And Harry begins to look into the distance at this what he saw across the street. Stan peers around. What you looking at? I just love her. What you doing down there?
00:00:37

Fell over. What you fell over for? I didn't do it on purpose.

Podcast Begins: Focus on Harry Potter

00:00:51
Speaker
What we've got to find is our perfect melody So we'll open up book to a story memory A fantasy to hold on an expedition Won't you step into our world, this is family fiction
00:01:12
Speaker
Hello everyone and welcome back to Family Fiction with Halle and Carmen. So the plan for today is chapters 1 through 3 of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Spoiler Alert and Reading Suggestions

00:01:25
Speaker
Before we get started on today's discussion we do want to go ahead and give a spoiler alert for this book as well as other books in the series. um Because we'll be talking about some foreshadowing moments and just stuff that's going to happen later in other books.
00:01:39
Speaker
So if you haven't read um all of the Harry Potter books and you would like to not be spoiled, then we suggest you go read them and then come back to these episodes.

Current Reads Discussion

00:01:49
Speaker
Because I know they're old books, but you'd be surprised at how many people have no idea about half the things that happened that I would think would be common knowledge by now.
00:01:59
Speaker
Yep. Um, but before we do that, we're going to go into our currently reading, Hallie. So I'm currently listening to The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager.
00:02:11
Speaker
Um, I finished it two hours ago. You did? And it was amazing. But yeah, it's very good so far. I'm intrigued. I think you'll really like it because I don't know how much you know about the book.
00:02:24
Speaker
I knew nothing and there was some stuff that I was really like, what's going on i had to send a couple text messages to emily because emily's already read it i think you'll really like it yeah it was very good i can't wait to read his other books um my currently reading like i said i just finished the house across the lake like two hours ago so i'm going to start rule by jay crown over so this was the movie with chase stokes where the marked men oh I watched the movie finally. And so, and it was pretty good. i It was like the after movies where I could tell like, okay, if you read the book, you'd have a little bit more information because it moved kind of fast paced in the movie.
00:03:07
Speaker
So, and that's how after was. um When I had watched the movie, I was like, if I hadn't read the book, I'd be a little bit confused. So I'm going to read the books because I'm hoping and manifesting that they're going to make more so we can eventually get Alexander Ludwig's movie come on everyone i need my man's movie looks so good in that movie.
00:03:31
Speaker
But yes, I'm excited to read this. ah The movie was cute, so I'm interested to see what was left out.

Book of the Month Reveal

00:03:39
Speaker
um Book of the month for March. We're recording this like the day before the last day of March, so we figured we'd go ahead and give it.
00:03:47
Speaker
And we're going to give it on the count of three. Ready? One, two, three. Sunrise on the reaping. This book... has literally ruined my life we just sat here for 30 minutes talking about it before hitting record because there's so much to discuss and it's my this series is already right ah roman empire but when i tell you i haven't been able to stop thinking about this book since i read it i am already doing i'm in the middle of a starting a hunger games marathon i watched ballad last night because i need to see if there was any easter eggs any crumbs that suzanne left us
00:04:27
Speaker
Yeah, i said when I finished this book, I said, you know, there's lots of authors out there that have the ability to upset me, but Suzanne Collins has the ability to rip my heart out, shatter it into a million pieces, and then put it through a meat grinder. Yeah.
00:04:44
Speaker
Like... don't know if that sums it up. I... And here's the thing. I read Ballad of Song, Words of Snakes before I read Sunrise on the Reaping, which made it worse. So i was like... Like right before, you mean?
00:04:57
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Yeah. Right before. Um... Yeah. it So the reason I'm doing a marathon too is because I like, like after Ballad came out, I remember reading Ballad and then having a Hunger Games marathon because it does kind of change your perspective on things a little bit.
00:05:14
Speaker
And so um if you guys don't know, I've got another podcast that I just started with another friend that we're doing the Hunger Games books and like rereading Ballad.
00:05:26
Speaker
now after having read sunrise on the reefing is like really crazy and watching the movie last night you're like you just pick out things that you probably didn't notice before and think like little crumbs that suzanne left behind so it's going to be interesting as we read through the books to see like well just in knowing like the backstory Of certain characters.
00:05:49
Speaker
Going into the. Like when we go to reread the trilogy. Knowing the backstory of those characters now. Is going to be so different. Ugh. Depression. It's going to be fun.
00:06:01
Speaker
Might even give a little bit more behind, a little more oomph behind why Katniss's mom went into such a catatonic state after her dad passed. Because it's like, you don't even know the things I've been through, Katniss.
00:06:15
Speaker
yes So, it's going to be interesting. Anyways, moving on. We'll get started on today's discussion.

Favorite Opening Scene Discussion

00:06:24
Speaker
So, we open up in chapter one, Owl Post.
00:06:29
Speaker
um We open up and it's nearly midnight and Harry is secretly studying his spell books under his covers. And I will have to say, I think this is my favorite opening scene of all the movies.
00:06:41
Speaker
ah Just him trying to get his one, like the Lumos thing going. I love this opening. um But my favorite quote from the very first line of the page is, Harry Potter was a highly unusual boy in many ways.
00:06:55
Speaker
Yep. And nothing's been truer. ah Exactly. Bless him. um He's reading about his homework that he had to do over the summer. um He reads about how the witch trials caused no harm to real witches and wizards since they could perform a flame-freezing charm and the flames would merely tickle.
00:07:13
Speaker
That's such an interesting fact to learn about because you're like, you hear about like in other things about like witch trials and like burning witches, but in Harry Potter it's like, it's not really. It just tickled. It's the most useless thing ever because like they can just cast a charm and it doesn't kill them.
00:07:30
Speaker
and he even, like it even mentions that there was a witch that got caught so many times on purpose because she liked the tickling sensation, which is kind of weird to put in a children's book.
00:07:41
Speaker
I'm like, okay. had a fetish whatever um but i thought that was interesting uh we learned that harry has picked the lock on the cupboard under the stairs to get his school stuff out while the dursleys were out front looking at vernon's new company car 100 learned about from fred and george they locked all his stuff away under the stairs so he had went and got it and he's been hiding in a loose floorboard under his bed well in his bedroom Um, he says

Harry's Correspondence and Family News

00:08:12
Speaker
that Ron had tried to call Harry and yelled into the phone instead. And unluckily, Vernon answered and was very upset Harry had given the number out.
00:08:22
Speaker
And when you think that this situation was bad, just wait till Arthur calls. Because he's calling, yelling at the top of his lungs, I'm calling you on the felly tone.
00:08:36
Speaker
I love him so much. But yeah, Ron was like screaming into the receiver saying he wanted to speak to Harry Potter and Vernon gets so upset about it. It's me, Ron Weasley. Bless it.
00:08:50
Speaker
found him from school? Harry goes on to tell us that, you know, he hadn't heard from Hermione either, but he suspects that Ron warned Hermione not to call um since she hadn't reached out either. He knows, like, since she was raised by muggles, she would know how to call on the phone, but Ron probably ruined it for everyone.
00:09:10
Speaker
Love that. um He's allowed to let Hedwig out at night, so he won't make a racket in his cage. Um... And as he's finishing his homework and hiding his things back under the loose floorboard in his room, um he realizes it's his birthday and he just turned 13.
00:09:29
Speaker
Lucky 13. Yeah. Is this our clue for reputation? Um, Hedwig's been gone two days and Harry is getting lonely without him there.
00:09:41
Speaker
Um, just then Harry looks out of his bedroom window and sees three owls soaring into his room carrying packages for Harry. One is Errol, which is Ron's owl.
00:09:51
Speaker
One is Hedwig and the other is a school owl. Um, Ron sent him a clipping from the daily profit of Arthur winning a prize at work. The whole family went to Egypt on the prize money to see bill and his work with Gringotts and Ron does mention that like some of the tombs are too scary that like Molly wouldn't let Jenny in and it's just like I feel like we also shouldn't be letting Ron in because arguably he's the biggest coward of the whole family yeah I think Jenny would actually be okay but that's fine um
00:10:27
Speaker
And Ron says he's getting a new wand with some of the remainder of the prize money. Finally. we Yes. And we get the line that's pretty popular where he tells Harry, don't let the muggles get you down.
00:10:40
Speaker
He also says, P.S., Percy's head boy. Yay! And Harry looks at the moving picture and notes Percy's head boy badge proudly displayed on his chest.
00:10:52
Speaker
He's letting everybody know. Um, Harry opens the package that Ron sent him and sees that it's a sneak-o-scope. And Ron writes, if there's someone untrustworthy around, it's supposed to light up and spin.
00:11:08
Speaker
He then goes on to say, it kept lighting up at dinner last night. And mentions that Bill thinks it's not working properly. Hmm. And it's like, gee willikers. Go ahead.
00:11:19
Speaker
Foreshadowing! Um, he then opens the next set of stuff, which is from a letter from Hermione. Um, she's on holiday in France.
00:11:31
Speaker
I wish I was Hermione. Um, she wants to meet up during the last week of the holidays and asks Harry if he'll be able to get away. Um, and then he opens up the gift from her expecting books or something boring.
00:11:43
Speaker
Give her a little credit, buddy. And instead finds that she has gotten him a brimstick servicing kit. We have the quote, there was a large jar of Fleetwood's high finish handle polish, a pair of gleaming silver tail twig clippers, a tiny brass compass to clip on your broom for long journeys, and a handbook of do-it-yourself broom care.
00:12:04
Speaker
It's nice gift. Thanks, Hermione.
00:12:10
Speaker
from... starfield for kid that's Part Thanks, Herman. um The last package that he sees is from Hagrid.

Gifts and School Preparations

00:12:18
Speaker
He sent a book labeled The Monster Book of Monsters.
00:12:22
Speaker
The book then comes to life and tries to chew Harry's arm off. um And Harry pins it down and hopes that it won't wake the Dursleys in the process. Of course, Hagrid would get him the most dangerous gift ever. Yes. but he said Listen, he's already had...
00:12:39
Speaker
the bones taken out of his arm. He doesn't need his arm completely chewed off. And I guess Hagrid's letter said something about like, this will come in handy this semester. And Harry's like,
00:12:52
Speaker
In what way? What do you mean, Haggard? Are we going to be facing another monster this semester? The last package Harry opens is his letter from Hogwarts with a list of his supplies for the school year.
00:13:05
Speaker
It also comp complained and also contained a slip of paper needing a parent or guardian's permission to attend Hogsmeade on school trips. Harry goes to sleep, glad for the first time that it's his birthday.
00:13:20
Speaker
Sad day. Or happy. um We then enter into chapter two when it really starts to kick off. um And chapter two is called Aunt Marge's Big Mistake.

Aunt Marge's Visit and Consequences

00:13:32
Speaker
Big being the operative word here. Big mistake. um Harry goes down to breakfast the next morning. Dursleys are sitting around the dining room table watching a TV.
00:13:45
Speaker
The Dursleys bought a new TV for this dining room since Deadly complained about walking to the living room from the kitchen. Love it. They're watching the news and Harry overhears the guy on the news channel say, The public has warned that Black is armed and extremely dangerous.
00:14:01
Speaker
A special hotline has been set up and any sighting of Black should be reported immediately. Vernon then gets upset that they don't actually say where he's escaped from. yeah Go ahead.
00:14:13
Speaker
Foreshadowing. um Vernon. Why did it spell it? Different way. Interesting. Vernon announces Marge's train is coming in at 10 o'clock and Harry fills his stomach bottom out.
00:14:27
Speaker
um Aunt Marge is Uncle Vernon's sister and she treats Harry worse than the Dursleys do. Whoops. He says he asks Vernon if Marge is coming here and vernon says marge will be here for a week and he warns harry of no funny business it's gonna be the longest week of harry's life he's like oh gosh Any funny business.
00:14:57
Speaker
Any at all. No funny business. um And we have the first round of Harry's ass on page 20 in the hard covers if you're following along.
00:15:08
Speaker
Firstly, growled Uncle Vernon, you'll keep a civil tongue in your head when you're talking to Marge. All right, said Harry bitterly, if she does when she's talking to me. Secondly, said Uncle Vernon, acting as though he had not heard Harry's reply, as Marge doesn't know anything about your abnormality, I don't want any any funny business, any funny stuff while she's here. You behave yourself, got me?
00:15:35
Speaker
And Harry responds with, I will if she does, said Harry through gritted teeth.
00:15:42
Speaker
Oh, um he wants harry to say Vernon wants Harry to say that he goes to St. Brutus' Secure Center for Incurably Criminal Boys, um and Harry decides to use this opportunity to make a deal with Vernon that he'll stick to the story if Vernon signs his permission slip for Hogsmeade.
00:16:05
Speaker
then we have more Harry's ass on page 20 when... when As Vernon is going out the door to go pick up Marge, Harry's following behind him to ask him for this permission slip, and Vernon says, I'm not taking you, he snarled as he turned to see Harry watching him.
00:16:22
Speaker
Like I wanted to come, said Harry coldly.
00:16:28
Speaker
He's like, do you honestly think I want to be stuck in a car with you? And Marge? And also Aunt Marge? No thanks. um Harry goes upstairs to stow away anything not normal and muggle-like to really play the part.
00:16:43
Speaker
um He tells Hedwig to go to Ron's in the meantime with Errol and writes Ron a note for them to take with him. Petunia tells Harry to fix his hair when he comes back downstairs and he figures Marge loves ridiculing him so much that he should just leave it Love it.
00:17:00
Speaker
Aunt Marge is finally here and she's kissing ah Dudley's cheek under a form of bribery as Harry witnesses Petunia slip a crisp 20 pounds into Dudley's hand.
00:17:13
Speaker
Love it. um Marge has her bulldog Ripper with her, which is Harry's least favorite of all of her dogs. um They all head into the kitchen and Harry keeps thinking about his broomstick care kit upstairs in his room to keep his temper.
00:17:31
Speaker
um Marge looks at Harry and says, so, she barked, still here, are you? Yes, said Harry. Don't you say yes in that ungrateful tone, Aunt Marge crowd?
00:17:46
Speaker
Yes. I love the delivery of it in the movie, too. He just goes, yes. can So bland. It's funny. Harry then proceeds to receive some more sass from Marge, words just failed me.
00:18:03
Speaker
He receives more sass from Marge, and Harry starts to think about how he'd rather be in an orphanage, but he keeps a lid on it, because Marge says that if it was up to her, she would have sent him off to an orphanage.
00:18:16
Speaker
And he's like, would retch rather be in an orphanage than here, but okay. Then he would end up like Tom Riddle. Oh, whoops. Um...
00:18:28
Speaker
He tells her he's been caned loads of times at his new school when she asks, and she tells him that he looks too happy about it, and they must not be doing good enough job, and that Vernon should write to the school.
00:18:40
Speaker
It's just the way he says it, because he's like... Oh, yeah, been caned loads of times. Been caned loads of times. He's, like, smiling about it. um Later in the week, Marge is settling herself in at home.
00:18:53
Speaker
And Harry is begging for the day that she goes back home. um At dinner, at the dinner table, she starts a fight with Harry talking smack about his parents and basically how her dogs are the same way. And if there's something wrong with the the mom, there's something wrong with the kids.
00:19:13
Speaker
um As Harry's getting upset, the glass that's in Marge's hand explodes and um And Marge plays it off saying she's got a very firm grip.
00:19:24
Speaker
But Vernon immediately suspects Harry. Three more days go by and finally it's the final evening of Marge's stay at number four Privet Drive.
00:19:35
Speaker
um And she starts insulting Harry's parents again um after drinking some bourbon, which I'm sure didn't help. Harry's trying to keep in mind his broomstick care kit upstairs in his room, and finally he just can't stand it anymore, and he defends his dad because Marge asks Petunia,
00:20:01
Speaker
what he did what james did for work and vernon says he didn't work he was unemployed and she says as i expected said aunt marge taking a huge swig of brandy and wiping her chin on her sleeve a no account good-for-nothing lazy scrounger who And she's cut off by Harry, who starts screaming he was not.
00:20:22
Speaker
Suddenly, Aunt Marge starts to feel her limbs explode. She starts to puff up like Violet Beauregard um from Charlie the Chocolate Factory and starts floating up towards the ceiling.
00:20:39
Speaker
and there she stays funniest thing ever um harry runs to his cupboard under the stairs and pulls out his trunk and heads for his room he puts everything in his trunk that was under the floorboard and heads for the front door as he's leaving vernon yells for him to come back and fix marge harry says she deserves it and leaves number four private drive into the night She deserved it.
00:21:06
Speaker
Mic drop. Into the night he goes. We open up to chapter three, the Night Bus, which is going to have a very fun scene that Hallie and I will improv for you in a second because I know she knows what I'm talking about.
00:21:19
Speaker
I've done it several times. um Harry sits on a wall in Magnolia Crescent. After sitting there for ten minutes, he moves from anger to panic.
00:21:31
Speaker
Don't panic. Panic. It's little high school musical reference. Thank you. He's stranded it alone and he believes he might be expelled for using magic outside of school. So he's panicking about what the heck he's gonna do.
00:21:43
Speaker
um He has no muggle money, but he's contemplating taking his broom to Diagon Alley where he knows that he has plenty of wizardry money. Honestly, if he was expelled and he had to live on his own, I think his wizardry money, like, I think he'd be okay.
00:21:55
Speaker
Yeah. If he just, like, paid for a room with a leaky cauldron or something. He had so much money in there. um He plans to take out his invisibility cloak, but feels like someone or something is watching him.
00:22:08
Speaker
He peers across the street and sees someone or something standing between the fence and a garage. He sees something very big with wide gleaming eyes. think we all know who it is. Yes.
00:22:21
Speaker
Love it. Pot foot. Um... Just then, Harry, as he's getting closer, he hears a loud bang and a triple-decker, violently purple bus, which had appeared out of thin air.

Knight Bus Adventure

00:22:35
Speaker
Gold lettering over the windshield spelled The Night Bus.
00:22:42
Speaker
A man steps out, and his name is Stan. And which role would you like to have, Allie? Harry, okay.
00:22:54
Speaker
What you doing down there? fell. What you fell over for? didn't do it on purpose. And then a Harry begins to look into the distance at this what he saw across the street.
00:23:08
Speaker
Stan peers around. What you looking at? I just love What you doing down there? Fell over. What you fell over for? didn't do it on purpose.
00:23:20
Speaker
It's fantastic scene. You should all watch it. Um...
00:23:25
Speaker
After explaining, Harry hops on board and gives the name Neville instead of his real name, knowing that it could only cause craziness. um Stan introduces him to the driver, Ernie Pring, and tells Ernie this is Neville Longbottom.
00:23:41
Speaker
Poor Neville. Like, why is he always drug into this? Because he gets drug into it later, too, in Deathly Hallows. They give the name Neville. Leave him alone. He's been through enough. Let him live.
00:23:53
Speaker
Harry looks around to see the buses filled with beds and some sleeping wizards and witches. When they take off, Harry he gets propelled around the bus. And I just envisioned, do you remember the vine of those guys sitting in the back of the transfer truck where they're sitting at the table and it starts moving and they're like getting bounced all around the trailer? Yep.
00:24:12
Speaker
That's all can picture. That's the night bus. They stop, they make a stop and a witch gets off and then they are off again. um As they're traveling to the next destination, Harry notices Stan reading a paper that has a label on it, Black, still at large.
00:24:30
Speaker
And I'll just read you the article. Yeah. Sirius Black, possibly the most infamous prisoner ever to be held in Azkaban Fortress, is still eluding capture. The Ministry of Magic confirmed today.
00:24:42
Speaker
We are doing all we can to recapture black, said the Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge, this morning, and we beg the magical community to remain calm. Fudge has been criticized by some members of the International Federation of Warlocks for informing the Muggle Prime Minister of the crisis.
00:25:01
Speaker
Well, really, I had to, don't you know? said an irritable fudge black is mad he's a danger to anyone who crosses him magic or muggle i have the prime minister's assurance that he will not breathe a word of black's true identity to anyone and let's face it who'd believe him if he did while muggles have been told that black is carrying a gun a kind of metal wand that muggles use to kill each other It's just a crazy way to describe it.
00:25:29
Speaker
The magical community lives in fear of a massacre like that of 12 years ago when Black murdered 13 people with a single curse.
00:25:40
Speaker
Lots of I know. Interesting. Taylor Swift? Yeah. Deep. Reputation. um Voldemort is a snake.
00:25:51
Speaker
Yes. ah He asks Stan about the man and... Stan goes in to explain that he killed 13 people and that there were witnesses and that after he did it, whenever they came to arrest him, he was just laughing maniacally, which to be fair, that looks bad.
00:26:14
Speaker
Yeah. Why was he laughing? Cool. But that was the night. Was it the night that his parents were killed or was it like the next night or something? I think it was... It may have been that night because I think Sirius gave Hagrid his motorcycle. Gave Hagrid his motorcycle but because sir well Sirius wanted to take him and they were like... It was either dumb but was it Dumbledore that said he couldn't.
00:26:43
Speaker
Yeah. But Dumbledore was like, no, you can't because... he was wanted because serious Was killed 13 people, which he didn't really kill 13 people. No. But they thought he did.
00:26:56
Speaker
It was a whole thing. Because they thought he was told them where Voldemort was. Because he was the secret keeper for James and Lily. Was supposed to be. Yeah, he was supposed to be. He ended up not being the secret keeper.
00:27:10
Speaker
They changed it last minute to Peter Pettigrew to throw Voldemort off. And Peter Pettigrew was working with Voldemort and gave the location of James and Lily. Yeah. I was trying to get to that, but why wouldn't you just make Dumbledore the secret keeper and just... Also, so why did Dumbledore have their invisibility clip? Yeah, why wasn't Dumbledore the secret keeper? Because we all know the man can keep secrets. At the end of the day, Dumbledore was the reason for all of it.
00:27:34
Speaker
Great. Okay. Back on it. um Stan tells Harry that he was sent to Azkaban prison, but mysteriously escaped and nobody knows how.
00:27:46
Speaker
um He asks where Harry's heading, and Harry says Diagon Alley, and they drive him to the Leaky Cauldron to drop him off. As they're getting off the bus, the Minister of Magic is there, and he proclaims, There you are, Harry!
00:28:01
Speaker
Stan and Earn can't believe they had Harry Potter on their bus! And Stan keeps going on about him being Harry Potter. Um... The minister ushers Harry inside and Fudge tells Tom, the innkeeper at Blakey Cauldron, that they'll take some tea.
00:28:19
Speaker
Fudge lectures Harry on taking off on his own. And Harry he can't quite figure out why he's so upset. um Harry explains his worry over being expelled and Fudge tells him he's fine, which confuses Harry even more.
00:28:32
Speaker
See, he has nothing to worry about. Harry, let's be real. Harry, you're never going to get expelled. No. Fudge starts acting very cagey about why Harry shouldn't be out on his own and why he's not expelled. He just keeps telling him circumstances have changed.

Meeting with Fudge at the Leaky Cauldron

00:28:48
Speaker
Fudge goes to check if Tom has a room for him, and while he's gone, or when he comes back, he tells Harry not to explore Muggle London and stay in Diagon Alley, but to be back each night before dark.
00:29:00
Speaker
When Harry questions why, Fudge says he doesn't want to lose Harry again, but it doesn't seem like that's his full reason. Mm-mm. Harry asks about Black and Fudge fumbles around for an answer.
00:29:13
Speaker
he asks Fudge to sign his permission slip but Fudge tells him no and says it's probably not best anyways and that he's not his parent or guardian so he couldn't do it. um Tom takes Harry to his room and Hedwig is there waiting for him and Harry is so exhausted that he falls asleep on top of his bed without even removing his glasses.
00:29:35
Speaker
And that's how we end chapter 3. Um, so, any last discussion points for these chapters? I think immediately, Fudge is just, he's always in denial.

Yep. No matter what, he's in denial. He doesn't believe, he doesn't believe anything. He's like, well, I don't know about that. And I'm like, Well, because, like, bro he's very much in denial about, like, just tell Harry everything that's going on.
00:30:04
Speaker
That should be the moral of this story. Harry knows nothing because nobody will tell him anything. Secrets don't make friends. And if everyone would just tell Harry everything, we could avoid a lot of turmoil down the road.
00:30:16
Speaker
Thank you. Well, because then, like... Isn't it? Arthur tells him later, like, I, you it tells him what's going on, and he says, I must ask you not to go looking for him, and Harry, which, that has a step two to it, but Harry says, why would I want to go looking for someone who wants to kill me?
00:30:37
Speaker
Which, is the point and like that's why they should tell him these things like why would he go looking except for the fact that he actively goes looking for the man who wants to kill him but that's only because then he finds out that he murdered his he's the reason his parents are dead it oh yeah yeah yeah harry doesn't make bright decisions Does he ever make the right decision? He's kind of stupid.
00:30:59
Speaker
Okay. um So, instead of doing character impressions, I thought we would change it up a little bit and just discuss new characters coming onto the scene. um So, we have Aunt Marge that got introduced this book. I don't think we see her again. i think we get mentions of her, like, she came for a week for the summer and it was awful. Like, I don't think we see her again.
00:31:21
Speaker
No. And honestly, i don't know if she'd ever come back after being turned into a balloon. And I think Fudge does mention, I might have skipped over, I think Fudge does mention that they went and fixed his aunt.
00:31:33
Speaker
Unfortunately. We don't expel people for blowing up their aunts.
00:31:38
Speaker
I think she's just, she is Vernon times two. Oh, yeah. Because Vernon, you know, it is kind of interesting to see their... the way they react with Marge, because it's almost like they're, like, not scared of Marge, but, you know, it does kind of seem like there is the slightest bit of weariness of, like, even Vernon saying that, like, James didn't work, he was unemployed.
00:32:06
Speaker
It's almost like there's the slightest bit of, like, defending little bit that they don't want to just sit there be like yeah let's talk about them they were trash individuals harry's the worst like they don't add to the flames about james and lily because at the end of the day betunia and lily were sisters yeah and Because they could very easily be like, cool we've been waiting for somebody else to join our group here. Yes, let's hate on some potters.
00:32:39
Speaker
But they don't. So, which a lot of that is I don't think they want Marge to learn anything. But they also don't harp on Harry that they do the way they do when Marge isn't there.
00:32:51
Speaker
So it's almost like it's like, we can pick on you, but nobody else can. Yeah. Kind of a relationship. So it's interesting. It's interesting to watch that relationship dynamic blossom a little bit into Deathly Hallows because of everything we learn with Petunia and how she was the reason that Voldemort couldn't find Harry while he was staying there that stuff.
00:33:13
Speaker
Yeah. um We have Tom the Innkeeper, which we don't see much of him. No. He's very, like, harry potter oh my god cornelia smudge whatever you need i'm here just just just your average wizarding fan boy yes um we have stan and erne who are perhaps like some of my favorite characters did not see them that much in the books no they make such a there's such like iconic presences because of that scene like what you fall over for like so many people quote that like what you fall over for when it's crazy how like
00:33:52
Speaker
known the night buses and it's like a whole thing at universal studios like you can take picture with such a like what am i trying to like a symbol for harry potter for it to literally only be like basically one scene yeah So it's kind of crazy.
00:34:07
Speaker
Like a few pages. Mm-hmm. Crazy. um Cornelius s Fudge. We got more of him in this book than we did the last time. Not the greatest minister. No, I think he doesn't have the backbone that you would expect a minister to have, which is why I really liked the next guy that takes over in Half-Wood Prince, because I thought he was he had the backbone.
00:34:30
Speaker
um Cornelius just doesn't really have the the wow factor to be like, ugh. I'm scared. Like, I don't want to cross. He of sits back. I don't want to cross the the Minister of Magic.
00:34:41
Speaker
He scares me. Like, nobody's saying that about Cornelius Fudge. Yeah. So. Which, and part of that, I think it's just because he's so insecure that, like, they offered Dumbledore the job so many times and he doesn't want it.
00:34:55
Speaker
Yeah. He's like, mm, no. So there's insecurity there. Um, alright. Our question of the week is So we didn't have any answers from last week.
00:35:07
Speaker
since last week And last week was technically a repost. yeah But our question for this week is, do you think it was smart for Harry to leave on his own?
00:35:17
Speaker
I think no, because, like, I mean, yes, we have some knowledge that we that he may not have at the time. But he has enough knowledge to be like, somebody has tried to kill me two times in a row like two years in a row.
00:35:31
Speaker
Maybe I shouldn't. Yeah. Somebody has tried to kill me on a multiple occasions, and there's also a lunatic wizard out on the loose that will probably kill anybody that looks at them. and But he doesn't even know that, though. No. He thinks that it's a... Gun-wielding maniac. Just a gun-wielding maniac, which in and of itself is still, like, hairy, like, my friend. Hairy.
00:35:58
Speaker
But, i don't know, it just seems kind of crazy that there was no sort of, like, let me send a letter to Ron, let me send a letter to Marani, let me send a letter to the Dumbledores. Like, come get me. Like, something.
00:36:11
Speaker
And it's just... He just leaves. And it's just like, with plan. She'd be like, hey. She'd just like send letter like, hey. So I accidentally blew up my aunt. Can you please come get me? Well, and it's kind of crazy to me, too, that he isn't immediately like, I'm gonna leave.
00:36:27
Speaker
I'm gonna go to the Weasleys. Yeah. Because, no, he's like, I don't want to bring them down with all the stuff I've got going on. Like, I don't know where I'm gonna go. might go to Diagon Alley. Like, brother, have a plan of some sort.
00:36:42
Speaker
I don't know. He never has a plan. Bless it. he He doesn't think before he leaps.
00:36:50
Speaker
All right. um yeah No changes on our Hogwarts poll. Nope. We still have eight votes. Three Hufflepuff, two Gryffindor, two Ravenclaw, one Slytherin.
00:37:02
Speaker
Slytherin's still in last. That's the only one thing I care about. My Hufflepuffs are going strong. Yep. um All right. Well, that is all we have for today's discussion. We've decided to kind pare these down a little bit, just like three chapters at a time, just to kind of make things a little bit easier and...
