Post-Holiday Catch-Up

00:00:54
Speaker
Welcome, welcome. Where'd you go there? What is this? There you go. We should be one and two, not one and four. There you go. Welcome back to the show. Yeah. After a holiday hiatus. Yeah. Um, no show last week. I had the COVID. Yeah. Well, uh, it's going around. Yeah. Um,
00:01:19
Speaker
Apparently it's like really going around. Yeah. We know a couple of people who've had it, you know, right around here just recently. Do you know people? Oh, we know Lou. Oh yeah. And yeah, I can't think of the name right now, but it's a, it's one or two people actually, um, through, uh, through Andrea. Hmm.
00:01:48
Speaker
Yeah, it's a big surge they're saying right now. So yeah, my head is fried. It's been a week. Oh man.
00:02:08
Speaker
Um, so yeah, we're here first week of the new year. Um, trying to think where we, where we left off last episode was with, uh, with Tim. I was going to say was, was Tim our last episode or do we fly solo one episode? I can't remember. So it must've been with Tim. Yeah. Let's see.
00:02:34
Speaker
Yeah. Check it out. I was just wearing my true trade carpentry sweatshirt. Yeah. December

Current Projects Overview

00:02:40
Speaker
22nd feels like way more than two weeks ago. Yeah. Doesn't it? Yeah. Those four day weeks really threw me off too. Yeah. Yeah. This week was like we were here one day. Yeah. Yeah. I mean tomorrow's Friday already. Yep. Um,
00:03:06
Speaker
So yeah, last we were here, we were talking to Tim. We had Christmas since then, New Year's. Um, then plugging away in the shop. What was it? So Tim was here. I don't think if it was a Tuesday or a Wednesday, I feel like he came early in the week. Um,
00:03:29
Speaker
But Tim was here and then that week we wrapped up the Notre Dame table that we were building and the Bankette that we built. Yeah. For the cold brew coffee company. Yeah. Cali cold company.
00:03:47
Speaker
coffee shop down in brick. So we shut down there. Well, Thursday, Thursday or Wednesday, we delivered that table, um, which came up pretty good. You know, the stools, not the best size material for the stools. So they had a, not the most stable footprint. Um, but you know, we were working with those, uh, already portion pieces of wood.
00:04:15
Speaker
Yeah. So, you know, they didn't want to cut the, cut the boards. So being nine by 24, um, not the best, you know, size to translate to legs. So, you know, we delivered that. Uh, then we shut down to brick. We put in the bench. Um,
00:04:42
Speaker
which went pretty smooth. Yeah. You know, we had some issues with, you know, it had six outlets in it and the electrician only ramped five wires. So we had to basically run a string from, you know, call it outlet three to outlet four. And then, you know, as we're packing up, we realized that the string had got pulled through. Yes.
00:05:09
Speaker
Oh man. So luckily we were able to get that back. Yeah. Actually a designer on that job. Lindsay, she was supposed to be on the show last week. You know, we, we hash that out last, last Wednesday. And then Wednesday I found out that I had COVID. So we had to cancel with her, but she is going to come next week.
00:05:32
Speaker
That'll be cool. Yeah. So we got her next week. If you have any questions for an interior designer, that'll be our second interior designer. And, and she knows the third woman that we've had on the show. Yeah. Um, equal opportunity over here. Yeah. So that should be good. Um, you know, I think the last one was, was pretty popular hearing, you know, people wanted to hear the, the side of the interior designer for sure.
00:06:02
Speaker
Yeah. Um, let's see the land last week. So we had Christmas and we wrapped that up day before day before Christmas Eve. No, that was Friday. Christmas Eve was Sunday back in the

Project Challenges and Solutions

00:06:22
Speaker
shop on Tuesday. Um, when did I go down to the salon?
00:06:30
Speaker
Uh, that must've been Wednesday. Yeah.
00:06:38
Speaker
Yeah. Just button that place up, put some drawers in. Put some, just fixed up one of their, what is it? Like a photo backdrop wall? Yeah. Yep. That, you know, they never use because the wheels didn't roll right because the guy who we know, the original ones on, they were off of like a
00:07:04
Speaker
a roller skate. No, well, not even like a bed frame that he found in the trash or something. That's what reminded me of like those plastic, those hard plastic wheels off of a bed frame. It was pretty, it was pretty gross taking them off too, I have to say.
00:07:24
Speaker
How did it move around with those new ones? Oh, nice, nice. Plus the handles are on there. Yeah. Yeah. So they wanted some handles. They want some wheels. They wanted to turn a door, door base into a drawer base. We did some, um, a full brand like Lego boxes or meta boxes, whatever the hell you want to call them. Yeah. They're not the smoothest operating. I have to be honest.
00:07:51
Speaker
No, no. You think it's the slides or the might've been the conditions or, you know, if they're slightly just like a hair too big. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I guess they're like Lego box because meta boxes like what we used on the, on the stations. Yeah. Like bigger bucks.
00:08:24
Speaker
What the hell happened Tuesday? Tuesday, I think we were just working on Donna's job. I did all the finishing for the Historical Society on Wednesday.
00:08:44
Speaker
Yeah. So Tuesday you fit the glass, all that. So we had the, the two cabinets for the historical society. Yeah. We built those on Thursday and Friday or Friday. I think I put them together. Hmm. Thursday and Friday. It's Thursday and Friday. I was out. Yeah. Um,
00:09:12
Speaker
Yeah, let's see. Yeah, what day did it rain? I came in, there was water. Forgot to tell you about that. Oh, there was. Yeah, that's why the vacuum was over here upside down. Yeah, that was another great. We got a big rainstorm coming on Tuesday, apparently. Oh, man. Yeah. That was one of the gutters clogged again. Yeah, maybe I'll go out. I'll go up there tomorrow and take a look.
00:09:42
Speaker
Yeah, maybe we got a clock in the downspout. I don't know. Um, yeah, Tuesday we were wrapping up that the, um, you know, the fabrication of those, uh, fuck display cabinets.
00:10:03
Speaker
display cabinets. Yeah. That's what they are. Yeah. Um, wrap, you were wrapping up fabrication of those. I'm still working on this, uh, Oak Oak job, the rolling cabinets. Um, then Wednesday. Yeah. I started finishing that. You know, I was able to, to thank God able to get two coats on that. Um, could have used a third for sure, but
00:10:28
Speaker
They wanted it by the end of the year and basically doing it as a, as a favor. So anyway, come to find out. We deliver that on, uh, it was Monday. It was Tuesday, I guess. Right. Um, we came back. Was it Tuesday or was it yesterday?
00:10:49
Speaker
No, it was Tuesday. Yeah. Yeah. So Tuesday we deliver those, uh, down to the historical society, which is just like, I don't know, half a mile away. Um, so we're looking around, blah, blah, blah. We bring them in and, um,
00:11:09
Speaker
And we're still talking. I'm like, all right. Yep. Got to get back to the shop. And he's like, all right. Yeah. So, uh, whenever, you know, you have the other, the other ones ready, uh, no problem. You know, you don't, don't worry about it till like St. Patrick's Day. I'm like, what was this guy talking about? Yeah. I was like, well, well,
00:11:27
Speaker
Because he's a he's an older guy. He's obviously I'm not gonna say he's losing it, but obviously he's older. So, you know, people say stuff that's not necessarily accurate. Yeah.
00:11:44
Speaker
So we're driving back. I'm like, I better look at my notes. I'm going back. I'm like, Oh my God. It was, we were supposed to build four cabinets, um, which just, you know, symptom of too long between, you know, uh, bidding the job and getting paid and just too much going on. I think that was when we had all those jobs on the board too, that they were here.
00:12:10
Speaker
And we were scarring around. Uh, was it? No, I mean, you know, I just, I got, I got too much on my plate. They just slipped through the cracks. Um, so building two more, um, we'll have them done before St. Patrick's day and we're going to get them done out of here. You know, while we, we, we don't have a ton going on right now, we're wrapping up that Oak job. Um, apparently work.
00:12:41
Speaker
Donna Arlene, not really. Keith is going to lose his mind with the drinking sounds. There you go. Wrapping up Donna's job. We're working on a bench seat, which we finally were able to temple it. That might've been wet last Wednesday or Tuesday. Right. Cause we were going to go, we were going to do it on Friday.
00:13:10
Speaker
Yeah, the plan was if we finished the install to stop there on Friday. So yeah, we ended up going there Tuesday after Christmas, brought the cabinet boxes. It's a frame inset bay window seat. So we built the cabinet boxes. I want to bring them over there.
00:13:31
Speaker
put them up against the wall and make a template with quarter inch for the top, just so that we had it to make the face frame and make the countertop. So we're working on that. I had to glue up the styles for the 40 degree corners and the outside 45 degree corners. So I got those glued up. So now I can build that face frame.
00:13:59
Speaker
Uh, we're going to be doing new doors in that. So that has, uh, two drawers and then it's got, uh, three panels. Yeah. So those will be new doors. We have to add like a little OG molding to them to match the kitchen. Um, and we're doing some light discussions. Uh, basically a client bought square, um,
00:14:28
Speaker
Like what do you call those in ceiling lights? Recess lighting. They're retrofit kits. She bought square retrofit kits and they're only like the back plates are like just under their square. She wanted square ones. So she had six inch hi-hats in there before. And these don't quite cover the
00:14:54
Speaker
the hole, you know, cause they're square now. So we're going to make a little discussion. There's 13 or 14

Keensburg History and Anecdotes

00:15:03
Speaker
of them. Um, it's basically like an, maybe they're half five inch. I don't know. Like eight by eight, maybe they were eight, eight inch holes. I forget. I forget what the exact size is through here. Yeah. It looks like eight by eight.
00:15:29
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. They were six inch and the squares must be, I don't know, slightly less. Anyway, there's six inch holes that need to be covered. So we're making these eight by eight with a hole in the middle, uh, discussions. And finally got a material of the original material that we ordered. She wanted metal, um, because they're like a brushed,
00:15:54
Speaker
light, you know, the trim ring is brushed. And the first thing we ordered from Richelieu turned out to be total BS. It was just like a gray almost look painted.
00:16:08
Speaker
Yeah, like a gray foam metal laminate. The idea was to use laminate so that it was thin and they could just put it behind the light and it would just press it up against the ceiling. And she had or has, I should say, some metal accents on the media unit that's right there in the
00:16:30
Speaker
whatever that is, living room. So we got the panel lamp stuff from Richelieu. It was no good. So she came by, then she left. She called Wilson Art because she thought that the guy had used Wilson Art on the media unit.
00:16:49
Speaker
So she gave me a number. I got a sample. It came. It was like the same crap, you know, basically like fake metal that didn't really look like metal. Um, so then actually through our plumber Mike was able to, he was able to get in touch with the guy who built her original thing because long story short, she told us the shop that did it. He happened to say in conversation, his buddy worked at the shop and we're like,
00:17:18
Speaker
Oh shit, that's the same shop. So anyway, he talked to the guy and found out, you know, it was some sort of, uh, for Mike, a deco metal. He couldn't remember the exact, exact color. Um, so I called up our, this is like a whole rig and roll for like, it was a BS job, like no money in it at all.
00:17:37
Speaker
called up our worth rep, got two samples of the deco metal, the brushed aluminum and brushed stainless. So then she came and picked those up on Wednesday. And she said that the stainless one matches. And so then I got a price and it's like 600 something dollars a sheet, maybe $700 a sheet, because it's, you know, it's got actual stainless on it, I guess.
00:18:08
Speaker
So she had previously reached out to somebody else, Andy Grossman, asking if he, you know, might know what this material might be. He said, oh, try chem metal. So when I told her the price, she said, well, let's see about the chem metal. So he emailed the worth guy again and two samples showed up today and
00:18:44
Speaker
These are a lot closer than the other thing. This is, this looks like real. Yeah. Well, the one right there that's still on the table is the one that matches the lights. Um, and you could see that that cam metal one is not, not a match to that.
00:19:04
Speaker
The Formica is very like a pewter kind of color, the stainless one, whereas the Chem Metal, I didn't even take, that's not, that's just like solid aluminum, we're definitely not buying that. But the Chem Metal is like half the price, but.
00:19:20
Speaker
She's out of town. They're on vacation. She's like, well, what do you think you have? And what would you do? I said, I would just go with the one that matches. You know what I mean? Like you're going to lose sleep over, you know, 300 bucks. Get the one that that matches the light exactly because this other one doesn't match. Doesn't match the one that you said matches. So yeah.
00:19:47
Speaker
And she's very particular. So Oh yeah, it would bugger. Yeah. These are pretty cool. Yeah. There's laminate with actual metal. Yeah. Um, yeah, you could see a little thin, uh, face of it.
00:20:16
Speaker
Let me see what... Speaking of Keith, I haven't talked to him or heard from him in a long time. I wonder how he's doing. $667 a sheet.
00:20:45
Speaker
Reach out, Keith. Let me know how you're doing. Oh, here's Lindsey. He's to come up with a solution for the floor tow at Kelly Cole company.
00:20:59
Speaker
float the concrete. Yeah. Those gaps are huge. I mean, the floor is so crazy. Yeah. Concrete floor that was, um, previously had some kind of, yeah, floor covering on it glued down. So they ground, ground the floor, grinded the floor. Ground sounds weird there.
00:21:21
Speaker
They ground the floor and all kinds of dips. It's, yeah, it was beyond scribe-ability, especially on a, you know, it's a commercial job. There's no budget in there for the 25 foot long scribe to the floor. So yeah, I don't know what, what they're going to want to do some sort of,
00:21:52
Speaker
like a shoe molding, but the gap is like an inch in some spots and none in others. So I don't know. Yeah. I think she mentioned something I wanted like just a straight profile too. Yeah. I mean it's laminate. So that's really all we can do. But you know, there's no hiding an inch here and nothing over here. Um, it's, it's going to look worse I think, but
00:22:22
Speaker
We'll see what they want to do. They got to be open for Thanksgiving rush. Yeah, that was that was funny. And then it was like second week of December and we were there in the third week of December and they were nowhere near like nowhere near opening. Not even close.
00:22:46
Speaker
No, I did. They even have the cabinets set back in the, in the, that, uh, behind, uh, you know, in the service area. I remember they had them pulled away from the wall. I couldn't remember, but, uh, no machinery out there or anything yet. Oh yeah. No, no, because they hadn't put in the countertops or anything. Um,
00:23:15
Speaker
So, yeah, I don't know. She didn't see it. She didn't like my joke. So, yeah, working on getting this book job all sprayed. I like the look of that finish. It's kind of a subdued. Yeah, it looks less
00:23:43
Speaker
Waterborne mm-hmm this time around. It's definitely a warmer It's got a warmer look to it, which is nice hopefully The client likes it finish on the historical society stuff was like Public school I call it public school oak. Yeah, it was like that shellac kind of look. Yeah It's right in over there Yeah
00:24:12
Speaker
I guess he's going to take stuff, get rid of some other display cases and put those out. Um, he was saying something about one being too tall. I think that one right up front, cause he wants people to be able to look and see, you know, into the, into the space. He's messing with the feng shui. Oh yeah.
00:24:43
Speaker
But John knows quite a bit about Kingsburg in the area. He is a font of information. Yeah, I would say that.
00:24:55
Speaker
who's going to dispute anything he says. So it's kind of easy to be an expert when you got nobody to know as a thing. Yeah. Like I'm not going to be like, Oh, that's not true. It's like, yeah, I have no idea about any of this stuff. So I didn't even think about that. He can say whatever he wants and I'm just going to be like, wow. Yeah. He could be spinning total tails. Yeah. It could be total BS. Yeah. That's funny. That's going to be in my head now. Next time he has had some stuff that was questionable.
00:25:28
Speaker
Yeah. Those postcards were really cool. It was all those old postcards. And yeah, I mean, there's definitely a lot of history in, in, uh, this area, you know, the whole Bay shore was, uh, was a resort basically going back, I think all the way back until like the, maybe the late 1800s, like the 1890s up until, um, like the fifties, I think.
00:25:56
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, I'm pretty familiar with the honeymooners. I don't remember Jackie Gleason ever mentioned in Kingsburg. I mean,

Conclusion and Next Episode Preview

00:26:08
Speaker
not to say that it's impossible. Yeah. Cause one of one of his little tidbits was that Jackie Gleason used to summer down here.
00:26:26
Speaker
Jackie Gleason, who was his emcee for three years in Newark, made a guest appearance at Kingsburg's club, Miami. Wow. And he, John did mention the club, Miami. Yeah. Not with Jackie Gleason though. No. New York times the worst. You can't read anything. They don't let you read anything for free. Oh, here we go. What is this from? Uh, 1973.
00:26:58
Speaker
Look at this. The beach stretches away on each side, like a ribbon of soiled cloth. That pretty much sums it up. Oh my God. Oh, the Kingsburg, the poor man's playground. Oh, uh, boardwalk was built around 1910.
00:27:27
Speaker
There are places like big hearted owls where for a nickel you can spin a wheel for a basket of meat or a can of ham. And a few other stands where the grand prize is a carton of camels.
00:27:40
Speaker
Surgeon General's report hasn't reached Keensburg, but when it does, the natives and visitors will only shrug and point toward Raway, where Dutch boy paints, where Dutch boy paints is, or South Amboy, where Carbarundum makes abrasives. Wow, I didn't know that. Carbarundum, whose very name is a cough. Blah, blah, blah. Keensburg is victim of the Gordon State Parkway, which carries traffic past it at 70 miles an hour to point further and points further down the shore.
00:28:11
Speaker
Well, he doesn't really paint a glowing picture of Kingsburg from the seventies. That's for sure. Wow. Yeah. I mean, there ain't anything glowing to say. Right in front of my face.
00:28:35
Speaker
Segal have been carted off to the doctor with a blood pressure count of 200 today. Blah, blah, blah. The boy Sinatra who sang at his club, Miami. He isn't feeling immoral, but he remembers the good old days. The boy Sinatra.
00:28:57
Speaker
who sang in his Club Miami after he'd broken up with Dorsey, Vic DeMone, Cab Calloway, Peg Leg Bates, Billy Daniels, Sarah Vaughan, Kristy Jorgensen, Jackie Gleason, who was his MC for three years in Newark and who once made a guest appearance at Kingsburg's Club Miami.
00:29:18
Speaker
He's talking about Frank Sinatra. I guess so. He did mess, mess, mention, uh, Christine Jorgensen too, which I'd never, I'd never heard of. He was optimistic about Kingsburg's future. Read the first line of the next paragraph. So you see all is not lost that Kingsburg has a future as long as there are poor in the greater metropolitan area.
00:29:49
Speaker
of the energy and resources to get away from it all. The Caribbean, it's not. Neither is 135th Street in Amsterdam Avenue. Yeah. Real quick, we better thank our illustrious sponsors. Yes, indeed.
00:30:16
Speaker

00:30:44
Speaker
Located in Kansas, rich carbide tools provides high quality products with outstanding customer service at a fair price. What are you cutting? Paul actually texted me on Friday and said he's been enjoying listening to the show. That's cool.
00:31:07
Speaker
man, I'm, I'm reading, uh, you know, we got the big screen up and there's a New York times article and you know, we were searching for Jackie Gleason. I'm reading this, you know, out of the corner of my eye. It's just, it's quite a, an article. It's unflattering to say the least. Don't skip the penny arcades where for a nickel, you can buy a postcard size picture. John Wayne, when he was 11 and for a dime shoot Japanese planes out of the air. Oh man.
00:31:39
Speaker
Wow. Oh, what's this? Um, yeah, the internet has just about everything. Kingsburg shadow. I'm Jackie Gleason on the honeymooners. This, uh, all the, uh,
00:32:13
Speaker
Hmm. I don't care that much to dig this deep to find it, but apparently it might be true. Yeah. Oh, go back down to a couple of Jack, he believes in quipping. Oh, that's hair conditioning for you. The Trump player. Right.
00:32:38
Speaker
Well, it's, it's undecided, but it, it leans towards truth. Asbury park man has been arrested for shooting at a passing car in Keensburg. Oh geez. It's, it's pretty quiet nowadays. Becky Gleason, Copacabana.
00:33:07
Speaker
Yeah. Ginsburg. Because I guess. Oh, they're just,
00:33:36
Speaker
in succession, succession, succession, in succession. This says something, Boardwalk, Keensburg. And then the next line is Gleason, Jackie. Go back to New York. What kind of listing is that? It's billboard. Oh, Detroit, Gilbert Flow performing on the Boardwalk, Keensburg, New Jersey. Nice.
00:34:04
Speaker
Well, nonetheless, Keensburg has a rich history. Rich. Yeah. And if you're in town, if you happen to be in town on a Saturday, Sunday, visit the historical society museum. Yeah. I think it's open 12 to four or something like that. Right. I'm not sure. Yeah. Saturdays and Sundays.
00:34:28
Speaker
and poke fun, but John's real nice guy. Exactly. And, uh, I'd have him on the podcast, but it'd probably be like about nine hours long. Yeah. I was going to say seven, but you're probably correct. Yeah. Full day.
00:34:43
Speaker
Um, speaking of full day, I got, I got all those parts first coded, um, in enduro pro series clear met polyurethane. And, um, between tomorrow, tomorrow John's coming by because we got to shoot it today's craftsman video. Cause that's another thing that's been like, that's been like three weeks.
00:35:06
Speaker
Three weeks, two weeks. This is the third week. Yeah. Two weeks without putting out a video, which sucks, but it is what it is.
00:35:19
Speaker
Where the hell was I going with this? Full day. Oh yeah. It's going to be like a, not a full day, but it's going to be, you know, probably a solid two hours of scuffing with that. You need a sander. Um, so I want to thank our other sponsor. You need a, so I'm going to be using that three by four sander on all these doors, face frames,
00:35:41
Speaker
We have all these mirror wall frames and panels. So it's a lot of, you know, panel sanding and the doors have these grills where I'll be able to get into the middle of them, not not the outer portions because they're little basically two inch, two inch wide squares on the outside.
00:36:05
Speaker
but yeah, it's going to be, that's where you have to use those little blocks. Yeah. It's going to be a lot of sanding. Yeah. And even, even the smallest, uh, big kid block is not, not that small. Yeah. I'll make some blocks and
00:36:21
Speaker
Um, one of the things I did, uh, Oh yeah. Cause I was sanding while you're out and I hooked up the vacuum attachment to that other sander. Oh yeah. Yeah. Um, that's a cool thing about those. You need is, is that, you know, the same sander can either be a non-vac or a vac as depending on if you install the, uh, the thing or not. Yeah. I don't know who goes non-vac, but yeah. Crazy. And, um,
