Introduction and Guest Welcome

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome back to the Daily English Premier League Podcast brought to you by GSPN. My name is Tom Jolly and today I'm joined by an Arsenal fan who's been down in the dumps despite picking up three points at the Champions League. Nick, how are you mate?
00:00:21
Nick
I'm good. I'm hoping we'll look better this weekend in a set of interesting features.
00:00:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
a very set of interesting fixtures for Arsenal indeed on

Nottingham Forest's Schedule Quirks

00:00:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sunday. But what's that off with the Friday fixture? And this is a bit of a weird one for me because Nottingham Forest travelled to Leicester, but Nottingham Forest played on Monday. What's with the scheduling there, mate? Because for me, if you've played on Monday and Friday, I get it because they're not in Europe, but it's a bit strange to see me and other teams having other days off.
00:00:46
Nick
I don't think there's really any explanation for it. Just weird scheduling to get the teams on TV to meet quotas, I'd imagine. I think it's a little bit of a Derby game if I'm right in thinking they're relatively close to each other. So and two pretty decent like for both teams are pretty decent for trying to say coming into this game. So I think it could could get interested interesting, but I definitely favor for us despite being away.

Leicester's Form and Vardy's Impact

00:01:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was going to so go move towards Leicester first as they did pick up a dramatic late winner away at St Mary's against Southampton last weekend, 3-2 after being 2-0 down at half time.
00:01:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Jamie Vardy might have a little bit of say in this one. Don't get me wrong, he's getting on a bit, but he loves to taunt every away fan in the world with the fact he's won a Premier League and if they haven't. But not even Forrest, I'm sure they'll be flexing their Champions League trophy with pride away at the King Power. Do you not think Leicester are going to have a big say in this one? I mean, not a good Forrest, don't get me wrong, they've been really impressive so far this season, picking up three points on Monday as well, but um I'm feeling a little bit of Leicester magic at home here, Nick.
00:01:55
Nick
I've been pretty impressed with Lester. I think there wasn't much expected of them with Cooper coming in, but they've looked pretty good. Win or not, he looks really good. Fotawu off the bench last week looked phenomenal. So I know Cooper said he's trying to introduce Fotawu gradually, but I think he has to start him this weekend and that could definitely cause some difficulties for Forrest, who have been really good defensively. but i think you just have to sort of favor Forrest like slightly just because they're a bit more established in the Premier League at the moment and I think their goals are a bit more shared out even though that
00:02:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm looking at the Nottingham Forest front line. Chris Wood's been leading the line over the last few weeks and he's been in superb form scoring again on Monday night, much to the despair and frustration of the Crystal Palace fans with Dean Henderson not saving it. For me, I think Nottingham Forest were a team who summed it to go down at the start of the season. I've got a really promising front line. I think Alanger, Hudson or Doy, Chris Wood, Morgan gives away when he comes back from injury.
00:03:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
um or suspension. And then you look at on the bench, Taiwan, I want you off the bench is a absolutely class option to bring in and enter the fray around that 70 minute mark. So for me, I've been really impressed with not first attacking my season. It was scored a lot more goals than I expected. But from a defensive point of view, they've also been superb. I think Marillo for me, he's been the standout. I think he could clearly play a level above Nottingham forest. I mean,
00:03:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't get me wrong, Steve Cooper signed a lot of names while he was the manager at the city ground. But for me, Nottingham Forest have had a quiet premises, but I don't know. I'm feeling a bit less than magic. or But with that being said, we'll move into Saturday's fixtures. I'll just run you through the the running order. So no 1230 kickoff on a Saturday, due to the being Friday night football. So Aston Villa, the first game on Saturday. Well, I say first game, the the first game on the list at home to Bournemouth. Brentford at home to Ipswich. Wolves travel to the Amex at Brighton. Manchester City hosts Southampton now.
00:03:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you've got a feel for Southampton after they travel into the Etihad after the couple of results they've picked up in the last few weeks. And then Everton face Fulham at half-five on a Saturday, so only five fixtures on a Saturday for the Premier

Aston Villa vs Bournemouth

00:04:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
League this weekend. But we'll start off with Villa, really impressed with them picking up another three points midweek in Europe. It's a wonderful time to be a fan of Villa.
00:04:15
Nick
Yeah, they I think this most exciting game on Saturday, because you got two really tactically street managers, and both teams have had a good start. If you look at Bournemouth, they're not miles behind them, and they've only had really one surprising loss, which was to Leicester, which they really should have won. They missed a load of chances. And obviously coming off beating Arsenal last weekend, they'll be very confident going into this game.
00:04:42
Nick
It's they got see next week Bournemouth and Villa have Spurs and Liverpool after so they're both in a tough run, but I think Villa at home or just something else like as much as I'm really impressed with Bournemouth I think it's gonna be a tough ass to go to Villa Park and get the job done.
00:05:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you expect John Deron to actually start a game in the Premier League for Aston Villa? I think he did start midweek, but as a man who's been bagging the goals off the bench for Villa and Unai Emery's side, he's been a really promising prospect, as the Colombian said. Do you expect him to start on Saturday afternoon?
00:05:17
Nick
No, I think Resting Watkins middle week for obviously he came off the bench, but I think Watkins is his guy ah So I think he'll stick with him But I do you think villa have a little bit of an issue early on this season with like clinicality Basically, they've got 15 goals But they've created 23 big chances and Watkins has missed the most big chances in the league with eight so Maybe he'll look in the future to starting Duran, but I think what Watkins did last season he's got to show faith in him despite Duran's like great performances off the bench and sometimes like Arsenal have with Trossard You just need to accept that someone's really good off the bench. Like don't don't compromise that
00:06:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
and looking at Bournemouth a massive three points picked up at home against Arsenal last weekend, much much to the dismay of probably you as an Arsenal fan and many other fans of the Gunners but Bournemouth really impressed them in Ryan Christie's goal with something else, a beautiful set piece play that saw him it hit the back of the net for Bournemouth's second but for me you can't look past Aston Villa but how of you how much have you been impressed by Bournemouth this season?
00:06:31
Nick
I've got a soft spot for Bournemouth. I think they're their front line and they' like their wing of depth is so underrated. Semenyo, I love since he's joined Bournemouth. He could easily move to a bigger club if he wanted to, I believe. But their wing of depth in general, when you look at Tavernier, Clyver, Wataris, and Isterra. It's incredible. Like, Evan Nielsen I don't think has joined and really like emphasized himself in the team, but when they've got like scoring from their wingers and even they've got a pretty good spread of goals from their midfield as well, they're getting points and getting over the line. So I don't think they'll have any problems and they could make it
00:07:15
Nick
quiet push for it like Europe for a conference this year to be honest.
00:07:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's really interesting to think about Bournemouth in that perspective. Go maybe into some of the other Saturday fixtures. I mean, butll we'll go to the one that's the most obvious in Manchester City at home to Southampton now.

Man City vs Southampton: Haaland's Fantasy Value

00:07:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
For those who play fantasy football, it's got to be one of the most perfect fixtures to captain Erling Hartland, isn't it?
00:07:37
Nick
Yeah, you've got City coming off an easy midweek game, going into an easy game at the weekend as well. like This is a dream for Harland and just a dream for City. like We made our game against Southampton harder than it needed to be. I really don't think City will make it difficult for themselves.
00:07:58
Nick
This could be one where Foden comes in and actually starts. He's not started a lot this season and obviously Pep likes to have this thing where he rest players until about November, December. So maybe this will be the start of Foden's like winter run essentially. So I think this this just could be a drubbing as any game against Southampton feels like it could be when they're up against a big six team at the moment. It'll be interesting to see if Russell Martin sticks with the playing out, do you think he'll stick with that or do you think he'll try and be a bit more pragmatic?
00:08:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
As much as my opinion thinks that he should change, he definitely won't. We've seen him in many interviews over the last few weeks saying he'll be more than happy. Well, he won't he said he won't be happy if Southampton go down, obviously, because they're trying to stay up. But ah his his line was, as long as the players are doing what I'm asking them to do, ah he expects to remain Southampton manager come this time in next year. But you can't go to the Etihad Stadium against a team that has an absolute Norwegian robot who can pull off anything, as we saw midweek. I mean, that goal is something else.
00:09:03
Nick
It was a joke, an absolute joke of a finish.
00:09:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it really was. I mean, I think I saw a couple of people on the socials saying that for those of you who watched, you've been, you've been framing your living room, they do that section where it's like, what, what happens next? If you saw the screenshot of Erling Harlan jump up in the air towards the ball, like you'd never expect it to end up in the back of the net.
00:09:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Looking at the other three-cock kickoffs, Brighton Wolves, this is a bit of an interesting one because, ah I mean, Wolves have had the worst starting to themselves in the Premier League so far this season, ever, but they've had a really tough run of fixtures and I really feel for Garenia, but this could be one that if he loses to Brighton away from home, could he see the exit door?
00:09:42
Nick
I don't think you'll see it after this game. This is like the last one of that really ridiculous start. Probably the hardest any team will ever have. The next two games are for the international break. I think are the big ones. I believe one of them's Palace next week. And I think he'll need probably four, possibly even six points from those two games to keep his job. but I don't, there's ah four winless teams still and three of them play on Saturday. You just can't see any of them actually getting a win this weekend. And I think they really need to turn their attention to next week after, after probably losing to Brighton just to get some points on the board.
00:10:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Nick, you're predicting a bright and three points moving to, I guess the segue could be another team starting with B really, and Brenford obviously at home to Ipswich, you'd expect that to be another three points for Thomas Frankside.
00:10:39
Nick
Yeah, one one of the other winless teams in Ipswich, Brentford at home, are very difficult. They might yeah see if they return to their early goals, but unless Liam Delappe can continue scoring, which I've been impressed with him, but it's going to be difficult. ah I don't really know what to think of Ipswich. I don't know if you have any thoughts of how they've been so far, but they haven't really impressed as many probably expected. McKenna was sort of the darling, much like Luton's were last year. Have you seen that or have you been unimpressed with them?
00:11:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can't say I've been unimpressed. I think from an Ipswich point of view, they've kind of, I mean, they they did they did two back-to-back approaches in me from League One to the Championship to the Premier League in the space of two years. So for me,
00:11:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've built a team which is a championship super team. You look at the talent in that squad, Jack Clark, you look at Sammy Schmodix as the two big name signings from Sunderland and then from Blackburn Rovers. Those are the two that came in and you thought, they'll get the experience of playing in the Premier League and playing against such these world-class talents that the top teams have. But for me, those two in particular have come in and basically gone, right, it for an Ipswich fan, you're just happy to be here.
00:11:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
if you're going to go down you will more than likely be one of the teams at the top of that championship come next season and you're probably going to be fighting to come back up straight away. So it's a brilliant ploy from Kieran McKenna to bring ah talents in but the work for me is really Kieran McKenna seeing the exit door come in the season for a bigger project like Vincent company did. I'm not too sure but we'll quickly run over the final game on Saturday half five the Toffees Everton host Fulham Obviously, I think Fulham were unlucky last weekend, not to see three points, but Everton, brilliant. I mean, and I, he's a level above all the talent in that. Everton's what, in my opinion.
00:12:35
Nick
Yeah, I think he's been, it's probably second most exciting. I was going to say the most exciting for a second there, but it's harsh to take away McNeil from the top spot there.
00:12:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:48
Nick
They're slowly starting to find their way, and I don't think they'll have any worries about going down, even despite a pretty tough start again this year. but And Dye is so clearly better than most of their team. And even without Calvert-Lewin converting chances again, McNeil and Dye can spearhead them to points. I think this will be tough. Obviously, Fulmer incredibly good.
00:13:17
Nick
but it's no yucky Manderson for Fulham maybe that'll help Everton a little bit but I think the winger and midfield scoring as well as Jimenez finding his scoring piece again I'd expect Fulham to go there and at least get a draw
00:13:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
from an Everton point of view, it may, I mean, I mean, an Everton, but I'd ill him and die in point of view, realistically. It makes you take in hindsight. If Sheffield United had kept hold of him, do you think they would have stayed up last season? I'm not too sure. But Nick, tell me about Zengaster.

into Sunday's fixtures now, and there's a few tasty ones. Four games on Sunday, three of them being at two o'clock, which is something that you very rarely see.

Chelsea vs Newcastle: Predicted Outcome

00:14:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
One of them in particular being Chelsea versus Newcastle. This is probably one of the tastier ones of this weekend, and there is quite a few of them. Chelsea hosted Newcastle. Nick, talk to me about Chelsea first. How impressed have you been with them this season?
00:14:33
Nick
They've continued to impress with Palmer and Jackson. Enzo Maresque has made a much better introduction to the Chelsea fans and I think many would have expected and they found their group and our players and they're just trucking along. They could have got a result last week and going into this weekend, they're on a hard run as well. They've got United next week, Arsenal the week after.
00:14:59
Nick
this and next week you'd expect them to re-find their momentum they maybe lost a little bit last week they haven't lost at home in any competition to Newcastle since May 2012 and with Newcastle's poor start I think it'll be more of the same for Chelsea and I think it should be a pretty comfortable win actually
00:15:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
From a Newcastle point of view, there's all the talk and how I'm not being contacted as one of the 10 candidates by the FA who eventually chose Thomas Tuchel to lead the three Lions in 2025 through to 2026. But for me, Newcastle are a very strange team this season because don't get me wrong, they've had their injuries, but I would also expect Chelsea to be picking up three points at Stamford Bridge at from CUM 4-4 on Saturday. Crystal Palace versus Spurs. Now, Crystal Palace, right?
00:15:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oliver Nogast has come in, tried to play the three-back system this season. His signings in the summer, including Kamada, haven't really impressed him. The three-back system for Munich comes down to the wing backs. They don't work hard enough in Munoz and Tariq Mitchell, and they don't provide the attacking outlet that they should do.
00:16:06
Nick
I think they're nice enough players on paper but like you say they they have to give a bit more attacking outlook as well as because because just because of the position the Palace are they have to be slightly better defensively as well I think and like you touched on with the rest of their transfers like I think in Kettier and maybe Lacroix have been the only two good ones and obviously a bit biased on in Kettier but you you haven't catch on Mateta and you think maybe he's gonna play them together because of Mateta's form but you also have to acknowledge that it was probably just a purple patch and having no Alise I think people didn't quite give Alise the credit he deserved and he's gone to buy and shown the level he's actually at
00:16:58
Nick
And as a, it's almost, my he he looks a bit selfish and no it doesn't help the war and it's clearly carrying an injury. I think, I'm not sure if Glaston's actually set out right that he is injured, but I think I've seen reports he needs surgery and he just looks so uncomfortable.
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he does in that midfield. From a Spurs point of view, you were looking at Brandon Johnson's continuous fine form, obviously didn't score last weekend, but I mean, the the the tactical prowess really showed for me and really impressed me last week for a man's post-COVID to have the confidence to take off James Madison. Obviously realistically, they're one of their most creative players.
00:17:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah for Papé Simonfield and go on to win four unlike they did against West Ham last weekend. But for me, this this is three points for Spurs. I'd expect Son to come back in and grab a few goals to his name and I wouldn't surprise me if Brennan Johnson finds himself on the score sheet again. Speaking of West Ham, they face Manchester United at home on Sunday, a fixture last season that they tore the Red Devils torrid. But for me,
00:17:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm looking, don't get me wrong, when we're recording this on Thursday evening, we're about half an hour away from Manchester United having God knows what resort against Fena Baccia. When you're listening to this, you will obviously know that more than likely Fred's probably scored a hatchet against his old club. But from a Manchester United point of view, I'd hope this is three points.
00:18:12
Nick
Yeah, I'd expect three points as well. I've been really unimpressed with West Ham. I think United have to take the momentum from Brentford and potentially Fennepache if they do go there and beat Mourinho's side. But do you think Tenharg needs to stick with the front three he had last week? He hasn't for the game this evening. Do you think that front three of Gonaccio, Hoyland and Rashford is what you should stick with after last week?
00:18:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, but I think the reason he's rested the though the likes of Hoyland this evening, and and we'll probably take off a couple of those after ah you'd expect 60 minutes. So depending on the result, but that is the front. That is Manchester United's best front free bar. Maybe the inclusion of Alan Diallo.
00:18:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um in the right hands, I've been really impressed with the Ivorian so far this season, but that is United's best from free, and Duncan Roncoylan's just come back from injury, so I understand the rest in him. Xerxes, at times, I've been really impressed with Xerxes. He should have four or five goals to his name in a Manchester United shirt instead of one due to the chances he had, but ah for me, I'd expect this to be three points coming Manchester United's way, but we know what Manchester United are like.
00:19:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So unpredictable in the Premier League and every competition that the Red Devils play in the last fixture We're going to talk about in today's episode is the big one Super Sunday half for it's the prime time slot in the Premier League and it's Arsenal hosting Liverpool No, Saliba for this one is of course the big one for Arsenal, but realistically

Arsenal's Hopes Against Liverpool

00:19:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nick you've got a light for like black, well not like for like replacement with Caliphe already coming into the centre, but a very very justified substitute for him
00:19:44
Nick
That's if he's fit. He went off injured midweek and now with him, Saka, and potentially Timber all out.
00:19:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:53
Nick
I said on Monday or Tuesday with Mikey, I'm pretty confident still if Saka and Timber were to come into the side and that was but obviously before Callifuri got injured.
00:20:04
Nick
But now, looking ahead to it, Getting a little bit more worried after the game midweek as well I think the vibes around the club are pretty poor right now because despite getting wins and ah apart from last weekend The performance has been really poor recently. There's there's no life to the midfield there's we lack a connector in midfield and Everyone's screaming for when the area obviously you could say you don't need to put that pressure on a 17 year old but he comes on and we instantly look significantly better so I don't think he'll play again but he's if we're crying out for someone to link the midfield to the attack at the moment and yeah
00:20:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
So in the next words, and a bit of individual brilliance in that Arsenal team is what is needed. On the other side, the away team Liverpool have been so, I mean, I hate to say this as a Manchester night fan. I've been so impressed with them this season. On slots come in and one, what is it? 10 out of his first 11 fixtures and midweek made it 11 out of 12. Obviously did lose to Nottingham Forest at home earlier on in the campaign, but the midfield they've got on pay for it, you wouldn't look at it and go, it's amazing. But the likes of Gravenberg, Curtis Jones have been super solid, always consistent.
00:21:18
Nick
yeah and if sallow against sinchenko this weekend which is definitely a possibility oh be i can't i can't watch that battle again we've watched it too many times and we know we may as well just let them have a goal lead already like i'm hoping that it's at least kivio i'd honestly rather see miles lewis skelly play left back than cinchenko at the moment so coming coming into this game they'll be extremely confident of winning you have to imagine
00:21:51
Nick
And they're actually one of the only teams to not concede a corner to us since our set piece coach was appointed. They're the only team left in the league that didn't haven't conceded a corner to us.
