Speaker: They're trying not to upset her and she's just kind of not really listening to them going on about how her life is nothing but misery at this place.
Speaker: And now people come along ruining my death. Like, bro she really did have like a kind of a sad death. If we really think about it. I feel like though she was annoying to begin with. Yeah, honestly, Tom. She was there. Do I really blame you in this situation? She was there just in pledge fleshling of that era. Yep. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker: okay so hello everyone and welcome back to family fiction with halle and carmen i am back this week i have a voice yay um but there still may be some coughing here and there so oh yeah you just don't cough on me i'm not sick it I tested negative for everything, but just woke up the next morning, no voice. So it's whatever. So the plan for today, we are going to be doing chapters eight through 11 of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Speaker: Before we get any further into it, just gonna throw out a quick spoiler alert. There will be spoilers for this book as well as the rest of the series. So if you have not read Harry Potter, then I would suggest quit listening and then read it and then come back to us.
Speaker: yeah We're going to go ahead and get out give out our currently readings. it i
Speaker: um We're going to do our currently readings. So my current read, I haven't started it yet, but um hopefully tonight, and that is King of Greed by Anna Huang. This is the third book in the Kings of Sin series. Super exciting. Carmen, what are you currently reading? Uh, my current read is All the Missing Pieces by Catherine Cowles. Haven't started it yet. I finished Lights Out by Nevis Allen yesterday, so this is my next read.
Speaker: and we were technically supposed to do this last week um but we're gonna do it this week and that is our book of the month. So Carmen do you want to give your book of the month? Well for January. I only read one book um and that was A Rising Throne by Kevin Heerning. I technically started Onyx Storm in January but I didn't finish it till like right at the beginning of February. So um it was kind of an easy book of the month to pick and that was The Rising Throne. Honestly, even if I had finished Onyx Storm in January, I might have still picked The Rising Throne as my book of the month because Onyx Storm left a little to be desired. Which that may be a whole episode in and of itself. So as for my book of the month,
Speaker: um To be fair, I finished Onyx Storm in January and it is not it is not my book of the month. um My book of the month is actually the only one left by Riley Sager. This was my first Riley Sager book and when I tell you when I finished this book, I literally said out loud I'm gonna need five to seven business days to recover from this book. It was so good. I was never more hooked into a mystery book in my life. I want to read more of Riley's books
Speaker: yeah I have a bunch of his books it was very good and I thought I had it figured out was completely wrong that's why you also need to read Catherine Cowell's books I never see it coming this I did not see coming at all it was whoo I literally almost flipped off the couch I was like I Oh my god. My invisible cameraman got a lot of footage from that read. I don't know. I... Yeah. I'm coming out of my rut which is nice because this will make book three that I've read this month. So I'm coming out of the rut. My nails coming off. No. I have an appointment Thursday. Okay. She's been coming off all day.
Speaker: all right goodbye now goodbye nail poor nail never saw it coming i have an appointment on thursday all right so without further ado let's go ahead and get into our discussion starting off with chapter eight the death day party Great title um So it is officially October in Hogwarts. It is a very rainy day, but that does not stop Oliver Wood from Continuing his Quidditch practices in the pouring rain that would suck because if you're flying around on a broom And it's like pouring rain be like bullets hitting your face. Yes
Speaker: um Harry is coming back from practice when he finds um nearly headless Nick looking a little sad so he asks him what's wrong and we find out that the reason that Nick had nearly headless Nick is sad is because he was rejected from the headless hunt.
Speaker: all because his head view into of a few inches of his his head is not completely off so therefore he cannot qualify. Bless him. So he's a little bit sad but about that but while the two are talking they are then interrupted by a high -pitched meow coming from the hallway and it is Mrs. Norris um Filch's cat so Nick warns Nick warns Harry to run away before he gets caught by Filch which doesn't work he and winds up getting caught anyways sounds about right which Harry he always gets caught yeah it's not very stealthy no
Speaker: Especially not and he got that freaking invisibility cloak. I know and he's Can't be stealthy with that either left it at the frickin top of freaking stairs and and absolutely um But he gets caught by Filch and he is dragged back into his office so that Filch can write a punishment complaint and he kind of just describes Filch's office and how there's all sorts of wooden filing cabinets that have a details of every single pupil that Filch has punished and it is especially pointed out that Fred and George Weasley had an entire drawer all to themselves of course they do you think which it's just funny that they didn't have a whole like filing cabinet honestly the there's no telling if there's like an extendable charm on the drawer probably just keeps going yep um so while Filch is in the off it
Speaker: he's writing up the punishment complaint when all of a sudden out of nowhere there is a huge bang that goes on and it is peeves. All peeves as usual. What are these ghosts? They're always causing chaos. Mostly just peeves. But I would also be peeves. I would also love to cause chaos in Hogwarts. So Filch runs out um with the cat going alongside him And Harry decides to do a little snooping in the office, which... Why? I have no idea. But I would also want to snoop. And he winds up finding a... It's like a form. ah That is a quick spell, a correspondence course in beginner's magic.
Speaker: so he's just kind of which is when it kind of gets squib it's revealed that filter's a squib he's a squib he's a squib bless him and he's a little embarrassed about it um but anyways uh Harry hears Filch come running back in, so he shoves the form back away so that he doesn't look like he's been snooping. And I just want to point out, I want to ask a question about this. When Filch comes back, he says that vanishing cabinet was extremely valuable. I have that in my notes. Is this the same vanishing cabinet? Yes. Okay. Cause I saw that and I was like, I have that in my notes as well. The vanishing cabinet? So they knew about it. Yeah. And chose not to do anything about it. That sounds about right.
Speaker: sounds about right about anything that is in Hogwarts um but when Filch comes back in he kind of notices um the quick spell envelope that Harry so just just casually just threw to the side and um he's kind of he is interrogating Harry about whether did he read it did you read it and Harry lies and says no um Harry's a horrible liar yes never put him on the variety lie detector no
Speaker: um and Filch basically says do not breathe a word of this and sends Harry out of the office, well Harry books it out of the office and um it's then once he's out of the office uh nearly had this headless neck comes back and it is revealed that Nick told Harry that Nick told peeps to cause a distraction to get Harry out of trouble we love nearly had the snake yes he was a Gryffindor ghost represent boo Gryffindor's got stick together I don't know we have
Speaker: Not the Bloody Baron. Is Bloody Baron Slytherin? I don't remember. We have, oh gosh, what's his name? It's the fat guy. It doesn't matter. Anyways, so Harry is grateful for this distraction and asks if there's any way that he can help. And Nick asks him to come to his 500th death day party. Not a birthday party. A death day party.
Speaker: Which, okay. Whatever. You know, they did something similar The Vampiridaries. Yes, they did. They have death days. Yep. Um, so Harry agrees to come and he also decides to invite Ron and Hermione as well. Drag them down with him. And
Speaker: Good lord. Yeah just a little bit um so the party takes place on Halloween so they all head down to the gen to the dungeon to the jungle to the jungle yeah um so Harry, Ron, and Hermione they head down to the dungeon for the death day party Um, while they're kind of making their way through the party, Hermione um spots Moaning Myrtle and is wanting to get the heck out of Dodge, which - I love Moaning Myrtle. Can't blame her. I love her so much. I want to talk to her all day. Yep. And Harry's asking who the heck is Moaning Myrtle and Hermione explains how she haunts one of the toilets in the girl's bathroom, um, which... or we Yep.
Speaker: Thank you. She's our foreshadowing alert this week. um So, it then, while they're talking about this, Ron spots food, which is... course he does But it's, once they get over to the food, they are very quickly horrified because it is straight up rotten.
Speaker: yeah kind of odd that they would invite them to come and then just not supply any food for them whatsoever yeah but it's like i don't know i guess they just didn't think about it because they're dead and they can't eat obviously but still you're like oh They could have gotten them some fresh food. Yeah, you you could have made an effort, Nick. You invited him. You should have at least tried. Especially because he wants Harry to like vouch for him with the headless hunt while he's there. Yep. Crazy. So, um, they are very much turned off by the food. And then, um,
Speaker: ah Peeves shows up and starts to talk to him and eventually ah waves over moaning Myrtle which Hermione absolutely hates her life at that moment. um So Myrtle glides up glides over there and it's then and then Peeves decides to snitch and say hey Hermione was just talking about you.
Speaker: Of course he does. He's a troublemaker. Yep. He's a troublemaker. Hermione tries to backtrack and talk about how, oh I was just meaning you look very nice and that doesn't work and she realizes Moaning's like, Moaning Myrtle's like, you're making fun of me. She gets very upset and then storms away. That tracks. So. She is the drama. Yep.
Speaker: Anyways, after that happens, uh, Nick finds the finds his way over to the Golden Trio and asks them if they are enjoying themselves and ah obviously all three of them decide to lie. Fair enough. Which I would too. Um, but then the party kind of gets interrupted when the Headless Hunt shows up and it's at this point where Harry you need the back nick up here and didn't didn't necessarily work um because once again Harry cannot be put on the spot no Harry actually can't be trusted in any situation nope absolutely cannot um
Speaker: So while this is going on um Ron is decides that he is very bored of this which can't really blame him and they all decide to kind of high tail it out of there and as they are walking away um Harry hears the eerie voice from the walls again talking about ripping and tearing and killing which That's exactly what you want to hear in a school for children. Honestly, at this point, he's probably like, you know, there's a crazy forest where death awaits. There's a um corridor where death awaits. Why not something else? Vanishing stairs. father or death Why not? Yep.
Speaker: So Harry is taken aback by this and he is trying to get Ron and Hermione to listen but they don't hear anything. um So Harry decides to do the most logical thing and follow said voice um and that's when he hears it go I smell blood, I smell blood and Harry is horrified that it's gonna kill somebody anne bra And in her mind are like, Harry, what are you talking about? He's going around the man. He is. he's losing He's losing it. Because they can't hear it, obviously. And so they're like, he's lost his mind. Could you imagine following your friend being like, it's gonna kill someone.
Speaker: what the heck are you talking about harry what's gonna kill something what is it harold he's like you got something to share with the class he's like lassie what is it lassie so um did jimmy fall down the well again so harry ron and hermione are trying, well Harry's following the voice, Ron and Hermione are not far behind. When Hermione points down the corridor and they see um writing on the wall, the Chamber of Secrets has been opened, enemies of the air beware. And Ron notices something hanging underneath and it is then that we see Mrs. Norris, Filch's cat, hanging by her tail.
Speaker: hellowell snitches get stitches quite literally um so so everyone is coming everyone hears all the commotion they come out and they see the The stiff cat and the hate speech on the wall is what I would call it. The graffiti. Yep, the graffiti. And then Draco opens his big mouth and says, enemies of the air beware, you'll be next, mudbloods. My name is Draco Malfoy. I am a racist. I hate Gryffindor house and mudbloods.
Speaker: And my parents work for the man who killed your parents. Would you like to be my friend?" I am a racist.
Speaker: And I just love how he fit like being my friend yet, part of. And it's kind, he's kind of a little bit of a psycho because he's grinning at the sight of the hanging immobile cat. So I'm like, Draco?
Speaker: Your red flags are showing. It is the scene of like, I feel like being my friend yet Potter. Yes, shake them. And that's basically how the chapter ends.
Speaker: And moving on to chapter nine, the writing on the wall. Great title. yes Very ominous title. Everyone is standing around in the hallway when Filch comes out and is wondering what's going on. He sees his cat petrified and hanging on the wall. And he is, it is straw. Yes. And I was just straw. And i immediately targets Harry saying, you murdered my cat.
Speaker: No, I just got it out. He got it out for Harry. I did just realize, I say that line a lot and it's actually from this movie. I was distraught. It's Moaning Myrtle. Oh yeah. In the bathroom. Um, just made that connection. So, Filch accuses Harry of murdering the cat, which, again, got it out for Harry. He's a cat killer. Harry the cat killer.
Speaker: um Dumbledore eventually arrives on the scene along with a lot of along with other teachers and he Dumbledore takes Filch, Potter, Weasley and Granger all to follow him and Lockhart once again inserts himself where he does not need to be and says my office is the closest so lucky I wasn't there so unlucky I wasn't there
Speaker: um So they all head into Lockhart's office exactly the countecass and McGonagall and Snape are there too. The but professor trio. Silver trio. The silver trio, yes. um So they get into Lockhart's office and and Dumbledore is examining the cat trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with it, if it's dead, if it's not dead.
Speaker: um Filch, not Filch, excuse me. Lockhart is making all sorts of comments and suggestions about how it was most definitely a curse that killed her. Probably the transmogrific, hello. I'm not even, some sort of curse. Transmogriffin? Griffin? Yeah, okay. Torture. I've seen it used many times. So unlucky I wasn't there.
Speaker: So unlucky I wasn't there. I know exactly the countecasts that could have helped her. And no one's really listening, and meanwhile Filch is in the corner just absolutely just mourning the loss of his cat, which I would too. R .I .P. Honestly, if either Pixie or Sammy would have been petrified, um we would also be publicly mourning. I want to see some justice! Someone has petrified my cat!
Speaker: I love this movie. It's underrated. um But harry feels Harry feels really sorry for this even though it's not his fault.
Speaker: um And Dumbledore is still trying to figure out what's wrong with the cat. Lockhart is still trying to make all sorts of suggestions. Nobody's really listening to him because nobody cares. And then Dumbledore finally reveals that she is not dead. She has actually been petrified, but he doesn't know why. Dumbledore. Surely you know why.
Speaker: I genuinely don't think he knows why because he would have taken care of the chamber because they ah thought that Hagrid opened it. He never had figured out who opened it. Oh, yeah, that's right. That is why I don't think he knows why. I think he had a suspicion that Tom was the reason. Yeah, I don't think he knows about the Basilisk. No, no, I don't think he knew but no.
Speaker: No. I think he, he suspected that it was Tom, but yeah he did not know about the chamber. No. Yeah. Cause Tom is a fricking. He knows the chamber exists, but he doesn't know how to get to it. Doesn't know how to get to it. Doesn't know how to open it. Um, but cause he doesn't speak person tongue, so he wouldn't know anything about it.
Speaker: Yeah. Okay. That's fair. to be That's fair. So... That we know of. I mean, that truffle and hoe. We could be very wrong. We literally know nothing about Dumbledore. So the plot twist is he's actually Tom Riddle's older brother and he knows Parseltongue and he is the reason behind all of it. He pulled a Peter Hale situation with Meredith from Team Wolf and was in a coma and spat about how whenever he got out of his coma, he was going to destroy the Wizarding World and here's how and Tom Riddle ever heard him in his sleep and decided to execute his plan like in season four of Team Wolf. Oh.
Speaker: all right so that's a crazy theory that is a wild time that was a Dumbledore is Peter Hale that was a crazy like segue like not segue just yep Way to go. oh yeah yeah So he doesn't know how it's been petrified. And once again, Filch immediately points fingers, looking at Harry, ask him. He probably knows. And Dumbledore comes to Harry's defense and says, no second year could have done this. It would take dark magic of the most advanced, but Filch is not having any of this. And it's just immediately like, he did it, he did it, he did it. You saw what he wrote on the wall, first of all. We don't know if Harry wrote that on the wall.
Speaker: um and it's the reason that he's accusing Harry of all this is because Harry found out that Filch is a squib let's be honest even if he didn't think he was a squib Filch would just immediately accuse Harry yeah because everyone accuses Harry because let's be honest it's usually Harry
Speaker: He usually finds himself in these situations. Yeah, I know. Sometimes by his own fault. 90 % of it is his fault. His actions got him here. Yep. So me? You think I did this crazy thing breaking school rules just because I broke school rules so many times last year? Me?
Speaker: oh Instead of the boy who lived, he's the boy who freaking got caught. the boy who didn't follow the rules. The boy who always gets caught. The boy who gets in trouble. The boy who is doing his best to not live. Because let's be honest, he puts himself in the worst situations of like, Carrie, do you want to be the boy who lived or you want to be the boy who got got like, figure it out. Yeah.
Speaker: So Harry is immediately like, I never touched Mrs. Norris and I don't even know what a squib is because, let's be real, Harry doesn't know anything about the Wizarding World because he doesn't read. That's my biggest pet peeve, let's be honest. Humboy finds out he's part of this Wizarding World. He's like, I don't need to know anything else. That's all I need to know. Thank you. Lesson over. Yeah. So then Snape, I just love, Snape decides to,
Speaker: make his presence known and i just love how it says if i might speak headmaster said snake from the shadows because of course he's lurking in the shadows like the drama queen he is um and he pretty much says that he's the original shadow daddy ah you Oh no. I'm never going to unsee that now. e First we had book one where we compared him to um, Elphaba and defined gravity with his cape. And now he's the original Shadow Daddy. What shall happen next? I don't even want to know.
Speaker: So, Snape pretty much says that Potter and his friends may have simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time. But we do have a set of suspicious circumstances here. Why was he in the upstairs corridor at all? Why wasn't he at the Halloween feast? See, Snape is also trying to find excuses to get Harry in trouble. I just... I just love that Snape's like... To chase Harry up a tree week. I just love that Snape's like, you know, I'd have to come to their defense.
Speaker: But no, I don't. He's like he's battling with himself. He's battling with that. I think they're actually okay and they weren't in the wrong place. And then internally he goes, wait a minute. This is James Potter's son. Wait a minute. It's Harry. ah mean ah they suck and I mean, ah why weren't they Why weren't they in the feast? Yeah.
Speaker: And so then Harry, Ron, and Hermione launch into the explanation about the death day party and saying like, listen, there were hundreds of ghosts there. We we have our alibi, sir. They will, you can go ask literally all the ghosts in Hogwarts. We were at the death day party. But I'm pretty sure even then Snape probably still wouldn't believe them. No, he wouldn't.
Speaker: Um, but Snape is still like, well, why didn't you join the feast afterwards? Why did you go up to that corridor? And Harry is once again be like, well, um, we wanted to go to bed. Lord. Mike. He's like, but we're tireded but because we were tired and want to go to bed. Without supper. It's time to go night night.
Speaker: and It's past my bedtime. I am a child. I'm a child of to divorce. oh My child of depression. But Snape is acting like he finally caught them. He's like, oh, you're going to go to bed without any supper? I didn't think ghosts provided food fit for living people at their parties. And Ron is like, yeah, we weren't hungry, but Snape isn't having any of it.
Speaker: and honestly they should have like if they're gonna say they're not hungry like i don't know there's just so many tactics like i would have tacked on like because the food was literally so disgusting that it ruined our appetite it ruined our appetite and made us not hungry so then we decided just to go to bed there's a hundred different there's a hundred different ways you could have went about it and they went about it all the wrong way once again they cannot be put in the spotlight They crack under pressure. Then again, they're also 12, so. Yeah. Good God. You're interrogating 12 year old children. What happening for 12 year olds? For bleeding a cat. Well, petrifying a cat, but. Yeah. I don't know. Well. Whose blood was it? Was it the cat? Or no, was it? Was it the cat's blood? No. Or was it Ginny's?
Speaker: No. No. Whose blood was it? I don't remember. I think it was like pig's blood or something. Hold on. i think it was I think it was pig's blood. I shall Google. Okay. Oh. It's never been explained.
Speaker: No. I think it's chicken's blood. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Because Hagrid says that several of his chickens have been killed. Oh, yeah, that's right. Okay, that answers it. And Juni had killed the chickens. I forgot about that. That answers that question. Okay. It's not confirmed, but that's most likely what happened.
Speaker: um So Snape is then like I see is that Potter is not being very truthful and once again he's trying that Gryffindor Slytherin rivalry is coming into play because he then suggests so much.
Speaker: Cool spirit. It's crazy. Guess how spirited he is about Slytherin winning the dang cup. He exhibits no other emotions towards anything else except for the stupid trophy.
Speaker: He's committed, Carmen. It's a wild time. Because if you would look - You just wouldn't think he would be that dedicated. Because look at him. He's literally, he's like, no man, I go to war for the dang house. He's literally the personification of a gray cloud. Like - I couldn't care less about anything else. Somebody give me that dang trophy.
Speaker: He is so doom and gloom, but yet when it is like coming to Hogwarts school spirit, Gryffindor versus Slytherin, oh, he is on board. He is ready to go to war. like He also has no emotions. So I imagine like if Slytherin won, he's probably just like, well done. And that's it. and Then he goes to bed. Yep. Then he goes to his room and like jumps up and down, celebrates, sets off fireworks in his room. yeahp Thanks about Lily.
Speaker: so So, he decides to just suggest that he should that Harry should be taken off of the Gryffindor Quidditch team until he is ready to be honest. And McGonagall is like, no way Severus. McGonagall's like, uh -uh. Yeah, because you know if you take my star player you ain't gonna win, boy.
Speaker: Yep. I imagine I want to be there for their smack talk. I want to hear it. The way she smack talks to Laura Sunbridge in lighter books like please. So McGonagall and Dumbledore both refuse this because quite literally McGonagall says it just straight up. There is no reason to stop the stopping from playing Quidditch. The cat was wasn't hit over the head with a broomstick and there is no evidence at all that Potter has done anything wrong.
Speaker: Which, yes, quite literally no evidence. You are going off of assumptions. Innocent until proven guilty. Yup. Dumbledore literally says that. Innocent until proven guilty Severus. And so Snape is ticked at this and so is Filch. And Filch is still demanding for punishment and Dumbledore then makes a promise to Filch being like, we will be able to cure her. um And that's Professor Sprout has managed to get some of the mandrakes. And to Professor Sprout. Quite literally, yes. and they will have a purplele puff yep And they will have a potion made that will revive the cat.
Speaker: and once again Lockhart's still here and he butts in and it's like I'm I'll make it I must have done it a hundred times I could whip up a mandrake restorative draw in my sleep which then Snape interrupts and says um excuse me but I believe I am the potions headmaster here shut that conversation down Severus
Speaker: You can't be defense against the dark arts teacher, you might as well. I know, he's like - Be the best potions master. You're like, you stick to your lane. Stay in your lane, I'll stay in mine. I'll stay at mine, especially y 'all wanted to be in your lane, they told me no, so you can't take my job by golly.
Speaker: um So Dumbledore then sends Harry, Ron, and Hermione out. um And while they're walking down the corridor,
Speaker: um Harry is like, do you think I maybe should have told him about the voice that I heard? And then Ron is like, nope. big No, because - Wouldn't have saved us so much time if you would have.
Speaker: Yes, it would have because Dumbledore could have been like, yeah you're just a Slytherin. Excuse me. yeah You're just a partial tongue. um You have some traits that Tom Riddle also had because of the night that he cursed you and your Horcrux. Yay. Quite literally, Harry, this is the one time you shouldn't have listened to your Ron.
Speaker: like if he would have told Dumbledore this would have been a lot this would have been solved so much quicker and Ron pretty much says that hearing voices no one else can hear isn't a good sign even in the wizarding world and Harry's like you guys do believe me right especially because Dumbledore would have been like you know Tom Riddle also had that gift and if you're hearing that That's why I was suspicious of Tom all those years. And you can hear the Parseltongue of the thing. So And by the way, you're a Horcrux. You're going to have to die one day. Sorry.
Speaker: I don't see if we would have been in if we would have been in these books the series wouldn't have been half as long. i oh So Harry is then curious about how what does the chamber the chamber has been opened what does that mean and Harry what do you mean what does it mean? It's been opened.
Speaker: um and he Harry also kind of asked about what on earth is a squid reason he wasn't in Ravenclaw he wouldn't have made it no he wouldn't have done the homework and that would have alone got him kicked out yep and Ron kind of talks about how there there is a story about a secret chamber at Hogwarts once and then he also talks about what a squib is and basically how it is the someone who was born into a wizarding family but does not have any magical powers the opposite of a muggle born um and he's and they kind of come to the assumption that maybe Filch is trying to learn magic from a quick spell course which to be fair
Speaker: I would also be pissed if I was a squib. I would want to learn magic. Hello? You're gonna put me in a wizarding family and I'm not gonna have magic? What the heck? It would happen to Phil of all people.
Speaker: um So eventually a clock chimes off somewhere and Harry goes midnight. We better get to bed before Snape comes along and tries to frame us for something else.
Speaker: that's another thing too they left that party so late for it to already be midnight and yet snipe is questioning why they didn't come to supper dude it's midnight it's like 11 o 'clock it's no longer supper yeah bro um so excuse me uh for the next few days um The school is abuzz with the attack on Filch's cat and Filch is letting everybody know about this attack because he is keeping an eye on the scene of the crime. He is pacing up and down that spot and thinking as though he would think the attacker would come back, which... Yeah, I'm not really sure what purpose that's serving. he's He's making a statement, Carmen. My cat will have justice. He's on strike.
Speaker: Yep. um And they also talk about how Jenny has been very disturbed by the whole situation. And this is another. shadow wing yep And this is also, here's another instance of Jenny being one of my favorites. She is a cat lover. Jenny is my favorite character in the books. I love her so much. She developed such a personality that they just left out of the movies. They gave her none. Nothing.
Speaker: Um, but Ron is just trying to kind of reassure Jenny, be like, it's okay. You didn't really know Mrs. Norris. She was a horrible cat. She's literally like, bro, that's not what I'm stressing about. So please back off. I'm going through something. Yep.
Speaker: And it's also fun to point out that the attack also had an effect on Hermione um because they talk about how it was, usually Hermione spends a lot of her time reading, but now she is doing almost nothing else. Like, dang, this has, homegirl's been affected. She's like, she's coping. It's my time. It's my time. I'm i'm doomed.
Speaker: If anybody's gonna learn anything, it's gonna be, it's gonna be me. Harry was also, Harry was held back in potions because Snape made him stay behind a scrape. Two weren't off the desk. Why? It doesn't say why he was held back, but I'm sure Snape found some reason. Yeah, it was just to punish Harry.
Speaker: just your typical Just your typical Monday. It's fine. Just another manic Monday. I wish it was Sunday. a When Harry's going up to meet Ron in the library, when he sees Justin Finch Fletchley, your residential Hufflepuff boy Carmen. I don't want to claim him. He gets on my nerves.
Speaker: Um, and Harry tries to be nice and greet him, but before he can say anything, Justin sped off in the opposite direction. Rude. He's our Cho Ching. Rivenclaw also hates Cho Ching. So, they are - He's our Percy Weasley. Yup. Meh. Um.
Speaker: Where did I lost my place? Harry finds Ron in the back of the library working on their history of magic homework and Hermione eventually comes out somewhere and
Speaker: Uh, Harry does tell Ron about Justin literally running away from him, which, you know. Harry spends an awful lot of time in these chapters worrying about what Justin thinks of him. And I'm just like, bro, you gotta let it go. You gotta to let it go. You're such a people pleaser in this moment and I need you to not be. Thank you. Thank you.
Speaker: And Hermione eventually emerges and talks about how like literally all the copies of Hogwarts of history have been taken out because everybody else is wanting to learn about the Chamber of Secrets. Everybody's wanting to know, all right, what's this Chamber of Secrets about? If only they had Google. Amen. Quite literally.
Speaker: um And why don't they have some sort of like internet thing? Why is the Wizarding World so old school? Hmm. Google existed? Mm -hmm. Why? I guess they just didn't want to... I guess they wanted... They needed to have something like a... Like a Wizard of Irelay place where it's like the wide Wizarding Web. Mm -hmm. Yeah. I don't know. That's interesting.
Speaker: Could you imagine? Literally all the problems would be solved with just a quick little type on the keyboard. And not a single cell phone among them. Why? like
Speaker: Honestly, Wizards didn't know how to use them, but it's surprising that like Muggleborns and stuff don't have them.
Speaker: kosh could you imagine Hermione with a phone? I mean they wouldn't have had them in the early books. It would probably have been closer to the later books and even then it would have been a flip phone. Hermione would have had a Kindle. I didn't exist yet. I know. But they um eight like even towards the end of the lighter books it would have been probably a flip phone but. Yeah. It's interesting. Mm -hmm. Of course I guess they have.
Speaker: Yeah. They do have land lines. Mm -hmm. Because Arthur Weasley calls in the next book and is yelling through it on the felly tone. That's what he calls it. I think that's called bonfire actually. Yeah. So. The felly tone. Skipping forward to History of Magic, which once again the first sentence of this paragraph is, history of magic was the dullest subject on their schedule, which royally ticks me off.
Speaker: To be fair, if Benz is like monotoned, yeah then it could be worse. And he mostly is talking about the troll wars. yeah So maybe it's not as interesting. Yeah. I don't know. it It would be a class that would be either really enjoyable or really not depending on what you're talking about and depending on the professor.
Speaker: because I think too it's their only class where they're not like doing spells doing something like spells or potions or charms or even defense against the dark arts you know maybe they're learning about how to defend themselves even if they're not doing a spell there's just it's the only class where they're not doing something Yep. So while they're in the class, um Hermione decides to ask um if he could tell them anything about the Chamber of Secrets. And then that immediately grabs everybody's attention because everybody wants to know. um
Speaker: And the professor's like, I deal with facts, Miss Granger, not myths and legends. and goes back to trying to teach what he's wanting to teach. And then she kind of fluffs him up a little bit and is just like, but don't legends always have a basis? In fact, look at her. She's being a little smart. She's playing the game. We love her. And so that kind of gets his attention and he decides okay I'll tell you all you want to know about it. So I'm just gonna read these passages because it's I can't sum all this up but basically
Speaker: You all know, of course, that Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago. The precise date is uncertain by the four greatest witches and wizards of the age. The four schoolhouses are named after them, Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. They built this castle together, far from prying muggle eyes, for it was an age when magic was feared by common people, and witches and wizards suffered much persecution.
Speaker: For a few years, the founders worked in harmony together, seeking out youngsters who showed signs of magic and bringing them to the castle to be educated. but then disagreements sprang up between them. A rift began to grow between Slytherin and the others. Slytherin wished to be more selective about the students admitted to Hogwarts. He believed that magical learning should be kept within all magic families. He disliked taking students of muggle parentage, believing them to be untrustworthy. After a while, there was a serious argument on the subject between Slytherin and Gryffindor, and Slytherin left the school.
Speaker: Reliable historical sources tell us this much, but these honest facts have been obscured by the fanciful legend of the Chamber of Secrets. The story goes that Slytherin had built a hidden chamber in the castle of which the other founders knew nothing. Slytherin, according to the legend, sealed the Chamber of Secrets so that no one would none would be able to open it until his own true heir arrived at the school.
Speaker: The heir alone would be able to unseal the Chamber of Secrets, unleash the horror within, and use it to purge the school of all who were unworthy to study magic." And then he ends it with being like, but all this whole, this whole thing is a bunch of nonsense and how the school was searched for the evidence of such a chamber and they found nothing. So it was just made up as like a story. Um,
Speaker: Hermione keeps asking questions about like, what do you mean by the horror within the chamber? And he the Professor Bins replies that it's believed that there's some sort of monster which the heir of Slytherin alone can control. And again goes with like, this thing doesn't exist. There's no chamber. There's no monster. And Seamus pipes up and asks questions. everybody Everybody's curious. You start down that - I just love how he just opened up a whole can of worms. You tell them this whole story like, well, wait a minute. What do you mean? There's there's a giant monster in Hogwarts, which wouldn't surprise me and doesn't surprise anybody in the slightest. I'd be like, ah okay, excuse me. There's a what?
Speaker: You're telling me there's a giant snake rolling around the walls? I wonder how many letters went out to parents the next day, like, mom, I'm coming home. But people keep piping up and asking questions, but then Professor Benz finally shuts it down. I wonder on average each school year, how many transfers they had of people like, I'm going to Ilvermorny, or the Babaton Academy, or my butt would be going to Ilvermorny, hello?
Speaker: um but uh yeah i love them um give me a whole give me a whole story with the bow baton academy please and thank you um but professor bens is like it is a myth it does not exist he shuts that conversation down and goes back to teaching which we love um
Speaker: So it's after that class and Ron is talking about how like I always knew Salazar Slytherin was a twisted old loony. Fair. Which very accurate description um While Harry and Hermione are talking, Harry is not saying anything. He is a little bit quiet because he is remembering on the fact that the Sorting Hat had seriously considered putting him in Slytherin. He relays on that conversation. You could be great, you know. It's all here in your head and Slytherin would help you on the way to greatness. No doubt about that.
Speaker: And obviously he's like, no, don't put me in Slytherin, please. Harry's just like, am I? Harry's having a crisis. The villain? Am I the villain? Is it me? Am I the drama? I don't think I'm the drama. Maybe I am. Am I the villain? I don't think I'm the villain. My favorite part of all this is that he legitimately thinks that he's the heir to Slytherin, but then he doesn't give any thought to the fact of like, but I didn't.
Speaker: Petrified the cat. I didn't do the writing on the wall. And I didn't open the chamber. But it must be me. Bro.
Speaker: he's not the He's not the brightest bulb in the chandelier. Bless him. um Meanwhile, while Harry is having this um little crisis of his, um Colin Creevy comes around and greets Harry. Bless him. He's just an innocent little boy. Go away, Colin. And Harry is just kind of ignoring him. um
Speaker: and um it's like bro i'm having an identity crisis quite literally take a step back that'd be great quite literally so hermione is wondering what colin's because colin told him that hey there's a boy in my class that's saying you're blah blah blah and and hermione is wondering what this is and harry then says oh they think i'm Slytherin's heir i expect which makes him remember about how Justin literally ran away from him. And Ron goes, people here will believe anything. For real, for real. But most of the times it's true, Ron. So it's based in fact. Yeah. And Ron and them were talking about how like, is there actually a chamber of secrets? And Hermione for once doesn't know the answer.
Speaker: Which is, if she don't know the answer, it's serious business people. But she never knows the answer and they figure it out in the end. Yup.
Speaker: Um, and they kind of speculate, be like, I don't know, but whatever attacked Mrs. Norris, uh, might not be human. And they just keep thinking about the message. The chamber of secrets has been opened. Um,
Speaker: Because they find themselves at that same corridor and Harry and them decide, okay, let's snoop at the scene of the crime. They always snooping.
Speaker: And... Don't be suspicious. Don't be suspicious. Don't be so suspicious. Don't be suspicious. Don't be suspicious. And as they're looking around, um Hermione points out um some some thread and some spiders crawling around which we then we then find out that Harry or not Harry, Ron does not like spiders which very valid. he too run
Speaker: Why could they be followed butterflies?
Speaker: Um, why I also don't like them. And they're kind of, these spiders are kind of acting strange and I take a lot of like a lot of happiness out of killing them and Hogwarts legacy Mm -hmm. It's my favorite thing. Yeah, I actually physically hunt down the spiders therefore to kill them and then I kill the little baby spiders that are hatching I Set them on fire but They're dead
Speaker: you like So Ron is like, I don't like spiders and Hermione's like, I never knew that. You use spiders and potions loads of times. And then Ron goes, I don't mind them dead. They're dead. I just don't like the way they move. Same Ron. I don't even like them dead.
Speaker: yeah yes Honestly, I don't like them dead because I don't trust them because there's some that get in our pool that's like the play dead and then all of a sudden they resurface and there they go. yeah And it's like you little piece of crap.
Speaker: Now to be fair, this fear kind of stems from once again some more Ron childhood trauma because Fred turned Ron's teddy bear into a big filthy spider because he broke his toy broomstick. I would literally never leave my house again. I would never leave the corner of my bed. I just love how Ron breaks Fred's Broom toy broomstick and Fred decides as punishment to turn the teddy bear into a giant spider like the size of a teddy bear It would be a spider the size of a teddy bear I can't Carmen is physically ill So
Speaker: While they're talking about it, um Hermione remembers or no, Harry remembers about all all of the water that was on the floor and they're trying to figure out where that come from and they kind of follow it and to remember where it is and they find it going into the girls toilet which is Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. Foreshadowing.
Speaker: ah So they all decide to go into the girl's bathroom. Let's just all go in. Let's just all go together. um tro ah and
Speaker: I would just like to point out that Harry, as soon as they go inside, they describe it as, it was the gloomiest, most depressing bathroom Harry had ever set foot in, which honestly, same. It is a pretty sad bathroom. I think it's such a cool bathroom. It's in Hogwarts Legacy and I've tried to figure out if I can open up hu the sink, but I can't figure it out if I can or not. I've tried so hard. I'm like, let me in there. I know what's in there. You see this?
Speaker: um Hermione um is looking around and then finally, Moaning Myrtle shows up and she greets her and Moaning Myrtle eyes Harry and ro Ron and goes, this is a girl's bathroom. They're not girls.
Speaker: And you're not a woman. And I just love how Hermione's excuse is like, oh, I just wanted to show them how nice this bathroom is bro. I'm like, that's the best you could come up with okay um and they're trying to gonna they're trying to ask moaning Myrtle if she saw anything and Myrtle's like why are you whispering she's a insecure little ghost bless her because she thinks they're talking about her heronoia she is paranoid and
Speaker: They're trying not to upset her and she's just kind of not really listening to them going on about how um her life is nothing but misery at this place.
Speaker: And now people come along ruining my death. Like, she really did have like a kind of a sad death. If we really think about it. I feel like though she was annoying to begin with. Yeah. Honestly, Tom. She was there. Do I really blame you in this situation? She was there just in fleshly. Out of that era. Yep. Aye yai yai yai yai. Um.
Speaker: They're not, obviously they're not gonna get anything out of Moaning Myrtle, so they all decide to leave. But as they're barely closing the door on the bathroom, they are caught by Percy Weasley. ah The buzzkill. The bane of my existence.
Speaker: um
Speaker: Percy is all over them being like, why are you in the girl's bathroom? um You guys are looking very suspicious. and Ron immediately is on the defense be like listen we never laid a finger on that cat and um he is just I but mean let me just say Percy and Ron they got that beef they do because Percy is like that's what I told Ginny but she still seems to think you're going to be expelled I've never seen her so upset
Speaker: And then Ron's like, you you don't care about Jenny. You're just worried I'm gonna mess up your chance of being head boy. And then Percy eventually ends it with being taking away five points from Gryffindor. Which doesn't really matter in the end because they're gonna get all their points back anyways. from As they're after they get in trouble, they head away and they all start to think about the golden trio are kind of starting to speculate, all right.
Speaker: It's not us who did this. Who wants to harm all the muggleborns? Who thinks they are pieces of garbage and immediately they all go Malfoy. I love that they suspect him and Snape every single year and have it once been right but they're like one of these years it's gonna we're gonna be right. Yep and they think that he might be the heir of Slytherin um which to be fair they're not They're not far off because Lucius is the one who started the whole thing. Yeah. Um, and Harry's talking about like his whole, look at his whole family. They could have all been in Slytherin. They're all was boasting about it. He could easily be Slytherin's descent.
Speaker: Slytherin's descendant. They freaking wish. Yeah, I know. His father's definitely evil enough. But also, you don't think that if they were the heir of Slytherin, Draco wouldn't have like mentioned that already? He wouldn't have already opened his big fat mouth about it. Oh yeah, I'm the heir. You're the boy who lived? I'm the heir of Slytherin, buddy. Yeah. Like, that's how that conversation went.
Speaker: um So they are dead set on this that Malfoy could be the heir of Slytherin and they need to find a way to prove it. So what they're gonna do is they're going to spy on Malfoy. And to do this um they are planning on to make, Hermione suggests to make a polyjuice potion to turn themselves into Slytherins. Students to sneak into the common room
Speaker: and just spy on Malfoy which solid plan guys we love it and that's how the chapter ends they get there they get in their plan in motion moving on to chapter 10 the rogue bludger this is gonna be a good one we still struggling over here um so dri it out or so We are back in Professor Lockhart's defense against the dark arts class and um It's pointed out that since the disastrous episode of the pixies um there has not been any live creatures brought back into the class which Understandable considering what happened literally caused chaos um And
Speaker: They've pretty much resumed to like role -playing in this class because Harry is literally forced to play a Transylvanian villager whom Lockhart cured of a babbling curse. wit Is this a Defense Against the Dark Arts class or is this theater class? He's like, let's play my greatest hits.
Speaker: Live. Yep. An ember. I would hate my life if I was in this class. And
Speaker: um so the class eventually ends and Hermione and the golden rest of the trio are kind of starting to set their plan in motion so they eventually they saddle up to Lockhart's desks and she asks him to sign a piece of paper to check something out in the restricted section of the library which she's working her magic she's kind of buttering him up a little bit I mean like this is the book it's my it's I love this book um she's just she's really fluffing him up which that's a way to get to Gilderoy's heart you feed his ego a little bit and he's in the palm of your hand um so she gets the book she gets it signed for and they head back out um Lockhart talks to Harry about Quidditch um and how he was a seeker too
Speaker: I was asked to try for the national squad but prefer to dedicate my life to the eradication of the dark forces. Whatever.
Speaker: oh
Speaker: um And they are talking about how like that was too easy to get that book. He didn't even pay attention to what book we were getting. And Ron pretty much says it's because he's an idiot. He says he's a brainless git but you know what? and He's an idiot.
Speaker: So bad. She's struggling over here. um So they are in the library. They're reading up on the on the polly juice potion and trying to figure out how to make it. um And they decide that theyre trying to figure well Hermione's trying to figure out how to make it let's be real we better be glad Hermione's making this potion because if Ron or Harry tried to make it they'd probably die um Hermione's talking about all the ingredients they're gonna have to get and how they're pretty much gonna have to steal these ingredients um and Hermione's like well if you two are gonna chicken it out then okay um she's like I don't want to break the rules and steal but
Speaker: If I don't, I will probably be dead. um So I guess this air this is a good this sta ah good enough reason to break the rules.
Speaker: um she's like i don't don't blame her um They're trying to figure out how to make how long it'll take to make it and it will take a month.
Speaker: And Ron is flipping out over this because he says Malfoy could have attacked half the Muggleborns in the school by then. They're really rolling with Malfoy being the heir of Slytherin. Like, listen Hermione, he'll kill half the school by then. You need to wrap this up. So, I just love how Ron mutters to Harry. It'll be a lot less hassle if you can just knock Malfoy off his broom tomorrow. He really is asking Harry to commit violence.
Speaker: always commit knock him off his broom give him a concussion it may wind up kill him um wind up killing him just do something um so fast forward to saturday um okay it's okay so it is saturday and we are having the quidditch match between glyph glyphindor Gryffindor and Slytherin and um to prep for right before the match goes off um we have Oliver Wood kind of slightly threatening Harry um you better be the best dang sneaker seeker ever or you're done for which very valid we all know how committed Oliver Wood is to Quidditch. So
Speaker: um madam hooch blows the whistle and the game is underway with Harry and Ron with Harry and Draco kind of having their little bickering session and um while the game is going on there is a bludger that is going around and is stopping at nothing but to target Harry and no matter how many times they hit it away it keeps going back towards Harry's head. Um Fred and George are trying to help Harry and it's not really working and it's then that Fred kind of points out that someone's probably tampered with the bludger and
Speaker: um they try to signal Wood for a time out which they get so they all head down to the ground and Wood is scolding the Gryffindor team because they're behind and um George and them point out that they're trying to stop a bludger from murdering Harry because someone has fixed the bludger and it won't leave Harry alone And this confuses Oliver Wood because all the bludgers have been locked away in Madame Hooch's office, so there's no way somebody could have tampered with him. But then again, it's Hogwarts. Can't have anything go right. So then Harry is like, forget it. um
Speaker: You guys just deal with the rest of the team. He'll deal with the rogue bludger. Bless his heart. um
Speaker: where my up Anyways, timeout's over and they head back into the game and leave Harry to defend the Bludger all on his own. He can't go one Quidditch game without something going wrong. At this point, Harry, you shouldn't play Quidditch. Yeah. Because you can't have a normal game. Fair.
Speaker: um
Speaker: So Harry and Malfoy are going back and forth trying to get this trying to get the golden snitch and Harry at the last second catches it but not before the blood the rogue bludger hits him and smashes into his elbow breaking Harry's arm. I just oh I can't Harry eventually lands on the ground with the snitch in his hand and winning the game.
Speaker: but not before passing out. um Once he comes to, he sees someone leaning over him and immediately moans out, oh no, not you, because it is Gilderoy Lockhart.
Speaker: fair and
Speaker: Lockhart's like, don't worry, I'm gonna fix your arm. Harry is like, no, I'm good. I should probably go to the recovery wing and get it fixed. Um, and he's also talking and he's also like, I don't want a photo of this Colin. Bless his heart. And...
Speaker: Everybody else is like, yeah, he really should go to the hospital wing. um And Harry's also in Oliver Woods like, he really should also great capture Harry. Really spectacular. Your best yet. Gotta throw them them compliments.
Speaker: um
Speaker: So Lockhart is trying to cast a spell to fix the arm, but it winds up backfiring. Um, because instead of fixing his arm, it actually winds up Harry having no bones in his arm. No bones. I don't have a skull or bones. And so it is pretty safe to say that Madame Pomfrey,
Speaker: is not pleased at all with this situation, saying you should have come straight to me, which is what Harry was trying to tell him. way And she talks about how she can make she can fix it, she can fix it, but it will be very painful and he will have to stay the night. um And this is the perfect opportunity for Ron to finally kind of just poke more at Hermione and be like, how are you gonna stick up for Gilderoy Lockhart now, huh?
Speaker: Harry is currently getting his arm fixed and they're trying to figure out how, um, the bludger was fixed and they assume that Malfoy fixed it again. Point and fingers. And so, um, the rest of the Gryffindor team comes in there and congratulates Harry and then eventually Madame Poffrey kicks them all out and Harry is left alone in the hospital wing. About a couple hours later, um Harry is woken up by hearing somebody sound like they're in pain. And he looks up and sees that it is Dolby. Oh, Dolby. And he sees that Dolby is crying and talking about how Harry Potter has come back to school even though I warned you not to come back.
Speaker: Um, and why didn't he go back home when he missed the train? And Harry is like, how did you know that I missed the train? And it's then that Harry comes to the realization that it was Dobby who stopped the barrier from letting him and Ron through. He is trying to do whatever it takes to not let Harry go back to Hogwarts. He is it's already at Hogwarts. Committed.
Speaker: Yeah, but I'm like buddy and then it is also revealed um that Dobby also, well yes, Dobby also was the one who fixed the bludger that tried to pretty much murder Harry at this point because it was like coming after him and um Harry's like you made that bludger try to kill me and Harry and Dobby's like oh no never to kill you I'm trying to save your life he only wanted Harry to be hurt enough to send home Dobby only meant to maim seriously
Speaker: i pree We appreciate the gesture, but it's the wrong way to do it. And I honestly, Dobby, your efforts are in vain because Harry is constantly gonna throw himself into danger. So just quit while you're behind.
Speaker: um
Speaker: um And it is then that Dobby eventually reveals that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened once more and Dobby freezes because he realizes, oh shoot, I've spilled a big secret. Him and Hagrid.
Speaker: Cannot keep their mouth shut.
Speaker: um And Dobby proceeds to punish himself because he opened the secret up. And Harry's asking him like, it's how has it been opened before? You need to tell me. um And he's also asking, but I'm not muggle - but I'm not muggle -born, how can I be in danger from the ta from the chamber? And Dobby's like, I can't tell you anymore.
Speaker: um There's dark things going on and you cannot be here when they happen. You cannot meddle because it is too dangerous. Which goes in one ear and out the other if with Harry. Because he's gonna meddle. And he is trying to ask Dobby who opened the chamber, tell me who opened the chamber.
Speaker: anne And...
Speaker: And Dobby's like, I can't tell you. And Harry is just like, he's nailing him. He's like, you've got to tell me one. If you don't tell me, one of my friends is muggle born. She's going to die. If you don't tell me, you open the chamber.
Speaker: oh Um, but they hear footsteps coming down the hallway. And so Dobby flees the scene and enters Dumbledore. The man, the myth, the legend. Um,
Speaker: matter And falling behind Dumbledore is McGonagall and Madame Pomfrey. And um they're asking has there been another there's been another attack and that Minerva found him on the stairs. And that they were whoever this was was trying to come up to see Harry Potter and Harry looks over and sees that it is Colin Creevy who has been petrified. Dun dun dun.
Speaker: And, um, they're trying to figure out, um, who attacked him and their, what this means. Um, well, first of all, they see that about the camera and they're like, maybe he captured the attacker, but the camera has been melted. RIP. But imagine if it would have caught the attacker, it would have saved save them a lot of time. Um,
Speaker: And so Madame McGonagall's asking, what does this mean? And Dumbledore states it means that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened. They're asking, well who has opened it? And Dumbledore says the question is not who, the question is how. And that's how the chapter ends. But also why is the question not who? Yeah, i come on, Dumbledore.
Speaker: Moving on to chapter 11, the dueling club. So Harry wakes up the next day um to see his arm completely healed and still traumatized by the situation that happened. Bless his heart. I would also, I would not want to be around Lockhart ever again. Like, I wouldn't want to be in that class ever again. Be like, you removed all the bones from my arm. I don't want to be anywhere near you.
Speaker: You are not a wizard. Um, so Harry dresses, gets dressed and he hurries off to the Gryffindor tower to tell Ron and Hermione all about Colin and Dobby and he can't, he can't find them. And so he's kind of walking around trying to figure out where they are. And, um,
Speaker: they find themselves Harry um goes into Moaning Myrtle's bathroom where Ron and Hermione where they yeah they're in there um they're in a lock stall which just hiding out casually hiding out in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom typical sunday um here ah Hermione asks him how he is and they decide and Ron explains that they're gonna get started on the Polyjuice Potion and that they're gonna hide it in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom which okay I guess if you can't find anywhere else that's the best possible place maybe um and they also let's see um Harry tells them all about how Dobby came to visit him in the middle of the night and he then tells them about how like
Speaker: He was told that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened before and Ron immediately goes, this settles it. Lucius Malfoy must have opened the chamber when he was at school here and now he's told dear old Draco how to do it. Ron's like, the pieces are falling into place. I've got it this time.
Speaker: aye but Ron's actively us trying to predict when the reputation is going to come out. Yes, he is the OG Swifty. He's just always clowning himself. Yep. Um, so they're trying to figure out um, so he's explaining about Harry's, they're talking about how um, Dobby was stopped then from getting on the train and and all that stuff and broke you pretty much broke his arm and
Speaker: Now at this point the news that Colin Crevie has been attacked was now all throughout the school and everybody's talking about it. Um and Jenny who is absolutely distraught again. Distraught! And Fred and George are trying to be good brothers and trying to tear up but cheer her up but they're It's not the right way to do it. um They're like jumping out at her from behind statues, which we get what you're trying to do, but also it's not working. You're going about this the wrong way. um It is now, fast forward a little bit. We're now into December.
Speaker: um and McGonagall's going around trying to figure out who's going to be staying at Christmas and Harry, Ron, and Hermione also signed the list and they also heard that Malfoy was staying which immediately strikes all of them as being very suspicious. Again we're compiling that evidence people and so that's when they decided this would be now be the perfect time to use the Polyjuice compo - Polyjuice potion and try and get a confession. Later that later um they're talking about how all the stuff they need to get from the potions from the potions room and how they're gonna have to steal it which of all the professors you have to steal from you have to steal from professor shape it's not gonna work and so they're trying to figure out how exactly they're gonna do this um so when they get into potions into the potions class harry decides to do a bright idea
Speaker: and try and distract Snape um by using a firework and he lobs it into the air and it goes into Goyle's potion cauldron and causes his potion to explode and showering the whole class which This is such James Potter attitude. I don't know what else to say. Um, obviously Snape is royally ticked at this and, um,
Speaker: so class and the class is, um, in thrown into full chaos and s Snape is threatening who I will find out who did this and they will be expelled, which,
Speaker: We know it. and And Harry turns around and looks and no pretty much sure he's positive that Snape knows it was him. He's just got an eye for it. Any distraction that happens in that class, Snape's gonna be like, it's you. I know it's you.
Speaker: um Um... And so... A week later, um, they are, the golden trio are walking around and they notice a small group of people gathered around a notice board and they're seeing a, um, that there has been a dueling club that has been started and that the first meeting is that night. So they all decide to go and they go and, um,
Speaker: When they get in there, they see that it is Gilderoy Lockhart and Professor Snape. So, Lockhart's talking about how Dumbledore gave him permission to start the Stooling Club to train them all in case they ever need to defend themselves. And Snape is his assistant, which I'm sure Snape loves that.
Speaker: but alsoll see a long game But also, I'm like, I'm pretty sure the only reason probably Snape agreed to do this, just so that he can kick Lockhart's butt. And he's playing the long game. Yep. um So they decide to gilderoy Lockhart's like, umm y'all you all will still have your potions mastered by the time I'm done with him. And Snape's I'm pretty sure like, I'm sure. I'm not the one you need to worry about.
Speaker: um So um these two decide to put on a little bit of a demonstration first and um Snape immediately throws out an Expelliarmus spell which knocks Lockhart off his feet and into the wall. Being aggressive, this is where he gets his anger issues out.
Speaker: um and all the Slytherins cheer at this and Hermione's so concerned about Lockhart and Harry and Ron are like who cares. After that little demonstration they're kind of all um put into pairs to duel together and um Malfoy and Potter are paired up together.
Speaker: great combo. This is gonna go so well. um So Malfoy and Harry face each other and um Harry a knocks Malfoy out, um knocks him back to his knees and as in form of retaliation they decide Draco decides to cast a spell that throws out a snake. Lovely.
Speaker: ah
Speaker: so um Snape is like, don't worry about it Potter, I'll get rid of it. But then Lockhart intervenes and says, I will actually get rid of it. And instead of getting rid of the snake, it actually um flies into the air and then falls back onto the floor and it ends up just making the snake more mad. And it tries to go after Justin Finch Fletchley, but um almost as Harry didn't really know he was doing it, he kind of steps forward and he shouts at the snake, leave him alone and the snake slumps to the floor.
Speaker: Foreshadowing. Harry is speaking to the snake um and he looks up at Justin trying saying like oh maybe he'll finally not be afraid of me but instead Justin yells at him, what do you think you're playing at? And Storm's out of there. And eventually Snape steps forward and makes the snake disappear. And he's also looking at Harry with the like, ah very, and eat like, you just talked to a snake?
Speaker: Oh boy, you know Snape's jealous though. Oh yeah, 100%. He's probably like, of all people that can speak to snakes, why you? Why not me? Why not me? um Why not literally any of my Slytherin students?
Speaker: oh
Speaker: So, Ron um eventually comes in and steers Harry out of there along with Hermione and Once they get back into the Gryffindor Carmen room, Ron immediately is like, why didn't you tell us that you were a parcel mouth? Which is basically you can speak to snakes. Um, and Harry tells the story that how this is the only second time he's done it. And he tells them the story about how he accidentally set a boa constrictor on Dudley at the zoo and like in the first book. And that was before he knew he was a wizard and
Speaker: Ron is like, you can speak to snakes. And and Harry's like, I'm sure lots of people can do it. And Ron's like, no, they can't. It's not, it's not a very common gift that is not good, Harry. Not good at all. And they were talking about, he just keeps talking about like how you completely spoke a different language.
Speaker: something' something's wrong with you Harry and Harry is not helping because um or no excuse me and Hermione is talking about like and Hermione eventually reveals like this is pretty important because being able to talk to snakes was what Salazar Slytherin was famous for that's why the Slytherin symbol is literally a serpent And Ron intervenes and he's like, and now the whole school is going to think you are his great, great, great grandson. And Harry's like, but I'm not. And Hermione's like, that's gonna be very hard to prove because once again, people Hogwarts will believe literally anything. You start that one rumor, it's gonna go everywhere.
Speaker: So it's later that night and Harry cannot fall asleep because he is thinking about like could he actually be a descendant of Salazar Slytherin? He doesn't really know anything about his father's family at all. I mean Dursleys literally told them quite nothing.
Speaker: um And he is just once again having another - this is the book where Harry has the most crises with his life. I don't know.
Speaker: I would say that Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows, Half -Blood Prince, it only gets darker from here. He continues, he has more crises as the books go on. like I would say, I don't know, Order of the Phoenix gets pretty rough when he's straight up screaming at Dumbledore.
Speaker: um
Speaker: yeah yeah i would say we're the phoenix because he's also dealing with Cedric yeah all right okay so it's the next morning and Harry is it's just a very gloom gloom and doom day um and everybody is talking about how um what happened in the dueling club and Harry is walking around and he hears some group of Hufflepuffs talking bad about him, which as they should.
Speaker: oh And so they're talking about how they think Potter is there could be the heir of Slytherin and how... um Listen, one thing you need to know about us Hufflepuffs, gossip queens. Yup.
Speaker: um But anyways, Harry is just listening to all this and finally decides he can't take it anymore and steps out from behind the bookshelves. um And all of them are horrified and he Harry is looking for Justin and they and he wants to explain to him about what happened in the dueling club and and they are just not having any of it but they were like you caused it to attack him all that stuff and at this point Harry um everybody's gonna gang up on you there's no point in trying to defend yourself at this point because no one's gonna believe you um
Speaker: And he talks about like how, Oh, well we heard that you hated the muggles you lived with. And Harry's like, well, it's kind of possible, not possible to live with the Dursleys and not hate them, which valid. fair Um, and he eventually storms out of the library and eventually winds up knocking into Hagrid. Um, he's asking, Harry's asking Hagrid what he's doing in here and Hagrid holds up a limp rooster and how Some, this is the second one that's been killed and he needs a charm to put around the coop because otherwise they're just gonna keep dying. Foreshadowing. I wonder who it could be. Yeah, I all but wonder. So, um, Haggar keeps asking Harry if he's all right. He's looking a little bit bothered and Harry's like, I'm fine. I gotta get going. So he leaves and
Speaker: Harry is going up the stairs when he trips over something and on the floor he looks down and sees that it is in fact Justin Finch Fletchley who has been petrified.
Speaker: um And also beside him is nearly Headless Nick who has also been attacked. um Harry is horrified by this and then here comes Peeves out of nowhere and starts screaming attack, attack, another attack. No mortal or ghost is safe. Run for your lives. Attack. He is the, he is the Hogwarts alarm system. He's the, the hometown hysteric. The Hogwarts hysteric. Bless him.
Speaker: Um, people are flying into the door after door is opening and people are flooding into the corridor. Ms. Professor McGonagall comes running. Um, and everyone's immediately like, you've been caught in the act, Harry. Once again, poor Harry. Wrong place, wrong time. Um, and so McGonagall is like, that's enough. Um,
Speaker: And once again, Peaves is loving the chaos. He's like, ooh, what have you done, Potter? do You think this is all fun and games? You're gonna get in trouble? I also just love that they they have so much confidence in the fact that Harry's so dumb, he's gotten caught every single time. But how is he not getting caught in the act? So what do they think's happening? Do they think he's like, ha ha, I've done it.
Speaker: Alert everyone. Like, what do they think? Obviously. If he had done it, wouldn't if he have left afterwards? Oh, who knows. So, Professor McGonagall is like, that is enough, peeves. They carry Justin away into the hospital wing and everyone goes back to doing what they're doing and that leaves Harry and McGonagall alone in the hallway.
Speaker: um McGonagall is like, let's go this way, Potter. Harry's like, I didn't do it and McGonagall's like, I understand but this is out of my hands. I can't, I can't do anything. So, um, they march around the corner and they go up, stop in front of a stone gargoyle. She says the password, lemon drop. and li Lemon Drop and the griff the Gryffindor. um The Gargoyle moves and reveals a staircase. They head up and and they head up the stairs and Harry real is realizing where he is being taken. He's going to where Dumbledore lives.
Speaker: his office it's his office and that is how the chapter ends all righty so um there were no new first impressions this week um i think we pretty much met a mass majority of characters um at this point and so we'll move on to our chapter themes so Carmen what was your chapter theme My chapter themes were suspicions arise because I feel like most of these chapters were just people thinking that Harry was the reason. Yep. And yeah. And mine was um uncertainty because there's a lot of unknowns going on. We don't know who's attacking, who is attacking all these people, how it's being done. Is the chamber of secrets been open? How has it been open? Who opened the chamber of secrets? Like lots of questions going around. So.
Speaker: All right. um So for our question of the week this week, um we have, should Harry have told them about hearing the voices? Yes, he should have. Everything would have been solved much quicker. Dumbledore would have been like, you know what, sit down. I have a story to tell you. Maybe, you know, can't be too sure. But I think that things would have been solved a lot faster. I think the professors could have stepped in a little bit quicker.
Speaker: And maybe they could have put Ginny's life in less danger. Yeah. You know, the vibes. Yeah. I 100 % think Harry should have told them about the voices. Because again, this would have been solved a lot quicker. And I'm pretty sure if you would have told Dumbledore, he would have been like, huh. Interesting that you can hear it in its partial tongue. You know who else spoke partial tongue? The man who gave you that scar. Tom Riddle. Hmm.
Speaker: Speaking of Tom Reel, I was suspicious about him back in the day. Guess it was him. Okay, so the key to opening Chamber of Secrets. Probably Parseltongue. We're halfway there. We're halfway there. That's not to find the location, but. Yeah, but we would jump over a couple steps to get there. All right, so I also love too that like literally all they had to do was ask Monique Myrtle how she was killed.
Speaker: Yes. So Moaning Myrtle, how exactly did you die? And then they could have figured it out even quicker. Yep. Bro. For our Hogwarts house poll, um still the same eight votes, three Hufflepuff's, two Gryffindors, two Ravenclaws, and one Slytherin.
Speaker: um Next week, we are going to be doing chapters 12 through 15. That will be Carmen's episode lead. Whoop, whoop. Yes. um But be sure to follow the podcast and rate us five stars. Also, be sure to follow us on Instagram at Family Fiction Pod where you can answer our question of the week and vote on your house, which Hogwarts house you are in. Yep. All right. Thank you guys so much for listening and we will see you next week with chapters 12 through 15 of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Bye.
Speaker: This is family fiction
