Hello everyone. Welcome to the Amazing Rewatch. We are covering season 17 episode 8 and we yeah this is our second episode back for our second half of season 17. It's been a good season. we especially liked last episode. It was super exciting.

we had nat and cat arrive first and they are departing at 106 a.m says fly 4 000 miles to muscat in the sultanate of oman then make your way to the burj all move move carah where you'll find your where you'll find this man who will give you an ingot with your inscribed time for when you can climb the fort the fort to receive your next clue uh yeah so that was hard what's an ingot just like a piece of metal um i don't know the reason i know is from ah dreamlight valley you have to make ingots to build things oh a mass of metal okay cast into a convenient shape

um they are arriving at a travel agent to see about flights to oman from russia and they find out that there's a flight that is through amsterdam that will arrive at 8 55 pm so nat and kat and brooke and claire get that 8 55 flight but that and that one's full so the next flight will arrive at 10 35 p.m um but teams start being like have you guys seen chad and stephanie Yeah. Have you guys seen Chattanooga? Where are they? And you go back to the hotel and they're snoozing away. Yeah, there's a snoring sound.

They were so but supposed to depart at 2.45, which is about an hour behind the team before them. Still asleep and the teams, so Nick and Vicki, Jill and Thomas and Gary Mallory get on that 1035 flight.

Teams start getting to the airport and departing. Chen and Stephanie are still asleep. Yeah. And they end up departing two hours late, 445. They get to the travel agent and obviously there's no seats left on those flights.

But they find a flight that lands at 1045, which only 10 minutes after other teams. So that was very lucky. Yeah. Very lucky that it's a travel day. And it just so happens that their flight landed early too And so lucky for them that they have an equalizer when they get there of the the prescribed times. the I wrote down prescribed actually, the inscribed times.

Yeah. Anyways, so that was really lucky. So the teams all arrive in the evening. Obviously, like 8.35, 10.35, 10.45 or whatever. They get to this place and get their times for the next morning.

Yeah. She says yes. And he said his mom passed away his freshman year of college and he is proposing to her with her ring. So and it was romantic and everybody's congratulating them and exciting. Yeah they all cheer.

so yeah fun exciting romantic yeah then this the first time because like we've had people propose at like the pit stops yeah is this the first time that it's just been kind of like it seems like in the middle of a random league seems like it it's a little bit more like less stressful or you know. Yeah. Sometimes it's like, oh, well I have to propose to her now because we're getting eliminated. Eliminated. Yeah. Yeah, this was kind of like he recognized that they were in a nice place. They had some time. it was, you know, the moment was right. Yeah.

The clue says, drive to Jebel Shams, the tallest mountain in Oman. At the base of the mountain, a safety driver will take you to the top. And... So they're getting directions from locals or looking at maps. so One local tells somebody to go past the hospital. One local tells somebody to go past the airport. So it just kind of seems like... like... and Gary and Mallory, who have a map...

Who have maps. That's like Caitlin. Katie. From US Americans. Don't have maps. that seems like she Like so long ago. And it was just last season. yeah So. um the yeah the The map does not help them.

No. In fact, I think it messes them up. Well, yeah. Nick says it takes just as long to look at a map than to ask a local who already knows where they're going to go. And he doesn't look at it them a map. um And they stop at like a gas station. same time Brooke and Claire stop at a gas station. And Vicky like turns around and tells Brooke, oh, they're staying this way. i think that's right. We're already going that way. We're doing the right. And Nick is like, shut up. yeah Like seriously, shut up. I'm so mad at you right now.

Like, you are so ridiculous. they' probably laughing at you because you're so stupid. Because she's, like, giving them, like, helping them. Yeah. um So, Chad and Stephanie are first to arrive to this safety driver at the bottom of the mountain. They get up to the top and the clue says, the clue is a roadblock and it says, one team member must now repel more than 500 feet. Well, you missed the question.

Who wants to add a little magic to their life? Yeah. One team member must now rappel more than 500 feet onto a narrow ledge where they'll have to search among hundreds of lamps for one containing Aladdin's ring.

So Chad does this roadblock and then Jill and Thomas right behind them and Jill does it She's going to rappel. Yeah, rappel. Rappel down the mountain. And then um Chad finds the ring pretty quickly and gets a clue and it says, drive to the giant stack of books in the city of Niswa.

And then Jill finds it right behind them. And they both are on their way there. And Vicky and Nick arrive and so do Claire and Brooke. Vicky does the roadblock and Claire does. And then Nat and Kat and Gary and Mallory are still really struggling with directions and haven't made it there yet. Yes. The self-drive really does...

set teams apart and I'm surprised that Gary is like he i don't know just like people of that generation seem to know how to read a map but he's driving and Mallory's navigating so we don't really know exactly what goes wrong Yeah, well, he doesn't, like, completely blame Mallory either. No, not at all. He says, like, I'm a pilot and i I read maps all the time and we're just, can't find it and really struggle.

um So and Stephanie and Jill and Thomas get to that book. It's like a big like a big statue of stack of books. So they have to climb up and the clue there is a detour. The choices are water table or wedding table.

So in Water Table, they have to pump water from an ancient well deep beneath the earth's surface. Once the water truck is full, they navigate the confusing streets of Musket for a designated house to deliver the water. In Wedding Table, is and they go to a traditional Arab market and purchase 25 frozen chickens and all the ingredients for a traditional wedding soup called mabous, which helps with health and virility.

But nobody chooses this one. So it doesn't really matter. Everybody chooses Water Table. It's so interesting when we get these kind of detours where it's like when I first hear him talking about them and one of them, I'm like, oh I'd probably pick that one. And then nobody picks it. Yeah.

Like, what would we have done differently? I don't know. I i think we probably – like anytime it says navigate the confusing streets of, you know – Kind of weird. so yeah, we don't get anybody doing that one. so um Vicky and Claire find rings on the mountain and head to the next place. um When they get to their car to go back down the mountain, Nick and Vicky's has a flat tire.

and nick is very upset about it and he's throwing things around bad attitude yeah he has angry issues and he helps them like change the tire but yeah and vicky keeps saying like calm down he's like no this is such bullcrap why would i why is this happening so mad about everything all the time he just like yeah has real anger issues Yeah.

So Chad and Stephanie and Jill and Thomas get to the water pumps and start filling their water truck and get them filled up and ask locals for directions. The driver can't tell them anything. um These two teams are like neck and neck this whole time, really.

And then... um so brooke and claire they also choose water table and so do nick and bicky obviously already said that gary and mallory are still lost and nat and kat arrive to the mountain and kat does the roadblock because we like we've been told nat is very scared of heights yeah but i think they're pretty even on their roadblocks so yeah i think so it's not that big of a deal Luckily, they can recognize before they know what the roadblock is, which ones have been height-related height-related because sometimes... Yeah, sometimes you don't know. yeah

But yeah, this one, I mean, you're at the tallest the top of the tallest mountain in Oman, so probably pretty obvious. Yeah. So... When Jill and Thomas are like doing their detour, they find they ask a local to like help them find the house that they're going to. And he's like, that's my cousin. He's are the odds these's not even like in the neighborhood they're going to. He's like out yeah on the highway in his car and they stop and ask him. and he's like, yeah, i can lead you there. And they get closer and get to the neighborhood and get out and they have to actually walk to find this house. And he's like, oh, yeah, that's my cousin's house. And they're like, your cousin is blah, blah, blah, blah. And he's like, yeah.

That is so crazy. What a coincidence. yeah um And Chad and Stephanie also find somebody to kind of help them. But Jill and Thomas finish the detour first. But Chad Stephanie are not far behind. No. And they're like – they're all just kind of like passing each other and they're like, they're there. They're there. Yeah. We got to hurry. We got hurry. But the clue – yeah You have to do this one too. It says make your way to Mutra Suk which is a market like a traditional market. Find the vendor who will hand them the frankincense. Then teams must have must search the market to find Alibaba. When they find him in the store they'll exchange frankincense for their next clue.

They get there and they don't really have too hard of a time. It's a busy market with lots of stalls and stores. I don't know how they know how to find Alibaba because all the signs are like in Arabic and it doesn't say Alibaba or anything on the sign.

Alibaba but he's not dressed I mean Alibaba just dresses like everybody else in Oman dresses so so I don't know how they like they must have more clues of some kind and that we don't know about yeah because I don't know like how they're supposed to find this person or what differentiates him from anybody else yeah well he's wearing a suit He's not actually wearing a suit. No, he's not. Because that's the name of the episode is Alibaba in a suit. Yeah. Well, because the clue says find Alibaba in a suit. In the suit. Yeah. Which the suit is the market. Yeah.

S-O-U-Q. Yeah, market. it's Nick that's like Alibaba in a suit. And he keeps asking Alibaba in a suit? Alibaba in a suit? Alibaba a suit. Yeah. Like, no. So yeah, Nick and Vicki and Brooke and Claire are also like kind of pretty close to each other. Yeah.

And then we have Gary and Mallory who are finally arriving at this mountain. And I don't know if this is true, but Mallory says we they had been driving for nine hours. Yeah. I, when we said, no way that's true, it might be true because if they open their first clue at 730 in the morning. Yeah, because it gets dark. And by the time Mallory finishes, the sun is going down. Yeah. So i think that driving to the mountain anyway was like probably a decent drive.

Like, you know, it might have taken three hours just without getting lost. So then to like also get lost. So they've been driving for nine hours. And kat is up on that ledge. So she's gone down the side and she's searching for the ring. And it takes her a little bit longer because now there's fewer rings. And she was like, I don't know which ones I've already even looked in at this point. But she does find it. And she's out of there before Gary and Mallory even start the roadblock. But Gary Mallory see them coming down the hill. Yeah. And so they're like, oh my gosh.

Yeah. actually have a chance. Like we see another team, which they never thought that they would see another team. So yeah, Mallory does the roadblock. And... and Then when Jill and Thomas and Chad and Stephanie are at the market and they find the Alibaba and get the clue and it says, make your way to Al-Alam Palace for your pit stop of this leg of the race. Last human check, it may be eliminated.

Jill and Thomas head out to the street and Thomas finds somebody. He says, oh, will you, do you know where this is? And they say, yes. He said, you lead us there. I pay you.

And so they head there and they are the first team to come to the mat and Phil says, you're the first team to arrive. However, you have incurred a 30-minute penalty. You cannot pay a taxi driver driver to lead you. the clue says you cannot pay a taxi driver to lead you. I'm wondering if this is like a new rule in the race as a whole on this season because it's been like specified several times this season. Yeah, because in the past they've been able to do that. Yeah. Like pay a taxi to – and then like they either follow them in the car or follow them on foot.

But I think – It might be a new rule. So they get a 30-minute penalty. That means Chad and Stephanie are team number rule number one. And they win a trip to Belize. And they said it's been the best day of their life. Yeah. They were very excited because I think they knew that they were not going to be team number one.

Vicky and Nick and Vicky and Brooke and Claire had finished the detour and they're on their way to the market. So now at this point, like we said, it's really dark. um So.

And Brooke's driving down a one way street. Yeah. And like that you see like police lights come on and. They don't pull them over. They can. I think they kind of like. Oh, it's like these two American girls. Yeah. Don't know what they're doing. These girls just. Yeah. um And Nat and Kat had.

They're doing the water table one and Gary Mallory are doing water table as well. As Nat and Kat are finishing the detour, Gary Mallory see them like finishing. and so they Again, they're like, oh my gosh, we still have a chance. We yeah do it. Yeah, we're not out of this.

um Nick and Vicky and Brooke and Claire finish. They are team number three and Brooke and Claire are number four. so Nick and Vicky, two threes in a row. That's pretty good. and they I think they thought that they were last because they were both really surprised.

Yeah, because they had really only seen each other all day. Yeah, they have not seen Gary and Mallory and Nat Kat and had no way of knowing that they had gotten so lost. So, yeah, they were really happy and excited. Yeah.

And then, and na andka get to the market first and get the frankincense and run around to look for alibaba gary mallory it seems like the way they edit it aren't far behind them it's interesting because it's like this market is closed now all the there's no people in the market anymore when like jill and thomas and chad and stephanie were in the market it was so busy and chaotic and there were so many people walking around and Every store was open and they were all going in and out of stores looking around. At this point when the last two teams are running around the market, every single store is closed.

for And there's no people there. so there's like one store open. Easy to find who Alibaba is at this point. lucky Luckily for them. um So both teams are on their way to the pit stop. And again, like Nat and Kat are looking at a map and they have to turn around. And as they turn around...

Gary and Mallory see them and so now they're like really freaking out because they're like oh we really actually do have a chance it seems like they kind of get confused like what between a palace and a fort um but they're close they know they're close by where they need to be and it's edited to be kind of like who's it going to be at the end but it ends up being team number five are Nat and Kat so that means Gary and Mallory are team number six And unfortunately, this is an elimination league and Gary Mallory are eliminated.

Let's see, there's about 4.7 million people that live there. About 45% of them are expatriates. Expatriates? I don't really know, but... Expats. Expats. But, yeah, expatriates. Mostly from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Philippines. The capital is Muscat. The official language is Arabic.

And the most common religion is Ibadi Islam, which is distinct from Sunni and Shia Islam and emphasizes tolerance and moderation.

Omani culture values hospitality, humility, and tradition. And alcohol is legal here, but it's regulated. that Public behavior is generally conservative but relaxed compared to some neighbors um because it's on the same peninsula as like the UAE and Saudi saudi Arabia and Yemen and stuff like that. um Oman has one of the oldest continuous histories in the Arab world with evidence of settlement going back over 5,000 years.

It was a maritime power controlling parts of East Africa, Iran, and Pakistan. Unlike many neighbors, Oman was never fully colonized by a European power.
