We start the show by getting our theme song ripped off by an Olive Garden commercial!  I guess we should be flattered.   It's also Jerid's birthday week so everyone give him crap about his age.  Come join us for some general BS and maybe some shop talk.

We'd love to hear from you so send in questions to the show Instagram: @the.tttpodcast

How's everybody doing today? Welcome to the Triple T for Knife Makers podcast. I am Dennis Terrell from Terrell Knife Works. As always, I've got Jared Sandoval from Echo Blades.

Theme Song Controversy

00:00:28
Speaker
Jared, I got to start out. I'm really pissed off. Tell me, I just heard our theme song in a fucking Olive Garden commercial. ah yes I am totally serious. Like minutes before I came up to record, I'm listening to the Olive Garden commercial. I'm like, what the fuck? I had, yeah I told Kim, I'm like, that's our theme song. I had to rewind it and play it again. I even recorded it on my phone. Play it. I need to hear it.
00:01:08
Speaker
ah Ladies and gentlemen, when you listen to the Triple T podcast, you also get endless bread baskets. The audio is going to suck, but listen. Oh my God, it is.

You get the never ending breadsticks. That's right. It was minutes before this too. I was like, what the hell? And I was busting Toby and, uh, honor for using the default soundtrack that comes with Zengaster. Holy shit. We use the damn, all of Guardian commercial. No, I think we used it first. That commercial just came out. So they stole it from us. I think it's been, uh, 26 weeks. We've had the copyright on that thing. So pay up all of garden and Brit sticks. I'll take that. Actually. They could pay us in, uh, good. Yeah. Wait, aren't they free with a meal though? Well, not that's free Dennis, but yeah yes, they're free. Oh, so how you been? How's your week? Uh, good. Good. I'm good.
00:02:36

Everything is good. Feeling good.

Personal Updates and Family Life

00:02:40
Speaker
I really, really enjoyed the trip back down to planet Earth with the weather this weekend, man. It was beautiful. It was, I think, 75. Just typical Bay Area weather, man. It was high of 75. When I got up Saturday morning, it was like 60 degrees. It was the best. So my wife and I have been walking every morning. for about a month and a half now. And during that heat wave, it was like 75, you know, at like, I think we go out at like five in the morning. And it was like 54 today. I was like, yes, I love it. So it's all short lived, though. We're going to be back up to 100 in a couple of days. Yeah, I got family coming in, so.
00:03:32
Speaker
I don't think I'm going to get all that much done the rest of the week in the shop, maybe tomorrow, but after that, we'll be coming over. Um, my stepdaughter Corinne, she's coming into town for, um, my grandson's birthday party this weekend. Oh, that's right. Having a whole bunch of people over for his fifth ah birthday party. So right he's got a great birthday. I know someone else has a birthday this week. That's right. Jared is going to be 49. Fuck off.
00:04:10
Speaker
Sorry, you just look 49. You're only going to be 45. I got memes to say different, buddy. Last week I was a strapping, yoked ass youngster. Yeah, you you look like Henry Cavill last week. That was great.
00:04:32
Speaker
I never put that reel out. I i got to do that. which real the The Rick Hall reel. Speaking of, you know, the, the meme where, you know, you guys, where you paid Rick oh to break my knife. And then we had this very, like the exact situation that happened to me with the, uh, The knife, your dagger having like a ah slight warp. And then when we put it on the surface grinder and hit the magnetic chuck, it kind of popped it down. Yeah. So I took a video and I was like, Hey Dennis, i have a great idea. I know how to fix this right up. Put it in a three point jig and clamp down on it on the vice. And I sent it to Rick and he's like, I'm never going to let that down. I'm like, I'm not, I'm not sure who's crazier.
00:05:24

him for doing it or you for letting him do it.

Workshop Lessons with Jared's Son

00:05:28
Speaker
I mean, I am just the new young knife maker taking advice from my, you know, my mentors and following suggestions. Please. That's it. Was taken advantage of. How much was it? How much was it? How much did you give him? How much did you give him? Oh, that was priceless. you i sp my drink up You can't put a price on that kind of entertainment. No, that was, yeah, go ahead. We're going to start throwing Jerry, go weld your knife up twice. Or was this three times? Three times. Well, I guess you suck at welding. Well, I suck at a lot of things, but and apparently I'm a sucker and get took advantage of. Well, in the first
00:06:18
Speaker
20 minutes, we're heaving those knives at the target. Like we were trying to kill it. That was true. We did back it off a little bit after that. Yeah. You guys got tired because you're old, but whatever. Hey, I can't wait till you hit 50 and I get to laugh at you. Well, you got five more years after Wednesday, buddy. It's 45. It's all downhill now. And it's been downhill for a while, but we're going to make this next five years the best. What do you say about that? Okay. I agree. Let's do it. All right. All right. Yeah. That's good stuff. So did you, besides yesterday, when you came over, did you make it in the shop at all last week? Yeah. On Saturday, I, so I got, I got a good story. So my son just turned 16, uh, beginning of this month.
00:07:16
Speaker
And I've shared this before with a bunch of people, but prior to knife making, I never made anything like at all. I never had, I never owned tools. I never had, you know, power tools for sure. Um, so I, I haven't, I didn't, not not set a great example, but like he didn't grow up with, you know, but just like me, like I never, nobody around me ever made anything. Right. My dad fixed a lot of shit, but. He was off and on in and out, but nevertheless, Jared hasn't had this huge, you know, um, opportunity to, you know, do things in the shop and make stuff with our hands. Right. So over the last three years, um, and you mean your son, Jared, for everyone thinking you're talking in the third person. Yeah, I am talking. I do talk in the third person. This one I'm talking about Jared Jr. yes Yeah. So, um, and I've tried to get him, a you know,
00:08:16
Speaker
in the shop, but it's kind of like ah my style of parenting is to let them do what they want to do, lead them by example, and show them things, give them opportunities, to expose them to as much stuff as I can. But I know from experience, trying to be forced into a certain realm of something you're not interested in isn't very productive. It doesn't help the relationship. And, you know, there's a lot of negative to that, right? So it sucks or really want him to, you know, pick this stuff up and to on there. He's, he's taking a little, um, interest in welding. but Yeah, but that's, that's about it. So it was, I'm always thinking of things like, how can I get him in the shop? Right. And it started dawn on me cause he asked me for a video game on Friday and I started thinking about him like, well, you don't have to necessarily want to like make anything in the shop, but you know what?
00:09:14
Speaker
I can instill the value of cleaning a shop and working right for, for things and not just receiving stuff, right? Cause we all have to work and, and buy things, right? So not everything is given to us. So that was a great opportunity to get them in the shop, started getting them in exposed to, you know, things. And my shop is a disaster. Um, most of the time, even when I've cleaned it, it's still an organized and stuff, but You know, I mean, you know, everybody, all our maker friends and family know that where you get out there one knife and you can destroy things and, you know, grinding dust is everywhere. And it's like an endless game of sweep up and, you know, like getting dust off of stuff. So I had him sweep the shop and it clamps out everywhere. So I started showing him where this is where the clamps go. This is where this goes. this is yeah So it actually turned out to be a couple hours of, uh,
00:10:13
Speaker
You know, just hanging out with him and having him kind of do things and really guys really, really trying really hard not to rip the fucking broom out of his hand. ah yes Could like make him sweep the right way. You know what I mean? But that's what my dad used to do to me. So I, I try not to, but every now and again, I'm like, no, no, hey, try this way, try this way, try that way. So it was cool, man. I got him in there. And, um, and then yesterday he, uh, we were fortunate at your house. So I didn't, uh, wasn't there in the shop, but when I got home in the evening, I was like, did you clean the shop? He's like, well, man, I just cleaned the shop yesterday. I'm like, well, I was working in it after. So like, get out there.
00:10:57
Speaker
So he was like, my wife comes upstairs and goes, Jared's sweeping the shop and putting stuff away. I go at a boy at a boy. So I don't know. Maybe we, uh, we got something going here and I'll, I'll trick him into, uh, getting out there more, but Have you ever had him forge anything? No interest. Really? Yeah. Because you think that'd be the one thing that they want to do, right? Hit hot steel with a hammer. Who doesn't want to do that? Yeah, but I haven't done it yet. When I get the injection forge, I'll probably get him in there out there and kind of trying to do that. Because blacksmith is cool, right? And you can make those the leaf project and, you know, just small things like that that don't take a huge amount of effort and time, you know, can hopefully spark that interest. but
00:11:41
Speaker
I was just happy to have them out there and have them working and doing things. So, um, that was cool. But so after all of that, had the garage door wide open. I mean, it was just beautiful. Like this, the perfect, that's, that's how it is like all winter, you know, basically yeah shop open and, you know, um, cool weather, not sweating and tripping out because it's hot as hell. But, uh, so I got to work on the, um, I sold the, Intrepid 2.0, which is a scaled down version, um, just slightly, probably 75%. Um, but it's really came out really good. I'm super happy with it. But, uh, Brent had made Brent from baldman knife and tool had made me a, uh, a mini Albatross. And he, the handle was like Oakland A's theme. So he took a bunch of liners and kind of epoxy them together, made this really cool handle. Um,
00:12:40
Speaker
So a ah client from work um lives out in South Dakota, but he was born here in the Bay Area and he's a big A's fan. So I was telling him about it. And anyways, he was like, yeah, do it. Let's try it. So I got um green and black fat carbon from blade show, which I've never used. I glued up gray liners on it and then yellow. And I do, this thing is coming out fucking so nice. I am really, really happy with it. It's good. It looks good. Yeah. It's, it's going to be pretty damn cool. I've never actually seen that fat carbon shined up. It looks really nice. Dude. It was, it really popped. Like go you could, you know, I've said this many times that that's still my favorite.
00:13:31
Speaker
part of making is, you know, trying to imagine how that handle is going to buff out, you know, totally. So that is like the, the, the money shot when you're doing the, you know, putting the, the mineral oil on the handle, uh, is, is always the fun part. It never gets old. Never. So I did a quick, uh, did the fronts on it and kind of shined it up, but yeah, you saw, it was, it was pretty damn cool, but, uh, I was laughing cause I had a, And I did, that's what I did. I glued those liners up with, um, with my son, the yellow, cause I had, the handle was kind of thin. So I thought another liner would help to get it, give it a little girth. And, um, I was like, well, this is pretty easy. Maybe he'll hang out with me and do that. So I glued up the liners and I've been using CA glue to do that instead of mixing the two part epoxy. And, uh, so we're going through it.
00:14:28
Speaker
Glue them all up, sanded them down, you know, did the whole thing, showed them how to flatten the scales and all that crap. And then I put the CA glue and I clamped the living shit out of those things. I mean, I and I was just I don't know. Just out of I don't know. I just clamped the shit out of them and let them sit for about an hour. And, you know, it was, you know, this is how you have to do it, son. You know, you got to climb up there, you know. those remember Like about an hour later, and I go to go clean them up and kind of grind out the glue around the edges. And those mothers just popped right off. Like, like there was no glue in them. And I was like, I started tripping out. So I started phoning friends, right? I called, uh, call brandy didn't answer. I called you. And then you had text me back, you know, like, did you call? I was like, yeah, yeah, I'm in need here, buddy. Like this is a joke. What are you doing?
00:15:26
Speaker
taking Saturdays off now since you retired, but, uh, he, uh, it was told you about it. And I'm like, yeah, what did I do? Like, and it was very simple, man. And at first we were kind of like, I don't know. I don't know. And then you're like, dude, you squeezed all the glue out. You know what? You're fucking right. Cause those skills were clean as shit. I had, I didn't have any, any glue on them at all anymore. They, they all came out the sides and sealed around the side, as soon as I ground that off, they just popped right off. You don't have this problem if it's like wood to, because there's always like pores and stuff in the wood, but I've had this happen before where I've, um, squoze, squeeze, squeeze glue between G10 too much. And it just comes, you just squeeze it all out and there's nothing left. Yeah. it Totally like, cause I mean, it was like, I'm looking, I'm like, there's no, there,
00:16:25
Speaker
There's nothing here. So it made all the sense in the world and I felt stupid, but, you know, I redid them and they, you know, I just use some hand pressure instead and. It's okay to clamp them. Just don't like. I wrenched on them. I got the incredible Hulk on them. and Yeah. That was stupid, but so that was cool though. Um, you figured it out. Oh, I'm not. Yeah. You told me what was up. So I appreciate it. Dennis for the safe. Um, only cause I've done that before. Yeah. Well, I mean, that's how this all happens, right? But any, anytime you guys are in, you know, you need, uh, some tips about doing something stupid called tag along Tyrell. Yeah.
00:17:14
Speaker
Cause I've made all the dumb mistakes. Yeah. I'm still making them so. Yeah. But yeah, that's, that's pretty much what I got done. that day mess around to shape the handles up and I made it. Yeah, maybe I shouldn't say that. Yeah, I shouldn't say that. I wore all my PPE all day long.
00:17:40
Speaker
ah Jared, see, you're not going to make 50 if you keep doing that. I know that was stupid. Well, it's just I'm going to do this real quick. I'm going to do this real quick. I'm just going to zip, zip, zip, zip. And then I'm fucking stuck at the grinder and I'm like, I should really have a respirator on right now. Yeah. And so anyway, yeah we're we're all, and I'm trying to be very conscious of it. That's why I'm like getting to the point where my respirator is always around my neck. And if I'm not wearing it, I can take it off the top of my head and it just sits there. So it's not like a chore to go get it or something. So I'm trying to change my habit, make it a habit. Um,
00:18:23
Speaker
Uh, a little more than it has been. Yeah. So, but if you're grinding shit like G10 and car, there's like really no excuse. There's really no excuse. So plus I have that diversiflow, you know, which is odd. It, I was talking to somebody about it. Like, is it a pain in the ass to get on? I'm like, no, it's, it's super simple, but it doesn't matter what it is for me. Like if it's changing a fucking tooling arm, I want to think of another process to do it. If it's going to walk across the shop to put the damn respirator on, you know, sometimes it's just, you know, too much. So yeah, it's for me. One of the things I'm seriously contemplating, like buying another adjustable rest just so I can put it at a constant angle. And I don't have to, because that, that is like one of those.
00:19:15
Speaker
like, it's like a two minute thing where I have to adjust the rest. Cause I'm doing false edges or something like that. And then, and then I got to square it up again. Cause I'm going to grind and then later on I do something else and I need to like, yeah, maybe I should just buy one or put a little jig on my rest or something. But yeah, I mean to everything sounds great, but you run out of space in your shop, but Yeah, it's amazing how lazy we are when it comes down to like, we have this, this beautiful machine, so versatile with all kinds, you know, built for our ability to adapt and change processes quickly. And it becomes too much, even with two grinders now. I know. I know.
00:20:02
Speaker
But present and this week, I um well, I guess last week now finished the karambit, which was fun.

Knife Crafting and YouTube Insights

00:20:10
Speaker
Beautiful, dude. That came out awesome. Yeah. Yeah. And I i was I was going to like I was going to do two of them. I probably could have sold them instantly, but I have a commission for a kumai buoy, the buoy that I have to do. So I figured I would do that as well. So and it's looking incredible. So I'm very happy about that, but yeah, I got that, um, Karambit actually it was shipped out today. Um, so made the sheets this morning. It turned out I shouldn't, I didn't even take a picture of it. I was just trying to get it out of the shop. Um, I should have taken a picture, but, um, yeah, it turned out really nice. I got that out. Um, what else did I do last week? I, you know, I, got, I felt, you know, you get those days when you're, you feel super productive.
00:21:01
Speaker
And, uh, I was forging the other day. I needed to make some Damascus for a future project. And while, ah while the forge is heating up, I'm like, Oh, I got to fix this little thing on my grinder. Like the bucket holder was messed up. So I wanted to fix that. And then while I'm using the, and you saw it in the karambit build while I'm using the kiss blocks, the bill, it's too wide. The bill gets stuck. And then. I said, screw it. And then between those, the the first stack and then the restack, I fix my kiss blocks. So I read, I've been talking about this forever, putting kiss blocks where I can slide one and a half inch square tube over a little holder and it'll top out on the top of the, the top of the press. You follow? Instead of like the little kiss blocks. So, and now.
00:21:59
Speaker
kiss blocks of any height are much easier to make because I just have to cut off a piece of, of, um, one and a half inch tube, which I always have lying around because I use those for tool arms for the sharpening attachment. So I always have one and a half inch yeah square tube lying around. So that was cool. Got a bunch of stuff done. Um, yeah. So, and then, yeah, made some Damascus and then, uh, we had a little forging project yesterday. Uh, which was cool. That was a lot of fun. Yeah. We, uh, in a while. Yeah. We, you you haven't even been over in a long time. So we did, um, we did that this basket. We've split. Uh, so we each took our halves and, uh, and drew that out to a knife. yeah Um, yeah, you, yeah, you did a chef knife that looks pretty cool. Yeah, that was pretty cool. I haven't, uh, I haven't done that. Um,
00:23:00
Speaker
It's always been just like forging them to a, to a billet and then doing the stock removal. But I thought it was pretty cool that, you know, I've never made a feather, but having to, uh, you know, forge the, the tips together, you know, get that forge weld going. And then while we were at it, we just kinda roughly it's, I mean, it's by far not forged to shape or anything, but, um, it's in a lot better situation than, uh, other billets have been. So I'm excited about it. I think it's going to be a monster too. I was just looking at it the other day or yesterday today. so yeah And you fully forged that thing on the press. Yeah. Like you didn't, you didn't touch it on the anvil, right? Nope. Yeah. Well, i except when we use the guillotine just to do that little cut, but yeah, before we press down the handle, but, uh, yeah, no, I'm excited. And I drew my down into, um, a big dagger. So I'm going to be making a big,
00:23:58
Speaker
12, 13 inch dagger, um, which I think, um, I'm still thinking I kept it really thick. Cause I'm thinking I'm going to do a double hollow grind on it, which I've never done. I've never done a hollow grind. I mean, I've done fullers, but I've never hollow ground an edge before. So you're going to, you're going to do your first hollow grind on a dagger. Yeah. That's smart. Hey, go big or go home, right? I guess. I mean, you made a YouTube channel doing all this stuff, but that sounds crazy. I mean, that's, that's four hollows. I'm not a genius, but Hey, that's how to get it right. Three, four. Yeah. That's four, four of them. Yeah. You you get some practice. ah Yeah. Yeah. I mean, how hard can it be?
00:24:55
Speaker
I've actually heard they're they're a little bit easier because once, unlike a flat grind, once once you get that hollow created, it just sits there. It just wants to sit in that little hollow. So it's not, it's actually, I've heard it they're easier than flat grinds, but we're going to find out. I want to be there. I'm thinking about all the the kind, positive reinforcement words I could say while you're screaming. cussing because it got away from you one time. Well, especially on a dagger and daggers are pitched to grind. So, uh, but I mean, I'm, I'm, I'm excited about that one. Uh, that'll be my next build video. Uh, I'm not doing a build video on the buoy, um, but on the dagger, I will. And I'm really excited about the guard and the handle on that one. I mean, I love the steel that we did for the blade, but the whole ensemble of the guard, and I'm not going to tell you guys what it is, but
00:25:53
Speaker
The whole ensemble I think is going to be nice. Is that, is that the one that I saw? Yeah. That we were talking about? Nice. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I thought it was, we started with a basket weave feather, but we're having now it's like a basket-ish weave-ish kind of pattern. I know. Cause we stretch the shit out of it. Yeah. but And that's, Uh, that's totally my fault. Cause when I was thinking basket weave, I made a, you know, a, a perfect but perfect proportional basket. We've totally not thinking that we were going to draw this out, which was a dumb mistake. I should have made it a basket weave, but before I split it, I should have squished it down to rectangles so that by the time I drew it out, it was back to square, but yep
00:26:51
Speaker
I didn't do that. So this basket weave is all stretched out. I think to the point that you're not going to be able to tell it's a basket weave. It just looks like a cool pattern. Yeah, which is fine. It definitely looks cool. It looked, uh, you tested the, uh, etched on the, on the dagger. Um, I haven't seen mine, but yeah, it's definitely, I'm glad I, we, I did that real with the pattern with how it was intended to look. Otherwise we'd have no historical reference for that. Right. Yeah. But, um, yeah, I'm excited to see how that guy turns out. So yeah I got to get through this buoy build first. Um, and then I'll, I'll see, but other thing that, um, I'm working on what you saw, uh, which will be this week's triple T video. I finally installed new shop lighting in the shop.
00:27:46
Speaker
Oh, that's right. um You know, it's, I get these, like, literally multiple times a day, I'll get, Hey, do you want to help us sell this product? And it's like, women's shoes or something ridiculous. like It's usually like, honestly, and and that always starts with, we love your channel, we love your content, we think this would go so well. And it's like, dog bowls or like something stupid that, you know, would not never make sense. But and most times I don't even click the link. I don't even see what the product is. But this time I actually did. And they sell shop lighting and you'll see it in the video. But these are like industrial shop lights. And I said, OK, send me six of them. I could have got away with like three of them. They are so powerful.
00:28:43
Speaker
I've got them turned down to the minimum they will go. And if, as Jared knows, you kind of can't look up at the ceiling because you kind of see spots after. So you see the new lights and it's bright as hell in there. they Perfect. Came out great. That ah place used to be a freaking dudgeon. I'm not kidding. sure In the corners for sure. like oh Only place that was well lit was your little the workbench by the grid. That's because of the pillow lights for the Yeah, everywhere else you were kind of struggling. He had, you know, some kind of secondary light camp, a clamp or something like that. But yeah, so we go out, he pops them on. I'm like, wow, but you can't help. if it's but Again, feels stupid, because you can't help but look up. And every time you look up, how how round are they? Like,
00:29:36
Speaker
14 inches. They're 14 inches round. So, and there's six of them in there, right? So you start looking up, you look at one and you get this like, you know, big old halo above spots. And then you're like, Oh, right. And then you go try to look at another one. Now you got two halos. And I found myself, I'm like fucking tracking down all the lights. And not only, I just, there's six halos all around. I'm like, Dennis, this isn't working for me. He's like, we'll stop looking at the lights dummy, but It took a minute though, but once you kind of, you know, yeah i'm usedized but each of those lights goes to 200 Watts and I have them set at 120 and then they're super bright. So, um, yeah, if you're looking for shop lights, these are pretty inexpensive and solid. Like I was very happy with the quality. They're all metal. They're not cheap plastic. They're solid metal lights. They're, they're heat rated. They're outdoor rated.
00:30:32
Speaker
Um, really nice. So anyway, so detect that video did you wire them to from the ceiling down or you just went one to the switch and then wired? yeah i say like I went, these, these have plugs on them. Okay. So daisy chain them. I, I actually installed outlets, a couple of outlets on the ceiling and then I wired those outlets to my switch. Gotcha. So it's a little janky cause you can see wire on the ceiling. Cause I just. Tacked it up there. I, in case I ever move, I want to be able to like pull those lights down and cause they're plugs. I can just unplug them. Like that's what I, I didn't want to hardwire them and go into the ceiling or anything like that. Gotcha. Yeah. How did the Krambit video do? Um, it's still in that. So I've dropped you guys some YouTube analytic knowledge here. When YouTube, um, first
00:31:32
Speaker
When you first do a video, right? You first put out a video. The first thing YouTube does is it starts testing it with your audience. And the most important thing at that point is click through rate. And I think the click through rate is every time the thumbnail for that video is put in front of someone, what is the percentage of time they clicked on it? That's like when I, when I open up YouTube, your channel is what they throw in front of me. If I click it, right? And it can be in searches, as suggestions, recommendations, ah your homepage. Yeah. Click-through rate is anytime it's put in front of you, did you click on it? So a really, really good video, like a viral video will be in the 10% range. That is like crazy, crazy high. Um, a great video will be in the six to 8%. And this is, I'm saying just when you started,
00:32:32
Speaker
Meaning rate, when you, the first four hours, what YouTube does is start sending it out to your subscribers. They want to see, do your subscribers like it? Cause they're, they're basically doing a test. And if your subscribers like it, then they'll start to to send it out. So the click through rate on this one was about four and a half. So still pretty good. I mean, anything under three is, you know, crap. Like they're not really going to, you're not going to get much traction. So it was four and a half. It's not terrible. It's not great, but it maintained that click through rate. And what, what happens is if the click through rate starts to drop, then we'll say, Oh, well, yeah, your viewers like it, but now it's dropping off the, the point where, you know, it's going to go viral or not. And I don't think this one is, but.
00:33:30
Speaker
where they will start to push it out to non viewers is around the four day mark and they will keep pushing it. YouTube will keep pushing the video as long as the click through rate stays above two and a half. As soon as it drops and you can, I've i've seen this on videos. where the impressions, that's the number of times they put it in front of somebody, the impressions will climb, climb, climb. And as soon as that inflection point of the click-through rate dropping below 2.5, all of a sudden YouTube says, oh, people don't like this video in as much. We're going to slow down impressions. So that's a long, a long answer to your question, meaning it's doing okay. We'll see what happens. Um,
00:34:22
Speaker
Tuesday, tomorrow, tomorrow, Wednesday, we'll see what happens. Okay. So that's how we YouTube works. At least that I've seen. Gotcha. But so it takes four days to know if you're gonna have a banger or not. ah Yeah. To know if I mean, you know, right away, if you're if your click through rate is shit, then you know, it's not going to do well. If your click through rate is like 10 or 11, I think on the on the my best video, which is the Katana, I think the click through rate was 11. Oh, wow. Um, the first couple of days. So I knew that video was going to go. I didn't know it was going to go that crazy, but I knew it was going to do well. Which one's that setting up now? That's the 13, 13 million ish around there. That's crazy. Yeah. 13 million suckers.
00:35:19
Speaker
Oh, my bad. Sorry. That's right.
00:35:26
Speaker
oh So i I'm gonna bust into this. I heard that. Hold on. Before we go there. I wanted to give Spencer ah from Heavy Forge a shout out. He responded to one of our posts last week and yeah for everybody that doesn't know, he had a an accident, I think at work, um screwed his ankle up or something like that. And he's been laid up for a while and
00:36:00
Speaker
He, he, he had said, you know, Hey guys, just want to give you, a you know, thank you guys for, you know, the, the podcasts and stuff like that. This one and a couple of other ones are, are all that's kind of keeping me going through this, you know, shitty time right now. So I wanted to make sure and shout them out and tell them we're thinking about them and hoping for a a speedy recovery. And, uh, you know, you'd be back up, uh, here in no time, buddy. But we got your back. I'll call Dennis all kinds of names. Double time while you're down. Well, that's that's a good lead in because um Spencer is the defending judge for the YouTube knife maker challenge because he won the last one. That's right. That's

Upcoming Challenges and Events

00:36:48
Speaker
right. So he's the defending judge in the
00:36:53
Speaker
apocalyptic challenge that we are announcing this week. So nice. Yeah. So it will start Friday. Watch the video. There'll be a video dropping Friday morning. I'll ah and also put a link to it on the YouTube. if You don't follow the YouTube knife maker. You to buy home YouTube. Sorry. Facebook group. Go join the Facebook group. You'll you watch the video, the announced video on my channel and a bunch of the guys will will do it. If you want to enter as a viewer, there are some unique rules in this one because this apocalyptic challenge, you have to use some reclaimed material as part of your build. So there's some special rules you're going to have to follow as far as entry. So make sure you read those before you start um because you're going to need to so stay, stay tuned um for that. So.
00:37:52
Speaker
Apocalyptic challenge will start this week. And I want to shout out a couple of those sponsors because they are sponsors of this podcast. Let me hear it. All right. So in fact, uh, two bastards, Texas Smithy and supplies there, uh, Frank, uh, Anita are putting up a hammer. So, uh, to any of the viewers or to the viewer that wins, they're going to get their own two bastards. hammer. Maybe it's going to be one of those fat peen hammers. Ain't it grand to have a fat peen in your hand? I can tell you it's fantastic. Yeah. So, uh, definitely, um, check out two bastards for all your hammer needs. They are doing well. Um, and, uh, they're also working with one of our other sponsors and a sponsor of the, uh, apocalyptic challenge, which is.
00:38:51
Speaker
My, uh, brother from another mother, uh, Mr. Lawrence Lake over a maritime knife supply. So, uh, Lawrence will be supplying some, uh, amazing gift certificates to maritime knife supply as part of the apocalyptic challenge. So, uh, get in it, get some stuff from maritime because Lawrence has it all. He does. He absolutely does. And I'm going to let you do the next one. Mr. Coy Baker. Before I go to Koi though, I do want to say that Lawrence is just about this community, sponsoring podcasts, sponsoring challenges, sponsoring projects, stuff like that. And he's also sponsoring the great lakes custom knife show, um, out in God, rich God, rich. I did this. Okay. Here we go in Ontario. It's Canada's largest knife show located on the picturesque shores of Lake Huron.
00:39:53
Speaker
and so proud of you. Oh my God, I could see you in the country. You're beaming. You're beaming right now, like your mind and some of the best talent in Canadian knife making community. Uh, follow the great lakes custom knives show or visit great lakes, custom knives show.com. And that event is a one day event taking place on August 17th. So if you're out in that area, make sure you go check that out and get in the show. If you're a maker and go sell some stuff. If you're not, go check it out. I wonder why it's only one day. That seems crazy. I don't know. um Noah was on full blast this week, and he was kind of talking about it a little bit to give a little more insight on why it was one day. um But I haven't finished the the episode yet. But he'll be out there. So go check those guys out. Yeah, I mean, that's, like I said, it's going to give me an excuse to back to Canada and maybe next year. Because my relatives are always bugging me to go back.
00:40:53
Speaker
So having a knife event makes me want to go back more. Yeah, you get a double-edged sword.
00:41:03
Speaker
you yeah Mr. Lord. Yeah, Lords does all of that good stuff and he cuts up steel for your Damascus. But if you don't want to do that, you got to go check out Baker Forged and Tool. He also carries Gatorpis to the elite etchant premade ready for you to just bang out some beautiful Damascus finishes. um But Koi has end cuts are back in stock.
00:41:36
Speaker
So if you haven't caught in on that, go get yourself some end cuts. And um if you're using the Baker Forge app, you get one day access earlier to all the drops, this one and all future drops as well. But it did see Koi do something really cool. And I meant to reach out to him to ask him a little bit more about it, but he is doing I put out a video of him twisting, um, a huge bar of steel with some, um, stuff from the world trade center. yeah did you that i I caught it, but I didn't reach out to him and find out what, what they were making, but I did, I did so read something about world trade center. Yeah. I think that's, that's amazing. What a, what a awesome way to, you know, put that stuff back, uh, on the circulation and, um, I think it's great. The, the bar, I saw a little etched on the end, dude. It's, it looked great, dude, but you know, that's the kind of stuff that our buddy Koi is getting into now. So make sure you go check out Baker forged and tool. And if you're going to make an order, go on ahead and use the discount code triple T 10 for 10% off your next purchase. That's right. In fact, on the Kerabit build, I had a guy ask me, Hey, what do you do with all those end cuts?
00:42:55
Speaker
I'm like, well, I'm saving those end cuts because I need them for guards and stuff like that, but go get some steel from Baker Forge and they sell end cuts. And I didn't even know that was before I even knew they're running these end cut and cuts were back. So it's probably good timing because I sent a guy to Koi just the other day. And Koi will also, Baker Forge will also be supplying ah prizes as well for the apocalyptic challenge. So, uh, there's a ton of gift certificates coming from both maritime and Baker forge, and you can get a hammer from, uh, from two bastards. So guys, you got to get on it. This is good stuff. Make sure you go check them out. Yeah.
00:43:47
Speaker
And, uh, the last sponsor on the apocalyptic challenge is, uh, MoSA, uh, and they supply mosaic pins. So, uh, they've been a sponsor, I think since the beginning. So, uh, thank you for MoSA, uh, sponsor in the event as well. Uh, and they'll supply a whole bunch of mosaic pins to the winners. You know how I know that's true? How? Because I still have my dagger pin.
00:44:15
Speaker
Well, maybe you should get off your butt and use it. I just like came across that the other day, I go, Oh, yeah, I was gonna do that. But yeah, I didn't do that. That was the first one. right Yeah. ah Yeah. Oh, um,
00:44:35
Speaker
I think that was the first one where we had, um, yeah, you had to use the pin in your build or something like that. Right. Was it the dagger one of the fantasy one? I don't remember. I think it was a dagger. Yeah, it could have been, but, uh, um, since we're doing sponsors, we're going to get on, uh, get these all done. Now, when I finished the karambit, first thing I did put a bunch of Pelican paste on it. So, uh, go check out, um, Pelican paste. and get yourself some soft wax, hard wax, hand salve, soap, you name it. Travis has got it over at Pelican Paste. The reason that was really important for me for this Karambit build is because those clear acrylic scales are not epoxied on because you want to see the Damascus. So I had to make sure I put a nice coat of wax on that knife before the scales went on. Make sure nothing gets under those. So go get yourself some
00:45:33
Speaker
Some Pelican paste used the discount code triple T 10 over there. Get yourself save yourself some money. Absolutely. He's got the Pelican oil, too. And. I used the Pelican soap. Oh, this again. Yeah. Fantastic. Fantastic. Claim me right up. All that gritty little pumice. You said walnut shells. Was that you? I said I didn't know what it was if it was. This wasn't Walnutty, dude. This was extra special. But yeah, I use the soap for the first time and it was fantastic. So if you haven't tried that, make sure you go get that and get yourself all clean. Yeah, you're extra dirty, so you needed it. to Yeah, I haven't taken it in the shower yet, but it's going to happen soon as we get the scent.
00:46:33
Speaker
Oh yeah. Make sure you go check out ah Travis over at Pelican pace. So you know what else has happened this last week? Yeah, the Olympics and i I'm going

Reflections on Hobbies and Sports

00:46:47
Speaker
to go out there. People are going to, I can't believe you're going to say this. I think the Olympics are boring. My my wife is forcing me to watch them. I am. I am not an Olympic guy. ah I don't love watching the Olympics. I'm Jared. I know you like the Olympics, so I know you you're just waiting to say something. I enjoyed the Olympics was fine. There's some controversy going on it, but I give no about that, but I do want to let everybody know that somebody. Who has no interest in the Olympics?
00:47:26
Speaker
I just got to tell you a little story. So once upon a time, there was a little boy named Dennis Terrell grew up in, in Canada, in the Toronto-ish Ontario area. And this boy had nothing to do. So he set out with an Olympic dream to conquer the parallel bars. He also played rugby. And while he was at it, took up twy condo and became a Kung Fu master. ah and And through all of that training, through all of that training and hard work, he ended up with a disdain for competition. Oh, no, I love competition. I just don't like the Olympics. Get the fuck out of here, dude. I got a call from Mrs. Tyrell. She's telling me Dennis just said that he can do the parallel bars. And I was like, I couldn't. I said, I've done. I can't do them now.
00:48:23
Speaker
I know. This is just too much, man. yeah Is there anything you can do? I mean, serious. We were just busting his balls about like every time we say something like, Hey, you ever done parkour off of, uh, you know, some tall buildings in Tokyo? Dennis is like, Oh yeah, I did that before.
00:48:42
Speaker
have You ever flown to the moon? Oh yeah. I used to live there for five years. Yes. There is not a single thing. This guy can't do even the Olympics. I mean, he just, whatever, I guess I did track and feel in junior high. And I did the parallel bars, which was the high jump and the long jump because I'm tall. And for some reason, the parallel bars, everything else. No parallel bar. How did you even have parallel bars at your high school? I'm i'm at my ghetto at school. We didn't have any opportunity. I did do track and field though.
00:49:19
Speaker
This is our junior high, not even our high school. This is like, Oh my God. eight They didn't have sports in ours.
00:49:29
Speaker
drove up california you lived in the hood that's That's right. We did, man. And our, and our pool was a big fucking flower pot.
00:49:39
Speaker
Off limits, do not go to the pool. You'll drown in dirt. Oh, that's funny. I was dying. i did Thank you, Kim. That was beautiful things. But I do have another interesting bit of information about... Oh, jeez. Yes, I do have another wonderful fun fact about our good friend, Mr. Tyrell here. i Dennis, did you ever play poker? Yes, I played a lot of poker. Like how much poker? Like is this what like this was your passion before knife making? I played a lot of poker. i There was a point where I i was playing multiple hours a day of online poker. Plus, that's a person poker.
00:50:24
Speaker
Well, I know a place where you can go if that ever comes back. The first step to admitting is, uh, so anyways, I met this retirement party for Dennis a couple of weeks back and one of his buddies kind of, was telling you know, said Dennis is yeah he's really good. You know, the knife, he does all this stuff. I'm like, yeahs yeah, he's, yeah, he's good. He's great. It's great. He's lame. And he goes, yeah, well, before he started doing the knife making, he used to play a lot of poker. And I'm like, yeah, that's cool. And I have zero interest here on my side. But he's like, yeah, did you know that Dennis wrote a book about how to play poker? I go, what? I know. I never published it. It was a collection of my thoughts. And when I learned that, Dennis, who takes the time to write those thoughts down, especially about a game like poker?
00:51:16
Speaker
ah that it was back when poker was a big boom uh the world series of poker was on every channel the world poker tour was on every channel it was a big thing back then so oh my god i i have to get my hands on this literary i was just wondering behind me on the bookshelf to see if i have it because i do have a printed copy of it but i don't have the soft copy anymore so and't know where hu well i have a but I have a bookshelf this wide of just poker books. Oh my God. That's hilarious. And I'm the guy that shows up to Reno last week, never playing craps and just walks up and it's like, teach me how to play. does Spend years in a cave with barely any ignorant internet signal, trying to research how to do it before even fucking stepped into a that's your poker table. Yeah. So, hey I don't know.
00:52:13
Speaker
Any of you guys got a poker game? I'm in. Yeah. I got to get this book. I just want to know how it's. I want to just want to know how it starts off. What is the intro? These are cards. There's 52.
00:52:31
Speaker
no Oh, goodness. All right. Let's move for a change. There's endless entertainment with you, buddy. I heard you got a little message from Toby.

Podcast Community and Humor

00:52:43
Speaker
I did. it Yeah, I heard it. Yeah, I shared it. I think Toby's pretty gay for Jared after hearing that message. and You know what? I'm pretty gay for Toby too. That's all that that came up. Now he's perked up. He's excited because hopefully he's listening and he's like, Oh, they said my name. I got on very good.
00:53:08
Speaker
No, finish. no no I got a very sweet message from Toby saying that he was listening to the podcast and and the what else did he say? He also said you had a nice voice. I have a nice voice. Yeah. So that's actually come up quite a bit here lately for whatever reason. So, and the funny part is that I've shared this, like my wife is super supportive, but in her own very special way. Right. And it's, it's nothing that if I shared with you like, the way she shows support, it wouldn't come across as support. So I just happened after Toby said that message, I was like, you know, a lot of people think I have a great voice, babe. And she's like, oh, my fucking God. Like, Jared can't get his head through doorways now. Oh, my God, it is not like that. But I was just I was just busting, you know, messing around with her and then.
00:54:03
Speaker
And sure shit, I share that with her. And she's like, I see this is not going in my favor. So I'm like, Hey, whatever. And then it was we're listening ah to the the ah the work for it this weekend. And ah my voice came up on that too. Nick had said he's been sending me these um reels on Facebook of these people that are doing prank calls. And apparently, um, and one of the guys, he kind of sounds like me. He's like, this dude sounds, this dude sounds just like you. And I'm like, you know, I grave enough but that's not i can't get the gravel. Sorry. Sorry. pick one that But, um, and I was like, I listened to it and I'm like, holy shit that does, but the funny part was so somebody
00:54:47
Speaker
paid this radio show to prank their buddy. But so it's a guy that sounds like me and he's pranking his his buddy Dennis.
00:54:57
Speaker
I thought that was pretty cool. But yeah, that was actually the guy's name, right? Yeah. The guy, the guy that was getting pranks name was Dennis. Oh, really? Yeah. It was pretty good. I'll, I'll, I remember I'll share it to you. All right. But yeah, but I did want to say, so I was talking to Toby. I was like, you know, thanks for the message. Really appreciate it. Appreciate the sport and gay for you too. Um, but he, the a couple of weeks back, he and, uh, owner were talking about
00:55:32
Speaker
God, what was it? Like thrift stores or something like that. yeah and And owner was going just like he does not, he didn't agree with it. He thought it was a scam and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And and Toby's like, well, yeah, dude, they have to like sell this stuff to make a profit to donate their non-profit. So they got to you know sell this stuff to donate to their charity or, you know, buy and owners, that's bullshit and blah, blah, blah. i'm I'm laughing, right? I think it was a funny conversation, right? And during this thing, the owner's going on and on and on. And and Toby, he goes, I think this is the greatest podcast line in the history of the whole world. He goes, you need a hug, Kaggler. You're a broken boy underneath all that.
00:56:16
Speaker
I cannot tell you. I have listened. I've rewound and listened to the way that he said it. It is the most shit talking, caring, is compassionate, asshole-ish comment I have ever heard. I think it's pure gold, dude. So shout out to the ah Fire and Steel podcast guys. good Yeah, those guys are fun. And I don't know why the fucking Kaggler does not like you. I've never heard him say one single good word about you.
00:56:44
Speaker
I was always, uh, team Kaggler, but then I got nothing. I got no love back. So I, yeah, I don't know. like favorite He should have come to, uh, um, to blade show and we wouldn't bust his balls. Yeah. The fucking triple twat. the tripledwa fun ah love it I think he's mad. He didn't win the last challenge. Yeah, he could be. and Toby's great. That's it. Team Toby. Team Toby. Yeah. Oh, man. That was good stuff. So, yeah. All right. We got that out of the way. I also wanted to bring up Bob Gore.
00:57:30
Speaker
i don't I don't even know what to say about that. Jared calls me to- Have you seen this post from Bob? but I'm like, no. I just hadn't looked at my phone. I look at my phone and there's a post on Instagram that's like, I know Bob did it in Jess, but it's like, it's a little, but it's a little spooky. the the best so yeah the The deal is he made a bunch of these mugs with fucking my face, but ah like ah predominantly all of Dennis' grill all over these mugs, and he was offering to sell the mugs and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, and it was a joke. and He's just you know showing tribute to to one of his mentors. It was really cool. It was funny. right The fucking comment that had me on the fucking floor was, oh my God, for a moment I thought it was like a memorial to Dennis. like Something happened to him.
00:58:27
Speaker
I read that one. Was that Noah or something? I don't know who it was, dude, but I was done. I was like, if you scroll back fast enough, you think that's you if you passed on, buddy. ah And Bob's got a coffee mug shrine in your memory. Bob did some research. Like it wasn't just like the pictures that everyone sees. Like he went through videos and he took some snaps and he like, he did some work on that. Yeah, that was pretty cool. Good on you, Bob. That was really cool. But yeah, I thought the the memorial thing was hilarious. I couldn't get enough. no Oh, jimmy
00:59:11
Speaker
man. Oh, that was cool. And then I was good. ahead joy No, I was moving topics. Go ahead. go on yeah no So anyways, while I was talking to about the the work for it, a couple of weeks back, I was listening to it in about like a minute and 47 minutes, 47 seconds into this thing. I don't know. I, I, I happen to, I, I'll oftentimes be in traffic, right? So at a, at a crawl, listening to the podcast and all of a sudden it goes quiet. And then all of a sudden I hear this. I'm like, what the fuck just happened? So I rewind it. I'm like,
00:59:53
Speaker
I'm like, somebody just shit their pants on the podcast. I'll work for it. oh So I, so I text Brent and I'm like, dude, did somebody just rip ass on the podcast? And I, and I sent him to the clip right there and he's like, yup. Wait, is this last week's few weeks back? Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah. I did hear that. And they just glazed over it. They it just glazed right over. They didn't say anything. So Brent ended up sending that my my video over to to Nick and then Nick is like, yeah, it was me.
01:00:32
Speaker
knew it So at the end of this at the end of this week's podcast, he copped to it, right? He said, I just want to apologize. You know, that was me. So I messaged him and I go, hey, buddy, I just want to let you know that it was ah my video that Brent had sent you because I heard it. And and I just and I think it's it's hilarious. Right. And he goes, yeah, yeah, yeah. It happens. And he goes, but my my the explanation was that He says that people are, they're telling him that he has to like lean into the microphone when he talks. Cause he's hard to hear. He leaned in a little. And got a little elevation out there and lift his cheek. And then I look at him, I was like, well, since I'm the one that noticed it, does that make me a fart sniffer? You're a fart knocker. I'm a fart sniffer.
01:01:27
Speaker
He sends me this video of him out in the woods and says, you know, I'm out in the woods. So if I do it out here, I'm like, so if a pickle farts in the woods, does anybody, it doesn't really make a sound.
01:01:40
Speaker
Oh man. I don't know. So that was pretty good. i I thought that was hilarious. I love how that came full circle and good on you for admitting that Nick. the We all knew it was Nick. It's all right. It takes a big man. I thought it was Brian, but whatever. Which Brian? Oh yeah. I'll let that be your decision. It sounded like a pickle fart to me. yeah That was good. Good stuff there. And I also got another message from somebody saying that they bought a pair of Brunt boots because of our deal. They said if they don't sponsor you, they should.
01:02:18
Speaker
Cause those boots are bad ass and I really enjoy them. So, uh, and I will, I'm going to give them a free plug here that, uh, you came over with those slip-ons to the shop yesterday and it, you know, if you've never been in the shop with me, I'm, I'm lazy. I go in and out of the shop, you know, to go to the bathroom and I always have to take my boots off. My wife yells at me. So mine are always like loosely laced. They look like they're going to fall off my feet at any moment because mine are the traditional laced up ones. Jared comes with these fancy slip-ons that I got to get a pair. So, uh, yeah, I love Brent Brunt boots worm at maker camp. That is, if they can go through the storm of maker camp last year, they're the best boots on the planet. Yeah. I, I love these omens. I love them. They're so comfortable. Like Chelsea style. I have the other, the bulldogs, I think they're called a little higher. Um,
01:03:15
Speaker
And they were fine. There nothing wrong with them, but I'm more really into these, these omens. And, um, I think they're fantastic, super comfortable and really easy to get in and out of. So that's my speed right there. But if you're interested in it, you can use the code echo blades 10 for $10 off your first purchase of $60 or more. So go check it out. And if you're going to go buy them, use the code, just use the code. It saves some money. Use the code. Echoblades 10. Maybe I'll get some and use your code. Yeah, do it. Echoblades 10. All right. So I thought that was cool. Yeah. Every every now and again. and So it seems like we got a six listener. That's all that came down to. That's what I took away from that. Oh, one thing I did want to mention I got in my notes here. I forgot to add in the Karambit build, one of my ah patrons and listeners, viewer,
01:04:13
Speaker
It's been around for a while. Kelly Naley, he's the one that supplied the acrylic to me, um, for the, uh, the handles for the Krambit. In fact, he sent me that acrylic a while ago and I've already used it it on another build. So, uh, thank you Kelly for, uh, sending that to me. Uh, I'm putting it to good use. Yeah. That dude, that is really cool. It was a great idea. Great build, great everything. That's really cool. Yeah. It worked out well. Yeah. Hey, should we do some, uh, maker spotlight? We can. I do have to get through one more thing. Oh, do tell. Do tell. So it just happened to be around my birthday, but so the other, I think it was around, um,
01:05:07
Speaker
4th of July, I saw, uh, Brent put out a video of him making some stakes with the, uh, steak Turner. And, uh, I looked at it and it was watching it and he goes, Oh, this was made by my, but dear friend, uh, Steve Cal from Cal Bar and works. And I was insanely jealous. I was like, I need me a Cal Bar and work steak Turner. So I reached out to Steve and said, Hey buddy, I love you, miss you. and
01:05:40
Speaker
That's how all good conversations start. Steve is a fucking amazing, amazing dude. He is so awesome. And and he's an absolutely badass blacksmith. And he sent me this. I know you guys are going to see it. I'll do a post on it. yeah But he sent me a steak turner and bronzed it up. And like I am just absolutely just mesmerized by it. when you If I was to hold this thing three years ago, I'd have zero idea what what it takes to to do this, but it's it's tapered, it's turned, it's twisted, it's folded up on itself. It's got some, I mean, it is just awesome. It's got scroll work on it. Yeah, it's nice. It's just amazing. i am I love this thing, Steve. Thank you so much. That was very sweet.
01:06:32
Speaker
And, uh, I'll be sure to send something your way. It won't be this cool, but that's for sure. This is just, uh, I am so stoked to do it. So I'll be, uh, I don't care how hot it is next weekend. We are flipping some stakes with the, uh, Kalbar and works steak Turner. Awesome. Yeah, it's nice. Good job, Steve. Don't, don't send Dennis one. You hear that Spencer? He does not deserve a steak Turner. All right. Fuck Dennis.
01:07:02
Speaker
oh That was on the couch. This on Dennis for you, Spence. There you go. That's all I got. All right. Yeah, let's go. Let's talk about some more people. All right. And I don't know who this mystical one is here. I didn't put this here. Maybe I put it there from last week. Maybe. All right. But we're going to do that one. I'll save that one for next week since I'm not prepared. um Who I have this week is someone that I really appreciate. um who is Eliard Blacksmithing. And if you're not familiar with um his Instagram, you definitely need to go take a look. Some of the most spectacular Mosaic, Damascus in general, but he specializes in Mosaics. um He's down Australia, Tasmania. um And the most impressive thing about his work is he does all his Damascus on a fly press.
01:08:02
Speaker
manually on a Fly Press. And it is some of the most amazing Damascus around. um Just really incredible work. not Not that he needs another follower, but I just followed him because I have seen a video of this dude using that press. That is impressive. See what I did there?
01:08:27
Speaker
Yeah, I just and and but something to to be said for a manual machine like this, maybe it's the control he gets. Maybe it's just he's super skillful, which I'm sure is definitely a part of it. But um just the symmetry on his Damascus is incredible. um He's got like, like whatever 15 posts down or something. He's got a picture of some end cuts of some mosaics that are just spectacular. So if you don't, he's got 28,000 followers. So if you don't already follow him, add to that list, go check out Elliott blacksmithing. Uh, we'll put it in the show notes. Yeah. Some great stuff. Beautiful knives too, man. Oh my God. Oh yeah. Like, like, dare I say master Smith quality knives on a lot of these. Um, yeah, just amazing. Who you got. I have.
01:09:28
Speaker
And I don't know how I came across this guy, but I did. And it's called psychedelic underscore garage underscore knives. His name is Jonathan Schubert, and he is an 18 year old knife maker from Germany. And he has 723 followers. And I was just looking at this stuff. And I was like, this is really awesome. Some beautiful stuff. And then I kind of reread his profile and realized that it said 18 year old. And I was like, yeah, I missed out on on getting started a lot sooner because this dude is killing it. Yeah, that go my with the nickel. And yeah, really, really nice. Beautiful.
01:10:24
Speaker
And the one further down, where is it? Oh shit, I lost it now. Yeah, just amazing, amazing work. Some beautiful handles too. So yeah, great job for 18. I mean, for for a 40 year old, these knives are amazing, but for an 18 year old, just so impressive. Yeah, jaw drop, good stuff. Did he make a hammer too? Yeah, yeah, he does hammers. Um, I'm seeing a little Ben Camone influence on some of these, um, which makes sense. I think he's over there too, but, um, yeah, really nice. Really good stuff. Yeah. So if you're not checking out, uh, Jonathan over at psychedelic underscore garage, underscore knives, make sure you go do that. Do yourself a favor and give this dude a follow and check his stuff out. Really cool stuff. Yeah, man.
01:11:22
Speaker
ah Those are good ones. Yeah, really nice stuff. So what you got coming up this week and it's been fun.
01:11:33
Speaker
You know, I haven't really thought I got to finish the, uh, on the finished stretch for the, uh, the Oakland A's, uh, intrepid 2.0. Um, and I have a lot, I have a, of course. Oh, what are you doing for your birthday? That's what I really want to know. Oh, well, I'm going to a concert, a concert. Yeah. Taylor Swift. so No, unfortunately no.
01:12:05
Speaker
She was here in December. It's a bummer. I would go. I'm not driven. We're going to see Chris Brown. I don't know who that is. Mm hmm. I figured. And I know you don't know what the movement is either. This is just. It is gracious. Chris Brown. Was that the guy that was married to? um No, he's no one's got Bobby Brown. Oh, Jesus.
01:12:36
Speaker
He's an R and&B singer. He had a little rough patch back in the day. He's got some less than attractive history stuff, but great singer. Love him. Like the stuff. And anyways, my wife ah likes his music too. So he happened to be in town on my birthday. I think this is a gift that is more. I'm just happened to be on my birthday. So that's what we're going to do. And I'm going to smile about it and love it and gig out and have a good time. You said in San Francisco? Where? I think it's in Oakland. Oh, all right. That's better actually.
01:13:15
Speaker
it's clear you know I'm old. I'm all about how far do I have to go and how late do I have to stay up? No, man. That's because you grew up in Canada, man. you got to It's really important about the location so you can get in and out, right? like Take part. Safety is you know was a concern in some areas. So yeah, we're going to Oakland. But that's what we're doing. I'm looking forward to that. And I don't know. Other than that, I guess it is my birthday week. And I don't know. We'll probably do something this weekend. Hopefully, I have my my kids over. and
01:13:52
Speaker
use my steak turner and chill out and try to make some knives. I really don't know if it's going to heat up on us again. So I am in luck. Yeah, we're having a pool party Saturday, so I wouldn't mind it being a little warm on Saturday, but we'll see. Oh, yeah, I do have an invite to that, too. You do have to stop by. Yeah. I don't want to break a tradition. It's a kid's birthday party, so I don't know. I was there last year. I was there last year. I was there last year. Memphis's party? Yep. Oh, I don't remember. Yep. My help set up. Huh. Look at you.
01:14:32
Speaker
Not really. ah I think I watched you set up yeah probably in the pool. Yeah. So yeah, I don't know. That's pretty much, uh, what's happening. I'm gonna do my, uh, my birthday thing with the fam and hopefully, uh, finish up a couple of builds here. And that's it. I may be going away next week again for work. Geez, you never the work. You're always on the go. Yeah. This is work though. I go back to Idaho and shmooze, do what I love to do and go talk business. Kissing babies and shaking hands. That's it buddy.
01:15:17
Speaker
and Oh yeah. I think I'm going to, I'm going to Teach my stepdaughter how to make a leaf or, uh, maybe a coffee scoop. We'll see. I'll have some fun with her in the shop. She wants to do, she wants to make a knife, but I know she's, she's not going to have the attention span for that. So, uh, if I yeah make a leaf and a coffee scoop, that might be enough. Yeah, that's cool. Yeah. Was the last time you guys, uh, she's been, she recently moved or she's been gone for a while. Oh, she'd been gone for a while. Um, yeah, her and her husband live in Colorado Springs.
01:15:51
Speaker
Oh, that's right. That's where you always go. That's

Party Plans and Social Gatherings

01:15:53
Speaker
right. Yeah. But she's coming back. He's not coming back. Um, he's staying to take care of the billions of pets that they have. Um, but, uh, yeah, she's coming for the party. So that's good. Nice. Yeah. So that's cool. Hope you have a good time. I, uh, we'll have a host full on Saturday, Matt. You're welcome over. Thanks. Appreciate it. All right, man. I'll be partying. I'll probably be fucking hammered off of 15 sparkle of water. So you run it back and forth to the bathroom. You don't want to see me how crazy I get after like, yeah what am I drinking right now? I'm drinking peach water. I'm feeling tipsy. Yeah. Peach. I hate anything with peaches in it. look Yeah. Get out of here.
01:16:47
Speaker
All right. Mr. I hate the Olympics and I'm a professional at every sport. That's right. Don't you forget it. I'm not going to let you get out of here. We're talking about your triple T though. I do need to know that about what the triple T episode. Oh, we already talked about it. What you talking about the, Oh, that's next week's episode.

Laser Equipment Surprise and Advice Request

01:17:11
Speaker
So, uh, I'll give give you guys a little hint. Um, the folks over at X tool. who have a good relationship with, um, sent me another laser. And this time, uh, it's a big one. Uh, and I was, that's part of the surprise. Frickin laser B. In fact, actually, if, um, if folks out there, if you have a fiber laser, I got some questions. Um, so it is a fiber laser. I did some matching with a fiber laser.
01:17:48
Speaker
And it actually, instead of like, lasering, engraving into the steel, of course, whenever I put something out of the laser, the first thing I do is crank every setting up to max. And, you know, cause I'm a guy, that's what we do. And, uh, but when I did that, it actually embossed the, and it's probably like half a millimeter thick, like it's, It see what I did there. All the Canadian stuff, uh, metric. Uh, but you can feel it's in, it's raised. So I did my logo and it's raised. I'm like, is that normal? Is it like, and it's very, very solid. It like it feels like scale, but, and it's rough, but, um, you're saying it added material to it. Like, yeah, it literally looks like it added material. Like, ah and it's rain. You could feel it. Like you can definitely feel it.
01:18:47
Speaker
And I was very surprised that it did that. So any of you that have a fiber laser, is that a normal thing when you crank the settings up? I mean, this is only a 20 watt fiber, but at the max dot duration, the max power at like 500 dpi, this thing like embossed my logo instead of etching it down into the steel. And I was quite surprised on that. I'm like, do I not have this thing calibrated right? Cause it was a little manual calibration step you had to do. So yeah, if you've got a fiber laser and you've encountered this before, let me know if I'm doing something wrong, but I'm still playing with it. I played with it for like half an hour last night. So I'm still, that'll be my, my video the week after neck, not this week, but next week I'll ah show you guys the new X tool F one ultra.
01:19:43
Speaker
which even though it has the same F1 acronym, it is a totally different laser. And you guys will see in the video that it's a very, so I was very surprised when I got it. It's bigger and, and the fiber, right? The other one's infrared, right? Well, yeah, the other one's an infrared. This is actually a fiber laser, but just When you look at the picture, it's one of those like Amazon things. Like when you get something and you just look at the picture, you think it's one size, but when you get it, it's like a totally different size right and like proportionally, like if you look at the picture, the F one ultra looks identical to the F one, the X tool F one. Okay. It is twice over twice the size in every dimension.
01:20:36
Speaker
Like the, they sent me the conveyor table. So I have the conveyor, the moving conveyor for the F1. Oh, that's right. I saw that. It's 18. It's like a real conveyor. Yeah. The one for the F1 Ultra is four feet long. Oh, geez. So everything on this laser, like I was just so surprised when I got it. I'm like, I got this one huge box. I thought it had everything in it. It only had the laser in it.
01:21:03
Speaker
This is just package on package on package. Yeah. And like we're talking three foot packages, four foot foot packages. Like it was very surprised. So, uh, I see why it is. It's a little pricier of a laser, but, um, it's, it's cool. So I'll give you guys ah an overview of that next week in next week's triple T. Nice. Yeah. So excited to have a fiber laser now. So am I.
01:21:36
Speaker
I love you buddy. You're so cool. yeah Hey, before you get busy with family or while you have some downtime, make sure that you look at flights for. Yeah, I already did. I looked at some last night. There's some decent priced. I think we'll be able to get to maker camp for hopefully under 600 bucks. Yeah, that'd be half of what we have ever spent. Uh, first one was me. First one was me. Second one was you, mister. I don't want to go. I don't want to go. Oh, Hey, let's go. Oh yeah. That's right. We did. We did. We're not good. First one was I was like, yeah, let's wait and see those motherfuckers tripled. That was my fault. yeah That was, uh, you know, we'll book it this week. Yeah. We need to do that. Cause that shit's around the corner. Yeah.
01:22:28
Speaker
Yeah. Well, yeah, we're three months away. So we got to do it. Two months. Yeah, two and a half. Two months and 10 days. Yeah, I guess. All right. onces steve Man, we're already an hour and 25 minutes in. Oh, my God. End it. What are you doing? Those people are going to leave. They probably left 10 minutes ago. It's just you and I talking now. That's right, buddy. It's like always. All right, we're done. We're out of here. All right.
01:23:06
Speaker
I feel like Olive Garden. I cannot believe you picked Olive Garden. Toby is not going to like this. And that's a wrap.
