Introduction: Penultimate Episode

00:00:08
Speaker
Hello, welcome back to The Amazing Rewatch. This is the penultimate episode of season 17. That's been like our favorite words. know. learned what it meant in season one. I was just going to say that.
00:00:20
Speaker
Ever since we learned that word, we really like using that word. And um we had an interesting episode.

Challenges in Hong Kong

00:00:29
Speaker
Last episode, we were in Hong Kong.
00:00:31
Speaker
And um nat and cat no not nick and Vicky... Really struggled and decided to give up on a detour and things. And so they had to penalty this episode um starting way behind kind of like an emotional episode for them. Yeah.
00:00:54
Speaker
Kind of. Yeah. So. All that. Yes. Yeah. The. It'll be interesting to see what happens this episode with that fallout of that. hmm.

Journey to Seoul

00:01:03
Speaker
Nat and Kat were the first to arrive last episode, so they are departing at 4.37pm. The clue says fly 1300 miles to Seoul, South Korea.
00:01:12
Speaker
Once you arrive, drive yourself to the towards the demilitarized zone near the North Korean border. and search for the Sungil Bridge where you'll find your next clue. They have $117 for this leg of the race.
00:01:26
Speaker
It also says, do not cross the border. Yeah. and when they Because like when ah they are reading the clue, it just says, drive yourselves towards the North Korean border. And they're like, really? What, really? and We've done this before, though.
00:01:43
Speaker
Yeah. I feel like it was a while ago. Yeah, we haven't been to Korea or South Korea since season four. Okay. And they did something similar, though, because there was like they um one of them almost crossed into North Korea, right?
00:01:57
Speaker
One of the teams. Well, I don't remember that. I don't remember them almost crossing into North Korea. i just remember they went, like the production as a whole went close like this. Yeah.
00:02:09
Speaker
But I don't think you can almost cross into North Korea. Well,

Korean History and Culture Overview

00:02:12
Speaker
I know, but they, like they got stopped. Yeah. So they like try and make this seem so intense and like scary or like who knows what's going to happen. It's like,
00:02:24
Speaker
Pretty sure they know they're very safe and nothing is going to happen. They keep saying things like, we know we know what happened here in the past. like, but do you really know what happened here in the past? What happened there in the past, Sadie? Tell us.
00:02:39
Speaker
um So, well I'll just tell you about Korea specifically. We didn't pick, like, one specific city because we, um like, went for in a lot of areas of South Korea. Hold on, let me... So, Korea.
00:02:58
Speaker
South Korea is known as the Republic of of Korea. Seoul is the capital. There's 51 million people in South Korea. And it's about the size of Indiana.
00:03:10
Speaker
That's 51 million people. That's lot. The official language is Korean. The current sea is South Korean won and it's a democratic republic. It's situated on the southern half of the Korean peninsula, but not bordered by North Korea and surrounded by the yellow sea and the sea of Japan.
00:03:28
Speaker
um Korea's history goes back thousands of years, uh, different dynasty periods and ancient kingdoms and rulers. In 1910 to 1945, Korea was colonized by Japan. 1945, Korea was divided after World War two into the North Soviet-backed Korea and the South U.S.-backed Korea. In 1950 to 53 was the Korean War.
00:03:55
Speaker
ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty, and says technically still at war. In the 1960s to 80s, there was rapid industrialized industrialization under authoritarian governments.
00:04:09
Speaker
In the late 1980s to the present, it has transitioned to a stable democracy with massive economic growth. um So in the Democratic Republic, they have a president who president who's elected for a single five-year term, no chance for re-election.
00:04:26
Speaker
The key themes in their politics are relations with North Korea economy and cost of living, technology leadership, gender equality and labor issues, youth with unemployment and housing prices. prices um It's highly urbanized. 50% of the population lives in Seoul metro area.
00:04:46
Speaker
Has one of the world's lowest birth rates, leading to concerns about aging and workforce or shortages. It's education full focused. It has intense academic pressure, like university entrance exams are a big deal.
00:05:00
Speaker
And military

South Korea's Gender and Pop Culture

00:05:01
Speaker
service is mandatory for most men for 18 to 21 months. It's one of the world's top 15 economies. And it's leaders in electronics, automotive manufacturing, shipbuilding, and entertainment and media.
00:05:16
Speaker
Global influence ah from like K-pop. Film and television. Beauty and skin care and food. South Korea has some of the fastest internet speeds in the world.
00:05:27
Speaker
um Age used to be counted differently. Everyone aged up on New Year's Day. This changed only in 2023. That's weird. um in China, though, that kind of reminds me. When I taught VIPKid, they told us that um when they're born, they're one.
00:05:51
Speaker
So, like, the age that they are is, like, a year behind or ahead of, like, what they are. Yeah. Interesting. Yeah. Which doesn't have anything to do with Korea, but... But just a different age system. Yeah. yeah South Korea is a fascinating mix of hyper-modern tech, ancient tradition, collective culture...
00:06:11
Speaker
and intense individuality, politeness with blunt honesty and pressure heavy systems. um The Korean War. So we don't really learn a lot about this in our school systems.
00:06:24
Speaker
No. It was a major Cold War conflict fought on the Korean peninsula between North Korea, which was the communist backed by the Soviet Union and China and South Korea, which was anti-communist backed primarily by the United States.
00:06:40
Speaker
began in 1950 and ended in 1953 without a peace treaty. Korea was divided in the first place because, like we said, it was colonized by Japan until 1945. Then after Japan's defeat in World War two it was split temporarily at the 38th parallel, which is like the DMZ, which we talk about in this episode a lot.
00:07:01
Speaker
And both North and South Korea claimed to be the legitimate government of all of Korea. um um In June 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea crossing the 38th parallel.
00:07:15
Speaker
Seoul fell within days The United Nations led by the United States intervened on South Korea's behalf and the war quickly escalated into proxy war. Exhalated?
00:07:26
Speaker
Escalated. I saw proxy escalated into a proxy war of the

Episode Challenges and Nick/Vicky's Attitude

00:07:31
Speaker
Cold War. And fighting settled near the 38th parallel and came to a stalemate.
00:07:41
Speaker
In 1953, the armistice was signed. And the DMZ was created. so like we said, it's a there's no peace treaty and they're still technically at war. it costs almost 3 million deaths, mostly civilians.
00:07:55
Speaker
Massive destruction of cities and infrastructure. Millions of families permanently separated. It's one of the deadly swores of the 20th century, yet often overlooked. The DMZ is one of the most heavily militarized borders on Earth.
00:08:09
Speaker
The demilitarized zone is a heavy militarized area. Yeah. Interesting. That seems ironic. Is that the right word to use?
00:08:20
Speaker
Veterans often call it the Forgotten War in the United States. Um... The Korean War wasn't a civil war. It was a Cold War flashpoint, a human humanitarian catastrophe, and the origin story of one of today's most dangerous geopolitical standoffs.
00:08:36
Speaker
So have you heard about grandpa's like Navy experience very much? or So he joined the Navy right after this war ended, but before the GI Bill expired so that he could have his college paid for. Yeah.
00:08:54
Speaker
So he was like only in the Navy technically during peacetime because he he was only in for a couple of years. He got out before Vietnam. like good timing yeah yeah got school paid for and he traveled yeah he went to like Thailand Japan Hong Kong Korea and it's interesting because he he hates traveling now he's traveling but he also is not like super like technologically savvy at all so when he thinks of Japan and Singapore and stuff like that he remembers when at
00:09:32
Speaker
whole When they were like world fishing villages. Yeah. Yeah. Like he called he like remembers them as like dirty, sad places. Mm hmm. And that's not what they are at all anymore. Yeah, now they're very very much modern um leaders in like yeah the economy. when i yeah When I think of Korea, I definitely think of like K-pop. Korean beauty is like big right now and everybody says like Korea is 15 years ahead of the rest of the world.
00:09:59
Speaker
And then car making. I'm pretty sure Hyundai is Korean, isn't it? I have a Hyundai. I think so. um The thing that I think about Not all the time, but... I also think of Daniel Dae Kim because he's my favorite. He's great. i love him I love the... I think they call it the 4B movement.
00:10:22
Speaker
Hold on. It's taking me in. a lot of We might have talked about this in season four, but season four was a long time ago for us. was. It was. um So the 4B movement is a radical feminist movement that originated in South Korea in the late 2010s. It's a personal and political boycott of traditional relationships with men rooted in frustration with gender inequality. The 4Bs stands for different Korean phases that start with the letter B. So it doesn't make sense because this is English, but that's why it's.
00:10:53
Speaker
So one is no dating men. Two is no sex with men. Three is no marriage to men. And four is no child childbirth. It started because of deep gender inequality.
00:11:03
Speaker
widespread misogyny and heavy expectations on women after marriage. And has caused, like we talked about, the lowest birth rate in the world. um It's not the sole cause.
00:11:17
Speaker
The sole cause? Yeah. Writing that down is a possible title for it. The soul cause. And yeah, the 4B movement is not about hating men. It's about women saying if the system is stacked against us, we're opting out entirely.
00:11:32
Speaker
It's one of the clear signals of how gender politics, economics, and personal life are colliding in modern South Korea. I've never heard of that. Oh, really? Yeah. It does make me think of Lost. I feel like every every so often, either Lost or America's Next Top Model are like the things that we reference the most on this show that is not the Amazing Race. yep But like ah one of the main stories is Jin and Sun, and they they are from Seoul, from Korea.
00:12:04
Speaker
And just like the high expectations of everybody and Like she comes from a rich family and he's from a poor family and he's not good enough for her. And and he starts out the series like very controlling. Yeah. Very strict controlling.
00:12:20
Speaker
ah But then they turn into the best story of the whole show. The best. Makes me sad. If you haven't watched Lost, you should do that now. But. So good. Yes.
00:12:34
Speaker
um Okay. Well, is that? I couldn't. Where were we even at? So, okay. The beginning, basically. Jill and Thomas then leave at 447. So Kat were Thomas, Brooke Claire end going to hotel.
00:12:48
Speaker
burlare five twenty six and be and clare ended up going to a hotel to book a flight. They were talking about when they tried to book flights at the airport going to Bangladesh, I think. Yeah, I think And it just was really difficult. It took a long time. So they're asking somebody at a hotel who can speak English to help them. And the way they were setting it up, it kind of seemed like they were going to miss their flight or not get booked or get it on an earlier flight or something something was going to happen because they were just like sitting there drinking coffee and tea like in this nice little hotel and jill and thomas and nat and cat were at the airport booking them immediately yeah but they all ended up on the same flight that departs at 12 25
00:13:32
Speaker
Yes. And we don't know how far behind um Nick and Vicki were. And it doesn't tell us because when they open their clue, it says last to depart with no time.
00:13:43
Speaker
And that's so annoying. Yeah. Because it's they could pretty much tell us the time. So the flight departs at 1225. Nick and Vicky, all the other teams are checking in and boarding the flight. Nick and Vicky arrive to the airport and by the way, they speak to the lady at the desk and she says, oh, the next flight to Seoul departs at 1225 on Korean Airlines. Yeah, it seems like they're going to make it. And she's like, oh, that's already left.
00:14:09
Speaker
So they were really, really close to making that flight. So i don't know why they couldn't tell us what time they departed. Because it wasn't far, however long it takes them to get to the airport in Hong Kong before 1225. So if it was like midnight, that means that Nat and Kat left at 437. They leave maybe like midnight.
00:14:34
Speaker
That big of a difference. Well, we know they had the six-hour penalty, so that's even if we're counting back at 4.30, 5.30, 6.30, 7.30, 8.30, 9.30, 10.30. But were also pretty behind, Phil So we don't know. ten thirty but they were art they were also pretty far behind phil said so so we don't know But Nick is in a better mood.
00:14:53
Speaker
However, it does like if this little flashback of like all of the times on the race so far that he's been just the worst. And while they're ah like in the taxi on the way to the airport, he's like a little voiceover saying that he realizes that he was so has been so rude to her and he was out of line and he doesn't want to do that and he's not going to treat her like that ever again so we hope that that's true and he is much nicer to her this time and i you know they go into it knowing that they really have lots to overcome to have a chance and so they just like i think they have that in mind and make the best and make the yeah
00:15:33
Speaker
So it's like if the flight, if their flight departs at 1225, they're going to arrive in the morning and that's usually a sign that things are going to be open. yeah Like there could have maybe been a chance if they were landing at 1225 and got somewhere and it would be closed. They to wait for it to open, but that's not going to happen.
00:15:50
Speaker
Their flight is not going to depart until 930 a.m. the next morning. That actually surprises me. I thought that there would be more flights from Hong Kong to Seoul. I was thinking the same thing. I really thought think there would be more. Yeah. But 1225 or 930 in the scheme of things when it comes to like business or travel or whatever not that big of a difference, but um you just think the amount of people going between would be more options. Yeah.
00:16:16
Speaker
Well, and like i'm the kind of the general flow of air traffic is like there are those red eye flights that leave around between like midnight and one o'clock.
00:16:29
Speaker
And then you'd never will find a flight that leaves between

Race to the Pit Stop: Penalties and Outcomes

00:16:34
Speaker
like 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. Mm-hmm.
00:16:37
Speaker
But usually, like, the morning of, flights start leaving around 5. So I was surprised that they had to wait clear until 9.30.
00:16:46
Speaker
That's the one that they're on. And then the first flight is landing at this point. And we don't really see Nick and Vicky much from this point on. Yeah. And that kind of tells you all that you need to know.
00:16:59
Speaker
Yeah. But it's still a good episode with some fun tasks. So ah they get in the cars and it's like really raining as they're driving towards North Korea. And they're like all talking about How cool it is and how, quote unquote, scary, you know, just like, oh, we're going to the DMZ.
00:17:18
Speaker
like, you probably didn't even know what that term was two hours ago. And now it's like, you're talking about it. but Or like you're actually... They're actually scared that they're going to somehow end up in North Korea or Yeah, they're all talking about like wearing like bulletproof vests and stuff like that. but It's not that crazy. No. They drive to this bridge.
00:17:41
Speaker
And obviously the race is not going to put them in danger. Yeah. so And the clue at the bridge, Jill and Thomas get there first. The clue at the bridge says, raft down the Hantong River, then board a Humvee and ride to the U.S. Army base Camp Casey to get your next clue.
00:17:57
Speaker
Brooke and Claire are not far behind them and Nat and Kat are also close behind. And they get changed in wetsuits and get in the rafts and go through the rapids. And jo and Thomas get to the Humvees first.
00:18:10
Speaker
And then they like make it seem all serious there too. They put them in helmets, army helmets and vests and stuff like that. Did you also notice that when they climb in the Jeep initially, they're still in like their little wetsuits from the rapid like the raft ride but then when we see them inside the jeep they're all wearing their regular clothes and their hair is brushed and didn't notice that they must have made a stop yeah for everybody to get dressed interesting um and so when they arrive at the camp the army base there's a clue box and it's a roadblock it says who's ready
00:18:45
Speaker
Who's ready to be all that you can be? Yeah. So they have to choose a headband and walk amongst a troop of soldiers who are practicing Taekwondo, doing so like martial arts exercises. They have to find the soldier wearing the same headband without getting hit because like the soldiers are like Moving their arms.
00:19:05
Speaker
Punching. and Yeah. um And then when they find the matching headband, that soldier will go and kick a board in half and like inside the board is the clue. So Thomas is going to do it and then Brooke is going to do it.
00:19:19
Speaker
Brooke makes an attempt and she thinks she has a matching headband, but the person takes it and puts it in his pocket and like just like keeps going. Yeah. So she has to run. it seems like she has to like were run like all the way up out of this little.
00:19:33
Speaker
They're kind of like in a stadium. Like in a football field

Final Teams and Finale Speculations

00:19:35
Speaker
almost. So she has to run up and out and get another headband and come back in. But Thomas gets it right on the first time. And that clue says make your way on foot to the subway and travel to the Seoul World Cup Stadium to find your next clue. Mm-hmm.
00:19:52
Speaker
Then Nat and Kat arrive and Kat does the roadblock. So Brooke finds her match and gets the clue and Nat and Kat not too far behind them. Jill and Thomas catch the first subway to the stadium and then Brooke and Claire and Nat and Kat catch the next train.
00:20:09
Speaker
And Jill and Thomas arrive to the stadium. They get the clue and it's a detour and the choices are full throttle or full bottle. For full throttle, they have to go on foot or by subway to the Mok Dong Ice Rink, put on speed skating suit suits, and skate a two-person relay for a total of 24 laps.
00:20:30
Speaker
And full bottle is travel on foot or subway to the Nam-Daman Market, put on delivery uniforms, and carry um six giant ginseng roots.
00:20:43
Speaker
in these bottles to a wellness center without breaking any of the glass jars. Then they have to drink a bottle of the ginseng tonic. And they, Thomas is like, we should do full throttle. We suck at delivering stuff. And Jill's like, we do? We do?
00:20:59
Speaker
I can't remember a time that they've delivered. I don't know either, but we would I think we would have chosen full throttle, the skating. Yeah. Because you don't have to get the 24 laps in a certain amount time. You just have to finish them. Yeah, just have to keep going.
00:21:15
Speaker
And we would go to the Peaks Ice Arena growing up the home of the 2002 Winter Olympics. And maybe the 2034.
00:21:28
Speaker
Maybe. is it not pretty set in stone? Well, maybe like that. They'll actually see at that location. i Okay. I was like, I thought Utah was the like confirmed host. what are you talking about? Maybe. Yeah, except for I was like reading a ah I mean, i guess 2034 is pretty set in stone, but it's like, will Utah be a viable location for Winter Olympics in the future?
00:21:54
Speaker
it because It's not a crazy thought because we are at the almost the end of November and it hasn't, it's barely snowed. That's what I meant. I don't know why i said November. We are at the end of January right now and it's barely snowed like one inch all winter.
00:22:07
Speaker
yeah Like all the ski resorts are like having to make their own snow delay openings. It's been pretty crazy. My theory is that we all fell asleep and the cat the calendar kept going or the calendar shifted and we didn't know because like it's like 90 degrees in October.
00:22:30
Speaker
And then we don't get snow until like February or March and it stays around until May. hu Something happened. We're having like it all shifted like a three months.
00:22:41
Speaker
So that's my conspiracy theory. Okay. I've also hurt because like the Summer Olympics in LA are is it 20?
00:22:52
Speaker
Is it this year? No, this year is. No, it would be 28, right? Yeah. yeah But, um, I mean, you, you know you can't believe everything you read on the internet, but people say that Like the U.S. should be banned from the Olympics this year um or and shouldn't like LA shouldn't be able to host. I've been seeing that because the World Cup is hosted in North America next.
00:23:18
Speaker
And there's teams, World Cup teams that that are like boycotting boycotting it because like, you know, a lot of the World Cup teams come from Latin America countries and those teams.
00:23:29
Speaker
their people are being targeted by, you know, we're not getting political, but like it just could be a very realistic thing that maybe the World Cup doesn't happen yeah here. Yeah, it'll kind of be interesting to see what happens.
00:23:43
Speaker
um Yeah, and I feel like South Korea always does really well in the Winter Olympics, just from my very vague memory.
00:23:55
Speaker
So, um yeah, all of the teams choose, full throttle and Claire doesn't really want to. She keeps saying like, I've never skated before. I don't know how to do that. I'm sure Brooke has won a gold medal in skating because she can do everything. And like Brooke can tell that Claire doesn't want to, but she really wants to. And Claire can tell that Brooke really wants to do it. So they're both being really passive aggressive and Brooke's like, well, I'll do it. You really want to do it. So I will do it. And And Claire's saying the same thing. Well, you really want to do this one, but I don't really want to, but you really want to, so I will.
00:24:32
Speaker
I'm like, somebody just decide and go. Well, I think their bickering makes it so they don't read the clue correctly. Yes. Because it says make your way on foot or by subway to the ice rink. Or it says both detours you have to make your way on foot or by subway. And they call for a taxi. They get in a cab to go to the ice rink. So...
00:24:51
Speaker
um Which means that they get there first. Yeah. And what were you going to say? Well, Jill and Thomas, they... um They take the subway. Yeah. And they arrive at the ice rink and they're like, how did Brooke and Claire get here so fast? We made no wrong turns. Like, we didn't make any mistakes. How is that possible? Yeah.
00:25:10
Speaker
and they're just like really focused on because they don't stop talking about it like how'd they get there so fast yeah and yeah so they all look so silly doing these skates they they laugh because thomas it looks like he's kind of like running on the skates he's not even gliding along and They, you can tell they're, none of them are, are skaters, but like we said, you just have to do the 24 labs. It doesn't have to be in a certain time period. It doesn't have to be pretty. It just has to be finished. Yeah.

Nick and Vicky: Life After the Show

00:25:43
Speaker
So they, Brooke and Claire get there first. Jill and Thomas right behind them. Jill and Thomas end up passing them by like one lap to finish the detour first and get the clue that says make your way to the Han Riverside Park to find your next clue.
00:26:03
Speaker
And we do get a little glimpse of Nick and Vicky right here. Their flight has landed and somehow they found some guy like at the airport, I think.
00:26:13
Speaker
I don't know. I couldn't really. Somewhere they found a guy they They asked him directions and he was like, I'll take you. Follow me. like all the way to North Korea. Yeah. And he gives them food. Yeah. He's like so nice. It seems like there's somebody with him. He like take pictures with them. Yeah. Takes them up and they like stop it at like a little gas station. Basically. And he's like, I need to toilet. And they're like, good. Us too. Let's all stop. And then, yeah, really some friendly people. Yeah.
00:26:40
Speaker
He takes care of them and gets them where they need to go. And then we cut back to these people Yeah. skating Yeah, so those first two teams finish skating. Nat and Kat arrive and they start the skating. They're so slow.
00:26:56
Speaker
Yeah. Jill and Thomas are dropped off by their cab to by this park, but they're looking for It looks like they're given the direction that the clue box is under an airplane statue. Under the plane, yeah.
00:27:11
Speaker
Under the plane. So they're trying to ask people if they know where the plane is. And Jill, she's like, do you speak English? And Thomas is like, no, no, don't ask that. You can't ask old people if they can speak English. And she's like, why? then she's like, can we ask this guy? Is he in your age range?
00:27:29
Speaker
And it was just, it was really funny how they said that. And it took them a while to find it. so Because they were, explaining this plane thing to this guy for a really long time they were trying to figure make him think i don't know meanwhile brooke and claire like arrive and find it right away don't feel like they even asked for directions it says make your way to the next pit stop at pit stop at the temple of heaven built for the first and only emperor of korea the last team to check in here may be eliminated Jill and Thomas finally figure it out and get the clue, and they're heading there. Brooke and Claire run up to the mat, all happy and excited, and Phil says, you're the first team to arrive. However, you were supposed to walk on foot or take the subway, and you took a cab, and you have incurred a 30-minute penalty.
00:28:18
Speaker
They don't seem surprised, though. They seem like they kind of know. And, like, they were, like, hoping maybe they didn't write. Ketchum or something. Yeah. I don't know.
00:28:29
Speaker
But they're also like not mad at themselves or upset. I think they know that they have a pretty cushy situation with Nick and Vicky not being there. And so they are like okay to sit there.
00:28:41
Speaker
But they don't win the first wave first place prize. Jill and Thomas are technically team number one. They win a trip to Iguazu Falls in Argentina. Yeah, that one would be kind of hard to know that you could have got...
00:28:52
Speaker
I know. I'd like walk away from the mat. I'd be like, i don't even want to know. Yeah. I don't know where they're going. Yeah. I don't want to know where they're going. and So team number two are Brooke and Claire and team number three are Nat and Kat.
00:29:02
Speaker
And they are our final three racers in the finale of season 17. Which means we have a 66% chance of an all-female team winning the race. And at the beginning of this episode, there was a little interview thing with Thomas and he was saying like,
00:29:19
Speaker
There's so much girl power in this season. These are strong, athletic, like driven women. women who They're smart. and They have a chance. like We want to win, but they have a big chance and they're doing really well. I had good things to say about them, which I liked. and i feel like at this point, like all three of the teams are pretty equally matched. like They've all won legs. They've all done well.
00:29:44
Speaker
There's been a couple of legs that all of them have been like pretty close to elimination. So it's ah I think it's going to be a really interesting and equally matched final. Yeah, I agree.
00:29:58
Speaker
um So nick and Vicky, we so We don't see them raft down the river, but we do see them arrive to Camp Casey. And there's a sign saying speed bump and you see them spring off a dirty i good military tank.
00:30:15
Speaker
And then you don't we don't see them really doing anything else until they arrive to the map with Phil and he tells them that they're eliminated. Mm-hmm. Phil asks if they've learned anything about themselves and ah Nick says that he realizes that like being rude and not caring about other people is just like not going to get you anywhere and he wants to change and what did Vicky say? She's like, well, why I didn't kill him the whole time so I think that's good. Yeah, that's a big win. And it can only go up from here.
00:30:45
Speaker
and I want you to... Hold on, I want to just follow up with... so korea South Korea in the... Olympics specifically. oh yeah. This is like winter and summer, not necessarily one or the other. But it says the short answer is South Korea absolutely punches above its weight at the Olympics.
00:31:03
Speaker
It's usually in the top 10 to 15 Olympic nations despite having a much smaller population than other powerhouses like the U.S. s or China. They regularly finish well above countries of similar size, known for high gold medal efficiency, not just lots of bronzes.
00:31:19
Speaker
They're extremely strong in specific sports. ah like archery, which is their crown jewel. It's the most dominant archery nation in the Olympic history. They've won the most Olympic archery gold medals.
00:31:33
Speaker
um Taekwondo, because Korea is the birthplace of Taekwondo, they consistently win that. Fencing, shooting, table tennis, judo, weightlifting.
00:31:44
Speaker
The Winter Olympics, they do even better. the korea South Korea is elite at the Winter Olympics. Like short track speed skating. Holy cow, that's really hard say. Short track speed skating? Short track speed skating. I guess it's not that hard.
00:31:57
Speaker
It was really hard for me to read.
00:32:01
Speaker
um Why they're so good. They have specialized specialized training systems. They start young and train intensely. They have national pride tied to international performance, um military service exemptions for medalists, which is a huge incentive. oh yeah and they focus on sports where technique and precision matter.
00:32:23
Speaker
korean doesn't Korea doesn't try to win everything. They try to win what they're best at. Which makes sense. Just, kind of you know, like nationally invest in a few sports that you just like crush everybody. Mm-hmm.
00:32:37
Speaker
Yeah, speed skating was one of the things that I was thinking of that I know that they are really good at, obviously, because that's one of the tasks too. But yeah. Okay, so... The Winter Olympics are coming up in like a couple weeks. I know.
00:32:51
Speaker
I'm so excited. Yeah. I've been seeing a lot of figure skating like finals get up come up on my TikTok and stuff like that. Yeah. um Okay, Nick and Vicky. Yeah.
00:33:04
Speaker
I don't know. This is another hard one. We were saying like this season, it's really interesting because some of the teams, the romantic relationship teams are like, they could go could go one way or the other. Don't know so I say that they stayed together for a while, but they're not together now.
00:33:22
Speaker
That is correct. Wow, I'm so at one. They actually ended up getting married, but they're not married anymore. Okay. So Nick and Vicky, their race average is 5.28, which is very high for how poorly they did in the very beginning. Yeah. So they did better than their average, but they were decreasing their average quite a bit by... By staying in longer. staying in longer, but... Yeah.
00:33:50
Speaker
And they pretty much... Like, they were either at the end or, like, middle of the pack most of the time. Their best placement was in Oman when they got second place. And they were saved twice by non-elimination.
00:34:03
Speaker
So... um Let's see. Nick ended up doing six roadblocks and Vicky did five... and And on.
00:34:14
Speaker
With their elimination, Thomas is the only male left in the race. They are the first team not required to complete a speed bump after that one in Russia because of like the production difficulties or whatever that affected all the teams. Whatever happened there, we don't really know. But...
00:34:33
Speaker
They are the third team to not complete a detour and take a penalty. And we find out that the penalty is now only six hours. It used to be 24 hours. Yeah. That's crazy.
00:34:45
Speaker
So the third team. So the first one would be. was like Nancy and Emily in season one. Season one. And then the next one was the brothers when they were like digging in the sand in Egypt.
00:34:57
Speaker
um That might have been a roadblock. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. This was a detour, and I think that the last one was season 15.
00:35:08
Speaker
The season that Megan and Shane won, but I don't remember what the detour was that somebody didn't do. Oh, no. Was it um Flight Time and Big Easy? That was a roadblock, too. That be roadblock, With the phones.
00:35:22
Speaker
Yeah. Don't know. It'll tell me in just second. Hold on. The first time, this is also the first time that a team has been eliminated in South Korea.
00:35:34
Speaker
My memories of South Korea from season four are when the that team had to eat those live squids. Oh, yeah, I didn't even remember that.
00:35:45
Speaker
But yeah. Okay, so the last episode was the first time since Not My Finest Hour that a team has quit a detour. So let's see what that was. Oh, I think, okay. It was, it was, um, the poker players, Maria and Tiffany. And there was like that basically like croquet and they switched detours like four times. Yeah. Um, and the other one was like trying to hit that, the, the bell and make the bell go up to the top and they couldn't do either of them.
00:36:17
Speaker
What season was that? That 15. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Mystery solved. So now back to today Nick and Vicky. So yes, after the race, they did get married. We don't have like a lot of details about like their marriage and their divorce, but both of them still have pictures of each other on their social media.
00:36:37
Speaker
So possibly could have been amicable and they're still friends. Did they have children together? I don't think so, but it does look like Nick has a kid now. Okay.
00:36:49
Speaker
There's like all of his recent pictures are with him and a little boy, but not with and not with a woman. So I don't know. um There's not like a lot of updates about him. He's got a big bushy beard now.
00:37:08
Speaker
Can I see? you Okay. There we go. We had a little bit of a technical difficulty. Hopefully we can just ah splice these two audio recordings together and everything will be seamless to you and you won't even know there was a problem. But my computer just like all of a sudden shut down when I turned it to show a picture of Nick and his bushy beard to Sadie.
00:37:33
Speaker
Yeah, so I don't care that much now because I don't want to lose this. um But Victoria, however, does have a lot more information about her. She um is like actually quite like a highly recognized hairstylist and like... um Are they from Las Vegas? Yeah. Okay. Okay.
00:37:56
Speaker
So her website, it says she's an artistic director, educator, platform artist, session artist, extension specialist, and color specialist. And she um competes in like hair shows and...
00:38:10
Speaker
um I think, you know, just like takes picture or does hair for pictures of or people that are like getting pictures taken for like models.
00:38:21
Speaker
um She posts pretty regularly on social media and She's really pretty. i i do not like that piercing in the middle of her face. I just think that they're not attractive on anybody, not just her or the one like what <unk> it's not even a lip piercing. It's like clear up under her cheek. Yeah.
00:38:46
Speaker
Anyway. Her face is so pretty though. um But yeah, still living in Las Vegas. Looks like pretty successful in the hair world and not married to Nick anymore.
00:38:57
Speaker
So. Okay. That's really sad that we had to go through all of that to record the last two minutes of this podcast. and Yeah. yeah But. That's okay.
00:39:08
Speaker
um So,

Season Reflection and Finale Preview

00:39:09
Speaker
yeah, next episode is the finale. Let's make our guesses on where, like, what city we think it's going to be in in the United States. um I have not looked yet, I don't think. Okay. No.
00:39:23
Speaker
I'm going to say LA for some reason. I was going to say that, too. Because we did, where did we start? We started in Boston. Yeah. Which was the first time we'd been in Boston. But there's not going to be a finale in Boston. We already know that.
00:39:36
Speaker
Yeah. So, yeah. I'm somewhere in, like, Southern California. bet. Yeah. Maybe San Diego. So, come listen to the finale episode.
00:39:47
Speaker
Very exciting. It's been a good season. has been a good season. Um, it's going to be, I think it's going to be a really good finale. Yeah. I bet it will be close if I had to guess. Cause I don't know. We, like we said from the beginning, we have not seen this season. Yeah.
00:40:04
Speaker
Um, I do know who wins, but I don't know like how close it is. Okay. So yeah, I'm excited. So come listen. Um,
