00:00:59
Get Defensive Sports Network
ah The powers that be, I'm guessing those who shall not be named, but not the people who actually run the website, the people who own the website, are instituting some changes. And it was some changes that we were not fond of. So we have decided to make a peaceful transition.
00:01:21

00:02:18

And yeah, this is going to be our last episode Land Grant Podcast Network episode. So it's bittersweet. But you know we are um we are back in business together.
Podcast Origin Story
00:02:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
This is how we started. A minor tweak to the name because it was just Get Defensive Podcast. But ah this whole podcasting journey started with me and DJ when we did not know each other that well, ah deciding that we wanted to go into business together.
00:03:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
So it it ah it ah it comes full circle.
00:03:14
DJ
A little DJ and Jordan lore for you guys. um We met at a Greek conference because we're both members of Greek organizations, which we've mentioned to you all before.
00:03:25
DJ
um And we just started following each other on Twitter, Instagram, you know, the whole thing when you meet people, you follow them on social media. um And we just kept having discourse quite often on Twitter specifically just about sports all the time. me and him was arguing about we had the GOAT argument about LeBron versus Kobe. I mean Kobe, LeBron versus MJ, like all those things.
00:03:45
DJ
And eventually, you know, the pandemic hit and we were like, man, you know, be really fun. We should do podcast together. I know we're just internet friends, but we should do a podcast together. um And that's kind of how we came up with pretty much um everything.
00:03:59
DJ
Get Defensive Podcast was the initial name. We had a cute little pithy um little tagline. um And we did about 30 plus episodes um before we were like, okay, podcasting on your own is difficult. But we're back.
00:04:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:04:14
DJ
We're here. Now we have a greater, we have a more evolved idea about what we want from this. and So that's where the whole Get Defensive Sports Network idea comes from, where we can have multiple shows under this one
Humorous Bug Incident
00:04:26
DJ
So obviously Power 2 Podcast with us two, I-80 football show with him and Dante, and hopefully, you know, more fun content to come. Now, I am completely distracted by the fact that now that it's getting warm outside, bugs are coming inside of my house, and there is a bug crawling up my wall currently.
00:04:44
Get Defensive Sports Network
we We do not.
00:04:45
Get Defensive Sports Network
We do not love that. Not at all.
00:04:47
DJ
I am not well. and it's just like all different kinds of bugs. Like I've had the spiders, I have, I don't know what kind of bug this is. It has a long body. There's a tan looking bug. There was a beetle. It's just the bugs are inside and I'm confused because y'all live outside.
00:05:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
the The pros and cons of living in Texas, one could say.
00:05:09
DJ
Oh my goodness. So yeah.
Expanded Content Coverage
00:05:12
Get Defensive Sports Network
But one... one
00:05:12
DJ
Anyways, we're super excited about having our show on our own and being having having a little bit more freedom to discuss greater topics. So obviously it's still a college football show. We're still going to cover it the college football season in the same way.
00:05:24
DJ
But a lot of the changes may start to come like, in what we do during the off season and a kind of expanding more of our topics and things like that. As you guys know, I'm a basketball enthusiast. So talking a little bit more about those things and kind of just expanding, having a little bit more creative freedom and direction.
00:05:37
DJ
So I'm thrilled about that personally. But yes, this is our last time that you'll be seeing us on land grant podcast network. that what it's called? Land grants, whatever.
00:05:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes. Yes.
00:05:48
DJ
Holy land, holy grants. Yeah.
00:05:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
ah So yeah, that that that's that's the podcast business. Not into the news.
NCAA Settlement Pause
00:05:59
Get Defensive Sports Network
That was news, but into the college football news.
00:06:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
DJ, what are we talking about today?
00:06:06
DJ
Oh, my goodness. Well, I wanted to give you guys an update on the NCAA house settlement because, you know, we really are just a couple of weeks away from there being some real conclusions made with all of this.
00:06:17
DJ
um But basically, there has been another pause. um I don't believe the what the um date, like the deadline is, but I'm sure it's near. But basically, We have a another pause because the judge is concerned about athletes losing their spots on rosters once the roster limits are implemented.
00:06:37
DJ
um There's an estimated about 5,000 athletes that would lose their spots in the 43 sponsored sports that the NCAA has. If they were to implement the roster limits immediately um with the house settlement and she is very, very concerned about that.
00:06:49
DJ
So she wants the athletes that are currently on rosters to be grandfathered in which would allow for the sports currently to have higher to basically exceed the roster limits until they can implement them within the next.
00:07:02
DJ
years So that way athletes are not losing scholarships or have scholarships or whatever it is that they have um right now. So that's the biggest thing that's pausing the settlement at the moment. um There seems to be concerns. Coaches were also concerned about this as well.
00:07:16
DJ
um and So now the prosecution, as well as the defense of working together to sort of figure out what, how they're going to mitigate that. um So more to come on the house settlement.
00:07:27
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, um it's definitely not as easy as they thought it was going to be. But I also thought think that this is interesting because coaches, like this was literally the first thing that coaches complained about.
00:07:38
Get Defensive Sports Network
And I know we've talked about this before, like talking about a school like Nebraska, right? Nebraska is a school that has like lived and died with its walk-on program.
00:07:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
If you believe the history, which I don't think it's, I think it's act legitimately true, but Nebraska was one of they were either the first to institute walk-ons or they were the first to like really, really buy into it.
00:08:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
And some of Nebraska's star players are walk-ons.
00:08:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
If I remember correctly, this is not Nebraska, but if I remember correctly, JJ Watt was a walk-on at Wisconsin. And so, like, of course, you don't have a million walk-ons who become Hall of Famers, right? Like J.J. Watt. But there is a โ the walk-on program is very sort of integral to a lot of programs, especially smaller programs.
00:08:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
But then even the big programs, it's integral for a couple of reasons. One, because we're supposed to care about the athletes and we don't always โ there There are players who are maybe not good enough to get full rides other places or just really want to go to a certain school.
00:08:45
Get Defensive Sports Network
There are players who have scholarships to like Kent State or a D2 or a D3 school. And we'll go to Ohio State because they want to be a Buckeye. So you're cutting out all of them on the player side. But then the other thing that coaches were sort of worried about is injuries. Because like not to say that walk-ons are punching bags, but they're kind of punching bags. And so when you have walk-ons, some of your players...
00:09:09
Get Defensive Sports Network
you get You're able to have sort of more rest for players. You're able to have practice bodies, which I mean, the NFL has a whole practice squad, right?
00:09:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
Basketball has practice, but like every sport has practice players, right?
00:09:20
DJ
Like this players. Yeah.
00:09:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
And so the difference with football is that they're maybe more integral to the team or whatever.
00:09:27
Get Defensive Sports Network
There's official category, walk-in, whatever. So... But yeah, so it's just like coaches kind of identified that immediately. So it's it's kind of interesting that it got to this point and the lord the judge just now recognized that that may be an issue.
00:09:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
But yeah, you sort of...
00:09:41
DJ
Apparently she's been a vocalizing that that was a problem for her. She's been vocalizing it. And so now she's at a point where she's saying, I literally will not accept this until y'all figure out how to manage that.
00:09:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, which I mean, I don't think it should be that hard to manage it. You just know who's on the roster and then you say you're grandfathered in.
00:10:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
i mean, maybe it's some like transfer.
00:10:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
It's just I mean, I don't know, but it's it's probably a positive thing. um There's a lot of things that are going to be tough to just change immediately. And that is sort of what they were doing.
00:10:16
DJ
Yeah, so really, truly more to come on that because she's basically straight up saying she's about to throw this case out if they don't figure it
Iowa State Betting Scandal
00:10:26
DJ
out. So moving on to the other piece of news that I just thought was hilarious personally, because as a person who...
00:10:34
DJ
I fully immerse myself in sports industry. It is a known thing that sports industry professionals, coaches, those individuals, we are not allowed to participate in sports betting, especially if you work for a team, especially if you work for an organization. I mean, even like the GAs in the marketing department and athletics are not allowed to participate in sports betting. It's everybody.
00:10:56
DJ
And so apparently we got some foolery going on over in Iowa where some coaches were punished for over $100,000 in a betting scandal while wagering on their own school.
00:11:09
DJ
So I will be honest to say that coaches is a very, very strong term when y'all figure out who these people are.
00:11:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
insane.
00:11:14
DJ
But basically, there are five current or former Iowa State football coaching staff members specifically um who were punished by the NCAA for sports gambling, including bets on the school's men's and women's basketball programs.
00:11:27
DJ
They will not face any criminal charges. But they made more than combined, and they made more than 6,200 online bets, totally more than $100,000 on games. And some of the bets were even for professional events.
00:11:38
DJ
And then of course, some were for college events. The coaches in question, One of them was nepotism. So the son of the defensive coordinator, John Hecock, his son is named Jace.
00:11:49
DJ
He ah did about 787 bets, totaling about $55,000. Another coach, again, loosely used term coach, um his name is Chase Clark. He was the assistant director of football equipment operations. He placed 2,305 bets, totaling about including 46 bets on men's and women's basketball.
00:12:10
DJ
And we love that he has failed upwards and he is now the assistant equipment manager for the Detroit lions. ah Love that for him. I wish I could get in trouble and get a promotion. Um,
00:12:21
DJ
And then we've got Michael Dreyer, who was, again, an assistant for equipment operations, placing 1,182 bets, totaling $11,000, including 25 bets on men's and women's basketball. He is now in sales for a sport good for a sporting goods company.
00:12:37
DJ
And then we have Kyle Highland, who did, he was a former football recruiting operations assistant. He placed 509 bets, totaling $6,000, eight on women's basketball, and is now eight bets on wins women's basketball and he is now the assistant director of football operations at the army. So again, these people are feeling upwards. Love that for them.
00:12:53
DJ
And then the last coach in question was Mason Williams. And he was again, and apparently they didn't have none to do over in the equipment department. Cause he is also in equipment, 1,455 beds, $11,000, 12 beds on men's women's basketball.
00:13:06
DJ
And now he is the head equipment manager at a place that I don't even know how to pronounce. But the point that I'm getting at is go do sports betting and you'll get a promotion.
00:13:17
DJ
i don't think that was a lesson.
00:13:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
But the real point is um they have nothing to do in Iowa. And like I know this is ah like a sort of long, drawn-out thing, but if you remember, some of the first athletes to get caught sports betting were iowa and iowa were at Iowa and Iowa State.
00:13:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
And like ah to the point where like one of the quarterbacks, it was actually Iowa State. The quarterback got like suspended or kicked off the team or something. And a freshman ended up playing. That freshman is still their quarterback because he turned out to be better than people thought.
00:13:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
But like, yeah, so like this is kind of like a continuation of other things. But it's just interesting that like Iowa and Iowa State keep coming up because clearly there's, I mean, you can only you can only tip over so many cows, I guess, before you start sports betting.
00:14:00
DJ
You know, Tipping over cows is insane, first of all, but apparently that is that that is ah that is a form of entertainment.
00:14:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
People do it. Or at least they try.
00:14:10
DJ
It was a form of entertainment here and ah in Texas as well, going and smacking cows' butts and seeing how fast they run. Anyway... um But yeah, so their names were turned over ah to the state's Department of Criminal Investigation because there's already an investigation that is ongoing into underage, excuse me, online sports wagering at different colleges within the states.
00:14:32
DJ
Dozens of athletes at Iowa and Iowa State were already charged and caught in this thing um with underage gambling, identity theft, those sorts of things. More than ah many of the athletes pled guilty, paid fines, charges were dismissed, things like that.
00:14:44
DJ
um And then more than three dozen athletes have joined in a civil lawsuit against the Department of Criminal Investigation, alleging that the agency had violated their rights and smeared their reputations. At the end of the day, you can be mad all day that your reputation is jacked. But again, it has always been known that sports betting is not allowed when you are an athlete, when you are a staff member, when you are a coach, you are whatever. So good luck on the lawsuit. But I'm sure that that that's not going to go very far because It's against the rules, like period.
00:15:11
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. Yeah.
Shador Sanders Prank Call
00:15:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
and and And one last, speaking of defensive coordinator Sun, one last piece of news.
00:15:20
Get Defensive Sports Network
um we figured We figured out who was pranking Shador Sanders.
00:15:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
The interesting thing about it is that there's a bunch of reports that other people were being pranked as well, but like no one has come out and said if he was pranking all of them, especially because the public apology was only to Shador,
00:15:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
But at least for Shador, we found out who was pranking him. It was the son. And it's funny because it's another J name. I think his name was Jackson.
00:15:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
um
00:15:53
Get Defensive Sports Network
It was the son or something like that. But it was the son of the Saints defensive coordinator. ah He...
00:16:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
so
00:16:02
DJ
It's the Atlanta Falcons.
00:16:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
it was the Falcons?
00:16:03
DJ
It was. I distinctly remember because the Atlanta Falcons had a terrible statement.
00:16:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
All right. Yeah, son... I don't know where I'm getting the Saints from. Son of the Falcons defensive coordinator. ah His dad left his work iPad open and unlocked around the house.
00:16:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
And his son went on it and got the number and decided to make a prank call. And I would just like to remind you all that this, despite, listen, I know this may be hard to believe.
00:16:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
I know you may struggle with this, but this was not a child. Despite the way that they're talking about him, He was 21 years old.
00:16:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
So, so, so I would just like to remind you all, you know, I know it's tough to hear from me that, you know, that this wasn't a poor little 13 year old kid, which if you listen to the media, that's what they would lead you to believe.
00:16:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
But no, this, this, this was, um, 21 year old adult, uh, old enough to drink, old enough to drive a car, old enough to go to the army, old enough to, to
00:17:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
probably graduate from college, right, or very close to it. um This was not a little kid making a stupid mistake. um Again, despite the reports. So, yeah, that that is another piece of news that we got.
00:17:17
Get Defensive Sports Network
um
00:17:17
DJ
Yes, his name is Jax Albrecht, whatever, however you say the last name. There's two individuals though who who did the prank. The only one who is speaking on it at the moment is Jax.
00:17:28
DJ
um But yes, they're very much a friend.
00:17:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
And it's probably because the other one was probably just a friend. And it's like, Jax is the one that got the number, of course.
00:17:35
DJ
Yeah. And so where you're getting the Saints from is that when they did the prank call, they claimed that they were the Saints organization when they called Shador. But
Prank Call Rules Discussion
00:17:44
DJ
Yes. And so the Atlanta Falcons have been fine. And then Jeff, the coach, the ah whose son committed the prank, has also been fine. That was the NFL's conclusion ah with it.
00:17:56
DJ
There's been a lot of discussion, obviously, about whether or not it this was a fair a punishment. I'm not going to get into that. But the Falcons team itself was fined $250,000. And fifty thousand dollars and defensive coordinat the defensive coordinator was fined $100,000 for failing to prevent the disclosure of confidential information.
00:18:12
DJ
um And then, of course, Jax took to social media to apologize to Shador Shador. spelling Shador's name incorrectly. um So, you know, love that.
00:18:23
DJ
And then of course, Jeff Ulbricht also addressed the situation and made an apology to the family and to the ownership team, to the ownership of the Falcons and all those other stuff and all those other things.
00:18:35
DJ
The NFL is, however, investigating the other prank calls that occurred during the draft as well, because as Jordan mentioned, there were other prank calls that happened and realistically like this shit's not fucking funny.
00:18:46
DJ
OK, and we don't need to be playing with people like that. um And so potentially more fines coming through or whatever the case is. Or a lot of people have discussing online that maybe we need to kind of do away with the team call thing and have the players find out who drafted them via the broadcast. And then the team call them afterwards to congratulate them.
00:19:06
DJ
um I don't know. That's just internet Internet discussion. But I kind of agree with that. I wanted to to hear your take on it.
00:19:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
um
00:19:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
about if it's a fair punishment.
00:19:19
DJ
No, like the whole, like, maybe they shouldn't call them before they get drafted thing. Like, let them find out where they got drafted at and then have the team call them afterwards.
00:19:28
Get Defensive Sports Network
No, I think that's dumb.
00:19:29
DJ
Okay, great. Thanks for calling me down.
00:19:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
um Well, I you I don't think you're dumb, but like, it's just it's just is it's just it's just not something that is typically ever a problem, really.
00:19:34
DJ
You said I was stupid. You said I have no brain. yeah
00:19:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
um And and it and for the and for the most for the most part, it happens simultaneously.
00:19:43
DJ
But it could potentially.
00:19:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, it like it doesn't really happen really before.
00:19:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
It's just there sometimes there's like a minor delay just because it takes time to communicate to the league and then for the league to get the journey jersey to Roger Goodell and then for him to make the walk to the stage and do the pick.
00:20:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
But like they put in the pick first and then they call.
00:20:04
DJ
Do all the things right, right.
00:20:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
So it's it's typically pretty simultaneous. Yeah. But like, yeah, no, i just think that they need to have, you know, don't take your work tablet home and let your son log into it.
00:20:18
DJ
Play around on it, right.
00:20:19
Get Defensive Sports Network
i think I think that's, you know, I think that's pretty simple. I mean, like I work in education and all of my devices have two multi-factor authentication because, i mean, even college students have it now, but colleges do it because there's a lot of personal information and things on that. I imagine...
00:20:38
Get Defensive Sports Network
The NFL has that as well. And if they don't, you probably should. So it's just a careless person being careless in front of his, was going to say something very mean, in front of his grown ass kid who, you know, thought that shit was funny.
00:20:55
Get Defensive Sports Network
don't know. Yeah. Yeah.
00:20:56
DJ
and indeed That will never be funny.
00:20:58
Get Defensive Sports Network
um
00:20:59
DJ
Thank you so much. that will never be funny.
00:21:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:21:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
So that's the news.
00:21:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
Um, we are going to take a quick break for the ads and then we will be right back.

00:22:56
DJ
At least, because we didn't really like talk deeply about
00:22:56
Get Defensive Sports Network
So, yeah, we we'll...
00:22:59
DJ
who was really selected because the Shador thing kind of overshadowed everything to be honest. But also like, we didn't really discuss the particulars of
00:23:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:23:09
DJ
who was drafted and who, what, where they are, what the fits are, those sorts of things. So we really wanted to kind of do a deep dive specifically into those Ohio state guys as 14 guys that got chosen. And then wanted to chit chat kind of about, you know, the guys to watch, um, for the upcoming season, which I'll let Jordan handle that.
00:23:24
DJ
Cause y'all know, I don't know, but starting with the guys to watch, right. Am I stupid? Is that what order we're doing it? Yes.
00:23:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
No, we're we're recapping.
00:23:32
DJ
Starting with recapping the draftees, cause I am stupid. Um,
00:23:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
Ohio State had 1, 2, 3, 4, 4. one two three four 1, 2, 3, 4. Emphasis on four first-round picks.
00:23:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
and i'm And I am putting an emphasis on four for two reasons. One, it was the most in the draft. Two, many draft pundits, including the ones that I respect, and there are very, very few that I respect, who really only had two Ohio State players going in the first round.
00:24:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
But it's interesting because earlier during the season, they had up to four or five. And so it was very interesting to kind of see like how players dropped out, right?
00:24:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like I, for a while... The defensive ends, JT Tuamalau and Jack Sawyer were like border around borderline first round picks. I think both of them were drafted in the third and the fourth.
00:24:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
Tyleek Williams was a first round pick. The YG Edmech Eggbuka was a first round pick. There was a bunch of players. And then it just sort of kind of dwindled and it didn't really make sense. You didn't really kind of understand why.
00:24:38
Get Defensive Sports Network
to where for a lot of people it got to the point where they only, exp oh, ah on some of the boards, One or both running back it was a first round pick. So there were like six or seven players that throughout the season and the early draft season were projected by different people. Right. It wasn't all six or seven at the same time, but had first round ah projections at some point.
00:25:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
And then as you got closer to the draft, it was essentially only Emeka Ikbuka, the wide receiver, and Josh Simmons, the um ah offensive tackle, ah the left tackle. So it was very happy to see, out for me at least, that it was four because I think all of the people drafted in the first round should have always been drafted in the first round.
00:25:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
And then, you know, the running backs, give or take, there was a chance that one of them was going to get in there and they didn't. So starting with the first round pick, the first player drafted, you could argue if he should have been first or second for Ohio state, but the other person that was sort of in this category had an injury and they're not exactly sure how he is and the injuries always drop you a couple of slots, depending on your talent, it can keep in the first round, which we'll get to, or depending on your talent, it could drop you out of the draft,
00:25:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
which is another player that happened for Ohio State. So first pick, Tampa Bay Bucs, 19th overall wide receiver, Emeka Ekbuka. I love this. personally.
00:26:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
um Just because, well, one, i don't think they needed a wide receiver. But, like, Baker Mayfield has gotten better as a quarterback.
00:26:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, he he was never bad, right? Like, he was never awful. he was never really at the point where you thought he was going to fall out the league. Like, for example, Johnny Menzel, who people tried to compare him to, but it was like...
00:26:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
I don't know. Baker's not my favorite quarterback, but he was always a real quarterback where I never thought Johnny Manziel was a real quarterback. But Baker has continued has continued to get better to the point where now he's he's decent. He's serviceable. yeah He's probably in the Kirk Cousins tier, maybe a little bit better.
00:26:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
The Jimmy Garoppolo... He's definitely better than Jimmy, but like that kind of um ah Ryan Tannehill kind of, he's going to be a starter for a while, but he needs some help.
00:26:53
Get Defensive Sports Network
Of course, like he's not your Aaron Rodgers, your Peyton Manning, who's going to like lead you to the playoffs by themselves. So like, I'm not sure if they needed a wide receiver, but some of the wide receivers are getting a little older. And also,
00:27:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
What quarterback doesn't want a shorthanded wide receiver who's going to get open, who's going to catch everything, who is going to be reliable? Is the Mekka Booker going to run a 4-2?
00:27:12
Get Defensive Sports Network
No. Is he going to have 1,800 yards? Probably not. But his biggest comp is... Amon Ross St. Brown for the Lions, who is their number one wide receiver, leads them in catches and yards every season.
00:27:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
And he probably won't do that right now, right? Because they have a Hall of Famer on their roster for at least a couple more years. But in three, four, five years, he could very easily, like, I expect him to be 100 catches, 900 to 1,200 yards a season, just over, hes just over reliable.
00:27:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
He's not flashy, but so yeah, I think, I mean, what quarterback wouldn't want, what quarterback wouldn't want a Mecca Guka?
00:27:45
DJ
He's going to catch the ball.
00:27:49
DJ
very um I don't like Baker Manfield. Next.
00:27:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
Minnesota Vikings, 24th overall, select Donovan Jackson. um Why don't you like Baker Mayfield again? It's just because of that.
00:28:01
DJ
I just dont don't like him.
00:28:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
Okay. um
00:28:04
DJ
And I don't like, yeah, i was like, I don't want to too much.
00:28:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
We're not going to โ nope, want to talk about it because you're not going to have โ yeah, you're not you're not going to make โ I think we've talked about this before, and you're not going to make me defend maker Baker Mayfield on this podcast, where sometimes it gets โ it sounds like I'm defending people because I disagree.
00:28:07
DJ
I just don't like his vibe. Yeah. yeah
00:28:13
DJ
Yeah, you don't have to. Well, because.
00:28:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
We're not going to do that today.
00:28:20
DJ
Yeah, I don't have any problem with his playing style, his talent.
00:28:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
But โ
00:28:24
DJ
I don't have any problem with with that. I'm never going to sit here and act like the man can't throw the damn ball like he can. I don't like how he is like off the field. That's that's my bigger thing. So that's I'm like in general, though, you know, yay.
00:28:34
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:28:38
Get Defensive Sports Network
I mean, we're not talking about Baker, We're talking about Amekek Buka. And it is yay for him.
00:28:41
DJ
Right, but like Emeka Agbuka's success is very heavily dependent on obviously Baker and all those other things.
00:28:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:28:49
DJ
Like they're intrinsically connected in that way. So that's why i was like, you know, love that for Emeka.
00:28:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
Not too wishing for Baker to fail. um Number 24 overall offensive lineman, Donovan Jackson.
00:29:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
Donovan Jackson, I mean, he made himself so much money. So much money. He was already a pretty good guard, right? he He has some things to work on, some stuff. But, like, he was like but a part of that was probably Ohio State didn't have a great offensive line coach.
00:29:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
He was...
00:29:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
um A really good guard. Like, he he was getting things at guard, and then our offensive tackle went down, and he played offensive tackle, and he allowed, i think, one sack.
00:29:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
I think he allowed one sack to Abdul Carter in his very first game playing offensive tackle, and if you need to be reminded, Abdul Carter went number two overall, or number three overall.
00:29:37
DJ
Is the best defensive player available?
00:29:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
In the draft? Yeah. So, you know, with that depending on what you... He went number three because Travis went... Depending on how you feel about Travis. But he's the best only defensive player.
00:29:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
like if you would Like, Travis is going to try to play both sides.
00:29:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
um
00:29:52
DJ
Oh, sorry. I forgot about Travis. I didn't even mean to say it.
00:29:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:29:54
DJ
I didn't even know what to be rude. But talking strictly defense, that's all you do.
00:29:55
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:29:58
DJ
Abdul Carter is obviously the best that was available.
00:30:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes. Yeah. So, he made himself a lot of money. The Minnesota Vikings needed help up the middle.
00:30:08
Get Defensive Sports Network
Literally...
00:30:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
This year, this offseason, they got a new center from the Colts. They got a new left guard from the Colts. And then they got Donovan Jackson.
00:30:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
So um I am and to um intimately familiar with all of their new offensive linemen because... They came from my two favorite teams.
00:30:28
DJ
They were on the cults.
00:30:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
But, um yeah, I think this is good for him. I think, you know, he's going to have a chance to start immediately. And how he does is on him, right? Offensive line is not easy.
00:30:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
It doesn't mean that you're going to translate. But I think he's probably going to translate. So, yeah, I mean, great for him.
00:30:46
DJ
Period. I love it. I mean, you can never have too much. um You can never have too many offensive. Too many offensive players too much. You can never have too much. So in the Minnesota Vikings, they needed help.
00:30:55
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. Yeah. Needed guards. Needed offensive line.
00:31:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:31:01
DJ
Who's the quarterback now?
00:31:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
Don't want to talk about it.
00:31:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
supposedly it's Supposedly, it's going to be J.J. McCarthy.
00:31:12
Get Defensive Sports Network
Which is a choice to make.
00:31:13
DJ
a Okay, well, let's move on from the Vikings. Oops, moving on.
00:31:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. You're talking about not liking a quarterback. um
00:31:25
DJ
Sorry. I hate that I even asked that question.
00:31:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
detroit Detroit Lions, 30th
Chiefs and Browns Draft Picks
00:31:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
overall. I said all offseason that the Detroit Lions were going to pick an Ohio State Buckeye. I did not pick the right one. I thought that they were going to get one of the defensive, one of the edge rushers.
00:31:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
Jack Sawyer, JT, because they felt like the type of player that they would want also felt like a need, but they determined that they also needed a D they needed, they just needed help on the defensive line.
00:31:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
And they got Tylee Williams and Tylee Williams is a dog like, like,
00:31:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
Tylek Williams is so good. He is a defensive tackle that Ohio State hasn't had in a while. And i not that he knows me or ever cares about this or whatever, but like I personally am just like proud of him because when he came, there were reports and rumors. And some of this coaches do to kind of get you to work harder.
00:32:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
There are reports and things about him being lazy, about him being overweight. And then it just like clicked for him and he became a dominant force and you couldn't stop him. Well-deserved.
00:32:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
think he's going to be great for the Lions. um
00:32:29
DJ
The Lions need some defensive depth for sure because Aiden Hutchinson.
00:32:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
There is...
00:32:32
DJ
They lost Aiden Hutchinson, which obviously they don't play the same position, but they need some defensive depth for sure.
00:32:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
Still.
00:32:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
And then the last first round pick, Kansas City Chiefs, 32 overall offensive tackles, Josh Simmons. That's a steal. I mean, literally before his injury, he was projected to be the the first offensive tackle well taken off the board.
00:32:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
And they let him fall to Patrick Mahomes, who hasn't had a left tackle in like three years.
00:32:59
Get Defensive Sports Network
um and just got just got bullied in the Super Bowl. So he's not...
00:33:05
DJ
Oh my God, butt kicked.
00:33:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
hey he got beat He got beat so badly in the Super Bowl he cut his hair. Like, you know what I'm saying? like
00:33:11
DJ
Can we talk about that for just a second though?
00:33:11
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, can't...
00:33:12
DJ
Because why did he have to call his own hair nappy?
00:33:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm not going to talk about that.
00:33:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm not going to talk about that. I agree with you. i We will be on that forever. i You know why he did it. I know why he did it. We don't have to move on. Yeah.
00:33:26
DJ
I just, I'm just saying like, that's insane. Like to talk about your own hair in that way, like that's insane. And yes, your hair was a mess. It was, but that was your hair. Like whatever, that was your hair.
00:33:37
Get Defensive Sports Network
But it wasn't a mess because it was quote unquote nappy. It was a mess because of how you wore it.
00:33:40
DJ
Nappy, exactly. It was a mess because you weren't taking care of it.
00:33:43
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. But not going to talk about that.
00:33:44
DJ
Like, put your Cantu curling cream in and call it a day.
00:33:45
Get Defensive Sports Network
Second round.
00:33:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:33:48
DJ
Yes, Kansas City Chiefs finally has somebody on the offensive ah on the offensive line that was obviously their biggest issue this entire year, why they did not win the Super Bowl. um So, shout out to them.
00:33:59
DJ
I am extremely excited about it. I actually thought that this next pick, I thought he was going in the first round, personally.
00:34:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
I did too.
00:34:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
I thought one of them would go.
00:34:05
DJ
But him going high second is still not crazy.
00:34:09
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:34:09
DJ
But Quinshawn Jenkins is the pick. He wins with the Cleveland Browns, running back. Loved him. I loved him all season. um So in the Browns, who even is there running back now? i don't even know who it is.
00:34:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
I have no idea because it doesn't seem like they're re-signing Nick Chubb. So their running back is Quinshawn Jenkins.
00:34:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
they have so They have someone on the roster.
00:34:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
It was the backup last year, or maybe it was the starting running back last year because Nick Chubb was injured.
00:34:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
They have a running back on the roster, and they're pairing that running back with Quinshawn.
00:34:41
DJ
I love it. I'm obsessed with it. um I hate everything that the Cleveland Browns has going on, but you know, it's a good fit.
00:34:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Speaking of a good fit that I also hate, um I mean, this is like a great...
00:34:56
DJ
A good fit that I hate is so us.
00:35:00
DJ
We love a contradiction on this show.
00:35:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, this is... I mean, it's a perfect fit. I just hate that this player is going to this team. But, like...
00:35:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
But, yeah. ah The New England Patriots um drafted Travion Henderson to pair with... um Oh, what is that boy's name?
00:35:19
DJ
Whoever that person is, hold on, I'll look it up
00:35:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
Drake May.
00:35:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
Drake May. Their quarterback, Drake May.
00:35:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. So, I mean, Trey amazing. Like, Trey is such a good running back. um He is the perfect, you know, running back to fit into a one-two punch. You saw that with Quinchon Jenkins.
00:35:37
Get Defensive Sports Network
So, it's great.
00:35:38
Get Defensive Sports Network
and and And I just want to take a quick second, right? And, like, this is going to sound so, like, boomer of me. And I am, i again, listen. I am not anti-transfer portal. I am not anti any any of that sort of stuff, right?
00:35:50
DJ
Are you sure? Are you positive?
00:35:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
and And being anti-transfer portal wouldn't make sense in this case because Quen Sean went to the transfer portal. I am anti people getting bad advice and not looking out for themselves.
00:36:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
Travion Henderson was a number one running back by himself. Quinchon Jenkins was a number one running back by himself. And Quinchon was looking for a new home because they were forcing him out.
00:36:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
He wanted to go to Ohio State. He knew that Trey was there. And he got good advice and made the adult decision to say, if I went to this team, I am going to perform well.
00:36:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
I am going to protect my body because I won't have 400 carries.
00:36:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm going to get exposure. He was at Ole Miss. He was going to get exposure. i'm good But I'm going to get a lot of exposure. And I may win a national championship.
00:36:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
Travion Henderson heard that as the number one running back and said, i am also going to get those things. So instead of me leaving and being mad and being jealous and being petty that they're bringing in another quality running back, I am going to be friends with him. We are going to work together. We are both going to up our draft stocks. We are both going to stay healthy. We are both going to have a great season.
00:37:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
And in so many cases, that doesn't happen, right? Like, Quinchon is legitimate competition for Trey. Like, they were two starting caliber running backs.
Synergy of Drafted Players
00:37:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
Trey could have easily taken that as disrespect. And so I just appreciate that they both were adult enough to see the benefit of them being there together.
00:37:23
DJ
Playing together. Yeah.
00:37:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
and not having that ego. And I want that more, right? Especially, there are not a million positions you can do that, of course, but running back is one of them.
00:37:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
And and you look at the league, how many solo running backs are there? First of all, there's no running back in the world that can get all of the carries. But at the same time, how many like true lead back players
00:37:45
Get Defensive Sports Network
30 carries a game are there anymore almost all of the nfl is is is split rooms right you may have one guy that gets 22 and the other one gets like 14 instead of them both getting 20 right which is what it was at ohio state but like
00:38:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
you you You sort of have โ like it's running back by committee for most teams. So I just wanted to say that I appreciate that, and I love that they had very similar stats.
00:38:09
Get Defensive Sports Network
They both had 1,000 yards. They both had 10-plus touchdowns, and then they got picked two picks away from each other. And, like, that is that is what that is supposed to look like.
00:38:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
And so um it's it's not โ
00:38:21
DJ
And there's a particular, ahead, sorry.
00:38:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
And I was just so like, the reason why I was going to say it was like a boomer take is like, I get having an ego. I get being upset when transfers come in. I get that. But like, and I am, I've never like, I'm never the person that's like, you have to be loyal to the team. I do believe that slightly more in college than the NFL and other professional sports, but I definitely don't even believe in in college because the coaches can leave whenever.
00:38:44
Get Defensive Sports Network
But i'm I'm just very pro, like really considering your future and making adult decisions and not just, you know, being offended by like everything that happens because Trey was there for three years. He could have easily been like, oh, you don't respect me.
00:38:59
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm leaving. And he had, look at what happened.
00:39:02
DJ
That would be dramatic.
00:39:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
So, but that's what they do.
00:39:03
DJ
That would be ah very dramatic.
00:39:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like that's, that is what they do.
00:39:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
That's, that's how so many people end up in the transfer portal anyways. And so, yeah, that, that was all maybe not as boomer as it sounded like, but yeah, I just really appreciate that that happened for them.
00:39:10
DJ
Oh yeah. That's what's yeah.
00:39:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
And then just how intertwined it was again, both a thousand yards. both 10 plus touchdowns they win they were alternating who basically led the game in the playoffs right like it was trey against texas right it was it was q against oregon he he bounced that dude's head off the freaking mat against notre dame like you know what i'm saying so it's just i i just thought that was great um
00:39:36
DJ
i would also say that is a testament to good coaching, right? Because that was, to me, when you do have two running backs that are that talented, it's easy to maybe just stick with one and kind of have the other as backup whatever, but it's really good coaching to be able to kind of figure out a way to rotate them in and out. And to your point, the NFL does operate with, especially running game by committee. So I think there's going to be a particular skill associated now with being that number one option versus being the number two option or being the guy that comes in to get the quick yards on the third down versus the guy that's going to come in and, you know, go get 20 yards real quick or whatever. Like there's there's different skills associated with that too. So I, I, I appreciate what you're saying as well, as far as like those two guys being as talented other as they are, we're able to find some synergy with that, but it's also a testament to how they were coached.
00:40:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes. Shout out to Coach Lott.
00:40:25
DJ
So period. Yeah. I was like I don't know who the offensive, um, coordinator is or the running back coaches but um yeah love it um hate that he's going to the patriots but you know can't be bothered with that um can't be but who even is the patriots coach now i don't even know after the debauchery with the black coaches i don't even know
00:40:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
Truly.
00:40:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
um woe Well, if you if if you want another Ohio State connection, it is, um oh my gosh. Former Titans head coach, former Titans head coach, Ohio State linebacker.
00:40:53
DJ
i remember now i'm starting to remember because it was like
00:40:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
And every Ohio State fan is going to scream at me for for forgetting his name right now.
00:41:01
DJ
not remembering. I know.
00:41:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
And i trust I promise you, I do know his name.
00:41:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
like But, you know, sometimes you get put on the spot.
00:41:07
DJ
And we talked about it because we were mad about them doing their fake ass interviews with the variable.
00:41:11
Get Defensive Sports Network
Mike Vrabel, yes.
00:41:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, and and and and my thing was just like, it was one of those things where it was it was tough because like, Vrabel earned and deserved the job and he was probably going to get the job regardless, but they didn't have to do the fake interviews like that.
00:41:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
And it's just like, a you know, like there are times where you're like, who the hell is that guy and how did he get this job?
00:41:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, it like wasn't it like wasn't an anti-Vrabel take as much as was an anti-Patriots take.
00:41:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
That was just really shady how they handled that.
00:41:38
DJ
Yeah. Because Rayville's a good coach from what I understand.
00:41:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, absolutely.
00:41:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, absolutely. No.
00:41:43
DJ
Yeah. it's So definitely not anything against him. I just think the Patriots organization, like, there's some times where, excuse my Boomer reference, you know, they show their slip a little bit.
00:41:54
DJ
And what I mean by that is, like, At the end of the day, a lot these organizations are fundamentally racist, period. That's why there's so many different rules and regulations and all those other things, because a lot of everything in America is racist.
00:42:06
DJ
So it's just annoying when they like show their slip like that, where they're like, well, we're being extra racist this time. Like, it's just like, all right, like, thank you. Next.
Colts and Cardinals Draft Picks
00:42:16
DJ
Anyway, speaking of next, a pick that I'll let you discuss, because I'm sure you're very excited about it being a c Colts fan.
00:42:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:42:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. Yeah. Second round, forty fifth overall ra pick. Defensive end JT Tumalau. um Perfect. I mean, especially because, like, the Colts have been so bad at drafting defensive, ah like, edges.
00:42:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
And here's the thing. I don't know if JT is going to be a 10-sack guy. He was never a 10-sack guy at Ohio State until his final year. So I don't know if he learned something or not.
00:42:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
but he jay But JT is a 12-year, injuries aside, is a 12-year defensive lineman.
00:42:46
DJ
I just had a great year.
00:42:53
Get Defensive Sports Network
He is always going to be good against the run. He is always going to to to to push the pocket. Is he going to get the sacks? I don't know. I don't know, right? don't know. But he's going to contribute.
00:43:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
He's going to be good. He is going to serve a purpose. He is a day one starter. and And if he ever takes it a step back, he is the the ideal ah rotational defensive end. And depending on the team, you can kick him inside, which some teams like to do on third down if you have a situational pass rusher because he can pass rush from inside and he can hold up against the run.
00:43:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
um It's just a great pick. And I love JT.
00:43:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
I love when Ohio State โ I love when the Colts draft Ohio State players. It doesn't always work out for us, but I love when the Colts draft Ohio State players.
00:43:41
DJ
period and speaking of defense i mean the next picks the next one two three four five six seven seven picks were defensive players um so about 110 picks later so we had all these guys who got picked within the first 50 picks and then about 110 picks later they just start picking off the ohio state defense they just start they're just like we need this guy we need this guy we need this guy this guy this guy this guy and that's a testament to The defense, actually, if I'm being, if I'm not mistaken, I think the defense actually was the majority of the picks.
00:44:09
DJ
Oh, it was pretty even actually between the 14.
00:44:09
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, I think we had like...
00:44:12
DJ
It's like eight and six, it looks like.
00:44:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
Okay.
00:44:14
DJ
Yeah, one, two, three, four, five, six offensive players. Yeah. So that's just a testament to Ohio State's defense, right? It's a testament to that whole entire room, really. And I know, what was it that you complained more about with the coaching?
00:44:30
DJ
You complained about the offensive coaching, whether the defensive coaching, didn't you?
00:44:34
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like during the season.
00:44:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
I complained about both. um There were some problems with the defensive coaching that got fixed at the end, um which is how we how we ah rant how we won the the national championship.
00:44:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
But I would say but some of my bigger problems were on the offense, probably. um
00:44:53
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, so to just speed through this, because we don't have to stick on everybody, um Arizona Cardinals, 115 overall, linebacker Cody Simon, loved that pick. I didn't think he was going to get drafted that early.
00:45:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
And it is the fourth round, but like like he really earned himself money, man.
00:45:09
Get Defensive Sports Network
and as as someone And this is just to show that players learn and get better. And it's also to show that you can be critical and provide grace. I played linebacker. I love linebacker. I've said it before.
00:45:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
if I had the free time, all the free time in the world and like to write because I don't, I would do what other people have done and create a website dedicated just to linebackers. There's someone who is now in the NFL media space who does that for offensive line. There's someone in and the NFL media space who does that for quarterbacks. There's someone in the media NFL media space that does it for wide receiver.
00:45:43
Get Defensive Sports Network
And it was literally just people doing blogs. And now they're all over. They're going to the draft. They're they're getting like access right there on some of the podcasts that I listen to. Like, So, like, people are making a name for themselves doing these things. And the reason I bring this up is that I'm just saying that this is how much I love linebackers.
00:46:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
And I was critical of Cody Simon in the beginning because he just he wasn't good.
00:46:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
And then he turned himself into a fourth-round pick, which for a linebacker is a good pick, and he could be a longtime starter in the NFL. So very, very happy for him and for his development. And shout-out to Coach Laurinaitis because part of the reason he probably wasn't good is because our linebacker coach sucked.
00:46:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
And then we got Ohio State legend James Laurinaitis, and magically our linebackers got better <unk> and our recruiting got better. Crazy how that happens when you hire good coaches. um
00:46:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
Next pick, Carolina Panthers safety, Lathan Ransom. Great, solid player. He, in my opinion, should have been drafted higher, but the Panthers got them a stud. um Pittsburgh Steelers, 123 overall. Jack Sawyer, that's just nasty.
Rams and Steelers Draft Picks
00:46:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, that's just nasty. I hate that it's the Steelers, but he's going to be so good in their defense. um he He fits exactly what they're looking for. He's going to be great for them. ah Fifth round, Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Ty Hamilton.
00:47:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
If you really, really pay attention to the NFL draft and or if you pay attention to the Rams, they went heavy on defense last year. They drafted two defensive players who were teammates at Florida State.
00:47:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
I believe Jared Verse won the defensive player the year. They are still trying to replace Aaron Donald by committee because you cannot replace Aaron Donald. And so they needed another defensive tackle and Ty Hamilton is is a good defensive tackle. he's ah He's an OG defensive tackle.
00:47:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm going to eat a lot of blocks. You may not know my name, but like I'm going to make a name for myself.
00:47:37
DJ
I'm gonna that. Yeah. Yeah.
00:47:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
like i like People who pay attention will recognize your worth, but he's not. He's a true nose guard. like Unless you're freaking Endomic and Sioux or something like that, most nose guards don't you know get a lot of name recognition.
00:47:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
ah Buffalo Bills take Jordan Hancock, cornerback. I'm very glad he got drafted. I think he is severely...
00:48:08
Get Defensive Sports Network
underrated He, in my opinion, was the key to Ohio State's defense because he could play three positions for Ohio State. And if you don't have someone in that position, your you can't do all the things that you want to do.
00:48:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
I don't know. if If Jim Knowles were still our defensive coordinator, I would be really worried about that position this year.
00:48:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
i don't know how our new defensive coordinator's defense is going to run, so maybe that won't be as integral. But in Jim Knowles' defense, he was... the key to it. he He really did a lot for us and did not get recognized for that.
00:48:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
And then Arizona Cardinals went back to the Ohio State well with cornerback Denzel Burke. Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth round went back to the Ohio State well with quarterback Will Howard. And unless they get Aaron Rodgers, and even if they get Aaron Rodgers, there's a good chance that by midseason, Will Howard is the Steelers' starting quarterback.
00:48:58
DJ
He is going to be starting. Yeah, for sure.
00:49:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
And if they don't get ah Aaron Rodgers, he's definitely going to be starting because he's better than Mason Rudolph. I don't care what you say. He's better than Mason Rudolph.
00:49:09
Get Defensive Sports Network
And that's 14. Somehow we did not get another one, but sort of the notable undrafted free agent signings. Arizona Cardinals get offensive lineman Josh Fryer. He is reuniting with Ohio State ah offensive line coach Justin Fry.
00:49:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
Why you didn't just pick him in the seventh round so he could break the record, I don't know. And then Cincinnati Bengals get Seth McLaughlin.
00:49:32
DJ
Jordan will die on that hill.
00:49:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
I will. Cincinnati Bengals get Seth McLaughlin, undrafted free agent. And simply his injury just happened too late. ah He is a good player, but center only players are undervalued.
00:49:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
And his injury happened too late where he's probably not going to be ready for the start of the season. And so he fell out, but should have been drafted, but whatever.
00:49:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
and that's it.
00:49:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
That's, that's the, that's the, that is the recap.
00:49:59
DJ
That's the whole slate.
00:50:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
I think it's hard.
00:50:03
DJ
We can just like, ah go ahead. Sorry.
00:50:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
I didn't say it's it's kind of cheating, but my favorite pick, of course, is JT to allow to the Indianapolis Colts. My second favorites would be Josh Simmons to the Chiefs, even though, you know, we don't need to further the Chiefs dynasty.
00:50:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
And I really wish that I could love the running back picks, which is like, I just don't like the teams that they went to.
00:50:25
DJ
I don't like the teams that they're on, but I do love.
00:50:27
Get Defensive Sports Network
Not for them. Like, it's good for them. it just, like, it's hard to, like, I can't, I've never been a Browns fan, even though I'm from Northeast Ohio, but I can't even, like, passively root for the Browns like I used to because gross.
00:50:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, the stench on them is disgusting.
00:50:40
DJ
They're just a gross organization.
00:50:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
And how could you ever be a Patriots fan if you're not from New England?
00:50:45
DJ
I'm, I'm, I'm rooting for Will Howard for sure.
00:50:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes.
00:50:50
DJ
I'm rooting for him. So that's probably one of my favorite picks.
00:50:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
I also don't like the Steelers, but, like, whatever.
00:50:55
DJ
I don't like the Steelers either, but I like them more than the other two teams we just mentioned. So I'm rooting for Will Howard for sure. cause the Steelers have been on life support. So I think that he'll be able to come in and actually like make a difference early and then
00:51:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
and And with him, he'll at least get a shot, right? if he's not it if he's not if hes right like If he's not an NFL starter, he's not an NFL starter, right?
00:51:09
DJ
He'll get a chance, exactly. He won't just be a professional well backup.
00:51:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
like We don't know.
00:51:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
And he may not be.
00:51:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
But he's going to get a chance to find out because the Steelers really need a quarterback.
00:51:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
And that for someone like him where it's sort of borderline if he's a starter or not, That's perfect. and And this is, yeah, I don't mean to blaspheme because much better arm talent, much better like ah mental aptitude, but like the Steelers had Ben Roethlisberger, who also was a big, tall, heavy quarterback who couldn't run.
00:51:28
DJ
He needs a team that's going to take that risk on him.
00:51:45
Get Defensive Sports Network
right And no right no, this coach wasn't the head coach for all of Roethlisberger, but he was there for the second half of his career.
00:51:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
So if there's anyone who knows how to work with a quarterback like that as well,
00:51:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
It's them. And so, again, he is not Big Ben.
00:52:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
Big Ben had some had some traits that Will does not have, of course, right?
00:52:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
but but But, you know I'm saying?
00:52:06
DJ
Only eque only bigmin had those traits. Yeah.
00:52:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
like I think that's a solid landing spot for him. And even if they get Rodgers, he's probably going to go quick to be on McAfee's show or get injured. So, like Will is going to get a chance at some point, be it this year or next year, to see if he's actually a starting quarterback.
00:52:27
DJ
And that is why that's mine.
00:52:27
Get Defensive Sports Network
And if he's not, he's going to be a 15-year backup. Like, mean.
00:52:30
DJ
Period. I mean, maybe not. Because again, those guys who we thought were going to be like, okay, we don't know who what they're going to turn out to be have been the stars lately.
00:52:38
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. And and and he has he has the he has a couple of things going for him to get a second chance, um including his mental makeup and his handshake, which is a joke, but also they they love a strong handshake.
00:52:50
DJ
They love, ah we know.
00:52:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
They love a strong handshake.
00:52:52
DJ
But that's why he's my personal favorite because I think out of everybody, ah like who's been drafted, he has the highest chance of like kind of being that guy that's like, immediately makes a difference. Like the rest of these guys, like they're going to, they're going to be contributors as time goes on, but they're defensive players. Like no team, but like they're defensive players. They're going to contribute as time goes on.
00:53:11
DJ
um But yeah, so I love the Will Howard pick. I'm not watching the Bucs, but when, if if the Bucs play the Cowboys this year, I'll be looking forward to seeing Emeka. um And then ah yeah, don't love the teams that the running backs are on, but love, love that.
00:53:26
DJ
I fell in love with Quinn Sean this year. So, you know, again, won't be watching the Browns unless they play the Cowboys.
00:53:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:53:32
DJ
But I did fall in love with him a little bit.
00:53:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
as
00:53:35
DJ
So I love that for him.
00:53:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
I think my, I think, and I'm going to mess, I'm going to butcher this joke, but I love the jokes about Ohio State's ah running back room because like, it was basically like Ohio State's two running backs are like, Lord grant me the strength to to be running back.
00:53:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
And then the other one was like, you shouldn't have tested me. Like, I shoot everybody out.
00:53:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
It was just like, it was and it's hilarious.
00:53:59
Get Defensive Sports Network
Because like, I'm going to, in case you haven't seen this, I'm going to send you two of their Instagram posts. But like, Travion Henderson was very much like, thank you, Lord Jesus, for giving me the opportunity to to share your grace on the football field.
00:54:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
And Travion Henderson was like, I can't believe that nigga tested me. i i like it was just It was just hilarious, to like like the but difference in them, but it just it worked perfectly.
00:54:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
um So yeah, they were they were fun together. I'm i'm a big Quenchon Jenkins fan. um And yeah.
00:54:31
DJ
I just love his name too like that's a good strong name that's that that his mother or his father I don't know who named him they were like this one right here like I live for it um do we want to jump into a
00:54:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:54:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:54:46
DJ
Quick little overview of players to watch since we are running up on time a little bit, but at least want to give you guys like a couple of guys on the Ohio State, on the current Ohio State roster to watch. Of course, the most obvious one being Mr. Caleb Downs.
Future Draft Prospects
00:55:02
DJ
Need I say more? i feel like he's a household name at this point, but...
00:55:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. For 2026. Yeah.
00:55:06
DJ
I didn't know if you wanted to just do a quick little rundown of like, okay, here are the guys to watch. They're saying right now in the way too early draft projections for 2026, they are saying that there are 16 potential draft entrants for Ohio State ah to be looking for in the 2026 draft.
00:55:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
ah twenty twenty six
00:55:23
DJ
So I'm not going to name all 16, but Caleb Downs is, of course, the one who is the headliner for that group.
00:55:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, I would just say safeties don't get drafted in the first round, and they definitely don't get drafted in the top 15 picks unless you're Caleb Downs, unless you're Minka Fitzpatrick, unless ah you're the guy who went to the Bears, unless you're the guy who went to the Ravens.
00:55:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
can't think of the names right now.
00:55:50
DJ
I know who you're talking about, but I can't think of their names.
00:55:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
But, i did yeah, Kyle Hamilton is one of them, absolute stud.
00:55:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
He's the one that's on the Ravens. and the guy that is on the Bears, I can't think his name right now, but he played at Penn State, also a stud. Caleb Downs is a generational safety prospect, and like who am i right? But at least in my experience,
00:56:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
podcasting history, you know that I fight against the word generational. So whether you think I'm right or wrong or crazy, the fact that I would use it tells you the type of player that I think he is and that everyone thinks he is.
00:56:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
He's projected a top 10 pick at safety. That's all you need to know.
00:56:28
DJ
At safety. At safety. Okay.
00:56:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes.
00:56:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
some Some other players to watch, Sonny Stiles, linebacker, he is going to get drafted. First of all, again, you can learn and you can grow. Linebacker is one of the hardest positions to play on the field. Sonny Stiles looked horrible the first two or three games of the year, and then he learned how to play the position on top of his God-given talents, and he was a menace.
00:56:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
Dude is 6'4", 235. He's probably going to run a four four
00:57:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
he like I'm not going to say he's a first-round pick because there's some things he has to work on. right and so it's going to be For him, it's going to be like if he does the linebacker things well enough, they'll draft them first round because of the size and things.
00:57:17
Get Defensive Sports Network
But if he doesn't, you know he still has to protect prove that perfect some of the linebacker things.
00:57:22
DJ
Yes, because he also is not originally a linebacker.
00:57:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
but the
00:57:24
DJ
He did start off as a safety.
00:57:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
No, he played safety. So, and and and in high school, he started off as the ultimate weapon.
00:57:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
and and and and this is And this is a minor gripe, and I get it.
00:57:35
Get Defensive Sports Network
I played football in Ohio. I know what it's like, right? When you just have one player and you don't have anyone else. But one of the toughest things about high school sometimes is when a player is too good, they don't teach them how to play football.
00:57:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
They just let them do whatever.
00:57:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
And then it takes them some time to learn how to play football.
00:57:50
DJ
Yeah. That happens in Texas too.
00:57:53
Get Defensive Sports Network
And so it's just kind of like... But he's learning, and i if he his growth was so exponential last year. I'm so excited for him this year. um Next player, for sure, first-round pick.
00:58:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
He's going to be like the seventh wide receiver drafted in the first round in the last like five or six years, Carnot
00:58:12
DJ
He'll be the fifth in the row in a row. If that happens as well.
00:58:17
Get Defensive Sports Network
Tate.
00:58:18
DJ
Cardinal Tate, sorry. i said that over what you said, but yes, Cardinal Tate will be the fifth in a row.
00:58:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
So my numbers my numbers were off. He will be... on.
00:58:28
Get Defensive Sports Network
Was it five and four years? I think, okay, so he will be the sixth in five years because one year we had two.
00:58:35
Get Defensive Sports Network
So we've had four straight drafts, but one of the drafts we had two first round picks. So right now we've had five wide receivers taken in four straight drafts. He will be the sixth receiver taken and in the first round in the fifth straight draft.
00:58:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
And he is going to be a first round and prospect.
00:58:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
um I mean, he's...
00:58:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
he's
00:58:53
Get Defensive Sports Network
I was going say he's freaking six three like And this is the thing people have complained about Ohio State. Why did you see quote unquote complained? Right? Like Chris Alave is like Jackson Smith-Ajigba JSN, that's Jackson Smith-Ajigba.
00:59:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
ah five eleven six foot ah js in a that's jack smith but A Mekka Ibuka is 6'1". For a couple of years, Ohio State hasn't had the 6'2", 6'3", outside wide receiver.
00:59:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
we got it with carneo We got it with Carnell, and Lord knows we have it with Jeremiah Smith.
00:59:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
so so
00:59:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
um Where some of the other ones were like, quote-unquote, borderline, because it depended on if you cared about the size, he has all the talent and the size for Sean Pickett.
00:59:34
DJ
Period. 52 passes, 52 catches, 733 yards, four touchdowns in his first year as a starter.
00:59:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
And he was the number three option.
00:59:40
DJ
um And he was behind Jeremiah Smith, like be for real.
00:59:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
And Emeka Ikbuka.
00:59:46
DJ
And the, and the Mecca. So now it's just him and Jeremiah.
00:59:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
So...
00:59:50
DJ
Don't make me mad. 100% first round pick.
00:59:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:59:53
DJ
No questions asked. um Because as you guys know, obviously Jeremiah Smith is not eligible until 2027. So yeah.
00:59:58
Get Defensive Sports Network
with unfair i mean i'm thankful but unfair for everybody else um yeah uh another one ah to pay attention to max claire tight end tight end is hard because some of the tight ends drafted you're just like ew you like you didn't do anything but they love the traits like colston loveland to me was never impressive but they loved him no pun intended and he was the first tight end taken off the board max claire
01:00:03
DJ
Right. Right. Involved. Correct. Yes.
01:00:28
DJ
Yeah. Strong handshake, good eye contact, you know.
01:00:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, Max Clare, he was a tight end that was productive at Purdue. 51 passes for 685 yards and four touchdowns.
01:00:37
Get Defensive Sports Network
That's a great season for a tight end. He is going to Ohio State to hopefully do the same thing. And I think he is going he's probably going to break Ohio State's tight end records, which is not hard because we don't throw to a tight end.
01:00:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
But when you have a young quarterback, he's...
01:00:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
like like CJ Stroud didn't need to throw to a tight end when you have our wide receivers and you can fit the ball in wherever the young quarterback is probably going to need to throw to him a little bit more, especially early in the season.
01:01:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
So i don't, he does have a chance to be a first round pick, but tight end is hard. You never know, but he's, he's definitely going to be drafted for sure.
01:01:10
DJ
High, very high. But they're basically, they are projecting him as the top tight end, and that as potentially the top tight end in the 2026 draft class.
01:01:19
DJ
um So if he puts up good numbers and he actually is, if he puts up good numbers as far as on the catching and running end, but he's also a really good blocker, I mean, we could definitely see him going like late in the first round for sure.
01:01:19
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:01:30
DJ
um but it but But really when it comes to tight end and picking tight ends, that one to me is so dependent on like team needs too, like
01:01:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
01:01:37
Get Defensive Sports Network
And traits, yeah. It's just...
01:01:38
DJ
It's so dependent on that because it's not as easy as like wide receiver, running back, whatever, but you could just add them to the room. like The team is going to really have to need a tight end ah to pick them in the first round.
01:01:48
DJ
But if a tight end is going in the first round, it'll be Max Clare.
01:01:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, and...
01:01:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, and at six, like I could see him being, depending on how the year works, like I could see him being a pick for the Chiefs or the 49ers because they eventually they're going to need a tight end, but it's hard to project who needs a tight end.
01:02:01
DJ
Yeah, for sure. They ain't got nobody.
01:02:05
DJ
Yeah, and if the Cowboys stink it up again, we definitely need a tight end because we ain't got nobody.
01:02:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
But it doesn't matter.
01:02:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:02:10
DJ
We just have, oh my gosh, why did his name just leave my spirit? We have one, we have one. um i don't know why his name just left my spirit, but if the Cowboys stink it up like we did again, we definitely should be picking up a tight end because we're going to need one.
01:02:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. um Just some other names that we won't stick on. Ethan Oneonwa, I think that's how it's said. um
01:02:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
African names are typically pronounced exactly how they're spelled. That's one of the easy things about them.
01:02:34
Get Defensive Sports Network
So I think it's...
01:02:34
DJ
They don't say i you don't ever say the I sound in African names.
01:02:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, I think i think it's Oneonwa.
01:02:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
ah He's an offensive tackle, 6'6", 335.
01:02:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
Davidson Igbenosan, cornerback, he's probably going to get drafted around the the same um place as the other cornerbacks. The only thing with Davidson is he's huge. So that could pick...
01:02:51
DJ
six two one ninety three
01:02:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
That could... that could like make him go up higher if he stops holding, which is his biggest thing.
01:02:58
Get Defensive Sports Network
um A running back, CJ Donaldson, no idea where he's going to get taken, but he'll probably be drafted somewhere. Another tight end who's going to be a fourth or fifth round pick, Wilkak Merrick. Now, the biggest name to know as like, where the hell is this guy going to go? We don't know. It's CJ Hicks.
01:03:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
And the reason why I say that, you know who used to play linebacker before they became a full-time pass rusher?
01:03:21
DJ
A full-time patch rusher?
01:03:25
DJ
Who is a full-time patch rusher?
01:03:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
ah just I'll give you a hint. You said his name earlier today. Very effusively.
01:03:30
DJ
I said his name on the show already.
01:03:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:03:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
Very high pick. You had some good things to say about him.
01:03:35
DJ
Oh my gosh. From when we were just talking about the prospects?
Potential Pass Rushing Talent
01:03:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
Not Ohio State.
01:03:40
DJ
Or excuse me, when we were just talking about the 2025 picks?
01:03:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. Yeah. Draft pick. Not Ohio State.
01:03:44
DJ
I'll snap. Hold on, let me at least get a second to go back and look at the names.
01:03:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
think No, it's not Ohio State.
01:03:52
DJ
Who was I talking about?
01:03:53
Get Defensive Sports Network
think who did you who Who did you say, who what defensive name did you say in this draft that you talked about very highly of?
01:04:02
DJ
Bro, I actually do not know.
01:04:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
Abdul Carter.
01:04:04
DJ
Abdul Carter, oh, I was like, I'm so stupid. Like, who was I just...
01:04:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
Abdul Carter.
01:04:10
DJ
Abdul Carter started off as a linebacker, excuse me, as a defensive end and then became...
01:04:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
No.
01:04:15
DJ
No, am I saying it backwards?
01:04:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes.
01:04:18
DJ
He started off as a linebacker and then became a defensive end.
01:04:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
Abdul Carter, sorry yes. Yes.
01:04:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
He started off as a linebacker and was not a good linebacker, became a defensive end. Penn State, I also think he became a ah full-time pass rusher his senior year.
01:04:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
I don't think he was a full-time.
01:04:34
Get Defensive Sports Network
Sorry, he was a three-year player. So, yeah, he he's basically on the same timeline as C.J. Hicks. Abdul Carter was a full-time pass rusher for one year.
01:04:43
Get Defensive Sports Network
CJ Hicks has a time, like, and I am not saying he's going to be that good. Don't get me wrong.
01:04:49
DJ
Yeah, of course. Yeah.
01:04:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
But I identified, because again, i like linebackers, Abdul Carter, CJ Hicks, and I can't think his name right now, but he's the linebacker at LSU. And I said all three of them should not play linebacker.
01:05:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
they Harold Perkins Jr. They are very, they're clearly pass rushers. The best thing that they did was blitz and rush the passer. the passor
01:05:12
DJ
Right. So just make them pass rushers.
01:05:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
And that is exactly what Penn State did. Abdul Carter, number three overall. It took Ohio State way too long, but that's what they're doing now.
01:05:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
I say this to say, if it works out for him, He has a chance to go from a quote-unquote nobody to a first-round pick because he has all the talent, he has all the skills, he has the size, but I don't know.
01:05:38
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm not saying he's going to be Abdul Carter. I'm just saying he's a name to watch as someone who could be a surprise first-round pick if it works out for him. And then just to finish the list very quickly, Caden Curry, defensive end.
01:05:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
ah Lorenzo Stiles, cornerback. ah Jermaine Matthews, he's probably going to go to the draft because he's basically been a three-year starter. Cornerback, he has a chance to be a first or second-round pick. King out of Jackson, defensive end.
01:06:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
If he goes out, but he may not because it's going his first year starting.
Ohio State's Draft Legacy
01:06:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
Bo Atkinson, defensive end, he's probably not going to go out. Arvel Reese, oh my God. ah this Talk about a linebacker.
01:06:13
DJ
Man, 307 defensive snaps, and he had 43 tackles, three and a half sacks. Jesus Christ, he's 238, and he's only been starting for two years.
01:06:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
this This is a lot. He hasn't even started. He was the backup.
01:06:28
DJ
ah Two years? it so to Oh, it's saying two years as a starter. Sorry, I'm reading too fast.
01:06:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
Right. If he played for two more years at Ohio State, he's a first-round pick.
01:06:37
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, just straight up. and If he plays for two years, he's a first-round pick. We don't know if he will, but he's very good.
01:06:44
Get Defensive Sports Network
um Brandon Ennis, another wide receiver. So those are those are some names to sort of pay attention to. Some of them we don't know if they're going to come out because of eligibility and different things like that. But um i don't think Ohio State is going to be in the position to break the record.
01:06:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
But I will tell you that in 2027, they probably will break the record because there's going to be a bunch of offensive linemen. There's going to be like four offensive linemen drafted in that draft if they all stay.
01:07:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
And then, of course, you have the potential of like if Kenyatta stays another year, if Jermaine stays another year, Armel Reese stays another year, Brendan Innes stays another year, and then ah you have โ
01:07:22
DJ
All of them going in 2027.
01:07:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
Jeremiah, then you have Jeremiah Smith and you and you have some of the other players.
01:07:23
DJ
Yeah. Yeah. yeah Whoever the quarterback Yeah.
01:07:27
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. So, um but yeah, you know, that's that's Ohio State.
01:07:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
Ohio State is probably going to have somewhere between eight and 10 players drafted as they do every year, two or three first round picks as they do every year. And they have some players, Like running back CJ Donaldson, like tight end Max Clare, like offensive ta tackle Ethan Oneonwa, like Jermaine Matthews, and then lastly CJ Hicks, where this year is going to be very dependent.
01:07:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
And at least one of them, in my opinion, is going to work their way into a first round pick, but two or three could put themselves into the competition into the conversation with a really good year. Because one thing about the NFL, they draft one-year wonders all the time.
01:08:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
from Ohio State, from Alabama, from Georgia, from Texas, from these schools, because it's hard it's hard to it's it's hard to get on the field at these places.
01:08:10
DJ
every day of our lives, they love a one-year wonder.
01:08:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
So if you've done if you've done enough as a backup and then you have a great one year as a starter, they'll draft you high.
01:08:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
So, yes.
01:08:22
DJ
Because the programs also just are historically known to hoard good players. So the one-year wonder concept comes from the fact that it's like you also were a part of a good culture.
01:08:31
DJ
It's not like you just had this great year at, you know, no shade like Boise State, like some random place. You had a good year at one of the best programs in the nation.
01:08:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes.
01:08:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes.
01:08:39
DJ
Yes, we're going to draft you.
01:08:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yep.
01:08:40
DJ
Like, that's that's that's a no-brainer. So, yeah, but for some of these guys, they just need one year to just show what they can do. And then, you know, we're having conversations about them going in the first or second round for sure.
Focus on Ohio State
01:08:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
hundred percent 100%. And that's that's the show. ah You know, Ohio State heavy. Before we get into our two-minute warning, I would just like to warn you. but that I'm just playing.
01:09:03

01:10:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm looking at the wrong thing. I will go first because mine is not sports related.
01:10:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
And then I'll let you and and finish this out. It is a officially graduation season. I have two things to say about graduation season. One, one, please, for the love of all things holy, stop posting graduation throwbacks.
01:10:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
It is not your graduation season. It is for the people who are currently graduating.
01:10:53
Get Defensive Sports Network
But it especially if it's been over five years. I'm sorry. You don't get 10 years to celebrate your bachelor's. lose I'm sorry. You do not get 10 years to celebrate your bachelor's.
01:11:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
Stop taking the shine from the people who are currently graduating. You have a degree. You have a job. And you have depression because of a recession. We get it.
01:11:12
Get Defensive Sports Network
You don't need to stop. This is for the new graduates. Stop posting your pictures. Post that in freaking June. Like, why are you posting your pictures around May? You already did it. Thank you.
01:11:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
The more important piece, congratulations to all graduates. i don't care if it's high school. I don't care if it's an associate's, bachelor's, bachelors master's, i don't trade school, EDD, PhD, MD, certificate.
01:11:39
DJ
Certifications, whatever.
01:11:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
If you are graduating, if you are getting a cap and gown, congratulations.
01:11:45
Get Defensive Sports Network
That is major. um I hope that you are all...
01:11:48
DJ
And if you're black, even more congratulations.
01:11:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes, it's hilarious that I always say this as someone who does not like to celebrate his own graduations. I hope that you're celebrating. I hope that you're having a graduation party. I hope you're getting drinks with friends. If you're old enough and or have the money, I hope you take a trip, a vacation, a weekend away.
01:12:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
um But congratulations to all graduates of all varieties. And if you're listening to this show and you're not the graduate, but you have a son, daughter, cousin, niece, nephew, ah significant other.
01:12:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
If anyone in your life is graduating, tell them that we said congratulations as well.
01:12:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
I love graduation season as someone that that that as someone that works in education. Graduation season is my favorite, which is hilarious because I don't give a single ah singular fuck about any of my graduations, but everyone else's, love that for you.
01:12:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
Congratulations. And I hope you get a job or whatever, whatever's next, whether it's a job, it's grad school, it's the promotion, whatever you went to school for, or it's getting into college. If you're high school, right? I hope you get into the college ah so trade school, whatever it is, whatever's next, wishing you success. Congrats on graduation.
01:13:00
DJ
Oh my gosh, that's so wholesome. The only thing that I have to say, and realistically, if you have been listening to this show every week, you should absolutely know what the hell it is that I'm
WNBA and Nike Commercial
01:13:10
DJ
about to say. And that is that the W is back, people. The WNBA is back.
01:13:15
DJ
If you don't like my WNBA updates, i don't know why you've been listening this whole time because you will be getting them, period, point blank.
01:13:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
Whoa, don't say that.
01:13:24
DJ
I don't know why you're listening to the show because I'm going to keep y'all up to date on the W. The preseason quite literally just started two days ago, so there's really nothing not much to um report on at the moment. I mean, there's been some things that have gone on, and, you know, Caitlin Clark's fandom is now saying that Caitlin Clark is better than everybody because more people go to her games, which is like nobody cares about attendance numbers, number one, but nobody cares about attendance numbers for preseason games. Like, they really were like, oh, yeah, like, Angel Rees went back to LSU, but she didn't have as many people.
01:13:54
DJ
Angel Rees has a championship. Anyway, so the W is back.
01:13:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
Thank you.
01:13:58
DJ
Get prepared to be sick of me. The season officially starts on May 16th, but the preseason games are on and the WNBA is giving everybody free access to the league pass for the entirety of the preseason.
01:14:09
DJ
So you can go in there, you can download the app, you can watch all the games. in the pre-season for the pre-season and then once may 16 hits may 16th i do believe the wmba league passes 40 bucks that is cheaper than your groceries you should all be able to go grab the league pass for 40 bucks most of the games will be on ion television so if you already have cable you should be able to turn them on on ion because of course the wmba is not good they are not good at business and so most of their espn uh games are going to be Indiana Fever games, but the rest of them will be on ION.
01:14:37
DJ
um And then my other two-minute warning, which is related, is that Asia Wilson just released, well, not Asia Wilson, but yke Nike just released their Asia Wilson commercial yesterday. It is probably one of the most brilliant commercials that I personally have ever seen, besides the commercial that they did for the Super Bowl where they had the you know the but all of the female athletes in it.
01:14:56
DJ
This commercial is so brilliant.
01:14:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
Spectacular.
01:14:59
DJ
Have you seen it, the Asia Wilson one?
01:15:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
Not yet. I'm going to see it, though. going to look for it.
01:15:02
DJ
It is so brilliant. It is so irreverent. It is so everything that as a young black woman, as a little black girl, it it just ties in everything that i have ever known about my experience as, as this type of person.
01:15:18
DJ
And it just makes me so like, I know a lot of people felt like her shoe should have came out sooner or it should have been this or should have been that, but you can tell that there's just so much love and care and detail that her and Nike are really putting into this for it to be truly hers and i just love it and you if you have not seen it it's been all over the internet but if you have not seen the nike a1 commercial it's brilliant it's fantastic um the collection is live may 6th that's when it goes live the colorways for all the shoes have been released they are all gorgeous there's a blue colorway there's a white colorway there's a black and pink one there's all pink absolutely gorgeous she's got her shorts her
01:15:57
DJ
Lex leaves her slides her socks or everything so get into it like Asian Wilson's collection is going to sell out fast so hopefully I'll get in there and be able to get my a ones in Pearl. That is what I'm going for in the kid sizes so y'all wish me luck I'm going to go get my a ones in Pearl and I'm also trying to get the black sweatshirt as well.
01:16:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
Love that for you. I hope that you get it. um I will not be getting it because have too much money coming out, but eventually i will be supporting A1 and Asia Wilson.
01:16:27
Get Defensive Sports Network
And to wrap up the show, also want to give a quick shout out to Dawn Staley for getting a statue. And I love what Dawn Staley said that she said, I never wanted a statue. i wanted Asia to be the only one to have a statue, but I allowed them to give me a statue for all of the black girls around to know that they could do it too.
01:16:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
I think it's a picture of her cutting down her first net.
01:16:49
DJ
It's the net. Yeah. Yeah.
01:16:50

It is the net, but I imagine it's from the first one. It doesn't matter.
