Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily English Premier League Podcast, brought to you by GSPN. My name's Jopsage, and today I am joined by Nick. How are you doing, Nick?
00:00:17
Nick
I'm good. Very, very busy day of football. Be a lot to talk about.
00:00:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, very busy day. Very busy

Manchester United Managerial Shake-up

00:00:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
day. And we'll get straight into it with probably the biggest news of the day, which is Manchester United sack Eric Tenharg. What is your immediate reaction?
00:00:32
Nick
I'm heartbroken. He clearly deserved more time.
00:00:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:00:36
Nick
They didn't deserve to lose at the weekend. They had to trust the process.
00:00:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
There.
00:00:42
Nick
Obviously this this has been coming for a long time and ultimately it's the right decision for them and who they get next is going to be who Ineos are judged on, not necessarily
00:00:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:00:58
Nick
ah letting ten hogs stay, although that was clearly an error. Who they get next is going to be massive for their reputation.
00:01:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Definitely. I agree. I think it was an error. They kept him in too long. The obvious move would have been to replace him in the summer. They could have got Thomas Tuchel. There was a few options out there. the The hole that they've left themselves in now means that Tuchel's been taken by England, you know,
00:01:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Zagara Southgate will speak about him, but apparently he doesn't want to come straight back into management. So even if they were to go for him, I don't think they could. The the name that's coming out is is Ruben Amorim. What would you think about that appointment?
00:01:40
Nick
He's clearly massively rated. He almost went to Liverpool, almost went to West Ham, and there seemed to be some weird complications with that where he ended up apologizing for flying to London.
00:01:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:01:55
Nick
So he's clearly like one of the pioneers of like the next generation of managers, but you were saying before he started recording, he doesn't know English yet and he's going into a very weird group of players that need motivation and life brought into them.
00:02:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
To be fair, he he knows English.
00:02:15
Nick
so
00:02:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've seen a clip of him, a United Fan account posted it. I just don't think his English is that great. And I felt one of the biggest problems with Tanhag was his communication was awful.
00:02:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
He never gave up gave ah gave off any confidence. He couldn't speak the language properly. I mean, and then there were decent English options out there. Graham Potter obviously. I mean he didn't have a great time at Chelsea so I don't know if they would have wanted to take the risk. Apparently Shavi can speak pretty good English. So there was definitely other options out there but we'll speak about the other options in a little bit. Just to talk a bit more about Eric Janog's time at the club.

Challenges in Manchester United's Season

00:02:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've obviously started the season so poorly. They're in 14th in the league. They've drawn their three first games in the Europa League. Do you feel like even though we're still so early in the season
00:03:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because of the way that the board have acted and let him stay the song, do you feel like Manchester United's season is already ruined?
00:03:19
Nick
it I mean it obviously depends who comes in but they're not gonna be able to get Champions League you'd think but then you look at the table there I think there are two points behind Tottenham and you don't
00:03:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:03:35
Nick
You look at time they haven't had a great start, but if when you're looking at United you go Oh, they've had a terrible start. So It's not like they can't like get this season back because ultimately this is their second worst start behind 2019 20 under Solskjaer and they finished third that season so Yeah like
00:03:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. Okay, interesting start. Yeah, so I guess they could they could bring it back. We'll talk a bit about some of the the other options now. Who would have been your pick? Obviously, you're not a United fan, but looking at from an objective point of view, if you're a United fan, who would you say is the best managerial option out there?
00:04:17
Nick
It's so difficult because if they acted in the international break like we all expected, Touche was clearly or was clearly the best option available that didn't have a job.
00:04:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:04:28
Nick
but So now they're being forced to essentially go for someone in a job and pay compensation. so I mean there were Nagelsmann links and I think he's incredible But I don't see why he'd leave Germany for Man United.
00:04:46
Nick
I was saying to some people earlier like Why would any smart manager take this job?
00:04:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah, nice.
00:04:52
Nick
Like it's it's just it's a poison chalice like so Never never
00:04:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it is because there was rumors of Simone and Zaghi being linked to the job, but my initial reaction to that is, Insamalana, you know, the best team in Italy right now and have been for the past two years, and he's set in the job, fans love him, why would any top manager in the job come to United? And actually, I think that the names that are being linked with United Show how far they've fallen. I mean, I've just said that the the pool of available managers isn't great but maybe ten years ago say You know at the end of Sir Alex Ferguson's time if you're not looking for a manager mid-season Loads of managers who were in the top jobs would have been linked and they would have been interested given the size and success of the club Whereas now the sort of managers that are in jobs who are being linked a Reuben Amorim and Thomas Frank
00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think, well, I don't know much about Amarin, but I know Frank's a great manager and I think he will go on to achieve great things. But right now, is that an indication of how far Manchester United have fallen?
00:06:03
Nick
I think you it's partly that and partly just the manager of landscape in general for really bad at the moment, because even if they sacked him in the summer, you saw that like the America around of like, or not merry around the, the amount of managers that clubs who were looking for a manager had to go through to eventually get someone that they wanted and Although they're asleep They can't seem to find any momentum. They had that good first season under ten hard, but all post Ferguson Like they're trying to find something and I think this is this is the lowest Man United are being viewed as as a club right now like I saw something earlier on the athletic and it was talking about like a club elo level which is something
00:06:54
Nick
like to do with like how clubs are rated based on results or something and This was their lowest like club elo whatever you want that to mean essentially where where you would rank clubs based on results, I think and It's lower now than it was under any previous manager.
00:07:14
Nick
Moi, Solshire, whoever So and I think that fits like the general conversation of how people view united at the moment
00:07:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. i
00:07:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's interesting because if you look at it at face value, Everton has had a successful time in the club. You know, a trophy in each season is a success for any manager. You know, it's more than Michael Artes has had. I'm not trying to say by any means that, you know, he's had a better time or anything. But even given that success,
00:07:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I felt like when Manchester United were managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the fans were loving the football. There was obviously that genuine connection with Solskjaer. Everything felt great with Mourinho even, you know, you've got this legendary manager and he achieved great success trophies-wise. Right now it feels like
00:08:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fans are like, forget the trophies, they mean nothing. The style of football that we're seeing, I mean, that's one of the biggest issues, wasn't it? In two years at the club, there was no discernible style of play that you could identify with 10 hard. how How much of a an issue do you think that was?
00:08:23
Nick
Well, you knew what to expect, and that was to not know what to expect for every game. Like you say, they never showed patterns of play. The only thing I could tell you that they would consistently do, a fullback would invert, but it wasn't seemingly for a good reason. It didn't necessarily help them too much.
00:08:48
Nick
But there was something in, I think they did it in the Community Shield and they were doing it in preseason, like a certain, I think they were pressing in like a 4-2-4 and there was excitement in preseason from United fans. And then they came into this season and they ditched everything they'd done. like So there was never a consistent style of play if, well, there wasn't a style of play. that Like you say, that was the big problem.
00:09:16
Nick
so
00:09:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:17
Nick
and you were you were looking at people like Ange come in and instantly he was stubborn to what principles he'd do quite often to his own downfall but you knew what to expect and it would get them results more often than United so they finished higher than them last year So I think that's what their next manager has to quickly get a style to play underway, even if it's to the detriment of short-term success.
00:09:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree. And we'll see if Manchester United get that um Marine deal

Ballon d'Or Ceremony Surprises

00:10:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
for that, Nick. Now we're going to talk about a ceremony that is happening as we speak, the Ballon d'Or ceremony. Now, I think for the last two months or so, people have been quite certain that Venetius was going to win it. There was a lot of talk before the Euros, who's going to win it if Harry Kane won the Bundesliga and the Euros, it could have been him. If Bellingham won the Champions League and the Euros, it would have been him.
00:10:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
England didn't end up winning the Euros and Spain obviously won the Euros which threw in a bit of a debate about Rodry given that City won the Premier League but I think most people were in clear agreement that it should have been Venetius and then it was going to be Venetius and to today on the day of the ceremony For Richard Romano tweeted out saying that no real Madrid players are going to the ceremony. They're boycotting it Venetius isn't going to be there now at the time of recording We don't know who's won it, which is why we're debating this um a Are you surprised that it's not well it could still be Venetius, but would you be surprised if it's not Venetius?
00:11:29
Nick
uh i think yeah now i'd be surprised if it was vanicius but before today i'd be very like it seemed a done deal like and then coming into the today clearly this is a like press release from roma drud pretty much they've told journalists
00:11:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.

Football's Evolution to Team-based Success

00:11:51
Nick
vinicious isn't winning so we're not going it's because vinicious and you don't go in and that felt like the top three or the rumor top three anyway so it feels like it's going to be rogerie
00:11:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it feels like you asked me, Roger.
00:12:06
Nick
which you can't really argue against massively like as much as Venetius is unbelievable he is able to win Real Madrid came single-handedly in the Champions League so consistently but you look at Rodri and what he done like he was doing so many people's jobs in that man's city midfield last season and So he's one of the most important players to a club in world football, arguably. And although that is a DM and people want to say like, this is the end of football thought sort of thing, but either of them would be deserving. And this time it's Rodry and i dont um I don't mind really.
00:12:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, I agree with you in that you can't argue Roger's importance or his quality. Just for me, it it feels like a shame, not that a defensive way minded player is winning it because I've got no issue with that. I just feel like Roger, the sort of player he is, you know,
00:13:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
he's the sort of player who cleans up at the back, progresses the ball, you know, into forward players. Obviously he scored a few bangers last season, some really clutch goals, but just for me, like, I feel like I'd be happy with the center back winning it if they were the standout player.
00:13:33
Nick
Thank you.
00:13:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd be happy with the full back winning it if they were standout player. When Luca Modric won it, I was delighted because he's one of my favorite midfielders ever. I just feel like Rodri is a bit of a He's an excellent player, but you know what I mean? When you're watching a game, he doesn't really stand out. You're not like, oh, Rodry was fantastic in that game. that That's the sort of way that I feel. So I'm a bit disappointed that he's winning it. I mean, what do you think about that?
00:13:56
Nick
I guess it's it's more damning on football in the last 12 months and you can probably extend that to... it's more of... it doesn't let individuals shine which is why when you're looking at players individually shining it's Rowan Madrid because they have Angelotti who is arguably bailed out by the star players quite often this year.
00:14:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And.
00:14:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
There.
00:14:21
Nick
And they those star players are the freest of any major team. So it you're looking at teams rather than individuals now. And Roger is almost at the heart of that because the team were revolves around him. But it's not like something incredible individually that sort what of gets you off your seat. It's keeping the game ticking along.
00:14:48
Nick
and That's what football is at the moment and maybe it will change in the future. But right now that's just how it is For me I think that's de Bruyne because
00:14:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've got an interesting question. If Roger wins the Ballon d'Or later tonight and he stays at City for another couple years achieving this success, does he end up as Manchester City's greatest ever player?
00:15:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Regardless of the Ballon d'Or,
00:15:19
Nick
Yeah, just because De Bruyne has longevity. Do you remember when he came back against Newcastle? I think it was last year and instantly there's that fear factor.
00:15:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:15:32
Nick
He'd been out for months and I'm sure he'll will come back again this season and have that fear factor. So, obviously it could be Harland in the future if he stays, but for me, De Bruyne is a Premier League legend. like And it's difficult for a DM to overtake that, but he'll definitely be one of their best of all time.
00:15:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah that's for sure. I mean it's it's interesting as well because when when it was rumored and thought that Venetius was going to win it, people were saying like it's such a shame that you know Venetius is probably half the player Neymar was and Neymar never managed to win it. It's fit. The same with Busquets. You know, for me, Busquets was the greatest defensive midfielder that I've ever seen. And he never even came close to winning the Ballon d'Or. And now it looks like Roger is going to win it. And I know it's all relative, but it's just a bit weird. Anyway, we will see who wins the Ballon d'Or tonight. But let me tell you about the Global Sports Podcast Network.

Arsenal vs Liverpool: A Tactical Draw

00:17:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now Nick, I want to end today's show speaking quickly about Arsenal Liverpool. That was the big game yesterday, the big game of the weekend. It ended to all. Arsenal took the lead twice and were pegged back twice. Now you are a resident Arsenal fan. How did you feel? Because I was at the game and I felt like it was a missed opportunity for Arsenal. I didn't think that Liverpool were very good. I was actually quite disappointed with Liverpool. um But I guess it's a sign of a great team that they managed to to draw it because I think they were lucky to draw that. What did you think?
00:17:41
Nick
I think first half was one of our best halves this season, especially after the equalizer. We we had them pinned in their own in their third for like 30 minutes, if I like. So we should have capitalized more on that pressure. We did eventually get the goal before halftime, which was crucial, as you could tell. But from how Liverpool Liverpool came out in the second half, if we hadn't,
00:18:08
Nick
got that goal before half time then and who knows what would happen but Saka came back looked unbelievable yesterday the left side couldn't deal with him at all but that second half we sat too deep we Arguably weren't brave enough, but I think We just lost so much confidence in playing out and like coming up as a defense when Gabriel went off Kivi or although he's a center back he's played more at left back for us and center back and He makes the mistake for that goal for me. I think there's a couple of mistakes for this that goal you could argue
00:18:54
Nick
Martinelli's touch is horrendous for from what was like a near enough perfect pass from Miles Lewis Skelly then you can argue Miles Lewis Skelly doesn't get back quick enough but ultimately Kivi or Jumps up when he probably doesn't need to and Ben White like it's he has to try and block the pass and Nunez can just wait and pass it behind him like I think
00:19:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:21
Nick
yeah we probably should have won but i don't i think the withdrawal was probably fair in the end that i think like you said livable were livable were wasteful trent was pretty terrible i think salah wasn't particularly effective either so when you're looking at that sort of thing you go probably should have got that over the line but
00:19:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:47
Nick
It's difficult when we we've got our own injuries and suspensions and as much as Sky were running a sort of no-excusive narrative, which I didn't entirely understand, I think it's not the worst result at this point in the season.
00:19:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's definitely not the worst result. It means that you are still four points behind Liverpool, five points behind Manchester City.

Open Premier League Title Race

00:20:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think i think it's going to be quite an open open title race. And I don't think that any team in it is has hit great heights yet. I think Manchester City are very much still trying to recover from losing Rotary.
00:20:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've had some fairly straightforward fixtures that they've not made lightwork of. They just beat Wolves in the 95th minute. They beat Southampton by one goal to nil. you know Tough work for them. Liverpool, although their record on the slot is amazing,
00:20:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they're still yet to to really hit the heights and obviously Arsenal, you mentioned suspension, injury, the style of play, none of it's really clicked yet and I feel like all three teams this season are going to drop more points than usual. I think that's my prediction but I agree Arsenal are still very much in it. On Bakaia Saka because you know, he was fantastic and he's just come back from an injury. His goal was so beautiful, the way he cut inside Andy Robertson and then slotted it away. And he e caused Robertson problems all game, as you mentioned. How lucky do you feel as an Arsenal fan to to have someone like Vakaya Saka?
00:21:26
Nick
he's been bailing us out since his debut like this guys he doesn't get the credit he deserves and he doesn't get the attention he deserves we were previously talking about the Ballon d'Or and as much as the the award can it means as much as you want it to mean he's come 21st behind the likes of Emmy Martinez at 18th this is
00:21:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:21:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Haakan Tolonoglu is ahead of him as well, I think.
00:21:53
Nick
This is the second best right winger in the world behind Salah.
00:21:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:57
Nick
I don't think it's a debate.
00:21:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree. I agree.
00:22:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I feel like he's he's still got more respect to be put on his name. And Cole Palmer was 25th in the Ballon d'Or rankings as well. Just want to get that out there.
00:22:01
Nick
and
00:22:10
Nick
yeah Salah's not even in it.
00:22:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know that is insane.
00:22:14
Nick
but yeah yeah ultimately Like I say, it means as much as you want it to mean. like
00:22:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah I mean you wouldn't be saying that if Saka won it but I'll take your point.
00:22:19
Nick
so
00:22:22
Nick
Of course, Noble. yeah
00:22:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think if Arsenal were to win a Premier League and you know England were to win a trophy and Saka was getting this sort of output he'd definitely been in the top three at least.
00:22:39
Nick
he I mean, he was England's best player on the Euros.
00:22:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah he probably was.
00:22:44
Nick
So he's so unbelievably consistent that is so it's to his own detriment. And the like the way he plays, I think his aesthetics and also make people not appreciate him as much, which
00:22:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
because he's just yeah he's not like a yamao like tricky and he just does the basics really well yeah like yeah
00:23:03
Nick
he's so He's just so efficient. light people don't People don't really talk about his dribbling because one, he has two or three people in most games.
00:23:16
Nick
But you see, as soon as he gets a 1v1 like he had against Robertson consistently yesterday, he will kill them.
00:23:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
couldn't deal with it.
00:23:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:23
Nick
like
00:23:24
Nick
And the I think most of his goals or assists this season are either openers, equalizers, or ah like the go-ahead goal. Like, he's so important for getting us over the line, especially without Erdogan and with the rest of our front line in terrible form, really, apart from probably Havertz, who just had a bad game yesterday.
00:23:51
Nick
We need him to stay fit and keep like bailing us out essentially. ah yeah I know you were saying that You think ever every team will drop points?
00:24:03
Nick
I genuinely think we're the best of the three teams Obviously, I'm biased but I think at 11 v 11 fully fit or it's hard to say fully fit because fully fit there's Roger he's in the team and Man City are the best but
00:24:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:18
Nick
I think with Rodri out right now, I think we're the best of the three, we just need to stop being masters of our own downfall and also we take a lead, we need to like keep pressing a bit more because it's a few times now we've scored one or two or come one or two ahead and We've become a bit too negative for my liking.
00:24:40
Nick
I think we need to be a bit braver and back ourselves a bit because we are incredible at football. like And you saw that in the first half. We just need to show it a little bit more and get over the line.
00:24:53
Nick
like I think this title is there to be won.
00:24:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, completely agree. Yeah, I agree. Well, your next test is against Newcastle. Another tough game that will be, and we will discuss that next week. for That is all from us for now. Thanks for listening to today's episode of the Daily English Premier League Podcast. It's goodbye from me.
00:25:13
Nick
and it's goodbye from me.
