk me?
00:08:50
Kendahl
Oh, geez. And Fockers.
00:08:53
Julian Contreras Jr
That's what it sounded like.
00:08:54
Kendahl
That's great. Now I said it really, I said it right the Fockers.
00:08:57
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, we're to have to put an E for explicit on this episode.
00:08:57
Kendahl
Anyway. Okay,
00:08:59
Julian Contreras Jr
we got SWAS, Fockers.
00:09:03
Julian Contreras Jr
Anyway, let's let's get this back to ah entertainment for the ticket holders here.
00:09:04
Kendahl
okay so
00:09:08
Kendahl
So I want to go to a movie that we talked about a long time

Movie Discussions: 'Novocaine' & 'Meet the Fockers'

00:09:12
Kendahl
ago. i had so i watched it. i I reached out to you and i was like, hey, did you see this yet? you're like, no, but I'll try. Novocaine. It's on streaming.
00:09:19
Julian Contreras Jr
Yes.
00:09:21
Kendahl
It's on Peacock, right?
00:09:22
Julian Contreras Jr
Paramount+. Yeah. Alright,
00:09:24
Kendahl
Paramount Plus. That's right. Paramount Plus. And um I got to ask you, like i I have my opinion on it. What did you think?
00:09:32
Julian Contreras Jr
we'll dive right into Novocaine. Love it. Little Jack Quaid action here. I thought it was pretty good. There were some potholes everywhere. There was a lot of action that I wasn't expecting.
00:09:43
Kendahl
Everywhere.
00:09:46
Julian Contreras Jr
It was more graphic than I thought it was going to be, which... That was plus for me. I love when stuff goes over the top.
00:09:52
Kendahl
Okay, so did you like the very last jab? Yeah. The bone? jab
00:09:57
Julian Contreras Jr
ah Oh, when he like broke his wrist.
00:10:00
Kendahl
yeah
00:10:01
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, and then he uses the wrist bone to...
00:10:03
Kendahl
the bone
00:10:04
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Yeah, exactly. That was pretty good. and But I did look at my wife and i was like, so that that hand is gone now, right? You've like infected every possible thing of putting that hand back on.
00:10:19
Kendahl
So let's let's let the... Okay, so

Deep Dive into Stephen King's 'The Long Walk'

00:10:22
Kendahl
everybody. Novocaine is a movie with Jack Wade. He plays a character that cannot feel pain. He is unable to feel pain. So he talks about how he could chew his own tongue off and not know it or um you know how he could like hurt his hand and he he would burn his hand, not even recognize it until he looked at it and goes, oh...
00:10:41
Kendahl
Dang. Ow. And it's just, there's no recognition there.
00:10:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Diagnosis.
00:10:46
Kendahl
And it's it's it's actually a a true to form, um you know, I don't want to call it disease. it's It's a physical malfunction of the nerves diagnosis.
00:10:52
Julian Contreras Jr
diagnosis
00:10:54
Kendahl
There you go. um And it's just that the nervous system has has no endings that allow him to have those transmissions to the brain that tell them where the pain is and what's happening. And so he he then gets called a superhero.
00:11:08
Kendahl
And... ah Okay, so... That was one of the biggest frustrations to me. Was this... Like... This person comes into his life and then... Turns out she was planted?
00:11:23
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Yeah. That was, I actually kind of got me like, is I was watching it with my wife.
00:11:25
Kendahl
But...
00:11:28
Julian Contreras Jr
Right. And as soon as she was in there, I was like, well, that's kind of stupid. She's not tied up at all, but she's at the table by herself and it got the one guy yelling and I'm like, okay, well maybe she's tied down like at the waist.
00:11:35
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:11:40
Julian Contreras Jr
She can't really do anything with her hands. So, and then he says something and she says his name. And I was like, my mouth kind of dropped for a second. was like, oh this is where this is going?
00:11:54
Julian Contreras Jr
Dang it. I wanted her to be an actual person in need of help.
00:11:55
Kendahl
yeah
00:12:00
Kendahl
Right. And that's ah that's what I'm saying. Like it kind of took me and i was like, oh man. Yeah.
00:12:05
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:12:05
Kendahl
That sucks. just Just because of the the the dimension of what he's doing. Like, just, ugh. Like, all this stuff just go nowhere.
00:12:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Yeah.
00:12:16
Kendahl
And, i don't know. And then, so, I will say, i i did enjoy the movie to an extent, but there was a
00:12:24
Julian Contreras Jr
It a lot of fun. It was really All
00:12:26
Kendahl
Yes, it is a fun movie. I think I looked too deep into it because there was a few things like towards the end. I was like, wait, are you serious? Like, geez. Okay, yeah just go ahead. yope No, you just broke that too. Okay.
00:12:41
Kendahl
Yep. Yep. Okay, go. Yep.
00:12:43
Julian Contreras Jr
right.
00:12:43
Kendahl
Oh, you do that too. All
00:12:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Do you want to know that one of the things that bothered me the most? Like the most out of this whole movie.
00:12:50
Kendahl
right.
00:12:52
Julian Contreras Jr
it's There's a lot of implausibles and intangibles that cannot just happen. But the one thing that got to me was when his buddy shows up and he's wearing the leather jacket on his Harley.
00:13:04
Julian Contreras Jr
And he switches clothes. That leather jacket is small on Jack Quaid.
00:13:13
Julian Contreras Jr
And it was fully zipped up on his buddy.
00:13:13
Kendahl
Oh, yeah.
00:13:16
Julian Contreras Jr
I'm like, there's no possible way.
00:13:16
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:13:18
Julian Contreras Jr
That's like me giving your skinny butt a jacket when it's cold and you wearing it and be like, oh, I can't, I can't zip it up. i'm like, like, no way that jacket should be way too big for him.
00:13:29
Julian Contreras Jr
And it's sitting here showing his Fonzie shirt.
00:13:29
Kendahl
Yeah. there
00:13:31
Julian Contreras Jr
I'm like, oh, come on.
00:13:33
Kendahl
Well, and the thing is, it's it's like, okay, it's it's also kind of like the gun and the hot oil. ah if that If that hot oil i mean that hot oil' is in the.300 range, it would have been firing off every round inside that gun at that point.
00:13:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:13:49
Kendahl
i guess just There's no way it wouldn't have had done something to cause problems. and and There's no way it would have been able to fire when he grabbed it and did that.
00:14:01
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:14:02
Kendahl
There were a lot of little things that I just went, okay, sure.
00:14:06
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:14:07
Kendahl
But yeah, it is a fun movie. I don't want to spend too much time on it. It is a fun movie. There's plot holes all over the place. There's a few parts where I was like, all right, I'm going to go past this.
00:14:17
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:14:18
Kendahl
I can see that. Yep, that's what's happening. Okay, play now action. Okay.
00:14:23
Julian Contreras Jr
Alright, so how many ah broken bones do you give it out of 10?
00:14:23
Kendahl
So.
00:14:27
Kendahl
have 10. Jeez. I'll give it a solid like six and a half, seven.
00:14:33
Julian Contreras Jr
That's exactly where I was at.
00:14:34
Kendahl
It's a fun movie.
00:14:35
Julian Contreras Jr
It was six and a half bones.
00:14:36
Kendahl
All right. Yeah, it's ah it's a fun movie. You'll watch it one time in your life and be like, oh, yeah, I saw that. That's all right. It's good.
00:14:44
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah was Yeah, it was fun. But, all right, that's Novocaine.
00:14:45
Kendahl
Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
00:14:47
Julian Contreras Jr
If you want to have a lot of fun, go ahead and watch that. It's on Paramount+. plus Streaming anytime you want. Really, if you're bored, throw that on there.
00:14:53
Kendahl
yeah
00:14:55
Julian Contreras Jr
You'll see what I mean by the leather jacket.
00:14:57
Kendahl
All right, so um I got to say the one thing I do want to throw in there. So I i finished the series The Last of Us, or not The Last of Us. This is Us, sorry. This is Us.
00:15:07
Julian Contreras Jr
All
00:15:08
Kendahl
And um it's it's leaving Netflix this week. So if you haven't watched it and you want to power through six seasons at 20 episodes apiece, go be it, but I don't think you'll make it.
00:15:18
Julian Contreras Jr
Nah. now
00:15:20
Kendahl
um But for all of our all of our listeners out there, i I've talked to it a few times. That was a really good series. I loved the way they ended it because it makes you think.
00:15:31
Kendahl
um And the reason i'm bringing that up is because there's something else that we want to talk about tonight that really makes you think at the very end. And this this series in some ways kind of does that.
00:15:44
Kendahl
it It throws in this... um and Can you hear my dog? Can you hear my dog?
00:15:50
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Sounds like a duck.
00:15:52
Kendahl
Oh my gosh.
00:15:52
Julian Contreras Jr
You got, you're in an aviary. You got a duck now.
00:15:56
Kendahl
I got ah my dogs playing with her toy on the other side of the door. I'm so sorry. So she's having fun anyway. So, um, it, it, at the very end of the series, it, it makes you go, okay, was it this or was it this?
00:16:13
Kendahl
And, and I like those, I like that kind of an ending because it makes you think through what you just watched or in the case of what we're going to talk about, what we just read. And so, um, we,
00:16:25
Kendahl
we had talked about the the movie that's coming out called the long walk.
00:16:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Correct.
00:16:30
Kendahl
And, um, Julian and I both decided that we were going to go and read this book. Um, or in this case, I, I, I listened to it. ah just The squeaking is just but's so it is.
00:16:40
Julian Contreras Jr
It's distracting. It's so distracting.
00:16:46
Kendahl
Seriously. What? Can you take that away from her? Thank you.
00:16:51
Julian Contreras Jr
It's a little, we're not going to edit that out at all either.
00:16:52
Kendahl
yeah but You guys going to love that part.
00:16:54
Julian Contreras Jr
It's in there.
00:16:56
Kendahl
I'm so sorry. All right. So you guys get here. I have a household. So um anyhow, the ah point is, is that the long walk is about this um kind of Hunger Game-like situation of which people are forced into a long walk.
00:17:12
Julian Contreras Jr
Well, no, see, already right there, I see it different.
00:17:12
Kendahl
You have...
00:17:14
Julian Contreras Jr
They're not forced into it at all. It actually, you had to go through two rounds of application and a physical.
00:17:17
Kendahl
Well, okay. So yeah. they they Choices. Yeah.
00:17:23
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:17:23
Kendahl
So, well, you are you are correct. I'm not going to correct you on that because that's true, right? I mean, there's this element of choice, but I feel like it's almost um a lottery setup as well.
00:17:40
Julian Contreras Jr
Right, because you had it you're either a primary or a secondary.
00:17:40
Kendahl
um And so...
00:17:43
Kendahl
Right.
00:17:43
Julian Contreras Jr
So you're the walker or you're backup, yeah.
00:17:46
Kendahl
Yeah. And so, um right off the bat, my i I kind of want to hear your take on on your initial um response from it Not like the ending, not not any of that. I want to hear what your initial response was.
00:18:03
Julian Contreras Jr
All right, so I did read this book. I don't read a lot of books. Some of them I just read because they're fun and whatever. But this one I really wanted to pay attention to.
00:18:14
Julian Contreras Jr
was 10 and a half hours, I think, almost 11. ah really wanted to get through this in the weekend so we could record this episode. And that's exactly what I did. i powered through 11 of... of this book by Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman.
00:18:29
Julian Contreras Jr
So right at the beginning, you had told me there was a, like a little story of why Stephen King wrote as this person and how this book came to be.
00:18:30
Kendahl
yeah
00:18:37
Kendahl
right and and and and why he had this alter alternate ego of richard bachman yeah
00:18:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. So that was really good to understand where Stephen King was coming from and realizing it wasn't going to be your typical Stephen King bullies with the knives and carving initials in your stomach or your forehead or whatever else there may be.
00:18:57
Kendahl
and well yeah Or like the supernatural part that tends to follow him.
00:18:57
Julian Contreras Jr
And
00:19:01
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:19:01
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah, it says that scary. It's not like I wasn't scared at one bit.
00:19:05
Kendahl
No.
00:19:06
Julian Contreras Jr
Like that's shouldn't even be on there as scary, but
00:19:06
Kendahl
No.
00:19:10
Kendahl
I think there's some intense parts. Yeah.
00:19:12
Julian Contreras Jr
I liked it a lot. I did find myself like questioning it. It's called The Long Walk. It's like watching Lone Survivor and being like, well, the only person that survived was him. That's just what it was.
00:19:27
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:19:27
Julian Contreras Jr
All they're doing is walking. And I kind of got the idea that I wanted to try, but then I started thinking about it. I'm like, there's no way that's going to be entertaining or healthy for me at all.
00:19:39
Julian Contreras Jr
Because these boys... walked for four days straight like almost 100 and something miles
00:19:48
Kendahl
It was over 200. Yeah. Yeah.
00:19:50
Julian Contreras Jr
over 200 without any breaks they had to basically sleepwalk they could have as much water as they wanted they just called for canteen and they got little uh let's call them cat food packets of protein or tuna juice or whatever they were describing just a really fast protein to keep them alive i guess
00:19:51
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:19:55
Kendahl
yeah
00:20:05
Kendahl
yeah
00:20:12
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:20:13
Julian Contreras Jr
And all the nuances and relationships that these boys built with all these complete strangers because they were in the same situation that they had put themselves in really intrigued me.
00:20:27
Julian Contreras Jr
So I did like it. I stayed tuned. I got emotionally involved with ah some of the characters that were going on and their relationships.
00:20:36
Kendahl
yeah
00:20:38
Kendahl
So i want to talk about i want to talk about this book in a more in-depth element, but I want to preface before we start that saying, because this is going to be a movie that will come out, I i think that there will be some um elements we're going to talk about that might give away to the movie.
00:20:56
Kendahl
If you don't want to hear anything, I will tell you right now, I would just skip.
00:20:57
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:21:03
Julian Contreras Jr
Well, I don't know how much we're actually going to do because they, I have a feeling they're going to change a few things.
00:21:03
Kendahl
Skip ahead. Ha ha ha.
00:21:08
Kendahl
i I do too. But um what i'm I guess what I'm saying is this I want to talk a few things about this book, but I don't want to i don't want to make someone go, oh man, they're just giving stuff away.

Recommendations & Warnings about 'The Long Walk'

00:21:20
Kendahl
So if you don't want to hear much about that, um I'm going to start off with my opinion of the book, and then I want to talk about it. So after my opinion, you can skip forward a little bit or just stop the episode where you are.
00:21:30
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. okay
00:21:31
Kendahl
um but So my opinion, I liked this. Okay, so what's really funny is I'm a big Stephen King fan. I've read several of his books. um One of my favorite books he wrote um he wrote was called The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.
00:21:45
Kendahl
It's very similar in the sense that it's a peril situation where a girl gets stuck um in the in the woods without her parents, and she has to kind of figure out how to go home. And the only thing that helps her stay sane is listening to baseball games and from her favorite picture, Tom Gordon.
00:22:04
Kendahl
And so um it's it. There's a lot of nuances between the books that are similar in the sense of like the way he writes the way he presents some of the storylines. But one of the other things that's very similar is a is a book um that would turn into a movie, the movie Stand By Me.
00:22:21
Kendahl
And um it it has a lot of the same like coming of age, boys discussing what's going on, how they feel with each other.
00:22:33
Kendahl
And it's like you said, there's it it does kind of grip you with all of these really cool um you know odd stories that are going on. And at the same time, there's gunfire because this guy stopped walking for four minutes. you know And so it it there is this intense part to the book that's really good and I like it.
00:22:52
Kendahl
My overall thought of this book was exactly like This Is Us. I loved the fact that at the very end of this book, it makes you think.
00:23:04
Kendahl
It makes you think about, i did like that.
00:23:04
Julian Contreras Jr
You like that. Okay. Cause your text did sound like that.
00:23:08
Kendahl
So, um no, it's it's obnoxious. I mean, i like I like a book that has a solid ending that tells me what's going on. But at the same time, I do also like the thought process.
00:23:20
Kendahl
I just, i it took me like an hour to process the ending of this book. um Sorry. It took me like an hour. Honestly, like it was, I i texted you the minute I finished it.
00:23:31
Kendahl
i even went back and read the or listened to the last chapter one more time. What did I miss?
00:23:36
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. You didn't miss anything.
00:23:37
Kendahl
And no, it was exactly.
00:23:38
Julian Contreras Jr
It was what it was. Mm-mm.
00:23:41
Kendahl
But I thought I missed something. I thought, oh I must have missed something. I was doing something. No, I didn't. And and so and i texted you. I was like, what the I was pissed. I was like, what the actual crap?
00:23:54
Kendahl
And but then as I started really like running through the elements of the story in my head, I realized, oh, I think I even texted you. Was it this way the whole time?
00:24:07
Kendahl
And That's the kind of thing that i I kind of like. So I recommend this. Go out. if If you're someone that likes to read a book before a movie comes out, do it.
00:24:17
Kendahl
If you want to wait until the movie comes out and then read the book as a comparative, do it. I highly recommend just if you have Audible, listen to it. If you have a Kindle, pick it up, read it. If you want to get a copy, go get it.
00:24:30
Kendahl
A couple things to know before you do that. This book was written in the 80s. It's very much... um yeah There's some language in this book that, as my wife says, has some no-no words to it.
00:24:44
Kendahl
um they're just They're words that society today says we don't know we don't use them anymore. ah And it's not that they were wrong. It's just were a part of the vernacular of the of the time.
00:24:57
Kendahl
So just to understand that, um which those are the things I'm pretty sure they're going to change in the movie. Yeah.
00:25:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Well, I mean, I don't think you even have to apologize for that because picking up any Stephen King book, whether he's writing as Richard Bachman or himself, he uses those words almost all the time.
00:25:11
Kendahl
He has.
00:25:12
Julian Contreras Jr
So, I mean, yeah I wouldn't apologize for that.
00:25:12
Kendahl
Yeah, he has in some older books. Yeah.
00:25:15
Julian Contreras Jr
That's just the way Stephen King writes.
00:25:17
Julian Contreras Jr
So that's not on you or me. We didn't do that.
00:25:17
Kendahl
I, I, no, no.
00:25:20
Kendahl
I think I, the reason i I apologize is because I don't want somebody, i don't want to, I don't want somebody to listen to this podcast, go pick up that book and be like, that's stupid, Kendall. Why would he tell me to read this? I'm just like throw it across the room, put a hole in the wall or something.
00:25:34
Julian Contreras Jr
No, we're we're strictly here for entertainment. You can read the back cover. You can read all of the reviews that are on this book. And yes, there is language. And yes, they are quote unquote, no, no words that we don't use anymore for a very good reason.
00:25:48
Julian Contreras Jr
But that's the way he writes the books. And that's the way these kids personalities were during that long walk, which by the way, does it even say

Speculations on 'The Long Walk' Ending & Comparisons

00:25:56
Julian Contreras Jr
what year it's supposed to be? Because I got the feeling that there was modern times to it.
00:25:58
Kendahl
No.
00:26:01
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:26:02
Julian Contreras Jr
And I got a feeling that maybe it was long ago at the same time, but I was like, I don't know what year this is supposed to be. Maybe I just missed that and I'm stupid, but.
00:26:09
Kendahl
that's why that's why I feel like it's almost like a Hunger Games type thing because it has the the nuance of being like modern, but things have changed and so this is required.
00:26:22
Kendahl
um But at the same time, you know Looking back and reading the book, I realized that, I don't know, um i you know there's some there's some elements to it that say maybe it was supposed to be in that time frame. And that's the presentation from the main characters that they're, you know especially for like Garrity, who's pretty much the main character in the book.
00:26:42
Kendahl
um And you know Abraham and and I mean, there's all these characters that are really just great characters.
00:26:48
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, it was, I will say it was kind of hard in my mind to keep them separated. That's why I had to go watch the trailer twice after I was done to get faces to the names that I was reading.
00:27:00
Julian Contreras Jr
Because the the narrator did an awesome job at doing different accents and different ways these boys spoke.
00:27:01
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:27:07
Julian Contreras Jr
But seeing a face on the screen is going to be a lot easier to so keep these kids separated.
00:27:07
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:27:12
Kendahl
Well, and I think there's some...
00:27:12
Julian Contreras Jr
Because I was like, wait, which one is this again?
00:27:15
Kendahl
Well, and even um like Bachman, when he was... was it Was it Bachman? The character in the book?
00:27:21
Julian Contreras Jr
No, that's Stephen King's last name.
00:27:22
Kendahl
No. um Oh, no, no, no. What was his name? The... the
00:27:29
Kendahl
the one i everybody hated Barkley no Stebbins was at the end anyway the but the one that everybody hated and they kept calling him killer my brain left me on on who that was um like the way he would the the way the um at least the in the audible version the way the guy would transition every single vocal i was like good night how do you remember which one was which
00:27:31
Julian Contreras Jr
Stebbins?
00:27:34
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. I don't know. It doesn't matter.
00:27:57
Kendahl
And sometimes I think he mixed a couple of them up, but it's okay. um But it was good.
00:28:00
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Red.
00:28:01
Kendahl
I mean, honestly, this was a, this was a book that was really good. And I think, um you know, it's funny because like my daughter was like, I don't really want want to watch this because of the political climate we're in I don't, I don't see the connection.
00:28:14
Kendahl
i don't I don't see any connection between any of that. So don't... If you see the preview and you're like, oh, no, no, there's no political connection to this. don't Don't go down that road with this because that's... I've already heard that a couple from a couple people.
00:28:24
Julian Contreras Jr
right
00:28:26
Kendahl
It has no political connection. It's not anything like that. it's It's good. It's just... This is just like Hunger Games. It's a it's a ah fictional... time setting with things that are just a little bit different than what it is now.
00:28:38
Kendahl
And these boys are just forced to walk as long as they can until the last one standing, you know.
00:28:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Right. I'm to ask you a few questions that maybe I didn't understand it from the book because I've only read it the one time. So we we've already discussed it. We don't know what time frame this is supposed to be, modern times or early 50s, because there was a lot of different technology.
00:29:02
Julian Contreras Jr
So that's just up in the air right now.
00:29:03
Kendahl
right Yeah, I feel like i feel like it was mostly somewhere between like late 70s, 80s, in like the majority of technology in time.
00:29:14
Kendahl
But then he talked about handheld computers, so don't know.
00:29:19
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. yeah Question two, they never nailed down what the final prize is.
00:29:28
Kendahl
Never. No. And that was the one thing that did, that was my WTF moment. I was like, come on, like what?
00:29:35
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, just like if you're going to walk until you pretty much die, like if you don't, ah this isn't a spoiler.
00:29:35
Kendahl
We're so vested in this.
00:29:42
Julian Contreras Jr
It's in the trailer. If you don't keep walking, you're eliminated. Your ticket is punched.
00:29:49
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:29:49
Julian Contreras Jr
And it's in a very violent way.
00:29:52
Julian Contreras Jr
But
00:29:52
Kendahl
Very, very violently in your physicality.
00:29:55
Julian Contreras Jr
I needed to know for my own sake what the prize was. And they alluded to it was anything you want for the rest of your life. It was like you got wishes. You just wished for anything and you got it.
00:30:08
Julian Contreras Jr
Like they went they didn't use the word wishes.
00:30:09
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:30:10
Julian Contreras Jr
But so was it just...
00:30:12
Kendahl
Yeah. But I, I, that, no, I never got anything either. And I think I almost want to say that's part of the ending of the book, because again, we're not going to give much away in that sense, but I, I don't know, man, I want to just, want to talk about that part, but I, I think that's the, that's the illusion of, of what is the story is to make you think, was the prize ever really there?
00:30:40
Julian Contreras Jr
exactly I don't know. cause they one of the kids re just tells a story about when he watched the the long walk end when he was a kid. I don't know if this is a yearly thing or by...
00:30:49
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:30:52
Julian Contreras Jr
ah by Help me.
00:30:54
Kendahl
Bi-annual?
00:30:55
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, thank you.
00:30:56
Kendahl
yeah I don't know. Every two years, something?
00:30:59
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, if this is every year, that's insane. That's 100 kids every year.
00:31:04
Julian Contreras Jr
That's crazy.
00:31:04
Kendahl
Right?
00:31:06
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:31:06
Julian Contreras Jr
But he tells a story about how he watched it end. And the two guy, one guy collapsed, got his ticket. And then the next guy collapsed right after that. And they went to help him up and they couldn't figure out what he had said.
00:31:21
Julian Contreras Jr
And then there's another kid that was like, well, maybe there is nothing. We just walk until we... All are gone and that's how it is.
00:31:30
Kendahl
Yeah. Well, and then the one says that he had heard whoever the one guy had won and then he died a week later.
00:31:38
Julian Contreras Jr
Right, right, right, right, so.
00:31:39
Kendahl
Yeah. So, yeah, I mean, there's there, I think that, but again, I think this goes to kind of what I was saying. I, I think it it's the part of the book that makes you think, is is the prize ever really won?
00:31:53
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. I don't know. I really want to see the movie. I want to see how they end it because in my mind, and here's going to be the one and a half, two minutes of spoiler. i What I want to say is he sees that black figure and he walks towards it and he, I'm not going to give a name of who wins, but he says the other guy fell down and he just keeps walking towards the figure until he has the power come back to his legs where he can run.
00:32:27
Julian Contreras Jr
And that's what he does.
00:32:28
Kendahl
Yeah, right. right
00:32:31
Julian Contreras Jr
To me, in my opinion, to me, I, sorry if this is the way the movie is going to end.
00:32:31
Kendahl
i
00:32:36
Julian Contreras Jr
I hope it doesn't, but, Did he just die as well?
00:32:43
Julian Contreras Jr
That's my feeling. you so You have a different feeling and I want to hear it real quick. But I feel like he made it just long enough past the other kid because that was their little battle between each other that he just died ah right after he did.
00:32:59
Kendahl
i And see, and i i my my two cents, and this is, again, we're just being careful, the spoiler here. i I think he was dead the whole time.
00:33:10
Julian Contreras Jr
See, now you text me that and I don't know what that means.
00:33:10
Kendahl
And this was...
00:33:13
Julian Contreras Jr
Like, what do you mean the whole time? Like the walk never existed?
00:33:14
Kendahl
i
00:33:17
Kendahl
Yeah. And this was just his way of dealing with with death.
00:33:23
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:33:25
Kendahl
Because it's a long walk. it's He's going to where he needs to be. And so, and he's torturing himself because he talks about, if you think about it, he talks about all the things that happened to his life that were negative.
00:33:36
Kendahl
He talked about all these bad things that happened to him. And he, he talks about how he feels so bad about himself for all those things that happened. And so this is in, in my brain, this is the thinking part is,
00:33:50
Kendahl
thinking back to all that is this long walk, his self deprecation, deprecate, deprecating, deprecating moment, where he's bringing himself back and he's depressive of his actions in his whole life.
00:34:03
Kendahl
And he and he died. And the long walk is his way of dealing with his own life and having to deal with the the nuances of of torturing himself until he could get to the point where he finally forgave himself, which is that last person that was that that nagging person that frustrated him.
00:34:25
Kendahl
And that final person was done, was gone. And then that's when he's finally released from it all and can finally move on.
00:34:35
Julian Contreras Jr
So if that's the case, like going back to all the stories that those boys told of why they're there for their own reasons, are you saying those are all his reasons?
00:34:46
Kendahl
I'm saying, I'm saying, yeah, but they're all.
00:34:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Like, cause there's a lot of stuff. There's the one boy that had the girlfriend and they worked in the button store and they went to the drive-in theater all the time, but they couldn't live together.
00:34:58
Julian Contreras Jr
There's that whole like story. Like, I feel like even if you were so mad at yourself, why would you, all how could you make up a story like that? What does that serve?
00:34:58
Kendahl
Yep.
00:35:07
Kendahl
I don't know. I'm this, I guess that I was thinking
00:35:13
Kendahl
Either that or somewhere along the walk, he did die and this was his way of dealing with that moment. Because we know that in the brain, a moment can happen within the snap of a finger and last a very long portion of time within the thought process.
00:35:32
Kendahl
Well, and I don't know. So this goes this is what I'm talking about. like these are the these are the things you can think through. Like I don't know. And I kind of agree with you too, because that's what I thought when, when I had to go back and, and re-listen, I was like, Oh wait, did he just die?
00:35:47
Kendahl
and I missed it.
00:35:48
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I feel like...
00:35:49
Kendahl
And that's what I went back and listened, but there doesn't, it doesn't say.
00:35:53
Julian Contreras Jr
all right. Okay, so... I mean, if this conversation has intrigued you at all to at least go watch the trailer and maybe go see this movie, I'm not saying you have to read the book.
00:36:04
Julian Contreras Jr
If you're a reader, it's a good so good read. I liked it.
00:36:07
Kendahl
yeah
00:36:08
Julian Contreras Jr
But this movie is going to go one or two ways. Either I'm going to like it, I feel like, or it's going to get to the very end. And I'm going to go like, well, that was two and a half hours of shoes hitting the pavement.
00:36:23
Julian Contreras Jr
ah
00:36:24
Kendahl
so I got to ask you, in that same in that same element, did you ever watch The Island?
00:36:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, with ah Leo.
00:36:30
Kendahl
Or shut Shutter Island? Shutter Island, sorry.
00:36:32
Julian Contreras Jr
Still with Leo, yeah.
00:36:34
Kendahl
Yeah. so
00:36:35
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, watched both.
00:36:36
Kendahl
um So Shutter Island was based off of a book. And once again, I read the book before I watched the movie. The book has a very, very different connotation to the end of the book or of the than the movie gave.
00:36:50
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:36:50
Kendahl
So the movie indicates that
00:36:50
Julian Contreras Jr
Mm-hmm.
00:36:53
Kendahl
You know, it was always he was always there and he was always crazy. in in um And that it's just him running through these situations every so often to get through it.
00:37:06
Kendahl
In the movie, it's like, all right, now we got to take him out. and he Because he's crazy, you know, and he's running these things up again. So, I don't know. But I think it kind of has a little bit of the same, right? It's that...
00:37:19
Kendahl
I was a little disappointed in the movie because I felt like the movie didn't have the same climactic end of making it seem like, oh my gosh, this whole time and everything was all about him. And it, you know, it had a very almost Fight Club like ending for me from the book side where it wasn't so much on the movie side.
00:37:42
Julian Contreras Jr
okay that was a long walk we got a few more things here to talk about we're at the uh more than halfway mark here that we want to be at i do want to talk about a movie real quick and the lore that's coming to it i know you haven't seen this movie i don't know if you have the desire to see this movie you called it uh the tiktok title that everyone is calling it
00:37:43
Kendahl
So anyway.
00:37:50
Kendahl
Yep.
00:37:56
Kendahl
Not
00:38:02
Kendahl
yet.

Humorous Movie Experiences

00:38:03
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:38:05
Julian Contreras Jr
so a buddy and i went to go see
00:38:06
Kendahl
I've all, we've already, we've already put the boundaries of ah of our age appropriateness today.
00:38:11
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, we're right on the limit.
00:38:11
Kendahl
geez.
00:38:13
Julian Contreras Jr
We're walking a fine line here. 28-inch line here.
00:38:18
Kendahl
oies
00:38:19
Julian Contreras Jr
I went to go see, with a friend of mine, 28 years later. Love the other movies. Went to go see this one. We were both super excited to see it.
00:38:30
Julian Contreras Jr
i will say up for a little side story, just for the friend of mine that went with me, it was absolutely hilarious, Kendall. So we stand in line. We get our popcorn and stuff. We go to our seats.
00:38:43
Julian Contreras Jr
And you know, like when the seat is empty next to you, when you're getting comfortable, you put your popcorn down to your left or your right on the empty seat.
00:38:50
Kendahl
Okay.
00:38:50
Julian Contreras Jr
Right?
00:38:51
Kendahl
Yep.
00:38:52
Julian Contreras Jr
We all do that. he just happened to put the popcorn on the little wedge that it tipped over in the chair.
00:39:00
Kendahl
Oh.
00:39:01
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah So he lost half his bag, right? He's, he scoops it up and he's like, ah, I'm still going to eat it. Whatever. Sits it on the armchair and he like fixes his shirt and he's like, ah, sits down, elbows, this popcorn straight through the hole in the chairs.
00:39:20
Kendahl
yeah
00:39:21
Julian Contreras Jr
Perfect elbow shot. This popcorn goes right behind us, splats all over the floor. And I'm talking all over the place. He looks up at this guy and he's like, oh my gosh.
00:39:34
Julian Contreras Jr
So I can't help but laugh, you know, because he's my friend.
00:39:37
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:39:37
Julian Contreras Jr
I love him. But at the same time, it's hilarious. and i So he's going to go clean it up.
00:39:43
Kendahl
That's terrible.
00:39:45
Julian Contreras Jr
And I'm like, all right, what can I do? well I got to help this situation. He's given me enough entertainment. I'm laughing. So I was like, I'll just walk out front and while he's cleaning that and I'll see if I can get him another popcorn.

Review of '28 Years Later'

00:39:58
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:39:58
Julian Contreras Jr
So I stand in line and I'm standing in line. I can't not laugh. yeah Every time I'm looking at it, I'm seeing him just elbow this popcorn. So I finally get up and I start laughing and I'm like, Hey, we're in the movie. My buddy just bought a small popcorn and it's all over the floor. Like he's cleaning it. Is there anything you can do or I can pay for it?
00:40:20
Julian Contreras Jr
It's fine. She giggles a little bit. She's like, I'll just give you another one. So that was really cool of her. Thank you so much.
00:40:28
Kendahl
That's cool.
00:40:29
Julian Contreras Jr
I didn't catch her name. I'd give you a shout out, but so she made it right. I walked back in, he's barely sitting in his chair from cleaning it all up. He thought I had just gone to the restroom, but I brought him popcorn.
00:40:41
Julian Contreras Jr
And the first words was, thanks, dad.
00:40:46
Kendahl
Very dad move.
00:40:47
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, so he got his popcorn. It was just hilarious. So that was the fun. Now for the negative side. Three ladies behind us that were clearly there just to see the movie for the...
00:41:00
Kendahl
The 28 inches. Okay.
00:41:01
Julian Contreras Jr
so Okay, sure, wow.
00:41:05
Julian Contreras Jr
I was going to say his name, Samson, but you can say whatever you want to say.
00:41:08
Kendahl
okay
00:41:11
Julian Contreras Jr
Please, for me, for me, don't talk during a movie. First five minutes, sure, get settled. Watch the previews.
00:41:24
Julian Contreras Jr
Get the little backstory on what's going on. Do not talk for 45 straight minutes thinking you're whispering because you're not. You're not whispering. I know your names.
00:41:36
Julian Contreras Jr
I know what you're there for. i can understand and hear what you're talking about behind me. I don't need that. I'm here for the movie. I'm here to turn on and shut off what I'm doing.
00:41:48
Kendahl
Thanks, Jessica.
00:41:48
Julian Contreras Jr
All right?
00:41:49
Kendahl
I'm just kidding.
00:41:50
Julian Contreras Jr
That might have been her name. But please don't talk during the movie. It's disrespectful to everyone.
00:41:57
Kendahl
It's terrible.
00:41:59
Julian Contreras Jr
So now the movie. This movie is three separate type of movies. This is all over the place. It starts out with Aaron Taylor Johnson and his son, him teaching them because they've been on this island since the the outbreak and the infection.
00:42:16
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:42:16
Julian Contreras Jr
They don't know modern technology. This is what they do. They live on this island. He's teaching him how to go out and contribute and collect and scavenge for stuff. That's the first part of the movie.
00:42:30
Julian Contreras Jr
The second part of the movie is now the son wants to go out and help the mom who is sick with something reach a doctor. There's a doctor out there in the wild somewhere.
00:42:42
Julian Contreras Jr
So now we're going to just leave Aaron Taylor Johnson at home and we're going to take mom out, which is ah the lady from bike riders, something.
00:42:53
Kendahl
Okay.
00:42:54
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. she Something Comer. So now they're taking her out and now this is movie part B. We're going to take a trip and go try to fix her.
00:43:06
Julian Contreras Jr
We get to the doctor. Turns out it's something that's pretty serious and he can't fix it. But he does kind of like do something helpful. not going to give that away because it's pretty disturbing.
00:43:20
Julian Contreras Jr
And then you get back to the house where there's now a baby.
00:43:27
Julian Contreras Jr
And this is an infected baby, Kendall.
00:43:31
Kendahl
Yeah, heard about that.
00:43:31
Julian Contreras Jr
Straight. Okay. So they say the doctor says it's the power of the placenta who has kept this baby safe inside of an infected pregnant.
00:43:42
Julian Contreras Jr
They're not zombies, but you know talking about.
00:43:44
Kendahl
yeah Okay.
00:43:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Baby comes out just fine. Apparently son takes baby back to dad. Now we're back to Aaron Taylor Johnson.
00:43:56
Julian Contreras Jr
Aaron Taylor Johnson runs out into the ocean looking for his kid, but his kid is somehow way faster than everyone else and has already gone past the bridge. Don't know how that happened either.
00:44:09
Julian Contreras Jr
And then he's by himself and you're like, okay, this kid is going to be all by himself. This is almost towards the end. He gets caught up with all these ah infected and he's taken a few out and he runs into a dead end.
00:44:24
Julian Contreras Jr
And then there's this guy named Jimmy in a velvet tracksuit with long blonde hair. Okay.
00:44:32
Kendahl
Okay.
00:44:32
Julian Contreras Jr
Talks with some crazy accent. And he's like, well, you're out of arrows. What you going to do about them? And he's like, I don't know. I got to figure that out. Like they're just having a conversation with Jimmy. Jimmy's like, do you mind if me and my friends step in? And he's like, sure.
00:44:49
Julian Contreras Jr
And they assemble like matching tracksuit power rangers that jump down and are using some form of fighting style that's in between capoeira and judo with weapons.
00:45:05
Julian Contreras Jr
And they're just having a good old time taking these guys out with just melee weapons. So this movie, like it's three. Like if everything that I just said in the last five minutes was crazy to you, that's exactly how I felt when the credits started to roll.
00:45:21
Julian Contreras Jr
It was insane.
00:45:23
Kendahl
So what do you give it?
00:45:25
Julian Contreras Jr
ah I still give it a seven and a half. It was good, but it was so weird. And I had to do some research and I had to understand why was this movie built the way it was?
00:45:37
Julian Contreras Jr
And it is because this is the start of a new trilogy.
00:45:43
Kendahl
Oh, okay.
00:45:44
Julian Contreras Jr
So in January, there is the second part, 28 years later, The Skull Tower, which is already filmed.
00:45:51
Kendahl
Oh.
00:45:52
Julian Contreras Jr
It's coming out and it's going to focus more on the kid and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
00:45:58
Kendahl
Okay, I didn't know that.
00:45:59
Julian Contreras Jr
So this is a complete start restart of it. Like it evolved a little bit and now it's going somewhere else.
00:46:03
Kendahl
Interesting.
00:46:05
Julian Contreras Jr
And now there's a third one that is slated, but it's not done yet, depending on how these first two do.
00:46:14
Julian Contreras Jr
And something that I didn't nail down, but this whole movie was shot on iPhone.
00:46:19
Kendahl
There's Yeah, well, a large portion of it was Yeah, I read that.
00:46:22
Julian Contreras Jr
That's crazy. That's crazy.
00:46:24
Kendahl
and well And so they they used an array of iPhones to film a bunch of scenes because they wanted to give it the kind of the same rationale viewpoint that was in 28 Days Later, the original.
00:46:39
Julian Contreras Jr
It worked well. There was a lot of stuff. I mean, there was a few cut scenes that I feel like didn't really add to anything. Like when they were teaching the kids how to do archery, they kind of moved in and put two images on the screen of an army learning to use bows and arrows back in like Camelot time.
00:46:58
Julian Contreras Jr
i was like, oh, that doesn't really add anything to the story, but it's okay. I'm with it. Sure. That's what you're going me.
00:47:06
Kendahl
okay
00:47:07
Julian Contreras Jr
So I strongly suggest you stream this guy when it comes up just to see the madness.
00:47:12
Kendahl
okay well i i plan i mean i watched 28 days i watched 28 weeks and i mean 28 weeks later is it's it's a solid movie on its own it doesn't even matter if you've never seen anything just it's a good movie
00:47:25
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I feel like that one is just not part of it anymore. That was a standalone thing. And now they're going this different direction because at the very end of that movie, it looks like France is going down, right?
00:47:34
Kendahl
That's funny.
00:47:38
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:47:39
Julian Contreras Jr
That's not the case in this one. It's just this island still where it first started. They just cut everybody off. Like you can't go in or out of it. In fact, there's a scene where there's some soldiers that are just running.
00:47:53
Julian Contreras Jr
and like, okay, where did these guys come from? Like, is this a flashback? Is this a flash forward? What is this? And it turns out they're just on a boat patrolling the outside and they hit something and they wrecked and they had to swim to the island.
00:48:07
Julian Contreras Jr
So now nobody's gonna come for them, but they do have guns and they do bring cell phones.
00:48:08
Kendahl
Okay.
00:48:12
Julian Contreras Jr
Like there's one guy that has a cell phone and the kid's like, what is that? He's like, well, it's got 1%. So it's soon to be a brick, but right now it's like a form of communication. We can call people and all this. And he's got a picture of his girlfriend And he shows the kid and she's got yeah a lot of makeup on and some other stuff.
00:48:33
Julian Contreras Jr
And the kid's like, what's wrong with her face? Just looks at him because they don't know what makeup and filler and all those plastic surgery, they don't know what that is.
00:48:40
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:48:43
Julian Contreras Jr
So she just looks quote unquote funny to him and the guy gets really a fun offended.
00:48:43
Kendahl
Okay.
00:48:46
Kendahl
That's fine.
00:48:50
Julian Contreras Jr
So yeah, I still give it a seven and a half and eight.
00:48:50
Kendahl
All right. I'm all for it.
00:48:52
Julian Contreras Jr
It's crazy, Kendall.
00:48:53
Julian Contreras Jr
It's crazy.
00:48:53
Kendahl
Good.
00:48:55
Kendahl
All right. Okay, so what else we got on the list?

'Squid Games' Season 3 & Multiverse Discussion

00:49:01
Julian Contreras Jr
uh we're gonna touch a little bit on squid games because we're gonna ahead squid game season three just came out friday six episodes i personally love it i need to watch the last episode to know what's happening i want to hear a little bit about you but not the last episode please
00:49:21
Kendahl
All right. okay, so my, I don't know, um because that last episode makes a huge difference on how I feel about it.
00:49:35
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, OK.
00:49:35
Kendahl
Because leading up to it, because leading up to it, um I don't know, i was i was kind of ah disappointed because I felt like they were, I felt like they were merging all the storylines together, which is kind of the point, I get it
00:49:51
Kendahl
Um, but there, were it was a little bit confusing because I hadn't remembered a lot of the little nuances, you know, um, uh, both.
00:49:56
Julian Contreras Jr
From season two or all the way back to one?
00:50:00
Kendahl
Yeah. mostly Mostly two, but some of one. And so I had to think back and like, I watched it and, um, I, I can say this much. I don't like the way it ended.
00:50:13
Kendahl
i won't say how it ended.
00:50:13
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. Because this is wrapping up all of this.
00:50:15
Kendahl
i don't like the way it ended.
00:50:17
Julian Contreras Jr
are These three are going to wrap up this story.
00:50:21
Kendahl
Yeah, this this the last episode wraps everything up very, very well.
00:50:26
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. Have you heard about the now Squid Games multiverse?
00:50:27
Kendahl
um
00:50:32
Kendahl
Yes, and they allude to that heavily at the very end of the sixth episode.
00:50:36
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. So I do have to put this out there.
00:50:37
Kendahl
Like, heavily, heavily.
00:50:39
Julian Contreras Jr
So there's Squid Games 3 that ends obviously right now.
00:50:39
Kendahl
Heavily, heavily, heavily.
00:50:43
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:50:44
Julian Contreras Jr
In winter 2026, they're going to do a Squid Games 1987.
00:50:50
Kendahl
Okay, makes sense.
00:50:50
Julian Contreras Jr
In the fall of 2026, they're doing Squid Game USA, which is going to be crazy.
00:50:55
Kendahl
that That's, yeah, obvious. Yeah, that's obvious.
00:50:58
Julian Contreras Jr
In the spring of 2027, there's going to be Squid Game the 28th, I think is how I'm reading that.
00:51:05
Kendahl
Hmm.
00:51:06
Julian Contreras Jr
And then to finish it up, by winter 2028, they're going to do Squid Game World. This is all crazy.
00:51:12
Kendahl
Strange.
00:51:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Like this title, the show has gone off. It's insane. And you know, what's funny is we're going to get to all of this winter, 20, 20, we're going to get all the squid games all before we get stranger things.
00:51:26
Kendahl
Okay, so the... Right. so um So the the... Going back in time, Squid Games 87, that makes sense because that'll be the first Squid Games.
00:51:37
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:51:38
Kendahl
and And you learn very quickly that everybody that's involved in Squid Games is either a previous player or um has been a part of it.
00:51:50
Julian Contreras Jr
OK.
00:51:50
Kendahl
um
00:51:51
Kendahl
Like, there's just all these things that that are that are in there. um At the very end, there's a lot that's going on in 6 that alludes to the fact that there's is a big rabbit hole of Squid Games that you didn't understand.
00:52:04
Kendahl
um And they, you very much understand there's going to be Squid Games American version coming up. Like, there's there's no question about it.
00:52:12
Julian Contreras Jr
OK, so one thing, you watch it in the foreign language with subtitles.
00:52:18
Kendahl
I watch it in Korean. Mm-hmm.
00:52:20
Julian Contreras Jr
I watch it dubbed with subtitles as well. It really, really threw me off when the VIPs showed up and they were speaking English. I was like, wait a second. Am I understanding them? No, are there's just no way.
00:52:33
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:52:34
Julian Contreras Jr
So in your, was it dubbed in English or did they just let them speak English?
00:52:34
Kendahl
Yeah. Well, and
00:52:39
Kendahl
they just spoke English, but it has English subtitles.
00:52:41
Julian Contreras Jr
OK, so it was a weird switch up for you.
00:52:44
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:52:45
Julian Contreras Jr
OK.
00:52:45
Kendahl
So, um yeah, it was it was it was dubbed. um it So I have to admit, actually, that episode I watched with no audio. I was just reading the subtitles.
00:52:56
Kendahl
and so And so it was funny because in the subtitles it says English.
00:52:56
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh.
00:53:02
Kendahl
And then it says Korean.
00:53:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. Interesting.
00:53:04
Kendahl
So, yeah.
00:53:05
Julian Contreras Jr
Interesting. Yeah, because they when they actually let the VIPs play part of the game, which is basically clean up after hide and seek, I was like, wait, why are they taking their masks off?
00:53:11
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:53:13
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:53:17
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:53:17
Julian Contreras Jr
And why why do they look like that? like it's That's crazy.
00:53:21
Kendahl
I have to admit that was that was the height and seek was my was the most intense one so far.
00:53:21
Julian Contreras Jr
But then I got to understand.
00:53:26
Kendahl
That was good.
00:53:27
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I was watching that. So my wife hasn't watched any of them. she They were too grotesque and there was no point to them besides the violence. And yes, that's how it started.
00:53:35
Kendahl
Makes sense.
00:53:36
Julian Contreras Jr
But this story has gotten so good that I started season three and she was actually intrigued. She's like, oh, what's going on here?
00:53:43
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:53:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Like, this is well written. It's like, yeah, it's come a long ways from the shock value that it was when it first came out.
00:53:48
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:53:53
Kendahl
So I will tell you, ah not giving anything away, um there is a scene where they are in the United States, in L.A., at the end of 6, and you see...
00:54:07
Kendahl
um You actually see one of, you'll recognize her. she's She's done, she did a show called Fringe a few years back. She's done, geez, a couple other shows.
00:54:19
Kendahl
and She's actually playing the initiation game with somebody in an alleyway.
00:54:27
Julian Contreras Jr
Doc
00:54:28
Kendahl
um Yeah.
00:54:30
Julian Contreras Jr
G? Or is it a different game?
00:54:30
Kendahl
the
00:54:31
Julian Contreras Jr
Don't tell me.
00:54:31
Kendahl
No, no, no.
00:54:32
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:54:33
Kendahl
Throw the squares red, you know, red, green.
00:54:34
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, yeah. yeah
00:54:35
Kendahl
Yep. Yep.
00:54:36
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay, cool.
00:54:37
Julian Contreras Jr
All
00:54:37
Kendahl
and And she turns around and smacks the guy when she wins.
00:54:39
Kendahl
It's freaking awesome. and But yeah, you see it right then and there. So there' you definitely know at that point they're coming they're doing ah an American version. You're just like, oh, okay, here we go.
00:54:50
Julian Contreras Jr
right. So to finish this up in my little rant about this whole thing and this genre. So we got Squid Games in Call of Duty a little while back and we're like, okay, well, Call of Duty is mature.
00:54:58
Kendahl
Yeah,
00:55:01
Julian Contreras Jr
You can bring this in. It's kind of cool. Now it's in Fortnite, Kendall.
00:55:06
Kendahl
I know.
00:55:06
Julian Contreras Jr
There are Squid Games characters in Fortnite. It's crazy.
00:55:09
Kendahl
Yeah, I won't even talk about the times. my There's 10-year-olds that I teach, and they're like did you watch Squid Games? No. No. No, I'm not talking about that. Not talking about that.
00:55:18
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, come on, Mr.
00:55:19
Kendahl
Because I'm not even going to admit to it.
00:55:19
Julian Contreras Jr
T.
00:55:20
Kendahl
Yeah. but I'm going to admit to it. But um yeah. So when it comes down to it, like I i liked it. I can't say that I didn't like the season. I just didn't like the way it ended.
00:55:35
Kendahl
I didn't like the way it ended.
00:55:35
Julian Contreras Jr
All right. Fair, fair. I should finish it up today and I'll text you. It might be late for you, but.
00:55:40

I don't know if I can keep doing this just because it's you know there's a lot going on in our lives. There's a lot things a lot of things that that happen. And then things like the long walk come out and I'm like, we're going to talk about this. Let's do it.

00:59:50
Kendahl
