Introduction to the Podcast

00:00:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and a big warm welcome to you. We are the Daily English Premier League podcast brought to you by GSPN. My name is Mikey and today I'm joined by the one and only Louis.
00:00:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
How are you, sir?
00:00:28
Louie Easton
I am very well, thank you how are you
00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, very good.

Manchester United's Current Challenges

00:00:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cheers, pal. And um we are coming out on a Thursday and we're going to be talking to you about all the things that are catching our eye coming out of the Premier League. um The big stories that are taking place and we would like to propose um our first prediction, or I would, should I say, I shouldn't throw you under the bus with me, Louis.
00:00:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll tell you that it's my my opinion and Louis is there to challenge it if he must. But last night we saw Man City defeated ah quite heavily in the Champions League two nights ago, it will be actually to this podcast.
00:01:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And it's the red side of Manchester that my prediction is the new manager has a target of getting Man United into the top half of the league as a good finish this year.
00:01:09
Louie Easton
you.
00:01:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Louis,
00:01:23
Louie Easton
I mean, this is absolute heaven to me. This is music to my ears to hear Manchester United fighting for the top half of the Premier League. And I'll tell you an interesting fact that was ah linked into the group chats today.
00:01:39
Louie Easton
Manchester United have only spent 11% of the Premier League this season in a winning position. That's how bad it has gotten for Manchester United. um They've been fine defensively.
00:01:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
over to
00:01:51
Louie Easton
It's just the attack that something's still going

Management and Performance Issues at Manchester United

00:01:55
Louie Easton
wrong. And to be honest with you, I honestly don't think Ruben Amarim will have that much of an effect on the players. He's a young manager.
00:02:03
Louie Easton
And to me, he's more of a tactician than a motivator from what I've seen so far. So I don't think that he is...
00:02:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
you.
00:02:09
Louie Easton
um I mean, we saw how good he is as a tactician with a good team like sporting in the Champions League, defeating Manchester City who are suddenly out of form at the moment. Three losses in all competitions in a row.
00:02:22
Louie Easton
ah But we've seen it over the years of Manchester United since Fergie left. ah They employ a good manager. They think he's going to be good.
00:02:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:02:30
Louie Easton
And then suddenly it's the same conclusion. The players just do not perform well under Manchester United. Whatever the cause that may be, maybe it's an old outdated training ground at Carrington that Cristiano Ronaldo mentioned when he returned there a few years ago or maybe every manager has just been getting the tactics wrong with the players in their squad or maybe the players just don't care enough maybe it's a mixture of all of the three but I'll tell you something I do not think Amarim will change Manchester United.
00:02:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:03:01
Louie Easton
That's my opinion.

Impact of Facilities and Attitude on Manchester United

00:03:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow. So, United have got... Well, the draw leaves them on 12 points from the first 10 games, which is the worst league start to a season since 1986-87 season, and which they only accumulated eight points at. Similarly, they've only just... They scored just nine goals in their fewest at this stage of the campaign since 1974. So the score and the tally of points is is of of the lowest of all time for United um and in in over a couple of decades. You don't think that the new manager will change.
00:03:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
what what is it then at all straford that has to change
00:03:46
Louie Easton
I think it's just everything from the attitude to the facilities. I mean, if things from what Cristiano Ronaldo said in his ah very famous interview with Piers Morgan, the things just haven't changed at Manchester United since he was there.
00:04:03
Louie Easton
They haven't moved on from the times of Fergie ah when having those sort of outdated facilities, the outdated stadium ah they're playing at.
00:04:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
What is it then at Old Trafford that has to change?
00:04:12
Louie Easton
They haven't moved on. Well, the team won't move on with the times as well. They can bring in all these tactical geniuses, but they need a real motivator. And I do think that there is an attitude problem within the squad.
00:04:25
Louie Easton
I mean, we saw it with Jadon Sancho and he was there. He was meant to be the big signing. He cost a massive, massive ah price tag when he joined as well.
00:04:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:04:33
Louie Easton
And then he just fell out with Ten Hag and he had an attitude problem just, you know, slandering the team in the group chat from what I remember as well. um And also when you look to players like Marcus Rashford, who just don't want to run and who have been at the club for all of these years and don't press, yeah it's the same issues that we've been seeing constantly.
00:04:57
Louie Easton
You know, Harry Maguire losing confidence as well. And he was the captain at the time when they were struggling in lockdown and having his captain's armband stripped and given to Bruno Fernandes, someone who I don't think is the motivator that they need.
00:05:12
Louie Easton
I think these are all the fundamental things at Manchester United that just haven't changed and they constantly do the same, blaming the manager. You know, Ralf Rangnick has been doing fine with Austria since he left Manchester United.
00:05:25
Louie Easton
Granted, international football is very different to club football, but he had a great run in the Euros.
00:05:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:05:30
Louie Easton
um And Ten Hag, I don't think necessarily was the problem. You know, the FA Cup win and the League Cup win that he got in his three years at Manchester United, I think that's the team that Manchester United are going for the cup competitions because they can't compete with Arsenal.
00:05:47
Louie Easton
They can't compete with Man City. They can't compete with Liverpool.
00:05:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
uh
00:05:51
Louie Easton
That's what they should be doing, going for the cup competitions. Roy Keane said it himself. I just don't think Manchester United have been treating their managers ah fairly and they need to be rougher on these players.
00:06:04
Louie Easton
that They're paying way too much money every week ah for the talents that they are and the way that they're performing on the pitch.
00:06:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:06:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, um I think you're right. I think they're also putting a lot of weight onto ah young players that are very good and show ah potential, such as Alejandro Garnaccio.
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I don't think he should be your... i don't think I think he should be someone that's being eased into the team as opposed to your starting XI. And I think that's one of the biggest issues.
00:06:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've mentioned it. The price of their squad is astronomical, really. And to consider that they are, you know, they're now out of the relegation battle and in a strong 13th position in the league.
00:06:48
Louie Easton
Thank
00:06:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
How wonderful ah is that? And I can't disagree with you that the new manager is not going to come in and change it. They've got City and Arsenal on the horizon. um I think, as I said at the very beginning, it will be a tale of getting into the top half of the table, avoiding at all costs, and this is coming from a Man United fan, that we don't get into Europe.
00:07:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there's a chance to then address the squad, ah what's going on within the club, and concentrate solely on league and cup football, domestic cup football um for now.
00:07:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think his selection process of who he's going to put in the team, who he's going to choose and whether he's going to change things drastically. As you've seen at Liverpool, they didn't choose to do that and with the transition of manager.
00:07:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
They kept things fairly similar to how they've've been running and that has proved very successful as as as we might talk about towards the end of this podcast but here at the Global Sports Podcast Network we talk about selecting and the perfect delivery on platform and we chose Zencastr which came out as a clear winner.
00:07:49
Louie Easton

00:08:28
Louie Easton
that was an incredible for transition into that unbelievable
00:08:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we have mentioned United and I want to move away from that because it does depress me quite a lot. um And I'm going to talk about Villa who played last night um against Club Brugge, I think it was.
00:08:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And they lost 1-0.
00:08:49
Louie Easton
That was an incredible transition into that. Unbelievable.
00:08:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's showing after their defeat to Spurs at the weekend, their demise to Spurs. It looked like they started really strong in that game. And then the second half, just Spurs turned it on.
00:09:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Villa really didn't match up to what Spurs had to offer. I think that the juggling act is is starting to to
00:09:09
Louie Easton
Thank you.

Aston Villa's Recent Performance Analysis

00:09:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
to show and their depth and quality of squad maybe isn't up to scratch to be making a top four finish again this year.
00:09:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think louis
00:09:21
Louie Easton
I completely agree.
00:09:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
ten
00:09:23
Louie Easton
And I predicted that before the season because Villa were terrific. I actually predicted Villa to start ah to finish top four last season, believe it or not. I was one of the very few and I got completely harassed in the group chat after I made that prediction.
00:09:38
Louie Easton
And I was right. So I was incredibly, incredibly smug. But I didn't think that they would do it again just because this is their first season with Champions League football since a hit since it was changed to Champions League football in the 1990s.
00:09:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
think, Louis?
00:09:53
Louie Easton
Now, I thought, um you know, this is a huge challenge, especially with this new format where you have to play in this league, which is eight matches matches traveling into Europe four times and then getting back for the weekend to play in the Premier League the hardest league alongside the cup competitions they're out of the Carabao Cup now ah they were beaten at home to Palace and I they are starting to falter in the league a little bit you know Spurs are are a a great team.
00:10:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:10:25
Louie Easton
They shouldn't be losing 4-1. You know, Dominic Solanke had an incredible, incredible game.
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:10:30
Louie Easton
That chip goal that he did as well. The Madison free kick. You know, these were freak goals, but they should have put up more of a fight. Spurs started the second half well. And, you know, Spurs haven't had exactly an incredible start to the season themselves.
00:10:46
Louie Easton
But, you know, Villa are Villa. Unai Emery is Unai Emery. And the team that Villa have, I saw that Tielemans did get a bit of a knock in the first half, but they shouldn't be losing 4-1.
00:10:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
uh
00:10:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
it Is that down to them being fatigued though and not being able to to ah provide the same calibre of energy that's required in a Premier League game?
00:11:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
As we know, they are physically demanding. And if you are stretching your squad, ah was that second half, but because the first half, they they were good and and solid defensively.
00:11:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then all of a sudden, as you say, a couple of moments, but the demise happened quite quickly. And and in the space of of that second half, they they didn't have much to show for themselves.
00:11:29
Louie Easton
Thank you.
00:11:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I don't know whether that was because of a lack of energy and ability to make it ah to match Tottenham's tutenum's efforts. I don't know what you think
00:11:45
Louie Easton
Yeah, I do think that fatigue is definitely part of it. um But saying that, it's also to do with, um you know, the sort of ah intensity that they play with in that team.
00:12:00
Louie Easton
You know, you you'd look for a lift ah in in these matches and you look to a home home crowd so they did have uh they didn't have a home crowd they were playing at uh spurs stadium which is obviously a very um intimidating stadium to go to i'm not saying this is the reason but part of the reason liverpool have been doing so well is because anfield has had that ability to lift the players in that second half and give them more of an intensity.
00:12:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't know. What do you think?
00:12:28
Louie Easton
Villa didn't have that.
00:12:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:12:30
Louie Easton
And ah they obviously have been fatigued. ah They went to ah Europe this week, ah last night, and they should have beaten club Bruges as well.
00:12:43
Louie Easton
So I think definitely this is weighing on them in terms of the amount of matches they're having to play. I don't think Villa from last season are getting beaten 4-1.
00:12:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
you.
00:12:54
Louie Easton
You know, they also have a bit of pressure on them now to do well because they've become a victim of their own standards and they're under the magnifying glass a lot more so i think there are a number of factors to consider here
00:13:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Yeah. like the Spurs game, though, was the third game in eight days and none of which of those previous games they actually won. and And as you said, they've already played Club Bruges and lost.
00:13:16
Louie Easton
and little
00:13:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that comes at a time where before they go to the leaders Liverpool at the weekend. um So it's not as though things are going to get any easier um for Villa.
00:13:29
Louie Easton
lot more so i think there are a number of factors to consider here
00:13:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And although you said that, you know, you predicted that you predict that they would struggle this year or no
00:13:39
Louie Easton
I did predict that, but I also couldn't decide who would finish fourth because it's, I thought that race for fourth place would be so open and it has been as we can see now
00:13:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah absolutely um and but there was a lot of people you know putting the penny in for for Villa doing a top four finish and managing um this hectic schedule.
00:14:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
And also, you know, like ah you know there was conversations about them you know pushing teams all the way. I just don't honestly don't see it. um They thought they had the depth and scope you know to manage the congestion of the fixtures.
00:14:10
Louie Easton
na
00:14:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Similarly, I feel to how Newcastle did and they seeming to see cracks. like I can see a lot of Newcast in this, how when Newcastle got back into the Champions League and people felt, you know, were they going to be able to match this and consistently keep, maintain these performances?
00:14:29
Louie Easton
No.
00:14:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I feel that Villa maybe have, as you said, got there too soon and it's a bit against, their own success as as being their own downfall as well
00:14:47
Louie Easton
It's been... Villa this season are basically doing what Newcastle did last season. Because Newcastle two seasons ago, I know it feels like a distant memory, they finished in the top four.
00:14:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah
00:14:58
Louie Easton
You know, that that is incredible. I think they finished third of that year, didn't they? So, you know, as soon as you add the Champions League aspect into it, they start going down the table, except this year it's just way more demanding.
00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
own success has been their own downfall as well. Yeah, yeah.
00:15:11
Louie Easton
So, yeah, ah I didn't see Villa finishing fourth. And for some reason, I actually considered West Ham to finish in the top four. That is, i well, I didn't put them as my final answer, but they were in the conversation and, well, less said about West Ham's season this year, the better, I think.
00:15:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:15:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, me and Tom Jodley had the same conversation. We backed West Ham all the way and it's it's probably the most embarrassing thing I've said on this podcast.
00:15:39
Louie Easton
well They just had such a good transfer window and now
00:15:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Shocking. Yeah, they did. They did.
00:15:44
Louie Easton
yeah
00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just not come together. However, I would say that ah Unai Emery is a manager who can turn around a bad vein of form. And I think he's proved himself as as as a very high-caliber manager.
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, hopefully, um for for me and not for you, but they turn it around at the weekend against Liverpool. um and and Liverpool end up slipping out of the top four and, you know, just being back to...
00:16:09
Louie Easton
good transfer window and now... Yeah. It would take more than that for us to slip out of the top four, not to mention the
00:16:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah

But we'd like to finish with a few little things. so we'd like to just touch on these subjects
00:17:29
Louie Easton
Thank
00:17:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
and the first one i'd like to shout out is borouth after ah very slow start what the start of the season which can be said from only managing one win in ah their first six games across all competitions.
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Since they've managed, you know, they've lost only once in five matches Thank you.
00:17:49
Louie Easton
you.
00:17:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
and beaten both Arsenal and City at the Vitality. um It's it quite an incredible change at Bournemouth.
00:17:56
Louie Easton
yeah
00:18:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
And and i don't I don't know, I feel that I think they deserve a shout-out today.
00:18:08
Louie Easton
Yeah. Absolutely. And this is another one of my predictions that came true. I know that I'm sensing a theme here in this episode, but I i didn't predict Bournemouth to win, but I did say ah in last week's ah Friday forecast with, them what's his name?
00:18:24
Louie Easton
CBBC guy. um Marcus, Marcus Ramthol, of course.
00:18:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they've... Marcus?
00:18:29
Louie Easton
How could I forget his name? I did say Bournemouth were capable of causing an upset. um And that's because City have had a little bit of um momentum slipping away.
00:18:43
Louie Easton
They've lost three times now in all competitions in a row. Before that, they narrowly beat Southampton 1-0 at home in a match that really, before it happened, we were saying, oh, City will just smash them up.
00:18:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Marcus.
00:18:59
Louie Easton
It wasn't the case. Southampton hit the bar as well. um So I did say, going into this match, Bournemouth had all the momentum. Man City had little momentum.
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:19:11
Louie Easton
And look what happened. You know, Guardiola scored again. That's six goals in eight matches now for him. ah But it was cancelled out by ah Evan Nilsson's goal, who's just becoming this incredible player.
00:19:25
Louie Easton
All the aesthetic as well to help him, but being Brazilian and being a big money buy from Portugal.
00:19:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
you.
00:19:30
Louie Easton
And Bournemouth looked the better team out there. You know, City got a little bit desperate towards the end and just did their usual of passing it around the box and looking for an opening.
00:19:41
Louie Easton
It didn't come. Haaland, with that miss at the end as well, looked very out of character for him. So, Bournemouth, well done to them, and long may it continue.
00:19:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:19:51
Louie Easton
It's hard to believe that they're only 10th at the moment.
00:19:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. And moving swiftly on to Forest and the incredible efforts that they've done ah this year. They ended a difficult battle last season to avoid relegation, finishing 17th, which most of us expected that probably this campaign was going to be a similar story.
00:20:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But there's been a revelation of the Premier League season for me so far across the first 10 matches with only with their 19 points already and they're more than halfway to the 32 accumulated last term.
00:20:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So, you know, we've not even made it to January and they're already over halfway to the full ah point total or from last year.
00:20:29
Louie Easton
Thank
00:20:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can't see them them changing. It's quite refreshing watching them and even games that they've lost and i think they've looked really really good and
00:20:49
Louie Easton
you. Yeah, I've always had a soft spot for Forrest. And, you know, at the time of them beating us at Anfield, I was thinking, goodness me, how have we let Forrest beat us?
00:21:01
Louie Easton
But now we we can see why. They've won three in a row now. They smashed West Ham 3-0. And Chris Wood, honestly, I think he is the story of the season.
00:21:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
they've lost, I think they've looked really, really good.
00:21:11
Louie Easton
You know, who would have predicted that he would have this run of form? what' Was it four goals in four games or whatever it is now? I don't know the exact stat. I think I saw a graphic similar to that.
00:21:22
Louie Easton
But, you know, they beat their rivals in the East Midlands away from home 3-1. And then they go back to the city ground and beat West Ham 3-0.
00:21:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:21:34
Louie Easton
So six goals in two games for them. And they're playing incredible football and their defence as well. I saw in their match against West Ham, Murillo and Milenkovic with an incredible um sort of partnership at the back.
00:21:50
Louie Easton
Milenkovic and Murillo as well with that freedom to move forward. And Milenkovic almost scored an absolute screamer. It just came to me on the edge of the box. Hit it so hard. Credit to Fabianski.
00:22:00
Louie Easton
He did have a good match today, despite this what the scoreline suggests. But Nottingham Forest, I'm quite pleased for them. I'm quite pleased to see them in the top half of the Premier League once again.
00:22:12
Louie Easton
It feels like I'm watching some sort of retro football show from the 1990s. It's incredible.
00:22:20
