Podcast Updates and Co-host Absence

00:00:00
Speaker
Welcome back everyone. I don't even know if that recorded because I might have went too early. Welcome back everyone to the Popcorn Podcast. I'm Tommy Cresta, host and creator of the Popcorn Podcast. My co-host though, Ryan Ferran, is not here with me today. He is down the shore still working. And yes, I know it's been a while since we put out an episode.
00:00:17
Speaker
And that's something we're going to we're going to stop doing. It's just been super busy in life recently. Work of me starting school, going back into school for summer classes and Ryan moving down the shore. So it takes it takes us a little bit to get back in the rhythm. But once we get back in our rhythm and all the shows up, I have friends of mine calling. Yo. Look, you're on the podcast finally.

Introducing Guest Smith and Future Plans

00:00:45
Speaker
Yeah.
00:00:47
Speaker
They don't know if they can hear you. Um, this for everyone who doesn't know this is my friend Smith He's in the army with me and he has been begging to come on the podcast So I decided to give him his moment of glory today but No, no one cares for you, but I'm gonna hang up on you now so I can finish recording my episode Oh, thanks Mitty You still bitch
00:01:18
Speaker
Um, uh, yeah, that's Smith. He's one of my buddies from the army. I do want to get some of my friends more onto the podcast. Like, like the show was when I first started it. But yeah, uh, once we get back into our rhythm and once the boys comes out, uh, house of the dragon and the bear, we will be doing our weekly episodes, weekly reviews of those shows.

Upcoming Show Reviews

00:01:38
Speaker
But it's just been weird right now. Not a ton of movies have come out, but enough that I have some things I want to talk about. Excuse me. Um,
00:01:47
Speaker
But, yeah, enough that I wanted to come on to a solo episode and talk about a couple of the films I've watched recently. Do I hear someone tapping on my door? No. But yeah. And what else has been going? Yeah, I've been working on the short film tires, tire, tirelessly, yeah, tirelessly on the new short film, the hard one I've been writing. Ryan's been huge with writing on this one, so is our friend Ian.
00:02:17
Speaker
And yeah, I'm very excited to eventually get to actually film the project, put it out there, show you guys. This is a project I've wanted to do for a long time. Are is my favorite genre filmmaking. And yeah, so I'm really excited

Short Film Project Insights

00:02:32
Speaker
about that. But besides that, just been really working on school, going to work, trying to finish up my military career as of right now. And yeah, I think that's it. But now actually moving into the movie side of things and what films I've been watching.
00:02:47
Speaker
I'm gonna get my letterbox app open. Where are the films I've seen see recently? Recent activity. Wow, I've really not done anything on the letterbox recently. Sort of why.
00:03:18
Speaker
No. There we go.

Mad Max Fury Road Review

00:03:22
Speaker
OK, so what I've watched recently, I mean, we saw the fall guy, but we did a full review of that in a violent nature, which I wanted to save until after we got my notes. And I guess I didn't I guess I didn't letterbox these movies. Yeah, we did Mad Max Fury Road. I went and saw. I really, really enjoyed it. I thought the.
00:03:44
Speaker
Fight choreography, the driving, the car sequences. Anya Taylor-Joy is a superstar. Chris Hemsworth is proving once and again that he is still probably what I think is one of the top tier actors to come out of the MCU. No, he's still technically in the MCU. But yeah, I really enjoyed Mad Max. I don't think it's as good as Fury Road. I don't think it's going to ever be passed. But I get furious. I still give an 88. I still thought it was really, really well done.
00:04:13
Speaker
And yeah, there's some cool some cameos in there. There's some really cool Easter eggs towards the fandom of Mad Max, which was really cool Moving on from that

Stranger Chapter One Reevaluation

00:04:23
Speaker
movie. I actually want to go back and talk about was the stranger chapter one So when I first saw it even 50 something I now say it twice more with other people and I'm dropping it down to a 38 it
00:04:37
Speaker
I think my review was different the first time I saw it just because I was so excited to finally have a new Strangers movie after waiting so long since Pray, uh, Strangers 2, Pray of Night, Pray at Night, they Pray at Night, something like that. Um, so I think I was just so excited. And I let my emotions, uh, get the best of me in my review. But now looking back on it, it's definitely not a good horror movie and probably the weakest, it is definitely the weakest of the franchise. Um, which is hard because it is the first film of a trilogy.
00:05:06
Speaker
But yeah, I wasn't a huge fan now looking back on in some of the decisions that they made I didn't like the costumes as much as time I still thought Madeline, uh, oh My god the girl from Riverdale the main actress she was still really good. She was probably the best part of the movie As I said Furiosa given 88 that I went saw if if was genuinely it's getting ripped apart a little bit by critics right now I give it a 62 it is a sweet sweet movie with a pretty nice twist Ryan Reynolds was
00:05:34
Speaker
is an enjoyable character. The little girl in If, she was tremendous.

Thoughts on 'If' and Post-Credit Scene

00:05:38
Speaker
She was genuinely a great, gave a great performance for a kid actor. So it was really nice. It was such a sweet movie. And being an older brother and having an imaginary friend when I was little, it was a really nice movie. And I love, you gotta stay for the post credit scene. I'm telling you, it is worth every second.

Celebrating 'The Crow's' 30th Anniversary

00:05:58
Speaker
I went and saw The Crow, the original one. It was back in theaters for the 30th anniversary.
00:06:02
Speaker
The movie's awesome, it's so good. The gothic grunge tone of it, Brendan Lee giving career performance for anyone, especially him, because sadly he passed away on the set. But that was a career-defining performance. And it was so cool to get to talk to Ernie Hudson about it, and then get to see him on screen, like, I've talked to him. But the crow, the original crow's so good, and I think,
00:06:28
Speaker
One of my biggest issues was that people booed the new Crow trailer before the Crow. When the director said nothing but wanting to honor what Alex Porias, the director of the original, and Brendan Lee did for the first one, they want to honor Brendan. They want to honor the original one. They want to pay homage to those movies, not make a new thing where it's like, oh, you know that version? F that.
00:06:51
Speaker
they want to make something that can honor and stand with that. And I don't know why people have such a hard time with that. It's been 30 years. I want to see a new Crow movie. That's what I want. And I really am excited for this new one. I don't think it can live up to the hype of the first one. First one is genuinely an all-time superhero movie. All time. I guess independent film you can call it. Based off of the graphic novel that wasn't
00:07:18
Speaker
Anything crazy. And it's just it's so good. And I really do think Scar's going to do a great job. Ernie Hudson even talked about it. He thinks Bill's going to do a great job. I think the movie's going to be good. He's excited to watch it, he said. But again, he grew me. It's. Brandon Lee is the crow. He is Eric Draven and Bill Skarsgard is going to try and honor that and make do the best he can. I hate that people just won't give the movie a chance. That's my little spew on the crow. I like to talk about this with my dad quite often.

In a Violent Nature: A Horror Review

00:07:47
Speaker
Yeah, now moving on to the main point of this episode, and that is In a Violent Nature, the new horror film by IFC and Shutter. It was directed by Chris Nash, and so far it's actually made $2.2 million dollars in the box office. It's cinematographer, Pierce Dirks, and it's produced by Shannon Hanmer and Peter Kalpolsky.
00:08:05
Speaker
This film is about when a group of teens take a locket from a collapsed fire tower in the woods, they unwittingly resurrect the riding corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60 year old crime. The undead killer soon embarks on a bloody rampage to retrieve the stolen locket, methodically slaughtering anyone who gets in his way.
00:08:25
Speaker
So, this film, straight from the start, the review so far is 6.2 out of town IMDB, 69 on Metacritic, 67 on Google with an 85% critic score, on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 45 audience score.
00:08:46
Speaker
Okay. Uh, but the critic consensus as a single-mindedly focus on mayhem is demonic monster in a violent nature serves up. Let's just leave disgusting feast for gore aficionados. I really liked it. I know some people, I see that people don't like it, which is kind of shocking to me because I thought it was really good. I mean, this is up there for one of my top movies of the year so far. Like what I think is one of the best movies of the year.
00:09:14
Speaker
I have it above Furioso. So I mean, maybe I'm in the minority on this one. I see where people are coming from. A friend of mine, Sam, she did not like this movie. She said that it was too much for her. It was very gory in your face. And she just won the movie to end. Well, for me, I was like, please don't end yet. Like I'm enjoying myself.
00:09:35
Speaker
And I thought it did exactly what I wanted it to do. It didn't go over the top with any idea. It was straightforward. It was a pretty simple idea and had a simple ending. That's how you make a good horror movie. You don't have to have some crazy third act epic battle. It doesn't have to be like that. It just can be simple.
00:09:52
Speaker
And this movie is simple, it is straight to the point, it's in the title, it's in a violent nature. It is violent, it is quick, gory, disturbing horror. And there's a scene, there's a shot from in the trailer, the girl is doing yoga and he is walking up to her. If you have trouble with gore and you're watching this movie, you might want to close your eyes for the next two minutes when he's walking up to her.
00:10:16
Speaker
There's a scene in Saw 10 where the girl has to cut her leg open with a wire saw and then suck the bone marrow. That's bad. This is up there. This is one of the most disturbing scenes ever. But besides that, I'm not a gore porn person.
00:10:31
Speaker
Like I don't love gore like that, but this didn't feel like that to me. This was just violent. Like this. These weren't gore like he wasn't like the terrifiers to me are gore porn. This was just violence. Like this guy has a mission and he's going to complete it in his way, which is just, as they say, methodically slaughter anyone that gets in his way.
00:10:52
Speaker
But yeah, I really, really liked the movie. I thought, oh, what I say his name was. I want to give this dude all the credit. Pierce Dierks. It is one of the most well shot and beautiful movies of the year so far. I mean, it's stunning. The movie is a horror movie from the wall. Actually, so far on the Google one, like out of the one on five star rating, you can give it as a one point five, one point nine. That is
00:11:21
Speaker
as wild, especially with the square I gave it. But I genuinely, notice, um, I genuinely love this movie. I give it an 89. I'll say it and I'm going to stick with it. I really, really love this movie. I love the idea of a horror movie from the killer's perspective, which is so cool. We have pure Starks. It was weird because a lot of the movies just following him, cause you know, in horror movies that they walk around the woods. Jason does it.
00:11:51
Speaker
It is so peaceful when he's walking around not killing anyone like the views, the sounds, the birds, the sound of the sound of walking in the woods. It's all just gorgeous. And there's a shot. It's in the sunset, sunsetting. It has to be a little cloudy. He's walking through a sunflower field. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm telling you, it's the best shot of the year so far. It is stunning. I mean, it is gorgeous. It is an amazingly
00:12:18
Speaker
well-crafted movie that happens to be a violent slaughter film. And I thought that the body doubles actually were pretty good. I thought the cast was fine. They were playing asshole kids. I wonder who plays Johnny Cast. Ryan Barrett. Good job, my boy. You were pretty good.
00:12:42
Speaker
Then there was Andrea Pavlovich. She played Chris. We got Charlotte Kriegan, Aurora. She's the yoga girl, Lauren Marie Taylor, the woman. She's the older woman. She's in Friday, 32. Liam Leon is Troy. Reese Presley plays the Ranger. Sam Rolston, Aaron. Tinthy Paul McCarthy is Chuck. Leroy Sebastian's is Brody and Alexander Oliver's Evan. Ryan Barrett, you moved
00:13:09
Speaker
The direction, I mean, it's Chris Nash, probably most of it, but the way he moves around the. He's. So precise in the way he moves, like there's no wasted movement. And I mean, the movie's great. I mean, I absolutely adore it. I'm probably going to go watch it again. I'm probably going to cover my eyes this time because I don't know if I can watch that scene again. But yeah, I just I just loved it. What else has Chris Nash done? Because this was his debut. That's fucking insane.
00:13:44
Speaker
Oh my god, this is his first real movie. Oh my god, it is. His first feature like legitimate movie. Yo, hell yeah, Chris Nash. This was awesome. I wanted this guy on the podcast so bad now. I want to talk to him about this.
00:14:08
Speaker
But yeah, a fantastic movie. If you're a fan of horror and slash movies, definitely check it out. If you're not a fan of gore, do not watch this movie. If you're a fan of gore, if you're a fan of violence, you're a fan of horror, you're a fan of cinematography and film, any of us watch this movie. I'm telling you, it is so good. Yeah, that's all I really had to say about violent nature. I think you should all go watch it. I mean, I absolutely adored it.
00:14:37
Speaker
Well, um, let me refuse to come out with the hint. Taffer and horror force and help by saying these things. Yeah, but.
00:14:56
Speaker
Definitely go watch it in the violent nature. And then the next horror film I'm probably going to be talking about is going to probably be Long Lakes, which comes out just over a month from now by Oz Perkins. It's stars. What's her name? Mika Monroe. She plays Lee Harker and then Nicholas Cage is the killer, I think. But yeah, supposedly it just debuted at a film festival, which was a beyond fest to more raves. Supposedly it's been insane.
00:15:29
Speaker
Yeah, let me read this for my audience. Let me read this for the show. Thank you. Okay, neon is pushing really hard for us to know as person has come long ways and know what it's working. It released three cryptic teasers and a trailer and a half a dozen posts and even low key screen filming if you want to watch this for handful carefully select a horror.
00:16:13
Speaker
Okay, so so far every review so far from the first screening looks like it's going to be a star
00:16:24
Speaker
A pure joy of a horror movie that seems like it was brought by Satan himself is what I can say from a lot of the reviews. It seems like. But yeah, that's all I really have for you guys in this episode. Again, these are shorter episodes. If you guys want to go to our longer episodes, go watch any episode that says episode something something. But if it says Times Square, it's not a long episode, especially if you're new. But yeah, definitely go check out In a Violent Nature.
