Um, I kind of went for the funnier route with Voldemort. Um, let' hope next, um, I gave him fresh out the slammer.
00:00:10
Speaker
That's so good. It's true though. We know he's been in that forest, but we don't really know what he's, what has he just been in a tree? Like, do we know? Not in a tree. Um, I do.
00:00:27
Speaker
That's so good. I just imagined him coming like, he takes over Kroll's body, fresh out the slammer. I know who my first call will be to you. And you're just like, I'm like, who are you calling? We're on the back of someone else's
00:01:06
Speaker
Hello everyone and welcome back to Family Fiction with Carmen and Liz today because Hallie is not here. i'm I'm the Hallie substitute today. Hallie is gone to Disney World. Boo.
00:01:24
Speaker
And we're here. um So she's gone and we're doing a bookish banter episode. This will be our first bookish banter episode. um But we kept it on theme. And if you haven't read the title, this is going to be Potter is a Swifty episode. And we are giving each of the Harry Potter characters from the first book a Taylor Swift theme song. I'm so excited.
00:01:52
Speaker
Um, but like I said, I have Liz here today. She is Expecto Patronum. I can't speak. I'm sorry. Um, she's a co-host on Expecto Podtronum, a Harry Potter themed podcast all about your Patronuses. Any more you want to add to that? I mean, I think that sums it up. Every episode we talk about a different Patronus. Uh, we probably haven't gotten, uh,
00:02:21
Speaker
to everyone's Patronus yet. I think we're like 11 deep, 10 deep when this episode comes out and there's a lot to cover. So just stick with us and hear our wild antics. Yes. It's very fun to like, I never think that much about a Patronus, but the episodes are really fun to listen to. And especially if you become a Patreon member like I am and you get to see the bloopers, it just makes it even more fun.
00:02:51
Speaker
Oh, the bloopers. Whenever Lucy and I are on an episode, we end up with a lot of bloopers. Well, and I was going to say, if you're on the Patreon too, you also get the little bonus episodes and the bonus episode I watched where y'all literally started out with saying we have to stay on topic. I felt very related to, especially since as we're recording this.
00:03:14
Speaker
This recording's already an hour long because we got on here and didn't start the podcast episode. We just started chatting. and gettingtting yeah yeah um But is also a bookstagrammer and her bookstagram will be linked in our description. If you guys would like to go check her out. I post things sometimes daily. I try my best. ah I was trying to post daily and fell off that train very quickly.
00:03:44
Speaker
That's okay. Sometimes my posts are pretty unhinged because sometimes I'm slow with reading. So like I posted recently my theories for the new Hunger Games book. Let's be real, those theories are pretty unhinged. I love those theories. I thought they were funny. There's some, there's some good ones in there. There's some like kind of messed up ones, but also some like all sentimental ones. So it's a good mix. Like I said, today we are going to be sorting the characters into their Taylor Swift theme song. We felt like it was on brand with staying with the Harry Potter theme, but also sadly the era store has come to an end. had And instead of accepting it and moving on, we're actually just going to hold on as tight as we can and make a themed episode about it. Well, and we're recording this on Taylor's birthday, which I feel like makes it even more on brand, which is why we're
00:04:43
Speaker
giving Harry Potter characters Taylor Swift theme songs. Yes, I was about to further discuss Taylor Swift, but but we should move on.

Spoiler Alert & Current Reads

00:04:50
Speaker
I'm trying. to what on and talk about her all night Before we get started, I do want to go ahead and give our spoiler alert, because as we discuss these characters, there might be spoilers for the book or for the rest of the series. um Because I know like couple of characters. I have a couple different songs picked out because I'm like, well, this kind of fits for now, but then this one fits for later. Before we get into the discussion, Hallie and I always do what we are currently reading. um So my current read is The Deal by L. Kennedy. um I just started it the other day because I wanted a contemporary romance to go between my dark romances. I needed a slight mental health break.
00:05:36
Speaker
That's fair. a that true That is what I'm reading right now. And so far it's really, really good. Like my Kindle tells me I have five hours left in it. So let's be honest. I'm saying up the rest of the night to finish it. right and lay art I have like two and a quarter current reads. Cause I'm currently, I'm trying to finish up my net galley arcs from this year that like I forgot about and or, you know, life.
00:06:05
Speaker
So I'm currently reading, I'm 66% of the way through Dirty Lion Wolves, which is technically the second book of a series that I have not read the first book to, but I didn't need to, it's okay.
00:06:19
Speaker
ah like and and It's working really well as a standalone. like um I think because like the first one is, I think it's fairies and then the second one is, well so it's taking place in different parts of the universe, so like it's working. um I'm really enjoying it. I'm also steadily working my way through Iron Flame. It's like one of those, I'll read 100 pages and then I need to take like three days of a break ah because of how long the book is. It was a very long book. She could have cut that in half and made two books out of it. But yeah. I am really happy though that we're back at school. Spoiler alert.
00:07:04
Speaker
for Iron Flame um because I feel like so many times in like fantasy stuff when they end up at the battle place or wherever, they just stay there. So I'm really glad we we have that like go back. um And then tonight I'm planning to start On a Flight to Sydney by Jay Ford as part of my reading for a ah bookish convention I'm an influencer for that's in January in Arizona called Readers of the Valley.
00:07:30
Speaker
i mean It's a fun little rom-com type thing. I'm using that to break up. I've been reading a lot of kind of heavy fantasy recently, I feel like, so I'm trying to break it up a little with a rom-com in there. The other thing

Book of the Month Discussion

00:07:44
Speaker
that we do once a month is our book of the month from the month previous. Last week we did do our November book of the month, but I didn't know if you wanted to give your November book of the month.
00:07:55
Speaker
Oh yeah, i okay but I do. Let me pull up to make sure I say the title in the right order because I'm really bad about getting titles. OK, so my November favorite was Wolves and Watercolors by Ali Hollis. It's the fourth in like a paranormal ah romance, cozy fantasy type series about shifters on a mountain, and and it was nice because the first three books have been themed around like a really intense political struggle.
00:08:24
Speaker
between several of the packs. And the third one was us just getting everyone finally in like happy times and like having good life movement and no political struggle. And it was, ah it was, it was great. I did get an arc for it. Um, and it's still my favorite because it was wonderful that whole series. It's probably one of my top series that I read this year. Okay. So we will jump on into today's discussion, which is.

Assigning Taylor Swift Songs to Harry Potter Characters

00:08:53
Speaker
giving the characters of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Taylor Swift theme songs. We didn't do, obviously, every character. Seamus is not on here. Lee Jordan is not on here. Mostly just the main characters. Honestly, the only reason I put the Weasley twins on here is because they're such big parts in the series as a whole. Yeah. And even though we don't see them a lot in Sorcerer's Stone, I felt like they- I think that's their- That's really the same throughout the season.
00:09:21
Speaker
I feel like the people you've included on here, we get good like characterization for them as the as it goes along. so Yeah. Well, because obviously we meet Molly too, but briefly. Yeah, super briefly. like I don't really want to give her a theme song based on that interaction. So starting off with Harry Potter himself, um I did give him, I gave him Five songs, but I narrowed it down to like, these are the two that fit this book. That's so many. Okay, you start. smell what I got to hear them in the series. That's fair. that was why They all make sense, Harold. um Let's see. The first like main song I did give him was Clara Bow. Oh, that's a good one. I feel like when he comes into Hogwarts, they're especially like,
00:10:19
Speaker
you know, they knew his father and his mother. So I feel like there's a lot of comparisons going on, especially when he gets on the Quidditch team, they're like, your dad was a seeker, he would be proud of you. da da oh yeah And so just like the general comparison to like, like already comparing him to people of the past. And like, obviously, we know later down the series, but that that exactly what Severus Snape is doing. He's like, yeah no, you're, your father made over. I already hate you. So and just the general, like people have a lot of like preconceived notions about this is the boy who lived. He must be extraordinary. Yeah. Right. He's got to have. an live life Yeah. I feel like a lot of expectations are thrust on him. Like, oh, clearly you have to be really adept at magic. Right. And I feel like we see that in the initial Snape interaction. I mean,
00:11:17
Speaker
That's a combo of things there, but I feel like that's like, well, aren't you? Don't you have the skill? I i feel like it's implied. It's maybe like, well, aren't you as smart and great at this as Lily was? Yes, you know. Yeah, so clair beau felt like the most prevalent for me. I did also pick I hate it here. Really thinking about when he's at the very sleeves blank, please take me away.
00:11:46
Speaker
I forget about that son, Loki. When you think about the theory, remember when people were like the theory that it's all been in his head the whole time? I know and I hate that theory. He ended the books with and then he woke up in his cupboard under the stairs. So then I'm just like, okay, then the I hate it here. Lyrics really start to come into effect of I hate it here so I will go to secret gardens in my mind.
00:12:14
Speaker
oh okay ah god no my The other three side quest songs I gave him were the prophecy. This one I thought was funny because I'm kind of thinking like when he's at Hogwarts thinking of the Dursleys I forgot that you existed. Nice, yes. And then Bejeweled because you know when he shows up he's like big man on campus and he's like yeah best believe I'm still Bejeweled buddy. You went in a very, you went in a very different direction than I did. ah What were yours? Give me yours. I went for a darker mindset. I have two. And they're more like, ironic, I feel like partially. So my first one is Cordelia Street. Because I feel like he's very much like, I don't have to go back to the Dursleys and in summer habits. And he's like, oh, wait,
00:13:10
Speaker
I gotta, I gotta to go back. yeah But then I also like, hard like the other end of it of like, if he didn't get to come back to Hogwarts, he would be, you know, like that kind of sadder note of it. um You know know, the many times he risks expulsion. Yeah. Yeah. part yeah ah And I also picked anti-hero, which feels like a pretty default for him, but I feel like it really resonates even just in the first book.
00:13:36
Speaker
what the stuff he's going through is like all of these people are like shaking his hand and they're like, thank you, Mr. Potter. And he's like, for what? Like, I just existed. nothing Okay. So Hermione Granger, I gave her also the prophecy because the like, um, like I just want someone who wants my company for Hermione. You know, she's just trying to live her life.
00:14:06
Speaker
Um, and then this one might be a little obvious, but I did give her mean. Oh, okay. She's probably, I just imagined in her mind, she's like, man, I'm going to be the greatest switch that ever did exist. They're all going to rue the day. Well, I felt like mean was very appropriate. That's good. So I, I'm doing a ah deep cut throwback. I gave her a place in this world. I.
00:14:35
Speaker
Okay, that one was a a runner up for her for me. Okay, right I just feel like it's it's so reflective of like where she's at in terms of like, she's trying to fit into this place. She's really fitting in. She doesn't really have friends. Like she's, but she's like, look, if I can prove I'm really good that I belong here, then like people will have to like me.
00:14:57
Speaker
I don't know, just the whole vibe of a place in this world of like, I'm just a girl. I'm just here. I'm trying to fit in that it, I feel like it really represents Hermione in this book. Yeah. That one was a runner up for mine. Ronald Weasley. Um, I gave him two. I also gave him clear a bow because I feel like, especially when he comes onto the train.
00:15:21
Speaker
His like main thing that he tells Harry is like, my brothers have done this and they've done this and they've done this. So if I do that, it's not going to be a new thing because they've already done it. So I feel like he gets compared to his siblings a lot because they do really stress the fact too in the first book that Charlie was like a Quidditch prodigy and now he's with dragons and Bill was, you know, working with Gringotts and now the Weasley twins are remembering Percy's a prefect.
00:15:51
Speaker
So I feel like he probably gets a lot of that like comparison. Um, and I also did give him a place in this world. oh yeah re then Um, because I feel like he, I mean, I would think he could still feel a little bit alone. Cause he, I mean, let's be honest, he's riding Harry's coattails a little bit. So I, I gave him another deep cut throwback. Um, I'm only me when I'm with you.
00:16:19
Speaker
because I feel like great Harry's the first person that like doesn't understand anything at all about his family history or his dynamics. And it's like finally someone Ron can have a clean slate with that's not like expecting him to perform academically at a certain level or expecting him to be sorted into a particular house or like anything like that. Like he can actually have like a clean slate with someone who doesn't know anything about his family and actually be himself and the person he wants to be known as? On to the next Weasley. Fred, so Fred and George, I tried to give them two different songs, even though they can kind of go a little bit hand in hand. But for Fred Weasley, I gave him Long Live. Oh, nice. Because of, you know, Long Live, all the magic we made. I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you. Yes. RIP. Well, foreshadowing. Foreshadowing. That's that spoiler warning. Whoops.
00:17:16
Speaker
I struggled really hard with the Weasleys, even like Ron as a whole. and So I ended up for the twins as a whole giving them the same song. And it's one that Taylor's featured on and it's two is better than one. just as a good one I feel like, yeah, ultimately it's like about romantic relationships, but I feel like it also discusses like why they're better together and like how they play off of each other and how that really works well for them. And just thinking ahead to like their business and things like that. I don't know. It just, it really worked for me. Yeah. For them, I kinda had to take into perspective like the series as a whole. Cause like I said, like they're not really super prevalent in the first book. Um, so I gave Fred Long Live and then I gave George 22. Nice. Cause I started to just give them the party songs cause let's be honest.
00:18:14
Speaker
That's fair. Neville Longbottom. I gave him this is me trying. Oh, that's so good. Because I just imagine he's like, look, Gran, I'm doing it. This is me trying. Give me a break, woman. Oh, that's so good. Poor Neville. I've been having a hard time adjusting. Yeah, he has. ah I don't know if he necessarily ever had the shiniest wheels,
00:18:44
Speaker
But whatever wheels he did have were rusting. And then I didn't know if you cared if I came back. Neville's grand, I swear. My gosh. Let me meet her in a dark alley. Carmen. Well, I was thinking in a completely different direction. And I gave i gave him, it's nice to have a friend. OK.
00:19:14
Speaker
If Luna was on this list, that is her song. But but that was a good one for Neville too. Well, thinking at the end, right, is he's like, look, I know we're kind of, but like, I'm standing up against you. And I don't know. I feel like that's so much of what Neville needed though, was to have some of those moments to like, to to go from his, this is me trying to like, Demi Lovato's confident. I feel like he needed those moments.
00:19:44
Speaker
And I feel like having a friend, having friends or like at least people that seemingly tolerated him ah helped him get there. Yeah. I just remember somebody put that on Instagram. It's like, that would be Luna's theme song. And I was like, Oh, it's a pretty good one. But yeah, that's really good for Neville too, though. Honestly, my least favorite, Albus Dumbledore. Me and ol' Albie. We go way back. I gave him two.
00:20:14
Speaker
I did give him enchanted. I feel like. um Just like I was enchanted to meet you, because I just think about the first time he shows up at Perfect Drive of like. Here I am. See, I also am my dazzling glory. I also gave someone enchanted, but it was not Dumbledore. OK. Wonder who it is. um I gave him enchanted and then I I did also give him anti-hero.
00:20:49
Speaker
that true I have this thing where I get older, but just never wiser. It must be exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero. I feel like that one is geared towards like him saying that to Harry of like, you're always rooting for my bud, but here I am holding back all the truths. Yeah.
00:21:10
Speaker
that or I definitely, so I also gave him two. I gave him the Mastermind. Okay. That one is a good one. Yeah. Just because of right, even, even from the get go, like knowing what we know and like looking back through, he, he's, you know, he's check piecing or, you know, chest piecing the whole thing. And it it's still, I don't like it any better. Um, because I also have beef with Dumbledore.
00:21:42
Speaker
Um, cause I don't think it's fair. How do you use this people? Yes. Well, especially cause I mean, even a master, like with mastermind, like just the first chapter alone, like, yes, I get the point that you're trying to make, but Minerva like questions, why would you leave him with these people? She's like, what? No, I don't think he, I stand by my, my opinion on the matter.
00:22:10
Speaker
from a few episodes ago of, I don't think he would have ended up a horrible person, but I think he would have ended up like James. I think he would have had a cocky nature, but yeah hi the mastermind definitely comes into play already in the beginning of the book. Yeah. And then the second one I gave him is, I think he knows.
00:22:30
Speaker
yeah they're all He's such a conspirator. He's such a conspirator and just the general like, I know what Harry's gonna do with this invisibility cloak when I give it to him. I know what he's doing. Like, there's just so much. And in I feel like in Dumbledore's brain, it's probably in that, like, thinking, like, very much in that upbeat, like, this is good. I know what I'm doing. I know all the things. Like, that's, it's not like a victim complex, but I don't know what complex you'd call it. Okay, Minerva McGonagall was very hard for me to give a song based on Sorcerer's Stone.
00:23:08
Speaker
i agree um I gave her the man. Ooh, that's a good one. That's a good one. wellfeing But hers was very hard for me to sort. I mostly wanted to give her a theme song based on Maggie more than Minerva. And so that's where I was trying to like be like, OK, don't channel Maggie Smith. Channel Minerva. Yeah. So I think I ended up doing stuff. I think that fits kind of like in the first half of this series.
00:23:37
Speaker
specifically like one to three. um I gave her the Great War because I feel like I feel like of everyone. She's like one of the few faculty members that's actually like, are we not concerned that we're like allowing these things to happen on campus? Like I feel like that's her the entire time. ah But then I also feel like out of the woods does a good job because she's like,
00:24:07
Speaker
Are we ever like, all right, he's here, but is it over? Have we gotten through like, is he going to be safe? Are students going to be safe? Like, yeah I feel like she's the only one thinking about any of that. Right. No. Yeah. I tried to go that route too. And I almost put the great war. Um, Severus Snape. So his was really hard for me because I kept wanting to give him songs based on what we know. Yeah.
00:24:38
Speaker
And that was really difficult. Um, I did give him, and this probably still applies to that, but I did give him castles crumbling. boom um Okay. Because there's the line. Now I fear I have fallen from grace and I feel like my castle is crumbling down. I watch all my bridges burn to the ground and you don't want to know me. I will just let you down. You don't want to know me now. Yeah, that's fair. I.
00:25:08
Speaker
I went in a different direction. um And an I gave him mean. Like I gave him mean because I feel like with what we know in Sorcerer's Stone he's just coming off as mean and rude and like pathetic because like why is he being mean to this 11 year old child? Like it's coming off his petty and like yeah sure it sort of makes sense when we get information down the line. It it still really doesn't make sense. I don't think it's fair for him to take his feelings on everything out on Harry, but I feel like Mean encompasses just kind of like how surface level it feels at the time. Yeah. No, I agree. Um, Drago Malfoy. I had two songs for him. but I also have two songs for him. Um, I gave him, you're on your own kid. Oh, that's so fun. Cause you know,
00:26:08
Speaker
He's on his own, especially within his familial. like he's He's really on his own with his family. All right, what's the second one that you had? I also gave him bad blood. I also gave him bad blood. Yay. It's just iconic for their meeting. And Harry's like, nope. But he's like the guy who puts his hand out you know to shake and then like on his hair. you know That's the vibe.
00:26:36
Speaker
Did you have to do this? I was thinking that you could be trusted. Did you have to ruin what was shiny? Now it's not rested, Harry. likeve been meant by like sitting wrong ri ah why He's like, we could have been the Potter musical. Honestly, that's. So what was your other one?
00:26:57
Speaker
My other one was better than revenge because it feels very petty and how he's, you know, how he starts acting out like, Oh, let's duel in the lot, you know, let's duel in the trophy room. And then he like reports him. It gives that like petty vibe because he's like, you didn't give me what I wanted. Yes. No, I also almost gave him better than revenge. So that was a run. Nice. I love that we had, we had one that matched in here. I was hoping we'd have.
00:27:26
Speaker
one that would match at some point. Just the one so far. Hey, that's okay. That's fun. I went for the darker routes on some of these. You did. I was going for like, well, things are still upbeat ish of sorcerer stuff. It just gets darker from here, Liz. We can't, we can't think positively. It just works. Oh gosh. Um, Robie's Hagrid.
00:27:54
Speaker
I gave him everything has changed. Oh, that's a good one. The line specifically, like all I've seen since 18 hours ago is green eyes and freckles and your smile. And I'm just kind of thinking about like when he goes to pick Harry up from the disgruntled house. In the back of my mind, making me feel like I just want to know you better. And like, I feel like he tries to really get to know, like he wants to be Harry's friend.
00:28:24
Speaker
Yeah, that's a good one. That's cute. I love that song. um So Hagrid is who I picked Enchanted for. Okay. Because Harry's whole view on life entirely changes. And I feel like Hagrid's a really good person to introduce him to that, to show him like those fun elements and why this could be a really great thing for Harry.
00:28:52
Speaker
And I feel like Enchanted kind of wraps that up in a little bow. Um, Professor Curl. All right. I gave him false God. Ooh, that's a good one. Because of like, they all warned us about times like this. They say the road gets hard and you get lost when you're led by blind faith, but we might just get away with it. Religions in your lips, even if it's a false God, we'd still worship. And I just feel like that's the, the epitome.
00:29:22
Speaker
of the Death Eaters with Voldemort. Yeah, that's a good one. I forget about that, so. I did also give him would have, could have, should have. Ooh, also a good one. And I never would have danced with the devil. Yeah. He's like, but and that's like more post Sorcerer's Stone. He's like, got some regrets.
00:29:50
Speaker
Yeah. I put my money on somebody else in that race, but I will. That's a good one. So I deep cut through back him with should have said no. like Such a good one. Should have said no. Should have gone home. Should have thought twice.
00:30:15
Speaker
look Oh, that's such a like, You should have gone home from the forest. You should have thought twice before a green lake.
00:30:31
Speaker
Some of these are really funny because I just imagine them breaking in the song and just like in front of Voldemort. Should have said no. oh shouldn that fast forwardly go because he did he kind of he let like his life go he let like his autonomy go like um i kind of went for the funnier route with voldemort um hold next um i gave him fresh out the slammer that's so good it's true though we know he's been in that forest but we don't really know what he's
00:31:12
Speaker
What, has he just been in a tree? Like, do we know? Not in a tree. um audience That's so good. I just imagined him coming like, he takes over Kroll's body. Fresh out the slimmer. I know who my first cob will be to. And you're just like,
00:31:40
Speaker
I'm like, who are you calling me on the back of someone else's head? it All of his death eaters come to me. Coming to me. To another body. and Okay. What was your Baltimore? So I did look what you made me do because I feel like it's him centering himself as a victim. He's a victim. It's all your it's your fault I'm here actually.
00:32:07
Speaker
Yeah, that's that feels like the mindset he would have. 100%. Yeah, he he he likes to be the victim. So remember what I said earlier about the like, if what about me was a person, maybe it's actually Voldemort. Maybe it's actually Voldemort. Yeah. What What about me? That's so funny.
00:32:31
Speaker
The hot take of Voldemort is he actually just has pick me syndrome. Honestly, yeah. His theme song is actually the prophecy.
00:32:41
Speaker
Please. Oliver Wood. I gave him change. Oh, that's fine. Purely because I just think of like, because we all know homeboy is obsessed with Quidditch. Yeah. And I just imagine him being this dramatic in Like about a Quidditch match, these walls that they put up to hold us will fall down. It's a revolution. The time will come for us to finally win and we'll sing hallelujah. Yeah. Like that buildup, that like pep talk. Yes. yeah That's good. I just imagine him being that dramatic. That's good. See for him, I chose ready for it.
00:33:25
Speaker
because yes that's i good one that feels like him being like, come on, guy like that feels like his hype anthem to get everyone set for a game. Yes. Or maybe like Bad Blood featuring Kendrick Lamar, that version. Yeah. Especially when they're playing the Slytherins. Yes. Oh, how are we? That's guys a good. That's good. Vernon Darsley. The Darsleys were a little hard for me.
00:33:52
Speaker
um For Vernon, I gave him Florida. Ooh, that's a good one. um Because I liked the, and my friends all smell like weed or little babies, and this city reeks of driving myself crazy. Little did you know your home's really only a town, you're just a guest in, so you work your life away to pay for a timeshare down in Destin. I just feel like he's just trying to yeah get by with as normal of a life as he can get by with, so that felt
00:34:23
Speaker
That's most accurate for me. That's fair. I went the funny route and I gave him, you need to calm down. yeah that one that we just with With how he is with the letters and then like taking the right, like dragging them, you know. 100% would make more sense of like the a whole lot. how does How does the lyric go? The one where she's like, um,
00:34:49
Speaker
stayed up not all night making that sign or making that sign was taken all night like he would be the one that protests. Yeah, right. like That would be him. yeah That's him. That was him, you know, in the evenings nailing the the mail, the letter door shut, like putting the wood on the fireplace. Like that was him. yeah Oh, bless it. Um, for Petunia Dursley, I gave her the bolter as I think just knowing what we know about her. A curious child ever reviled by everyone except her own father with a quite bewitching face, splendidly selfish, charmingly helpless. But yeah, I thought the bolter like just knowing what we know in the future of like
00:35:43
Speaker
Her parents definitely cherished Lily and yeah she probably was like the odd man out. And so I think she like ran from her family for sure. Oh yeah. Um, I did also give her never grow up because of the way she treats Dudley. Yeah, that's fair. So I originally, when we started this call, had nothing.
00:36:07
Speaker
for Petunia because I couldn't think of anything. But hearing your reason for giving Vernon Florida makes me feel like Florida works well for Petunia too in terms of like um her just trying to be like, look, we have a normal life. We're normal people. We're very normal. Like we're just trying to do the thing and be normal. That feels very her coded. Yes. I feel like they were a little interchangeable. Kind of like the Weasley twins. Petunia and Vernon kind of had the same vibes going on. Yeah, yeah, especially because we don't get a ton of them. Right. No, I mean, you don't get a ton of them throughout the series in general, but especially not to later. I mean, when we found out about the letter and everything like that's when you get a little bit more, but. You know. um Deadly Dursley. I gave him Mr. Perfectly Fine because I imagine him screaming that at Harry.
00:37:04
Speaker
Hello, Mr. Perfectly fine. How's your heart? If you're breaking mine, Mr. Always at the right place at the right time, like just being like angry, like you would get to get this life while I'm here. You're ruining my life. That is so funny. So I gave him hits different because I feel like he's so used to everything. And then suddenly Harry has this whole thing and he's like,
00:37:31
Speaker
No, and especially with what little we get from of him as a whole. right it's like he's He's clearly been the favorite. right He's the biological child. He's the favorite. like we're We're unfortunately playing into tropes, stereotypes, stuff like that. um But then Harry has this mystical thing that like immediately puts his parents like in this weird protective thing of, got to tiptoe around the wizard. or he'll you know do And so then Dudley's like, what do you mean we have to tiptoe around him?
00:38:01
Speaker
What do you mean? I can't just beat him up. um like you know Well, and that's kind of the route I took with Mr. Perfectly Fine on it too was that same like, well, you know, how's basically replace how's your life or how's your heart after breaking mine, replace that with how's your life after ruining mine? Right? Yeah. Like, thanks a lot, buddy. and Especially like during the summers, like you're gone during the year and then you're back in the summer with all your magic.
00:38:32
Speaker
go away yes um okay that's all the characters we had nice we had some good we have some good ones there yeah it's actually was really interesting you have to come back on for each book to discuss the next set of characters yes i'm for it which i guess won't really be until prisoner of basketball and the next time we get new characters because chamber secrets you don't really Well, you get Lockhart, but you can combine two and three.

Future Episodes & Wrap-up

00:39:05
Speaker
Yeah, probably will, because honestly, there's not that many new characters. But we have to give Lockhart a theme song. like We have to. They're kind of tight forever. I know. How am I going to pick a random like bonus I had for Dumbledore that I thought of when I was like ah showering the other day?
00:39:28
Speaker
in like preparation, because I've been listening to like all the discography in prep for this to make sure i I try not to forget anything. Message in a bottle. And I just picture him like all the different ways he's trying to get the letters.
00:39:41
Speaker
but yeah He's like, okay, let's send it this way. Let's try this one. Think of all the outsourcing they did with all those owls. Like, I know that's some wasted government dollars.
00:39:56
Speaker
like, stupid hard words. I was just like, but I'm also just a huge message in a bottle fan. So maybe that's why. It's also kind of crazy, like thinking about it, like, why didn't Dumbledore just go get him? You know, I think we all want to know. Cause he had to have known that like, Vernon and Petunia weren't going to be like, yeah, cool. Go on. Right. yeah They weren't going to be supportive. I mean, let's be honest, so. It's interesting that he didn't go get him to begin with like without even sending Hagrid without sending any letters like why wouldn't you just go pick him up? Yeah, I don't know. I know all of it like from his perspective is it somehow preparing Harry to like better defeat Voldemort. I don't really know if some of that was necessary. I don't know. I don't know what they're about.
00:40:54
Speaker
yeah Um, okay. So that wraps up our discussion. Um, thank you, Liz for coming on and filling in for Hallie. Thank you for having me. It's always fun to, to have our gab sessions and that's even better when they're recorded. Yeah. Um, so tell everyone where they can follow you. Oh gosh. Well, uh, I think the best place to follow me.
00:41:22
Speaker
is on my book Stagram. It's at LizAnnYoung97. I didn't get creative. I just converted my personal Instagram that I never used. ah That's the best place to follow me. But if you also want to keep up with Expecto Podtronum, we're on Instagram at Expecto Podtronum. We post weekly episodes and they're happening right now as we speak. ah We actually just had a really fun guest.
00:41:50
Speaker
ah One of the hosts of Speak Beastie, the Fantastic Beasts podcast was just on our show. We had a great time. It was a fun little reunion since one of the Expecto hosts, A.B., was a host and producer on Speak Beastie. And I was over there for like a hot minute doing social media. but So it was a fun little reunion. And they're very short bite-sized episodes, like 20 to 28 minutes usually. So really easy for like communities.
00:42:19
Speaker
That's actually exactly when I listened to them is on my way to work. Oh, nice. Like a perfect timing for me getting to work. So right. That was our check. That was the goal. Yes. That's not our goal with these. They take that as long as they take. Honestly, we gab too much to keep them short. That's the fact. Um, but yes, everyone go follow Liz on her books to Graham and go check out expecto pod Tronum.
00:42:48
Speaker
um Be sure to follow Family Fiction. um Be sure to follow the podcast on Spotify, Apple Music, wherever you get podcasts and write us five stars. um Also be sure to follow us on Instagram at Family Fiction Pod where we post our questions of the week and we have our house poll on there. So go vote on which house you're in. We're trying to keep a running tally, which is proving rather difficult because I didn't realize on that thing that you can't see It shows you percentages, but it doesn't show you like, it doesn't show me like three people voted for Hufflepuff. Oh, really? Yeah. So I'm trying to figure out there's a way I can change that. So, um, if you don't want to vote in the caption, just comment but below the post because that might actually be better. Um, cause now I'm just having to do math and that's not fun for anyone. just Um, yeah, nobody wants to do math. Math is rough.
00:43:49
Speaker
Um, also we will have a question a week with this week's episode. And that is what Taylor Swift songs would you assign to the characters that are different from what we assigned.
