I'm joined by Braden Bent who's worked in TV, radio and media since he was eight years old. His adventures are taking him all over the world covering documentaries, news, sports, entertainment and even some acting in drama and children's TV.

Achievements and Roles

Global Sports Podcast Network

00:00:46
Braydon Bent
Thank you very much for having me on. What an introduction that is. I mean, the pressure's on now. but you but
00:00:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, um yeah, really real pleasure ah to have you along. Quite the CV and it's it's crazy. I mean, you've been at this for a very long time, um probably even longer than myself because I remember you and I first met back in 2019 and we were working on a show together.
00:01:07
Braydon Bent
Yes.
00:01:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I remember you turning up on set and being like, I've been watching him on my telly. I've been watching him every night.
00:01:16
Braydon Bent
I know. come in again
00:01:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that was all or nothing.
00:01:20
Braydon Bent
local Yeah, of course. And um yeah, it's been it's been brilliant. been Been doing it a while now. It's weird because ah you can almost watch me grow up through everything I've done from the little videos. It's it's funny looking back. But yeah, it started when I was about, I would say all started as about seven, eight.

A Passion for Manchester City

00:01:38
Braydon Bent
And then from there, just been so lucky for it all to carry on.
00:01:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And of course you're a massive Manchester City fan, which is why you're you're on the podcast and you're very heavily featured in the All or Nothing documentary.
00:01:44
Braydon Bent
home
00:01:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
But is it right that you were also the first City fan to ever meet Pep Guardiola?
00:01:54
Braydon Bent
It is right. Yeah, I mean that's not a bad thing to be able to say, is it? Yeah, brilliant. ah um And that's, well, I think definitely it's up there with one of the best days of my life, the pep taxi video. ah Yeah, I was the first person to speak and meet a Pep Guardiola on his first day in Manchester and his first day as City's boss. How our amazing is that?
00:02:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's it's It's pretty amazing, and we were saying just before we hit record, you know, I'd seen you in the All or Nothing documentary, manti united Manchester City, sorry, it started there kind of rise to ascendancy, um but it's like you were some sort of good luck homing. What is it you said to Pep in that taxi?
00:02:32
Braydon Bent
so in the taxi as well just just to quickly go back i didn't know pep was going to be in there so i was told that i was getting in the taxi with les chapman who um work with City at the time. He was the kit man and did stuff for the TV and I've met him before. And he was going to be taking me around Manchester to like the old stadium and where it used to be, which is now houses and like the the football museum. And when I got in the taxi, Pep Guardiola was in there and I couldn't believe it.
00:03:01
Braydon Bent
And we had we had a chat, obviously, and they said, well, they said, if it all doesn't go to plant, then we just won't put it out. ah But if it goes well, then it it goes well. So don't worry about it. And we did it. And it was brilliant. Fortunately for me, looking back, it's where it all started. And in the taxi, I said to Pat, we're going to win it all. And I tell you what, it wasn't a bad prediction, was it? It was unbelievable.
00:03:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Not a bad prediction at all. So for anybody who's just listening and not watching this, Braden has got framed behind him a European Cup and a Premier League trophy as well that he's picked up on his travels from from celebrating with City. Yeah, good prediction. I mean, what a rise and obviously like you've been a City fan all your life. How did you become a City fan, you know, before these big days of winning everything?
00:03:51
Braydon Bent
I don't think I had much of a choice to be honest with you. I think, well, I reckon if you cut me, I've always said, I think I bleed blue. and my My family have always been City fans. My dad is a massive City fan. Had season and ticket for years. He's been to Sea City all over the world. ah Went to Main Road, so big, big City family. And then his dad was also a City fan, was ah one of the famous cup finals where Burt Trautman broke his neck. and So we've ah we've always been a big City family. so I came into this world and didn't have much of a choice.

Thoughts on Manchester City's Future

00:04:23
Braydon Bent
I'll tell you what, I've been born in some good days.
00:04:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah yeah Yeah, you really have. you really have Like I say, the dominance of Pep and City has been absolutely it incredible and the the style of football has been incredible. But current form, current kind of you know four four losses on the bounce, what are your thoughts about kind of title chances this season?
00:04:47
Braydon Bent
Well, I think the the the levels that I've been lucky enough to see City player has been unbelievable for the past, what, eight seasons, seven seasons he's but he's been in charge of us. And you can't complain when he's winning, you know, four Premier Leagues back to back. And I think, of course, at some point, the football does drop off. But I think this might be just a blip. I think we need to find out whether a Pep staying or not, because that's, of course, not 100 percent confirmed yet. And I think that has a big impact on how the players play.
00:05:15
Braydon Bent
We are missing lots you know due to injury, but you can't say that because you just get get told off to say that as a city fan. and But look, yeah, we've we've not been playing amazing football recently, especially the Champions League game against Sporting. I mean, the first half we were we were all alright, and I think, you know, second half we just collapsed. But we just got to carry on going, in come back after the international break. We've got a couple of tough fixtures coming up just a bit, Tottenham and um home in Liverpool. and And then I suppose where we see we are after that, see where we are after them. But it is, it's not great at the moment. However, we're sitting, and of course, we fight till the end.
00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, the fight will continue. Do you reckon there will be a Premier League trophy at the end of it?
00:05:55
Braydon Bent
I think it's going to be tough, of course. I think Arsenal were going to be our, well, going into the season, I thought Arsenal would be the top team competing with City. They seem to have had a worse start than it was actually. So ah I think Liverpool are going to be strong till the end. That's going to go down to the wire. But of course, as a City fan, from the days I've seen, you know, when we beat Aston Villa on the last day and of course the Aguero moment, you can never rule us out at the moment. And with Pep in charge, I think you can't you can't rule it out yet.
00:06:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And I've, I've been very vocal on this podcast about, you know, you can't write Manchester City off. Um, and it's almost as if like underneath my Liverpool shirt, there's a city shirt and there really isn't.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just think you can never write them off because, you know, in so consistent, so wonderful to watch as well. Um, going back to the sporting game, I know it's hard loss, but it was kind of like people were looking at it as like the Manchester Derby preview with Amarin kind of in, in charge of, of sporting.
00:06:52
Braydon Bent
and mean and I don't know about that. I think You can't do what I mean. I know I know what some people think. I mean and read it, but I'm not sure about that. Of course, he's you know had his first training session. I think it was today or the other day. And he's going to change it at United and he's going to bring something new, which is what it needs.
00:07:12
Braydon Bent
But you can't you know base him off the the sporting game because it just doesn't work like that. He's different players. It's a different mindset, especially at United. We know what they've been like for the past few years. And I suppose only we'll we'll see him in the Derby. But he's got a job to do, especially at United with the players they've got and where they are at the moment. So I think it'll be completely different. you know You never know, I suppose. But I don't think, hopefully, the result will be the same as that.
00:07:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i have to I have to agree. In fact, Tomu also hosts on this podcast. We were talking about kind of the end of the day, regardless of what system he likes to play and and how he likes to play, he is going to inherit the squad as it is.
00:07:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So there'll be a lot of work to do there.
00:07:52
Braydon Bent
It's up there.
00:07:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um In a moment, we're going to talk a bit about international football ah because we've just come back from from the break. What's now at this point in the season is a good season for Manchester City fan.
00:08:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
What are you looking for come May?
00:08:09
Braydon Bent
I think, of course, improved form. I think it's what we need at the moment. I'd like to know whether Pep's staying or not, because I think that does have a big impact. And of course, the City fans, we want him to stay forever. But with how the players are playing, I think knowing if Pep's staying or leaving and, you know, just can't make his mind up at the moment. I think it's super important. So I'd like to know his decision on that. Of course, I'm hoping he's staying. Improving form and hopefully top of the table. I don't think we need to sign any players depending on, you know, if we get our injuries back. I think maybe a defensive midfielder to cover for Rodry, even when he comes back, like ah almost a Calvin Phillips kind of role. But I think this the squad is strong and we just need to start winning games.
00:08:53
Global Sports Podcast Network

Global Sports Podcast Network
And of course, we have had that that break, probably a man's city's favour. ah England were in action um and lovely, you know, great couple of games over the weekend. um And we will talk about the games.

World Cup Adventures

00:09:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
The reason why we talk about international football is because amongst your many presenting credits, you actually presented at the World Cup in Qatar.
00:09:43
Braydon Bent
Yeah, that was that was honestly that was brilliant over there. I got the opportunity to watch one of the games as well, but it was a brilliant experience being out there and I got to meet some of the players, and some of the old players, not the England players.
00:09:56
Braydon Bent
but in our hotel actually, because in Qatar, this is quite funny actually, like um in Qatar, everything was dead close to each other. So um in our hotel, it was almost split in half and we were sharing with the Costa Rica team. So you could walk literally around the center and you'd see all the team hotels. And when when we were going down to breakfast, I remember Kayla Navas was at one of the tables on the other side of the room. And that was quite a funny story I remember. But yeah, I got to do some,
00:10:27
Braydon Bent
Superb stuff in Qatar on the stage in the Saudi fan zone was was one of my favorites as well. and But that was that was a great experience, I have to say.
00:10:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll bet, I'll bet. I mean, not not fantastic for us. We did okay in that tournament. I think, you know, at the end of the day, ah I think where we finished was fair, considering the quality of the other teams around. So what how comes you ended up going out there? What brought you out to to Qatar? Who are you with?
00:10:50
Braydon Bent
ah So I'm with ah what was with football for Pito, I'm lucky enough to be an ambassador for And we were working out there and and we were talking about hydration and rehydrating the earth was was one of our main talking points. And I think it's it's key because so the the reach well the reach that first of all the reach that football can have is unbelievable. I mean, it's ah it's a sport that's massive and and is still growing. And there's so many issues that I think football can you know unite people together with.
00:11:19
Braydon Bent
id talk about i did ah I did a TED talk on kind of a similar similar thing. um and And it's all about how football can really bring people together. So we was out there with the charity trying to raise a bit of awareness, but also putting a bit of a spin on it and and bringing football into the equation.
00:11:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's amazing. and And for anybody who hasn't yet, definitely check out that TED Talk that Braden's talking about. It's football bridging cultures. um For those who haven't watched it yet, can you elaborate on kind of what the topic of conversation is during that talk?

Football's Unifying Power

00:11:52
Braydon Bent
So of course I think we've established, I'm i'm a big football fan um and thanks for telling everybody to go and watch it, I'd be much appreciated. and But it's about, I think we all know how big football is and how so many people across the world love it, but often it is painted in a negative light and it's seen as divisive, we see in the news there's always people fighting, it's almost seen as kind of a tribal sport maybe, tribal undertones, but it could do so much more And just to briefly top line it in the tent, so I could talk about my personal experiences. I had one in a Brazilian favela and in a refugee camp in Syria, and it was football that brought us together. So I talked about my own personal experiences, but also how it can be used for so much more than what it is already. I think it's evident that sometimes it's a bit of a, it's for money, isn't it? You can see it's a money-making game, but with the reach it has, it could do so much more if we just work together. And I think, well,
00:12:47
Braydon Bent
especially as a football fan, I can see the potential it has.
00:12:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and it's it's a really important message and in the talk. And as I said, do do check it out. It's well worth a watch. um And in terms of kind of what clubs and and teams can do, um because it's such a what a wide conversation topic, you know football, as you said, is it's everywhere. And it's it's almost like a religion pretty much in every country in the world except the US. s um What would be kind of, if you were to say as an ambassador for for football for peace, what is the the kind of goal you talked about the hydration stuff in in Qatar? What would you like to see clubs doing more of?
00:13:24
Braydon Bent
I think it's a matter of you know clubs, organisations and players. I think it is a game that makes those at the very top very rich and kind of everything underneath doesn't really get thought about. I mean not going into specifics but I think there needs to be more initiatives where you get the top clubs players working together because one of my points in the TED talk is If you put a big football club badge or a big footballer's name on the front of an initiative, people are interested and people are listening. They want to hear you know what they've got to say. I think the impact that purely just branding an initiative as you know a football club has is actually huge and people don't realise it. I think it just needs more players, clubs, organisations working together and coming up with initiatives to use the power, really, because they're very powerful people in in this world, actually.
00:14:12
Braydon Bent
especially towards the did my generation and youngsters in particular. They listen to footballers, they're more likely to listen to a football club and I think it's so important that if they got their message across it would actually set up future generations.
00:14:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and it's a really important point again about, you know, future

Football in the Social Media Age

00:14:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
generations and stuff. We've had a few conversations on on this show about kind of how the next generation consumes football and obviously you go to to City a lot and and visit a lot and and go and watch football. What's, you know, you're 15 years old, you're secondary school. What is football consumption like amongst your peers?
00:14:51
Braydon Bent
I think for me I've been extremely lucky because my dad's had a season ticket and I've been brought up always there at the football. I think a lot through social media, ah definitely on on TikTok, through podcasts, Instagram and and all, and you know, them kind of platforms, everything you say, the edits of the footballers, to the football news, It's all done through that and and people are influenced on whether they like a player or not, definitely through social media. And of course, whenever people can watch the games, I tend to think they do. and But I've been super lucky being able to consume all my football knowledge through listening to people like yourself, ah hearing out your opinions and and being at the games. oh There's nothing that I love more in this world than being at the football.
00:15:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh yeah, it's a very, very special experience. um So before we carry on, I think it's time for ah one more ad. 00:16:24
Braydon Bent
two
00:16:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And and ah I agree, yeah I love, I go up to Anfield to watch Liverpool as often as I can. um I go up to, all over the country really to watch England wherever I can as well. I've been really fortunate to see um you know some fantastic ah players and some fantastic games.
00:16:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I have a great record actually. I'm going to jinx it saying this live now.
00:16:46
Braydon Bent
One.
00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I have never seen Liverpool lose Anfield.
00:16:49
Braydon Bent
Oh, are you there for the city game?
00:16:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not, I'm not, unless anyone can sort that out for me.
00:16:54
Braydon Bent
I wish I could do that, actually.
00:16:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But as well as watching football and talking about football and and being ambassador football piece, you're also a football player. um In fact, um I think i'm I'm holding you up a little bit from football training today.

Braden on the Field

00:17:08
Braydon Bent
um oh I I am.
00:17:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Is it right that you're captain of one of your teams as well?
00:17:12
Braydon Bent
I am. I'm captain. I play for two teams. They both live, so local to me. And for the Saturday team, I am the captain at the moment.
00:17:22
Braydon Bent
but Yeah, you never but know, do you?
00:17:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, and what positions do you play?
00:17:25
Braydon Bent
Centre midfield and I'm more of an attacking midfielder. I like to think I'm like Kevin De Bruyne, if I have to say so myself. and Maybe like just the version of Wish or or the BTEC version. and But yeah, I play almost the cam kind of role in my team.
00:17:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very nice, very nice. i was I was very much a defender in my youth, and I don't think that was because I was a particularly good defender.
00:17:47
Braydon Bent
yeah
00:17:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it was that classic thing of like, well, if they're no good at football, or stick them in defense.
00:17:55
Braydon Bent
stick the vi I don't know about that. ah keep Like a a Van Dyke? No? Get your head on in.
00:18:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, ah um that nowadays, I would say a Van Dyke, by a show my age now, I always used to kind of look up to the likes of Tony Adams and Martin Keogh, and that's my generation of defender.
00:18:06
Braydon Bent
Oh yeah, what I mean before my time, isn't it? that I know and know the things, of course.
00:18:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, work well, well, well, unfortunately, well, before your time, I'm finding as the longer we do this podcast, the more I'm finding managers of Premier League teams who are younger than me.
00:18:27
Braydon Bent
and know I mean, the age is is is he young now. I mean, how old's that Brighton manager? He's got to be the youngest in the Premier League, surely.
00:18:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think he's 37.
00:18:36
Braydon Bent
that is that is reckon sorely Surely one of the players has got to be near near his age.
00:18:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah, for sure. For sure.
00:18:42
Braydon Bent
go i
00:18:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And actually Lee Carsley was saying um he'd like to see more English managers coming into the Premier League kind of being an option for for the England team.
00:18:48
Braydon Bent
oh
00:18:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I actually am really happy with Tuchel as an appointment for the England manager job. I think he's a really good choice.
00:18:58
Braydon Bent
Mm-hmm.
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
um We didn't really get onto the subject. Obviously two good wins over over the the last week. um Not much to say about the wins, good performances, great to see young players getting their chance.
00:19:05
Braydon Bent
Yeah. Put my fullness in there.
00:19:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think about Tuchel as a New England boss?
00:19:13
Braydon Bent
Yeah, I mean, I suppose time will tell. we know we We know he wins. He's done well where he's been usually. And look who else is out there. I suppose you either wait or you get the man you want. And it looked like England wanted to go quite quickly. ah So I suppose we'll only see how we we see how it goes. And I think we're the players. I really enjoyed actually watching the game the other day because it was the younger ones that got the chance and kind of changed it up. And Gareth Southgate, don't get me wrong, he did I think he did very well in charge of England.
00:19:43
Braydon Bent
But at times, I think the football, I prefer to watch a bit differently and ah more maybe well to kill defense, but and maybe more open system where we see some of them young players be able to thrive. I mean, even coming from a city fan, Curtis Jones, it's been on for me. He we was looked very good. And it'd be good to see more of them. You're allowed to get in the team. Ollie Watkins up front. I think Kane is, of course, our main man. But he's he's equally as good at the moment, banging in the goals for Villa usually. And I look You can't complain, two wins in in the Nations League, ah but the big games will be will be coming up soon.
00:20:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah and and I agree it's really lovely to see that the young players not just getting a chance but really grabbing that chance and Curtis Jones, Ollie Watkins, Ante Gordon as well really putting in some some great performances and showing that they're not just there to kind of say oh I've i've got a cap that they want to compete and want to be in that that kind of starting level they want to be in that squad.
00:20:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
and You talked about Rodgering unfortunately injured till the rest of the season
00:20:45
Braydon Bent
Oh, thanks, right. That was a lot. Oh, and a good evening.
00:20:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:20:49
Braydon Bent
Thank you so much.
00:20:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Fantastic special player and and because he's been our way it kind of makes this a bit more of a better question. So far Premier League season you know we're getting to the business end Christmas coming up which players or player has really stood out to you from any club?

Season's Standout Players

00:21:07
Braydon Bent
For City over the few over the last few seasons, Rodry, of course, as you say, the from watching City play week in, week out, he makes such a big difference for us. He makes the team tick. For City, I'd say Rodry, this season, you can't really say it. For City this season, I think Rico Lewis has played very well, actually. I'm a big fan of Rico Lewis. In terms of the Premier League, I think Luis Diaz at Liverpool, I always see him and I think he'd be good at City.
00:21:35
Braydon Bent
and
00:21:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hands off.
00:21:37
Braydon Bent
I think he's finkey's a world-class player um and Semenyo from Bournemouth has had a good start to the season actually. I think when I watched Bournemouth he plays well. So there's a few players from from smaller clubs and Chris Wood, one that you wouldn't think, Chris Wood he's been super impressive so far. I think he's just behind Harlan now.
00:22:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.

I mean, that that if that was on your bingo card coming into the Premier League season, well done. But that is something I did not expect. Chris, what are the goals?
00:22:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
No. So, so I'm so pleased about that. We talked about this a lot on the pub. We had a kind of a whole episode where we basically like, is this the return of the, the out and I out kind of old school striker.

And of course City have got their own kind of out and out old school striker. What a difference Harland has made. who

Braydon Bent
Yeah, he's he's brilliant. And last season, especially in when we won the treble, actually, he was immense. I think he does miss it sometimes. And when when you don't have De Bruyne, he makes a big difference in that team, especially to Holland.
00:22:47

And sometimes people make the argument of he's not really a footballer, is he? He stands up front and puts the goals in, and but that's his job. ah You give him one chance and he'll score, sometimes not even a chance. um And yeah, he's been brilliant. Imagine him and Aguero. Imagine that as as ah as a front too.

Gosh, I was going to say actually, I'm very jealous of, that is probably one of the most iconic Premier League moments ever, that Aguero moment. It still gives me chills. I'm not even a City fan. Just watching that back, yes you cannot make it up.

um And I talk to people who aren't football fans and I talk about it forever. You've got to imagine, set the scene, all the things.

unreal. um I wasn't in the stadium for that game. I think I was only five, so I missed out on that day. My dad was there, and but I think the closest I got to that feeling was Aston Villa when we won 3-2.
00:23:44
Braydon Bent
The feeling in the stadium was the same, Sunil down, Coutinho scored as well, which was which was great. Then coming into the second half, he came out and he scored them goals, Gundogan, he's on the back of the shirt right now. and Wow, that that was the closest feeling I've ever had to that, especially as a city fan in the stadium, but two good days to remember that.

Yeah and um I mean for yourself I hope they do continue for the rest of us. I hope they finally stop and we we see the end of City's dominance and City's reign. One final file thing before you wrap up. We talked about kind of young players coming in and coming up and your incredible CV at only 15 years old. Gary Lineker is leaving Match of the Day.
