Season 13 Finale!: The Amazing Race Season 13, Episode 11

It's the final leg of Season 13! And it's a close race between 2 of the teams! The 3rd team has some really bad luck with a taxi that puts them out of the running.
This was a great final leg, complete with a good memory challenge, and extra clues they have to find before the final mat that keeps in interesting!

we were in Moscow last and Nick and star are the first team to depart at 10 56 PM. And the clue says fly to your final destination city, Portland, Oregon.

Teams must travel 5,000 miles to Portland, Oregon. Once there, they must make their way to this adventure camp to find their next clue. And there's a big gap in between teams. Andrew and Dan leave at 228 and Ken and Tina at 330.

Yeah. So I think that detour, I mean, I think a lot of things made a big difference on the last leg, but I think Nick and star did their new detour really quickly. Yeah. The ride, the rails. Yeah. And when Ken and Tina didn't get their clue to tell them to go to the pit stop and they had to go back and search for it. It looks like that took them whole hour to do that. Yeah. Cause they were right with Andrew and Dan on the mat yeah and then had to go back. So.

to head back to the US and yeah be home. And they all just go to the airport to find flights. Nick and Star got on the internet. Did you see the prices of those flights they were looking at? They were like $4,200. Really? Yeah. I didn't notice that. It was just like a like an Expedia website. They were doing some research. I was like, ooh, yikes.

yeah I don't know if that was for like all four flights or if that was per flight. yeah because Because they have to buy for yeah themselves and their two crew members. yeah so Interesting.

But a last-minute flight, international flight, is probably pretty expensive anyways. From Moscow to Portland? My guess was that we were going to a city on the east coast, and I was wrong. We're going to the northwest.

And while they're waiting, they have quite a while to wait for this flight. So they're all three teams find an internet spot and do a little bit of research. Yeah. Looking up like what this, it's the Tilikum Tilikum Adventure Park. So they're seeing like what kind of stuff you can do there yeah and kind of just getting ready for the lake. Yep.

they arrive in Portland, they all get off the plane and go and get their cabs and start racing to this adventure park. And Andrew and Dan's driver doesn't even know like where it is. Yeah. And he doesn't even know the name of the town that it's in. Yeah, it's kind of like on the outskirts of Portland and like Newberg or new. Yeah, Newberg. Yeah.

So he must be new to the area because he struggles. Yes. So Andrew borrows the taxi driver's phone to like call the place that they're going and get directions. Yeah.

And that's crazy to think about like everybody has a smartphone now. Yeah. So this was filmed in 2008. The iPhone came out in 2007. So it was kind of like when people were starting to like make the transition over to smartphones, but nobody gets like, you will not find a taxi driver that will get lost now. Yeah.

Cause they can just put it on their phone. Yeah. And there was that one taxi driver last episode in Russia that had a GPS and he was like, yeah they were like, Oh, he has a GPS. yeah That was like the high-end technology at that time. So the first team to arrive to this um adventure camp are Canantina and the clue there is a detour and it says high and dry or low and wet.

High and dry, teams must climb 30 feet up a tree, traverse a 40-foot log, and then leap through the air to retrieve one half of the next clue. If either team member falls off the log without grabbing the clue, they must start from the beginning.

And then low and wet is teams choose a floating log bridge and walk 850 feet across the water to the clue waiting on the shore. And both of these are first come first serve. Canatina pick high and dry. That's probably what I would have chosen. yeah Because 40 feet's not very long. And what was the other 850 feet across like logs yeah in a body of water? Yeah. So I would choose that one too.

and they can start to get there right after them and they choose high and dry as well and we know that Tina is scared of heights and so she's kind of having a hard time but she does it but the way Nick climbs this tree he looked like a spider monkey yeah he literally like ah so it's a tall tree and it has these metal like wrong like kind of steps. Yeah. On two sides. And he literally was flying up that thing. Like he wasn't like climbing like a ladder one by one. I know it was like he literally scaled that tree. I was like, Oh my gosh. Yeah. It was really fast. So he made up a lot of time there. They actually finished a detour before Ken and Tina do. And that clue says traveled by taxi to the bridge of the gods.

then Ken and Tina finish and they get the clue and they're heading to the bridge as well. Tina and Star started almost at the same time. Yeah. And Tina was wasteful. Her helmet kept falling off and she said it was like choking her and then she was afraid of the hides and Ken was like, come on, come on. And she's like, don't yell at me. Yeah. She's already being very like,

short with him. yeah Her helmet thing was really annoying. Yeah, that is annoying if it won't stay on. And she tried to take it off and couldn't get it off. It wasn't tight enough in the first place or something. It was just, yeah, that's really annoying. But it slowed her down a lot. And um so these two teams are racing to this bridge.

And they were both gone before Andrew and Dan even arrive. Yeah. So they, it looks like Nick and Star ah are ahead, but their driver passes the off ramp to this bridge or something and Ken and Tina don't. So they get there first. So Tina does the zip line first and again, she's scared of heights, but she actually seems like she enjoys it as she's doing it. Yeah. She's like, this is awesome. And then Ken does it and he does it like backwards and upside down.

I'm like, are you allowed to do that? And then they can start get there right after and do it. And then the meantime, Andrew and Dan get to the detour finally, and do this. So when I was thinking of this, like, cabs make a big difference on the final lake all the time. And it would be like,

is So they should have like found a cab driver and been like, do you know where this is? Yeah. Why would you say yes or no even get in a cab driver that doesn't know where to go? Like it would take a little bit longer initially at the airport when you're asking different cab drivers if they know where something is. And then instead of just wasting all this time with a cab driver who doesn't know where anything is, like they should have asked more. Yes. Which is like, I think,

especially the last leg, like it's really important that you're like, and or and everybody speaks English. So it's not like you have the language barrier. So you should, you have to find somebody that knows where they're going. Yeah.

and They said a few times, they're like, we should have got another driver. We should have got another driver. But once they get out to this place, like they have to keep that driver because there's no taxis out there. So then they have to use him to come back, too. And he struggles to find the bridge. And they yeah and they also, he's going so slow. He's going like 40. He is going, yeah. And Andrew's like, can you please go 70 at least? Can you get in the left lane and go 70? Can you not go 50? And it shows his speedometer. And he's going forty like 45. Yeah.

In that moment, I would be freaking out. yeah I'd be like, this is... I'm sorry, sir, but you are literally costing us a million dollars. Yes. And wouldn't he be like, oh, this is important because there's a camera guy in my seat. like Obviously, this is like a show. This is legit. I was just going to say, wasn't there a time in like season five when was it Colin and Christie or some, somebody called ahead for the final leg destination city and said, you will like, you need to book me your driver who knows the area the best. Yeah. That sounds right. Meet me and they at the airport at this time. And they did. And that was like really smart. Yeah. I wonder why people haven't utilized that since, or are they not allowed to? I don't know.

Yeah, it like some of those little things, like it's a I think it eventually changes where they like can't pay the taxi driver to like follow at some point. So like little little things change that they don't really tell us that they just like stop doing. Yeah. And we don't know like all of the little rules. Actually, that will come up at the end when we are finished. like Some of the the rules and penalties that we like see for the first time in this like in the trivia for the season, I'll tell you. so I guess maybe they did make that a rule because if that was the case, everybody should do that every every time. like yeah anyways,

So, Canatina land on this little island thing from the zip line and the clue there says, you've come a long way, how much do you remember? So, this is like the final trivia game of the season. The memory task, yeah.

So they it says, choose a game board with 10 game pieces, each representing the leg of the race, working in numerical order, revealing a symbol underneath, like route info, roadblock, detour, pit stop. enter So then you enter the field containing 150 amazing race clue boxes and find the picture corresponding with the symbol. Once the team finds all 10 correct pictures, they'll receive their next clue. So it's like a big board.

Yeah, and it's like a pyramid. So at the bottom left is one, two, three, four is the bottom row, and then five, six, seven is the second row up, eight, nine, and then 10 is at the top. They pull off one and it's route info, route info. So it's like the blue route info that you see when they open the clue. That one would be hard because they get a few. Yeah.

throughout the leg. Yeah. So this, yeah, I would feel like this would be really hard, but it's supposed to be the root info of their first leg, which was Brazil. And they had to take that coffee cart full of supplies, like on that cobblestone street. yeah And so that's the picture that they're looking for.

And Nick and Starr do the zipline and they get there pretty close after. So they're, these two teams are like neck and neck. yeah And like, there's a big, a large field on this island and there's 150 clue boxes just standing there. So they have to open the roadblock or detour or route info thing of that leg and then run out into the field and look into every single clue box and find that picture.

and then run back and put it on. And then when they put it on, it will do a green light if it's wrong or not yeah or right. That's nice because then they don't get to the end and then they're like, well, which one is wrong? Yeah. So that's helpful. Yeah. But I wish they would do, I like that better. Yeah. it Kind of like ups the stakes a little bit. Yeah.

So the, like, Ken and Tina get the first one. And the second one is the t detour of leg two, which was beach, beach it, which boats. Yeah. Which is the boat. So they brought up onto the land and put the logs. Yeah.

And um number three was the roadblock of that leg, which was like the wrestling, the fighting chilidas in Bolivia. And number four was the pit stop in New Zealand, which was like, it's like a field of sheep. Yeah.

So at this point, Ken and Tina were ahead yeah up until number number four, at which point Nick and star have now caught up yeah and then kind of pass them. So it's, it's almost like Ken and Tina are doing double the amount of work because Nick and star, I think you have to stay with your partner. I don't think you can split up and just look at all 150.

but like Nick will open one and then Star will open one. Like they're like going fast and Tina, she keeps saying, don't close it until I see it. yeah Don't close the lid until I see it. Don't close it so fast. I need to look at it. Like she doesn't trust enough him to let him even look at a picture.

like in So literally they're taking twice as long cause both of them have to look at both at the picture. And it's, I think that slows them down a lot. Just that little thing. But also like if you see where one is and then you know that it's going to come up later to know, to know which box it's in yeah is helpful. So i I don't blame her for not wanting to or for wanting to see. Yeah. But it's like he could look at some and you can look at some and he'd be like, Oh, I remember that picture over here.

And she could be like, I remember that picture over here, like Nick and Starr are doing. yeah But she has to look at every single one because like she won't trust she doesn't trust Ken enough to. So when they get to the fourth one, Ken and Tina get that one wrong because they pick out, it's supposed to be the pit stop of New Zealand, but they pick something else. And they didn't recognize that that symbol was a pit stop mat. And she's like, is that the pit stop sign? and So they finally figured that out.

And then they also get messed up on number six. So number six is the route info from Lake six. I don't even remember where India, I think so at the ambassador hotel. And Ken says, I bet that's the hotel. And Tina's like, no, it's not.

She doesn't, so she's so just like her answers are final. And that's how she's been the whole season, but she's very much like this at this point. And it's bothering me because he kind of is just thinking out loud. Maybe that, I think that's probably the hotel. No, it's not.

he can't even argue with her. Like he can't even, you know, and so they get the wrong picture and then go back and get the hotel. Yeah. And she doesn't even be like, Oh, you were right. Yeah. Um, so at this point, meanwhile, Dan and Andrew are on their way to the zip line. So they have finished the detour their way behind. There's no hope for them. no And I think we knew that. And honestly, it really wasn't their fault. They really had a bad driver, but I wonder if they, all three teams were doing this task at the same time, like how it would have worked out. Cause like once Dan and Andrew get there.

Cause I assume that there's three of each picture, yeah just kind of like random. So two of the three of the picture that they need is already gone. So they have a way harder time at the end too. So. Yeah. Cause I think that they say that when they finally arrive, when Ken and Tina and Nick and Star are already gone, like I think some of the boxes are like empty. Yeah. That are closer to the front. They have to travel. Yeah. So they have to go to the further ones. Yeah.

And it says travel downtown by taxi to the Portland building and search the area for the green dinosaur, which is located across the street in the standard Plaza to find their next clue. So it's like, they don't know that it's at the standard Plaza though. It's just in so the area for the green dinosaur. And then it says something like it's standard issue.

which does help them find yeah the standard building yeah once they get there and realize. So it's like a dinosaur statue that has like decorations or like an art installation or something like that across the street from the Portland building in the window, like a big window. So it's inside a building. Um, so Nick and star head that way and Ken and Tina are just right behind them. And Andrew and Dan get to the picture task and then we don't see anything else of them until the pit stop, so we won't worry about them. And Nick and Star's driver seems to know exactly where that building is, and they get dropped off first. Both of them do, because yeah the cabs pass each other a couple of times on the way, so it's like so close. Yeah, Ken and Tina's driver catches up to them. They're passing back and forth. It seems like they take a little bit of a different way to get to this building, and Nick and Star are dropped off first, and they see that

Nick sees the standard building. He's like, Oh, that's the standard building. And then star will seize the window. She's like, Oh, there's the dinosaur. So they run in and grab the clue. And it says make your way on foot to the Alder street to Alder street and search among the food carts for the one from Russia. Well, it says find the country of your last pit stop. Yeah.

So they have to remember that it's Russia, but I'm sure that was like when Phil says it, when Phil says it to us, he says, and find the one from Russia. But when they read it on the clue, it says, find the cart where your last pit stop was. Yeah. Um, so when Nick and star are leaving the dinosaur, they see Ken and Tina and they're like, we can't let him see this CS. We want them to know where it is. And they are kind of walking around the area.

and they go into the city hall and ask the security guy where that dinosaur is, and they find it. And so right now, Nick and Star are making their way on foot to these carts in Canintina as well. And it seems like they're both directed to Alder Street, but from Alder Street, they need to be directed to these carts from there. But Nick and Star do find the cart first, and it says, travel on foot to the place where the magic is in the hole.

Yeah. powell city weird i guess yeah safe key portland weird Powell's City of Books in Portland holds the esteemed title of being the largest independent bookstore in the world, spending an entire city block with over 1 million new and used books across multiple floors. It's a bibliophile's paradise. Have you been there? Yeah. OK.

Um, Portland was named on a coin toss. The city's name was reportedly determined by a simple coin toss in 1845. The business partners from Boston and Portland couldn't agree on what to name the city. So they flipped a coin and they got, so it could have been Boston, Oregon. Yeah. And it has the second most breweries in the U S with over 70 breweries. Milwaukee, the first Denver, Denver.

So yeah, I visited Portland. I went to Portland for my 30th birthday, just like on a solo trip and went to Powell's book store and voodoo donuts. And like this area that they're running around right now, that's like where I was staying. That was where my where I stayed.

One of the dirtiest cities I've ever been to. And I didn't walk around at night in this city and like it was just not my favorite yeah there was like the bookstore was really cool and a few other things i went to the the japanese garden was really cool so if you do go to portland do those things but my favorite thing was i did it like a wine tour because there's actually like a lot of um vineyards around here

And that was the most interesting part. So outside of Portland. Yeah, outside of Portland. And that was fascinating the wine tour because they were telling their tell they tell you about like the way Portland or like the west coast of Oregon was formed was because a glacier came from Canada like all the way I mean, know over millions of years and brought all this nutrients to the area there. And that's why they grow such good and unique grapes and stuff like that. But anyways, yeah, so.

The first time I went there wasn't that bad, but the second time I went to Seattle, I was like, and it was only like,

Okay, well cool. So we are in Portland. Yeah. What are we doing? We're going to Alder Street. Yeah. And they're finding the Russian food truck. And so Nick and Star find it. Oh yeah. And we said they're supposed have to, they're supposed to go to Voodoo Donut. So they just like start yelling. Yeah. Where's the magic in the hole? Where's the magic in the hole?

And this lady walking by- And if you're just looking around, it's like, what are these people yelling? This lady walking by with a cane and they're like, do you know where the magic in the hole is? And she's like, no. And then this guy like behind him who was like, that's Voodoo Donuts. yeah And he tells them how to get how to get there. And then Ken and Tina get there and they're like, doesn't anyone who know where magic in the hole is? And that same lady was like, it's yeah, I know where it is. I know. And then they're like, has somebody else been here? And she's like, yeah.

definitely kept her calm. And at this point he's kind of just like, we're there, I don't even worry about keeping calm. I feel like there was a lot of clues too. I expected the memory challenge to be like the last thing. That's what I thought it was gonna be. And then they had to go two more, three more places. Yeah. Two more places. Which is good. No, three more places. I like that because it gives people more of a chance to like, you know, show their skills and do an actual race instead of a taxi competition.

They're like yeah blowing whistles and yeah, Ken, like a taxi drive drives by and has their window down. He's like, I'll pay you $50 to get out and give us your taxi. And the driver's like, this is a customer dude. Drives away. Yeah. If somebody offered me that if I wasn't in a rush, I'd be like, okay. yeah

And I don't think they were expecting to win. So no, they were like, we didn't even expect to get to the final three. We were just happy to be here. Yeah. So I did predict Nick and star to win from the very beginning.
