Yanks go back to back in a rematch of last years World Series with the Giants. This would be the Yankees 6th championship in 15 years, and they would win it easy in 5 games.

Mac, Zach and Josh talk recent Yankee struggles and give you their All-Star selections (Mac did everything down to the reserves because why not).

The gang also answer their first question from a fan regarding league rule changes you would make if you were commissioner for a day!

Introduction and 1937 World Series Overview

00:00:03
Speaker
Well, as Smash Mouth once said, hey now, you're an all-star. What's up everybody? Welcome to our pre-all-star week announcement episode of Championship or a Bust. It is the 1937 World Series.
00:00:17
Speaker
We got Mac here. We got Josh here. We got Zach here. We have 1937 for you, and then we're going to break down the rosters piece by piece. I tried to convince them to do full rosters and account for one in each team, and they unfortunately we're in heaven tonight. Yeah, yeah.
00:00:31
Speaker
Yeah, you tried. and Yeah, you tried because we all have a life. Yeah, I don't know i have a life. Sorry. Yeah, no. Love summer vacation. is awesome It's awesome. Two months doing absolutely nothing. This is great.
00:00:43
Speaker
So we'll get to discuss that. um They are not allowed to clown me for any of my picks beyond the starters because that's all they put in the effort to do. um ah But we will turn it right on over to Josh for the 1937 portion of this podcast.
00:00:58
Speaker
Go ahead.
00:01:02
Speaker
You need help. anyway Anyway, 1937 World Series. New York Yankees against the New York Giants, a rematch of 1936. Yankees had a very similar record as the last year, going a hundred and two and fifty two winning the division by 13 games. And New York Giants went 95-57, a very respectable ah record, winning the National League by three games.

Key Games of the 1937 World Series

00:01:28
Speaker
So game one at Yankee Stadium was a battle of the Aces. Screw bowler Carl Hubble, a 22-game winner that year, took the mound for the Giants against Lefty Gomez, a 21-game winner for the Yankees. The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when Jimmy Ripple singled, went to third on a Johnny McCarthy single, and scored when Gus Mancuso hit into a double play.
00:01:47
Speaker
Hubble had everything going in this game until the wheels just absolutely fell off in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a walk and two singles loaded the bases, Joe DiMaggio singled in two runs. An intentional walk reloaded the bases for Bill Dickey, who had an RBI single.
00:02:02
Speaker
And after a fours out at home, George Selkirk singled in two more runs and chased Hubble from the game. An error on a ground ball played another run before two walks, one with the bases loaded, played the Yankees' seventh run in the inning.
00:02:14
Speaker
Tony Loziri would homer for the Yankees in the bottom of the eighth just for good measure. Lefty Gomez would finish the game giving up one run on six hits in the 8-1 victory for the Yankees. Game 2. sort of giant shipout to an early leadden thes top of a first thanks to a dick barelll double follow by me milllatt rbi single off of red roughing roughing pursued the ba down strike out the x three batters i cliff melton took the mound for the giants and kept the eggies off the scoreboard so the bottom of the fifth but myal hob doubled to lead off the inning before george sheelki and pitch a red ruffing fileed with rbi singles to make it two to one
00:02:46
Speaker
and chase bed from the game That might not have been the best idea, the Yankees started the bottom of the sixth with two singles off reliever Harry Gumbert that were followed by two RBI doubles from Selkirk and Ruffing again, making it 6-1. The Yankees would tack on two more in the seventh after single, a walk, and a Billy Dickey RBI single, and a Myra Hoag sack fly.
00:03:04
Speaker
Red Ruffing completed the game for the Yankees, giving up just the one run in the first inning, scattering seven hits and striking out eight. Oh yeah, he had three riess ah three RBIs of his own in this game. The Yankees winning game two, just like game one, eight to one Game three went to the pole grounds. Saw the Yankees strike first in the top the second inning on a total of zero RBI single.
00:03:25
Speaker
In third, Lou Gehrig would single and then score on a Bill Dickey RBI triple. Dickey then scored on a George Selkirk single to make a three nothing The Yankees would add another in the fourth on a Garrick sack fly and another in the fifth on a Marahoga RBI single following an error.
00:03:39
Speaker
The Giants would finally get on the board in the bottom seventh when Jimmy Ripple's single scored on Johnny McCarthy's RBI double. Monta Pearson tried to complete the game for the Yankees, but ran to trouble in the bottom of ninth after loading the bases with two outs and bringing the tying run to the plate.
00:03:53
Speaker
Johnny Murphy would come in and get the batter, Harry Danning, to fly out the center and end the game, killing the rally and putting the Yankees 1-1 away from being back-to-back champs. With their backs against the wall, the Giants sent Carl Hubble back to the mound for Game 4 at Polo Grounds, and the Yankees would get to him immediately when Red Rolfe started the game with a leadoff triple and scored on a Joe DiMaggio sack fly.
00:04:14
Speaker
The Giants, however, would finally break out the bats in the bottom of the second. Three consecutive singles started the inning to tie the game, for Hubble's fielder's choice gave the Giants a lead. Jojo Moore would single another run and chase Yankee pitcher Bump Hadley from the game.
00:04:28
Speaker
Ivy Andrews came in in relief and he didn't do much better. He immediately gave up an RBI single to Dick Bartell before looting the bases with a walk, giving up a Hank Lieber two-run single to make it Yankees would score run in the top of the third without getting a hit, scoring on three errors.
00:04:43
Speaker
And in the seventh, the Giants would push across another run on Harry Danning's RBI double. Lou Gehrig would homer in the top of the ninth, but it was too little too late. The Giants take the game 7-3 and force a game 5.
00:04:55
Speaker
And Game 5, so the Yankees open the scoring in the top of second thanks to a Mario Hoag homer, and then they'd add another in the third on a Joe DiMaggio homer. Now lot would match him, hitting a two-run homer of his own in the bottom of the third to tie the game.
00:05:06
Speaker
In the top of the fifth, Yankees would score twice on a Tony Aziri triple, followed by the pitcher Gomez hitting an RBI single and scoring and scoring on Lou Gehrig's RBI double. Despite having 10 hits, the Giants only managed score on that Melod homer, with the Yankees taking Game 5 4-2 and winning the World Series four games to one.
00:05:24
Speaker
This was the first World Series in which a team did not commit a single error. The Yankees had a clean sheet. Congratulations. I can't believe it. That is not the case now.
00:05:36
Speaker
That is not the case now. Andy Volpe and Jazz Chisholm would ruin that about anything. Absolutely. So I was actually looking through um when it comes to some of the non-Hall of Famers that were coming up in Josh's monologue there and found the legend score really quick for some of them, the max score.
00:05:59
Speaker
so Red Rolf, 110. Jojo Moore, 100. George 75. McHugh, 63. Harry Danning, 56. And Dick Bartell, 40.
00:06:06
Speaker
harry danning fifty six and dick bartel forty So as you were running through them, like, let me find out where they would all be at. So Red Rolf

Current Events and Historical References

00:06:13
Speaker
and Jojo Moore could have some legitimate issue Hall of Famer discussions maybe down the line.
00:06:18
Speaker
We won't do that today, though. Moving into our what? ah I said thank God. Sorry to We should absolutely have Hall of Fame discussions about these guys. Just like I think it's ah it's a shame we haven't even mentioned as we're recording this on July 1st that it's Happy Bobby Bonilla Day.
00:06:34
Speaker
Yay. It is Bobby Benia Day. The problem is by the time you send this out, it'll be August 15th. Oh, my God. That's a good point. Yeah, that's good point. The All-Star game will have come and passed, and we'll be talking about playoffs already.
00:06:46
Speaker
Yep. So moving into the Giants, Bill Terry. his third appearance as a manager, it's the first time without also being a player.
00:06:57
Speaker
And he's one and two as a manager. As a player, he was a level one 16 first baseman between Freddie Freeman and Joey Votto with a max score of 184. Carl Hubble. carl hubble Had a rough series, as you heard, but finished third in MVP voting and led the league in wins this season. This was his age 34 season.
00:07:15
Speaker
ah It's third in final World Series is appearance, so we're no longer hearing about Mr. Hubble. finished with one ring. Went 1-1 with a 3.77 ERA, which doesn't sound too bad in today's world, but rough then.
00:07:27
Speaker
He had six earned runs in 14 and a third innings with a strikeout-to-walk ratio. Just reminder the ranking, level 4, 19th starting pitcher between Justin Verlander and Whitey Ford with a max score of 347. So firmly a lock, Hall of Famer.
00:07:42
Speaker
Mel Ott finished seventh in MVP voting, led league in home runs and walks the season. It's his also third and final appearance. So thank you for your services, Mr. Ott. Finishes with one ring, went four for 20 in the series. So the home run was notable, but not much else. um He was level four, number six right field between Tony Gwynn and Reggie Jackson with a max score of 555.
00:08:04
Speaker
That's it for the Giants. Moving on the Yankees. Joe McCarthy. Fourth appearance, third title. He's still the number two manager of all time. Nothing has changed since last year's pod.
00:08:16
Speaker
Bill Dickey, fifth place in MVP voting that year. ah Third World Series appearance, third ring. He went four for 19. So you heard his name quite a bit, but it was pretty rough outside of a couple of good instances. He did have a triple, is interesting for a catcher to have a triple, but cool. ah Level one, number nine catcher between Carlton Fisk and Mickey Cochran with a max score 238.
00:08:38
Speaker
Joe DiMaggio, second appearance, second ring, 6-for-22 with a home run, four runs batted in, ah so 273 average, finished second in MVP voting this year and led the league in war.
00:08:49
Speaker
He's level 5, number 4 center fielder between Trish Speaker and Mickey Mantle with a max score of 789.
00:08:57
Speaker
Lou Gehrig, the fourth place MVP voter that year. A lot of MVP finishers in this series here. Sixth appearance, fifth ring, hit 294, went 5-for-17 with a home run, a triple, a double, three runs batted in, and five walks.
00:09:10
Speaker
The number one first baseman of all time has a max score of 696.
00:09:15
Speaker
And that's not all, we have the ninth place finisher in MVP voting, Lefty Gomez. He led the league in wins in ERA. It's third appearance, his third ring. Went 2-0 with a 1.5 ERA. Only gave up three earned runs in two complete games.
00:09:28
Speaker
um Had an 8-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He is the level one, number 50 starting pitcher between Don Drysdale, who we're getting pretty close to talking about, and Bob Lemon with a max score 267.
00:09:40
Speaker
Tony Lazeri, sixth appearance, fifth ring, six for 15, with a 400 batting average and a 1.26 OPS. Had a home run, a triple, two runs batted in. I miss when we got to hear a lot about triples.
00:09:53
Speaker
There's actually a lot of triples in this series. Level 1, number 16, second base between Nelly Fox and Billy Herman with a max score of 109. And last but not least, we have Red Ruffing, the unanimous baseman Hall of Famer.
00:10:05
Speaker
ah His third appearance with third ring went 1-0 with one and run and one complete game, strikeout-to-walk ratio with a max score of 183. Now, before we move into the current events, um because we talked quite a bit about OffPod, about our all-star rosters and all that,
00:10:24
Speaker
And I think it's only right to kind of cover where the max score would go some of these guys where those implications come in. So since we've last recorded, because again, we're recording this at the time where we're waiting for the starter battle to finish.
00:10:40
Speaker
So for those of you that don't know, we have the top vote-getters in the AL and NL, Aaron Judge and Shohei Itani, became All-Stars. And now we have one two people at each position and four people in the AL outfield competing for one spot as a starter.
00:10:58
Speaker
And then it starts all over again for reserves. um But since Aaron Judge and Shohei Otani are officially All-Stars, they've both added 10 points to their score. So this is actually significant because Aaron Judge has officially reached 300 points, which every single eligible person with no steroid ties and isn't Pete Rose has made the Hall of Fame with 300. And Shohei Otani has reached 400.
00:11:24
Speaker
four hundred So Otani is now welcomed into the Legends Club. of the world of mech so congratulations to both of them there's a lot of implications that can happen this week uh mookie bets if he makes it will be 10 away from the legends tier so basically he would just need like a top five mvp finish cory seager will be one point away from the likely tier if he makes the all-star team and then five people can enter the conversation by making the all-star team hitting 100 fernando tatis jr
00:11:56
Speaker
Jordan Alvarez, Chris Bryant, which he played 11 games, is not happening. Don't even try to put him on your roster. Emmanuel Classe and Josh Hader. So a lot can happen in the next week or so in max score land.
00:12:10
Speaker
And I'll turn it over to Zach to start up all our slow rosters. Well, I know Sher mentioned it was Bobby Bonilla Day. ah just if Unfortunately, just a few days ago, Dave Parker did pass away at the age of 74 after a long battle with Parkinson's.
00:12:27
Speaker
Rip. Yeah. 19-year career. we went over this guy a few times on the pod already, mostly with the Pirates. He did just get elected to the whole, think, this year.
00:12:39
Speaker
Thanks a lot, guys. Yeah. 30 years. really sad and passed with just under three weeks to go or four weeks, just a month from the induction ceremony. Um, so really, really sad to hear that.
00:12:52
Speaker
Yeah. It's a shame. Now it obviously it's a shame. I just want to hit one thing quick with this for all the people that were waxing poetic about how great it was that he made the hall of fame while he has Parkinson's a few months before his death.
00:13:12
Speaker
How many of those people weren't voting for him when he was on the BBWA ballot? He made him wait this long, and this is what happens. And it's something that I've said several times on this pod.
00:13:23
Speaker
This happens way too often. And I understand they put him in while he was living, but they waited until he got Parkinson's to vote for him. I'm not blaming the people that are actually on this committee because a lot of them didn't have an opportunity vote.
00:13:35
Speaker
But I'm blaming the people that are like, oh, it's so great that he got elected before he died, but then didn't vote for him 30 years ago. This is what happens. If you're borderline on somebody and you have a spot on in your ballot, vote for him.
00:13:48
Speaker
This is why we do this. So now we get to sit and watch someone else make his speech for him. And everyone's going to be sad that he you know his plaque is there and they're honoring him, but he's not even there to enjoy it.
00:14:02
Speaker
Great job, baseball writers. Great job. Great job. You should be proud.

Off-Field Incidents and Legal Issues

00:14:06
Speaker
Very, very sad. Another screw-up. Yeah. Speaking about screw-ups, Wander Franco finally got sentenced.
00:14:16
Speaker
well'll We'll keep it real short. Guilty of sexual abuse. Only getting two years, though, which I found... quite insane the mom got 10 for you know i'm gonna we're not gonna mention a lot but the mom gets 10 years he got two which is just inexplicable to me but yeah
00:14:36
Speaker
i mean they they both should have gotten a lot longer agreed that's that's as far as i will really go with it And I know we mentioned Volpe and Wells earlier. Well, Volpe on pod. Sherm mentioned Wells off pod. So i just wanted to jump in before we talk all-stars.
00:14:54
Speaker
What is going on with these two guys?
00:14:58
Speaker
Oh, the Wells one got me because Wells was out of the lineup the other day because he's having an issue with his hand where he was saying that it would his his one of his fingers started feeling cold and numb. Uh-oh.
00:15:09
Speaker
And apparently they told him he has nerve damage. im Not nerve, sorry. Artery damage in his hand from catching too many balls. Is he the only catcher? I cannot make this up.
00:15:21
Speaker
David Combs about it during the game today and said his hand turned blue when it happened to him. And apparently Austin's hand turned blue as well. Yeah. Well, this has happened to baseball players before.
00:15:32
Speaker
Yeah, it's crazy. and she was like I don't know. That's insane. But it has happened before to some people who play baseball. um Yeah. no correct I don't know.
00:15:44
Speaker
But to answer your question about Volpe... Is he ever going to develop? Blast him into the sun. Is he ever going to be as good as he thought he was? No. It's time to cut bait. He sucks.
00:15:55
Speaker
He is a career 230 hitter that cannot field. And the fact that he won a gold glove is abysmal. It's crazy. Remember when he was untouchable in trade discussions? Yeah, oh wow. disgust point that out All these prospects, they're untradeable. They're untradeable. They're going to be great.
00:16:13
Speaker
Another Brian K. Masterclass. Right. Nah, dude, he sucks, and I'd rather I like him off the team. him He's very streaky hitter, and I don't know what happened to his fielding because it wasn't as bad last year.
00:16:24
Speaker
Is he on the bus now? He's driving it. east
00:16:31
Speaker
Nah, he's not driving it, but he's sitting passenger. Yeah, he's definitely on the he's definitely on the far for the four-person For our listeners who don't know, Josh I were at Yankee game, and we had a discussion. this was but Was this last year or two years ago? ah This was two or three years ago.
00:16:48
Speaker
We have mentioned on a pod once or twice, but I'm completely forgiven if you might have missed it. So we were discussing it. It was a Yankee-Ray game, and while we were getting angry at all the people walking up and down the aisles, we had a discussion about if we could have a four-person car or van and pick four people involved with the Yankee organization that could drive away and never be on the team again, who would it be? And where were they sitting? him up bla And where were they sitting in the car?
00:17:19
Speaker
Yeah, and where were they and where they were in the car. So we would say, oh, this person's in the back of it, this person's in front of it. Don't really know which one would be better or worse. I don't know. This was a while ago. This was a while ago because the conversation originated with with with Josh Donaldson.
00:17:32
Speaker
Yes. It was Josh Donaldson. Canton came up at the time. Boone and Cashman were in the conversation. Yes, boon Boone was strapped to the roof. Clay Holmes, I think, was in the conversation. There were a few that we discussed.
00:17:46
Speaker
And now Volpe is like front and center in this conversation. Yes, right. Passenger side. Boone is still strapped to the roof, though. Okay.
00:17:58
Speaker
Last one from me. We were just having this debate off pod. Mike likes to claim that he knew Cal Riley was going to be this good this year, and I just i just think you're you're lying. and you go Go back to the preseason preview pod. I mean, he did he did say Riley would have a good year. Thank you. I just you have a i just don't think anyone has the kind of year he's having.

Player Performances and Predictions

00:18:19
Speaker
I just don't think the guy is this good in reality. I don't know. Is he Probably not. No. But I predicted the Mariners, and I predicted Riley. i'm curious I'm curious to see how many home runs he ends up with at the end of the year. 42. would be funny, honestly. And I and i could absolutely see that happening.
00:18:39
Speaker
Me too. i I mean, listen, I didn't expect him to be this good. Don't get me wrong. But did I expect him to be the best hitting catcher in the league? Yeah, I did. That I did expect. Okay.
00:18:51
Speaker
I didn't expect him to be that much higher than everybody else. Big dumper. Gotta love Big Dumper. Gotta love Big Dumper. Such a crazy name, dude. Yeah, he signed a six-year $105 million dollars contract this March.
00:19:04
Speaker
That's a steal now. Look at them. They must love that. Good for Seattle. yeah yeah Yeah, I mean, we'll see if he ever hits above 250 again for his career. Right, right, right.
00:19:14
Speaker
All right, I'll hand it back over to Mr. Mack for the All-Stars since he decided to fill out a whole team.
00:19:22
Speaker
AL or NL first? AL first, AL first. All right, starters. A catcher. Mr. Cal Rowley. Should we do our own ballots first, or are we going position?
00:19:33
Speaker
Oh, let's go by position. I like that.
00:19:37
Speaker
So we'll do the starters. but Yeah, we'll we'll do our starters, and then you can do your bullshit. Okay. Sounds good to me. i'm I'm up then? Yeah, well, are we yeah, we'll just go one by one. I'm assuming we all have Cal Rowley starting for the AL catcher. Cal Rowley.
00:19:52
Speaker
We do have Cal Rowley. Catch him. Okay. First base American League. Who we got? Jonathan. you
00:20:01
Speaker
Black Guerrero. Sherm, did you got? Jonathan Aranda. I did originally have him. That's a good one. Spoiler alert, he's my reserve. Yeah, I went with Vladdy as well, but that's a good pick.
00:20:17
Speaker
Um, second base, it pains me to put Mr. Yeah. Glaber, I guess. well It's Glaber, but it's gross. It didn't feel good. Nope.
00:20:28
Speaker
I have Brandon Lau. Okay. Okay. ah Okay. okay I mean, it's, it's fine. Yeah. It's not like a protest of Glaber. not like a stats or better or anything, but you know, that's cool.
00:20:41
Speaker
Glaber has a higher war, better batting average. didn't look at war. I'm not even going to lie. I didn't look at war. You're a war apologist. I didn't look at it.
00:20:52
Speaker
um You're supposed to look at war. I didn't look at it. didn't look at it.
00:20:59
Speaker
Okay. Third base. I put Mr. Bregman here. He was having a really great year until he got hurt. J-Ram.
00:21:11
Speaker
J-Ram. I don't hate that at all. I had Bregman as my reserve as well. We know you love J-Ram. I'm stunned you didn't pick J-Ram. I do like J-Ram. I'm actually stunned. And what about it?
00:21:21
Speaker
and Nothing. That's why I can't believe didn't pick him. It's because I have a bias because Bregman's on my fantasy team this year, I guess. I don't know.
00:21:32
Speaker
Shortstop. Who do you got? Witt or Wilson? Wilson. Witt. I put Wilson. No. I put Wilson. yeah Wilson's by reserve. Witt does not deserve to be in the All-Star game.
00:21:46
Speaker
Terrible. Terrible season. Disgusting. Only batting 290 or whatever. Oh, terrible. Disgusting. Josh, I'm going to go with your war thing that you love so much. Witt's batting 290. Witt's war. Double Jacob Wilson.
00:21:57
Speaker
he's gotwar double jacob wilson No, what really? yeah Wilson doesn't hit home runs. I'm just proving how bad war is by your logic. 3.9 for Bobby Witt, 2.1 for Jacob Wilson.
00:22:10
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, that's why a Luis Arias hit like, you know, a gazillion and he had, you know, half a war, you know, it is what it is. We got Sherm dismantling war right in front of us. Y'all. I like that down. using this narrative to like die. Write this down. Yeah.
00:22:29
Speaker
But just wait until Chase Bully gets back. Like I said, I will defend war until it stops becoming useful. And right now, it's very useful to me. But if you're telling me that the guy batting.340 shouldn't be starting and and and in the All-Star game, i don't know what tell you.
00:22:45
Speaker
It's not a bad pick, don't get me wrong.
00:22:50
Speaker
i don't know I don't disagree. He had a bad month. And he's still hitting.340. yeah When it comes to starters, are like for me, all-star is all-star. I don't put much of a precedent of starter over reserve because a lot of times it's fan-generated.
00:23:03
Speaker
And I went with the more popular option to start the all-star game, which is pretty much what I did so far throughout all of it. Okay. I voted differently than that.
00:23:15
Speaker
I voted who I think is the best player that deserves to be playing. I voted for only deserving guys, but if if I was borderline in who should start, I'd pick the more popular guy. Yeah, I unfortunately didn't get the popularity thing. but So, Sherm, give us your your two outfielders then since the AOs. is since Two outfielders? I pick three.
00:23:32
Speaker
Well, Judge is in. so you guys Yes, obviously Judge. Yes, Judge should be in. Obviously, he's the best player in baseball. ah My other two were Riley Green and Stephen Kwan. Oh, we're the same. Look at that.
00:23:44
Speaker
Look at that. Green as well. I went Byron Buxton. I don't hate that. I don't hate that. don't hate that at all. I don't hate that. Nice. And DH, who do we got?
00:23:57
Speaker
Rooker. Good pick. That's a really good one. He's my reserve. But yeah, Mike, who'd you go with? I went Ryan O'Hearn. Yeah, I just did. But it's honestly, the Rooker pick, I really liked that. That's a great pick. yeah i Honestly, it was more, you know, the first thing I looked at was who was competing in the starter polls.
00:24:17
Speaker
And for the most part, I went there unless I thought they really didn't deserve it. But I have no issue with Rooker being the sorter there. I don't need that at all. What's weird though is how did Rooker not get the votes when but he play early A's fans did vote for Get Wilson in the conversation?
00:24:36
Speaker
That's a good point. I don't know. and Because I i think don't think the A's have fans, so Jacob Wilson was getting voted on by other people. I guess so. Do we want to do pitchers or we do we want to go NL lineup first?
00:24:52
Speaker
ah Let's finish AL. All right. All right. Let's see. three You doing pitchers here? Yeah. five five is not Five starters and two

All-Star Selections and Debates

00:25:01
Speaker
relievers. Okay, because I did nine and three, so I'll pick my top five. All right. You guys go first. I only have four starters.
00:25:08
Speaker
Josh, why don't you read yours off? I'll tell you if you if you match. right.
00:25:14
Speaker
Skubal. Agree. On around. Agree. Max Reed. Yep. Agree. Eric Crochet. Agree. Take up DeGrom. I went Boobich over DeGrom. I knew you were going to do that. But I do have DeGrom in my nine that would actually get in.
00:25:30
Speaker
And then my two relievers are Hayter. Agree. And Munoz. Okay. Okay, yeah. I don't hate that. um Munoz had some ridiculous streak where he had like 20-something appearances without giving up a run.
00:25:46
Speaker
Admittedly, that was an oversight on my end, I think. i don't He hasn't really thrown a lot lately, but still doing all right. Hater, however, is the far and away best reliever in baseball yes as of today.
00:26:01
Speaker
I went Carlos Estevez for my second reliever.
00:26:06
Speaker
Nice. I went Mason Miller. I don't know if that is. He's been bad. Oh, well. Yeah. Bad. 4.3 DRA. Oh, I should change that. Okay. And I have, I did have a third reliever. I went class A, just the popularity thing, but Munoz probably should have been my pick. You got to give Zach credit. He doesn't like relievers.
00:26:23
Speaker
Yeah, he actually picked one. Oh, yeah. was surprised he didn't opt out. yeah And Mike, who are your... How many pitchers did you end up picking in total for your Nine. So I agree with Scoobble, Brown, Crochet, and Freed.
00:26:38
Speaker
I went Bubich as my fifth. DeGrom was my sixth. And then no particular order. I went Frambois Valdez, Seth Lugo. And I needed a white sock somewhere, and I put Adrian Hauser as the knife. ah There's nobody else to put, and I had to. I actually like that though. Yeah, he's probably going to be their all-star too. after You have to pick a white sock. He is the only guy.
00:26:58
Speaker
I like that. So that was where that that's the only reason why. And that's why I like doing it this way because it made me think a little more like because, like, of course, everyone can complain, oh, how'd you snub this guy? But when you realize the rule is there that you have to have one in each team, someone is going to get snubbed.
00:27:13
Speaker
Yeah, that's true. Yeah. Too much thinking me. it's important to it that way. Yeah, exactly. Too much thinking.
00:27:21
Speaker
Do you want to read off your AL reserves then as well? I guess so, yeah. So we mentioned a couple of them. Catcher, I went Logan Ohoppy. ah He had a heck of a first half. What?
00:27:32
Speaker
I'm okay with that. Heck of a first half. Long Island kid. I'm not to lie. If it's close, I'm going him. Went a Ronda first base.
00:27:43
Speaker
Reluctantly, I went Holiday second base. Wrong. Jacob Wilson shortstop. No, can we go back? Why? Why Holiday? How many better options are there? If Gleyber Torres is your starter. Wow.
00:27:59
Speaker
What else is there? Lau. Well, yeah, i guess. I guess, yeah. I mean... He's hitting 250. ah But Lau isn't hitting all that much better. It's not like it's that egregious.
00:28:12
Speaker
It's pretty egregious. Plus, I'm thinking the legacy stuff. I'd rather see him make his first than Lau make his second.
00:28:21
Speaker
You're on page for three-war season. You don't really belong there. No, I don't think Holiday deserves to get in. I don't think Holiday necessarily deserves it either, but it's it's a numbers game. You have to pick a second baseman. yeah So who is it going to be?
00:28:33
Speaker
And I guess I see the loud point. It's not a bad point. All right, continue. Jacob Wilson short, Alex Bregman third, Stephen Kwan, and Cody Bellinger of my outfielders and Rooker was my DH.
00:28:50
Speaker
I like that. I just don't know how you can tell me that Holliday is a better option over Lau when Lau has 10 more home runs and is hitting 20 points higher. I just don't know how you can tell me that.
00:29:02
Speaker
I honestly didn't really think of Lau. Okay. Wow. if he's If he's not coming to mind, he probably doesn't belong there unless I'm obligated. Just for the record, for the record, Lau is hitting 277 with 19 home runs. I know. i'm I'm looking at him right now.
00:29:16
Speaker
Does he probably deserve it over Holliday? Yes. Absolutely. But if you're not really thinking of him, And you already have a Ray. Why? Because the numbers are better.
00:29:30
Speaker
All right, I got one wrong. But again, you can't crap on my all-star picks for reserves. No, you're right. You're absolutely right. i'm i'm gone i mean I mean, again, Lau was my starter, and you didn't even have in your top two. So, yeah, i'm gonna um I'm going to have a little bit of an issue with that one, but okay.
00:29:47
Speaker
But the he's your starter out of nobody being good enough to be an all-star. It's not like I'm going to stand on my soapbox and pick Brandon Lau. He has to be a guy.
00:29:58
Speaker
He doesn't have to be a guy. He's done nothing special this season. He doesn't have to be there.
00:30:08
Speaker
You know, this isn't like I omitted Riley Green. Were you thinking about it? No. Well, I mean, i mean um I'll throw your war you know your war thing back at you.
00:30:20
Speaker
Loud's got one and a half war, and Holiday doesn't even have one. I know. Again, I'm aware of that. it's more yeah Again, hitting 20 points higher with but but nine more home runs and 25 more RBIs. So i don't know. You tell me.
00:30:35
Speaker
Again, I'm not saying it's necessarily wrong. But I'm saying you're wrong. When I'm sitting there thinking of second baseman in the AL, Lau didn't come to mind.
00:30:47
Speaker
Well, how long it only came to mind because his father? The only yeah reason why it came to mind. But that was one of my last minute fill-ins that I needed to do. Lau came to mind he has a brother. How about that? It came to mind because his family too.
00:31:00
Speaker
ah Okay. butm I just, and cool. Okay. right, moving All I know is if I could put, if I could take out any one person and do any at-large player, the backup second baseman in the American League would be the one.
00:31:16
Speaker
All right, all right. We're going to move on to the Holiday doesn't even belong in a major league. None of them belong. No, none of them belong. The fact that Glaber is starting is gross, by the way. That's my point. yeah if Can we just scrap and pretend second base doesn't exist and play with the heat? Yes.
00:31:29
Speaker
ah
00:31:32
Speaker
Okay, National League catcher. Everyone has Will Smith, I assume? Yes. Yes. Yes. Okay, good. um First base is going to be fun First base is really interesting. what do i had i ended up going Pete.
00:31:44
Speaker
I did. I also want Pete. I also want Pete. I hated it though. It just felt wrong. and His numbers are clearly better than Freeman. I just like Freddie so much better. but He's my reserve. Yeah.
00:31:56
Speaker
Well, yeah. He's an all-star. Yeah. It's crazy. 20 more ribbies is nuts, by the way, too. all right It kind of goes against my, you know, if it's close, go with the more popular guy theory, but I don't think this one was really close.
00:32:09
Speaker
No. it' just honestly It shouldn't be. It really shouldn't be. Yeah, it's kind of shocking. It didn't feel close. He's having a good year. All right.
00:32:19
Speaker
Second base. Mike, who'd you go with? Cattell Marte. so Same. Same, same, same. This getting boring. Yeah, I know. think that defense would be crazy. All right, something crazy.
00:32:31
Speaker
Manny Machado, third base? Yeah. Yep. All right, short then. Who do we got? This might be interesting.
00:32:41
Speaker
There's a lot of guys who deserve— Honestly, this is the one that I wish we could get rid of Torres and get rid of either Lau or Holiday for and put an extra NL shortstop in the mix. I picked Lindor.
00:32:53
Speaker
Wrong. Oh, no. No! Come on, dude. I cannot stand— this is This is the MVP argument all over again. He plays good defense. There's so many guys hitting better than him. It's shortstop. There's so many guys that are just... I went with Lindor as Defense matters for shortstop. Where'd you go, Zach?
00:33:14
Speaker
I went Lindor as well. It did not feel good. but ah You guys are just terrible, dude. Let me guess, you went LA because you ready. did go LA because he's a better hitter. I don't hate that. i yeah I don't hate that at all. He's my he's my reserve. yeah And I genuinely, Zach, you're going to like this, I felt very bad that I couldn't find a spot for Trey Turner.
00:33:33
Speaker
He's having okay year. He's fine. He's leading league in hits. Okay. And I would vote for him over Lindor. I thought about that. Lindor doesn't even make my all-star team. Sorry.
00:33:44
Speaker
I thought about that. Yeah, he's like Jackson Holliday. Shouldn't even be there. All right. Let's pull up the Lindor numbers quick, shall we? 250. Let me guess. war elite defense. It's the same thing I said. I can't in good at consciousness vote for a guy hitting 250 when there are multiple guys hitting better than that. Sorry. ellie can Pull up Ellie's numbers, Mike. What's the comparison there?
00:34:05
Speaker
Let's see.
00:34:09
Speaker
More war, better average. Oh, shoot. Yeah, he has to... Oh, shoot. Oh, oh shoot. More home runs, too. Not as good defensively.
00:34:21
Speaker
How many stolen bases? He's close enough. Give it to the more popular guy. Francisco Lindor. He's popular. He's popular. Lindor is more popular. very popular Lindor is more popular.
00:34:31
Speaker
Lindor. Just older. i gotta go I'm standing by my Lindor pick here. I might have to switch. I'm sorry. Of course you are. Classic Zach. Oh. Stand your ground, man. Oh, man. Maybe I should have voted for Bill White.
00:34:45
Speaker
I can just admit when I make the wrong choice, I'm like, yo oh, my God. Bill White.
00:34:53
Speaker
Bill White all over again. Military veteran.
00:34:58
Speaker
just Okay, I think we're going to have more fun with the outfielders now, though. Yeah, that's a really that's a good question. Yeah. Yeah. I would like to hear Max. Okay.
00:35:10
Speaker
you three Your three. top three. I'm going to start with the obvious one, which is egregious that he's not going to be starting. And that's James Wood.
00:35:20
Speaker
There's no doubt in my mind that he belongs a starter. First batter to be intentionally walked four times in the game since Barry Bonds. Number two, Pete Crow Armstrong.
00:35:33
Speaker
Anything against it so far. No one's yelling at me yet. No. My third one, this is going be the controversial one, I'm going to do it because he's been elite, is Ronald Acuna Jr.
00:35:47
Speaker
I don't hate it. I really don't. Because you can't penalize him from coming back from injury, right? You can't. It's only played 30-something No, and... Again, he passes the popularity test. I know that so you may not think that matters, but he's still hitting 361.
00:36:03
Speaker
He's got no p s above a thousand yeah an got an OPS plus a 208. And he's on pace, you know, 162 game pace of an 11-war season. So, right, I don't hate that, but let me ask you.
00:36:15
Speaker
So you don't have k Kyle Tucker your fourth? He's my fourth. So he's on my team. Do you have him start over Armstrong, though? No. No. I think when you think of the start of this season, certain guys stand out.
00:36:31
Speaker
You have, you know, obviously the guys like Judge Notani who, you know, do their usual lead production. And then you have your breakout stars that no one really expected to pop off the way they did. And Pete Crow Armstrong is that for me.
00:36:43
Speaker
I don't hate that. do have two Cub outfielders on my all-star team. Just, I have Crow Armstrong. Okay. All right, sure. What did you go with? I haven't had the same four, but in a different order.
00:36:54
Speaker
Okay. So I have PCA, Tucker, and Acuna. and I could not find a spot for Wood, unfortunately.
00:37:05
Speaker
But he is my fourth guy. I can live with that, but Wood's just been incredible. He has. on one He passed the All-Star Game fun test, which was my main reason for putting him up.
00:37:17
Speaker
If Acuna didn't come out hitting what he's hitting, it would have been a no-brainer for Wood. I'm honestly surprised that Acuna would be your three and Wood would be your four.
00:37:31
Speaker
I like Acuna. mean i I like Acuna. no I'll use the argument. I like him. What I'm saying is I'm surprised Acuna is not higher on your list knowing you. I figured Acuna would have been your number one guy. No, PCA is my number one guy because I like to torture Mets fans.
00:37:48
Speaker
Fair. feel and And Kyle Tucker is my number two guy because he's a future Yankee.
00:37:56
Speaker
Okay. okay i Just kidding. Just kidding. That's not why. ah Tucker and Wood, i'm mean, their stats are so similar. But I think Tucker has like just a tiny little edge on him.
00:38:07
Speaker
The other thing is when you're thinking about it as an all-star game, I think, again, if it's close, you'd go with a new team. Not even popular. You go with the, you know, if you have a double of a team already, you want to have as many teams represented on the field as possible. Oh, sure. i get that.
00:38:23
Speaker
So having two Cubs when I could have a guy like James Wood, who's one of the, again, breakout stars of the season. When you think of the season, you're going to think of the rise of Pete Carl Armstrong. You're going to think of the rise of James Wood.
00:38:36
Speaker
I feel like Wood is not getting as much ah or publicity as PCA is getting. He's finally starting to. That four intentional walk game, people are finally starting to put some respect on him.
00:38:48
Speaker
Even though, ironically, he did nothing in that game to get the risk back then. But they're starting to see, okay, other teams are starting to really, know, be scared of this guy. Got it.
00:38:59
Speaker
Because Nashville's been bad for five years. They've never done anything. No one's ever done anything like that for their hitters. Is he on your fantasy team by by chance? Mine? No. I'm surprised. No.
00:39:09
Speaker
I wish I had him. Who does have him? I don't know. going to look. Believe me, it'd be great if I had him.
00:39:18
Speaker
and there's just obviously no DH voting because Otani is a lock right Derek got him okay that was great pick from Derek yeah des wouldn't make mo getting I'm I would say I could give an if it was the AL he would have been the pick it would have made things a lot easier what of I didn't get to say my DH ah my backup DH in the AL by the way I had been right i had Brett Rooker but I originally had Ben Rice and i changed it before we did the pod okay So I did do Rupp. I was smart. You changed it.
00:39:50
Speaker
Yeah. i Again, that was more of a who do I put here. Jordan Alvarez has been terrible. Surprisingly. Yeah. Okay. Do we want to rattle off Max like nine and then I think you should go first on pitchers.
00:40:07
Speaker
Oh, sure. um Unfortunately, I didn't pick five because I'm a loser, but I have... At least you admit it. Yeah. I have Skeens, one, Wheeler, two, Schwellenbach, and this is in the order now. Chris Sanchez of the Phillies is also pretty good.
00:40:23
Speaker
think he's having a pretty good year. And relievers, I picked Suarez from the Padres and Trevor McGill from the Brewers. Okay. Interesting. I don't and don't love it, but I don't hate it.
00:40:38
Speaker
I agree with four of your five starters, with every starter except one, and I want to put him in. I don't have room for him, and it killed me. and You're gonna have a hard time with my starters. I have a feeling. Uh-oh.
00:40:49
Speaker
go ahead yeah Go ahead. I'll read the question where I don't. ah Go ahead Read your five. Read your top five. You read yours, and I'll say yes or no. Okay. I have Zach Wheeler. Yes. Skeens. Yes.
00:41:00
Speaker
Andrew Rabbit. Yes. Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Yes. Logan Webb. Yes. Okay. Well, I guess we're, you know. They all at the very least made my nine.
00:41:13
Speaker
My two relievers are Edwin Diaz. Yes. Kyle Finnegan. I thought about him. I think Finnegan's having it better year than McGill. I didn't go McGill either.
00:41:24
Speaker
all alright And I can't put Suarez because of how the the wheels have absolutely just fallen off on the guy. I did three relievers. I did Suarez, Diaz, and I needed a Marlin somewhere, so I put Anthony Bender.
00:41:35
Speaker
Yeah, that's painful. forgot around. Oh my god. that's an I had to. hering Find a Marlin who deserves it more than him. And it was the easiest spot to fill someone in. think can probably find a guy who deserves more than him.
00:41:47
Speaker
Would nice to have Finnegan, but A Marlin who deserves him more than him? No idea. Yeah, right. I don't I said i couldn't hate anybody. I'm going to be completely honest. Exactly.
00:41:58
Speaker
That's the point. You know you keep going. i I'll think about it. I'll let you know. All right. So the starters, I don't have a particular order, but I guess I'll just spitball the five that I would have had as the five. Skeens, Wheeler, Sanchez, Abbott, and Yamamoto.
00:42:14
Speaker
And then my four that were my that would fill in my actual roster would have been Webb, Robbie Ray, who's actually having a heck of a season, Ranger Suarez, and Freddy Peralta.
00:42:28
Speaker
Genuine, genuine apology to Spencer Schwellenbach. I do want to fill him in. I just don't have a spot.
00:42:36
Speaker
And did you mention relievers already? ah iis Suarez, Diaz, and Bender. Yep, right. Okay. right. Well, I think that covers everything.
00:42:48
Speaker
Oh, Matt, wait. Did you do your reserves for the the lineup as well? i didn't, but I'm up to you. have time I don't know. All right. So catcher, I needed a Rocky, Hunter Goodman. I've come up with an answer. Go ahead. ah My answer is Kyle Stowers, outfielder.
00:43:03
Speaker
But you're going to who are you removing out of? Yeah, are taking out? Acuna, Armstrong, or Wood, or Soto, or Tucker, or Tatis. No, he's just a backup guy. Right, but if you Take Tatis out. You blast Tatis with a son. Oh, he deserves it over Tatis for sure.
00:43:17
Speaker
I disagree. I kind of spoiled my outfielders. Soto, Tucker, Tatis. ah First base, Freddie Freeman. Second base, I actually needed a Cardinal, Brendan Donovan. Shortstop, L.A. De La Cruz.
00:43:29
Speaker
And third base, Eugenio Suarez. yeah And DH was Kyle Schwarber.
00:43:35
Speaker
I like that. Schwarber is the D, guys. He has over 20 home runs already. pretty well He's had a heck of a career, honestly. He might he has an out outside child to get 500 home runs.
00:43:46
Speaker
I'm just saying. I'm just saying. Just saying here. Just saying here. Stowers has got about 20 batting average points on Tatis right now. He's two home runs less.
00:43:57
Speaker
Okay. Two home runs. I'll give that. He's got about five more RBIs. ah His OPS plus is about 20 points higher. His OPS is about 60 points higher. And his slugging is about 50 points higher. Okay. That's great. But that boy nice.
00:44:16
Speaker
What is the name of the game, Josh?
00:44:20
Speaker
Popularity. fireity Popularity. All-star game. Hey, hey can we can we move on to the things that I would change about the league? Because I would change no more fan voting.
00:44:33
Speaker
None. Zero. Zilch. You're all stupid. Well, the reason why that we're doing this discussion is because we actually got a fan mail question, which I'm very, very happy about. It's our first fan mail question. And if anybody is listening and has a question for us, we'd love to hear from you. If any other fans except the one person that listens to the show.
00:44:52
Speaker
Oh, don't worry. My dad has a ton of questions for us. well du Please do this. this Have them write it in. Have them write it in. CobbPod.com. Yeah. yeah we could We could do, um you know, voicemails. First time, long time. How you doing? Like, we could do stuff like that. Honestly, wait. I would get him to record one of those. That'd be really funny. We 100% need to.
00:45:11
Speaker
but It would probably take you about 20 years to figure out how to add that into the pod, but I would do that. Oh, I would do it. It's okay. think it'd be great. yeah So the question was, if you were the commissioner for a day, but could make three irreversible changes, permanently irreversible changes,
00:45:29
Speaker
to some form of rule about Major League Baseball, what would you do? I think Sherm should go first. He's very passionate today. ah Well, like I said, one of them would be no more fan voting ever again.
00:45:44
Speaker
My second one would be a salary floor. ya And my third one would be, and i hope you guys can get behind this one, is that um I'm actually undecided on how I want to approach this, but I think the conclusion is that all players into the league that there should be an international draft.
00:46:11
Speaker
You cannot just sign with a team. I didn't think if there should be international draft, but I love it. So that includes the Mexican kids that they're signing at age 14.
00:46:23
Speaker
And that includes the Japanese guys that come over at age 25. They all have to be drafted. And you can decide if you want to draft the 25-year-old guy out of Japan that plays now or the 14-year-old out of Cuba that you don't know if he's going to play or not.
00:46:37
Speaker
That's your decision.
00:46:40
Speaker
I like it lot. I really do. That's a great move. I think that's a great answer. Yeah. Thank you. I appreciate that. I hope our one ah listener enjoys that one as well. i I won't put it in because I didn't think of it.
00:46:54
Speaker
Zach, did you like to go or would you like to defer? No. um My number one demand was a salary floor because the owner stuff has really, you know, struggle it's pissed me off lately. So I think and we we all probably have a salary floor. That's number one for me.

MLB Expansion and Player Policies

00:47:08
Speaker
Number two would be some sort of reassessment of the umpire's union, just like an audit or something to do. There has to be a way to, yeah, ABS.
00:47:20
Speaker
ABS is important. Just balance the the union power or something. i don't know what the correct word it is um Fireball. Well, I don't know if we do that. Start fresh. But maybe an audit or something. Just something has to be done about that.
00:47:34
Speaker
um And I would say have somebody work on this expansion stuff and really have teams commit like this whole BS thing where the A's are playing in Sacramento is unacceptable. They actually haven't broken ground in Vegas. Like that's not really confirmed.
00:47:50
Speaker
I really think that they should have a they should really have a like confirmed plan for expansion. You can't just willy nilly say you're going to do something and then now your team's in limbo. I don't think that's fair. And expansion, that's real occasion.
00:48:03
Speaker
Oh, right. And if there was a salary floor, we wouldn't have to worry about this because the A's guy would sell the team. Yeah, that's a good point. It's not expansion. It's just have a better policy than this sort of thing so where teams aren't playing in minor league ballparks. Have policies in general.
00:48:16
Speaker
Yeah, it's embarrassing.
00:48:20
Speaker
That would be my three. So my number three, I'm surprised neither one of you mentioned it. know what one of yours is already. What is it? Opening day is played at night or on the weekend. ring That was my number four, but didn't put in my... Really? I cannot believe... i actually can't believe that.
00:48:38
Speaker
Because he already knows that take and you guys already know that take. But our other faithful listeners don't know it. What are you doing? What doing? I've been on that rant before. I'm sure I've said it before. but Opening day, opening day i've I've changed my stance on that too. Opening day should not be necessarily at night.
00:48:54
Speaker
Opening day, I get it. Opening day, it's a day. It should be on a weekend. Okay. That I can get behind. can stand by that. too That's my number four change. I agree. i' I've come to terms on agreeing with you about the opening day.
00:49:08
Speaker
um I also think it should be played. This might be controversial, but the national pastime, should be played here for opening day. Agree? Yes. i don't I don't like the Japan stuff either. It's boring.
00:49:22
Speaker
The Japan stuff can happen. That's fine. Do it. You know, extend the All-Star break for an extra week and have a series go on right after the All-Star break. Yeah. you hundred i agree. Yeah. thought and not None of it. No more of this ah starting the season two weeks early.
00:49:33
Speaker
At 6 a.m. Yeah. At 6 a.m. It's taken away from the whole aura of opening day to me, but that's not on my list either. Number three, I'm surprised neither one you put this in, was the use of automatic balls and strikes.

That was mine before we had the fight about the All-Star Game. I feel like that covers the umpires. I don't know. Some sort of audit with the umpires union. You know what i mean? Yeah, I what you're saying. But I also think, I feel like at least some umpires would be for It it would actually make their job easier.
00:50:02
Speaker
Yeah. So it would create better working conditions. You're less likely to get you know roasted by fans because it's just safe in out calls now. So we'd have that. Yeah, I can't do that well either.
00:50:15
Speaker
What? I don't do safe and alcohol as well either. Well, that's another thing. You also have, i guess, you know the pitch clock and officiating that that they might get in trouble for. Yeah. um Number two was a salary floor.
00:50:29
Speaker
Number one, I had a couple different goofy things in mind that I've actually talked to Mike about. I'm not going to do them. I'm going to make it serious, actually. And it's something that we've never talked about on here. Every once in a while, you'll watch a game and you'll hear so-and-so hit his 10 years of service. Congratulations to him.
00:50:45
Speaker
He has a fully vested pension. ah Every single player who makes it to the major leagues should be pension eligible. Yeah.
00:50:56
Speaker
There should be no question about that. Because you could go and get Tommy John surgery, blow your arm out, and never pitch again. And now you basically got drafted at 18 years old by these teams.
00:51:07
Speaker
I understand you chose not to not go to college. You chose to go into the major league system. But you're giving up your body for the sport, for the team that drafted you.
00:51:19
Speaker
You should have a fully vested pension if you make the major leagues. I like this. I like this very much. I thought I was going to have arguments. I'm surprised. No, it's not my money. yeah Who would be against that?
00:51:30
Speaker
but so and The owners. Yeah, the owners would be against that. That's who would be against that. Yeah. Football especially because of all the risks you have there. But yeah every baseball well every major league baseball player should be pension eligible the second you get called up.
00:51:44
Speaker
I think it would add so much meaning to the fact it already means a lot that you're getting called up, but that would mean so much more the second you set foot on an and n MLB field. Your family is protected. And we won't hear any more of these stories or we'll hear significant last stories of these guys going bankrupt.
00:52:01
Speaker
Yeah. I like it. um like them. like it all.
00:52:07
Speaker
So that was my serious one. My goofy ones were make Armando Galarraga's game a perfect game. I like that. And have you have the i would let the Players Association come to terms with this, but I would give them the choice of either, listen, steroids no longer matter or the steroid users that fail a test are banned for life. You choose.
00:52:29
Speaker
What? Yeah, I don't know. I don't care which, but we got to pick a side one way or another. Either we we discount all their accomplishments or we praise all their accomplishments.
00:52:42
Speaker
I actually saw an interesting piece of news as we were recording. If you'd like me to share it. Go ahead. ah So Diamondbacks season ticket holder has been band ah for multiple offenses of multiple offenses of reaching over the fences to catch home run

Fan Interactions and Consequences

00:53:00
Speaker
balls. He has caught a ball that has not actually gone out four years in a row, and he did it again on Monday, and the Diamondbacks had enough and banned him.
00:53:16
Speaker
See, when you said that, I thought you were going to talk about the fan that went at Ketel Marte. Oh, yeah. forgot about that. Yeah, you do have to talk about that one, too. Yeah. ah Yeah, that guy should ban forever from every stadium. Yeah, that's tough.
00:53:31
Speaker
I mean, what, Marte's mom died in like 2017 or something, and he was making some comments about it. So here's the problem with this, and I think it speaks more about heckling in general, which makes it tough.
00:53:45
Speaker
Ketel Marte said that the fan yelled, quote, I sent your mom a text last night. a Which moves him to tears. And i'm i'm I understand why it moves him to tears.
00:53:58
Speaker
But there's enough deniability here where the fan may genuinely have not known that Cattell's mom passed. Oh, yeah. I guess. her oh Then it becomes an issue of, you know, was it meant to be harmless heckling?
00:54:15
Speaker
you know, ah your mom joke. that went over the line. Now we weren't there. There might've been many more things said and maybe he kept it clean for the press.
00:54:25
Speaker
And maybe he said stuff that was a lot worse. Yeah. I'm curious. i buy what's Here, but take back my statement. and But could we really go and say that, you know,
00:54:37
Speaker
I think it very well could have been an honest mistake. I don't know. Yeah, because you're right. The average fan, I don't think it knows that could tell Marte's mom passed away. i wouldn't know. I certainly did not. yeah Would I have gone and been like, oh, your mother this? No.
00:54:51
Speaker
No, but... But i could understand why you know of a fan might. Yeah, it's a tough situation. I feel like you were right. We need to know what was actually...
00:55:03
Speaker
if more was said and stuff like that. Cause if the guy did do his research, then that's really messed up. Yeah. Um, but if that's more of a, your mom joke, I don't, I actually kind of side with the fan. I don't think he deserves to get banned for life.
00:55:15
Speaker
Like I remember going to, uh, the 2019 ALCS against the Astros and I was sitting in the bleachers and people were on Wikipedia looking up, you know, family members names.
00:55:26
Speaker
Yeah. But I don't know if this is what that was. If he said the like in this case at Yankee Stadium, they were using people's names. Yeah. It all came up a lot.
00:55:38
Speaker
Yeah. you know I mean there's definitely a lot of like, oh, tell me your mom. you know Right. So we won't really know if this was yeah One of those things, a joke gone wrong, not knowing. And we've all been there where we've said something that we didn't realize was going to mess somebody up.
00:55:59
Speaker
It just happened to him to be in public. All right. I changed my mind. One-year ban. can get behind that. One-year ban, ban hammer. Yeah.
00:56:10
Speaker
I like that. and ah And to speak of the other Diamondbacks banned, Zach Campbell will be proud of this man. Four years in a row, you're catching a ball like that? That's crazy. Yeah. That's unheard of. He needs the what does he do, the cop trick? he needs Yeah. yeah
00:56:27
Speaker
Awesome. Zach Campbell's like, why didn't I think of that first? Didn't Zach Campbell get banned? No, that was a myth. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, that's right. Yeah, people were celebrating and they realized it wasn't real. Yeah.
00:56:40
Speaker
Whatever that central website is. yeah yeah Yeah. I'm sure he's a loyal listener. I hate that guy. He's almost as bad as that one guy that pretends to be the NHL insider instead of Frank Saravalli. It's fronk.
00:56:55
Speaker
I can't tell you how many times I've gotten text messages from people. It's like, oh my God, look at this trade. And it's like, you got fronked. I'm going to sound like the guy from the Polar Express here, like that nerdy kid, the know-it-all kid.
00:57:06
Speaker
But I cannot stand those Centel sites. When NBA Centel got banned or got kicked off, I was so happy and everyone was like mourning the loss. And I had that web that account blocked for months at that point.
00:57:20
Speaker
Yeah. I blocked those on the spot. ah one The one that got me a few times was talking baseball instead of baseball. Yeah. Oh, that one's funny. yeah That guy's actually pretty funny. need more they they They need more exaggeration.
00:57:36
Speaker
Like, big parody account, it would be nice know. You know, Prince Fielder gets traded to Diamondbacks is not funny. it's not There's no exaggeration. Prince Fielder causes 2.3 magnitude earthquake in Arizona.
00:57:51
Speaker
That's funny. Well, there was one about his neck being too big. so That's funny.
00:57:58
Speaker
You need exaggeration. but What neck? that was That's the joke, Sherp.
