Hello everyone, welcome back to the amazing rewatch. We are Jessica and Sadie and we are covering season 13 episode 5. So last episode we flew from South America to New Zealand and it did a leg there. There was a fast forward and there was a hard detour and the teams were really spread out. What was the detour? There was the the kiwi juice and the bike, the wind bike. That's right. So we are, um, Canantina did the fast forward in the last episode. So they are the first to depart and they are departing at 6 0 3 a.m. And it says fly 5,600 miles to Sim Rep. Phil said rep. Yeah. Cambodia is spelled S I E M R E A P Cambodia.

Make your way to the roadside gas pumping station to find your next clue. They have $98 for this leg of the race. So I predicted Indonesia and Cambodia is pretty close. Yeah. And Ken says they have probably like a three hour drive to Auckland where they're going to go to the import the airport there to fly to Cambodia. Yeah.

basically together. like we air you know Traveling to a new country does equalize a lot, but when Kenantina left at 6.03 AM, if you're not leaving in the middle of the night and have to wait for the airport to open and all of that, then you have more chances of getting out of there before other teams. Yeah, and it's interesting because There's, they said there's only two flights leaving New Zealand to Cambodia that day. One is at 1225 and one is at 455. And it ends up being both of those flights have a layover in Singapore where they meet up yeah and fly to Cambodia together.

So Terence and Sarah and Ken and Tina make the 1225 flight. And then um everybody makes the 455 flight except for Aja and Ty. Andrew you and Dan were really close to not making it. yeah They were at the travel agency in the airport. Yeah, it was like a flight center, just kind of like an office where you can go in and look at flights for any airline.

And the travel agent like called the airline and asked if they can make it and the airline said no. And so Andrew and Dan were like, but Dan is the one who dan works for airlines or whatever. He's like, let's go to the the counter the counter and ask them. So they ran there and asked them and they they got them on. Yeah. So I was smart to go double check and Yeah so the game for them Andrew and Dan's relationship is really interesting because we talked about last time how Andrew really stepped up and basically like got them through that leg ah and he and was whining yeah he's kind of disappointed in Dan and he feels like Dan has an attitude of like he's in charge and he knows more than Andrew and he makes the decisions and so

And Tony and Dallas get a driver that doesn't really know where to go and takes them to a hotel originally. originally She like moved the microphone away from her face. I was gonna like have a hiccup and then I moved it. And Kelly and Christy's driver takes them to just a random gas station. So Nick and Star end up getting there first and the clue says, choose a truck and use a hand pump to fill the tank with 25 liters of diesel to get your next clue.

And so they it's just like a clear cylinder and then like a red crank that they have to you have to spin it pretty fast for it to get like the to pull the pump or pull the fuel out of the tank and then it fills the cylinder and then they open the valve and it runs down a hose into the gas tank. And they have to do it five times to get the 25 liters. Yeah, so most of them don't really struggle with it except for

Andrew and Dan when they get there. Yeah, they really struggle. Yeah, Andrew's just kind of like Going really slow and Dan's like do it faster. And he's like, I don't think that makes a difference but it does. Yeah, and so Andrew He looks he just like is walking around like looking at the other teams like seeing what they're doing and he just like looks Like a little boy. I don't know. Yeah, they kind of I feel like they rely on a lot of people yeah of other teams yeah to see what to do. yeah um But when they can start finish first, they get the clue that says, make your way by the truck, like get in the truck and make your way to the harbor called Tonle Sap, which is on Southeast Asia's largest lake. Then you'll take them. It's called Siem Reap Harbor. Oh, on Tonle Sap, which is the name of the lake. And then take a marked boat to the floating restaurant called Coe on Deck. On Deck.

So all these teams start passing them. The teams get to this harbor and get on their marked boats. And Andrew and Dan are the last team in this group to get to the marked boats. So they're racing in these boats across the lake to this restaurant on the water. And right as they're about to get there, Terrence and Sarah's boat breaks down.

Yeah, it's like the engine flooded. Yeah. And he's like, hand me that stick and then just starts like pushing themselves the rest of the way. Yeah. And Sarah like doesn't even try to help. Village Life, um the teams have to use their boats to pick up three items, which are a set of teeth from the dentist, a doll from the tailor, and a basketball from a floating basketball court. And they also must make one basket. And then deliver these items to a man on the dock to get the clue.

And then village work is take the boats to the fishing grounds, wade into waist deep water and search among the fishing traps for two traps that are filled with fish, then deliver the traps back to the dock and transfer the fish to some baskets. So this place that they're at is like a floating village. Like everything, people live on boats. All of the stuff is just like on boats or like floating.

buildings so like the basketball port court is a floating basketball court and like there's little kids in these like little rafts and there's a man just like swimming in the water next to a boat like it's very impoverished and Kelly and Christy do point that out and they're like we just can't believe like the way some people live yeah and And then they're also like, I can't believe those kids parents are letting them in that water. Yeah. i I mean, if they grew up being around the water and they're just so used to it, it's probably not even a big deal. But like my kids, there's no way I let them. I know. Because I just I'm scared of water and they don't swim very good. But it seriously, it would be like their playground. Yeah. It'd be like their backyard. That's their life that they know. It'd be like sending your kids outside to play. Yeah. That'd be really crazy.

It seems like it, well, they seemed pretty equal.

And when they get out of the boats, Dallas is like, oh my gosh, the mud, like it is just like mud under their feet. And he's like, what if there's crocodile or snakes? Yeah. And those fish look so disgusting. Yeah.

Yeah. So well, this place specifically it's, um, anchor watt is a Hindu Buddhist temple. So it started out as a Hindu temple. Then it was transformed into a Buddhist temple. It was built in the 12th century and, um, it's like the 1100s. Yeah. Which is, that's crazy. It covers 402 acres. Um, it is the largest like worship.

It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. um And this is what's depicted on the Cambodian flag, which is only flagged to have a building on their flag. A country in Southeast Asia on the Indochinese Peninsula is bordered by Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. It's officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia. It has a tropical climate and is rich in wildlife and biodiversity. It has a population of 17 million people. The capital and the most populous city is Phnom Penh, Penh, followed by Siem Reap. In 802 AD, a d ah man his It's hard to say his name. Jaya Varam II declared himself king and he united the warring tribes and marked the beginning of the Khmer Empire. It's K-H-M-E-R, Khmer. And then in 18, so it was an empire for a really long time. And then in 1863, it became a French colony. And then it was occupied by the Japanese during World War II. After that, in 1953, Cambodia declared independence from France. And during the Vietnam War, this country was really involved. And there was also a civil war within the country during the 60s.

So there was a coup in the 70s which installed a US-aligned republic and took over the communist group and there was a lot of internal warring and bad things happening during this time. So finally in 1991 peace was restored by the Paris Peace Accords and they established new constitution and a general election In 1997, there was another coup and it made the Prime Minister Hun Sen come to power and the Cambodian People's Party. So Cambodia is a constitutional monarchy in a multi-party state. It is part of the United Nations, um but the United Nations designates Cambodia as a least developed country. and So it's

I know like I have heard about like some of the turmoil from the 60s and 70s like isn't there like a bunch of land mines or Yeah, I think the a lot of U.S. troops were based in Cambodia to fight over in Vietnam. And just, I mean, that whole ah whole war just devastated that part of the... Yeah. There's this movie called The Killing Fields, I think that's what I was thinking of. Which is a 1984 British biographical drama based on the experience of two journalists.

They'll stand on a specific spot and thumb thump their chest to make it echo and then pick up the next clue. So the clue is just like these like stone, like these square stones that have faces carved into them and then the clue is carved onto to the back.

Yeah, it's just it's a really cool building like kind of like Like the top looks like the top of an egg Yeah of all the spires and there's like four on the edges and then one in the or four on the corners and then one big one in the middle but lots of there it's it's like there's like a wall around the outside and there's like big steps that go up in the middle and so it is a lot to try to search through if you don't know where you're going especially. Yeah so it was abandoned for over 150 years until the Europeans discovered it in the 16th century. Interesting. So at the time when it was covered in vines and trees and stuff it might have looked like the jungle book but yeah. So Nick is the first to find it and the the clue that's printed on the back says take this sculpture relief. I don't what does that mean? Sculpture relief.

And then at this point, Andrew and Dan arrive at Angkor Wat and Andrew is going to do the roadblock.

And then what's next? Um, so did you say Ken and Tina were four? No, not yet. Oh yeah. Yep. Okay. So Ken and Tina are team number four and Kelly and Christie are number five. And when he tells them your team number five, they're like five. Yeah. Like they were surprised. Are you happily surprised or not in a good way? Because when they were in their tuk tuk, they're like, we need to be team number one and show them that we are a team to be reckoned with. But i'm like what would made you think that you were in first place? You said all, you saw all these people pass you on the detour. Yeah.

Yeah. So I'm like, what was that surprise for? it was, I was wondering the same thing. Yeah. So then Andrew and dad Dan are team number six and that means Aja and Ty are team number seven and they are eliminated. Which I was hoping this would be a non elimination league because they did really good on this. Like they didn't make any mistakes and they got along really well. yeah um So it'd been interesting to see how far behind they actually were if they were not eliminated, but Yeah, they are eliminated. And I don't know if we mentioned it earlier in the episode, but on the way to the airport, Terrence got pulled over.

We did not. Yeah, so he got pulled over when they were driving in to the airport in New Zealand. They said he was going 117 and 100 kilometers per hour. And Phil says at the end of this episode, because Terrence and Sarah were stopped for speeding, they received a 30 minute penalty that did not affect the outcome of this leg, but will be applied to the start of the next leg.

Yeah, I was wondering that um like when he got pulled over and and it said he got a speeding ticket. Yeah. um I was like, oh, because I know that they're not allowed to go over the speed limits. So what's going to happen? I hope that they actually give him a penalty. Yeah. And they did. So we'll see if that. I forgot about it, though, because it happened like at the beginning of the episode. And then at the very end, I was like, oh, ah yeah. Yeah. So we'll see if that affects the place that they leave next episode.

And Ty says that he's going to move to l LA to be with Aja.
