Introduction to the EPL Podcast

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the daily English Premier League podcast brought to you by GSPN. My name is Jobtate and today I'm joined by Nick. How are we doing, Nick?
00:00:17
Nick
I'm doing good, it's bonfire night so if you hear fireworks in the background, don't be alarmed.
00:00:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good point. Well, section one, we're going to discuss the Champions League. Now at the time of recording, it is Tuesday evening. No Champions League games have started yet.

Sporting vs Man City: Amorim's Challenge

00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we'll dive into the biggest talking biggest game in my opinion because of the narrative. Sporting against Manchester City, Ruben Ammarim has been asked a lot about it these past few days. um I think he said a quote like,
00:00:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
If I win, I'll be the next Sir Alex Ferguson. If I lose, you know, I'll be the worst manager ever sort of thing. I mean, it's a hugely, it's a huge pressure game for Amorim really. It's sort of this, it's one of those games. He's got two games left for sporting. It's probably one of the last games he would have wished for because if they lose and say that they lose quite badly, which is a possibility to play Man City, you know, United fans are going to completely lose it. ah What do you think?
00:01:19
Nick
he's well i've already seen united fans i know getting on the sporting train they were watching the game on friday celebrating the goal so no doubt it'll be the game that united fans go to tonight and it is a massive game for him it's a depleted city side so it's a good chance for sporting to get a result against them as well and he'll already have the fans and some of the media are on side if he does get that result
00:01:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, it's going to be an interesting game.

Pep's Squad Concerns for Champions League

00:01:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Pep Guardiola said midweek, last week, after the Spurs game, that he has 13 fit players in his squad. Now, whether he's being honest or not, who knows? Because he also said, Rico Luis, we cannot rest him. And he proceeded to rest him against Bournemouth.
00:02:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
so you have to take what he says with a pinch of salt. I mean, when you look at the Champions League standings after three games, sporting and Man City are level on seven points, two men's in a draw each. I mean, it's still very difficult to make heads or tails if this Champions League standing you know there's you look down the table and no one's really out of it yet you don't know if anyone's pulled away it's such a I think that they're completely messed up with this this league phase but how how important do you think this game is for for Amurim do you think that he will have tried to put in some extra impetus to his sporting squad even if you know he's thinking in his head this could benefit me in the future or do you think he's just laser focused with sporting
00:02:57
Nick
I think from a sporting standpoint, it'll be big for him because he'll want to go out on a high. like i think I'd imagine for sporting fans it's already a bit controversial that he's leaving mid-season.
00:03:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:12
Nick
He said before he wanted to win two League of Portugals in a row and he's leaving when they're already quite considerably in front at the top of the league already.
00:03:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:25
Nick
So I think I want to give them a result to go out on I imagine he's got one more game this weekend But this will this is the the landmark game for him to go out on so it will be massive for him from that point of view and then like we've said from a Man United or Premier League point of view
00:03:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:03:46
Nick
there's already questions being asked about his the lack of um versatility shown in four years at sporting so it'll be an early test to see how he does against a top Premier League side so it's massive from both teams point of view really.
00:04:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
For sure.

Liverpool vs Bayer: Pre-match Expectations

00:04:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, the other Premier League game tonight is Liverpool against Bayern Leverkusen. And as you mentioned before we came on air, the big talking point around that is, you know, Shelby Alonso, the manager who never came to Liverpool. and Liverpool have started the Champions League campaign with a perfect rough court of three wins from three. Leverkusen also on seven points like Sporting and Man City. How important do you think this game is? At Anfield, I feel like a lot of the fans especially will be wanting Liverpool to get a big win to sort of shove it in Alonso's face. What do you think?
00:04:43
Nick
Yeah, I think they'll definitely go in as favorite slots already cemented himself for Liverpool fans. So I don't think there'll be any jealousy towards Jaby Alonso. Probably a bit of a homecoming for him.
00:04:58
Nick
and You'd expect them to still win. Leverkusen aren't what they were last year. It's not really that surprise factor anymore. We saw the same thing with arsal Arsenal after 22-23 going into the season after.
00:05:11
Nick
you don't get that but You don't get the room to play as much.
00:05:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:16
Nick
So I'd expect, especially at home, Liverpool to get kept the job done and go four wins from four. but It will still be probably be one of the more entertaining games tonight as well, because with both with how both sides wanted to play, it could get relatively basketball-y, so it would definitely be one to watch.

Arsenal vs Inter: Arteta's Form Under Scrutiny

00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
100% and tomorrow the big one is probably into against Arsenal now Nick you are a resident Arsenal fan don't need to tell you about the form that you guys are in I think the first question I'd ask is how worried are you? Because I've seen some crazy takes on social media. I've i've genuinely seen a lot of, ah not a lot, I've seen this a sizable amount of Arsenal fans who have turned completely on our Tessa and want him gone. Now I assume you're more rational than that, but how much of a concern is the form and the performances for you?
00:06:17
Nick
I think the Arteta routers are a bit chronically online and almost looking for engagement and baiting a bit, but I think it's definitely reasonable to be critical of Arteta.
00:06:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:33
Nick
The performances without Erdogan have been incredibly one-dimensional and we saw this last year, it goes through a slump and people, and like the fans are going, we need we need to adapt.
00:06:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
you
00:06:47
Nick
and then he eventually does adapt and we saw the run we went on from January until the end of the season but it's again where there's a massive like moment, Erdogan's out, what are you gonna do and it seemed like the past few games especially at Newcastle you just block the ball to Saka and you defend your set piece as well you'll get a result against Arsenal at the moment
00:07:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello. Hello.
00:07:14
Nick
and with Erdogan potentially back for tomorrow's game, but Rice not travelling importantly. Is this was already ah the toughest game we'd we were going to have this champions league campaign It's just get a whole lot harder if right with rice not there and i'd imagine udgard won't start still but You go into the san zero playing against a mid block Interfaced the fifth most shots in the champions league, but i've still not conceded.
00:07:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we wouldn't think so.
00:07:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:07:48
Nick
We've conceded like the second least but So it'll be interesting, it'll be interesting to see if Inter let us have the ball or not.
00:07:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
evil
00:07:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, actually, as you said that, I'm just looking at the stats here.
00:07:56
Nick
I think that'll be...
00:07:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've both conceded zero goals in the Champions League.
00:08:02
Nick
Yeah.
00:08:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, I mean, odds on a nil-nil tomorrow.
00:08:06
Nick
I'd take a 0-0.
00:08:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's actually to be quite a boring game. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a draw.
00:08:11
Nick
Do not, do not watch this game. Much like don't watch Arsenal vs City games, do not watch this game.
00:08:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:08:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, good.
00:08:18
Nick
Because we've also only scored in the first half, so...
00:08:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Good

Premier League Title Race Analysis

00:08:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
advice. I mean, I guess after the weekend's results with City dropping points, Arsenal dropping points and Liverpool barely scraping the win, do you think this year's title race is going to be one where the quality drops off a bit and a lot more points are dropped from all three teams?
00:08:44
Nick
Yeah I think especially with the legginess we're already seeing with 10 games into the Premier League season and we're seeing City obviously depleted but they just looked off it against Bournemouth. Bournemouth should have scored four or five really.
00:08:59
Nick
we just lacked any urgency as well it was just Liverpool really other three main title contenders who were able to bring reinforcements off the bench and change the game and that's what got them the result they got two goals in three minutes against Brighton and bailed themselves out a bit they were much better second half even before the changes but that first half Brian could have been out and out of sight and even with Villa they they'd lose 4-1 at the weekend and it was the first time this season they'd failed to turn turn the ball over in the opposition third so you're seeing the legginess from them as well and obviously it was a bit of an expectation they might drop off this season but
00:09:45
Nick
there is's it might be happening a bit earlier than many expected and we're obviously going into that period now where you're playing two games a week every week for European side so I think like you say we'll see much more drop points. I know you said the same last week and I sort of disagreed but I definitely see a point now after this weekend they all could have dropped points at the top of the table and we're already down to fifth and

Man United vs Chelsea: Match Reflection

00:10:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:10:14
Nick
You got teams fans going.
00:10:16
Nick
Oh, we're only three points of Arsenal and it has an Arsenal fan going like leave it leave us alone
00:10:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
a I was thinking that. I saw Chelsea fans saying if we win against United, we would be ahead of Arsenal. Obviously, it didn't end up happening. We'll come on to that next section. Quite a nice segue, actually. But first, Nick, could you tell us about Zencaster?

00:11:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thanks for that, Nick. As I mentioned, we will be discussing Manchester United against Chelsea on Sunday. Finished one all, relatively boring game to be honest. One of the not so great watches of the season so far.
00:11:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah i mean yeah Yeah, not really a great result for for either side. You know, United went ahead and held onto a lead for about three minutes. Speaking as a Chelsea fan, I know a lot of our fans expected and hoped that this would be the game that we could ah find our form again at Old Trafford because our record there over the last 10 years is absolutely woeful. um And I think that United were there for the taking a little bit. You know, we didn't play well enough to get the win. But I think in the end, a draw was probably a fair result. What was your reflection on it?
00:11:55
Nick
Yeah, it's it' the most drawn fixture in the Premier League and once again, I think it's up to 37 draws now.
00:11:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:12:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
a
00:12:03
Nick
you Last season, this would probably would have been seen as a decent result for Chelsea, am I right in thinking?
00:12:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh yeah, definitely.
00:12:11
Nick
but now your expectations are much higher going into that game thinking we'll smash these a lot and you just never really got going in it felt like so yeah i think it's a worth definitely a worse result for chelsea than it is for man united but ha i mean
00:12:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:12:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:30
Nick
Man United are so sloppy in front of goal. Gun Acho had a really poor game and he's playing off the left instead of Rashford. It would be interesting to see what Amurim does with those two ah when he comes in because we're more used to seeing Rashford off the left side but then he's
00:12:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:12:51
Nick
Ganach is playing badly and Rashford's the one getting subbed off so it's a bit of an odd situation from a united point of view but from a chelsea point of view are you feeling like in these three games you already had against the big six that colp palm is struggling to get an influence on the game because he's he's not scored or assisted in any of them yet but he did have a decent record last year, seven goals, one assist, four of those did come against United, three of those four were a hat-trick and I think the fourth three. So he's shown he shoe can influence these big six games, but he's struggling so far and we've seen him being marked out of the game. Do you think that's something Maresca's going to have to adapt for? You need to find different solutions?
00:13:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um it's difficult to say i definitely take your point about his record against the big six i actually think that generally he's had a slower start to this season he's his numbers obviously great but that's because he's had two incredible games against brighten and waltz where he's got about i think he's got nine goals and assists in those two games which is ridiculous uh i'm not too concerned because I'd put it in the context of, you've still got to consider not even his age, but his lack of experience. you know He's basically a year and three months into his career, into his Premier League career when you think of it like that. um And Maresca, even since the start of the season, has shifted his approach. At the start of the season, Maresca had him playing like out wide, not using his freedom inside the pitch.
00:14:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
and fans were really unhappy and within two or three games he'd switched that and had him playing like Pochettino had him last season so yeah I'm sure that Maresca and Palmer will be speaking about that but I'm not too concerned just because I'd still look at Palmer and think he's still got a long way to go a lot of things to learn about his own game same with Maresca you know he's only been in charge for 15-16 games in all competitions so let's see it's a bit I don't know it's a bit of a concern the way that we played against United but I'd like to think I'm a more rational sort of fan who doesn't you know throw their toys out the pram we played very well against Liverpool um and against City on the first day you know you can't count that because it was literally Maresca's first ever game so I think this game actually this weekend against Arsenal, Chelsea Arsenal that'll be a big one because
00:15:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've got two teams who are, you know, for very different reasons needing the result. It's at Stanford bridge. And after the way you lot humiliated us, what was it? Five nil last season. Um, I think we'll be wanting revenge. And so it'll be interesting to see how that one goes. Are you scared of that game or how'd you feel?
00:15:52
Nick
I'm a bit concerned with coming in off of the Inter game because obviously you just play a different, you have a different squad registered for your conference league games and obviously you're at home against a team from Armenia with all respect to Noah.
00:16:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. and
00:16:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:08
Nick
i So obviously you're going a little bit fresher but I think there's concern, not necessarily with who our opponents at the moment, it's more concern with ourselves.
00:16:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.

Is Arteta's Future at Arsenal in Jeopardy?

00:16:21
Nick
So if we go to Stamford Bridge and play like we did last weekend, the concerns will only get louder around Arteta.
00:16:32
Nick
Obviously, Eddu left yesterday and the guys spoke about on the podcast yesterday. I don't think that's like the club cracking or a fracturing of relations, really.
00:16:46
Nick
I think it's just a guy leaving for triple of his salary for a more preferred role.
00:16:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I was gonna say that. like It's life-changing money really, the require that you can't say no to.
00:16:53
Nick
Yeah, exactly.
00:16:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, with with the game this weekend and and the way that the things are going for you guys at the minute, ah do you feel like a win would again completely flip the narrative? And also with the Artessa thing,
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean it's a bit of a tricky question but how much leeway would you give him in terms of ah how long has he got to win a trophy or do something big because i think having debated a few arsenal fans who want him out a lot of them were sort of saying the reason we want him out is we know he's completely changed the culture of the club and he's got us to this point now but You know, we've bottled the Premier League last season, really, you know, you you could have won it the season before as well. But the season before that you bottle top four is, and he's only won an Epic Cup. Now I'm, I'm trying to play devil's advocate and listen, if I was an Arsenal fan, I would 100% back our

Arsenal's Trophy Aspirations

00:17:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
tester. Even as a Chelsea fan, it pleases me to hear that Arsenal fans are turning on him because you're not going to find a manager that good.
00:18:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I guess the question I'm asking is at what point does he have to start winning something and does he have to deliver on this project?
00:18:12
Nick
I think ah for this weekend, just start start off with you say, I think this weekend's probably must win, not for his own job security, but sort of just for like the general atmosphere.
00:18:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
the tower
00:18:25
Nick
I know I said a few weeks ago, even the vibes were low around the club and we were still winning. So I think another like lot or another set of drop points and you're thinking, oh, the title title's gone already.
00:18:40
Nick
i' At the moment I'm thinking, we sort of went through this slump and although it took a ridiculous run that we went on, we still took the title to the last day. And like we were speaking to speaking about sorry previously, there'll probably be more points dropped this year than most years.
00:18:59
Nick
So for him delivering with a trophy, the some of the cup exits are pretty poor, but at the same time, we've had some horrific draws the last few years. I think we went out to City last year in... ah No, we went out to City two years ago, sorry. We went in the Carabao Cup. We went out to Liverpool in the third round last year.
00:19:27
Nick
we had a really bad exit last year against West Ham where we should have won and Nobody could put the ball in the net. So I think with the cups there's a little bit of a concern but we've got much we got a really favorable run so far in the Carabao so we should be one foot in the semis already and although the Carabao isn't something to cheer about like I imagine you're about to say but I those those big trophies have to come probably not even necessarily this year I'm talking about Premier League and Champions League but yeah I think Champions League semi-finals potentially it's also there's so always so much context that you need from like the exits like
00:19:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, even on... on Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
00:20:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:20:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:20:18
Nick
last year, first year back in the Champions League, probably a bit of a naivety and then it's so difficult to say at the moment like how much does he have to deliver because we don't know what the context is going to be but
00:20:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i know it's I know it's a difficult question, but I think some Arsenal fans were also saying, you know, Arteta's taken us as far as he can. We need someone else to deliver that trophy. So, I mean, it's a difficult question to answer, but also there has to be some sort of line in the sand, you know, maybe not from fans, but from the, you know, the board or whoever, there's got to be some thing of like, right, maybe this season, if we, like you said, get to the semi-finals of the Champions League and win the Carabar Cup.
00:21:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
But next season, if we don't deliver a Premier League or Champions League, that's it. Because from a player's perspective as well, you know if I was a player in Arsenal right now, I'd be delighted with how well you're doing and the style of play and everything. But a player like William Saliba, Real Madrid are going to come knocking at some point. A player like Martin Erdogan, who's completely transformed his career,
00:21:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
clubs like Barcelona, Bayern, Real, you know, clubs want these players. Look at Trent Alexander-Arnold. I mean, nothing's been confirmed yet, but if you were to ask me, I'd say he's headed to Madrid. And I think his interviews in the last two months have almost confirmed that. And that's the result of Liverpool not delivering in the last four years since they won the Premier League, three, four years.
00:21:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, they've been great, great football, but they've won nothing. um And these top players want to move on. They want to progress their careers. So I guess, you know, like you said, there's a lot of context to it. But at some point, and you've got to win the big trophies.
00:22:08
Nick
Yeah, i think I think if I was to put a timeframe on it, he has to end of next season to win either the Premier League or Champions League before like even really loyal fans are going, like, do we need we need someone who will get us over the line?
00:22:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
something
00:22:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:26
Nick
But, I mean, like I said, context will matter, but I would even potentially give him an extra year, but
00:22:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really?
00:22:33
Nick
I ah completely understand what you're saying. and like If we haven't won either in the next and by the end of next season, it's completely understandable for someone like Saliba to be looking to Real Madrid as much as he seems to adore Arsenal with the way he celebrates every goal.
00:22:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:22:54
Nick
Yeah, we need to get over the line eventually. You're going up against Pep who has lost three titles ever. So when you put it like that, like he's going up against the best ever for like ridiculous point titles.
00:23:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
<unk> and Yeah.
00:23:12
Nick
Let's say i say Pep leaves end of this year and he doesn't win it next year, then I think serious questions will begin to be asked. Perhaps not here anymore, like get us over the line.
00:23:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah. I agree.
00:23:26
Nick
But I think i think that that the attacking signings will also be questioned if they're not made next summer.
00:23:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've got one more question for you, Nick, before we wrap up today's episode.

Arsenal's Transfer Strategy

00:23:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's on what you just mentioned, signings, because I've seen a lot of people talking about this as well. After how close you came last season, where the summer of Calafiori, Sterling and Marino, do you feel like that's an underwhelming transfer window?
00:23:55
Nick
I think it's underwhelming, yes, because there was no landmark attacker. I think there's a bit neck nick ah bit of that we didn't go and get a marquee left winger. I don't necessarily think striker has to be the position. I think left wingers more of an issue because you're looking at Martinelli, Trossard, or Jesus there.
00:24:23
Nick
and you don't rep appeal feel particularly inspired by any of them, especially when they're all out of form at the moment.
00:24:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:24:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:24:30
Nick
So I think Marina of Califiori, I think at the moment they're being looked at a bit negatively just because of how badly we're playing, I don't think.
00:24:42
Nick
I think Callifuri's played pretty well, I think Marino is still learning the system a bit but I think he'll do everything Jack was doing and that's what Arsenal fans would have wanted but I think next year there has to be that marquee left winger and for me it's two names, Liao and Rodrigo and i think yeah I think Rodrigo's the better option
00:24:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:25:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Yeah, I was thinking
00:25:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I also think he's, I think Rodrigo's attainable as well because a lot of people say that his preferred position is left wing and with Venetius, you know, he had the better player ahead of him.
00:25:10
Nick
But I adore Liao. Yep.
00:25:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now with Mbappe as well, he's got two better players in him who both want that left wing spot. And I think one of those who will be attainable, um I'm sure Liao as well at Milan because, you know,
00:25:36
Nick
He's been left out last three games by Finsaker.
00:25:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean,
00:25:39
Nick
So he could even be he could even be available in January. like I think it's.
00:25:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean that might be pushing it.
00:25:44
Nick
Yeah, but if Fonseca survives until then, like it could be pretend like potentially available.

I think we might look at Sheshko again because obviously we tried to sign him this summer early on in the window and then he re-signed a new contract. I wouldn't be surprised if he's got a similar for at release clause like Harland had at Dortmund when he re-signed obviously different levels of player, but I think he's clearly the sort of build that Arteta would want like a tall physical striker and he's pretty lethal so if let's say we got Rodrigo and Sheshko I imagine we'll make another defensive signing because as many as we've made uh Zinchenko will leave

Tieni will leave, Tomiyasu will probably leave just because he's injured all the time Kivio might leave so if you take four out from that defense we'll probably make more defensive signings as much as people will hate that we might need a DM if Kai doesn't resign so the more you talk about the more you go next to my window could be very expensive
