Kendahl: Alrighty then, well there's a movie reference for you. Good evening, good afternoon, good morning. I hope everything is going well in your world. This is Shut Off, Turn On, and I am your host, Kendall, today, and that is...

Julian Contreras Jr: I'm Julian over here, just hanging out.

Kendahl: With a little bit of slow on the uptake, it's all right. So it's we are recording this just 48 hours before Turkey Day.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: So we're we're hoping to...

Julian Contreras Jr: Yes.

Kendahl: What?

Julian Contreras Jr: I said, yeah, we're trying to get this episode out there before you guys all get to your families, I guess.

Kendahl: Before we have all the the turkey and football and who knows what, right

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: So, but in any case, how are you?

Julian Contreras Jr: Doing okay. Just a busy week. Had a lot of fun coming out of a really fun weekend, I guess. If you so went to the theater and braved all those crowds.

Kendahl: Nice.

Kendahl: Oh, we are a hundred percent going talking about that.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, and then other than that, is that is it. Carolina lost last night. that i not Not expected, but I was hoping they could pull it off.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, they did not.

Kendahl: i I can be honest. I'm not too far off. Like, I just, I feel like it's been a bit of a kind of lazy going week.

Kendahl: I know it's been a couple of weeks since we've been at this point in the conversation, but the, I mean, the funny thing is, is I did have some plans over the weekend and we'll get to that.

Kendahl: it's some, you know, some wicked good fun.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: OK, nice, subtle, very subtle.

Kendahl: But no, I got to say, OK, so we talked about a couple of movies this on our last podcast. We were going to talk about Running Man and talk about Now You See Me, Now You Don't.

Julian Contreras Jr: Mm-hmm.

Kendahl: And the funny thing was, is I... went to try to go get tickets. And because of some crazy big movie that was coming out, I, the the theater didn't have any tickets for anything other than Wicked. It was it.

Kendahl: It was, and then all these other, yeah, it was like all these little tiny, no nonsense, nobody cares about movies were playing, but it was like they dedicated every theater they could find to that screening.

Julian Contreras Jr: Oh, really? You have one of those theaters?

Kendahl: And so, yeah, I tried.

Julian Contreras Jr: I'm not going to say that's not a good idea because, i mean, with that I don't know the numbers because you looked those up for us.

Kendahl: I did.

Julian Contreras Jr: So we will we will get to those.

Kendahl: And we will talk about him. We will talk about it.

Julian Contreras Jr: But yeah, I could see smaller theaters just saying, no, nothing else is playing this weekend. This is all we're doing.

Kendahl: Right. Yeah. Well, and I was kind of surprised because I was like, oh, right. Well, because it wasn't that we didn't want to go see Wicked. We we did. We had tickets for it. But we also were like, OK, maybe we can go on Saturday and go see something. And I tried to get tickets for so I tried. to we tried to get for Running Man. And it was like 12 o'clock in the afternoon. That was the only ticket. of it There was one showing. And then for now you see me, now you don't. It was like some stupid morning. And I'm like, no, no, you're putting these as times because, you know, nobody's going to see it.

Kendahl: And then that same theater that night was showing Wicked, that that same like you know actual like film theater, that room.

Julian Contreras Jr: yeah.

Kendahl: And so it was just like, man, they just dedicated every single space possible to the to this film. so But before we get to Wicked, because we'll get there, I want to know, did you see anything this past week that was like you know out of your norm or...

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. So it's the last recording with Cass, our guest. There was Derry episodes four and five. Five was just on Sunday and Pennywise finally made his appearance. It was amazing.

Julian Contreras Jr: so cool to watch the director and writer of this show has a great idea of what he wants to do with Pennywise. And he says right at the end of the episode that he did not want to bring him out in episodes one, two, three, or even four. He waited till five to build up that suspense and make it exactly the way he wanted it to be.

Julian Contreras Jr: And it was pretty awesome. I thought,

Kendahl: i have I have read a few... I don't want to call them reviews, hot takes. We'll call them hot takes. And that's that's a very close to almost every one of them was just like it was worth the wait.

Kendahl: It was absolutely worth the wait. It was exactly what they were hoping. The suspense led them to that moment and they did not let down.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, they were down in the sewers and they're looking for it. They don't know what it is, really. They call it the entity or it it lives down there.

Kendahl: hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: And they're looking for him and the footsteps get heavier and heavier and it's a really dark tunnel. And i I'm sitting there geeking out. I'm like, oh my gosh, he's he's coming. He's coming.

Julian Contreras Jr: And he popped out of the dark and scared the two guys as like a an it version of Uncle Sam. And it wasn't was pretty cool.

Kendahl: Awesome. Awesome.

Julian Contreras Jr: But I'm hoping you guys are watching. I'm hoping you watch. I don't know if you have HBO Max. a It's not called Max anymore. It's just HBO.

Kendahl: It's, yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: But with talking about that, I do want to bring up, you remember a little while ago I said I had finished the challenge for the virtual walk for Pennywise?

Kendahl: Yeah.

Kendahl: Yes. Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: with the conqueror so the metal finally came and i want to show you this thing kendall and i'll post a picture on instagram for everybody else to see uh not sponsored but you know i might as well be at this point because i've been telling everybody about it so i'm going to show you look at this thing right there in the camera it's there's the back of it it's got the loser club on it but then he does this

Kendahl: Okay.

Kendahl: Oh, that's awesome.

Kendahl: Yep. All

Julian Contreras Jr: opens up and there's his dead lights and then if you look on the back there's little georgie looking in the sewer yeah and it's got the little red balloon that says i heart dairy yeah so the conqueror challenge it's super fun if you need a little extra motivation just basically walking around or working out and get miles in

Kendahl: Oh, in the sewer. Nice.

Kendahl: That's awesome.

Julian Contreras Jr: I think it's a very fun way to go because some of these medals are super cool. Like I actually love this one because I'm a huge Pennywise fan. So that will be hung up downstairs. But even like this little box.

Kendahl: That's cool.

Julian Contreras Jr: So he hides in this little window and there's a sewer.

Kendahl: Nice. Nice.

Julian Contreras Jr: So super cool.

Kendahl: Nice.

Julian Contreras Jr: Check it out. The Conqueror Challenge. If you want to get the Pennywise medal, just get in there and then walk 89 miles and then you're done. And then just wait.

Kendahl: hey It seems challenging, but I'll tell you, so I'm feeling like I should have done something like that for this as well. But we did we we did something called Walktober.

Kendahl: And Walktober went from the 1st of October through like the, don't know, like a week and a half into November. And i I got my numbers back the other day and it 439,000 steps.

Julian Contreras Jr: Wow.

Kendahl: 439,000 steps. And I mean, i don't, I cannot remember how many steps is a mile. I think it's like 5,000 steps or something like that. Right. So we'll just, we'll just throw that out there.

Julian Contreras Jr: Something, yeah.

Kendahl: And that means, oops, that means I walked 87.8 miles.

Julian Contreras Jr: and You'd be right there.

Kendahl: yeah

Julian Contreras Jr: You could have one of these special medals. Yeah.

Kendahl: I know, right? I should have done That's all I'm saying. I should have done it. I could have conquered two things at once. And, uh, but I mean, and, and that's, in all honesty, that was an average out of about between eight and 10,000 steps a day.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: So it seems like it's a lot, but it's really not.

Julian Contreras Jr: yeah

Kendahl: It's, it, it ends up being something that I think most people don't realize how much they walk.

Julian Contreras Jr: yeah i'm doing a couple little challenges before the new year and then i really want to do the entire lord of the rings walk It's seven medals and it's thousands of miles, I think.

Kendahl: Okay.

Julian Contreras Jr: So it'll be very challenging.

Kendahl: Hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: I'll keep you all updated on that, but that's something in fun I'm doing for the new year. Just a little extra.

Kendahl: All right, so I got to ask you, side shift a little bit.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, go ahead.

Kendahl: So Black Ops 7 came out. have you Have you even tried playing it yet?

Julian Contreras Jr: ha No, no. We're getting into the video game talk.

Kendahl: Just for half a second.

Julian Contreras Jr: No, this, it looks absolutely terrible. I'm not even going to try it. I'm glad you are. I'm trying to get you over with me into the little Fortnite area.

Julian Contreras Jr: i don't know what it's going to take, but I'm, I just can't wait for them to throw that landmine out there using their terms for you just to give up.

Kendahl: I know. yeah

Kendahl: Maybe they do a crossover.

Julian Contreras Jr: No, there's never going to be a crossover.

Julian Contreras Jr: no

Kendahl: So, OK, so besides that, though, I wasn't that's that actually wasn't the main point of my conversation. My my actual main point of like of the conversation was, have you seen the game Ark Riders?

Julian Contreras Jr: I have not seen it. I've been asked if i have played it yet. i was just asked today, actually.

Kendahl: OK. i I have i I also have been asked multiple times if I have played this game and it is just dominating every bit of gaming news out there right now. And so if you don't if you don't know what this game is, it is it supposedly it's like hands down the one of the greatest games that's come out in the last 10 years.

Kendahl: They've I'm sorry, Raiders, not writers.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yep.

Kendahl: it It has just been dominating every inch of news cycles for what is gaming. And I mean, we do entertainment, right? That's what that's the whole point of this show is is is really just movies and TV shows, but it's kind of entertainment and all. And like Ark Raiders is...

Kendahl: Just this comes out of left field and nobody was really thinking about it. And so far it has, i mean, it has one of the best, I'm i'm looking it up right now. It has, what it has like almost a perfect score on the review cycles. I'm trying to look at IGN and I think they gave it almost a perfect score. It's just, it's so stupid good.

Kendahl: And the visuals, i don't know if you've seen the visuals on this yet. It is just crazy cool. And I keep thinking back, do you remember, do you remember when Bioshock came out and how like crazy good that was?

Julian Contreras Jr: Yes.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, I never played it myself, but I watched my brother play it.

Kendahl: This kind of,

Kendahl: See, and I was obsessed with Bioshock. Like, I literally i literally just got like beyond obsessed with it to the point where I played all of them, and I've played all of them at least twice. And like the very last part of, I don't like doing other reviews on this, but one of the very last things on this IGN review, if you guys know anything about IGN, they're huge gaming, like just overall news channel thing.

Kendahl: website. I don't know. uncom And it says for years, I've been wondering when someone would take the awesome promise of a genre to the next level. And arc Raiders is without question what everyone has been waiting for.

Kendahl: and And they're talking about the first person shooter, right? With a combination of open world and, you know, NPCs. But also, this is a squad based game. So like the reason it caught it got in my mind was because you were talking Fortnite, which is a squad based game. You know, in many aspects, there's part of Fortnite that is squad based. And that's what this is too, right? So you have this multiplayer position of it.

Kendahl: You can do solo if you wanted to. And it's all in fighting these like crazy, cool alien robots. So if you if you haven't seen anything on it, i I'm telling you, if you're anywhere remotely into the gaming world, go look up our creators.

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.

Kendahl: It just the cinematics alone are just bonkers good. And so I I had to talk about it. I just I saw it. I had to talk about it

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.

Julian Contreras Jr: No, it works for me. I like I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard so much about it that, you know what, this is the push that I need to go out and check it out some more.

Kendahl: just go Just go throw up some like YouTube videos on on reviews. I'll even send you i'll send you a couple of Instagram reels of just some cool cinematic moments in the game, and you'll see what I'm talking about. Just beautiful, beautiful game.

Kendahl: But anyhow, so my question is, do you want to just jump into the big part that is our our podcast today?

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. the Yeah. I don't have anything fun to say about it. Just go ahead.

Kendahl: all Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: It was what it was.

Kendahl: Well, I mean, exactly. Okay. So just as a bring into the topic, wicked for good. Uh, obviously Wicked came out last year, around November.

Kendahl: And, you know, it's funny. It actually didn't even click into my head until yeah i think it was yesterday when I was thinking about this podcast that, I was like, why did they choose this point to bring this movie out?

Kendahl: Right. Why does at the end of the year, because all the big movies are during in the middle of the year, right. And that summer blockbuster. And it, it, it occurred to me, well, that's because wizard of Oz was released around this same timeframe,

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.

Kendahl: back in its original air date in the 1950s. And so it's because it was a, it was that it was a late year Thanksgiving, Christmas release.

Kendahl: So anyway, just,

Julian Contreras Jr: I would have figured it had to do with a it's the time where kind of families are starting to wrap up and get together. There's fall breaks, so there's chances that more people will go at the exact same time. Bigger groups, if you would say.

Kendahl: I mean, maybe, but it was, it says, oh, it's 39. Wow, 39. I'm so sorry. So it was late August, early September.

Kendahl: And so it looks like it stayed in theaters and like became more popular towards the holiday time frame. Because it became... and Back then, if you remember movies...

Kendahl: Well, you and I remember movies stayed in theaters for a long time.

Julian Contreras Jr: What?

Kendahl: We were 1939, people.

Julian Contreras Jr: How old do you

Kendahl: Not but back when we were kids. Late ninety s early two thousand Movies would stay in the theater... for two or three months at a time. It didn't it didn't sit for 30 days and then and then you couldn't like me find a single theater that would show it.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: It was just it it sat for for for weeks and weeks on end. And so. So, yeah, with it releasing in September, it was shown all the way through November, which.

Kendahl: I was thinking maybe that was a relationship to it, but I'm guessing not. So see, this is this is the real me, people. I'm thinking and it doesn't actually have to be anything.

Julian Contreras Jr: But it's out there now, so we're totally fine.

Kendahl: It is. So in any case, so Wicked for Good is the second half of Wicked that came out last year. And obviously we're talking about the Broadway play. This is the adaptation of it.

Kendahl: If you have no idea what we're talking about, I apologized for the rock that you have stayed under for way too long. And if you've chosen not to see this for any reason, why and who hurt you?

Kendahl: That's all I'm saying.

Julian Contreras Jr: It's just musicals. Like, if you don't like them, you don't like them. I wouldn't say you're hiding under a rock you don't have to go watch it.

Kendahl: I mean, if you don't know about it, you're hiding under a rock. this is That's just plain and simple.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: But we're living in maybe North Korea.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, it's been everywhere.

Julian Contreras Jr: Oh, my gosh.

Julian Contreras Jr: Sounds good. All right.

Kendahl: but

Julian Contreras Jr: Let's jump in. what What did you think of this this part?

Kendahl: Okay. My two cents are... I genuinely felt like... This went really fast.

Kendahl: I liked it. i mean, I did. i i I liked the film a lot. it It obviously was a lot of fun. There was still... you know, same good cast, same great acting, same vocals. But it moved a lot faster than the first one.

Kendahl: I mean, which makes sense, right? Because if you're thinking about a play, you have the beginnings that's building everything up. You have the climactic moment, which is the end of, you know, defying gravity.

Kendahl: That's the climactic point. Now it's the downhill shift to the to the end, right? And this kind of falls into that that avenue, right?

Julian Contreras Jr: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Kendahl: But That's okay. i honestly, it's two hours and what, 15, 20 minutes long It doesn't feel like it. It absolutely doesn't feel like it. i I didn't even realize that we were coming to the end of the film, but I'm at a theater that you can buy drinks and and food and all that, right? And they're bringing me my check. And that's like, that that's the, hey, by the way, the movie's almost over. And you're like, dang you, you're ruining it. Because now you realize there's only like 30 minutes left in the film. But that was that moment. That was a cue for me going, oh man, it's been two hours already?

Kendahl: So, I mean, that was that's cool. like that about it. I have a couple of things that I didn't like about it.

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.

Kendahl: Do you want to get to that or do you want to put in your two cents of what you liked?

Julian Contreras Jr: oh i'll I'll go and then I'll see if they correspond with each other because we have not talked about this.

Kendahl: Sounds great.

Julian Contreras Jr: We wanted to be fresh with each other. So i like to...

Kendahl: yeah I mean, we did we text back and forth. we We did text back and forth and we were like, hey, hey, hey.

Julian Contreras Jr: Huh?

Kendahl: But that that was the problem is that we're like we we hold we held off to the to the real conversation until this moment.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. Yes. I appreciated that it was faster paced. There was not the lol that I call the pawn scene.

Julian Contreras Jr: from the first one where you're like, oh my gosh, what is happening?

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: This is 20 minutes and you're nothing's going on. This one kind of skips that and it has to go boom boom, boom, boom, boom.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: This is what's happening. This is the character we're doing. This is what's happening because they have so much to cover and they don't have defying gravity that is the end that you're looking forward to.

Julian Contreras Jr: You can't sing that song again

Kendahl: Right, yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: So you have to come up with something else. So they did. They had two new songs that you have the names for, which they were faster songs.

Kendahl: Yep. Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: Like it didn't drag the movie down because they were new.

Kendahl: Yeah, so.

Kendahl: Yeah, so the the two songs are No Place Like Home, which Cynthia Reville plays Elphaba and Elphaba is in the woods with the animals and she's singing this song to kind of correlate to or almost pay homage to the original Wizard of Oz, it seems like, because, you know, remember, she says there's no place like home three times, goes to whatever.

Kendahl: And that's OK. mean, it wasn't a bad song, but it was OK. And then the second one is the girl in the bubble. And one of the things that I did read about the song was if they didn't have this song, there really wasn't another like solo moment for for Glinda or Ariana Grande to to be center stage moment within this part of Wicked.

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.

Kendahl: So those are the two new ones.

Julian Contreras Jr: I did enjoy that one more so, but I did like all the CGI animals hanging out with Alphaba as she was singing that other song.

Kendahl: Correct.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: So, with those new songs included, I thought it was okay. there I definitely did not like it as much as the first one. I think I gave the first one an 8.5 or a 9.

Julian Contreras Jr: That is definitely not where I sit on this one.

Kendahl: All right. So just to throw it out there, where do you sit with this one?

Julian Contreras Jr: And I don't know

Julian Contreras Jr: It's a solid seven.

Kendahl: All right. It's almost just a hair off of a seven, right?

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: Yeah. Agreed.

Julian Contreras Jr: and it's There's nothing wrong with the movie. It's still really good. It ends the story really, really well. I liked the new ending to it where they added Ariana and her part.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: You know, I'm just going to say it. She gets the power to read the book.

Kendahl: Yeah, the Grimery opens up for her.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, that does not happen in any other story. That was strictly for the theater. So we had, i guess, a happier ending with all the dark stuff that happened.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: And she goes away and she takes somebody with her. There is all that cool aspect. But what I want to as you can tell from the episode title that I wrote for this, and I text you this,

Julian Contreras Jr: Bach. Oh my goodness. They did him so dirty. There is no happy ending for that character.

Kendahl: They did. Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: At all. Like he's the Tin Man. And he's got nobody. He's got nothing. He's got no heart. They could go with the Wizard of Oz ending. But everyone else has their stuff.

Julian Contreras Jr: And the Scarecrow ends up where he does. If you've seen the movie you know what we're talking about. If you haven't I don't want to ruin it yet. But the poor Bach. Oh my gosh. This guy.

Julian Contreras Jr: the roughest two or three years in his life.

Kendahl: yeah

Kendahl: Well, and the funny thing is, is they, I feel like, so, comparative to the play, there's so much more, like, development, I guess, of his character in the position of where and why he becomes Ten Man, in a sense.

Julian Contreras Jr: Mm-hmm.

Kendahl: That's not in the play. That's not there. i mean, it's just not a part of that. And then his his just anger that like follows.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: I mean, Nessa Rose did do him dirty because she was like, oh yeah, go ahead.

Kendahl: a

Julian Contreras Jr: You can leave. Totally fine. Soon as he gets to the train station, it's like, oh yeah, by the way, you can't travel without a permit from Nessa.

Kendahl: Right. Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: And then he's like, wait, what? what And he sees it on the wall. He's like, I i see what she did.

Kendahl: Yep. and know And she's like, and he's like, oh, he's like, don't worry, I'll see you again. And she's like, oh, I know.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: So it kind of it kind of develops the whole like why she becomes or what she is of the wicked w wicked wicked witch of the East.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: And

Kendahl: Like there's that I think that was the intent behind it is that they develop that that negative sense of why she becomes that term.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, I don't know. It didn't deter me. That one didn't have anything to do with my rating. I just feel really bad for him. i mean, I talked to my wife about it. He did kind of like lead her on that he was interested, but he was just doing it for Glinda.

Julian Contreras Jr: And then he wanted to go.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: as soon as he found out she was getting married, he was like, oh, shoot, I got to go. And I got to tell her how I feel and hopefully change her mind.

Kendahl: Right.

Kendahl: Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: So, yeah.

Kendahl: So for me, the negative part for me was, was well, there was two things. One, I felt like the the buildup of the relationship that was in this this movie, without trying to give too much away, felt like it didn't feel right. like the the The character's dynamic did not, to me...

Kendahl: mesh. Do you know what I mean? Like sometimes you have those relationships on film and you're just like, wow, are they together? Because that was that was pretty genuine. Like you could feel the motion. You can feel the the, you know, I'll say that's like the sexual tension at times or that like sense of like wanting to be with each other. Like there's you could feel that just by watching them on screen. And in this one, I felt like it was forced.

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay, I can see that.

Kendahl: i just didn't And it's not to say that that relationship is forced. I'm saying between the two of them, I don't see or feel that in watching it, that sense of them in that connection. Like that connection just didn't seem to be made in those moments, right?

Julian Contreras Jr: okay

Kendahl: To then add to that, spoiler somewhat,

Kendahl: when you find out about the Scarecrow Man, there's not a much... Like, he's not even on screen for more than 30 seconds. You're like, oh, you're gone. Okay. no Okay.

Julian Contreras Jr: I mean, they did take him out to the cornfields and they were gave him a whooping that you could see in those little flash frames.

Kendahl: Barely.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: Yeah, exactly. Barely. i just...

Julian Contreras Jr: Wow. Yes.

Kendahl: I feel like... That part of the film just, I get it. I get it because you you think to what is on the Broadway play.

Kendahl: I know that there's, there's, you have to be able to migrate some of that stuff to the film. But at the same time, I just, i don't know. I feel like there was some parts that they could have, they, they embellished and played around with some other parts of this play.

Kendahl: Why did they, why did they leave that at such a point? Like, why didn't you embellish that just a little bit? Because that would have created a little bit more, to me, of a dynamic in that that element of what would become the ending of this movie.

Kendahl: right i

Julian Contreras Jr: All right.

Kendahl: Now here's my second part to all that. Or not second part. I guess here's here's the next thing I've got for you. If you were, and I kind of hinted to this in our in our conversation before, if you took the first one and you took the second one and you just slapped them both together and you called it the, you called it wicked like playwright edition or theater edition or set edition, right? So like, you know that this is going to be the entirety of the Broadway play from beginning to end with the intermission in between. It's one long movie.

Kendahl: Then, Would you still have that lower rating for the second half of this movie? Or do you think it would feel more along the lines of a solid, good four and a half hour movie?

Julian Contreras Jr: uh i i think that it would sit somewhere in between i would have a really high score and then a really mediocre score putting them together and then if it was especially if it was four and a half hours and i sat there it would probably sit somewhere around seven and a half or an eight because they would collide with each other right there would be that culmination of defying gravity and that

Kendahl: Okay.

Kendahl: Mm-hmm.

Julian Contreras Jr: the energy it brings to, i guess your body and knowing that song is so powerful. But then after that, you would have two and a half more hours of like, okay, well, can we go, can we go back to that one?

Kendahl: Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: Can they sing that one just like a little bit more?

Kendahl: just Just have a flashback to that for a second. I do have to say, i mean, I think Cynthia Erivo and Ariel Garande's relationship on this was a very big dynamic to it. Now, that is a genuine relationship that I felt was connected. They they were good friends. they They felt the pain. They felt the anguish. They felt the sadness between each other. right they they They felt the heartache of separation. They felt the heartache of having to deal with the different parts of their lives. I i genuinely believe that in those moments of those parts of the film.

Kendahl: And so to me, that is a relationship that was like, wow, they did a good job. Right. They really brought those two really brought it to the screen for obvious reasons.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. Right.

Kendahl: They're obviously I mean, by all main purposes, they are the characters of the show. But I still, you know, I still look at it as the same like you what you're saying. i I feel like there was just it didn't have the same energy in the second half as it did in the first.

Kendahl: Which is typical of a Broadway play, right? or just a play in general, like you that is typical. you know I think of like Hamilton, right?

Julian Contreras Jr: yeah

Kendahl: You wanna put a relationship between two really great, high performing, good, solid, emotional plays. You have Hamilton and you have Wicked. Hamilton, though, I feel like has a couple of those up spikes that you're like, oh, this is how such a good song. And you're like, you're like kind of ramped up from that last little bit. And then it kind of comes back down and then they ramp up again and just has this like a roller coaster emotion through the whole thing.

Kendahl: And I feel like in this one where there could have been, and and you know i I don't have the fortunate effect of being able to see this play in person. I've never seen in play in person.

Kendahl: I know the play from beginning to end.

Julian Contreras Jr: You're missing out.

Kendahl: I've watched the play in in film form of them recording it. I mean, and I can see the lows in that, but I feel like this still didn't catch the highs that could have been in them in that ending portion.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: especially Especially when Glinda and Elphaba meet just after the introduction of Dorothy into the play.

Julian Contreras Jr: Right.

Julian Contreras Jr: So with that all being said, we both liked the movie. I give it a seven. I think you right there-ish. Okay,

Kendahl: i'm Yeah, i'm about as I'm right at seven.

Julian Contreras Jr: so it was a good way to wrap that movie up. Now, I haven't heard anything yet, but when, Kendall, do you think we will get the word that they are doing The Wizard of Oz in this style?

Julian Contreras Jr: And let's just say John Chu does do that.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: I would look forward to it, but we would all know the story.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: I don't know if they he would change anything because it's not a musical. Right. So I have a feeling it'll be in the next two or three years that somebody will be like, we can do it.

Kendahl: I don't know.

Kendahl: So I did read, before we go there, I do want to talk about really quickly, like, okay, so you know, we both gave it a pretty. I mean, we'll say it's a solid score. I mean, it's not a bad movie by any means.

Julian Contreras Jr: Right.

Kendahl: But one of the things to think about. So this did 150 million i here in the States, 226 million worldwide. It was the absolute biggest opening for any Broadway musical adaption of any play that's ever been to the film.

Kendahl: ever so i mean it definitely broke records in that sense so don't take what we're saying and saying

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.

Kendahl: i'll wait no no no no it really is worth going to see just understand that we're talking about this shift that is from the first movie to the second movie But that being said, I did hear rumors that there are possible.

Kendahl: What do you want to call them like spinoffs for Ariana Grande's character of Glinda that they have been already in the talks on?

Julian Contreras Jr: okay

Kendahl: And John Chu is in in the talks of of producing them or directing them.

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay. I'll have to look into that because I enjoy John Chu's work. He does have a good eye for entertainment and everything. So anytime you want to be on the show, we know you're listening.

Kendahl: Well, and...

Julian Contreras Jr: So John Chu, you come on the show whenever you want to.

Kendahl: yeah Well, and so, and Stephen Schwartz has also been part of this. So if if if you don't know, Stephen Schwartz is the, he's the, the original playwright for Wicked, right?

Kendahl: And then he was part of the adaptation process as well. You even saw him in the original one when they're going into the Emerald City. He says, he's the one that says the, the wizard will see you now, right?

Kendahl: So that's, that's Stephen Schwartz.

Julian Contreras Jr: Mm-hmm.

Kendahl: You, you know, you've you've seen him. yeah. it's interesting if that does happen. I, I don't know. I feel like with, I think the wizard of Oz is one of those films. It's like, it's like gone with the wind. You just can't, you can't remake something like that.

Kendahl: But, I mean, we've seen over the years they remake films and it's like, why? mean, point in case. Why do we have a live version of Moana coming out? We we just saw Moana as a cartoon like yesterday. And now we're doing a live version already?

Kendahl: What?

Julian Contreras Jr: I don't know. I don't know. That's that's not my business on that one.

Kendahl: whoo Who asked for that?

Julian Contreras Jr: They can do what they want with their money.

Kendahl: Oh. Just Disney. Disney, i you know what, Disney, again, we we know you're listening. We know that you are absolutely on the edge of every single one of our releases for a podcast.

Kendahl: Just stop it. Just stop. no one No one asked for it.

Julian Contreras Jr: Well...

Kendahl: No one asked for it.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, but the same thing, you loved How to Train Your Dragon. And I know that's not Disney, but you loved it.

Kendahl: that's That's a complete difference.

Julian Contreras Jr: You gave it a 10.

Kendahl: That was 20 years. That was 20 years separated.

Julian Contreras Jr: All right, all right.

Kendahl: i mean i mean, come on that's it was i mean Maybe it wasn't 20 years. Maybe it was like 15. I don't know. But still, regardless, i mean you you have you have grown adults now that remember watching that as children. Sure.

Kendahl: i my child remembers watching Moana for the first time and she's still a child in the sense of she's still in elementary school that she hasn't even been able to move out of elementary school before they're like oh yeah do you remember that one film where we made of Moana let's do a live action why not who what Disney Disney Disney

Julian Contreras Jr: I love that I it threw a grenade in there.

Kendahl: Well, I mean, look, they've got their hands in everything anymore. i mean, Disney's got their hands in Fox. They've got their hands in MCU universe. they've they've now Obviously, they've got their hands in everything that is Pixar.

Kendahl: Just make up your mind and stick to it because you're not doing well on the MCU universe. Everybody sees that. i mean, you had a one shot off with you know the Fantastic Four. You know, applaud. Good job. You did something right. Maybe. Maybe. Then you just sucked it up terribly for the rest of the MCU universe. Pixar hasn't made a decent, really good film in a while. I mean, Ilio was yeah okay. It wasn't bad. But name another one over the last five years that's been successful.

Kendahl: Oh, right. You can't because they're terrible. Right?

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, well, you got Predator Badlands in there now.

Kendahl: they're just Pick a lane, Disney. Just saying.

Kendahl: That's you're going down the Fox line again. Like they're, they're just, that's, that's what I'm saying. Like you could do that, I guess. Okay. I'll give it that. that was Sure. Fine. Whatever. Like, okay.

Julian Contreras Jr: right.

Kendahl: So you can have the one-offs in the 30 in between that they threw millions and millions of dollars down the toilet. They're like, let's see if this works.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: And it doesn't. So then let's just keep throwing money everywhere. And then, and then they raise the prices of Disneyland because they say, Oh, we can't make money back. And so then they just do. Disney, pick a lane.

Julian Contreras Jr: All right.

Kendahl: Pick a lane.

Julian Contreras Jr: Okay. All right.

Kendahl: Why?

Julian Contreras Jr: Let's pick a lane. We're going to move on. We're going that off ramp. Right. That's the lane we're choosing right now.

Kendahl: New title. New title. Kendall goes off on a wicked tangent.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.

Kendahl: See, this is what they come for.

Julian Contreras Jr: Uh,

Kendahl: This is what they come for. They they they come to hear me rant and they love it. I know this because they've said so. But at the same time, I'm sorry that I had to go off on like that. We'll maybe edit that later. I don't know.

Julian Contreras Jr: No, that's going in. That's you. That's all you, Mr. Disney over there.

Julian Contreras Jr: I do want to talk about, so now that that's over, where we're looking forward to that. That's done and over with. And it's funny how that happens in the entertainment world. Like you're so amped up to see it. You go opening day, you take your wife when she's supposed to be at work.

Julian Contreras Jr: And then you're like, hey, let's just go see a movie real fast and not tell anybody.

Kendahl: here

Julian Contreras Jr: So we go, we see that and it's over. And now we want to look forward to December 5th, another movie that's coming back to theaters in what Kendall says the full show, Kill Bill, The Whole Bloody Affair.

Kendahl: Oh, wow.

Julian Contreras Jr: This is volume one, volume two, and some deleted scenes, Kendall.

Kendahl: That's cool. Okay.

Julian Contreras Jr: This is not Quentin's new movie.

Kendahl: Okay.

Julian Contreras Jr: He's got, I think he said he wants to do 10 or 12. I don't remember what the quote was, but this isn't it. This is just something special for every Kill Bill fan out there. I believe that's coming to theaters December 5th.

Julian Contreras Jr: And then, of course, December 19th, the one I'm personally looking forward to, the one I need the new movie poster for, but I can't find it.

Kendahl: Yeah. Yep. I dude, I have tried. i have tried to find this. I have found, i found a French version, but I haven't found an American version yet.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. And of course, I am talking about The Housemaid.

Kendahl: Of course we're talking about

Kendahl: the housemate.

Julian Contreras Jr: If you haven't seen the new book cover for this with the Sydney Sweeney and...

Kendahl: Exactly.

Julian Contreras Jr: Oh my gosh. Amanda Seyfried with the keyhole.

Kendahl: There you go.

Julian Contreras Jr: It looks amazing. I can't wait for the movie. I don't care. i i really hope it doesn't bomb. But if it sticks to the story and is fun like the story, I can't wait for it.

Julian Contreras Jr: Super excited to see that one and Kill Bill.

Kendahl: I mean i've seen I've seen a few, i don't want to say early thoughts on it, but there have been a couple of early like film reviews of it. And they're not full reviews, but they have said that it's very close to the book.

Kendahl: So to me, that tells me, I mean, and even so freedom of Fadden was also a major part in the adaptation. So if it's anywhere near the book, which, you know, the book was great.

Kendahl: i I don't I can't see how it would go wrong unless the acting is just phoned in. That's the only thing I can see.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, well, let's not jinx it before it happens.

Kendahl: But yeah. Yeah, yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: But that's all I have for today.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: we covered quite a few things.

Kendahl: Yeah.

Julian Contreras Jr: Sounds like Kendall wants to talk a little bit more about Disney, but I don't know if we'll let him.

Kendahl: You know, maybe next time. Maybe it'll be a solo episode one of these days. Just me screaming at the mic about Disney.

Julian Contreras Jr: all right. I want to wish everyone out there a happy Thanksgiving.

Julian Contreras Jr: If you're listening to this with a family member who hasn't heard us before, hey, welcome to the family. We love that you're here. Everyone have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Careful when you're deep frying those turkeys.

Julian Contreras Jr: Always follow the rules. Not in your garage. Don't do that. Make sure it's fully thought out. Enjoy food. That's what I have to say.

Kendahl: Food, food good.

Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, food good.

Kendahl: Food in belly is good.

Julian Contreras Jr: dude Two words. right. This is your is your platform here.

Kendahl: Ha ha ha ha but

Julian Contreras Jr: I don't know if you want to use it for Disney again.

Kendahl: yeah yeah

Julian Contreras Jr: What do you have for us, buddy?

Kendahl: No. You know what? I'm going to tell you right now. I had a few moments this last week where I remembered some loved ones, some things that were that were told to me, and some lessons that i learned through their life. And this is, I think, that time of year that we can reflect on the good and wonderful things that happen to us.

Kendahl: Again, sometimes it's always the negative and the bad things that take the limelight and the news and all the things in every cycle of social media we have. But the reality is,

Kendahl: there's a lot of amazing things out there, people. Movies, music, Ark Raiders. Not Disney. Stay away from that.

Julian Contreras Jr: Oh my goodness.

Kendahl: Nah, but in all seriousness, find time to love the ones that you love. five time Find time to hug those that you want to hug. Find time to give thanks to those, to the people that helped you, changed you, challenged you, and brought you to where you are today because every single thing that has ever happened to you has made you the person you are, regardless of how good or bad that moment was.

Julian Contreras Jr: Oh my goodness.

Kendahl: And just remember, turn on something good.

Julian Contreras Jr: Until next time, duck and cover kiddos.
