We'll get started with the discussion, but before we do that, um we'll do our currently reading. hall So my current read is Carival by Stephanie Garber. I've been wanting to read this trilogy for a while and I'm finally deciding to do It's pretty interesting so far.

Chapter 18: Revelations and Marauders' Past

Okie dokie. So, um, starting our discussion today, we have chapter 18, Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs.

Uh, the trio thinks that they've all gone mad, um If you recall, last week's, or last episode, ended with, you know, Sirius and Lupin trying to tell Harry, like, you know, Sirius is innocent.

Peter's the one who betrayed James and Lily, and he's right there. He's Ron's rat. And that is pretty much how he ended it. And now everyone thinks that they're crazy, because how could Scabbers be Peter?

um Harry says that Sirius killed Peter. Not the other way around. And Sirius says that he meant to, but Peter got away. And then he tries to hurl himself at Scabbard's, but Remus holds him back and tells Sirius he needs to explain the full truth.

Sirius agrees and says he wants to commit the murder he was imprisoned for. Yeesh. Alright, Sirius. ah Scavers tries to fight to get free, but Ron holds tight and tries to leave, but Remus tells him he needs to stay and places him back on the bed.

And if you recall, Ron has a broken leg, so he can't go far. Remus says that he believed Sirius had killed Peter until tonight when he saw Peter on the map. Map.

Hermione says it can't be true because people would know that he's an Animagus because there's a register with the ministry and she had checked and there was only 17 people and she knows that they were not on it.

Remus says she's right, but there used to be three total unregistered Animagi. Sirius rushes Remus along telling him to hurry up and they all hear a loud crack in the hall, but when they look out, it's empty. LOL.

haunted. Well, it's Snape. Yeah. Disapparating in. Remus says... wait. Ron mentions it being haunted at the Shrieking Shack, and Remus says it's not, and the screams and howls were always him.

He was bitten and used to hide here in the full moon. um Snape's wolf's pain potion made him docile once a month, and he was able to curl up in his office and sleep the night away.

The willow was planted for Remus to come so he could get to the tunnel, and the tree would keep people away. He used to bite and scratch himself, which made him scream. Which I then put, poor baby.

he went through the wringer. reading this chapter after finishing all the young dudes hits a little different okay thanks um albus aided the haunted rumor to keep people away from the shrieking shack and remus had hid his secret from sirius james and peter but they eventually found out and it took them three years to learn but they eventually became anime guys so they could keep him company They would use the invisibility cloak to sneak out, and Peter would turn into a rat to be able to scurry up and hit the knot in the tree.

Sirius tells him to hurry up once again, and Remus says they used to roam the grounds at night. They made the map and signed it with their nicknames, and Harry tries to think what the nicknames mean and what animals they turned into, and is trying to figure out what James was.

Remus felt guilty that they were all breaking the safety guides Albus laid for him, LOL, glad you gave Harry that speech earlier and hypocrite. Remus thought Sirius was using dark magic all this time Remus tells Sirius that Snape is teaching at the school.

Snape has been telling Albus that Remus wasn't fit to be a teacher and Remus mentions the trick that they pulled on Severus. Sirius says that he deserved it.

And this is a prime example of Sirius not being very mature for his age. Man child. Snape had followed Pomfrey and Remus one day and Sirius told him about the knot in the trunk.

James chased him down, but Snape saw Remus at the end of the tunnel, and Harry says that's why Snape doesn't like him. Snape then appears from under the invisibility cloak, his wand pointed at Remus, and says, that's correct.

gentlemen Chapter 19, The Servant of Lord Voldemort. Hermione screams, and Sirius jumps up. Snape says he found the cloak outside on the ground and Snape had went to Remus' office to give him his potion for the night because he forgot to take it and saw the map with them in the shack.

Remus says he's wrong, but Snape says he'll turn Remus in with Sirius.

Snape binds Remus with a spell and Sirius lunges and Snape aims at him saying the one line that everyone knows, give me a reason, I beg you.

Hermione tells Snape to hear what they have to say, and Snape tells them they don't understand these things. They're just children. Sirius says as long as they take Scabbers to the castle, he'll come along quietly.

Snape says he'll call for the Dementors. Why bother going to the castle? Sirius begs for him to hear him out, but Snape tells them to come along. Which, honestly, I can't blame him when Sirius has only ever been crap to him. Like, why would you believe him?

um Harry blocks the door and says that Remus could have killed him loads of times already, so why would he try now? He calls Snape pathetic to hold a grudge over a school prank.

Snape says he's as bad as his father, and Harry uses Expelliarmus and then notices that Ron and Hermione had done the same, which sends Snape flying across the room and knocked unconscious.

And then Hermione makes the, we just attacked a teacher! remark. Harry frees Remus from the ropes that were binding him, and Remus asks for scabbers again. Ron asks how Sirius would know that he's the rat they're looking for, and Remus questions this as well.

Sirius pulls out the picture of Ron's family with scabbers from Egypt and says he noticed the missing finger, and Sirius says Peter cut it off himself before he transformed, and when Sirius cornered him that night, he blew apart the street with a wand behind his back, killing everyone within 20 feet.

Remus says he's 12 years old and has lived longer than he should. The rap. Meaning. um Ron says that they took very good care of him and that's why he's lived as long as he has.

And Remus mentions he's probably been losing weight ever since he heard Sirius was on the loose. Ron says it was Crookshanks that was driving him to, you know, the the impoverished stage he was in.

And Harry notes internally that it's been before that that he was getting skinny and scraggly. Sirius says that Crookshanks has been helping him. He knew that Scabbers wasn't a rat and that they could communicate when he was a dog.

Crookshanks tried to bring Peter to him, but he couldn't get him, so he stole the passwords for Sirius to get in. Peter found out and ran and bit himself to leave blood and fake his death.

Harry asks if he knew Sirius was about to kill him, like he killed his parents, and Sirius says he's here to finish the job. Remus says that Peter betrayed them, not Sirius, and Sirius admits that he wasn't the secret keeper.

He persuaded them to choose Peter, and so he feels just as guilty because he's the one who chose Peter. He went to check on Peter that night but couldn't find him, and he went straight to James and Lily's and found the house destroyed.

He realized then that Peter had betrayed them. Remus asks for Scabbers again and says he'll force him to reveal himself.
Time Turner Adventure and Its Impact

Sirius and Remus point their wands at Scabbers and he turns into, nonetheless, Peter Pettigrew.

Peter's eyes keep darting to the door and Remus says they've been chatting about what happened that night. Peter tries begging for his life multiple times saying that Sirius tried to kill him and that he killed Lily and James. And please Remus help me.

Peter knew he would break out one day. knew that Sirius would break out and come for him. And as Sirius uses Voldemort's name and Peter flinches. And Sirius gives him a hard time about flinching from the name of the person he betrayed everyone for and says he's not been hiding from Sirius. He's been hiding from Voldemort's followers.

He says they all think that Peter's dead, but they would come after him if they knew. And Sirius brings up the fact that most of Voldemort's old followers claimed that they were under Confundus charm and didn't know what they were doing.

And so if Voldemort's true followers found out that Peter had been hiding instead of going to Azkaban like the other proud supporters, they'd be hunting him down like they did the others.

Um, Sirius says that Peter was a spy for Voldemort, and he always found friends who could protect him, always making friends with the biggest bully in the schoolyard. Hermione questions why Scabbers never tried to hurt Harry, and Sirius says he never did anything that didn't serve him.

Since Voldemort wasn't alive, there was no advantage to hurting Harry. He'd rather turn Harry in. Hermione asks how Sirius got out. And Sirius says he knew he was innocent, and since it wasn't a happy thought that he was innocently put away, they couldn't feed off of him. Because they eat happy memories.

um He could turn into a dog, and they could read his emotions as a dog, and probably thought he was going mad. Harry remembers the words people said Sirius kept muttering about he's at Hogwarts and realizes they he was talking about Peter.

um He says that when they brought him food one night to his cell, he slipped by them as a dog. And he tells Harry he flies like his father and says he would have rather died than betray James and Lily, telling Harry that he was at the Quidditch field that day.

Harry believes him and Peter begs for his life once more. Sirius says they didn't tell Remus because they thought he was the spy. Which, if you've read all the young dudes, that kind of adds up because there is moments where, like, Remus has to go undercover to go with, um...

God, I forgot his name. The guy that bit Remus. I can't think of his name right now. Greyback. He has to go undercover with Greyback. And so it would make sense that they would think he was a spy if he was undercover a lot. There was a whole thing and all the young dudes. I won't spoil it for anybody.

Oh, Ron. And Hermione's. And then Peter goes at Hermione's feet begging for her help and she backs away. Peter says Harry looks just like his father and Sirius yells at Peter for talking to Harry.

and b How dare you speak to Harry Potter like that? Peter says he was scared and that Voldemort forced him to tell him where they were and Sirius says he was passing him info for over a year and knows better than that.

Sirius said he should have died rather than betray his friends, and when he goes to kill Peter, with Remus also aiming his wand at him, Harry runs in front of Peter and says they'll hand him over to the Dementors, where he deserves to go to Azkaban and have his soul sucked.

He says James wouldn't want them to become killers for Peter. Harry says he'll go to Azkaban and Remus binds Peter up a gring. Remus straps Ron's leg up in a splint and Hermione asks what they should do about Severus.

Remus says they'll levitate him out and Remus and Ron link themselves to Peter as a precaution. And that's how we end chapter 19. Any thoughts on 18 and 19? Lots of...

So I felt like ah ah when I was reading these chapters, I feel like i'm reading a soap opera. There's so much stuff going on. There's a lot of info dump without really giving us everything. And it's hard sometimes when we do these chapter discussions to put myself in the brain of, like, someone who doesn't know the full story with the Marauders and everything. Because we get more of it in Order the Phoenix.

of what happened with the um the treatment of Snape and everything. but But think this was a really good lore dump on the Marauders and their dynamics and, like, what life was like. And it definitely seems like Sirius was the bad influence on everybody.

Alright, chapter 20. The Dementors kiss. Crookshanks leads the way out and they struggle to the tunnel with extra people. ah Sirius tells Harry that he's his guardian and his if his name gets cleared, he can come live with him.

LOL. Clouds shift and the full moon appears. Uh And they all realize Lupin hasn't taken his potion tonight. um He begins to shift and Sirius tells them to run.

um Lupin transforms as well as Sirius transforms into a wolf and they take off running into the woods. um Which I will say this is probably my favorite thing they changed from the book to the movie is getting to see this play out because in the book you just kind of see lupin transforming then he takes off and that's about it in the movie you get like lupin as a werewolf like doing crazy things so don't know um peter and ron struggle for lupin's fallen wand and peter transforms and scurries off

um In the process, Peter had hexed Ron with an unknown spell, um and Sirius and Remus struggle some more. um They run off into the woods, and when Harry and Hermione go to check on Ron, they don't know what's happened to him. He's stunned, but he can't move.

um And then they hear Sirius whining and run after him. ah Harry and Hermione find him at the lake and find Sirius laying under a mound of demon doors surrounding him, and they're going in for the kiss.

Harry fights to use the Patronus, but it keeps failing. He tries over and over and feels himself start to black out until the nearest Dementor comes over to him and lowers its hood, going in for a kiss.

Another attack's Sirius, and Harry suddenly sees a bright light, and the Dementors flee. Harry sees a Patronus in the distance and sees a familiar figure behind it, thinks it can't possibly be who he thinks it is, and passes out.

And we all find out who that figure is in just a minute. Harry. ah yeah He's always passing out. Chapter 21. uh the minister hermione's secret is the name of the chapter uh the minister is congratulating snape um harry's awake but he isn't moving he's trying to overhear what's going on uh snape and fudge are outside the door having a discussion snape is telling sirius that he uh telling him that sirius tricked them into believing his story

and says they must have used the compundus charm. Snape talks crap about Harry and his special treatments that he's always getting from the staff, and the minister defends that Harry is a special circumstance.

Shout out. Snape says he doesn't know what fled the Dementors away, and um... Harry realizes that they had attacked Hermione too as he looks over and Hermione is also in a hospital bed.

um He sees Hermione and Ron both in beds. Ron is still out but Hermione is eyes open looking at Harry telling him to be quiet as she's listening in too.

Madame Pomfrey brings both of them chocolate and she says Sirius is locked away and will get the kiss any moment now. The minister bursts in and Harry argues that Sirius is innocent.

Hermione joins in the argument and even mentions Peter Pettigrew. Snape says they were both confunded and the minister says that Sirius has already told them the same story. Snape says he never saw Peter Pettigrew in the shack and thinks that they're lying.

Harry says that's when he was unconscious and Albus comes in then and asks for everyone to leave except for Harry and Hermione. He wants to speak with them alone. After some struggling with Snape and Madame Pomfrey to get them out, they are eventually alone.

Snape tried to argue that mentioning ah are you against Harry's story by mentioning that Sirius tried to kill him too back in the day. Why wouldn't he kill somebody now and leaves?

Albus says there is not proof for Sirius and says they are running out of time. He tells Harry that Sirius has not acted like an innocent person, which is true.

And Harry is very disappointed as he expected Albus to solve the day. Albus says they need more time, emphasis on time, and tells them where Sirius is and says that if they're quick about it, they could save more than one innocent life, but that they mustn't be seen.

He tells them he'll lock them in and then before closing the door, tells Hermione three turns should do the trick and good luck, and then he leaves. Harry is very confused as what's going on, and Hermione tells him to come over to her and wraps the chain of a long necklace around both of them and turns the hourglass that's on the end of it three times.
Sirius' Escape and Lupin's Resignation

Harry feels a whir of motion around him, and then they now stand in the empty hospital entrance. They hide in a closet, and Hermione says they've gone back in time.

They hear their past selves going towards Hagrid's, and Harry thinks that he's gone mad. Hermione says that McGonagall gave it to her, and that they got permission from the Ministry for her to use it, and that it's how she's been getting to all of her classes.

um They're wondering at why they went back this far, but then Harry remembers what Alba said about more than one life, and says they can save Buckbeak as well, and then they can use Buckbeak to get Sirius and the Tower.

They head out towards Hagrid's and they hide by going the long way around. um They sneak up to Hagrid's hut and watch themselves enter the entrance. um And Harry says, this is the weirdest thing we've ever done.

Which I would agree. Hermione says they have to wait so the minister can see Buckbeak, otherwise he'll think that Hagrid's just helped him flee. Harry mentions going in to get Peter, and Hermione says they can't be seen because if Harry saw himself burst in, he'd think he'd gone mad.

um They see the minister and the executioner come, and the trio leave out the back of Hagrid's hut. Harry runs over and grabs Buckbeak. After struggling with him to get him to move, um they all head into the forest, and they hear the others looking for Buckbeak as they exit Hagrid's hut.

Albus doesn't sound bothered and wants a drink of brandy. Very... Is he ever bothered about anything? I think he just knew what his plan was going to be.

ah Secretive. They decide to hang out in the forest until the rest happens. um And they move to where they can see the Whomping Willow.

They watch the earlier events play out, seeing everyone enter the tree. Harry wants to run and grab the cloak, but Hermione won't let him. I don't know why he couldn't have used Accio cloak.

We'll never know. um Hermione wonders at what happened to save them from the Dementors, and Harry says it was a Patronus and says he thought it was his dad that he saw.

Hermione expresses that it couldn't have been him, and they wait in silence until they see everyone exit the tree. Harry says they have to move since Lupin is going to transform and run right at them into the forest, and they flee to Hagrid's hut.

Harry says they have to go to the lake so he can see what went down, and he stands waiting for his dad to appear. He sees himself across the lake with his spell failing, and no one comes, and he sees them all getting attacked.

Harry realizes then that he had not seen his dad, but himself, and he uses the spell, and it works. He realizes that his Patronus is a stag, it bows, and he sees the horns, and Harry realizes the meaning of his father's nickname, Prongs.

Harry tells Hermione that it was him all along and that because he knew he had done it before, he was able to do the spell. um They see Snape carrying them all away towards the castle and know that they have 45 minutes.

They wait and see McNair going to get the Dementors and then get on Buckbeak and fly up to the tower. They see Sirius and open the window. They get Sirius on Buckbeak and head up to the west tower and disembark.

They tell Sirius to run for it and Sirius flies away and says he'll see Harry again someday. Depression.

Chapter 22, Al Post again. They run back to the hospital wing and they hear the argument with Snape and the minister. They nearly miss Peeves in the process and run up to Albus before he can lock the door and he tells them well done.

He locks them in and they get back into their beds. Just then, Madame Pomfrey comes out and gives them more chocolate. They hear angry voices growing louder as it approaches the hospital wing.

Snape, Fudge, and Albus all burst in, Albus looking unbothered. Snape accuses Harry of helping Sirius escape, and Pomfrey and Albus argue they've been here the whole time. How could they have done such a thing?

Snape leaves, and Fudge says the mentors will be sent away since they attacked two students, and he says perhaps we should post dragons at the entrance. Albus brightens up and says Hagrid would love that.

let's replace one one dangerous thing with another. Ron wakes up and is very confused as what's happened and um the trio fill him in. When the trio leaves the next day, um everyone is at Hogsmeade, so the castle is empty.

They sit at the lake, and Hagrid comes up and tells them that Buckbeak had escaped. He says Lupin didn't hurt anyone last night either, and Snape told everyone at the school that he was a werewolf.

Snitch! And that Lupin is resigning. Harry goes to see Lupin and finds him in his office packing. He says he knows parents will be concerned, um and that Snape let it, quote-unquote, slip that he was a werewolf.

I'm sure he did. he says Albus told him about what happened and asked about and asks about Harry's Patronus. or Remus confirms that James was a stag when he was in Animagus.

And he gives Harry the cloak and map back and says that since he's a teacher, he can't keep these things. um He says Harry mentions that Remus had said the bakers of the map would want to lure him out for fun.

And Remus says that James would have wanted Harry to find all the secret passages. Albus tells him it's time to go and Lupin bids his goodbyes to Harry.

He um then sticks around and Albus asks Harry why he's upset. Harry says he saved an innocent man, or Albus says he saved an innocent man from a terrible fate.

And then Harry remembers parts of Trelawney's vision and asks if it was a real prediction. Albus says it was only the second real prediction she's ever made. And I'm wondering what was the first.
