00:00:01
zuuuuu
On another exciting episode of the Animation Deliberation podcast, we bring our merry gang back together, known as Strand Pandana, to talk about Vox Machina, Season 3, Episodes 1-6. Right after these ads, we have no control over.
00:00:13
Scotty
Singeth along, if thou knowest the words. ah One, two, three, it's time for animation deliberation. A conversation and a celebration of our favorite action animated series. re Yeah.
Meet the Hosts and Guest
00:00:32
zuuuuu
Welcome back to another episode of Animation de Liberation, the podcast where we take action animation to cartoon seriously, but not too seriously.
00:00:32
Jeff Randle
of a Vox Machina-tion.
00:00:38
zuuuuu
We're your hosts, I'm Zuhra Ali.
00:00:40
Scotty
My name's Jay Scotty St. Clair.
00:00:41
zuuuuu
And we have a very critical guest that we were happy could roll in with
Character Impressions and Banter
00:00:45
zuuuuu
us tonight. Welcome, Jeff Randall. Thanks for being here.
00:00:48
Jeff Randle
This friggin' guy.
00:00:50
Jeff Randle
This friggin' guy with the puns.
00:00:51
zuuuuu
I had to get all of them out early today.
00:00:57
Scotty
Is your last name Derolo because you're coming out with guns blazing, my guy.
00:00:57
zuuuuu
Then they happened again.
00:01:03
zuuuuu
That was my Scanlan impression.
00:01:05
Scotty
Oh yeah, yeah, it was a good scaling. Yeah, good falsetto.
Recap of Seasons 1 and 2
00:01:10
zuuuuu
Yeah, I was catching up with y'all's episode that you did, recapping seasons one and two for the listeners that haven't caught that yet.
00:01:18
zuuuuu
And I was like, Ooh, I gotta try it. I gotta try it this time.
00:01:24
Jeff Randle
Yep, yep. That, oh man, I look back on that episode that we did as, but like fondly, chaos. Chaos, chaotic, chaotic.
00:01:36
Jeff Randle
It's chaotic neutral, right?
00:01:37
Scotty
Yeah, just like Vox Machina, yeah.
00:01:40
Jeff Randle
Right. Now that, that was, that was a fun conversation that took so freaking many turns, you know, like the campaign did. But I'm just.
00:01:53
zuuuuu
So I'm doing my first, like I've i've basically binged all of season two in the last week or so, texting Jeff during and after every episode.
00:02:04
zuuuuu
And I do have to say that I have listened to the song for Aziza every day since I heard it for the first time. because it was just so incredible and so beautiful and I was like why is it so short I need a longer version of the song right now so just to kick things off oh my god are the scores and the music and the intensity and all that stuff just so incredibly done especially when they bring the metal out oh my god does it get my adrenaline pumping
Season 3 Intro and Music
00:02:30
zuuuuu
like I'm ready to go work out to just have with the stuff that Fox Fox plays
00:02:35
Scotty
Well, speaking of which, since we're talking about season three now, this is the first time across the ah ah seasons that we've got so far that we have a new intro and I love the new intro and you talking about like introducing some of that metal and kind of that electric guitar. I love the buildup. It's just a perfect intro. You start, you start with these kind of like soft, quiet, quieter moments and melodies. And then it just builds up to like, you know, full adrenaline, bad-ass scene, Grog come slamming in the whole team working together. It's, it's a hell of an intro. I really dig it.
00:03:05
Jeff Randle
Hell of an intro?
00:03:08
zuuuuu
Yeah, when it started off, I was like, oh, new intro, why is it softer? Why are we going this way? Okay, yeah, no, this is good.
00:03:15
zuuuuu
What am I talking about? Shut up, Zoom.
00:03:20
Jeff Randle
I mean, it's no pull on my beads of love, but what can be?
Favorite Characters Debate
00:03:26
Scotty
well I know I know it said it since we're talking about season three, but while we are still kind of in zoos corner territory, I am curious since I, we have not, you know, communicated after you watched every episode. I know Jeff's favorite character. I know my favorite characters, but I'm curious, uh, who are, who's your favorite character or who are some of your favorites? Because I know it's, it's a difficult choice with this, uh, great cast.
00:03:50
zuuuuu
All right, so this is where I get stuck a little bit and I'm getting the twins mixed up already.
00:03:59
zuuuuu
Which one's the guide to it?
00:03:59
Scotty
Vex is the sister, Vax is the brother.
00:04:00
Jeff Randle
That makes sense.
00:04:02
Scotty
I finally got it figured out.
00:04:03
zuuuuu
Okay, so Vax is the type of character I would strive to be. He is the broody leader. He's the one that has to like drop everything to go do shit that he doesn't want to do.
00:04:15
zuuuuu
He's got daggers and he's super fast. Like everything about him is just like really cool.
00:04:20
zuuuuu
Plus, I can't not hear Gaara whenever he talks because that was the voice of him.
00:04:25
zuuuuu
So it's like I still hear Gaara whenever he's in a mood. But yeah,
00:04:29
Scotty
Is that the red head from Naruto?
00:04:33
Jeff Randle
The first tail beast that we meet.
00:04:35
zuuuuu
Oh yes. I need blood.
00:04:40
Jeff Randle
Desert coffin.
00:04:44
Jeff Randle
yeah Yep. Yep.
00:04:48
zuuuuu
Yeah, so whenever he goes broody, it's like, yep, that's just 1000% Gara. I can't unhear it and I love every bit of it.
Character Development: Keyleth and Vax
00:04:56
zuuuuu
Especially when he does cuss.
00:04:58
Jeff Randle
Just wait, wait till they get to, wait till we get the Mighty Nein. Cause then you're going to have German Gara.
00:05:07
Jeff Randle
Cause he's very broody there too.
00:05:08
zuuuuu
But my favorite character, just in terms of the design and how it's written and just all of her incredible moments is Keyleth.
00:05:14
zuuuuu
Whenever she has a funny take, it's incredible. Whenever things you know hit her in the feels, it's always incredible. There's a lot of stuff where it's like in this season, especially where she feels like nobody has her back and like her delivery and just all the stuff of feeling alone, but still needing to.
00:05:29
zuuuuu
do what the team needs is just always so wonderfully portrayed and then she's just such an absolute badass on top of that too like for someone to have as low confidence as she does and still be able to deliver for the sake of her team like I absolutely adore her.
00:05:45
Jeff Randle
Yeah, the way that she handled the the ah ah specters in the first season, like, I don't think I can do daylight, but then like, she obliterates them all, or at least allows the team to obliterate them all.
00:05:57
Jeff Randle
But just like, completely whiting out the the keep like, from an early point, she has been that like, low confidence, high badassery character.
00:06:11
Scotty
Well, let's let's just kind of start talking about season three then. And I do think Keyleth is kind of like the perfect introductory character to do that because she got so much development in those first couple of episodes especially.
00:06:24
Scotty
So the romance between she and Vex, that's that's really put to a forefront here with the the cliffhanger we left off of with the conclusion of last season, this Raishan character.
00:06:40
Scotty
Yeah, Raishan, the deceiver.
00:06:40
Jeff Randle
Raishan the deceiver.
00:06:43
Scotty
And you know to your credit, Keyleth is the only one, they're all suspicious of her, but Keyleth is really the one that's kind of like dead set against her.
00:06:51
Scotty
Yeah, which kind of initiates her going off on her own to contemplate things which Vax pursues her and they share a tender moment, which he gets
00:07:00
Jeff Randle
Giggity. Sorry.
00:07:03
Scotty
That's not what I was going to say. He gets seemingly visions of the future in which I got vibes from like Lord of the Rings, the return of the King, where Arwen was like imagining her.
00:07:15
Scotty
I can't remember if it was Aragorn or Arwen, but they were basically imagining their future after he had long died and passed away.
00:07:21
Scotty
And she, you know, being an immortal being would have to Have that grief forever. I definitely got those kind of vibes and I don't know a lot about the Ashari in the context of Dungeons and Dragons, but I get the sense that they're a very very long-lived species if not immortal potentially I See okay gotcha.
00:07:38
Jeff Randle
Well, the the Ashari are a like the name of the tribe. They're the race that she is, is half elf.
00:07:43
zuuuuu
I think she's full health and the twins are half, right?
00:07:46
Jeff Randle
Or she's either half elf or full elven.
00:07:52
Scotty
I think that's right.
00:07:53
Jeff Randle
The twins are half and she's either half or full elf. I cannot remember exactly, but the like when you become the leader of the Ashari, you you were given you know all kinds of extra stuff and rituals are done
D&D Lore: Keyleth and the Ashari Race
00:08:11
Jeff Randle
and like you are long lived because of that.
00:08:16
Scotty
I did look it up. She's a half elf druid.
00:08:19
zuuuuu
And she's going through the trials to be the the top dog of her tribe, right?
00:08:27
Scotty
Yeah, Aromante, sorry, I think I did that last time too.
00:08:28
zuuuuu
I dig it, I dig it.
00:08:33
zuuuuu
Did they make it clear why Vax doesn't want to tell everybody about the visions and the matron and all the stuff that's tripping them up right now?
00:08:47
Jeff Randle
uh it's he's a lonely loner on his loner path has to handle everything himself he's a lone wolf except always with his sister yeah no he he he's always like he was like that in the campaign too it was uh like i don't really feel like i need to tell everybody everything so i'm just gonna keep this to myself
00:09:16
zuuuuu
Hmm, not a fan. She deserves better.
00:09:22
Jeff Randle
Kiki deserves better.
00:09:24
Jeff Randle
The Sudden Tree talks to her.
00:09:27
Scotty
Well, that essentially initiates, you know, despite her misgivings, we have the group decide to trust Raishan anyway, right? Uh, I struggling to remember exactly how that came to be.
00:09:40
Scotty
Was it after they, they went and tried to get the vestige on their own and realized what a, a threat Vorugal was going to be? Is that right?
00:09:48
Jeff Randle
No, that was it was that they went to Thordak's lava pit, basically, his lair, and they saw all of the the eggs that he was, I don't want to say brooding, but that he was nursing and and watching over and that were going to hatch and like, oh, Raishan was telling the truth.
00:09:57
Scotty
Oh, it's layer. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:10:13
Jeff Randle
This is going to be bad.
00:10:15
Scotty
That's what it was.
00:10:15
Jeff Randle
This is going to be real bad.
Chroma Conclave Plot Developments
00:10:19
Scotty
So coming off the heels of the the last season, the threat continues. The major threat is the Chroma Conclave, even though we've eliminated few of those dragons as well as the, ah two of them so far, as well as, yeah, the collection of the vestiges in order to combat them.
00:10:36
Scotty
So I think that's that's kind of what initiates those first couple of episodes is the pursuit of the Dawn Martyr.
00:10:42
Jeff Randle
The plate of the Dawn Martyr.
00:10:47
zuuuuu
Yeah, it was a crazy start to the season two because they were just like, yeah, let's just get right into this and not tell you that it's non linear timeline. So it's like, for us to be in there by himself and rock his badass wings and try to get out of there.
00:10:55
Scotty
Yeah, that's true.
00:11:02
zuuuuu
It's like, all right, now, and then go back to like, oh, there was a plan. This isn't just random.
00:11:10
zuuuuu
This is such a such an incredible opener, especially because like I have the the hue lights and everything.
00:11:14
zuuuuu
And that's just one of those shows that are just great to watch it with. So it's like my whole room just like looking like a lava pit was just super cool.
00:11:23
Jeff Randle
I'm so jealous of that.
00:11:25
Scotty
yeah And if I'm not mistaken, I think it's still Lance Reddick voicing Thordak.
00:11:31
Scotty
Yeah. Okay. So that's right.
00:11:32
zuuuuu
Yep. Episode one was the episode dedicated to Lance.
00:11:35
Scotty
That's right. Yeah. So sadly he has passed, but I'll be curious to see ah ah as the season goes on, uh, how much he contributes because, uh, yeah, i'm I'm trying to think, did Thordak show up in any of the subsequent episodes?
00:11:50
Scotty
I think Virgo kind of like steps up into the scene.
00:11:53
zuuuuu
I think his lava hologram comes up in a couple of my children moments.
00:11:59
Scotty
a la Palpatine. Yeah.
00:12:02
Scotty
Oh, yeah, that's right.
00:12:02
Jeff Randle
Everything has transpired according to my desire.
00:12:06
Scotty
Yeah, you're right because they do have that kind of like committee amongst them where I I can't remember see this. This is what's unfortunate I wish I was I wish I was sharper on some of these earlier episodes But I remember there being like obvious conflict between Raishan and Thordak even though she was like there amongst them It was clear that there was suspicion Around her like he he charged her is like if you don't kill Vox Machina Either they die or you die first make your choice
00:12:35
Jeff Randle
Yeah, and like she was she was very much like, you said you were gonna fix this. You said you were gonna fix my face, but you're not fixing my face.
00:12:44
Jeff Randle
And his his mind is a little tainted by the giant gem lodged in his chest.
00:12:55
Jeff Randle
region Yeah, he's he's effectively on amphetamines just constantly Yeah, oh god
00:12:56
zuuuuu
because it said it basically like amplifies like his anger and lack of judgment and it's just like the emotions are basically just through the roof with him.
00:13:06
zuuuuu
It's all or nothing.
00:13:12
zuuuuu
That explains all those eggs at once.
00:13:14
Scotty
Yeah that tracks, that tracks.
00:13:23
Scotty
Yeah, and I guess just to provide the full contact context of the relationship between Raishan and Thordak, she freed him from the fire plane where he was imprisoned with the promise that he would heal her her curse, her plague that she's inflicted with.
00:13:39
Scotty
And he basically reneged on that. So yeah, they she has great a lot of cause to have ah have beef with him
Scanlan's Personal Growth
00:13:46
Scotty
and side with Vox Machina.
00:13:48
Jeff Randle
Yeah, absolutely.
00:13:51
zuuuuu
Yeah, the only story point we really didn't get from the first episode is the Scanlan leaving to find Kaylee, which, he's a daddy.
00:14:04
zuuuuu
One thing I just want to share from last season, the whole thing where he was like, oh yeah, I would never forget her. I knew you right away from her eyes. And all these moments that we had in this match, she was like, that's not my mom.
00:14:16
Jeff Randle
That's not my mom.
00:14:21
zuuuuu
but a piece of shit. I know that's kind of the the amount of character development over the last two seasons has truly been incredible.
00:14:31
zuuuuu
And that is part of just kind of the ongoing dialogue of him of just him knowing that he is a piece of shit and trying to find ways to rectify it and be better for I mean, it's like he's trying to be a better person.
00:14:44
zuuuuu
But because he keeps derailing for his daughter, he's like putting the team at more risk. because he's just not there for moments that he needs to be there for. So it's like, yeah, you got it kind of need to balance out those priorities over there a little bit, my guy.
00:14:58
Jeff Randle
My guy I love that they they went back to the spice thing though with the one random guy like Spice you spice and it's just get the fuck out of here I Was I was hopeful that they were gonna do something with that whole story cuz like it was so silly how that happened in in the campaign but like I They can't, they it would take like most of the season to go through like all of Ank'Harel doing that.
00:15:30
Jeff Randle
It just... it was ah ah It was a nice little Easter egg, but didn't need to be followed the same way.
Creative Adaptation of D&D
00:15:36
Jeff Randle
And that's that's one of the things that I'm noticing with season three is that there's so much like artistic license being taken with their own IP, because you know there was the way that it happened in the campaign.
00:15:48
Jeff Randle
But they're like, yeah, those things are not as interesting as if we went this way. And like they crafted into a...
00:15:55
zuuuuu
Funny how D and&D works.
00:15:57
Jeff Randle
Yeah, right? They crafted into a ah ah better story so far. Where like, i am I had been worried about Draconia and how they were going to get to Draconia.
00:16:10
Jeff Randle
And turns out that it just kind of is where they put a portal to a hell. And why did they have to go to that hell? Well, because they're going there instead of the fire plane.
00:16:20
Jeff Randle
And why are they going there? Well, because there's a game of chance to be played there.
00:16:27
Scotty
Well, and to your point, that's the great thing. We talked about it. I think more so with season two, like I think the show throughout its run has done a great job of giving every character their beats and their moments to shine. But season one was definitely Percy season. Season two I thought did a better job of giving everybody a little bit of love. And this one seems to be continuing that trend. We do have you know, Pike got her episode that episode with Xerxes was a great, you know, Faustian deal.
00:16:52
Scotty
Oh, that's the thing. Faustian deals seem to be such a through line with so I feel like every single member, whether it's a vestige or a demon or a weapon that's inhabited with the bloodlust of some ancient evil, they all have these Faustian deals that they're they're constantly You know negotiating it and bartering so you have pike she's effectively, you know when she went to hell the everlight told her you do this we're done and And sure enough the seeds of doubt have already been planted Xerxes doesn't seem like a good dude, but he doesn't seem all that bad He's a little bit relatable for being a overlord of hell Okay
00:17:29
Jeff Randle
Oh, man. Oh, so that character of Xerxes Illarez is one of the players from Exandria Unlimited Calamity.
00:17:44
Jeff Randle
Like, the the the actor who was him, Luis Carazo, or Luis Carazo, he
00:17:52
Jeff Randle
he was He played that character, and then in those in that episode, he voiced that character as well.
00:18:01
Jeff Randle
And Xerxes is like everything that he said about like you know working with a Betrayer God and and you know hoping that he can redeem him.
00:18:12
Jeff Randle
Xerxes was a path of redemption paladin, like oath of redemption paladin.
00:18:19
Jeff Randle
The oath of redemption path is like is is very much highlighted by I can save them.
00:18:26
Jeff Randle
you know the the whole like Nobody is entirely bad. And he took that to like the next level as far as like when he found you know this hurt person who had a very interesting story of like you know your brother's your brothers betrayed you and locked you into this place because they loved their creations more than you and each other like they valued them more than you like more than the family that you came here with and then now he's the betrayer God
00:19:02
Jeff Randle
but he's the one that was locked away. And then it turns out that's actually as modious as Modellus, the Lord of Lies, the Great Deceiver, the Lord of the Ninth Level of Hell, you know, kind of a big deal guy, but he was locked away. And then so Xerxes healed him and brought him back and was like, you know, we can we can repair the damage, like we can get you back with your family. And he's just like,
00:19:29
Jeff Randle
No, I'm gonna destroy everything.
00:19:33
zuuuuu
It's like yeah, I'm over that.
00:19:34
Jeff Randle
Yeah, and he's the reason that there is a section of of Exandria that is called the Shattered Teeth because there was a continent there, but now it's just some islands that are left after it was smashed.
00:19:51
Jeff Randle
It's intense. Like, Xerxes is such a big deal as in the timeline.
Xerxes and Exandria Unlimited
00:19:57
Jeff Randle
And for him to show up like he did, where he did, was just... all is by that So it was very exciting. And I have a lot of noises to make about it.
00:20:09
zuuuuu
Yeah, the slagger of that man and just like his introduction and just like, hey, let's just play a game. But you guys have been through a lot. It was a really stressful walk to get to this area. Not big fans of hell. I get it. Let's just relax. You enjoy your comfy little seats over there. We're going to play a game and just have a good time as I emotionally destroy you. And just the dialogue between those two characters, I feel like we've talked a lot about with With like MCU shows and stuff where we got to the point where just dialogue was so important and the storytelling and the conversations were so important I didn't even care about like a finale needing to have like this great big action scene and With this over here the the whole dialogue of Pike even saying like would you want to bring your family back to this and actually getting back into his head after her stressing out so much and and then not knowing if Everlight was going to help out.
00:20:58
zuuuuu
there There was just there was so much of just me being on the edge of my seat as much as like Grog would have liked to have been too, but he was kind of tight bound to where I was just like, wow, this is dialogue heavy.
00:21:06
Jeff Randle
I got some plus chairs up in this bitch.
00:21:08
zuuuuu
I love it. It's ah ah there's just so many facets of show that's coming up. And to still get to the point where Xerxes is like, yeah, go, you can go attack them now. It's fine.
00:21:17
Jeff Randle
Yeah. Kill everyone.
00:21:18
zuuuuu
It's like, get that out of this.
00:21:19
Jeff Randle
Leave her. Yup.
00:21:21
zuuuuu
And then we could see this like hell monster go up against a dragon like doesn't want to see that.
00:21:26
Scotty
Well, I said it before, but this show does one of the best jobs of incorporating both 3D and 2D elements like in the same frame.
00:21:26
zuuuuu
but right but I'm putting money on it.
00:21:35
Scotty
And I loved that fight. Like I felt like, don't get me wrong. I like the Godzilla Kong movies. They're okay. Like they're fun, like, you know, popcorn, but I was like, This is the Godzilla versus Kong.
00:21:45
Scotty
I want to see like the the hell demon was Kong and and Vorugal was obviously Godzilla. That was just so intense. All of the gore and brutality that you want and just want on destruction.
Epic Battles and Animation Quality
00:21:58
Scotty
And then Vox Machina is just kind of watching it go down really good.
00:22:03
Jeff Randle
Yep. That's, I mean, that's how it happened in in the campaign. They summoned Yank, who is a, in the campaign was a Goristro, which is from the abyss.
00:22:15
Jeff Randle
So, you know, horrible demon monster thing to just like, go fight that gigantic dragon.
00:22:24
Jeff Randle
and then hoping they would kill each other and then they'd mop up the rest. And that scene, and oh, so freaking brutal. Like the, the, like ripping the tongue out of the dragon's freaking mouth was insane.
00:22:31
zuuuuu
Oh, yank looks cool.
00:22:41
zuuuuu
He's like, yeah, I've had enough of this.
00:22:43
Jeff Randle
Yeah. I'm done with your mouth.
00:22:50
Scotty
But Vorgel does end up being victorious in quite an epic way, but he does meet his demise in an equally epic way, having the tree just explode from within him.
00:23:04
Scotty
Oh, so satisfying.
00:23:04
Jeff Randle
Yup, yup. And then like, that was another point where Lance Reddick or Thordak showed up, because he saw that happen through the the stone and was just like, damn it, Vorugal.
00:23:23
Jeff Randle
You had one freaking job.
00:23:24
zuuuuu
You were in your element. You wear an ice wagon in a f freaking tundra.
00:23:26
Jeff Randle
Yeah, right? Like, it was cold there.
00:23:31
zuuuuu
What was your excuse? They're not even wearing coats.
00:23:35
zuuuuu
They came from the fiery pits of hell to sub-zero degrees and you still could have chased them down.
00:23:41
Jeff Randle
Right? Like they're dealing with like temperature shock and you still can't do anything.
00:23:48
Scotty
They were in hypothermic hypothermic shock laying there and you still couldn't get the job done.
00:23:54
Jeff Randle
What's your trip on a friggin twig? Break your own friggin neck.
00:24:01
zuuuuu
More ironic and icicle.
00:24:06
zuuuuu
Just to icedalike my doom- oops.
00:24:09
Jeff Randle
Whoops, it does like that. Like the hot fives, like it the hot fives, it really hurts.
00:24:22
Jeff Randle
Oh, that would be so funny.
00:24:25
Jeff Randle
But no, instead it was brutal. It was super freaking brutal.
00:24:28
Scotty
Yes. Yes. I wanted to backtrack and I don't have a ah ah good segue other than the fact that we're talking about dragons and this character is somewhat dragon-like. But when we were back in Draconia, we had Allura and Kima's old compatriots, was it Dola?
00:24:45
Scotty
who ended up being, what a shit hill. I mean, you can just see it coming from a mile away, but he he betrays them and you know he he gets his just desserts.
00:24:55
Scotty
But the whole time I was seeing that character, I kept being reminded of, I don't know if how familiar either of you guys are with the Gargoyles animated series from Disney, but he looks very much like one of the Gargoyles.
00:25:09
Jeff Randle
You're right, he does. Like which of the boroughs are you?
00:25:14
Scotty
Who was he? I hate that I'm not being, I can't pull it off the top of my head. and
00:25:22
zuuuuu
I'm still trying to figure out which Vox Machina character we're talking about.
00:25:26
Jeff Randle
I did say Brooklyn.
00:25:26
Scotty
He was, oh yeah, Brooklyn, did you say that?
00:25:29
zuuuuu
How do you spell that?
00:25:30
Jeff Randle
The pink one?
00:25:30
Scotty
Okay, okay. Yes, yes.
00:25:34
Jeff Randle
yeah Yep. Yep, yep, yep. Very much look like Brooklyn.
00:25:36
Scotty
We're talking, Yeah, we're, we're talking about how, they had the, everybody split up to do their like individual missions and stuff like that, uh, Kima and Allura were in draconian.
00:25:49
Jeff Randle
Yeah, they they were in Draconia, meeting up with their their old adventuring partner, the Dragonborn person whose name escapes me in the moment.
00:26:02
Scotty
Yeah, I can't, I can't pull that one.
00:26:03
zuuuuu
I mean, if you don't know, there's no hope for me.
00:26:06
Jeff Randle
Well, I mean, it wasn't a person that was in the campaign. Like, this is new territory, so.
00:26:17
Scotty
Dola was the the former teammate, yes.
00:26:21
Scotty
OK. I didn't realize that's when you said Dragonborn. I didn't realize that's that's where you you were saying.
00:26:26
Jeff Randle
Yeah, that's the the race that, yeah.
00:26:28
Scotty
Oh, they're Dragonborn? i' See, i was I was just thinking Skyrim. When I hear Dragonborn, I'm like, oh, that must be like the chosen one.
00:26:32
Jeff Randle
Oh, no, no, no, no.
00:26:35
Jeff Randle
that's That is the race. They you know they look like half dragon-ish.
00:26:40
Jeff Randle
They have draconic features, but they're technically humanoid.
00:26:40
Scotty
Okay. Cool. Makes sense. Makes sense.
00:26:46
Jeff Randle
But they do also have a breath weapon that matches the color of the dragon that they resemble.
00:26:54
Jeff Randle
Which is hot blooded.
00:26:54
Scotty
Are they hot blooded or cold blooded? Okay.
00:27:00
Jeff Randle
Generally humanoid.
00:27:00
zuuuuu
Due to lack of options.
00:27:02
Scotty
Fair enough. Fair enough.
00:27:06
Scotty
Okay. Well, uh, we've talked about a few of our members of Vox Machina and what they've been up to in season three, but, uh, you know, we talked about Keyleth and Vax's fledgling relationship.
00:27:18
Scotty
Will they, won't they? But the one that we've got a little bit more progress on was, uh, Percy and Vex. What do we think about that?
00:27:24
zuuuuu
That's how much more will they?
00:27:26
Jeff Randle
Brown chicken, brown, wow.
00:27:31
zuuuuu
It was an interesting transition watching season two and three together from Vax wanting Percy's head after Vax almost died for with how he got the the matron armor.
00:27:46
zuuuuu
So it it seemed like he was holding a grudge for a good chunk of that time too. So for him to finally back up a little bit, just be like, yeah, that makes you happy, but you know, I'm still gonna kill you if you get hurt again.
00:27:59
zuuuuu
it's like he did have to lighten up, but I don't think he's fully let go of that grudge again. And I'm worried something's going to happen. That's actually going to make backs go off on Percy.
00:28:08
zuuuuu
just a quick side thing, because we were talking about character development and stuff, it was funny how season one was so heavy on Percy season two, everybody else. And then they had to kind of bring in a plot to make Percy relevant again.
00:28:20
Scotty
No. Well, we'll get into that. I'm i'm sure you're talking about ah Ripley and the fact that she's inherited his penchant for weapon making, gun making specifically, as well as his ah his old buddy, Orthax.
00:28:35
Scotty
Orthax, I add, and that was unnecessary. But going back to, i I love that you focused on Percy and Vax's relationship when we were talking about Percy and, no, no, I meant,
00:28:45
Jeff Randle
Vex. Oh, you did.
00:28:48
Scotty
i mean I'm at vax yeah yeah i am admit Vax because I love the the exchange and the hot tub where when they finally come to terms.
00:28:48
zuuuuu
Yeah, because I'm talking about the dialogue between them, yeah.
00:28:48
Jeff Randle
You did. Yep.
00:28:57
Scotty
I think it Vax is the one that stands up and kind of, you know, his he's fully exposed there and he's like, there's not a thing between us.
00:29:04
zuuuuu
He's just like, whoa. Sure is.
00:29:07
Jeff Randle
thought he would never leave. That was so funny.
00:29:15
Jeff Randle
the The Scanlan's mansion, or the the Chateau Shorthalt, if you will, was so great.
00:29:22
Jeff Randle
I'm i'm glad that they incorporated that. Because that's like that's just a spell that you eventually get. is I think it's like Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion or something like that.
00:29:34
Jeff Randle
But it's just the mansion spell. And having him get it from a key makes more sense as far as like story-wise other than like, I got stronger and now I can cast bigger spells.
00:29:47
Jeff Randle
I don't know where I got it from, but here it is.
00:29:50
Scotty
Yeah. Yeah. I don't know how long it would take for me to get tired of chicken. I mean, the Chateau short-haul seems pretty awesome. I think I could put up with chicken for quite a long time.
00:29:59
Jeff Randle
Yes, absolutely. 100%. Do you know how many ways you can have chicken?
00:30:06
Jeff Randle
like yeah There's so many.
00:30:09
Scotty
Yeah. at Chicken salad. Don't get me started. I'm going to sound like Bubba from Forrest Gump.
00:30:14
zuuuuu
chicken tendies dude, that's all I need.
00:30:17
Jeff Randle
Chicken scabby chump flambe.
00:30:23
zuuuuu
But yes, that is one of the one of the relationships between Percy and Vex.
00:30:30
zuuuuu
That's just kind of like you see it coming, but the the payoff of it was really nice, too. And we kind of repeat the dialogue that we were talking about with Vax earlier with just kind of like how he's the broody, you know, lone wolf and this and that.
00:30:43
zuuuuu
So when Percy started being a wamp and wanting more and wanting titles in a relationship,
00:30:51
zuuuuu
just kidding um she was just kind of like oh i thought we were just having fun it's like no no no you love him just accept it oh but so just the fact that this this show can hit so many tones and even when it comes to the romantic stuff it's just it's really really well done there were obviously you know i was I was worried that her distance that she was going to keep was going to be a little more problematic, but I think Percy ended up being mature enough in those regards to not let it get in the way with the situation at hand, where I feel like it was a little more with Keylep and Vax, Vax, Vax, Vax, Vax, Vax, Vax.
00:31:31
Scotty
Yes, yeah, Vax, you got it.
00:31:35
zuuuuu
So yeah, all the of all the relationships that have developed within this group, and they need HR committee. think that that one is the strongest one with the most with the most payoff going off in the future.
00:31:50
Scotty
That is fair, especially when you mentioned the need for maybe like an HR representative because I hadn't really thought about it. I was focusing mainly on our two, you know, primary romances there, but there is an argument to be had for Scanlon and Pike.
00:32:04
Scotty
They're starting, you know, slowly but surely show some signs of affection for each other. So that really leaves Grog. Grog is the one that's not involved with anybody else.
00:32:13
zuuuuu
Yeah, he is with a sword. Got a really bad breakup.
00:32:15
Jeff Randle
hu Oh my god.
00:32:19
zuuuuu
He was, his heart was pretty shattered.
00:32:22
Scotty
Yeah. Yeah. That's fair.
00:32:24
Jeff Randle
As was his body.
00:32:28
zuuuuu
Oh my God. My muscles.
00:32:34
zuuuuu
Where's my muscles go? Can you bring them back, please?
00:32:38
Scotty
My muscles. Is that the true source of my strength?
00:32:49
Scotty
Well, Zuhari, you kind of made the comment that you felt like they kind of had, and forgive me if I'm, you know, inserting words where I shouldn't be, but I got the sense that you felt like they kind of shoehorned in a plot for Percy a little bit, just to give him kind of something to do.
00:33:02
Scotty
But that whole plot line by the end of episode six ended up being like a pretty major through line with, you know, the revelation that Ripley was the one that sold out white stone.
00:33:13
Scotty
White stone has been laid to waste and, Yeah, I had something else to say.
00:33:19
zuuuuu
Yeah, I think it was more of what I was getting at with that was because season.
Character Relationships: Percy and Vex
00:33:27
zuuuuu
It's like season one and two had a lot of character development. You know a lot about their past now. You know a lot about how they got where they're at. And then you've seen growth from there as well.
00:33:38
zuuuuu
So with season one being so Percy heavy and season two being the rest of Vox Machina, like now everyone's on even playing field, we don't really need to have flashbacks and hidden motives and all that stuff.
00:33:50
zuuuuu
It's like, we know everything that we need to know about these characters and it's nice that we can just bring up things and just kind of go into those storylines. and just let everything be forward moving from here on out unless new characters get introduced as part of the team.
00:33:57
Jeff Randle
yeah Dissolution.
00:34:03
Scotty
Yeah, I hear you and and that makes a lot of sense and I agree with that. I did recall the other thing I wanted to say as as far as the fallout that occurs between, you know, Percy and Ripley. The major thing that happened with episode six is that that eventually leads to the dissolution.
00:34:22
Scotty
disillusion Dissolvement. That's the word I'm looking for.
00:34:25
Scotty
the dissolved Yeah, dissolution dissolve but dissolve that was the word I was looking for the dissolve bit of the partnership with Raishan because they're basically all like, you know Against her and even with the revelation that it it was in fact Ripley.
00:34:38
Scotty
They don't really care. They're done with her Yeah
00:34:39
Jeff Randle
Yeah. The enemy of my enemy is still my freaking enemy.
00:34:48
Jeff Randle
Yeah, all the way.
00:34:53
Jeff Randle
Oh, man, I am I'm so looking forward to the the rest of the stuff with Ripley, because in the campaign, it was real intense.
00:35:03
Jeff Randle
What happened next? With the God, it wasn't called magician's judge, what was her her vestige cloak? Was it different?
00:35:14
Scotty
uh, cloak of transportation.
00:35:15
Scotty
i That's a little basic.
00:35:16
Jeff Randle
No, no, no, no, it was it was the one that takes in magic and reflects it.
00:35:23
zuuuuu
Oh, I thought it was just fire.
00:35:26
Jeff Randle
Now, that's the plate of the Dawn Martyr.
00:35:30
Jeff Randle
Oh, God. Marker.
00:35:33
zuuuuu
Festages of divergence.
00:35:36
Scotty
The Cabal's ruin, was that right?
00:35:37
Jeff Randle
Cabal's ruin is the name of it.
00:35:38
zuuuuu
Holy crap, there's a lot of them.
00:35:43
Jeff Randle
Yeah, she gets in, you know, in the campaign she got Cabal's Ruin and there was a ah ah different vestige of divergence that was a dagger that allows the the wielder to throw it and like when it hits you teleport to that place or
00:36:03
Scotty
Ooh, that's super cool.
00:36:05
Jeff Randle
Super cool for for Vax, but the the wielder before Vax was someone fairly important to him, who was then caused to turn on him.
00:36:18
Jeff Randle
Yep. I don't know if they're gonna go that route. I don't know if they're gonna go that route.
00:36:24
zuuuuu
That's a super in Destiny 2 right now.
00:36:28
zuuuuu
that's a super in Destiny 2 right now it's like you throw the knife and then wherever it lands you like teleport over there and then you do like this like lightning spin it's pretty cool it is a hunter move because hunters rule just take my word for it
00:36:33
Scotty
Yeah. When you said that, I thought it would be a cool mechanic for a video game.
00:36:37
Scotty
I was thinking like dishonored. I could see that being a power and dishonored or something like that.
00:36:52
Scotty
Yeah. I think the the train for destiny has, uh, I missed that train. I hadn't played it by now.
00:36:57
zuuuuu
okay Well aboard the hell diver train.
00:37:00
Scotty
I, so I did pick up hell diver, but I forgot that it required the PlayStation monthly fee, which I can pay for, but it was just kind of like, I'm going to play the resident evil for remake before I dive into hell divers.
00:37:12
Jeff Randle
before you dive in.
00:37:21
Jeff Randle
But let's see at this point.
00:37:24
Jeff Randle
Oh, God, I don't know. Okay. there is a staff that Keyleth got that is a vestige of divergence.
00:37:36
Jeff Randle
And it was inside, like in the innards of Yank, the, the Garistro.
00:37:44
Jeff Randle
And that's part of why they summoned the Garistro to the dragon. It was like a two for one deal, like kill the dragon. pull, you know, when when the grister's also dead, pull it apart and find, oh look, Spire of Conflux right there.
00:37:57
Jeff Randle
Now Kiki has a ah vestige as well, yay. But they haven't done that. So don't know how she's gonna get her awesome staff.
00:38:10
zuuuuu
which she does have a vestige.
00:38:10
Jeff Randle
I'm looking forward to it though.
00:38:10
Scotty
Hmm. Yeah. Yeah. I obviously have zero context. So I'm just kind of like pure speculation here, but it would be kind of cool if they had some reason to have to go back to, uh, Vorgals corpse and having that tree that bloomed out of him.
00:38:26
Scotty
Maybe that's the source of her new staff or something like that.
00:38:29
Jeff Randle
Oh, the that could be, that could be good.
00:38:29
Scotty
That be could be kind of cool.
00:38:34
Jeff Randle
Well, like, historically, the Spire of Conflux was supposed to be a staff, like, you know, staff of power that's passed down from a Shari leader to a Shari leader at through the ages.
00:38:46
Jeff Randle
But then some Shari leader died to this demon and the staff was taken, eaten, basically.
00:38:55
zuuuuu
This fire lay within the stomach of a goristro named Yank, who devoured the staff along with its wielder.
00:39:03
Scotty
So Yank said yoink.
00:39:07
Jeff Randle
He said, nah.
00:39:09
zuuuuu
Oh, I worry about where Keyleth is gonna have to pull that out from.
00:39:18
Jeff Randle
Yeah, it gets gross, but.
00:39:22
Jeff Randle
you know, I don't like it. But like, they, I don't think that they covered when they talked to Sisa, or rather when Mythcarver was
Quest for Vestiges of Divergence
00:39:34
Jeff Randle
I don't think they they talked about where everything is like where like the spire of conflicts or where whisper are.
00:39:44
zuuuuu
because it got rudely interrupted by that dragon which kicked off a great sphinx dragon fight but there wasn't too much to really talk about the the items in that moment rip
00:39:55
Jeff Randle
Yeah, it's unfortunate. But he has myth carver now. So they can find it.
00:40:06
zuuuuu
more people have used it than he has this season
00:40:09
Scotty
Is that how myth carve it carver carver works whatever you Seek it shows you because I mean, I think it's been revealed that it could show people potentially does it show items as well?
00:40:18
Jeff Randle
That's a good question.
00:40:19
zuuuuu
When the dragon had it, that's how he found the other vestiges, right? Like he was looking for the actual items.
00:40:23
Scotty
Was it? Okay. Okay. Now that stands to reason. I'm sure they share some kind of connection at the very least.
00:40:33
zuuuuu
I would have just taken your word for it if that was the case. It is cool how the size changes depending on who holds it.
00:40:41
zuuuuu
Cause could you imagine if Grog had to use it? It was just like a little toothpick.
00:40:45
Jeff Randle
What am I gonna do with this?
00:40:48
zuuuuu
Of course, all these stuff in my teeth!
00:40:49
Scotty
Oh, yeah. That's a good point because we didn't really discuss it in too much detail because I feel like they were. You know, they've kind of emerged in season three as like pretty solid secondary characters, but Allura and Kima, like that episode that Forgo finally meets his demise. They get, you know, a lot of focus in terms of their relationship and their give and take throughout, you know, the years of knowing each other. But Kima does get that moment. She's the one that takes Smith Carver and has her moment, you know, to deliver that but ah that below that sets up Keyleth for the yeah
00:41:28
zuuuuu
client Pollen everywhere.
00:41:35
Jeff Randle
Oh, that's gonna be hell on my allergies. And it's flu season? Ugh. Because, you know, it's cold there.
00:41:43
Scotty
Talk to your Xerxes about Zyrtec today.
00:41:46
Jeff Randle
Cuz Dirk's tech.
00:41:51
Jeff Randle
Oh, goodness. That's funny. That's, that's real good.
00:41:56
Scotty
Yeah, I'm not sure I have too much more. I wish I could remember, you know, more specific jokes and and stuff like that because that's, I mean, that's the thing about the show. We, so we said it in the previous episode, but it's just like constantly firing on all cylinders, even like the small stuff with like, just like framing shots and choosing to have the care, the camera be more cinematic, like having foliage in the foreground and having the characters have to like, you know,
00:42:21
Scotty
interact with that and move past it rather than just a static shot. It's those little flourishes that make this show so, so good.
00:42:31
Jeff Randle
It's the and the flexing that Titmouse is doing is is really nice.
00:42:37
Jeff Randle
And like the way that they can provide a visual of this like gigantic lava-riddled hellscape, and that's not the most interesting thing.
00:42:52
Jeff Randle
like It's you know fires everywhere, bubbling. and like That's not the most interesting thing. The the most interesting thing is uh is Vax doing his like uh his hell dive basically like his he's he's he's base jumping from the top of a broom and like that little black streak in the middle of it is just like oh my god oh my god it's so much there's tension he's gonna ah your wings Vax like i ah ah this show gets me so excited
00:43:26
Jeff Randle
visually, let alone the story being amazing.
00:43:27
Scotty
Oh, yeah. Absolutely. Mm hmm. Mm hmm.
00:43:32
Jeff Randle
My heart can't take it. I gotta quit watching this show.
00:43:35
Jeff Randle
Sorry guys, I can't come back.
00:43:37
zuuuuu
well Yeah, all the all the jackass moments never cease to amaze me when it comes to the action of the show.
00:43:39
Scotty
What have we done?
00:43:46
Scotty
Yeah. you When you say jackass, what do you mean? Like the MTV show?
00:43:50
zuuuuu
Yeah, just the crazy shit that they come up with just to ah get a kill or get some damage and it's like, wow, that's that was another bold approach.
00:44:05
Jeff Randle
Are you ready, Keyleth? No, but do it anyway.
00:44:08
Scotty
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Good call.
00:44:11
zuuuuu
Just die along like that, I just love her so much.
00:44:14
zuuuuu
I think I'm good a bitch about it, but I'm gonna get it done.
00:44:18
Jeff Randle
I'm going to take care of business, but damn it, I'm going to be upset about it the whole time.
00:44:23
zuuuuu
Probably barf a bunch, it's okay.
00:44:25
Jeff Randle
Oh, God. I can't eat any more bugs.
00:44:30
zuuuuu
Dude, when they all had to go undercover in hell, she was like, hu
00:44:35
Scotty
Oh, yeah. That's a good call. Yeah. That's a good call.
00:44:37
Jeff Randle
We're looking for.
00:44:39
Jeff Randle
dirk says i laugh
00:44:44
zuuuuu
Talk about being able to read a room and adapt.
00:44:54
zuuuuu
Why am I so little?
00:45:04
Jeff Randle
yep, yep, yep. And then, let's see.
00:45:08
Jeff Randle
So we talked about that. We talked about the the card game. We talked about the badass fight. We talked about backstory of Allura and Kima and how much we all love Kima now.
00:45:16
Scotty
Mm hmm. Yeah, yeah.
00:45:24
Jeff Randle
Yeah, not just because she's voiced by Detective Rosa Diaz.
00:45:30
zuuuuu
Oh, is she? That's awesome.
00:45:34
Jeff Randle
And then we talked about Scanlan's Magnificent Magic. I think we've covered, like, all of the major points. I think it's time to just go watch Seven, Eight, and Nine.
00:45:44
Scotty
i Yeah, i I think so.
00:45:46
zuuuuu
Rem me of a good time.
00:45:48
Jeff Randle
How dare you?
00:45:50
Scotty
All right, well, yeah, I'm totally down for that. As we wrap things up here, though, I will address TJ Stafford. I know you sent us some feedback. We'll wait till next episode when we have season three in its entire entirety and all the context there.
00:46:04
Scotty
We will be happy to read your feedback. And everybody else that's you know tuning in for Vox Machina, send us some feedback. Let us know what you're thinking about this season, the pure the previous seasons. Who's your favorite character?
00:46:16
Scotty
Have you played Dungeons and Dragons?
00:46:16
Jeff Randle
And why is it grog?
00:46:18
Scotty
Yeah, right. Who's your favorite and why is it, Greg?
00:46:21
Scotty
What's your familiarity with Critical Role and their other campaigns? Are you excited for the Mighty Nein? This is the place to let us know.
00:46:29
Jeff Randle
And they, they showed an animatic for the mighty nine at SDCC and it just, it it got me so excited.

Animation deliberation, podcast at gmail dot.com.
00:46:41
Jeff Randle
So excited. Cause like. That campaign was real good.
00:46:46
Jeff Randle
Oh yeah, I'm stoked. Freakin' stoked.
00:46:51
zuuuuu
So what you're saying is you're gonna get Baldur's Gate out of anticipation and excitement.
00:46:59
Scotty
Baldur's gate three, the video game.
00:47:03
zuuuuu
I'm like casually persuading him to play with me.
00:47:06
Jeff Randle
i need to either I need to either get a PS5 or a new video card from my computer.
00:47:13
Jeff Randle
And those are both about the same price.
00:47:17
zuuuuu
One involves playing with me though.
00:47:21
zuuuuu
Baldur's Gate is not cross-platform, unfortunately.
00:47:25
Scotty
went away Now I'm interested in Baldur's Gate 3 with all the yeah the buzz and positivity around it. But for what the research I've done, it's still turn-based combat, which is just ah ah a kicker for me. I'm just not a fan of turn-based combat. Like the Paper Mario games are like the one rare exception where I dig it.
00:47:48
zuuuuu
Yeah for Baldur's Gate it was like my Helldivers group was trying to find something else that all of us could play and in the early stages of it it was mostly four of us so we were like let's just get Baldur's Gate and we'll make a Friday night out of it and we'll all be on by like 8 30 and play and blah blah blah and this and that.
00:48:07
zuuuuu
and it was such a nightmare everyone was just pitching about who was doing what and how we went about it and everyone wanted to do their own thing and complaining with somebody else did something and then despite how much i said hey there was this advice on youtube video to make sure you save as you go and he was like no it's auto save and i was like why would he tell me that why would he strictly say make sure you save if it's an auto save game
00:48:33
zuuuuu
Lo and behold, three and a half hours of progress, we get into a fight, get our asses handed to us, and start all the way back in the beginning.
00:48:42
zuuuuu
Nobody has wanted to open the game since then, so that was a complete waste of money because I bought it to play with people, and I have yet to play with people since then.
00:48:53
Jeff Randle
I see. So that's why you want me to get it so badly.
00:48:59
zuuuuu
And because I have a Twitch now, follow me as who plays games. So if we were up to two a campaign together, I feel like that would be delightful.
00:49:09
Jeff Randle
I can see that big
00:49:14
Scotty
Well, yeah, that's the perfect segue. You mentioned your Twitch channel, so let's get into it. what What else do you have going on you want to let the people know about?
00:49:20
zuuuuu
Alright, apparently on top of streaming to Twitch, i can switch treat I can stream to TikTok at the same time, so Zu's quick thoughts on that one. Maybe I'll start doing the videos on there again for my quick thoughts on TV shows and movies. aside from that, there's this podcast, obviously, that you love and definitely want to write feedback to and make sure there's...
00:49:38
zuuuuu
animation-deliberation-podcast-at-GMO.com, and then three-two-three with Reed Murphy, that's REID, where I do my football picks every week and I have a phenomenal lead in front of everybody else right now.
00:49:49
zuuuuu
So while I suck at all the fantasy stuff, I am doing great with just picking who's gonna win. and Yeah, I think that's it on my realm right now. I finally have a public Instagram called zooskadoo, so if you want to check
00:49:58
Scotty

00:50:24
Jeff Randle
Full barbarian.
00:50:26
zuuuuu
I was gonna say half-barbarian full awesome.
00:50:32
Scotty
Mr. Jeff Randall, what you got?
00:50:34
Jeff Randle
Well, I mean, you may have heard of the Marvel Cinematic Universe podcast.
00:50:39
Jeff Randle
Yeah, but that old thing.
00:50:39
zuuuuu
Was that about sleeper man?
00:50:43
Jeff Randle
Yeah, we currently have Agatha running. Agatha All Along is currently airing and is such a good show.
00:50:52
Jeff Randle

00:51:05
Jeff Randle
But then also everywhere you get podcasts, Marvel Cinematic Universe podcast is there. And I think that's all I'm working on at the moment other than trying to move.
00:51:17
Jeff Randle
Cause my lease at my new place starts tomorrow.
00:51:17
zuuuuu
30 days or 29 days.
00:51:23
Scotty
Yeah. I do not envy you.
00:51:24
Scotty
I'm sure it's going to be great to be in a new place, but I have moved so many times in my life. I, I dread it every time it has to happen.
00:51:31
zuuuuu
If you buy on my plane ticket, I'll help.
00:51:35
Scotty
Yeah. More hands make lighter work.
00:51:39
Scotty
