Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome back to the Daily English Premier League Podcast brought to you by GSPN. My name is Tom Joy and today I'm joined by the man that knows all things Liverpool Football Club. It is Marcus.
00:00:19
Marcus Ramtohul
Hello, hello!
00:00:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Marcus, let's dive straight into it, because in a week where Reuben Amrim says it's the best and worst week of his life, Nottingham Forest sit third in the Premier League table, and Edu Gaspar has left Arsenal Football Club as their director of football.

Nottingham Forest's Premier League Performance

00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there are the three things we're going to be diving into today, and we'll start off with Nottingham Forest.
00:00:39
Marcus Ramtohul
Yes and it pains me to start with Forest because you know they're quite an upset at Anfield earlier in the season. i was I was at the game actually just after that so I'm glad I wasn't at the Forest game. um But yes they they won 1-0 at Liverpool and they have been well frankly incredible so far this season. They're currently third in the Premier League above Chelsea, above Arsenal. A team that not so long ago didn't even have a shirt sponsor and I'm sure we were talking about how they would survive this season. and Something is going on that's really incredible there. I'm just having a look who a forest got next.
00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle.
00:01:19
Marcus Ramtohul
The Newcastle two o'clock kickoff on Sunday, they're at home to Newcastle. And it gave us great joy, me and Louis talking the other day about ah Chris Wood, banging him in again. Classic striker. ah Seems like a real top bloke. So I'm very happy for for him and for everything that's happening at Forest. ah Tom, why? Why is it happening? What's going on?
00:01:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's absolutely superb. I think, you know, so Santos really got the defensive stability of that Nottingham Forest side really well. Obviously they tend to play with like a 4-2-3-1, but it's very, it's very interchangeable when they've got the ball with the win they haven't. And it's really refreshing to see a side like Nottingham Forest doing well because of the pedigree they have as a football club in general, and obviously the vast history they've had since the the late eighties, nineties, two thousands, even obviously say the European Cup winners at one point in the history as well.
00:02:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Something I wanted to to bring up is that obviously Leicester were in the same position as them at this time in 2015, going into win the Premier League in 2016. So if you compare Nottingham Forest and Leicester's Premier League results and performances so far this season, compared to Leicester when they won the league, both have five wins, both have four draws, both have one defeat. Nottingham Forest have scored 14, Leicester scored 20.
00:02:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
But this is the big one.

Future Prospects for Nottingham Forest

00:02:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Forrest have only conceded seven goals this season.
00:02:40
Marcus Ramtohul
wow oh i mean what a story that would be um do you know what as lovely as it is i i have to kind of be the voice that says do you know what
00:02:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
That season, Leicester conceded 17 in their first 10 games. They couldn't, could they?
00:02:59
Marcus Ramtohul
Newcastle next, Arsenal after that, um Man City and Man United still to come, Villa still to come, Spurs side, Boxing Day, they've they've got Spurs um at home and Spurs have been looking so good this this season as well. I'm not saying it's just because they've played lesser teams, I think they've actually played some really lovely football but Going back to this point, I feel like people are going to think I'm a closet City fan because I'm going to go back to this point of this resilience that City have where I feel like they're just unbeatable.
00:03:33
Marcus Ramtohul
I know they lost a little weekend, but and yeah, this I think there's just a little bit too much competition and I think they're doing excellent. I wish them well.
00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
i I'm going to counteract that between thinking that I think every team at the top, and I said it on yesterday's episode, every team at the top of the Premier League is beatable now.
00:03:43
Marcus Ramtohul
I can't see top four.
00:03:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
You can rock up at the Etihad and think you can get a result. You can rock up at Elmfield and get a result. You can go with that to Arsenal, Arsenal, of course, and you can get a result. That's what makes the Premier League amazing.
00:04:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
But on last game first, obviously, don't get wrong, they're sat third in the table right now. We're only 10 games in. We've got another 28 game weeks to go. going to be a very, very tough season. They've got quite the thin squad, but obviously they don't have the caveat of having European football like all the other teams do.
00:04:17
Marcus Ramtohul
Yep.
00:04:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
The big thing for me is, is it good for them to be finishing maybe in that top half of the Premier League table, or does a club run need to happen for a club like Nottingham Forest to get like a trophy under their belt?
00:04:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because is this the start of maybe where we see Nottingham Forest? Enter that top eight, nine, 10 positions in the Premier League or is this just a little bit of purple patch and they'll certainly tail off in the next few weeks.
00:04:44
Marcus Ramtohul
Well, you know, you mentioned the history of the club and, um you know, I'm showing my age a bit to say that I remember ah just about kind of like the European glory days and and what that club was before we talked about all the forest even stay up. So um I really want to see that happen. And we spoke when um the Carabao Cup kicked off this season about whether or not it's worth anyone's time compared to you know what you actually win. um Yes, it's silverware, and it's not to be sniffed at, but actually, if you want to build a club, you need money. And Forrest are probably better off aiming to finish finish in the top half of the table, and then maybe even challenge to get into Europe and you know everything that comes after that. And it's a real shame for those cup competitions. But I said it the other day, you know
00:05:35
Marcus Ramtohul
Actually, if you're a Villa fan, are you that bothered that you're no longer playing Carabao Cup football? So I think Forest fans will be very pleased with where they are, and I know I can't speak for them, but I would say you'd much rather finish in the top half of the table than win, say, the Carabao Cup.
00:05:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, for me, I think you look at Forrest as that perspective, from go year but I mean, well, you look you look at the amount of cup runs they've had, obviously, they're no longer in the Carabao Cup as far as I'm aware. So you look at the the FA Cup, obviously, only just reached the first round this weekend, some brilliant stories alongside that as well.

Edu Gaspar's Move to Nottingham Forest

00:06:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Forrest could be one of those teams who have a couple of good fixtures in that competition and go on there a little bit of a run. Do you see them winning it overall? Probably not, especially with the quality in and around the FA Cup and the stories and the magic that it holds.
00:06:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
But when you look at the league position they're in now, I really think they have the quality in that first 11 in particular, and they maybe won two or three off the bench, to finish in and around 8th, 9th or 10th. Whether they push to that seventh spot is still unknown to me because I'm not quite convinced that they've played a team that, i don't go wrong, they obviously beat Liverpool and it was a brilliant performance, but They've not played a team that's properly put them under, put them under pressure.
00:06:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've kind of been playing teams throughout the first 10 games. I mean, Bournemouth on the first day of the season, you look at Liverpool, you look at some of the other fixtures. I mean, West Ham absolutely folded when they played them at the weekend, when they lost 3-0 to them.
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
So can they keep up the form? I hope they can, but the main thing for them is can Chris Wood keep scoring and can they concede as little goals as they have so far this season and keep a clean sheet?
00:07:09
Marcus Ramtohul
Hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:07:16
Marcus Ramtohul
one One quick one there just for you, ah Tom. He talked about it, Louis and I, the other day. Nuno Espirito Santo, was he hard done by its spurs?
00:07:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think he was. I think it was a case i mean, he was booing so far in the season, wasn't he? Daniel Levy never even gave him a chance to try and get that style of play together that he needed to, trying to get the identity of the squad. And I think if he'd have had the chance, I don't think Spurs would be in any different... They would they wouldn't have been nowhere near as better as they are now under Andrew Proctor Coghler, you don't get me wrong. but um He probably deserved a bit longer, but in in hindsight, it was probably the best decision for him that he moved on. He went to Saudi, didn't he? And then comes back into the Premier League for Forest and no one expected that. And he's done kept them in the Premier League and done brilliant things since.
00:08:02
Marcus Ramtohul
Yeah, can't complain, can't complain. um Certainly if you're a Forest fan, I can complain because of the result we had at Anfield, but that's that's less to be talked about. Anyway, I think it's time we told the guys about Zencaster.

heading from the city ground to the Emirates now. And the big breaking news for the Gunners is that former player and invincible, Edu Gaspar, has left Arsenal as sporting director. And the big news around that is that he's going to join the group that own Nottingham Forest. he's goingnna He's going to go and join Evangelos Marinakis. I want to say I'm really pronouncing that correct, but probably not. ah He obviously owns Olympiacas, he owns Nottingham Forest, and owns quite a few other different clubs around there.
00:09:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
and it looks like Edu Gaspar is set to join them in a technical role, not just for one of the clubs but as an overall accolade of the the whole group set up under Marinakis. You look at what Arsenal spent during his time at the Emirates, they are the third highest spenders since he joined in 2019 spending 869 million just behind the 1.1 billion of Manchester United and the 1.6 billion of Chelsea. They've sold players and accumulated up to £300 million pounds in cash. Their net spend is £569.5 million. Some of the notable signs that Eddie Gaspar made while he was sporting director at Arsenal include Declan Rice in July of 2023 for Kai Havert for £65 million in June 2023,
00:09:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Martin Odegard after they signed him on the back of his successful loan spell with them in August of 2021 alongside some of those names are including Ben White, Thomas Partey, Jesus California and so on. Some of the big names that did not work out at Arsenal in that list include, I mean you could probably put Fabio Vieira in there, he's really not performed since he signed from Porto in 2022.
00:10:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the big one, Nicolas Pepe, 72 million, was slapped on Lil's head for him ah in August 2019 and he really didn't perform for the Gunners. How is this going to affect the set-up at Arsenal? Because we saw Andrew Gaspar in the the Arsenal documentary in the All or Nothing series. Him and Michael Arteta seem to have a good relationship. He's obviously helped Arsenal get to where they are now in the league with the recruitment side of things. How is this going to affect them?
00:10:39
Marcus Ramtohul
Yeah, i I must admit, so I only found this out um well as soon as you basically kind of ah introduced us to to today's podcast and yeah we were talking about what we were going to discuss and I'm absolutely shocked because I don't see why he's left as in, you know, and I think he said um but he's looking forward to a new challenge. Okay, that makes sense. But is there an underlying thing of like, you know, is it a money thing? Is there something not quite working out of Arsenal? Because it feels like things are really clicking for Arsenal at the moment. And how is this going to affect them? Well, we've been talking a lot about um the new appointment at Manchester United.
00:11:24
Marcus Ramtohul
Amarin coming in and I don't think the media's made too much about, hang on a minute, the manager hasn't necessarily always been the problem at Man United since the Fergie era. I think there's a lot to be said for what on earth is happening in the back room. And you're talking about what we on match day 11 now? Yeah, match day 11.
00:11:45
Marcus Ramtohul
and all of a sudden a legend of the club, an invincible, and someone who's done some of the best business of the club for so many years, and also on a tactics Tuesday, let's not underestimate just how important sporting director roles are. I think this is huge. And you know if I'm an Arsenal fan, I'm thinking, hang on a minute, if we can't keep our key staff, what's going on?
00:12:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's really strange to me, but because he spent five years at the Emirates. He seemed to have a brilliant relationship with Michael Arteta, the board. Obviously, he's part of the the big set up that goes through a lot of different stages in the kronky set up at Arsenal. And it's been fairly successful, obviously, his first two or three years, finishing eighth in the league. But since then, two title challenges this year. Is that going to happen again? You probably say it will, after the back of um Well, I mean, spoke about this from Mike yesterday about how Arsenal's fixtures move tougher compared to City and Liverpool. So on that note, I think for Gaspar to leave, it stems that there's, they must, to me, that seems there must have been an issue that Arsenal wasn't happy with.
00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah And then to move into the role with Nottingham Forest, when they've just jumped him in the table, it seems to be pretty good timing for him to have moved to Nottingham Forest. Do you think if they'd have been low on the table, maybe he hadn't have moved towards? So he's not going to be just at Nottingham Forest, he'd be around the Olympiarch or something like that. But do you think if Forest weren't high in the table, maybe he wouldn't have moved?

Reuben Amrim and Manchester United

00:13:12
Marcus Ramtohul
No, what I will say, I mean, I've just after saying, you know, is he really looking for the challenge? Or is there something else going on there? I think these these kind of franchise type setups of clubs, um they've got a whole episode about that, but potentially is the challenge he wouldn't get at Arsenal. And there's potentially not just the forest, but everything else that's going on to really kind of stretch what he's doing and and really make a name for himself beyond what he's already done. So um I don't think the forest situation is necessarily oh that you know they're doing well so I may as well go. I think there is a bigger ambition there um and I reckon as well a large paycheck behind it as well.
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course, there would be. I mean, you've spoken about a lot on this podcast over the last few months about certain roles that certain people have taken up and the money involved. Jurgen Klopp in the Red Bull group is a big one. You then look at Gaspar to the forest set up in a rather than PR course and several other clubs across Europe. You'd expect a big paycheck to be involved. But something that you don't have to pay for is the services and content that we offer here at the Global Sports Podcast Network. This podcast is of course brought to you by GSPN, the world's first daily podcast network on the world's biggest sporting export, the Premier League. fantasy football and women's football and you can catch us with the old cliche of wherever you get your podcasts the global sports podcast network every club every day and someone who's got a big day coming up soon later this month is Reuben Amorim the current sporting manager has been announced by Manchester United to replace and succeed from Eric Tenharg in the dugout at Old Trafford it's given a very sought after one but what I want to start off with this
00:14:47
Marcus Ramtohul
Hm.
00:14:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
is Sky Sports journalists on Ruben Amrim's back already. He had a press conference ahead of his clash with Manchester City in the Champions League this week and one of the Sky Sports journalists asked Ruben Amrim to give an answer to him in English. He's a Portuguese manager managing a Portuguese team in Portugal And one of the Sky Sports journalists tried to get him to answer a question in English. Rube Ramin basically just went, no, I will speak English when I get to England. For now, I will speak Portuguese. And you he tried to, press the journalist tried to press him and press him. And but that's that's not very good journalism, is it, Marcus?
00:15:33
Marcus Ramtohul
No, no, I'm 100% vammer in there. I think it's it's very poor. um and And also it doesn't really play well on us. You know, there's enough of ah enough of Europe kind of looking at um how uncivilised the English can be at times. And yeah, that's really, I tell you what, first of all, it is really poor for us, especially as he's coming to England. But actually, if you're a United fan watching the way he's dealt with that,
00:16:01
Marcus Ramtohul
are you starting to go do you know what yeah all right this guy's got something about him
00:16:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's got positives, but the thing that worries me the the the little bit is the fact of how similar it is to the appointment of Eric Tenhaag. He did so well at Ajax, they had similar records for sporting compared to what Tenhaag had at Ajax. They were both quite heavy on the media before they came in when they first came in, and we know obviously how Tenhaag turned out, and and obviously we were big advocates for him to stay and whatnot. but You look at Amrym, don't get me wrong, it's really promising. I just don't want it to turn into the same. I don't think it will because Amrym is not coming into such a toxic atmosphere like Ten Heart was. But as this is tactic Tuesday, I want to dive into a little bit more of the tactics that Ruben Amrym has and hopefully will implement in his first week at Old Trafford. His first game is going to be against Ipswich.
00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
in a couple weeks after the international break. so Ruben Amrim plays a 3-4-3 at sport and he plays a basically he has in possession he has his goalkeeper and his two centre backs basically create a back three he has the centre sense back going to midfield here then has two of the midfielders one is basically a destroyer your Emmanuel Iguate your Casamiro The other one is your box-to-box winner. You're looking at maybe a colby maneau, someone to pick the ball up off the bat for and maybe progress yourselves forward a bit more. Your two wing backs, I guess you could say, or your wide midfielders are doing probably the most important two players in the team. They are providing the attacking input high up the pitch, but when you're defending in a low block of a five, you have to be good at both. So it'll be interesting to see if he keeps with the likes of Diogo Delo. We know the left-back issue has been
00:17:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
an issue from Manchester United over the last 12-18 months. Mazzrari was brilliant against Chelsea, but can he facilitate his trade in that left wing back row? I'm not too sure. You then look at the front three. He plays what is essentially a number nine and two number but basically two at half-turn number 10s. It's quite similar. It is somewhat similar to what Tuco did play at Chelsea when he won the Champions League, having the two 10s of Haberts and Mount and then Werner up top in that makeshift front three with a three-back formation.
00:18:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Abrams is a bit different because there's so much flexibility in that squad. And it's not like it's not going to be like he was at 10 heart with 10 hardware. He has his favorites and plays the same formation. It's going to be a fort it's going to be a team each week that is put together.
00:18:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
on the basis of who they're playing. it's it's his His sporting teams have been built on individuals being tactically flexible in the certain system he wants to play against certain oppositions. And that's why he's been so successful in Portugal. Is that going to translate over to the Premier League? Only time will tell. ah But it's interesting to look at the squad that Manchester United have at their disposal right now in a back four and how that's going to translate into a back three.
00:18:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, if you were to run through Manchester United's squad for a back three, probably sit with Nana's going to be in between the six, all fully fit, your back three will probably be Lissandria Martis on the left, that left-sided centre half, being able to, the only worry you have for him is, is he going to be able to defend the wide areas? That's been an issue he's had over the last few weeks, but technically on the ball, he's a really good ball progressor. You have that mid middle centre back. Could this be the renaissance of Harry Maguire? Did so well in a back three for England, didn't he? Did it at some points during Leicester, has done it for Manchester United, could he be? the man to step into that central centre-back role, I'm not too sure, probably going to go with the tyres to look there, played at a back three at Juventus, was quite good alongside Kielin in Benucci, then you look at the right centre-back, Lenny Euro is the obvious option, can play as a right-back with the pace that he has, can play as a ball progresses centre-back and is really good at just being an out-and-out defender. Your wide midfielders are the two that are really struggling for me, you're looking on the right-hand side, probably going to be Diogo Delo, he's got
00:19:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think playing in a back three, it really helps him and the defensive frailties he had in his game, especially at the back post. As you look at the way Diogo Delo plays for Manchester United, he's trying to go up the pitch so much, whereas defending at his back post isn't that good. On the left-hand side, who you're looking at, that's the big question for Manchester United fans. Who's going to start on that left-hand side of midfield? Is it going to be an Anthony? Is it going to be a Garnaccio? Who's it going to be? Is he going to bring something else? to Maybe he'll bring back Alvaro Fernandes. who you United sold from Benfica, there is a buyback clause there. Eumidfield too. Manuel Agate is going to be in there. Is it going to be Colby Manu alongside him? Maybe he'll bring Bruno Fernandes into the midfield, although with the system that's sporting play, probably going to expect the Portuguesemen to be as part of that front three.
00:20:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
The other midfielding option you also have in there is a Christian Ericsson. Depending on the opposition, as I just mentioned, the frailties in certain players' games and the way Amory wants his players to change and facilitate the tactics around the certain opposition, if you're playing at home against the lower side, maybe you put a Christian Ericsson in there. Maybe he can sort of facilitate and set the tempo of the game. If you're playing against a certain more defensive block, maybe you double up on a Agate and Casemiro. That would be quite interesting. The front three, for me, I'd say it speaks for itself. You've probably you've obviously got to have Bruno Fernandes probably in that front three on the right-hand side. That ball into the back post is his absolutely wonder trait, in my opinion, and it'll be really interesting to see how how good he's going to be under Amrim. Left-hand side, that's the tricky one. Is he going to go with a double-up of Hoyland and Xerxe and play Xerxe as more of a deeper link-up player? Maybe he could then spread the ball out wide, get it into the box like a sort of a Goncarves has done at times.
00:21:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
for, or González, should I say, as the right pronunciation, um while he was at sporting. Is he going to play Marcus Rashford as that inside forward on the left, which we know he would be absolutely perfect for? And again, González has done the same thing. Then you look at the number nine. For me, the obvious position is Rasmus Hoyland. He can run into the channels just like Jocherez does. I mean, he's been brilliant since signing for sporting for commentary. So, Marcus, as much as that was a very long-winded answer to my own question, is that the perfect way for Manchester United to set up under Ruben Amry?
00:21:50
Marcus Ramtohul
I think some really, really interesting points there. i think and Danny Murphy made a really good point at the weekend and match of the day about actually Fernandez of of all the players. We know he he's not been perfect all season, but he has to play. And I think you're absolutely right, that kind of right-sided 10 position. I've got no doubt that the left side should be Marcus Rashford. And I think he's such a confidence player that a new manager coming in, you'll see a lot out of him. And I could i could see Hoyland really enjoying that that role at the top of the three.
00:22:22
Marcus Ramtohul
um The resurgence of Harry Maguire is an interesting one. I think potentially that would be, it would really work out for Manchester United. The issue that I think that people aren't talking about, you know, we're hearing a lot about, he likes a 3-4-3, but you're talking about a sporting team that is positive and pressing and they work off the ball and they're attacking and he's inheriting a lacklustre Manchester United squad and I think probably not his first choice of players he would have in an 11. So we're all assuming he's going to go to a 3-4-3.
00:23:02
Marcus Ramtohul
But I'm wondering, you know, does he have the players to play the way he wants to play? Of course, we expect a new manager is going to bring that burst of of energy from players where they will work and they will press. um And for me, whether it's a 3-4-3 or whether it's not, what he's really got to do is get under the skin of these players and get them playing again. You know, Roy Keane can say it till the cows come home the watching a team that isn't playing like they're Manchester United players, that isn't carrying the burden of the history of the club onto every game. It's very lackluster at times and almost feels like they're they're picking and choosing where they're going. so For a kind of experimentation with the form that it's which you're in, first game away from home, not bad to see what he comes up with, and actually
00:23:53
Marcus Ramtohul
really interesting run of games after that. Everton at home, Arsenal away, Forest we've talked about at the top of the programme. At home, the Manchester Derby actually I quite fancy Manchester United in this Manchester Derby.
00:24:08
Marcus Ramtohul
I think a few games under his belt, a team that wants to prove itself, a team that will be willing to do some work, ah that would be really interesting for Manchester United and the rest of the Premier League.
00:24:19
Marcus Ramtohul
But um for me, the formation is one thing. it's It's getting these players to start playing Manchester United way.
00:24:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
is the implementation of it. is That's what you're getting at. And I think you look at the timing of when he comes in, obviously, yes, when we spoke about last week didn't know about the the news when I brought it up as saying He's going to have to serve that notice. That's now been announced. He can't come in until the 11th of November, which is the start of an international break, isn't it? Which means he's not going to have half of his squad for what is it, a ah week or two of the international break. So you then look at when he comes back in, how many games are going to take to implement the style of play that he wants. It's going to take time. The other big thing I saw about Manchester United's appointment was this is Manchester United's youngest ever manager.

And we announced him as Manchester United's first ever head coach instead of manager, which to me shows Ineos' statement on we had the tactics have been all wrong. the the The implementation of the club from the top down has been all wrong over the last decade, so this shows in intent.

And the final thing is, I think Ruben Amorim always he has his hand on what the Manchester United fans are going to think. He plays sporting in the Champions League this week and he was quoted in his post in pretty much press conference basically saying, well, if I lose in sporting loser's game, the hype dies down ah a hell of a lot, doesn't it?

if I win this game I'm probably going to be named as the next Sir Alex Ferguson. Those were his words and I think he's got the Manchester United fanbase summed up perfectly and I think that's probably the best time to end this on that note. So will Ruben Amrim be able to implement a 3-4-3 formation at Manchester United straight away? How much is Edou Gaspar going to affect Arsenal in the oncoming season as he's left the club and will Nottingham Forest continue their fine form in the Premier League? Only time will tell. It's goodbye from me
