Julian Contreras Jr: Hey, welcome everyone to this is shut off turn on number 81. Can't believe we took the whole month of June off that was crazy.
Kendahl: I know.
Julian Contreras Jr: It happens so fast.
Kendahl: You know, I, I, this is Kendall over here, by the way.
Julian Contreras Jr: But
Kendahl: i think I, you know, I, it goes to the the fact that like, uh, I know when you and I were first chatting in like, end of May, 1st of June, I said, Oh, well just give me a second.
Kendahl: Cause it was like busy with school. Cause that's the end of the school year for me.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: And, the, like the long and short is I took on a responsibility at the end of the year that was, pretty extensive. I think I talked about it in the last episode, but it just it was so overwhelming in my in my like just everything like even my wife was like, Hey, you need to know that I totally understand and support you in your job. But this role that you've taken on is literally taking over everything of you right now.
Kendahl: Because i would come home and I was just a zombie because I was just, I was, i don't know.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: Did I talk about this in the last episode?
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, you said you had taken on a new responsibility and that it was going to be different and a challenge for you. Apparently it's a challenge for everyone.
Kendahl: Yeah. Well, I mean, the long and short is, is I think I've talked, I know I've talked about this before, so I'm a special education teacher.
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah
Kendahl: This happened to be a severe like autism room. So this is, this is students that have zero ability to talk. physical. i mean, literally just beat the shiz out of you on a daily basis, not on purpose. It's just, that's their communication. Right. And so you kind of have to endure a lot of physicality. There's a lot of movement.
Kendahl: had a kid that every five seconds, if everybody had their head turned away, he would bolt for the door and take off. And, you know, it's just, it was a lot. uh and and so yeah so i remember we were talking about this and i was like okay just hold up hold the phone for just a minute i'll be back in and then don't remember what happened it was just like one thing after the next things just kind of i think just in a way like rolling with the punches we were both a little busy and then all of a sudden i remember texting you the other day i was like hey i really want to do a uh like a session this this weekend
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. we We agreed that it was going to be the 4th of July, but we said, wait, we can do it. We can get a little time away. You're alone at your house. I'm pretty much alone at my house. So here we are.
Kendahl: Yeah. So happy 4th of July. if Yeah, I mean, if you're in the United States, this is a really big celebration for us.
Julian Contreras Jr: Oh yeah. Big two 50.
Kendahl: You know, there's... there's a a lot of things out there on different elements of everything. But the the truth is, is, you know, it's a, it's a, we're the baby of the world.
Kendahl: You know, the world is a very old place.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: And when it comes to countries, we are quite literally in the like infant level, maybe teenager size of, of years.
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah Hey, can we make a little pact right now that you and I will be here for 300?
Kendahl: Oh, geez. Yes. Yeah. Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Don't think about what age you'll be, but let's let's hit 300.
Kendahl: No.
Julian Contreras Jr: Let's get that perfect score, Kendall.
Kendahl: Hey, you know what? I mean, to get the, that's a perfect game. So, I mean, some of the best, some of the best people in the world have have celebrated anniversaries of this country.
Kendahl: John Adams.
Julian Contreras Jr: I vow to make it and have that be on my tombstone. I hit the perfect game. Yeah.
Kendahl: I made it perfect 300. Yeah.
Kendahl: Anyway, so, I mean, in all honesty, that's that's like 90% of where I've been. Because when you've, like, not the not the celebrating 250 thing, the coming off of being a teacher thing. I'm telling you, it is the biggest...
Kendahl: I'm trying to PG my words here. Mind melding moment that you have to go from being in this like, okay, how are my kids doing? Not my kids, those kids, you know, paying attention to their needs, making sure I've got everything set up, making sure I've got all my lessons in line to do what you want.
Kendahl: Wake up on Monday morning and do what you want.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Try to.
Kendahl: And, you know, there's a lot of people out there like, oh, you know, you know, teachers always get the summers off. I wish I was a teacher. No, you don't. No, you don't.
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah Wow.
Kendahl: These kids are feral.
Kendahl: But it is it's so it's kind of it's kind of a crazy thing. And on the other side, over here on the East Coast, Satan's butthole decided to sit over the entirety of it.
Kendahl: And so we're melting. And freaking, today is supposed to be 114 degrees.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: Yesterday was like 109 or 110. The day before that was 113. I don't know what's going on because I feel like hell didn't freeze over. it just decided to come straight up.
Julian Contreras Jr: Is this your, how many summers have you been there? Is this your second or third?
Kendahl: Seven.
Julian Contreras Jr: You have already been seven summers.
Kendahl: Seven.
Julian Contreras Jr: Is this the worst one?
Kendahl: This is the worst summer ever. And that like today, it's like 90% humidity with one hundred and I think it's 106 109 outside.
Julian Contreras Jr: Wow.
Kendahl: So that's where it drops. That's where we have what's called the indices. I'd never heard of heat indices until I moved out here. And that's why it's a freaking 114 degrees So...
Julian Contreras Jr: Wow. And you said all your 4th of July parades and everything got canceled because the heat.
Kendahl: so
Kendahl: Shut down. Yeah. Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Wow.
Kendahl: Everything around here is, is basically canceled. And so, like, so my wife's job, what she does is, is, uh, you know, to help prepare for stuff like this.
Kendahl: So she has to go out and do, there's still, nobody's canceling fireworks. Like everybody's doing fireworks. Cause it's supposed to be cooler by like 10 o'clock. Right. And it's, you know, it gets dark here about nine 30, 10. So everybody's hoping to have those, but,
Kendahl: i was telling you I was telling you yesterday when we were talking, my AC went out again. Like all the times in the world.
Julian Contreras Jr: Mm-hmm. Yes, you did. 86 in the house is what you said.
Kendahl: Yes, yes. it's I think it's 81 right now right in my house. and i'm Sorry, that that clunk was my phone. I'm trying to pull it up. It says it's 82. It is 82 degrees in my house.
Kendahl: so And I have the AC running right now, but I have to run it in these like spurts because otherwise it it gets stuck in this rut and it doesn't turn back on. So, you know.
Julian Contreras Jr: Wow.
Kendahl: yeah
Julian Contreras Jr: Crazy.
Kendahl: I know, right? But
Julian Contreras Jr: All right. let Let's do a little bit of catch up on some entertainment. Did you do anything besides work and melt?
Kendahl: You know, i i started playing a lot of video games over the last couple of weeks.
Julian Contreras Jr: All right. Not Fortnite, though.
Julian Contreras Jr: I haven't seen you on there.
Kendahl: I just I can't I just can't I don't I can't do it man I just i don't know what it is but okay so I'm not gonna brag but I got on I got on Call of Duty the other day all right and if y'all know it has skill based matchmaking I haven't played in like a fortnight haha okay
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah
Julian Contreras Jr: That's good. Look at you go.
Kendahl: good segue there, right? So I hadn't played in forever. So my skill-based matchmaking is like, who the frick are you? So it throws me in these lobbies. Dude, I went 42 and 10 on my first game in like, I don't know how many months.
Julian Contreras Jr: Nice.
Kendahl: It was stupid. And I was like, oh,
Julian Contreras Jr: and then instantly get shot back into the big lobbies.
Kendahl: Oh, yeah. And then I got into those, like, stupid, crazy geyser 1000 prestige. You're like, what are you doing? Because you obviously haven't left your room in far too long.
Julian Contreras Jr: Hey, they get paid for it. They get paid for it man.
Kendahl: I know. Anyway, so, uh, playing some video games, watching some TV. I'm, Y'all know I'm a sci-fi nerd. So Stargate was supposed to come up with a new series coming out on Prime Video next year.
Kendahl: So I told myself, all right, I'm going watch every Stargate episode between now and then. So you have to kind of start because there's like forever seasons of the original Stargate series.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: And then there's Stargate Atlantis, which has like seven or eight seasons. And then you've got Stargate Universe, which had like three seasons. So there's a lot of episodes. I think there's like, I can't even remember. I don't want to throw a number out there.
Kendahl: And i was like, right.
Julian Contreras Jr: Sounds like a tall order.
Kendahl: So i was like, okay, I'm going to start from the beginning. So I did. Well, they canceled that series that was supposed to be coming out next year. But I was like, no, I'm dedicated. I'm like seven seasons in on the one. So, so I've i've been watching that.
Kendahl: So, and then i well, oh, and I told you I'm going to Ireland.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yes, you did. haven't figured out when and why, but we're going to get to that. I promise.
Kendahl: Yeah. So I've been prepping for that because there's a lot of things that go into, you know, if you've ever been overseas, if you're overseas coming the United States, you know, too. You know, there's a lot of work that goes into traveling outside the United States to make sure you don't get caught at the border.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: but it But how about you?
Julian Contreras Jr: Check your P's and Q's.
Kendahl: have you been watching anything?
Julian Contreras Jr: Yes. So of course we took the whole month of June off. So that was a lot of stuff. We, the NHL playoffs, they finished.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Congratulations to the Carolina hurricanes. That was an awesome end of the season.
Kendahl: hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: Can't wait for the next one to start when I'm actually involved all the way.
Kendahl: Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: Right after that ended, we saw the crazy NBA finals where New York finally did it after.
Kendahl: Oh, yeah, yeah. The next. Oh, yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, yeah.
Kendahl: Absolutely.
Julian Contreras Jr: I didn't know if you had picked up on the NBA at all.
Kendahl: Yeah. I got you. i mean, i I'm not an NBA fan. i don't watch I don't watch basketball at all. But, I mean, you can't you can't ignore the Knicks winning. I mean, just who who knew?
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: So then along with the sports world, of course, now we're right in the middle of the World Cup.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: We made it through all the group stage games.
Kendahl: Yep.
Julian Contreras Jr: Actually, earlier today was the first round of 16 where Canada was going against Morocco.
Kendahl: Yep.
Julian Contreras Jr: That's what it was. Almost forgot there for a second.
Kendahl: Yeah. The United States is playing.
Julian Contreras Jr: Monday night.
Kendahl: yeah who are they playing Bella? Is it? Is a Belarus? No. Who they playing?
Julian Contreras Jr: No, I think it's Belgium, but I could be wrong.
Kendahl: Well, yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: I know France is on later tonight, and that's all I know.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: But of course, I'm a huge sports guy, so though those are always on my TV. I did start the Traders Canada earlier this morning.
Kendahl: Okay, okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: So now I have three seasons of Canadian Traders to watch. So happy for that. But the big, big news that we went to is right before Father's Day. Happy Father's Day, by the way. I think I texted you that day.
Kendahl: You did. You did.
Julian Contreras Jr: But we finally, after months and months of waiting, went to go see Back to the Future of the musical.
Kendahl: that's right. Yeah. Oh, you texted me that too. Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yes. And as as big as Back to the Future fans as both of you and I are, it was incredible.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Kendall absolutely loved it. The music was great. The things they changed a little bit from the movie to make it work on stage was awesome. And there wasn't like a cardboard cutout car. It was an actual DeLorean on stage.
Kendahl: That's awesome.
Julian Contreras Jr: For my seats, it looked full size. It might have been scaled down just a bit. But...
Kendahl: To make you feel old, though, i saw this the other day. if they film If they filmed Back the Future today, it'd be like they were going back to 1995 or something like that. And I was like, you know what? Screw you, Internet. I don't need to hear this.
Kendahl: yeah Because it was. was 1985.
Julian Contreras Jr: h
Kendahl: And he goes back in time to 1955, 30 years.
Julian Contreras Jr: 1955. 30 years. Yeah.
Kendahl: So I'm like, I don't need to hear you, Internet.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: You're good. Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: I don't need to hear it. So if it ever comes to your town or you're going around, you're on vacation, and you see Back to the Future of musical is available and has tickets, I strongly recommend you go see it.
Julian Contreras Jr: I had a lot of fun.
Kendahl: okay
Julian Contreras Jr: But other than all the sports and all that, just been a lot of work. And we don't talk about work here. We just had a couple big projects. We got a really big project coming up. So, but it shouldn't affect me to where I can't be here.
Julian Contreras Jr: So we're going to talk about your vacation next. And it's news to me. I want to know how long you're going to be gone for.
Kendahl: Okay, so so it's my wife and I's 25th anniversary this year.
Julian Contreras Jr: Nice. Very nice.
Kendahl: And we... So back during COVID, it was our 20th anniversary. And we wanted to go to We wanted to go to Puerto Rico. Well, it was right in the midst of COVID and we had planned it prior to COVID, right?
Kendahl: So this is like 2019 that we were like, okay, hey, we've got a year and a half before our 20th anniversary. What do you want to do? and I was like, all right, well, let's start planning. So then January of 2020, not even joking you, 2021 was our 20th anniversary.
Kendahl: And so we're like, you know what? Let's go online and look. Remember, January of 2020. And so we we buy the tickets and we get we get the plane tickets, we get the hotels, we get all the reservations done to go to Puerto Rico for 10 days.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yep.
Kendahl: And we're like, this going to be awesome. And two months later, the whole world shuts down. So we hang on to our tickets, we hang on to everything.
Julian Contreras Jr: yep
Kendahl: And we're like, you know what? Lucky enough, we had bought insurance on everything because if you're going to spend a few thousand dollars for everything, you're going to put insurance on it, right?
Kendahl: Just in case. So we did.
Julian Contreras Jr: yep
Kendahl: And, you know, by the time 21 came around, things were still not open at the level we wanted to. Puerto Rico was still not doing a lot of the stuff. And we're like, you know what?
Kendahl: Let's just get it all back. So we did. So here we are five years later and my wife and I are like, okay, this is the 25th. Like this is a big one. We're a quarter century into this thing. We need to do something big. And a friend of hers at work is his side deal is to do travel stuff for the, for the American government, like for, you know, embassies and just all kinds of different stuff. And he says, you know, the best place to go is like Ireland.
Kendahl: And the UK and other places in the UK, because it's an easy transition for most Americans. And it's also like just some of the most beautiful country you'll ever be to. So, and he's like, just do it. So we started looking into it and sure enough, I mean, we were able, the funny thing is we did this, months and months ago.
Kendahl: And so before all the gas prices started exploding and other stuff started exploding, we, we bought our tickets. We got, we got round trip tickets and our car rental under two grand.
Julian Contreras Jr: Wow.
Kendahl: And we're gone for 10 days.
Julian Contreras Jr: That's going be super cool.
Kendahl: So, yeah, im I mean, I'm excited. So so we're going to fly out. This is the worst. We're flying out tomorrow at 1030 at night.
Kendahl: And so the thing is, Ireland is five hours ahead of us right now. So at that point, you got to think about it. It's, oh, no. So I told you 7 a.m. And I realized after that, I'm like, no, that's wrong. It's we're going to get there 7 a.m. our time.
Kendahl: It's going to be like 11 noon their time. So, so we're, uh, so we're going to just like gung ho it.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.
Kendahl: So we decided that we're going to try to sleep on the plane. And cause we got a straight shot. It's like a six and hour six hours and like 45 minutes or six hours and 55 minutes, something like that. Just shy of seven.
Kendahl: And we're going to land. We're going to get our stuff together. We have a car we're to throw it in the back and we're going to start driving around town and we're going to like, you know, get ourselves all hyped up on Red Bulls and something and just enjoy the day and then crash.
Julian Contreras Jr: Try to acclimate real fast. Okay.
Kendahl: Yeah. And then just kind of crash, you know?
Julian Contreras Jr: I like it. Sounds like a good plan. I hope it works out for you.
Kendahl: Yeah. I mean, it's going to be neat. We're going, we're going all the way to the East coast or I'm sorry, all the way, all the way to the West coast of Ireland, which is insane. That seems like it's crazy. We're going West coast, East coast from Ireland.
Kendahl: That's, that's a two hours and 45 minute drive.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: That's it. It's if you go to the furthest distance, it's like three hours and 40 minutes.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: So it's not that bad.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. Those are some of the funny stories hearing and people come over for the World Cup to watch their teams play. Like, well, how far away is the stadium? Can't be that far. We could probably just walk it. Like, no, it's it's a three-hour drive.
Julian Contreras Jr: Like, well, like just like you said, my country from that side to that side is three hours.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. Ours is forever.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: But those are funny stories.
Kendahl: Yeah. So, yeah, it'll be so it's good. We're excited. We're going fun. And the we have we have a really good friend here, kind of like family friend that's going to watch our younger kids for us.
Kendahl: So it's be good. Plus, my older kids are home. So, you know, it's all this fun stuff.
Julian Contreras Jr: Nice. Can't wait to see some photos from that.
Kendahl: But.
Julian Contreras Jr: in the
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Congratulations. We're trying to figure out something for our 20th. Hopefully nothing like your 20th happens again for us, but we kind of want something all inclusive just so we can just pay and we can stay.
Kendahl: yeah
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: She loves beaches. So just chilling on a beach is relaxing for the both of us, especially watch a movie on your phone.
Kendahl: Dude, I mean, Puerto Rico.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: Don't even need passports. Just just go. Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. I really would like to go to Ireland or Scotland or something like that, you know, but i I don't know if I could fly that long.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: I went to Hawaii the one time and I think that might have been my max, but maybe not because people tell me planes are bigger.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Kendahl: How far?
Kendahl: Oh, this one's massive.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: This one's massive. it's It's like eight... I don't even know how many seats across. It's like eight or nine seats across. It's super big.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: It's just massive, big old, like, freaking huge plane.
Julian Contreras Jr: So...
Julian Contreras Jr: But we'll start planning. We'll try to figure something out and hopefully join your stories.
Kendahl: Yeah. Oh, I forgot to tell you. I did go see Obsession. Finally.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yes, you did. No, you told me.
Kendahl: I did. So...
Julian Contreras Jr: let's Let's jump right into that because I want your take on that because you hadn't seen it before.
Kendahl: I hadn't.
Julian Contreras Jr: And of course, it's available at home. So I had a friend come over to my house and we watched it on my big TV theater sound in the dark.
Kendahl: Yep, yep, yep.
Kendahl: Nice.
Julian Contreras Jr: No lights were allowed on.
Kendahl: Nice.
Julian Contreras Jr: So go ahead.
Kendahl: i All right, i i just I had my reservations to go see this. So I'll start with my final take. My final take on this film is it's good.
Kendahl: It scared the crap out of me. it it just It hits this unnerving part of your brain going, that's supposed to not happen. So, I mean, I get it. you know It's this whole the whole idea someone being able to just wish for what they want.
Kendahl: But I'm telling you, like, it' it's good. It's unnerving. I probably won't watch it for a while. I'm not that. That's just it's hard for me to watch those kind of films because I'm just I'm into horror, but not as much as you.
Kendahl: And if you know, it is.
Julian Contreras Jr: That's my comfort zone.
Kendahl: And if you of our listeners, I get it. We love you guys, too. I've had a lot of good recommendations, especially from your brother. And so I get it. You know, there are good movies, but this is just not in my wheelhouse of norm.
Kendahl: That being said, my Instagram is filled with nothing but obsession videos because obviously I'm I enjoyed it because I've looked up some stuff.
Kendahl: So I told you I was going come with some interesting tidbits. Right. So if if you have seen this movie,
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.
Kendahl: then you know you'll you'll get some of these references. If you have not seen this movie, I'm going to try to be as spoiler-free as possible. because i think I think it's relative because this is one of those films that everybody is slowly still trying to see.
Kendahl: and i think for good reason. right i mean it's It's one of those, as it continues to just be... you know, become bigger and bigger and bigger. I think there's a lot of people that are recognizing how good this film is.
Kendahl: Right. So anyhow, so I think everybody kind of knows this, right? It's, it's Curry Baker. He's our Barker. I'm sorry. star.
Kendahl: Uh, what is what's this, what is this one YouTube channel called?
Julian Contreras Jr: I don't know if on YouTube, I know I'm on Instagram.
Kendahl: Yeah, I'm trying to remember what his show was called. But anyway, so he has a lot of Instagram shorts. Really funny guy. a lot of really good stuff. And so he he is the voice behind the customer service from One Wish Willow when Bear ends up calling.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yep.
Kendahl: Did you know that?
Julian Contreras Jr: Yes, I did. i did know that.
Kendahl: Okay. So a couple of other funny things. So when I there's there's some alternate endings. Do you know about the alternate endings and the alternate scenes?
Julian Contreras Jr: Not yet. I haven't gotten into those. I was hoping they were going to be available on this version that was sold on Apple, but a lot of them are still in the works.
Kendahl: Yeah, so I guess it's coming later. My my I was I was reading it's July 17. is is when it's supposed to be released. It's July 17th.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, i I really hope I don't have to buy the movie again, but I am not opposed to the idea if I have to.
Kendahl: All right. All right. in So in in the alt one of the alternate versions, there is an opportunity that Nikki has to end everything, and she takes it.
Kendahl: Then there's also a, I don't know if it's an alternate ending or if it was like a, a one of those they filmed and decided not to go through with where Bear also had the the same option and took it.
Julian Contreras Jr: beart technically Bear had the option the entire time and he he's just the bad guy his Instagram channel is that's a bad idea I just want to get that out yeah
Kendahl: That's a bad idea. Yeah, that's what it is. so the, the other crazy part about this film, the, all the stars I've, I've actually looked up like their, how much they all got paid to do this film. And it's in like, like, I'm not being mean, but it's like wages that are just so minimal.
Kendahl: We're talking like tens of thousands of dollars to finish this film.
Julian Contreras Jr: Well, yeah.
Kendahl: So,
Julian Contreras Jr: I mean, we talked about this and like, that's the risk you run with a movie like this. First time director, crazy idea. It's in the horror genre. All those things like usually don't add up to be a good thing.
Kendahl: Right.
Julian Contreras Jr: And so you take the chance. you're like, oh yeah, that sounds like a really good idea. I'll take your $37,000. I'll work on your movie for two to what, three weeks. If you put it in that timeframe, $37,000 for three weeks work,
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.
Kendahl: Yeah, it seems reasonable.
Julian Contreras Jr: Right.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: Like i was
Julian Contreras Jr: It becomes this juggernaut and makes how many millions? for Almost 400 million or over that now.
Kendahl: Yeah, it's it's expected to hit the the half a billion dollar mark at some point soon.
Julian Contreras Jr: i mean, that's just like the lottery ticket you didn't buy.
Kendahl: So, well, and so this is where it's interesting.
Julian Contreras Jr: Right?
Kendahl: Like one of the makeup artists was talking about this film or one of the makeup artists on this film was talking about how she only got paid $3,000. It was like three or Man, that's that's that's crazy to me and so there's kind of this I guess, watch on what's he going to do to repay these people? Because I get it. like i get that they only took this, but I feel like they should still get a part of this pot because it's because of them this film is doing so well. It's his idea.
Kendahl: i get it. He did the directing. I get it. I'm not dismissing anything that he did. But, I mean, holy heck. Just...
Julian Contreras Jr: he He directed it and wrote it.
Kendahl: Right. And so I just feel like he needs to give back just a little bit.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay, well, i do you have a total...
Kendahl: but
Julian Contreras Jr: Here's here's a me taking Curry's side, and maybe. How much of that does Curry get? And how much is Blumhouse taking?
Kendahl: Oh, okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: You know?
Kendahl: Oh, yeah. Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: Right?
Kendahl: Let's, let's, let's look.
Julian Contreras Jr: to See, there's... I mean, I'm all for everyone getting what they make on a huge juggernaut movie. I don't know what a makeup artist makes on like a Marvel type movie that has a $400,000 or $4 billion dollar budget.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: And it has to make that money back. I don't know those numbers. So in comparison...
Kendahl: So it, so it says right now, it says that he is expected to take away about $4 million dollars from this.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.
Kendahl: So, he's expected to take away about 4 million. It was done over on total budget of 750,000. it is, see.
Kendahl: Yeah. I'm trying to find like anything that talks more in depth about like what he's actually walking away with it from. It says some people are estimating that he is going to be paid roughly $10 million overall when it's all said and done.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: Because he gets so much for the sales of like the movie and rentals and then also the box office and all that. So yeah, i mean like you said, i mean they're going to make a lot of money from this, the the production company. They're going a lot more money out of this than anybody else.
Kendahl: But... Anyway, all right. So, but it's it's really good. Like, i I've watched a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff. some of the Some of the stuff is like watching how they produced, especially the scene, you know, the famous car scene with Nikki and Bear and their friend.
Julian Contreras Jr: Sarah?
Kendahl: being Making that scene look so viscerally... real And then at the same time, watching the production going, that's what they use to make the glass. That's what they use to make the blood.
Kendahl: That's what they use to make the the face or lack thereof.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: And you kind of go for seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Dang, they did a good job.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: That's as good. So, hats off to that show. If you haven't seen it, go see it. If you're not liking the horror genre, here's the thing. My daughter and I are not big horror film fans. We don't like a lot of horror movies.
Kendahl: We both walked away kind of with this Huh. After the film. But at the same time, it was it was thought provoking. Like we had a lot of conversations, especially like where you know, where was the other Nikki this whole time? Was she really there?
Kendahl: Was she spiritually like, you know, somewhere else or whatever? Like the thoughts are like purgatory type thing.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. I mean,
Kendahl: I guess she in that situation because there's times where, you know, Nikki comes back. And then it's also like, is this film more about how greed is the worst actual thing out there? Because we, you know, Bear had the chance.
Kendahl: He's like, oh do you want to rescind your wish? He's like, uh, well, well, no. it's like, oh, so you are greedy.
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah i mean he wanted to adjust it.
Kendahl: Right. Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: But then he's like, well, we don't really do that.
Kendahl: right yeah
Julian Contreras Jr: And then he's like, okay, yeah, then I would like to cancel. He's like, well, we don't do that either. He's like, what? Why did you, why did you offer at the beginning?
Kendahl: Well, so in the conversation with with with Barker, one of the things I said was, one of the things he said is is he goes, well, maybe it's one of those, his first answer changed the second answer.
Kendahl: And was like, oh, okay. I can see that.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, could have been. But along those lines of that exact same scene where you're saying, where was Nikki the whole time?
Kendahl: Anyway.
Julian Contreras Jr: He says, do you want to talk to her? And like she starts screaming in the background. So he had access to the real Nikki somewhere.
Kendahl: Mm-hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: Right.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: Right. So that's what i said. Where was she? So, yeah, it's I mean, it's interesting. It's all interesting. But OK, so along the same lines, you reached out to me. He's like, dude, you have to see this movie.
Kendahl: So you said your actual text was, yo,
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay. right. So we're, we're done with obsession.
Kendahl: let's let's move on from.
Julian Contreras Jr: Please go see it.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: It's pretty awesome.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: I absolutely love it. I've seen it two, three, four times now. Kendall seen it once, not his bag, but he still liked it.
Kendahl: I did.
Julian Contreras Jr: That's where we're going with it.
Kendahl: i liked it. Okay, so on a rating scale, I would give it a 7.5, verging 8. So I'd still give it, I feel like I'd still give it a good rating.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay. right.
Julian Contreras Jr: it's It's a solid nine for me. It was right up there.
Julian Contreras Jr: it made me it made me laugh at some parts I shouldn't be laughing at. It made you think about some things. It did, in quoting my friend who came over, did give a little bit of goosebumps at some points, like if you weren't prepared for it.
Kendahl: Yeah. Oh, my last little tidbit trivia.
Kendahl: The music store that they film in for that one is the same music store they filmed in Wayne's World.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yes, they did.
Kendahl: I didn't know that. And I was watching something the other day and I was like, oh, that's really cool. So for all of you.
Julian Contreras Jr: Another little fun fact before we move on. The bar that they go to when they go to get shots at the beginning, the white wall, the submarine tile, or the subway tile, what's the name of the restaurant?
Kendahl: Yeah.
Kendahl: huh.
Julian Contreras Jr: Or the bar?
Kendahl: I don't remember now.
Julian Contreras Jr: It's Barker's. Barker's.
Kendahl: oh yeah Oh, you know what's so funny? I thought that. I was like, I want, I'm like, I'm like, is it isn't that the director's name?
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah hilarious anyway okay let's move on please go and see a session uh it's a great movie but yes last night i did text you because i had watched i started watching this movie and i missed it in theaters and i'm not sure exactly why must have been time or something but i finally hbo max has lee cronin's the mummy
Kendahl: That's funny. Yeah, that's good.
Kendahl: Yep.
Kendahl: no
Kendahl: Yes, very clear. Lee Cronin's.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, yeah, we'll get to that story because I do want to ask questions answered.
Kendahl: Dope. Dope.
Julian Contreras Jr: I got about 53 minutes into this thing and something happened on the screen and I paused it to text. I was like, yo, you have got to see this movie.
Kendahl: Okay, hold on. I'm going to make sure my volume's off because I'm going to pull this up about where you're at and talking about. And that way I can like, be like oh, I know what you're talking about. Okay, so... Here's the funny thing, people.
Kendahl: You know... Okay, do you remember you remember back in the day, the movie jungled the Jungle to Jungle?
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, with Tim Allen?
Kendahl: Okay. Yeah, yeah, right.
Julian Contreras Jr: No.
Kendahl: Yeah, yeah, it was Tim Allen.
Julian Contreras Jr: that right? OK.
Kendahl: Yep. Okay, so... there There was another movie that came out that was a total rip-off of that movie.
Kendahl: to try to get people to to rent their stupid ripoff, like, level C studio version of Jungle to Jungle, right?
Julian Contreras Jr: OK.
Kendahl: And people fell for it. And what's really funny is that when people fell for it, it it like it helped produce this situation where people gave money to the wrong people, right?
Kendahl: So...
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay. Okay.
Kendahl: I, I, I'm going through last night you're like, Hey, I need you to go rent the mummy. So I go and I type in the mummy. Well, the first one that comes up is obviously, uh, what's his names? The mummy from the 1990s. And I was like, not the movie I'm looking for.
Kendahl: So then I go to the next one and the descriptor on it, I i have to read you the descriptor on this thing because you will understand. I was like, OK, is this the right one? It's like, oh, yeah, this is the right one. So sorry, I'm trying to pull this detail up and no, I don't want to watch it.
Kendahl: It's garbage. It's freaking garbage. So
Julian Contreras Jr: You already did.
Kendahl: I'm looking it up and it's called the mummy. Okay. Now here's the thing. It is an, an Egyptologist accidentally unleashes a 5,000 year old mummy.
Kendahl: that is, has a vengeful spirit and possesses a teenage daughter forcing his family.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay. Roughly the same.
Kendahl: Right. So I was like, Oh, okay. Forces his family to race against this ancient magic, but and And I'm like, oh, just to basically to save her. Oh, sure.
Kendahl: Sounds like it. I'm like, yeah, okay. No, people. This first 15 minutes of this film, there's not a word spoken. I was like, what what in the world is he?
Kendahl: You're telling me it's
Julian Contreras Jr: And you're thinking I'm the one recommending this to you. Like...
Kendahl: And I'm like, what is this garbage? I'm like, I didn't watch this for a reason. Oh, this is stupid. And it goes nowhere. where And I'm like, okay. I start like scrolling through. I'm like, what what is this film? And and then it hits me.
Kendahl: Oh, I got the wrong one.
Julian Contreras Jr: So my question to you is, did you sit there and watch the entire movie before you realized that's not what I was talking about?
Kendahl: No, I got about 25, 30 minutes into it, and I was like, this is the dumbest piece of insert expletive ever. what is there's no There's no dialogue.
Kendahl: What is garbage? And like this guy kept going into like psychotropic, weird moments where he'd grab this Egyptian doll, and and all of a sudden he's like transporting himself, and this 5,000-year-old mummy thing is talking to him, and then it was like a jump scare. His daughter would walk in the room.
Kendahl: And I was like, okay, what is this garbage? And I just, I was like, nope, nope. This is not it. It's stupid. It's stupid. this is And it it labels itself as rated R in horror. yeah i Out of 35 minutes, there was no there's no horror.
Kendahl: there There was no violence. There was no language. There was like a partial bit of nudity in the very beginning, but it's not even that. And I was like, what?
Kendahl: So then I go and I rent Lee Cronin's The Mummy. Very much different film, especially in the first 10 minutes.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yes. Oh, yeah.
Kendahl: And if you don't know what we're talking about in the first 10 minutes, it's it's very suddenly all of all of a sudden. Oh, yeah, it's definitely a horror film. So, OK,
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, very, very graphic.
Julian Contreras Jr: But did you like that version?
Kendahl: so okay so
Kendahl: it's still not my It's still not down my road of like interest, but I did watch it because I wanted to have content for the show. And i liked it.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.
Kendahl: I mean, it wasn't great. I'm going to say it's like a five on my book, right? It's like I'll never watch it again, ever.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.
Kendahl: i It would be hard-pressed for me to find a reason to watch this again. But i can see why you liked it. And so my question to you is is, what was the scene that you saw that you're like, yo, you've got to watch this? What?
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay, so. If y'all haven't seen Lee Cronin's The Mummy, go ahead and pause it right now. It's on HBO Max. Make sure you rent the right one if you're just going to rent it. so I just can't not talk about this scene because it's crazy.
Julian Contreras Jr: So the daughter gets kidnapped. They find her eight years later. Whatever, she's back. She looks the way she does, all kind of coming back from being a mummified, like essentially.
Kendahl: Yep.
Julian Contreras Jr: And her toenails. are all out of whack. Just, you know what I'm saying?
Kendahl: Right.
Julian Contreras Jr: Toenails.
Kendahl: Right.
Julian Contreras Jr: And so the mom is down there clicking them. trying to cut them off. She gets a little smaller one and then she goes, moves to the next one. And she, that one snaps and goes flying across the room.
Julian Contreras Jr: Then, then we get to the big toe.
Kendahl: I know exactly what I'm about. Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: and hear She is struggling to push this thing. And the way the foot and the toe moved, I was like, Oh, she's just going to rip this nail off. And like, I don't know, maybe the girl won't feel pain or something. And then she'll realize something's wrong.
Julian Contreras Jr: No. No, Kendall. She clips his toe and not only does it come off, but halfway up her shin does the skin come off.
Kendahl: it reminded me of one of those moments when someone's like on a on a uh you know on like a hangnail you're like oh hangnail and you rip it back and you take some skin and you're like
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. What was that?
Kendahl: dang it who yeah right
Julian Contreras Jr: Like a the angry tree friends. They did that. Like a little hang up, rip their arm.
Kendahl: yeah
Julian Contreras Jr: It was exactly like that, but on like a, live action and i would
Kendahl: i literally I literally had that moment and i was like, oh! and I started laughing because that's exactly what I was thinking.
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah because the mom said exactly what i had said in my own house and then it goes off from there it gets a little bit more gross and i i liked it it was good i should have seen it in theaters i think i would have liked it a little bit more on the big screen but it's a good watch i'm not saying you're gonna go out and buy it like obsession
Kendahl: Yeah. Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: But I had a good time.
Kendahl: my My favorite scene of that whole film is when they're driving up and they see the coyotes for the first time and the kid says the F word and she goes, you said the F word, but she says it.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: Yeah,
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. Those coyotes are cool. And I just wish there were a little bit more. i kind of got lost on the coyotes. Because they were there.
Kendahl: yeah I don't know.
Julian Contreras Jr: They showed them. And then something about... They're still here. And then they show up just to eat something. And I was like, wait, is that instead it?
Kendahl: It's something.
Julian Contreras Jr: But I loved...
Kendahl: Yeah, I don't know.
Julian Contreras Jr: but that i loved
Kendahl: I don't know. Like, the yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: The effects were great. That toenail scene was crazy ridiculous. I did get kind of lost with the younger daughter with her teeth. She was, the teeth were wiggling.
Julian Contreras Jr: She said she might lose it. And then they looked weird. And then when she got like kind of possessed, they got more, more weird looking.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: And then they got to the scene in the car and then her teeth were fine. I was like, oh, they forgot. They forgot to put that in.
Kendahl: Yeah, there were there were definitely a few like elements that I feel like they were trying to go somewhere with it. That being one, and then like the coyote thing kind of threw me off because was like this is like, are they only here for that one moment that then they just kind of they never talk about it? And then i just i feel like...
Kendahl: Also kind of the the the dad main character, like his whole job, it's a part of everything, but also it has nothing to do with anything. And so it's kind of like, then why?
Kendahl: you know what mean? i don't know.
Julian Contreras Jr: it So it gave him access to the professor towards the end.
Kendahl: Yeah, I mean, and that's only thing I can think of, which goes back to the leg tear part.
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah exactly
Kendahl: But still, like, I don't know I felt like there was a few elements that they... It was like they were trying to introduce something and then it didn't go right. And so they're like, i forget it. Let's just keep the rest of the scene that we wrote.
Kendahl: But I mean, it's it's okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah yeah i had a lot of fun i give it about a seven for the fun factor like i said i probably won't buy it but
Kendahl: It's not bad.
Kendahl: I mean... i My gosh, the the special effects in this are really good. And you can tell they use some practical effects and then some CGI. And so, definitely some...
Kendahl: like really good stuff in there. But also, you know, i'll as someone for me, that's little hard. There's a little like kind of I don't want to call it demonic, but there's like this this element of like possession in there that I think can throw some people off.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay. Yeah.
Kendahl: But that was the other thing, too.
Julian Contreras Jr: lot of people don't like that.
Kendahl: Yeah, that was the other thing, too, that it was like, that was the like, you kind of talked about with the teeth with the little girl. But like, there was like this possession situation. And then you could see something was happening to the little girl. And then it literally drops off and doesn't say anything or have anything for like 15 more minutes.
Kendahl: And you're like, what? That girl was hanging up in the middle of the wall. What what happened to her? And it doesn't go back to it. So, yes.
Julian Contreras Jr: No, it did get a little long in the tooth. Like towards the end, i was like, wait, why is this scene in here? But still had a lot of fun.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: Slow delivery options. Oh, yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Perfect. All right. I want to finish up this episode by something everyone's probably tuning in and being like, well, where's their opinion on this big blockbuster?
Kendahl: yeah
Julian Contreras Jr: And I'm reluctant to see it because I don't want to add more to the hate. That's not my style. If you've been listening for 81 episodes, you know, it takes a lot for me to actually hate a movie, let alone just talk crap on it like crazy.
Kendahl: Yeah. Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: But apparently that's exactly what's happening to this year's DC Supergirl.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: I know you haven't seen it.
Kendahl: I know.
Julian Contreras Jr: I haven't seen it
Kendahl: i did. I had all the intents to go see it. Like, honestly, my wife and I were both... We watched the preview, and she's like, oh, I love that they're they're not making this some big-boob, small-hipped, like, you know, basically slutty-looking girl with a cape on that can just beat the crap out of everybody. Because that's kind of what they do. I mean, in all honesty, they they they tend to put this...
Kendahl: beautiful person on TV or on a, on, on the big screen. That's just voluptuous. And everything is about the sex rather than this is just a really cool character.
Kendahl: And, you know, and she saw the super girl preview and she's like, I love that.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.
Kendahl: They took this like average looking girl. And she looks like she's kind of rowdy, which is fun. And I think this would be something interesting to go see. And so we we literally did. We went to go.
Kendahl: We were going to watch it. And then I'll tell you, it's exactly what you're talking about. We saw a on YouTube, there's just there's a channel called WatchMojo. And it did a, why did this film bomb?
Kendahl: And she's like, oh let's just watch that. And all of a sudden, Every one of the reviews that were going negative made sense. And so i I didn't go see it because of that.
Kendahl: She didn't want to go see it either. And I think that's kind of in the same boat where you're at.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. Yeah.
Kendahl: There's just been so much negative press on this that it's like, I don't. I like superhero movies. There's not a single superhero movie I have ever seen that I walked out or I i rented or I bought and I went, I wish I had never watched that.
Kendahl: Never once. Even the like bombshell movies. Even the like freaking The Incredible Hulk from, what was it, freaking 2004 or whatever that everybody hated on that was done by...
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.
Kendahl: I'm trying to remember who it was.
Julian Contreras Jr: That's the Edward Norton one, right? Okay.
Kendahl: Yeah, yeah. I loved it. i loved it.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.
Kendahl: I loved those films. I liked that. i I have every one of them. I have every... The only superhero film that I've ever went, yeah, I'm not finishing it, is the Marvels movie.
Kendahl: That's the only one that I've tried and I haven't finished it. And it wasn't because, oh this is terrible. It was just... I didn't want to spend the time to watch it because it just wasn't entertaining me.
Kendahl: And that's that's probably the only time that's happened. And so I had the same thing as you. It's to be hard pressed for me to find something bad in a movie like this. But with such negative press that's been coming out of this, I just didn't feel like I wanted to.
Kendahl: I'd rather wait and watch it on my own time, my own time when I have a free extra minute. You know what i mean?
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. So are you a big fan of the Superman that just came out last year or two years ago where she had the cameo?
Kendahl: i I liked that film. I liked it.
Julian Contreras Jr: See, I like that one as well. And then apparently our opinion on that, liking it, isn't in the popular one because apparently that movie wasn't good.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: And i was like, well, that's news to me because I enjoyed myself.
Kendahl: Yeah, I mean, ay i mean it did have a really good like Rotten Tomatoes score. I think it was like 84, 85%. The Superman. But the Supergirl has like a 52% or something like that.
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah
Kendahl: I mean, it's...
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah don't know so that's why we haven't seen it we don't want to add to any negativity least that's my opinion I'll probably see it judging by the way it's going it'll be out of theaters next week and then they'll throw it on HBO Max by October probably maybe before that
Kendahl: it's And it still keeps going lower. So...
Kendahl: Yeah. Yeah.
Kendahl: Yeah, probably. i And it seems like the biggest hang-up that a lot of people have in this is that they just don't like the like the blase a Supergirl persona.
Kendahl: that she's you know She's just this bratty kid that's frustrated with you know the way things are going on, and especially the situation that happens with her dog, which is like the main storyline of trying to figure out how to save her dog.
Kendahl: And...
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: And I think for many people, they feel like the storyline was driven around her and Crypto. And yet Crypto isn't a big part of this film. And I and i almost wonder if some of that plays into it.
Kendahl: Because, you know, they they advertise this movie originally, originally being about Supergirl and her dog Crypto. And he's not really in this film very much.
Kendahl: you know And even though the whole film is about him by all technicality, he's not really in it. you know
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay. All right. That's why we haven't seen the blockbuster and we're going to wrap this episode up. I'm going to see something in the next few weeks.
Julian Contreras Jr: I'm not sure what's coming out, but I'm guarantee I'll see something.
Kendahl: Oh, i you know, I did i did watch a A Dog's Journey the other day.
Julian Contreras Jr: In my...
Kendahl: It's the second to the dog's purpose.
Julian Contreras Jr: Mm-hmm.
Kendahl: And I'll tell you right now, this is another one of those. Critics gave it a terrible review and I really enjoyed it. It was a great film. It's a good family film.
Julian Contreras Jr: You love dog movies. That could be it.
Kendahl: I do love dog movies.
Julian Contreras Jr: There's a lot of cat people out there that...
Kendahl: I do.
Julian Contreras Jr: Where's our cat movies?
Kendahl: you're Well, there was dog there was dogs and cats and that that was a terrible movie.
Julian Contreras Jr: If you can touch my heart with something like The Incredible Journey from when I was a kid, then we're talking. It was a great movie.
Kendahl: Yeah, that's maybe one of these days they'll remake that one for us. They're remaking everything else from our childhood.
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah they might as well because nobody watches it but all right that's gonna wrap it up for our episode i will be back kendall will be in ireland but i will be back with a special guest who has been on the show before because she worked on another movie and she got me something incredibly amazing i feel like
Kendahl: Right. Yeah.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Kendahl: Yeah, that was pretty cool.
Julian Contreras Jr: And there's there'll be a story to come on that, I promise you. But Kendall, before you leave the United States, I guess, you got anything to say?
Kendahl: You know what? I don't. Stay cool. Have fun. Go hug the people that you love. If you've ever had that moment, you're like, I need to call them. I promise you, you did. You needed to call them. So call them.
Kendahl: Go over next door. Go say hi to that neighbor you forgot to say hi to because you were busy. Go spend time with the people that are part of your life and never forget to make sure that they know that they're important.
Julian Contreras Jr: All right. Until next time, i was to your left.
Kendahl: And don't forget, turn on something good.
