Premier League Week Overview

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily English Premier League Podcast brought to you by GSPN. My name is Joptage and today I'm joined by Louis. How we doing Louis?
00:00:18
Louie Easton
I'm all good, how are you doing, mate?
00:00:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, good. It's been a busy week of Premier League action after the international break. And I think the main starting point has to be Saturday's game between Manchester City and Tottenham.

Tottenham's Triumph Over Manchester City

00:00:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
It ended 4-0 to Tottenham. Now, Louis, we know that Tottenham have something of a ah curse whenever they whenever they play City, they seem to beat them. I guess it's more of a curse for City.
00:00:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm so maybe the result isn't that surprising but for nail the score line certainly is surprising and.
00:00:51
Louie Easton
I think it's always a surprise whenever Man City get beaten. I know they've gone on a five-match losing streak in all competitions, but to lose again, even even without Rodgeri and De Bruyne are not starting, it's still a huge surprise, and by four goals as well. um you can't I understand Spurs have got this sort of voodoo on them, um and they even beat them in the League Cup earlier this season, but You know, City were awful, especially in defence. You know, you can't just pin this on Rodri and De Bruyne. There are so many things to consider. You know, Man City's back line, it's it's a weird one as well because they've sort of got a weird three at the back formation going on, Guardio.
00:01:38
Louie Easton
um had a pretty awful game, he kind of gave away the pass that set up Madison's second goal. um But City were just not defending in one-on-one situations, they weren't tracking the runs, and they were punished for that. And, you know, they only have themselves to blame. They can't blame the injuries. It's it it's happened too often. And, you know, I think they should be quite disappointed with themselves.
00:02:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, I think you're right about injuries is not really an excuse given what they were still able

Manchester City's Struggles Analyzed

00:02:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
to put out. A lot of people have been critical of the squad building and the stage that it's at. They've got quite an aging squad, in particular, you know, Kyle Walker, who was really poor in the game and seems to have lost his legs and his physicality. And at the other end of the spectrum, you've then got Rika Lewis,
00:02:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
who is a very good young player but because he because he's been forced to play so often he's not really getting the time to then have his rest and develop he's just getting thrown in at the deep end so he's also struggling I mean Pep Guardiola's just signed his new contract do you think he's let it get to a stage where the squad is not in a great position
00:02:52
Louie Easton
um Well, I think they lack with depth a bit, and I do think that the age factor in some of their players does have an effect on the rest of the squad. so Obviously losing Roger and De Bruyne is definitely something that does have a factor. ah But, you know, Kyle Walker, I don't really think it's the age and physicality that's his problem. I think he's just been making awful decisions. and not been defending at his best.
00:03:21
Louie Easton
I think he has been taking a lot of the criticism recently ah from Manchester City fans and also their entire summer was sort of strange because re-signing Gunduan, you know, he's the one whose legs are gone and
00:03:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:03:38
Louie Easton
Now you're playing him in a midfield without stability and a midfield that hasn't been running as much as the opposition and Spurs, you know, they're a team that run a lot and they ran more than City and they
00:03:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's it.
00:03:53
Louie Easton
completely annihilated them in the midfield battles and at the top as well and you know that's definitely um something that man city really need to take from this game you know they need to run more and they need to be more prepared they need to be more organized at the back and they need to stop making all of these sloppy passes out of the back as well. I understand Pep Guardiola's invented the whole passing out of the back risks-taking thing that's kind of ruining a lot of non-league football nowadays, but, you know, these players are getting pressed and the formation's all wrong, and they need to have a look at themselves.
00:04:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, you just touched on Gundogan, which I think is a good point because it felt like in the summer when they signed him back from Barcelona, it did feel like a bit of a sentimental signing, something that wasn't completely logical, didn't really fit into where the squad was going. Obviously, looking back, that now looks like a mistake, but do you think that That's sort of a sign that maybe you know in the summer and into this season Guardiola and the board maybe have sort of let their foot off the gas and made some decisions that they wouldn't normally make.
00:05:08
Louie Easton
Well, it's all good saying this when their two best players haven't been fit. um But they really needs a they need to invest in more squad depth. You know, they've got an incredible, incredible academy.
00:05:24
Louie Easton
and they've loaned out a lot of players and you know that side of things youth development is incredible but they didn't really reinforce their midfield depth you know they got rid of Calvin Phillips they sent him off to Ipswich and they didn't really replace him you know Kovacic has been playing in that sort of defensive midfield role that's out of position for him and Rico Lewis as well covering You know, these are good players going forward, but when it comes to tackling and when it comes to sort of owning that space in between the midfield and defensive lines, they're not the man for that. And, you know, they've really let that sort of um part of their squad really go out of the window.

Spotlight on Tottenham's Key Players

00:06:05
Louie Easton
um But, you know, as for Spurs, they were incredible. I have to say, you know, Madison and Kuleshevsky completely tore them apart. Even Hyung Min Son, unlucky not to score that sort of long distance range shots that was aiming for the top corner. And another Spurs player I'd like to touch on as well was Ben Davis. I really think he was the unsung hero. You know, he he did everything right from defense, you know, the passing out from the back and winning all of those jewels. I think he was terrific.
00:06:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Definitely, and good that you've touched on Spurs because they've sort of been the inconsistent side of this season. You never know what you're going to get with them. You know, they've beat City twice now in the past sort of three or four weeks, and they've lost to teams like Ipswich, collapsed against Brighton. I mean, do you think that throughout the season they will be consistent enough to challenge for top four, or do you think it will be a step too far for them?
00:07:02
Louie Easton
I don't think they'll get top four. I'll say that now. I don't think they've shown the consistency. um You know, they need to be winning games about against these sort of lower downsides. And, you know, the way they set up today was incredible, but they just... lack that sort of rhythm ah through the season. And, you know, it would be nice if they could maybe get something from the Carabao Cup, but as for the league, I don't think they're going to get any ah Champions League football next season. I think the competition with Chelsea and ah teams in that sort of position are a bit too tough. I think Chelsea will probably be the team that makes the fourth spot this season. I think they've been brilliant recently.
00:07:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I hope you're right and that leads us nicely onto the Chelsea

Leicester City Managerial Change

00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
game. Chelsea beating Leicester 2-1 and the big news following that game is that Leicester have sacked Steve Cooper. Now, I'll get your opinion on that first. Personally, I've seen a lot of Leicester fans who've been unhappy with him since he's come in and a lot of fans who've celebrated him leaving, which, you know, I think a good place to look at is always how the fans feel.
00:08:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they're all happy that he's gone. What are your thoughts? Because it's only been, you know, 11 games, 12 games. Do you think it was too soon or do you think it was the correct decision?
00:08:21
Louie Easton
I think it's harsh because you know Lester coming up this season they were always going to struggle um and the transfer window wasn't I mean it was an interesting one but the fact they're still playing 37 year old Jamie Vardy and asking him to do absolutely everything against Chelsea I think that is a Cooper decision. And I think the way Leicester played against Chelsea, yes, I know it's Chelsea, but they didn't even try. They just sort of sat back and sort of ah tried to wade the entire match out and it didn't work. And the way that they were playing their football was really stupid.
00:09:00
Louie Easton
um But i I do think if they get in David Moyes now, it will be a very boring watch for the rest of the season because a lot of West Ham fans despised having Moyes in their squad, even despite the fact that they won the conference league under him. But, you know, the only way is up for Leicester, I think, and it's it seems like the right decision for now, but I don't think a lot is going to change if David Moyes does come in.
00:09:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, well, Leicester sitting in 16th place, just one point out of the drop zone, so we'll see how they get on. But for now, Louis, could you please tell us a little bit about Zencaster?

Thank you for that. Now moving on to the other game involving title challenges on Saturday, Arsenal 3-0.

Arsenal's Dominant Win

00:10:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now I was at this game and I was expecting a bit more of a challenge from Forest and given the team that Arsenal put out, I thought that you know maybe Arteta had an eye on the Champions League game against Sporting Lisbon midweek. I was a bit surprised, as were a lot of Arsenal fans, by the team that he put out.
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, I mean, it was one of the most comfortable wins that I've seen for Arsenal this season. They were absolutely brilliant. Nottingham Forest barely put five passes together the whole game and were completely outplayed. Saka getting it on the score sheet, Parthi, even Ethan Weneri. He only came on for about 10-15 minutes, but he was absolutely brilliant every time he got the ball. His first ah involvement in the game was, you know, taking a great touch, dribbling past two players and and getting a shot off.
00:11:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
and he also ended up with a goal, so a perfect day for Arsenal. And, Louis, given their inconsistent form of late, before this game they'd won two out of their last seven in all competitions, how needed was that win for Arsenal?
00:11:19
Louie Easton
I think it's very necessary for the rest of their season and having Erdogan back to full fitness. We saw the difference today. He was the absolute catalyst in their attack. He was phenomenal. You know, his hold up play, ah the sort of plays where he would draw defenders in and then pass it out to a player in space and the runs that he would make into the box.
00:11:43
Louie Easton
to create space for other players to run into. It was just incredible. You know, we saw how much they missed them and I'm on the Liverpool podcast as well. The other guys on the Liverpool podcast were all getting a little bit cocky when an Arsenal were starting to drop points and they were saying they wouldn't really challenge us for the rest of the season. I disagreed um because I knew once Erdogan came back I knew that they would be back to their winning ways. And Leandro Trossard, as great a player as he was, he has been struggling recently. Even ah against Forrest, I think he did struggle a little bit. But having Erdegard back in that position,
00:12:18
Louie Easton
and picking up the ball in those threatening areas in the final third, we just saw how much of a class above the rest of the players he was. And, you know, uh, Forrest weren't awful. You know, I thought Olaena made a great run down the right wing to set up a chance, which could have been scored by Hudson Adoy. Um, and Dominguez, I just think needs to calm down, you know, giving that foul away on the edge of the box when that goal was disallowed.
00:12:45
Louie Easton
I thought, you know, he's been too rash recently in, uh, into tackles. It's that sort of Argentine aggression that he loves playing with that sort of street, uh, wise, uh, football that he plays, but he just does need to calm down, but Arsenal an absolute masterclass, uh, passing the ball around the box and forcing Matt cells to make some good saves as well.
00:13:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah I mean Dominguez and Moreno really struggled to contain Saka an early god whose link up throughout was brilliant. I mean I think the main question that arises after the game is Arsenal are now nine points behind Liverpool. I mean we're only 12 games in so there's a long long way to go but nine points is a is also a long distance. Do you think that your side, Liverpool, can get caught by Arsenal? I mean, City's a different matter because they've done it before, but Arsenal have fallen at that last hurdle in the past two seasons and they've never been nine points behind. So are you still worried about them or not so much?
00:13:54
Louie Easton
To give you the blunt answer, yes. You know, we're only in November and it's a long, long way to go.
00:13:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:02
Louie Easton
I can't remember. Is that game week 12 we just had? So we've got 38 game weeks.
00:14:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:08
Louie Easton
That's 12 of 38. Absolutely. They can still catch us and they are an incredible, incredible team. You know, they've just got their most important player in their attacks back and You know, Liverpool have got a lot of matches this season. I know Arsenal do as well, but, you know, Liverpool still in the League Cup searching for that. And Liverpool are a team that will compete for absolutely every trophy. And yes, absolutely, there can be slip ups. You know, we haven't got a massive squad ourselves. We haven't got much reinforcements.
00:14:43
Louie Easton
A couple of players in our midfield get injured. um We could do with another holding midfielder and we'll see if we get anyone in January. I doubt we will, but I just think Arsenal are or team that always has to be taken seriously because of the run they went on at the end of last season when they were winning almost every week. eight and They can do that again. Absolutely they can.
00:15:05
Louie Easton
um And it's fair to say that you can be more worried about Man City but because we've seen them do it before. And once Roger comes back, they're just not going to stop winning. And Arsenal don't have the same sort of experience as Manchester City and Liverpool players do have, but they have that hunger and that desire and they play with so much flair and passion. And I do think that they, it will go down to the wire.
00:15:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, and we'll come on to Liverpool now, the first Sunday game, beating Southampton 3-2. Obviously, you are a Liverpool fan.
00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tell us your thoughts on the game.

Liverpool's Victory Highlights

00:15:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Salah on the score sheet twice. How'd it go down?
00:15:49
Louie Easton
I mean, Salah is, in my opinion, one of the best players in the world, if not the best player in the world right now. And that's, i will go I will go on a limb and say he probably is the best in the world because he, let's face it, he's the best player in the league so far this season.
00:15:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really?
00:16:01
Louie Easton
You know, he's played 12 games for us and he has got 10 goals and six assists.
00:16:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:11
Louie Easton
So the output that he has, and you know, Liverpool were not very good, especially in the first half, they were just sloppy.
00:16:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Raising number.
00:16:20
Louie Easton
Our goal came from a mistake in their defence, so I capitalised very well on that. And then we gave away a couple of poor, poor goals, you know, Robertson fouling right in on the edge of the box and giving away a penalty.
00:16:33
Louie Easton
didn't get anywhere near the ball and he didn't have a very good game today and ah our defense in in in its entirety were just well off it today and um you know keller saved the penalty but then the rebound went in unlucky But in the second half, we didn't start it well. But once we got into it, it was all Salah. He caused so many problems. And once Luis Diaz came on for Gackpo, who didn't have a great match, shirt Diaz made a huge difference as well. Nunez didn't really get ah into the game very much. They seem to have a massive, you know, they play three defend center backs, Southampton. So they seem to contain him quite well.
00:17:14
Louie Easton
But you know, that Salah goal, it was unbelievable. and The control that he has, you know, the ball coming, looming 30 feet over the top of everyone, and then he scores on his first touch.
00:17:30
Louie Easton
this i i don't You don't see many players like Mo Salah just the control and the confidence that he has and then to score a penalty ah after that with so much confidence. I run out of words to describe him.
00:17:46
Louie Easton
And I do genuinely think, you know, we're the best team in Europe in the Champions League. You know, we've won all our matches there. And we're top of the Premier League by some distance.
00:17:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:53
Louie Easton
And a lot of that is to do with Mohamed Salah and the impact, the leadership that he has on this team. I just don't think there's anyone in the world as good as him right now.
00:18:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, it's a bold shout, but I think it's probably fair when you when you look at his numbers, you look across the leagues, you know, Erling Haaland maybe could have put up a shout five, six weeks ago, but he's sort of fallen off a cliff as much as the city have.
00:18:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:18:21
Louie Easton
and all And his team play isn't nearly as good as Salah's either.
00:18:23
Louie Easton
You know, Harland, respectfully, his job is to score goals, and he does incredibly well at that, but he doesn't actually ah have that sort of tracking back and doing all the dirty work. Salah does that.
00:18:34
Louie Easton
He runs back. and When they scored on the counterattack, when no one was defending, Salah was back at centre back.
00:18:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:41
Louie Easton
is You know, you would never see half of the players ah that are in within a shout of the best player in the world do that sort of thing. Salah is everywhere, and even in the 95th minute, he was sprinting at some of their players on the ball.
00:18:57
Louie Easton
This man does not stop, and we saw the physicality he has when he took off his shirt to celebrate his second goal.
00:19:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:19:04
Louie Easton
And he kept on going for the hat trick as well. know There's not many people who have that sort of um that resilience and that passion for the game, and he's making FSG look absolutely ridiculous every single week for not offering him a new contract yet.
00:19:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
desire.
00:19:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah completely.
00:19:18
Louie Easton
I know he's 32, but he just has the same passion for the game.
00:19:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I completely agree. That's got to be a priority. We will come on to the United game, but before that, let me tell you about the Global Sports Podcast Network. Manchester United's New Management Challenges

00:20:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ipswich. It finished one all, and it couldn't have got off to a better start. Marcus Rashford scored in the second minute. It was a lovely goal from back to front, starting with the goalkeeper,
00:20:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
played it to Diallo who, you know, got past two, three players, whipped in a beautiful ball that Marcus Rashford got on the end off. That was in the second minute. And, you know, it was it was basically the perfect goal that you'd want from Amorim's sort a three of three at the back system. And I think probably in in that time, everyone thought, wow, he's he's already got his ideas across, you know, he's he's going to hit the ground running, so on, so on.
00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, Amari Hutchinson scored in the 43rd minute, also a brilliant solo effort, and it finished one all. the The game itself was quite a tough watch, you know, it seemed like both teams gave up as soon as the second half started, couldn't really get the better of each other. And I think that Amurim, after the game, will be thinking that he's got a lot of work to do because While he was doing an interview with Sky after the game and he and he said he sort of reiterated a couple of times, this will take a lot of time. He said that the players the issue isn't his three at the back system because you know these are top level players. they've They're all used to playing different formations throughout their careers. The problem is that they're struggling at the minute with you know enforcing his ideas.
00:21:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
and getting rid of 10 hogs ideas that they already have in his mind and they don't really have the confidence to believe some of them he said aren't making the correct decisions which you can't legislate for because they are Premier League players he said that so obviously he was a bit frustrated after the game I mean we all know that this is going to take time for him to to settle in and bed in his ideas to the players How long do you think it'll take before we see some sort of style that he wants and and that the players can can take on board?
00:21:58
Louie Easton
To be honest, I think that happens over a summer and coming in halfway through the season with a struggling side is always hard, especially when the players are full less full of characters and they're paid thousands and thousands of pounds regardless.
00:22:14
Louie Easton
You know, I do think there is a bit of an attitude problem at Manchester United and I always think that there has been since ah since things started to go downhill ah years ago. I don't think Tenharg was the problem and I don't think that it was fair that he got the sack because, you know, he won the f FA Cup last season and that's the sort of club that Manchester United are now. They're not going to get near top four now.
00:22:35
Louie Easton
I think it's too little too late for that. But for him to influence a squad, that will take a lot of time. I don't think we'll see that until next season. There might be some sort of new manager bounce that everyone's been hoping for.
00:22:49
Louie Easton
ah You know, United were all right under Rude van Nistoroy, I thought. um And I think that he is a bit missed.
00:22:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:55
Louie Easton
but you know when you've got players who don't want to run for you and you know it's it obviously there is a boost getting Luke Shaw back from injury but both teams just looked so flat Manchester United trying to pass it out of the back and they couldn't even get out of their own half for a lot of the second half I found it unbearable to watch to be honest with you.
00:23:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:17
Louie Easton
um And I just, I think it will take time for them to start playing freely with expression, with more running.
00:23:25
Louie Easton
And I think the man of the match was Onana. He made some incredible, incredible saves. um But to answer your question, I don't think we'll see it until next season.
00:23:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
okay well i mean i'm sure united funds won't be happy to hear that i think one of the issues that tenhoggers has left united with is the squad i mean the squad is so messy and mismatched the profiles of the players are so different there's not really it's not set up for a style of play which is one of the problems under tenhogg there was no clear style of play you got two forwards in zirksi and hoyland who are both a bit slow you know, not really goal scorers. You know, at the back, you've got Johnny Evans, you know, aging. I think Ms. Rowey's brilliant, but, you know, Molassia as well. you've You've not seen him in months. Just an in midfield today, Casamiro and Erickson started, and neither of them next season will probably even be at the club. So I feel a bit for Amran because he's got a massive job on his hands, and the the squad the players in the squad are just not set up for what he wants to do.
00:24:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I probably agree with you. I think that we're not we'll not see the best of United until next season. But as for this season, I mean, you've just said that you think top four is out of reach for them now. I mean, the they are six points behind Arsenal who are currently in fourth. Do you really think that that is insurmountable or do you just think that it's the way that they're playing?
00:24:56
Louie Easton
I think it's yeah I think it's the way they're playing um and you know their performances against tough opponents and even ah today against Ipswich I know it's a new manager but the fact that Amareem can't get his tactics across to his team and he is a young manager shows that even he has to have a big learning curve you know you can't just get in a new manager and expect him to have an instant impact and ah the team will immediately start playing for him.
00:25:24
Louie Easton
These things do take time. And for that reason, I don't think they'll get top four, as well as the fact that there are just so many good teams in that sort of region. You know, you got Nottingham Forest pushing for their still and they don't have to play European football.
00:25:38
Louie Easton
You've got um Chelsea, who don't have European football either. ah And
00:25:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we do, but it's not the same caliber.
00:25:46
Louie Easton
Yeah, well, you know, kids football.
00:25:50
Louie Easton
No, well, ah well, tougher opponents for Chelsea in that will come later, I'm sure. But by that point, they'll have already played a lot of their harder fixtures, I would have thought.

Louie Easton
I don't know who Chelsea have got in the next few weeks, but the way...
00:26:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, in your, do you mean in your report in the Premier League?
00:26:10
Louie Easton
Well, in in the Premier League, I meant...

Chelsea's Upcoming Opportunities

00:26:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, I don't think we've got two difficult fixtures because we've already had quite a few of the tough ones earlier in the season. Let me just, uh, get up our fixture list here.
00:26:21
Louie Easton
ah But the thing is, Chelsea have been playing so well recently.
00:26:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got, yeah, I i mean, so look, we've got Heidenheim in the conference league, then Villa, then Southampton, then Astana, then Brentford.
00:26:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the fixture list is quite favorable for the next few weeks.
00:26:39
Louie Easton
So there you go. And I think with a the way that Chelsea are playing, I really do think that they can go out and chase the top four. um And especially with some of the quality that Chelsea have and the squad depth, you know, you look at Chelsea's bench in these Premier League matches, these are all starting players.
00:27:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:00
Louie Easton
And, you know, I really think Enzo Maresca, I doubted him when he came in from Leicester. I thought, well, Championship football I know they won the championship, but that's so different to winning the Premier League.
00:27:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:13
Louie Easton
He's done so well with this Chelsea squad that has been struggling so much in the previous managers. And I did think that when Pochettino was sacked, I thought that was incredibly unfair um because there's such a problem with the amount of quality and the amount of players that deserve to be playing.
00:27:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:29
Louie Easton
But he's done an an incredible job of finding ways to incorporate different players into his system and ah I think Chelsea things are going to really start looking up for you lot now
00:27:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean i hope you're right and just on on your point about the quality of our bench players you're completely right because someone like jell felix who's basically been used as a conference league player this whole season he started against lester and he was absolutely brilliant ah you know we've also got someone of the caliber and kunku who's constantly on the bench i think one i don't know if it'll be an issue i hope not but i think down the line right now the players know where they stand but you know in in three four five months will players like Felix and Nkunku still be happy to sit on the bench there's already been quite strong rumors from reputable reputable sources that Nkunku is going to leave in the summer if he's not a starter so i think at some point that may become an issue

But so for now, you know, we're riding this wave of positivity.
