Introduction and Hosts' Excitement
00:00:01
Speaker
On another exciting episode of the Animation Deliberation podcast, who are we in for a treat as we get this bloody good episode of Jujutsu Kaisen, Season 2, Episode 13, Red Scale. Right after these ads, we have no control over. Sing along if you know the words. One, two, three, it's time for animation deliberation. A conversation and a celebration of a fair action animated series, yeah.
Hosts' Introduction and Podcast Tone
00:00:28
Speaker
Yeah, welcome back to another episode of Animation Deliberation, the podcast where we take action animation and cartoons seriously, but not too seriously. We're your hosts, I'm Zuhara Lee. And I am Andrew Rogers. And there's a lot of celebrating going on today as we have gotten what I think is arguably the best episode this season.
Episode Praise and Highlights
00:00:44
Speaker
It had the action, it had the animation, it had story, it had pacing, oh my god, was like geeking, I was so happy. How did you feel about this episode?
00:00:53
Speaker
It was great like just take it in a vacuum. It is such a good episode. We don't care about what came before it. We don't care about what comes after it. They just did a good job of serving us up this nice little meal that works so well and is like a big part of what this series what these animators get credit for is just like this episode in a nutshell.
00:01:14
Speaker
show it to them, show it to anyone who like, hey, what's this whole J.J.K. thing about? I feel like this episode could be like a poster child for a lot of the great things that people expect out of J.J.K. Yeah. Yeah, it's very, very well done. I was on three, two, three, three Murphy and they were like, oh, what are you talking about on Animation Liberation? And I was like, I don't know how I'm going to get you guys to watch the show, but I think sending a clip from this episode might just do it.
00:01:43
Speaker
And yeah, yeah, I just I think that's a fair statement.
Discussion on Episode Explanations and Dubbing
00:01:47
Speaker
I'll get my my gripe out of the way because it's not spoiler in any sense, but it's like our biggest complaint is the lack of explanations. They're doing a good job with that narrator, but I cannot wait for the dubs to come out because I do not have the attention span to be admiring all this beautiful animation and reading subtitles at the same time. It's not working for me.
00:02:09
Speaker
That's fair. The cognitive effort that goes into watching an episode of the show is extraordinarily high at all times. There's a reason I struggle to read books like I smell. Yeah, this is definitely one of those that I'm like, I would not mind a rewatch because I feel like there's definitely some portion of the explanation or something that I missed, not even including the obviously confusing portions of the episode because
00:02:37
Speaker
I feel like it's going to be an interesting conversation this week because I think I was lost on some parts, but I think that's intentional. So it was great with what we got. I will say that much. You ready to get hydrated and talk about it? I am because I got to tell you it is hot here. It does not feel like it is October the 19th at the time of the recording of this.
00:03:00
Speaker
I'm like, oh, we're getting ready for Halloween, time to get some costumes together, fall things, pumpkin patches.
Ad Read: Liquid IV
00:03:06
Speaker
It is 95 degrees in Pasadena right now. Like, yeah, no, it is, my AC hasn't been on for like two weeks. I finally broke today and I'm running it as we speak because it is hot. So whether you're in the SoCal area or not, it is, it's still pretty warm going into the last half of this year. So why don't you just keep yourself hydrated with some liquid IV?
00:03:30
Speaker
Yeah, and to tell you more about liquid IV, one stick of liquid IV in 16 ounces of water hydrates you two times faster and more efficiently than water alone. And apparently we have to clarify now that this is a powder that comes in a scrapper that we call a stick.
00:03:45
Speaker
So it's not cinnamon sticks, you get powder, you mix it up, tastes delicious. The result of an extensive R&D process to perfect the flavor and efficacy, Liquid Ivy combined Sciencebag's zero sugar technology with the brand's commitment to delicious real flavor. No artificial sweeteners and zero sugar with the proprietary amino acid alulose blend for a sweet taste without the calories or raised blood glucose levels you get from sugar. Contains eight vitamins and nutrients for everyday wellness with three times the electrolytes and leading sports drinks.
00:04:15
Speaker
Like I said, it's going to be great for hydration if you are in a place where it is hot out right now. But also if you are in a place where it's getting a little bit colder, it is getting into cold and flu season. I'm vaccinating myself up. I'm getting ready to wear a mask again because I'm about to take off on a trip to Japan and I do not want anything to miss that. And a big part of my routine has been making sure that I have
00:04:34
Speaker
fluids, electrolytes, vitamin C. Liquid IV is just a great way to get that. As Zuhair said, with all of the plethora of electrolytes, vitamins, nutrients, as well as being non-GMO and free from gluten, dairy, and soy, Liquid IV believes that equitable access to clean and abundant water is the foundation of a healthier world. They partner with leading organizations to fund and foster innovative solutions that help communities protect both their water and their futures.

00:05:25
Speaker
I really had a brain blast as you're talking about that we needed to clarify that it's not a stick. Liquid IV make actual stick ones that you could just like have a bag, like a pouch of the like cinnamon stick liquid IVs that you throw in. And then you, if you throw it in your blend jet and then press that button and then it like whirls up and gives it to you as a nice slosh. I feel like that could be a way to minimize your packaging. It would be very on brand for liquid. Wouldn't it break the blend jet?
00:05:54
Speaker
I mean, it's a soft, like it's basically just- The whole stick doesn't dissolve itself. You have to compress the powder into a stick and then that stick can break it. Like a candy cigarette. I think that involves more ingredients and materials we don't want in our foods. Possibly. There could be that. Cigarette's probably not. I mean, candy cigarette. Not bad, but saying the word cigarette really- It's like there's more gelatin, sucrose stuff you have to put in there to get it to stick, don't you? Possibly.
00:06:25
Speaker
Have you ever chewed on cinnamon sticks? I've never chewed on a cinnamon stick. This is a wild turn, but we're taking it. I used to do that a lot back in the day, cinnamon sticks and sugar canes. You just chew on the cinnamon stick and it just tastes like cinnamon? You just suck on it a little bit. You just chew on it like you're just fidgeting. More or less cinnamony than a cinnamon Altoid or cinnamon gum? Less.
00:06:51
Speaker
Okay, interesting because those are like intense cinnamon you get more of the barkiness because you don't like bite it off, right? Like you're just it's literally like a dog chewing on a bone like you're just like gnawing on it I feel like I need to go out of my way to like get a cinnamon stick now and like Try it's like when you're when you're bored, you can just kind of like blow in it because that's like all the inside
00:07:16
Speaker
the way you're talking about it being hollow. Now I'm like, could you use it as like a straw? Like, yeah, drink some milk with a cinnamon stick. And then you just have cinnamon milk. Yeah, it's probably a new poor man cinnamon toast crunch. I can't afford to sit up and test. My milk cinnamon stick.
00:07:35
Speaker
Dude, you're in LA, you can get away with weird shit like that. Yeah, you can probably get away with a lot. You're walking around on the street, you're working on an electric scooter, just drinking milk out of a cinnamon stick. I just write up Hollywood Boulevard, you know, that's my life here, apparently, at this point.
00:07:56
Speaker
He talks about people walking their pigs out there like What we I mean, I can't say anything because I drive down the street and there are peacocks all the time because like that's a thing we just have wild peacocks here and wild parrots, so I Guess we are just in a weird place Yeah, I've been to Pasadena, but I haven't quite explored LA yet, but we have what two months until I do that Yeah, that'll know exactly two months until I do that. Oh
00:08:24
Speaker
Do that. Maybe watch Boy in the Heron. See how that goes. Maybe that's happening. Like that's part of my plans. There we go. We're going to do that. We're watching that and possibly recording on it. That would be wild. That might be our first video podcast that has to be posted. It's like us sitting across from each other talking about Boy in the Heron. But we are here to record about Jujutsu Kaisen.
Yuji vs Chozo Fight Analysis
00:08:47
Speaker
This was an incredible episode. What? No way.
00:08:52
Speaker
with uh i can't say without further ado with much further ado get a do get a do closer ado mountain do not code red but jujutsu kaisen red scale
00:09:08
Speaker
Before his encounter with Chozo, Yuji passed by civilians being attacked by cursed spirits in the streets, until Toge Unumaki arrived to handle it. Chozo attacks using his cursed technique blood manipulation convergence, piercing Yuji's skin and catching him off guard. Chozo asks Yuji for his brother's last words, where he reveals to him that they cried before dying.
00:09:29
Speaker
Yuji finds himself struggling to overcome Chozo's defense and attacks until Mechamaru reawakens, advising Yuji of a plan. They lure Chozo into the bathroom, in which Yuji has flooded it. And while the Mechamaru robot is destroyed, the water disrupts Chozo's outer blood, preventing him from going to his fullest.
00:09:49
Speaker
Despite this, Choso manages to pierce Yuji's lung, and believing he will die anyway, goes all out with the intent of taking Choso down too. However, Choso uses his blood to form a shield to protect his chest from Yuji's divergent fist, and knocks him unconscious. Choso is about to finish him off to Sukunu's disappointment. When suddenly, something happens.
00:10:12
Speaker
Flashes of memories begin to flood Joseph's mind of he and his brothers hanging out, including Yuji. The supposed revelation causes him to spiral in disbelief and wander away. Later, the Hasaba sisters discover the unconscious Yuji.
00:10:28
Speaker
First up, it was his liver, not his lungs. I was just about to say, I'm like, I'm pretty sure that's a typo because we don't write these up. We do not have time for that copy. This makes more sense to be like a critical thing. Like liver is bad, but how he fought as long as he did because it was his liver, not as long. It would have been more of an issue if it was his lung.
00:10:51
Speaker
I want to talk about how incredible the animation was. I want to talk about how incredible those fight sequences were, even, even if it went to Naruto animation styles that you hate so much. I want to talk about how amazing it was that we got first point, first person, but I want to talk about something that's going to be overlooked. And I think the big, I think the gut wrenching thing of the Shibuya incident is,
00:11:21
Speaker
how many innocent people are getting hurt during all this. And I don't think they've done a good job of conveying how intensive a situation it's supposed to be. At first, it was like they're killing people in front of Gojo. And he was just like, I whatever. And then last week, they started touching on a little more, but it was almost like
00:11:46
Speaker
It was almost like a nuisance to our characters, like, we're talking about this, oh man, these people are getting away, let's just, you know, deal with these. I think the opening of this episode is the first time that they really showed the full scale of just how bad this situation is. Yeah. And they need to do more of that because I'm sure that there's other things that's happened in the manga that are supposed to be like, no, this is why it's gut-wrenching stuff, but it's like,
00:12:12
Speaker
The whole purpose of this being a big deal is that innocent people are getting hurt. And I don't think that they've done a good job conveying that. And this episode was a better taste of what's going on in this world that's making it such a big deal. Like our main characters had a motion towards it. And yeah, I think they need to follow like how important all of this is.
00:12:38
Speaker
for sure. Instead of a yes and I'm going to kind of give you a yes but which I feel like just needs to be my catchphrase at this point. I agree that this this episode I think did it best of all of kind of showing the horror around and we know especially it hit hard because Yuji has this distaste for all of the like creatures that have been created and like huge you know loss of life. But
00:13:07
Speaker
I do think there was a lot of impact with the Gojo scenes. I feel like we talked at length about how many humans were dying during that Gojo fight. And we touched on it a little yesterday, or not yesterday, last week, that Nanami specifically seems to very much care about loss of human life and trying to limit it.
00:13:27
Speaker
But I agree there could be more and I wouldn't be surprised if it's just we don't have time for more and it's going to be either at the end of the season or the start of next season. We're going to get this.
00:13:41
Speaker
It might even be a newscast of like, hey, here's what the death toll is of this mysterious incident. Or it's going to be Gojo looking at what he couldn't stop because he let it get this far. Or even Yuji coming out being like, could I have done more? I think that's coming because I think it's just we don't have time to totally go over what exactly the human casualties look like.
00:14:08
Speaker
because we're dealing so much with possibly main character casualties. We've seen a lot of close calls already this season. Yeah. I'll be okay with that when it happens. But I'm not you. I'm not gonna let time be the excuse because even the JJK zero movie, like, emotionally, even just like in a little bit of dialogue,
00:14:31
Speaker
they put enough of like, we have to protect these people. There's gonna be all this stuff going on. We have reinforcements. We saw like sorcerers die at the hands of curses. We saw them have to protect people. We saw there was like an urgency of evacuation and they've touched on it. But I think the, like we've talked about it, sure. We've seen it, sure. But there was a level of emotional resonance just off of like Yuji's face.
00:14:58
Speaker
I think they did more in that three seconds than they've done in the last three episodes.
00:15:04
Speaker
Yes, totally. So it's just all down to a direction thing. It's like if you only have a couple of cycles to spend on it, this is how you do it. Yeah, like credit to them for that. And I loved seeing Inumaki show back up. Yeah, this is my boy. Like whatever the line was from Yuji was so good. Like, wait, I know that dialect. And it was like, wait, he said like Ro or something. What do you mean? Oh, oh, OK. That that makes more sense.
00:15:32
Speaker
That's another one someone who like loves the dub if I just heard salmon I would have been I'm like reading the subtitles and I was like, what are you talking about? Yeah, it had that cognitive moment to do it but then I I was concerned too because he pulled up the megaphone and I know it's such a delicate thing of like whatever he like he has to word things right I was like, what are you gonna say that? Yeah, all these humans can hear and the curses here stop moving. I'm just like, oh my god
00:16:00
Speaker
Why do I question you? Yeah, because I was like, if he says crush, everyone's gonna be crushed. Yeah, I mean, you can't just like say something. So that was great. I am also just sitting here like a little Hello, Megan, why did it take so long to get a megaphone to him? Like, why has this not been this whole thing to save his voice instead of needing to shout and use the breath spray, he could just whisper and have it come through a megaphone. Because that is a curse tool that requires energy as well. Because we hear
00:16:28
Speaker
the other guy used it in the movie. It requires energy, but would it require the same physical exertion that it does on his throat? I don't know. I think that's the only like, it tires out his body instead of just his throat type of thing. That's true, because he only has so much cursed energy.
00:16:51
Speaker
to use. But we've seen the megaphone before, which is why I thought it was a cool like callback. That's true. I forgot. But still so much fun. Okay, but I got my gripes out of the way. I mean, yeah, I don't have any gripes. I just got to say like looking at this block of text that I have on my screen in front of me, it is
00:17:12
Speaker
I would say almost half the length of our usual synopsis, which tells you how much action actually happened in this episode. We were in one location and Zuhair started singing the praises and I'm just going to continue.
00:17:27
Speaker
this was a proper fight scene. Through and through they did so many things right between the explanation of powers not being so in-depth that
Animation Style and Cinematic Comparisons
00:17:36
Speaker
I was getting bored to just absolute fluidity and like back-to-back snappy motions and flinging things around and camerawork of the gods at this point. Like it was
00:17:51
Speaker
it was top tier. I don't want to just throw out like best fight scene that we've seen in this show, because I have not had enough time to mull over the other fight scenes that we've seen. But it's gotta be up there. There was just so much with Yuji and Toto versus that other special grade, the tree special grade. Yeah, they were clapping and switching spots. Oh,
00:18:13
Speaker
Oh yeah, okay, I think the clapping might have to beat this for sure. Just because the clapping was so good. And that's why I was like, I haven't had time to mull it over, but even still, the magnetism, or not the magnetism, the magnitude of every punch that was being thrown, every kick, every flying motion, you've felt it so well. They did a great job with the direction, not just the animation of like following every action line.
00:18:42
Speaker
So every time they went to that first person view, I was like, there's no way they can do it again. Keep doing it. I think my favorite one was when he went into the stall, grabbed onto the handicap handle and you saw him like spin through the stalls and come out and then kick chose. Oh, that just all was giving like,
00:19:05
Speaker
old school Jackie Chan movie of use your environment to fight vibes. And I would argue some of those are some of my favorite like kung fu movie fight scenes is when you have to do that. So, so raw, so cool. And first person, like, give us an episode, give us something from a first person perspective now that you've proven this concept is as cool as it is, like, really give us a little short or something that does this because like,
00:19:36
Speaker
it deserves so much credit because that cannot be easy to properly, like how do you understand that as an animator? There's so much work that has to go into suddenly doing it from a first person perspective as opposed to like, you can hide some crimes when it comes to that third person styling and we see it all the time without realizing where they foreshorten things and they change it, whereas it felt real to be at that first person, nothing felt off about it. And that's amazing.
00:20:03
Speaker
I think another cool one was when he was when he was dodging the blood as it was like flying at him. And it was it was so seamless and like how it was just like we're locked into this fight sequence going on. And then they just go to that for a couple seconds and then go back to what was happening. I'm just like. And then one of the things that I was that I mentioned earlier was the comparison to Naruto. Where when a heavy action sequence happens in Naruto, it
00:20:33
Speaker
they kind of like, they, they take out shading and replace it with like, fluid movements, right? So there was a couple parts in the bathroom where it's just like, all right, just, you know, screw all of the shadows, we're, we're gonna do this right now. And then it was just like,
00:20:50
Speaker
Oh my god, like the JKD style of fighting and the stances and the clearing and trapping and it's like to be able to sit there and like actually understand the movements that were going on just kind of like who can I call in class next week and like try to replicate this because oh my god it was so fast-paced and fun but it's like like if you know a bit of martial arts you can actually understand and break down like what's happening so the fact that they put like that much oh man it was just
00:21:14
Speaker
Oh, I just can't get over how incredible that was. Honestly, if you could make that happen, that would be amazing because I feel like my social media feed has just been full of Jujutsu Kaisen, obviously. But I have seen more like life comparisons out of this season where it's people
00:21:34
Speaker
like dressing as the characters and matching the manga to themselves, to the anime, or people like taking pictures in Shibuya Station that look like the actual scenes. So if you were to pull out- I saw the Attack on Titan version of that this week, too. Oh, the Attack on Titan. Attack on Titan version is a little harder, but the Shibuya Station one is wild. Yeah. Because it is like, I'm going to walk around Shibuya Station like, oh my God, I'm here. I don't like this. This is uncomfy.
00:22:02
Speaker
But yeah, if you could recreate a fight scene, that would be amazing because like, I'm just thinking about the moment where the water was filling the floor and their feet were just slowly getting into position. Like, the tension and the buildup that that just the whole, whole bathroom scene, whole bathroom scene.
Mecha Maru's Role and Strategic Elements
00:22:20
Speaker
Amazing. As soon as I got to give myself the credit, as soon as Mecha Mari was like going to the bathroom, I was like, sprinklish. It's got to be water. You got to let them out or something like that was immediately where my brain went.
00:22:31
Speaker
But if it weren't for Makamaru, I was just like, how is this fight going to go? Because the bathrooms weren't an option at that time. Yeah, that's all I needed out of the explanation, too. It's like, water dilutes blood, steam expands. OK, say no more. Keep going. Yeah, they went a little hard into it. And from my rudimentary knowledge of the science of the body, I can check that it tracks. But yeah, they made it simple enough that you didn't need to go hardcore into it.
00:23:00
Speaker
but all of the blood attacks. So, so cool. The piercing, like following that stream across when he first got pierced through the arm. Oh my God, it was visceral. The peeling it off of Yuji? Yes, but it would like magnetize back. His supernova technique was really close too. When he got in close range, you got a cock, you just pop, pop, pop. I was like, whoa. That was one of the classic
00:23:27
Speaker
JJK anime, we're going to replay this like three times and it's always an exciting scene when they replay. That's typical Indian Korean drama moment out there. It's like how many times can we replay the slap? But it's actually cool and not people's dumb faces for 30 seconds. Yes. Yes. It is very cool. Not stand that about Indian dramas.
00:23:50
Speaker
But the fact that the blood was breaking the speed of sound, can we talk about the attacks being that powerful that you would essentially have a thunderclap every time it's hitting you? That explains his hand stance because it's like the result of a clap. Yes, I mean, small funnel creates high pressure. So he's probably just pinching his fingers together. That's
00:24:15
Speaker
That was a hand fart that Zuher did on command, ladies and gentlemen. I was not prepared for that to be the way as I was staring at my own fingers as I was like trying to do the finger together and like press them really hard to make pressure. Not that blood's gonna come shooting out, but like, that's funny doing a pool. It's true.
00:24:39
Speaker
But yeah, just all of the blood techniques, the like cutting blades, and it just, without Mecha Mario, I hate to think how this fight actually would have gone, because it was like, at a close range, good at long range, good at medium range. What are you going to do? He's missing a chunk of his shoulder and his left arm is kind of like... Yeah, he's already worse for wear. I mean, yeah, sure, like death could be a lot worse, but like he's not doing too hot.
00:25:07
Speaker
Yeah, that that might have to be my one gripe with the episode. And I don't know how they fix this. I think it's just a show. Didn't feel like death was ever on the table. Like as much as I watched
00:25:25
Speaker
Yuji get closer and closer. I was like, well, is Sukuna just going to take over? Like, is that just the next step? Like, are we repeating episode four of season one right now? I think it was a little later than that. But, you know, you would be if you do a rewatch, you'd be surprised how quickly things happen. It was literally. Dang. Itadori meets Gojo in episode one and two, and then they go on a mission on three and then he's dead by like three or four.
00:25:54
Speaker
Wow, I mean that does track because I can't think of anything else that would happen in between. But yeah, that's kind of that's why I'm like I don't know how they fix it because Sukuna is always going to be a ever looming figure that could like return and do exactly that. So
00:26:12
Speaker
Yeah. Also, it's another thing I'm so used to. Sukana's job, where when his voice kicked in and Japanese for me for the first time, I was like, really? Oh, you haven't heard that. Nope. First time. OK, well, his his his line was interesting. He opened his eyes back up. He was like, interesting. I was like, what's interfering right now? Because it's not the girls.
00:26:37
Speaker
Like what's causing Shouso's dream? What's saving Itadori right now? What has Sukuna so intrigued right now that he's not worried about his vessel? Yeah, I don't know. And that's the big thing that I wanted to talk about is like, what was the confusion? Like, what caused that? Was it Sukuna, like,
00:27:06
Speaker
there didn't seem to be any sort of clear explanation. And even the synopsis really did a like rough job of just being like something happened. So I don't think we're supposed to have the full run to the picture. But I was rather rather confused by that, to say the least. Because it was very low key. I'm I didn't even do anything. Why is this thumbs up thing keep popping up?
00:27:33
Speaker
I'm doing has gestures installed on his computer now, ladies and gentlemen, and every time he gives a thumbs up, I get a little fun emoji and it keeps happening despite him not doing a thumbs up. Yeah, it's like I just like lift up my arm and then thumbs up. He's popping up. I don't look like I know you didn't call it a gripe. It's not as much of a gripe as now I'm looking at it because Jujutsu Kaisen is like raising like my standard for them again. I don't want to get too excited, but it is raising the standard just a little bit. I have hopes again.
00:28:03
Speaker
I'm looking at it as this was a good cliffhanger setting, but as a viewer that was enjoying this action, I was mad that that was a cliffhanger. So it was of no fault of theirs. It was just me wanting more. That was a big thing to not have any inkling of this is what you should be expecting next week. Yeah, there's good cliffhangers and bad cliffhangers.
00:28:30
Speaker
And it's a very fine line because you want your viewers to be wondering you want them to be asking for more, but you don't want them to be upset that they don't have the information again. And I don't feel like it's quite there yet that it's like oh I don't have the information because it would be like
00:28:49
Speaker
if they continued to propose questions without answers. Whereas I feel like this is really the only big question we have on the table right this moment. So I'm not like super upset because we don't have all the information. It's like, oh, there's this one instance, pretty confident it's going to come back up soon. It's not going to be, you know, seasons and seasons of information.
00:29:11
Speaker
And the little next time on isn't too giving either. I don't even pay attention to it too much. I think at one point I looked up and I saw Mei Mei there, so we might be switching back and forth between stories again next week, but... Yeah, I'm more intrigued than anything. Yes, well, I mean, did you get the... I mean, you saw the post-credits scene as well?
00:29:37
Speaker
Yeah. Okay. Just making sure because I'm saying like, I don't think it was the girls that did anything, right? No, I don't feel like I think they're finding him after somebody else intervened. Yeah. And I want to know, like, who, what, how? Because there was like a little swirl of blood. Yeah. Why is Gamora? Yeah, it was. It's interesting, but not in a satisfying way, I guess. Because we don't like
00:30:06
Speaker
Maybe if we had known a character with this power, it'd be like, oh, maybe that's what's happening. But I'm also like, are they actually brothers? Like, the fact that I'm questioning what the flashback means, like, was there symbolism in there? Is it more of those things in the jars that were stolen from Choo Choo Too High that are causing problems? Did he just go mad from using the blood outside his body? Like, there's so many options.
00:30:29
Speaker
but none of them fit. And I think that's part of what it like, why it's still a good cliffhanger, but it feels unsatisfying is because I have no semblance of an idea of where it's about to go. Yeah, it generally makes me want next week to be here, even though I'll probably be watching the episode on a plane. Yeah, I'm gonna go back to you being like, Oh, that's what Sukuna's voice actor sounds like. This man is known
00:30:57
Speaker
throughout the anime community for just having just a voice that people adore. Because also, this Japanese voice actor is Aizawa in My Hero Academia. One of the main characters, Akira in Food Wars. He is Leon in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and was Kayo-gai, the drum demon in Demon Slayer.
00:31:23
Speaker
Next, he just has this, like, very boisterous presence of a voice. I'm also trying to look it up because I do feel like he plays one of my other favorite characters, but I don't want to say it, so I'll let you go while I do a little bit of googling. Well, I'm just thinking, like, there's gotta be somebody else that you can, like...
00:31:46
Speaker
appeal to me. Oh, he's Yami. I was making sure that he was Yami, because like, his Yami voice is this, like, one of the best voices that he does. I absolutely love what he does with Yami in the Japanese version. Yeah, when I saw the movie, that was the first time I heard him as Yami. And I really, yes, a lot of people, but a lot of people do very much like the appeal, for lack of a better word that his voice offers for Sukuna.
00:32:15
Speaker
Sure, I didn't hear it. I was like, Oh, this is bad. Just like just used to have an attachment to it is different because I did watch a little bit of the
00:32:28
Speaker
I did watch a little bit of this in English when I watched the first season, the dub. Gosh, you couldn't think of that word. So yeah, I do know there is definitely a difference between these characters and the way that they're not portrayed, but like the way that they sound. But I don't think we've gotten to hear enough of him in the Japanese to like really say much. So I think hopefully there's more coming. But yeah, very surprised that this is the first we've seen of him in this entire season. Yeah, because it took so long just to get to Yuji himself.
00:32:59
Speaker
Yeah. That's true. Wait, did he? I typed in like, Suken as English voice actor. And when I went to his IMDb, like, Pokemon started playing. So now I'm like, who'd be playing Pokemon? What do you mean Pokemon started playing? Like the like the video, there's like a video reel, like next to his picture. Oh, showing like this highlight stuff. And I'm just like, what? I mean,
00:33:27
Speaker
Who knows Pokemon's been going on for so long. Eventually make time to do. Oh, he plays Oozooie in English. Well, I do know like in English, isn't he Oozooie, Sukuna and isn't he also someone from My Hero as well? Professor Sarais or series from Pokemon.
00:33:50
Speaker
Uh, he played Mephisto in Ultraman. He played... Mephisto confirmed. ...Gimodero in Block Clover, Sword of the Wizard King. He was in Cyberpunk. He's been in a lot of things. But yes, we have entirely gone into, uh, Voice Actor Land. I do want to come back because there's just still... The inner and outer blood thing
00:34:18
Speaker
I wanted this fight to last longer. I really, really did. And I'm hoping that Choso has not fully lost his mind, and we get to see a little bit of a rematch in upcoming episodes. Because, yeah, I want more of these two characters going head-to-head. Because, like, UG vs. Special Grade, or a high level like this, show us that power, man. Do it.
00:34:44
Speaker
I'm sorry. I don't mean to cut you up. I'm going to stop looking after this. He plays Etragon in Justice League Dark. Oh, there you go. And Nails plays Mithrax in Destiny 2, which nobody else like, but I play that game a lot. So, OK, I'm done with that. Yeah, if anything, like, I think this set the bar for what the rest of the action should look like, because Gojo's little, you know, one one thousandth of a second thing that he did was really cool.
00:35:14
Speaker
But this definitely set a bar of like, you can't go anywhere beneath this between for fights now. Like, I'm sorry. Yeah. Yeah. No, this is, it's set in the bar high and it's like, Oh, we're not at a finale. We're not even at like, this was a major fight, but I'd argue there's more major fights at the table for the rest of the season. So the bar's up there. Let's shoot the moon. Let's do this thing. Do it. Do it. Oh God.
Cliffhanger Thoughts and Speculations
00:35:40
Speaker
We still have the Fushiguro face off.
00:35:44
Speaker
Yeah, there's everything is still like I did finally notice opening You know, it's like the opener kind of like teases it was gonna happen in the season like you finally see them like looking at each other. Oh You watch the opening video. Yeah, you're totally right that there is all those Definitely like so suddenly no bar is like looking up at the sky right after that. Oh
00:36:08
Speaker
Well, it's kind of like the... I can't remember what the name of the prison realm is, but that's like shown in the first...
00:36:17
Speaker
It's shown in the first like 10 seconds of the opener. And I just didn't realize until like a week or two ago, it's right there. But if you're not like, they did, they do a very good job with the JJK openers and other anime as well of like hiding the stuff in plain sight. It's not quite like that's one complaint with Demon Slayer is they show all of it in the opener and you're like, well, where's the rest of the surprise for the season?
00:36:43
Speaker
But yeah, I think that this opener is a lot of fun. It's all it reminds me like chainsaw man, how chainsaw man, everything was in that opener. And we had no idea it was just like, Oh, look at these fun dancing things. Yeah, we were fighting over like if one of the characters was dead because she had angel wings. And I was like, No, that's entirely different character. Because this is different. That was different. The whole thing. And then I was like, I told you so. Yeah, exactly. Like just so many things like that.
00:37:08
Speaker
that was fun. That was a very fun. I don't think I I don't think I look for hints as much as I acknowledge things after I've seen it. If that's when it's good is when they're hiding in plain sight, like, oh, you see them and something clicks in your brain. And you realize like, oh, that's what's actually going on, as opposed to
00:37:30
Speaker
Oh it's there, now I know this person's power or something along those lines. I'm sorry Demon Slayer season 3, your opening was terrible and giving everything away.
00:37:43
Speaker
Like it was a good opener, but I watched it that first time and I was just like, there was literally everything for the rest of the season. There's at least entertainment district. We knew exactly when I love hot shows. Oh, now the wood dragons are out. Q. Yeah, like there was all of that. Hell, there was the moment at the end of that opener where spoilers, if you haven't seen Demon Slayer season three for some reason, what are you doing?
00:38:06
Speaker
that Nezuko's muzzle is on the ground and we're like, oh, so Nezuko's gonna lose her muzzle this season, which is like the big reveal at the end of the season. I still cried my eyes out. I was still like a little surprised, but the fact that I could anticipate it sucked. I mean, she always fights without her muzzle, but not, wait, no, I lied. Stop. I'm gonna stop myself there. Yeah. I think all of that is actually available on Netflix and Hulu now in English and Japanese.
00:38:37
Speaker
Yeah, it should all be English. I don't know about Netflix, but I think like it was like within the last two weeks, all of it was available. This is a very recent thing. Oh, I thought Demon's Eye was one of the ones that was coming out like two, three weeks after.
00:38:51
Speaker
I think it was only on Crunchyroll, maybe. I think it's availability on more streaming platforms is what the big thing is. Yeah, that that has lost me since Netflix did the password sharing thing. I don't have Netflix anymore. So I don't know what they're like. I pay for Crunchyroll and Crunchyroll. Like that's the Netflix on your phone.
00:39:13
Speaker
No, because it's the whole like you can only like, so with Hulu, it's like, they have the the pass which I think especially because I have live for football now. So when I go visit my mom, it's like you're not in your zip code, you can still open it up on your phone and like
00:39:31
Speaker
airplay it over, but you can't like, log in here. And I was like, this is dumb, but okay, I'm still going to use it. Yeah, it's, I don't know. Either way, I don't, to my knowledge, have access. And I don't, I don't mind it. I'm reading this. It doesn't matter. Yeah, I've, I've seen it and Crunchyroll gives me what I need. So that is great. Is there anything else you want to talk about with this episode? Give me more of this animation. It's just freaking awesome. Yes.
00:39:59
Speaker
I'm prepared to be whelmed next week with a explanation, a backstory, a jump to entire different carry. If it was an explanation episode like last week, I'm perfectly fine with it. It does bum me out with this episode. Just knowing that Mecha Maru is actually dead and he's just conserving his energy right now. Mecha Maru, we haven't had time to cope with that.
00:40:25
Speaker
The second that Miwa pops up, I'm going to cry. He's like one of my favorite people.
Upcoming Animation Releases Excitement
00:40:30
Speaker
Oh, it's going to hurt because you know she's going to have some sort of emotional reaction to it. Every time I play Destiny with two of my friends, like I'm definitely the one who does not play as well as the other. So whenever I die and I wait for Reza, like useless Miwa here. Like when she answers the phone. How sad. Hit my microphone here.
00:40:54
Speaker
So on the topic of Crunchyroll having all the things that I need, have you been keeping up with our favorite show of all time, Spy Family? I haven't had the time. You haven't had the time, darn. I was going to give our listeners a little bonus at the end of this episode and say we can have a mini Anna minute.
00:41:17
Speaker
I'm gonna scold you live on air, watch it, like make time. So cute, so fun. I mean, I'm home this weekend, so I actually can't. Yeah, I forgot how, just like, feel good inside, Spy makes us feel. How dare you? How could you forget? Like, no, I remembered being happy. I think they came out the gate swinging with these first couple of episodes. That's all I'm gonna say? That's enough. All I'm gonna say,
00:41:47
Speaker
be prepared to feel happy. But all right, I guess we'll have to tease that as a later thing, because we don't have a ton to say. I don't foresee us covering Spy on the cast, because we have so much going on. I was going to ask Jay Scottie, just because we haven't casted with him in a while. Maybe I do that with him and this with you, or we just do a mid-season thing, or every three episodes saying
00:42:17
Speaker
Well, after October, I can have much more clear insight on how we get all this done. Well, I do think there is definitely a there's gonna be a lot of scheduling things. I'm out of town for three weeks. Zuhair is out of town for like a week here and there.
00:42:35
Speaker
last wedding of the year. His last wedding of the year. I'm in Japan for three weeks, which is gonna be awesome. But I'm not gonna be near a television or a microphone. So JJ K is gonna be out. But it's not just a bunch of televisions. I mean, yeah, but definitely not lugging this microphone in my singular backpack that I'm taking on this trip. But you and Jay Scottie will have listeners you haven't been keeping up with other animation stuff.
00:43:02
Speaker
Invincible not only dropped a season two trailer, but it is coming out November the third, which is the day that I leave for my trip. So maybe I will be appearing on those episodes eventually, but I am presuming that my co-host will be running rampant the week that comes out. So that's going to be something that's going to be something. And then what was the other trailer dropped out? Scott Pilgrim, man. Oh yeah. Scott Pilgrim. Yep. That's a movie that right now show.
00:43:32
Speaker
I think it's... I think it's a... I can't remember. We're excited for it. And at some point, question mark, question mark, question... Oh, no, wait, we have a date. Yeah, Attack on Titan the final season is also the day that I leave, if I'm not mistaken. I was like, wait, we don't have a date for it. I think it's actually... We do have a date for it, and that's why it's been omit from my brain. I have been rapidly planning a trip. Wait, when is it? I think it's November...
00:44:03
Speaker
the third. Oh boy. So like, if there's anything that I record while I am on the trip, it it will be a voice memo. That is my thoughts if if and when I get the chance to watch that Scott Pilgrim is a series scheduled to release on November 17. Okay, it is a series nice. But if it's Netflix, it'll probably one of those they all drop at once things. Maybe
00:44:32
Speaker
Alright, so Scott Pilgrim, Invincible... November the 4th, apologies, is when Attack on Titan final part arrives, so... That might be like a long, longer episode thing like the last one was. I... I can't guarantee anything. I don't know with them. I feel like it almost guarantees it's gonna be an hour.
00:44:59
Speaker
But it's like, they have so much more to still happen. They'll probably have one more part. Yeah, is it gonna be two hours? Is it gonna be three hours? Is it going to drop? They're gonna be like, ah, yes, the final part of the final season of the final thing arrives to theaters in 2027. I believe it. I believe it. I do think that Attack on Titan has fallen off of a number of Mount Rushmore's due to the
00:45:26
Speaker
way that it has stretched itself so far and so thin at this point. It's weird that I tell people I watched the first episode like in my second year of college, and then I realized I graduated college eight years ago. Yeah, it's been going on for so long. Has this been going on for over 10 years? Oh, yeah, I think it's been over 10 years at this point.
00:45:51
Speaker
Four seasons over ten years! I mean, but you say four seasons. Do we talk about season four? Like, season four has been going on, what, two, three years or something like that? Almost ten o'clock. Yes, Zuhair needs sleep. I need food. And you lovely listeners,
00:46:16
Speaker
need your time back as well. So we will see the rest of our time. Hope that you have a lovely day with the rest of your anime, the rest of your fun. But with that little bit of time that we are giving back to you, if you could do us a favor, leave us a five star rating and review, it is the best way to help out a podcast like ours or really any of your favorite podcasts. Seriously, do not just rate us rate any podcast that you're listening to. I recently started Dungeons and Daddies, which is a fantastic Dungeons Dragons podcast, they do not need
00:46:46
Speaker
my credit because I think they're all like internet famous at this point but it is one of the funniest Dungeons and Dragons podcast I've tuned into a while and I myself wrote a rating and review for them because I'm like I can't preach this without practicing so even though they have probably thousands of reviews I'm not looking at it right this moment it always helps any podcast no matter what

So if you could do that for us or any of your podcasts, that's great. You can also leave us any sort of feedback. We love hearing from you animation deliberation podcast at gmail.com, as well as any of our social medias, follows animation deliberation on Facebook and Instagram, as well as animation to live one on Twitter slash X. I still don't know how to do that one. But besides that, do here, what else do you have going on? It's a lovely fall time of year. And I feel like there are some sports that take up a lot of time when it comes to that.
00:47:38
Speaker
I may or may not have been watching Thursday Night Football the whole time we've been recording. 30 seconds left in the first half. Oh, Derek Farr just fumbled. Oh, that was the most I paid attention to it, but yeah. Check out 323 with Reed Murphy. It's not just Farr, we talk about a lot of silly stuff on top of that as well.
00:47:58
Speaker
We talked a little bit about the writer strikes and what that has opened up in terms of actors and animators and stuff. We talked about the top five fictional

movie athletes, which was really entertaining. It's always a good time. Andrew always sees me like log in and just like still laughing from like whatever we recorded before. And then be sure to check out Friends of the Show Peeves Gapfest. And if you're on TikTok, check out the Buffest Hunter. I talk about playing Destiny a lot. That's what I play with. He streams quite often. So if you need any of my unfiltered shenanigans, it is definitely 18 plus. Be sure to check that out over there. And on top of that, be sure to tune in next time. That's T-double-O-N-I-N and as always, stay well.
