Chaotic Creature in School - Why?

00:00:00
Speaker
So they run back out, their filch is gone. um So they run all the way back to the common room. And once they're inside, they begin to discuss. And Ron says what we're all thinking when he says, what do they think they're doing? Keeping a thing like that locked up in a school, said Ron, finally. If any dog needs exercise, that one does. Thank you, Ron. I asked that question several times a day. Why are they keeping that in the school?
00:00:26
Speaker
And this is supposed to be a school for children. Bro.

Intro & Spoiler Alert

00:00:50
Speaker
Hello everyone and welcome back to Family Fiction with Hallie and Carmen. And today we are going to be discussing chapters 9 through 11 of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Yay! So exciting!
00:01:08
Speaker
Before we get started into any of our discussion for the day, we do want to go ahead and give an alert for spoilers. um There will be spoilers for the rest of this book as well as the rest of the Harry Potter series. So if you don't want to be spoiled, go read the books and then come back and listen to these episodes um because we do um discuss any sort of foreshadowing to other books and further in this book. So just a fair warning there.
00:01:35
Speaker
Um, but before we get into today's discussion, let's do our currently reading.

Current Reads - Romance & Mixed Emotions

00:01:41
Speaker
Hallie, you're up first. Okay, so my currently reading is King of Pride by Anna Huang. This is the second book in the Kings of Sin series. Super exciting. I love it so far. Carmen, what are you currently reading?
00:01:55
Speaker
ha I am currently reading Fake by Tate James. If you've been listening to the past couple of episodes, you know that I've been on a Madison Kate series journey. I'm on the third book. um There are four books. I'm on the third one and I'm almost done with it. And I just, the series has ruined my life in the best way. But yeah.

November Favorites - 'The Sinner' & 'The Bone Ships'

00:02:16
Speaker
um and then also we are doing a book of the month this episode since it is december we technically should have done one last week but i forgot about it being a new month so we're doing it this month so my book of november favorite book of november i have two options on here because honestly if you follow me on instagram you know i keep a monthly like book bracket And it was very hard for me to decide which book to put on my bracket this month for November. um I put The Sinner by Chantal Tessier because it was absolutely amazing. But I did have a hard time deciding between it and Hate by Tate James, which is the first book in the Madison Cate series. So I have those both listed here.
00:03:04
Speaker
Okay so in my book of the month was The Bone Ships by R.J. Barker.

Romance Reading Phase

00:03:11
Speaker
um This is the first in a trilogy and I did not expect to like this as much as I did. This is like a pirate fantasy which normally would turn a lot of people away because you're thinking a lot of terminology and there is terminology but once you figure it out it's not that hard to understand.
00:03:30
Speaker
But my goodness, this was good. And basically think of it as like, Pirates of the Caribbean meets dragons. oh It is very good. And I flew through it. It was very good. I really enjoyed it.
00:03:45
Speaker
Mine were both dark romance in case anybody's wondering the two that I suggested. I'm on a dark romance kick right now. It's been a it's been a rough month and a half in the best ways possible um and I'm gonna continue on a dark romance kick. I told Hallie earlier I am I have so many romance and dark romance books on my shelf contemporary romance and dark romance And that some of them have been sitting on my shelf forever. So I've decided that until Onyx Storm comes out, I'm going to read just straight romance, contemporary romance, dark romance, whatever it is. That's all I'm reading until Onyx Storm comes out. And then I'm breaking the cycle with Onyx Storm. And after that, I'm probably going to read Caven's new book, The Rising Throne, because I can't wait.
00:04:34
Speaker
I need to get into her books. I have a forbidden fate but I've just not gotten around to reading them. Um yeah forbidden fate was really really good. I didn't like the sequel to it as much as the first one. I thought forbidden fate was fantastic and endless escape was good too but it it had some dry parts for me but a fallen sword was amazing and the second one just came out and I can't wait to read it.
00:05:01
Speaker
Anyways, those are our books of the month. um So now we are going to go ahead and get into today's discussion without further ado.

Flying Lessons Begin - Nervous Gryffindors

00:05:11
Speaker
um Like Hallie said, we're discussing chapters 9 through 11 of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling. um So just to go ahead and kick us off, we have chapter 9, The Midnight Duel.
00:05:24
Speaker
ah First year Gryffindors have potions with the Slytherins um and they are going to be learning to do flying lessons um also with the Slytherins. They were excited to only have double potions with the Slytherins and not have any of their classes with them, but then it got announced that they're going to have flying lessons and they're with the Slytherins.
00:05:48
Speaker
So that's fun for them. um Everyone seems to have learned to fly except for Harry and Hermione and Neville. um Neville was never taught how to fly because his gran never wanted to teach him and Harry makes a remark about how that was probably a really good idea. And I'm like me too Harry because Neville would have been tragic.
00:06:10
Speaker
um and then also Hermione like obviously is Malcolm Warren so she never would have learned to fly um but Harry is talking about how all of his friends are talking about how they learn to fly and can do all these neat tricks and so Hermione, Neville, and Harry are feeling very nervous about the flying lessons um mail gets delivered to the great hall and Neville gets a remember roll which is a magical artifact that's supposed to help you remember things that you've forgotten. The only problem is that it turns red when you've forgotten something. It turns red with Neville and Neville can't remember what he's forgotten. Which, it is an odd, like, how are you supposed to remember what you've forgotten? It doesn't tell you what you forgot. It just turns red. At that point you're like, this is even the point of it, if it's not going to tell you what you forgot. Yes.

Neville's Injury & Filming Location Memory

00:07:01
Speaker
So we'll see. Malfoy comes up and takes the Remembrall from Neville. Malfoy's got my Remembrall Professor, which is a little bit of a foreshadowing into what's going to happen further in the chapter.
00:07:15
Speaker
<unk> and um We then get into flying lessons. They get to go out onto the field with Madame Pomfrey and she is gonna teach them as a Madame Pomfrey, Madame Hooch. Madame Hooch. I just had a brain for it. Madame Hooch. I'm sorry. Madame Pomfrey is the freaking nurse. What am I doing? Sorry.
00:07:36
Speaker
They go out on the pitch with Madame Hooch, um which fun little note, I also got to do this where they do it in the movie and the movie they film it at Anak Castle in England. And when I went on a Harry Potter trip in 2017, I got to go to the castle.
00:07:54
Speaker
we got to stand where they stand for the broomstick flying lessons and do broomstick flying lessons and it was very fun and interesting. So I'll be posting those pictures to our Instagram at some point. Dean does go into talking a little bit about um the rules of Quidditch being something similar to soccer. And Ron like has a bunch of soccer slander going on. And I'm just like, Ron, can you back off, buddy? Leave him alone. I'm also a soccer fanatic. So leave Dean alone. I'm with you, Dean.

Who Sends Sweets to Draco? - Speculations

00:08:31
Speaker
I'm with you. um And then one other note that I forgot to talk about the with the mail being delivered, Draco keeps receiving packages of chocolate and candy.
00:08:41
Speaker
Who do we think sending that to him? I know Lucius ain't packing that stuff up and be like, my my son would really like these tarts. It has to be Narcissa. Yeah, I was supposed to say, it's probably Narcissa. I was like, say there's no way it's Lucius. I just imagine Lucius like sitting there tying a bow in a package. Here's my son's candy. I don't know. We then get into the broomstick flying lessons and she tells them all to step up to their brooms and yell up And immediately Harry's brim jumps into his hand and he's already flexing on the rest of them. He's the chosen one. He is. So he just immediately has raw talent. um Neville kicks off a little too hard and takes flight.
00:09:27
Speaker
and falls off of his broomstick hitting the round hard and breaks his wrist. Madame Hooch has to take him to Madame Humphrey. There she is um in the nursing wing of the castle.
00:09:42
Speaker
um And she tells him before she leaves, if any of you try to take flight while I'm gone, you'll be expelled faster than you can say Quidditch. Um, so of course none of them listen to that. And Malfoy quickly takes ah Neville's Remembril and takes off in the year with it. Harry chases him down on a broom after ignoring Hermione's protests. And when Draco throws the Remembril,
00:10:13
Speaker
Harry chases after it, catches it really quickly, and heads off back towards the ground. We gotta appreciate Harry going after it. We gotta appreciate somebody who stands up to bullies. I just, despite breaking the rules, I got, well, to that point, Minerva comes out and instead of expelling Harry, she says, you know what? I'll bend the rules. But like, what if they had exp expelled Harry?
00:10:41
Speaker
it End of story. End of story, credits roll. Bro, for somebody who like really is a stickler for the rules. Well, no, for somebody who has had a really crappy childhood, the fact that this miracle has happened, they're a wizard. this is you know They can make somebody some place their new home. They can have this extraordinary life that they never dreamed of having. He risks expulsion a lot.
00:11:11
Speaker
Like Harry, don't lift it look a gift horse in the mouth, buddy. But it just drives me crazy though with McGonagall. She's very much, like I was saying, she's a stickler for the rules. And it's said very clearly, if you fly, you're expelled. And instead of punishing Harry, he pretty much gets rewarded. He does. Minerva, you're turning into Dumbledore. It's not a good thing. It's preferential treatment all around.
00:11:40
Speaker
Um, McGonagall takes Harry straight to Oliver Wood and tells him they found a new seeker. I just, Minerva's just excited to win again. She's just like, just give me whatever I can get. That's going to help me beat Severus Snape because Severus keeps teasing her. I want to see that interaction too. I want to see Severus Snape teasing McGonagall.
00:12:01
Speaker
Sweet Jesus. Um, Professor McGonagall takes ah Harry to Wood and says, Potter, this is Oliver Wood. Wood, I found you a seeker.

Harry Becomes Seeker - Preferential Treatment?

00:12:12
Speaker
Wood's expression changed from puzzlement to delight. Are you serious, Professor? Absolutely, said Professor McGonagall crisply. The boy's a natural. I've never seen anything like it. Bro.
00:12:23
Speaker
Yes, you have. His name was James Potter. um We did find out that James was also a seeker for the Richmond Door Quidditch team. Like father, like son, it's really starting early.
00:12:36
Speaker
Hey, show up. Hey. And we get a look into the beginning of Woods Obsession with Quidditch because he is very excited to have Harry on the team. And if you have read this series, then you know, that like, Oliver Woods Obsession with Quidditch has become a national phenomenon of Harry Potter memes all over social media.
00:13:00
Speaker
because I can't. Somebody put a thing yesterday I saw that was like the reason the Quidditch pitch got burned in Deathly Hallows is because it was after Oliver Wood graduated. I said that's sad for Oliver. Fred and George come up to Harry in the Great Hall and congratulate him on making the team and tell him you must be good Harry. Wood was almost skipping when he told us.
00:13:26
Speaker
Oh, just picture that.

Malfoy's Duel Challenge - Hermione's Intervention

00:13:28
Speaker
Poor Oliver. um He's passionate. While they're in the Great Hall, Draco does come up to Harry and kind of teases him a little bit about getting in trouble. He thinks that he should be getting expelled. He's like, this must be your last meal. Harry says, I'm not getting expelled. In fact, I've made the Gryffindor Quidditch team and Draco challenges Harry to a duel. What is it with Draco picking fights?
00:13:56
Speaker
I don't know, but Ron also chooses violence because he's also like immediately. Yeah, yeah, he'll do you. I'll be his second. Who's yours? And Ross just like, it's the, it's the standing behind Harry going like, you would want army bro. Like, come on. it's like that me onn It's like that meme where the woman's like yelling and pointing and the cat.
00:14:20
Speaker
Oh gosh, it's just so funny. Like Ron really woke up and chose violence that day. Um, and this is where I made the note that Harry risks expulsion a lot. Again, he is risking expulsion once more to have a midnight duel when he's not supposed to because first years are not supposed to use magic outside of the classroom. And that point is made by our very own Hermione Granger who tries to warn him off of dueling.
00:14:47
Speaker
Um, and we get some Ron and Harry sass when Hermione comes over and says, I couldn't help overhearing what you and Malfoy were saying. Ron steps in, bet you could Ron Munters. And then Hermione goes on to say, it's really very selfish of you. Harry says, and it's really none of your business said Harry. Goodbye said Ron. I can't with the sass like homegirls trying to keep you all from being expelled out of this dang school. And you just keep ignoring her.
00:15:18
Speaker
I can't. Um, Ron declares that he'll be Harry's second and that duels like this, they won't be able to do much with because the most to be able to do is send sparks at one another and Harry makes their mark. What if my wand doesn't even send sparks? And then Ron says, then you throw your wand away and you punch him in the face. I'm like, me too, Ron. Me too.
00:15:48
Speaker
Or maybe not make sparks at all because I don't think Harry casts a single spell. He only knows three, Hallie. We've discussed this. Harry Potter only knows three spells. The boy who knows three spells.
00:15:59
Speaker
um when the boys get get to the hello the boys begin to sneak out of the Gryffindor common room when it hits midnight and they are distracted by Hermione trying to stop them from leaving um in the process of trying to stop them from leaving they exit the common room the door shuts behind her and the fat lady has left her portrait so Hermione is now locked out of the Gryffindor common room i would have a complete time apart So then they start to leave and trip over something in the hallway and realize that it's Neville who has also locked himself out and has been sleeping on the ground. God bless him. Oh, Neville. First he breaks his wrist and then now he gets locked out of the Gryffindor common room and has to sleep on the floor. I just
00:16:49
Speaker
We're inevitable. Rotten luck. Why didn't nobody walk him back from the ah like, from the nurse's office and be like, I'm going to make sure you get back to your common room because they should have been making sure anyways, because it would have been after bedtime. I don't know. Where's your chaperone? It was probably Professor Curl.
00:17:05
Speaker
and he said I've got bigger things to do. They do get a little bit sidetracked as they um realize Filch is on the prowl looking for students out of bed um and we do get a run-in with Peeves in the process where Peeves is yelling students out of bed, students out of bed down the Charms corridor.

Peeves Encounter & 'Deathly Hallows' Memory

00:17:29
Speaker
And this is where I had the question, was Filch is yelling that in Deathly Hallows a reference to Peeps? I might have been because Peeps isn't. He's not in the movies. um And Filch yells that in Deathly Hallows. And I don't recall that actually happening in the book. I could be wrong, but I don't think it does. And it just made me wonder if it was a reference to Peeps.

Three-headed Dog - Why in School?

00:17:52
Speaker
I don't know I thought that was interesting um to do to do after they get loose of peeves they head down a hallway they know they're not supposed to be in by the way what else is new and they get behind a they get to a door it's locked Hermione says oh move over I love that line in the movie there's certain lines in the movie that I just like can hear um uses Alohomora and unlocks the door. All four of them shuffle in only to find a three-headed dog waiting for them inside.
00:18:28
Speaker
They quickly get away from the dog and run back outside into the hallway saying they'd rather choose the dog or they'd rather choose Filch than the dog. um So they run back out. they Filch is gone. um So they run all the way back to the common room. And once they're inside, they begin to discuss and Ron says what we're all thinking.
00:18:50
Speaker
when he says, what do they think they're doing keeping a thing like that locked up in a school, said Ron finally. If any dog needs exercise, that one does. Thank you, Ron. I asked that question several times a day. Why are they keeping that in the school?
00:19:06
Speaker
and this is supposed to be a school for children bro um before they shuffle off to bed uh hermione does give the killer line of we could all have been killed or worse expelled her priorities they're sorting themselves out um they do kind of come to the conclusion that the guard is guarding the dog is guarding something hermione knows that his foot was on a large trap door And that's how they go to bed is trying to figure out what the heck is the dog guarding. We then move on to chapter 10, Halloween, which is a fantastic chapter and a very key chapter in the turning of this story and this golden trio friendship.

Halloween Troll & New Friendship

00:19:54
Speaker
Harry tells Ron all about vault number 713 and how, um what happened with Hagrid and Hagrid getting the stone from the vault.
00:20:04
Speaker
um while he's telling him about it they get some mail and Harry gets a Nimbus 2000 from Professor McGonagall. Again preferential treatment not only as a freshman they're not called freshmen not only as a first year not allowed to play on a house quidditch team but they're also in not allowed a lot of broom of their own and Harry has achieved both. I'm telling you we preferential treatment, especially if it's a Gryffindor. And he didn't have to pay for it. Homeboy's got a vault full of coinage and didn't even have to pay for his own Nimbus 2000. And got a bougie broom for free. From McGonagall. What? And she's showing some really preferential treatment like she's boosting up the Gryffindors big time. Although Lucius does do it in the next book with the Nimbus 2000 and one for the Slytherin team. I mean, if it's to beat Snape. Yeah.
00:20:57
Speaker
i live a little um They do realize that Draco tried to set them up last night for the midnight duel by telling Filch that they would be out. um He tries to get Harry in trouble again when they go out until the when Harry and Ron go out into the hallway with the new Nimbus 2000 and Draco tries to get him in trouble while saying he's got a broom. And Professor Flitwick is who he tries to get him in trouble with and Professor Flitwick says, I news. I hope you'll be happy as a Quidditch player or whatever.
00:21:29
Speaker
basically congratulate terry right in front of drako and it's kind of hilarious okay drako we need to realize that snitches end up in ditches boy bless his heart um we then meet Harry on the Quidditch pitch where he is meeting Oliver Wood for his Quidditch lessons um and Wood begins to tell him the rules. And here we have another reference of seven as there are seven players on each team on the pitch at a time.
00:22:02
Speaker
<unk> up So we have another seven reference. Some of the rules include um hearing noticing. At either end of the field there were three golden poles with hoops on the end. What goes on to tell them there are seven players on each side. Three of them are called chasers. The chasers throw the quaffle to each other and try and get it through one of the hoops to score a goal. 10 points every time the quaffle goes through one of the hoops.

Quidditch Rules Explained

00:22:29
Speaker
So there's 10 points per score yes um he then goes on to explain there's another player on each side who calls the who calls i'm sorry who's called the keeper i'm keeper her Gryffindor what says i have to fly around our hoops and stop the other team from scoring then there are two bludgers
00:22:54
Speaker
The bludgers are like crazy hyperactive balls. One of them gets set loose by Oliver and when it comes back down in a raging manner at Harry, he swings at it with a bat to stop it from breaking his nose and sends it zigzagging away into the air. These things are like maniacs.
00:23:14
Speaker
the bludgers rocket around trying to knock players off their brims. That's why you have two beaters on each team. The Weasley twins are ours. It's their job to protect their side from the bludgers and try and knock them up toward the other team. So of course he picks the two like most chaotic, most the chaotic duo handles the chaotic goals and Quidditch makes sense.
00:23:40
Speaker
um Harry asks if the bludgers have ever killed anyone and Wood tells him never at Hogwarts. So they have killed somebody. That's not very comforting Oliver. Thank you. Never Hogwarts he says. It would be fun they said. um When Oliver goes into telling about why the Weasleys are the beaters he says they're like a pair of human bludgers themselves. That's about accurate. Makes sense.
00:24:06
Speaker
um And then he pulls out the Golden Snitch, saying this, said Wood, is the Golden Snitch, and it's the most important ball of the lot. It's very hard to catch because it's so fast and difficult to see. It's the seeker's job to catch it. You've got to weave in and out of the chasers, beaters, bludgers, and quaffle to get it before the other team's seeker, because whichever seeker catches the snitch wins his team an extra 150 points, so they nearly always win.
00:24:32
Speaker
That's why seekers get fouled so much. A game of Quidditch only ends when the snitch is caught, so it can go on for ages. I think the record is three months. They had to keep bringing on substitutes so the players could get some sleep.
00:24:45
Speaker
RIP to that team. Who are those? Um, so after explaining those rules, basically the gist is a quaffle point is worth 10 points, the snitch is worth 150. When the snitch is caught, the game is over. So you don't want to be down by 160 points and catch the snitch because then you're gonna be down by 10 points when the game's over and you still lose. Yeah.
00:25:11
Speaker
So there's that. Wood tells him the rules of the game um and we get a sneak into the fact that Harry has been at Hogwarts for two months now.

Quidditch Match Chaos - Snape's Suspected Sabotage

00:25:22
Speaker
um It's now Halloween and they've had Char- they're in Charms class where we learn the legendary Wingardium Leviosa. It's not Leviosa, it's Leviosa.
00:25:35
Speaker
We love it. Hermione corrects Ron of this matter telling him that he's been saying the spell wrong this whole time um and on the way out of the classroom Ron is telling Harry and Seamus about how Hermione is a nightmare and he no wonder she doesn't have any friends. She bursts past them crying in a fit of tears and Harry says I think she heard you.
00:26:03
Speaker
would no um We get into the great hall they've all been feasting on the halloween feast and provided Patel tells Ron and Harry Hermione's been crying in the bathroom all evening.
00:26:17
Speaker
guilt trip him. Soon, Professor Kroll comes bursting into the Great Hall and announces, a troll in the dungeon. Thought you want to know. And collapses onto the stage. um The houses must return to their dormitories and so Dumbledore announces that the prefix should take their houses back. And we do have the quote, prefix, he rumbled, lead your houses back to the dormitories immediately. Percy was in his element.
00:26:47
Speaker
Of course he was. Oh, Percy. um ah Harry and Ron kind of hang back to go look for Hermione. They realize that she's still in the bathroom. She won't know about the troll. Boy, oh boy.
00:27:01
Speaker
um So they go looking for her and catch Snape heading for the third floor. um While they're rounding a corner they notice the troll and they see it going towards a room. When it goes inside they lock it thinking, job well done. Then realize it's the girl's laboratory and that is where Hermione's at.
00:27:23
Speaker
Way to go boys. They burst into the bathroom to help Hermione out and see that the troll is about to attack her. Ron tries to distract it while Harry attacks it. And we get the quote that might as well be the theme for the rest of the series. And that is, Harry then did something that was both very brave and very stupid.
00:27:45
Speaker
every book that quite literally is the theme of the whole series. um Harry climbs onto the troll's back, gets it distracted, his wand ends up up the troll's nose, and just when it's about to use its club to clobber Harry, her Ron uses the Wingardium Leviosa spell and lifts the club up. It drops, hits the troll in the head, and knocks it out cold. um Some teachers rush in, including Severus Snape, Minerva McGonagall, and Professor Quirrell. They burst into the bathroom, find the troll on the ground, and find three first year students standing there looking bamboozled.
00:28:21
Speaker
Um, Minerva begins to yell at them thinking that they went after the troll on their own. Hermione takes the fall saying that she went after the troll because she thought she could handle it. Harry and Ron came to save her and stop her, lol. That's what she's been trying to do the whole book and they just keep quaffling with her. Um, five points get taken from Gryffindor for Hermione but five points give give they get given. I'm having a small stroke. Get given to Ron and Harry for their bravery giving Gryffindor a total of five extra points We love it um from that point on Hermione becomes their friend Which I thought was sweet. I love that the last line of that is From that moment on Hermione Granger became their friend
00:29:12
Speaker
love There are some things you can't share without ending up liking each other and knocking out a 12-foot mountain troll is one of them facts So that is how we leave chapter 10 we go into chapter 11 called Quidditch it is now November they headed back to they headed to Hogwarts in September so I Still the two months, but we know that it's in November. Snow is starting to stick. We've got some frost on the ground and I just imagine Hogwarts in the snow. What a beautiful place to be. What a beautiful place to be with friends. RIP. That one's coming later in the series.
00:29:57
Speaker
Oh, if you know, I know. We see that the Quidditch season has begun and the first match that Harry is going to play in is Gryffindor versus Slytherin, of course it is. um Then we have our show another line that should also be the theme of the series. It was really lucky that Harry now had Hermione as a friend. Amen. um She begins to help him with his homework since he's got Quidditch practice three days a week.
00:30:26
Speaker
and she's also lending him her copy of Quidditch to the Ages where Harry is learning all about Quidditch history. Wood, Oliver Wood has been keeping Harry a secret. Nobody's been able to see him fly. He's kind of keeping him under wraps like his own little secret weapon. Makes sense, it's Oliver Wood. We are in the great, or no,
00:30:49
Speaker
ah Her mind being around Harry and Ron so much has left a bit of a bad influence on her. As they're standing outside, she lights her own little blue flame for them to crowd around in the winter frost, and just at that moment, Snape walks up, noting them looking suspicious trying to hide the flame from him, and he is limping.
00:31:11

Uh-oh. They do in fact hide the flame from him but when he asks what Harry's got, Harry shows him quidditch to the ages. Snape tells him that he's not allowed to have school books outside the school and so he's taking five points from Gryffindor. that rule makes no sense it does not um and i think there's a point where he says like i think he made that rule up yeah we do have another seven reference as when harry is learning more about quidditch history he learns there are over 700 ways of fouling in quidditch at that point i wouldn't even attempt to play so many sevens at one point harry gets brave enough to go
00:31:54
Speaker
Searching for Snape to get his book back, he wants his book um he wanders down to the staff break room,
00:32:02
Speaker
dormitory um and he finds Filch bandaging up Snape's leg that looks tattered. whatever could have done it. When he gets in there, Snape discovers his presence, yells at him to get out, and Harry takes off back towards the common room. um Ron asks if he got it, and he tells him about Snape's legs being bandaged up, and Hermione mentions that I bet the dog did it. The three-headed dog.
00:32:34
Speaker
bless it. So then they run with the theory that they believe Snape is the one that led the troll in. Of course he is. They just immediately like, we've just solved it. It's Snape. It's been Snape all along. Yes. um We then get to the day of the match. And we are on the Quidditch pitch. Oliver Wood is giving his welcome speech. um There are signs hanging up outside saying Potter for president.
00:33:04
Speaker
I would also take Harry Potter for president as of right now please and thank you. um We then have Oliver's speech that he gives apparently every year. Fred and George are quoting it to Harry as Oliver says it. um They say we know Oliver's speech by heart. We were on the team last year. He just gives the same speech every time. Bless him.
00:33:25
Speaker
He's committed. The game begins with ah Gryffindor and Slytherin in the air um and we get our first look at Lee Jordan who does lee he does the announcing for the games and he is clearly very biased to his Gryffindor house um and continues to give boasts about Gryffindor house and bad negative things to say about Slytherin. It's beautiful.
00:33:50
Speaker
um Gryffindor scores the first goal um and Hagra joins Harry, sorry, Hagra joins Ron, Hermione and Neville and Seamus and Dean on the in the stands to watch Harry play.
00:34:04
Speaker
He says that he could see it from his house but he likes coming in person. Harry dodges a rogue bludger um and nearly falls off his broom in the process. He then notices the golden snitch and goes battling after it until Marcus Flint from the Slytherin team knocks in into Harry. Harry's broom then goes on the fritz and Slytherin scores.
00:34:26
Speaker
Hermione and Ron believe that the um problem with Harry's broom is Snape as they see him not breaking eye contact and muttering some words. So Hermione sneaks over and lights him on fire. She also woke up and chose violence. Yes. Um, she runs over and lights his cape on fire just when he notices it. How did that happen? I don't know.
00:34:52
Speaker
Just when he notices it, um she scoops the flame back into the jar that she had and his contact is broken with the spell they believe he's performing and Harry's able to get back on his broom.

Post-Match Suspicions & Hagrid's Secrets

00:35:04
Speaker
He races down to the ground and he regains control of his broom and speeds towards the ground. He lands on the field and looks like he's going to be sick. Everyone's trying to figure out what the heck is going on. um And then something gold falls out of his mouth and into his hand. Harry yells out that he's got the sn snitch. Marcus Flint then tries to protest saying he didn't catch it. He nearly swallowed it, but that's not breaking any rules.
00:35:32
Speaker
So Gryffindor wins the match. and dead it Gryffindor wins 170 to 60 and I think it should be noted. I think I'm pressing something. It should be noted how Harry caught his very first golden snitch that will come back to reference in Deathly Hallows. Keep that in mind ladies and gentlemen.
00:35:57
Speaker
um They tell Hagrid about Snape when they go back to his hut after the game, and he's giving them tea and cookies for winning the game. um They tell Hagrid their theories about Snape. Hagrid then divulges that the dog's name is Fluffy and that he belongs to Hagrid and he bought him off of a Greek chappy he met in the pub last year. Keep that in mind as well. um And then we have them trying to convince Hagrid that it is Snape and how the heck did he get a dog like that um and Hagrid protests saying I'm telling you you're wrong. I don't know why Harry's broom acted like that but Snape wouldn't try and kill a student. Now listen to me all three of you. You're meddling in things that don't concern you. It's dangerous. You forget that dog and you forget what it's guarding. That's between Professor Dumbledore and Nicholas Flamel.
00:36:56
Speaker
Aha, said Harry. So there's someone called Nicholas Flamel involved, is there? Hagrid looked furious with himself. Blabbermouth? He's constantly divulging way too much information. Um, one thing I do want to point out is when Harry's broom is on the fritz, um, Hagrid mentions that only dark magic can interfere with a broomstick. Which is interesting lore. Didn't I never do that.
00:37:23
Speaker
yeah So no other spell can interfere with a broomstick. Broomstick lore has its own thing, like wand lore. Only dark magic. Well, I mean, I guess if you're trying to knock somebody off their broom, it's a selfish intent. Technically, dark magic is used for selfish intentions. Yeah.
00:37:41
Speaker
well It's just interesting. But why? I don't know. I guess I think about, is that really true? Because then maybe they're just meaning it can only be used against a broomstick because in Goblet of Fire, Harry says Akio broom and his broom comes to him. Oh, yeah. So why does that magic work? Is that different?
00:38:02
Speaker
I don't know. Because it's being summoned. I don't know. Interesting things to think about. um Also, Hagrid should never be told a secret ever again. No. he can't keep Let's just be glad he wasn't the secret keeper for James and Lily. Oh gosh. LOL. All in all, there's not really a ton that happens in these chapters. um The biggest thing is the troll. And they get Hermione as a friend.
00:38:30
Speaker
Um, but you know, we're still building, building on the story. So yeah, we had a couple of seven spottings this time around, which was fun and interesting. Um, now we're going to get into our first impressions. Uh, we only had two characters with first impressions this, this week. Um, we have Oliver Wood. Quidditch obsessed.
00:38:54
Speaker
But he's, Quidditch obsessed. He's very passionate about it. He's so passionate about Quidditch. Nobody is passionate about Quidditch the way Oliver Wood is passionate about Quidditch. I feel like I'd be friends with him. Yeah, I think he'd be an interesting fellow.
00:39:08
Speaker
I feel like he'd be hard to hang out with. I feel like he'd just constantly be like, I got a good good i don't know. I'm studying about Quidditch. Um, Lee Jordan. I love Lee. Fanatic. If I was, was an announcer for Quidditch, I would be like Lee Jordan. Same. Same, same, same, same, same. No, he, um,
00:39:30
Speaker
He's fun and interesting. I love like his his little comments about Gryffindor and how they're amazing and you've got Minerva behind him going, Lee, I'm not going to let you do it anymore if you keep this up. Well, there was also the part where it was like he was talking about, I think it was a girl that was on the Quidditch team. He's like, she's very attractive and I swear, Lee. Is that Angela? Yeah, I think so. awesome It's cute. um But that's the only two characters we got introduced to in these chapters that I remembered.

Oliver Wood & Lee Jordan - First Impressions

00:40:01
Speaker
There wasn't anybody else was there? I don't think so. um So this is kind of a shorter episode today folks but I mean there's some big chapters coming up and three at a time was honestly like a very smart decision for us because there's a lot to discuss um as we get further down the road. um They did also mention that Charlie
00:40:20
Speaker
Weasley was really good at Quidditch. Which is some interesting backstory on Charlie. And I guess he could have went pro in Quidditch if he hadn't decided to go chase after dragons. That's what he says. So I think that's interesting. okay um We have chapter themes. My theme for these chapters was the quote that I said earlier. Harry then did something that was both very brave and very stupid. That was also my theme because my lord. Bless him.
00:40:48
Speaker
he's
00:40:54
Speaker
That is the theme of the whole series, I swear. um Okay, that is kind of the end of our discussion. We do have our question of the week in case you guys don't know what that is. um Each week with each week's episode we ask a question to you guys on Instagram where you can comment your answers And last week's question was do you think everyone was sorted into the Hogwarts houses they were best suited for?

Listeners' Theories on House Traits

00:41:25
Speaker
um We did have one comment that I thought was interesting. um I like the idea and a theory once that the houses weren't the personality and that someone could have the personality and traits of many houses but the one they valued above others was the house they ended up in.
00:41:42
Speaker
so a lot of the house designations make more sense. Saying that, Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy don't have a Slytherin bone in them. They're practically many marauders, almost more Gryffindor than Harry himself. They had zero ambition and or want to do anything, but when the opportunity came to be entirely reckless in order to save someone they didn't even know,
00:42:07
Speaker
That's a different story. And that was by Phoenix dot 5680. So thank you for your comment. Um, which I think is a very interesting point. Like she said, I think everyone has the ability of all four houses, but it's the quality they, um, they, they value about the value above others. Yeah. So that was interesting. So that was last week's question.
00:42:31
Speaker
Hallie, why don't you read us this

Harry's Flying Breach - Expulsion Debate

00:42:33
Speaker
week's question? Okay, so this week's question is, do you think they should have expelled Harry after he flew on the broom? honest Honestly, I think it would have been hilarious. Roll credits, like... I think it would have been funny. He does, and not even just the broom, like he does so many things to risk getting expelled like Harry. Why are you risking it for the biscuit, my friend?
00:42:54
Speaker
Heck far, I think, in Chamber of Secrets when they fly the car. That's number one. They should have been expelled then. There's so many ways he should have been expelled. And crashed into the Whomping Willow. So do you think he should have been expelled after he flew in the brown?
00:43:08
Speaker
I think it's a little harsh. they're I mean, it's literally- You're literally flying on a broom. Well, no, it's the first flying lessons they've had. It's like the first week. I think it's a little harsh to expel him. I think I would have given him a punishment. A punishment or like a warning. like Not immediately put him on the Quidditch team. Oh, Dumbledore's rubbing off on you, McGonagall.
00:43:31
Speaker
Like maybe put him on the Quidditch team, but he has to sit out a game. A game or two? Yeah. Who knows? I don't know. I would have done, I would have handled a punishment of some sort. Okay. Cause that's kind of crazy. Um, we are also on our Instagram, keeping up with a Hogwarts house poll. Um, the post is pinned to our Instagram.
00:43:52
Speaker
um So if you go on Family Fiction Pod Instagram, you'll see a post. um We want to know your Hogwarts house. um and We've got a poll going in the caption of that post, or you can comment. Suck it, Hallie. Shut up. Hufflepuff is winning by a lot.
00:44:22
