Character's Emotional Departure

00:00:00
Speaker
He says he needs to go speak to the driver, and I guess it's a theory, and I don't know, maybe it's revealed later, and I just don't remember it, but somebody said, like, he didn't actually go to speak to the driver. He left the compartment so quickly, and he, like, had to leave, and he went into another compartment and probably, like, cried because of how much Harry looks like James.
00:00:23
Speaker
Oh, I'm sure. and I was like... Oh no we can't talk about that. I cried reading the thing. I was like, well, this is depressing. Thank you. Whoever did this.

Introduction to Family Fiction Podcast

00:00:37
Speaker
What we've got to find is our perfect melody. So we'll open up a book to a story memory. A fantasy to hold on an expedition.
00:00:53
Speaker
This is Family Fiction and welcome back to family fiction with hallie and carmen the plan today is harry potter and the prisoner of ask band chapters four through six um if you've been with us this long that you know we've already read um harry part of the sorcer stone and harry partter the chamber of secret <unk> um so we are working on prisoner vab band and this is episode two of that um
00:01:24
Speaker
So the plan for the day is to discuss those three chapters. We do want to give a spoiler alert for anyone who has not read the books. um We will be discussing this book as well as things that happen later in the series.
00:01:37
Speaker
So if you haven't read them and you don't want to be spoiled, we suggest reading the books and then coming back and finding us later.

Book vs. Movie: Prisoner of Azkaban

00:01:44
Speaker
um Because there is definitely some foreshadowing moments.
00:01:48
Speaker
oh yeah these chapters they're fun these are some fun ones yeah i lots of lots of popular moments i'm actually really excited to be reading this one because i feel like the first one and the second one they're such like starting points that like chamber secrets is my least favorite of the series I get a little bored with Chamber Secrets. So I'm very excited to get into like the books that... like Especially because these books are like the most different from the movies.
00:02:20
Speaker
I feel like the first and second one followed the the movie like the movies, followed the books pretty well. yeah And then Prisoner Azkaban is where it really kicks off that like a lot of things we're going to discuss, if you've just watched the movies, you wouldn't even

Maturity of Harry Potter Series

00:02:33
Speaker
know existed. Yeah, I think when it comes to book-to-movie comparisons, I think...
00:02:39
Speaker
in my opinion i think this one is probably the most different book to movie adaptation wise um but this one is also i would say the movie and the book is probably one of my favorites um it's not my top favorite but it's in like my it's up in the ranking. Yeah.
00:03:01
Speaker
I, this one i do think is the most different from the movies. I would argue that the next most different is probably Order the Phoenix. Probably maybe Half-Blood Prince because I, Half-Blood Prince is my favorite book because there's so much left out of the movie with like the Marauders and everything and it's just, it's fun to And I think I saw someone talk about this, where they're talking about the Harry Potter books and the movies, especially.
00:03:29
Speaker
As you're going along, the books and the movies, they kind of, like, grow up with the

Current Reading Choices

00:03:35
Speaker
readers and the audience. You start out as, like, that child-like, that child-whimsical fantasy, and then when you kind of, as you go on, it goes into, like, deep, kind of mysterious fantasy. Yeah.
00:03:47
Speaker
Well, and just looking at the movies alone, like, they get darker. Like, visually, they get darker. Literally, the opening, the, like, opening title thing, it gets darker with each movie.
00:03:58
Speaker
Yeah. And it gets more rusted. Mm-hmm. So, it's a crazy thing. It's a nice little detail, too. Anyways, we'll start off with our currently reading. Hallie?
00:04:10
Speaker
So my current read is, haven't started it yet, but I'm hoping to tonight, is Quicksilver by Callie Hart. This is a very popular book among book talk, and so I'm real curious to get into it. It sounds interesting, so I'm kind of excited.
00:04:27
Speaker
Carmen? Mine right now is The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson. And I'm also simultaneously reading All the Young Dudes by MissKingbean89.
00:04:38
Speaker
um

Exploring Diagon Alley

00:04:40
Speaker
I'm trying just to read like a few chapters of All the Young Dudes at a time because it's like... a very, very, very, very long book.
00:04:50
Speaker
Book, story, whatever you want to call it. um And I know it's a story that I kind of already know, so I'm afraid I'd get bored with it if I just read it. So I'm trying to just read a couple chapters of it at a time and then switch over to The Kiss of Deception.
00:05:05
Speaker
um I've only just started The Kiss of Deception, but it's pretty good so far. I like the premise. She's a runaway princess and she was supposed to get married and now the prince that she was supposed to marry is searching for her and he like is pissed.
00:05:19
Speaker
So it's gonna be a good time. She also has an assassin after her. We love it. Love it. So, it's gonna be good. I'm excited. It's be like a prequel trilogy to Dance of Thieves.
00:05:31
Speaker
So, I'm excited.
00:05:35
Speaker
Alright. Without further ado, we will jump on into today's episode. Starting off with chapter 4, we have the Leaky Cauldron. It's been several days at the Leaky Cauldron. Here he is by himself.
00:05:48
Speaker
Um, he spends his time wandering Diagon Alley, and he does his homework at Florian Fortescue's ice cream parlor. Um, she keeps giving him sundaes, which, my dream.
00:06:01
Speaker
Which we have to point out, it's mentioned, like, Harry is living his best life. He has not had this much freedom In a long time. So he is, like, vibing.
00:06:11
Speaker
Yes. um He's trying to conserve his money the best he can because he knows he's got more years at Hogwarts to go. So he's trying not to spend all of his money.
00:06:22
Speaker
um But every day he visits the local Quidditch store to see the new Firebolt. which it stated the state-of-the-art racing brim sports a streamlined superfine handle of ash treated with a diamond hard polish and hand numbered with its own registration number each individually selected birch twig in the broom tail has been honed to aerodynamic perfection, giving the Firebolt unsurpassable balance and pinpoint precision.
00:06:53
Speaker
The Firebolt has an acceleration of 150 miles an hour in 10 seconds and incorporates an unbreakable breaking charm. Price on request. And Harry he is afraid to ask for the prize because he's afraid he'll be able to afford it and want to buy it.
00:07:09
Speaker
So he just doesn't ask. We love the responsibility of trying to conserve your money. Yeah. Because that would not be Nope. um He goes eventually to get his school books, knowing that school's in about a week.
00:07:24
Speaker
um Or two weeks. And he gets his new school books and a new robe while he's at it, since he's feeling a little short. The Weasleys could never.
00:07:35
Speaker
They cannot relate. Nope. um he sees a book about death omens when he goes to visit the bookstore um and the guy tells him not to get it because he tells him once you see a death omen in that book you're gonna see death omens everywhere you look there is deer in the field across the street oh wow there's a whole family one two three four five six that's probably seven here comes another one um They were in the field yesterday, too.
00:08:04
Speaker
But yeah, it's kind of funny that this is the first book he's- it's like the first book that immediately catches his attention because, you know, the boy's dodging death every time he turns

Tension Over Crookshanks

00:08:13
Speaker
around. He is a death omen. Literally. Quite literally.
00:08:19
Speaker
It's like Final Destination with this ski with this kid. That's what you get when you're a Horcrux. Yep. um When he went to request his school books, the shop owner was very worried that he needed a monster book of monsters since they were all in a cage and chomping at the bit.
00:08:35
Speaker
And when Harry told him he already got one, he was very relieved to not have to go in for that book. It's like the worst book to possibly have.
00:08:46
Speaker
And not to mention... while this is going on he eventually sees that there are two books proceeding to rip apart another book yes book of monsters um the shop owner complains about the books and he said he thought we'd seen the worst when we bought 200 copies of the invisible book of invisibility we cost a fortune and we never found them I think it's funny.
00:09:13
Speaker
I love those little, like, whimsical details. Yeah. um Harry does see Neville in Diagon Alley, but he does not go up to him because at the time that he sees Neville, Neville is being fussed at by his grandmother for losing something.
00:09:28
Speaker
Poor Neville. Yes. um Harry hoped that he that his grandmother never found out that he pretended to be Neville while on the run from the Ministry of Magic, knowing that would only make Neville's life worse.
00:09:42
Speaker
And yes, it would, Harry.

Weasley Family and Sirius Black

00:09:44
Speaker
Leave Neville alone. um one day while walking around diagonally he finds hermione and ron at florian fortescue's um they run up to him and they ask harry about his aunt because ron had heard about it since his dad works for the ministry ron thinks it's very funny and hermione scolds him ron knows all the gossip yes um harry learns that the weasleys and hermione are staying at the lakey cauldron and hermione has already bought a ton of school books and ron's wondering how the heck she's gonna read all of that in one school year and how could she possibly have that many courses foreshadowing we'll find out why later
00:10:32
Speaker
um She says she's got a little leftover money from her parents for her birthday, and she's decided that she wants an owl, um and Ron wants something for scabbers because he's been looking horrible lately.
00:10:47
Speaker
Foreshadowing! Um, so they decide to go off to the magical creature shop, um, and the lady at the store gives Ron a rat tonic and tells him that this rat should be dead because no rat lives that long and offers to get give him one of the magical rats that are doing flips.
00:11:09
Speaker
And Ron says no. Yes, rats shouldn't live that long, and that's because it's not a real rat. LOL. um A cat suddenly jumps out of nowhere and attacks Ron and Scabbers, and Scabbers runs out the door.
00:11:27
Speaker
um It's a big orange fluff ball, basically, of a cat. Oh, crookshanks. Um...
00:11:37
Speaker
Going back a little bit, Ron does mention that Scabbers was like that when Percy gave him to him. And the lady says, an ordinary common or garden rat like this can't be expected to live longer than three years or so.
00:11:50
Speaker
So just keep that in mind. um They, Ron and Harry go outside to find Scabbers cowering in a trash can.
00:12:01
Speaker
You

Arthur's Warning to Harry

00:12:02
Speaker
know what that he deserves? Leave him in the trash. um And when they look for Hermione, they think, well, she must be inside still purchasing her owl.
00:12:12
Speaker
Nope. She comes out holding the orange fluff ball. Ron yells at her for buying such a menace. And she says his name is Crookshanks. And he's been in the shop for years. Nobody wants him.
00:12:24
Speaker
And Ron's like, I wonder why. But see, would also, it's just so funny, if I had to go, like, get any sort of, like, magical creature, like an owl or something, or a cat or whatever, i would be the one that would buy a cat.
00:12:39
Speaker
I don't want an owl. I want a cat. Yes. But Rhonda's very upset she wanted that cat because there was other magical cats. But here's the thing. Orange cats are crazy.
00:12:50
Speaker
Trust me. I live with one. Yes. They are bipolar. yes Hermione says that Ron forgot his rat tonic inside, so she gives it to him.
00:13:03
Speaker
They return to the Leaky Cauldron after Hermione tells him, don't worry, he'll be in my dormitory, won't even be near you or your rat. When they return to the Leaky Cauldron, they find the rest of the Weasleys, Harry talks about Sirius Black with Arthur Weasley.
00:13:21
Speaker
Um... ah Fred and George greet Harry and mock Percy mercilessly over the fact that Percy comes up to him and says, Harry, how are you?
00:13:34
Speaker
And Harry responds, doing just fine. And then here comes Fred and George going, Harry, simply splendid to see you, old boy. Marvelous. Absolutely spiffing.
00:13:46
Speaker
I would also do this. See, this is a very relatable friend and George moment. Then they go up to Molly and say, Mom, how really quirky to see you. And she gets on to them and tells them that's enough.
00:13:58
Speaker
Um... When they're talking to Arthur about Sirius Black, um Mr. Weasley does say, like, you know, they've pulled us all off of our regular jobs at the ministry to try and find them. No luck so far.
00:14:13
Speaker
Ron asks if there would be a reward if they caught him. And Arthur says, Black's not going to be caught by a 13-year-old wizard. See, he knows. He's like, Ron...
00:14:25
Speaker
Shut up. just Shush. You've gotten in enough trouble as it is. You don't need to get in anymore. Yes.

Meeting Professor Lupin

00:14:34
Speaker
Molly is lecturing Fred and George about being a bad example on Jenny.
00:14:40
Speaker
And they do point out Jenny's got other brothers that can set her a perfect example. um ah And then Percy says the same thing and...
00:14:52
Speaker
he dad He's going up to change for dinner. And then George looks at Harry and says, we tried to shut him in a pyramid, but mom spotted us. um oh Yes.
00:15:06
Speaker
A little later, they all have dinner together. and arthur tells them that the ministry is providing cars to king's cross when they question why the ministry would be providing cars arthur kind of acts a little suspicious but he says because we've got so much stuff from y'all luggage we could never use one of our cars and we don't have the magical car anymore wonder why and um so the ministry is providing stuff to king's cross but that's not the real reason
00:15:37
Speaker
no Um, they all go to bed and to pack because Molly says they won't have time in the morning. um Harry, here, here's some stuff going on from Ron and Percy's room. He goes to scope it out and Percy's badge, his prefect's badge is missing. And so has Ron's rat taunted.
00:15:57
Speaker
um Percy accuses Ron of taking his badge and Ron's like, why the heck would I want your badge? um Harry thinks that the tonic might have been left on the dinner table. So he goes to get the tonic.
00:16:10
Speaker
And when he's downstairs, he overhears Molly and Arthur talking about Sirius Black. And he overhears them reveal that Sirius is looking for Harry. Um, Molly, they say, serious Black's mad, and maybe he is, but he was clever enough to escape from Azkaban, and that's supposed to be impossible.
00:16:30
Speaker
It's been a month, and no one's seen hide nor hair of him, and I don't care what Fudge keeps telling the Daily Prophet. prophet We're no near catching Black and then inventing self-spelling wands.
00:16:42
Speaker
The only thing we know for sure is what Black's after. But Harry will be perfectly safe at Hogwarts. We thought Azkaban was perfectly safe. If Black can break out of Azkaban, he can break into Hogwarts.
00:16:54
Speaker
But no one really is really sure that Black's after Harry. And then they hear a noise and they stop talking. um And then Molly says, or Arthur says, Molly, how many times do I have to tell you?
00:17:09
Speaker
They didn't report it in the press because Fudge wanted to it kept quiet. But Fudge went out to Azkaban the night Black escaped. The guards told Fudge that Black's been talking in his sleep for a while now.
00:17:21
Speaker
Always the same words. He's at Hogwarts. He's at Hogwarts. Black has deranged Molly, and he wants Harry dead. If you ask me, he thinks murdering Harry will bring you-know-who back to power.
00:17:33
Speaker
Black lost everything the night Harry stopped you-know-who, and he's had 12 years alone and Azkaban to breed on that. It's not wrong. Like, Sirius did lose everything, but it's not for that reason. It's not because he's evil.
00:17:47
Speaker
But they, I mean, they really set up in this scene, like, kind of the person that everyone thinks Sirius Black is. They think he's gone mad, which I think he did go a little bit crazy because Azkaban's known to drive people crazy because there's like the only thing you can feel while you're there is sadness and depression because the... The Dementors suck the joy out of you. Yes.
00:18:08
Speaker
um so harry overhearing this begins to freak out just a tad um and he overhears them talk about how the azkaban guards which are the ventures will be guarding hogwarts and that dumbledore isn't very happy about it wouldn't be either and then they decide they're gonna go up to um bet Um, so Harry tries to hide behind a passage and out of sight.

Dementor Encounter on the Train

00:18:39
Speaker
Um, he hears them leave, and it then he leaves and sees the bottle of rat tonic lying under the table they had sat at earlier. So he goes to get it, and when he turns around, Fred and George were crouching in the shadows on the landing, and they were heaving with laughter.
00:18:54
Speaker
um they heard... Percy dismantling his and Ron's room in search of the badge. So Harry finds him on his way back to the room. um And Fred reveals that they've got the badge and they've improved it to say instead of head boy, big head boy. Love him. We love Fred and George.
00:19:14
Speaker
um
00:19:17
Speaker
Harry pretends nothing happened and returns to his room after taking Ron the tonic. And that is how we end chapter four. So, I don't know. This is just a crazy setup to be like, Harry's once again got somebody looking out for him.
00:19:32
Speaker
And I think you could argue in that, like, serious saying he's at Hogwarts, he's at Hogwarts. I mean, an argument could be made, is he talking about Peter or is he talking about Harry? And he's like, he's at Hogwarts, I gotta get to him.
00:19:48
Speaker
But I think he is talking about Peter Pettigrew because he's like out for revenge on Peter. Yes. But, I mean, he might mean both. Peter's at Hogwarts, and so is Harry. I've got to get there and take care of Peter and save Harry.
00:20:03
Speaker
Yeah. I don't know. But I would also like to point out where it's like, he's safe at Hogwarts. I'm like, is he better than Me? And I'm like, is he really safe at Hogwarts Feels like every single one of these books, he's being attacked at Hogwarts.
00:20:18
Speaker
So I have a feeling that it's not that safe actually. Thank you. No, the other students would disagree. all right. Chapter five, the Dementor. It's the next morning and they all head to King's Cross Station.
00:20:32
Speaker
Um, Arthur wants them to go through the platform in pairs, saying it'll be easier, but in reality, we know all of this is to keep Harry safe. That's why they have the ministry cars. It's to keep Harry safe, and that's why they want to get there in pairs.
00:20:46
Speaker
So Arthur goes through with Harry. Um, and as Molly is helping the rest of the kids get their stuff on the train, Harry loads his stuff on the train and then Arthur pulls him to the side to tell him what's going on.
00:20:58
Speaker
Harry reveals that he did overhear them last night and Arthur starts telling him, you know, that black's mad and if he's after you like you just gotta stay safe like don't go looking for him and harry has the perfect line why would i go looking for someone i know wants to kill me well that harry is a question we ask every book but yet you still go looking for the person that wants to kill you
00:21:32
Speaker
You know, for being the main character, he's not very smart and constantly throws himself into these life or death, mainly death situations.
00:21:44
Speaker
And um like it's to the point where, like, you are a cat with nine lives because you would have been dead by the first book. ah just But you've got that main character plot armor that keeps you alive.
00:21:57
Speaker
I just love the question, why would I want to go looking for someone who wants to kill me? Well, why did you go down into looking for the Sorcerer's Stone? And to confront who who you thought was Snape.
00:22:10
Speaker
To confront him. Then in Chamber of Secrets, you went down into the chamber to confront that person. Buddy boy. You're... Your past mistakes are haunting you.
00:22:24
Speaker
Sorry, buddy. You'd think after one, you would learn, but no. Yes. Here we are. we have seven books and you still don't learn your lives. um Molly chastises Arthur saying Harry's going to miss the train.
00:22:38
Speaker
Harry quickly gets on the train. um Him and Hermione and Ron find compartment. um It's the only one they can find. Everywhere else is full. And they realize there's one person in there that's kind of half hidden under a coat, looks to be asleep.
00:22:52
Speaker
And that is Professor R.J. Lupin. ron question favorite ron questions how the heck do you know everything hermione and hermione goes it's on his suitcase so we have that moment um harry testing to see if he's asleep um decides that you know he can't hear them so harry tells hermione and ron about what arthur told him and everything that he ever heard um They seem very worried.

Understanding Dementors

00:23:19
Speaker
And Hermione states that he really, really needs to be careful and to not go looking for trouble. And this is one of my favorite Harry lines.
00:23:31
Speaker
I feel like it is kind of... like very relatable like this is one of the truest things he's ever said i don't go looking for trouble said harry nettled trouble usually finds me be fair it does it does honestly and again You're poor crook, so it's gonna find you.
00:23:51
Speaker
He aids it a little bit, because sometimes he does go looking for trouble, but it does also find him. Mm-hmm. So we can give him the benefit of the doubt there. Trouble always tends to come find him.
00:24:04
Speaker
i mean, let's just look at Goblet of Fire, for instance. Homeboy did not sign up for the Triwizard Tournament. No, he did not put his name in the Goblet of Fire. Somebody did it for Harry did not put his name in the Goblet of Fire.
00:24:16
Speaker
Dumbledore asked calmly. Which did not speak calmly at all. Did not. Whatever. um Obviously he is lying. i love her.
00:24:28
Speaker
Anyway. But yeah. Um. They seem very worried about it. And Ron and Hermione begin talking about their trips to Hogsmeade. Um. And all the things that they can go do. And Ron's excited about Zonko's joke shop. And all the um.
00:24:43
Speaker
Fun candy he's gonna get to get. Um.
00:24:49
Speaker
And he is very excited about it. Um, and Harry tells them and that he won't be able to go. Ron tries to convince him to sneak out. And Hermione chastises him about, like, Ron, what did we just talk about?
00:25:02
Speaker
Somebody's trying to kill Harry and you want him to sneak around. Ron's a bad influence sometimes. Like, yeah, just sneak out. Well, but then again, when you grow up with Fred and George Weasley, you tend to have those bad influence tendencies.
00:25:13
Speaker
So, yeah. Yes. Um... Ron also mentions Honeydukes, which we will come back to later because that's where Harry finds a secret passage.
00:25:26
Speaker
um And when Hermione starts talking about how Hogsmeade is a very interesting place, she starts talking about insights of historical sorcery. It says the inn was the headquarters for the 1612 Goblin Rebellion and the Shrieking Shacks supposed to be the most severely haunted building in Britain.
00:25:46
Speaker
Hmm. That's what people think anyways. And the reason for that is exactly in the book that I've been reading. All the young dudes. Hello. There's a reason. called a Shrieking Shack for a reason.
00:25:58
Speaker
Yes. people heard green Anyways. I'm a certain individual. Draco comes by and begins to, you know, talk his little trash that he always does. um Because he has nothing else better to do.
00:26:14
Speaker
And uses the nickname, look who it is, Potty and the Weasel. That's, you know, why was that not used? That sounds like a good, like, um, you know, they have those Harry Potter parody bands. Mm-hmm.
00:26:28
Speaker
Potty and the Weasel. Yeah. Would be so good. Why does that not come up in StarKid? Because that feels like a StarKid joke. Yeah. Um... He starts teasing Ron about getting some of the money that they got for the prize and asks if his mother died of shock.
00:26:45
Speaker
Um, and just then Professor Lupin gives a snort, kind of like waking up a little bit, and Malfoy asks, who's that? Harry says, new teacher, what were you saying, Malfoy?
00:26:57
Speaker
And Malfoy looks very panicked, looks at Kravengoyle and says, come on. So they leave. See? Um... Just then, the train begins to slow, and Ron says, we must be nearly there. it then, like, slows down even more, and Ron says, great, I'm starving. I want to get to the feast.
00:27:18
Speaker
Hermione says, we can't be there yet. And um they ask, so why are we stopping? The train gets slower and slower, and then eventually it just stops altogether.
00:27:30
Speaker
And all they can hear is the wind and rain outside. This is very creepy. This is a very creepy part of the book and the movie. um Harry gets up to look at the door um and sees heads sticking out curiously all along the compartments.
00:27:47
Speaker
And when the train does officially come to a complete stop, it comes to a stop with a jolt. And you hear people's luggage falling around in the overhead. Items may have shifted during flight.
00:27:58
Speaker
um And then all the lamps go out and they're plunged into total darkness. See, this is why i hate this i hate the Dementors because of this scene in the book and freaking castle ride when they get in your face. I'm like, now I understand why Harry was terrified. don't know. I saw a thing the other day that was like the castle ride and it said this is the worst part to be stuck at. They were stuck right at the part where like the spiders are coming out of the ceiling and they had spiders all around them and it's like kind of dark and they were stuck and I was like...
00:28:33
Speaker
No, I'd be crying. Absolutely not. I'd be crying. um In the dark, they're kind of bumbling around, and suddenly Neville and Jenny find their way into their compartment um and kind of stumble into each other.
00:28:48
Speaker
ah Just then, Professor Lupin has woken up, and he tells them all to be quiet. Harry can hear movements in like in Professor Lupin's corner, but none of them speak.
00:29:02
Speaker
And then we have, there was a soft crackling noise and a shivering light filled the compartment. Professor Lupin appeared to be holding a handful of flames. He illuminated his tired, gray face, but his eyes looked alert and wary.
00:29:17
Speaker
Stay where you are, he said, in the same hoarse voice, and he got slowly to his feet with his handful of fire held out in front of him. But the door slid slowly open before Lupin could reach it.
00:29:28
Speaker
This is so weird. Creepy. "'Standing in the doorway, illuminated by the shivering flames in Lupin's hand, was a cloaked figure that towered to the ceiling. Its face was completely hidden beneath its hood.
00:29:41
Speaker
Harry's eyes darted downward, and what he saw made his stomach contract.' "'There was a hand protruding from the cloak, and it was glistening, grayish, slimy-looking, and scabbed, like something dead that had decayed in water.
00:29:56
Speaker
But it was visible only for a split second, as though the creature beneath the cloak sensed Harry's gaze. The hand was suddenly withdrawn into the folds of its black cloak.' "'And then the thing beneath the hood, whatever it was, drew a long, slow, rattling breath as though it were trying to suck something more than air from its surrounding.
00:30:16
Speaker
"'An intense cold swept over them all. Harry felt his own breath catch in his chest. The cold went deeper than his skin. It was inside his chest. It was inside his very heart.' Harry's eyes rolled up into his head.
00:30:30
Speaker
He couldn't see. He was drowning in cold. There was a rushing in his ears as though of water. He was being dragged downward, the roaring growing louder. And then from far away, he heard screaming.
00:30:44
Speaker
Terrible, terrified, pleading screams. He wanted to help whoever it was. He tried to move his arms but couldn't. A thick white fog was swirling around him inside him.
00:30:56
Speaker
This is why I hate the Dementors. They're so creepy. Do we ever... i can't remember. Do we ever get an explanation as to what exactly they are? They're just like... They're like a soul of darkness, essentially. They're just kind of like a being. like I think... So... In a fellow... pi Fellow Friends podcast... um and I think they talked about it in Revelio...
00:31:27
Speaker
It was either Reveglio or Expecto Patronum. Either way, you guys should go listen to both of those podcasts. They're fantastic. One of them I was listening to they talked about Dementors and, like, they, it is, like, kind of in the Harry Potter lore that Dementors, like,
00:31:44
Speaker
They're just kind of like a ball of dark energy, essentially. And they're like dead souls. They're made up of dead souls. um And they're made up of, like, sadness and darkness. And they... i think the theory has been, like, they...
00:32:02
Speaker
they are like they come from like an egg of sorts so they're just kind of like created but nobody knows like the true origin like origin of a dementor like what specifically they are yeah i think they're just a negative entity ah yeah that's so that's a good way to put it yes um but yeah maybe that's what was in the for our school it sam mc goby was a dementor in the basement
00:32:29
Speaker
It was a demon something. That was crazy. I've watched more of those. We'll talk later. I've watched a bunch more. I've watched the Winchester Mystery House. Oh, that's a good one.
00:32:41
Speaker
Um, so. Anyways, back to topic. Yes, you guys should check out Expecto Patronum and Reveglio. I think they talked about it in Reveglio. I could be wrong. Anyways, go check out both of them. They're fantastic.
00:32:54
Speaker
Um, so, here he passes out, and when he wakes up, um, everyone's around him asking him if he was okay. Um, he realizes somebody was slapping his face, which is kind of crazy.
00:33:06
Speaker
Um, and he, when he comes to, he realizes that the Hogwarts Express is moving again, and the lights have come back on. Um, he's laying on the floor of the compartment, and sees everyone watching him, including Professor Lupin.
00:33:20
Speaker
Um, he feels a cold sweat on his face, and her ro and Hermione help him back into his seat. Um, they ask him if he's okay, and he's like, yeah, I'm fine. Like, are you guys okay? And they're like, yeah.
00:33:33
Speaker
And he goes, who is screaming? And they're like, Nobody was screaming, Harry. And so then he realizes that nobody else passed out, just him.
00:33:44
Speaker
And he can't figure out where the screams were coming from. Lupin gives him some chocolate and tells him it'll help him feel better, which becomes like a very running joke in the Harry Potter universe.
00:33:55
Speaker
There's so many memes about, like, Lupin saying... eat chocolate it'll make you feel better i actually saw one yesterday that's from like the end of goblet of fire and it's what's his face saying my son and it then it says remus here eat this it'll help you feel better and dumbledore goes not now remus think it's funny so it becomes a very running joke in the harry potter universe um harry asks what it was that a was in the compartment and lupin says it was a dementor one of the dementors from azkaban
00:34:28
Speaker
He then insists again that Harry eat the chocolate and says, I need to speak to the driver. Excuse me. So this is something I saw the other day and I think I sent it to you. It literally made me cry.
00:34:40
Speaker
So he says he needs to go speak to the driver and I guess it's a theory and I don't know, maybe it's revealed later and I just don't remember it, but somebody said like he didn't actually go to speak to the driver He left the compartment so quickly and he like had to leave and he went into another compartment and probably like cried because of how much Harry looks like James.
00:35:04
Speaker
Oh, I'm sure. and I was like, oh no we can't talk about that. I cried reading the thing. I was like, well, this is depressing. Thank you. Whoever did this.
00:35:17
Speaker
yeah. Yeah, because, like, he's reminiscing over his time at Hogwarts, and Harry looks just like James. Mm-hmm. And they all tell him that he looks just like James.

Arriving at Hogwarts

00:35:29
Speaker
I'm sure everybody who, like, come into contact with him, like, especially all, like, the professors and, like, the... They were probably like, oh. I don't know. feel like it's gonna get said in this book, and it's just been so long, I don't remember.
00:35:40
Speaker
But, like, where did Remus go? Like, we know what happened to Sirius. Yeah. you know what happened to Peter. And we know what happened to James. But where did Remus go? ah Probably... My guess would be... I've always seen Remus on in, like... Especially when you have, like, the canon and, like...
00:35:56
Speaker
the fan stuff remus is always they've always seen him as like a very kind of like sensitive person especially you know considering his circumstances um and so i kind of think of when all this stuff went down with james and lily being killed and with sirius I feel like he kind of just, like, shut himself away.
00:36:17
Speaker
would make sense. And, like, would just grieve. Yeah. Well, because we know later with everything with Tonks, he very much becomes a martyr. Mm-hmm. With Tonks. And, like, when she gets pregnant, he feels so guilty. He comes to Harry and he's in, like, just a really bad way.
00:36:35
Speaker
So I think he does just kind of go inside of himself a little bit. Yeah. And... um've Yeah, I've always... That's what I always assumed is when all that stuff went down.
00:36:47
Speaker
And... Because I'm pretty sure he assumed that Peter probably died too. Yeah. And so he's like... i He was probably at the point where he's like I've literally lost everybody. so but he himself does think because when they say later...
00:37:03
Speaker
that they think that like one of the people that Sirius killed that night is Peter. All that's left was a finger. Mm-hmm. So he thinks everybody's dead. Sirius is an ass man.
00:37:14
Speaker
because even in the movie, well, it probably is in the book too when they're all in the shrieking shack and Harry was like, well, he killed Peter Pettigrew. He thought he was dead and Remus is like, so did i I thought he was dead. So yeah, that makes sense. Yeah.
00:37:30
Speaker
They all thought he was dead. Wow, look at that. detective work well yeah he he had to have gone inside of himself a little bit he does become a bit of a martyr and i'm interested to see and you know i said i don't know if that's a theory that somebody came up with about him leaving the compartment i did mention like all the young dudes i think takes to place a little bit after like they graduate and everything so maybe it's in all the young dudes that they say like he left the compartment interesting sad day poor remus um
00:38:03
Speaker
Anyways, Remus leaves and um they're all asking Harry if, you know, if he's okay. um And they're all talking about how they thought Harry, Ron says, I thought you were having a fit or something.
00:38:16
Speaker
Ron is just never going to be the one to be like, are you okay i was really worried about you he's gonna he's just stupid he's riding around on the floor right he's the styles of the group he just doesn't he's not the he's not the most sensitive person he's not very sensitive he's not consoling doesn't really know how to read the room funny um they're all talking about how it got really cold when the thing came in and how they felt like all the happiness sucked away ron says he felt like he would never be cheerful again so we're very much getting like a consensus of like what what happens from a dementor mm-hmm
00:38:54
Speaker
um Harry's asking if any of them passed out and they're all like, nope, we're good. um Lupin comes back and says we'll be at Hogwarts in 10 minutes and asks Harry if he's alright.
00:39:06
Speaker
And Harry he didn't ask Professor Lupin how he knew his name. Because you look just like your father and they were best friends. Oh, and I'm sure that whenever all this went down with the Dementors, another reason, like he's probably thinking, oh gosh, don't tell me I just met this kid and now he's dead. They were besties for the resties.
00:39:25
Speaker
wait You know, Lupin's having a really hard time right now. He thinks that Peter's dead, which is one of his friends. James is dead, so he's still grieving that loss.
00:39:36
Speaker
His other friend, his best friend, is literally on the run from Azkaban. He thinks that friend, well, I don't think he thinks Sirius killed anybody because we kind of figure out that he's been coming to Sirius' aid.
00:39:49
Speaker
So, never mind. He's got a friend that's on the run from Azkaban. He's got all these Dementors out to find him. He just met Harry, who looks just like James. He's having a rough time.
00:40:01
Speaker
He's like, hey Mitch. It's all feeling fresh. he's all He's like, hey Mitch. We don't need to talk about this. I'll start crying. Okay. um So... um Harry says he's fine and he's a little embarrassed by everything that happened since he was the only one that passed out. but row um When they exit the train, they hear a familiar voice saying, first you is this way.

Dementors Guard Hogwarts

00:40:24
Speaker
They look over and see Hagrid.
00:40:26
Speaker
Hagrid asks if they're doing okay and they say yep. um They follow the rest the school along the platform platform and onto like a muddy track where...
00:40:38
Speaker
This is a little foreshadowing for Order of the Phoenix. um Where at least a hundred stagecoaches awaited the remaining students. Each pulled, Harry could only assume, by an invisible horse.
00:40:52
Speaker
Because when they climbed inside and shut the door, the coach set off all by itself, bumping and swaying in procession. And we learn Order of the Phoenix that that is a festral. I love the Thestrals.
00:41:04
Speaker
They're so cute. They're so interesting. They're so cute. As the carriage goes along, um they finally arrive at Hogwarts and they hear good old Draco Malfoy.
00:41:23
Speaker
You fainted. I mean, you actually fainted. Is it true you fainted? mean, you actually fainted. um He's giving Potty, old Potty, a crap time, telling him, like, is Longbottom telling the truth? but Neville, what are what do you doing?
00:41:41
Speaker
Why are you telling people, Neville, your mouth shut. Um... And then Harry, like, they gotta get into, like, their little argument.
00:41:55
Speaker
Ron tells him to shove off, and then he says, did you faint as well, Weasley? um And he's like, really just giving them a hard time. Well, then here comes Professor Lupin to the rescue and says, is there a problem?
00:42:10
Speaker
Malfoy gave Professor Lupin an insolent stare, which took in the patches of his robes and the dilapidated suitcase. With a tiny hint of sarcasm in his voice, he said, Oh no, Professor.
00:42:23
Speaker
Then he smirked at Crabbe and Goyle and led them up to the steps of the castle. Poor Remus. Leave him alone. He's just a poor little orphan boy. boy.
00:42:33
Speaker
He's just a baby. He's just baby. They go into the Great Hall and McGonagall is there and wants Hermione and Harry to come with her. Ron seems a little bit nervous for them um and goes on to the feast.
00:42:49
Speaker
McGonagall takes Harry into her office first, asks him if he's okay. um She said Professor Lupin had sent an owl ahead and said that he had taken ill on the train. um she tells him he's fine and then madame pomfrey comes in and mcgonagall tells her that it was a dementor which madame pomfrey is very funny in this and she goes oh it's you is it i suppose you've been doing something dangerous again she's even she knows she's like i have to patch this boy up 5 000 times every year she's like if i got paid
00:43:27
Speaker
Like, a lot of money for how many times I had to patch up Harry. She's like, I could have been rich, and she could have retired. Like, my goodness. He's constantly in that infirmary. For something.
00:43:39
Speaker
Oh, McGonagall tells her that it was a Dementor and Madame Pomfrey explains her upset that setting Dementors around a school, he won't be the last one who collapsed collapses.
00:43:52
Speaker
Yes, he's all clammy. Terrible things they are and the fact they have on people who are already delicate. Here he yells, I'm not delicate. He really isn't. And Madame Pomfrey goes, of course you're not um McGonagall asks what he needs and she tells him, or Harry says that he's fine.
00:44:15
Speaker
And she just says, well, he should have some chocolate. And she says, or ah Harry says, I've already had some. Professor Lupin gave it to me. And Madame Pomfrey is like, finally a defense against the dark arts professor that knows what he's doing.
00:44:29
Speaker
Yep. Will not long last. Okay. Damn. Well. Um. Stupid curse on that position. Harry insists that he's okay and McGonagall says, very well, kindly wait outside while I have a quick word with Miss Granger about her course schedule.
00:44:45
Speaker
Then we can go down to the face together. Um. He goes out and sends Hermione in. Um. and we kind of just have like a fresh explanation of what's happening with the sorting downstairs right now.
00:44:58
Speaker
Um, when him and Hermione go downstairs for the feast, they sit on either side of Ron and Ron's asking him what's going on. And he kind of, you know, explains what happened. Um, and then professor Dumbledore gets up to give his yearly speech.
00:45:13
Speaker
And we have a description line that says you couldn't help trusting Albus Dumbledore. feel like you can't help it no You can't, in fact, help him. He cannot be trusted. I literally, when I read that line, I quite literally rolled my eyes because I was like, no, you cannot trust this man. This man has too many secrets.
00:45:34
Speaker
Yes. um Dumbledore announces that they will be having some Dementors from Azkaban posted on the outskirts of the school um doing some Ministry of Magic business and says, you know, they're stationed at every entrance on the grounds. Um...
00:45:50
Speaker
Nobody is to leave school without permissions. Dementors are not to be fooled by tricks or disguises or even invisibility cloaks. Harry and Ron glanced at each other.
00:46:02
Speaker
it is not in the nature of a dementor to understand pleading or excuses. I therefore warn each and every one of you to give them no reason to harm you. I look to the prefects and our new head boy and girl to make sure that no student runs afoul of the dementors.
00:46:17
Speaker
Percy sits up straighter. On Percy. Um, he does announce that they are welcoming a new Defense Against the Dark arts teacher, which is Professor Lupin.
00:46:29
Speaker
Um, and then he says that Professor Grubly Plank has decided to go into early retirement to spend, uh, their remaining time with their remaining limbs. Love that.
00:46:41
Speaker
Um, and, and announces that Rubius Hagrid will be the new magical creatures, uh, care of magical creatures teacher.

First Classes and Predictions

00:46:51
Speaker
Um, and then, you know, the feast happens. They have plates pop up all around with multiple foods. Um, and then they, the trio heads up to the professor table to congratulate Hagrid.
00:47:06
Speaker
Hagrid mentions that he is a little nervous, but he's glad he's going to have his three, those three in his class. Um, They all leave and head off to the new, to the Gryffindor common room, and Percy announces that the new password is Fortuna Major, and Neville is very nervous about the fact that now he has to learn a another new password, which this isn't foreshadowing, because this is how Sirius Black gets in later, is because of Neville.
00:47:34
Speaker
as he's writing down the passwords. um They step through the portrait hole to the common room. And Harry looks around and feels like he's finally home.
00:47:46
Speaker
Which is sweet. And that ends chapter five. right. Chapter six. Talons and tea leaves. And we meet one of my favorite characters in this chapter.
00:47:58
Speaker
Love her. um They're all sitting down for breakfast and Pansy Parkinson and the rest of Draco's gang stop by and mock Harry for passing out and they're all pretending to be Dementors.
00:48:13
Speaker
um Fred and George start talking about the Dementors and mentioning that, you know, Malfoy wasn't so... upskippity with himself when he crashed into Fred and George's compartment and nearly wet himself in the process um and he was literally freaking out so they're trying to make Harry feel better about it um and they're telling Harry to forget it and that when their dad has to go out to Azkaban he always says like it's the worst place he's ever been and he comes back all weak and shaking most of the prisoners go mad there because they suck the happiness out of everywhere
00:48:55
Speaker
Um, they mentioned Quidditch coming up in the first matches against Slytherin. So they tell Harry to cheer up. We'll get him back in the match. Um, and then they all get their new schedules for this term and Hermione states, Oh good. We're starting some new subjects today.
00:49:15
Speaker
Ron looks over and sees her class schedule and says, you can't possibly do all of those classes. There isn't enough time.
00:49:25
Speaker
foreshadowing yes um and then they hermione tells him don't be silly of course i won't have three classes at once um and then kind of changes the subject um and then after they've done eat after they are done eating they head off to divination no Hagrid comes by the table and tells him that, you know, you're in my first lesson right after lunch.
00:49:54
Speaker
Been up since five, getting everything ready. Hope it's okay. Me, a teacher, honestly. Ron says nervously, wonder what he's been getting ready. um Hermione says we better go to Divination and it's at the top of North Tower. It'll take us 10 minutes to get there.
00:50:12
Speaker
They finish breakfast and say goodbye to Fred and George and head off to Divination. um On the way there, they get very lost and they run into a portrait of Sir Cadigan, who then, you know, is very like a proud soldier in one of the portraits um on foot then good sirs and gentle lady on on and he takes them on to the divination where the north tower is seeing it as a quest i like sir cadigan he's kind of funny um when they get there they note that it says you know this is where the divination classroom is something drops out of the attic and it's a ladder they all climb it up into the attic
00:50:51
Speaker
and is a round classroom with tables set up and it's very mystical looking classroom um such a fun classroom and they have entered divination um they learned that the teacher is sybil trelawny one of my favorite characters love her um once they've all taken their seats they see that there is a bunch of crystal balls and bunch of teacups and playing cards and candles and feathers all around the room.
00:51:24
Speaker
Um, they suddenly hear a voice come out of the shadows and she says, welcome. How nice to see you in the physical world at last. I love Trelawney.
00:51:35
Speaker
Um, she's telling him, you know, like, welcome to divination. I'm professor Trelawney. um You may have not seen me before. i find that descending too often in the hustle and bustle of the main school clouds my inner eye.
00:51:50
Speaker
I love her. She starts to make some predictions for people in the classroom, which gets very funny. um She looks over at Neville and says, you boy, is your grandmother well?
00:52:03
Speaker
And he says, I think so. She says, I wouldn't be so sure if I were you, dear. but Way to freak him out even more. Um, and then suspect a little bit of some foreshadowing in this next thing.
00:52:20
Speaker
She looks at Pravarty Patel and says, um, by the way, my dear, beware a red-headed, a red-haired man. And I think this might have been Rowling's, like, ode to what's gonna happen in the next book, which is the Yule Ball, because I think Pravarty goes with Ron,
00:52:42
Speaker
Yes. And he's basically, like, the crappiest date. Well, because there's Pavardy and Padma Patil, and I think Padma goes with Harry, and Pavardy goes with Ron. Um... And Ron basically is the worst date ever. She gets very upset that he won't dance with her and all this stuff, and so I'm almost thinking, like, is this... Like, foreshadowing to that?
00:53:05
Speaker
I think that's gonna be... So technically, if it is, she was right. Um...
00:53:12
Speaker
Pervari gives a startled look at Ron, who is right behind her, and edges her chair away from him. This is such a funny classroom. I love this so much.
00:53:23
Speaker
She tells them that they're going to learn about the crystal ball, and around Easter, one of our number number will leave us forever. Which is technically true. It's Peter Pettigrew.
00:53:34
Speaker
yeah But it's just kind of funny to be like, this semester we're going to learn about this, this, and this. And at the end of the term, one of our number will leave us forever. And the students are just like, okay.
00:53:48
Speaker
um She looks at Lavender Brown and says, I wonder if you could pass me the largest silver teapot. And she says, she hands it to her and she says, thank you, my dear. Incidentally, the thing you are dreading, it will happen on Friday the 16th of October.
00:54:03
Speaker
Which I don't know what that is. Like we find out later what that one is. um Everyone gets a teacup and she tells them that they're going to be trying to read each other's tea leaves. um They pull out their Unfogging the Future textbook, and Harry and Ron have to read each other's.
00:54:20
Speaker
Oh, no. And he tells Harry... um You've got a crooked sword of cross. That means you're going to have trials and... Or no, this is... no, this is Harry.
00:54:35
Speaker
In the movie was swapped. um Harry reads Ron's and says, Right. You've got a crooked sword of cross. That means you're going to have trials and suffering. Sorry about that.
00:54:47
Speaker
But there's a thing that could be the sun. Hang on. That means great happiness. So you're going to suffer, but be very happy.
00:54:58
Speaker
Technically, little bit true. um Ron says, you need your inner eye tested if you ask me. And Ron picks up Harry's cup and says, there's a blob a bit like a bowler hat.
00:55:11
Speaker
Maybe you're going to work for the Ministry of Magic. But this way, it looks more like an acorn. Um... A windfall. Unexpected. Excellent. You can lend me some. And there's a thing here. Yeah.
00:55:25
Speaker
If that was its head, it looks like a hippo. No, a sheep. Professor Trelawney comes over, seeing them struggling, and says, let me see that, my dear. She picks up Harry's cup, and every everyone goes quiet to watch.
00:55:37
Speaker
Professor Trelawney is staring into the teacup, rotating it counterclockwise. The falcon, my dear. You have a deadly enemy. Hermione says, but everyone knows that. Tomorrow.
00:55:50
Speaker
um This is like the beginnings of Hermione and Trelawney having like arch nemesis vibes because this gets very crazy. um She tells Harry that this is not a happy cup that he has.
00:56:04
Speaker
um

Hagrid's Class and Draco's Antics

00:56:06
Speaker
And then she realizes Neville has smashed a cup. Whenever they went to get their teacups, she tells Neville to grab a second one because he'll break the first one.
00:56:15
Speaker
He does in fact break the first one and now he's broken the second one. Bless her heart. um she looks at harry and says you have the grim and in the book or in the movie we get this very incredible one-liner from good old blim who says um the grandma's a very dark creature and it's known to be an omen of death He's just like given this incredible one-liner.
00:56:43
Speaker
um She says, it's the giant spectral dog that haunts churchyard churchyards. My dear boy, it is an omen, the worst omen of death.
00:56:55
Speaker
Harry feels his stomach lurch and he gets very nervous. And Hermione says, I don't think it looks like a Grimm. And then Professor Trelawney says, you forgive me for saying so, my dear, but I perceive very little aura around you.
00:57:08
Speaker
Very little receptivity to the resonances of the future.
00:57:14
Speaker
Um, Seamus kind of does like a, like, it looks like this. It looks like a grim if you did this, but it more like, said but looks more like a donkey from here. So they're all trying to help Harry feel much better about his death omen.
00:57:29
Speaker
Um, and utterly fell. As they're leaving Divination, they head off to Professor McGonagall's Transfiguration class, and she notices that everyone's kind of in sulky mood, so she asks what's going on, um and she they tell her, and she says that Professor Trelawney predicts somebody's death every year, and it's never true.
00:57:52
Speaker
So it's just a way for her to get everyone into the class. Ella will. um She does tell Harry, I assure you that if you die, you need not hand in any homework.
00:58:05
Speaker
um
00:58:09
Speaker
They then head off to care of magical creatures and Hermione mentions her... um arithmancy class, which Ron's like, how could you have been to arithmancy class? We've been in two classes today, and you've been with us both times.
00:58:28
Speaker
And she's like, of course I have, Ron. She gaslights him this whole book. It's so funny. um They get to care of magical creatures and realize that they have it with Slytherin. Boo. Ugh.
00:58:41
Speaker
um And this is after lunch. ah When they get their... Hagrid leads them out into the forest and shows them that they will be working with hippogriffs.
00:58:55
Speaker
um As they're walking towards the hippogriffs, they ask how in the world they're supposed to open their books. And Hagrid says, very matter-of-factly, you're supposed to stroke the spine, of course.
00:59:08

Stroke the spine, of course? And then we have the line that is in the movie of Hermione saying, I thought they were funny. Oh, tremendously funny. Real witty. god this place is cool to the dogs luckily next year i'll be transferred to big thoughts um yes malfoy's very upset in the movie by the way that's just in starken um malfoy's very upset about being in a class with hagrid um hagrid shows them the hippogriffs and says that they're very proud creatures

You have to go up to them, bow, and if they bow back, you can pet them. But you have to be very, very quiet, and you have to be very confident. You can't shriek away.
00:59:54
Speaker
you have to show a little brute force. um Harry steps forward because nobody else will volunteer, when he goes up, he is successful with Buckbeak!
01:00:05
Speaker
One of the... um Hippogriffs. And much to Harry's dismay, Hagrid goes, great, now you can ride him. And Harry gets up on Hippogriff and takes a flight around the castle.
01:00:18
Speaker
And in the book, it's a very short-lived scene for it to be such an iconic scene in the movie. It's kind of crazy. So we have Buckbeak's flight. And then when Harry comes back, everyone has a little bit more confidence and they decide they're all going to try their hand with the hippogriffs.
01:00:37
Speaker
And most people are successful. Neville... Not so much. He kind of freaks out a little bit. um Draco is successful with one, much to Harry's dismay.
01:00:49
Speaker
But then he says that they're dumb creatures and anybody could do it. Look at this thing. And then after literally Hagrid said, don't threaten a hippogriff. It'll be the last thing you do.
01:01:03
Speaker
Draco does just that. And then it attacks Draco.
01:01:09
Speaker
Deservedly so. um And Draco is on the ground saying, I'm dying. It's killed me. um And then Hagrid scoops Draco up and takes him to Madame Pomfrey.
01:01:24
Speaker
um Hermione wonders if... Draco will be alright, and Harry says, course he will. Madame Pomfrey can mend cuts in about a second, remembering the fact that she regrew his entire arm last year.
01:01:37
Speaker
um They're worried about Hagrid being fired, and... are hoping that they you know wouldn't fire him uh not because of draco but they worry about what draco's dad might you know throw a fit um the ultimate karen yes as they are finishing up supper they see that hagrid's window light is on so they decide to go down and see him before it's time for curfew and when they go down hagrid is very drunk And is talking about how he's it's all his fault.
01:02:11
Speaker
He's afraid it's gonna he's going to get fired. All this stuff. Hermione basically tells him to snap out of it. He goes outside and dunks his whole head in a trough of water.
01:02:23
Speaker
And sobers himself up. When he comes back inside, he kind of realizes what's going on. And yells at the three of them for being out of the castle. Especially Harry. He should know better.
01:02:34
Speaker
You should know better. Because Hagrid also knows about Sirius Black. um And then he yells at Hermione and Ron for letting him be around after dark. And then he says, come on, I'm taking y'all back up to the school and don't let me catch you walking down to see me after dark again.
01:02:50
Speaker
I'm not worth that. And that is how we end chapter six. know Lots of stuff. Lots of setup. Mm-hmm. Lots of sad information.
01:03:04
Speaker
Yes. Lots of setup, I think, for the rest of this book. um We do have some new characters. um I kind of wanted to change this segment up a little bit instead of first impressions of characters like just some new characters to mention because not all of them need impressions.
01:03:21
Speaker
um We do have Remus Lupin, who we don't have, like, a great impression of so far because just we don't know much about him. We know he's very smart about his job. Yep. um And he seems cool.
01:03:34
Speaker
And he has kind of protected Harry from Draco twice now. But I think in the next chapters we get a class with him. So so we'll get to we get to learn a lot more about Remus as the time goes on. And I wish...
01:03:47
Speaker
i wish he kind of stuck around a little bit more and i know it's so depressing i wish he kind of one good professor they had i know honestly if the defense against the dark arts curse like never existed and remus still would have stayed as a professor i think i would have loved to have seen him stick around a little bit more and see that relationship with harry grow yes especially because he could have taught harry more spells i feel like harry quit learning spells after remus left once he learned expecto patronum that was it no other spell mattered We also have Buckbeak.
01:04:19
Speaker
The diva. The icon. Iconic. Professor Trelawney. love her so much. She's so quirky and I love it. And she's very passive-aggressively funny. Yep.
01:04:31
Speaker
Because she, like, hates Hermione and Hermione hates her and it just gets so funny. um I also, like, if that was my job, I would also be, like,
01:04:42
Speaker
Sorry, but that thing you've been dreading, it's going to happen. All right, moving on. Like, she's so point blank about it and then just moves on with her life afterwards. It's hilarious. um And then we have Sir Cat again. He does come back a few times um in the book.
01:04:58
Speaker
It's a fun little character to add, like, of a portrait character. um Because really the only one we've had interaction with so far is they the fat lady. Mm-hmm.
01:05:09
Speaker
So... Um, alright. Okay, so moving on to our question of the week. So, is Hagrid being a teacher ah good idea?
01:05:22
Speaker
i think Hagrid is very smart about the subject they've put him in. And I think if we didn't have students like Draco, he could have been a great teacher and I think he could have kept doing it.
01:05:35
Speaker
Yeah, I think... Like, you if it weren't for Draco, he would have been a good teacher. And they put him in the right subject, and that he's very passionate about with, like, magical creatures and stuff. That's, like, the perfect teaching job for him, if you're gonna give him a teacher position. I just think Draco ruined it.
01:05:54
Speaker
Like, he always does. Well, because, just think about how many creatures they could have learned about that they now can't because... Now there's like a safety precaution involved. Like they maybe could have done a lesson on Thestrals.
01:06:07
Speaker
And the Hippogriffs was a cool... Like I feel like he's a little bit more like he's a reckless Newt Scamander. Because Newt was very passionate about magical creatures and kept a lot of them as pets in his little suitcase.
01:06:19
Speaker
And... Had a whole zoo. Hagrid would have done the same thing. I just think that they... He didn't have the support that was needed. um But Dumbledore does really fight for him, so that's a good thing. But then they kind of end up, you know they learn about the blast and it's great for forever because they've got to keep it safe for the students and it becomes a whole thing.
01:06:40
Speaker
But I think he he could have taught them a lot. Oh, yeah. I don't think it would have been in the safest way.

Podcast Conclusion

01:06:47
Speaker
Sometimes he can be a little reckless, but I think they would have learned a lot.
01:06:52
Speaker
Yeah. So, the Hufflepuffs would have enjoyed it thoroughly. Just saying. Yeah.
01:06:59
Speaker
Okay. And... We have a small update. Oh.
