Introduction and Theme Song Antics

00:00:01
Zuuuuu
on another exciting episode of the animation deliberation podcast we are swinging back to midtown as we're talking about your friendly neighborhood spiderman the first two episodes now available on disney plus and talk about that i much more right do that you no control
00:00:16
J Scoots
Sing along if you know the words. ah ah One, two, three, it's time for animation deliberation. A conversation and a conversation. Oh, wow. I really just messed that up. It's been too long. A conversation and a celebration of our favorite action animated series. Yeah.
00:00:33
Zuuuuu
Yeah, welcome back to another.
00:00:35
J Scoots
I think I tripped myself up because as I was singing it, I was like, I wish I had come up with some kind of rap to like match the hip hop stylings of the theme song of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, but I threw myself off.
00:00:44
Zuuuuu
We just have, like, the AD song playing in the background and a rap, like, going...
00:00:48
J Scoots
Yeah, and yeah something like that.

Nostalgia and Modern Animation

00:00:52
J Scoots
What's going on?
00:00:52
Zuuuuu
I mean, hey, I'm Zuhair, you're Jay Scottie, and I think we're both fans of the theme song to start things off for the show.
00:00:59
J Scoots
I am a fan of the theme song and so many other aspects of the show.
00:01:04
Zuuuuu
Yeah, I mean, just sticking on the song in general, there was a lot of similarities of just kind of how they did X-Men 97, you know, carrying on to like the original design and stuff. So there was a little bit of like trying to throw in the nostalgia of that look into this. So when it kicked into that song, I was like, oh, cool, it has nothing to do with that series, but they're still kind of riding that same thing. And then when they threw like the modern version of it right there, I was just like, OK, yeah, this is really sick. That's this is a great, great opener.
00:01:33
J Scoots
Yeah. And as a recall in episode one, it was like a good five minutes into the episode before we ever even got treated to the intro. Like I think they did the whole establishing sequence with Dr.
00:01:40
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:01:43
J Scoots
Strange, which we'll talk about, but, uh, yeah, yeah, just everything you're saying about the theme song, like the stylings, how it's, it's a throwback to like the, uh, almost like not only the sixties visualization that we see, but even like the spider man.
00:01:58
J Scoots
Spiderman, like I think that is from like one of the original animated series until like weave it into the hip hop overtures. Like I am already like looking forward to memorizing as many of the lyrics as I can.
00:02:11
J Scoots
The one line that like continues to stick out to me across both episodes when he said something like,

Disney Plus Surprises and Disappointments

00:02:15
J Scoots
if that's not fair, I'll play the world's smallest violin because I'm also a big Spongebob fan. So I immediately think of Mr.
00:02:20
Zuuuuu
Yeah,
00:02:21
J Scoots
Krabs playing the world's smile smallest violin.
00:02:24
Zuuuuu
yeah I love that.
00:02:25
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:02:26
Zuuuuu
I've been talking about style and stuff. Disney Plus needs to continue to underwhelm me on trailers and promotional material.
00:02:32
J Scoots
Hmm.
00:02:34
J Scoots
Sure.
00:02:35
Zuuuuu
I'm so excited for the acolyte, and it was disappointing.
00:02:37
J Scoots
Hmm.
00:02:38
Zuuuuu
I didn't really care about Skeleton Crew, but I watched it, and it was a lot of fun.
00:02:42
J Scoots
I love skeleton crew.
00:02:43
Zuuuuu
And then when I first saw the trailer for Spider-Man, I was like, this is not what I was expecting. I don't know if I'm going to be able to watch this. Love the first two episodes. So Disney Plus, whatever you're doing to just not have me interested in your trailers, just keep it up because it's working.
00:02:59
J Scoots
Yeah, you and I have talked off air, so I know you haven't watched What If season three, but I watched What If season three, and while I liked it by and large, it's always cool to be playing in the world of What If. I thought it was the weakest season of What If that we've had, and the fact that it was the final season was just kind of disappointing. So kind of to your point, to kind of come off of that slightly underwhelming, slightly disappointing experience, and just something that I had virtually no expectations for like when it came to my my anticipated properties from Marvel and for 2025, the only property that I had like lower on my radar than this is Marvel zombies.
00:03:34
J Scoots
And that's just because we've already kind of seen it across. What if we've had a couple of episodes that dabbled with zombies? And I've said this a lot of places, but I just I feel like zombies are a little overdone. So if you don't have any if you don't have something like super unique or special to say, I'm not super, super
00:03:45
Zuuuuu
Yeah.

Spider-Man's Promising Future

00:03:49
J Scoots
interested off the bat.
00:03:50
J Scoots
But yeah, this thing
00:03:50
Zuuuuu
It's super zombies.
00:03:52
J Scoots
there I mean the fact that it is the Marvel characters is enough to to get me to watch it because if it was just like Honestly, if it was just an animated show about zombies unless I heard a really good word of mouth I probably wouldn't check it out.
00:04:03
J Scoots
But again, like
00:04:03
Zuuuuu
and
00:04:06
J Scoots
Very little to no expectations going into this thing. and And like you said, it was, I was so impressed with everything across the board with episode one. And I was like, are they going to be able to follow it up with episode two?
00:04:16
J Scoots
And sure enough, they did. So it's, you know, it's early on in the season, but I'm feeling really, really good about the show.
00:04:18
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:04:23
J Scoots
And you kind of mentioned X-Men 97 in passing, like, I think this is the most jazzed I've been. for definitely for animation on Disney Plus, but it's the most jazz I think I've been for a Disney Plus show since X-Men 97.
00:04:39
Zuuuuu
Okay.
00:04:41
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:04:42
Zuuuuu
Yeah, i think I think that the bar to hit, which is like top tier animation was the last four episodes of Clone Wars. It is really hard to meet that expectation, but that's a very high bar.
00:04:52
J Scoots
Okay.
00:04:58
Zuuuuu
But yeah, for this show, I guess we can just get into spoilers because the big thing about the story that I really want to talk about is the whole time I was watching this episode, I was not sure if it was connected to like our Earth 616.
00:05:01
J Scoots
Yeah at this point. Sure.
00:05:09
Zuuuuu
This was like our Peter Parker that we know, like our Tom Holland Peter Parker.
00:05:09
J Scoots
Oh sure. Absolutely.
00:05:13
Zuuuuu
And as because I think the initial impression was that like the name was going to be called Freshman Year and it was Tom Holland's Peter Parker.
00:05:18
J Scoots
Correct.
00:05:20
Zuuuuu
And this is just like how we got his powers and yada yada.
00:05:20
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:05:23
Zuuuuu
So I was kind of going back and forth, I was like, is this? Is this not it? And then when he had the scene with the bus, I was like, oh, shoot, that's the scene that Tony Stark shows.
00:05:33
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:05:33
Zuuuuu
in Civil War I was like oh cool this really is that version like that's what we got this is part of it and then like this he finds the DVD player then walks upstairs I was like this is actually it like how does he Tony Stark and then boom Pops and Norman Osborn I was like oh I'm hooked you got me on that I am very excited for all the little twists and turns and nooks and crannies you are about to take me down for this show bring it on that was such a fantastic cliffhanger because that was so giddy leading up to that
00:05:34
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:05:38
J Scoots
For sure.
00:05:45
J Scoots
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:06:03
J Scoots
yeah And the buildup to that reveal was just so perfect because like even in like the the opening sequences, just like seeing Aunt May, but it's a version of Aunt May, it's like, but you're kind of going for a Marisa Tomei thing

Art Style and Animation Techniques

00:06:16
J Scoots
there. If you want to say that's but Marisa Tomei, I'll believe you. But then when we had Dr. Strange come in and the voice actor was not Benedict Cumberbatch, but he was clearly doing his best Benedict Cumberbatch. He sounded a lot like him. So I was like, okay, they're making a concerted effort to make this guy sound like,
00:06:32
J Scoots
bit of a Cumberbatch and then there was the, yeah, there was the Iron Man like mirror decoration.
00:06:33
Zuuuuu
It's like started to sound like him and then it was just like more whimsical.
00:06:40
J Scoots
I was like, okay, so the Avengers exist within this world. But then to your point, when we had that first bus stop, I wasn't as confident as you. I was like, ooh. is that, that looks a lot like that phone footage that we saw in Civil War, but I wasn't 100% sure.
00:06:53
J Scoots
then, yeah, everything from when he found the DVD player and the the Alt-J song kicks in. That's when it solidified it for me, because that is the same exact song that they use in the Civil War sequence.
00:07:04
J Scoots
It's Left Hand Free by Alt-J, which is a great song.
00:07:07
Zuuuuu
Oh, OK.
00:07:08
J Scoots
Yeah. With your left hand free yeah and your right hand, hmm.
00:07:13
Zuuuuu
Oh, yeah, fan fantastic sequence and fantastically to bring up that episode.
00:07:13
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:07:20
Zuuuuu
I actually I happened to watch Across the Spider-Verse last week just because I hadn't seen it in a while and I had an evening of myself.
00:07:20
J Scoots
Yeah. Oh, nice.
00:07:28
Zuuuuu
So I was like i haven't seen this since the theaters. like I need to watch it again. And it was really interesting that also in that movie, the spider was from a different universe. Like he wasn't supposed to be there.
00:07:39
Zuuuuu
So I'm just like, how does that connect to what's going on here?
00:07:41
J Scoots
Well, the fact that the spider got away, it crawled away onto somebody's backpack and we didn't get to see whose backpack that was.
00:07:50
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:07:51
J Scoots
So I'm wondering, was that, was that miles Morales or is that going to be the connective tissue to miles Morales or another web slinger?
00:07:51
Zuuuuu
Yeah, that's true.
00:07:59
J Scoots
I think Cindy moon is like a popular fan character these days as well.
00:08:04
Zuuuuu
That's going to be interesting. If it I kind of don't want it to be miles because I want that age gap, I guess, like for them to be kind of the same age and.
00:08:12
J Scoots
Sure.
00:08:13
Zuuuuu
For like him and Peter to be at the same age, I guess that makes feelings about that, huh?
00:08:15
J Scoots
It'd be a different take. It'd be a different take on it.
00:08:19
Zuuuuu
Yeah, true.
00:08:20
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:08:20
Zuuuuu
And then there was that one version of Spider-Man, it's like he actually had like six arms like his two legs. It could be that guy.
00:08:25
J Scoots
Yeah, a man's spider. Yeah.
00:08:28
Zuuuuu
And then we had the symbiote alien, which is really cool to see just a different. version of that Okay, you know the credits are just set aliens symbios I was like, I guess it's just like yeah everyone leave it to your imagination type of thing.
00:08:34
J Scoots
Yeah, i my initial takeaway, I was like, that kind of looks like Sabertooth. If Sabertooth got a a symbiote, but then I saw other people saying, Craven. I'm like, oh yeah, yeah, I could see that for sure too. But yeah. Well, sure.
00:08:52
J Scoots
For sure, for sure. But I don't want to move entirely away from what what you bring up. I mean, the influence from Spider-Verse is so clear. ah ah it's It's a different animation style, but I feel like even with like some of the the way the frames connect to each other and the stylization of the the action is clearly so evocative of across the Spider-Verse.
00:09:01
Zuuuuu
I
00:09:13
J Scoots
But then, again, with the hip hop influences and just stop the web singing, the web swinging and the way they choose to place the camera and follow him through the city just feels really, really cinematic to me.
00:09:25
Zuuuuu
Hmm. Yeah, I kind of got some a little bit of throwback code Lyoko vibes on the way that it was animated.
00:09:31
J Scoots
Oh yeah.
00:09:32
Zuuuuu
The way that was just kind of like that floating look and like everything like unnecessarily had to move.
00:09:35
J Scoots
I haven't thought about that and in so long.
00:09:37
Zuuuuu
I was like, this is interesting.
00:09:40
J Scoots
I think I watched like the first two or three episodes.
00:09:43
Zuuuuu
Yeah, i don't I don't know why that was the one that always...
00:09:43
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:09:45
Zuuuuu
I think that's just kind of like my go-to for that style. Like, whenever things move like that, my head just always goes to Kill Dioko.
00:09:47
J Scoots
Sure.
00:09:51
J Scoots
and Okay.
00:09:52
Zuuuuu
I mean, at first, because I was talking to Sarah Day about it because we were doing like the fantasy point stuff, and I was like, you can't compare the two.
00:09:54
J Scoots
Okay.
00:09:58
J Scoots
Right.
00:10:00
Zuuuuu
Like, one's, you know, this movie by these two people and it's, you know, going off of this and it's very unique. Like, how do you compare?
00:10:06
J Scoots
right
00:10:07
Zuuuuu
Like, This is trying to stick with the, you know, what if style or the 97 style or whatever Disney Plus just wants to do. It's like, yes, it's touching on comic, but it's a different type of comic book. But now that you bring it up, I guess I can see a little bit more similarities in what I was initially giving credit for.
00:10:22
J Scoots
Yeah, yeah, I mean, it's not gratuitous. I don't feel like it's like, I saw some people on social social media posts like, you know, can we have Spider-Verse? We have Spider-Verse at home.
00:10:33
J Scoots
They're like, this is Spider-Verse at home. I don't think that's fair. I think there's just, there's some influence there that I appreciate.
00:10:36
Zuuuuu
Now, yeah.
00:10:39
J Scoots
but
00:10:40
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:10:41
J Scoots
And I know we want to talk more about the narrative and the characters, and I'm i'm dying to get there too. But you mentioned, again, in passing Clone Wars.
00:10:46
Zuuuuu
Mm.
00:10:49
J Scoots
And I'm not the most versed in Clone Wars, but I have been exposed to the Bad Batch episodes. That was kind of my entry point to Bad Batch. And for anybody that's been listening to the show and listened to ah any any of our Bad Batch coverage, we know how you know how celebratory we were of the the art style.
00:11:03
J Scoots
and It's different, but the same in the sense that one of the things I loved about this art style is, like again, the trailers did not make it super obvious because everything was like zipping by so fast. But when you actually like pause or have some of the slower scenes, just like we said it about other shows, but I really feel about this one. like You could pause it at any point in time. I would take that, frame it, put it on my wall because they they do such a good job of making it look like a comic book panel. But the other thing they're doing is there are different textures happening. So what's happening on the background is different than if you look at like Peter's skin, it almost looks like it's made from like a different paper. And I just love that subtle thing. Like it is a fairly simple, simplistic art style, but doing that little, little, those little flourishes to give it some extra depth and character go a long way.
00:11:50
Zuuuuu
Yeah, like those cool covers that have like the embossing where it's like glossy on matte type of thing.
00:11:53
J Scoots
Mm hmm. Exactly. Exactly.
00:11:55
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:11:56
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:11:56
Zuuuuu
Yeah, I like the I like the comparison because it it seems like Disney Plus has their style of animation and there's just like touch ups to the theme of it where Bad Batch was like honoring the Clone Wars look, but they made it very like realistic as they could with a brushstroke type touch to it.
00:12:15
J Scoots
Sure.
00:12:17
Zuuuuu
And obviously this is kind of like the same style, but it has more of that comic book look to it.
00:12:17
J Scoots
Absolutely.
00:12:21
Zuuuuu
As you know, it's more spotty, it's more etched, it's It looks really good. It looks really good.
00:12:26
J Scoots
Yeah. I think I prefer this art style to what if.
00:12:30
J Scoots
Like what if it's novel and accomplishes what it's trying to do. It looks like the people from the movies and everything like that. And I think what works for it really well is that it has like a dreamlike quality, like with the rim lighting, it's always overexposed.
00:12:40
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:12:43
J Scoots
So you're like, it always feels a little dreamlike. So that works for what if, but I think after the three seasons, that's kind of like, I kind of wish they kind of would have gone like a Star Wars vision route with this.
00:12:53
J Scoots
So I could have seen different art styles,
00:12:55
Zuuuuu
yeah maybe some that like cater to whatever the theme of the episode was a little more yeah i could see that and another show i'm behind on and ninth jedi dude just it set the bar so high why watch more and ruin it give me more of night jedi
00:13:00
J Scoots
Sure. Yeah. Yeah. That'd be cool. Yeah. It's all good though.
00:13:17
J Scoots
Yeah, please.

Peter Parker's Quirky Personality

00:13:19
J Scoots
right. So where where do you want to start as far as characters go? I mean, obviously Peter is our main character. What do you, what do you think about this version of Peter?
00:13:28
Zuuuuu
He's fun. I mean, I think he's I think he's capturing what we love about the Tom Holland one.
00:13:29
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:13:33
Zuuuuu
Obviously, it's like a younger version of him. And he's got the the sassy corpiness to um Like he's still shy to talk to girls and stuff. But the way that he wasn't scared to step in and help somebody out even before he got his powers was really admirable.
00:13:50
Zuuuuu
And it just kind of shows a lot to his character. The love that he has for me like there was a very emotional scene in the car and everything just talking about his appreciation of everything That was just really well done and So yeah, I think I think they're doing a great job of in capturing with him you like about our our Tom Holland Peter Parker
00:14:00
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:14:11
J Scoots
Yeah, I agree. And I love the fact that it's we've seen little bits of it from the Tom Holland version, but we haven't had too many opportunities too. But this Peter is dorky. like you know He kind of like makes a fool of himself, calling himself P.D. Parker, which we saw in the trailer. but getting the context of like with when he does like the Parker out deuces and like, you know, his other interns are just like, actually, I love that whole sequence how Asha from Wakanda became increasingly concerned that he was an arsonist.
00:14:44
Zuuuuu
I just really like fire. Can we just keep that on for a little bit?
00:14:49
J Scoots
Yeah, yeah. And he I can't think of any off the top of my head, but he he also had some great quips with that ah villain butane. so
00:14:58
Zuuuuu
I can't remember any either.
00:15:00
J Scoots
I think you did something like that's a really hot take. It's time for you to cool off and did the fireworks, which you know is, you know, maybe some people roll their eyes up, but that's always been, I liked that version of Peter. I liked the version of Peter.
00:15:11
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:15:11
J Scoots
That's not afraid to make the jokes that don't always land.
00:15:14
Zuuuuu
That's what I loved about Amazing Spider-Man. Like, he didn't do a great Peter Parker, but his Spider-Man and the commentary just during everything was awesome.
00:15:17
J Scoots
Hmm.
00:15:24
J Scoots
I'd argue he he may be the Spider-Man with the best quips. He's not my favorite Spider-Man, but he might be the best quipper for sure.
00:15:27
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:15:30
Zuuuuu
Yeah, yeah, definitely.
00:15:30
J Scoots
Oh.
00:15:32
Zuuuuu
And of course, you know, Peter B. Parker does a fantastic job, too.
00:15:35
J Scoots
Ooh, yeah, yeah, yeah. that's it Yeah, the composition gets stiff there for sure.
00:15:39
Zuuuuu
but it's It's hard to beat Nick Miller for commentary.
00:15:42
J Scoots
Nick Johnson, what's his name?
00:15:44
Zuuuuu
Jake Johnson plays Nick Miller and Hamish.
00:15:46
J Scoots
Oh, that's right. i was I was like, the wires were getting crossed for me too.
00:15:48
Zuuuuu
new girl.
00:15:49
J Scoots
I was like, wait, is it? Yeah. I was like, Nick Johnson, Jake Johnson. That's fine. Good call. All right.
00:15:55
Zuuuuu
He's always, he's always Nick Miller before he's Jake Johnson. to me
00:15:59
J Scoots
Yeah.

Character Dynamics and Comic References

00:16:00
J Scoots
And how we were kind of talking at up top how like this really does, like from its inception, it was kind of built to be an origin story for our MCU version of Peter. like This really does feel like it's just like that verse, but one or two steps removed for one reason or another. And I really like the the fact that that affords the opportunity for Peter to have a new best friend.
00:16:22
J Scoots
So like, we know Harry's been his best friend and many, many iterations.
00:16:23
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:16:26
J Scoots
It was cool to see Ned given that opportunity ah in in the MCU trilogy, but yeah, I'm instantly really digging his his dynamic with Nico.
00:16:37
Zuuuuu
Yeah, he's got like a little friend group actually brewing as well, like Lonnie wanting to ask to be his partner and the past relationship of, you know, being neighbors with Pearl and stuff.
00:16:48
Zuuuuu
So the fact that there's like multiple people that he's like bouncing between and then different interactions that we get to see. And then even with the other interns, too, like he's got this whole he's got multiple circles that we get to see him flop in between, which is it's it's a nice change of pace.
00:16:54
J Scoots
Hmm.
00:17:00
J Scoots
Yeah, yeah. Now, between his friends like Nico and Lonnie and some of the other interns at Oscorp, as well as his mentor, doc Dr. Carla Connors, there are a lot of names there.
00:17:14
J Scoots
Do any of them pop or register with you as as comic book characters or potential comic book characters? Because there's a few in there for sure.
00:17:21
Zuuuuu
No, except for the Osborne's and Connor's.
00:17:26
J Scoots
Okay, well, Nico, she is Nico Minoro, who is one of the runaways. She's like the offspring of like someone that is in Dr.
00:17:32
Zuuuuu
Okay.
00:17:36
J Scoots
Strange's sphere, like one of his acolytes that that went bad for one reason or another.
00:17:41
Zuuuuu
OK, so that'll be an interesting thing that I could possibly tackle in the.
00:17:43
J Scoots
Well, it's it's again, like she feels like she's kind of like our Ned in this world. So the fact that Ned goes on that journey down down the road and you know starts to dabble in mysticism, it's kind of cool that there's that correlation there.
00:17:52
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:17:56
J Scoots
and
00:17:57
Zuuuuu
Was she in the live action?
00:18:00
J Scoots
She was in Runaways, which was on Hulu, which is the you know like the canon status is a little dubious there.
00:18:04
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:18:07
Zuuuuu
Yeah, I watched Cloak and Dagger, I never made my way around to
00:18:08
J Scoots
yeah
00:18:11
Zuuuuu
That was a
00:18:12
J Scoots
I saw Runaways season one, but i didn't I didn't stick with it after that, but I didn't i didn't watch Cloak and Dagger.
00:18:15
Zuuuuu
good one.
00:18:18
J Scoots
What was it?
00:18:20
Zuuuuu
That was actually enjoyable.
00:18:21
J Scoots
Lani. Actually, I won't tell you who Lani is, because I don't want to spoil it for you, but I think yeah a lot of Spider-Man fans know who he is just based on the name, but the fact that we got to see his home life
00:18:32
Zuuuuu
Okay.
00:18:35
Zuuuuu
There.
00:18:35
J Scoots
And what a good guy he is in some of his his family struggles there. I think they're setting him up to be a really tragic character.
00:18:44
Zuuuuu
Yeah, it was like, how are you going to ruin this for me?
00:18:44
J Scoots
And I'm worried.
00:18:46
Zuuuuu
What's going to happen to him that I'm just going to want to cry and ask God why, why, why, why him?
00:18:50
J Scoots
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The other big one though is his fellow intern, Amadeus Cho, who is the totally awesome Hulk.
00:19:03
Zuuuuu
Oh, okay.
00:19:04
J Scoots
Yeah, yeah, so.
00:19:07
Zuuuuu
Once I heard. show i was wondering if it was that other gamma scientist that uh banner works with oh okay that's cool at least i'll put that together
00:19:13
J Scoots
Well, yeah, he's he's yeah, he's the son of Helen Cho who appeared in Age of Ultron. Yeah.
00:19:23
J Scoots
Yeah, and it's I'm going to reveal myself to be the true MCU nerd that I am right now. But that's been one of those characters that they've always kind of been dancing around with. But the the continuity gets a little murky because all the way back in the Incredible Hulk 2008, Martin Starr, who would go on to appear in the Spider-Man movies as his his teacher,
00:19:43
J Scoots
Uh, he was actually in that scene. You only see him for a second, but like banners going into the lab and there's a guy that he gives pizza and the guy he's just like, Oh yeah, thanks.
00:19:49
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:19:50
J Scoots
And he has credited his Amadeus Cho, but clearly not the case.
00:19:54
Zuuuuu
Yeah, when, when we made him a draftable character in fantasy, for this year, I actually put like what everyone's first appearance was.
00:19:57
J Scoots
Oh, okay. Yeah.
00:20:05
Zuuuuu
So on the roster, you can see that his first appearance was incredible Hulk.
00:20:09
J Scoots
Nice. I dig it. I dig it.

Series Length and Viewer Engagement

00:20:13
Zuuuuu
Yeah, it's a That's cool that there's a lot of characters that are gonna have, I guess, a lot of character growth. I mean, do we know how long the series is supposed to be?
00:20:23
J Scoots
I think it's already been renewed. I think, I wanna say three seasons, don't quote me on it, but three seasons is what's kinda coming to mind, so I think it, oh yeah, this one's gonna be 10 episodes.
00:20:31
Zuuuuu
I guess, do we know how long the season's gonna be?
00:20:37
Zuuuuu
Okay, that tracks.
00:20:37
J Scoots
we We got the first two this time, they're gonna do three next week, three the following week, and then the final two. So yeah, it'll be 10 episodes across four weeks.
00:20:50
Zuuuuu
Interesting.
00:20:51
J Scoots
Yeah, very interesting strategy.
00:20:52
Zuuuuu
I like that.
00:20:53
J Scoots
Yeah, i don't i don't I'm not gonna knock it. i'm I'm down for them experimenting, try something different, yeah.
00:20:56
Zuuuuu
It makes you.
00:21:00
Zuuuuu
Yeah, because they did a good job with the cliffhangers. It's a decent amount of actions. you I was wondering, like, why not just have like one hour episodes or something, but I guess it's a nice way to make it digestible.
00:21:09
J Scoots
I like breaking it up and I do think releasing the first two together was wise because as much as I like the premiere,
00:21:16
Zuuuuu
Mm hmm.
00:21:17
J Scoots
I was itching for a little bit more, especially with that that cliffhanger, like seeing you know Norman there.
00:21:20
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:21:23
J Scoots
So yeah, I think it's a good strategy. It'll be interesting to have to see how it plays in the long run and what kind of conversation there is around this one, because you know again, we are apologists for animation here, but we acknowledge not everybody is down for animation.
00:21:37
J Scoots
And even with that, I feel like yeah We both kind of admitted it. I feel like this show is just low on people's radar. So with the positive reception, because I am seeing a lot of positive reception, I'm hoping that's enough to kind of drive the awareness and the conversation and see if the people turn out in droves over the next few weeks to to show.
00:21:55
J Scoots
Because I mean, I felt i felt obligated. like I don't post on social media too, too often. But I had to say, had to say like do not sleep on this show.
00:22:00
Zuuuuu
I saw.
00:22:03
J Scoots
Go so check this show out. Let's make sure it gets the viewership that it's supposed to.
00:22:08
Zuuuuu
Yeah, strain a pan of chat on Facebook for anybody that wants to.
00:22:11
J Scoots
That's right.
00:22:12
Zuuuuu
having a conversation with Scoots on that. Encourage him to want to say things like that more. um Yeah, I'll call my shot on that and say that it's gonna be after the season is over.
00:22:23
Zuuuuu
I think that's when big MCU fans are gonna be talking about it.
00:22:27
J Scoots
Yeah, for sure.
00:22:27
Zuuuuu
Captain America will be out at that point. So there's gonna be more MCU chatter. There's gonna be more hunger for more stuff, assuming it's you know the MCU standard. And I think that's what's gonna be like You know people waiting at line of grab power.
00:22:39
Zuuuuu
Oh, did you see that spider-man show yet? Yeah, all the episodes are out I think I think around Captain America time was what's really gonna push people to want to come in and start watching that or maybe as they're doing their Captain America rewatches on Disney Plus I'll see it as an option, but i'm I'm sensing more towards end of season than People really pushing it from the first two episodes Yeah
00:22:43
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:22:52
J Scoots
Let's hope so. Yeah, that's fine. As long as people watch it, however you want to do it, just watch it.
00:23:05
Zuuuuu
Watch it and let us know what you think of it. Oh my God, my voice is done for the day.
00:23:08
J Scoots
I thought you were doing a voice.
00:23:09
Zuuuuu
Excuse me. Good God.
00:23:09
J Scoots
I thought you were doing an impression there for a second.
00:23:12
Zuuuuu
No.
00:23:15
J Scoots
You all right?
00:23:16
Zuuuuu
Yeah, I guess.
00:23:19
Zuuuuu
Four or four five solid weeks of Commander's football has just like destroyed my voice.
00:23:22
J Scoots
Oh, yeah.
00:23:25
Zuuuuu
And yeah, I mean, I don't have to worry about it anymore, but it still hasn't fully recovered yet.
00:23:26
J Scoots
And you you just.
00:23:30
J Scoots
Oh, sure. Sure.
00:23:31
Zuuuuu
And this is my second podcast back to back today after working all day too.
00:23:33
J Scoots
I was going to bring that up. Yeah. Yeah. You're you're a trooper for that one. All right. Uh, was there anything else you wanted to bring up about your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man or can we move on to some DC?
00:23:45
Zuuuuu
When they were doing the live stream went in the alley scene, there was one part that said, you got beat up by a guy wearing hockey pads and I lost it.
00:23:48
J Scoots
Mm-hmm.
00:23:55
J Scoots
Nice.
00:23:56
Zuuuuu
I was laughing so hard at that from the Dark Knight reference.
00:23:57
J Scoots
Nice.
00:24:00
J Scoots
Oh yeah, yeah, that's great. Yeah, I'm gonna have to go back and like try to zoom in on some of those comments because I can't remember off any off the top of my head, but i I do remember some being particularly funny.
00:24:11
J Scoots
I'm actually glad you bring that scene up because as much as I was loving the show up until that point, there was a moment when those, you know there's they were like teens, but like they were like bloodthirsty.
00:24:22
J Scoots
like They wanted to, like they seemed like they wanted to kill Harry. like It was...
00:24:25
Zuuuuu
I was trying to convince myself it was like tracksuit mafia or something.
00:24:28
J Scoots
Oh, okay.
00:24:29
Zuuuuu
It's just the way that one dude was dressed.
00:24:31
J Scoots
I like that. I actually really like that. I hope he is like a a tracksuit mafia recruit. And like, that's why he was so cold blooded. But I was like, if these are high school kids, like I was expecting when Harry tried to jump over the car and it was like landed himself in traffic, I thought they were all going to be like horrified and be thankful that Spider-Man saved him But no, they like like come after him with bricks and pipes.
00:24:50
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:24:52
J Scoots
So there was some chatter when the trailer came out. They're like, ooh, it looks like Spider-Man is perpetrating some like intense violence against people his own age. I'm like, no, they deserve this.
00:25:03
Zuuuuu
Yeah. I mean, it was also like, did they know he was Harry and that's why they were pushing him so much or like.
00:25:10
J Scoots
Yeah, I think he's, yeah, based on what we saw with Peter's reaction to Norman.
00:25:11
Zuuuuu
I don't know.
00:25:17
J Scoots
And then I think there was a sequence where somebody was flipping on the TV and it was clear that like Harry was like on something like a red carpet or like TMZ or some kind of tabloid.
00:25:27
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:25:27
J Scoots
So I do think he's like, has that level of recognition, recognition.
00:25:32
Zuuuuu
That tracks. He was like, I don't carry cash on me, but I can Venmo you right now.
00:25:34
J Scoots
But it didn't seem like Peter. It didn't seem like Peter recognized him though.
00:25:40
Zuuuuu
Yeah, I don't know if he was maybe lost from the moment or.
00:25:44
J Scoots
Yeah, huh.
00:25:46
Zuuuuu
Yeah, I know.
00:25:46
J Scoots
Actually, it's probably a good thing because if they are going to have a friendship, that's probably something he would value as someone that doesn't associate him with the the limelight like that.
00:25:51
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:25:54
Zuuuuu
And how conflicted because he like flipped out when he saw Norman.
00:25:54
J Scoots
But.
00:25:59
J Scoots
Mm hmm.
00:26:00
Zuuuuu
and recognize him instantly.
00:26:02
J Scoots
Mm hmm.
00:26:02
Zuuuuu
Yeah, that'll that'll be interesting to see how that goes forward.
00:26:05
J Scoots
Yeah, yeah.
00:26:06
Zuuuuu
But maybe it was just two really malicious kids that were messing with the wrong guy.
00:26:14
Zuuuuu
But the fact that he was like, ah let me tell you what a concussion feels like, and I was like, the brick would have done that. I do not think you could punch harder than you can throw a brick at someone's head.
00:26:24
J Scoots
I hope not.
00:26:25
Zuuuuu
two And you saw that didn't work.
00:26:28
J Scoots
Right.
00:26:31
Zuuuuu
it's but's It's not Spider-Guy, it's Spider-Man, Spider-Man.
00:26:32
J Scoots
Goons.
00:26:36
Zuuuuu
I get a free pizza?
00:26:41
Zuuuuu
I think that's all the lines I got now. I'm sure I'll remember more as soon as we wrap up.
00:26:44
J Scoots
Oh, yeah, for sure. All right. Shall we talk about creature commandos?
00:26:51
Zuuuuu
Yeah, let's flip over to the DC side of things.
00:26:53
J Scoots
Cool, cool. So I think the last time we talked, uh, we had seen through episode four, correct?
00:27:00
Zuuuuu
yep
00:27:01
J Scoots
Okay. So I think, I think when we talked about it, I thought we had four more to go because I did not realize that it was seven episodes until it was like the last week.
00:27:10
Zuuuuu
and Yeah.
00:27:11
J Scoots
I was, I became very sad that that was going to be robbed of one last week of creature commandos.
00:27:16
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:27:17
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:27:18
Zuuuuu
I mean, he used to have plenty to be sad about because spoilers for Creature Commando like killed off so And there's so much that they complain about like these, you know, comic book and Disney properties where it's like, it's it's one of the reasons I fell out of X-Men 97 is because it felt like there was no stakes.
00:27:21
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:27:36
Zuuuuu
It's like, they're dead. They're not dead. They lost their powers. They had their powers.
00:27:38
J Scoots
Hmm.
00:27:39
Zuuuuu
They're hurt. They're okay. And now it's like, oh man, they're actually dead? What do you mean you actually killed them off? What do you mean if we have a season 2 it's going to be a different team?
00:27:44
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:27:47
Zuuuuu
What the heck? It's like you gave me these deep backstories like James Scottie did a fantastic job at making me connected to every single one of these people and you killed half of them?
00:27:57
Zuuuuu
What the heck? but
00:27:59
J Scoots
Yeah. And the Nina one just hurts so bad because her death was just so unnecessary.
00:28:02
Zuuuuu
There's so many!
00:28:06
J Scoots
Like as we saw the backstories for all these people, like they all, they were victims, but they had all done things to earn their place on the creature commandos and their place within Belle Reeve and Nina Hatton.
00:28:18
J Scoots
She'd never hurt anybody.
00:28:19
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:28:19
J Scoots
She was just always
00:28:21
Zuuuuu
Scene of the monster.
00:28:21
J Scoots
the victim of you know scrutiny and persecution and just harassment. And it was just tragic to see her go through that the whole time you're hoping that she'll get some glimmer of hope, some glimmer of redemption, some form of family.
00:28:37
J Scoots
And no, she gets killed in cold blood for nothing.
00:28:38
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:28:41
Zuuuuu
And we had to see it for so long, too.
00:28:43
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:28:43
Zuuuuu
It was just... Everything about that that reinvasion was like I don't like this like it was like it was obviously really well done But it's just like I don't like this
00:28:54
J Scoots
Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. What'd you think about Dr. Phosphorus' backstory? Because that was our first look at the much-discussed Batman who made a little cameo there.
00:29:05
Zuuuuu
Yeah, that was another one where it was just like, man, he did not deserve to be here. Like, this is really rough for him. And this is such a bad story. Like all these guys were just effed so hard on their lives. But again, just really well done it. Like the fact that you have to rank everyone's tragedy stories is really impressive. But it's it just stands to you know give a taste of possibly what this DC universe could be like.
00:29:31
J Scoots
Yeah, yeah. And you're right. Yeah, Dr. Phosphorus, his story was so, so tragic. But it worked for me. It made sense that like that he's been a clown this whole time, like what drove him.
00:29:42
J Scoots
And he's not I mean, he's not the joker when I say a clown, but he's clearly very sadistic and sardonic and sarcastic.
00:29:43
Zuuuuu
Mmhmm.
00:29:49
J Scoots
So to get to see what drove him to that was was riveting.
00:29:53
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:29:54
J Scoots
and So be a little on the lighter side. One of the things I appreciated about is his backstory, the montage when he finally did embrace the life of crime after inheriting that crime family is it always stood out to me in episode one when they're in public stand and they just kind of have a moments of reprieve somewhere in the background. You see Dr. Phosphorus doing like a synchronized dance with some of the paul Polokstan soldiers and it seems like that's just something he likes to do because when he's a crime boss, it's something he mandates.
00:30:17
Zuuuuu
yeah
00:30:24
J Scoots
They have to like line dance with him in synchronization.
00:30:28
Zuuuuu
Yes, that was that was a very interesting bit.
00:30:32
J Scoots
I love stupid things like that.
00:30:37
Zuuuuu
Yeah, man, I was I was really happy with that. I mean, I wasn't happy with the outcome, but overall, I was very, very happy with that show.
00:30:42
J Scoots
Hmm.
00:30:45
J Scoots
Yeah, yeah. And you talked about i mean characters getting killed off. And I mean, one of those characters is the princess, obviously. But that needed to happen. After the loss we had with Nina, there was nothing more satisfying than and having that happen.
00:30:54
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:31:00
Zuuuuu
Yeah, it was just one of those things. It's like, man, what did we get out of this? Like, what was all of this for?
00:31:04
J Scoots
Yeah. Well, I think it clearly probably sets up
00:31:10
J Scoots
the United States to probably be in some kind of conflict with Paul Extan.
00:31:14
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:31:14
J Scoots
So I wonder if that'll be teased in Superman, even if it's just like a scene where he goes to to that country and it's just mentioned in passing or something like that. But we do have a season two.
00:31:22
Zuuuuu
Sounds like I'm confused. So this is connected?
00:31:25
J Scoots
What's up?
00:31:25
Zuuuuu
All this is connected?
00:31:27
J Scoots
Apparently that's, yeah, it's still dubious, but you know, if we're going to take James Gunn as at gospel, his word is gospel. Yeah. Cause I go back to season four, we talked about, or not season four, episode four, we talked about it on the last cast.
00:31:42
J Scoots
You did have that vision where you saw, it was clearly the the corn sweat version of, of Superman on the crucifix there.
00:31:47
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:31:48
J Scoots
So yeah. Yeah.
00:31:52
Zuuuuu
Is this like the, is this like their Daredevil where it's like they just, they have stuff that works and they can figure out ways to kind of put it back into everything, but.
00:31:52
J Scoots
Yep.
00:32:01
J Scoots
Yeah, I think so.
00:32:03
Zuuuuu
Okay. It's just weird because like they found ways to connect it to the David Ayer Suicide Squad. So they're going that far but back with it.
00:32:16
J Scoots
Be a little more specific.
00:32:18
Zuuuuu
because James Gunn's live action Suicide Squad was a sequel to that.
00:32:22
J Scoots
Oh, it's connected to that one. Okay, okay, yeah.
00:32:24
Zuuuuu
And then this anime, that's what's confusing me.
00:32:27
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:32:27
Zuuuuu
And then this animation is a sequel to James Gunn's live action. So that's where I'm like, am I just thinking too much into it or?
00:32:37
J Scoots
Uh, I'm not going to give you crap for thinking too much into it because it's totally reasonable, but ultimately yes, that's what it comes down to.
00:32:41
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:32:43
J Scoots
And it's like, I don't begrudge you at all if you take issue with it, but I just somewhere down the line, I was just able to like compartmentalize and say, and honestly, it's because it's probably because I hate that 2016 movie as much as I do.
00:32:56
J Scoots
It's just like, I do not want that.
00:32:57
Zuuuuu
yeah
00:32:58
J Scoots
like And I, love and I love James Gunn version of the Suicide Squad so much, even though it was the same Amanda Waller and you had, uh,
00:33:01
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:33:06
J Scoots
Joel Kinnaman returning and even, uh, Margot Robbie is Harley Quinn and somehow it works.
00:33:10
Zuuuuu
Mm hmm.
00:33:11
J Scoots
So yeah.
00:33:13
Zuuuuu
Yeah, let me like, I'm not gonna.
00:33:16
Zuuuuu
I guess I'm not going to hold it against them in any way if they find a way to connect it.
00:33:20
J Scoots
right.
00:33:22
Zuuuuu
It's just something I've thought about.
00:33:24
J Scoots
Yeah. And yeah.
00:33:25
Zuuuuu
And if they retcon it, or if they're just like, don't worry about it it. Like what we want to work for this is work for it. They'd be like, cool, whatever. But for now I'm just in that. Hmm. I'm intrigued with where this is going.
00:33:35
J Scoots
Yeah, if it means we get to keep John Cena's peacemaker around, I think that's the the biggest selling point for me.
00:33:42
Zuuuuu
Which I still haven't seen.
00:33:43
J Scoots
So, but yeah, I guess I mentioned, you know, maybe Paul Eckstine will be a factor in Superman, but there also exists the possibility and we know a season two is on the way. So maybe they don't even touch it. They just wait for that in season two.
00:33:56
Zuuuuu
yeah
00:33:57
J Scoots
One of the things that we haven't touched on that I absolutely loved about the finale though, and I kind of almost predicted it.
00:34:02
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:34:03
J Scoots
It didn't go down exactly like that, but the fact that Frankenstein had been making this long journey to reunite with the bride for as long as he had, and it was over so quickly. It was so good.
00:34:14
Zuuuuu
like How are we killing all these people off? here really Oh, that's right.
00:34:17
J Scoots
Oh, he's not dead. He had a little, he had a post credits stinger with the the old lady.
00:34:20
Zuuuuu
They didn't have the
00:34:24
Zuuuuu
That's right, that's right.
00:34:25
J Scoots
Yeah. Yeah.
00:34:26
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:34:27
J Scoots
So, I mean, there are, there are a few characters that seem like they're certainly like sidelines, like Rick Flag senior, but he's not dead. Clayface is the one that I'm curious about. I was like, surely Clayface isn't dead, but they went back to that crime scene like days later and Clayface is still spewed all over the place.
00:34:44
Zuuuuu
He's playing dead.
00:34:44
J Scoots
So he might be dead. There might there might be multiple versions of Clayface.
00:34:50
Zuuuuu
It's like his brain is in one part of that gulp and they're just waiting for someone to like pile it together so like the nerves connect or something.
00:34:53
J Scoots
Oh, I like that. I like that. That's a good theory.
00:34:58
Zuuuuu
That'll be my head cannon for it.
00:34:58
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:35:00
Zuuuuu
He's just sitting there like, guys, someone move move me.
00:35:02
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:35:04
Zuuuuu
It's like when the robot loses its head and like the body is just kind of like moving around.
00:35:05
J Scoots
yeah
00:35:09
J Scoots
Yeah. Right. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. It wasn't until his medulla unblancata was connected. Sorry. That was a water boy reference.
00:35:19
Zuuuuu
Gotcha.
00:35:21
J Scoots
All right.
00:35:22
Zuuuuu
Bender, that's what I was thinking of. He's just having a bender moment.
00:35:25
J Scoots
Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:35:26
Zuuuuu
Drama.
00:35:28
J Scoots
Bite my shiny metal. I'll leave it at that.
00:35:33
Zuuuuu
Bite my mushy clay.
00:35:38
J Scoots
Anything else on Creature Commandos?
00:35:42
Zuuuuu
No, I was really happy with it and I hope we get more, whether it's that dark or not, I just hope we get more DC animation.
00:35:48
J Scoots
Oh yeah, me too.
00:35:50
Zuuuuu
Because I just I love that style.
00:35:52
J Scoots
Yeah, me too.
00:35:55
J Scoots
Even the gore, especially the gore.
00:35:56
Zuuuuu
Oh, yeah, can't get enough the gore.
00:36:00
J Scoots
Well, speaking of gore, we'll probably wrap up in the next few minutes here, but as we're just kind of, you know, we're not doing as episodes as frequently these days, so kind of use the opportunity to check in a little bit.
00:36:00
Zuuuuu
We are pro gore.
00:36:12
J Scoots
What are some other things you've been watching?
00:36:14
Zuuuuu
so I finished Arkane season two and just an incredibly beautiful show.
00:36:16
J Scoots
Mm hmm.
00:36:19
Zuuuuu
There was a part of me that was bummed that it was only going to be two seasons. And there was without, you know, spoiling anything, there was just so much, of attention that was being given to other characters and like all the storylines started to brain shot a little too much for my liking.
00:36:36
J Scoots
Mm hmm.
00:36:38
Zuuuuu
So then I got to the point where I was like, okay, season, or two seasons was like perfect for this. You really don't need to give me more than that. But just the, it's just fricking cinematic masterpiece, dude.
00:36:48
Zuuuuu
Like just to build up to some of the themes and how they incorporate the music. And it's, it's just awesome. Absolutely awesome.
00:36:58
J Scoots
Yeah, that's the reminder I need to go back and watch season two because with the Netflix price hike, I'm more tempted than ever to to drop Netflix because I do like it.
00:37:05
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:37:09
J Scoots
It's got some great things, but it's just the streaming service that I've accessed the least often. and And that's been the case for years. What you got?
00:37:16
Zuuuuu
You can always get Blu-rays.
00:37:18
J Scoots
Yeah, yeah, yeah definitely.
00:37:19
Zuuuuu
Or buy like digital copies or something.
00:37:20
J Scoots
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. If push comes to shove, I certainly will. Uh, okay. And then, uh, a couple of enemies. I know you've started, I myself have started, uh, solo leveling, but I've only done the first episode thus far.
00:37:35
J Scoots
And that was a ah ah recommendation from Jeff Randall. So I think, uh,
00:37:40
Zuuuuu
Yeah, that's one that me and BBK have had on our list for a while because that was the one that I was going to start.
00:37:44
J Scoots
okay. Mm-hmm.
00:37:46
Zuuuuu
And then he started Kaiju number eight instead. So I was like, you jerk.
00:37:49
J Scoots
Hmm.
00:37:50
Zuuuuu
So then I had to go watch that. And then when I got to shock with something else, that's when he started so lovely. I was like, can you please collaborate with me more on our list? Like, stop flipping on the ones that we said we were going to say you said we're going to do this.
00:38:02
Zuuuuu
Why did you go over here? yeah Um, so I finally started solo leveling because again just reaction made me want to do it in season two has been out They even did like the demon slayer thing where they played like the first few episodes in theaters uh, so the fact that the popularity has you know grown that much definitely made me want to uh Watch it sooner than later and because we actually had snow days last week.
00:38:12
J Scoots
Hm. Oh yeah, yeah.
00:38:23
Zuuuuu
So it helped Uh, and during that snow day me and my roommate binged all of dan to dan and oh my god turbo granny is all I will say but if you thought
00:38:25
J Scoots
Nah.
00:38:28
J Scoots
nice Nice. Yeah.
00:38:33
Zuuuuu
If you thought Creature Commando was rated R, holy crap, this is what it is.
00:38:38
J Scoots
Yeah, I've only watched the intro to Dan Da Dan, but that's the one like, I'm liking solo leveling, but that's the one that I'm like, ooh, this has got the gore plus the stylization that I like so much.
00:38:41
Zuuuuu
It's a bop.
00:38:47
J Scoots
It looks wild.
00:38:49
Zuuuuu
Yeah, when you can't decide between aliens and ghosts, so you mix them together, it's...
00:38:49
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:38:54
J Scoots
Ooh, I like it.
00:38:56
Zuuuuu
It's something.
00:38:58
J Scoots
Kind of like Dead Space a little bit. They were played.
00:39:03
Zuuuuu
Hmm.
00:39:04
J Scoots
I played the remake over the summer and that kind of kick-started a whole survival horror game, I wouldn't say marathon, but like most of the games I played were of that ilk.
00:39:06
Zuuuuu
All right.
00:39:17
J Scoots
And it's funny because I've always been a fan of horror movies, but the,
00:39:23
J Scoots
It didn't translate to games for me for the longest time, because I remember playing Ocarina time when I was a kid. and the Did you ever play that one? I know, I'm a little...
00:39:32
Zuuuuu
I just haven't played a single Zelda game.
00:39:34
J Scoots
What? and Not a single one? shit.
00:39:35
Zuuuuu
Not a single one.
00:39:37
J Scoots
All right. So this is lost on you, but I'm sure there are some listeners that will be able to relate with me. Uh, there are enemy types called the wall masters and basically you enter a room and then slowly, but surely a shadow will start to envelop your character. And then out of nowhere, a hand just drops down and grabs you and takes you all the way to the beginning of the temple. And as like an eight, nine year old, 10 year old,
00:40:02
J Scoots
a Bear in mind, graphics were not as good back in those days, but I was afraid to go to the bathroom. I would have to look up at the ceiling to make sure there wasn't a wall master about to drop down and get me.
00:40:08
Zuuuuu
nightmare fuel just walk around with like a flashlight with no shadows anywhere that's funny
00:40:14
J Scoots
Pretty much. pretty much
00:40:19
J Scoots
yeah oh I did watch the first couple of episodes of Spy Family, season two. Yeah.
00:40:28
Zuuuuu
Okay, as I've seen the first two.
00:40:28
J Scoots
yeah
00:40:29
Zuuuuu
I don't know what made me drop off on it, but was Bond was scared of the mom's food and the mom's cooking?
00:40:33
J Scoots
Oh, there's a lot of stuff to watch.
00:40:44
J Scoots
was i think I think that might have been one of the many episodes. I think they did like a couple of like shorter, so some of them are like a full 20 minutes and then some of them are 15.
00:40:51
Zuuuuu
Maybe that's what I saw then.
00:40:52
J Scoots
I think that was one of the 15 minute ones, yeah.
00:40:55
Zuuuuu
gachat Gotcha.
00:40:56
J Scoots
It was because yeah because they did when you first started saying it, they did the episode of Bond Man, where it was basically you were just watching an episode of Bond Man with Anya.
00:41:05
Zuuuuu
I wonder if I saw that.
00:41:05
J Scoots
and i Okay, yeah, I think they did those two next to each other because at the end of it, like Lloyd's just like, ugh, this guy's terrible.
00:41:15
Zuuuuu
Yeah man, now that football is over I can and get time back to watching shows.
00:41:20
J Scoots
Foosball. Nope, nope. Hopefully we get some good trailers.
00:41:29
Zuuuuu
We'll find out as a we sit down for Captain America soon. Did you get your tickets?
00:41:35
J Scoots
Oh yeah. I've had my ticket since day one.
00:41:35
Zuuuuu
Nice. Yeah, the second that that popped up, I'm like, me, me, me.
00:41:40
J Scoots
o Yeah.
00:41:40
Zuuuuu
I always get eight tickets and get everyone to Venmo me later.
00:41:44
J Scoots
I'll see it Thursday night and then I'll probably want to see it once more before the opening weekend it is over. Maybe Saturday, and more likely Sunday.
00:41:54
Zuuuuu
Gotcha. Probably get a watch in for fantasy heroes. and Go meet up with Saturday and double-check the points, because that'll just be too like locked into actually watching the movie the first time.
00:42:04
J Scoots
Oh, yeah. You gotta, you gotta to do that for yourself.
00:42:07
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:42:08
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:42:08
Zuuuuu
It was funny when we watched Deadpool and Wolverine for the second time, because we actually had the theater to ourselves. So we just like kicked up our feet and had our notebooks.
00:42:14
J Scoots
Wow.
00:42:15
Zuuuuu
You're like, all right, there's that person. and There's that thing. and Get points for this. and Let's get that. up So it's just like, if we could have that situation again, that'd be fantastic.
00:42:23
J Scoots
This is going to sound so contrived and so petty of me, but I envy you for that experience because one of my bucket list items has been to have a theater to myself, just to like go to a movie and just have nobody else show up.
00:42:34
Zuuuuu
Mm.
00:42:36
J Scoots
But I live in California and the likelihood of that happening. There's so many times I thought it was going to happen. Like I went to see the Benedict Cumberbatch version of The Grinch at like 10 o'clock at night.
00:42:42
Zuuuuu
yeah
00:42:47
J Scoots
like oh oh yeah And i like five minutes before the movie starts, a family rolls in.
00:42:53
Zuuuuu
No.
00:42:55
J Scoots
And then, yeah, I won't go into all the specifics, but it's been like, I've come so close so many times that one person just has to come in for one reason or another. i'm Like, ah you don't realize how you're ruining this for me.
00:43:03
Zuuuuu
One of my favorite experiences was Boy and the Heron.
00:43:08
J Scoots
Okay.
00:43:08
Zuuuuu
So there was one to say six or seven of us that were going and we switched to the 11 o'clock showing because that was the only one that worked for one of my friends.
00:43:18
J Scoots
Okay.
00:43:18
Zuuuuu
And then he bailed at the last minute.
00:43:20
J Scoots
Hmm.
00:43:21
Zuuuuu
so we were like, man, like we wanted to like watch this earlier and get to bed on time. Now it's like 11 o'clock.
00:43:26
J Scoots
Right.
00:43:27
Zuuuuu
We ended up having the theater to ourselves. So we were just like, you know, making comments and cracking jokes and just having a good time. And we have, I have this tradition since college of every time I go to the movies, I take a selfie in front of the movie poster, uh, with everybody I was there with.
00:43:33
J Scoots
Nice.
00:43:39
J Scoots
Oh yeah. Yeah, I noticed you did that. Yeah.
00:43:41
Zuuuuu
And there was no boring The Heron poster. So we waited for the Studio Ghibli title screen to come up.
00:43:49
J Scoots
Oh, cool.
00:43:49
Zuuuuu
So we did a couple of practice shots to make sure I could like get the you know camera settings and all that straight because it adjusts. So we like we were like, hit our cues and everything.
00:43:56
J Scoots
Yeah.
00:43:58
Zuuuuu
And as soon as it popped up, like I ran after the third row. No, I was already sitting in the third row. So I just turned around and took the picture with everybody. I was like, cool. There's our there's our poster shot.
00:44:07
J Scoots
Right on, right on. Glad you got to do that. right. Uh, what are you looking forward to? What's on your radar? I mean, obviously you're going to continue your solo leveling watch.
00:44:18
J Scoots
it It sounds like anything else on your radar.
00:44:20
Zuuuuu
but Yes, definitely season 2 of that. he put me on the spot. I can't really even think of anything right now.
00:44:26
J Scoots
I'm just, yeah that's all right. That's all right. Yeah. If you don't, if nothing comes to mind, nothing comes to mind. I'm trying to think.
00:44:32
Zuuuuu
Yeah, that's coming to mind.
00:44:33
J Scoots
I'm trying to think for myself. I mean, obviously I want to continue to watch my friendly neighborhood spy. Oh, invincible season three. Uh, do you see the voice cast for that?
00:44:40
Zuuuuu
Oh, I don't know what was on the radar. Uh-uh.
00:44:43
J Scoots
The, once again, they're getting a stacked voice cast just off the top of my head. Simu Liu, Jolo Meridwainio, who was in blue beetle, Aaron Paul.
00:44:48
Zuuuuu
nice Nice. Okay.
00:44:55
J Scoots
So I said it on multiverse news, but I bet you know some of these guys are surprised that they're coming to play in the world of Invincible before they get to play in the comic book worlds that they started in.
00:45:07
Zuuuuu
That's funny.
00:45:07
J Scoots
yeah ye yeah All right, anything else?
00:45:09
Zuuuuu
Poor Similo, put him back in marble.
00:45:16
Zuuuuu
I really hate that I can't think of anything I'm excited for. It's okay. My brain just needs a transition.
00:45:23
J Scoots
No worries. No worries.
00:45:25
Zuuuuu
Yeah.
00:45:25
J Scoots
All right. Well, on that note, we're probably going to start to mosey on out of here. What do you want to let the people know about?
00:45:31
Zuuuuu
Yeah. The last couple of, I mean, my recurring appearance on three, two, three with Reed Murphy is going to start to dwindle down after the Superbowl. So yeah, just catch me while i'm I'm sure I'll come back for pop culture stuff as that hops up. but Aside from that, yeah, check out Upright Exposures on Instagram. That's my business shooting real estate photography. It's obviously getting followers and likes and stuff. is It is a huge help and it doesn't cost anyone anything to help a brother out. So check that out.
00:46:00
J Scoots
do it to it. As for me, you can check me out on multiverse news. That's where we talk about the latest and greatest in the world of TV and movie news for our favorite fictional universes. And then I've been on always watching the show where we talk about whatever geeky and genre television shows we want to. I've been kind of a mainstay there for the last few weeks between silo season two and now severance season two, which I got to say, if you're not watching,
00:46:27
J Scoots
Drop everything. I mean, finish this podcast and then, and then go watch severance seasoned.
00:46:30
Zuuuuu
I've watched half of the second episode.
00:46:34
J Scoots
How could you stop at half?
00:46:36
Zuuuuu
Work.
00:46:37
J Scoots
Okay. Fair enough. If only you could sever yourself so that you would, you didn't have to worry about it.
00:46:41
Zuuuuu
Share it. No, I would have to clone myself with how spontaneous work is.
00:46:44
J Scoots
And then.
00:46:47
J Scoots
Yeah. Yeah. And then not to be too long winded with my plugs, but, uh, we did have the Oscar nominations recently announced. So on benders assemble, we will, uh, we're very quickly trying to scramble to, to cover those best picture nominations.
00:47:01
J Scoots
So look forward to that on the benders assemble fee.
00:47:05
Zuuuuu
Cool.
00:47:06
J Scoots
All righty. That'll do it. Thank you for tuning in. That's T double O N I N.
00:47:11
Zuuuuu
And as always, stay well.
