00:00:09
Jordan
What's good, everybody? Welcome in to another episode of Get Defensive Sports Network's Power 2 podcast. As always, um' your host, Jordan, and I'm here with my co-host, DJ. And we have not recorded live in weeks.
00:00:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
I know. i know.
00:00:25
Jordan
How are you living?
00:00:27
Get Defensive Sports Network
am fantastic. And you know why I'm fantastic? Because this, and I know you are going to be like, but I don't care. I'm saying it anyways. This is our one year anniversary of this show. Ish.
00:00:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
On the day you're listening to it, it's the one year anniversary. So obviously this is the day before. And I just feel so overjoyed to be doing this again. I'm so excited. is my second full season of college football.
00:00:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
I feel like a new person. I can't believe I've been living my life this entire time, not watching it every Saturday. So like, It's cute, I'm excited. I'm living good. have lashes on today. It's good day.
00:00:58
Jordan
So that's a good day. Well, I'm happy for you. happy for us a year.
College Football vs. NFL: Which is More Exciting?
00:01:05
Jordan
um um ah Well, yeah, I'm happy for you that you finally listened to me and recognized the joy of college football.
00:01:13
Jordan
um I genuinely believe and and the thing is, it's always funny because like, I don't press like my friends about many things. So it's just like, if I'm pressing you, it's probably because it's, you know, like I'm not saying I'm always right, but if I'm pressing you, I'm probably right. And I've been trying to get more of my friends like watch college football, especially if you like football.
00:01:33
Jordan
Because just like the NFL, in my opinion, is just watered down compared to college sports.
00:01:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:01:40
Jordan
And if you like college sports, I feel like if you like sports, Almost all of them, I think the college version is better. Like, and not on some like old, yeah, and not on like some old stuff.
00:01:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
A lot of the times. Yeah. Yeah.
00:01:53
Jordan
Because there's a lot of people like it's better because they're not getting paid. That's dumb. It's just like less medicinal, like less like, like sometimes professional sports feels like when you go into a hospital.
00:02:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
Well, professional sports are a lot more, um. They're less risky, right? Because these people like winning is, is what pays the bills. Winning is what gets them to not saying that that's not the same for college, but it is a little different when, you know, your, your job and your everything like it's hinging upon whether or not you win.
00:02:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
So the the game itself just becomes more formulaic and it becomes more like we're going to run the triangle offense in basketball instances.
00:02:29
Jordan
yeah Yeah, it feels like when you
00:02:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like we're going to do the more simple plays. We're not going to do flea flickers in the NFL because the the chances of failure is higher than just doing a regular, you know, handoff. So it's just like, it's, it's a matter of like the game just becomes less like exciting because the, I feel like the point is a little bit different.
00:02:53
Get Defensive Sports Network
Whereas like in college, it's like,
00:02:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
I was about to say. And college is like, you know, you're you're putting it all out there.
00:03:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
you're You're still auditioning when you're in college. You know what I mean?
00:03:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
Once she why did you made it, you made it. So
00:03:05
Jordan
Yeah, it just sort of feels like when you go to a hospital, it's just sterilized. It's very kind of white and gray,
00:03:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah. Yeah.
Patrick Mahomes' Evolution
00:03:12
Jordan
I mean, the example that I'll give to this is like I've been listening to โ I say this all the time.
00:03:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. Smells like alcohol.
00:03:19
Jordan
I listen to a lot of sports podcasts. That's what I do. And I listen to some NFL podcasts, and they've been talking about Patrick Mahomes and just like how he's still the best, if not one of the best quarterbacks of all time, but now he's like โ like physically to watch he's boring like you could argue that he's more effective but like he's not as much doing the crazy throws he's not doing the running around even like like Josh Allen is doing it but he's doing it even less than he was right like you like to reach a certain level you sort of just have to like hone some of that stuff down
00:03:37
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:03:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
He's not exciting. Yeah.
00:03:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:03:58
Jordan
And so, it again, it does not make you any less good of a quarterback, but it does make you mildly less exciting to watch. Like, Patrick Mahomes, three, four years ago, was much more exciting to watch than last year.
00:04:11
Jordan
And last year's also a little bit tough because of his wide receivers and things like that. But, like, just, like, if you take everyone off the field, if you were just watching him, how he performed, in the pocket, when he ran, the types of throws he made, like, that sort of stuff, if he slid like that, like, he just...
00:04:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:04:26
Jordan
He's more sterile. It's just like a more, you know, he's...
00:04:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
It's formulaic. It's like, we do this, we do this, we do this, we do this, or we do this, or we do this because, and then again, I think it's also interesting using Pat Mahomes as an example because of like the immense success that Kansas city has had.
00:04:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
So you can imagine, it's going to start to become a little formulaic at a point because it's been working for them, you know?
00:04:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
So it's like, there's also that, because I feel like you can say the same thing about Tom Brady during that Superbowl run where it's like, he was not all, he was never the most exciting quarterback to watch, but what they accomplished was what was exciting about the Patriots.
00:04:53
Jordan
Well, Tom Brady was never fun to watch.
00:04:58
Jordan
But he got the job done.
00:05:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
So I think that's the other thing too, is like, Because Pat Mahomes still has it in him like a little bit, like eat it but it's not ever going to be at that level also because the hunger isn't there.
00:05:11
Get Defensive Sports Network
How many Super Bowls has he won now? Three? Two? I don't know. and Sorry, I'm not a brain counter.
00:05:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
I don't know. But he's been the Super Bowl a lot is
Unpredictability of College Football
00:05:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
the point.
00:05:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
He's won multiple times is the point. So he's not as hungry in the same way that he would have been in his first couple years in the league where he's playing with one of the worst teams. Now he's playing with one of the best teams and they're just going to keep doing what they need to do to stay in the best team.
00:05:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
So it's like, i don't know. But either way, the college version of football is immensely better. I have been converted. But I also feel like it's important to note that like I just didn't grow up in an environment where we watched college football.
00:05:45
Get Defensive Sports Network
I grew up in an environment where we watched NFL. My family is not those fans.
00:05:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
So like we're watching NFL, we're watching the Cowboys. Like we're not watching college football ever. And if we were watching it, we were going watch like the bigger brands like Texas and, you know, stuff like that. So.
00:06:00
Jordan
yeah Yeah, and and I think the last thing on this, because like, you know, we've made our point, I talk about this all the time. I also just think because of the age, there's just more excitement. Like, just like, and I don't even just talk about like celebrations.
00:06:12
Jordan
Like NFL celebrations are fun. Like, they're all a bunch of grown-ass man-child, and I say that positively.
00:06:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh yeah.
00:06:17
Get Defensive Sports Network
doing high school musical and choreography.
00:06:18
Jordan
Like, yeah, you know what I mean? Like, that's not, it's just like, I just kind of like the joy in the past. I feel like it's little bit different. than you know You get like the turnover chains and the theatrics
00:06:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, we had club turnover at SMU, yeah.
00:06:32
Jordan
yeah and like some of that sort of stuff.
00:06:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:06:34
Jordan
And then the last thing is just to your point of sort of being formulaic. The NFL is also formulaic because there's nothing new under the sun.
00:06:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:06:42
Jordan
So i at this point, at least a third of the NFL runs the same offense because it came from the...
00:06:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:06:50
Jordan
The Kyle Shanahan tree, like everyone wants a Shanahan guy, like defense is a little bit more different, but like there's that still, you know, maybe it's not a third, but maybe it's a fifth, right, of them that are running the same defense or or there's like two main sort of defensive styles.
00:07:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:07:07
Jordan
And so it's really just like who does the same thing the best. And then as soon as it works, you hire that guy's offensive coordinator and he does the same thing.
00:07:11
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:07:15
Jordan
And then when that works, like, you know, when he leaves, they put up the wide receivers coach and he does the same thing and then he's good.
00:07:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yep.
00:07:22
Jordan
So someone else hires him and it just, now you're at 2025 where, know,
00:07:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
It's the same tree. Yeah.
00:07:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:07:27
Jordan
10, 12, 15 of the teams are running some version of Kyle Shanahan's offense. like So it's I also think it's just more variety and in various things.
00:07:37
Get Defensive Sports Network
I didn't think about that either. Yeah, that's true. And I think that's what made the Detroit Lions as entertaining as they were last year because they probably had one of the most unique offenses that anybody had really seen in a long time because why is that man's a name leaving my head?
00:07:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
Dan? What's their coach's name?
00:07:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
Dan Campbell. He's running a lot of the shit that he ran when he was a player, obviously, when he played on the Cowboys. And, right? Did I just make that up?
00:08:02
Jordan
Are you playing the Cowboys?
00:08:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
He did.
00:08:05
Jordan
Yeah. Well, he's, he's doing that.
00:08:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
Not for the majority it's committed, but.
00:08:08
Jordan
Yeah. He's doing that. and his offensive coordinator is also a Sean Payton guy. So they're running a lot of like early 2010s, New York, saint New Orleans Saints stuff.
00:08:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
Exactly. Exactly.
00:08:18
Jordan
But then to that, to that point, that offensive coordinator now the head coach of the bears.
00:08:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:08:23
Jordan
So the bears are about to be running that. And then they kept, they promoted someone.
00:08:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:08:27
Jordan
So it's again, it's only two teams, but like, if they're successful, now you get another one next year, maybe it's three teams, right? Like,
00:08:34
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, but it's at least more entertaining.
00:08:35
Jordan
We don't know until it's... Yes.
00:08:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
It's at least more entertaining. And that's one thing I can give them is that the Detroit Lions for me was the most fun team to watch besides watching Washington. But I was watching Washington because I was watching Jaden because Jaden was interesting.
00:08:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
But that's one thing that's fun. Or even the whole like Philly tush push, the the brotherly shove thing that only Philly was running. They tried to get a band.
00:08:55
Get Defensive Sports Network
They didn't get a band. But it's fun because it's their thing, you know?
00:08:58
Get Defensive Sports Network
The
00:08:58
Jordan
Yeah, because they're trying to, then they like, no fun league. Like, let me talk about the NFL's no fun league.
00:09:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
thing,
00:09:03
Jordan
They literally tried to ban it. So it's just, whatever.
00:09:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
They tried to ban it.
00:09:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
And I love that they stood on business and said, no, we're not, because there's nothing wrong with the play.
00:09:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
Y'all just mad because you don't have a defense for it. Figure it out.
00:09:13
Jordan
you know I'm saying?
00:09:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
Watch some film. I don't know. Get some bigger niggas. I don't know, but figure it out.
00:09:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like it's, it's fun to watch.
00:09:18
Jordan
Something, listen. But...
00:09:20
Get Defensive Sports Network
Please. We like to watch it. We love to know that when they're on a fourth and one, no matter where they are on the field, they're going to give us a brotherly shove. It's fine. Shit.
00:09:27
Jordan
You know, um with I'm with it. with it.
00:09:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
Anyway.
00:09:30
Jordan
So, yeah, but I mean, if you're listening to the show, you like college football.
00:09:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
anyway
00:09:34
Jordan
We got DJ on our side. on And, the and the yeah, I mean, I still watch the NFL. I watch it every week. But college football is definitely my sort of go-to for sure.
00:09:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
That's the highlight.
00:09:44
Jordan
So to hop into the podcast, we have one โ first of all, it's preview season.
00:09:53

This is my reminder that if you are listening to this podcast, we get better during the football season because that's, I mean like this podcast more than others, we do talk about other sports, but like football is my main thing. It's preview season. And we are previewing today the Big 12. The Big 12. The arguably the most fun conference.
00:11:23
Jordan
um The most... And inarguably the most chaotic.
00:11:27
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh my gosh. Mess. Just mess.
00:11:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
Are we not doing the news then?
00:11:34
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, that is continued. Mess. Just mess.
00:11:36
Jordan
Just mess. But before that, of course, we do have news. We have things that we want to talk about. Really, only one
Unrivaled: New Women's Basketball League
00:11:42
Jordan
thing. Unrivaled signed 14 women's basketball players to NIL deals.
00:11:48
Jordan
If you do not remember what Unrivaled is or you do not know what Unrivaled is, Unrivaled is a new three-on-three basketball league that was founded by two current WNBA players, Nafisha Collier and Stewie.
00:12:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes.
00:12:03
Jordan
and Brianna Stewart of the Minnesota Lynx and the New York Liberty. um And it is a off season iteration basketball options so that people don't have to go overseas.
00:12:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
Option. Yeah.
00:12:16
Jordan
um They don't have to deal with sort of the politics and the travel and being away from the family and things like that, but they also get paid more money. um And it was very fun. it is was very successful and and the brand is growing and They signed 14 players, DJ.
00:12:34
Jordan
Do you want to talk about the 14 players?
00:12:34
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes.
00:12:35
Jordan
Do you want to talk about Enron?
00:12:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
Of course. I'm going to double them off, obviously.
00:12:36
Jordan
How are we living? What are we doing?
00:12:38
Get Defensive Sports Network
So this is obviously not the first time that Unrivaled has signed college players to NIL deals. Last year, they have Flage and Johnson and Paige Beckers as the college players that they had signed. And they just did simple things, promotion, videos, those sorts of things. So we can imagine that these deals are going to turn out a similar way.
00:12:55
Get Defensive Sports Network
But what's really cool is that Nafisa Collier has been very clear about what it is that they're really wanting to do, and that is partnering with highlighting and continuing to elevate and platform the best players in women's basketball and they want to start as early as possible um and help build these women's platforms before they even get to the WNBA. the 14 are as follows.
00:13:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
the fourteen players are as follows too Juju Watkins, duh, Lauren Betts, Hannah Hidalgo, AZ Fudd, Sarah Strong, Olivia Miles, Madison Booker, Kiki Rice, Malaysia Full Wiley, Audi Crooks, Tania Latson, Silas Swartz, and Sienna Betts, which is Lauren Betts' little sister.
00:13:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
All of those names, if you are a women's basketball college fan, should be recognizable to you. Most of them at least, especially if you know with the Sarah Straum, my late football volley, Judy Watkins, they have really high profiles. Judy Watkins, what a flex. She is an investor in this league, and now she's basically getting paid to promote it, which is like lit as fuck.
00:13:55
Get Defensive Sports Network
um But a lot of people are thinking that this is kind of the unrivaled way of showing that they are really trying to position themselves as a developmental league for the WNBA. If the WNBA is not going to invest in a sort of G League sort of structure like the NBA has or a summer league or things like that, where there's a place for these this young talent to be fostered and developed, I think Arrivaled is basically raising their hand and saying we're going to be that place for them. So I don't know it's going to turn into actual play from them. I don't think so. I don't think they can.
00:14:25
Jordan
No, because it happens during college basketball season.
00:14:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
um by Yeah. So it's not going to be like, don't expect them to be playing or anything like that, but they're definitely going to be involved. They're going to be representing the brand. They're probably going to be out there for some, for during a point where they're not actually playing.
00:14:38
Get Defensive Sports Network
So, um, yeah.
00:14:41
Jordan
and ah And I think it's also a sign of like, hey, when you graduate, we do want you to play.
00:14:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
and
00:14:47
Jordan
You know what I mean?
00:14:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
we want you hear. Yeah.
00:14:49
Jordan
Like, unless, like, Paige is going to be in the rivalry next year. You know saying?
00:14:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:14:52
Jordan
Like, obviously, Flasier didn't come out, so she got signed a second time as as a sponsor, as an ILO athlete, but like,
00:14:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:14:59
Jordan
if she would have come out, Flaje would have been in run ride next year. Like, like that's sort of also sort of like getting them, um getting into them early, all the things that you're talking about, their career and stuff like that, but also using their platform because we understand the platform of college basketball, but also just like building that relationship and being like, Hey, when you come into the league and currently, unless they change it,
00:15:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:15:24
Jordan
you're making $75,000 a year. As soon as that season's over, we'll pay you $150,000, whatever it's to be, $200,000.
00:15:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
We'll pay $220.
00:15:33
Jordan
And that's another that's some extra money in your pocket. You don't have to worry about being 21, 22, figuring out Russia, figuring out um Europe, Spain,
00:15:44
Get Defensive Sports Network
Croatia, whatever.
00:15:45
Jordan
croatia Japan, like all of these other places that a lot of them had to figure out. You don't have to be away from your family and doing all these things. We are going to pay you to play basketball and and still continue to use your following and and and build.
00:16:01
Jordan
and Because that's the other thing that I saw someone say. think it's very important. is it's like It's hard to get brand deals when you spend half of the year in another country. you know what saying?
00:16:11
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yep.
00:16:11
Jordan
Like Angel Reese is Angel Reese, of course. But like how many more brand deals did she get by being here and being in Unrivaled and being able to go to these events and and show up at these places and be on TV versus if she had to spend those couple of months in Spain, right?
00:16:30
Jordan
And so like that stuff does matter. And even for me who... like I learned new names from Unrivaled. We were talking, I'm like, who is this?
00:16:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
I loved it. He wass like number 32 on red.
00:16:41
Jordan
It's just more like
00:16:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
Who is that?
00:16:43
Jordan
Yeah, like it's just another way for fans to sort of get involved with players and and stuff like that. So, you know, we we don't need to sing in Rivals praises.
00:16:53
Jordan
We do that all the time. We did that as soon as it started. But yeah, and and I think, I mean, the two from 2 to 14 shows their expected growth as well. And the fact that these players who are at the top of their sport,
00:17:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh yeah.
00:17:07
Jordan
respected enough and want to put their names on. Like, Flauze is huge at this point. She's not just putting her name on nothing.
00:17:11
Get Defensive Sports Network
Huge.
00:17:12
Jordan
You know what I'm saying?
00:17:12
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:17:12
Jordan
like like Like, yeah.
00:17:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
Juju is ginormous.
00:17:15
Jordan
Like, Juju is juju is literally they're about to give her a shoe.
00:17:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like...
00:17:20
Jordan
Like, she's not just putting her name on something. You know what mean?
00:17:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:17:22
Jordan
Like, so, don't know.
00:17:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'll say this as well.
00:17:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
i think Unrivaled is just... And this, want to be very clear, this is my opinion, me, Danasia, and this is my own speculation because I know that there's a lot of conversation that we'll get into a little bit later about potential unrivaled, basically like yeah There's a lot of um speculation about Unrivaled and the WNBA and and how they go together basically.
00:17:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
But, and so this is my opinion, but I do think Unrivaled is low key trying to show at the WNBA that like you should be investing in the athletes while they're still in college. Because that is something that the WNBA has historically like not really been known to do is continue, is create continuity between the college brand and the WNBA brand of their newer athletes. I would argue that's why they blew up in the way that they did last year and not in years before that, because they're, they have some of the college greats in the WNBA, but they never create that continuity.
00:18:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
um And who's to say, who knows why i have I have always said, I believe that the league is being led by people who want it to fail, but that's a whole nother thing I can't get into. So I think Unrivaled is also showing like, Hey, There's a way to create continuity with these athletes, these young athletes, and go ahead and get hot on their brands early, get ah associated with them early.
00:18:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
So that way we can continue to grow the actual league itself. And that's a very, very big gap that the WNBA has. So there's also that. And then it's not to say that they have to do too much, but the fact that like just this last year or two years,
00:18:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
is when they started doing like games back at the colleges um to promote, you know, obviously like they had Asia play back at South Carolina as for the preseason last year. And then they have four games that were back at colleges for preseason. Like, it's like, hello, y'all probably should have been doing that.
00:19:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
So I don't know. I just think sometimes I'm rivaled to just be like, hey, we're better than you at this. Good job.
00:19:16
Jordan
Oh, yeah, for sure.
00:19:17
Get Defensive Sports Network
But I thought,
00:19:17
Jordan
And I don't even think it's just talking about like the college thing. I think it's just talking about white supporting your players and their brand in general.
00:19:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
supporting who's coming up exactly.
00:19:30
Jordan
like They're like, you could do a better job with Stewie. You could do a better job with with Asia. You could do a better job with Paige. It's all of them. like
00:19:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:19:41
Jordan
You know, we'll get into it again next year when the rival is coming around because i'm sure that there will be new changes. But, like, just the the access they've provided, the the way that they use social media, the some of the very intentional things that they did. Like, they did it because they're like, you could if you take full advantage of this, this is going it's not just about play. It is going to help your brand.
00:20:04
Jordan
And the WNBA is not the only league that is really bad at branding their players.
00:20:11
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:20:11
Jordan
Cough, cough the NBA. But, but, but, yeah, so, cool, cool, cool, cool.
00:20:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
Their dad. Yeah.
00:20:17
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. It's good times. ah The one last thing I want to share, I just thought this was really interesting, is between that group of 14 individuals, they combined for 32 NCAA tournament appearances, 25 Sweet 16 appearances, 14 Elite 8 appearances, 10 Final Four appearances, and four national championships.
00:20:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
Them ladies at some hoopers.
00:20:38
Jordan
That's a group. That is a group. The
00:20:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like they didn't go get just random women's players.
00:20:44
Get Defensive Sports Network
They went and got the literal best of the best. That's iconic. I love it. So can't wait see how that turns out. um I am anticipating the unrivaled season so much just because it was so much lighter, so much more fun, so much more wholesome than the current WNBA season. But we'll talk about that later. Now to the Big Ten.
00:21:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
Big 12.
00:21:04
Jordan
ah big to it's it's It is.
00:21:08
Get Defensive Sports Network
I have Big Ten in front of me.
00:21:09
Get Defensive Sports Network
That's what's wrong with me. Big 12.
00:21:12
Jordan
You know, the Big Ten's the best. But that's not what we're going to talk about today. Today, we're talking about the 12.
00:21:17
Get Defensive Sports Network
All right.
00:21:18
Jordan
So as a quick refresher,
00:21:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:21:20
Jordan
In case you were wondering, who is
Big 12 Conference Overview
00:21:22
Jordan
in the Big 12? Because this is a question that it feels like we have to ask all the time. This is only the second year of the newest, like of the most recent format.
00:21:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
and yeah
00:21:32
Jordan
And the big conferences, the Power 4 conferences haven't had changes, but there are still changes. Like, 2026 is going to be totally different. for I mean, the Pac-12 is coming back, and which means that's changing all of the...
00:21:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
I can't do this.
00:21:46
Jordan
the G5 conferences and all of that sort of stuff. So at the power four level, there were no changes, but it's still a good reminder to, to know like what teams are in the conferences.
00:21:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
oh
00:21:56
Jordan
So the big 12 has Arizona state, Arizona, Cincinnati, Colorado, Houston, Kansas, Oklahoma state, Utah.
00:22:07
Jordan
I miss Baylor, Baylor, Utah, TCU, Kansas state, Iowa state, BYU, Utah,
00:22:19
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes. 16 teams in total.
00:22:19
Jordan
I think that's how you won. 16 teams.
00:22:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes.
00:22:23
Jordan
16 teams. So, as we did last year, we are going to focus these previews on sort of a couple of things, right? We're going to talk about some emerging storylines. We're going to look at top transfers. We're going to look at at contenders, dark horse contenders, critical matchups, and...
00:22:39
Jordan
Newly, because it's it is important and and it's so much that's going on. Everyone wants to talk about how many teams are going to get into the playoff and then all of these sort of things as it's 12 and going potentially 16 and all all the things that are happening with the playoff.
00:22:54
Jordan
How many playoff participants we think each conference is going to get. So, To start, as you should with the emerging storylines, we have a couple up here, but the first one I want to talk about is Arizona State without Cam Scadaboo.
00:23:09
Jordan
Arizona State is and ah in a really interesting position where they're bringing back a lot of their production, but they're not bringing back the most important player.
00:23:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:23:24
Jordan
And so called it becomes this thing where it's like when you watched the Arizona State last year, they were good, but in almost all of their key moments, it was Cam.
00:23:36
Jordan
ah You know, like the the fact that they almost beat Texas was Cam, literally single-handed.
00:23:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:23:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. It was, he willed them.
00:23:43
Jordan
He was doing everything. he was throwing the ball.
00:23:44
Get Defensive Sports Network
threw the ball.
00:23:45
Jordan
He was catching the ball.
00:23:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
He ran the ball.
00:23:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
he but I think he played on defense at one point.
00:23:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
was.
00:23:48
Jordan
Yeah, I mean, it honestly honestly, if he would have played on defense on that fourth and nine, Texas probably wouldn't scored a touchdown.
00:23:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:23:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
thanks
00:23:55
Jordan
So, like, so it's it's like, yes, right, they are bringing back so many of their pieces.
00:23:58
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:24:03
Jordan
But what do they do without the sort of engine and the person who could โ
00:24:13
Jordan
who like answered the ball, answered the call when they needed it. They're bringing back 35 of the 44 players on their 2D that was eligible to return in 2025.
00:24:24
Jordan
thirty five 35. In case you were wondering, you only play 11 players at a time. That means they're bringing back starters and backups who had key roles, including their quarterback and a lot of other places.
00:24:34
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah.
00:24:37
Jordan
So you would think in a conference that we all sort of say is unpredictable and we're going to stick with that because i do agree with that. you're you're You're saying, okay, this conference is unpredictable, but you have Arizona State who won it last year, and you say they're bringing back 35 players.
00:24:56
Jordan
They're bringing back their quarterback. um They're bringing back their wide receivers. They're bringing back their offensive line. They're bringing back almost their whole defense, and and what they're losing, and are you could say maybe one player,
00:25:12
Jordan
um They brought in a transfer. They brought in a running back from Army who rushed for 1,100 yards, 6.2 yards per carry. So the question is sort of, are they just going to do it again, right? like Or is Cam a bigger loss than can sort of qualify? Yeah.
00:25:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'll tell you this, I think Arizona State went as Cam Skadaboo went. So therefore, yes, they are returning a lot of production, but also to your point, like Cam's worst games were the games that they lost.
00:25:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
um So, I mean, he had some bad games that they still ended up winning, but it's against Texas State and and and Wyoming. So um I'm going to say... i don't know I don't know about Arizona State.
00:26:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
I really, really don't. I know we spoke about um before kind of giving like a more overarching like idea of who we thought was gonna make it from like less of a studying standpoint and more like opera vibes and and all of that.
00:26:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
I think Arizona State has fight in them. I don't think they are going to completely suck, but ah this is the, who do we, who even is Arizona State without Cam?
00:26:23
Jordan
that That is a good question. The other thing that they're losing...
00:26:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like who even are they? Like who's the next guy? Like who's, I don't know. So that's the biggest thing. It's kind of the same the same sentiment that I have towards Boise. And I know that's a different conference, but like who gives
00:26:35
Jordan
And Boise, of course, isn't bringing back as many people, but it is a very like salient point. like We don't expect Boise to be good this year because they don't have Aston Genty.
00:26:45
Jordan
Should we be expecting Arizona State to be good without Cam Scalib?
00:26:45
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:26:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
I think that they're not, they're not going to make like a drastic fall, but I don't think they're like, oh my gosh, like they're the ones they're going to do it again. Because also let's be clear. Nobody was even thinking about Arizona state last year.
00:27:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
Nobody was even thinking about Arizona state.
00:27:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
We, I don't even think we talked about Arizona state for our last year's big 10 break ten Big 10, Big 12, Jesus. Preview. So that's also an indicator of like, okay, y'all had that one star that's really cool. Love that for y'all. But like, who are y'all really? I think this is the year that we're actually going figure that out because nobody was checking for y'all last year.
00:27:19
Get Defensive Sports Network
And the only reason why we're checking for y'all this year is because of how well y'all did last year, but you did it off the back with somebody who's not there anymore. So.
00:27:28
Jordan
And, well, I will say slightly, that is definitely true on offense, but they did have a good defense. Like, on defense, they were 20th overall, fifteenth in rushing, 25th in passing, a top one-third defense, and they're bringing back a lot of those players.
00:27:35
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:27:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:27:46
Jordan
So their defense did keep them in a lot of the games, although it also did didn't lose in the Texas game. But I think, you know, their hope is going to have to be that And the thing is also, we're not really you know we're not necessarily talking about where they fit nationally, but it's can they do it again in the Big 12?
00:28:03
Jordan
And I think that their hope has to be that they can't replace Cam, but maybe the quarterback, Sam Levitt, takes another jump, and then he becomes that, right?
00:28:11
Get Defensive Sports Network
There can be some good production. Yeah.
00:28:15
Jordan
Like, when you have a young quarterback, you need a star running back or a star wide receiver.
00:28:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:28:21
Jordan
When your quarterback is the star, then he's the one that's the engine. And so I guess the hope for them would be that in his second year as a starter, after coming onto the scene having really good year, that Sam Levitt is sort of ready to to fill that gap in, of course, a different way.
00:28:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:28:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
To be that guy.
00:28:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'll say schedule-wise, don't see them like having a crazy dip. like I still see ah a situation for them, maybe a 10-2 in some of the closer games. like i don't like I want to be clear, I think they have enough talent to to win games, but also their schedule it is favorable.
00:29:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
so I think as far as like top teams in the Big Ten, they're only playing, what, two of them, it looks like? Maybe three? Yeah.
00:29:08
Jordan
Yeah, they're set to play Baylor and Texas Tech.
00:29:12
Get Defensive Sports Network
Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU is the top team, depending on who you ask. um Utah, depending on who you ask. So, you know, but I don't think, based on the schedule, I don't think they're going to have a hard time getting wins.
00:29:25
Jordan
Yeah, for sure. um
00:29:32
Jordan
Next question. Next
Colorado's Prospects Without Key Players
00:29:33
Jordan
emerging storyline is Colorado.
00:29:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
The next emerging storyline, my favorite one.
00:29:35
Jordan
um Colorado What do they look like without Shador and Travis? ah This is one thing that I do want to say. i think that, and credit's the wrong word, but I do think that we need to acknowledge that the as a general consensus, people were wrong about Deion in that he didn't want to coach college football and that he was going to leave as soon as his sons were there.
00:29:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah,
00:29:58
Jordan
like in And in his sons, I'm also including Travis Hunter. That was basically one of his sons. He said that, Travis said that. They won big happy family vacation together, all that sort of stuff.
00:30:08
Get Defensive Sports Network
his babies, his kids. Yeah, yeah.
00:30:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
He's at the wedding, whatever, yeah.
00:30:11
Jordan
So, yeah. So it's just like, what... does he want to do when when Shador is not there, when Travis is not there, when Shiloh is not there. And he's stayed. He signed a five year contract.
00:30:24
Jordan
And he he is all set on being the coach. Of course, he hit the transfer portal. He stole a borderline five-star quarterback from USC. He went and got one of the better quarterbacks in the transfer portal.
00:30:36
Jordan
He's doing these things where it's very much like year three now.
00:30:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
Liberty. Yeah.
00:30:41
Jordan
We don't know what year three looks like, but as far as the Dion angle, we can we no longer have to question if he is committed to the job.
00:30:53
Jordan
So then the question becomes, which is our storyline, because it is Dion, and there's still going to be Oz, and there's still going to be maybe less hype, of course, but...
00:31:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, of course.
00:31:02
Jordan
there's still will be eyes and and and things like that and they put themselves in a position that a lot of teams put themselves in where it's like okay you did something like so what happens next what do they look like without Shadour and without Travis and we ah we keep saying Shadour and Travis but they did lose so much more than that like they lost um uh they lost what is that wide receiver's name um there was another really good wide receiver that they had uh
00:31:19
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:31:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:31:32
Jordan
I can't think of it right now. But there's like like they had a wide receiver who would have been their wife best wide receiver if Travis Hunter also didn't play.
00:31:35
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:31:42
Jordan
Like, he was legitimately โ LeJonte Western or something like that, he was legitimately good wide receiver. So they lost other people on defense and and various things like that. But, of course, Chador and Travis are the big names.
00:31:55
Jordan
So it just is what it is.
00:31:58
Get Defensive Sports Network
I think that the thing about Colorado, I think this is going to be like the first, and I said this already, you know, this first year that you're really going to see like Deion's coaching chops, like what he's really going to be able to do.
00:32:11
Get Defensive Sports Network
Cause they also, I mean, there was also the attitude that he wasn't to be all that successful last year as well. And he still managed to pull out a successful um season, you know, given, given given,
00:32:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
given where they were at prior right I mean in 2023 the only one four games last year they won one two three four five was at seven eight nine but at the end of the day three and nine against powerful opponents so the real question is how is Colorado going to be able to stack up against
00:32:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
player against the power four. I think that's the bigger question, but he hit the transfer portal. Like you said they have some really, really great recruits. They've got a couple of coaching changes.
00:32:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
I think the biggest thing also is that the offense will inevitably change um because you had a once in a lifetime wide receiver. And so the offense was very much air raid. It was very much put the ball in the air and get it to the playmakers.
00:33:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
That is not obviously going to be their offense this year. So that's going be really interesting is to see how they, ah je And obviously the offensive line was such a liability last year. um Hopefully that gets cleaned up a little bit because they have a different quarterback and they obviously will have a different, I think they'll have a different runner this year as well.
00:33:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
um So their offense is inevitably going to change. And I think that'll be interesting to watch them workshop through their first couple of weeks. oh Again, a favorable schedule, in my opinion, ish.
00:33:34
Jordan
Well, honestly, I think the hard thing with the favorable schedule thing is i don't think anyone in the Big 12 has a favorable schedule because they can all just beat each other, which is what happened last year.
00:33:35
Get Defensive Sports Network
Georgia Tech.
00:33:43
Get Defensive Sports Network
They can all beat each other. Yes, that is very true. But by favorable schedule, I mean more so like the amount of quote unquote projected top teams they have to play is more so what I'm getting at.
00:33:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
But yes, every every game is going to be competitive because the Big 12. I mean, we were waiting until the last hour of the last day to figure out who was going to be in the Big 12 championship.
00:34:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like...
00:34:04
Jordan
Yeah, and and as far as the way, like, if we're looking at the teams that, even just the teams that we're considering contenders, they play two of them.
00:34:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
Debra Ruhl- Two of them
00:34:13
Jordan
And one of the teams that we're considering contender is not, at least that I'm considering contender, is not a consensus contender for other people. So if we're looking at just, like, what people think are going to be the top three teams, they only play one. They play Arizona State.
00:34:27
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah. Debra Ruhl- yeah. Ruhl- starting the season playing Georgia tech is paid after them. Debra Ruhl- But.
00:34:35
Jordan
Which is a funny thing to say where it's just like, like, to speak of how college football changes and the good of Deion and just the good of everything, the fact that, like, we are interested in a Colorado-Georgia Tech game, like, five years ago, nobody would care about that.
00:34:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
Nobody's gonna care. Like nobody gave call.
00:34:50
Jordan
Like, but, like, this year, that like, that is a good game. Like, these are two teams that are sort of, like, fighting to find...
00:34:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
Their identities.
00:34:57
Jordan
an identity and and making back-to-back bowl games.
00:34:58
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:35:00
Jordan
Like, that's the goal. I think Georgia Tech maybe did it. ah Colorado, the hope is to make back-to-back bowl games this year because obviously did last year and so on and so forth.
00:35:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:35:08
Jordan
um But to your point, yeah, the offense is going to very different, largely because they have a quarterback now who can run the ball. um ah Like, I mean, Shadour couldn't run to save his life.
00:35:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
I hate you. It's the way you say things. It's just the way you say things.
00:35:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
Hopefully, he's going to have to learn how to do it in the NFL. So, well,
00:35:27
Jordan
Nah, he's not. he If you can't run in college, you're not going to start running in the NFL.
00:35:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
well, well i was about to say the the way that they protect quarterbacks is such an intensely ridiculous level in the NFL. It's also like he probably will never even have to add that to his game.
00:35:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
That's why I was like, actually, hold on.
00:35:44
Jordan
he He can't add it to his game. He just doesn't have it. Um, they, they're, they're, they're, well, I mean, it's not even about development.
00:35:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, he there is no development.
00:35:53
Jordan
he just doesn't have, like, he's not that kind of athlete. Like, he has a lot of skills in a lot of areas.
00:35:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:36:00
Jordan
Rushing is not one of them. And you are not going to do that when everybody on the defensive line is 300 pounds and runs a Like,
00:36:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm...
00:36:07
Jordan
If you couldn't do it in college where some of them people run a 5'2 and are never going to play in the league, you're not doing it in the league where, you know, Ndamukong Su 320 pounds and runs a Like, you're not โ he's not doing that.
00:36:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, God.
00:36:21
Jordan
So โ but their current โ
00:36:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
I am just, I'm holding out hope. Anybody can develop. That's all i' say I'm saying.
00:36:26
Jordan
but you can't develop running skills.
00:36:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm holding out hope. No, obviously not.
00:36:29
Jordan
Like, you can't develop speed.
00:36:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
But I'm saying, no, you can't develop speed, but you might be able to develop, you know, more elusiveness.
00:36:31
Jordan
I'm not like โ but that I'm โ yeah.
00:36:35
Get Defensive Sports Network
That doesn't necessari necessarily mean he's going run for 20 yards, but like, he might be able to develop a little bit more of that. But anyways, it doesn't matter.
00:36:42
Jordan
He better hope so. um there
00:36:44
Get Defensive Sports Network
We'll get into that when it happens.
00:36:45
Jordan
Their quarterback, their new expected quarterback, Caden Salters, he had a great year Not as good last year, but in he put passing yards,
00:36:58
Jordan
ah thousand russian yards and forty four total touchdown
00:36:58
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh.
00:37:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, period.
00:37:01
Jordan
So, like, that is ah another sort of beast, and he needs it because one of Shador's best qualities is that he was tough, and we found out how tough he was because he got beat up playing behind that offensive line.
00:37:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:37:16
Jordan
Caden Saltz is going to run a little bit more, and he's probably going have to because, again, we don't know what offensive line looks like. So um that is a question.
00:37:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. And they have no receivers. I mean, not that they have no receivers, but nobody is coming back. So they lost the whole one.
00:37:29
Jordan
Yeah, literally, they did lose all of their receivers.
00:37:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
that'll be that'll be um interesting pretty much.
00:37:36
Jordan
Their receivers are transfers.
00:37:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, that'll be interesting all around. But I think the big i think the coolest thing about this and ah think the coolest thing about this is the way that Colorado's brand has been able to be elevated.
00:37:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
I think they said their applications are up 20% just because of Dion being there and coaching and elevating their profile and their brand and all of that. And of course, like with the whole like concept of him coming from, um, whatever school he was at for, why can I think Jackson, Jackson state?
00:38:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
um and bringing a lot of those guys with him. And and of course, a lot of people are going want to play for Colorado because they want to play for Dion. um I just love it because Colorado just wasn't the type of it wasn't a school that you associated really with football in that same like way.
00:38:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
So I love it. I think it's cool.
00:38:28
Jordan
Yeah, for sure. um Next and last question.
Texas Tech's Transfer Strategy
00:38:36
Jordan
All transfer Texas Tech.
00:38:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes.
00:38:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
This is crazy.
00:38:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
crazy
00:38:43
Jordan
this is a really interesting thing and for just all of college football in general. But this is really sort of interesting for me for one thing. And and my one of my various brands that I sort of stick behind is I am far from anti-transfer portal.
00:39:01
Jordan
But I do not think you can build a real winner in the transfer portal. So I think the question with Texas, who?
00:39:09
Get Defensive Sports Network
But USF did it.
00:39:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
USF, University of South Florida, did just make that FSU, Florida State, FSU, sorry.
00:39:18
Jordan
Yeah, and then look what happened the next year.
00:39:20
Get Defensive Sports Network
I know, but I'm just saying they did do it.
00:39:22
Jordan
So, and they had less transfers, to be clear.
00:39:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
They did.
00:39:26
Jordan
Like Florida State, their best players were transfers, but they had a team around them.
00:39:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh yes.
00:39:31
Jordan
Like Texas Tech, and just about everybody who's playing, like just about everyone who's playing is a transfer.
00:39:34
Get Defensive Sports Network
They're building a team on transfers.
00:39:38
Jordan
And then on top of that, they're having two new coordinators. So like everybody's new, everything is new.
00:39:43
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah yeah
00:39:45
Jordan
And I just have this sort of thing where it's just like โ I know like if you're not really in the sports, you really don't pay attention to things like that, it can be easy to like to like shoo away things like culture and leadership and like that sort of stuff.
00:40:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
continuity yeah
00:40:01
Jordan
But that stuff really does matter, even in the pros, but especially in college with with younger kids, right?
00:40:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:40:08
Jordan
um And you need that sort of accountability. You need that leadership. You need the person who is getting the extra reps and stopping them from blacking out and drinking. and like oh like Coaches can only do so much, right?
00:40:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:40:19
Jordan
And when you have transfers, everyone coming in it's really hard. The other thing with the transfer thing for me is everyone, when you're bringing in these transfers, you're promising them two things. You're promising them money and you're promising them that they're going to start.
00:40:36
Jordan
There are obviously some players who have a team first mentality. And so if things go different for them, maybe they're okay with that. But a lot of times, and like you started to hear like little like rumblings with Oregon last year about some of their transfer players being unhappy because they weren't getting exactly what they promised, this, that, and the third.
00:40:56
Jordan
And so um I think that I just, it's going to be an interesting case. of just What does a team look like when almost everyone is a transfer, right?
00:41:08
Jordan
um And I think there's two ways to look at this, right?
00:41:09
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:41:13
Jordan
One, the first way to look at it is Does it work for them in that sort of like the Colorado but thing? Do they go from three wins to eight wins or three wins to nine wins?
00:41:25
Jordan
And it's like, okay, that was very successful for you. You had a good dc a year. You should be happy. Versus what I think Texas Tech's thing is, we want to build a team that can compete for national championship.
00:41:35
Get Defensive Sports Network
For a championship. Oh yeah.
00:41:38
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, because they want to be back in their Patrick Mahomes era.
00:41:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, you know, they want to be back in that space where they were successful and overwhelmingly successful football program. And they've invested a lot in it.
00:41:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
I mean, first of all, Texas Tech in general is just a visit investing a lot.
00:41:53
Jordan
They were only so successful with Patrick Mahomes, by the way.
00:41:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes, but you know and you know i getting at.
00:41:59
Get Defensive Sports Network
Patrick Mahomes is their is that what I'm getting at. But... Texas Tech is very interesting because clearly Texas Tech has a priority. Their boosters have a priority and that is to invest in their sports.
00:42:11
Get Defensive Sports Network
You just saw that on the women's softball side things. Forgive me that her name has left my spirit. I don't know. I'm bad with names. But the first $1 million dollars deal in softball and so you're over here on this side of things and they're doing the $200 million dollars
00:42:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
There we go. They're doing a $200 million dollars renovation to their stadium. They're clearly investing in these transfers because they wouldn't have this many coming if they weren't paying them. um So that's going to be very, very interesting. It's the same thing that we talked about kind of. It's similar to what we talked about with the Brooklyn Nets and why thought the Brooklyn Nets were not going successful. It's because sometimes too much of a good thing is not a good thing.
00:42:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
So many of these transfers, I want to look, they have 13 four-star transfers at for one school. The entire conference has gotten 12 combined and they have brought 13 four stars.
00:43:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
And i have always been somebody who's paid attention to the concept of like having too many stars, right? If you have 13 four-stars, you only play 11 people at once, okay? You have 13 four-stars, which means you have 13 guys who all were the best players wherever they were at.
00:43:20
Get Defensive Sports Network
They are going to be expecting to be starters. They're going to be expecting to be built around. They're going to be expecting all those things. Somebody is not about to get that. Somebody is not about to get that. Plus, they also have to contend with the guys who have been there, the guys who have tenure, because a lot of times, obviously, the guys who have tenure are going to get a little bit of a preference in playing time, depending on where you know what position they play and things like that.
00:43:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
So they're also contending with the guys who are already there. I hate this. And I want to be clear, I don't hate it because of the transfer portal element of things. It's the same reason you know you're saying. I think that using the transfer portal to help build a team is ah is a great method of building.
00:43:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
I just don't think... That you need that many. I don't think you need that many because yes on paper you're going to have all of these four star transfers you're going to have all of these great guys going to have all of this, you know talent in the room.
00:44:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
But that doesn't mean that they're all going to mention this mean that they're all going to be able to play together and to your point. Where's the culture and who's the culture drivers? Because yeah, you can have a bunch of guys who are really, really great or they're four stars, but they may, they may be lazy. There are some guys who are four star recruits and they don't do nothing.
00:44:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
They're just four stars. You know what i mean? Because they're just good, but they eat like shit. They don't take care of themselves. They don't have discipline. They don't have all these things. That's not to shade anybody, but I'm just saying that there are some four stars. five-star recruits that are just that because they're naturally athletic. It has nothing to do with their work ethic or their discipline level.
00:44:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
Who's going to hold them responsible if the whole room is transfers? Like who's going to hold them responsible if the whole team, not the whole team, but theoretically the whole team, you know, like who's the culture of drivers, who's the culture setters, who's going to be the leaders, who's going to be, because as transfers too, you're not going to want to some of them, but I know for me, I'm not coming into a team and immediately thinking I'm running shit.
00:44:50
Jordan
I mean, effectively the whole team is transfers, yes.
00:45:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
right you You look and you see what the system is and who's and who's the thought leader and who's the culture leader on the team. Who is that? Who's that going to be? Because it's going be a transfer just coming in and saying, okay, this is what we're going to do.
00:45:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
They don't know the culture. They haven't been there. So yeah, I i feel like tech is going have a big issue with figuring out how all of these people are going to mesh. And you can only hope that they figure it out like soon enough to have a successful season.
00:45:30
Jordan
Yeah, and the ah the other thing with this, and this is, I think, is the hardest one to do, and Colorado is a big example of this. They essentially portaled their whole offensive line.
00:45:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:45:40
Jordan
From my knowledge, there has not been one portaled offensive line that's been successful.
00:45:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:45:46
Jordan
Because offensive line is so much about... continuity and mess meshing and um ah trust and and and and playing on the string and things like that.
00:45:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
You have to be on one chord.
00:45:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:45:58
Jordan
And it typically takes two years. Like, I hate to give credit to cheaters, but the the school that did the off offensive line transfer thing the best was Michigan.
00:46:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:46:07
Jordan
But it was always because they would bring in one or two guys because they had so much depth.
00:46:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
One. Yeah. yeah
00:46:13
Jordan
They had guys that played. It was like, we got four starters. We need a center. You go out and get the best center in the country. You can make that work. we We have three guys. We need a guard and a tackle. You go out and get some of the best, you can make that work. But you have the coach. You have the room. You have guys who got a bunch of snaps and all of this sort of thing.
00:46:32
Jordan
So you're supplementing. I wonder, like, there's, you know, people are very high on their on their quarterback. He had a pretty good year last year. But it's going to be an entirely different um offensive line.
00:46:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:46:45
Jordan
Like, I mean, everything.
00:46:45
Get Defensive Sports Network
Team, line, everything. Yeah.
00:46:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
So yeah. so
00:46:50
Jordan
I just, I don't fully buy the hype of Texas Tech because I understand that the talent may be there, but i feel like in more cases than not, the transfer thing, the especially the all transfer thing, doesn't work.
00:46:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:47:07
Jordan
And all of the teams that sort of start that way in general, they end up moving sort of away from it. And so it's tough.
00:47:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes. The only team that has been successful with a bunch of transfers is TCU women's basketball. That is the only place I've seen it where the entire team, except for the girl who will be beating people, was transfers.
00:47:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
that's the only place That's the only place that I have seen it where they have managed to quite literally turn the program around off the backs of everybody getting transferred.
00:47:29
Jordan
yeah It's 105. Yeah.
00:47:37
Get Defensive Sports Network
But that's also a team that has a roster of 15. This is a roster of, i don't know how many in college men's basketball anymore because of all this stuff in NIL. hundred What it, 85 now? 115?
00:47:48
Jordan
it's hundred and five
00:47:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
What is it? 105. So obviously, small case study.
00:47:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
But I mean, here's the thing. I'll put it like this, though, too, because you know I'm always real good at seeing both sides. If Texas Tech actually has success off of this, I can't wait to watch the documentary about it.
00:48:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
Because this is historic.
00:48:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
What they're doing is historic. Bringing in this many transfers at one time, if that immediately translates to success, they have completely changed the landscape of how you can build football team.
00:48:16
Jordan
Yeah, so the other thing with that, though, is you have to talk about what is success.
00:48:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:48:21
Jordan
And so Texas Tech, while maybe not like a media darling sort of situation, they've been to four straight bowl games.
00:48:28
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:48:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:48:31
Jordan
In 2021, they won seven games. 2022, they won eight games. 23, they won seven. 24, they won eight. So this isn't even like the Colorado thing where, like, you go from three to nine, everyone loves you.
00:48:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
They're coming from trash. Yeah. Yeah.
00:48:43
Jordan
You're already at seven, eight.
00:48:45
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:48:45
Jordan
You need to win 10. Like, like this isn't like you can't bring in all these transfers and win one extra game.
00:48:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:48:51
Jordan
Like nobody's going to be happy about nine and three, especially if that nine and three doesn't include a spot in the big 12 championship game.
00:48:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:49:00
Jordan
And so that's the other thing.
00:49:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
that's what i was getting at.
00:49:02
Jordan
Like, it's different for a same conference. It's different for Colorado, right? It's different for, say, Nebraska, who hasn't made a bowl game in million years.
00:49:13
Jordan
You bring in transfers.
00:49:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
years or whatever yeah
00:49:14
Jordan
You bring in a new coach. Everyone's happy with 6-6 because you haven't won six games in 10 years, right?
00:49:17
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah in 10 10 years literally 10 years yeah yeah oh no this is championship or bust it's championship or bust then that's what i'm saying if they actually make it if they actually make it to the big 12 championship
00:49:21
Jordan
so So, like, but you're eight. You won eight. You've been to four straight bowl games. This is to get you over the top.
00:49:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
They actually put up a good performance in it because a lot of people are saying that the trial championship could potentially be ASU and Texas Tech. If they make it there and they get that playoff spot, and honestly, even if they can bounce out of the first round, if they get that playoff spot, they win the championship.
00:49:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
I would not be shocked the absolute chaos that would ensue in the transfer portal after that because you just proved you prove that it's possible. Now, Granted, the next year is always what matters too, right?
00:50:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
But still, if you come in and you come in hot, you get this many transfers and y'all have immediate success, that changes the landscape for a lot of people as far as how the transfer portal can be utilized.
00:50:19
Jordan
Yeah, i I disagree with that, but only because i just don't think...
00:50:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
you always get to do your thing.
00:50:25
Jordan
No, I disagree with it because we've seen it... Like, this isn't the first team that's... Like, you mentioned, like...
00:50:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
Let's try it. oh Oh yeah, of course, yeah.
00:50:31
Jordan
Yeah, and we've seen that it just doesn't maintain. So, like, I do agree that people are going to try it, but I think it's like...
00:50:34
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah would be interesting yeah they're gluttonous and greedy yeah
00:50:41
Jordan
I mean, a lot of teams are already trying it. Texas Tech is just has become the poster of it because their individual billionaire is very like public about it. so And, ah ah you know again, you could argue that they're being the most successful because, again, the 13 four-star transfers, like they are bringing in a really you know a really good number.
00:51:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:51:02
Jordan
but But the other thing yeah the other thing that you sort of have to say with this, too, is just they're bringing in that number because they have to.
00:51:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:51:10
Jordan
And yes, they're four-star transfers, but as soon as you take this conversation out of the Big 12, how do they compare it to Alabama, to Ohio State, to Oregon, to Penn State, to Texas?
00:51:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
What are we talking about? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:51:21
Jordan
to you know like You are still doing this to compete in your conference.
00:51:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
No.
00:51:28
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
00:51:28
Jordan
Let's be clear, this is not making them a national championship contender.
00:51:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
no
00:51:32
Jordan
Now, if it works, maybe they have more buy-in. Maybe they keep doing it. Maybe eventually it goes somewhere. But i until proven otherwise, and the first team that's going to prove this, the first team that's going to prove this is Oregon.
00:51:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
This is not a way to build a team.
00:51:46
Jordan
Until proven otherwise, an all-transfer team, a team that is not building through high school recruiting, is not going to win a national championship, in my opinion. And even Oregon is like shifting a little bit.
00:51:57
Jordan
They are still doing transfers, but like when you look at Oregon's roster, a lot of the players are going to be like people that they did in high school.
00:52:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
Not at the same level.
00:52:06
Jordan
And I've had this conversation with Oregon where I'm like, hey, this transfer quarterback thing, like, oh, I don't know, because all it takes is you not to hit and then you have no depth. Like, you know, so we'll see.
00:52:17
Get Defensive Sports Network
I agree.
00:52:19
Get Defensive Sports Network
They are the biggest wild card in the big 12 though, at this point.
00:52:22
Jordan
and The biggest wild card in the biggest wild card conference. like it's just It's crazy.
00:52:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
Isn't that and that something?
00:52:26
Jordan
It's going to entertaining.
00:52:27
Get Defensive Sports Network
This is going to be so much fun to watch.
00:52:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
The big 12, I'm telling you, man, just tap in. Because when you're talking about like competitiveness level, I really do think that these, because of all of the team's different situations, whether they're in rebuilds versus You know, coming off of having stars versus coaching changes, coordinator changes, all this.
00:52:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
There's so much mercurialness in this in this particular league that, honestly, it really is any given Saturday with the Big 12. Like, any given Saturday.
00:53:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
And I love it. I love it. I'm not the biggest fan of most of these brands, but except for Colorado, obviously. But I love it.
00:53:08
Jordan
Yeah. um Top transfers, just a couple of names.
00:53:14
Jordan
We'll see. For me, i think the I think the two most, and I really hate doing this because I'm very much not like a super heavy quarterback person.
00:53:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
um thank you
00:53:25
Jordan
And I hate when everyone's like, the most impactful player is a quarterback. Like, i get it. Yes, it's true.
00:53:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, okay
00:53:31
Jordan
But like, there are other things to talk about. So I hate that the first two names of mine are going to be quarterbacks, but it is true for a very specific reason. The first one is Caden Salters, Colorado.
00:53:41
Jordan
I know we don't like to say this, but Caden Salter may be a better quarterback than Shador Sanders. So like, and Shador wasn't bad.
00:53:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
okay. Probably, honestly.
00:53:49
Jordan
Like, don't get me wrong. Like, I never thought he was a first round talent. I also didn't think he was a fourth round talent, right? There are rounds in between there. um But Caden, especially, especially like, and I do think that Shador probably has more NFL potential.
00:53:58
Get Defensive Sports Network
Second round,
00:54:03
Jordan
But when we're talking about college, having a guy who can throw for 2,800 yards and run for 1,000 and give you 44 touchdowns alone, right? And you could argue that he may have better players at Colorado than he had at Liberty, right?
00:54:20
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:54:20
Jordan
That is interesting, right? And, like, that's, like, like you know?
00:54:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
That's something to say. Yeah, no, you're right. But also it's a brilliant move. You lose Shador, you go and you get a fucking stud. Like that's what you do.
00:54:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
You don't, yeah, and you don't hope that this backup is going to, no, you go get you a fucking stud.
00:54:32
Jordan
Two plus two is four.
00:54:37
Jordan
Yeah. and And then the other guy is Devin Dampierre from New Mexico, who is similar. He's now at Utah. Utah, in my opinion, when this conference happened, I said the Big 12 is not going to one team that, like, dominates.
00:54:50
Jordan
But if they do, it is going to be Utah.
00:54:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
It's gonna be Utah.
00:54:53
Jordan
And then Utah never got that chance because of injuries. They just got injured and injured and injured and injured.
00:54:56
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:54:58
Jordan
Just so, like, like...
00:54:59
Get Defensive Sports Network
Somebody was always in a in a hoodie on the sidelines.
00:55:00
Jordan
The level, yes, the level of injury that they dealt with is crazy. And so this year, they finally have a new quarterback. They're bringing a new offensive coordinator. They still have that good defense.
00:55:12
Jordan
And so it's like, we're not really talking about Utah, but if Devin Dampere is that guy, and you pair it with the fact that like Utah has, we're talking about offensive line,
00:55:24
Jordan
um I'm reading these things and listening to these podcasts. Utah, I believe, has two first-round picks on their offensive line.
00:55:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, very.
00:55:30
Jordan
So they're going to have a great โ they always have a great offensive line. So you're going to give this good quarterback a fucking brick wall to stand behind and then a good defense.
00:55:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
A good?
00:55:41
Jordan
And it's like, hey, now.
00:55:43
Get Defensive Sports Network
Utah might be back.
00:55:44
Jordan
you You know, like like but like, I'm talking about the Utah that was beating up on USC that was winning the Pac-12.
00:55:45
Get Defensive Sports Network
Utah might just be back. ah
00:55:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
No, yeah. Vintage Utah, yeah.
00:55:53
Jordan
Like, you know I'm saying? Like, you're bringing that team into the Big 12. When they came into the Big 12, I was like, damn, the Big 12 better watch out. And then the injuries happened.
00:55:59
Get Defensive Sports Network
Don't sleep.
00:56:00
Jordan
This is the watch out year. Like, this might be the watch out year. This might be UC to Utah that was giving Caleb Williams hell.
00:56:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
don sleep
00:56:08
Jordan
Like, UC to Utah that that was that was smacking up Oregon. like Like, you might see that Utah. And if you see that one, The Big 12 just better hope and pray.
00:56:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
Everybody needs be scared. I'll say this, Devin Dampierre is like the perfect name for somebody who like should be playing for this.
00:56:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like it's just a perfect name. Like it's, I love it. Anyways, continue with our number, or I'm sorry, top transfers. i don't know why I can't talk.
00:56:30
Jordan
yeah So those two. And then the last one that I have, I have two more.
00:56:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, okay.
00:56:36
Jordan
um the The next one I have is Chase Soho, wide receiver, Iowa State. Iowa State is not super being talked about in some of these conversations, and it's because they lost their two best wide receivers and some other things.
00:56:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:56:48
Jordan
but like They won 10 games last year. They technically should be in this conversation. For them to get back into this conversation, they need someone for their quarterback to throw to. So if Chase can, like, I mean, Iowa had the set, like, it was Ohio State and Iowa State.
00:57:03
Jordan
Like, I know that sounds crazy, but, like, Ohio State had two wide receivers with over 1,000 yards.
00:57:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
00:57:09
Jordan
Only one other program did that. It was Iowa State.
00:57:12
Get Defensive Sports Network
I will say.
00:57:12
Jordan
It wasn't Oregon. It wasn't Bama. It wasn't Texas. It wasn't Georgia. It wasn't USC.
00:57:17
Get Defensive Sports Network
Which is crazy that What's This Base didn't get a thousand yards.
00:57:19
Jordan
It wasn't, it was, who?
00:57:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
What's his name? Ryan Williams? Is that the Bama guy?
00:57:24
Jordan
no, no. It's two wide receivers with 1,000 yards.
00:57:27
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, oh, oh, oh, gotcha, gotcha, gotcha, gotcha.
00:57:28
Jordan
Yeah, Ryan, actually, Ryan Williams, i don't think he got, i don't think he got 1,000 yards either.
00:57:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm caught
00:57:32
Jordan
He was really close. He was like nine something. He got, he, yeah, he like fell off a little bit.
00:57:34
Get Defensive Sports Network
up. Damn, that's crazy. yeah
00:57:36
Jordan
He hit a rookie's fault. um So, yeah. And the last one, because just near and dear to my heart, have to pick a linebacker. have to pick a defensive guy. um Trey Latham, West Virginia linebacker. He's going to Kansas.
00:57:53
Get Defensive Sports Network
Kansas is on my watch list, let me tell you.
00:57:55
Get Defensive Sports Network
Kansas is on my watch list.
00:57:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
I know we didn't talk about them because we were just talking about storylines. Kansas, dude, because their record really doesn't show how many games they were really just in. They were in so many of those games.
00:58:09
Get Defensive Sports Network
Their biggest issue was finishing. Their biggest issue was being ah understanding what it takes to win under pressure. The group, for the most part, from what I understand, is pretty consistent. I know they lost... um
00:58:20
Get Defensive Sports Network
What is his name? They were chanting his name in the last game. Is it Devin Miles? Am I making a name?
00:58:24
Jordan
I don't know. It's Devin Neal.
00:58:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
Devin Neal.
00:58:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
Devin Neal.
00:58:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, my God.
00:58:34
Jordan
Talk about running back.
00:58:35
Get Defensive Sports Network
Literally, what the heck?
00:58:36
Jordan
Talk about, talk about, hey, boy.
00:58:37
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, we did not talk about Devin Neal enough last season. We really, really didn't.
00:58:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
But the thing I'm getting at with Kansas is Kansas, they're just a couple pieces away.
00:58:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
They really, really are.
00:58:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
So, yeah. Shout out to them. They also got that. Didn't they get another linebacker? um He has an interesting name.
00:58:54
Jordan
Yeah, they did. They did. I do not know him though, so he could not be on the list because I didn't just want to say things. i had to talk about someone that I knew.
00:59:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
Screaming. Well, he came from South Carolina, so but we'll see.
00:59:01
Jordan
Yeah, I had to talk about someone that I knew. And yeah.
00:59:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
We'll see. His name is Bengali Kamara, which I love that last name.
00:59:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
Anyways, Chow, moving swiftly along from the transfers. So the contenders for the Big Ten. I'm going to keep saying big 10 and then when we have the big 10 episode, I'm going to keep saying big 12.
00:59:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
They should be named different.
00:59:24
Jordan
Don't disrespect me.
00:59:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
Why they both got to be big. I don't understand.
00:59:28
Jordan
And only one is the biggest, the largest.
00:59:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
The largest, correct. So
00:59:31
Jordan
Listen, which is hilarious because the Big 12 has all the Texas schools, and that's definitely a reference from a Texas rapper, but I'm absolutely talking about the Big 10.
00:59:38
Get Defensive Sports Network
that should be, no, we ah we know.
00:59:41
Jordan
Look, look, look, know what I'm saying?
00:59:43
Get Defensive Sports Network
We knew, but we were aware. Okay.
00:59:46
Jordan
That wasn't a, it wasn't under, like you weren't confused at all? Like you...
00:59:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
No, I was not confused. You're an Ohio State fan. Anyway, Chow. So the contenders for the Big 12. Who do we think is going to win the Big 12? We have selected, and by simply I mean Jordan, has selected four schools.
01:00:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
Because I agreed. Like when I saw who you put, I was like, yes, absolutely.
01:00:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
So the four schools that we think are going to be in the conversation for contending for the Big 12 are as follows. Arizona State, obviously. Baylor, Texas Tech, and Utah.
01:00:20
Get Defensive Sports Network
Baylor, we didn't get a chance to really talk too much about. I'm not going to say nothing about Baylor because I have people Baylor, but if you feel like talking about Baylor, please go ahead.
01:00:28
Jordan
Yeah, i guess I guess we should because we did talk yeah like i guess we should because we we talked about everyone else, right?
01:00:28
Get Defensive Sports Network
I think Baylor is similar to my people in Michigan.
01:00:35
Jordan
um baylor Basically, Baylor started the year looking like trash, and then in the middle of the year, they became really good.
01:00:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
They play football. Yep. They should have stayed trashed.
01:00:45
Get Defensive Sports Network
Crazy.
01:00:46
Jordan
They have... And it's funny how this works. Like, the arguably the three best quarterbacks in the conference are on the three tenders. It's Arizona State, Baylor, and Texas Tech.
01:00:55
Get Defensive Sports Network
well they Well, there you go.
01:01:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
There you go.
01:01:01
Jordan
So, first of all, like, they they ended the year winning six straight.
01:01:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
Six games in a row. Yep.
01:01:08
Jordan
they were one of the teams They were one of the teams also, like, Kansas or Kansas State, one of the Kansas teams that like changed the sort of picture in the Big 12 last year because of who they were beating and sort of win and stuff like that.
01:01:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
Kansas. It was Kansas.
01:01:26
Jordan
um And they are bringing everyone back, right? they they Their offense last year, led by Jake Spavadol, basically added two touchdowns.
01:01:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
01:01:40
Jordan
went from 23 points per game to 35. um They returned nine starters, including the quarterback, Sawyer Robinson. Robinson did not start all year, right?
01:01:52
Jordan
And he ended up throwing for 3,000 yards and 28 touchdowns. And our last episode we talked about, and I want to be clear, and do not think he's winning the Heisman, but we talked about, is there going to be any quarterback that's going to throw for 4,000 yards?
01:02:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. Yeah.
01:02:07
Jordan
he's someone that's going to be close. Like Heisman or not, although if Baylor wins the championship, he's probably going to be in contention.
01:02:09
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:02:15
Jordan
He's like, again, he didn't start the whole year. He threw for 3,000 yards and 28 touchdowns. If you give him a couple extra games, where does that end up?
01:02:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
The whole year.
01:02:24
Jordan
You know what Like 3,500, right?
01:02:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. Yeah.
01:02:27
Jordan
33 touchdowns. So um they just they're going to have an offense that's hard to stop. Dave Aranda is a defensive coach. They're bringing back just about everyone, literally.
01:02:38
Jordan
They had a backfield duo who featured a 1,000-yard rusher and a 600-yard rusher. Both of them come back. One of them being Bryson Washington, who was freshman All-American. He rushed for 1,000 yards and had six 100-yard games.
01:02:56
Jordan
So it's not just the quarterback.
01:02:56
Get Defensive Sports Network
Well, period.
01:02:58
Jordan
They did. well and They were just good on offense.
01:03:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
They got squad. They got little squad.
01:03:02
Jordan
They were just good offense. They were just good on offense.
01:03:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, yeah.
01:03:04
Jordan
End of the day. They were good on offense. They did lose a couple of people on defense, but you know they brought in some transfers.
01:03:11
Get Defensive Sports Network
Do they have a defensive coordinator?
01:03:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
Do they have a defensive coordinator? Because wasn't the head coach?
01:03:16
Jordan
Yeah. He was. Who did they hire? Who did they hire?
01:03:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm sorry. I can read it myself, but I'm just like...
Baylor's Defensive Changes
01:03:25
Jordan
I don't remember who they hired.
01:03:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
I know I read it that he was doing play calling.
01:03:27
Jordan
You are correct in that. See, he was paying attention last year. you College football four got you blocked in. Dave Miranda basically took over defensive play calling last year because his coordinator was asked. I don't remember who they hired, but he should not be doing that this year.
01:03:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
His coordinator was asses sending me.
01:03:44
Get Defensive Sports Network
um I'll say this.
01:03:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
We played them this year. By we, I mean SMU. um It's been a minute since we played Baylor. I actually can't tell you. like I think I was in undergrad the last time we played Baylor at Baylor.
01:04:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
I think we played Baylor at Baylor. That was the last time that I recall.
01:04:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
And that had to at least be my freshman year because I wasn't working for the team yet. oh
01:04:09
Get Defensive Sports Network
But yeah that's all I care about.
01:04:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
And we played them early. They're the second game of the year for us.
01:04:16
Jordan
Yep. And so, yeah, so it's just like when you have that offense, offense scores points, right? Offense, it helps.
01:04:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes, it is. Yeah.
01:04:23
Jordan
They last year, they ended 19th in scoring offense, 21st in points per play, 20th in total offense, 24th in yards per play. They were a top 25 offense in almost everything. Yeah.
01:04:35
Jordan
and And as long as their defense gets better, because they weren't very good, again, but of course, which is why the the head coach was calling defensive plays, this is a team that's going to contend. So I think that Arizona State, Baylor, Texas Tech, and Utah are the named.
01:04:51
Jordan
And again, Utah not a consensus. Excuse me, but I'm putting that in there because I believe in them.
01:04:55
Get Defensive Sports Network
and I agree.
01:04:56
Jordan
So those are the sort of four that I think we should be looking at.
01:04:59
Get Defensive Sports Network
I think Baylor and Texas Tech are very interesting case study because I don't think it's going to be both of them. It's going to be one of them. And the the difference maker is going to be continuity versus transfer portal building.
01:05:14
Jordan
That's podcasting.
01:05:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
That's going to be the main
01:05:16
Jordan
You see that? that That's podcasting right there. We talking continuity versus Texas transfers. Transfer tech.
01:05:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
We're going to call it Texas Tech, Transfer Tech all year.
01:05:28
Jordan
There we go. Transfer tech.
01:05:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
But Baylor and Texas Tech, who gets the spot? It is going to be, the determining factor will be whether it was the continuity versus how long it takes for those transfers to actually match.
Pac-12 Teams' Prospects: Arizona State & Utah
01:05:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
And then when it comes to ASU and Utah, it's going to be, who's going to bounce back? up Who's going bounce back the best, right? ASU is going have to bounce back from not having Cam. Utah is going to have to bounce back from the fact that their quarterback will actually hopefully be able to play the entire season.
01:05:52
Jordan
Yeah, was he is because because they're their lives, yeah, you know, knock on wood.
01:05:53
Get Defensive Sports Network
oh And the rest of the team. And the rest of the team. If everybody could just play, that would be fabulous for Utah.
01:06:01
Jordan
Because that hasn't happened in two years.
01:06:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
No, literally. So if everybody at Utah just not be on crutches or have anything taped up or be on the sideline in hoodies, I think we're going to get somewhere.
01:06:13
Jordan
You know what? I'm banning hoodies for Utah. No more hoodies.
01:06:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
more hoodies.
01:06:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
no morehood
01:06:19
Jordan
I don't want to sniff a hoodie. They were so injured. Hold on. where Let me find this.
01:06:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh my god, it was bad. was so bad.
01:06:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
was so- they were like their third string. It was bad.
01:06:28
Jordan
Yeah, they they were so injured that they snapped a 10-year streak.
01:06:35
Get Defensive Sports Network
years, bro.
01:06:36
Jordan
10 years. they've always They've had a winning season every season for 10 years, and they were so injured that Kyle Whittingham, who was one of the best coaches of all time, couldn't do it.
01:06:44
Get Defensive Sports Network
Said it was the difficult year.
01:06:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
It was most difficult year in his career.
01:06:48
Jordan
They started out 4-0, by the way.
01:06:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:06:52
Jordan
And then the injuries happened, and they lost seven straight, like,
01:06:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
And then they lost their quarterback. Yeah. Yeah.
01:06:55
Jordan
ah Like, literally, like, they were they were good, and then they fell apart and lost basically every game, every remaining game.
01:06:56
Get Defensive Sports Network
So Utah is,
01:07:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah.
01:07:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, it's goingnna be the battle of the it's going to be the battle of the bounce back and then the battle of continuity.
01:07:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
And those either, neither Baylor nor Texas Tech are in it and it's ASU and Utah.
01:07:12
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm just going to give my opinions for real for real. Or it's one of the two Texas schools and probably ASU. Because like Utah, I don't know. Because again, like that's just something you can't predict because if they have the same, I would hope they don't have the same situation.
01:07:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
But we're just going to have to, but like at end of the day, like
01:07:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
We're just have to see, like we're just gonna have to see how it turns out. I think the next topic we have are the dark horses of the conference.
01:07:37
Get Defensive Sports Network
all Oh, go ahead.
01:07:38
Jordan
Well, before we do that, though, i one I want to add one quick emerging storyline that I'm doing after as we're as there're as we're sort of looking through this.
01:07:43
Get Defensive Sports Network
Now we're going all the way back to the top of the agenda.
01:07:47
Jordan
I don't know how many of these quarterbacks are going to be NFL talent. So that does matter and the end goal, winning a national championship.
01:07:58
Jordan
But they they have so many like good college quarterbacks. like devin like We talked about Caden Stultzers, and so I want to read Devin Dampier's stats. Devin Dampierre. quarterback at Utah now.
01:08:10
Jordan
He racked up 3,900 yards, including 1,184 rushing and 31 total touchdowns. So, like, we got some guys.
01:08:21
Jordan
Like, these defenses, like, again, who's going to go pro?
01:08:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh yeah.
01:08:26
Jordan
That doesn't matter. It's a college podcast. Baylor got a quarterback. ASU has a quarterback. Texas Tech has a quarterback. Utah has a quarterback. colorado Colorado has a quarterback.
01:08:37
Jordan
And so it's like, you know, we may get old Big 12. Like, but do we talk about Patrick Mahomes? We may get that Big 12.
01:08:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
We may get the big 12 back for real, for real.
01:08:47
Jordan
We may get Texas Tech versus Oklahoma 55-51. like that Like, listen, yeah first of all, that was some of the best football before I've ever seen in my life.
01:08:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
What a time to be alive.
01:08:59
Jordan
Like, it was so disgusting because nobody had played any
WNBA All-Star Weekend vs. Men's Games
01:09:03
Jordan
level of defense. But just watching, like, watching, like, Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield and, like, all these dudes put up, like, eight touchdowns.
01:09:08
Get Defensive Sports Network
And they're just going back and forth.
01:09:10
Jordan
Like, yes, it was โ
01:09:11
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm just screaming. During the WNBA All-Star game last night, Elle Duncan said, just like a girl's trip in Cabo, there was no D. And I said, this is when it's time to turn it off, wrap it up.
01:09:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
It's time to wrap it up. Because Elle is the most unhinged person on television. I want to beat her. I want to be the most unhinged person on television. She is an inspiration. um
01:09:31
Jordan
Dark horses, as you were saying.
01:09:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
Dark Horse schools, we've beaten, we've belabored at this point, but Colorado obviously is a dark horse for us. um But you have also put Houston on here. And I am very interested to hear how Houston is a dark horse because, you know, I also have to be with Houston. and it's only because they tried to block SMU for joining the Big 12. But anyways.
01:09:50
Jordan
Yeah. So I think that for, okay, so I'm just going be honest. A lot of Houston being on here is the coach. Like, Willie Fritz is an amazing coach. He was 23-5 at Tulane in his final and his final two seasons.
01:10:08
Jordan
um If he was at Tulane last year, he took this job because of bigger, more money, et cetera. If he was at Tulane last year, I'm sorry, Aston Gentry, you would have been out of the playoffs.
01:10:19
Jordan
Tulane would have been in the playoffs. That's how good he would have had them. um
01:10:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
right.
01:10:23
Jordan
she And so it's just one of those things where it's like,
01:10:29
Jordan
Listen, sometimes like Indiana last year, you can just say, i don't know everything about the team, but I know that coach and I know all of his teams are good
Houston as a Dark Horse in the Big 12
01:10:42
Jordan
and they're going to be good again.
01:10:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
And that's And that's enough.
01:10:43
Jordan
And they were bad last year because Houston was in one of the worst places you could possibly be. But i they also added some good transfers. They have this coach. They were sort of showing some, like, fight at the end. And so it's just like, if we're talking Dark Horse, I'm going to pick the team that has one of, if not the best coach in the conference and has won other places and is going into his second year where he's able to sort of make the program more himself.
01:11:14
Jordan
Now, am I a year early on then?
01:11:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. Third best transfer all.
01:11:17
Jordan
maybe I could be a year early on then, but that's why it's Dark Horse. You know what I'm saying?
01:11:20
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:11:20
Jordan
Like, but who knows?
01:11:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
Don't count them out.
01:11:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
Don't count them out.
01:11:23
Jordan
So um they, like, they they, and they sort of just sort of hired, like, they sort of struggled everywhere last year, but he's sort of bringing, like, he's bringing back his old offensive coordinator who was there when they won 11 wins.
01:11:41
Jordan
um They, and then the the other piece of this, and I want to be clear,
01:11:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
Hmm.
01:11:46
Jordan
I'm not the biggest fan of this person, but if he stays healthy, he could easily, he could day one be the best quarterback in the Big 12. And that's Connor Wegman from Texas A&M.
01:11:57
Jordan
Like, Connor Wegman sort of had an issue where like he was just always injured, and then Texas A&M was also coached really poorly, so they didn't do well with, like, do we bring him back when he's injured? Does he play? Especially, like, and to be fair, on his end, he didn't,
01:12:13
Jordan
fully secure the job, right? So there is some of that, but the level of talent that he has and what he's able to do, that if he can stay healthy, he could day one be the best quarterback in the conference.
01:12:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
You can make some things happen. Yeah.
01:12:26
Jordan
Like this is a quarterback that when he came in, people were saying first round draft pick.
01:12:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:12:31
Jordan
He has not lived up to that. He may never live up to that because certain people don't, but if he gets, even if he gets close to it in this conference, right?
01:12:42
Jordan
You know what mean? Like that could do it.
01:12:43
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
01:12:43
Jordan
So you add the coach, you add Connor Wegman. um And so he started 13 games, right? That's a season. Essentially, in those 13 games, he amassed 2,700 yards and touchdowns.
01:12:59
Jordan
Right. They're going to be playing lesser defenses. just the truth because he's not in the SEC anymore. They do have some talent. And so, again, don't know.
01:13:11
Jordan
It's hard to say, of course. But.
01:13:16
Jordan
you have the coach? You have a quarterback who has at least the ceiling to go pretty far. You have a schedule. were you only were you where you only play Texas Tech and Baylor, but you play Baylor at the end of the season.
01:13:32
Jordan
So, like, you have the chance to sort of work into your schedule and and sort of be good.
01:13:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:13:37
Jordan
you You had some some solid transfers. I think that in a conference where literally anything can happen, i think that they're at least a dark horse.
01:13:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
Houston could rise to the top. Okay, period. Love that for Houston. um Well, obviously our critical matchups are pretty in tune to with where this conversation has been going this entire time. So, of course, we're going to be looking at Utah versus ASU. I mean, duh.
01:14:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
weve We've got weve gotta to tune into that one. I don't know exactly what week that game is. um I can look it up real quick because I don't know which week that game is. um
01:14:20
Jordan
Yeah, so, hold on.
01:14:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
Which week is that? Jesus. Where is Utah? Sorry.
01:14:25
Jordan
They're, okay, I have it.
01:14:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm trying.
01:14:26
Jordan
So, Utah, as a team that I sort of put in here as ah as a sort of contender, I think there's two things that's going to happen.
01:14:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, there we go.
01:14:34
Jordan
Either Utah going to be real contender, or they're going to ruin someone's season because they play the other contenders.
01:14:34
Get Defensive Sports Network
Week eight.
01:14:41
Jordan
They play Arizona State, they play Baylor, they play Texas Tech. They are going to win one of those games. They play texas tech on two they play Texas Tech week four. When you have a bunch of transfers, that's easily a game that they could win, which could then put Texas Tech in a place where they almost have to be perfect moving forward.
01:14:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
Mm-hmm.
01:14:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
I can lose. Yeah.
01:15:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
01:15:02
Jordan
um They play Baylor week nine or whatever, like one of the last games of the season, week 10. um That could be a thing that happened last year where like,
01:15:15
Jordan
Baylor is supposed to be winning the conference. They're doing well. And then they lose two weeks before the season's over. So um Utah versus Arizona State, Texas Tech, and Baylor are just games that I have eyes on.
01:15:27
Jordan
I think those are some of the most critical matchups um because of, obviously, what we're talking about here as who's going to win and who's going make it to the conference.
01:15:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
The results. Yeah.
01:15:38
Jordan
um And then another game that I have that I don't think has as much weight, but it's just going to be fun as hell, is Iowa State versus Kansas State and Ireland.
01:15:49
Jordan
That is week zero.
01:15:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
cute
01:15:51
Jordan
That game is going to be very fun. That is a rivalry game. um And they decided, why not put it in Ireland? Like, if you can go to Ireland for free, why not? You know what saying?
01:16:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
why the hell i and i am here for globalizing the game i am here for it like
01:16:02
Jordan
And Ireland is Yeah. And like like, I think it was last year there, it was either last or the year before, had been going on to Ireland for a couple of years. maybe The last year, the year before the team, the stadiums like internet went down so they couldn't charge.
01:16:17
Jordan
And so they just gave out free beer. That is never happening in the United States.
01:16:20
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, yes.
01:16:20
Jordan
That is never happening in the United States. They're they're like,
01:16:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
Well, one thing and I will say is in the United States, they are doing a lot more of the $1, $2, $3, like, things at the stadiums, which I think is really cool. Because, first of all, these tickets are high. The travel is high. Like, the least you can do is let me buy a hot dog for a buck and ah beer for $3. Like, please.
01:16:38
Get Defensive Sports Network
um So, good times. um Basically, we say all this to say that the Big 12 is going to be a really, really fun
Big 12 Playoff Chances
01:16:45
Get Defensive Sports Network
conference. But here's one thing that I think both of us are standing 10 toes down on. And that is the number of playoff participants that the Big 12 will inevitably have.
01:16:53
Get Defensive Sports Network
We had this conversation, obviously, when we were talking about if they were to expand to 16 teams, you know, they guarantee the Big 12 two spots, whatever. Should they guarantee them two spots? Well, on average, you only have this many teams, whatever, blah, blah, blah.
01:17:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
Even with all of this conversation, I personally, and I think and we both believe that there's still only one of these mofos coming out here and going to the playoffs.
01:17:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
It's just one. Sorry. Sorry. It's just one. don't know who. I can't tell you all of that. I think our pick was Arizona State, though, if I'm not mistaken, when we talked about it a couple weeks ago.
01:17:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
But.
01:17:25
Jordan
Well, if you remember, ah you have to pick one because this is all culminating into our playoff show at the end. And whoever we pick to win the conference is who we have to pick in that playoff show.
01:17:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
and
01:17:37
Jordan
So we are going to pick.
01:17:37
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
01:17:39
Jordan
But to your point of why it's only going to be one, right? The Big Ten had ah four teams get in last year, right? To do that, all of those teams had two or less loss, two...
01:17:55
Get Defensive Sports Network
Or less. Yeah. Yeah. You're
01:17:57
Jordan
Meaning when they went to the Big Ten championship game, there was a team that had no losses. There was a team that only had one loss. like And so for the big for any conference to get two or more, you have to have multiple teams that have less than two losses because you cannot go to the conference championship game with two teams that have two losses and one of them gets a third.
01:18:19
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:18:19
Jordan
Like that is step number one. Like the Big Ten and the SEC is always going to have two because they're always going to have two teams that don't have two losses.
01:18:28
Get Defensive Sports Network
That they'll have to.
01:18:28
Jordan
it just works out that way.
01:18:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:18:29
Jordan
Like the math, it's hard to get in at nine and three.
01:18:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:18:32
Jordan
If you're nine and three, you have to win the conference. Like, so the thing is, if the Big 12 lives up to what we're saying it's going to be, which is and literally any given Saturday, it is then also hard to believe that there's any team who gets through this unscathed.
01:18:35
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:18:47
Jordan
And if that is the case, they're going to beat each other up.
01:18:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
01:18:49
Jordan
That's what they do every single year. It's going to be amazing to watch. We're going to love every second of it. But then at the end, like any good... Any good old time movie, you're going to be like someone's going to be walking across the battlefield checking the dead it's going to be everybody.
01:19:04
Jordan
in this like It's like, yeah, like everyone's going to be limping away.
01:19:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
It's going to be the survivor's remorse is going to be at all time. No, that's yeah. It'll be, it'll be cannibalism. They with the big 12, unfortunately they're in the position that a lot of other leagues are not in. And that is they quite literally have to cannibalize one another to to get to where they need to get to because there's just not as much leeway for them as there are for the other conferences, like you mentioned.
01:19:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
I will be genuinely surprised, though, if they manage to get two in. I will say. I will be surprised. um But, yeah.
01:19:36
Jordan
And it's not going every year. um But, yeah I think that, I think it's only one. So we have to put it on the table. We got to do it. We have to say it.
01:19:49
Jordan
We are a podcast that believes in speaking with our full chest.
01:19:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
Are we?
01:20:07
Jordan
I'm going to get freaky with this one. I'm going to go Utah Baylor.
01:20:12
Get Defensive Sports Network
Gross. That is freaky. You are correct. I am freaked out, actually. I'm disgusted, actually, we at that.
01:20:16
Jordan
I'm going to go. oh I believe that one? This is hard.
01:20:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
I okay.
01:20:25
Jordan
Utah for sure. But do i believe do i really believe that one?
01:20:28
Get Defensive Sports Network
okay
01:20:31
Jordan
But Arizona State, we just did this whole thing and I talked myself out of all of this.
01:20:35
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, no. Okay. So why am I sitting here feeling the same way? I'm like, okay, we just sat here. We didn't talk about all these teams. Okay, here we go. Y'all got your preview. Oh my gosh. And you're getting fed today an hour and 20 minutes, please.
01:20:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
And I'm like, now that we're here, I'm like, wait, no, I don't want to pick.
01:20:47
Jordan
I talked myself out of everybody. Right.
01:20:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
Cause here's the thing. Here's the thing that's, that's hanging me up, right? Is this is the big 12.
01:20:56
Get Defensive Sports Network
So we can very well, cause this happened last year. The six or five or whatever teams that we discussed heavily for the Big 12 last year, I don't think any of them ended up even as contenders by the end of it.
01:21:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
So it's like we could really be having this conversation just off the stats, vibes, and all this other stuff. And then it's Houston that ends up winning into the Big 12. And it's like, well, shit. like Because they're just so mercurial. So I'm like, damn, I feel like no matter what I pick, I'm going to be wrong because it's going to be a dark horse.
01:21:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
It's going to be a team that, fuck, it could be Colorado ends up in the Big 12. Like, I don't know. Or TCU might have a bounce back moment and they end up like teams that we haven't even talked about.
01:21:31
Jordan
Yeah, actually, you just, you just, yeah, you just sort of stole mine.
01:21:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
That's what I'm just like, fuck.
01:21:36
Jordan
Because I'm like going through it and I was thinking the same thing and you literally like spoke what I was thinking into existence. I'm picking TCU. It's going to be, it's going to Utah TCU.
01:21:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
See, that's what i'm saying. Like low key, um low key.
01:21:48
Jordan
I'm, yeah, I'm picking Utah TCU.
Predictions for Big 12 Title Game Teams
01:21:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
Okay.
01:21:52
Jordan
TCU also โ we didn't talk about TCU at all, so this is crazy, but they also have a good quarterback.
01:21:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
We didn't. Yeah.
01:21:57
Jordan
Their quarterback is returning. Last season he threw for 3,900 yards. He had multiple 300-plus yard games.
01:22:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
oh
01:22:04
Jordan
um they are they're losing that They are losing their top two wide receivers. um But โ hold on.
01:22:12
Get Defensive Sports Network
But they had a great, they had a great time in the transfer portal too. They did.
01:22:15
Jordan
Yeah, but they they're losing their they're losing their top two wide receivers, but they had four different receivers with over 600 yards.
01:22:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
I mean, they,
01:22:22
Jordan
So they do still have good players coming back, including ah guy who, yes, he was their third or fourth receiver, but he led the he was 10th in FBS with 19.5 yards per catch, and 90% of his catches went for first downs.
01:22:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
Good ones. Yeah.
01:22:39
Jordan
This is Eric McAllister. um They brought in wide receivers, one of which is 6-3.
01:22:44
Get Defensive Sports Network
Damn it.
01:22:50
Jordan
You know what I mean? Like, they they have tight ends, and their defense was really good last year. I'm doing
01:22:58
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:23:00
Jordan
I'm doing it. I'm doing it. I'm i'm doing TCU.
01:23:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, see, that sounds like, and I know we didn't talk about, oh, and we didn't talk about TCU and we didn't talk too, too much about Iowa State.
01:23:02
Jordan
i'm doing utah tcu
01:23:12
Get Defensive Sports Network
And if I'm not mistaken, I think Iowa State, I picked them for the 12 team. Didn't I? I mentioned Iowa would at some point, maybe not Iowa State.
01:23:19
Jordan
I can't remember. Yeah, and Iowa State's another good one. i just think that they don't replace the offensive production. I like their quarterback, Rocco Becht.
01:23:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:23:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
Good, good guy.
01:23:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
Okay. So, so you're going to go Utah TCU. think that's,
01:23:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
I think that's fair. I think, and this is just because the Big 12 is ridiculous. This is like, I'm going off I'm going to tell y'all, I'm going off of who I want to see. Okay.
01:23:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
Not necessarily who may potentially actually end up there, but I don't think I'm going to be correct no matter who I pick. So I'm going to go off of who I want to see. Okay. Y'all ready? Cause this is on, but also if you've been listening to the show for a long time, the first team I say should not be a shock. And that is obviously Colorado.
01:24:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
So I'm going to go say,
01:24:03
Jordan
I wouldn't put that on tape, but i and ah you explained your reasoning, so i understand why.
01:24:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm going to do it because it's the big 12, bro. It's the big 12.
01:24:08
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like we're both going to be wrong. Like it's the big 12.
01:24:11
Jordan
I'm not gonna be- I'm gonna get at least one of mine right.
01:24:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
You're going to get at least one. That's why I said, okay, so my vibes, my who I want to see pick is going Colorado. But I think I'm also going to drink the Kool-Aid with you and say that Utah is in it regardless.
01:24:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
So I'm going to say Colorado, Utah, because at least I can be half right.
01:24:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
At least I'm not ready.
01:24:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
But also, I don't completely think that Colorado is like unable to make it to the conference championship. like I don't think they're unable.
01:24:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
I probably would say like I would maybe believe a little bit more like in Utah as far as what we have on paper. But I don't care um count any of these teams out, really.
01:24:47
Jordan
Yeah, and and we didn't, Yeah, and we didn't spend a lot of time talking about all these teams cause it's just hard with them. But Kansas State is another team who has a chance.
01:24:56
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
01:24:58
Jordan
They're bringing back Avery Johnson, who's an electric freshman, but he he has to cut down some mistakes, but he's a freshman, right?
01:25:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, a stud.
01:25:06
Jordan
um And so you will should sort of expect to do that. Also, Kansas State was in a weird position because they outgained 12 of their 13 opponents but lost. a lot of those games, like they they just weren't sort of closing.
01:25:19
Get Defensive Sports Network
they were They were there, but they didn't they couldn't finish.
01:25:20
Jordan
um and And so like Kansas State is a team that is in this, Iowa State is a team that is in this like, I mean, yeah.
01:25:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:25:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
Everybody's in it really, except for like your your bottom feeders, your Cincinnati, your UCF, your whatever, like everybody's in it.
01:25:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
That's like, ah you could really make a case for like the top like seven, top seven or eight.
01:25:40
Jordan
Yeah, I struggle with BYU. BYU would be a team that's in it, but their quarterback likes to, you know, rape people, so he's no longer on the program.
01:25:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, which is crazy because BYU, don't y'all have an honor code? Y'all have an honor code.
01:25:53
Get Defensive Sports Network
So y'all not supposed to be acting a certain kind of way.
01:25:53
Jordan
Remember, we talked... Yeah.
01:25:55
Get Defensive Sports Network
I learned that on Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.
01:25:55
Jordan
which so Yeah, like, they're not allowed to have sex.
01:25:59
Get Defensive Sports Network
They're not allowed to have sex.
01:26:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
They're allowed to drink. and not allowed to smoke.
01:26:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
They're not allowed to be out past certain hours. Like, that is military boot camp up there.
01:26:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
And you over here, not only doing what you're not supposed to do, but doing it against people's will. Fuck you.
01:26:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, ew.
01:26:14
Jordan
So I have, I started with BYU because they're losing their quarterback and fuck him.
01:26:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
That's gross.
01:26:20
Get Defensive Sports Network
Hmm.
01:26:20
Jordan
So like, I think, so, and honestly what I should have done is I should have expanded the dark horse segment because there's a lot of them. Like I should have included Iowa state and Kansas state and that segment as well, but we sort of got to them a little bit in the end.
01:26:33
Jordan
We had the TCU as well. um
01:26:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
You guys are fed. Okay, this is this is what we think about the Big 12.
01:26:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
So, and we'll be talking about it all season because there's so many matchups just within the Big 12 that I am genuinely interested in. actually have a content idea for you when we get offline.
01:26:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
But yeah
01:26:53
Jordan
Yeah, so anything can happen. um But I am predicting Utah TCU with Utah winning.
01:27:03
Jordan
We are marking this because, like I said, we are building up to our final show, which is where we predict the playoffs. And as any good brand, because no one else does this, we stick to our picks.
01:27:16
Jordan
So when that playoff show comes, I'm
01:27:19
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'd be riding and I'd be dying for my pics.
01:27:20
Jordan
um um um I'm picking Utah.
01:27:20
Get Defensive Sports Network
I do.
01:27:22
Jordan
So um that's our preview.
01:27:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:27:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
Good times.
01:27:25
Jordan
ay Yeah, so let's let's less's let's talk about the stud guns. In our two-minute drill, the WNBA All-Star Weekend happened. First of all, first of all, first of all, the WNBA All-Star Weekend, like personally for me, is like walking embodiment of why almost all of my friends are women.
01:27:45
Jordan
And a lot of them are gay, but that's side note. That's that's not necessarily the point, but I do have a lot of...
01:27:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
He's like, I have a type, but I didn't mean to have a type.
01:27:52
Jordan
Yeah, but like, it just looked so fun. And I'm sorry, none of the men's all-star games ever looked that fun. and NBA, baseball, basketball, like they were they were having a time,
01:28:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
baseball just have All-Star? They just had it, right?
01:28:05
Jordan
Yes, they were having a time. The jokes, the, the, the, like, I mean, literally, Angel Reese was joking with Alyssa Thomas about Alyssa Thomas chokeslamming her last year.
01:28:17
Get Defensive Sports Network
No, literally they were running down the court and she was like,
01:28:19
Jordan
Like, like, it's just, it's just, like but i mean i mean i mean like the and a So to provide a little bit more structure to what we're trying to say, the stud buds, if you don't know who they are, clearly you're not on tick.
01:28:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
unserious nonsense.
01:28:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, I wanted to talk about the step buds.
01:28:34
Jordan
Okay, well, okay, go ahead.
01:28:35
Get Defensive Sports Network
Go ahead.
01:28:37
Jordan
Tell them who the stud buds are.
01:28:38
Get Defensive Sports Network
Sorry. No, go ahead. You can go.
01:28:39
Jordan
No, you got Too late. already gave it to you.
01:28:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
But you already started.
01:28:42
Jordan
Tell him tell them who the stud buds are.
01:28:44
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, but I wasn't going to start there. Whatever. Okay. So basically, basic basically,
01:28:47
Jordan
Well, you don't know. Just tell them who they are, and then we can...
01:28:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
the Stubbuds are Natesha Heidemann and Courtney Williams. They both play for the Minnesota leagues. They also were both in Unrivaled together as well. They started a Twitch account and they called it Stubbuds and they just sit and chat.
01:29:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
And they've been doing this for the entirety of the season.
01:29:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like they started like two or three weeks into the season. Um, But basically they announced that they will be streaming the entire all-star weekend. And so they did a 72 hour straight stream where they went, they took, they, they basically took us everywhere.
01:29:22
Jordan
And the the funny thing about this is only one of them was an all-star. it Which was Courtney Williams.
01:29:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
Only one was all-star. So Courtney Williams actually got an all-star bid.
01:29:28
Jordan
And the teacher Heideman is good, but like she's, she was an all-star and she basically told and she was like, act like you were supposed to be there. Cause you're going with me everywhere.
01:29:37
Get Defensive Sports Network
Act like you belong here, bitch.
01:29:38
Jordan
Like, like, like you got the invite too.
01:29:39
Get Defensive Sports Network
No, literally.
01:29:41
Jordan
Cause if I'm there, you there. So like, I know you're supposed to be there.
01:29:43
Get Defensive Sports Network
Period. Period. I mean, well, and that's the cool thing. So Courtney courtney Williams got the the all-star nod, as she should. She is leading in mid-range shots. Actually, i don't think that's true. I think Paige is actually leading now. But the point is, Courtney Williams has been extremely productive. This is her ninth year in the WNBA, maybe her 10th. But this is her second time as all-star.
01:30:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
Natisha Heidemann is essentially a bench player for the Minnesota Lynx, okay? So she was not going to get a all-star bid. It's just not how the Minnesota Lynx are structured. But she's not trash. She just didn't get an all-star bid. um The min Minnesota Lynx already had three people.
01:30:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
They had Nafisa Collier, Courtney, and then they also got Kayla McBride in the last minute.
01:30:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
So Natisha was not going to get all-star But that doesn't matter because Courtney was like, listen, we're going. And if I'm there, you there, we there, we going together. I don't give fuck. Like, you going to be over here right next to me.
01:30:31
Jordan
True friendship. Yeah.
01:30:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
She did every red carpet, orange carpet, whatever color the carpet. did photos with Natesha and then also did them alone because she has to as All-Star. Took Natesha with her on stage for the All-Star, for her All-Star introduction.
01:30:44
Get Defensive Sports Network
I mean, truly, like, they were like this the entire time.
01:30:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
The entire time. There was a very beautiful moment on the stream where Natesha was telling Kourtney that this was the best weekend of her life and that she was so happy that she was able to do this with her as, because they are genuinely best friends, like, in real life.
01:31:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
So there were a lot of, like, soft moments as well of, like, just seeing, like, you know, how much this really means to Natesha because she's she she was not
01:31:11
Jordan
Hey, and the teacher may be a bench player, but at All-Star Weekend, she was hooping. She was putting up shots, boy.
01:31:20
Get Defensive Sports Network
She was super shy.
01:31:20
Jordan
um telling you. see
01:31:22
Get Defensive Sports Network
That's exactly what she was doing. but to so
01:31:23
Jordan
She was trying to leave. She said, I'm from around the way. I'm leaving here with something.
01:31:27
Get Defensive Sports Network
No, literally. Well, let's walk it back for a second, right? So, WNBA All-Star just happened this past weekend. The WNBA All-Star is very similarly structured to NBA All-Star except they have a few less events, right? So, they don't have a done contest, obviously, but the NBA needs to do away with too, because niggas don't even be doing it for real.
01:31:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
Not the point. They don't have a Rising Stars game or anything like that. They just have the skills competition, the three-point competition, and then they have the game. Also, the skills competition is done singularly. They're not done as groups, like they do it for...
01:31:55
Get Defensive Sports Network
the NBA, I think they do like groups of three or something like that for the skills competition for the WNBA is straight one person passing shooting in and shooting a layup anyways. So all of those festivities started this past Friday.
01:32:08
Get Defensive Sports Network
And typically when you have a WNBA All-Star, I mean, obviously there's lots of content that's being created by the WNBA themselves, by each of the separate teams that have All-Stars there. And obviously the All-Stars themselves are creating content and whatever, but that's pretty much all you get. Like, unless you're there at All-Star, like you really don't fully kind of like,
01:32:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
get a feel for how things are and so it was just such a big deal what the stud buds were doing as far as the stream because they were showing you parts of all-star that you literally don't get to see the first night they got there this was the night before everything started so thursday night they got there they all were already there they're going out they're in the streets they're having fun they're partying courtney williams is throwing her ass on everybody
01:32:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
on everybody who was willing to catch it, and that includes Angel Reese. We would have never in our lives gotten a video of Courtney Williams twerking on Angel Reese if it was not for Stud Buds.
01:33:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
We got video evidence of Alyssa Thomas.
Caitlin Clark and WNBA Players' Personalities
01:33:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
She does actually drink. We didn't know it, but we know now because she was taking shots on the stream. And it was funny because it was becoming a running joke that Stud Buds was outing.
01:33:09
Jordan
You see Kelsey Plum taking chaser, taking crown to the head, no chaser.
01:33:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
drank the crowd. Everybody said that was the last time we saw her on the stream, too.
01:33:19
Get Defensive Sports Network
So, and then what was also funny was people's like relationships were being confirmed on StudBuds.
01:33:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like a lot of people has been confirmed that Marina Mabry and Saniya Rivers are in a romantic relationship with one another. Paige and Azee got confirmed, but they were confirming it anyways, but it also got confirmed on the stream.
01:33:35
Jordan
Yeah. That was also confirmed because they they got paid to do the celebrity girlfriend thing that they've been doing.
01:33:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
Exactly. Yeah.
01:33:42
Jordan
like How well do you know your NBA boyfriend? How well do you know?
01:33:45
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:33:45
Jordan
like They got paid to do that with it for AZ.
01:33:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
01:33:48
Jordan
They was just confirm and they was confirming in every which way. If they feel if they could confirm it, they did that weekend.
01:33:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
And the thing is, and then the thing is like AZ, it went viral like three, four weeks ago that AZ has a phone case that says Paige Beckett's girlfriend. Like they weren't trying to hide.
01:34:03
Get Defensive Sports Network
They just didn't, they just didn't say, I mean, I knew that that was, I knew that that was Paige's girlfriend when she showed up in the girlfriend outfit sitting at the table for the for the draft.
01:34:11
Jordan
Yeah, like stop playing.
01:34:11
Get Defensive Sports Network
I said, well, that's your bitch.
01:34:12
Jordan
Yeah, like that's the girlfriend.
01:34:13
Get Defensive Sports Network
I was like, that's your bitch. That's not best, that is your woman.
01:34:15
Jordan
What are you talking about? She got the first hug and everything.
01:34:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
I was like, that is your girlfriend.
01:34:18
Jordan
And the thing is, like, it's it's literally just like a thing where it's just like a respect thing, right? Where like, because like what the the difference is they just didn't answer questions where where
01:34:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:34:32
Jordan
Dallas, not not there no more. The Dallas couple that would lying us. Yeah.
01:34:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, the Dallas couple. They don't be lying. Are you talking about Dijanae Dijanae Melissa?
01:34:38
Jordan
Yes, they do. Yes. D.J. and Yes. D.J.
01:34:43
Get Defensive Sports Network
What are they lying about?
01:34:43
Jordan
and A. They said they wasn't dating in college.
01:34:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh.
01:34:47
Jordan
you a damn wife You a damn lie.
01:34:49
Get Defensive Sports Network
Because they weren't allowed to.
01:34:49
Jordan
You lie. You... I understand. Right. There's a reason that Pais and AZ was hiding it, too. It's sort of just like a respect thing that you do when you're teammates like you just don't you try not to bring drama.
01:35:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
You all do too much. Yeah, of course.
01:35:01
Jordan
A lot of a lot of especially some older coaches are homophobic.
01:35:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah.
01:35:05
Jordan
I don't know if Gino is or not, but it wouldn't surprise me because he's older.
01:35:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yeah, of course. Yeah. Kim Mulkey was, yeah.
01:35:08
Jordan
Ten is ah very open about that. But also you just don't want the distraction. So a lot of them, they don't do girlfriend things, relationship things in public until you're no longer playing together.
01:35:20
Jordan
it's just like a thing that happens in a lot of sports, right? Like it's it's just a, well, when I mean a lot of sports, there are various women's sports.
01:35:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
Well, no, it's just women's sports.
01:35:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
I know, I'm just saying.
01:35:30
Jordan
It happens in soccer. It happens in softball.
01:35:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
Just in women's sports in general, because, you know, these niggas not dating each other.
01:35:35
Get Defensive Sports Network
But yes.
01:35:35
Jordan
So, like, but, like, in the various women's sports, this happens, right? Like, you know, there are women's soccer players, like, on the U.S. s women's national team who were dating each other, and they weren't, like, holding hands and kissing at camp, at at the Olympics.
01:35:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, yeah, yeah,
01:35:49
Jordan
Like, it's sort of like an athlete we sort of respect thing. But, like, the singular second they weren't playing together, it was out there.
01:35:56
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah. They having babies.
01:35:56
Jordan
But on the Stut Buds stream, boy, if they could, if, yeah.
01:35:57
Get Defensive Sports Network
They're the building homes. They're doing all the things.
01:36:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
the The fun thing about it and the end of the day was you really, it did really feel like you got a backstage pass to the WBA All-Star. I'm a firm believer that this will not be happening next year. Don't ask me why. I just feel like it's not going to happen next year for probably a few different reasons.
01:36:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
But the other thing that came out also weekend,
01:36:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
well it's not going to be as authentic i'll say it like that they'll probably end up having it having it but the authenticity is kind of what caused it to blow up in a way i don't know how many subscribers they had when they came into this but they ended up with 67 000 by the end and when i was in the streams and i did not watch streams that is something that i find deeply boring the only streams i would watch are like people playing sims that's the old and even still i pop in and pop out like i'm not sitting and watching it all day
01:36:43
Get Defensive Sports Network
that was I watched the stream for two days straight. I started it on Saturday morning and I did not turn it off until this morning. I watched the stream, or excuse me, Friday morning, and I watched the stream for two days straight. and i I mean, they get they they announced breaking news about Unrivaled on the stream.
01:36:58
Jordan
Yeah, I mean, they had Megan Rapinoe asking about straps.
01:36:58
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like,
01:37:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
And I saw that moment in real time. was like, Megan, what? And then even Sue Berg was like, I heard y'all don't hear out of people. I said, like, it's, and even like in the interviews, a lot of the players in interviews were talking about stud bugs.
01:37:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
And they were talking about whether or not they were avoiding them or looking for the opportunity to to to be on the show.
01:37:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
And I mean, everybody was on it. Kaitlin Clark was on it for a little bit. Asia Wilson was on it for a little bit.
01:37:24
Jordan
Man, you know, yeah.
01:37:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
Lisa Leslie and the piece collier in the club. Like, ew.
01:37:28
Jordan
I hate, ah first of all, Nafisa Collier is hilarious.
01:37:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
Who's going to see that?
01:37:32
Jordan
Like, i don't know, I don't remember how old she is, but like, she calls them her boys.
01:37:33
Get Defensive Sports Network
so unintentionally hilarious. She's 27.
01:37:36
Jordan
She calls them her boys. Like, they're like, mommy's like my du my boys, which is hilarious. But then also, what was I going to say? I don't remember what going to say.
01:37:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
Kathy Engelberg was on the stream at one point. She was dancing with them to Nuck If You Look.
01:37:51
Get Defensive Sports Network
um That's insane. um but
01:37:54
Jordan
Oh, i hate what i was going to say is I hate that Caitlyn Clark and her whole thing is racist because Caitlyn Clark is, and I say this with all due respect, Caitlyn Clark is a little bit on the spectrum in a way where she's hilarious.
01:37:55
Get Defensive Sports Network
but
01:38:07
Get Defensive Sports Network
oh
01:38:07
Jordan
And if she wasn't so racist, like her content would be so
WNBA CBA Meeting Insights
01:38:12
Jordan
funny. When she was on there talking about, I watched it for three hours straight, like she's just like...
01:38:18
Jordan
just naturally in a way like the way she communicates it's funny and i just wish that i could enjoy it but fuck her but like anytime she's on camera it's
01:38:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm sorry. So, Caitlin Clark gives me like, gives me like the the annoying kid in class who always has to say something energy.
01:38:32
Jordan
because she's on the spectrum a little bit yeah she's she's she's she's yeah she's out
01:38:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, that's what she gives me. Well, but I'm saying like in a way where I'm not entertained. Like she was being annoying for me. She was being kind of annoying like they did the WNBA countdown prior to the game and obviously she's the captain.
01:38:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
of her team and she was talking about how like she wanted to get a tag and she wanted to get ejected and she's going to talk shit to the refs and she hopes that they just take it because it's fine and i was just kind of like okay girl and then like they were asking their questions and she kept interrupting the fisa whatever it was just even fee was looking like girl okay like she has the type of personality where like
01:38:57
Jordan
Yeah, and if she wasn't the other things, it would be more...
01:39:13
Jordan
Some of it's because she's on the spectrum.
01:39:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
She has no aura. That's just what it is for me. Like she just, said she does not have any aura like at all.
01:39:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
She's funny, kinda, but...
01:39:21
Jordan
and ah In a way where when she's not trying to be, it's funny.
01:39:24
Get Defensive Sports Network
Unintentionally.
01:39:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
She's very unintentionally funny.
01:39:26
Jordan
Yeah, but the rest of her is gross.
01:39:26
Get Defensive Sports Network
Um, yeah.
01:39:28
Jordan
um Anyways, yeah, so...
01:39:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
There's also, it's also going viral that she does not like her boyfriend, which I think is hilarious.
01:39:34
Get Defensive Sports Network
Which I think is hilarious.
01:39:36
Jordan
Last thing on this, because we're running super long...
01:39:37
Get Defensive Sports Network
But the other thing, yes, the other thing to come out of this, uh,
01:39:43
Get Defensive Sports Network
I'm going to do my best to keep this short. So they had a CBA meeting before, prior to all the festivities, one of the first things they did was have a CBA meeting. It was one of the highest attended CBA meetings by active players in the history of the WNBA. I think they had, they said they had to bring in more chairs for everybody to have somewhere to sit.
01:39:59
Get Defensive Sports Network
um A lot of the attitudes that came out of that meeting was that it was a waste of time, that it didn't really get anything, a lot of things accomplished. Stuart was very honest to say, like most of the time was spent during doing introductions, like they didn't even really like fully get deep into actual conversations. Nneka had made some comments about it. Angel basically said that she fully plans on getting even more involved with the player so ah Players Association because of the meeting, because of how much is really going on and how much the players really need. Because this is not just about salaries. Salaries is a very, very big part of it, but there are a lot of elements of the CBA that just need to be reworked.
01:40:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
um And so the the overarching attitude was that the league doesn't want to work with the players. They don't want to work with them. They're offering them things that are in the space of disrespectful. and And there is even a conversation about unrivaled and basically pushing unrivaled out. And um trying to be basically the only ah and and athletes unlimited. They are talking about both AU and unrivaled. And basically the WNBA kind of has this interview, like they feel like they should be the only league in America.
01:41:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
Um, and so with all that being said, the players decided that prior to the game, um, on Saturday night, they were going to wear shirts that say, pay us what you owe us. Um, shirts made by the WNBA, uh, Players Association, basically sending a message saying like, listen, we're not playing with y'all. And then after the game, during the postgame interviews, Brittany Sykes was walking around in the background with a sign that said, paid pay the players. And so, um, that has started some very ridiculous and stupid discourse about, um,
01:41:34
Get Defensive Sports Network
people want you to get paid, which I don't have a thought on that. But anyways, I just highly suggest researching what it is that these women are looking for, because one of the main things too is revenue sharing.
01:41:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
The NBA players get 50% of the revenue that the NBA gets. The WNBA players get 9.3%. And everybody wants to keep about, well, they're not, they're not, they're not profitable. They're not this, they're not that.
01:42:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
Look at the difference between profit and revenue.
01:42:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
Okay, and then also, they're making more money now.
01:42:09
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, they're making more money now. they won't be They won't be in the league that loses money for too much longer.
01:42:14
Jordan
Yeah. I mean, and yeah.
01:42:15
Get Defensive Sports Network
They're gonna the league making a lot of money. So.
01:42:17
Jordan
i don't I don't exactly know exactly exactly how it's paid out, but just in twenty in the last year, cause I don't remember when exactly was announced, a billion-dollar media rights deal was announced, and then roughly a billion dollars in expansion fees was just announced last month because it was $300,000 each team, and there was three teams.
01:42:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
and they're about to be a league
01:42:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
yeah
01:42:37
Jordan
So I don't know if that's a one-time payment or how exactly it works, but that's to Bill right there that they just...
01:42:41
Get Defensive Sports Network
That's $2 billion. dollars And the league itself is projected to be worth billions within the next couple of years, the league itself, because now we have two, not just one, two teams that are worth half a million dollars.
01:42:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
And then we're about to add all the rest of these teams. They are already building their brands. They're already building the fandom. They're already, the ticket sales are through the roof. This Jersey sales are through the roof. These women are not getting dime for their Jersey sales, their Jersey sales.
01:43:04
Jordan
de And yeah and i don't want to comment on this because we're going be talking about this later. like To be honest, there's no new information that came out from this. And so like I know we are eventually going to get information.
01:43:14
Get Defensive Sports Network
no
01:43:16
Jordan
i want to talk about it. And we're running long.
01:43:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
Correct.
01:43:18
Jordan
So I don't have a lot of things to say about this.
01:43:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
Mm-hmm.
01:43:20
Jordan
But the one thing that I will say is it's easier now to like, it's not going to be easier to get revenue share when they are profitable because they're going to want that money. They're going to see that money and then they're really going to be losing it.
01:43:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
right
01:43:31
Jordan
You work on these things now. And the last thing I want to say is i unless I'm wrong and I don't think i am, they're not asking for 50%. Like there's, there's so much of this, like,
01:43:42
Jordan
misunderstanding when we compare them to the NBA.
01:43:45
Jordan
And it's like, they're asking for, they're seeing this and they're saying, we want a similar structure, not we want their money.
01:43:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
They want to be paid as much as the NBA players.
01:43:47
Get Defensive Sports Network
No, they don't.
01:43:55
Jordan
They're not asking for a $300 million dollars contract. Maybe that happens in 10, 20, 30 years, but like, they're not asking for that. They're just asking to be closer to that because that is a model that exists in a professional sport that is the same as theirs. The only difference is one is men and one is women.
01:44:11
Jordan
So That's all I'm going to say about this because otherwise going to be here forever. Pay them what you owe them. If you don't want them to be paid, something's very, yeah.
01:44:21
Get Defensive Sports Network
you're misogynistic and weird and you can turn your TV off because we don't fucking need you or your viewership if you don't believe these people need to be paid. This is ridiculous because this is conversation. Somebody has tweeted this and I'm going to stick with it.
01:44:31
Get Defensive Sports Network
They said you There should not really be too much discourse being had with people who don't believe women should be playing sports in the first place. And there's a lot of people who are trying to enter into this discourse and their wannabe economists who just genuinely believe that women shouldn't even be playing sports, let alone getting paid to do so.
01:44:48
Get Defensive Sports Network
So I'm not having fucking conversations with you idiots.
01:44:50
Get Defensive Sports Network
At the end of the day, they arere making more they stand to make more money. If the league itself stands to make more money, then the players stand to make more money as well. That is how that goes.
01:44:58
Get Defensive Sports Network
Because who the fuck is watching? Nobody's watching Kathy Engelberg.
01:45:01
Get Defensive Sports Network
We're watching the players play the game.
01:45:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
So if they're not, they're the product. They're what's important.
01:45:05
Get Defensive Sports Network
They're what's drawing people to the league. They deserve to be paid as such. And they've been deserving of it this entire time. But you damn sure think that they're not going to ask for it now when they've quite literally quadrupled quadrupled their values in the last year, in the last two years.
01:45:17
Jordan
In the last couple of years, yeah.
01:45:20
Get Defensive Sports Network
You must be out your fucking mind if you think they're not going to ask for their fair share.
01:45:22
Jordan
a Especially because they've, yeah. And the last thing that I got to say about it is, do you know how lame you sound counting the WNBA's pockets?
01:45:25
Get Defensive Sports Network
And yeah.
01:45:31
Jordan
Like, you know how lame sound? Well, they're not technically, they're not profitable.
01:45:32
Get Defensive Sports Network
Do you know how much energy is required to do that?
01:45:35
Jordan
Like, I mean, why if you look at their their most recent tax statements, their return on investment, like, shut up. Nobody cares about that.
01:45:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like, shut up. And also, again, none of y'all are economists.
01:45:46
Get Defensive Sports Network
None of y'all are.
01:45:47
Jordan
And also, you only bring that up most of the time when you when you get into detail like that, you bring that up to conceal hate. You know what I'm saying?
01:45:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
You bring it up as a reason to not pay these people, and that's crazy.
01:45:54
Jordan
like You bring that up, like... Yeah. like you like you no you're not but You're not worried about that at any other time. You're not looking at that.
01:46:02
Get Defensive Sports Network
Like Apple wasn't profitable initially either.
01:46:04
Get Defensive Sports Network
They still had to pay the people who was putting the microchips in the cell phones. Shut up. Shut up because you sound stupid.
01:46:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
How many businesses were profitable and had all these crazy revenue streams so within their first while they were building? They didn't. But guess the fuck what?
01:46:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
Nobody was showing up at the places working for free. Nobody was showing up with this place is working for less than what they deserve. So what are you talking about? You're not talking about nothing for real. You're just talking. So shut up.
01:46:30
Get Defensive Sports Network
Thank you so much. Somebody was like, yeah, I don't see why the players are doing all of this. This is really up to the Players Association. What do you think WNBA PA stands for?
01:46:39
Jordan
Well, to our last two minute report, because this is about to get real disrespectful. arm
01:46:44
Get Defensive Sports Network
but Shut up, please.
01:46:45
Jordan
speaking of Speaking of players associations, I was going to do something fun, and then I saw something else that I had to talk about.
NFLPA Leadership Controversies
01:46:52
Jordan
um the the two the So the president of the NFLPA stepped down, and then the current NFLPA so chief strategy officer, who was a previous previous president, stepped down.
01:46:58
Get Defensive Sports Network
Oh, yes, I saw this.
01:47:05
Jordan
And it's basically the core of it is that they were hiding things. They were agreeing with the NFL. to like hide things. So one of them, let's see, let's see, the Lloyd Howe resigned as executive director on Thursday after weeks of negative headlines surrounding his leadership, including reports um that the findings including reports by ESPN.
01:47:29
Jordan
The findings included the NFLPA reportedly agreeing to a confidentiality agreement with the NFL to hide information about its arbitration decisions. which is not good, as well as concerns about potential conflict of interest because someone that Howe worked with outside of this was trying to become an NFL owner.

You're on the side of the players, want to become an NFL owner. um And then there's also other things. Like on July 17th, a second arbitration ruling came to light.
01:47:59
Jordan
This one involving a grievance won by the NFL against NFLPA over fake injuries, the original grievance into the 2023 stemmed from a comment made by Treader, a former union president who suggested players could fake injuries as a contract negotiation tactic.
01:48:16
Get Defensive Sports Network
um Um, what?
01:48:17
Jordan
So basically they were bad at their jobs. They were hiding things from the players and they were and in sort of a way doing the NFL bidding. I don't care about none of that.
01:48:28
Jordan
All of that is bad. I'm sorry. I know that I'd be doing stupid things. Lloyd Howe, one of the things that got him fired, he was making $4 million. dollars One of the things that got him fired is he went and took two people to Magic City, a strip club in Atlanta, and he charged his expenses on the on the account of the NFLPA.
01:48:54
Jordan
Okay? Here's my issue with this. He charged $2,700. $2,700.
01:49:03
Jordan
He made $4 million. He charged $2,700 for three people at Magic City. All you gave them was $2,700? You using someone else's money? I know this is the wrong lesson, but you're using someone else's money and you stocked at $2,700 for three people?
01:49:21
Jordan
You wasn't even in there making it rain. like You were just in there being stingy. And you make $4 million. dollars You could have paid $2,700 by himself. If you're going to be fired...
01:49:32
Jordan
For using the company money at a strip club, you should be spending bands. you got You lost a $4 million dollars job because you wanted to be stingy in a strip club.
01:49:43
Get Defensive Sports Network
Yes.
01:49:44
Jordan
That's insane me. I'm sorry.
01:49:45
Jordan
i if if If it wasn't my money, I'm not, and it's three people. I'm not, and I understand some people are like $2,700. That's a lot of money. understand that this is ah a dumb rant, but you make $4 million.
01:49:45

and On the serious as ill.

dollars You're using a company card at a strip club and you spent $2,700.
01:50:03
Jordan
I went to magic for my, for my bachelor's party. I spent more than 2,700. It cost more than $2,700 to get the section. And then I took spending money. You make $4 million. You lost your job by being stingy.
01:50:19

Get Defensive Sports Network
i'm screaming at this um i hate that i have to end the show on this note but i also feel like it is very important that i put this on my platform um because there's some weird shit going on but i found out this morning that somebody has been taking my content from my
Content Theft on TikTok
01:50:42
Get Defensive Sports Network
TikTok page and using it for engagement farming. And their follower count is growing by the minute actually. um They are going viral with my content.
01:50:54
Get Defensive Sports Network
um It's unfortunate because it's content that I made years ago, but basically to give you guys some context, I worked at Crumble Cookie for like, I don't even know, maybe like six months of my life, not a very, very long time.
01:51:06
Get Defensive Sports Network
And I started making vlogs and posting them on TikTok because I noticed that there is a, there was a gap in content about working at Crumble. I found out later it's because Crumble employees are not allowed to make content.
01:51:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
Um, and so I was one of the only people who actually posted about it because it's, it's, it was a code of conduct thing that I was not aware of at the time. Once I found out it was not, not, you couldn't do it, then I, then I stopped doing it.
01:51:29
Get Defensive Sports Network
But, um, this person went deep into my archives on my TikTok page and downloaded my vlogs from working at crumble and have been posting small like four to six second clips from the vlogs and claiming that they worked at crumble for four years and that they are being deported by ice and they have this long ass cockamamie story about how they are being deported and that this is this is happening to them. They're getting sent back to Mexico. It's all sc Crumble's fault and that they have this tea on Crumble that they're going to drop online.
01:52:00
Get Defensive Sports Network
A lot of people have been in their comments asking them to do a story time. I can't wait to see how they do that because they're using my videos in my face.
01:52:10
Get Defensive Sports Network
So I would just love... if this account could be reported because TikTok has also claimed that that account is not doing anything wrong, even though it's very obvious that they are using my content.
01:52:23
Get Defensive Sports Network
And so now I have to go to battle with TikTok about this. but They have a video that has reached a million views and if you guys know anything about what monetizing on TikTok means, that means that they're at a point where they will probably be able to cut a check using my name, image, and likeness. Oh my gosh, wow. Not my name, but my image and my likeness.
01:52:40
Get Defensive Sports Network
um So yeah, I'm just a little pissed off because if somebody gets cut a check using my content, that's go be a problem.
01:52:51
Jordan
Yep, I hate that that's happening for you.
01:52:52
Get Defensive Sports Network
So.
01:52:54
Jordan
um i have, I spam on all the videos. I reported all the videos. So hopefully TikTok does its job.

And I had somebody just now while we were on the show DM me on Instagram, someone who I have not spoken to, and I don't know how long saying, Hey, there's an account that's pretending to be you. Like they're going so viral. They're hitting the for you pages of people who I haven't spoken to in years.
01:53:18
Get Defensive Sports Network
They are going that viral because they posted it yesterday or two days ago. And like I said, it already has a million views and it's a lie about being sent back to Mexico. And I'm so sorry. I'm not even trying to be funny.
01:53:36
Get Defensive Sports Network
i look like I could be an immigrant, but a Mexican one? Like, that don't even seem believable. Like, you could have at least picked like a country that would be believable that I would be from.
01:53:46
Jordan
Yeah, that's insane.

It's only been three hours. Like, this person is building a following off of my comment.

I don't even have that many followers on TikTok.
01:54:10
Jordan
Yeah, they're probably fake numbers as well. But the moral of the story is don't steal people's content.
