Podcast Introduction and Host Welcome

00:00:09
Marcus Ramtohul
We're back with the daily English Premier League Global Sports Podcast Network, and maybe a few voices you haven't heard in a while. I'm Marcus Rantol. I'm joined by JupTage.
00:00:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, hello.
00:00:21
Marcus Ramtohul
Welcome

Marcus' Homecoming and Football Stats

00:00:22
Marcus Ramtohul
back. So i had I had my homecoming yesterday with wonderful Tom Jolly, who couldn't avoid going down some stats rabbit holes. Let's see how we get on today. How have you been?
00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, good man. it's It's been a long time. I think even since I lasted a podcast, it's been about two and a half weeks. Since I've been on one with you, it's probably been about two and a half months. So yeah, good to be back.
00:00:45
Marcus Ramtohul
Yeah, and it's excellent

Liverpool vs Chelsea: Weekend Game Predictions

00:00:46
Marcus Ramtohul
timing. I'm so glad you're back because as much as I'd love to talk about your fantasy team and how things are doing, ah we had a big game for both of us over the weekend. We will get into Liverpool, Chelsea later on today, and I can have some some gloating time. ah But right now, as we record, more UEFA Champions League games are taking place. You guys know my opinions about the new format, so I won't dwell on that too much. But yeah, UEFA Champions League is back.

Arsenal's Performance Concerns

00:01:13
Marcus Ramtohul
Arsenal were in action yesterday. Chuck Tage, I know you are actually in London covering a lot of football at the moment, including the upcoming Arsenal Liverpool fixture. What did you think about yesterday's game and Arsenal's performances of late?
00:01:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, I'd say concerning is the main thing because they're still winning games. You know, they beat Shakhtar, but their performance levels have really dropped. And I know that they've got a few big injuries, Odegar's out, Sakhar's out, obviously Saliba suspended. So they've got to keep a few key players missing, but still.
00:01:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
It feels like, tactically, our test has opted for a bit more of a defensive approach, you know, playing maybe three defensive midfielders, the four centerbacks. And I know that fans on social media haven't been so happy with it.
00:02:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've even seen a couple of Arsenal fans calling for our test out. I know that.
00:02:08
Marcus Ramtohul
Oh.
00:02:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know that sounds crazy, but I have genuinely seen that. we

Key Match: Arsenal vs Liverpool

00:02:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
see that That's just a ridiculous leap. But I think that with the way Liverpool are playing, and we know that City always get better you know after Christmas, if if Arsenal lose to Liverpool on Sunday, there'll be seven points behind Liverpool, seven points behind after nine games. That is unheard of and that gap will only grow as the season goes on. So that game on Sundays absolutely must not lose for them.
00:02:43
Marcus Ramtohul
Yeah, I think it's interesting, because I don't have as much fear about Arsenal's content ah contention rights at the moment. I think, yes, there are injuries. um Yes, they're in a different form.
00:02:54
Marcus Ramtohul
But as you said, you know they are still getting results, which is what championship winning sides do. You have a different form, but you still collect three points. I think um defensive injuries and dismissals, Saliba, I think Calfiore is injured as well.
00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:03:08
Marcus Ramtohul
That's a big ask of them.
00:03:13
Marcus Ramtohul
But I wouldn't necessarily write them off just yet.

Liverpool's Surprising Season Start

00:03:16
Marcus Ramtohul
What I would say though, you know, Liverpool have really surprised me with how how much they've just gone straight into having a really good season so far.
00:03:25
Marcus Ramtohul
And actually, you look at the injury list, you look at there's likely to be no sack of Arsenal.
00:03:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah. Hmm.
00:03:30
Marcus Ramtohul
Now, I think the pressure's on. I think you have to look at that Arsenal team that's going to play that first 11 and say Liverpool should get three points from that fixture.
00:03:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree. I think it'll be a big test for Arteta and, you know, in previous seasons, maybe when he's come up against City at the Etihad, he's opted for a let's take the draw approach. I think this would be a smart game to take a draw. I really do because given the context, I think a draw would be a great result if you can stay in it, you know, go neck neck and neck with Liverpool, take the point.

Arsenal's Squad and Injury Challenges

00:04:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's a good thing if they lose that morale is on the floor.
00:04:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like I mentioned about the points gap. I mean, they could still win it. I really don't see it happening. I don't know how close ah back to full fitness Saka is. um But I don't know if he'll be fit to start given that he's missed a few games now and it's such a huge clash. I've seen as well a few Arsenal fans want to see more of Ethan Winery. He's only 16, 17 years old. But fans want to see a bit more positivity from Arteta.
00:04:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
so That game will be so interesting because if it's another Lacklust starting 11 that the fans aren't happy with and there's not the result that thereafter Be interesting to see what the responses
00:04:51
Marcus Ramtohul
Do you think the fans have a right to be upset considering what Arsenal were doing maybe three, four seasons ago?
00:04:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, it's a good question. Personally, I don't think so. I think that Arteta is one of the best managers in the world and he deserves a bit of leeway. I mean, you know, they've only lost one game this season. It sounds a bit ridiculous that we're saying this, but yeah I can also understand a bit of fine frustration.
00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I also think that maybe what it stems from is the fact that Arsenal have been quite lucky over the last two years or so with injuries. They've hardly had any key injuries to players in and at least two years. So I think now that it's piling on a little bit, they don't really know how to react to it. but Obviously, that's where the manager has to come in and be smart with his starting level. And living they've they signed depth. You know, Raheem Sterling came in in the summer. Callifiori came in.
00:05:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, they got a play light in one area on the bench. So, you know, they should be able to handle it. We'll see how the game goes.
00:05:54
Marcus Ramtohul
Yeah, I must agree, you know, we said, we said actually right the beginning of this season, Arsenal's injury record so far has been incredible. They have been incredibly lucky. um They are playing more intense football I think this season than we've ever seen them play, and playing in a very competitive Champions League as well with this new format.
00:06:18
Marcus Ramtohul
So um yeah, I think if there are Arsenal fans out there who are calling for our tetter out, I think they they should probably be a bit more grateful that they're in and about things.
00:06:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:06:28
Marcus Ramtohul
It kind of reminds me of what it was like being a Liverpool fan pre-clop where you kind of went, you know, we are a big club, we've got a history, but really, are we going to do anything anymore?
00:06:38
Marcus Ramtohul
And actually, you know, Count your blessings that you got this far. And I spoke yesterday to Tom about the the departure of PEP, you know, potentially going at the end of this season.
00:06:51
Marcus Ramtohul
And that's the chance, that kind of power vacuum for what Artet has been doing at Arsenal to kind of finally get over the line. And to to start thinking about getting a new manager in when you've only lost one game is, it sounds insane to me.
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it definitely is. Yeah, should be a good game on Sunday.
00:07:12
Marcus Ramtohul
It should be a good game prediction.
00:07:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I feel like Liverpool will win the form that you guys are in compared with the form that Arsenal are in. I'd say 2-1 Liverpool. What do you think?
00:07:23
Marcus Ramtohul
Ah, do you know what, I was going to go 2-1 Liverpool as well. I suppose the only thing that would be, not the only thing, one of the things to be in Arsenal's favour is that but we don't have Alison between the sticks, but I think Kerr has been doing a fantastic job, so I can see us conceding, I can see a Liverpool win, I hope for a Liverpool win.
00:07:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:40
Marcus Ramtohul
It could be a 1-0 draw, I think it's going to be a difficult difficult test, um but as I said, given the Arsenal's state of injuries and and players unavailable, ah It's a game that Liverpool should expect to win.
00:07:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so.
00:07:55
Marcus Ramtohul
ah But before we go into the game that's just happened for Liverpool against your beloved Chelsea, and let's talk about the Global Sports Podcast Network. This podcast is part of the Global Sports Podcast Network, the only network bringing you exclusive daily news and views on your Premier League team, the Premier League, women's football and fantasy football.

The Global Sports Podcast Network, every club, every day. And on to one of the games of of the last match weekend. I didn't think it was the best game of the weekend. I did say I thought Leicester Southampton was was really tasty, and I don't know what's going on with the scheduling of Match of the Day, but that's maybe a discussion for another time.
00:08:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:08:50
Marcus Ramtohul
ah Liverpool chelsea now little came away with three points, a win at Anfield, two run against Chelsea. I suspect Chelsea fans are not too displeased with actually the result, the performance and how things are going.
00:09:05
Marcus Ramtohul
what's ah What are you saying, Chuck Teige?
00:09:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah i mean i think you summed it up quite well i definitely didn't feel discouraged after the game on the contrary i felt quite happy with the way that we played we were in it for most the game it was quite a 50 50 game i think on balance you guys deserve to win uh just you know a few more dangerous chances that you had and I thought that the referee had a ah strange game there was a lot of controversial decisions you know you got the penalty but maybe i should add a penalty a couple minutes before that and maybe we should add a penalty jayden sancho
00:09:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
a little bit after that, then obviously the offside goal that wasn't, no the red card sorry, ah that wasn't given on Adribayo. I felt like the referee really struggled to manage the game and I do think that the atmosphere got on top of him a little bit. I think you guys definitely deserved a penalty and I also agree with the decision not to send off Adribayo, but it just felt like You know, when a game's getting a bit much for the referee and maybe gives a decision just to quell the crowd a little bit, because the penalty that you guys got was given two minutes after the one that Salah didn't get, and that got a huge reaction.
00:10:24
Marcus Ramtohul
Hmm.
00:10:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I don't know if a little bit of that came into it. I didn't think Sanchez was, the way he went in for that tackle on Curtis Jones was completely wild, and he had a terrible game, Robert Sanchez.
00:10:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But yeah, you summed it up nicely and Anzo Mareska did as well after the game in his press conference He was smiling away. He was saying, you know, I was happy with the way that we played ah Not much bad stuff to say in on a spot as well in his post-match thought Said, you know Chelsea have done a great job building the squad the manager they've appointed he thinks that we'll be up there in the next year or two and So there's not not much to be concerned about, but I mean, on the other side of the coin, from a Liverpool perspective, I'd be getting really excited because you're top of the league now, clearly top of the league by a point. You've won seven out of the eight games, arm slot has won 10 out of his 11 games. How do you feel? What do you think is possible this season?

Liverpool's Title Race Outlook

00:11:29
Marcus Ramtohul
I will sum it up by saying cautious optimism. And I think maybe that comes from being a Liverpool fan of a certain age. I mean, the 2020 season, I remember I got to about February and I was messaging my mates going, I think we're going to win the league.
00:11:43
Marcus Ramtohul
And they were like, yeah, of course.
00:11:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:11:47
Marcus Ramtohul
It took a while. No, it's great to see see Liverpool ah flying high. I think something We talked a lot, a lot of people have talked about it. We've talked about it a lot on this this podcast. the The change, as it were, kind of post-clock is the extra bit of control um in the midfield and not necessarily that kind of heavy metal approach to football. There's still a high press. There's still an urgency to win the ball back. what What concerns me, it's still happening for Liverpool, um is this high line and getting caught out.
00:12:21
Marcus Ramtohul
it's there There is, it's very dangerous to think, you know, a lot of times V&R has stepped in and offside's been given but by a whisker, and which I actually don't agree with these kind of, these hairs widths that no one could possibly see with a naked eye. And I think we've been a bit lucky with stuff like that. um I still believe it's Man City's league to win. And I think they've just got that little bit of extra nous about them.
00:12:48
Marcus Ramtohul
the weekend, Johnstone's coming up again to get that winner. That's that's the side of of a champion championship team, I believe. and But at the same time, you're really pleased to see top of the league and great football. I was at Anfield recently for born with game. Everyone's buzzing, everyone's happy. And I think Liverpool do exceptionally well when there's no pressure. Fans are just enjoying themselves.
00:13:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:15
Marcus Ramtohul
There's no expectation to go, right, now we're doing this. How about we win the league? How about we win the Champions League? It's just, let's enjoy playing good football, being top of the league. I do still think that Manchester City have just got that little bit of of extra depth and quality. The only, only thing that made me go, oh,
00:13:36
Marcus Ramtohul
Okay, this weekend was seeing just how good Curtis Jones was in the midfield, and he's not necessarily the first midfielder on the team sheet, even though he's a quality player and he he loves the club. And to see the performance he put in made me go, actually, do you know what? Yeah, this team does have squad depth. This team does have quality. It it can go up against the likes of Manchester City, especially a city that's got no rogerie for the whole season.
00:14:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, possibly that's a big factor because i think I think City are very much still adjusting to a roger-less team.
00:14:05
Marcus Ramtohul
um
00:14:08
Marcus Ramtohul
Yeah.
00:14:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you know they they barely got through against Wolves, like you mentioned, that 95th minute winner. And he's such a key player play for them.
00:14:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
The stats of their win percentage when he's in the team versus when he's out, is too stark to just be a coincidence and it shows that you know they've not really found a way to win without him so i think you guys are very much in it i feel like i feel like we say this every year probably but the title race looks really really appealing because city obviously have the experience they've got the know-how Liverpool have the form and the players playing at their best you know Salah's back at it Van Dijk, Trent, everyone is at it and Arsenal you know we can't write them off yet there are only four points behind Liverpool if they are to beat you guys on the weekend then they're only one point behind so I feel like let's see how the title race goes until Christmas because I think it could still be neck neck and neck so
00:15:20
Marcus Ramtohul
Yeah, I think it will go to the wire. I really do and I hope it will. um One more thought then about, you know, I think Liverpool will finish top four.

Chelsea's Top-Four Aspirations

00:15:30
Marcus Ramtohul
Chelsea, what are you thinking is going to be the end of the season for them? what is the What is the end of the season they deserve? What is the end that you hope?
00:15:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, i so I think the top four race is also going to be very close because I think Aston Villa, youdda you'd have to say have been the fourth best team in the country.
00:15:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I mean, the way that they've juggled the Champions League and the Premier League, you know, they're top of the Champions League table right now with three wins from three. They're the only team in the competition to have won their first three games and their fourth in the Premier League on the same amount of points as Arsenal. So My thoughts are that because of how well they've started the Champions League, they will progress into the knockout stages. And then I think Emery will prioritize the Champions League, which I would probably do as well, because there's no guarantee that you're ever going to. Well, there's no guarantee you're going to get back to that stage for another 10, 15 years. So I think they'll prioritize that. And then maybe they'll be left a little bit short in the Premier League. Maybe I'm also hoping for that a bit.
00:16:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
because I think they're better than us right now. I think that's definitely true. I think though, I think we're better than Brighton. I think where we've also got better squad than Tottenham and obviously Manchester United, you just have no idea what's happening with them.
00:16:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'd like to think that we could finish top four. If we could finish top four and win the conference league, which we absolutely should do, like if we don't win the conference league there's no excuse for that. So if we could finish the season with ah a European trophy and a top four finish and the style of football that we're still seeing and you know The new sign is flourishing. People finally starting to respect Chelsea's project instead of laughing at it. I think that would be a very realistic season. And I also think, well, I meant to say that would be a brilliant season. And I also think it's quite realistic because I don't think any Chelsea fan expects us to do anything miraculous, you know, a top four finish and a trophy that we should win. I think we'd all take that.
00:17:39
Marcus Ramtohul
Well, I do have a lot of love for what's happening at Villa, but I would love to see Cole Palmer and Chelsea in the Champions League.
00:17:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
well
00:17:45
Marcus Ramtohul
I think that'd be really special. So as long as you don't give us too much to worry about in this title race, then I'll be happy to let you enjoy that. um But I think it's advert time.

England's New Manager: Thomas Tuchel Question?

00:18:30
Marcus Ramtohul
But we have to touch upon the New England Management Appointment. It's not the Chelsea Podcast. It seems to have a bit of a theme of Chelsea at the moment. Thomas Tuchel. Before we were recording, we seemed to be in agreement about this appointment. And I wanted to talk about it because it actually The press and social media I've seen about the appointment ah has been really disappointing to me. This outdated narrative that the English manager has to be English and God forbid we have a German manage the English national team in 2024.
00:19:09
Marcus Ramtohul
um it blows my mind maybe it's just the internet making things blown out of proportion because I think anybody who who likes football and wants England to do well would see this as a really good appointment. ah What's what your thoughts on the appointment from a from a tactical managerial point of view but also what we've been reading about England fans not happy with their new German manager
00:19:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah i mean it is a bit strange and disappointing i feel like you know there's a lot of stuff underneath the surface that people can't say that maybe is playing into it i saw one newspaper article that had like you know england appointed german and the german was fully in capitals like it was some sort of slur or something so you're right it is you know a slightly outdated view i i can also Understand some of the arguments I've heard for example Jamie Carragher saying that it should be our best against your best So we have to power the best that we have you put out the best you have I understand that but the fact is that that isn't the rule and people don't have to do that so when you've got you know Saudi Arabia and the World Cup appointing
00:20:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
and a manager who's won the Afghan a couple of times and they beat Argentina, you know they could have, well, by this logic, they should have appointed a Saudi Arabian manager and lost every game. They didn't do that. Any team in the world, national team, can appoint whoever they want. So I don't see why we should be setting ourselves these rules that aren't in place. That's the way I see

Tuchel's Winning Record

00:20:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
it. you know If you're able to do it, you should do it. And and I'd look at it at a base level of,
00:20:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
The options for England were, realistically, Lee Carsley, Eddie Howe, or Graham Potter. Now, you know, I think they're all good managers, but if you compare any one of those three with Thomas Sookle, it's a mismatch. I think Thomas Sookle is the best knockout manager in the world. He's played 43 knockout matches in his career, and he's won 34 of them. He's only lost nine.
00:21:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, I can speak to this as a Chelsea fan. In that season, 2021, when we won the Champions League, we were absolutely brilliant coming up against teams who are better than us. You know, Real Madrid, Athletica Madrid, ah Manchester City in the final. Tuchel always had a plan for how to beat them. We conceded four goals in that Champions League campaign and obviously lifted it. You know, he was the he's the first and only manager to get PSG to a Champions League final.

Tuchel's Fit with English Football Culture

00:21:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously they didn't get over the line, but he did that with them. you know With Bayern Munich last season, even though things were a bit ropey, he still managed to beat Arsenal in the Champions League over two legs. and you know he In that season as well that we won the Champions League, he beat Pep three times.
00:22:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he's the only manager to have ever beaten Pep three times in the season. So all of these things just tell me that he's a brilliant knockout manager and also a big point is he understands English football and he understands the fans. When he was at Chelsea,
00:22:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
He managed to connect with the fans on a level that I've not seen since maybe Conte or Mourinho, you know, that passion to win, showing his feelings on the touchline.
00:22:37
Marcus Ramtohul
Mm.
00:22:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just, he came out and press conferences saying how much he loved living in London. Since he's been appointed the English manager, he's come out saying how much he loves English football culture. He's happy to be living back in London.
00:22:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I feel like when the March qualifiers start for England, And fans can see him on the touchline, pumping his chest and, you know, doing whatever else they'll get involved because Gary Southgate, as brilliant as he was, he was very cool, calm, composed, very, you know, press trained.
00:23:08
Marcus Ramtohul
Yeah.
00:23:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
He knew exactly what to say to the media. Thomas Tuchel wears his heart on his sleeve a bit more. And I think fans love that. And if we start getting results and he's passionate, I think a lot of people will quickly change their mind.
00:23:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think?
00:23:25
Marcus Ramtohul
So it's interesting hearing you talking about his passion. I mean, ah i'm I didn't follow him as much because he didn't manage, you know, he's the other German really. And yeah, it's interesting to hear that kind of contrast. You know, his record, of course, is is unbelievable. What i'm I'm curious about is how he goes about getting these results. Is it that He has a game plan for every game, is that what you're saying? Or is it that he's just that his teams are that well drilled and he knows exactly what they're going to do and they're not going to deviate from it? What is what is the secret sauce that he's got there?
00:23:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he changes his game plan game by game and also team by team who he's managing. When he had PSG and Bayern Munich at times he was playing four at the back. Whereas when he was at Chelsea, it was ah very much three at the back for most of it. So he changes his system based on the players he has available and also on the opposition that he's coming up against.
00:24:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Which, when you think about national management at the highest level, you've got seven important games every two years, the Euros and the World Cup. So if he can get his team selection formation, highlighting the opposition's weakness right for seven games, and he can do that because that's exactly what he did for Chelsea and for

England's Hopes Under Tuchel

00:24:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
PSG, he'll he'll win us a trophy. I'm fairly confident with the squad that we've got and the quality of manager that he is, I think this is finally the end of, you know, a 50 year long wait.
00:25:01
Marcus Ramtohul
It has been an incredibly long wait and actually one of the the pieces of press which absolutely astounded me was it was almost it was written like a complaint across the the the headline was something like oh if if too cool it delivers the world cup you'll get a three million pound bonus It sounds like a bargain.
00:25:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:25:20
