Jo
everyone, Joe here, and today's guest. I will admit, i had no idea ah ah about Michael and Weather Dragon until i walked past her booth at Gen Con.
00:00:20
Jo
And I was like, oh my god, a table made for people like me.
00:00:24
Mike Weathered Dragon
Now, tall people or nerds in general?
00:00:25
Jo
And I had to stop and talk. It's
00:00:28
Mike Weathered Dragon
Like, are we? Yeah.
00:00:29
Jo
all nerds, I guess.
00:00:29
Mike Weathered Dragon
Pretty good. How about yourself?
00:00:31
Jo
It was an amazing table, an amazing experience, and I'm so glad that we can sit down now with about 12,000 people walking by.
00:00:39
Mike Weathered Dragon
yeah
00:00:39
Jo
So, Michael, you been?
00:00:41
Mike Weathered Dragon
but again how much so
00:00:43
Jo
Not bad, not bad. I read the notes that we talked about before the show. You said that the journey of your company is not exactly one of a normal table maker.
00:00:54
Jo
Like, what were you supposed to do and instead of making tables?
00:00:56
Mike Weathered Dragon
Well, that's why I guess what it is, is when the idea popped into my head. let me backtrack a little bit. Got back into D&D seven ish years ago, seven, eight years ago.
00:01:04
Jo
right
00:01:06
Mike Weathered Dragon
one of those played when I was a teen, took the 25 plus year hiatus, got back.
00:01:08
Jo
but
00:01:11
Mike Weathered Dragon
i had kids, they got into it. So that's what dragged me back into the ah the game.
00:01:14
Jo
Nice.
00:01:16
Mike Weathered Dragon
So my brain is go big or go home, started getting back into it. I said, we need we need something really cool to play on. So the first design of the table that you saw as the Harbinger game table was meant for us.
00:01:25
Jo
Yeah.
00:01:27
Mike Weathered Dragon
It was, that's it. Like it was just supposed to be a cool table for us to play on.
00:01:30
Jo
Really?
00:01:30
Mike Weathered Dragon
I didn't make the table to you know, saying I want to be a table maker. You know, that's not what this was. so As people started coming, my buddy, Matt mainly pushed me.
00:01:38
Jo
Right.
00:01:40
Mike Weathered Dragon
He's like, Mike, you really need to show this to the world. So made it a business, made it a social media page and booked my first con.
00:01:46
Jo
Absolutely.
00:01:49
Mike Weathered Dragon
And of all kinds to book first was Gen Con 2021. So you want to talk about coming out the gate swinging, but that was like end of COVID era.
00:01:57
Jo
Oh, wow.
00:01:59
Mike Weathered Dragon
So it was a very small condensed Gen Con, the worst possible time to be doing this kind of stuff.
00:02:04
Jo
I remember.
00:02:05
Mike Weathered Dragon
But it but it that it was a good soft start start introduction to Gen Con for sure. and the con scene in general from somebody who has knew nothing about the scene.
00:02:15
Mike Weathered Dragon
And so it was, but yeah.
00:02:15
Jo
Really? Why do you pick Gen Con then? If you knew nothing about the con scene, that's a pretty...
00:02:19
Mike Weathered Dragon
I actually believe or not, it wasn't my first. There's a smaller con in Richmond, Virginia called Raven Con. That's about two hours from me.
00:02:26
Jo
Right.
00:02:27
Mike Weathered Dragon
That was my first book.
00:02:28
Jo
Cool.
00:02:29
Mike Weathered Dragon
They kept canceling 2019, 2020. twenty nineteen twenty twenty They And I was like, was i I was ready to just forget it at that point.
00:02:33
Jo
Right.
00:02:37
Mike Weathered Dragon
And then Gen Con decided that they were going to go ahead. So technically it wasn't my first con booked.
00:02:43
Jo
Yeah. Oh, I remember those years for Gen Con because they went one year online only. And then the next year was always touch. Do they go to that? It was like last minute, half time. And then there was the rules kept changing throughout the cons, including, by the way, 2025, the first con about all those major stroll, not baby strollers.
00:02:58
Mike Weathered Dragon
Right.
00:03:06
Jo
They're like, they use baby strollers to cart games.
00:03:06
Mike Weathered Dragon
there The wagons and the carts.
00:03:08
Jo
Yeah.
00:03:08
Mike Weathered Dragon
yeah
00:03:09
Jo
Yeah. The wagons. Does that make your table pop out more? People couldn't like block it with 12,000 things are carrying and like, does it give you better traffic towards your table when people aren't trying to like that?
00:03:24
Mike Weathered Dragon
uh it's hard to say because it comes in clusters like people ah that energy kind of builds when like couple people are talking then it kind of draws the next person in and then then the crowd you know people kind of build the crowd and then it'll be quiet and there'll be nobody there for 15 minutes and then so it's weird it comes and goes i don't know if the the wagons per se have anything in particular to do with that that that i i can't really answer that tough to say
00:03:28
Jo
Right.
00:03:35
Jo
Right.
00:03:51
Jo
just I was just wondering because that was the first time we could walk around without getting like banged into a
00:03:56
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah.
00:03:57
Jo
And you had a prime real estate, by the way.
00:04:00
Mike Weathered Dragon
No, I didn't.
00:04:00
Jo
Like by those walls.
00:04:02
Mike Weathered Dragon
No, no, no, no.
00:04:03
Jo
You didn't?
00:04:03
Mike Weathered Dragon
That was that was a terrible spot.
00:04:04
Jo
Which wall is better?
00:04:05
Mike Weathered Dragon
the The spot was, this the location was terrible.
00:04:06
Jo
That really? my gosh. I always thought the walls because we always had the... Yeah.
00:04:09
Mike Weathered Dragon
I, my 21 and 22, was more central. and And just to give you a perfect example, standing at the booth on exhibitor hours, I would turn and look at the row, but technically behind me, that traffic was busy as shit.
00:04:16
Jo
yeah
00:04:22
Jo
right
00:04:23
Mike Weathered Dragon
And the fact that it wasn't like a true corner, people just weren't making that last like loop around.
00:04:27
Jo
Yeah. Oh, that's right.
00:04:29
Mike Weathered Dragon
Like you my traffic was one fourth than what was in front of me, just watching people. I'm like, what the fricking hell, man? So it it showed this year, the spot was,
00:04:36
Jo
Oh, you know what?
00:04:38
Mike Weathered Dragon
The spot was pretty dumpy.
00:04:40
Jo
No, no, yeah you're, you are absolutely correct. You're right. That's not the true corner. And a matter of fact, shamefully, I will say this. The reason why I found your booth is because I was like, that's way too crowded. I'm going this way.
00:04:52
Mike Weathered Dragon
Right. Like, yeah.
00:04:53
Jo
And I went towards that corner.
00:04:54
Mike Weathered Dragon
that' here's Here's another...
00:04:55
Jo
Because you because you have to if no one's been at the Gen Con, it's like this way, this way, then back down. And people were just kind of like cutting you out then.
00:05:02
Mike Weathered Dragon
here Here's another telltale sign of it being a bad spot. You are the only podcaster person that came and talked to me. Like in previous years, there was at least a dozen.
00:05:10
Jo
Wow.
00:05:12
Mike Weathered Dragon
at least. You were the only one.
00:05:13
Jo
Really?
00:05:14
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yep, you were the only one.
00:05:15
Jo
wow. And i'll I'll tell you, it's definitely not a sign of your craftsmanship. Because I said this before, and i I'll stand next to it. your tables blew everyone else's tables away.
00:05:26
Mike Weathered Dragon
Well, thank you.
00:05:27
Jo
And whoever you think is a gaming table, they're garbage can compared to yours.
00:05:31
Mike Weathered Dragon
I appreciate
00:05:32
Jo
Absolute overpriced garbage compared to yours.
00:05:32
Mike Weathered Dragon
That's super cool.
00:05:35
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah. When you look at, when you
00:05:36
Jo
And with Weather Dragon, yeah.
00:05:38
Mike Weathered Dragon
When you look at Wyrmwood selling the Prophecy for 10 grand, it's a gorgeous table and I'm not knocking it, but mine start at 95 and look, you're getting so much more for the same price. Like I get it, I choked, I took a small market and managed to make it even smaller.
00:05:52
Mike Weathered Dragon
it's The table's huge, it's it's dedicated RPG table. So in yeah, a lot of people want that dining room and game table conversion. So you almost have to have a game room for one of my tables, but but it's working slowly but surely.
00:06:05
Jo
But that's the thing. And what you said before about why you got into this table was you started Dozen Dragons as a kid. You took like 20 years off and then came back as an adult because your kids are in it.
00:06:20
Jo
You're the type of customer that your tables are for. The people who now have money, now have an established family and can have that game room.
00:06:28
Mike Weathered Dragon
Right. Right.
00:06:32
Jo
And they're gorgeous. And they're the first ones I am, I'll i'll say it in two different ways in case people don't know what feet are. Some people are like, what's the foot?
00:06:43
Jo
I'm nearly two meters tall. And this is the first table that didn't give my back issues.
00:06:48
Mike Weathered Dragon
right
00:06:49
Jo
Just by like, oh my God, it's actually like, really?
00:06:51
Mike Weathered Dragon
you heard You heard your back sigh of relief as you approached it.
00:06:52
Jo
It's like a bar.
00:06:55
Jo
Yeah, ah absolutely. and And I'm not saying if you were you have to be like this tall to enjoy your tables, you don't. But all the other tables, they just do not work if you're standing up.
00:07:08
Mike Weathered Dragon
Right. And that's that's our barstool height model.
00:07:09
Jo
There's no way you can stretch.
00:07:11
Mike Weathered Dragon
We do standard height also.
00:07:12
Jo
Yeah.
00:07:12
Mike Weathered Dragon
But again, that first model you saw is the very first one that I did.
00:07:14
Jo
Do you? Okay. Yeah.
00:07:16
Mike Weathered Dragon
so but yeah, but it's barstool, standard, whatever works for the customer.
00:07:22
Jo
So that's great. So not only do you do the standard height as we know for the table tables, but the ones that are attractive option wise for me would be the barstool. what What made you think about the barstool?
00:07:36
Mike Weathered Dragon
Playing for hours. Kick the stool back, stand up for a little bit, stretch your legs.
00:07:39
Jo
Yeah.
00:07:40
Mike Weathered Dragon
How long do people play? four five Four, six, eight hours sometimes?
00:07:41
Jo
Yeah.
00:07:43
Mike Weathered Dragon
like As a DM, I like to stand up anyway, and I hear that all the time too.
00:07:45
Jo
Yeah.
00:07:48
Mike Weathered Dragon
So it is it's a barstool height table, perfect standing height when you need it.
00:07:53
Jo
Yeah, and you still have the bar stools, so you can sit down still. It's not like you're like here if you take a seat.
00:07:57
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yep. Yep.
00:07:59
Jo
You're still at proper size.
00:08:00
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yep, yep.
00:08:01
Jo
you know And that's the greatest thing.
00:08:01
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yep.
00:08:02
Jo
And then, yeah.
00:08:04
Mike Weathered Dragon
And nobody's doing that.
00:08:05
Jo
One of the things, no one, no one at all.
00:08:05
Mike Weathered Dragon
Who's making barstool tables?
00:08:09
Jo
And that was the big issue. i We named them, like Wyrmwood makes fantastic product. They do. No doubt about it.
00:08:20
Jo
They come, they're like businessmen and it turns me off. They come there with this, it's just the whole spiel turns me off.
00:08:23
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah.
00:08:28
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yep.
00:08:28
Jo
And i just can't put down like the 10 G.
00:08:28
Mike Weathered Dragon
I've taken a few customers from them.
00:08:32
Jo
Yeah. Because you're knowing the product. You are the person you're making these, right? You don't have them like, how do you make these?
00:08:38
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah, don't know.
00:08:39
Jo
I'm just curious. Are you?
00:08:41
Mike Weathered Dragon
I'm like, what is it? The Microsoft guy starting his garage. I'm kind of still there, but it's my two-car shop.
00:08:46
Jo
Garage.
00:08:47
Mike Weathered Dragon
That's where I'm pumping them out.
00:08:50
Mike Weathered Dragon
thats where i'm pumping them out
00:08:52
Jo
That's amazing. That's amazing. And so you have a background in woodworking or just draft men or.
00:08:58
Mike Weathered Dragon
and A little bit of all of it. My blood, meaning my family, is are woodworkers, engineers.
00:09:01
Jo
Yeah.
00:09:04
Jo
Yeah.
00:09:05
Mike Weathered Dragon
I'm just loaded with that in my DNA to begin with. My father was a woodworker, so I grew up watching that.
00:09:11
Jo
Cool.
00:09:11
Mike Weathered Dragon
yeah, all the stars, I guess, just a align for me. have very good structural sense. One of my tables is six foot by nine foot and still has just four legs.
00:09:18
Jo
Yeah.
00:09:21
Mike Weathered Dragon
There's no center support whatsoever. Like it's it's a beast.
00:09:24
Jo
Really no center.
00:09:26
Mike Weathered Dragon
It's a beast.
00:09:26
Jo
Oh, my God.
00:09:26
Mike Weathered Dragon
It's four legs holding up. That's it. That thing spans nine foot and there's nothing else holding it up
00:09:33
Jo
Oh, wow. that that the That just goes to it. you you You know your craft. You are two craftsmen. And I think that says a lot about the way you present your tables because there's nothing I could ask you that time about your table that you didn't know.
00:09:50
Jo
There's not a single thing you didn't know about the table. And I've asked other companies, they had no clue.
00:09:56
Mike Weathered Dragon
But now I wonder, though, like you're you're you're talking to the guy who made it.
00:09:56
Jo
And it's frustrating, like, well, why are you here?
00:09:59
Mike Weathered Dragon
so you know, it's it's you might have been with other companies. It may have just been a worker bee who maybe didn't know all the ins and outs unless you were talking to one of war one guys heads and they didn't know.
00:10:06
Jo
but But that's exactly it.
00:10:10
Mike Weathered Dragon
Then, yeah, that's pretty bad.
00:10:13
Jo
Well, but that's exactly it. Like, if if you're there at a place, and again, we're not... Worm was coming out as a punching bag. I didn't mean to, but it, cause they do amazing craftsmanship. But if the entire thing is a sal sale, sale, sal sale, and you can't tell thing about your product, then what's your point?
00:10:32
Mike Weathered Dragon
right.
00:10:32
Jo
You know, and then you go over to find yours, which are more unique and handcrafted by the person. And right away, you had someone at your booth and what do you say?
00:10:44
Jo
You want to ask those questions right there. Anything he didn't know, he passed on. And that's all that, you know, that's exactly it.
00:10:50
Mike Weathered Dragon
you
00:10:52
Jo
And you are someone who is passionate about what you do. Passion about what you do. And that passion shows when you're talking about the features.
00:11:03
Jo
And features I didn't think I needed until you started, oh my God, I do need one of these. You're right.
00:11:08
Mike Weathered Dragon
Oh
00:11:09
Jo
So when you're, they had, you had carvings on yours. Some, is that just by like the old chiseling or how are you doing these?
00:11:16
Mike Weathered Dragon
God, no. No, yeah if you're referring to the the the light up the LEDs, how that, because there was there's really no like carving
00:11:18
Jo
Like, was thinking like engraving the router. Yeah.
00:11:25
Mike Weathered Dragon
A lot of the artwork, the black artwork that you see is just painted on, but the LED plaques, the room plaques on the side of the post, those are CNC'd with a you know with a computerized router that cuts those out.
00:11:26
Jo
Right.
00:11:32
Jo
Wow.
00:11:39
Jo
Okay. That sounds like a ticket into the, oh, it just got like a little router going.
00:11:42
Mike Weathered Dragon
yeah
00:11:43
Jo
Like, okay.
00:11:43
Mike Weathered Dragon
I'm not that good.
00:11:43
Jo
Okay. the
00:11:46
Mike Weathered Dragon
From hand whittling stuff.
00:11:47
Mike Weathered Dragon
That's crazy.
00:11:47
Jo
but you're that imaginative to do it that's the thing and that imagine to do it so you do all these where do you get your i i mean because construction is coming back talked about covid and covid at least in canada all the materials went up to here during that so how are you getting these materials i mean have they
00:11:48
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah. and
00:12:06
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah.
00:12:08
Mike Weathered Dragon
The price is leveled out. They're, I guess, where they should be, minus the you know or with the three years of inflation since then until now.
00:12:17
Jo
Right, right, right, right.
00:12:18
Mike Weathered Dragon
you know Other than that, they're okay. My price is getting made. they day I've had like one jump in the past two years, but they're they're holding steady.
00:12:30
Jo
No, that's not bad. That's not Because I always wonder about these things. And logistics, I i said this, and I'm very truthful. If I were in in the States right now, I would definitely have one of your tables right now.
00:12:42
Jo
How do you ship out your... I mean, those are massive.
00:12:45
Mike Weathered Dragon
They are.
00:12:45
Jo
Do they come like a freight? Like, what's what's the logistics behind that?
00:12:47
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah, it's a one. it's It depends on the table.
00:12:49
Jo
All
00:12:50
Mike Weathered Dragon
But my revelation is the six foot by nine foot one.
00:12:52
Jo
right.
00:12:53
Mike Weathered Dragon
That's two crates. But they all it's a big giant crate. And it's just huge. It's just a big ass crate. I trucking, I'll bring it to the terminal and the trucking company will bring it to your front door and drop it off.
00:13:05
Jo
Oh, wow. but That's just an amazing item for me. How do we find your tables not at a con? If I want to look at your tables at home going, oh, I wish I had this.
00:13:14
Jo
How do I do that?
00:13:15
Mike Weathered Dragon
I'm Northeast, North Carolina.
00:13:17
Mike Weathered Dragon
I've actually had somebody, I have a game room, which is technically my showroom, you know, in the house. So if somebody really wanted to, then I'll bring them here to the house to to show them the game room.
00:13:23
Jo
Right. Oh,
00:13:26
Mike Weathered Dragon
have a couple at local game stores around here.
00:13:27
Jo
cool.
00:13:30
Mike Weathered Dragon
and if I have, I got tables all around the country. so if not, meaning that they're not that all over the place, but if somebody lives close, you know, to one and I got one there and are, you know, obviously more than welcome to, you know,
00:13:37
Jo
Right.
00:13:42
Mike Weathered Dragon
A lot of my customers are really gracious too. And they say, Hey, and they will volunteer that. if you ever need somebody to come check out the table, I'd more than happy to show them. So I have that angle too.
00:13:50
Jo
Oh, did you ever.
00:13:50
Mike Weathered Dragon
Cause it's not just, it's not just one and done. a lot of customers I keep that relationship with.
00:13:54
Jo
Right.
00:13:55
Mike Weathered Dragon
So it's, it's, it's whole community thing.
00:13:58
Jo
Those brand loyalty that.
00:13:59
Mike Weathered Dragon
but
00:14:00
Jo
Oh, absolutely. And that's, that's one of the things I get. Again, we'll come back. was like, I like how personable you are and you really do care about your product. It's, it's part of you that you've sold.
00:14:11
Jo
This is you.
00:14:11
Mike Weathered Dragon
Oh, it is.
00:14:12
Jo
And now you're giving it.
00:14:12
Mike Weathered Dragon
it's It's a part of my soul for sure.
00:14:16
Jo
Absolutely. Absolutely. And then you ever, you ever install tables? Like i I can barely do a Kia. Like a Kia is like, Oh man, I can't do a Kia right now.
00:14:23
Mike Weathered Dragon
but we do white glove too. up to Gen Con, we did a drop off in Cincinnati, Ohio. I had a customer table in the trailer with all my con stuff. We stopped in Cincinnati. We set that up, delivered it, and then headed to Indianapolis from there.
00:14:38
Jo
Oh, wow. How quickly do you do that? How quickly do you think that it can be from set up to go?
00:14:44
Mike Weathered Dragon
We were there for maybe three hours total, start to finish.
00:14:44
Jo
long does it take for you?
00:14:50
Jo
Not bad. That's not bad. and Do you charge extra? I'm just curious as a businessman. Do you charge extra for the white glove?
00:14:58
Mike Weathered Dragon
it's It's the same price to ship it. If you're within that 10 hour-ish drive, I'll deliver and set it up for the same price to put it in a crate and and get it to you.
00:15:03
Jo
Wow.
00:15:10
Mike Weathered Dragon
And it's still worth it.
00:15:10
Jo
That's amazing.
00:15:11
Mike Weathered Dragon
And it's still worth it for me to do that for sure.
00:15:15
Jo
So basically you're saying I have to move in within 10 hours of North Carolina. I'll just yeah put a compass point here, 10 hour like around this.
00:15:20
Mike Weathered Dragon
but
00:15:24
Mike Weathered Dragon
Where, where in Canada are you?
00:15:27
Jo
Oh, I'm Montreal right now. the
00:15:29
Mike Weathered Dragon
And is, is that East or West?
00:15:30
Jo
Something to change. East, we border New York New Hampshire. It's all on a...
00:15:35
Mike Weathered Dragon
oh Dude, that's that's borderline of my... I just have to get a passport.
00:15:41
Jo
yeah Are you bringing it from the country? No, just a bunch of wood.
00:15:45
Mike Weathered Dragon
Oh, here here we go.
00:15:45
Jo
Don't ask what's that shape of.
00:15:47
Mike Weathered Dragon
Since we're on this topic, I am international.
00:15:49
Jo
Yeah.
00:15:49
Mike Weathered Dragon
I have a table in Australia.
00:15:53
Jo
Do you? How did you ship it to Australia?
00:15:56
Mike Weathered Dragon
On a boat. It took about two months.
00:15:57
Jo
That had to be like on a book.
00:15:58
Mike Weathered Dragon
I was crapping in my pants the whole two months, but but holy shit.
00:16:01
Jo
Oh, the entire time.
00:16:03
Mike Weathered Dragon
But it made it there, man.
00:16:04
Jo
Yeah.
00:16:04
Mike Weathered Dragon
and all
00:16:04
Jo
Inherit advice.
00:16:05
Mike Weathered Dragon
yeah That was interesting because Australia has a very, don't want say fragile, but maybe a delicate ecosystem.
00:16:07
Jo
Oh, man.
00:16:12
Mike Weathered Dragon
You know, there's a lot of stuff going on there. Holy crap.
00:16:15
Jo
Yeah, they can't take anything
00:16:15
Mike Weathered Dragon
The forms I had to fill out for the wood, the wood had to be, you know all treated all to make sure we're not bringing bugs in from, you know, one country to another.
00:16:18
Jo
Yeah.
00:16:23
Jo
Yeah.
00:16:24
Mike Weathered Dragon
Holy shit. it was It was a process. But after the, you know, after the grind, it was... a success. So, yep, international. We're good to go
00:16:36
Jo
thats That is amazing. i I barely send Christmas cards to Australia.
00:16:42
Mike Weathered Dragon
to go.
00:16:43
Jo
They might get there. They might not. So I understand.
00:16:45
Mike Weathered Dragon
yeah Yeah.
00:16:45
Jo
For a whole month, you're like, my God, oh, my God, oh, my God, oh, my God.
00:16:48
Mike Weathered Dragon
It's fully insured, so God forbid if the Connex box you know dumped in the ocean, you know it's it's it's fully covered, but just who wants to deal with that crap?
00:16:49
Jo
Exactly it. so
00:16:55
Jo
Yeah. At least to get the insurance back.
00:16:57
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah. Yeah.
00:16:59
Jo
No, it's just more paperwork. how How do picture these in your head? Like, how do you make your new designs? they come here first? Do they get an inspirational dream or what?
00:17:10
Mike Weathered Dragon
The first one, obviously from my head, but all the other reiterations were from customers and it comes down to, hey, this is really cool, but i can we do this?
00:17:14
Jo
Right.
00:17:18
Jo
Really?
00:17:21
Mike Weathered Dragon
And as long as I give make sense in my head first and put it on paper, put it in the program, make sure that all the numbers and measurements are going to work. Yeah, but that's pretty much all of them since the first one has been customer suggestions or reiterations.
00:17:36
Jo
are Are you kidding me? So if I wanted my artist friend, Kevin, to draw me up my perfect gaming table and we send it to you, you're like, yeah, sure.
00:17:49
Mike Weathered Dragon
ah Yeah, as long as I can make it make sense. Yep.
00:17:50
Jo
That's...
00:17:51
Mike Weathered Dragon
I like to keep my few trademark things like the 13 inches of player surface.
00:17:53
Jo
That's funny.
00:17:55
Mike Weathered Dragon
So everybody's got plenty of room. I like the outlets, you know, the ambiance, my weathered look for the legs.
00:17:58
Jo
Yeah. Yeah.
00:18:01
Mike Weathered Dragon
I keep pointing over here, but I'm sitting right next to the table. So, so yeah, to you know, to keep, you know, most of the, the, trademark things, but
00:18:06
Jo
Oh wow. Yeah.
00:18:11
Mike Weathered Dragon
ah ah One of the tables I did, the Kraken, that's my Octagon table. That has, that drifted from a lot of my trademark stuff, but it's what the customer wanted.
00:18:15
Jo
yeah
00:18:20
Mike Weathered Dragon
So I'm not going to tell them no, you know, that that's bad business. So...
00:18:24
Jo
Right. Absolutely. So you are able to do custom tables within, obviously, if you something just doesn't jive for you, like that's not physically possible right now, you can you'll be up front.
00:18:35
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah, it's it's got to make sense. the it the The room for the players, you know, sometimes people want stuff.
00:18:38
Jo
Yeah.
00:18:41
Mike Weathered Dragon
I'm like, hey, this is I can do this, but this is your end result. It may be you may be questioning once it gets you.
00:18:47
Jo
Yeah.
00:18:48
Mike Weathered Dragon
So I try to point out all that stuff. to I have a pretty good sense of flow in and in what works and what's good and what's not.
00:18:54
Jo
Yeah.
00:18:56
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah.
00:18:57
Jo
now one of the things that really drove me to your table was the way you did the weathered legs. Like it looks, it looks like it has been there forever.
00:19:11
Jo
You know, your tables have that timeless appeal to it. Is that on purpose then? It's gotta be right.
00:19:16
Mike Weathered Dragon
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I went through many. Oh, my God. The first two, it took probably about two years. Like the same formula I'm using now to get that look. it's It's been what I've been doing for like two, three years now.
00:19:28
Mike Weathered Dragon
But it took a while to get to that point, meaning everything gets painted black first and then it's layers of dry brush.
00:19:28
Jo
Wow. Right.
00:19:34
Mike Weathered Dragon
It's what colors am I using? How heavy are the dry brushes? So it's it's.
00:19:40
Jo
wow
00:19:40
Mike Weathered Dragon
it's, it's that it's the process, but it's, it's definitely to the point where it is what it's, what it's been for the past two years. And ah it's going to vary slightly from table to table, but I don't think anybody's going to notice, but me, you know, when, if you were to put them next to each other,
00:19:54
Jo
right Yeah, we as an artist critical eye, we always see that that that one struck, like, oh, no, I see that one. You know, that one thing that, like, you can notice. How long does it make you to to make you take it?
00:20:07
Jo
How long it take you to make one? Words today hard. Words today are hard. don't know why.
00:20:11
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah, they are. Brody, even word.
00:20:14
Jo
Yeah, like, oh. But how long does it take you?
00:20:16
Mike Weathered Dragon
it
00:20:16
Jo
month.
00:20:17
Mike Weathered Dragon
It takes about a month to to get a table done. And that includes the bigger ones too.
00:20:19
Jo
A month.
00:20:22
Mike Weathered Dragon
because it's just meaning a month, but maybe some of the days are longer days, 12-hour days instead of eight. But a normal normal eight to nine-hour day, normal work week, if I really want to push, I'll get one of my square ones done in two to three weeks.
00:20:28
Jo
Right.
00:20:34
Mike Weathered Dragon
But that's hustling. And that's that's that's a lot of 12-hour days consecutive.
00:20:38
Jo
That's awesome. Have you ever done ah ah two tables at one concurrently where you're doing a leg on one, a leg on another one, and then you go build, build, body, build, build again?
00:20:51
Mike Weathered Dragon
I'll do that to the point where I may make two sets of legs and a lot of the trim parts, but it stops there because once the tables start having to get assembled in the shop, one table, you know um only have enough room in the shop for one at a time.
00:20:57
Jo
Right.
00:21:02
Jo
is the room. Right.
00:21:05
Mike Weathered Dragon
So
00:21:07
Jo
But that's a selling point. It really is. One at a time. This is not mass produced stuff.
00:21:11
Mike Weathered Dragon
when I'm done, yeah they're not, they're really not.
00:21:14
Jo
It's one at a time. Oh,
00:21:16
Mike Weathered Dragon
Even when I was hoping to get a bigger shop this year, this year i live on about an acre. So I have room in the back for a detached building, which is what I was trying to do this year.
00:21:22
Jo
cool.
00:21:25
Mike Weathered Dragon
But the stars didn't align. Man, once I get a space that's efficient, I can easily do two tables a month still just by myself.
00:21:26
Jo
Yeah.
00:21:33
Mike Weathered Dragon
But at that point, I definitely want to bring in the the apprentice and you know um the help at that point.
00:21:40
Jo
That's another thing is like people who think the only pathway to success is a four-year college degree, you know, the four-year university degree, which, you know, I'm guilty of charge. Well, that's Jim Morrison. Hold on.
00:21:56
Jo
Degrees or on this one, like, wait, that that's that's a preacher.
00:21:58
Mike Weathered Dragon
You got a degree in Jim Morrison?
00:21:59
Jo
That's nevermind.
00:22:02
Jo
Yeah, I got it. Who knew? Who knew? And, you know, I'm putting the good work now. But to be an apprentice in a trade that is making your own business.
00:22:16
Jo
And I've known so many people who went that route who are extremely happy with that choice. And I think you would be a great person to learn from because your creativity and your passion are still there.
00:22:32
Jo
know, I think anyone, once you get that shot made in your your back half, let's say, you know, anyone who wants to learn, would you take someone who is just getting out of trade school or even little bit even wetter behind the ears? Right.
00:22:49
Mike Weathered Dragon
I don't think I would put a set of, I've thought about the application process, right? And literally it would be, ah ah some of the questions would be just a lot of, dude, this woodworking thing, it's all about troubleshooting and fixing the last problem.
00:22:56
Jo
Right.
00:23:06
Mike Weathered Dragon
If something went wrong, it's it's all right. What can I do so this doesn't happen again? So I've done this crap enough to where I've weeded out a lot of the possible errors and in crap that can go wrong.
00:23:12
Jo
Right.
00:23:17
Jo
Right.
00:23:18
Mike Weathered Dragon
So it would be, it's i guess it's all about problem solving. So the application process would be maybe 10 just generic questions of issues. How would you resolve this? I want to know their brain and how it works, because to me, that's more valuable than a degree or schooling.
00:23:29
Jo
Right.
00:23:34
Mike Weathered Dragon
You know, you don't... so
00:23:35
Jo
Yeah.
00:23:35
Mike Weathered Dragon
I'm not going to because somebody doesn't have any schooling that they're definitely still going to be a candidate. I'm more concerned about their creativity and their problem solving skills, I think, are more important than than any classroom education, you know, more real world experience, I guess, ultimately.
00:23:47
Jo
yeah
00:23:53
Jo
Yeah, that this sounds like like my dad it sounds like my dad, because he was a craftsman, and he did have a degree in welding. yeah in junior college degree in welding but he was a wisman he i'm looking at some of the stuff he made and he would fabricate anything on the wood anything from wood metal or sometimes glass he could just do it in his head and as long as he could see it in his head as saying as long long as you can see it it's real as long as you can see that it will work it can be made and and i agree with you i agree with you schooling and training will take you so far but you have to have the passion you have to have that mindset of yeah
00:24:18
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah.
00:24:28
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah. Right. If you don't have that passion in the guy with the four year or woman with the four year degree, and there's just, it's, your it's, you're missing something.
00:24:36
Jo
Right.
00:24:39
Mike Weathered Dragon
Right.
00:24:40
Jo
You can have all the technical skills in the world.
00:24:42
Mike Weathered Dragon
Right.
00:24:42
Jo
You can have all the technical skills in the world, but they're not good if you don't have the vision.
00:24:47
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yep. You need the passion. You need the passion for sure.
00:24:48
Jo
I mean, know what what exactly.
00:24:49
Mike Weathered Dragon
and And I get that a lot talking to people about what I do and my craft and about the table.
00:24:49
Jo
Right.
00:24:55
Mike Weathered Dragon
I've had people just go, holy crap, just I want to bottle this energy that that you're spitting at me right now.
00:24:56
Jo
right
00:25:00
Mike Weathered Dragon
And, you know, because it is And when you're passionate about it it it comes out and it's it's kind of hard to hold back.
00:25:08
Jo
Well, that's why again, I love the dynamic between your tables and yourself because both say this is a work of passion.
00:25:17
Mike Weathered Dragon
All right.
00:25:20
Jo
This is a work of art. And this is something that because I wanted in the world, I made this in the world. And that goes a long way when I'm looking at things like, oh my God, there's so many details on your tables that just draw me. And it could be as simple as having the bar.
00:25:37
Jo
I'm like, this is nice. the The quality of the wood, the choices that you made to design it, they all pop out.
00:25:38
Mike Weathered Dragon
right
00:25:45
Jo
They all pop out and they all have purpose. They all have purpose, right?
00:25:48
Mike Weathered Dragon
Right, right. It's not it's not just fluff.
00:25:49
Jo
have you tried anything? No, it's not fluff. Have you tried anything that you thought this would be great? And you're like, once you put it into life, you're like, Oh no, no, that was not, that wasn't it.
00:26:01
Mike Weathered Dragon
Nothing that severe, but like the very first one I did, all i managed to pull out all the ideas in my head and make it a thing.
00:26:07
Jo
Yeah.
00:26:10
Mike Weathered Dragon
But then, dude, I can't even tell you how many much that it's evolved from five years ago till now.
00:26:12
Jo
Yeah.
00:26:16
Mike Weathered Dragon
Meaning... just measurements tweak. This is good, but man, we need to pull this one out a little bit and stretch this one.
00:26:21
Jo
Maybe better.
00:26:22
Mike Weathered Dragon
in And then the the LED room plaques came. Finally found, I've always wanted torches. Those are 3D printed. I found a dude who had a great file for torches.
00:26:29
Jo
I love it.
00:26:31
Mike Weathered Dragon
So it just, the ah spent on it definitely ah ah improves them as well. so
00:26:39
Jo
That's an amazing thing. you basically build a prototype in your garage.
00:26:43
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yes, oh, absolutely.
00:26:46
Jo
For yourself.
00:26:47
Mike Weathered Dragon
ye
00:26:47
Jo
And then thought like, oh, no, definitely. Yeah, this works. So is there anything, you said 3D printing, is there anything that you wish you could do now, but you just don't quite have the technology yet?
00:26:59
Mike Weathered Dragon
the The LED plaques that are CNC'd, my guy who does my 3D printing does those also. So once with the bigger shop, I do want the laser engraver and my own CNC machine because
00:27:07
Jo
Right.
00:27:13
Mike Weathered Dragon
That is just the the tip of the iceberg as far as the CNC-ing goes. I would love to CNC three-dimensional logos on the, i don't know if you remember, but on the back of the post, my logo, again, is just painted.
00:27:19
Jo
right oh yeah
00:27:26
Mike Weathered Dragon
I would love to put a three-dimensional piece on the back there for the logo. and laser engraving for the actual hardwood, we can get really crazy with full designs and stuff going to theme out.
00:27:37
Mike Weathered Dragon
I want to make a pirate-themed table so bad with...
00:27:40
Jo
oh you just made my friend richard so happy
00:27:43
Mike Weathered Dragon
Oh God. Like with the post having like, like pirates in Caribbean where the crustaceans are coming out, but having all that stuff, 3d printed and just locked on.
00:27:48
Jo
Yeah. Oh.
00:27:51
Mike Weathered Dragon
Oh my God. That would be so cool. But what's a pirate table without a rum dispenser, rum bottle, rum up top, tipped upside down, taps on the side.
00:27:57
Jo
Oh, my gosh.
00:28:00
Jo
That's the thing. i love talking because it sounds like you just made that up as I was talking to you.
00:28:06
Mike Weathered Dragon
No, that's been a thing in my head for a while.
00:28:06
Jo
You know?
00:28:09
Jo
Oh, my gosh. Like, this one over here, this one over there.
00:28:10
Mike Weathered Dragon
yeah to
00:28:12
Jo
Like...
00:28:12
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah.
00:28:12
Jo
like
00:28:12
Mike Weathered Dragon
Oh, yeah.
00:28:14
Jo
Free League with Pirate Borg should be your sponsor because that table would be the perfect setting for it man.
00:28:16
Mike Weathered Dragon
That would be dope. Yep, yep. that would be yeah be
00:28:22
Jo
Like, honestly. So, aha. We've talked about the tables. We've talked about your journey. What got you into Dungeons & Dragons? Just curious.
00:28:33
Mike Weathered Dragon
When I was younger, my buddy Joe, I lived in a six-family apartment building. He's a musician, creative madman. There's just the only ways to describe this dude. He played d and d I was maybe 13, 14 at the time.
00:28:46
Mike Weathered Dragon
he's okay He's a little bit older than me. he's about
00:28:47
Jo
Yeah.
00:28:48
Mike Weathered Dragon
He's got about... four years. So when you're 13 against a 17, 18 year, you know, it's a little bit of disservice, but again, we're friends. It didn't really hang out but he's Hey, playing DD.
00:28:57
Jo
Oh.
00:28:57
Mike Weathered Dragon
You want to come? like, sure. Knew nothing about it. And then that's kind of what sucked me in He handed me the dragons of autumn, twilight, dragon lance book, read that it was all over. i was just sucked into fantasy.
00:29:07
Jo
little
00:29:09
Mike Weathered Dragon
I'm like, yeah, this is, this is the worlds I want to live in. And so that's what, that's what got me into it. Thanks, Joe.
00:29:15
Jo
that That's, that's a good, that's a good gateway.
00:29:15
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah.
00:29:18
Mike Weathered Dragon
And I still, we we still keep in touch.
00:29:19
Jo
Trace it.
00:29:21
Mike Weathered Dragon
He lives in Dallas. I'm in North Carolina. We're still like 16, 17 hours apart. We still talk all the time. is still doing stuff in the in the verse too. And so, yeah, he is still a he is still a ah good major influence in everything I'm doing.
00:29:32
Jo
That's so cool.
00:29:35
Jo
but That's an amazing. Now, was this during a time, this might be an age thing, because I remember when Sally Jesse Raphael was saying, Dozen and Dragons, your kids are killing people.
00:29:47
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah. I don't know how old you think I am but but I'm going to be 50 next year.
00:29:47
Jo
Was that during the the scare time?
00:29:52
Mike Weathered Dragon
So, yes, i did kind of live through that.
00:29:53
Jo
Oh, happy birthday then.
00:29:54
Mike Weathered Dragon
Thank you. So.
00:29:56
Jo
Yeah, so for those of you that don't know, for those who are like, wow, Dungeons and Dragons. No, it was a subversive thing, not because of anything other than, i guess, popular TV shows or popular news.
00:30:11
Jo
We're making up stories about it and saying that it was a cult and that we worship Satan and then kids were being, babies were being sacrificed. It was insane and people believed it.
00:30:21
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah, no baby sacrificing.
00:30:22
Jo
And people believed it, which is the insane part.
00:30:25
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah, that's propaganda for you.
00:30:25
Jo
And so to to play dozen and dragons back then, yeah, it was, if you ever want to watch stranger things and wonder why people are like, well, what the hell?
00:30:34
Mike Weathered Dragon
Right.
00:30:34
Jo
That was reason why. And when you said Dragonlance, you've got autographs, right?
00:30:40
Mike Weathered Dragon
Oh, yeah.
00:30:40
Jo
You've been at Gen Con.
00:30:41
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah, I have Margaret.
00:30:42
Jo
You were Gen Con this year.
00:30:43
Mike Weathered Dragon
what Well, I have Larry O'Moore art signed and Margaret Weiss, the new book, the the trilogy, the Chronicles trilogy.
00:30:47
Jo
Yep. Oh, wow.
00:30:51
Mike Weathered Dragon
I got Margaret Weiss to sign that.
00:30:51
Jo
The new trilogy.
00:30:53
Mike Weathered Dragon
so
00:30:54
Jo
that That's amazing. and Tracy was there last year or the year prior to say, because last year just was this year, I guess.
00:31:00
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yep.
00:31:00
Jo
And that was one of the reasons why i came to Gen Con originally was because of those books.
00:31:07
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah.
00:31:07
Jo
Like we we we can share a common gateway drug, I guess you want to say it.
00:31:11
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yep.
00:31:12
Jo
It's Dragonlance, right?
00:31:12
Mike Weathered Dragon
Definitely my gateway drug.
00:31:13
Jo
And And we can talk about things without even knowing each other. And that's the magic of gaming. We don't know each other, but we can talk like we're friends because we have that common background of a book that came out four four decades ago.
00:31:24
Mike Weathered Dragon
up Yep.
00:31:30
Jo
I don't even remember what year this is yet.
00:31:30
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah. 40 years ago. you know Yeah. Yeah.
00:31:33
Jo
Yeah.
00:31:34
Mike Weathered Dragon
yeah It's wild.
00:31:35
Jo
And that shows and that shows and that formed you.
00:31:35
Mike Weathered Dragon
It's wild.
00:31:39
Jo
That meeting formed you into the person making tables today.
00:31:44
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yep, it did. It absolutely did.
00:31:45
Jo
You know?
00:31:47
Mike Weathered Dragon
You know what's really wild, too?
00:31:47
Jo
History happens for all the wrong reasons. Yeah.
00:31:50
Mike Weathered Dragon
In my game room, there's a bunch of crap on the walls everywhere.
00:31:50
Jo
Oh,
00:31:52
Mike Weathered Dragon
i have a shelf with minis that I painted 30 plus years ago that I never got rid of. I kept them in a box.
00:31:59
Jo
wow.
00:31:59
Mike Weathered Dragon
And once my game room came about, dude, they're sitting on staring at them right now.
00:32:02
Jo
Yeah.
00:32:04
Mike Weathered Dragon
They're from like 30 plus years ago.
00:32:05
Jo
Wow, that's very cool.
00:32:06
Mike Weathered Dragon
So it's pretty wild.
00:32:07
Jo
And part the thing is we're done with film.
00:32:07
Mike Weathered Dragon
Why? It's like, why didn't I throw those out? It's like, I knew it's a part of me. New future. Me new. Yeah.
00:32:13
Jo
Yep. Absolutely. and And that's the brilliant of it. This is something that, you know, if you love it, let it go type thing, you had to let it go for your family and it came back to you.
00:32:25
Jo
And it came back through your family, which is even better.
00:32:26
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah. Right.
00:32:28
Jo
Right?
00:32:28
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yep.
00:32:28
Jo
It's even better.
00:32:28
Mike Weathered Dragon
Because of, yep. Because of the family. I tell my wife all the time, this is my midlife crisis.
00:32:32
Jo
Yeah.
00:32:33
Mike Weathered Dragon
Leave me alone.
00:32:36
Jo
My midlife crisis is making amazing tables. I love it. It's making a business. So I have only two further questions, Your Honor. But first, I've been having a lot of fun. So thanks for the sit down and truly talking about this.
00:32:54
Mike Weathered Dragon
Heck yeah. Thanks for having me.
00:32:54
Jo
We talked about designs. Oh, yeah. No time. Anytime.
00:32:59
Mike Weathered Dragon
Thank you.
00:33:00
Jo
We talked about the design aspect of it. We talked about the technology aspect of it. Have you ever just sat and played with the people on their new tables?
00:33:15
Jo
I'm just curious. like you I know you play at your table. Have you ever seen that first joy of someone saying, oh my God, this is my table now.
00:33:23
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yes.
00:33:23
Jo
This is our our game now.
00:33:25
Mike Weathered Dragon
Gen Con 2021 was my first official sale, like distance, what because they're in California.
00:33:30
Jo
Right. Ooh.
00:33:31
Mike Weathered Dragon
I was here. So I had to redesign the table to make it modular at the time too. Once it was done and I shipped it out there, they flew me out there to help set it up and hang out for the weekend to play the inaugural game on the system.
00:33:37
Jo
Yeah.
00:33:45
Mike Weathered Dragon
Jason and Stephanie Williams, and I still keep in touch with them to this day.
00:33:46
Jo
Oh my God. That's
00:33:49
Mike Weathered Dragon
We still talk. when if If I have to go out to California and need a place to stay, i can stay with them.
00:33:52
Jo
amazing.
00:33:55
Mike Weathered Dragon
Like, I mean, this is what what I'm talking about to develop these relationships with from something that was locked up in here that I put out there. it's It's wild. It's really cool.
00:34:05
Jo
oh That's amazing. I'm flabbergasted, really. that's God, they flew you out? that's
00:34:11
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yeah.
00:34:11
Jo
And that's the power of like the family aspect of gaming.
00:34:16
Mike Weathered Dragon
The community, know, how hardcore the community is and.
00:34:17
Jo
Really.
00:34:21
Jo
Yeah. ah ah Found family aspect of it. Very cool. Now, this question I ask all my guests. What is the one piece of advice you would give younger, I mean like teenage you, if you could?
00:34:37
Mike Weathered Dragon
If any ideas and passions that you have, just you have to keep going. It's a roller coaster. It all is in highs.
00:34:47
Jo
yeah
00:34:47
Mike Weathered Dragon
There's highs and lows associated with it. Sometimes you're like beating your head up against the wall and you're just like, what am I doing here?
00:34:50
Jo
There you
00:34:54
Mike Weathered Dragon
Do I really want to be doing this? But yeah, Their setbacks are real. Just you you will get over them and you just, you have to keep pushing.
00:35:00
Jo
go.
00:35:03
Mike Weathered Dragon
You have to keep pushing.
00:35:06
Jo
I like that. Honestly, that's... eighty And that's just not in a creative art journey. of That is life itself.
00:35:12
Mike Weathered Dragon
It is, it absolutely is.
00:35:13
Jo
It's ups and downs.
00:35:14
Mike Weathered Dragon
You just, you gotta keep pushing.
00:35:16
Jo
You have to bank them.
00:35:16
Mike Weathered Dragon
If they're just punches to the gut, you just have to take a couple deep breaths and just come back swinging even harder.
00:35:21
Jo
yeah Tighten that core up.
00:35:22
Mike Weathered Dragon
There you go.
00:35:25
Jo
That doesn't hurt.
00:35:25
Mike Weathered Dragon
yeah
00:35:26
Jo
Absolutely. That's brilliant. Mike, where can we find you? What's up next for you? What's up next for you? Where can we find you?
00:35:33
Mike Weathered Dragon
Things are gonna be quiet for a few months. March is gonna be busy. i got Long Island Tabletop, a smaller convention, but a good friend of mine is a big part of that one.
00:35:40
Jo
Yes.
00:35:42
Mike Weathered Dragon
So I like to, you know, just, it's just cool. Hang out again, smaller community, but super fun. Two weeks after that is Gary Conn.
00:35:47
Jo

00:35:48
Mike Weathered Dragon

00:36:05

00:36:12
Mike Weathered Dragon
Yes. Yes. Yep.
00:36:15
Jo
Awesome. Amazing. And that's the perfect, out honestly, Instagram, you could probably make a tick tock. If you make the table or somebody like, but Instagram, those tables pop. I swear.
00:36:27
Jo
it's the craftsmanship. If you ever want to see a true craftsman, I don't care where you're from. If you want to see a true craftsmanship, you've got to check out weather dragon tables. It's amazing how you make them.
00:36:39
Jo
