Journey from Slovenia to Siberia

Well, we were in uh romania and our slovenia our first team to depart are mel and mike at 10 49 p.m and it says fly to so siberia fly through moscow to the city of krasnoyarsk deep in the heart of siberia then travel by taxi to the structure on the 10 ruble note the soviet era krasnoyarsk hydroelectric dam

So they need to get to Moscow. And they all get there in a kind of a different way. Yeah. They all. Well, Mel calls it a turkey shoot. Yeah. Just solely connects through like Frankfurt, Munich, Sofia, Bulgaria, and Istanbul, Turkey.

Yeah. so So everybody's on a different connection to Moscow. But they want to get to the Moscow flight that arrives in the city at 5.40 a.m.

The only people who make it are the people who went through Frankfurt. So that is my Mark and Michael, Christy and Jodi, and Keisha and Jen. So they made that connection. connection Yeah.

This was surprising that we just kind of like, we didn't get any footage of them at the airport saying like, this flight is delayed or you're not going to make it. And like all that drama of that, there must've been like too much yeah in this episode that they just had to cut that out. Yeah. We didn't see any of that. It's just like the first flight lands and then they're like, some of the teams didn't make it just like as a side note. I'm like, Oh, yeah okay. Yeah.

So we don't know like exactly what time the other teams are going to arrive, but this first flight did land at 540 a.m. And these teams take taxis to this dam and it doesn't open its doors until 830.

ah written we record this podcast too late at night and my brain stops working um race and this clue says race to the church of saint in yorkenti or so to find your next clue and it doesn't seem like this church is too far away now mark and michael are the first to get there and this clue is a detour and the choices are stack or construct In a stack, the teams have to travel on foot to the riverbed where they must use a traditional traditional method to stack a pile of firewood to the satisfaction of a local expert.

And in construct, they go to on foot to a work shed where they'll find materials to build a set of traditional wood shutters. They must correctly assemble the shutters and take them to a house nearby distinguished by a sign that says repairs needed in the front and properly install the shutters so these are both just like kind of right there they're not very far yeah um mark and michael choose stack christine jody and keisha and jen also choose stack yeah this one i would probably choose construct i think i probably would have too

These are really big piles of wood. Yeah. and Even like, even if I chose stack and then I walked down there and I saw that pile of wood, I'd be like, no. Yeah. Because Keisha and Jen are like both over six feet or something like that. it's taller than them.

Yeah. So how did Mark and Michael think that they were going to do that? don't I don't know. They start doing it, these three teams, and they get pretty high and ah Mark Michael's pile falls.

And they've already, they already stacked a lot of wood. Yeah. And at that point, they decide that it's better to just switch detours. Well, because the way that it's set up is like there's a pile there already for them to see. Yeah.

yeah how it's done. So it's like, it's pretty straightforward. So like on each end, it's kind of like Jenga where it's like four going one way for, you know, like alternating directions. And then after the two end ones, it's in the middle, it's all just like stacked straight.

Yeah. So it's it's already there stacked. And when Mark and Michael's pile falls down, it also knocks down some of the example pile. And in the instructions, it says if you knock down this pile, you have to also restack that one.

So they were like, no, let's go. That'd be crazy. and That's two piles. So then they have to go. it's not that far away. Like we said, it's kind of like this little town of these little houses and go in there and they have to make these shutters With a few different pieces and some tools and stuff like that. And then find the house that says. Repairs needed. Yeah.

It's just so they're like yellow sign with like a red stripe on the front. And the top line is in Russian. And then the second line says repairs needed. So Mark and Michael's strategy is that they're going to go and find the house first that has repairs needed.

and then go make the repairs and then take it to the house. Yeah. Which is a good strategy. So then they're not like carrying the heavy shutters around town. Yeah. find it But they. Search and and search. For a long time. A long, long, long, long time.

Keisha and Jen end up finishing the detour first. And the clue says make your way to the museum of the novel The Last Bow. Caution, you turn ahead. then Phil says, this new thing this season. It's blind U-turn.

And so, yeah, k Christine and Jodi finished right after them. These two teams head to that amusement park. And in the meantime, the second set of teams had arrived on their flight and went to the dam and got the clue and are heading to this detour place.

And Keisha and Jen and Jodi and Christy choose not to U-turn anybody. Yeah. Yeah.

So then the second flight of teams are arriving and all of them choose stack. Yeah. At the beginning. and um And Mark and Michael are still looking around for the house that needs repairs.

And as they're building their piles, Mike and Mel's pile tips over and then Jamie and Kara's does. And then Kristen and Amanda's does. So Mel and Mike decide to switch detours.

And... Amanda and Chris end up switching as well a little bit later. So the only people who left are stacking are Margie and Luke and Jamie and Kara.

um And Margie and Luke finish first and then Tammy and Victor. And as Margie Luke head over to that U-turn, they decide to U-turn Chris and Amanda. And they say, we wanted to give Jamie and Kara more time to do their detour because they're really good friends with them.

and got a little alliance going. They say, like, we need to play the game. and Yeah. And Chris and Amanda are a strong team, potentially. Yeah. So...

it is what it is and people get mad about it but it was good race strategy yeah the teams at the front Keisha and Chris Keisha and Jen and Christine Jody get to the roadblock and don't it doesn't say who yeah it says who's ready to speed read so one team member must ride up to oh must ride up to a speed of 55 miles per hour while completing a three-mile bobsled course in under four minutes.

While they're doing this course, they must also look for seven letters posted along the way. Once they finish the course, they will have to unscramble the letters to correctly spell the name of the famous Russian playwright Chekhov.

So Keisha is going to do the roadblock and Christy is going to do it. And Keisha, as she goes, she finishes in under four minutes on the first time, but she missed the last letter. So she has to go again.

And I mean, obviously it only takes four minutes to do this. So it's not like a huge deal if they have to go again, but Christy finished first or finished in under four minutes and also all seven letters. Yeah.

So then Christy heads over to the word scramble thing. So they just have, they look like big scrabble tiles with the letter. And they have a pole thing that they have to slide the letters down vertically. and Yeah, so you have to like start with the last letter of the name and then go up.

And you have to spell Chekhov, which is what the letters. Which kind of spell. Yeah. I typed it out like four times and I'm like, i don't think that's right. So it's C-H-E-K-H-O-B, right? Mm-hmm. k h o b right So she doesn't know Chekhov. She doesn't even know what to start guessing with. She's like... Jodi's like, take a guess. And she's like, I wouldn't even know where to begin. Like, I have no idea.

And then when Keisha gets all the letters, she comes over and she starts guessing. And she's like, I... know that Russian letters Russian words end with OVE and stuff like that so she ends up guessing first and the clue says travel by taxi to Krasnoyark Krasnoyark wait some the name of this town um theater which is a theater of musical musical comedy to check in for the next pit stop of this leg of the race and then Christy finishes right after her

and these two teams take cabs to this theater they're dropped off in different locations they're supposed to take the main entrance into the theater and they're kind of lost running around and it ends up being team number one to check in are christy and jody so they passed up kisha and jen just on the drop off yeah and they both went on a um motorcycle yeah and then kisha and jen are team number two And they're on the mat at the same time. Like Keisha and Jen were there close enough that they checked in while Jodi and Chrissy were still on the mat.

So good job for two of our all-female teams being teams number one and two. And then this next team, we'll just fly through them because nothing interesting happened. Tammy and Victor get to the roadblock and Victor does the roadblock and he knows who Chekhov is and he gets it right away and they go to the theater and they check in his team number three.

And um Mel and Mike are like, well, just help us put these together and then we'll all go out and search and help each other. Yeah, we'll help each other out. And when Amanda and Chris show up, they kind of say that to them, too. Like, we'll all just help each other.

So they have these big shutters and as they head out, they find these ladders and they stack everything up on these ladders and they start walking around town and Mel says, it was like a caravan of idiots.

That's actually the title of the episode. Oh, really? yeah Yeah. And so they're looking around, looking around. They're really frustrated and eventually Mel actually finds the house. And it's like not that far. Yeah. I feel like it was like three houses down the street. Because Mark and Michael said that they like walked miles down one way. Yeah. And back or whatever. Like it's just at some point it's like ah they're not going to make it that hard. they're and and It is a hard race but they're not going to make things impossible.

And there's like things i see on tiktok and stuff it's like the most isolated city in the world you know it's like these people live there to basically run a factory yeah and their entire lives aren't there in that one town and it's like dark and cold yeah um well at the like at the detour spot there was kind of like some people in the background was that the detour or was that the roadblock It was at the DTour.

And yeah, like there's people just kind of like they're eating some food and like cheering and being silly. And I feel like the one lady with the bright red hair, she kind of looks like the same lady that was in the bakery last season in Russia. The one that told Nick that he's not fit.

He is not fit. This is a Russian lady that they hire to be. We're just going to move you all around the country to be in these shots. I'm sure it's not the same lady, but it reminded me of her because they had like the same kind of like red hair.

Anyway. um so like the average life expectancy in America is 78, but it's only 70 for people in Siberia. Yeah, it's probably a hard life.

Yeah. When we went to Iceland, I know this is – it's kind of related but a little bit different. But like um like hearing about the history of Iceland and just like how hard life was there because it's just like so cold. and It's probably got to be pretty similar in Siberia. But I just – I feel like Iceland is different. I feel like Iceland is optimistic and green and like happy. Yeah. And it's not as cold because the Gulf stream kind of like goes right over it. So I don't think it ever gets down to like negative 13. It is cold.

And Amanda and Chris find out that they were U-turned. And they're pretty upset about it, which I would be as well. And they're like, what can I mean people? We have been nothing but nice to everyone. How could they do this to us?

Which it would be really hard to find that you were U-turned and you already started that detour. And then you had to switch because you knocked the pile down. So you have to do that detour basically twice, like three detours. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. And they didn't suspect Margie and Luke. They suspected it was Keisha and Jen. Or joddi and Christy. Jodi and Christy. And both of them, because they were on the first flight, they were like, we're far enough ahead that we don't feel like we need to do this. So we're not going to U-turn.

And they chicken is team number four.
