Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Daily Brentford Podcast with myself, Daniel, where today we will be looking ahead to the visit of Newcastle to the G-Tech at the weekend. Just before we get going, guys, we're a brand new company, so we're looking for your support over the coming season and beyond as we look to bring you the best and most in-depth coverage across the entire network. So then, Newcastle United visit the G-Tech at the weekend. I um described this game as quite similar to how I thought of the Villa game um in our earlier Villa preview, I believe, in that Villa and Newcastle are two very good teams. They're two teams who should be challenging for Europe. Newcastle in the Champions League last season. Villa in the Champions League this season. And having said that, they are two teams who have been a little bit inconsistent this season.

Key Player Returns and Lineup Considerations

00:01:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
may be underperforming in the league slightly this season although we all know the area that Brentford and Newcastle and Villa are are in in the table is very very tight so that could soon change and obviously Newcastle's result at um St James's Park against Liverpool on Wednesday night will give them plenty to be positive about Let's have a look into the team news then. Thomas Frank is hopeful to see Christian Norguard back and possibly Christopher Iyer, although he puts a higher chance of Norguard playing and being back than Iyer. Now, I don't know what to make of this. I but i believe him when when he says Norguard's more like than Iyer. That means I think that Iyer is probably very unlikely to feature
00:01:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
and In terms of Norgar, I very much hope he features. I think my confidence levels would rise slightly if he did feature. um But if he doesn't, there's there's going to be another issue there um as to who plays against Janelle, because Thomas Ranks also said that Matthias Jensen will be a couple of weeks away.
00:02:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we have Norguard, I think like the Villa game, like I suggested before that, this is a game where you play Norguard and you're knelt together and as an extra defensive screen. Although we're at home, Newcastle is still a very, very good team. That'll be the best team that we faced at the G-Tech this season so far. And I think it is just very, very important that we stay in the game and we don't concede multiple goals in quick succession.
00:02:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
like we did at Villa, like we've done at Tottenham this season, like we've done on various other occasions um this season and last season as well for for the matter of fact. If they don't start though, there is an issue which Brent Finito addressed and the solution is not an easy one in my mind. I think one Option if nor guard Jensen and I are all out is to possibly drop you know, sorry drop dams guard back into that Left-hand side roll next to you know, it's as like the box to box player So he'll he'll get forward he'll get back, but he'll ultimately dictate the game from slightly deeper something similar to what Jensen did last week against Lester and I thought it worked really well and
00:03:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Damsguard can play that role as well.

Defensive Strategies Against Newcastle

00:03:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he has on one occasion this season. I agree that it's not ideal because I like Damsguard as a number 10. I like him in the pockets. I like what he can do going forward. I think everything good we do comes through him, but I still think he'll be able to do that from deep. I still think he can create chances from deep. And I just think in terms of positioning, in terms of leading the press, because he's very good at that as well.
00:04:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
knowing when to press and in terms of supporting, you know, I think that perhaps is the best solution, especially given that um obviously we saw from Jarmolek in midweek that perhaps that side of the game, the mental side of the game, the knowing when to press, how to press is a position that is maybe slightly missing from his game at the moment, which is is quite normal for a young player.
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and I don't see Macoma starting this one either, being thrown into the deep end for just his second Premier League appearance. There's another question that I want to address and that is, do we have to start considering Ethan Pinnett's place in the team? I suspect not yet, given that Ben Mee would be the centre back on the bench and if we're saying Ben Mee's legs are starting to go then ben So if we're saying Ethan Pinnock's legs are starting to go, then Ben Mee is in a similar boat. Obviously Ben Mee's a couple of years older, further down the line, was a brilliant, brilliant player for us a couple of years ago. But I think from his lack of minutes this season and what we have seen from him in the cup, where he has been a little bit slower at times, he looks a little bit more lethargic um than he used to, which again, no no no criticism of him. It it comes with age, and I think.
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
It seems like, given his lack of league minutes, that him and Thomas Frank both kind of accepted his role in the team this season. It's is' more of a support role and I'm sure he's a very good...
00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
he's a very good option to have in the dressing room and he's a very good influence on the young players and people like Nathan Collins who are playing in his position and obviously c can still learn a thing or two from Ben, me.

Newcastle's Threats and Brentford's Challenges

00:06:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um The other option would be to to bring Vandenberg back inside as a centre back and bring Mads Roslev in but again in terms of keeping the ball, in terms of trying to play out
00:06:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Although I don't think Rossev is a bad defender, I'd rather have Pinnock in the team and have Vandenberg at right back than I would have Vandenberg at centre back and Mas Rossev in at right back.
00:06:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
In terms of Newcastle, they have a number of really good players these days. um Alexander Isaac and Anthony Gordon are probably the two key players to luck out for. They can both be extremely dangerous on their dead, although Newcastle have struggled a little bit for goals this season. If those two are on form, I think they can score goals against anybody as they proved against Liverpool with both of them getting on the score sheet. The likes of Bruno Grimourez and Tenali and Longstaff and Willough in the midfield. A solid Bruno especially can take the game. He can be physical. that They're a very physical team, Newcastle. And I think they will be difficult to beat. And that's why again, I think
00:07:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
we need a strong midfield for this one up against the likes of Bruno in there otherwise we could get easily overrun and obviously Tenali on the ball is also a very very good player. Of course Newcastle this season also have young English full backs in, Lewis Hall and Tino, Liv Remento who have come through this year and look promising, Nick Pope is a good shot stopper as he always has been and They've also got the likes of Harvey Barnes in there, who always seems to score against Brentford. I know I said that about Ollie Watkins, but I think the same applies for Harvey Barnes. and He doesn't always start for them, but I think he is a threat and a very good player. um Be interested to see if he does start, whether that means Gordon moves over to the other side. After the break then, I will be going into our previous visits against Newcastle and analyzing how I think this one might turn out at the weekend.
00:09:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part two of the Daily Brentford podcast with myself, Daniel. So then let's get into the stats and look deeper into our weekend clash against Newcastle at the G-Tech. So having beaten Leicester in our game at home last week,
00:09:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle are now the last team which we are yet to be in the Premier League. We have obviously had more meetings against Newcastle because Leicester had been relegated in between the time we had failed to beat them. Newcastle, in fact, they must be our ultimate Premier League bogey team because we only have one point to show from our six meetings with them, which was the very first meeting, which was a 3-3 draw at St James's Park. I remember that game, it was Quite a mad game from what I remember. I remember Francon Yeka scoring that day. I don't i don't know why, but that that is my key memory from that day.
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Last season Brentford found themselves 3-0 down. I think it was the last home game of the season or the second last. I think it may have been the last day of the season. Brentford with 3-0 down at home towards the end of last season at some point anyway. ah Before a slight second half improvement which all the game end 4-2 to Newcastle. Obviously Ivan Toney misses only Brentford penalty.
00:10:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
against Newcastle as well in the fixture of the GTEC the season before. So there is a lot of history against Newcastle that's not too good. It dates back even before the famous Newcastle takeover, Brentford's first game, and sorry, Eddie Howell's first game at Newcastle was also against Brentford.
00:11:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I can completely understand how going to St. James's Park is a difficult away game to go to. It's a very good atmosphere there. The away fans are in the gods, as we will be when we go there um for our quarterfinal of the Carabao Cup in a week and a half time. um But at the G-Tech, perhaps it could be different this time. We will see. I think a lot of it depends on what Newcastle side will turn up.
00:11:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
last week away at Crystal Palace I was shocked to see despite them drawing the game and very very coming very close to winning it through the Palace scoring a late equalizer they only had one shot away um which I think is crazy it's a crazy stat for anyone to just have one shot away especially a Newcastle team going to Palace who could have been considered as favorites for that game um so that and Eddie Howe said in the in the after after part of that game said that um He felt that they did well until the final third and then did not create chances from that. So I think that shows some of the problems Newcastle maybe suffer with this season. Having said that, we all know that they gave Liverpool a really good game in midweek drawing 3-0. They had plenty of chances. Isaac and Gordon were back on form. So... You can look at that two ways. Are they back? Is the likes of Isaac and Gordon, who have may have been a bit inconsistent this season? Are they hitting form?
00:12:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
um At the right time, or are they? um Or is that going to take a lot out of them? Obviously the the likes of Isaac in the past, the stuff with injury issues. Callum Wilson was on the bench for Newcastle in midweek, so could we see him and instead? Perhaps I.
00:13:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
think it would be doubtful. um But you never know that game could have taken a lot out of them. I know he said the same about Villa, um about their defeat at Chelsea last weekend, which happened a day after Brentford played. um but But you never know. And um we will see um how that turns out and what Newcastle side turn up at the weekend. Newcastle traditionally, even if they are struggling a little in front of goal,
00:13:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
quite solid, quite difficult to score against, quite physical. They have some big guys in there, the likes of Dan Byrne. I'm not sure if the likes of Botman are fit at the moment, but they've got options and and and they are strong. Fabian Cher as well as a good centre-back scored the late goal against Liverpool in midweek.
00:13:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
so I think this will be a difficult one and and I think it will clearly be Brentford's most difficult game at home so far this season. Every single point Brentford have gained this season in the league, home or away, obviously this is a one point away, Everton have come against the bottom eight teams in the Premier League. So this is a test and Villa was a test and we we haven't managed to pass any of those types of tests so far this season.
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's crucial that we set that midfield up correctly. I think Thomas Rank has an easy decision to make if Norguard's back in, but if not, it is crucial that he makes the right selection choices. It is crucial that we are solid at the back. It is really important. We don't let this game run away from us and we don't let Newcastle overload us. I don't want to see the likes of Pinnock in one-on-ones. I want to see Collins there supporting him.
00:14:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
We don't always have to be super brave. Obviously it's great if you win playing that way, it's great to watch, but ultimately the results are the most important. And there needs to be some adaptation, I think, against the better touch sides in the league and and Newcastle are clearly one of them. And obviously we traveled to Chelsea away next week as well before facing Newcastle or away too. So I think it's also important for Brentford to make a mark ahead of that quarterfinal a

week and a half. I think that is a,
00:15:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
really big game and if he if I sat here right now saying I could i can only take Brentford winning one of those I put i probably go to the quarterfinal. I'm a dreamer and I think Brentford if they were to get into a major cup final would be absolutely amazing. um I do suspect Thomas Frank may prioritize this game in terms of The side he is likely to to put out, um I would like to see in this game, someone like Carvalho starting in Dam's Guide's number 10 position, if Dam's Guide has moved deeper, I think that is maybe the midfield set-up I'd go with, but it's always going to be difficult, and I still don't think that's ideal against the Newcastle side, I think.
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
no god we really want him to be back in the side so then prediction time I'm gonna go with two different predictions if Norgard is playing and if he is back in the side I will go with two all if he's not playing I will probably go maybe another 3-1 Newcastle or 2-0 Newcastle i I can see them shutting us down. I can see them scoring a couple of goals in quick succession again. Um, and I, and I wouldn't be too confident, um, in that scenario. I think the, the Villa games probably taken out us a bit. I think it's another reality check as to is exactly where we're at as a team. And I think given that we've only got points against the bottom eight, you know, where we're at at the moment seems to be above those and and below

the rest. So, you know, mid table and that's a good place for him to be, but,
00:16:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
it would be great if we can find a way to push on this weekend. So those are my two predictions based on whether Christian Norga starts or not in terms of goal scorers. I think Brian and Brimmer will get back on the score sheet this weekend. I think we'll see an improved performance from him against one of the sides who are linked with him the most. I'd say them and Liverpool are probably linked with his signature the most. um And then I will go with Fabio Carvalho. He'll start and he'll get on the score sheet um potentially um or or come off the bench and get on the score sheet. I think he deserves more minutes and I think he's got the quality in there.
