Julian Contreras Jr: Oh, hello, ladies and gentlemen, welcome into a long awaited episode 77 of shut off, turn on. I am here, Julian, and that guy over there is still with me.

Julian Contreras Jr: His name is.

Kendahl: This is Kendall over here on the East snowy coast.

Julian Contreras Jr: The East snowy coast. Yeah, we got nice sunshine out here, but ah so we were here before the Super Bowl and we were supposed to be back for predictions and something happened.

Kendahl: ah

Julian Contreras Jr: Uh, I'm, I think I can officially talk about it without like crying and tearing up now.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: But, um, unfortunately i and my family have had a, don't know. It's kind of weird. Cause I feel like if you've had an animal, you understand what I'm talking about, but I'm just going to say it. Like I want to say it. Uh, a member of our family has passed away. He was here for 16 years And he's our little cat, Peanut.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: I mean, everybody that knows me and has been around me for those 16 years has known Peanut.

Kendahl: Yeah. I mean, even even my wife knew about Peanut. So...

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. He was our good little ah American bobtail. A little short little tail guy. he he was with us for forever through a move. He moved into a bigger house. He got a little cat brother. And he got a little human brother, too, because he was here before my son was.

Kendahl: Yeah, he was.

Julian Contreras Jr: And it was just so crazy. I text Kendall, like you had something going on Saturday. So we were going to push it to just before the Superbowl.

Kendahl: huh.

Julian Contreras Jr: And unfortunately that Saturday, my wife had called me at work, which she never does. She'll text me, sure. But when she calls, that means something's going on.

Kendahl: Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: So I was i was off in a little while anyway, so I didn't leave too early. But she was like, hey, something's some of this is definitely wrong with Peanut. Like he is not using his paw right. I don't know if he sprained it or broke it doing something. But i was like, all right, I'll be home in a little bit. And so she calls me again.

Julian Contreras Jr: She's like, no, something is definitely wrong. Like, he is not right. So she was trying to pack him up, get him in the crate so he could find any sort of hospital that was available on Saturday night, right before the Super Bowl.

Julian Contreras Jr: Ended up having to drive like 26 miles, I think, maybe further before we found the first hospital that could take him. And they took him back. They did some tests and they they figured out he had a he had a heart disease and it had thrown a blood clot to his left paw.

Julian Contreras Jr: And so it was kind of yeah, it was kind of curled up and.

Kendahl: Oh, that would be why he's messing with the paw.

Julian Contreras Jr: We got him there really fast, which was good, like we didn't like he didn't go to sleep somewhere or try to deal with it himself, you know, so she was right there. But the paw was going cold.

Julian Contreras Jr: And so they were trying to get him on some medication to get that to pass through, like the clot.

Kendahl: Uh-huh.

Julian Contreras Jr: So we had to leave him overnight. And it was like one of the saddest things. Like he was trying to hide behind me on the bench because he was he was my little guy. Like he was he had chose dad where the other cat chose mom.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: But.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: So he was my little guy and he was trying to hide behind me. And i mean, we knew the right thing to do was get him tested and try to get everything done that could help him out. And hopefully they gave us hope that the clot would pass through and that he would regain use of the paw.

Julian Contreras Jr: And so we left him overnight and before the Super Bowl, was just me and my wife. And we were like, well, let's just let's go up and see him. Like, let's give him his blanket. Let's be with him. Because I I don't know what an animal feels like if like you just kind of leave him at the hospital. You know, like it's kind of weird.

Julian Contreras Jr: Like if he never sees us again, he's with strangers.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: i don't know. I just don't want to do that. So we called and said, hey, could we go up and see him? Would that be okay? Like, you know, I know there's protocol and procedures and whatnot, but we were going to give him his blanket.

Julian Contreras Jr: We were going to cuddle with him. And she's like, okay, yeah. So we actually have high hopes that the medication has done the work and maybe the paw's coming back. The medication's working.

Julian Contreras Jr: So we get all the way up there. we get about seven minutes away from the place, Kendall. And they call us again and they tell us that, unfortunately, the medication has allowed him to throw another clot and it was down in his saddle, which is, I assume, his like his back legs.

Julian Contreras Jr: I'm not i'm not a vet.

Kendahl: Right. Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: But he was um he was basically paralyzed from the hips down now. And we're like I'm like, oh my gosh. Like we were going up here with high hopes. And now we're going there with the completely opposite feeling.

Julian Contreras Jr: We were seven minutes away. We got there and we were able to be with him. They took us in the back and we got to pet him. He was on meds, but you could definitely tell that he could see us.

Julian Contreras Jr: So, I mean, it was rough. I text you the next day.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: And it was, it's still kind of getting me to me, like the more I talk about it, but we got to focus on the positive here. Like we were home. He didn't suffer for too long.

Julian Contreras Jr: Like we weren't on vacation or he wasn't here with somebody else that would be just be like, Oh, something's wrong with him.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: I'll just text somebody.

Kendahl: You know, what's crazy is so your story, was I was I was pet sitting for my father in law. And it's it's the opposite of your story. And um i noticed something wrong with my father in law's dog.

Kendahl: And i I lucky enough. was at home at the time, and I had a couple of days off. And so I was, I was taking care of him. And I text my father and was like, Hey, you know, he's really acting kind of funny. I'm not sure what's going on.

Kendahl: And he's like, Oh, it's probably this, this and this right just these odd, odd and off things. And the worst part it was, is I laid there with their dog.

Kendahl: for days, like two or three days, just taking care of him, giving me a little bit of water, and eventually took him to a vet, because i I knew there was only a very short period of time left. But you know, that's the opposite side where he, you know, he actually, unfortunately passed away with no one.

Kendahl: I mean, i it was me. I stayed with him the whole time. And so it was like this really sweet moment between him and I in his last little bit. But, you know, that's hard. That's that. And i so when you say people, if people get it, they get it.

Kendahl: I get it because, you know, I've I've had.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: I've had my own, I mean, my first kid, my first kid, his name was Micah. He was a little Labrador beagle mix. That was my first kid. And he was 17, think, when he passed away. Man, that was hard.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: It was hard. I remember that.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. My wife and i we to talked on the way back and we were like, It's just so crazy. Like, it just came on out of nowhere. he We just thought, like, he would just be old and then he'd gradually, you know, have, like, the old-timer cat where he couldn't jump up or anything and he couldn't walk and we'd have to give him social food and medicine for a couple years, you know? And it just and wasn't in the cards for us.

Julian Contreras Jr: But I am thankful that he didn't suffer for too long.

Kendahl: Right. that's I mean, yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: So...

Kendahl: I mean, i am i mean i I know Peanut from obviously just chats with you and I can be honest with you, even in this this podcast series that we've been doing.

Kendahl: Peanut has been an unofficial part of the podcast on many, many occasions.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: So...

Julian Contreras Jr: Walking in here and yeah.

Kendahl: So even for all you out there that may not know peanut, I promise you he has been here even in these moments where you have been with us.

Julian Contreras Jr: So.

Julian Contreras Jr: yeah So for my family out there listening that have watched him when we are on vacation and he may have, I don't know, maybe he had bit you. that's

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: He didn't definitely didn't like strangers petting him. He was intimidating. We got some photos of him like showing off his guns to my sister. like

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: She was kind of worried about it. But at the risk of a having a swear word on here, it to quote Hot Tub Time Machine, you know, that friend that's an asshole and nobody likes, well, he was our asshole. So rest in peace, peanut.

Julian Contreras Jr: We love you. and we're going move this on down the road now. So enough of the sad, sappy stuff. I'm going to jump right back in. i have the notes here from when we were supposed to record.

Julian Contreras Jr: So right first thing is a catch up and then Superbowl predictions. So that's two weeks or old now.

Kendahl: Oh, hey, hey, who who do you think is going to win the Super Bowl?

Julian Contreras Jr: ah I mean, no matter what I say now is not going matter because it could just be made up.

Kendahl: yeah

Julian Contreras Jr: But I, I honestly had the Seahawks winning, which is dangerous in this household because everyone else is Patriots fans.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: I just thought they were the better team. I didn't realize it was going to be like that.

Kendahl: Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: So, yeah, that's what I have with Super Bowl. Did you have...

Kendahl: i So i my kids kept asking me who was going to win. And I just said, I just don't care. i just don't want the Patriots to win. So by unofficial elements, I was good with the Seahawks. But you know the funny thing was, though, is I had a conversation with a really good friend of mine who is a Patriots fan. And she literally, she's like halfway through the game, I turned it off.

Kendahl: She goes, I didn't even care. i was i was I was very much at the point where she goes, if the Patriots were just not going to show up, I wasn't either. So.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. I mean, they did in the third quarter when they got that touchdown and I was like, hey, they're only down this many now.

Kendahl: a

Julian Contreras Jr: Like it could happen.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: Like because we said it, the Patriots find a way.

Kendahl: Yeah. Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: And like that whole first half, they could have looked like garbage. And then the third quarter, if they would have scored, what, 17 points, they were right in it, if not in the lead.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: So I wasn't too dead set that the Seahawks were going to win like that. I thought they would come back, but you know, that's what happens. Not all Super Bowls are super.

Kendahl: Good prediction, though.

Julian Contreras Jr: I've been, yeah, I've been part of two of them where I've definitely picked the loser, but that's old news.

Kendahl: ah

Julian Contreras Jr: We'll wait till ah September when it comes back to talk about football again. I want to jump into what everyone is here for. What have we been watching? We know there's a ton of shows out there right now.

Julian Contreras Jr: I know these notes are two weeks old, but let's talk about the one that finalized like two weeks ago.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: Fallout 2. two Let's just jump right into that. Season 2, Fallout.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: Season 1, we absolutely loved. I think we can both agree on that.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: I want your opinion on 2 before i go ahead.

Kendahl: So, okay. You and I have gone back and forth a little bit on this, right? So um the thing is, if you haven't watched the Fallout series yet, i don't want to say this is a little bit of spoiler, but I can't talk about it without a little bit of spoiler. I just, I feel like that's impossible.

Kendahl: So, um...

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: you know Fallout season two, you you now have you know Maximus kind of in this position where he's trying to still figure himself out within the brotherhood. And now he, you know in the at the end of this first season, he actually you know ends up kind of becoming um you know friends with Lucy. And they you know they have to kind of figure out how to

Kendahl: buying away right because they're kind of on opposite scales right you have lucy who's the the who's the vault dweller and and maximus who's been on the surface for the whole time and he knows how crappy the world is but he feels like there could be better right he has this inner inner monologue it always is like oh they're still good out there and you get a little bit more of that backstory as you watch season two and i won't give that much away but um

Julian Contreras Jr: Right.

Kendahl: In this one, it's it once again, it it ends with Lucy and and Maximus kind of finding their way back to each other, ironically. um But i the problem I had with this was I felt like there was a lot of storylines that got brought into this.

Kendahl: second season that a didn't come into any kind of conclusion, which is fine because this is a series, right? You have, you have more time to conclude them, but I didn't even feel like they were satisfying enough to finish the season on.

Kendahl: Right. Like there was, I didn't feel like there was enough of a mystery.

Julian Contreras Jr: Right. Yeah.

Kendahl: i'm like, Oh, I'm really curious how they're going to end this. It's more like, oh Oh, wait, wait, what about what about this? What happened there? why Why didn't they go back to that? And it just dead ends. And I don't i don't know how they're going to bring it into season three.

Kendahl: um I assume they have reasons. But I just feel like there's a lot of odds and end storylines that just kind of petered out. and um

Kendahl: i But I also feel like season two was a slow burn. Because i felt like as I car started thinking about it, as you and I talked about this many times, how just it feel it feels it felt empty.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: It felt like the whole season was a little empty. But it was good. And the reason it was good, because I started to recognize as as a fan of Fallout, as a person that played it, when you start looking at the, um you know, the, ah my gosh, what was it, NCR?

Kendahl: Right. National. Yeah. New California Republic. So at the very tail end of season two, you have the NCR that pops in. That was kind of cool, but it took me a minute to recognize the significance of that shift going into the next season.

Kendahl: And I realized later on after you and I had a chat, that's kind of cool. And I'm I'm really kind of excited for that part. Then looking into um kind of the the.

Kendahl: way they ended the the part of New Vegas, it was also pretty cool because I think that eludes to some stuff that's coming up in the third season as well. So I don't know. I guess you kind of have to look at it as I think the season was more of a slow burn and it was more of a dead excuse me more of a dedication to the Fallout fans than it was to the casual viewer.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay. So that's definitely what I am. as I'm a casual viewer to this.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: And I think I called you when it was over and done with to make sure you had finished. And we both had agreed that there was a lot of storylines that opened up. To me, it felt like opening a box in the garage that had like four ends to it, four main ends.

Kendahl: Yep.

Julian Contreras Jr: And then once you start untangling them, they all just intertwined and there was a huge knot like everything. There's like five main characters, right? Let's just narrow it down to five main characters. We got Lucy, we got Maximus, we got Lucy's dad, and we have, what's her name, Nancy?

Kendahl: Yep. Yep. In the vault.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. But then all of them, they met so many people over this, and her brother, who just opened the thing and had like 30 people come out. And now you're like, okay, well, who are these 30 people? And then you had Macaulay Culkin out of nowhere.

Kendahl: That was like the best part of the whole season.

Julian Contreras Jr: you so so season two i feel like yes it was good but it it opened way too much for me i could shut way too much information at me i text you that i think i was lost for like episodes five and six while building back but that's what a long season is so hopefully season three will come out finally they'll give us a date when they're actually going to do it you've told me that they're scheduled scheduled for six

Kendahl: Kaisar.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Kendahl: Oh, so I was just reading the other day that, um, that there are rumors that they're scheduled for three more seasons.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, so that would be five full seasons. So hopefully we can see an end to this and it doesn't get canceled because of the confusion, which we've seen before. My favorite show from way back in 06 was Daybreak with Taye Diggs.

Julian Contreras Jr: And this is way before you could find shows on the internet easily or other streaming networks could buy it.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: But it just went away. it was a Thursday. It was supposed to be on. had like three episodes left and they just cut us off. And I finally looked at the story and it was canceled due to confusion. People couldn't just jump in and watch it and know what was going on.

Kendahl: Yeah. And I feel like there's a part of this that does play into that concern because like you said, you were, for me, as someone that played it, knew some of the storyline behind Fallout.

Kendahl: As I started thinking through it, I realized how much more this season was built around being that... um that callback to certain aspects of Fallout that that people that played Fallout were looking for.

Kendahl: It's not to say that the first one didn't do that. I just, I feel like the first one was really setting the stage for the casual viewer, right? I mean,

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.

Kendahl: It's the reason why i think shows that or or even movies that have played off of video games have not been successful is because they hit they heavily play into that character development and set development that um they're assuming too many people already know what's going on in the show in the show due to being fans of the video game.

Kendahl: Where I think Fallout played the opposite of that. and it's like, hey, let's create this entire universe essentially from scratch for anyone that's never seen this. But play homage to or, you know, give something to the people that love the video game as well. So that way we keep both sides. And I think the first season did a good amount of that.

Kendahl: But I think this one played a little heavier to the video game. group And that's why I think because even I've done a few online searches for social media and I think they've also felt that way. There's like this quick divide of season two was too confusing, too many things going on. I didn't feel like it was as good as season one, whereas a lot of the Fallout players are like, bam, this was great. I love the season. Can't wait for season three. I'm so excited for NCR. Like, I just I think that's where the divide happened for this season.

Julian Contreras Jr: All right. All right. Well, let's just ah close the book on that one. Season two, we have high hopes for season three.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: If you love it, great.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: If you're confused as I am, let's just stick with it. Let's not give up on it.

Kendahl: Yep, yep.

Julian Contreras Jr: But let's move on to some other shows that we have been watching.

Kendahl: So yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: Hopefully it gives some a listeners other options to go to. I'm just going to name a couple. I'm not going to jump into them, but I know you have a couple, a show and a movie that you wanted to talk to about for a while.

Kendahl: Yep, yep.

Julian Contreras Jr: But HBO has The Pit season two.

Kendahl: Oh, I keep hearing so much about this.

Julian Contreras Jr: I'm absolutely in love with that show still. Season two is just as good as number one. That season's almost over. So if you haven't seen The Pit yet, go ahead. It's a great show. Great acting, great scenarios. Medical stuff doesn't seem over the top.

Julian Contreras Jr: Really good. And then, of course, Traders, Pit. is almost ending there's one episode left and then uh the next time it comes out they're going to have some ah nine to fivers i was not selected sorry i will not be on the traders season six uh i still going to watch the show it's not going to deter me what else have you been watching i know you've been watching one with uh alan tudyk right

Kendahl: Yeah, yeah. So I've been, I've been, watching oh, I, so I, I watched, um, resident alien. So I have always seen this show. It was a sci-fi show, built around a comic book series from DC comics called resident alien of the same name. Right. Um, and the, the funny thing is, is, so this is a series that, um, started off on sci-fi,

Kendahl: Did really well until the third season. Their numbers dropped. So SyFy was like, I'm on the exit game. USA picks it up, does a fourth season, and then cuts it off.

Kendahl: um And you can see you can kind of see the difference in the in the series from three to four, for sure. In the writing alone, production is different cameras. They obviously use just a whole lot of things that were different. But besides that, um I I happen to see an article and it was like the best sci fi comedy.

Kendahl: Uh, since blah, blah, blah. And I was like, okay. And I read through it and it said for resident alien who it's now on Netflix. i was like, huh? Okay. I had seen it at many times. Just never really thought about it.

Kendahl: Popped it wash, sat down, watched it with my wife. I people, I have never hands down watched a show and laughs so hard so quickly within the very first episode.

Kendahl: Like that first episode typically takes you a minute, right? It's like that. OK, that was a little weird because it's typically a combination of a pilot and then a re-edit to make it the first episode.

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.

Kendahl: And this one, it was the pilot and it just was fantastic. It's hilarious. Just um Alan Tudyk, he does a great job of playing this.

Kendahl: alien that gets stranded on Earth and his entire design for being here on Earth is to destroy humans. That's his whole point is to come to Earth and destroy the human race.

Kendahl: And so every episode and OK, I will preface all of this. If you decide to start the show. Don't skip the intros. Don't skip the intros. Let the intros play. They are so funny because every intro is different. Every single intro for every single show is different from the last one. And it is hands down hilarious because for the first at least two seasons,

Kendahl: every intro has a little caveat or a little like Easter egg or a little like foreshadowing for things to come. And so just, it's so good. It's so funny. um And at every turn that you think the show is going to be a little weirder, it gets even more weird, but it's good. Weird.

Kendahl: Um, I will forewarn you if you're one of our listeners and that's very sensitive to to language. The first season definitely throws down some language.

Kendahl: There's even a scene of we'll say nudity. It's you get to see Alan Tudyk in his greatest review options um and it's hilarious.

Julian Contreras Jr: I don't even know what that means.

Kendahl: And I will tell you, I know our show is PG, but I have to i don't i don't know how else to say this. There is a lot of penis jokes.

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.

Kendahl: throughout the show and they play so well into every inch of every storyline.

Julian Contreras Jr: Nice pun there.

Kendahl: But what's that?

Julian Contreras Jr: Nice pun.

Kendahl: Yes.

Julian Contreras Jr: ah

Kendahl: So I worked on that one. No. um So i but anyway, I highly recommend it. It's so funny. It's so good. And it is definitely the the the very like perfection of what we talk about with Shut Off, Turn On. It's just so funny and good to follow along. And every episode leads into the next episode. And there are running jokes that run from the very first episode literally to the very last episode of the fourth season. um They only did four seasons, but I can tell you right now, it works.

Kendahl: They did a good job in those four seasons. So go out there, go find it.

Julian Contreras Jr: right.

Kendahl: You can get, um all the episodes on Peacock, um, because it played on USA, or you can watch the first three seasons on Netflix. Um, if you have no commercial setups on Netflix, that's good. If you run around Peacock, obviously there are still, um, commercials if you have the lower end of that one. So yeah, anyway, good show. Go watch it. Um,

Kendahl: I did have, I did go see another movie and I'm wondering, you you want me to go into it?

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, li I was just going to say, let's ah let's shift over to movies.

Kendahl: All right.

Julian Contreras Jr: the So we're we're rushing along. We're already with you with 25 minutes. We haven't got to the heart of what the episode is going to be because we've been off for so long. So we apologize that this one's going to be rushed.

Julian Contreras Jr: But those are our TV shows. Now we're going to jump into some movies that y'all may or may not have seen in the theater or at home.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: And I'm going let Kendall go first on this one because I have not seen this movie and I definitely want to hear this review.

Kendahl: Okay, so i went and saw opening week Iron Lung. i I was a little reluctant to see this because um I'm not a fan of, if you know who Markiplier is, um he is a very in like foundational YouTube star. I mean, the guy literally was on YouTube when YouTube was in its infancy.

Kendahl: Gained a huge following, doing random little videos, cat videos, things that were just off the wall. And I think he now does a little bit more like video game type stuff and like walkthroughs, which is still cool. I mean, he's he's a huge guy on on all the streaming networks.

Kendahl: But yeah. He really got into a video game called Iron Lung, and he had this idea to change this semi horror game into a horror film.

Kendahl: And so he gets in touch with the right people at the right moment and basically says, hey, I think I could do this if you give me the chance.

Kendahl: And they're basically like, yeah, that's great, but we're not going to fund this. And he's like, OK. And so he does. He puts basically all his own money into it. I think there is some other people that that ended up joining in later on to fund some of it. But I mean, the guy literally paid for everything, production, production.

Kendahl: set design the the ah a award-winning most blood ever produced on film um so it actually takes the cake for the um film with the most fake blood in it so there you go um so the premise of the movie is um in some distant relative time

Julian Contreras Jr: right.

Kendahl: They are trying to figure out where humanity is going to go, and they send convicts into these individualized subs out into different worlds with oceans and stuff like that to find ways to fix the human ah lack of food, basically.

Kendahl: So they send him to this blood moon. It's a moon that it's waterways are are made of blood. And the only way to do that, or the only way to travel them is to circumvent with very minimal map understanding because blood is thicker than water. Obviously they can't see through the blood. So they have to use this like sonar sensor, radiation camera option to see through what they're doing.

Kendahl: And I will tell you, he's there's he's basically the only person in this film. There is a few people that do come in later on for a few minutes, but even then they're very minimal. It's just him.

Kendahl: And. Here's my hot take.

Kendahl: This movie is. Difficult to watch. Not for any other reason than it's just a very slow moving movie. It doesn't have a lot of action. It doesn't have a lot of plot thickening elements. There's not a lot of character design because there's only one character.

Kendahl: But, you know, we're things like Castaway, one character the whole way through. yeah There was just this really in-depth character design, right? his His turmoil of getting through his challenge, his ingenuity of trying to get past some of the the oddities that it were living on his island by himself.

Kendahl: All these things that really built into understanding who the character was.

Kendahl: His character is just sitting in a sub and an an he sits in a sub. for for for two two hours and yeah there's some there's some oddity to the film and yeah there's a little bit of a mystery because he finds this creature and they're like go find this creature then it gets into these weird i can't i don't i don't know i'm i'm having a hard time because i don't want to give it away because it kind of is a surprise and you're like what in the capital four letter word is happening

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.

Kendahl: And then the worst part is is, when you say that, you think, oh, maybe there'll be an explanation to it. No. No, there's not. And it's just, it's so, it's so weird.

Julian Contreras Jr: right, so so it's safe to say you're not going to see this movie again.

Kendahl: I know I'm dragging this on a little bit, but... Okay, see, here's here's the thing. Yes, I am. And i know I know I sound like I'm giving it a terrible review, but I'm not...

Kendahl: It's a movie that i literally walked out and I told my wife, well, that's two hours I'm never getting back of my life. And i i was very i was I was very sweet to my daughter and told her, this is interesting, but this is interesting. but and then And then the weird thing happened.

Kendahl: Then I start playing the movie through my head again. And I'm like, okay, wait, was this what was going on? But because it's not so directly explained, there's so much fill in the gap.

Kendahl: Now, I will tell you, if you... Okay, you, when we have you ever played first-person games where it's a storyline?

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. Uh-huh.

Kendahl: Sometimes there's a lot of fill in the blanks on purpose, right? It's to build your story. It's to build your experience.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: He did that with this.

Julian Contreras Jr: All right.

Kendahl: So there's this kind of self-guided, I'm building my own story in this movie. And it's on purpose. Some people like that. I did not.

Kendahl: I did not.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: But now I want to go back and re and and re-watch it because I want to say, okay, is this what was happening? And I just didn't see it until after the slow burn of sitting back thinking about it for a week.

Kendahl: So I'm going to tell you, I'm not going to tell you to go watch this in theaters. i don't even know if it's in theaters anymore. if If it isn't theaters, hold off. If it's out for rent, still hold off.

Kendahl: go When it comes to streaming and it's free somewhere, go find it, go watch it. It might be two hours you can never get back either, but I don't know.

Julian Contreras Jr: Thank you.

Kendahl: it's It's an interesting movie. It's definitely one that makes you think. It it it it is very odd, but in the end, hands down, it was still an interesting movie to watch.

Kendahl: And being that it's self-made and that he paid for everything in the process, because he was also director, producer, part writer, like literally the guy's name was on every inch of this film.

Kendahl: i I mean, it's good. It's good in that sense. Going into it with no knowledge of this game, I think is what really made it difficult for me to enjoy it.

Julian Contreras Jr: okay

Kendahl: But... i don't know. Sorry. I know that was a little long explanation, but I promise you, if you see it, if you see it, if you see it, you'll understand. It's just so weird. It's so weird. Oh, OK. There's one scene. There's one scene where he's looking at this like godlike creature and they're talking to him like he's some divine child. And you're like, what the heck is going on?

Kendahl: And then again, a week later, my brain's like, oh, OK, I get it. I get what's happening. And now i want to rewatch to see if that's what was happening.

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay. right. Well, my reviews aren't going to be like that.

Kendahl: So. I'm sorry.

Julian Contreras Jr: yeah

Kendahl: OK.

Julian Contreras Jr: ah So on Prime, I watched The Wrecking Crew. i don't know if you've seen this yet, but I've watched it twice now.

Julian Contreras Jr: It's got Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista.

Kendahl: Right,

Julian Contreras Jr: They play brothers in Hawaii. Perfect, right?

Kendahl: right, right.

Julian Contreras Jr: Perfect.

Kendahl: right

Julian Contreras Jr: Movie is absolutely hilarious. The action is good. The story is okay. But those two working together, especially Momoa, he's just getting so good at what he does where he doesn't even feel like he's acting anymore. He's just being Jason.

Kendahl: He's just being him.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, I mean, it started for me with Fast X when he played that bad guy and he was just off the wall, off the chain, just hilarious in what he was doing.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: Clearly just having fun with the character, not necessarily caring if it worked or not, But I feel like this is what the Wrecking Crew is. It's absolutely hilarious. I laughed a lot. The action's really good. The fight scenes are fun.

Julian Contreras Jr: Go ahead and check that one out on Prime. I think it was number one for a good week when it came out.

Kendahl: Oh, it's still in the top five.

Julian Contreras Jr: Still in top five? Okay. And it's been out for three weeks now. And then I went to go see Goat with my family.

Kendahl: Okay.

Julian Contreras Jr: This is the Steph Curry basketball movie in the animation style of K-pop Demon Hunters and one of the Spider-Mans.

Kendahl: Mm

Kendahl: hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: I can't remember what the exact name of that Spider-Man is, but it was an okay basketball movie. It knew what it was. it definitely aimed itself towards the younger kids that wanted to see that style of animation.

Julian Contreras Jr: My wife did not like it.

Kendahl: okay Yeah, it's in the eighty s

Julian Contreras Jr: She's like, that story was kind of dumb. And I was like, it was okay for kids. I think my son liked it. And then we took my niece and she sat through it. If that says anything for a little kid, but definitely, definitely give that a try. Not because I'm a Steph Curry fan, but because it was an okay movie. It's got really high ratings. I think it's 86%. Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: yeah So it wasn't absolutely horrible. but I liked it. But then that night I went by myself and I saw crime one Oh one, that one, Kendall, that one's going to be good.

Kendahl: Yeah. Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: It's got just like what you said with mercy. It's got Amazon written all over it. It will be on prime. I think before it goes anywhere else, because that's the first name you see is an Amazon production really,

Julian Contreras Jr: Long movie, slow burning, but the acting was so good. And the way he pulled off the robberies, very nice.

Kendahl: And see, I was sad. I wanted to go see this one. I i even had texted you. right, I'm going to go see this.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, you definitely should have.

Kendahl: And yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: I told you it was rated R, but not for much.

Kendahl: Well, and the the crazy thing was the two times that weekend that I went to go get tickets, they were sold out.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. It was good. um you You can see it on Amazon soon. ah I can almost guarantee it.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: But ah you had Thor in it. You had the Hulk in it.

Kendahl: Chris Hemsworth, yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: You had Storm. If you want to go ahead.

Kendahl: I was just going to say, just hopefully you know all those actors.

Julian Contreras Jr: Tali Berry, Mark Ruffalo, and you gave me the first one. Go ahead.

Kendahl: Chris Hemsworth.

Julian Contreras Jr: Say it again.

Kendahl: Yep. Yep.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: Yep. it's got an 88 on Rotten Tomatoes. So.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, really good. It's a little long in the tooth, but I enjoyed myself. you know Even at the dull moments, I was like, okay, I really like this one.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: So I will definitely see it again. And then a movie I was just telling you about yesterday that I said you should watch with your wife because it was super cute. It's only PG-13. It's on Netflix.

Julian Contreras Jr: Pretty sure they own the rights to it because I haven't seen it anywhere else. Based on the book, but the people we meet On vacation, I believe in the name is called.

Kendahl: On vacation. Yep.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. I watched this one not going anywhere into it. Like, this is just going to be a typical rom-com. I'm not going to like it. The acting is going to be terrible. You know, the all the the guy things we say when stuff like that comes on.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: But I actually liked it a lot. It was really... Interesting. The story moved well. And I think I told you it worked in its favor because I didn't know any of the actors going in.

Julian Contreras Jr: I didn't have any preconceptions of their acting style. It was just really good. I highly recommend it. I don't know how long it's been on Netflix, but

Kendahl: It's just this year. It just came out by this year. So

Julian Contreras Jr: yeah, I really, really liked that one.

Kendahl: yeah, it's it's um it's one of those I think I saw the preview of it in a coming soon type thing prior. But yeah, it looks really funny. So

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, I would say your wife is definitely going to like it. And then you will like it too, because you can actually enjoy it.

Kendahl: yeah

Julian Contreras Jr: But right now we're going to move into a couple movies that are coming up. I'm going to let you go with the Ryan Gosling one. And then I'm going to bring up one of the main topics that we have, because I have some interesting things to say.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: So go let's go ahead.

Kendahl: So, yeah. So, um you know, so one of the things... I saw the preview for this movie. I swear to you, it was last Super Bowl. It's Project Hail Mary with Ryan Gosling, right? So the um the whole thing is... This is actually...

Kendahl: So the guy that wrote Andy, we're Andy. I think it's Andy Weir. ah He is a writer that wrote The Martian. That that was Matt Damon a few years back, if you remember. Really good movie. And he wrote this book as well. And they also changed it into a movie. And the whole premise is you've got ah Ryan Gosling basically being sent off into the universe to figure out how they can fix, you know, the earth and and save humanity. And...

Kendahl: And I think in the previews now that's just recently come out, you can see that he meets an alien in that process.

Julian Contreras Jr: Mm-hmm.

Kendahl: But the whole thing is, is it's like, holy cow, he's, you know, this has been, i so i swear to you, I i have been watching previews for this for over a year and I'm kind of excited for it.

Kendahl: I think it looks really good. And I've heard, ah i've I've heard a lot of, um, you know, odds and ends about it, uh, rumblings in, in like social communities that they're a little skeptical because, you know, this has already been done before. This, this feels very much like a, what was the movie arrival type thing, right? You have humans talking to aliens, trying to fix humanity.

Kendahl: But I feel like this is more comedy. That was more serious. This has, I think a little bit more comedic element to it. Just like the Martian, you know, it wasn't, super funny, but I think it'll work. I don't know. I'm i'm excited for it. I think it'll look good. It looks really good. looks beautiful as a film, right? I mean, it looks beautiful.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, it looks really good. I saw the... longer trailer when I went to go see goat and it showed him interacting with the alien and they were kind of mimicking each other.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: So I liked that one. It looks pretty interesting, so it should be fine.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: All right.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: So now the main one that I want to talk about comes out this Friday, maybe Thursday, some later shows, but scream seven that is finally coming out.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Kendahl: Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: and I'm super excited for this one. I have really high hopes. I love the Scream franchise.

Kendahl: Franchise. Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: I just hope they don't mess it up, for lack of better words.

Kendahl: My wife, my wife, when she saw that, because when we went and saw Mercy, they had a preview for Scream 7. And she's like, there's seven of them.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. But I do want to break this down because one of my favorite bands, Ice Nine Kills, is doing a song. I mean, they cover, they don't cover songs, but they make songs based on movies.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: And they have some of the dialogue. This one is featuring McKenna Grace.

Kendahl: yeah

Julian Contreras Jr: So she sings in it. And I have on my notes that it comes out February 19th, which is obviously in the past now. I've listened to the song a few times. She does sing on it.

Julian Contreras Jr: I don't think it gives anything away because I was definitely worried because with her being featured with this song for the movie, And in the trailer, i don't know if you know this or not, Kendall, but Scream has a thing with blue denim.

Julian Contreras Jr: A lot of the killers wear blue denim at some point in the movie.

Kendahl: hmm.

Kendahl: OK, yeah, i think I heard that once.

Julian Contreras Jr: So in the trailer, she's walking with Neve Campbell's daughter. And what color skirt does she have on? But it's a blue denim flannel.

Kendahl: OK.

Julian Contreras Jr: So I'm really worried that with the song and the blue denim, like, is it going to be too obvious going in now? I hope it's not. And I hope that I'm not giving anything away to listeners out there that are going to go see this this weekend with me, but I'm a little worried now, buddy.

Julian Contreras Jr: is

Kendahl: That she might, that she might unfortunately be.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: gotcha. I gotcha.

Julian Contreras Jr: You know what I'm saying? We don't have to say it out loud.

Kendahl: I know what you're saying.

Julian Contreras Jr: We all know what what I'm saying.

Kendahl: Exactly. i was like, I'm not going to say that loud.

Julian Contreras Jr: But that's this Friday. We will definitely be back and I will have a review on that one. Hopefully you guys get out and there's nothing going on.

Kendahl: So speaking of McKenna Grace, did you hear that she's been picked to do the new live action Scooby-Doo?

Julian Contreras Jr: But...

Julian Contreras Jr: As... Not Velma, Daphne.

Kendahl: Daphne.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yes.

Kendahl: Daphne, yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: I did see a little bit on that. Not too much.

Kendahl: Oh, okay.

Julian Contreras Jr: I didn't invest time to see if it was true or not. But I did see that.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: She's just one of those up and coming names that...

Kendahl: Yeah, she's she's actually already has, I think, something like 20...

Julian Contreras Jr: is ah Yeah.

Kendahl: 20 or something like 20 main character roles. like She's played in a lot of films overall, but I think she's had 20 main character roles. Now, I think she's at, isn't she 19? 17? 19? Something like that.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, 19 or 20, I think.

Kendahl: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: She was in both new Ghostbusters that were really good.

Kendahl: Yep.

Julian Contreras Jr: She was in that mathematics movie with Chris Evans where she played the math genius... That was a really good movie.

Kendahl: Oh. I don't remember that one. I don't remember the name.

Julian Contreras Jr: I don't remember the title.

Kendahl: I mean, yeah, and then obviously she played in regretting you.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. Which, uh, some of us like some of us didn't, it was okay.

Kendahl: i didn't say it was bad.

Julian Contreras Jr: But her name is coming out.

Kendahl: but

Julian Contreras Jr: Like as long as she keeps acting good, I guess, I don't know. I'm not one to judge on somebody gifted yet.

Kendahl: Oh, gifted. Gifted. Yep.

Julian Contreras Jr: So way to go McKenna, keep them coming.

Kendahl: Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: Keep us entertained. right. So I'm going to say one thing because I'd be remiss if I miss out on this opportunity, but I don't know what you were doing early this morning, but USA hockey buddy, we won gold.

Kendahl: Oh, yeah, they did.

Julian Contreras Jr: I'm going to say we, because ah as an American citizen, I guess I'm a, we, they won gold for the first time in against Canada in overtime, sudden death.

Kendahl: Against Canada.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: And their, ah their overtime works a little different. It's a three on three style.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: it was It was awesome. i haven't I don't watch hockey a lot, but I did watch this one.

Kendahl: i haven't I didn't watch it.

Julian Contreras Jr: So...

Kendahl: I mean, I ah used to be a big hockey player. I actually played a little tidbit. I actually got to play a scrimmage round of hockey with the Soviet Union.

Kendahl: Soviet Union. Good gosh. Russian. but don't Just stop listening to me. I don't even know what I'm talking about. The Russian um Federation team in 2001 when they were in Utah.

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay. I think you did tell us that story.

Kendahl: Did I? I might have. i don't remember.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. When we were talking about hockey for something else.

Kendahl: ah

Julian Contreras Jr: um But yeah, it was a great game. You definitely have to see the highlights. There was a stick save, Kendall, that was point blank.

Kendahl: Wow.

Julian Contreras Jr: And he saved it with this stick and it bounced off that it was crazy. I think he had something like 41 saves.

Kendahl: That's cool. Wow.

Julian Contreras Jr: yeah crazy but congratulations usa men's hockey way to go cue up the free bird as everyone says and now to get over that we're i mean 46 minutes we're gonna try to get with this um not only in the recent past did peanut pass away but mr james vanderbeek

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: he passed away which brought up a lot of stuff because a lot of these actors our age are don't know they're not with us anymore and it's it's really kind of sad so we did a deep dive into one of the movies we could agree on from james van der beek it's from 1999 it's produced by mtv movies varsity blues

Kendahl: Yeah.

Kendahl: Because that was a thing back then.

Julian Contreras Jr: It was a thing. MTV. I mean, I still think they put out movies, but nothing like this. I got to get out my other notebook. So sorry if I make a noise, but I watched this recently when we agreed that we were going to do a deep dive and the more and more research I did on it, it just became more and more sad.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: So we all know varsity. Well, we don't all know because I Kendall. Oh my gosh. I talked to a couple of guys at work and i was like, yeah, well he did a deep dive on varsity blues for the show.

Kendahl: I know we talked about this.

Julian Contreras Jr: And he's like, what's that? I don't, i don't know what that is.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: i was like, you've never seen varsity blues. He's like, no, what is it? i was like, it came out in 1999. It's about football. And he's like, whoa, whoa, whoa. I was born in 01.

Julian Contreras Jr: I was like, oh, oh my gosh. Okay. Yeah. So yeah, you would never go see this.

Kendahl: this

Kendahl: this So the soundtrack to this movie was actually one of the m was one of the first CDs that I played in um in a car that I had rebuilt.

Kendahl: right So I rebuilt an old 1972 Comet. And I know I'm going a little bit long here for a second, but it was I bought this 1972 Comet, paid $500 back in the day, paid five hundred bucks back in the day The thing ran terrible.

Kendahl: It was just old fogey, still had an old tape deck player in it from who knows when. And the very first thing I did to that car was tear out the old stereo and put in a CD player because I needed something that worked because I could not be in my car without a radio.

Julian Contreras Jr: good Yeah, had to.

Kendahl: And back in the day, you bought a CD player that you could that that you you could take the face off. you Remember those? you to To safety, right? Or to security, take the face off.

Kendahl: So I remembered I put this in there.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yep.

Kendahl: And when I bought that CD player, I was like, it was like a t-shirt and a pair of jeans thing. You can't buy a pair of jeans and not buy a t-shirt that doesn't go with it. So I bought a CD player I'm like, I'm going to buy a CD to go with this. so I went over to CDs and Varsity Blues had just come out.

Kendahl: And I was and it was in theaters and I hadn't seen it yet. But I was like, I there was a song that was on that soundtrack that I knew. and I was like, you know what? Because back then when there was one song on a soundtrack, what did you But the whole dang thing.

Julian Contreras Jr: You had to buy the whole soundtrack.

Kendahl: So I bought the whole I bought the soundtrack.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: And that was the very first CD that I played in that CD player in that car in high school.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. So let me get into some of these facts. If you've watched Varsity Blues, you're going to love these facts. And if you're young enough and you listen to us and you want to see this movie, I highly recommend it. It's still entertaining.

Julian Contreras Jr: But like I said, this came out in 1999. So for you younger kids, you know, just stick with us. It was made with a $16 million dollars budget. That's estimated. It's not exact.

Julian Contreras Jr: And it made $53 million back, Kendall. Gross.

Kendahl: what

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. So, i mean, it did okay for what it was. Now I'm going to get to kind of the sad part of this movie. So we have James Vanderbeek as Jonathan Moxon.

Julian Contreras Jr: bre Like we said, he's recently passed away. We have Paul Walker playing Lance Harbor also passed away in 2013.

Kendahl: Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: We have Ron Lester who played Billy Bob who passed away in 2016.

Kendahl: Mm hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: This was after he had lost all the weight from all that weight and he passed away.

Kendahl: All that weight. Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: We had ah Scott Kahn as tweeter and Scott Kahn's doing fine.

Kendahl: yeah

Julian Contreras Jr: Way to go, Scott Kahn. Tweeters and don't dance. But you look at the cover of this movie and you see those three huge names. And when I was watching reels, as soon as Vanderbeek passed away, it showed ah the cover of it. And the three of those main guys were in black and white and the rest were in color.

Julian Contreras Jr: It was so sad to see.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: And then there was another one that kind of brought up my spirits. was like how I imagine Billy Bob picking up Moxon this morning.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: And it was a scene where he picks him up at the beginning of the movie and he's like yelling at him. He yells what he yells. And it was, that one brought a smile and that one made me want to watch the movie.

Julian Contreras Jr: But in this movie, you have a lot more names that were in there. You had Amy Smart playing Julie. You had Ali Larder, who I believe this was her very first movie. She played Darcy.

Julian Contreras Jr: And you had Jon Voight playing in the coach.

Kendahl: Yeah, it's a coach.

Julian Contreras Jr: And the oldest of the whole cast, Jon Voight, he's still with us.

Kendahl: na Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: it's It's weird how this world works, right, Kendall? It's crazy.

Kendahl: Only the good day young man.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. And yeah, I don't know what to say about that, but it it's it's true. It is sad. I don't want to like cry any more than I have, but I do want to, once I dove into this, I saw some fun facts. It's not some, and like a not so fun fact either, but in the movie, Jesse Plemons, you know who he is. He was in Begonia.

Kendahl: Correct. Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: He was in civil war. The guy that had the glasses on, he's like, well, what kind of American?

Kendahl: Yep. Yep. He has. Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: So he's uncredited in that movie, but I think that was what drew me into seeing that movie was him. He's actually in Varsity Blues. He plays Paul Walker's little brother, and his main scene is the barbecue where he just kind of a box like a chicken.

Kendahl: Yeah. Yeah. Oh, wow.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, that's that's Jesse.

Kendahl: I don't ask. That's funny. Oh, that makes me feel old.

Julian Contreras Jr: yeah Yeah, I mean, me too. And then one of the ah not so fun facts is the actor that played Kyle Moxon, James Vanderbilt's younger brother.

Kendahl: who

Julian Contreras Jr: ah He hasn't been seen since 2006. Yeah.

Kendahl: Yeah, i so I was just reading that. Yeah, that's crazy.

Julian Contreras Jr: yeah His name's ah Joe Pickler.

Kendahl: Joe Pitchler, Pitchler, Pitchler, Pitchler.

Julian Contreras Jr: Pitchler. Yeah.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: And I had no idea about that until I started doing research. And that's, that's just crazy.

Kendahl: Right. And no one knows why. Like no one has any idea where like, he just one day, ah someone saw him and the next day, no one could figure out where he went.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: No notice. He's didn't say anything about it.

Julian Contreras Jr: From.

Kendahl: He just disappeared.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. From what I read, he was playing poker with his buddies and everything seemed fine.

Kendahl: Yep.

Julian Contreras Jr: And then he disappeared. Two days later, they found his car behind a gas station or a restaurant. I can't remember on that.

Kendahl: All right.

Julian Contreras Jr: And there has two pages of writing, which they believed was a goodbye note. But they didn't say what the note said, obviously.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: But yeah, he hasn't been seen since 2006.

Kendahl: That's crazy.

Julian Contreras Jr: All right. That's enough of the fun facts. Let's jump into this movie, Kendall. What? There was so much in this movie at the time that made me watch it like six, seven times, eight times, 13 times.

Julian Contreras Jr: I don't know how many times I've seen this movie.

Kendahl: One line from this movie that it always sticks with me is James Van Der Beek. And he's, I think he's looking at the coach and he says, i don't want your life.

Julian Contreras Jr: He's talking to his dad.

Kendahl: His dad, that's who it is. His dad. That's right.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: So he's like, I just, I remember that because at the time, remember, okay, y'all have to remember Julian and I, unfortunately we're old.

Kendahl: In this moment, I was roughly kind of in the same position with my dad. He was like, you need to go to work and you need to do this and you need to you know earn a living. And I was trying to figure out where I was going to go to school. And at the time I was singing in a choir,

Kendahl: And i was I was wanting to like go do other things. I wanted to move out of state and i wanted to do all these these things in my life. And my dad was like, you're going do this. And I remember having so a similar line to my dad is, I don't want your life. I don't want what you're doing in your life.

Kendahl: I wanted my own. And so that line stuck with me from the like this film.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: If there's anything that stuck with me besides maybe a little bit of whipped cream, i hands down cannot forget this movie from that moment.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. ah That's one of the, one of the lines that I definitely remember. It's still quoted. Like every time I say it, I say it just like he does with that terrible accent.

Kendahl: Yep. A little twang.

Julian Contreras Jr: But I really liked the football scenes. I thought they were really cool, really well done.

Kendahl: Yeah. Yeah. You felt it.

Julian Contreras Jr: At the time, i had no idea who Paul Walker was. And I was like, oh, Lance Harbor. he He's got it all. He's i got the arm. And then Moxon plays football. And I don't know if they can really play football like this.

Julian Contreras Jr: Let's be honest. But what they made it look like was crazy. Because I was in high school at the time. i was like, well, they're playing football way different than my high school football teams playing.

Kendahl: hmm.

Kendahl: i'm I'm pretty sure if I remember right, I remember them doing some, um I remember reading something about how they were on a pretty like rigorous athletic schedule during that time to like coordinate plays, to coordinate um the yeah the different scenes, to make sure it looked as realistic as possible.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. Let's just go ahead. Let's talk about some of the main scenes that we remember. Obviously those are some of the most quoted ones. I don't want your life and hooking ladder on one, hooking ladder on one, right?

Julian Contreras Jr: That's a really good one.

Kendahl: um um I remember, okay, so the, like, there's a few scenes, I don't know. um Like the one scene where, when they're, they're at the house ah partying, um where, where, um you know, they're, they're kind of talking about to Billy Bob.

Kendahl: I can't, trying to remember when they're, they're all sitting on like a dryer something. And well, you know what i mean?

Julian Contreras Jr: they're not all sitting on a dryer it's just darcy sitting on the dryer

Kendahl: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But no, I just, I remember, um I just remember that, that scene again, was like, I thought to myself, if like, if, if I, was thinking college wise, cause I think, um,

Kendahl: at the again at the time I was trying to figure out myself right. And I just I felt like that was a cool party scene. Like I was like, Okay, I want that I want to be i want to have friends like that I want to have I want to have a group of people that I can hang out, chat, drink with hang out with. Like that was a big scene to me. i don't know. I don't know why. But that was just that was um that was one another one of those.

Kendahl: I wanted that.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. I unfortunately never had a party scene like that. I was not as cool as these guys. I didn't play high school football.

Kendahl: No.

Julian Contreras Jr: i didn't I wasn't invited to those parties. I had 007 GoldenEye parties at my house with pizza and watched this movie.

Kendahl: Yep. Yeah. Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: So...

Kendahl: But yeah, i I don't know.

Julian Contreras Jr: Oh, in the classroom?

Kendahl: I mean, dude, there's so many different scenes. um I remember. So the. um Like, I remember when he was um when they were pushing Billy Bob and he was getting really like all sweaty and um like just.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: Yeah. And like that was another scene that to me that I don't know. I just i just again, one of those I remember. Right. Just something that. Popped out to me, but then I.

Julian Contreras Jr: Oh, when they are ah doing the sex education and she's having them say a bunch of stuff.

Kendahl: Yeah, yeah, yeah, but OK. But but you know what? OK, so but you know what else I noticed in that film that was like a big thing to me was that regardless of that dude's size, He's still like everybody.

Kendahl: Everybody wanted him. You know what I mean? They wanted to be friends with him. that i mean, there were girls that wanted him like it was just that that dude, regardless of his size, he was the the I'm trying to use words that are appropriate. King of the walk.

Kendahl: yeah You know, Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay, I got you. Yeah, I mean, because he was the protector for Lance. the He grew up with those four boys.

Kendahl: right

Julian Contreras Jr: They played football since we were little kids. And so, yeah, he was just included with the cool group.

Kendahl: Everything. a Right. Well, and then everything about him was. um Was just genuine. He was just a just he was a genuinely like it seemed like a even though, i you know, in real life, it seemed like he was a good person, too. But like I think that the Billy Bob character was just supposed to be that like he's just there for you.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. And he, he unfortunately did get that head injury when he was ah leading him into the touchdown. He took a hit from two guys at the head at the same time. It was pretty violent, but yeah, the coach just gets him up and puts it back in and talks him up and says, Hey, you're going to play.

Julian Contreras Jr: He's like, well, I don't think the nurse should let, she doesn't want me to play.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: He's like, well, she doesn't have a state championship to win. Does she?

Kendahl: Right?

Julian Contreras Jr: And so,

Kendahl: You got better things to do in your life, yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. Why don't you just take advantage of the not going to class to sit here, relax, and I'll see you practice at four. And that's just who the coach Kilmer was. All he cared about was winning his 23rd district championship.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm. Right?

Julian Contreras Jr: And it was just that whole thing. And then in the locker room at the end where they're given Wendell the shot,

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: He's like, don't do it.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: Don't do it. And then Paul Walker goes in there. He's like, but i I would know the ramifications of this because his knee was so scar tissueed up because they just kept injecting him so he could play.

Kendahl: They don't.

Julian Contreras Jr: And unfortunately, he blew out his knee and he wasn't going to go to Florida State.

Kendahl: Yep.

Julian Contreras Jr: This whole movie, there's a lot of stuff.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: And at first you're like, well, why is this rated R? And then you get to the scene where they go out.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: no

Kendahl: it it it

Julian Contreras Jr: They go to a strip club in Texas and they got a free ride.

Kendahl: anything

Julian Contreras Jr: They got drinks all night, which apparently that's a thing, but who comes out on center stage to hop for teacher,

Kendahl: Right.

Kendahl: Oh my gosh.

Julian Contreras Jr: ah miss Davis.

Kendahl: And that was like, and the funny thing is, is so I, again, going back to the soundtrack. So I heard that soundtrack, listened to that song, hadn't seen the movie yet.

Kendahl: Go to see the movie. Or I rent the movie because I didn't get to see it in theaters because it came out in 2019. Right. So we were seven, we were 17.

Julian Contreras Jr: No, no, 1999.

Kendahl: That's what I meant. Sorry. 1999. We were, I'm saying we were 17. Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay, yeah.

Kendahl: And so I didn't have somebody that could take me to go see it. So I didn't get to see it in theaters. I had to rent it to watch it. Right. So I had to, I had to wait till came out to video.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: So I rent it to watch it. And I see that scene forever changed that song.

Julian Contreras Jr: I can see that, i can see And to to quote another line in that,

Kendahl: who

Julian Contreras Jr: Tan!

Kendahl: That's one of the best Billy Bob moments. Oh, my gosh.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: So, I mean, ah there's so many – I think the thing is, is this this movie, because it came out, I think, was it late ninety nine

Julian Contreras Jr: yeah It's so good.

Julian Contreras Jr: I didn't get a month, but...

Kendahl: um I don't remember either. But the point is, is so i mean I remember it coming in later in the year. And it it came around the year of our senior year.

Kendahl: I just remember that. I remember seeing this.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: like The movie itself came around in our senior year in high school. And so there were so many things I was like, yes, I want that. Or I want to be that. I wanted i wish I'd had that in high school.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. It was totally made for people our age.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: And if you hate the movie, that's totally fine. But for me at that age, this movie revolving around everything I liked at the time, I felt like this spoke to me.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: That's why I've seen it so many times. boot and rally i could say a lot of lines from this movie but oh way later

Kendahl: Well...

Kendahl: And when did Friday Night Lights come out? want to say that was... Yeah, yeah, yeah. But like this this was one of those films that got me into more of the like football films.

Julian Contreras Jr: yeah and the fact that these guys they pretty much ran the town

Kendahl: So...

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: at their age at 17 and I hear I'm at 17 and I'm asking my mom for 20 bucks I can go to the movies. You know, I'm not getting free drinks at the bar or playing my first football game and I'm throwing a 40 yard pass and I'm going to buy a Coke.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: And the guy at the gas station just hands me a six pack and goes, ah, your money's not good here. That stuff didn't happen to me, but I felt like watching this movie, I could relate to maybe this could happen.

Julian Contreras Jr: Like if I just worked out more, if I went to try out for football that next year, maybe that could be me.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Kendahl: Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: And I feel like that's what movies, yeah, theyre I mean, some of them are downers.

Kendahl: Are meant to be.

Julian Contreras Jr: There are downer movies and they're supposed to be downers, Kendall. But there are movies that want you to look at a character and resonate with that character and maybe dye your hair. Maybe try to be like Lance Harbor.

Julian Contreras Jr: Just go extra hard, you know?

Kendahl: Mm-hmm. I mean, we all hope for those whipped cream moments.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. yeah Did you know that that they actually had to use shaving cream because whipped cream wasn't sticking?

Kendahl: That's what I heard. ah And if you don't know what we're talking about, go watch the movie.

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay, good. You mean...

Julian Contreras Jr: You mean you never seen Darcy in her whipped cream bikini? Uh, no.

Kendahl: Oh, my gosh.

Kendahl: oh my gosh

Julian Contreras Jr: But I feel like this conversation, we've we run it dry. But I hope we've at least sparked you to go watch it again or watch it for the first time for younger people out there.

Kendahl: Yeah, yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: You're going to like it. It might be dated to you, especially if you were born in 2001. It's definitely going to be dated. But you're still going have fun.

Kendahl: I don't know. I think this is one of those movies that actually still holds up a little bit, you know, personally.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, I didn't. When I watched it just recently, I was like, okay, yeah, this is still just as cool as I remember it.

Kendahl: Because there's not a lot of things that are like, oh, like movies that like heavily focus on technology about the time frame. It throws it off because it's like, that's just so dated. But this doesn't have any of that. This is just genuine ball playing, kids having fun, partying, strip club moments.

Kendahl: ah

Julian Contreras Jr: All right. I feel like we've come back. We've had some downers, but we're back in it. I'm done crying. um I'm glad that you're here for me and I'm here for you.

Julian Contreras Jr: And we're both here to do this show to hopefully bring a smile to other people's faces. And you haven't seen Varsity Blues or any of these other movies, shows that we've talked about and you enjoy them, please reach out.

Julian Contreras Jr: ah Shut off, turn on is our Instagram. Let us know. I'll put a post up, but I'm just glad you guys are out there listening.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: We have fun here.

Kendahl: And, you know, just remember, like this is, I know, i know that Julian and I, sometimes we don't always have the most consistent schedule with putting stuff out. And that really just, it's becomes too, we're just two normal guys that have jobs and lives and wives and things to do. And, you know, things that happen to us that take us away, but it doesn't mean we don't,

Kendahl: absolutely love and and are gracious to the support that you guys do give us in the show. So as long as whoever you are that downloaded the entire library of the show, um i we're still going to do this.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, there was a two people. I think one downloaded the entire library. where did Who did I text?

Kendahl: That was me.

Julian Contreras Jr: What country was it? Was it France?

Kendahl: France, France.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, whoever's listening to us in France to download the entire library. Hey, we're here for you, guy or a girl. Doesn't matter. There was somebody else, I think, in the US that download the entire library.

Julian Contreras Jr: And huge shout out to all of you, all of you listeners, all of you ticket holders.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: you keep us going. Like I see the numbers. Kendall can't see the numbers, but this is so much fun for both of us to do. And I promise that we will be back very soon. Cause we have scream seven to talk about. We have a new show coming out on HBO called DTF St. Louis. That looks really, really good,

Kendahl: Oh, that looks interesting, yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: but we'll be back very soon. And this is the point where I give Kendall a second to talk.

Kendahl: Oh, my my go to this week is ah do something different.

Julian Contreras Jr: So Kendall,

Kendahl: Do something different. That thing that you've always been like, ha I'm going to you know, I want to try that. But you're too scared to do it. Stop it. Just go do it. Go find it. Go buy it. Just do it. Because I promise you, if you've been thinking about it a lot and if you're anything like me and it becomes like a dog with a bone moment.

Kendahl: it It ain't going to go away. The itch isn't going to get scratched unless you do it. And I promise you, even if it sucks, even if it sucks, the thrill of buying it and waiting for it, the thrill of deciding to get that ticket and go and seeing it, and or the thrill of you know trying something new, that's what we need in this life.

Kendahl: those Those really fun, random moments to try something, do something different. Go do it. Go do it.

Julian Contreras Jr: Very nice. right. Until next time, wangers on the glass at the Alano Club.

Kendahl: And don't forget, turn on something good.
