Introduction and Guest Welcome

00:00:01
Zuuuuu
On another exciting episode of the Animation Deliberation podcast, nobody got you the way like we do as we talk about Kaiju Number 8, Season 1, right after this.
00:00:12
Zuuuuu
Welcome back to another episode of Animation Deliberation, of the podcast where we take action animation and cartoon seriously, but not too seriously. I'm your host Suheraly, and on this very special edition of Anime Deliberate, the only person that comes in when we have that title, welcoming back the great Brian B. Klein. How you doing, bud?
00:00:27
Brian V. Klein
I'm doing great. Thanks for having me, especially to talk about this show.
00:00:30
Zuuuuu
Yeah, we haven't done this in a while and we were just talking I think over the summer about anime that we've been wanting to watch that's on our list and you said that you watched this before solo leveling so I skipped solo leveling and went straight to this one as well so that we had something to talk about and obviously something to podcast about.

Brian's Podcast Updates and Anime Rewatch

00:00:48
Zuuuuu
Before we get into it, tell the people what's going on in your podcast first.
00:00:55
Brian V. Klein
right now, we're sorry, that was is an unintentional thing. I said right now, because that's how we started all of our podcasts up.
00:01:00
Zuuuuu
yeah
00:01:02
Brian V. Klein
We just we just finished off our coverage of X and the source pages podcast we
00:01:02
Zuuuuu
Yeah, really sell it.
00:01:09
Brian V. Klein
We were doing Uh, this past week, I got the all along review and comparison to the primers we did, which actually, there wasn't a lot of back at the Harkness comics out there.
00:01:18
Brian V. Klein
And the Wanda, um, um, Scarlett, which one we did actually has a lot of ties to this show.
00:01:24
Zuuuuu
Hmm.
00:01:24
Brian V. Klein
I'm not going to spoil anything on the show, but a lot when we're watching it, I'm texting Haley back and forth going, on who's my. The other host on the show. It's like oh my god. Oh my god This has actually been like the primer help because a lot of the stuff that happened in this comic Which was based on scarlet witch and I got that was sort of like a secondary character is in the show So we got that going on We have we actually got a whole bunch of stuff coming up next week We're doing a primer for the penguin when they were a little late on it But then we're gonna be doing a review and comparison the week after that and there isn't a lot much lot stuff coming up, but you know with what if and
00:01:59
Brian V. Klein
Skeleton crew, basically, we just do use comics and novels as a primer or continuation or adaptation for TV shows and movies that are coming out. And yeah, that's about it. We just did one of our side shows we have is called The Sacred Jedi Text, where we cover Star Wars novels. And I think we got a episode of Tommy Waimi Talk, which is our Doctor Who podcast coming up because we got the Christmas episode coming up shortly. So, yeah, where' we pretty much put out something every week and it's just
00:02:30
Brian V. Klein
fun to do.
00:02:31
Zuuuuu
at from
00:02:31
Brian V. Klein
But we don't talk about anime, which is why, and I watched, I mean, I was looking at it, I think the app I use, the only app I hit more than Crunchyroll is my mail app and Facebook and Messenger.
00:02:45
Zuuuuu
so
00:02:45
Brian V. Klein
its Literally, I have so many hours on Crunchyroll right now.
00:02:50
Zuuuuu
Okay, let me let me get to the country real fart part first fart, what else are you watching anime wise right now?
00:02:57
Brian V. Klein
Well, I talked to you about this a while ago, the beginning of 2023, I started my rewatch continuation watch of One Piece because that show is just, I mean, I had watched it in the past and then I fell off because of just timing and stuff.
00:03:12
Brian V. Klein
I'm on episode 960 something right now. So I'm almost caught up to with them having their first break. This is the first break in the history of their anime. They're taken off until April and probably will be caught up by the time it comes back.
00:03:25
Brian V. Klein
But I think that's because Oda,
00:03:25
Zuuuuu
Nice. That's incentive. That's a good that's a good finishing mark lined.
00:03:29
Brian V. Klein
Yeah. Well, the thing is, he Oda went and he's working on the live action series season two for Netflix, which is awesome.
00:03:35
Zuuuuu
Oh, gotcha.
00:03:35
Brian V. Klein
If you haven't seen the show, they're also redoing the anime.
00:03:39
Zuuuuu
yeah that's that's a rumor that i got very excited about where it just kind of like thins it down it's official reanimating it to give it the more modern graphics and stuff because we saw what viz media was able to do uh when they did the naruto 20 year anniversary video like all of the opening songs in one nine and a half minute montage and they reanimated the scenes like all the
00:03:48
Brian V. Klein
Yeah. Mm hmm.
00:04:01
Zuuuuu
the highlight moments of that and the quality was incredible and like all i asked was like you can keep all the original voice but like please do something like this for naruto so i've been hesitant to watch one piece because it's like i barely have the time to watch the stuff that i actively do enjoy and need to keep up with on a regular basis so there's no way i could commit the time to binge that but if they are going to reanimate it and kill some of the the filler talk and, you know, make it shorter and just easier to consume. Like by all means, like, yeah, definitely going to be on board for that.
00:04:32
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, I think what they're just basically doing is there's a lot of recap episodes and it's also one of those shows to where, you know, the the show starts and then, you know, you got a minute and a half, two minutes of the opening theme and then you've got like.
00:04:45
Zuuuuu
Mm-hmm.
00:04:47
Brian V. Klein
three minutes, usually sometimes of the episode that you had just watched at the end, you know, so there's actually each episode ends up only being about 17 minutes of actual time.
00:04:51
Zuuuuu
Mm-hmm.
00:04:56
Brian V. Klein
So you can you can fly through when you're binging it.
00:04:57
Zuuuuu
If that.
00:04:59
Brian V. Klein
But there's also a lot of episodes that are complete recaps or like throws flashbacks and stuff like that. So but with it being on, for I mean, it's celebrated its 25th anniversary.
00:05:10
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:05:10
Brian V. Klein
They are cleaning the stuff that the animation technology is so much better now than it was back then.
00:05:14
Zuuuuu
Mm hmm.
00:05:15
Brian V. Klein
So I've tried.
00:05:17
Zuuuuu
Yeah. Speaking of anime technology,

Kaiju Number 8: Structure and Storytelling

00:05:20
Zuuuuu
we've been watching a really cool one. uh kaiju number eight i feel like the the the the sentiment that i had for this was what we said about black clover where it is very shown in jump there is a lot of predictability in some of the storylines and build up but they always throw something in there that just makes you go oh damn that actually caught me off guard or it's just a delivery whether it be the voice acting or the animation or the story like just everything about this is so topped here and such a wonderful show it was great to binge and the best thing about the way that it was structured was that every four episodes was probably like its own mini movie right and that's how i was telling you i think it was like every friday night for three weeks that was my movie night was i just grabbed some popcorn sat down hit play watched four episodes until like midnight and i was like yeah i'm content with that that was a great way to start it off end it
00:06:01
Brian V. Klein
yeah
00:06:09
Brian V. Klein
Yeah.
00:06:15
Zuuuuu
The cliffhanger is kind of like rolled through as it needed to. And then it was a clean stop, went to bed, did the next thing, the same thing the next week. It was just really cool how it was structured.
00:06:23
Brian V. Klein
You know what, I didn't even really even think about that where it's sort of like. the first four were like the process of becoming to getting onto the defense force. And then the second four were like just the learning bit.
00:06:34
Brian V. Klein
And then the last four were that, you know, attack on the base and, you know, that whole final thing that he gets revealed and, and no.
00:06:37
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:06:40
Zuuuuu
Cause you can't have an anime without a training montage. I'm i'm just waiting for the tournament to come up now.
00:06:45
Brian V. Klein
Yeah. I was going to say that training month, what I watched it was you had said, that I'm like, this reminds me that part there, the, the training, not the training, but like the application process of the,
00:06:56
Brian V. Klein
getting into the defense force was very much my hero, like the training thing where it was just like, okay, the whole process of them, what they have to do, but it's not killing as many people as you can is going to, or the Kaiju is going to lift you up over everything.
00:06:59
Zuuuuu
Yeah, absolutely.
00:07:10
Brian V. Klein
It's how you work under pressure and work as a team and be able to evaluate which, you know, our main character. He has to realize, I mean, that's another thing too, is that this thing could be in the heat of a battle and then all of a sudden they have you laughing your ass off because of just comments and just the, you know, the, the way that they interact with each other.
00:07:24
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:07:29
Brian V. Klein
So.
00:07:31
Zuuuuu
Yeah, I think that's one of the big things that was, that really threw me off is I wasn't ready for how funny this show was. The facial expressions and Kafka's dialogue and just all the, it never takes away from what's going on, but it's always just hilariously put in there.
00:07:38
Brian V. Klein
Mm-hmm.
00:07:50
Zuuuuu
And speaking of Kafka, I think it's amazing that we finally have an anime that isn't based around a kid. like yes we have a lot of people who are probably like in their teenage stuff right now but the fact that we actually have a main character that has lived life a little bit and is doing things as an adult and is trying to strive for things as an adult like a lot of these stories except for the ones that involve students really don't need everyone to be a freaking kid like your demographic is not just a younger audience you are clearly appearing two people in in our age group so it's just it was refreshing to see
00:08:13
Brian V. Klein
no i do take offense to the fact that he was the old guy in like ah totally out of shape and he's 32 in the show which is a little bit older than what you are and a lot younger but the fact is that yeah even in anime too when you're watching stuff like my hero or someone either shows is that they never
00:08:26
Zuuuuu
Oh yeah. I'm 31. I definitely took offense to it.
00:08:40
Brian V. Klein
animate them to look like teenagers. I mean, if you're sometimes you're watching shows like this guy's supposed to be a freshman, he looks like he's 28 years old, but you know, the way they animate the people but actually, after I watched it, I looked and I'm like, this looks like, wait, what studio did this?
00:08:47
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:08:56
Brian V. Klein
And then I realized that this was done by I can't even remember the name of it. But it's not one that is very I think their main thing that they've known are known for is like, fully coolly.
00:09:07
Brian V. Klein
And that's pretty much it. because it does have a lot of the look of like, uh, jiu-jitsu Kaizen, but it's not that, it no, but I mean the, the demons in jiu-jitsu and the Kaiju in this have a lot of the same expressions and overall look.
00:09:12
Zuuuuu
I published by Viz. No, I definitely wasn't mapper. Mhm.
00:09:28
Brian V. Klein
So that's why it made me think of it. I could tell by the character design that it wasn't, it's like something I G.
00:09:35
Zuuuuu
Oh, production IG.
00:09:37
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, so then they're they're not like they've been around forever but they don't have like, it's like when you go on to like, like sent a anime works, then you look at their shows and you go okay I know food wars, but the rest of this is like they've got 8000 shows on there but hardly have ever heard of them so you know,
00:09:54
Zuuuuu
Yeah, they did psychopaths. They're doing Uzumaki. Or did they come out ready? And let's see.
00:10:07
Zuuuuu
Yeah, a lot of stuff that I just haven't heard of. Attack on Titan Junior Hide.
00:10:10
Brian V. Klein
Exactly.
00:10:11
Zuuuuu
Did you ever watch that?
00:10:12
Brian V. Klein
No.
00:10:13
Zuuuuu
Oh, that show was funny. It was so silly. They did Hike You, The Volleyball.
00:10:19
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, I saw that one too.
00:10:20
Zuuuuu
a Ghost in the Shell Arise. Psychopath. OK, yeah.
00:10:27
Brian V. Klein
Oh, another thing you went.
00:10:27
Zuuuuu
I mean, not that I keep up with the insane amount of things, but at least there's a couple of things I noticed on here. but Regardless, they did a phenomenal job with Kaiju number eight, and I'm so excited for more seasons to come on that, especially because a few of our animators are wrapping up like Demon Slayer and My Hero soon.

Character Development and Humor in Kaiju Number 8

00:10:43
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, I did want to bring back to one point when you were asking about what I was watching earlier, too, is that there is a show. It's on Crunchyroll called Ghost Stories. And it was an anime that came out about, I think, late 90s.
00:10:53
Zuuuuu
Okay.
00:10:55
Brian V. Klein
And it did very poorly in Japan. So then when they sourced it to America, they pretty much allowed the voice actors doing the dub to say whatever they wanted. And it is freaking hilarious.
00:11:06
Zuuuuu
Oh no.
00:11:09
Brian V. Klein
It's almost like watching like Harvey Birdman or see West 2021 or like those space ghosts where they take the old animation and put this bizarre dialogue over it. It's one of those things that people say it's like the worst American anime ever, but it's got like a four point nine out of five on Crunchyroll because people are like, this is so bizarre that it's awesome.
00:11:27
Brian V. Klein
But so I would say go check that out because it's it's only got like 20 some episodes and I'm like four.
00:11:32
Zuuuuu
Is it meant to be a comedy?
00:11:34
Brian V. Klein
It's I think they meant to they meant it to be.
00:11:37
Zuuuuu
like that the english i guess this looks very uh case closed to me that was a great show i like it okay i added it to my list that would have been a great uh halloween episode to do
00:11:38
Brian V. Klein
The American version of it was meant to be that way because they just knew that no one was going to watch it or care what they did so.
00:11:48
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, it does. It's got that late 90s look to it. So. Yeah, we can almost do like a like a review of that, kind like what were they thinking? But it was genius. So anyways.
00:12:07
Zuuuuu
But we are almost a week removed from that now.
00:12:09
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, time constraints, too. I mean, we're busy people.
00:12:13
Zuuuuu
That's true, I can barely keep up with the shows I genuinely want to.
00:12:15
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, which it was guide you number eight.
00:12:18
Zuuuuu
Yeah, I told myself I'm not starting solo leveling until we finish recording this too, so I'm glad that I can finally start a new anime after we wrap this up and then I'm definitely gonna have you back on for that.
00:12:24
Brian V. Klein
Right.
00:12:28
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, I did see I sent you the thing where they were like, information about guide you number eight season two coming in December.
00:12:35
Zuuuuu
Yes, I meant to bring that up. Do you have the the date or the timeline or whatever it was?
00:12:40
Brian V. Klein
It was they sent out a thing that said Kaiju number eight season two nip yet is new info on December 22nd now I know that they're they're doing like Because it kind of gets me sometimes when you get these new shows And I think it might almost be a little bit more of they don't want to throw the money in it Right away that all these shows now season one is like 12 episodes.
00:12:42
Zuuuuu
I meant to open with that. December 22nd. Yes.
00:13:01
Brian V. Klein
Yeah chainsaw man. You've got this It's like they I don't know how much but this it this ended
00:13:04
Zuuuuu
Mm-hmm.
00:13:08
Brian V. Klein
Cajun number 8 and Chainsaw Man pretty much ended at 12 episode at perfect place to end the season where it's like holy cow.
00:13:13
Zuuuuu
Sure.
00:13:15
Brian V. Klein
So.
00:13:16
Zuuuuu
Yeah, i was I was talking to one of my friends about that, and we've had this conversation about Demon Slayer as well. Like, the the fight between Uzui and Gyatara was like two, maybe three pages in the manga, and it was like five or six episodes.
00:13:33
Zuuuuu
in the anime so it's just it's one of those things like big because it's it can be a stereotypical storyline and whatnot all the things that i was praising at the beginning is the stuff that they have to nail right
00:13:47
Brian V. Klein
Mm hmm.
00:13:47
Zuuuuu
uh so if they can get through that trial period that you just mentioned then it's like okay we can really invest in this long term knowing that we have a certain audience that's hooked to it and what got me interested in the show was seeing some of my favorite content creators making stuff about this seeing the cosplay about it and then it was just like one thing after another just really started intriguing me my roommate finally started watching it and then you brought it up so I was like okay like it's not just a little phase of a popular content for like a week like we're go we're six months into this at the time that you know this came out in English
00:14:29
Zuuuuu
And I started watching it that I finally got into it. So I mean, I'm I'm definitely hooked. I can't wait for more. I hope that this is a series that goes on for a while.
00:14:39
Zuuuuu
And I truly hope the next season is more than eight episodes because they are one of these good and man is a good in English.
00:14:43
Brian V. Klein
Right is it's one of those things you gotta look at The, the manga has pretty much it been around, it's only got 14 volumes so they can't really do it too much because it they don't want to go past it because the manga has only been around since July of 2020.
00:14:55
Zuuuuu
Hmm.
00:15:01
Zuuuuu
That's why we have a teaser about news.
00:15:03
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, so you don't want to end up doing like they did in the early 2000s where shows like Hunter Hunter and the full metal where they pulled the quote unquote Game of Thrones where they extended past where the manga was and sorry was like we don't have any more content we got to make stuff up or do whatever that is but I'm Yeah, especially when they said Blackover was like it ended where we're supposed to end.
00:15:08
Zuuuuu
Oh, absolutely.
00:15:19
Zuuuuu
We don't want to get stuck like Blackover 2 or something happens to the creator and you're just sitting there like, come on, more content.
00:15:27
Brian V. Klein
It's like, no, it didn't. It ended when Asta finally realized he met his demon and everything licked. And then now all of a sudden, like, that's not the end. But I was in the same boat as you was. I heard rumblings about it, but that all of the anime sites and even on Crunchyroll, every time I would come up, like I turn it on, the header was new episode of Kaiju number.
00:15:46
Brian V. Klein
Like it was promoting the heck out of it. and You saw it all over the place.
00:15:48
Zuuuuu
Mhmm.
00:15:50
Brian V. Klein
anne And I didn't was never really like a big Kaiju guy like Godzilla, that type of thing, because that's, you know, technically where I've learned what Kaiju was. But then once I started looking into the storyline, I'm like, this is interesting.
00:15:59
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:16:03
Brian V. Klein
And then once I brought it up to you, and we start talking about it. That's when I was watching like, holy crap, dude, this is like, it hits you with so many different things like there's like the team aspect and what they're doing reminds me of fire force and then like the bat like the kaiju and stuff remind me of the demons in jujitsu kaizan and then you got the my hero aspect of it and then you've got uh it has like a little bit of tokyo ghoul in it too so it sort of has like but then that's just weird like you were saying this like there's times where and
00:16:27
Zuuuuu
Yeah Yeah Yeah
00:16:32
Brian V. Klein
kaiju number eight kafka when he's in the kaiju form is acting all big and tough but then he goes to like kikuro and like kneels down it's like please don't tell anyone please don't tell anyone please it it does like that so he it totally starts like weirding out and i love how they do that like most of the anime where they go from the serious animation to the more cartoony and he's just like you can't tell anyone about this so uh yeah i mean
00:16:57
Zuuuuu
Yeah the structure and organization part of it is cool. It's nice that it's like something that's been around for a while that there is the defense core and you have your idols and there's you know purpose behind what they're doing and what they're going for. Very similar to you know what we appreciate about Demon Slayer like the core has been around for a while the demons have been around for a while.
00:17:16
Zuuuuu
you have the base thing of like everyone has this uniform and everyone's gonna at least have a sword but then there's like little corpse and stuff that makes everybody a little bit different we got one guy who uses ice rounds we got someone who's a sniper someone who uses knives someone who's got a big axe
00:17:30
Brian V. Klein
Yeah,
00:17:31
Zuuuuu
So having all those little things that you know that there's similarities and continuity between kind of like how the structure is and how the organization formation of everything is but they still add the little things to each character just make it a little more exciting and it's really cool because you get to see everybody like work with just the guns to be able to you know evolve into their specific styles but still work in team dynamic.
00:17:32
Brian V. Klein
amongst us.
00:17:55
Zuuuuu
And then you have the Nezuko of it all where it's Kafka just turning into this badass monster that can just blow nuclear bombs worth of monsters away.
00:18:05
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, that's still got I totally forgot about that. And I rewatch where he saves the base by like, that's how he I mean, he's basically just like, hi yeah, he um just does it and he saves everybody.
00:18:11
Zuuuuu
When he unveils himself.
00:18:14
Brian V. Klein
And then they're still just like, you're still kaiju, dude.
00:18:17
Zuuuuu
He's our team, he's still the Division 3.
00:18:18
Brian V. Klein
But yeah.
00:18:20
Zuuuuu
We can't have Division 3 saluting to a Kaiju.
00:18:24
Brian V. Klein
No.
00:18:24
Zuuuuu
I don't know, why would we do that?
00:18:26
Brian V. Klein
No, that's my that's my captain in there.
00:18:28
Zuuuuu
Oh captain, my captain.
00:18:30
Brian V. Klein
Do you want to just go over?
00:18:31
Zuuuuu
I like how he's a logistics guy. like Even you know going through it all, like his combat power is pathetic and he can't really do much and as they joke he's the old guy, but because he's been literally cleaning monster shit for so many years he just knows everything about them and even when he had to talk to the vice captain like he had so much respect for him that
00:18:33
Brian V. Klein
Yeah.
00:18:50
Brian V. Klein
Yeah.
00:18:55
Zuuuuu
when he heard him on the comms he was like I'm listening you have my attention like what do I need to hear because anything that you say has value to it so for him to earn that level of respect in a way that kind of goes outside of what's expected to him of him in terms of being a soldier was really cool should he be in the lab like our what was the girl's name that I said as a champ
00:19:13
Brian V. Klein
Oh, yeah.
00:19:18
Zuuuuu
I know you had the name written down.
00:19:18
Brian V. Klein
okak okcaogie
00:19:20
Zuuuuu
Yeah, he should be in a room with her somewhere, but you know, he's doing great on the battlefield.
00:19:22
Brian V. Klein
Okanoki Yeah, if I don't think that I don't think he's smart enough to be that type of he's sort of like the jack-of-all-trades But it's just that his I mean all the things that got him.
00:19:31
Zuuuuu
Definitely Jack.
00:19:32
Brian V. Klein
Yeah the things that got him actually, I mean, we could go over his life story, but this was, this is what 12th or 13th time applying. And he's flunked out the second in the, in the first round of the actual trials, 12 other times.
00:19:42
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:19:46
Zuuuuu
yeah
00:19:46
Brian V. Klein
So now he finally, the, all of the stuff in his, what he does is his regular job is that once they, the defense force comes and blows up the kaiju, then the secondary people come in and clean up the mess.
00:19:57
Brian V. Klein
Well, he was in the group of people that cleaned up the mess because
00:19:57
Zuuuuu
Mm-hmm.
00:20:00
Brian V. Klein
And that's how he learned about vital points and where the cores were and other stuff just from knowing so much about it and ended up saving people's lives countless times.
00:20:03
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:20:09
Zuuuuu
Absolutely.
00:20:10
Brian V. Klein
But him still being the old guy at 32 is kind of like.
00:20:14
Zuuuuu
And my age, too.
00:20:18
Zuuuuu
All right, do you have a favorite character?
00:20:21
Brian V. Klein
I don't I mean, it's hard not to say Kafka just because of his everyday guy type thing. But I think after learning more of his backstory, Soshiro Hoshima, he's the guy that's the vice captain.
00:20:39
Zuuuuu
Mm-hmm.
00:20:40
Brian V. Klein
He is, I mean, the reason why he ended up picking Kafka after all this, because no one wanted him, is quote unquote, he's hilarious.
00:20:47
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:20:47
Brian V. Klein
You know, he makes me laugh. But that he probably saw, he saw like, because even that, like they have these power suits that they can get maximum of like 20% or this net and that.
00:20:55
Zuuuuu
They're in the 90s.
00:20:57
Brian V. Klein
the Kafka got zero, he got nothing out of it.
00:20:59
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:21:00
Brian V. Klein
And then finally, when it went to 0.01, it's like, something's working here. um There is a lot like I was when I was right now on the list of the characters here.
00:21:11
Brian V. Klein
You've got pretty much your main four or five. but You got Kafka and Renault, who is the guy that came with him from the, you know, the garbage cleaners.
00:21:16
Zuuuuu
Uh-huh. Yeah.
00:21:21
Brian V. Klein
Kikaro, who at first was that it was I thought she was going to end up being more of a character who was like the snotty. Her dad is the head of the whole defense force for the company or the country. But she ends up turning to be a lot more layered of a character.
00:21:34
Brian V. Klein
Mina and Sociro who are the captain and vice captain. And then you got the, three main guys that joined the team with, uh, Kafka and Renault.
00:21:42
Zuuuuu
one point on Kikuro real quick, the scene where we were going through like the test phase and she came across was at Kaiju 9, or just one of the big guys, and like, like she broke her it was like her first time losing basically.
00:21:51
Brian V. Klein
Yeah.
00:21:57
Brian V. Klein
yeah
00:21:57
Zuuuuu
That shriek that she had was like it gave me all the heebie jeebies. First I was just so impressed with like how badass she was.
00:22:08
Zuuuuu
i'm I'm between Kikuru and Hoshina being my favorite characters and when they teamed up I was just like super giddy, even like rewatching some of it just now. But that that screen that she had really set the standard of like stakes in the show.
00:22:22
Brian V. Klein
yeah
00:22:23
Zuuuuu
it shows like how serious that threat was, what kind of stuff we're dealing with, what the vibe of this is really going to be going forward. So like hats off, not only to how that character was written, but just the vocal performance by that, uh, voice actress just really, really, really selling that. And for all the people who say that it's always subs over dubs, you are wrong. Dubs have been gotten better and better and better. And this is a perfect example of how good they are.
00:22:52
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, especially with me, it's where I mean, a lot of times when I'm watching stuff and I had to watch this, I even told you, I go, I watched the last episode of this subtitle because I had to find out how this thing ended because of what I was watching.
00:23:04
Zuuuuu
Oh yeah, when Season 2 comes out, I'm definitely watching in Japanese weekly, but I'm going to be doing a rewatch in English because they deserve that time.
00:23:05
Brian V. Klein
i was Yeah.
00:23:12
Brian V. Klein
There was so many times with Renu and Kikuro in Iharo, the guy that has like the red hair and the jagged teeth, where you thought they were dead.
00:23:21
Zuuuuu
e
00:23:22
Brian V. Klein
They had holes in them. Luckily, their suits contained the holes, and then they were able to fix them later on. I mean, those suits, basically, they're like, they're going to save their lives regardless of you know anything they do.
00:23:34
Brian V. Klein
But then there's also a limit, where you find out that it's almost you can overpower them and overheat them, and then they start failing on you.
00:23:34
Zuuuuu
Mm hmm. Yeah.
00:23:41
Brian V. Klein
that when what's his face social was fighting the kaiju 10 when he became like the super kaiju when he died as a little guy and then grew to the big guy was like his suits overheating if he does anything more, he's gonna die because it's gonna basically kill him.
00:23:52
Zuuuuu
Mm hmm.
00:23:56
Zuuuuu
Yeah. And this is the thing for Mina, too, is she was like, Yeah, you were 1% from overheating yourself, like dial it back.
00:23:57
Brian V. Klein
So
00:24:02
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, it's like once you basically had to do the thing in order to kill the guy because, you know, it was that she's there to have it. That makes them human in the sense that they're not OP characters.
00:24:15
Brian V. Klein
They're not, you know, written to be, you know, they don't have plot armor either.
00:24:16
Zuuuuu
Yes.
00:24:20
Zuuuuu
and
00:24:21
Brian V. Klein
although none of them have died, although one of the guys even said, it's like, don't get to or, yeah, social said, don't get too attached to your people here, because you never know, you know, what's gonna, what's gonna happen to you, someone's gonna die.
00:24:34
Brian V. Klein
You know, everyone out there, it's a it's a difficult job.
00:24:34
Zuuuuu
Yeah, because.
00:24:37
Zuuuuu
Cause we see the scrubs go down left and right.
00:24:40
Brian V. Klein
Yeah.
00:24:41
Zuuuuu
and And I like that there's like a large enough army that you can kind of have those casualties just to give a sense of like needing to protect someone because every time there's an emergency, like you see swarms of people, like there's lots of troops.
00:24:52
Zuuuuu
It's not just our core group.
00:24:52
Brian V. Klein
yeah
00:24:54
Zuuuuu
so to see the extent of like how big this organization is, is really cool.
00:24:57
Brian V. Klein
Yeah.
00:24:59
Zuuuuu
And we talk about the armors and the limitations and being OP and stuff, man, that director having the Kaiju number two armor.

Animation Quality and Soundtrack in Kaiju Number 8

00:25:06
Brian V. Klein
Oh man.
00:25:07
Zuuuuu
that whole fight in the interrogation room was fucking insane like animation top tier platinum status right there
00:25:13
Brian V. Klein
that The thing about that too is that it Not only when you're watching the animation and it was like this fight is going crazy You've got Kafka being pretty much in prison in his own body trying to fight the kaiju that you know originally got him and So you're watching that and it's very emotional because he's like at that point He's trying to prove to people that he is still human.
00:25:34
Zuuuuu
yeah
00:25:41
Brian V. Klein
He's not fully kaiju and Before we start going in, I think we should talk basically what happened was is at the beginning, him and Ren we were working at that got injured cleaning up a thing and they're in the hospital and this little like eel looking thing who was the kaiju, it was probably about two feet long, just goes into his throat and then he becomes a kaiju, but he he can speak and he's not.
00:25:55
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:26:02
Brian V. Klein
For some reason, you almost think that this kaiju was malevolent in a way because we find out with kaiju number nine it was pretty much the same thing almost I think because he could turn himself into human but he's evil as hell man I just call him kaiju number nine's mushroom head because it looks like he's got a mushroom head
00:26:14
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:26:17
Zuuuuu
yeah to
00:26:19
Brian V. Klein
but so that leaves and he can go in between after I love how they did like that three month gap where after he joined the force where he could sort of learn how to control his changing into like he can contribut like just turn his legs into the kaiju when he's in the suit so he could run faster and not make it look like because he still can't figure out how to use the suit but in that scene him fighting to keep from the kaiju from completely taking over because his kaiju it grew in size and it was beating the crap out of the director and
00:26:33
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:26:47
Brian V. Klein
You know, maybe it was Kikuro yelling, like, don't, you know, don't, you're still in there Kafka.
00:26:53
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:26:54
Brian V. Klein
You know, don't let this overtake you. And then he realizes too, that, oh my God, I think the director is like, you know, oh no, it was the other guy, the other sub directors were like, he could have killed him.
00:27:05
Brian V. Klein
I think he's testing to see if he could use him as a weapon.
00:27:08
Zuuuuu
Mm-hmm But that's just that's how good that the the show is made and that episode was made is that like Logically, you're like neither of these people are gonna die But you're genuinely like worried like I was like, oh my god One of these guys is actually going to die right now.
00:27:09
Brian V. Klein
Cause who knows? I mean, you knew it was kind of be like, they're not going to kill him off. Cause then that's the show. Boom, it's over. You got to figure out something to it.
00:27:24
Brian V. Klein
Yeah.
00:27:29
Zuuuuu
Like this is fucking insane Yeah
00:27:32
Brian V. Klein
When he picks the director up and does like the Hulk with Loki and like the puny God thing, and he's picking him up and slamming him in the ground back and forth. I'm like, ah ah he's got to die. and It even said he goes, if it wasn't for the shield from gadget number two, the armor, he goes, I would have been dead already he because this guy's just wait.
00:27:45
Zuuuuu
Yeah, he definitely had like cracked ribs and a concussion and all that stuff. And he's just playing it off like, yeah, right no big deal. You're still on the team.
00:27:51
Brian V. Klein
Yeah.
00:27:52
Zuuuuu
We're good. And after
00:27:54
Brian V. Klein
I guess that's the only only nitpick I have about that. There is times like when when Kafka, when they were fighting the the one invasion where he saves Renu and Ihero.
00:28:13
Brian V. Klein
Renu is pretty much dead. I mean, he's got shot even kind of number nine standing over him and like pounding him like four or five times. through And it's going through his body.
00:28:21
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:28:21
Brian V. Klein
So he's got a lot of wounds. But then they show him like half an episode later, they're in the restaurant doing the the the party and stuff like that. And he's fine. So I don't know if there's a time thing or if there's like a super healing power that they have that the suits have that they could fix the stuff.
00:28:31
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:28:36
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:28:37
Brian V. Klein
But they're they're recovering very quickly from these major like almost they literally should have died, almost died type things.
00:28:46
Zuuuuu
Mm-hmm.
00:28:47
Brian V. Klein
So but it's it's anime.
00:28:48
Zuuuuu
Yeah That's just that's It's not a plot armor.
00:28:48
Brian V. Klein
So you sort of think, I mean, think about the other stuff they have in here that is kind of not it's plausible, if not probable. So.
00:28:59
Brian V. Klein
It's very nitpicky.
00:29:00
Zuuuuu
It's just anime armor like alright, we need to move on with the story like we need this guy.
00:29:01
Brian V. Klein
Yeah.
00:29:04
Zuuuuu
He's fine We needed to make a graphic to really sell it, but we're good. Let's move on
00:29:10
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, that's the thing too is that like I was mentioning before sometimes the graphic ness like when they blow up one of the Kaiju and then it starts literally raining blood. That's like that, that sort of graphic ness of the not the gore factor as much is reminds me a lot of chainsaw man to when he's just going at someone it's just blood splattering all over the place and it's crazy like that.
00:29:29
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:29:31
Brian V. Klein
So
00:29:31
Zuuuuu
Yeah, it sure got messy.
00:29:33
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, but it's not disgusting in that way because they don't make it very like graphic graphic like they're getting but it shows like yeah I mean these guys have like their eternal organs are going all over the place and blowing up and there's blood all over the place and but that's not that's just the you know nature of the beast for a show like this so I mean I also cannot talk we cannot talk about how great the music is on this show
00:29:36
Zuuuuu
No.
00:29:41
Zuuuuu
They just really sell the severity.
00:29:51
Zuuuuu
No.
00:29:58
Zuuuuu
So I was just talking to my roommate about this, how first off I was shocked that Young Blood and One Republic had a song in this.
00:30:07
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, opening enclosures.
00:30:07
Zuuuuu
The music throughout the series is really good. They do do a lot of like Godzilla type sounds on the invasions, which is great. the soundtrack is incredible. As much as I love that song that kicks off the credits, it's way too happy for a lot of those cliffhangers that we get.
00:30:19
Brian V. Klein
Mm-hmm.
00:30:25
Brian V. Klein
Oh, the.
00:30:25
Zuuuuu
like I was just watching the episode where Kafka started getting like fully enveloped and he's about to destroy the director nobody got you the way it's like no stop that adds to the drama where it's just like dark dark who's gonna die intense action see
00:30:30
Brian V. Klein
Yeah.
00:30:34
Brian V. Klein
I know.
00:30:40
Zuuuuu
and la la la la la la
00:30:42
Brian V. Klein
it's very yeah it's very upbeat and major key so it's just like hello yeah yeah
00:30:48
Zuuuuu
I love the sequence though, like just seeing our our girl in the chair just doing her thing at home. and like I love the the pictures and stuff that she's pulling up on the computer because it just adds more humanity to it.
00:31:01
Zuuuuu
It it shows a sense of brotherhood like between this core group of people and seeing them like outside their element and what she's been up to. it's just Everything about that is just so soothing.
00:31:11
Zuuuuu
It's just the timing after saying something. so It's a very hard song to skip.
00:31:13
Brian V. Klein
Yeah. Yeah. Oh, and I don't do that. I there's actually a Spotify mix I found that has that and also because there's so many great songs like scream. And there's another song I think it's called trauma something that are played during the show, the the incidental music in the show is also very
00:31:27
Zuuuuu
Mhmm.
00:31:31
Brian V. Klein
just you know overwhelming that it actually, you hear it and you can you know see it. Cause I played the playlist a lot with me, you know with my job, I'm in a vehicle for six hours at a day sometimes.
00:31:38
Zuuuuu
I'm blocking it up right now.
00:31:42
Brian V. Klein
So I had this on up, there's like a two and a half hour long playlist on there.
00:31:43
Zuuuuu
Same!
00:31:45
Brian V. Klein
And you hear the music and you're like, this just this sounds like kaiju number eight music. Cause it's very, just not metal, but it's not, it's it's it's it fits the the mood of the show perfectly.
00:31:58
Brian V. Klein
So. what you were talking about too.
00:31:59
Zuuuuu
Yeah, I mean.
00:32:00
Brian V. Klein
The only other thing I had is that they don't really have much development of there was, um, was, um, when, uh, what did they squad three got the four guys or the six guys really.
00:32:13
Brian V. Klein
And then there was three girls that made it. One of them was Kiko row. The other two, I can't even remember their names because one of them was the one girl that, Kafka saved.
00:32:21
Zuuuuu
Akari.
00:32:21
Brian V. Klein
And the other one is that the tall girl that you always see her when they're she's eating, she's like eating really fast and a lot of food.
00:32:23
Zuuuuu
Akari?
00:32:27
Zuuuuu
Akari is the one that he saved that they were just kind of chilling together in the last like during the invasion And I can't find the last one I am excited to see more of the like of the platoon leaders because they're pretty badass in their own regard and they show like snippets of that but I
00:32:35
Brian V. Klein
Yeah. And then there was the other girl who was the, like I said, they basically show her as in the third division as platoon leader. Nope, that is.
00:32:56
Zuuuuu
but between them and like a few of the characters that we have that are part of this division. I can't wait to just kind of see like storylines that just highlight them a lot more.
00:33:06
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, because they did really good with some of the times when you would you saw like the backstory of social where his his whole life everyone was telling him that he wasn't going to be a good defense force person because he was good with swords.
00:33:18
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:33:19
Brian V. Klein
And then finally, Mina was just like, I need you because I can't do shit with knives and swords and we need to be able to get close on contact.
00:33:23
Zuuuuu
yeah
00:33:27
Brian V. Klein
I do tell you that the one scene when Kafka is being transported in the back of the thing and Mina's there and she basically tells him like, you know, or he's like, can I still stand with you? Because Mina, who is the captain of the third squadron and our main and protagonist Kafka,
00:33:46
Brian V. Klein
They've been friends since childhood and their lifelong goal was to be in the defense force together and stand together and fight.
00:33:47
Zuuuuu
yeah
00:33:53
Brian V. Klein
Well, now that she's in charge and he's been failing out, that's still his goal.
00:33:53
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:33:56
Brian V. Klein
And so when he tells her that and she's like, I'll be waiting, because this is when she's taking him to get like, they already know that he's going to do number eight. They're going to, they might dispose of him.
00:34:07
Zuuuuu
here
00:34:07
Brian V. Klein
And one little tear, you just see like between his legs, one little like wet spot hit because he's tearing up and crying.
00:34:13
Zuuuuu
I love the wording of that.
00:34:15
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, let's pop between his legs. so Because Mina was just like, i'm waiting I'll be waiting here for you to come back.
00:34:18
Zuuuuu
Pause.
00:34:23
Brian V. Klein
And besides the fact that Renno, when they could take him away, he's like the same thing. Like, I'm waiting here. I know that you'll be set free and this and that. And so they all had faith in him because of what he did as the Kaiju with no one knowing.
00:34:31
Zuuuuu
through the
00:34:37
Brian V. Klein
He was never malevolent towards anybody that was in his group or anything other than Kaiju. so
00:34:43
Zuuuuu
Mm-hmm and about that relationship between him and Mina I loved the episode where Kafka tells everybody that they grew up together and they all just geeked out because like Everybody loves her like she's a celebrity because of just how incredible of a warrior she is So just the fact that every Yeah, they were definitely inspired by her it was it's truly incredible So just to see be like tell us everything you do her as a kid and this is that we gotta know and bla bla bla That was just a really cool moment for him
00:34:50
Brian V. Klein
Yeah.
00:34:58
Brian V. Klein
Pretty much everyone joined the Defense Force because of her. Literally.
00:35:13
Brian V. Klein
But I do also love too, like every time he doesn't say call her captain and calls her Mina, she like responds and then it's like 50 pushups, 100 pushups.
00:35:19
Zuuuuu
Yeah, it's like know your place.
00:35:21
Brian V. Klein
yeah Just like, you know, so yeah I'm your superior here still. Give me 50 pushups.
00:35:26
Zuuuuu
The real reason he need to figure out how to get just his arms to be kaiju mode so he can do those push-ups easier.
00:35:32
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, exactly. Because even like I said, they were showing him to that one scene when they were in the the spa before they were telling stories about they joined, and he like gets all buffed up and everything. And then you see his face turned red, and he just was like, plop, and he's got like this beer gut. And as a 32 year old, I mean, remember, Dan was like, Yeah, you're still kind of active. you You're not maybe going to the bars every night and everything. But it's just like, you're not fully there. There's some days when it's harder to wake up than others, but
00:36:01
Zuuuuu
Yeah, the the way that I eat on football Sundays is exactly why I got back into running.
00:36:01
Brian V. Klein
That's life. Yeah, sort of almost have to.
00:36:08
Zuuuuu
you It went from depressed eating to stress eating. We're actually in games now, so it's like, oh yeah, I got that i got that Kafka mod.
00:36:14
Brian V. Klein
I always say that's what happens when he.
00:36:17
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, that's what happens when you actually got a route for a team when they're doing well, they keep playing well, so.
00:36:21
Zuuuuu
Yeah, it's new for me.
00:36:23
Brian V. Klein
Yeah. well, you had the capitals a couple of years ago, so that's almost more like watching the Stanley cup finals is one of the most like aggravating and like anxious things.
00:36:32
Zuuuuu
They're like eight and three right now, too.
00:36:35
Brian V. Klein
So, I'm trying to think what else I had here that we could talk about. I mean, it's it like, it's if you
00:36:41
Zuuuuu
Yeah, and unfortunately I didn't do a whole rewatch. I just kind of watched the last four episodes before we got on, just so some of that could be fresh.
00:36:48
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, it's it definitely hits you. You're not bored with the show ever.
00:36:54
Zuuuuu
No.
00:36:54
Brian V. Klein
It's not just like it because it hit it's it's it's constant, but it's not always action packed, but the story is moving. And then sometimes, ah ah like I said, it'll hit you very heavy and then you get a laugh out of it. And then all of a sudden, it's very emotional again.
00:37:06
Brian V. Klein
And then just a character development and how much the people I mean, Kickaroo from the first time you see her when she's mad at them for parking. First off, that's a government-based vehicle that she just picks up and throws.
00:37:19
Brian V. Klein
And he was like, not to work, man. It's like, yeah, but he still works for the government, too. So it's like, they should have charged. But the thing is, though, she's got money because her dad's done you know in charge of this whole thing. But seeing it like, oh, god, this is the entitled Brad, whose daddy is the one that got her there.
00:37:33
Brian V. Klein
But then she proved her worth like right away.
00:37:35
Zuuuuu
Oh Yeah, yeah, she was she was not just talk like as soon as she lived up to it.
00:37:38
Brian V. Klein
No.
00:37:39
Zuuuuu
I'm just like so she's fucking awesome.
00:37:42
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, but that's the thing that storyline too is that her dad still thinks that she's a failure.
00:37:46
Zuuuuu
Oh Yeah, when she came into the office to like defend Kafka and he was just like really are we just going over all your failures right now?
00:37:47
Brian V. Klein
So.
00:37:53
Zuuuuu
I'm just like, oh
00:37:54
Brian V. Klein
Oh, dad. The one thing I always wondered too, even after a second time, is that I wonder if Renu and Kikuru got any kind of discipline for knowing for the whole time that he was kaiju number eight, because it was obviously when they when he transformed to save them from the the kaiju nuclear bomb.
00:38:13
Zuuuuu
Mhm.
00:38:14
Brian V. Klein
They were aware of who he was. They could not have known it because he was just like, you don't want to do this stop. You're going to get caught. And even Kiku was yelling at him like, what are you doing? And everyone else is like, what? That's oh, my God, that's Kafka is kind of your number eight.
00:38:26
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:38:27
Brian V. Klein
And they were all like, oh, no, who what's happening here? So i mean you got to think of that to almost be like ah guilty by association that they knew and didn't say anything.
00:38:36
Zuuuuu
Well, like now that we know the amount of respect that division three still has for Kafka, I wonder if it was just kind of like, we're going to pretend we didn't hear that from those two.
00:38:43
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, that's the only thing I thought of too, but sometimes there's people that they even mentioned is like, these guys are by the book, but then it's also like, we're family, so.
00:38:48
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:38:51
Zuuuuu
Yeah, I don't think they want to lose their own. And there's so much emphasis on just kind of, like they had to elevate Kikuro's status to give her a custom weapon that's reserved only for captains, advice captains, because the threats have gotten so out of hand.
00:39:09
Brian V. Klein
Right.
00:39:09
Zuuuuu
Like they can't afford to lose an asset like this if this is something that works. So if it's like, we got to bend the rules a little bit just to get a weapon to make sure that like society lives on. It's something that they have to really look past.
00:39:21
Brian V. Klein
that part of it reminds me a lot of like the last season or so of my hero where the threat has gotten so big that they have to elevate the students into like full active heroes because they need all the people where this is like, yeah, these guys have just been the full
00:39:22
Zuuuuu
so
00:39:37
Brian V. Klein
you know they're they're brand new to the squadron but yet they're going in full on against these you know it just happens to be always in their district that these things are showing up so and i remember when they the kaiju 10 attacked their base and i mean it's pretty much in an open area you'd always have to think of like once an intelligent kaiju came around it's like
00:39:41
Zuuuuu
Yeah. Yeah.
00:39:54
Zuuuuu
Are you the strongest here?
00:40:01
Brian V. Klein
hit them where they are so you could knock out that part of it because the rest of the kaiju that are always there they're kind of like mindless beasts I mean they don't really have much of a plan they're pretty much just like a lion on the Serengeti going to you know track its prey but it doesn't have any kind of sentience to be able to be like oh let's go hit them where their main battlefield is
00:40:15
Zuuuuu
No sense of intellect, it's very primal.
00:40:22
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, so when he shows up with the Wyvern, which those deaths those were cool as hell too, when they show them and they're attacking their headquarters, their training grounds where everybody is, who by the way, it just happens that you know their captain has to go away for a bit because she has to go talk about something else.
00:40:26
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:40:38
Brian V. Klein
it's like
00:40:39
Zuuuuu
Convenient.
00:40:39
Brian V. Klein
that leaves Sociro to be the vice captain to be the the hero now, which is cool because that fight scene with him and Kafka as Captain, as Kaiju number eight at that point after that was all settled was kind of like, all right, this is kind of cool.
00:40:53
Brian V. Klein
I mean, that was before that, but it was still just like,
00:40:54
Zuuuuu
That was the first scene that came across my Instagram that I watched that made me go, okay, I'm sold.
00:41:00
Brian V. Klein
Yeah. It's just like, because, yeah, he's like, wait a second. What's he doing here now? He's not even being offensive. He's being defense. He's pulling his punches. And then later on when he finds out, when so I was like, yeah, when he comes back here, we're going to fight real because he used to be, I should get him for insubordination for holding back against fighting his superior officer.
00:41:16
Zuuuuu
The disrespect.
00:41:20
Brian V. Klein
Yeah. Disrespect for that.
00:41:21
Zuuuuu
how the scene of him in the in the gym like reenacting the fight just man so much respect for that dude such a cool character
00:41:26
Brian V. Klein
Oh yeah.
00:41:31
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, everyone has, ah ah you know, enough of it where it's not like you don't have any kind of, knew at first, like in my hero, like Bakugo's general attitude can get kind of grating where the fact is like, he's almost like, I'm gonna go in, I'm gonna beat the crap out of everybody. And then I sort of, I don't care about you, I don't care about you. But then now he's learned to like,
00:41:51
Brian V. Klein
I think once he figured out who Deku really was now this often, and now he's like, now I actually have to like earn this type thing.
00:41:55
Zuuuuu
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
00:41:57
Brian V. Klein
With this is like, it's it has a lot, that type of camaraderie has a lot of the same feel as like Fire Force does, where you've got these guys where you got one guy that's actually like the big, the one that's going to be going in and doing all the heavy lifting, so to speak, but everyone is in integral to the final outcome, being what you want it to be.
00:42:04
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:42:16
Zuuuuu
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. They, they... bash on each other a lot but they definitely want to see each other grow and Kafka even had the dialogue of like look how far we've come everybody's working together i'm gonna be like them one day and that just turns into a monster i'm gonna be the wizard king
00:42:34
Brian V. Klein
yeah Like they even said, a couple of them said that, like, you're my rival now. That reminded me a lot of, like, in Black Clover, where he's just like, yeah, I'm going to fight with you. I'm going to, you know, I'm going to, yeah, but we both have the same goal in the end, and I want to, even like with that, with Sasha Roetelling Kafka, like, your job is to stand beside her, so you want my position.
00:42:54
Brian V. Klein
And he's like, yeah, you know, I'll get there someday, maybe. But, you know, in the meantime, I'm not going to undermine you.
00:42:58
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:43:01
Zuuuuu
And even like Kikuro having the respect of, or, Reno having the respect of Kikuro when he stepped in with the freeze rounds.
00:43:08
Brian V. Klein
Yeah.
00:43:08
Zuuuuu
And she was like, wow, he's like really comprehensive of what's going on and really on his feet. Cause he was like, Hey, you're going to work with me as long as you don't get my way. I'm like, that's awesome.
00:43:18
Brian V. Klein
Yeah.
00:43:18
Zuuuuu
Like, yes, they have that dialogue that's just bashing on each other, but you really see the, the ability to just use the assets that are at your disposal to just have structured teamwork.
00:43:19
Brian V. Klein
He even said that he like.
00:43:30
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, you make do of what everyone's strong point points are and balancing its balances the team out by doing what you know, especially with like Kafka coming in saying this person like with the wyvern saying that they fly like here so they're, if you get a direct frontal assault is not going to do anything you got to hit them from the back underneath the soft part of their, their, their armor and stuff like that otherwise it's not gonna, you know,
00:43:49
Zuuuuu
Mm hmm.
00:43:53
Brian V. Klein
He's not going to be able to do it himself because especially like in the training round, he's like, my God, without the suit, these guns are super heavy. So he just leaves his big gun behind and he grabs the two revolvers or like the two pistols he has in his sides.
00:43:59
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:44:03
Brian V. Klein
And it's like, I'm just going to use these now. So I can't lift the gun.
00:44:06
Zuuuuu
And then even like with that plan, like the other wyvern comes in and says like, yeah, they're kind of protecting each other. What do we do now?
00:44:13
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, like, OK. And then that that scene still like they blow up the when she comes back and because yeah that too is like even I knew it was happening.
00:44:14
Zuuuuu
Outcome. but
00:44:21
Brian V. Klein
But when he just makes a decision, like I've got to turn into the kaiju to save everyone. And then Mina shows up, takes out her big gun, blows the crap out of kaiju number 10.
00:44:32
Brian V. Klein
And it was like, okay, cool. But then I was going to look up and there's this gigantic, all the Wyvern are, you know, amassing to this big bulbous. Whatever. And they're like, this thing's going to be enough to be like a nuclear bomb.
00:44:42
Zuuuuu
nuke it's
00:44:44
Brian V. Klein
Like hope we're dead.
00:44:45
Zuuuuu
like hey remember how we said this thing explodes stop shooting at it yeah excited to find out what news we're getting on december 22nd
00:44:49
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, it's not doing any good here, so. What a show, man. There's so much good stuff out there right now. It's not even that's why I said we had to talk about this just because how, you know,
00:45:03
Brian V. Klein
Awesome it is.
00:45:09
Brian V. Klein
News is that production for season two will start in January of 2026 or something like that.
00:45:10
Zuuuuu
yeah
00:45:14
Zuuuuu
Give me a teaser or something I mean I guess I would I would very much like to know just what their timeline is like and how things are looking because it just gives me something to look forward to but If if it actually does end up being a teaser, that would be awesome
00:45:16
Brian V. Klein
they
00:45:29
Brian V. Klein
I did see a speaking I did see a thing that showed that like the next and final season of Fire Force is supposed to come out like in June.

Future Speculations on Kaiju Number 8

00:45:39
Brian V. Klein
So because that that's the other thing it's only got so you got to think about how so the manga for Fire Force has 34 volumes that has three seasons, but each one of their seasons was 24.
00:45:52
Brian V. Klein
And I know they're splitting the season three into 212 episode arcs from April next year and then January 2026. So you figure, okay, so that's 72 out of four. So fire, I mean, kaiju number eight should be able to have another, you know, 12 to 15 episode season already in the works with what manga is out there already.
00:46:12
Brian V. Klein
So plus it takes time to actually, you know, make the animation so
00:46:12
Zuuuuu
Mm hmm. Yeah, sorry, thinking maybe next fall.
00:46:19
Brian V. Klein
Probably hopefully you never know with it. I mean, I'm still waiting on you know They're talking about how they're about season three of one punch man and one punch man season two ended in like 2015 I think Come on, this isn't the Sopranos
00:46:32
Zuuuuu
All I'm gonna say is that I had to wait four years between every season of Attack on Titan and watch that every week. So I have very little sympathy for people who take up their long ways.
00:46:46
Brian V. Klein
You know, but I think there wasn't the main thing with One Punch Band is that they it changed studios like two or three times.
00:46:52
Zuuuuu
Yeah, I wanted to map up.
00:46:53
Brian V. Klein
So.
00:47:01
Brian V. Klein
yeah
00:47:03
Zuuuuu
it's it's also like I haven't even watched season two of One Punch Man. I've watched season one three times with the anticipation of getting into season two and then just never continue because they got distracted one way or another.
00:47:14
Brian V. Klein
It's good because that's when they start getting it's almost like a. The team building thing where all of the heroes start fighting a common enemy. Yeah, looking back now, one punter Fire Force 24 episodes in 2019, 24 episodes and ended in December 12th of 2020.
00:47:32
Brian V. Klein
So it's been four years since Fire Force ended this last season.
00:47:33
Zuuuuu
Yeah, it's been a while. I watched both of those seasons together.
00:47:37
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, me too.
00:47:38
Zuuuuu
And then so I definitely want to rewatch that sooner than later and then start rewatching Soul Eater too, because there might be some connection there.
00:47:41
Brian V. Klein
Before.
00:47:46
Brian V. Klein
Oh, that's true.
00:47:47
Zuuuuu
Because of the cliffhanger. And for people who haven't watched, I'm not going to say too much, but there was a cliffhanger that just related it to a whole other show that's been over for years now.
00:47:50
Brian V. Klein
It is solely. No.
00:48:00
Brian V. Klein
What was it? Oh, it was another thing i I'm watching. I just finished the final part of season. Did you watch ever watch Seven Deadly Sins?
00:48:09
Zuuuuu
That's one that's been on my list. I just haven't gotten around to Okay
00:48:11
Brian V. Klein
Well, there's a continuation series on Netflix called the four of the. The Four Nights of the Apocalypse, which takes place 15 years after the end of s Seven Deadly Sins. Some of the characters from that are still in it and then the rest of them. And so that's on Netflix, too. That's a really good show to you as far as the way that storyline works with everything. And it's got like the tie in movies. It's in everything. that's I think Netflix is pretty much the yeah only place where you could see it right now.
00:48:39
Zuuuuu
You know, the anime for Soul Eater ended in 2009.
00:48:43
Brian V. Klein
Oh, yeah. A lot of people don't realize some of this stuff like Hunter Hunter ended 10 years ago, and it was just that it got popped in at a perfect place.
00:48:49
Zuuuuu
Yeah. The production quality is just so good on anime.
00:48:54
Brian V. Klein
But the I mean, i've I've read a lot of the stuff that end of the manga this past. I mean, Hunter Hunter is one of my top five shows of all time, and I read the manga past it and it's almost like a complete they could come back and do Hunter Hunter Dark Continent as a continuation series.
00:49:11
Brian V. Klein
But the creator took so much time off from the manga itself because of health issues and other things. And if you don't have the content, you don't want to fall into the trap of they had before. We're like, if you don't have stuff to put out there, what are we supposed to do? Like with Black Clover is is another example too. So, but you also don't want to do the same thing as like, I know some people are complaining about how short Demon Slayer's run is on anime. The manga wasn't very long. The manga was only like 60 or 70 volume. So,
00:49:39
Zuuuuu
yeah and you have they did enough character development that if they wanted to do spin-offs and stuff off of some of these people or maybe show kind of like their backstories like all that's available but I would I would rather hear it I mean just like the Hashiran stuff of what they went to like more of Tengen's background and Ren Goku's dad and what it was like when he was a Slayer even teacher
00:49:48
Brian V. Klein
Oh, I would love it in a nose case. A nose case show would be hilarious. Oh, yeah.
00:50:06
Brian V. Klein
Oh, yeah.
00:50:07
Zuuuuu
Ubu Karaki? Karaki?
00:50:11
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, the one where, I mean, he's got a like nice backstory too, so.
00:50:14
Zuuuuu
Yeah, so stuff like that, like they have the opposite. So it's just one of those things where it's like you have a good story that start to finish was just topped here. I respect it. It's like Ted Lasso.
00:50:24
Zuuuuu
They wanted to do three seasons. They finished at three seasons, you know, just keep keep good stuff, good stuff.
00:50:27
Brian V. Klein
People want more, but.
00:50:30
Zuuuuu
But there's an opportunity to have spinoffs and I would very much enjoy that. But I'm not going to miss too much because obviously they're making like three freaking movies out of it now.
00:50:35
Brian V. Klein
And it gets me excited.
00:50:40
Zuuuuu
And I'm just so stoked for that.
00:50:41
Brian V. Klein
Well, that's what that just shows you how big this show is, is because the next the next arc, the whole Infinity Castle arc is going to be three movies.
00:50:45
Zuuuuu
Oh yeah.
00:50:48
Zuuuuu
Mm hmm.
00:50:49
Brian V. Klein
And then after that, I think there's there's one more arc after that, which is like the finishing arc, because I hear people that when they talk about the show on the anime forums, it's like, oh, you got to wait to see how this thing ends.
00:50:50
Zuuuuu
In IMAX.
00:51:00
Brian V. Klein
And it's like, don't say anything. That's the reason why a lot of the shows I don't like, I could sit there if I wanted to and read the rest of my hero to find out how it ends.
00:51:08
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:51:09
Brian V. Klein
I don't want to because I want to see it unfold and be excited about it because there's been enough times where you see stuff.
00:51:13
Zuuuuu
Because it's the animation that we're attached to and that's why we love this podcast and talking about it because all these stories don't hit the same on page like they do on our TV screens.
00:51:15
Brian V. Klein
Yeah.
00:51:23
Brian V. Klein
No, and it looks a lot different, too, like seeing things in full on color and the animation, and I've read some of the.
00:51:29
Zuuuuu
More creative life sounds.
00:51:30
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, the Demon Slayer stuff. I mean, I still man that first time and even the last scene of the last episode of Demon Slayer, when all the Hasura, I mean, spoiler alert for something that's ended a while ago, but when they're all falling in the Infinity

Animation Quality Across Different Anime

00:51:42
Brian V. Klein
Castle, the way that they animate the Infinity Castle is just so amazing.
00:51:43
Zuuuuu
Mhm.
00:51:46
Brian V. Klein
The animation on it is just mind blowing.
00:51:47
Zuuuuu
There were so many side-by-sides of like what the manga page looked like and how it was animated and just the people who read manga were blown away by it.
00:51:56
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, they've stoned so much money into that where it's like, even though I'm in playing like the Demon Slayer games for PS4 and 5, it's like, my God, this looks amazing.
00:52:02
Zuuuuu
Mhm.
00:52:04
Brian V. Klein
it's it's that It's probably hands down the best looking anime out there.
00:52:05
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:52:08
Brian V. Klein
On top of it, it's a great anime too, so.
00:52:10
Zuuuuu
Yeah very very unique design compared to stuff that we've seen.
00:52:14
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, because some of the stuff can be basic, you know, even some of the watching some of the stuff from one piece, getting later on, it still has a basic design. It's not layered and textured. But that's how to show if it all of a sudden change animation style to be more like the image layer, it would be kind of jarring.
00:52:24
Zuuuuu
Sure.
00:52:29
Brian V. Klein
But that's how they do it. And different things that you don't want all the stuff to look the same anyway.
00:52:31
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:52:34
Brian V. Klein
So
00:52:35
Zuuuuu
Yeah, I mean Dragon Ball Z had that issue where like you had this original design that looked really good and then you modeled it more for Super, which I still like that design i and have a problem with it. But I didn't realize how different it was until they made the Broly movie, which took the original animation design. Everyone's like, wow, this is so cool. You got to bring it back to that. And then artists were like trying to.
00:52:58
Zuuuuu
draw like what scenes in that movie would it look like or like some of the stuff from Super would it look like from there and then you had the freaking Gohan movie where everything was just like 3D modeled and it looked atrocious and I was like wow how did you go from something that everybody was saying looked freaking stunning that you should change the whole series back to to this this this is what we picked no no no no no no no listen to the people more because clearly we were on to something
00:53:25
Brian V. Klein
Yeah, just sometimes you don't end up changing. It's like, I don't know if you've watched a lot of studio, I call it Studio Ghibli stuff.
00:53:34
Zuuuuu
Ghibli, yes.
00:53:34
Brian V. Klein
but they made that like one of their last movies they had like four years ago was like a 3D animated movie and it was terrible and nobody liked it.
00:53:42
Zuuuuu
I've only they seen a handful, which one are you referring to?
00:53:44
Brian V. Klein
arrogant the witch.
00:53:46
Zuuuuu
I haven't seen that one.
00:53:47
Brian V. Klein
that one looks like I mean, it's not done in the traditional style of like, you know, Princess Monoke and Castle in the Sky and Kiki's delivery service and stuff like that, or they went back with Last Year Boy and the Heron to that design, but to say we're gonna it's almost looks more like like Monster House or one of those 3d move.
00:53:54
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:54:06
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:54:07
Brian V. Klein
It's just like it does. Why?
00:54:08
Zuuuuu
Yeah, well.
00:54:08
Brian V. Klein
That's not your style. That's not who you are. Don't change it up. to It's like they would be like Metallica putting out a disco record second can work.
00:54:15
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:54:16
Brian V. Klein
So yeah,
00:54:16
Zuuuuu
Hard pass. so yeah, we're getting close to the hour mark and the last 15 minutes of this was just definitely top on anime in general. So anything else you want to talk about for Kaiju number eight before we close this out?
00:54:29
Brian V. Klein
give it a chance. I mean, you could probably not do this thing in a weekend.
00:54:33
Zuuuuu
I'd be amazed if somebody listened this far. like They almost really listened to this far and they haven't watched the show.
00:54:40
Brian V. Klein
That's true. I would think of someone like like Andre Sparks would be listening, but he's already probably seen it, too. So he listens.
00:54:45
Zuuuuu
True.
00:54:46
Brian V. Klein
I think everything on the network, which we love him for. And he sends in, you know, a lot of ah content. And I remember even even saying a couple months to ago, like, where's animated alert or animation deliberation?
00:54:56
Brian V. Klein
We need this stuff back. We need all these shows back, man.
00:54:58
Zuuuuu
Yeah, we got we got so many random messages on Facebook and Instagram and emails like, are you on a hiatus? You're not gone for good. art it's That's really what pushed me to come back is just knowing because for me, it was just like, and people aren't going to care that much. Like, I have a new business now. Mine and my co-hosts schedules aren't lining up. Like, you know, if it falls off, it falls off. But the amount of people who are just like, you know, we're waiting for episodes. i'm like Well, I owe it to the people like I need to get back because I miss doing it.
00:55:26
Zuuuuu
I love doing it Especially when I can just talk so openly and freely with people like you it just makes it so much more fun and obviously like what is all this content if you don't have like people to talk to and enjoy with so Yeah Yeah, now we can share this conversation with people
00:55:37
Brian V. Klein
Right. And most of the stuff, it's it's a difference between doing this or us messaging back and forth, being like, oh my God, like talking about. Yeah, and it does and there's it makes a lot better when you could do it with people that have that same mentality.
00:55:52
Brian V. Klein
of you I mean, I even talked to you about a few months ago when we were bringing this up. like Do you want to continue that show? Do you want to do something on my network to do it? And it's like, well, you don't want to change the it's the same kind of format.
00:56:03
Brian V. Klein
You don't want to step over J. Scottie's feet saying he doesn't want to do the show anymore. He's too busy with doing other stuff.
00:56:10
Zuuuuu
Mm-hmm.
00:56:10

00:56:29
Zuuuuu
Is that the the DC Universe kickoff on Max?
00:56:31
Brian V. Klein
That's the d c show and yeah the DC other DC on Max, the first one that's in the the DC you proper.
00:56:35
Zuuuuu
Nice.
00:56:38
Zuuuuu
Well, apparently it's not. I got corrected on that quite aggressively recently.
00:56:42
Brian V. Klein
Oh, really? Well, James Gunn needs to. I mean, it's his one of his babies, so.
00:56:48
Zuuuuu
Yeah. Yeah. This is one of those things like they're excited to do, but it's not like totally glu part of the universe, but I don't know.
00:56:53
Brian V. Klein

Zuuuuu
Yeah, that's fair.
00:57:00
Zuuuuu
Yeah, understandably. I mean, if we didn't make the timeline.
00:57:00
Brian V. Klein
It's like, OK, yeah.
00:57:04
Brian V. Klein

Zuuuuu
We're just.
00:57:05

Zuuuuu
Yeah, we're just here for hopefully good content.
00:57:11
Brian V. Klein
Yeah. And not that there was anything wrong. I mean, some of the DC movies were kind of hit or miss, but their stuff on Max, Teen Titans or Titans and Doom Patrol and were fantastic shows, especially Doom Patrol.
00:57:20
Zuuuuu
Mm-hmm. What, it was DC Universe? Yeah.
00:57:25
Brian V. Klein
That show is just I can't believe how good that show was.
00:57:27
Zuuuuu
Swamp Thing was really good and just their stupidity got it canceled.
00:57:29
Brian V. Klein
Yeah. Mm hmm.
00:57:32
Zuuuuu
Screw you, State of North Carolina, for messing that up.
00:57:36
Brian V. Klein
It's always something, but those shows were you know destined to be on a chopping block with the new
00:57:37
Zuuuuu
There are always some time.
00:57:41
Brian V. Klein
Anyways, that's save that for DC on screen.
00:57:45
Zuuuuu
