Snape vs. Remus: Dark Paths and Innocence
00:00:00
Speaker
Again, i think both sides are at fault. Snape wasn't the best guy. he was going down a very dark path. um Some of the stuff that James did was to show out in front of Sirius. Some of it was to show in front of Lily.
00:00:13
Speaker
oh yeah. one hundred percent 100%. So, there's just a lot of layers there. Yeah. But... It'd be interesting to explore. It's hard see it all put on Remus. Because I don't think Remus was at fault at all.
00:00:24
Speaker
I think Remus was just there. No.
00:00:32
Speaker
What we've got to find is our perfect melody So we'll open up a book to a story memory A fantasy to hold on an expedition Won't you step into our world, this is family fiction Hello everyone and welcome back to Family Fiction with Halle and Carmen.
Welcome to Family Fiction: Podcast Overview
00:00:58
Speaker
um The plan for today is chapters 7 through 9 of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling.
00:01:07
Speaker
We do want to give a slight spoiler alert for this book as well as other books in the series. We'll be discussing foreshadowing and just basic outcomes of events for this book as well as the rest the series.
Current Reads: Quicksilver & The Heart of Betrayal
00:01:21
Speaker
So if you haven't read the series and you don't want to be spoiled, then go read it and then come back to us. But before we do that, before we get into today's discussion, we will do our currently reading.
00:01:33
Speaker
So mine still has not changed. um It is still Quicksilver. I've kind of sort of hit a reading slump and just not really been in the mood to read.
Harry Potter Chapters 7-9: Boggart Lesson & Snape
00:01:45
Speaker
so But it does not mean the book is bad. It's pretty interesting so far. Stuff is happening. I am currently reading The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson. i haven't started it yet.
00:01:58
Speaker
I just finished the first book, which is The Kiss of Deception. And then I listened to To Complay by Allie Hazelwood. So I haven't started The Heart of Betrayal yet, but that is my next up.
00:02:12
Speaker
So there we are. um All right, we will get in today's discussion. We started off with chapter seven, the bogger in the wardrobe.
00:02:24
Speaker
um We learned that Draco has been out of classes for a week. um When he does show up to potions, his arm is covered in bandages, and he is very much playing the martyr with Pansy Parkinson, um letting on that his arm is in so much pain.
00:02:40
Speaker
um He comes in late to class and Snape lets it slide and Harry remarks that if that was them, he would not be letting it slide. Nope. um They are making a shrinking solution in class and Ron and Harry are forced to help Draco make his ingredients.
00:02:57
Speaker
Since he quote unquote can't use his arm. So there's that. um Draco complains about the way that Ron has sliced up his ingredients. Because Ron does it very haphazardly.
00:03:09
Speaker
Snape comes over and makes Ron trade his ingredients for Draco's. um And then Draco threatens Hagrid's job. Saying that Lucius is making complaints to the board.
00:03:20
Speaker
And he would expect him to be fired any day now. Um, Neville is struggling with his potion as per usual. Um, and Snape yells at him as the potion is supposed to be green and Neville's is orange.
00:03:36
Speaker
And Snape tells him that at the end of the lesson, if he has not fixed his potion, he will feed his potion to his toad after lessons. Seamus comes over and tells Harry that Sirius Black has been sighted not far from Hogwarts.
00:03:49
Speaker
And Draco makes some sly remarks about how if it was him, ah he wouldn't be staying at Hogwarts. He'd be looking for him. um And Harry should be, you know, angrier than it is.
00:04:02
Speaker
Kind of letting on that Draco knows more than Harry about Sirius, ah but without actually telling him. And we know that he is referencing what everyone believes that Sirius betrayed James and Lily.
00:04:17
Speaker
So he is referencing that, but Harry doesn't know that. But that is also not the case. Yes. Um, Hermione helps Neville secretly without Snape's knowledge because Snape told her not to.
00:04:30
Speaker
um and Harry asks Ron what he thinks Draco means about warning Harry. Um, and Ron's not sure what's going on either. He thinks that Draco's just messing with him.
00:04:43
Speaker
um neville feeds his toad at the end of the lesson and his toad trevor does shrink correctly to a tadpole snape fix him back fixes him back to a toad and takes five points for hermione helping rude they leave class and they're all walking down the hall and suddenly ron notices that hermione is no longer walking with them um suddenly she reappears and she's got a ton of books in her hand and she is tucking something down the front of her robes.
00:05:15
Speaker
Which we'll find out later what exactly that is. Yes. She's carrying tons of books and she hands them off to Ron and Ron questions how the heck she has all of those subjects.
00:05:28
Speaker
um And then when she shuffles off, Ron says to Harry that he thinks that she's not telling them something. LOL. LOL. She's got plenty of time
Plot Deep Dive: Gryffindor Incident & Character Dynamics
00:05:38
Speaker
to do those classes. Wink, wink.
00:05:40
Speaker
um We shift over to Defense Against the Dark Arts with Remus Lupin. um And it's their first lesson with him. And he tells him it's going to be a practical lesson. Put away their books. Take out their wands.
00:05:53
Speaker
And Harry remarks that the last time they had a practical lesson was with Lockhart with the Cornish Pixies. Um, Remus leads them out of the class and around the corridor. They see they run into Peeves, who is stuffing gum in a locked door.
00:06:09
Speaker
and um, he is taunting Remus, calling him Loopy Lupin. Um, or Loony Lupin, sorry. And, you know, like, there's a whole thing behind that, too. But, you know, we don't obviously know what's going on there yet.
00:06:25
Speaker
Um, Remus uses a spell on Peeves and it ejects the gum from the lock and down Peeves throat and Peeves sails away. Um, he leads the class around the corner to the staff room.
00:06:40
Speaker
When they step inside, Snape is inside. Um, they say something to him about staying and he, like, sasses Remus and leaves. Um, you know, Snape fashion.
00:06:53
Speaker
um yeah On his way out, he makes a remark about warning ah Professor Lupin, you do have Neville Longbottom in your class, and that could be um devastating to your class results.
00:07:08
Speaker
And Remus defends Neville and tells him that he's going to use Neville to do his first demonstration demonstration of the day. And this upsets Snape and he leaves.
00:07:20
Speaker
Um, the class faces a wardrobe in the room that begins to shake and all the students look very nervous. Um, Remus reveals that there is a boggart inside and we learn that a boggart takes the shape of whatever frightens us most.
00:07:37
Speaker
Remus reveals that they will be learning to go up against a bogger in today's lesson, and the best way to face one is with multiple people. He asks why they might think that is, and Harry says because if it takes the shape of what frightens us most, if there's multiple people, it won't know what shape to take.
00:07:56
Speaker
um And he also reveals that laughter defeats a Boggart, so he tells them that they're going to be using the spell Ridiculous, um which will basically shapeshift the Boggart into something funny, and then you laugh at it, and that will defeat it.
00:08:12
Speaker
um Rumus asks Neville what his biggest fear is, and he tells him that it's Severus Snape. Remus asks what Neville's grandmother wears and tells him to picture Snape in his grandmother's clothes.
00:08:28
Speaker
Harry thinks he might picture Voldemort, but then remembers Dementors. remember how scary they were. Neville steps up, and Remus opens the wardrobe. Snape walks out, and Neville uses the spell, ridiculous, um and Snape stands in Neville's grandmother's clothes.
00:08:46
Speaker
Handbag, hat, and all. Pervardi Patel sees a mummy. And then the bandages begin to unravel. Seamus sees a banshee. And then she loses her voice.
00:08:58
Speaker
And then it begins to change into multiple things. And it seems very confused. And right Remus mentions we've got it on the confusion. Quickly, Ron, step up.
00:09:09
Speaker
Ron steps up. He sees a giant spider um that suddenly loses all of its legs. Fantastic. Thank you, Ron. um Harry moves forward, but just as he steps up, Remus steps in front of him, and a glowing orb hangs in the air, and then it kind of deflates to the ground, and he calls for Neville to finish it off.
00:09:30
Speaker
Neville steps in, Snape turns into his grandmother's clothes once more, he huffs a loud ha at it, and it kind of, you know, backs away into the wardrobe. um Remus gives five points to everyone who faced the Boggart, ten to Neville for doing it twice, and five to the trio for answering questions earlier.
00:09:52
Speaker
Harry wonders why Remus stepped in, um but as they're shuffling out of the classroom, everyone is talking about the things that they defeated and how cool they think Remus Lampin is.
00:10:04
Speaker
Which he is. i love Remus. Yes. And this is what the Defense Against the dark cross Dark Arts class is supposed to be like. I just keep thinking back to the scene in Prisoner of Aspen where they have the record player playing. I'm like, see, that'd be the kind of class I'd want to be in.
00:10:17
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Remus seems like a teacher that would be such a vibe. Yes. Well, and he's very, like, they describe him as looking very homely. And so I feel like he's just, like, chill.
00:10:30
Speaker
And, I don't know. Something about him. He's he's not uptight. He's not... um try i could I could believe that their exams would be like chill exams. Like if you know what you're doing, we're good.
00:10:46
Speaker
He's like, I've been here, guys. Trust me. Yeah. um And that is how we close out chapter seven. Chapter eight, we have Flight of the Fat Lady.
00:10:58
Speaker
Everyone loves Remus, except for Slytherin House. Go figure. your eyes um they We kind of shuffle through some different lessons that are taking place.
00:11:09
Speaker
um They are learning about... other magical creatures um and, you know, getting to learn about, like, Grindelos and Kappas and all kinds of other stuff in Defense Against the Dark Arts.
00:11:26
Speaker
Snape had learned about the Boggart and begins to take it out on Neville, very much bullying him a little extra in class. um you're a grown adult snape and you're bullying a child multiple children actually but here we are um he kind of see a glimpse into what transfiguration or not transfiguration divination has been like with trelawny um apparently she gets tears in her eyes and cries every time she sees her in class Um, and people are making remarks about him outside of class, noting that he's like marked for death and a whole thing for that.
00:12:05
Speaker
Um, people are very much treating Harry like he's on his death bed. Um, we know that in Care of Magical Creatures with Hagrid, he is now showing them flobber worms, which they've been doing for several weeks because he's had to take a safer route with his course load.
00:12:21
Speaker
um We know that Oliver Wood has been giving them extra Quidditch practice, and he gave them a whole pep talk about how this is his last chance to win the House Cup, and they've got to step it up, and that they have the best team, and if not for the events of the last two years, they would have had the House Cup, and it's a whole you know Oliver Wood-style speech. um He does up their training to three days a week.
00:12:48
Speaker
um harry comes back from one of the training sessions to the common room after practice and notices everyone is very excited and when he asks ron and hermione what it's about they reveal that it's about the first trip to hogsmeade which will take place on halloween day um ron coaxes harry to ask mcgonagall hermione very much disagrees but ron or harry decides he's going to do it um just then crookshanks jumps into hermione's lap and is chewing on a dead spider um and before going up to bed they all work on their star chart homework
00:13:28
Speaker
Um, Crookshanks begins tearing at Ron's bag with Scabbers, um, and when Scabbers runs out of the bag, Crookshanks chases him around the common room.
00:13:41
Speaker
Hermione grabs Crookshanks and Ron grabs Scabbers and they argue, ron stating that something's wrong with her cat that he must have heard, him say that scabbard was in his bag.
00:13:54
Speaker
Hermione's very advocate about Crookshanks being able to smell the rat and it's not his fault. It's a whole thing. Ron storms off very angry um and he stays and mad at Hermione into the next day.
00:14:09
Speaker
They go to Transfiguration where Lavender Brown is crying on the floor and she reveals that her rabbit has been killed by a fox. um And she tells everyone that Trelawney was right about the date that she had told her that first day in Divination.
00:14:28
Speaker
And that something bad would happen that she was dreading. um Hermione seems very, this is like peak Hermione not liking Trelawney and like that whole thing.
00:14:39
Speaker
theory behind divination she's like I mean did you dread that this was gonna happen and she's like well not this specifically but of course I didn't want anything bad to happen to my rabbit and Hermione's like but it didn't happen today it happened a couple days ago you're just now getting the letter about it and like everyone kind of gets mad at Hermione for this but Hermione thanks herman is actually correct thank you um harry decides that he's going to ask mcgonagall after transfiguration about going to hogsmeade um when everyone's turning in their permission slips he goes up at the end of the line and asks her tells her that his um aunt and uncle forgot to sign the paper and she tells him that he will not be able to go
00:15:28
Speaker
He asks if she could sign it since his aunt and uncle are muggles and they don't fully understand. She tells him no. um If he's not got a signature from his parent or guardian, he cannot go.
00:15:40
Speaker
Harry leaves and Ron tries to cheer him up. Hermione thinks it's for the best. um And Dean has offered to forge the signature and Ron suggests possibly the invisibility cloak.
00:15:53
Speaker
Hermione gets mad at Ron for suggesting Harry sneak out when it's so dangerous and they get mad at each other once more. um It's Halloween morning and Harry is very depressed about not getting go to Hogsmeade.
00:16:06
Speaker
Hermione and Ron join the others um and Harry returns to the common room. Colin Creevey is waiting inside and he invites Harry to join him and his friends and Harry makes an excuse about needing to go to the library and leaves the common room once more.
00:16:25
Speaker
He wanders the castle and runs into Filch, who complains about him walking the halls and says, why aren't you at Hogsmeade to buy all the other things that I'm going to have to clean up later like the other kids are?
00:16:36
Speaker
um And sends him on his way. Harry is wandering the castle and runs into Remus. He goes into his classroom and office with him, and Remus shows him the Grindelow that is sitting in the corner for their next lesson.
00:16:50
Speaker
um Harry asks why he stepped in front of him for the Boggart, and Remus says he didn't want Lord Voldemort to appear and scare the class. And Harry does take note here that Remus says the word Voldemort, and the only other person he had ever heard say it, besides himself, was Dumbledore.
00:17:08
Speaker
fear Fear of the name increases fear of the thing itself. Yep. Harry tells him that he thought about picturing Voldemort, but instead was going to picture Dementors.
00:17:20
Speaker
And Remus notes that what Harry fears most of all is fear itself, which makes sense with the Lord Voldemort, like him saying Lord Voldemort instead of he must not be named.
00:17:33
Speaker
um snape comes in then and brings remus a potion in a cauldron um and snape tells him that he's got more of it and he made a big batch so whenever he's ready for his next dose to come see him when he leaves harry asks why the heck do you have snape making you a potion and remus says he's been feeling off lately and the potion helps Hmm.
00:17:58
Speaker
Wonder why. yes Harry is very concerned that Snape might be poisoning him. Um. Eh, don't think so. Yes. But Remus sends Harry on his way and Harry leaves.
00:18:10
Speaker
Ron and Hermione return sometime later with the other students and Ron has brought him back a ton of candy. Um. Harry tells them about the potion Snape brought Lupin and they head off to the Halloween the feast.
00:18:27
Speaker
They wonder if Snape was poisoning Remus, but Hermione doesn't think so. They eat until they're fuller than full, and then the ghosts perform for the students, showing different acts, and, like, like some of them are, like, performing the way they yeah that they died, which is interesting.
00:18:44
Speaker
um They all return to the common room later, but when the Gryffindors arrive to their common room, the entrance is clogged. Everyone is standing outside. Percy pushes through, and then everyone falls silent.
00:18:57
Speaker
Percy yells for someone to get Dumbledore quickly. um When Dumbledore shows up, he notes that the fat lady has vanished from her painting, and there are large slice marks in the painting, parts of it laying on the ground.
00:19:12
Speaker
McGonagall and Snape appear then and Dumbledore gives them orders to find the fat lady. Peeves shows up and tells them where the fat lady is hiding and reveals that he was trying to get in. She wouldn't let him in and he got angry.
Character Motivations: Sirius, James, and Snape
00:19:30
Speaker
that Sirius Black is to blame for what happened at the entrance to the Gryffindor common room. Dun, dun, dun. Chapter 9, Grim Defeat.
00:19:43
Speaker
Dumbledore sends all the students to the Great Hall, including all of the houses, and tells them they must all stay there. He puts the prefects on watch and head boys and head girls to monitor the area.
00:19:58
Speaker
Dumbledore disappears, the tables, and magic's in some sleeping bags for everyone to sleep. um And as soon as he leaves, everyone begins chittering and chattering about the what happened at the Gryffindor common room.
00:20:11
Speaker
Some people are telling much more dramatic events than what actually happened, which, you know, pure Hogwarts fashion. um Typical children, too. Yes, and everyone is trying to figure out how Sirius could have gotten in and how the Dementors would have missed him.
00:20:27
Speaker
um And we have one of my favorite things about Hermione is where she's like, have you guys not read Hogwarts of History? And Ron's like, no, but I'm sure you have. And she tells him that like he couldn't evaporated in. Nobody can evaporate in or out of Hogwarts.
00:20:45
Speaker
He like couldn't have taken the secret passages because the Dementors would have seen him. It's a whole thing. they're trying to figure out how he got in. Um, the students all fall asleep except for the golden trio.
00:20:58
Speaker
Harry stays awake and sees Dumbledore walk in. Ron and Hermione quickly pretend to be asleep, and so does Harry. um Dumbledore reveals that the fat lady is hiding in another portrait and they've put a new painting on the common room entrance in the meantime until she can kind of de-stress and get her painting fixed up.
00:21:21
Speaker
Snape comes in and says that they found no sign of black and he mentions a conversation that him and Dumbledore had at the beginning of term and how he thinks that someone on the inside must have let black in and that he thinks it was about he told him it was a bad idea to hire dot dot dumbledore cuts him off and harry is trying to figure out what the heck snape is talking about which we all know who he's talking about and we all know how serious has been getting in
00:22:00
Speaker
the school buzzes for the next few days and Sir Cadogan has replaced the portrait hole entrance and this is where my love for this character comes um Harry starts to notice that staff prefects are always around him throughout the day and notices he's being a little bit sheltered McGonagall does call Harry into her office and tells him that it might not be safe to play Quidditch anymore since it is outside the castle grounds he convinces her
00:22:32
Speaker
to let him stay on the team through her love of also wanting Gryffindor to win the House Cup. um And she says that she will have Madame Hooch monitor their practices from now on.
00:22:42
Speaker
um When Harry runs into Oliver Wood during the week, um he reveals that Hufflepuff is playing them now instead of Slytherin, Slytherin claiming that they can't play one man down since he's injured, but Wood knows that this is actually because they...
00:23:01
Speaker
um it's supposed to storm and slytherin doesn't want to play in the rain okay um when he has revealed that huvelpuff is who they'll be playing next all the girls in the gryffindor quidditch team giggle and swoon because huvelpuff has a new seeker his name's cedric diggory and apparently he's very good looking Hmm.
00:23:22
Speaker
um wood comes up to harry between classes to tell him new strategies one day this makes him run late two defense against the dark art he's not too worried because he knows he likes remus but when he gets there snape is teaching instead of remus that day since remus was not feeling well uh snape immediately complains about remus's like class course load and the fact that he's not showing them what he should be showing them so he says we're gonna learn about werewolves today she's so petty
00:23:56
Speaker
um He tells them to turn to page 394 and ninety oh and um asks them to distinguish the difference between werewolves and wolves. um He says he cannot believe that he is seeing third years who can't tell who is a werewolf.
00:24:13
Speaker
Hello, El. Can't, can't. Hermione begins to answer and Snape fusses at her, telling her she's being an insufferable know-it-all and takes five points from Gryffindor. Normally, people would also be ganging up on Hermione, but Harry notes that since it's Snape, they come to her rescue because only they're allowed to call her a know-it-all.
00:24:34
Speaker
um Snape takes five points from Gryffindor and Ron defends her to Snape and Snape tells her to tells him to not um critique the way he teaches ever again and gives Ron detention.
00:24:49
Speaker
um Before the class can leave he assigns an essay on the ways to recognize and kill werewolves. Snape! He's not petty. You're not being very subtle. You're not being very subtle.
00:25:00
Speaker
They all leave class and are trying to figure out why the heck he's so mad at Remus. um Ron comes out complaining that his detention is cleaning bedpans in the hospital wing without magic.
00:25:13
Speaker
um It's the next morning. Harry wakes up really early and feels a cold breeze and notes that Peeves has been blowing on his cheeks. It's very early in the morning and Harry can't go back to sleep, so he gets up. It's storming outside.
00:25:30
Speaker
He gets dressed and grabs his broom. He runs into Crookshanks outside of their room and, um, shoos him away, noting that he's trying to get to Scabbers.
00:25:42
Speaker
Um... And he heads down into the common room, like, living room area and sits waiting for the rest of the school to wake up. um While he's sitting there, he's worrying about the match, and he's trying to keep Crookshanks from sneaking up to the boys' corridor.
00:25:59
Speaker
um Eventually, everyone starts to wake up, and he heads down to breakfast. They head to the Quidditch arena quickly after, and Oliver Wood could not even muster a pep talk, which is crazy because he's so nervous for the first Quidditch match of the season.
00:26:18
Speaker
um The match begins in a very wild storm, and Harry's vision is constantly clouded by the rain on his glasses. Eventually, he hears a sharp whistle and comes to the ground, and Wood has called for a timeout and reveals that Gryffindor is up by 50 points.
00:26:37
Speaker
um Harry states that he can't see in these conditions, and Hermione comes through using magic to repel water on Harry's glasses. I wish... Such a thing existed. But also, like, this is peak, like, hairy.
00:26:50
Speaker
Like, you have glasses, you play Quidditch, you know there's gonna be weather situations. Why wouldn't you have researched ways to repel water off your glasses? He's not the brightest bulb in the chandelier. I think we figured that out.
00:27:06
Speaker
Yeah. The match resumes, and as Harry's up in the sky, he sees a shaggy black dog imprinted in the sky of the stands. um When he blinks and looks back, it's gone, but then he sees Cedric chasing the golden snitch.
00:27:22
Speaker
Harry follows closely behind, chasing it with him, and then he notes that it's become deathly silent. on the pitch and he looks down and sees a dozen dementors below him looking straight at him he feels numb and hears the screaming again that he heard on the train he hears a woman pleading for his life and a sharp shrill laughter um and just then harry falls off his broom and everything goes black Um, he begins to hear voices whispering about thinking he's dead. Is he all right?
00:27:58
Speaker
And he feels very sore all over his eyes spring open and he notes that he's in the hospital wing with Hermione, Ron and the rest of the Gryffindor Quidditch team surrounding him. They revealed to him that he fell from his broom and they thought he was going to die. Um, Hufflepuff did win the match when Cedric landed. He wanted to do a rematch and didn't think that it was fair.
00:28:21
Speaker
since Harry fell and was injured um but since he did catch the snitch Hufflepuff did win shout out to Cedric thank you so much for representing the Hufflepuffs good sportsmanship um they all discussed still being able to compete for the cup and that Hufflepuff would have to win 200 points to Ravenclaw or lose 200 points to Ravenclaw So there is still a possibility of winning the cup, but chances are slim.
00:28:49
Speaker
Um, and Harry realizes that he has lost his first ever Quidditch match. Um... You'll recoup those house points, I'm sure. Dumbledore, or Hermione tells him that Dumbledore slowed his fall and stormed out onto the pitch. He was very furious about the Dementors.
00:29:07
Speaker
um Harry begins to remember the screams that he heard when he was falling, and he asks Hermione what happened to his broom. um Ron reveals that it hit the whomping willow on its way down, and he asks to see it. Hermione picks up the broom in several pieces.
00:29:25
Speaker
And it is completely trashed. Sad And that is how we end chapter nine. Beef with the Whomping Willow. Yes. so these chapters, like, obviously not a lot of action points took place, but it's a really good, there's so much foreshadowing in those chapters of, like, how did Sirius get into the castle? Mm-hmm.
00:29:49
Speaker
How it's is he getting past Dementors? Why Snape mad at Remus? Yes. There's just a lot of foreshadowing in those chapters. So that's kind of fun. i It's just really interesting to see like how petty Snape is. Oh, yeah.
00:30:06
Speaker
And how much he wants... like He's begging the kids, figure out he's a werewolf so we can get him fired. Because I think his end goal is like someone like Draco figuring out.
00:30:18
Speaker
And then Draco tells Lucius and Lucius gets Remus fired. Like that's his end goal is like somebody complained to their parents so that Remus can get out of here.
00:30:29
Speaker
And to be on, to play devil's advocate a little bit, they did slightly torture Snape in school. Yeah. However...
00:30:42
Speaker
yeah Snape was also kind of an awful person in school. So, I think it's just... was very bitter. it it was literally, like, there were the Marauder's side, Snape's side, and the truth. Like, both sides were at fault because, yes, James and them were very cocky. They played pranks. They were not...
00:31:05
Speaker
you know, the greatest people. They were the golden boys. Like, they, you know, they did bully Snape. But Snape, like, it's known that Snape, when he was in Hogwarts, that's when he started to become a Death Eater.
00:31:17
Speaker
He did kind of go down the wrong path. He calls Lily a mudblood. Like, he does do some things that are awful. i just, both sides are in the wrong on that.
00:31:29
Speaker
So, it it is kind of sad. and But what's sad with this is that Remus was so sheltered from that because he was dealing with his own crap that, from what I understand, Remus never really took that big of a role in the bullying.
00:31:49
Speaker
No. It was mostly Sirius and sometimes James. I really- serious was a real troublemaker yeah I can, when I really think about it, when I think of the Marauders as a whole, I see mainly James and Sirius being the aggravators.

Speaker
And James just being cocky James. Sirius being a troublemaker because he doesn't really have the best home life. Yes. did not have the greatest home life ser remus i'm trying to think about peter pedigree he may was very sheltered too he just he idolized james yeah i think he may have just played along with it just because of james remus i don't really see just based on his personality i don't see him being a huge ag Yeah.
00:32:39
Speaker
yeah Towards Snape. He's like, listen, I've got my own issues. I've got bigger things to worry about. I think he was just always there and Snape associates him with that group. Wrong place, wrong time. And honestly, James being as cocky as it was, i think some of that was he is trying to show out.
00:32:57
Speaker
He, I think he did a lot of times want impress Sirius, and then sometimes it was James probably having to get Sirius out of trouble a lot, I'd say.
00:33:08
Speaker
So, because, like, it's revealed that, like, they tried to get Snape killed. Because they were gonna they tricked Snape into going to the Shrieking Shack one of the nights that Remus was going to be there shifting. Yeah.
00:33:24
Speaker
And it almost got Snape killed. And it was Sirius who set that up because he hated Snape so much. And James does kind of have to, like...
00:33:36
Speaker
come to Sirius's defense a lot of, like, trying to cover his tracks. So then that's when they have to get Snape out so that Sirius doesn't get in Sirius trouble.
00:33:49
Speaker
LOL. And... Punny. um So is it's just a lot of, like... That's why I want a Marauder's, like, official book, because I think it would be interesting to see the specifics on those dynamics of, like, I don't know if James was really that bad of a guy. i think it was a lot of showing out for Sirius and having to cover Sirius' tracks.
00:34:13
Speaker
Honestly, I think Sirius was the issue. I think Sirius was the issue. he was the drama. He, i think because, I like to think of it as he had such a bad home life.
00:34:23
Speaker
Like, his parents were the worst and, like, he was pretty much disowned from his family. He had such a bad life that he was just taking it out on others. And i that's what I think of it as.
00:34:36
Speaker
But yeah, I would love a Marauders book because when you really think about it, there's so much story there that can be told. And we know bits and pieces, but there's so much more, especially with like dynamics and stuff.
00:34:51
Speaker
Well, and even just just look at and Order at the Phoenix. Sirius is so childish. Oh, yeah. In Order of the Phoenix. He constantly wants out. He puts his life in danger because he wants out of the house.
00:35:04
Speaker
He's constantly, he tries to be a bad influence on Harry a lot. And Molly doesn't really care for it. And it's just like a whole thing. So, I really like, i think all of it.
00:35:17
Speaker
boils down to Snape kind of blaming all of them for the actions of one. Yep. And that's hard to say because Sirius is one of my top three favorite characters. I love Sirius Black, but he is the drama. He is the troublemaker. And I thought, I think a lot of James's issue was just trying to cover for Sirius's actions and cover his tracks.
00:35:43
Speaker
So, Again, i think both sides are at fault. Snape wasn't the best guy. he was going down a very dark path. um Some of the stuff that James did was to show out in front of Sirius. Some of it was to show in front of Lily.
00:35:58
Speaker
Oh, yeah. 100%. So, there's just a lot of layers there. Yeah. But... It'd be interesting it's hard to explore. It's to see all put on Remus. Because I don't think Remus was at fault at all. I think Remus was just there.
00:36:12
Speaker
Remus just didn't have any other friends. And that's the crowd he fell in with. And so, that's who he stayed with. But... Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. I think some of this, too, is not only geared at Remus.
00:36:23
Speaker
I think some of that is geared at the fact that, like, Snape definitely thinks that Remus is helping Sirius. Mm-hmm. maybe there's some layers to it of, like, if I can get rid of Remus, then we get rid of Sirius Black by proxy.
00:36:37
Speaker
Yeah. So, I get it. There's just so much. It's just crazy that like when the rest of the Wizarding World literally turn their back on Sirius Black and they all think he's evil, even the Weasleys think he's evil, like that Remus didn't go with the flow on that.
00:36:57
Speaker
Yeah. Remus was very advocate. He's very, very loyal. Yes. He was very adamant about staying on Sirius's like positive note. Like it's just kind of Crazy to see. Which, obviously, Dumbledore, I think, is very pro-Sirius, too.
00:37:14
Speaker
I don't think he believes that Sirius did it don't think... I'm sure there was some fight for Sirius when it went down. Oh, yeah. Because I think they were probably like, listen... we know Sirius, like, we, he's like, we know how Sirius really is. I don't think he would be the kind of person that would do this, but.
00:37:35
Speaker
And I wonder if there was any advocating from Dumbledore at the time of, like, was Sirius supposed to be executed Dumbledore advocated for him just going to ask them.
00:37:49
Speaker
I don't know. yeah because honestly, going to i think going to Azkaban is worse than death. Well, because, I mean, eventually you do get the kiss of death from Dementor, and that's what they set out to do to Sirius. Oh, yeah. Is they want to, the Dementors are going to kill them kill him if they find him.
00:38:09
Speaker
So I wonder if that was going to be the case at the time, and Dumbledore swung some sort of something to get him just Playing the politician. So
Question of the Week: Personal Boggarts
00:38:17
Speaker
it would be interesting to see what happened during that time.
00:38:22
Speaker
All right. Okay, so no new characters this week. And going on to our question of the week. So last week's question was, is Haggard being a teacher a good idea?
00:38:35
Speaker
And we got some answers back. First from LizanneYoung97. Shout out Liz. um She said... No, but I admire his passion, which, yes, I will agree with.
00:38:49
Speaker
um And then the other answer that we got was from Reveglio podcast, and the response was, uh, definitely not. Yeah.
00:39:01
Speaker
Which, yeah. I kind of, like, I admire the passion that Hagrid has for, like, teaching about yeah the care of magical creatures because that is something that he's so passionate about.
00:39:12
Speaker
but he's not exactly qualified to be a teacher. Right. So I see, i would agree with those answers. I think he has the right motivation, but the wrong follow through. Wrong execution. Yes.
00:39:31
Speaker
The thought is there. The actual actions are not. No.
Hogwarts House Poll & Episode Wrap-up
00:39:37
Speaker
All right. And this week's question of the week, Is going to be, what would your boggart look like?
00:39:44
Speaker
Spiders. Yeah. I honestly don't know. It could be like a blue billion different things for me. um Mine would be spiders. Yeah, spiders. Because I genuinely, like, I can't even...
00:39:58
Speaker
I'll give a little tiny story. There, couple weeks ago, there was a spider on the wall in our dining room at the house.
00:40:09
Speaker
And it was perfectly in the corner where the wall meets the ceiling to the point where, like, I couldn't hit anything. Couldn't hit it with anything because it would either hit the the wall or the ceiling. It wouldn't hit the spider. Like, it was in the corner.
00:40:25
Speaker
So there was nothing I could use. So I'm not even joking when I say I stood there for 30 minutes waiting for that thing to come low enough that I could kill it. I stood there and watched it for 30 minutes because I knew if I left the room I would come back and it would be gone.
00:40:39
Speaker
Yeah, I can understand that. And then when it descended, I killed it. Poor thing. Not really. I sought violence.
00:40:51
Speaker
Yep. All right. So nothing changed on our Hogwarts house poll. We're still with four Hufflepuff in the lead, two Gryffindor, two Ravenclaw, one Slytherin.
