Mikey
Hello and welcome to the Daily English Premier League podcast brought to you by GSPN. My name is Mikey and I'm joined today by Tom Jolly, no less. How are we Tom?
00:00:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I am absolutely knackered, finally got a week off this week, and finally time to catch up with everything that's been going on.
00:00:25
Mikey
And you've made the most of it. You've been up
Blackburn Rovers Experience
00:00:27
Mikey
and down the country following sports in all demographics.
00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, been down to Blackburn Rovers at the weekend, which was interesting. It was nice to see Ewood Park for the first time. Obviously, ex Premier League champions, Blackburn Rovers facing Sheffield United. Sheffield United had absolutely walked the park with the Rovers, but overall, a proper old school ground Ewood.
00:00:47
Mikey
Yeah, nice. A friend of our listeners who
Premier League Weekend Analysis
00:00:50
Mikey
are outside of this country and aren't very familiar with the English League, we're not going to bore you too much about anyone outside of the Premier League. Our focus is on Saturday and Sunday's fixtures. And we want to break it up into three parts. our Our first segment, I would like to talk to you, Tom, about the three games that very much caught the eye. It was the test of the title race, I would go as far to say. We had Newcastle against Arsenal, Bournemouth, Man City,
00:01:17
Mikey
and Liverpool Brighton. All those three teams were put to the test in very different ways and I'd like to talk a little bit about them and get your insight as to what you felt happened and how you think those teams fared. Let's start with
Arsenal's Struggles and Tactics
00:01:31
Mikey
Newcastle Arsenal. Going to the Geordie land, Newcastle have been a little inconsistent this year, ah haven't quite found the same stride as they found a couple of years ago when they managed to get Champions League football. Arsenal have done okay but our you know, indebted with injuries and throughout the team. And they stood a tough test at Newcastle and they they lost. um But after watching the game, Newcastle rode the luck, which I guess you have to do against these top teams. um But i think I feel like Arsenal lacked a killer instinct and a way to change or adapt to break down what Newcastle put in front of them.
00:02:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, we all said at the start of the season, didn't we? Well, before the start of the season, whether Havertz was going to be the main man for Arsenal going forward. And he kind of put that question to bed over the first few weeks of the season of the performances the German put in. But now I expect those questions to arise again, because he's had a bit of shaky form.
00:02:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then you look at Newcastle's squad. I think this is the first time I want to say five or six game weeks. that They've had Alexander Rizak and Anthony Gordon both start a game like simultaneously. Obviously they missed Isaac last week at Chelsea. So you look at Newcastle's 4-9 and go, they should create a chance to see four shots on target to Arsenal's one.
00:02:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Arsenal, of course, are going to dominate the ball. Saliba didn't have his best game after coming back with that back off after a suspension last week. So you look you look at Newcastle and go, yeah, they rode the look at times. But Arsenal, they should have probably had, ah they created more than enough shots to have at least somewhat at least got a point from the game. But at the same time, to have only one shot on target away at Newcastle, you're never going to come away with a result with that.
00:03:14
Mikey
Yeah, no i've got i've got yeah i think you I think you're right really. i think the the The trouble you've got for Arsenal is they' they've not bounced back. And they've they've had a few results where maybe they haven't they haven't come out as you would expect a title-winning team to do. um and And for me, historically, what great title-winning teams do is bounce back from those bad results. And you think a game like Newcastle would have been an opportunity to do that. I mean, they came close to to stealing a point through Declan Nice right at the end.
00:03:50
Mikey
um But it was all a little bit last ditch for me, and I thought ah thought Newcastle's goal, to be fair to them, was very, very good, ah very well taken by. It's like, I've got to ask, did you put him back in your fantasy team?
00:04:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
now ah No, yes I did have him the first couple weeks and then I brought Watkins in, got rid of Watkins in, there's no other man you can have in your FPL at the moment but Chris Wood, so we'll get on to that.
00:04:03
Mikey
ah Did you have him at the start? Yeah, I thought you did.
00:04:13
Mikey
Yeah, man, absolutely.
00:04:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
The New Zealand man's been unbelievable. I would just want to ask them as well. They've played, us i want i don't know this specific I know it's poor for me, but I don't know the specific stat on the very like the exact amount of teams they've played inside the top 7, 8, 9. But they've played a lot. They've played city ah home ah sorry City away from home. They've played Liverpool at home. They've already played a couple of the big boys in and around that, Newcastle included.
00:04:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
You look at their fixtures over the next few weeks and go, Arsenal should be picking up a lot more points now. You look at City and Liverpool, though. Liverpool in particular, they've got a really tough schedule coming up in between ah European Games and Manchester City as well, and the injuries that Manchester City have as well. So I think this, this even though this result didn't go Arsenal's way, still think theyre they're more than still in the title race. But at the same time as that, I still have questions over Michael Ateta.
00:05:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I really do. I think that, don't get me wrong, he took a team ah ah over a team that was in 8th place after, um obviously you had the Unai Emery spell, then you had Freddie Unberg and then they they brought in Arteta from Manchester City. And you look at that and go, Eric Tenharve has won more trophies at Manchester United in his 10-year-old Trafford compared to what Arteta has done um while he's been at the Emirates.
00:05:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
first I'll tell you, who is a superior coach to to the Dutchman, he's got to at least get a piece of silverware this year, hasn't he? Because there's so little very little pockets of the Arsenal fanbase that are starting to raise these questions.
00:05:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I just want to bring them to to to light a bit and say, if Arsenal fans are getting worried, is this the time to to be raising questions around them?
Bournemouth vs. Man City Upset
00:05:44
Mikey
possibly. I think it never surprises me just how fickle football fans are. Art Sutter was one of the best managers in the world at the start of the season and now they have a few turbulent games. He's now being questioned. I think that that is modern day Premier League football or football in general.
00:06:02
Mikey
um but it will remain to see how he goes on. He is very, own ah some rumblings coming out of Arsenal of of the things he tries with them, but something about lemons and and squeezing lemons and talking about, very philosophically about how all the juice that they have from a team comes together and that's what they use.
00:06:24
Mikey
It's just a little bit far fetched for me. and But let's move on quickly to the Vitality, which probably was my favorite game of the weekend. um And it was a proper football match, like a really good football match. City were off the pace for City standards, but Bournemouth were phenomenal. They could have been three up.
00:06:46
Mikey
um and then it got to the last 15 minutes and City did what City do really really well. They turned the screw and the game was, they could have quite easily come away with a point but you know they sent it back, at his name's gonna hit my head but they sent it back for Bournemouth, both of them were phenomenal but one of them stood out phenomenally.
00:07:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sarnassie is the name.
00:07:08
Mikey
Yeah that's him and I think you know to To end Pep Guardiola and Man City's undefeated 2024 run um is is quite a statement and
Liverpool's Comeback and Title Hopes
00:07:21
Mikey
the first time ever in Bournemouth history they have beaten Man City. um yeah what What again, football?
00:07:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kirk has massive final pause him left-footed left back what thing I think he's one of I think he's only one of what five teams this weekend that plays a Played a left-footed left back or it was a big lack of them across the weekend of there's this trend of having right foot it left back We'll send them back to the left back, but the Hungarian put in a massive shift I Smith should have put them 3-0 up though shouldn't he in the second half? He had a brilliant chance, but so menu again There was questions that after Slanky left, whether he was going to be able to leave the line. He's done it perfectly so far this season. They've been brilliant, deserved the three points. And City, as much as they were off it, Gavardo at the same time, got a goal back. And then as soon as he scores that, you think they they you they are going to do it, aren't they? But Bournemouth, again, as you mentioned about Newcastle, they rode the look at times, they got away with it, in pockets in there. But an overall brilliant performance from Andoni Iriola's side,
00:08:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
and just showing how good the Premier League is. in that ah Even for the top teams, they're so beatable this season.
00:08:27
Mikey
Yeah I think one of the big things out of these three matches we're talking about in particular was the attitude that these let's say middle table teams came out with which was very offensive high pressing football and and they didn't give the respect to the teams that were talking about Liverpool Arsenal City and that really shook those teams And I think that's why it's quite interesting to talk about this so early in the season. But those three were really tested this weekend. And and only one of them.
00:09:04
Mikey
transpired ah victorious and that was Liverpool. They went 1-0 down to Brighton and quite honestly Brighton were the better team for for much of that match. um They broke Liverpool down so high up the pitch and countered. The transition from breaking down play to counter attacking football for Brighton is frightening and that's probably and the juxtaposition of their longevity in the Premier League and how they've established themselves quite as as a very difficult team to beat. But Liverpool had enough.
00:09:38
Mikey
to to ride that and Gappo and Salah within three minutes and had reversed the result and and they saw out a 2-1 victory at Anfield ah which put them at the top of the league and the other results they must have been laughing. Yeah it's Liverpool to lose I think this year.
00:09:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh um I definitely could agree with you that for Liverpool to lose, as much as I hate to say, but I just think it's still so early on, it's so open and so many teams got a tough itch, but I mean, I was what i was on my way back from Blackburn watching what I was trying to watch to all the games on final score and one of my mates turned around to me and said, right, that Brighton game is reaching the 68-6 snap in it.
00:10:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
guarantee you by the 73rd minute they'll be 2-1 up and he was right.
00:10:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Literally, within any seconds of when he said that, Salah goes and scores and then you look at, sort you look at ah sorry, Hakapo goes and scores and then Salah goes and scores again and you thought, they just get it done, don't they? And Curtis Jones, massive shout out to him.
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's been brilliant for Liverpool over the last few weeks and absolutely another sublime performance from him. um But Brighton, again, I'm surprised that, as you mentioned up about how fickle football fans are, how fickle is Brighton's defence at times? Because they seem to go into league here and there, don't they? And then they kind of just tail off towards the back end of the last 20 minutes. and But again, they both teams had chances. I think it was just a case of Liverpool talking.
00:11:00
Mikey
Yeah, definitely. But I mean, the the first goal for Brighton was, you know, the 21 passes oh in the space of like just 30 minutes and and and they scored. If that was a Barcelona or Real Madrid, we'd have been seeing replays of that goal for a very long time. And to do that at Anfield, I just think shows testament. I'd rather be a Brighton fan losing 2-1 the way that they played.
00:11:25
Mikey
and than going there giving respect and just coming away with ah with an accepted defeat. um I thought they did well, but I like you say, it's susceptible to to conceding goals. It's remains to be seen. Maybe you're right, it is too early to talk about the title race, but it's never too early to talk about who we choose as our podcasting central guide. Here at the Global Sports Podcast Network,

Global Sports Podcast Network
Moving on, moving on.
00:12:33
Mikey
We're improving. Like our listenership, we are slowly improving. We're going to move on to the
Nottingham Forest and West Ham's Issues
00:12:41
Mikey
rest of the game on Saturday. And I'd jump in wherever you feel you want to, Tom.
00:12:45
Mikey
I think we've talked, we've mentioned him already. So I want to go to Forest West Town. It was a... ah a comprehensive victory. 3-0, I thought the sending off was a bit harsh.
00:13:00
Mikey
I don't know about you, what your opinion on that was, but Chris Wood is the takeaway story for Forrest and how he scored the opener, Hudson O'Doy and Aina, what else do I say his name to him?
00:13:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oleana. Oleana.
00:13:19
Mikey
Yeah, a comfortable victory against West Ham.
00:13:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think so. I'm sorry, I paused there because I thought you were going to say something else. I think just on Nottingham Forest in particular, you look at their performances so far this season, they've been absolutely brilliant. I mean, Nuno Sperisante was down there as the manager that brought them to be sacked at the start of the season, wasn't he? Forest were one of those four or five favourites to go down this season. Third in the Premier League, above Arsenal, above Villa, above Chelsea,
00:13:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're looking at that and going, wow, that is something to be proud of. And the performance they put in at home to West Ham was something else. I mean, Aina's goal was unbelievable. Chris Wood is the second top goalscorer in the league so far this season. Football is well and truly back, Mikey. We've got Chris Wood in the top five goalscorers in the league. I started watching Burnley back in the day. It's unbelievable.
00:14:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
fromman from a, from a forest point of view is absolutely superb. And you mentioned that red card as well. It is unlucky a little bit from Edson Alvarez's point of view, but but obviously had the yellow card and then was it four or five or six minutes later we get sent off.
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's two red cards for Edson Alvarez in three starts for West Ham. That's awful. The, the discipline around the Mexican is, is the way he's gone, he literally received the red card and gone, I'm still going to go flying into a challenge here and there.
00:14:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm still going to go and you know, antagonise couple of players, maybe maybe have a little bit of a go at the referee and he just had it coming from you. Even if he didn't get sent off for that challenge, more than likely would have gone on and five minutes later and committed a challenge similar.
00:14:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
and and he probably would have been sent off again. So for me, the West Ham I'm really worried for them this season. I don't think they'll go down. I really don't. I
Ipswich in the Premier League
00:14:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
mean, they've got more than good enough squad. But I think for the heights of what they've had over the last few years under David Morris, Lopetegui has got to get his act together. He really does tactically because the performances from West Ham over the last few weeks have been atrocious. The Manchester United result, they got away with it a little bit because Manchester United missed the chances that the Red Devils should have been falling up a half time. and that three points as big as it was a big three points, but this week against Nottingham Forest, they should have taken the momentum of that game into this week and they really didn't.
00:15:25
Mikey
Yeah, no, definitely. And then we're going to jump on to Ipswich against Leicester. Now, I feel like I've spoken to you quite a lot about how Ipswich have performed so well this year and not yet reaped the reward of those performances. and And you'd like to think that at home to Leicester,
00:15:44
Mikey
a team struggling, this was their chance to to get three points on the board, to to state their claim as a Premier League side this year. And it seemed to be going that way. 1-0 up, Davis on 55 minutes in the second half and then obviously the sending off ah for Calvin Phillips.
00:16:03
Mikey
And it was a snatch and grab from Leicester who seemed to be doing this quite a lot. 90 plus four minutes, Jordan, are you? And they clinched another point. and I don't know. i it's it's ah It's probably a fair result for the game. But I just feel that if you're going to stay in the Premier League, these are the games that maybe you need to be. These are the six pointer in this sense.
00:16:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, if mean if youre if you're going to go stats, Mikey, I think Leicester probably should have picked up three points in this game, but a bit of brilliance from Leif Davis, wasn't it? His first penalty goal, beautiful volley from the wing back, but Leicester seem to be having this tendency, as you said, to be getting these last-minute winners. They did at south hampston and they did did it They did it this weekend, and I think he was really smart from Steve Cupid, so he rest quite a few of those first-team players midweek in the Carabao Cup. Jamie Vardy was never going to be anywhere near Old Trafford on ah um Wednesday night, was he? i mean You look at Jordan, he was obviously started on Wednesday and then he comes on.
00:16:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
s scores in the 94th minute saves the day for Leicester another pointable but Ipswich again they just need to try and sort of when they've got a lead they they're not really right obviously say I mean we've mentioned Ryder you right into your look ah for quite a few times they've not really been on the lucky side of anything this season have they they've kind of been unlucky with VAR decisions whether it be that whether it be ah certain shots just going one way the post or the other and then you look at Leicester and go they've been the team that rode the look immensely so far this season they've reaped the rewards completely of it but for Ipswich They're still promising signs there, they're really is.
00:17:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Keirah McKenna's, if you watch Ipswich consistently over the first 10 other games this season, he switched things up tactically here and there that have helped Ipswich in different games, but they've just not quite been able to say it over the line.
00:17:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think the only reason you can put that down to is because the squad, the starting 11, isn't Premier League quality. You've got a mix of Premier League and championship quality.
00:17:46
Mikey
I'm going to talk to you about this. I'm going to talk to you
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think I keep coming back to that, don't I, over the season about Ipswich. It's just, unfortunately, can't get over. But when they do get that first three points, which they will do, and I really hope they do before the end of November, because if they don't, it's massively worrying for them. and
Wolves vs. Palace and Other Matches
00:18:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah wed be It'll be a really big moment.
00:18:04
Mikey
Yeah, and then we're moving on to the Molyneux, which had an hour of very little going on, and 10 minutes of chaos, and both teams came out square. ah Yeah, in the space of 10 minutes, the game finished too well, fans got something to watch. it was It was an interesting watch, but an expected result, I think, for both of these teams.
00:18:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
As I know now for a second, there's this Wolves Palace.
00:18:29
Mikey
Wolves Palace, yeah.
00:18:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
From a Wolves point of view, it's really disappointing, but this is off the back of the worst of Premier League's last season. The fixture list was horrendous for the first 10 games. You look at Wolves now, they should have picked up three points.
00:18:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
They really should have done. I mean, they had chances and then they just like slip away from their grasp. But Palace, you can see the defensive defensively in particular, they're really missing Joachim Anderson this season, and especially his passing. You look at on the right side, Elise A is the big game. Over the few last few weeks, they've kind of solved that a little bit, but they do still remain the third the the third-least goalscorers in the Premier League with what what is now nine.
00:19:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
So you look at that and go, they need to be scoring more goals.
00:19:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
They need that purple patch Mateta again. And Ketya maybe needs to hit the ground running a little bit more.
00:19:18
Mikey
I'm going to show you how to do that.
00:19:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll say it once again, I really want to see in Ketya and Mateta starting as a two more, because I think they really complement each other. And then you just have Eze maybe in behind them as if you play a 4-4-2 or what what and Oliver Glazner might do surrounding that.
00:19:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
But for Wolves, again, promising performance, but they're really just not getting over the line and they just, I feel like they just need, they need, obviously they got the number nine at the minute who's rate a really young lad. I think they may may be missing that a little bit more experience in the squad they've had over the last few years with the likes of Aruban Nevers, the likes of Akana Cody at the back.
00:19:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But again, I think Wolves might just be firing this season.
00:19:52
Mikey
Yeah and let's really quickly just touch on and one Aaron Rumsdale saving Southampton but late VAR call ruling out an equaliser for Everton and Southampton stopping I think it's 22 matches.
00:20:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:08
Mikey
The streak's over. um Yeah 1-0 to Southampton against Everton. Big game really.
00:20:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, especially at the bottom of the table, and you look at Everton's performances over the last few weeks, and they've been very mixed. You don't really know why when you when you play Everton what you're going to get, even when watching them. And ah Southampton definitely, again, rode the look at times. They deserve to be 1-0 up. And Aaron Ramsdale, I love them. I love, as much as i he's been a quite a controversial character over the last few seasons, whether it be Arsenal or Bournemouth.
00:20:37

he loves and mind games, you looked at him sticking his tongue out and dancing in front of Beto when he made that save and then when the goal was disallowed but a much needed three points for Southampton.
00:20:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think you're going to jump in and talk about the Global Sports Podcast Network. Tottenham's Comeback Against Villa
00:21:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sports Podcast Network, every club, every day. Let's dive into Sunday's fixtures, Mikey. And I want to start off with Tottenham Hotspur, 1-0 down at halftime.
00:21:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
horrendous defending from a set piece once again and then Tottenham, what happened after half time because to go in score four after James Madison started on the bench as well, what's what's gone on there?
00:21:29
Mikey
Yeah, big change. Solanke double. Brennan Johnson and as you say James Madison off the bench, 90 plus six minutes. and What a performance in the second half. A game of two hours is never better said. um You thought Villa were going to carry out that game very very much like they have done this year, really. and But i don't i don't there was there' a big change in the way that the game swung and Villa couldn't contain Tottenham and it seemed when they when they scored quite early in the second half um that they took a grip of the game and you know where they they they they kept putting a lot of pressure on them and when Solanke got his first
00:22:15
Mikey
It didn't take long until it it it doubled on that and Villa was struggling. and So I think a very great result for Angie's side and that pressing game that they played out of that very intense attacking style came to fruition in the second half.
00:22:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I really did. And you look at Villa and you go, their team, I feel like they're really feeling the effects of European football at the moment. And I think they're feeling the effects of having to play what the what is essentially Wednesday, when wednesday Thursday, ah either a Tuesday, do Wednesday, Thursday, and then ah and then a a Sunday fixture every week. and So I'm mixing up European games in the Caravale Cup midweek. But as a whole, it's a strange time to be a Tottenham Hotspur fight, isn't it? Because again, you don't know what you're going to get from them tactically. think Anthroposcopy has been really good the last few weeks. I mean, it's not it's not easy leaving James Madison out in the start of November, and then he comes on to score the sublime free kick. and then But from Villa, the game management I thought was really poor in the second half, especially when they even when Spurs got that early goal. And so not able to have the attacking prize to show that they usually have was quite disappointing. But if
Manchester United vs. Chelsea Analysis
00:23:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
not on left, we'll just dive into the out well the the the game at Old Trafford.
00:23:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a really strange one. It was a game that lacked opportunities for either side. A penalty for Bruno Fernandes and then a gold brilliant goal from Caesado. I don't want to touch too much on Manchester United because we'll talk about them a little bit later on this week. But I want to touch on Chelsea because I thought they were really underwhelming. I thought tactically they tried to build up with a three at the back then they tried to they they broke hook around a half time with a fugusto which was strange when gusto had a really good really good at a few opportunities down that right hand side col palmer was sort of in and out of the gaming glimpses he had a couple good moments of skill but nothing of no and then jackson he was really isolated up front i thought in a sense and um as a whole
00:24:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a really strange game because Manchester United again rode the look at times, probably should have had finished off the chances that they had as usual this season. But Chelsea, again, they created chances hit the post in the first half. What are your thoughts?
00:24:19
Mikey
Yeah, and I was quite interested watching that game in how easily when United had it to to manage Chelsea. and I agree with you the road to look, but they they didn't ever look um in doubt of, you know, they never looked stretched at all. I also thought the transitional play from United was, United get them, I know you said we're going to talk about them next week, but I did want to mention it, they get themselves into really great positions.

Yeah, Ganache's decision making in the second half was nothing short of atrocious, to be honest. I mean, he's got such raw talent, but I feel like he's one of those where he probably shouldn't be playing 90 minutes every single game, every single week.

He should have took that down and it should have been in the back of the net should have been all over anyway. We're getting into Azure 90 fans and we need to deviate from this.

Yeah, but just on the Xerxes one as well, it's the substitution where Rasmus Holland, if he's on the end of that ball when he's running through and Xerxes looks like he's running through quicksand.
