Chess Game Sacrifice
00:00:00
Speaker
Once I make my move, then you're free to check the king. No! Ron, no! What is it? He's going to sacrifice himself! No, you You want to stop Snape from getting that stone or not? If you have to go on, Harry, I know it. Not me, not Hermione, you.
Harry Potter Chapters 15-17 Discussion
00:00:24
Speaker
And to be honest,
00:00:56
Speaker
we are going to be doing chapters 15 through 17 of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Yes, it's the final chapters of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone so this is going to be a lot of fun.
00:01:14
Speaker
But I've had a lot of fun. um So before we get started, we do want to go ahead and give spoiler alerts for, you know, the rest of this book, the rest of the series, any of the movies. If you are not wanting to be spoiled on anything Harry Potter, you've come to the wrong place because we are going to be talking about quite a few things. um These are some crazy chapters and there's a lot to cover. So yeah.
Current Reads and Favorites
00:01:42
Speaker
um But before we do that, we are going to do our currently reading. Um, Hallie? You want to start us off? Okay, so my current read has not changed from last episode. It is still The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King by Carissa Broadbent.
00:01:57
Speaker
Carmen, what's your currently reading? Mine is still Carnage by Chantal Tessier. I have not been reading at all. I started rewatching Teen Wolf. I'm on season three, the best season. Void Styles has entered the screen. um So quite frankly,
00:02:15
Speaker
Just haven't really had the drive to read. So it's been a distraction. So here we are um We also are going to cover our book of the month this week um which if you haven't listened to prior episodes we only do this once a month and it's the Favorite book from the last month um So our favorite book of December Hallie won't you start us off?
00:02:38
Speaker
Okay so mine was Brutal Obsession by S. Massery. It is it should be. It is a dark romance and I loved this book. I cannot quit thinking about it and yes It's my second dark romance that I've read and it was a good one. It's a fantastic book. I will say the rest of the series. I've only read the second one and it left a lot to be desired. um I haven't read the third one. I don't know if I will to be honest. I think it's kind of lost my interest at this point but it is a really good, I tell Telly it would be a good like starter dark romance for her to get in a dark romance with. Yes.
00:03:22
Speaker
So Carmen what was your book of the month? My book of the month was Kate by Tate James which is the final book in the Madison Kate series.
00:03:34
Speaker
um I read this whole series within a month and was completely obsessed and the final book was just amazing. I think they did it t did a great job of wrapping up everything that is you know has been mystery and everything that is you know things that were left unanswered so yeah I thought it was a great ending to a series and I can't wait to read the other series that connects. Okay without further ado we will go ahead and get into today's discussion.
Detention in the Forbidden Forest
00:04:10
Speaker
um Starting off with chapter 15 the Forbidden Forest um we open up with Filch taking the kids um Harry and Hermione off to McGonagall's office
00:04:23
Speaker
after he caught them on the astronomy tower. They forgot the visibility cloak at the top and she caught them at the bottom. Hermione and Harry sit nervously awaiting their punishment until McGonagall appears with Neville in tow. um He was caught trying to warn them about Malfoy bragging about catching them, which is just really unfortunate for Neville and I feel like it's the epitome of everything that happens to Neville.
00:04:53
Speaker
um One thing I did want to point out is Harry does think to himself how could they have been so stupid to forget the cloak? Exactly. Harry I'm asking myself the same question. McGonagall thinks it was all a planned to set Malfoy up and it got Neville in trouble by circumstance. She's taking 50 points from Gryffindor knocking them out of first and that is 50 points each putting them in dead last. Oh but don't worry. I'm sure that won't stay forever. Don't even get me started. um All the Gryffindors are now mad at Harry and Hermione because it's the next day and everybody knows what happened. um Even Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw are upset because they wanted to see Slytherin lose as much as Gryffindor did. um So Harry basically went from most popular guy in school to least popular guy in school
00:05:47
Speaker
which is pretty much where he stays let's just be honest if we're going off a Goblet of Fire references oh yeah they still don't like him um Ron tries comforting Harry by saying Fred and George have lost tons of points before um but they've never lost that much so that comfort does not go a long way Harry is done with doing things that will get him in trouble lol um he says that and then literally the next chapter he's getting himself in trouble it's fine Um, he offers to resign a seeker, but Wood won't let him. Says that he is the most important person on the team pretty much. Let's be honest, he doesn't outright say that, but we know that's what Wood. Yes, thanks. Hermione is keeping silent in class to not draw attention to herself, which is, you know, very un-Hermany-ish. But I think it's kind of funny because in Hermione answering questions, that's how she's earned Gryffindor a lot of points. So I feel like
00:06:45
Speaker
she's cutting off her nose to spite her face here because she could become their hero by winning points back depending on who's class. If it's Snape's class just take white because he's not going to give you all points, but yeah like McGonagall, thank you. Harry, Ron, and Hermione use the time while they're on the outs with the Gryffindors and everybody else in the school to take the time to study for exams.
Snape's Suspicion and Forest Mysteries
00:07:07
Speaker
um It's a week before the exams and Harry is out catching Quirrell talking to himself in a classroom And we hear, no, no, not again, please. It sounded as though someone was threatening him. Harry moved closer. All right, all right, he heard Quirrell sob. Next second, Quirrell came hurrying out of the classroom, straightening his turban. He was pale and looked as though he was about to cry.
00:07:33
Speaker
You know, me every day. um He started out of sight. Harry didn't think Quirrell had even noticed him. He waited until Quirrell's footsteps had disappeared then peered into the classroom. It was empty. Harry takes this to think that Snape was in the room with Quirrell. He notices a door open on the other side of the classroom and thinks Snape has just left the room. We find out later that that was not in fact Snape in there with him. He is just straight up talking to the man on the back of his head.
00:08:03
Speaker
I just immediately they just immediately blame Snape. It's Snape. He must have been in the room. Poor Snape. He's always blamed. And he's not even doing anything wrong. He's literally trying to repay a debt to James, which we'll learn about later. Bless.
00:08:21
Speaker
Harry rushes to the library to tell Ron and Hermione um they think Snape has discovered how to get past the trials and that it's going to be happening soon. um Harry wants to go to Dumbledore, but Ron doesn't think he'll believe them. LOL. I don't think Dumbledore would have helped either way.
00:08:41
Speaker
because based on later events, he kind of was prepping Harry for this exact moment. um You know, quality, quality Hogwarts service, quality mentorship.
00:08:53
Speaker
um Later on harry you're on sorry Harry, Hermione, and Neville get their detention assignments. They are to meet Mr. Filch in the entrance hall at 11 p.m. When they get down there they see Malfoy standing with Filch. Harry had forgotten all about Malfoy being punished with them. Filch discusses the old punishments as he walks them down to Hagrid's hut which the old punishments they're a little they're a little crazy um we have hang you by your wrists from the ceiling for a few days he's still got the chains in his office um and i think there was one at one point where he says like later that he would hang people by their thumbs he threatens that later on that's like another book i think that's like medieval torture yeah filch is just a little bit better that he's a squib it's fine
00:09:51
Speaker
in a school for children um they found out their detention is with Hagrid in the Forbidden Forest you know just some of that Hogwarts safety at its finest literally gets hold at the beginning of the school year do not do not go in there unless you wish to die a painful death but hey we're gonna send you there for detention
00:10:13
Speaker
I will say this before we get started on this next little section of this chapter. This is by far the creepiest chapter in all of Harry Potter. Yes. I would literally have lost my mind if this was my detention.
00:10:26
Speaker
um they find out they'll be with Hagrid until dawn once again some quality you know teaching going on we have we're sending students first years who have no idea what they're doing with any sort of magic essentially um often to a very dangerous part of the school grounds and not only that but we are also going to keep them up at all hours of the night So no sleep for them. I just don't understand. Malfoy sounds panicked and learns and tries to get out of it, but it's detention or expulsion. At that point, I would rather be expelled. Like I'm not going into any creepy forest. Absolutely crazy. um They find out they are looking for an injured or dead unicorn. This is the second one in a week um that ha Hagrid has found blood from.
00:11:19
Speaker
So they know that something's going on. um They don't know if this one's dead or alive. If somebody murders Unicorn, they deserve jail. Yes. You deserve prison, but you won't get time.
00:11:34
Speaker
Shout out to Taylor Swift. Malfoy wants fang with him and Hagrid tells him that's fine, but he's a ruddy coward. That's fine, love that for him. um Hagrid, Harry, and Hermione go one way with Neville and Draco going the other. Poor Neville. I know, poor Neville. Of all people to get stuck with. Hagrid tells them to send up green flares if they find the unicorn, red flares if you get in trouble, and the others will come running.
00:12:02
Speaker
Do we honestly think that if Harry, Ron, I always want to say Harry, Ron, Ron just comes off the tongue. If Harry, Hermione, and Hagrid were in trouble and sent up red flares, do we think Draco and Neville would come to the rescue? I don't think Draco would. Neville? Draco definitely wouldn't. I don't know if Neville would, I'm gonna be honest. Maybe? In if we're maybe later books. Maybe later Neville, but not really.
00:12:26
Speaker
Yeah, I'd be curious. I mean, he does stand up to them in the one of the next chapters, but I don't know that he would outright be like, I'm going to save the day.
Unicorn Encounter and Prophecy
00:12:37
Speaker
Not at this stage. No hesitation. Go save them. No hesitation. Yeah. Maybe go get a teacher. Yeah.
00:12:43
Speaker
I don't know. It'd be interesting. It'd be the roundabout way yeah to save them. I don't know. Maybe we're not giving enough credit, but I'm not really. I know for a fact I also wouldn't. He'd be like, forget y'all, bye. Yes. As they're walking through the forest, Hagrid tells them it's not easy to catch a unicorn.
00:13:02
Speaker
Then when they hear noises, Hagrid warns Hermione and Harry to get behind a big tree. Something is slithering nearby. Immediately now. Immediately now. They just hear the slithering noises. To quote, something was slithering over dead leaves nearby. It sounded like a cloak trailing along the ground.
00:13:24
Speaker
Nope. Absolutely not. I would immediately be booking it out of that forest. Be like, forget it. I'll get expelled. I'm not doing this. Yes. um As the sound gets farther away um and Hagrid knows it's not the unicorn or a werewolf, wink wink, um they get out of from behind the tree and a centaur enters the clearing. This is where we meet our first centaur, Ronan, and we learn that Hagrid knows him as well. He knows everybody.
00:13:54
Speaker
Yes, to be honest Ronan seems a little bit loopy. He enters and immediately starts talking about how Mars is bright tonight, unusually bright. um When Hagrid begins to ask him questions, he just goes on and on about the sky and how Mars seems bright and he keeps looking skyward.
00:14:13
Speaker
Ronan does say that the forest hides many secrets. Wink, wink. Wink, wink. Wonder who that could be. Several someones. um And honestly the forest continues to hide many secrets because this is kind of a little bit of a foreshadowing end into Hagrid keeping Grop in the Forbidden Forest because nobody wants to go in there. um Another centaur hits the scene. His name is Bane. He also continues to repeat Mars is Bright tonight.
00:14:46
Speaker
um Haggard thinks that what they heard was um what has been killing unicorns, meaning the slithering sound. They think that's what's been killing the unicorns. And as they're walking away from the centaurs, Haggard does mention that centaurs tend to know more than they're letting on. um but he kind of awkwardly backs out of the conversation with Ronan and Bane like all right i'm gonna go this way um which the centaurs are a whole thing in and of themselves i think they all have a bit of a screw loose but they definitely know more than they're letting on i think they're high most of the time
00:15:29
Speaker
I think that they just legitimately can. sense i don't and they're off I don't know about like if they can read the stars or whatever. I don't think they're seers. I talked to somebody about this last night about I think that they you know they know about the prophecy that comes to be explained in Order of the Phoenix. They know about all these things and they are literally just doing their best. They are pulling peak Dumbledore and they know the answers. They will not answer the questions because it would throw off what's to come. But I definitely think they know what's going to happen. They're very vague.
00:16:10
Speaker
like I wonder though if they know how everything's gonna happen like Horcrux Harry and all or if they just know the prophecy that's what uh that's an unanswered question that I don't think we'll ever find out the answer to well a lot of times I think with the idea of prophecies prophecies and stuff a lot of the times planets and sometimes the way that they're aligned or how they look a lot of times planets and prophecies go hand in hand sometimes in some books So um maybe that way, I don't know. It'd be interesting if they were kind of like seers a little bit. they I don't know if they are seers, like I legitimately think they just know about the prophecy and that's not anything new. I mean maybe a seer told them the prophecy because that's how we get told the prophecy later is a seer saw it and then like you know um what's her face?
00:17:04
Speaker
I can't think of her name. Her name just flew right out of my brain. The divination teacher. Tremblay? Trelawney. Trelawney. Trelawney even has like a whole vision later about Harry and the prophecy. So I think that they just have been speaking to some seers. I don't know, interesting to think about if they know just like what the prophecy knows which is just base knowledge or if they know about the Horcrux, Harry and all because that's not in the prophecy. So interesting thoughts. Um later on Harry feels like they're being watched
00:17:41
Speaker
and they see red sparks coming from the direction of Neville and Draco. um Hagrid rushes off to go check it out and when he returns, he's absolutely fuming. Malfoy had scared Neville as a joke and Neville had panicked and threw up the red flares. Poor Neville. I know. Hagrid decides that they are going to swap places and Harry is going to go with Draco and Neville's going to come with Hermione and Hagrid.
00:18:11
Speaker
Um that's a punishment in and of itself to get switched to be with Draco. Yes. That's like double detention. Yeah. Um Harry, Draco, and Fang set off in the direction that Hagrid just came from with Draco and Neville. Um they do find the dead unicorn. Harry hears a slithering sound coming from a nearby bush and a hooded figure crawls across the ground towards them. Nope.
00:18:39
Speaker
a It stops at the unicorn and drinks the blood. Malfoy screams, giving away their position, and flees with fame. Way to go! The hooded figure clocks Harry and comes towards him while Harry is locked with fear. um And we have the quote. Then out of the shadows, a hooded figure came crawling across the ground like some stalking beast. The cloaked figure reached the unicorn, lowered its head over the wound in the animal's side, and began to drink its blood.
00:19:10
Speaker
left out the end of the sentence um then a pain like he never felt before pierced his head it was as though his scar were on fire half blinded he staggered backwards so immediately Harry's scar is hurting which is already a bad sign and if we know anything from later books it is that anytime Harry's scar is hurting it's no bueno Well, first of all, if I would have seen a hooded figure crawling across the ground like a beast, I'd immediately be booking it. I wouldn't scream, but I would book it and leave. I mean, Draco's just stupid, like, as far as, like, why would you scream? Like, you literally it didn't see you until just now. Way to go.
00:19:53
Speaker
You just leave Harry there to die. Well, he doesn't care about that. No. um Just as Harry's about to be attacked by the Hooded Figure, another centaur hits the scene. His name is Ferbens. He bursts in to save Harry. He tells Harry after the Hooded Figure has been scared off, he tells Harry the forest is not safe at this time, especially for you.
00:20:16
Speaker
Thank you for being maddeningly unhelpful. um Ronan and Bane burst in just as Harry is about to get on Forenz's back so that he can ride out of the forest, safety. They fuss at Forenz about Harry riding him and they say, Bane says, what have you been telling him? Remember, Forenz, we are sworn not to set ourselves against the heavens. Have we not read what is to come in the movements of the planets?
00:20:43
Speaker
bane kicks his back legs in anger for the best what is that to do with us centaurs are not centaurs are concerned with what has been foretold it is not our business to run around like donkeys after sh stray humans in our forest so bane and ronin not happy with friends nope um fussed at him about what he has told Harry, clearly giving off the impression that they definitely know more than what's going on and essentially they're just mad with friends because knowing how the prophecy is going to take place, I think they do know that Voldemort has to kill Harry in the end. Whether they know that he's a horcrux or not,
00:21:28
Speaker
I think they understand that that, you know, that's what the prophecy for foretells, is that Harry will have to be killed by Voldemort. And they, I mean, at this point, they don't know how many times that's going to happen, how many times the attempt on Harry's life is going to take place. So, in their mind, Forenz just really screwed with the prophecy. Yep. Because it could have happened then and there. And then, you know, Cut to Black director Christopher cumba Columbus comes across the screen and the movie's over. It all takes place a little bit sooner. um They're so interesting, the centaurs are. Yeah, it is interesting though to think about like if Pharen's hadn't interfered, what would have happened? Would Harry have been able to fend Voldemort off? Or would everything have happened a lot sooner? Harry comes back to life.
00:22:19
Speaker
Then Dumbledore comes down to the Forbidden Forest and tells him everything. Roll credits? Yeah, roll credits. That's it. Friends takes off with Harry on his back um and he tells Harry it is a monstrous thing to slay a unicorn saying only one who has nothing to lose and everything to gain would commit such a crime. The blood of a unicorn will keep you alive even if you are an inch from death, but at a terrible price. You have slain something something pure and defenseless to save yourself, and you will have but a half-life, a cursed life, from the moment the blood touches your lips." um He goes on to say, unless all you need is to stay alive long enough to drink something else, something that will bring you back to full strength and power,
00:23:05
Speaker
something that will mean you can never die. Mr. Potter, do you know what is hidden in the school at this very moment? So immediately the Cendors already know about Sorcerer's Stone. Again, they know everything. They've been talking to Dumbledore Square.
00:23:20
Speaker
I just have a little, a little powwow. Literally. This is what you're not supposed to tell people, which is basically all the important information. Yes. um So he asks Harry if he knows what's being kept in the school. um He asks if he knows of someone who would want to take the stone and use it for exactly what he just described to Harry. Here he comes out and says Voldemort.
00:23:44
Speaker
um Just then Hagrid and group find them in the forest. Harry descends from Forenz and Forenz wishes Harry luck and leaves. um He says good luck Harry Potter. Said Forenz the planets have been read wrongly before now even by centaurs. I hope this is one of those times.
00:24:04
Speaker
So he knows that Harry's gonna die but that that's what makes me think they don't know about Horcrux Harry because they don't know he's coming back. They just know like no he's gonna at some point kick the bucket and that's gonna be unfortunate for us all. Oh well.
Final Exams and Fluffy's Secret
00:24:20
Speaker
um They to the common room to find Ron asleep. He had been waiting up for them. um Harry wakes him and tells him and Hermione what happened with friends and the hooded figure. Ron fusses at Harry for saying Voldemort multiple times.
00:24:34
Speaker
um He and Harry just continues to say the word as if he's not hearing Ron at all. Hermione seems worried. ah Dumbledore is the only one Voldemort was ever afraid of. With him around, Voldemort wouldn't dare come near Harry.
00:24:50
Speaker
hello well um and then they all head off to bed after Hermione doubts the fortune telling business of centaurs which I think is hilarious because we find out you know in Prisoner of Azkaban when they're taking divination that is literally Hermione's like biggest pet peeve is that class she cannot stand that class she hates it please don't even talk about that class around her So, immediately, she's already hating on divination. We love it. um They all head off to bed, and when Harry gets to his bed, he finds his cloak under his sheets with a note that says, just in case. Gee, wonder who left that note. um And my only other notes for this chapter is Doubledore is literally putting Harry through trials to prepare him, quote, like a pig for slaughter.
00:25:42
Speaker
yep he's prepping him for a later the worst person ever yes and i what ron the way that it's referenced of ron being panicked about the name is a major foreshadowing um ron yells stop saying the name said ron in a terrified whisper as if he thought voldemort could hear them And we find out later that that was how Voldemort was tracking a lot of people down, was that if they used his name, he could then find them. So major foreshadowing going on. Yep. All right.
00:26:21
Speaker
Chapter 16, Through the Trap Door. It is officially exam time at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. They have special quills with anti-cheating spells on them for the written exams. um They are able to perform both written and practical exams. um Some of the practical exams involve um with Professor Flitwick in making a pineapple tap dance across the desk with Professor McGonagall turning a mouse into a snuff box and they got extra points for how pretty the snuff box was which is
00:26:58
Speaker
very funny um and Snape made them all nervous breathing down their necks while they tried to remember how to make a forgetfulness potion. Sounds about right. Um oddly enough Neville should be really good at that. Yeah um Harry is trying to ignore the pain that's in his forehead throughout his exams. He can't sleep due to nightmares of a hooded figure dripping blood. Poor Harry, I love. um Their last exam is History of Magic with Professor Benz, and as they leave, Hermione is feeling very good about her results.
00:27:36
Speaker
They wander down to the lake where the twins and Lee are tickling the tentacles of the giant squid and we get our first shot at the giant squid. They love. I hate that they took that out of the movie because I think it's hilarious like in Goblet of Fire they're in the Black Lake and that's where Mr. Squid hangs out so what been a good time to supply that.
00:27:59
Speaker
They know that they'll get their exam results in a week and while they're fretting about those results, Harry tells them about his scar but Ron and Hermione don't seem worried.
00:28:11
Speaker
Okay, Lull. Harry has a lurking feeling something bad is coming um and he wants to go see Hagrid to ask about how he acquired the egg as he remembers something vaguely.
00:28:25
Speaker
um They rush down to Hagrid's and Harry asks Hagrid all about how he got the dragon egg and essentially Hagrid confesses that he had met a fella in a pub and that he had asked a bit about the sort of creatures he looked after at Hogwarts. He told him about the different creatures, um even mentioning Fluffy as a three-headed dog.
00:28:52
Speaker
and when the stranger essentially fluffs Hagrid up and says you know how could you ever tame a thing like that he tells him that fluff he's a piece of cake if you know how to calm him down just play him a bit of music and he'll go straight off to sleep oh Hagrid and then he says the most Hagrid line of all I shouldn't have told you that um That's literally his motto, yes. So they all figure out that it was all a setup to learn more about Fluffy so that Snape, they assume it's Snape, can get past Fluffy um and down into the chamber where the rest of the trials are.
00:29:35
Speaker
um The trio runs up to tell Dumbledore, but find out that he is gone to the Ministry of Magic. McGonagall lets them know. um They tell McGonagall it's urgent and it's about the stone. After seeming very shocked that they know anything at all, she assures them that it's well protected and not to worry.
00:29:55
Speaker
they know Snape is going to try to get the stone tonight um just as they're discussing it Snape comes up behind them and warns Harry about wandering around at night which is very funny because it sounds like a threat but he's actually telling him like Harry please for the love of god stay in your room go to sleep like a normal child quit putting me through my paces my man um The trio makes a plan to sneak out to go after Snape after they set Hermione to stand outside the teacher's break room to wait and see where Snape goes. It doesn't work out and she returns to the common room empty-handed. Harry does initially plan to go alone, but they step in to let him know he won't be alone and that they'll be helping him.
00:30:45
Speaker
After dinner, they wait in the common room waiting for people to go to bed. um Right as they're about to leave, Neville tries to stop them, but Hermione stuns him with a Metrificus Dotalis spell, and we get our another moment of poor Neville.
00:31:01
Speaker
He's just trying to be the big man on campus. He's trying to save Gryffindor from losing any more points. Please for the love of God, Harry, go to bed um and gets his rear handed to him by Hermione.
00:31:16
Speaker
Bless him. It's fine. Everything's fine.
The Stone's Challenges
00:31:20
Speaker
They leave and head towards the third floor corridor where Fluffy is and nearly get caught by peeves until Harry impersonates the Bloody Baron and scares peeves off. Which I thought was very funny. Poor peeves. yeah Poor peeves. Hey everybody.
00:31:38
Speaker
um When they enter enter the room they find a harp already at Fluffy's feet and it's been enchanted to play. um Just then the harp stops playing and Fluffy wakes up. Yay.
00:31:53
Speaker
um Just in time, Harry pulls out Hagrid's flute and puts Fluffy back to sleep. The trio gets in through the trapdoor and find an empty chamber just as a plant begins to wrap around them and suffocate them.
00:32:11
Speaker
gosh We love that these things are all in a school for children. um Hermione remembers how to free them from devil's snare which is what the plant is and uses magic to set it aflame like she did on Snape. And they would have died in this very moment with Hermione.
00:32:31
Speaker
Let's be clear though, actually, Harry might have died when he was about to get flung off the room, if not for Hermione in that moment. I don't know if Snape's counter curse would have pulled through.
00:32:43
Speaker
died multiple times if it weren't for Hermione. She is the MVP of the series forever. She sets Harry and Ron free with a spell that sets the plant on fire and they head down a stone passageway leading only one way. As they get closer to the next room they hear wings. um They believe it to be birds and when they get in the room they see a door on the other side of the room. They make a break for it and try a low Hamura upon the door only to find that that does not work. I don't know why Any of them thought that they would set a trial that can be completed by Alohomora, a first year spell. What do they think? Do they really think Flitwick was like, hey, this will stop somebody? Like, no, obviously there's another task here, fellas. Jeez. They discover that the birds are not in fact birds and they are keys.
00:33:41
Speaker
and looking around at the keys they discovered that one of them is an old-fashioned key um and that has to be the only one that can open the door because why would they make all the keys look the same? Not sure why that wasn't a thought to put in place. Why wouldn't you make all the keys look the same?
00:33:58
Speaker
I don't know. Because it wasn't part of the plot. Yeah. Because the plot said so. They find three enchanted brooms in the room with them. They get on them and fly around till they finally get the right key in their hand. They get back on the ground and open the door to the other side.
00:34:20
Speaker
um They move into the next room where a giant game of wizard's chess awaits. And we get the very popular line from the movies that's not actually in the books, not me, not Hermione, you. We love it. um They each have to play a spot on the board and Ron leads them to the game as Harry becomes the bishop, Hermione, queen side castle, and as for one, he'll be a knight.
00:34:50
Speaker
ah They learn it's exactly like Wizard's chest as one of the pieces gets sacrificed and blown to smithereens by another piece. um In the end of the game, Ron learns that the only way for Harry to take the king is for Ron to sacrifice his knight.
Quirrell and Voldemort's Revelation
00:35:08
Speaker
As he sacrifices himself, he gets blown away from the knight, gets dragged off the board, and is unconscious.
00:35:15
Speaker
Harry takes the king and wins the game. They find Ron still unconscious but decide to move on um through the trials and that Ron will be okay. I don't know why they just decide to leave him. It's an interesting moment. Once I make my move then you're free to check the king. No! Ron no! What is it? He's going to sacrifice him himself! No you can't! There must be another way!
00:35:45
Speaker
You want to stop Snape from getting that stone or not? If you have to go on, Harry, I know it. Not me, not Hermione, you. It's a beautiful scene. I have a a tree ornament that says that like whole scene.
00:36:00
Speaker
um As Harry and Hermione push on into the next room, they find a knocked out troll, courtesy of who they think is Snape. LOL not Snape. Um they move on into the next room this and I think it's funny that they actually get to bypass a room because like surprised that's already been taken care of. Um they move on into the next room with which has to be none other than Severus Snape's trial because there are potions in the room and we get a riddle basically coming down to the fact that
00:36:34
Speaker
there's seven bottles three are safe oh no three are poison sorry another seven reference yes there's our another seven reference um seven bottles three are poison of course that's Snape's trial three of these are poison don't drink these well um the riddle says danger lies before you while safety lies behind two of us will help you whichever you would find one among us seven will let you move ahead another will transport the drinker back instead two among our number hold only nettle one three of us are killers waiting hidden in line
00:37:15
Speaker
Choose unless you wish to stay here forevermore. To help you in your choice, we give you these clue these clues four. First, however slightly the poison tries to hide, you will always find some on Nettlewine's left side.
00:37:31
Speaker
Second, different are those who stand at either end, but if you would move onward, neither is your friend. Third, as you see clearly, all are different sides. Neither dwarf nor giant holds death in their insides. Fourth, the second left and the second on the right are twins. Once you taste them, they're different at first sight.
00:37:55
Speaker
So Hermione breaks down the riddle, and you know, once again, saves Harry's rear, discovers that seven bottles, um three are poison, one gets them through the doorway of black fire, and the other one will take them back. Hermione works out which one it is. um Harry takes the potion to move forward, as there is only enough for one drinker, um while Hermione takes the potion to go back for Ron. He's going to, she's going to go back for Ron. I don't know why she didn't just stay with Ron.
00:38:25
Speaker
Whatever. um Harry moves into the last chamber to find someone already there. It's not Snape and it's not Voldemort. We do actually get a line in that chapter that is one of my favorite Hermione chapters.
00:38:40
Speaker
me books and cleverness they're more important things friendship and bravery i just like i love that line she's so good um chapter 17 the man with two faces um when harry enters the room he finds a quarrel professor Carol standing in the room smiling back at Harry. Not creepy at all. Thank you very much. Why is he smiling at him? um The whole time he's been acting, give him an Oscar. He's done a great day job.
00:39:18
Speaker
um He's been acting scared and stuttery this whole time. He's not actually any of those things. um He reveals that he is the one who tried to kill Harry in the Quidditch match and that Snape had been trying to save him with a counter curse. And that is also why Snape refereed that next match was to keep that from happening again. um And Quirrell reveals he would have had him if not for Hermione bumping into him on the way to set Snape afire.
00:39:47
Speaker
I feel like we owe Snape a big apology, people. Um, Quirrell then binds Harry with magic, um, with rope, and reveals that he is also the one who let the troll in, but Snape had stopped him once again. Thank you, Snape. Um, he goes to stand in front of the mirror of Aerosid, which is in the room with them, ah lol to it being moved. You know, Dumbledore says,
00:40:18
Speaker
It's but getting moved to a new home. I urge you not to go looking for it. But LOL, you gave him all the tools to go looking for just that. We love.
00:40:30
Speaker
He's the worst. um He reveals that the mirror is the key to finding the snow the stone um and mentions that his master was not very happy with him when he failed to steal the stone originally from Gringotts. He was most deplete displeased. He punished me, decided he would have to keep a closer watch on me. So this is where I kind of have the thought of like clearly Voldemort hasn't always been attached to him.
00:41:00
Speaker
Do we think Voldemort was like a standing adult person? Not person because he's not human. But was he like fully upright? Or and just really feeble? Or did he come to him in baby-volley form like he is in Goblet of Fire? It's very interesting to think of the fact that he was scared of something that was what really looks like a fetus. Looks like a hairless fetus. She's chilling in the forest in Albania.
00:41:31
Speaker
and decides I will make you my master. A hairless fetus that looks like a snake. I will worship you. It's weird. So it's kind of funny to think that Voldemort was like, I'm gonna make you scared of me even though I look like disgusting. Like a fetus. And then eventually was like, let me attach myself to the back of your head. Interesting maneuver.
00:41:56
Speaker
um Hurl reveals that he has a master. And the Voldemort had punished him. Harry knows the mirror will show him where it is if he knows that he just needs to find it so he can keep it from Quirrell, which is a big reason and why the mirror does in fact show him where it is. Voldemort whispers to Quirrell and tells him to use the boy. Quirrell drags him to the mirror and finds out that the stone is in fact in his pocket. Hasn't been there all along. It only appears whenever he sees himself in the mirror.
00:42:31
Speaker
wink back at himself and place the stone in his pocket, which I think is layers. Harry lies to Quirrell telling him that he sees himself standing with the Quidditch House Cup um and Voldemort wants to speak to him directly. um Voldemort wants to speak to him face to face, um so Quirrell removes his turban to reveal Voldemort on the back of his head and quote, it was chalk white with glaring red eyes and slits for nostrils like a snake.
00:43:01
Speaker
and i it's I maybe understand why they did it because they were children's books and in retrospect they were like meant for children movies. But the fact that they took out the red eyes is a crazy thing to change but maybe they thought it would be too creepy. But I mean honestly the man's out to kill everybody who's not a pureblood. Like I feel like the creep factor's already there. Yeah.
00:43:26
Speaker
Whatever. But I know you can, I just can imagine if these books were written today, he probably would have not looked like that. It makes me wonder if the show's gonna give him the red eyes. Probably. Maybe because it's on HBO and they're just probably at some point like, children, I gotta watch this.
00:43:43
Speaker
Voldemort reveals that Quirrell was drinking the unicorn blood for him to sustain sustain him in Quirrell's body until he can regain full force on his own. He wants Harry to join him but Harry refuses and runs towards the door. Quirrell lunges for him um as Harry um begins to feel his scar hurt um and he realizes that Kroll is now screaming in agony himself as his hands begin to blister after touching Harry. um His hands begin to blister after touching Harry and Harry realizes what's happening and goes to grab Kroll's face. His face begins to blister just like his hands um and Harry then wraps him wrapped Kroll in his arms in his loving aright embrace.
00:44:36
Speaker
um and just as he falls to the ground with Quirrell, he feels Quirrell being wrenched out of his hands just as he hears somebody calling his name and he blacks out. When he wakes up, the first thing he sees is Dumbledore and notices that he's in the hospital wing. He alarms Dumbledore to the stone, but Dumbledore assures him that Quirrell doesn't have it.
00:45:01
Speaker
um And then we do have one of my most favorite Dumbledore lines where he says, what happened down in the dungeons between you and Professor Kroll is a complete secret secret. So naturally the whole school knows. Literally. I love that line and I think it's so relatable to not just Harry Potter, but everyday life. Literally. It's supposed to be a secret so naturally everyone knows.
00:45:30
Speaker
literally nothing in that school stays a secret. Yes um the whole school knows what happened um Harry's been out for three days um double door reveals that he was the one calling out Harry's name and when he arrived he thought he was nearly too late to save Harry kind of crazy that Harry almost died again within the span of five minutes. Thank you. um The effort to entrap Quirrell nearly killed him, um which is odd because it didn't take any magic, but maybe it was like sapping bits of his soul. I don't know. Interesting concept. Another form of
00:46:13
Speaker
Wizarding World magic that we'll never really understand, I guess. um The stone was destroyed, Dumbledore tells him, and that Nicholas, Famel, and his wife will die, but they have enough potion to set their affairs in order.
00:46:29
Speaker
Dumbledore confirms to Harry that Voldemort will try to return again. um Harry then says that he wants to ask Dumbledore more questions but you know being Dumbledore he gets a shady reply. Dumbledore says I shall answer your questions unless I have a very good reason not to in which case I beg you'll forgive me. Harry asks him um Well, Voldemort said that he only killed my mother because she tried to stop him from killing me, but why would he want to kill me in the first place? Dumbledore sighed very deeply this time. Alas, the first thing you ask me, I cannot tell you. Not today, not now. You will know one day.
00:47:14
Speaker
I feel like he could have told like I don't know why he has so much secrecy in him like you I mean I get it you don't want to tell him everything cuz it's just gonna freak him out you're gonna steal his childhood from him but you could tell him that Voldemort was threatened by his parents and when he went that night to kill his parents he thought he'd take out the whole family clan and he went after you like you don't have to tell him everything give him some bs reason
00:47:50
Speaker
Because your parents were a part of a Order of the Phoenix, which was out to destroy Voldemort and his, you know, legacy. Obviously, that's not the true reason why Voldemort was there that night, but you can give him some answer. You don't have to tell him every freaking thing, but you can give him something to go off. Like, come on. It just, it irks me. It really does.
00:48:14
Speaker
um especially because while I think Dumbledore's reasoning was to save Harry his childhood and keep him from you know spending the rest of his days trying to figure out how he can defeat Voldemort it robs him of his childhood whatever. That's not in fact true because we have in later books Harry training with Remus, Harry training with Mad Eye Moody,
00:48:39
Speaker
who isn't actually Mad Eye Moody, but he's training with these people to defeat these things because as much as they don't want Harry to be involved, the boy has a one-track mind. As soon as he discovers that Expecto Patronum can repel Death Eaters, by golly that's the very thing he sets out to learn. And in doing so, guess what maintains his childhood. Yeah.
00:49:04
Speaker
but still is training towards this big ending thing that he knows is coming. As much as you don't want him to know, like by golly, he freaking knows that it's coming. um And so I just feel like while Dumbledore is putting him through his paces to train
Dumbledore's Explanations
00:49:20
Speaker
him for the day that he does have to face Voldemort, you could have actually been training him for the day that he has to face Voldemort. Look at all the wasted potential of training that Dumbledore could have supplied. Because he does end up training him in Half-Blood Prince, but only for a limited time because then he, you know, kicks bucket takes the swan dive off the astronomy tower.
00:49:44
Speaker
And I feel like there was just so much wasted time that we could have spent with Harry learning more than the three spells that he uses. Yeah. Oh well. Wasted potential.
00:50:00
Speaker
um the next question that harry asks him is why couldn't world touch him um Dumbledore explains your mother died to save you to have been loved so deeply even though the person who loved us is gone will give us some protection forever it's in your very skin it was agony to touch a person marked by something so good which this is the main point that i wrote that harry potter paper around the power of love and sacrifice that the power of her sacrificing her life and loving harry so much in that moment gave him such a pureness that somebody who is that evil and that and doesn't know love yeah that um degraded would just melt at his touch is impeccable
00:50:57
Speaker
as far as world building goes. I just think it's crazy. He does ask where the cloak came from and Dumbledore reveals that it came from it was James it was James' cloak that he had went to Dumbledore and Dumbledore gave it to him. So basically Dumbledore confesses like, yeah, I've been i've been helping you all along, buddy. Even though you didn't know I was there, I was helping. I'm always watching. Yes. um He asks why um Professor Snape
00:51:28
Speaker
has such beef with him um and Dumbledore reveals that James and Severus did not get along in school and that the reason Severus did not like James for the most part was because he will never be able to get over the fact that James saved his life.
00:51:47
Speaker
which I think is incredible. um But in that Harry asks why Severus you know was protecting him in the school year if he hated his dad so much and he tells and Dumbledore does reveal that he thinks that maybe Snape thought by doing this he finally repaid that debt he owed to James years ago. Which you know you're not done paying that debt buddy.
00:52:12
Speaker
um He does ask how he got the stone in the end from the mirror. um And Dumbledore says, only one who wanted to find the stone, find it, but not use it, would be able to get it. Otherwise, they'd just see themselves making gold or drinking Elixir of Life. So, you know, by Harry thinking, I just need to get the stone so I can get it away from Voldemort. The mirror said, I got you. I'll help you out. Um, on...
00:52:43
Speaker
Dumbledore's way out of the hospital room, he does try one bean from Bertie Bott's Every Flavored Bean, thinking that he will have a nice toffee flavored one, only to say, alas, you're wax. I love that one. Just the Harry Potter, the very Potter, would you get broken computer?
00:53:03
Speaker
What'd you get? Defeat. Defeat. So funny. um After much arguing with Madame Pomfrey, Ron and Hermione get to pay a visit to Harry. He tells them everything that he discussed with Dumbledore and what happened down in the room with Quirrell. Ron questions Dumbledore's intentions. Thank you Ronald Weasley. And wonders why Dumbledore wouldn't have just, you know, actually taken care of it rather than
00:53:35
Speaker
helping three children take care of it um and Harry says thank you Harold as well I think he knows more or less everything that goes on here you know I reckon he had a pretty good idea we were going to try and instead of stopping us he just taught us enough to help I don't think it was an accident he let me find out how the mayor worked It's almost like he thought I had the right to face Voldemort if I could. No. You're incorrect, Harold. That's not why. He's raising you like a pig for slaughter, my friend. Go to bed. Stay out of it. I can't.
00:54:20
Speaker
It's so annoying. But I love that Harry just knows that like, yeah, you know, Dumbledore was like, they'll figure it out or they won't. Whatever. Harry, why are we just back passing that? Like, no. Like Ron said, Dumbledore should have like helped out a little bit. and Instead of just like, here's these little nuggets. I know you're gonna go looking on your own. I could help you fight him. And we could, you know, get out of this with a lot less injuries, but I'll just let you do it for me. Bro.
00:54:48
Speaker
o You are the most powerful wizard alive. You're the only one that Voldemort's scared of. And you're just gonna sit back and do nothing and let a literal 11 year old child and fight your battles for you? Bruh. It's so annoying. Especially for them to just destroy the stone in the end anyways. Like why couldn't have we just destroyed it to begin with?
00:55:10
Speaker
ah um Madam Pumphrey does come back and kick Ron and Hermione out. um It's the next day and Harry gets to go to the feast.
End of Term and Reflections
00:55:21
Speaker
um He leaves on his way down. He runs into Hagrid who wants to clear a guilty conscience because he feels like it's his fault since he told Quirrell how to get past Fluffy.
00:55:33
Speaker
It is your fault, Hagrid. It's a little bit your fault, my friend. I'm sorry. But you know who's really the lame? Albus Percival Wolfrick Brian Doublour. Thank you. um He gives Harry a photo album. He had sent off a bunch of letters to James and Lily's old friends to get some pictures of them for Harry, um which is really sweet.
00:55:55
Speaker
um they get down to the feast and the worst Dumbledore moment ever. Dumbledore announces the house cup standings um with Slytherin in first Ravenclaw in second Hufflepuff in third and Gryffindor in dead freaking last um but he decides hey I'm gonna sign some last minute points we love it um First to Mr. Ronald Weasley, for the best-played game of chess Hogwarts has seen in many years, I award Gryffindor House 50 points. Boo. Second to Ms. Hermione Granger, for the use of cool logic in the face of fire, I award Gryffindor House 50 points. Double boo.
00:56:44
Speaker
Third to Mr. Harry Potter, for Pure Nerve and Outstanding Courage, I award Gryffindor House 60 points. Triple boo. It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. I therefore award 10 points to Mr. Neville, long bottom, which puts Gryffindor in first. And the thing that aggravates me the most is not only is Gryffindor in first, but this puts Hufflepuff in dead freaking last. Please give us a break. Award us some extra points. Why don't you? Hello?
00:57:23
Speaker
It's so annoying. It's so annoying. um The flags all change over to Gryffindor flags from Slytherin flags um and they celebrate in peace. um It is the next week and they all have their exam results. They've all passed. Hermione of course excelled. Everyone is shocked that Neville made it through. Poor Neville!
00:57:51
Speaker
um They're packing up their things to go home. um They then get on the Hogwarts Express. They're all trading back and forth candies from the trolley and, you know, talking about their summer plans. ah They all change out of their Hogwarts robes and end to muggle clothing. um The train pulls into the station at King's Cross.
00:58:15
Speaker
Ron mentions he wants Harry to come stay for the summer just as they run into Molly and Jenny waiting for Ron on the platform. Uncle Vernon arrives and Harry has to say his goodbyes to Hermione and Ron, but before he goes he mentions how it's going to be a fun summer. They don't know he can't use magic outside of school. He's going to have some fun with Dudley this summer.
00:58:41
Speaker
and that is how we end Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling. That's a very James Potter attitude. Yes. I'm gonna have so much fun with Dudley this summer. I just...
00:58:54
Speaker
Oh, Harry. He does. I mean, it doesn't last very long because literally in Chamber of Secrets is when they find out that, oh, so you can't use magic outside of school when, you know, Aunt Marge gets blown up by a balloon and goes floating in the universe. But that concludes our discussion on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
Themes of Friendship and Bravery
00:59:21
Speaker
um chapter themes for these final chapters um my theme was friendship and bravery i know Hermione says that herself but by golly i'm stealing it because that is exactly what happens in those final chapters and i would go with that but i also put teamwork because teamwork makes the dream work what's gonna work teamwork um Okay so we didn't have any answers from last week's question um this week's question of the week would you have gone down to protect the stone um and would you have been able to stand up to the trio like Neville did um I don't think I would have gone down to protect the stone um I would have stood up to the trio because I would have been like dear god Harry
01:00:17
Speaker
Please go to bed. I'm sick of losing to Slytherin. Please go to bed. i I definitely wouldn't win down there. No, that's somebody else's job. I'm sorry. That's the helpful puff in me. I'm sorry.
01:00:33
Speaker
um I'll remain loyal to you to the very end, but I'm not doing it myself. I don't know if I would have gone down personally to protect the stone, but I think it would have been fun to come up with a trial. are like a trial to protect the stone. Yeah. I would have protected the stone from the sidelines. Yeah. Which, you know, that's, it's ironic because I'm a Gryffindor and you think, oh, I'd go down there head first. No. Nobody else did. Neville didn't.
01:00:59
Speaker
No. Dumbledore's a Gryffindor and he didn't go. So, to be fair. Um, and then as far as standing up to the trio, I probably would have said and be like, listen, Harry, if I would have known been like, listen, the whole goal for you, Harry, is to not die right now. Please, for our sanity, just go to bed.
01:01:23
Speaker
and try not to die yeah like bro quit throwing quit putting yourself at risk because if you do you're just gonna doom us all well that's kind of funny because i if walmart had gotten the stone in the end dumbledore would have been there to hit him off on his way out or snipe because where was snipe and Which maybe he had a plan to like catch him on his way out. Oh, yeah. But also, I mean, he would have just stayed in quarrels body. It wouldn't really I don't think I would have done that much for him. It doesn't give him power. It just gives him like, okay, I'm just not gonna die. Thanks. But here's the question. If was it the saying of like, if Voldemort dies, quarrel dies, or was it backwards?
01:02:15
Speaker
It was backwards because I mean if Kroll dies then Snape or then that Voldemort soul has no way of sustaining being alive because he was nearly dead when Kroll found him. Yeah. But that's not his only soul either. There's other pieces lying around. Bro. Oi. One's a walking one. One piece is just walking around.
01:02:45
Speaker
boy lol anyway um not really much of an update on the Hogwarts house poll this week um we do have a new Gryffindor has hit the scene and I think that's literally just you adding in your house yep I'm trying um we have three Hufflepuffs two Gryffindors one Ravenclaw and one Slytherin we will continue to have this poll up through the rest of the book discussions so please comment your house and that um pinned post on our instagram
01:03:15
Speaker
Okay, so the plan for next week, we are going to be doing our 2024 wrap up and 2025 book goals. Yeah, but goals reading goals. Yep.
01:03:29
Speaker
I think it's gonna be a fun one. Yeah that'll be our next bookish banter. We wanted to kind of give a break between before we get started on Chamber of Secrets um so we'll be doing a book tag for 2024 books so if you've been around for a while we've done a book tag before so it'll be like favorite book of 2024, favorite author, favorite character, least favorite book um book that made you cry, like something like that. There'll be a bunch of different categories to fill in um and then we'll be doing our goals for 2025, whether that's authors do you want to read, genres you want to read, series you want to read, um how many books you want to read that year, anything. um So we're going to be discussing that next week.
01:04:12
Speaker
But yeah, um be sure to follow the podcast and rate us five stars. Also be sure to follow us on our Instagram at Family Fiction Pod where we post our questions and as well as the Hogwarts House poll. So please go vote or put your house in the comment section. Yes. Yeah, I think that wraps up. um This was a great first read through for us. That was fun. Yes. Can't wait to do the rest of them.
01:04:39
Speaker
Yes. um Thanks so much for listening and we will see you guys next week. Bye!
