00:00:00
Speaker
Hello and welcome to the Girl I Slept in My Makeup podcast by three sisters who are at three different life stages and have three different perspectives. They're excited to learn and grow alongside of you. This is a space full of love and acceptance.
00:00:12
Speaker
No judgment because let's face it, sleeping in your makeup is more than a podcast title. It's a reminder that we all mess up. So give yourself and others lots of grace.
Family Anecdotes: Anniversaries and Birthdays
00:00:22
Speaker
Please welcome my three little sisters, Lauren, Megan, and Kristen.
00:00:32
Speaker
Hey, k kay hi Hey, listeners. ah Lulu is in Vegas, so she's not recording. who Whoa, she's not recording with us today. so it's just me and Today is her 18th wedding anniversary. So pretty cool.
00:00:47
Speaker
I know. in our brother's birthday. It's a special day. Yeah, I still can't believe she got married on our brother's birthday. It's still so funny to me. I know. Does anybody else have a situation like that where you did something big on one of your family members' birthdays? It's so funny. Well, because that will will be like a forever thing, you know, high in our lives.
00:01:07
Speaker
Thinking about how when we were all there for Lauren and Chris's wedding and my brother stood up to give a speech and was like, thank you all for being here for my birthday. Yes. So good. Oh, so funny. I love it.
Trick-or-Treating Tales with Kinder
00:01:22
Speaker
and Well, we just celebrated Halloween with y'all, which was cool. was the first time Kinder really got to trick or treat. was so cute. You would think he was a pro. Like he's been trick or treating.
00:01:33
Speaker
A lot. Like he just, it was like, he knew exactly what to do. He's the first two year old I've ever seen keep his costume on the entire time. Even the hat and like the head and everything.
00:01:44
Speaker
I know i was actually. Yes. I've never seen a two year old do that. I mean, technically he's not two till November 6th, which will be this Thursday. I mean, it was helpful with your girls because they kind of like showed him the ropes. But literally, he would go up to every house and he'd only grab one piece of candy. Like we did not tell him to do that, but he would only grab one Like Michael even would be like, Kinder, grab an two. And he would like switch it out. Like he wouldn't take more than one.
00:02:12
Speaker
It was so cute. He's just naturally polite. Yeah. Yeah, it's just like naturally as manners, I guess. I don't know. So cute. I know. Yeah, I feel like it helps because he was like watching Joe Rowan and Esri do it and was like, okay, I got this.
00:02:25
Speaker
Yeah, like, okay, this is what we're supposed to do. Got it. This is my moment. Yeah, I loved It it was so adorable. Yeah, because it's funny that when we walked down the street, I saw we have a neighbor that has a toddler boy and they were basically at a standstill because he wouldn't put his costume on. Yeah, that's typically what I've seen. yeah Oh my gosh, it's so cute. I know it's crazy getting to the age I'm at, 10 and 7.
00:02:49
Speaker
It's almost easier when they're 3, 2, 3, 4, because you can kind of just do what you want on Halloween. But now ah my kids like have their agendas, you know, and I think it just gets more and more. like My nieces I saw in Arkansas like went fully trick-or-treating by themselves. I'm like, oh my gosh, that's wild. Gonna get there soon. yeah. I know. It's so crazy.
Candy Conversations and Preferences
00:03:10
Speaker
And it's weird. My child apparently just doesn't really like candy. Like he, he would take one bite and he would just throw it like, and he didn't eat like any of his candy. And I was, I was actually happy about it. I was like, awesome.
00:03:23
Speaker
Yeah. You're like, this makes my life easier because candy is addicting. So yeah it's for the best. That's awesome. i don't really like sweets. So I don't know if like, but I do like candy every once in a while, you know, so I don't know. Yeah.
00:03:36
Speaker
I'm actually not a huge candy person. Like Bobby was saying his stomach's been messed up because he keeps sneaking their candy. Like the leftover candy, we have a ton of it. And like we need to throw it away probably. But I don't, weirdly, like I don't get tempted by that. Like I'm not a big candy person. Unless they had some like really good dark chocolate. Like I'd be all in that bag for sure. But just like regular Halloween candy. i don't know. i'm always like, ah I like a couple Swedish fish. That's about it. A good thing that he's not obsessed with candy. Because once he...
Holiday Decor Debate: Halloween to Christmas
00:04:04
Speaker
is he will just want to gobble it up i know i'm a sucker for any like kind of gummy like i love swedish fish i love sour patch kids anything like that it's hard for me to resist so i know so what do you think about people going straight into decorating for christmas what's your thoughts on this because it was so funny walking around there was multiple it was like halloween decorations and then like christmas decor would be like the next house I don't know. I feel like for me, Halloween and November, like it's similar. It's like, I always keep my Halloween decor up until, especially when it comes to like pumpkins and like that kind of decor and then to the end of November.
00:04:41
Speaker
And then like, I feel like December 1st is when you switch over. You know, so many people, I feel like since COVID are earlier and earlier with the Christmas tree, which I love it because I love Christmas, but I personally love fall decor. Like I love all the pumpkins. I don't really do a ton of Halloween decor, but I love all the pumpkins. So like, I want to go buy more pumpkins right now. I don't want to go straight into Christmas yet, but I I'm like, whatever, do you, but I kind of like the three separate, I guess, sections.
00:05:13
Speaker
Well, and I always leave our Christmas tree up late. So like, I don't take it down after new year's. I like leave it till like February. okay. That's yeah. That could be a thing too. I guess I always take it down because I just feel like I love it. But in our house, I think if I had a space where I felt like,
00:05:32
Speaker
the Christmas tree was on its own little shrine, i would probably leave it. But because I feel like it makes my house feel cluttered, like just busier because I don't really have a space for it. But I feel like in the future, whatever like long-term house we get one day, I'll definitely be more like that. But yeah, for now, I kind of like to put everything up. I can't believe it's November though.
00:05:53
Speaker
I'm in shock to be honest. I can't believe it either. i can't believe my son is almost two. Like I'm like, wow, time is flying. Yeah. It's so crazy.
Humorous Family Pranks
00:06:05
Speaker
i was thinking about this and Kristen and I were talking about like, have we had any like funny holiday stories or like holiday fails? Like something just went way wrong and we couldn't really think of any. So we want to get y'all's like stories or confession. So if you're listening to this, please send us a message at girl. I slept in my makeup. We want to hear,
00:06:28
Speaker
About holiday fails, maybe also like holiday wins. What are your favorite holiday traditions? We'd love to hear about them. And then we can give you a shout out and read them on our next episode. But did anybody anything come to mind, Kristen? Besides, the only thing we did think of was how Kristen and Michael always not always, but they have regularly pranked us like on the holidays.
00:06:49
Speaker
And so now we're just like waiting for it. I feel like. Yeah, I feel like I've run out of times I can trick the family or I'd have to be like super clever with it somehow. But I haven't done it every year. I feel like I skip a few, you know, to make it like, oh, you don't know when it's coming, you know? Yeah.
00:07:06
Speaker
But like Thanksgiving a few years ago, i had these like clip in hair extensions and i went and put them under the sheets, like the bedding and like on a pillow to literally it looked like I was in the bed. yeah and I have like people come in one by one, like to they're like, oh my God, Kristen's really sick. Can you go check? And then they would go check. And then i was like in the bathroom hiding. And when they would come, I would like scare the crap out of them. It was actually pretty funny.
00:07:33
Speaker
It was so funny. It did scare the crap out of me. I was like, what is that? My gosh. But my favorite one, honestly, has been the one we did last year, which is actually for Christmas, where we gave our son a he was a baby, you know, he was only, how old was he? one Yeah.
00:07:49
Speaker
He had just turned one. Yeah. and And we gave him like a fake knife and put in and Brandy and Lauren fell for it the most. And it was hilarious. And I have it on film and it's like my favorite thing ever. They were so freaked out. out Megan didn't even like she was like, that's not real. i was like, thank you.
00:08:07
Speaker
I feel like honestly, though, you could probably still trick Brandy and Lauren because I still don't understand how they like thought that was real. It's so funny. i think maybe they're just gullible or something.
00:08:18
Speaker
I guess so. I don't know. funny. I love to prank the family. It's pretty fun. So fun.
Legacy Cards and Thoughtful Conversations
00:08:24
Speaker
Well, i actually have these legacy cards. We've been asking each other questions. Do you want to do some of these?
00:08:30
Speaker
Yeah. Okay. Let's see. I'm going to just pull one out. What is something you wish you could do every day? Oh man, gosh. I don't know. Maybe like going off of the holidays, playing games with family, hanging out or having a meal together.
00:08:48
Speaker
i would love that. i mean, we love going to our new like lifestyle. And now I'm like, I don't know how I would be able to go back to this as we literally go to the gym almost every day. And it really just like, i don't know, sets the tone and gets us in a good mood. and I don't know. It's just really, it's a great routine and I feel like I wouldn't want to go back from that, if that makes sense. Yeah, I love that.
00:09:10
Speaker
I was just thinking about it, like while you were talking, i feel like if I could do something every single day, probably would be some sort of like nature exercise, living somewhere. Like i think about this, like if I could live somewhere, which I mean,
00:09:27
Speaker
I don't know if there's somewhere you could live where you could always do nature exercise, maybe California, where it's like always nice weather or Colorado or something, but even Colorado it gets like freezing. So, but yeah, if I could do something every day, some sort of nature exercise where it's really great weather and really pretty, like maybe some mountains or something that I could like walk through.
00:09:48
Speaker
Yeah. Um, that's what came to mind. okay I'll do one more. What is your favorite part about your birthday? oh don't know. i don't know. I feel like the older I get, I'm just like, whatever, you know?
00:10:01
Speaker
shit I mean, it's fun to like do everything you want to do, you know, be like, oh, no, we to go to the restaurant I go to because it's my birthday, you know? Yeah, i agree with that. I think um just being able to like focus on myself but sounds so selfish. It's just like a day where, yeah, you get to pick all the things.
00:10:22
Speaker
Yeah, like and not feel guilty about it. Like I even like I'll be like, oh, like well no, you have to order this because I want to try by and I don't feel guilty because it's my birthday. Yeah, exactly. I love that.
00:10:33
Speaker
Okay, well, we'll do one more because we answered that one fast. What do you think makes someone a good friend? I think someone like, I think where you're both putting in effort and like, it's not one sided and you can rely on each other, but like not also have a lot of expectations, you know? Yeah. I think a good friendship is a good give and take. And just know that, you know, as we get older, our families come first. So sometimes it's hard to get the time in with friends, you know what i mean? and Being understanding and I don't know, like not keeping score.
00:11:07
Speaker
Yeah, I like that. Yeah, I think a good friend is someone too that just like gives grace, which is kind of what you were saying. It doesn't like give up on the friendship, you know, i feel like as adults, like when you're a kid, maybe it's a little different, but it's similar.
00:11:23
Speaker
um It's just a little easier to keep friendships going when you're younger. you get older, obviously, you're just busier. And so I think someone who doesn't like hold something against you, if you did something wrong and like reads through what you're saying all the time, you know, I feel like.
00:11:39
Speaker
just kind of gives grace and loves you for who you are and checks in and it's worth workated, you know? For sure. I love that. Yeah. Well, those are our three legacy cards for today. And just a reminder, if you're just listening for the first time, i started asking these there, it's called family legacy declaration cards.
00:11:58
Speaker
And it's just basically conversation starters, but our church gave them to us or no, I think I bought them, but legacy starts with me and This is like the little card that explains it. I will not leave it to chance. It's never too late. I'm never too young. I'm never too old. I can start today.
00:12:13
Speaker
There is no story God can't redeem. There is no marriage God can't restore. There is no family God cannot heal. God's word will guide me. His Holy Spirit will lead me. And by the miracle working power of God, I will leave a godly legacy. So they did like this whole preaching series on leaving a legacy.
00:12:29
Speaker
And then I thought these cards were really cool because... sometimes we just forget to ask ourselves questions and definitely like our family members. i don't ever, I'm not a question asker by nature and I'm really trying hard to like become a question asker and like a really good question asker.
00:12:44
Speaker
so these are, these are helpful. Yeah. Yeah. I guess I am a good question asker because Michael's he always is like, wow, you know more about our family than I do. Yeah.
00:12:56
Speaker
Oh, wow. That's crazy. Yeah. I would say you and Lauren are really good question askers. Yeah. I would say I learned, or I don't, I didn't mean to, I don't think anybody did this on purpose, but I learned to just be quiet as a child. And so like questions don't come as naturally because I was trying to just not cause issues.
00:13:13
Speaker
So anyways, I'll thank you. <unk> hold thanks I know, middle child thing. But what's funny is I'm actually also an older sister. So I, or like a first child because Lauren and me are five years apart.
00:13:26
Speaker
I feel like I have dual personalities or something. Crazy lady. I'm just kidding. am a crazy
Surrender and Spiritual Reflection
00:13:31
Speaker
lady. Then the last thing I thought we could do today, and Lulu, we she's been reading to us this Revive, Declarations of God's Truth to Renew Your Spirit by Clear Cherry Reeves. I don't know. She might've already read this one. So I'm sorry if this is a repeat.
00:13:46
Speaker
I don't think she's read this one yet, but I pulled, I've been reading this book myself and this is the one that I was going to read today. So I thought I'd read it. It's called God's plan over my plan. It was a beautiful day and the playground was packed.
00:13:59
Speaker
My son Sledge and I strolled and enjoyed watching other families play made-up games and get their energy out. My eyes landed on one little boy at the top of the climbing structure. Glancing at his mama, I could see her frightened face as she tried to redirect him.
00:14:13
Speaker
Sure enough, his stubbornness to do as he pleased meant that he took a tumble. I then watched the mother mother cleaning up her son's scrapes and drying his tears. I wish it weren't the case, but as I watched this child, I saw myself.
00:14:26
Speaker
The truth is it's hard to have a teachable spirit. It requires a foundation of humility, a willingness to be wrong, and a constant belief that godly wisdom is far superior to the desires, prayers, and temporary longings of your human heart.
00:14:40
Speaker
This week, there will be countless moments when you'll face this this decision. Will you hold tightly to your pride in how you've you are perceived, or will you walk in humility Choosing to receive God's highest and best for your life as you accept his correction.
00:14:55
Speaker
Whether the teachable moments take place between you and your boss, you and your spouse, or just between you and Jesus. Being a student is one of the most powerful roles you get to claim as a child of God.
00:15:07
Speaker
Perfection is not the goal, progress Popularity isn't the goal, legacy is Impressing the world isn't the goal, living impacted by Jesus and his truth is.
00:15:19
Speaker
These truths, if you really believe them, can change everything about your week. The rich and abundant life you have been promised and the one your heart deeply desires will always be found on the other side of refinement, no matter how painful or intense it may feel.
00:15:33
Speaker
Sometimes you'll want to throw in the towel in those moments or seasons. Ask the Holy Spirit for endurance, patience, and a deeper hunger to live like Jesus. He will help you dig in and dig deep.
00:15:45
Speaker
The choice to have a teachable spirit means operating in the belief that God is good and you are not. He is the teacher and you are the student. Receive his correction as a love letter to your soul, calling you back into the shadow of his wings and reminding you that his definition of more is the life you want to live.
00:16:02
Speaker
And then the five declarations for your week are, i will receive constructive criticism with humble, with a humble and teachable spirit. I will declare that my hands are open and my heart is willing to go wherever he leads.
00:16:15
Speaker
I will remember that God is the game changer in my life. I will trust that God's will is for my good. Even when I don't understand what he is doing, i will look forward to the life God has for me. Every day is a blessing. Ooh, that was really good.
00:16:29
Speaker
and know. I take the biggest thing I take from that. It's like, I need to really work on not being so mean to Michael during pickleball.
00:16:40
Speaker
Oh, man. ah yeah As you know, our family is very competitive. I know you're like the least competitive out of all of us. But like, I just have the hardest time like not showing frustration when he is not playing well, you know. And so...
00:16:56
Speaker
And he like gets really mad at me when I'm like frustrated. and And I'm like, oh my gosh, like take this away from me. Like, it's just a game. Like, yeah, we're not, you know, professional. It's like, we're just having fun, you know, but I have this hardest time not being like, come on, man.
00:17:12
Speaker
Like, how'd you miss that?
00:17:16
Speaker
So like, oh man, yeah, I love it. Well, I'm glad that it helped you this week. i feel like it's funny. We always say this, but it's like I get similar messages from multiple places. And so I feel like this message is right on time. And the the Bible verse that went along with it was Proverbs 19.8. It says, to acquire wisdom is to love yourself. People who cherish understanding will prosper. When I first read that, I like misunderstood it, but basically it's like loving your, like acquiring wisdom helps you love yourself more. i think that's what it's like. So yeah, it's, I don't know. i just love every week. I feel like I read these. They're like right on time, but that's. Yeah.
00:17:55
Speaker
kind of just a theme for me this whole last year is like god's plan over my plan like i feel almost on my breath as i'm like walking through life i'm like holy spirit make me more like jesus like just make me want what god wants over what i want and so this was just like another step in that journey to just have a truly humble teachable spirit with god now but don't you wish you just like okay this is what you need to do yeah you I know. No, at this point I don't. I'm like totally fully just like, I know nothing, God.
Prayer and Seeking Guidance
00:18:25
Speaker
You are the creator. You know everything. But I'm not saying this is what what I want to do. i want him to be like, this is what he wants to yes. Yes, I do wish that. I wish he would just show me like, what do I do?
00:18:36
Speaker
Make it so clear. Just do this, this, and this. And I'd be like, got it. Doing it. Same. I love directions. Yeah. That would be so nice. Please, God. Just at least like step by step, you know? Yeah.
00:18:49
Speaker
Which I usually feel like that's how it comes. So, well, thanks for chatting with me today and listeners. Thanks for listening. We love you and we're grateful for you. and yeah, just a journey of learning and growing together.
00:19:02
Speaker
<unk> Okay. i will pray for us. Father God, thank you for today. Thank you for giving us a teachable spirit. I just ask for help from the Holy Spirit, our helper, just a bigger awareness of how the Holy Spirit is with us every second of every day in just help us to press into knowing you more than anything else. And when we spend that time with you, you will direct our steps. That's just what I keep hearing from you. And so just help me with strength to keep doing that and help me to, when I drift away to want to get in my flesh and control things, just bring me back to your plan for our lives. And I, I know while we have free will, I know that you see the big picture and you know where we're going and i want to live my life your way, not my way. So please help me with that God and help.
00:19:51
Speaker
every listener, wherever they're at, that, you know, whether they believe in you or they don't, I just pray they take one step to getting to know you. Thank you for just your love and your grace in our life. In Jesus name. Amen.
00:20:03
Speaker
Amen. Amen. Awesome.
