00:00:30

00:00:33
echo_blades
I only say that guys, cause this is going to be the last one, uh, that I'm going to be on ever. No, for a couple, for a couple of weeks. So, um, and We got some surprises coming up, but, uh, I always say as always, but it's not as always cause sometimes we switch it up.
00:00:50
Denis Tyrell
That's right.
00:00:51
echo_blades
That's right.
00:00:51
Denis Tyrell
I'm so excited to not have you here.
00:00:57
echo_blades
no Atta boy. Look at Dennis with the stinger. look That's what I'm talking about. Oh, I could take the night off now. Oh, that's pretty good. Yes.
00:01:13
Denis Tyrell
ah
00:01:13
echo_blades
Cool.
00:01:14
echo_blades
Yeah. Well, uh, again, welcome to the triple D podcast where we just got tools, tips, and talk and info for the knife maker in this episode, we're going to talk about nothing like always.
00:01:23
Denis Tyrell
yes
00:01:27
Denis Tyrell
Talk about Jared going on vacation and leaving the rest of us in the cold.
00:01:33
echo_blades
Yeah. I just looked at the weather. Um, cause my wife's like, I don't even know, like what I said, this is going to be simple, but I'll, I'll verify what the weather channel, but It's going to be 80s, low of 75 or something like that.
00:01:47
echo_blades
It's going to be like 80 degrees, no matter where we're at all day, all 10 or whatever days that we're gone.

Balancing Work and Leisure

00:01:54
echo_blades
So that's going to be for you.
00:01:56
Denis Tyrell
Nice, no rain.
00:01:57
echo_blades
No. Well, it's tropics. They'll probably come in now, but it's not showing any right now. So.
00:02:03
Denis Tyrell
That's good.
00:02:04
echo_blades
Yeah, but yeah.
00:02:06
Denis Tyrell
Better not be, because I'll be right on your heels after that.
00:02:09
echo_blades
I'm saving it for you, buddy.
00:02:13
Denis Tyrell
oh
00:02:13
echo_blades
But yeah, I'm getting ready to go on a pretty nice, decent vacation out to all kinds of Caribbean islands.
00:02:23
Denis Tyrell
The eastern car Caribbean islands.
00:02:25
echo_blades
Yeah, for a 10 day cruise. I'm pretty damn stoked. My wife and I are really looking forward to kind of going. You know what? Ironically, right, I mean, besides all the the regular day job stuff, which I'm very eager to decompress and get get out of,
00:02:42
echo_blades
Um, I kind of have this, like, but like I'm gonna, I'm like, I'm gonna kill all this great momentum that I'm having right now.
00:02:53
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, we've been, you've been over here twice this week, like almost ah like a full day each time.
00:02:56
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:02:59
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:03:00
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:03:01
echo_blades
They're what it was. Yeah. We've been doing a lot and I we're making billets and doing all kinds of shit. We'll get into all that. But, um, and then I, I've been, bussing stuff out here too.
00:03:12
echo_blades
So, uh, it's been, I've been in the shop every day this year.
00:03:18
echo_blades
Oh, good for you.
00:03:18
Denis Tyrell
Not me, I took the day off today.
00:03:21
echo_blades
Good for you. You didn't cruise up to the shop or up to the office to do some good.
00:03:26
Denis Tyrell
Nope. I sat my ass on the couch all day and watched Disney plus movies.
00:03:33
echo_blades
Oh, that's right. Kim came home, right?
00:03:35
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Well, she didn't come home till like five, four o'clock.
00:03:38
echo_blades
Oh, you really just fucking called in.
00:03:40
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. I did nothing.
00:03:41
echo_blades
Good for you. Good for you.
00:03:42
Denis Tyrell
Nothing.
00:03:43
echo_blades
Nice.
00:03:44
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. I had to clean the house before she came home, but you know,
00:03:46
echo_blades
Yeah, we did. Oh yeah. That's the, like the, the dude cleaning, put the dishes away, picked up your dirty underwear.
00:03:53
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Put the dishes in the dishwasher. That's right.
00:04:02
echo_blades
That's good. That's good. Cool.
00:04:05
Denis Tyrell
Are you all packed? Are you the kind of person that packs like days, days ahead?
00:04:08
echo_blades
Fuck no. I have, I have a freaking neurodivergent disease that doesn't allow me to pre-plan anything. And if I do, um, when I go to pack, I won't remember what I need. Like I'll just go blank. And so I operate very, very well under the supreme support of my beautiful wife who will, uh,
00:04:34
echo_blades
help me. So yeah, we did a little bit of packing today though. Um, like I said, cause I, I don't plan very well. So she's, uh, cleaning the house, getting things in order of our son's going to be with our, with our daughter. So just trying to make sure they got everything. Um, so before she heads into the week, cause she's probably got a lot of stuff to Score away before we go.
00:04:58
echo_blades
um you know And I have an ah added bonus to have a work trip. So I'll be leaving tomorrow to Washington for three days and then um come back for one day and then boop we're off.
00:05:12
Denis Tyrell
Oh, I was thinking you were leaving for your cruise tomorrow to go to Barbados or whatever whatever you're going.
00:05:16
echo_blades
No. No.
00:05:20
Denis Tyrell
Um, Oh, I thought that was on the tail end.
00:05:20
echo_blades
I got a work i had a work trip come up right in the middle, so I got through.
00:05:24
Denis Tyrell
I forgot.
00:05:25
echo_blades
No, no. So I gotta to do ah gotta do a quick trip up north.
00:05:29
Denis Tyrell
Okay.
00:05:33
echo_blades
I checked in with Noah and realized that I'm a smooth the five hours away from him wherever I'm at. So I don't think I'll be checking in, but.
00:05:41
Denis Tyrell
You're like the people that say, oh, you live in California. I'm coming to l LA. I'm going to swing by.
00:05:46
echo_blades
Yeah, exactly. I was like, can you can you just confirm that where I'm going is completely nowhere near you? And he was like, yeah, but, um, so, but yeah, that's, uh, uh, yeah, it just got a little more hectic than I'd like. And like I said, I got a, I got a good clip going right now in the shop and film like a ah productive maker, which I haven't felt like in a long time. I've had, uh, I think it was my resolution, my,
00:06:17
echo_blades
review of the the year, you know, I think I was making, uh, I don't want to say they are excuses, but, you know, I had a lot of stuff going on in my enthusiasm and and fire to, you know, get up and and hustle and get out there and enjoy myself was at a minimum, especially towards the last couple of months.
00:06:37
echo_blades
So, um, but yeah, it's been great. It's been great, dude. I've been, I've just been getting after it and like fill on that.
00:06:42
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:06:47
echo_blades
Uh, it all started with the forging though. I think that's really what kind of really sparked everything. Um, so.
00:06:54
Denis Tyrell
That's good.
00:06:55
Denis Tyrell
getch Get you light a fire on your ass.
00:06:55
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:06:57
echo_blades
Yeah. It's, it's good.

Knife Making Challenges and Innovations

00:06:59
echo_blades
Yeah. Like I said, I felt, I felt like I felt like a knife maker. All the frustrations today and in my shop. So you know what I don't like doing?
00:07:08
Denis Tyrell
Wow.
00:07:09
echo_blades
And I think it's, it's probably more because I haven't done it a lot, but I think whoever invented or or I should say our people, um, that make handle material, that make scales. God bless you. You're you're all sweet individuals. Because splitting a block sucks.
00:07:32
Denis Tyrell
What do you mean?
00:07:33
Denis Tyrell
Well, you have a sod. What are you using for your saw?
00:07:33
echo_blades
Just splitting it.
00:07:36
echo_blades
I have a bandsaw, a wood bandsaw.
00:07:37
Denis Tyrell
Oh, so what's the problem?
00:07:39
echo_blades
It just sucked.
00:07:42
Denis Tyrell
I do it on a table saw, which sucks even more.
00:07:46
echo_blades
I don't know. I mean, you get a clean cut. I don't know. I don't have a fence.
00:07:51
Denis Tyrell
You don't have a fence.
00:07:52
echo_blades
I don't have a fence. So I do. But it's not like my bands. I have a swag table for metal. But then I when I first got going, I bought a bunch of shit from this one guy who was getting out of the thing and there was a wood bandsaw.
00:08:08
echo_blades
And this is back when I didn't even know the difference. I remember there was a. trying to cut a piece of steel on that thing the with a, with a wood blade. ah It's not working.
00:08:21
Denis Tyrell
Why are all the teeth gone from my blade?
00:08:21
echo_blades
but Oh my God. And then I had like, I had like, I don't know, six inches of, uh, you know, I can't, I don't even know what it's called, but the,
00:08:30
Denis Tyrell
The throat.
00:08:31
echo_blades
the throat. Yeah. That was up super high. And I had ah somebody over and I was like, yeah, I don't know what's going on. This thing just fucking sucks. And he's like, he turns a knob and the thing goes down. He's like, well, this might help you. It's like, wow, that's amazing. But ah so I, you know, I use it every now and again, but um yeah, so it was not a very straight cut and then trying to square up the block. And like I said, that's what I'm ah doing. That today was, was good because Um, you know, you don't have the reps in you, you forget the, the simple things that make the shit easy.
00:09:07
echo_blades
Right. So I'm glad I cut the, the, the split the block bigger than I needed.
00:09:08
Denis Tyrell
yeah
00:09:11
echo_blades
Cause had I tried to like, cause my original thing was like, I was going to cut this into half and then it was going to go quarter inch scales and bubble bla blah, blah, blah. I'm like, yeah, I would have been like down to a 16th scale or something by the time I was done trying to square it all up.
00:09:24
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, it's I've tried that before where, oh, I'm going to optimize this and I'll get four scales out of this block and you'll get zero scales if you do that.
00:09:30
echo_blades
Exactly.
00:09:33
echo_blades
Yeah, this is a a custom order with a, with a really beautiful Koa piece, expensive too. So I made sure to leave myself enough to, or enough room to pull the Jared and, and I did.
00:09:51
echo_blades
So yeah, but that wasn't super enjoyable. So, uh, I like scales, but she,
00:09:58
Denis Tyrell
I prefer blocks.
00:10:01
Denis Tyrell
Don't be lazy.
00:10:03
echo_blades
Well, I mean, you, but you do hidden tanks too, right?
00:10:05
Denis Tyrell
Right. and That's why I don't usually slice them into scales.
00:10:09
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:10:11
Denis Tyrell
But I do on occasion.
00:10:12
echo_blades
Well, that's good. Yeah. I mean, it's not, it's not the worst thing in the world. I was just saying, I just was like, ah this would have been cool if this was just a scale already, you know, cause just flatten them liners, all that good stuff.
00:10:22
echo_blades
So.
00:10:23
Denis Tyrell
do Do you have one of those sleds? ah for your wood to put on the surface grinder. Do you have one of those?
00:10:34
echo_blades
i'm I'm quiet because I want to choke you right now.
00:10:38
Denis Tyrell
I don't remember.
00:10:40
echo_blades
ah This is just a one of those, one of the many things in the long list of things that I i brought up to you and Jeff and I, I i saw one that TR Maker made and then Jeff and I made one and I showed you and then I got another text from you one day.
00:10:48
Denis Tyrell
What did I call?
00:10:55
echo_blades
I'm saying, Oh, I did a thing. So you're welcome. Yes, I have one.
00:10:59
Denis Tyrell
You know, I don't remember half the shit I do.
00:11:00
echo_blades
I know, you know, I know, but yes, I have one.
00:11:01
Denis Tyrell
but ah Okay. I can remember. I've never seen you use it or talk about it.
00:11:04
echo_blades
and Yeah. and know you I didn't even think about it today.
00:11:10
Denis Tyrell
Oh yeah.
00:11:10
Denis Tyrell
Those are, those are the best thing.
00:11:10
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:11:10
echo_blades
so Yeah. That would have been fucking stellar.
00:11:15
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:11:15
Denis Tyrell
my issue right Making your life easier after the fact that you've already done it and it's been difficult.
00:11:15
echo_blades
All right.
00:11:16
echo_blades
i I forgive you a little bit. Yeah. I actually do forgive you a little bit.
00:11:26
echo_blades
Yeah. But even yeah, yeah, that's a great, great.
00:11:28
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:11:31
echo_blades
Yeah. Until we noted. Thank you.
00:11:33
Denis Tyrell
That's one one thing about the disc grinder. Yeah, it makes things flat, but it doesn't make things even parallel.
00:11:39
echo_blades
Yes. Yes.
00:11:41
Denis Tyrell
because
00:11:41
echo_blades
That's what I was struggling with.
00:11:42
Denis Tyrell
yeah
00:11:43
Denis Tyrell
I've tried that on the disc grinder before and tried to make them, and then I always go back to the surface grinder with that slat.
00:11:43
echo_blades
i have Yeah.
00:11:52
echo_blades
No, that would have been, Yeah, touche. That would have been the way better, more efficient thing. um But we ah do this. I have a tendency to when I'm even just grinding on the platen to push ah unintentionally push, you know, on the bottom more or the top more.
00:12:09
echo_blades
And okay, yeah, good.
00:12:09
Denis Tyrell
It's inevitable.
00:12:11
echo_blades
Because I was like, this is really what the fuck, you know, so I got there, but
00:12:16
Denis Tyrell
the Yeah, the only time I do that is when I'm doing a hidden Tang knife and i have to square up the handle and it's marked. Because then you can. You can see your marks and you can see where you're pushing.
00:12:28
echo_blades
I thought about that though. I didn't, after I was done, I was like, I should have took this over to the, to the, to the granite plate and, you know, and mark some lines to get this thing, you know, like all kinds of good stuff. That's what I'm saying. Like I feel good about getting going and, um, just getting after it. Cause you do, there's like so many easy or or tips and shit that we do. You just forget about it when you're just trying to get after it. Yeah.
00:12:56
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, unless you do it all the time, you kind of forget about the best process or something.
00:13:01
echo_blades
For sure. For sure. It's been a long time since I've even thought about because and all I'd use is scale. So, um, but yeah, that's that. Yes. I do have one of those slides though.
00:13:18
Denis Tyrell
Use it next time.
00:13:19
echo_blades
I will. Thank you. I'm so glad you fucking that's good. Um, what else? What else, what else, what else, what else, what else? I used a rotary pla so ah finally um ah use the used the Tobin jig for the first time and then kind of did like a hybrid. I started with it, um which was probably not the best idea for the build, for the ah for the knife that I was doing.
00:13:53
echo_blades
I'm trying to keep the ah the brute to forge to scale as much as I could um with some rookie mistakes and not, you know, with zero experience behind the jig.
00:14:03
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:14:04
echo_blades
I ended up washing out a bunch of it that I did not intend to. um and enhanced sanding today. I really realized how bad I did that. But um so i kind of I started that way.
00:14:15
echo_blades
I see just really cool tool. I think there's a and think I'm going to get a lot of use out of it and it'll be a huge. I don't want time saver, but it'll it'll add to some efficiency and a different way to to grind for me anyways.
00:14:31
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:14:34
echo_blades
um And then the the rotary platen though, dude, that was the first time I've used the rotary platen and I just want to sing the praises. That thing is badass.
00:14:47
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, it's a great tool. Um, I, I had not used it until, um, I dunno, I guess it was, and I got that from broad back a long time ago and I just hadn't used it.
00:15:00
Denis Tyrell
And probably six months ago, I used it for the first time doing chef knives and like, especially doing the edge, man.
00:15:05
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:15:08
echo_blades
Yeah, I think we did.
00:15:09
Denis Tyrell
So easy.
00:15:10
echo_blades
I think we did a live where you were doing your first S grind.
00:15:14
Denis Tyrell
No, it was it was an S-grine.
00:15:14
echo_blades
Yes.
00:15:15
Denis Tyrell
My first S-grine was years ago.
00:15:18
echo_blades
Okay. Well, you use the, the radius platen and, uh, and the rotary on that, that live that we did.
00:15:25
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, yeah.
00:15:25
echo_blades
So I remember that.
00:15:26
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, it's great because it's got the slack.
00:15:27
echo_blades
Um, but yeah, dude, that, that thing does everything that I've, yeah, I don't know what I'm.
00:15:35
Denis Tyrell
You can use it with the rest. um And it's it's especially great for doing that convex near the edge after you've done before or after you've done the NS Grind. It's really good for that.
00:15:50
echo_blades
Yeah, I could see all those those those wins from there, but it's just a great tool. So much easier to get. For me, I can get to bevels in. I can get pretty pretty thin um on my own, but there comes to that point where you want to kind of like fine tune your edge. Um, and that thing was like a game changer for me. Uh, like slowed everything down. Uh, uh, the pressure that you put wasn't like a, uh, you know, a deal breaking mistake. You know, if you, if you're, if you hit it on the, on the the hard platen, um, just a lot of forgiveness, uh, and just really
00:16:35
echo_blades
ah allowed me to work through the process of ah thinning that edge. um Because, you know, I had some thin spot in one place and a little thicker over here. But while I was convexing that I got to even all that out really, really simple.
00:16:51
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, it's it's great and the rubber backing gives you just enough give to smooth out lines and, you know, really.
00:16:59
echo_blades
yeah Yeah. Yeah. Like a leather. I think the only thing I've had is like a different versions of soft platens like leather. And I think Jeff and I came up with some other one.
00:17:06
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:17:09
echo_blades
But yeah, that's, that's good. I will, before I leave, actually, I'm going to pull the trigger on one of those.
00:17:14
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I mean, yeah, like after
00:17:16
echo_blades
I should have did it beginning of the fucking for the year ended. but
00:17:21
Denis Tyrell
using the rotary platen. I don't know that I would ever use a leather platen, like it kind of solves the same thing in my opinion.
00:17:24
echo_blades
A hundred percent.
00:17:29
Denis Tyrell
And it doesn't have the heat that ah the leather does.
00:17:31
echo_blades
hundred percent
00:17:31
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:17:32
echo_blades
hundred percent 100%. 100%. 100%. Yep.
00:17:35
Denis Tyrell
And it's got the slack, um the variable slack areas, which is cool.
00:17:40
echo_blades
Yeah, really cool. Really cool tool. I'm a believer. I'm a fan. I love using it. So yeah.
00:17:47
Denis Tyrell
Good.
00:17:51
Denis Tyrell
What did I do the last couple of days? I'm still working on the puzzle knife. Um, did the silver inlay the other day, um, finished the handle. I actually did that while you were over. So the handle's all done, which I love. I still think it's probably one of the nicest pieces of wood I've ever used.
00:18:11
echo_blades
that That thing is gorgeous.
00:18:13
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, it's a, it's cool. And it really just locks your hand in. So I'm, I'm excited about it. So. I just have to do final sanding on the guard. I did the little scallops, which you probably didn't see.
00:18:25
Denis Tyrell
No, I did them after.
00:18:26
Denis Tyrell
um ah Yeah, on the top of the guard.
00:18:27
echo_blades
Scallops on the guard.
00:18:29
echo_blades
Oh, okay. yeah
00:18:32
Denis Tyrell
And that little silver plate on the top.
00:18:37
Denis Tyrell
youll You guys will see it. um the But yeah, I just.
00:18:42
echo_blades
the The human plate, the dentist's human plate, that's what I call
00:18:45
Denis Tyrell
ah That's right.
00:18:49
Denis Tyrell
um But yeah, I just got to do final sanding on the blade, final sanding on the hand, on the guard slash bolster, whatever the fuck we're going to call that. And, uh, do the hot salt thing on it, um which I may do tomorrow. Um, and that process is, I don't know, it's a pain in the ass. It's, it's very inconsistent. Uh, it's hard to get a good finish on that one, not like the black, the blackening salts.
00:19:17
Denis Tyrell
the The high temp salts are really finicky. You get like little cloudy finishes. Sometimes it's, I remember having to do it like three times before I got a good finish the last time I did it.
00:19:32
echo_blades
And I can't remember the name of the knife that we were talking about. I called it the Thundercat.
00:19:39
Denis Tyrell
The, name of that I did the bluing on.
00:19:41
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:19:42
Denis Tyrell
Oh, you mean the. The one that I called the Ice Blue Bowie, that the Bowie, that one?
00:19:48
echo_blades
Yes.
00:19:48
Denis Tyrell
Yes, yes.
00:19:49
echo_blades
The Thundercat.
00:19:51
Denis Tyrell
I don't know why you call it that. Every time you say Thundercat, I think of the dagger, because I've had a few people say that it looked like like a dagger from, you know, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
00:20:03
echo_blades
Well, yeah. Well, the sub health thing that the on the guard that you had, it looks like the the eye of the sun, the Thundercat thing. Every time I look at it, I just want to go Thundercats. Oh yeah.
00:20:15
Denis Tyrell
I have people say that about the dagger. That's why it throws me, but yeah.
00:20:20
echo_blades
I know they don't get it. That that was still a good reference there, but, uh, yeah.
00:20:26
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, so excited about that one. Have that one done and then I got the the other two to to start on. And the two Damascus patterns that are coming along. One both mosaics ones kind of explosion based. But it's got.
00:20:45
Denis Tyrell
a bunch of different, it's got some nickel in it. It's got a bunch of different layers in it. it's yeah I'm anxious to cut open the one I forged yesterday.
00:20:57
echo_blades
you had ah You had a funny comment after, I think it was yesterday, because I want to get back to the pattern because I think the pattern is going to be great. But I thought it was really cool that I'm super happy that I'm not doing that with you.
00:21:13
echo_blades
Like I didn't try to like bite off more than I could chew and try to do these crazy patterns that that you were doing. It was so enjoyable just to I think I did a go my and a sand my in between while you were doing your thing. So I was kind of watching what you're doing. But you had a funny comment yesterday after you were done because Dennis has been like,
00:21:33
echo_blades
Forge World after Forge World squaring, restack, like doing all this shit and I'm doing other crap in the shop, but it was, you're like, I have three more restacks to do. me At that moment, I was like, I am so happy that I'm not doing that right now.
00:21:52
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, more than I counted, because I had a bunch of prep to do to get the stack. The stack is seed, and now I need to get probably at least about 50 layers of that seed.
00:22:07
Denis Tyrell
But it's one bar right now, so I got to cut it up into four.
00:22:10
echo_blades
Right.
00:22:11
Denis Tyrell
So I'll have four layers, then four it again, that's 16, and then four it again.
00:22:14
echo_blades
oh
00:22:16
Denis Tyrell
And then I can do the S, I can do the thing, and then I have to read.
00:22:19
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:22:21
Denis Tyrell
so there's Six more forge welds for that one.
00:22:24
echo_blades
Oh, God.
00:22:27
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, it's a pain in the ass.
00:22:28
echo_blades
It can't be right.
00:22:28
Denis Tyrell
That one's like.
00:22:30
echo_blades
I mean, when you're I get to, I could tell when we were doing the the mosaic. you know, however long ago that is, but it's like, you're, well, you know, Forge, well, that's for Forge, whether you're like, God, I just want to get, I just want to see this thing, you know, just want to be done.
00:22:44
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Yeah, but I'm glad I was doing the other one at the same time, which is a mosaic, which is It's, it's funny cause it's like explosion base. So you have to like four way it, those actually produce a pattern quicker.
00:22:57
Denis Tyrell
And then you got to like four weight again and make the pattern tighter.
00:23:00
echo_blades
Sure.
00:23:00
Denis Tyrell
But that one only took one, two, I'm only on the third forge. Well, and it's already like, I can see what the final pattern will look like. I just need to make it smaller and tighter.
00:23:12
echo_blades
You're right.
00:23:14
Denis Tyrell
And I have to tile it and all that bullshit, but at least I can see the pattern. This one, I'm not going to see the pattern until the end.
00:23:20
echo_blades
So you're, you're, you're doing two different patterns.
00:23:22
Denis Tyrell
Two totally different patterns.
00:23:23
echo_blades
Gotcha. Yeah.
00:23:23
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Neither one of I've done before.
00:23:28
echo_blades
You were doing them, you were doing one pattern at a time though, right?
00:23:31
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:23:32
echo_blades
Not working on multiple at the same.
00:23:32
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. No, no, I.
00:23:34
echo_blades
That's how we end up with a, with a basket weave feather.
00:23:39
Denis Tyrell
Exactly. Or you mess something up and you try to re-square after re-squaring.
00:23:41
echo_blades
yeah
00:23:44
echo_blades
Yeah, exactly.
00:23:45
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Yeah. Not doing that.
00:23:47
echo_blades
That's funny. Yeah, so I do, I'm telling you that it was and was really, it was just chill, easy going time. Like, you know, he, like I said, he was, Dennis was doing his own thing.
00:23:57
echo_blades
I was doing mine. um But you know what? With all the complexity that Dennis is putting into these patterns that I'm sure is going to come out great.

Promotions and Tool Endorsements

00:24:08
echo_blades
But if you're not into that, then I suggest that you go check out our voice at Baker forged and tool. um They got all of this stuff already done ready for you um to just ah make a knife at them. Super simple. They got a new firestorm Damascus core ripple pattern just dropped, I believe yesterday.
00:24:33
echo_blades
um So the wait is over now. You can get that um on the website. And if you want to get ahead of that, you can also use the Baker Forging Tool app and you can get one day early access to all of the drops.
00:24:46
echo_blades
This one is too late, but for the future drops, you can do that. and This is actually their first drop of 2025. I think they took a nice little ah break over the holidays.
00:24:54
Denis Tyrell
They did. did
00:24:56
echo_blades
So they're back in the swing and gearing up for another stellar year.
00:24:57
Denis Tyrell
They did.
00:24:59
echo_blades
um But yeah, I Go do that now. Actually, just put pause and then go put an order in. and And when you're done, when you got that stuff in the cart, you can put in the discount code TTT10. That's TTT10 for 10% off your next purchase. And before you hit go, though, you better drop yourself some Gatorpis in that cart as well, because that is the elite etchant, pre-made etchant to ah finish up all that beautiful Damascus when you're all done.
00:25:30
echo_blades
Picker, forged and tool also available at maritime for all the Hothians out there.
00:25:38
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. ah So what yesterday you were also working on a hidden Tang forged knife. Tell me how that experience went.
00:25:49
Denis Tyrell
Is it getting easier? Is it making more sense?
00:25:51
echo_blades
Yes, it is um the.
00:25:52
Denis Tyrell
Good.
00:25:58
echo_blades
Nothing's flat. Like, I don't know. I don't know how to say that. I mean, I may sound like a total noob right now, but that's that's what I am is where I'm at with this particular type thing. You know, I've thought about forging and and trying to do that. And I've done it quite a few times, but, um, forging it and heat treating it and getting it ready. Um,
00:26:18
echo_blades
is one thing, but as I was beginning to grind, like the process that is ingrained that I have learned and developed ah completely doesn't apply because there's, there's nothing flat. So finding the edge.
00:26:31
echo_blades
on there was our the center line on the edge was you know humbling at first. um So, but the grind was was good. Like I said, with the um but the the Tobin jig and the rotary platen, I really enjoyed it. I haven't enjoyed grinding in a long time and that was super enjoyable. um And especially when I got to go When I went back to just doing it my way. The other thing I wanted to say was that a while back, I think a couple of weeks back, three weeks ago, um, Kyle, um, from college daily had a little mini sale for, um, on his website for some knife making tools and some things. And, uh, excuse me. He, I picked up, uh, one of his, um, push sticks with the, uh, with the bearing on it.
00:27:28
echo_blades
you know, I'm talking about.
00:27:29
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, yeah. Do you like it?
00:27:30
echo_blades
I loved it. I really loved it.
00:27:33
Denis Tyrell
Nice
00:27:34
echo_blades
It was sometimes with the ah I have a tendency to address the platen, even when I'm just using like the rest in my thumb.
00:27:46
echo_blades
um But I have a tendency to sit down and and I, unfortunately, I'll think about what I'm trying to do while the knife's on there. And sometimes I do have some pressure on there.
00:27:57
echo_blades
So I I leave it there too long. And then when I was using using a push stick, the ah ah sometimes it gets a little stuck right there. But with that bearing, I was able just to pull the knife right through and the process went really good for me.
00:28:13
echo_blades
So I super dig it.
00:28:14
Denis Tyrell
That's good And I bet you that um if you have a forged finish the the bearing is probably gonna work a lot better than an actual push stick Like a like a nylon or whatever push stick or Teflon or whatever.
00:28:24
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:28:27
echo_blades
Yeah, I have i have ah one more that I want to try to, but I don't want to talk about it until I give it a whirl.
00:28:28
Denis Tyrell
Yeah Nice
00:28:36
echo_blades
So I really enjoyed it. Yeah, it was really cool. So if you're looking for a new way, it's kind of similar to the jig, to the bearing that comes with the Tobin jig, but it's just in your hand.
00:28:47
Denis Tyrell
Right.
00:28:48
echo_blades
And um I have the, I think it's called the BAMP apron from Reko, he put out a couple of years ago. It's got all these pockets up in the front. So I was able to like stick it because I always put the push stick down somewhere and then I'm spinning around looking for it and can't find it. So it fit in those pockets really easy. But if you're looking for something, yeah, go check that out. um I recommend it. I really enjoyed it.
00:29:16
Denis Tyrell
So I meant, when I asked you about the the hidden Tang, I meant the one you forged. How, were how is that experience? Is it getting easier? Remember you forged the Tang on the AVCRV2 block.
00:29:26
echo_blades
Oh yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, I was gonna, yeah, my bad. Um, I'm just being silent to be a dick.
00:29:33
Denis Tyrell
You're drawing a blank.
00:29:34
echo_blades
No, I'm just being a dick.
00:29:40
echo_blades
I was drawing a blank before, but, uh, yeah, that was fun. I'm really digging, forging. And I think, uh, I didn't want the best compliments that I've had in a long time was here I started a fortune in the tip and you were like, Oh, Hey, look at you. You're actually moving. You're moving some steel now.
00:30:01
Denis Tyrell
You're moving it faster than you used to. and i could I could hear the hammer, the cadence of the hammer being a lot faster than it used to be.
00:30:07
echo_blades
Yeah. It wasn't like dink, dink.
00:30:11
Denis Tyrell
like could I can hear Jared think between heads.
00:30:14
echo_blades
Yeah. For real. That does happen.
00:30:17
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:30:18
echo_blades
Yeah. Um, I'm digging it. I'm digging it. I still think, um, I either gotta do it for myself, uh, some kind of ah a progression chart, um, to help me get those steps together. But, um,
00:30:36
echo_blades
And I also got, I'm so lucky to have people that have really cool tools and stuff. So I'm caught between this, like I want to learn and do it with just a hammer or the traditional or whatever, you know, but when there's a press right there, I just, I'm going to stick it in there and speed things up, you know?
00:30:54
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:30:56
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:30:56
echo_blades
So, but I think there's, there's value in in learning both methods for sure.
00:31:01
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. And it doesn't have to be, I mean, you use the guillotine tool. that That's a handy tool without even using a press.
00:31:06
echo_blades
Oh, yeah, yeah.
00:31:08
Denis Tyrell
So that one helps a lot.
00:31:09
echo_blades
Yep. Mm hmm. Yeah, I'm digging it, dude.
00:31:13
Denis Tyrell
Cool.
00:31:13
echo_blades
It's ah it's really cool.
00:31:17
Denis Tyrell
I was designing a new folder today.
00:31:20
echo_blades
I thought you took the day off.
00:31:21
Denis Tyrell
um
00:31:24
Denis Tyrell
I didn't go in the shop.
00:31:25
echo_blades
You roasted you went up to the office and work.
00:31:27
Denis Tyrell
No, no. Kim was watching football and I didn't want to watch football. So I sat on the couch beside her with my laptop and designed a knife.
00:31:35
echo_blades
Okay. All right. That's fair.
00:31:38
Denis Tyrell
um
00:31:39
echo_blades
That's quality time.
00:31:40
Denis Tyrell
I wanted to, i want i really i it I thought it was Parker, but it was you that showed me the Spyderco with the It's a liner lock, but the lock releases on the spine instead of on the belly.
00:31:55
Denis Tyrell
Yes, that one. um And i will I love the concept. I guess they call it a compression lock.
00:32:02
echo_blades
Yep.
00:32:03
Denis Tyrell
um And the patent expired on that thing in 21. So um I went and designed one based on my silver tip model. i'm So yeah, I think that'll be the next folder that I do.
00:32:16
Denis Tyrell
It'll be a little trickier because the The lock bar has a little, a little whoop on the end. It's not just a ah square. Um, so I'll probably have to mill the slot for the lock bar, which is a bit of a pain in the ass.
00:32:34
Denis Tyrell
But, uh, anyway, we'll see. I'll probably do a video on it when I do it. but Yeah.
00:32:38
echo_blades
Yeah, that's exciting. This is my favorite knife.
00:32:41
Denis Tyrell
Is it? Why, but why, why, why so?
00:32:42
echo_blades
Yeah, it's my favorite pocket knife. so parents The Para, the Para 3. It fits in my hand good. It's it's just a really like the perfect EDC for me.
00:32:52
echo_blades
And I love the compression lock.
00:32:55
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:32:55
echo_blades
So it's just the the whole thing. I'm a big Spyderco guy. That's kind of what I started. That's how this whole thing started was me getting a couple of pocket knives and then landing in this world of Spyderco. So I have a fucking shit ton of them that and I only carry this one right now.

Knife Preferences and Custom Orders

00:33:15
echo_blades
Currently between my my everyday carries are are this your um the one that you made.
00:33:23
echo_blades
And I have a Monterey Bay knife from a local guy that Michael Vagnino helps out or works with or do something like that.
00:33:27
Denis Tyrell
Oh, yeah.
00:33:35
echo_blades
But those three are the the ones that are going through right now. So they are my favorite knife, though.
00:33:40
Denis Tyrell
Hmm.
00:33:41
echo_blades
So I don't like to pair ah the paramilitary two is too big of a knife for me. I don't like that carry.
00:33:46
Denis Tyrell
Oh, that's a three. The one you just showed me.
00:33:49
echo_blades
Yeah, that's a pair of three.
00:33:50
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Yeah.
00:33:51
Denis Tyrell
I'm I'm. I'm not a Spyderco guy. I don't really love the blade shapes on them, just because of the way they put the hole and makes that big thing in the blade.
00:33:51
echo_blades
So a little smaller, you know why it's there though, right?
00:34:03
Denis Tyrell
But, well, yeah, because the hole's there. So the they need the blade to be wider to put the hole. No, I'm not talking about the hole. I'm talking about the, they have to make the blade taller at the where the hole is.
00:34:16
Denis Tyrell
That's what I mean is I don't love that, but see.
00:34:19
echo_blades
Yeah. The hole's great. If you got a Spidey flick. Spidey flick in his life.
00:34:23
Denis Tyrell
Whatever.
00:34:25
echo_blades
Anybody likes pocket knives or, or, or, you know, folding knives, dude, it's, it's the fidget factor.
00:34:30
Denis Tyrell
I get it.
00:34:31
echo_blades
Yeah. So the whole is great.
00:34:34
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, but I'm not putting a hole in mine.
00:34:36
echo_blades
Boo. How are you going to open it?
00:34:39
Denis Tyrell
It'll have a thumb stud.
00:34:41
echo_blades
Okay. All right.
00:34:42
Denis Tyrell
I have to because I can't you can't put a you can't put the flipper on the top with that model.
00:34:44
echo_blades
Oh, I know. Yeah, I get it. I'm with you.
00:34:48
echo_blades
I asked you for a thumb stud on this one and the previous one. I don't like them.
00:34:54
Denis Tyrell
I didn't want to do it on that one. That one has a shark fin. It's patented.
00:34:58
echo_blades
Yeah. No, that's cool though. that yeah That one's flip. You have a flipper on there.
00:35:01
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:35:02
echo_blades
That works. That's cool.
00:35:04
Denis Tyrell
But.
00:35:04
echo_blades
ah That's exciting.
00:35:06
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:35:07
echo_blades
Again.
00:35:08
Denis Tyrell
ah It'll be a way. So I got now I have a bunch of Bowie knives to do because the I said last week that I wasn't going to do any customs. And I said, if anybody has a custom that they really want, like that they've already ordered, they better, they're gonna reach out to me.
00:35:24
Denis Tyrell
So someone, yeah.
00:35:26
echo_blades
Did you get any, anybody to take it?
00:35:29
Denis Tyrell
I talked about this one before, the guy wants me to do a kumai buoy and a matching ring, which I've never done a ring before. So that is kind of interesting to me.
00:35:38
echo_blades
No, he, yeah, he won.
00:35:41
Denis Tyrell
And it's a buoy knife and yeah, that part of it.
00:35:43
echo_blades
yeah That's the, that's not one of the two that you're making.
00:35:44
Denis Tyrell
And I actually already have that steel forged. So there's all kinds of reasons why I'm gonna do that one.
00:35:52
echo_blades
You've already, okay. In addition to gotcha.
00:35:53
Denis Tyrell
No, yeah, I just I know I i have a big piece of Kuma I already forged in the drawer that I can just use for that So I'll do that one at some point in the spring But I do have a question for anyone um it Anyone that's done rings before so I'm I need to make a ring um I I don't have
00:36:05
echo_blades
Cool.
00:36:21
Denis Tyrell
A piece of cylindrical stock because this is a kumai so really it is a piece of flat stock that I'm gonna end up Like whatever using a whole saw and like literally making a ring out of but then I need to turn it What do people like are you you guys that are anybody that's a ringmaker knows ringmakers what kind of setup are they first of all the using on a lathe to turn this thing and then What, um, what are you guys coding these rings with? Because this is steel and it's going to be carbon steel, not stainless. They need to be coded with something. What are you guys coding these things with so that they don't rust on somebody's finger? So, uh, if you guys have any info on that, uh, let me know.
00:37:11
echo_blades
You got to reach out to, uh, it's Azura maker.
00:37:14
Denis Tyrell
I was, I was just thinking of that.
00:37:16
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:37:16
Denis Tyrell
Uh, it's kind of, yeah.
00:37:16
echo_blades
We, we, we featured him on ah on a maker spotlight a while back and he's done all kinds of, all kinds of those.
00:37:22
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, maybe I will read.
00:37:24
echo_blades
That's a good resource right there.
00:37:25
Denis Tyrell
And I think they have fixtures for lathes specifically for rings that have like, ah like a spread feature. It will slick. You drill a hole in something, you put something in, spread it, and then you can turn it.
00:37:39
echo_blades
Okay.
00:37:39
Denis Tyrell
That's what I need.
00:37:40
echo_blades
Gotcha. Yeah. I don't know. Hit up Jordan.
00:37:42
Denis Tyrell
All right.
00:37:43
echo_blades
He'll take care of you.
00:37:46
Denis Tyrell
So yeah, got a few months to figure out those.
00:37:47
echo_blades
Well, that's cool. That's interesting.
00:37:53
echo_blades
Nice.
00:37:53
Denis Tyrell
but I noticed you were using your two bastards fat peen hammer yesterday to forge your knife.
00:37:59
echo_blades
um um bum boom um boomm brown ticker brown cat
00:38:08
Denis Tyrell
And if you guys need a hammer for forging, those are the guys to talk to. Go check out ah two bastards, Texas Smithy and supplies. Get yourself straight peen, cross peen,
00:38:22
Denis Tyrell
Any kind of pain that you need, uh, or, or any kind of hammer that you guys deep go, Chuck, go talk to Frank Anita over at two bastards. They will hook you up because ah as, as Jared always says, isn't it grand to have a fat pain in your hand?
00:38:30
echo_blades
with a mean ass pain, a mean pain. They will hook you up with the meanest. be I almost did it. Rhymes with meanest. Oh Lord. That was close.
00:38:42
echo_blades
if
00:38:47
echo_blades
I did. And I, yeah, I gripped and ripped it a lot this past week here. So good stuff.

Vacation Stress and Work Backlog

00:38:56
Denis Tyrell
a So you excited about this vacation or are you still thinking about the work vacation?
00:39:03
echo_blades
Well, the works is not a vacation. but The work trip.
00:39:08
Denis Tyrell
The work trip.
00:39:09
echo_blades
Yeah. No, I'm ah I'm getting there. I'm getting there. I am probably stressing more. It's so lame. Life is so dumb sometimes because applying this trip like three months ago and in the midst of it, it was it was a but it was a bad time, right?
00:39:30
echo_blades
There was a lot of really horrible, just bad stuff going on. So, um, this was the light at the end of the tunnel, right? My wife and I are going to get away, get away, do all that stuff. And then as sure as shit, you know, it's never a good time to take, you know, a good chunk of work off. Cause I don't know about you guys, but when, what I do, the more time you take off, the worse it is when you come back, right? It's just like,
00:39:58
echo_blades
I don't have anybody that does what I do. So it just piles up. Right. And um so I'm trying to this trip right now is getting in the way of me preparing for me to make my return back from the the vacation a little less lame. So that's that's ah what I'm in the middle of. I think that'll happen for another couple of days and then I'll probably give it a take a nice dose of the fuck at all and just
00:40:27
Denis Tyrell
You said you said the opposite what I usually think what I used to think when I was in high tech which was Longer vacations were better because you might as well take a two-week vacation because if shit didn't get handled At least for me it didn't shit would people will figure out stuff And if I wasn't there they're gonna get somebody else you're gonna go to somebody else when I get back from vacation Especially it was a multi-week vacation. I pretty much delete all the email from the first week because either it got handled or they sent another email and, or I'm going to have something else in the second week about it.
00:41:04
Denis Tyrell
So, uh, I was like, fuck that. If I'm going to take a week, I might as well would take two.
00:41:10
echo_blades
yeah That's amazing No,
00:41:12
Denis Tyrell
You don't agree.
00:41:15
echo_blades
I think I've only taken two weeks off once in my entire life Yeah one one trip in 2017 I remember it's like that vividly it was 17 total days with like two weeks of work off but Yeah
00:41:15
Denis Tyrell
you're
00:41:20
Denis Tyrell
Really? Wow.
00:41:26
Denis Tyrell
wow
00:41:33
echo_blades
um
00:41:35
echo_blades
It's not that I don't have a team, a place to get things done. It's just that the construction two weeks isn't, there's things that are projected and scheduled out so far down the road, right?
00:41:47
echo_blades
And like the way that we have to, you know, we're, we're scheduling things to get them done. Shit has to fall in order. And I just, um, care, I guess, you know, I'm going to make sure that that stuff happens.
00:42:02
Denis Tyrell
You're not a micromanager, are you?
00:42:04
echo_blades
Huh?
00:42:04
Denis Tyrell
You're not a micromanager, are you?
00:42:05
echo_blades
I am a manager that does whatever is necessary to where I don't get my, yeah.
00:42:12
Denis Tyrell
Ass-tude.
00:42:14
echo_blades
And my ass chewings don't come from like internally. They are from angry customers and people like that.
00:42:21
Denis Tyrell
Oh, that's worse.
00:42:22
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:42:22
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:42:23
echo_blades
And I don't, I don't, my, are you know, we, we have a good reputation and I want to keep it that way. So, um, but we have a good team.
00:42:29
Denis Tyrell
I never had.
00:42:30
echo_blades
Everything's going to be fine.
00:42:31
Denis Tyrell
I never had to deal with customers, only had to deal with internal people.
00:42:34
echo_blades
They're the, yeah yeah, they're the fucking worst, dude. and Especially now in construction, like the schedules are so accelerated. Like there's nothing, people have zero qualms about asking you to give them something in an unrealistic timeline. It's just like second nature to them now. Like this should take you two weeks. So I need it in a week. Like what the fuck?
00:43:00
Denis Tyrell
It's the Mr. Scott principle.
00:43:02
echo_blades
Who's Mr. Scott?
00:43:05
Denis Tyrell
You're joking, right? Mr.
00:43:06
Denis Tyrell
Scott principle. You never heard that before.
00:43:06
echo_blades
Nope.
00:43:07
echo_blades
Oh jeez. I just no, don't know what you're talking about.
00:43:10
Denis Tyrell
Star Trek, Mr. Scott Kirk would always ask Mr. Scott how how long it was going to take to do something. He would always say three acts and it would come back and then they'd agree on acts. You know, he'd say, it's going to take me six weeks. And he's like, you got two weeks. And then he'd do it. So the Mr. Scott principle is just triple everything. And then if you're going to get it back to where you needed it to be.
00:43:34
echo_blades
Gotcha. I missed that one, but yes, I am aware of that.
00:43:40
echo_blades
Star Trek, really? You just dropped a Star Trek on me.
00:43:44
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
00:43:45
echo_blades
All right. I just did not see that coming.
00:43:46
Denis Tyrell
Hey, come on. I was in high tech. I know all the nerd ah you know nerd topics.
00:43:55
echo_blades
You know, but if you don't want to sit around and wait a bunch of time, you know, for somebody to go on vacation, because even if this person does go on vacation, they're still going to get you your shit. Maritime knives to play. That's where you need to go. Cause he will make it happen. He could take whatever, however much time off he wants. Cause he's got a great crew that gets everything there.
00:44:15
echo_blades
But for, uh, yeah, for all your knife making needs, you should go check out, uh, Lawrence at maritime. Nice apply. They got everything you need. Everything. In fact, I was just taking an inventory.
00:44:25
echo_blades
Um, thinking of all the things I could steal and Dennis wasn't looking when I was at his shop was, uh, yeah, I don't think you have a single piece of bar stock in, in your shop.
00:44:38
Denis Tyrell
What do you mean? but Yeah, I do.
00:44:40
echo_blades
Is it like hidden from Jared?
00:44:41
Denis Tyrell
It's but it's yeah behind the compressor.
00:44:45
echo_blades
ah yeah
00:44:45
Denis Tyrell
ah
00:44:46
echo_blades
Good for you. But I was just noticing that you had all this, this is like right on that tool, tool, tool chest. You have all that cut up Damascus that Lawrence gives you there, which is our favorite service that he does.
00:44:59
echo_blades
Cause that's, that's really cool.
00:44:59
Denis Tyrell
yes
00:45:01
echo_blades
Made me think you don't even believe in bar stock anymore.
00:45:03
Denis Tyrell
No, I and you know what he was out of this was I was probably over a month ago. I I wanted some 15 and 20 and They didn't have any by the foot like what he regularly he'll cut up for you.
00:45:17
echo_blades
Mm-hmm.
00:45:17
Denis Tyrell
So I'm like, oh fuck I'll just I'll get the um The bandsaw blade 15 and 20 and he has that by the foot And then it's it's the nice part about that stuff is it's super shiny has no mill scale on it
00:45:24
echo_blades
Right.
00:45:31
echo_blades
Okay.
00:45:32
Denis Tyrell
But the downside is it's hard.
00:45:33
echo_blades
Thank you. Oh, yeah.
00:45:34
Denis Tyrell
So he can't cut it.
00:45:35
echo_blades
I got it. Yeah.
00:45:36
Denis Tyrell
So I'm like, motherfucker. And I had to, I got it all like, you know, 41 foot pieces that I then had to cut up with my least favorite tool in the shop, the angle grinder.
00:45:50
Denis Tyrell
So I was not happy about that.
00:45:52
echo_blades
Oh, that's...
00:45:53
Denis Tyrell
So it's a trade off. You got to cut it yourself, but then at least you don't have to take the mill scale off, but it's a pain in the ass.
00:45:59
echo_blades
Yeah. Maybe that's why it broke my porta band.
00:46:05
Denis Tyrell
You know what I did? I've been pushing this off for a while because every time I order steel, so I get all my steel cut to four inch pieces. You know this. Everything I do is four inch pieces, but I'm, especially in the last couple of builds, like just the, you know, your Damascus always frays a little bit at the ends. And you never, so you end up cutting off the end pieces.
00:46:33
Denis Tyrell
Well, when you start with four inch pieces, you have less length on those billets. So I'm going to switch to, I got to get rid of all the stock that I have of the four inch piece.
00:46:43
Denis Tyrell
And then I'm going to stay, I'm going to switch to six inch pieces.
00:46:47
echo_blades
That's where I'm at.
00:46:48
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, because yeah.
00:46:50
echo_blades
I went to the, for those, not to cut you off there, but the, um, for the Sanmise and the Gomise, I do a two inch by six and I get, I get a good billet out of, you know, just, uh, you know, either the five or the three, um, works out really good.
00:47:06
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, the width is not an issue for me because I'm doing like you know eight more four twelves.
00:47:09
echo_blades
Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah.
00:47:12
Denis Tyrell
I can make whatever width I want.
00:47:14
echo_blades
Sure.
00:47:14
Denis Tyrell
It's, but it's that starting, um, that starting stack.
00:47:15
echo_blades
Sure.
00:47:20
Denis Tyrell
I want to, I want to change.
00:47:20
echo_blades
Yeah. Yeah.
00:47:22
Denis Tyrell
So, uh, yeah.
00:47:24
echo_blades
Cool.
00:47:25
Denis Tyrell
And, uh, Lawrence knows to cut all my stuff into four inch pieces. I don't even tell him in the notes anymore, but I'll have to tell him now from now on to make it six inch.
00:47:33
echo_blades
Six inches is fine. There you go.
00:47:36
Denis Tyrell
That's what she said.
00:47:38
echo_blades
Look at you taking the server. Yeah. Well, I'm, uh, I think I'm going to miss my He just had a ah big a sale for Boxing Day, which I wanted to say, what what the but the fuck is Boxing Day?
00:47:53
Denis Tyrell
You know, it started as a British holiday. um
00:47:57
echo_blades
i I heard Ben Abbott talk about it on Hustle and Grind last week. He mentioned something about like that was their holiday as well. And then it reminded me that I forgot to ask you what the hell it was last week. so I'm super curious, but you're, you're a, a Hothian, so.

Sales, Supplies, and Knife Completion

00:48:18
Denis Tyrell
and So no, I don i swear, nobody, being I think everyone thinks that's when you throw your boxes out from Christmas.
00:48:24
echo_blades
Is it like boxing, like fighting day?
00:48:26
Denis Tyrell
I don't know. So I just googled it. um The holidays have all over time, but some of its traditions, yeah that's just bullshit. ah Exact origins of Boxing Day.
00:48:36
echo_blades
You don't know.
00:48:39
Denis Tyrell
It's not, and it's boxing. B-O-X-I-N-G. So it's not, yeah.
00:48:43
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:48:44
Denis Tyrell
Series include all, alms boxes, the name may come from the alms boxes that churches would put out to collect donations for the less fortunate, maybe Christmas boxes, the name may come from the Christmas boxes that the Lord, Lords and aristocrats would give their servants after the parties filled with leftovers and small gifts. So it's probably, you know, the the Lord's given their leftovers to to the peasants.
00:49:18
Denis Tyrell
That's Boxing Day. We celebrate it.
00:49:21
echo_blades
I am very underwhelmed right now. I thought there was a
00:49:25
Denis Tyrell
And the second one, there's one more. The name may come from the practice of giving servants boxes of gifts on the day after Christmas as they were required to work on Christmas Day.
00:49:36
echo_blades
Hmm. All right. Well, again, underwhelmed, but that said the boxing day sale was over and I did, uh, I had a ah pretty, pretty big order coming in, but a bunch of quarter inch steel and some stuff, handle materials, uh, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
00:49:41
Denis Tyrell
ah
00:49:54
echo_blades
But I don't, I think I'm going to miss it now. I'm not even going to see it until I get back.
00:50:00
Denis Tyrell
No, have them send it to my house.
00:50:06
Denis Tyrell
I just got some nickel sheets from him because I needed nickel sheets, so.
00:50:07
echo_blades
la
00:50:11
echo_blades
Nice. But I've seen people ah already unboxing their Boxing Day sale items. But yeah, go check out Maritime Knife Supply. ah Tell them the boys at Triple T sent you.
00:50:27
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, do it.
00:50:29
echo_blades
Do it now.
00:50:31
Denis Tyrell
Let's, uh, why don't we move on and make her spotlight? Who, uh, you got this week?
00:50:37
echo_blades
Um, I'm not ready for that audible.
00:50:39
Denis Tyrell
Oh, okay. Fine.
00:50:43
echo_blades
Do yours first. Jeez.
00:50:45
Denis Tyrell
Um, this week, I actually, um, wasn't following this person and I saw, um, uh, I do follow Jocelyn, Jocelyn Frazier, uh, and,
00:51:00
Denis Tyrell
um and saw a picture of a knife that I thought was really cool and I looked at the maker and he's a journeyman and um Hold on. I gotta to bring it up here to get the details um It is ah Ram knives are a mm knives.
00:51:17
Denis Tyrell
No underscore. So Ram knives And it's Peyton Ram. He's an ABS journeyman also a fortune and fired champion but um
00:51:26
echo_blades
o
00:51:28
Denis Tyrell
Got to looking through his knives and some really really like just beautifully clean lines beautiful knives um Going Yeah going down like he's got a folder if you scroll down like eight or nine or like a couple of pages He's got a feather folder Yeah, that one's really really nice really nice.
00:51:37
echo_blades
Hmm I'll see some folders feather has what I'm looking at yeah
00:51:54
Denis Tyrell
So Yeah
00:51:54
echo_blades
I like ah that black finish he's got there. Really good stuff. Yeah, that's a good one.
00:51:59
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, so definitely go check him out. He has got 1,627 followers. So go give him a follow and check out his stuff. um Always like to support fellow ABS folks. So go give him a, go check him out. That's Peyton Ram at Ram Knives.
00:52:23
echo_blades
Very cool. That's a good one. Um, I got our buddy. Tortuga blade works. Uh, Brian Hennenkamp. Um, amazing maker. Absolutely amazing maker. Good dude. Um, and I was just kind of going through, um,
00:52:46
echo_blades
Oh, he just popped in my head there. I was seeing, he was making the last thing I see is a, is a watch that he, uh, he was doing, but, um, yeah, he is at tortuga blade works, um, on Instagram, no underscores or anything 22 K followers.
00:53:05
echo_blades
Um, ER director, maker, husband, father, son, dreamer, and he's a pirate. So he's got all the kinds of really cool, uh, um, pirate-esque.
00:53:16
echo_blades
I can't think of the name of the finish that he has.
00:53:18
Denis Tyrell
oh The shipwreck patina yeah, yeah, I like it
00:53:19
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:53:21
echo_blades
Yeah. The shipwreck patina. Yeah. Really cool. Does those stainless things. So, um, yeah, he's kinda, uh, been, uh, down and not down and out, but just ah out of the game here for a little while.
00:53:36
echo_blades
I wanted to check in and show them some love. And I suggest that sir you guys do the same. um Just pop in and say what's up to Brian. And if you're not following them, definitely go do that.
00:53:49
echo_blades
You're missing out on some awesome stuff here. So um that's that's who I got.
00:53:55
Denis Tyrell
Cool.
00:53:57
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:53:59
Denis Tyrell
We should mention another one of our sponsors, Mr. Travis Haynes over at Pelican Paste, which I'm getting ready to put on this knife when I finish it. um hard He is the master of hard wax, soft wax. He's got the Pelican oil, the hand salve, the soap, um really, really good stuff. um It will definitely be going on the blue on this puzzle knife.
00:54:24
Denis Tyrell
when it's all done. So go check out some Pelican Paste and use the discount code TTT10. And you can also get Pelican Paste at our buddy Lawrence's site at Maritime Knife Supply. So go check them out.
00:54:41
echo_blades
Yeah, that's another thing I finished up, I forgot so to talk about was I finished that knife that I forged at Maker's Camp.
00:54:53
echo_blades
the Yeah, so I beat ya, finally.
00:54:53
Denis Tyrell
That's what I'm working on. That's what the puzzle knife is.
00:54:59
Denis Tyrell
Hey, wait, which which maker camp did you forge it at?
00:55:02
echo_blades
This was, no.
00:55:02
Denis Tyrell
The one last year or the one year before?
00:55:04
echo_blades
No, I have the very first one, not finished. I have whatever we did at the the second one, not finished, but this one, the one we did at the last time. Um, yeah, that one got done cause I was, wanted to do an integral chef and then I got a little over.
00:55:23
echo_blades
zealous with the power hammer and thought I wrecked the thing. So it was going to be a hidden Tang integral turned into a fully forged knife with ah with the forged handle. um And somehow I saved the blade and and ground that all out. and um But I do bring it up because Pelican pace for the win. After I had Scotch Brided, you know, all of the Forge scale kind of thing, which I was, I don't know, maybe this is common knowledge for everybody else, but I was kind of worried that that the Scotch Brite was just going to rip and make all that 4G stuff shiny, but it didn't. It just kind of brushed it up and.
00:56:09
Denis Tyrell
told it a bit, you know.
00:56:09
echo_blades
Give it an yeah, dulled it a little bit and gave it a nice little ah finish there, which I lathered up with Pelican pace and it came out really nice. So I mean, the I say it's really nice and it's a win for me, but I think you see it. I mean, the handle is probably a quarter inch offset of the blade and in some angles because, you know, just how it how it ended up. But I'm not selling it. It's going to it's going to hang out at my house and be like some kind of a meat slicer or something.
00:56:40
Denis Tyrell
You're going to have slices that are really big at one end and not just big.
00:56:44
echo_blades
No, no, no, I'll just, you know, come around from behind it, you know?
00:56:49
Denis Tyrell
You're going to have ramp slices.
00:56:49
echo_blades
It'll work out good. Yeah, it's just an offset. It's always a different kind of offset. ah Literally offset, yeah.
00:56:56
Denis Tyrell
it's it's Yeah, your version of the offset serrated with those serrations.
00:56:59
echo_blades
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's a horizontal offset. Yeah.
00:57:05
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:57:05
Denis Tyrell
the
00:57:05
echo_blades
Uh, but yeah, the Pelican pace really, uh, shined it up and I'm sure it's going to protect it through its life of taco cutting. So yeah, which you guys want to hear a fun fact.
00:57:16
Denis Tyrell
tacos. This is bullshit. Say it.
00:57:30
echo_blades
ah but Dennis and I went, and had lunch and we had tacos.
00:57:36
Denis Tyrell
Wednesday, yeah.
00:57:38
echo_blades
Okay. And then Saturday I said, let's go get some tacos. And he goes, we just had tacos. And I almost slapped him.
00:57:49
echo_blades
Cause I don't think there's ever been a day in my life where I've been like, I just had tacos. So I'm going to just say it. Dennis hates tacos.
00:58:00
Denis Tyrell
Do not hate tacos. I hate tacos every day.
00:58:03
echo_blades
No, that's what I'm saying. That's, that's, I am worried about your safety next time we travel.
00:58:06
Denis Tyrell
And it's funny, I could eat a peanut butter sandwich every day, but tacos can't do it.
00:58:14
Denis Tyrell
I want to bring peanut butter and loaf of bread.
00:58:17
echo_blades
There's not a fucking peanut butter. There's not peanut butter sandwich Tuesdays. That's how I mean, that's all in hearing there.
00:58:22
Denis Tyrell
No, they don't need a special day. It's an everyday thing.
00:58:25
echo_blades
Get out of here, dude.
00:58:29
echo_blades
But yeah. So. And then I also wanted to shout out our buddy, uh, Noah, um, at any out river forge and now newly, uh, acquired business venture of, uh, send ducks. Um, I thought that was really cool. Got a, got a message from him and, uh, you know, and I kind of had chatting a little bit, so I knew it was coming, but, um, I'm stoked for him to come up with a pretty cool idea to just randomly send a bunch of ducks to somebody for no reason at all.
00:58:59
echo_blades
And I think it's great. It's either going to be a fantastic hit or a good time, no matter what. I think it's a win-win.
00:59:06
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I do think he should have called it Send Duck Send, though.
00:59:11
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:59:12
Denis Tyrell
I think that would have been funny.
00:59:12
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:59:13
Denis Tyrell
ah You know what?
00:59:13
echo_blades
Yeah.
00:59:14
Denis Tyrell
I think we should all get on the site and send Noah ducks.
00:59:21
Denis Tyrell
That's what we should do.
00:59:22
echo_blades
Sure. He does have stacks. I've already done it.
00:59:23
Denis Tyrell
yeah Really?
00:59:25
echo_blades
I, yeah, not to him, but I, I,
00:59:28
Denis Tyrell
You didn't send me ducks, did you?
00:59:30
echo_blades
No, I don't like you.
00:59:30
Denis Tyrell
Good.
00:59:31
echo_blades
No. Although, you know, people that you don't like can get ducks too. And that was, that was part of the pitch, but, uh, I don't know. I thought it was a cool, fun little, you know, break from the norm and and pretty cool.
00:59:43
echo_blades
So I wanted to give them a shout out. And if you're not checking it out, I think the IG account is send ducks official is the, is the name of the IG. But, um, yeah, go send somebody some ducks.
00:59:53
Denis Tyrell
he He could have messed with Ryan and called it duck trinkets.
00:59:57
echo_blades
Oh.
01:00:00
echo_blades
Yeah, he could have.
01:00:02
Denis Tyrell
I would have liked that. That would have been good.
01:00:06
echo_blades
That's yeah, I love that.
01:00:09
Denis Tyrell
His co-host has a ah website called Dick Trinkets. So he does.
01:00:14
echo_blades
and I don't does he or does he just have the domain? I don't know. I'm thinking I don't think he's yeah.
01:00:18
Denis Tyrell
Well, I don't know if yeah i don't know if he set it up.
01:00:22
echo_blades
Yeah, even every other.
01:00:26
Denis Tyrell
i'm And I'm afraid to Google that.
01:00:29
echo_blades
Why?
01:00:30
Denis Tyrell
but Dick trinkets, I don't think so.
01:00:32
echo_blades
Oh, go to Penn Island to where you're at it.
01:00:45
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, you told me that one already.
01:00:46
echo_blades
a
01:00:50
Denis Tyrell
ah We're devolving this podcast.
01:00:52
echo_blades
a
01:00:57
echo_blades
Sorry, what?
01:00:57
Denis Tyrell
Who did you pull that on, someone at work or something?
01:00:59
echo_blades
who ah Doug, somebody did it to me. My dumb ass went after it.
01:01:08
echo_blades
ah Oh, family show.
01:01:09
Denis Tyrell
yeah
01:01:11
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, right.
01:01:12
echo_blades
Pennisland.com.
01:01:12
Denis Tyrell
What kind of family do you have?
01:01:15
echo_blades
Mine's very fucked up. I promise that. Oh, man. That's good.
01:01:22
Denis Tyrell
Oh.
01:01:22
echo_blades
So I can't think of a better time after that shit show, the transition into some really good news that we have some

New Sponsorship and DMV Frustrations

01:01:30
echo_blades
cool news. Anyways, I am excited.
01:01:33
echo_blades
Dennis and I are both excited to welcome aboard ah Rock Solid Scales as an official sponsor of the Triple T ah podcast. um They are the makers of ah grip tech scales, which um we've seen a lot about, and I've ah recently just, I'm about to finish up a ah build with it, but it's the grip. The gri scales have some grippy, after you finish them up, um it's it's an interesting process because for,
01:02:11
echo_blades
What, um, I will say Dennis and I, not that we make similar things at all, but, um, the way that we finish, um, handle scales out as a, you know, as a, uh,
01:02:24
echo_blades
high sand grit, you know, high finish and ah and a buffing ah for like a a big shine. And and these particular grips, grip tech skills, um you kind of go after it with a lower grit and they finish out really cool when you sandblast them to give it that extra little grip ah texture.
01:02:43
echo_blades
um So go check out Rock Solid Scales. um And you can use the discount code TTT10 for 10% off when you're doing that.
01:02:58
Denis Tyrell
Nice.
01:02:58
echo_blades
So I got a little blurb here I'm going to read. It says, Griptech is a revolutionary rubber resin composite. Griptech is unlike any material on the market and an ideal For use on hunting knives, fillet, kitchen knives, and your favorite EDC, Cryptek will provide uncompromising grip in the most intense situations, completely waterfoo waterproof, weatherproof, and incredibly durable. Trust Cryptek for...
01:03:22
echo_blades
your most adventurous projects. Grip tech is simple to work with, no special tools requires, and simply shape and finish as usual. And for the best results, um sand you finished between 200, 220 and 400, and sandblasts with an 80-grit aluminum oxide, or a at about 40 to 60 PSI.
01:03:43
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
01:03:43
echo_blades
um I had zero problems working with it at all. um I had a ah thinner piece, I think, that, when I was routing the edges, it probably would have been better suited for a little more um meet on the, or width on the scale.
01:04:01
echo_blades
um But i don't I don't think anybody's doing less than one inch scales, you know, so, but yeah, we're excited to have have them on board.
01:04:09
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
01:04:14
echo_blades
So again, rock solid scales, use the discount code triplet10 for 10% off.
01:04:20
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, they're really cool. I mean, I have a set. I haven't used them yet, but it's they're like little tiny little tiny tiny, little beads embedded in a resin, if I'm correct, right? um And as the resin wears, you feel those little beads. Those are like the grippy parts. um So it's very it's really cool. It's like no other handle material um that I've used.
01:04:46
Denis Tyrell
and And it does remind me of like, if you've ever worked in a kitchen, you know, the knives they use in kitchens are not like the fancy knives that most of us make.
01:04:57
Denis Tyrell
They were like the plastic handle kind that have that, like, exactly the fake texture, the, because they don't want bacteria.
01:04:57
echo_blades
right.
01:05:01
echo_blades
The, the fake texture. Yeah.
01:05:07
Denis Tyrell
They don't want, you know, their work knives. And that's what this grip tech reminds me of. Like, Hey, I want to make a work knife that is, going to protect from the elements and things like that. So great application for that.
01:05:18
echo_blades
Yeah. Yeah. And Matt ah made like huge, he's really pushing, um making a lot of progress here this past year.
01:05:28
echo_blades
um So we want to support him as he goes into the new year with a you know some awesome momentum from from a great year last year. So happy to have him on board, but thanks, Matt.
01:05:41
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, welcome.
01:05:43
echo_blades
Yep. um boom
01:05:47
Denis Tyrell
I think we could pay all the bills.
01:05:50
echo_blades
I think so.
01:05:51
Denis Tyrell
yeah Man, so that means I'm done with you. I don't have to deal with you for two weeks. Folks, we're gonna have new co-hosts next week. and do Did I tell you who the co-hosts are?
01:06:07
echo_blades
You're going to keep us in suspense.
01:06:09
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, yeah, I'm still gonna keep you in suspense. We got two co-hosts next week. I haven't figured out the week after, but we will, yeah, yeah, I knew you were gonna say that, it does.
01:06:15
echo_blades
Nice.
01:06:18
echo_blades
You're telling me it takes two people to fill my shoes. Jeez. That's, that's, that's cool. I do want to say one thing before we get out of here. Uh, for, I know everybody just loves California. Um, I just, you know, all the messages I get from everybody are just like, wow, I can't wait for everyone to come there and stay there. And, um, but, uh, cool little tidbit is that I went to um trying to get my truck registered and The California DMV let me know that they were not going to let me because we have to smog our vehicles, pay ridiculous, you know, a high dollar fee to just to register it.
01:07:00
echo_blades
um But they weren't going to let me do that until I got a recall done on my, on my truck from like, I don't know.
01:07:12
Denis Tyrell
ye Yeah, that's crazy. So they're preventing you from renewing your registration until you got a recall done. Is this happening in any other state?
01:07:12
echo_blades
It's been a long time.
01:07:22
echo_blades
Yes.
01:07:23
Denis Tyrell
Is this like a countrywide DMV thing or are we just, you know, the lucky recipients of bullshit?
01:07:33
echo_blades
I almost lost my shit when my wife told me I was like, what do you mean? Like, I'm gonna get it. You should do the, you should do the, the recalls, right? It's, there's, there's no, it's just time, right? Taking time off to work, drop the truck off at the dealership, you know, do this whole song and dance.
01:07:51
echo_blades
But, um, yeah, I was super, super surprised by that.
01:07:54
Denis Tyrell
It, and it must, there must be levels of the, like there must be considered safety recalls. Maybe the only do because ah there's probably a ton of recalls.
01:08:01
echo_blades
Yeah.
01:08:07
Denis Tyrell
I may have, if you actually look up your vehicle, I think there's a site where you can look up well what recalls have been issued on your vehicle. I guarantee all you folks out there, you have recalls on your vehicle. You just don't know about that.
01:08:18
echo_blades
Agreed.
01:08:18
Denis Tyrell
They're just not telling you because they don't want to pay for them.
01:08:21
echo_blades
or you got a notice and you're like, oh, yeah, I'll get to it and never did.
01:08:25
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, but I would imagine these are like safety ones that now they're not letting you renew your car.
01:08:25
echo_blades
But until nine years later.
01:08:31
echo_blades
One of them is a passenger airbag. The thing is, that we don't I don't I don't drive that truck very often, but I am getting ready to to get it to hopefully if my son gets his shit together, I'll get it on.
01:08:43
echo_blades
So I need to get done anyways, but thank you, DMV.
01:08:45
Denis Tyrell
Well, now, and now everyone Everyone understands why we have the highest vehicle registration in the entire country by about three X.
01:08:57
echo_blades
Yeah.
01:08:57
Denis Tyrell
How much is the registration on your truck?
01:09:01
echo_blades
I don't know the, this year's I was going to say, but it's been no less than five, five 50 for the last 10 years.
01:09:02
Denis Tyrell
500?
01:09:11
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I'm sure there's states where they're, they are saying what the F minus $75 guaranteed.
01:09:17
echo_blades
Yeah. Oh, it's fine. Every bit of 500 bucks minimum. Yeah.
01:09:20
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
01:09:20
echo_blades
Plus the smog.
01:09:22
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. My, my, my Jeep is $300.
01:09:22
echo_blades
So.
01:09:24
Denis Tyrell
I have a two door Jeep Wrangler and it's $300.
01:09:28
echo_blades
Yeah, and it's got, it's got to go by way too.
01:09:29
Denis Tyrell
It's ridiculous.
01:09:31
echo_blades
But anyways, yeah, I just thought that was great. And I wanted to share that. So now I've completely had enough of you and I'm going to give everybody a break from me and my ridiculous rhetoric for a couple of weeks. Enjoy yourself in the new year.
01:09:43
echo_blades
Take care. Dennis, don't get us fired or put or put everybody to sleep, please.
01:09:48
Denis Tyrell
i'll
01:09:52
Denis Tyrell
Well, which one's worse?
01:09:53
echo_blades
yeah Yeah, put them to sleep. Have a cool story about you fucked up. but
01:09:59
Denis Tyrell
ah Jared, we'll need an audio clip sent from the cruise so we know you're alive. and It hasn't sunk or hit an iceberg.
01:10:08
echo_blades
Yeah, I think I'll be doing some plenty stories to rub it in your face and stuff, so.
01:10:12
Denis Tyrell
Oh yeah, so send me a couple of audio clips and maybe maybe we'll feature them.
01:10:15
echo_blades
Yeah.
01:10:18
Denis Tyrell
We'll play a game.
01:10:19
echo_blades
Oh.
01:10:19
Denis Tyrell
What is Jared doing today?
01:10:21
echo_blades
Yes. Do it.
01:10:25
Denis Tyrell
All right, I've had enough of you but good luck on your work trip and have fun on your vacation.
01:10:32
echo_blades
Thank you, buddy.
01:10:32
Denis Tyrell
Yeah.
01:10:34
Denis Tyrell
All right, playing us out.
01:10:34
echo_blades
Peace.
01:10:36
echo_blades
Do it.
01:10:43
echo_blades
No, no, no, no.
01:10:51
echo_blades
Should have never gave those guys sound bites. And that's a wrap.
