Yankees Trade Deadline Moves

00:00:04
Speaker
Yankee Stadium just got Jazzy. The New York Yankees have picked up Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the trade deadline. He's been here for, eh, who am I kidding, probably about a week and a half now and three weeks by the time this gets uploaded. He's been playing really well and the team's looking pretty good. All of a sudden, this team is on an upward trend.

Hall of Famers Discussion

00:00:22
Speaker
What's going on, everybody? Welcome to Championship or Bus with Max, Zach, and Josh. We have a very fun 1928 episode for you today.
00:00:30
Speaker
Lot of hole of famers, not a lot of returners, and a lot of trade deadline stuff. About, eh, today's August 6th, so we're only about a week behind, not too bad. ah Continuously behind the curve, love to see it. But we're gonna turn to start Josh for the game breakdowns.

1928 World Series Recap

00:00:44
Speaker
Alright, so the 1928 World Series, New York Yankees vs St. Louis Cardinals, a rematch of 1926 when the Cardinals won. And before the series even started, Hall of Famer Walter Johnson put on a record, he thought the Cardinals were going to make short work of the Yankees. Well, in game one, the Yankees came out hot, opening the scoring at the bottom of the first inning with a Babe Ruth 2 out double, followed by a Garreg RBI single.
00:01:07
Speaker
Attack on two more in the fourth inning when Ruth doubled and Bob Musil homeward. Carls will score one the seventh on a Jim Bottomley homer, but the Yankees will get that back in the eighth with three consecutive singles from Cohen and Ruth and Garreg. Wade Hoyt through a beautiful three-hitter, giving up just one just giving up one home run, one run in the game.
00:01:22
Speaker
for a game when Yankees win. Game two, Yankees struck even harder in the bottom of the first inning, with the Garak hitting a three-run home run. But the Cardinals would get all that back. A walk followed by a Jimmy Wilson double, a rabbit-Marinville single, and an error, the game was tied.
00:01:38
Speaker
After for that inning, Yankees manager Miller Huggins helped out his pitcher George Pipgress to straighten out a delivery problem, and Pipgress would then go on to allow just two hits and three walks for the rest of the game. On offense for the Yankees, they would retake the lead in the bottom of the second of a Bob Musil double, and it would score four more runs in the third and one in the seventh for a commanding 9-3 win. In this game, 41-year-old future Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander was the pitcher for the Cardinals, and he got absolutely shelled.
00:02:06
Speaker
yeah despite his heroic fear before oh yes he did um In game three, Cardinals would be the ones to strike first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs on a gym-bottomly double.

Yankees' World Series Dominance

00:02:17
Speaker
Yankees would get one of those back in the second on a Garreg Homer, and it would take the lead in the fourth on another Garreg Homer, this time a two-run ah inside the Parker. ah The Cardinals would tie the game in the fifth when a Taylor Doubt hit was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but that's the only run they were able to score. In the sixth, the Yankees would push across three runs, thanks to some timely hitting, a costly error, and a double steal.
00:02:38
Speaker
They added another in the seventh and won the game seven to three. Game four, so the Cardinals opened the scoring in the third inning, but the Yankees would end up tying it in the fourth on a Babe Ruth solo home run. Cardinals got that run back and would hold the lead into the seventh inning. 21 game-winning South Pole, Will Shurtle, had an 0-2 count on Babe Ruth, who turned to say something to the catcher.
00:03:00
Speaker
Seizing what he thought was a great opportunity, Sheryl quick pitched him. So, no wind-up. And threw what he thought was strike three. But, at this time, quick pitches were legal in the National League, but illegal in the American League, therefore they were not allowed in the World Series. okay wow So, the National League, the home plate umpire was National League ah umpire, and he called, no pitch.
00:03:26
Speaker
and everybody was pissed. So Ruth got back in the box, took two balls, I don't know, two count, hit a home run and tied the game. Of course he did. And then Garrett got up and hit a home run going back to back to give the Yankees the The Yankees would score twice more than the seventh and Ruth would finish off that inning hitting his third home run of the game. Jeez.
00:03:50
Speaker
ah St. Louis scored one more run the bottom the ninth to make it seven to three But that was their last run and future Hall of Famer Frankie fish would hit a fly ball into left field that was foul and caught by Ruth right at the wall as Carlos fans were hitting him with newspapers and and game programs and Ruth merely just ran into the dugout laughing while on the wall and Ruth called that game with the three home runs the biggest role of his career and Yankees would sweep the World Series winning four games to none and on
00:04:22
Speaker
Yeah, that's sweet for the New York Yankees moving into the Hall of Famers. Of course, yes, our their umpires No, Billy Evans and no Bill Klum this time. No. Wow, they're bill bill McGowan Some reason all the umpires named bill for some reason but anyway moving into

Hall of Fame Candidates Debate

00:04:39
Speaker
um The st. Louis Cardinals so for today, it's no new Hall of Famers So there was going to originally be no game of this your Hall of Famer But I have something new for you guys a little twist. Let's get through these first. I St. Louis Cardinals, you want to hear my rankings are go back to our 1926 episode. Just save some time. Cause there's so many people to cover, but Bill McKechnie, our manager, uh, second appearance, he's one and one in the series. We have Grover Cleveland, Alexander, who Josh mentioned got whacked. Oh, and one 19.8 ERA, 11 earned runs, five innings pitched two to four strikeout to walk ratio. Happy trails to him on this podcast is he only plays a couple more years and he never makes it back here.
00:05:19
Speaker
Jim bottomly one of our basement Hall of Famer is a second appearance in the World Series He's now one-in-one as well He had three for 14 with one home run one triple and three runs batted in so Josh brought him up quite a few times Because his hits that he got were big ones, but didn't really hit that well um But it was a stat line today's general managers would love a 214 batting average 84 OPS Well, so all a job That's true very narrow timeme ah Frankie Frisch, fifth appearance, he's now two and three in the World Series. He went three for 13 with all singles, one run batted in and two stolen bases. Chick Haffey, second appearance, one and one, three for 15, all singles and a walk. Jesse Haynes, his second World Series appearance, he went one and one, I'm sorry, he's now one and one in the series, pitched one game, went 0 and 1. Three earned runs in sixth innings pitch, which comes out to a 4.5 ERA.
00:06:16
Speaker
which sounds bad, but when you think about it, three runs six and usually isn't all that bad. That's technically a quality start. Yeah. Uh, three strikeouts, three walks. So not a terrible outing. Remember strikeout numbers were low at this point in baseball.
00:06:30
Speaker
And Rabbit Maranville, who hasn't been talked about in a while for us, but it is actually a second appearance. um He's one and one in the series, and this will be his last one. ah Four for 13 with a double and a stolen base. ah He'll play six more years, but he'll never make it back here. And he was a pretty early Hall of Famer as well for someone that probably is a basement guy. Moving into the Yankees.
00:06:54
Speaker
Herb Penick, so this is a weird one. So I remember a couple episodes ago when, not not even a couple episodes ago, maybe like 10 to 12 episodes ago, where I was saying like, what counts as being a World Series champion? So Herb Penick, this would be the second World Series that he won that he didn't play in.
00:07:19
Speaker
So it's his fourth, it's just, I guess it would be two for four in series that he played in. But if you count the ones he didn't play in, he'd be his sixth appearance in his fourth title.
00:07:32
Speaker
But it's weird, so I just wanted to throw him in there. Obviously he didn't play, so no stats registered. Miller Huggins, it's his third and final World Series Championship and his sixth appearance. So this is where the change of the guard comes in. We'll be hearing from Joe McCarthy pretty soon. um Happy Trails, Mr. Huggins. He manages one more season. Spoiler alert, we will not be talking about the Yankees in 1929.
00:07:55
Speaker
but a great

Yankees Legends' Performances

00:07:56
Speaker
career nonetheless. Earl Combs. It's his second ring, his third appearance. He didn't play much. He went 0 for 1 with a run batted in. A half-hearted welcome to Leo DeRocher. I don't know if you guys know who he is yet, but we'll be talking about him quite a bit in the 40s. So DeRocher was a player on the Yankees. This was his first full season, and he had a solid playing career with two top 10 MVP finishes. He was in the Hall of Fame for his work as a manager of Dem Bum Brooklyn Dodgers. He's actually part of the 42 movie. So he and um names escaping me right now for some reason. um Walter Alston, the two of them um had different shifts as manager during that time period.
00:08:40
Speaker
But he managed the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, Chicago Cubs, and Houston Astros. And I know my grandpa somewhere above smiling, hearing this name being mentioned. But we'll be talking about him a lot more in the 40s and the 50s episodes. So the rankings to be announced later. But in the postseason, he went 0 for 2 with a strikeout as a player.
00:08:57
Speaker
Wait, wait. Third championship, sixth appearance. He went 2-0 with a 1.5 ERA. He threw 18 innings and only gave up three runs. So damn good. 14 and 6 strike out to walk ratio. Tony Luzieri, second title, third appearance. Three for 12 with a double, two stolen bases. Now we get to the good stuff.
00:09:16
Speaker
and wanting a little more time on these guys. So, Babe Ruth obviously, his sixth title in nine appearances. He went 10 for 16, three home runs, three doubles, four runs batted in. So now for you um guys who like your rate stats a little bit more, listen to this. A 625 batting average, 647 on base.
00:09:38
Speaker
a 1.375 slugging and a 2.022 OPS. Jesus. If you think that's nuts, just wait. I have one more. Lou Gehrig. As Josh mentioned, you can kind of imagine what these numbers are. So, Lou Gehrig is the second title in his third World Series appearance. He went 6 for 11, 4 home runs, a double, and 9 runs batted in. And if rate stats are more your speed, 545 batting average, 706 on base, 1.727 slugging, and a 2.433 OPS.
00:10:12
Speaker
So all I see here is holy crap. So now... and It's six hits and five of them for extra bases. yeah And eleven at bats. It's freakish. and It's like what Bobby Witt's doing right now. yeah but And the other six times they walked him. He had as many walks as the times he got out. No, he had more walks than the times he got out. That's insane. yeah But if you guys thought we were going to escape, is he a Hall of Famer tonight? I am going to put you on the spot as I said before. um And I figure in these times when we don't have any new Hall of Famers, I can throw out someone who played on one of the two teams but that either didn't appear in the World Series or we don't get to talk about as much for whatever reason.

Don Mattingly's Hall of Fame Case

00:10:54
Speaker
So I'm going to throw out a little more modern guy for you guys tonight. A member of the, um not quite a member of the actually, he just missed being part of the 90s Yankees dynasty.
00:11:05
Speaker
And that's Don Mattingly. So I don't have it written out, in but I do have a stats right here in front of me. um He had 200 hits in three different seasons. He led the league in hits twice. And his career high was 238. He had 30 home runs in three seasons, 222 career, 1,099 runs batted in.
00:11:26
Speaker
Won a batting title in 1984, a career slash line of 307, 358, 471, and 830. He won an MVP.
00:11:38
Speaker
I finished second in an MVP one time. He has another top five MVP finish and ah a fourth top 10 MVP finish and he has nine gold gloves at first base. So going a little more modern here and he made six also teams as well. I'm going to ask you guys and this is going to be a fun one. Is he a Hall of Famer?
00:12:01
Speaker
I'd like to hear Zach his opinion on this one. Oh God. I know how would rather I go first. No, I'm struggling. it's It's really, really difficult, actually. I know. I know. What? I know. Yeah. it's For me, it's a real borderline. um But I'm thinking. God, don't think spit it out. Come on. I would just say no. I honestly, my gut reaction is no, unfortunately.
00:12:31
Speaker
Disagree. He's Hall of Famer. Really? Yes. librarybbra ah He had a really short career, but when he played he was dominant And he had a five-year span where he was arguably one of the best players in baseball And he was the best first baseman in baseball for half a decade if not longer Yeah, he he played he played basically 13 years give or take um And he was great he was great and every one of those seasons even until he retired
00:13:03
Speaker
I'll be honest with you guys, I'm really freaking torn on this one. yeah um ah want I'll ask you this, not to go too far off topic, but how do you guys feel about Keith Hernandez as a Hall of Famer? Joey Votto as a Hall of Famer? Because I'll run like a quick comp to show you. I have both of those guys on my list, by the way. i think For me, Votto is there for sure.
00:13:29
Speaker
And I think Keith Hernandez is close, but I mean, he's got the war. So yeah, I'd also put Keith Hernandez in there. I got Keith in. I mean, if you look at Vado stats compared to Mattingly, Mattingly played about 300 more games. Mattingly has more hits than him. Mattingly has a higher batting average than him. The on-base and slugging is a little low compared, um but they have the same amount of ulcer teams. They both won the same MVPs. Mattingly has a batting title and Vado doesn't. The case is pretty there. I mean, I lean no as well.
00:14:04
Speaker
But he's the one that I've been tweaking on for a while. um Right now I have Keith Hernandez as my floor Hall of Famer for first baseman. I think all three of those guys are basement level. I could be swayed on this one at any given moment. He's the one that like I really don't have a clear cut opinion on. Everybody else I can like fight tooth and nail on. But looking at the numbers between him and Hernandez,
00:14:30
Speaker
I'm not a war guy, Hernandez has 18 more, also played about 200 more games. Mattingly has about 60 more home runs and 20 more RBIs, but Hernandez wasn't a power hitter. But to hit 296 and have 11 gold gloves is impactful. But same time, having a 307 average and 9 gold gloves is also pretty similar, right? But Hernandez was a big part of two title teams for two different big market franchises in St. Louis and the Mets. yeah So that's where I kind of gained separation where I feel like he's like, they might've been equal players in terms of talent level, just had different skillsets. I think Hernandez might've been a little more historically significant in terms of winning.
00:15:22
Speaker
Maybe yeah and the two oracle gloves and obviously, but yeah, it's like tough because if you It's kind of like if you put one in you have to put all of them in if you and if you choose to leave them out then I don't think you should put any of them in, right? I agree. You know what? You're right Zach. I don't know. I don't know how I I don't know how I feel about the that postseason Point that you're bringing up there. I Think it's an extra credit kind of thing.
00:15:48
Speaker
Yeah. was Yeah. Okay. I yeah i was going to say it's like gravy on top, but i walk up I wouldn't knock a guy. Like I don't blame Dale Murphy for like playing on some rough brave teams at times. Yeah. I mean, surely Tony's already a Hall of Famer from everything that I hear. And when was the last time he was in the playoffs? I wholeheartedly agree with that. So I, my, I'm just saying like, if you're borderline and you, you know, did your job in the post season, that might bump you up for me.
00:16:18
Speaker
like I see no to Jack Morris because I don't I don't really even call him a borderline guy But I get why people say yes because he was money when it mattered Okay, it' um so Mikey, let me ask you this then like Mattingly has the really good managerial experience I think he wouldn't matter the year like that with that decision at all It's a great question because that's not really like there's no precedent for it if you're asking you what I would personally do and it would bump them up for me. Are you putting the guy in as a player? Are you putting the guy in to put the guy in? I'm putting him in as a baseball lifer. With a career, yeah, sort of thing. like But then if you do that, cho let's say he never let's say he didn't win the title in 2021. Are you putting Dusty Baker in the Hall of Fame as that same idea? Are you putting Felipe Alou in? um Are you putting in Bob Euchre?
00:17:11
Speaker
So there's a lot of guys that fit that mold. I think the only guy who really would be an example of getting in from a baseball life would be Gil Hodges, who I was very happy got in. I don't think he was quite there as a player. He didn't have enough time to do what he needed to do as a manager, but when you hit 370 home runs in that era and you win a title for the 69 meds, you grade up, you know what I mean? i'm I'm almost kind of convincing myself to put Mattingly in here.
00:17:43
Speaker
I actually, I actually talk about it more. It makes sense. It just, I always say the career stats are low, but like compared to Vado and Hernandez, they're very similar. Yeah. I'm just a stickler. And if I'm not going to put one in, like, I wouldn't put any of them. I don't know how you can't vote for Mattingly. that he hit no manetttttingly You're a Hall of Famer. I'm i'm putting it on the list. I did it. It's done. Number 22. He's now my new bottom Hall of Famer. 22 Mattingly. I'm writing this in right now. It's done.
00:18:13
Speaker
So I've been borderline on this for too long. All about the list. I convinced myself. I just i just can't believe Zach's saying no when a guy to hit 307 for his career. Yeah, it is a Zach candidate for sure. This is this is this is that absolutely a Zach candidate. Let's get a 90 player two thousand hits just yeah at least not getting in right. he he you know what he Yeah, he's a Hall of Famer. Why not? I want a man and he's close enough where like,
00:18:41
Speaker
It's funny though, he had won a batting title with 343, but he also had a season where he played every game and hit 352 and didn't win the batting title. But he lego league in hits, doubles, slugging, OPS and OPS plus. yeah With 31 home runs. And Josh, I am with you in the idea of like, I'm a peak guy too, where, you know, I've been a big advocate and we've talked about him here a million times about Johan Santana.
00:19:09
Speaker
If Maurer got in with his short little career, Mattingly should get in. Maurer ran on the curve because he was a catcher. Right. But I get i get your point. Yeah, I'm not. I'm putting Mattingly in. Why not? He's in. Thank you, Bush. The guy had a 14-year career and one of those years was seven games. So he had a 13-year career and he won nine gold gloves in 13 years. I can't wait for our Buster Posey discussion, fellas. I think Maurer. He's going to take up three podcasts out of six. The Maurer stats are objectively better though because Maurer had three batting titles.
00:19:40
Speaker
Am I comparing Maurer to Mattingly right now? I'll do it. Yeah. It's funny because my Sat Head subscription just renewed today, so we have it for at least another year. Amazing. um So, Maurer actually played about 100 more games. Actually, not 100. He played about seventy just under 75 more games than Mattingly. um He has 30 less hits.
00:20:04
Speaker
He has 80 less home runs, 170 less runs batted in. He actually has a 306 batting average created matting list 307. Mattingly beats him in slugging, OPS and OPS plus. Now in terms of accolades, they have an equal amount of all stars, an equal amount of MVPs. Maurer has an extra two batting titles. Mattingly has an extra six gold gloves and Maurer has an extra two silver sluggers. yeah i take i take I take these batting titles with a grain of salt here.
00:20:33
Speaker
They still matters to me. I mean, no, I'm not saying they don't matter, but to compare the two of them, I only had 352 that year. Like we just said, 350 didn't win. If you're saying that's your reason, then I'm cool with that. I'm completely cool with you saying that being your reasoning. I thought you were about to say that, like, batting average doesn't matter to you anymore. That's where, like... No, I'm just saying, but, like, you know... Exactly. But I'm still old-school in that regard. Like, it doesn't mean everything to me. And runs batted in doesn't mean everything to me anymore, but they mean...
00:21:02
Speaker
a good amount. Like the whole game. marijuana bag title hitting 328. Manly lost a bag title hitting 350. Yeah. And that's kind of what you're seeing this year where Steven Kwan's kind of falling off a bit kind of going back to our last step. Just a little interesting thought.
00:21:19
Speaker
I'll transition into the probably the most lackluster trade deadline I feel like in a few years.

Trade Deadline Analysis

00:21:26
Speaker
I don't know what else we can get into the thoughts. Yeah. We'll bring in the the numbers here, and not the numbers, the players. Start with the Big Bang Yankees. Everybody knows. Jazz Chisholm. Let's get jazzy. Let's get jazzy, baby. Mark Leiter Jr. Honestly, really solid bullpen edition. I'm not mad at this. And another bullpen arm, Enyaldo Santos from San Diego. And this is all without giving up any big top prospects. So, you know, hands off the cashman for it. But do we think it's enough?
00:21:59
Speaker
No. Yeah. I'll ask you this though, and I'm, you know, I'm not a Cashman apologist, but Josh, what was the move that Cashman should have done? I'm not saying it was a move you should have done. but oh i can canno not Oh, I can tell you. i wasn't that was That wasn't a question. That wasn't a question. What could he have done more? The question was, did he do enough to make the team win? No. Right, but what else was there? I mean, clarity as much as i I did want him, I did not lose an ounce of sleep when we didn't get him.
00:22:25
Speaker
No, I'm not saying that they run a great move out there, but I'm saying that they didn't make a move that but puts them in a territory to win. They still don't have a starter. If Garakol was getting fatigue eight starts into the season... Garakol should not be pitching. Let's hold on. Yeah, he can never rehab. He should not be pitching. I took around that I said he's not going to start when I'm going to see him, but I mean, he shouldn't be playing at all. No.
00:22:49
Speaker
But you got him, you got Cortez has been incredibly rocky. Rodon is still trash. Schmitz hurt, and I can't believe I'm saying he's been one of our best pitchers. I know, right? Gil is young and unpredictable. and unpredictable. Who am I missing? Strowman's been second half strong. Strowman is trash. Strowman's in second half form as always. Yeah. So.
00:23:13
Speaker
but that's what we kind of expected. I mean, I think Jazz is a great pick up for the team. I think it's exactly what we needed. We needed fun. Yeah, Jazz is great. We really needed fun. You know, light a fire under Torres's ass, or Torres is gonna be bye-bye. Oh, well, Torres is benched, and hopefully he'll be sitting on the bench every day. Yeah, he's not gonna be, but I'm glad they benched him the one time to show something. And honestly, like, the guys, like, Lamehi has been picking it up. Like, the team is gonna be all right. I actually feel pretty good, and it was ever since we picked up Jazz.
00:23:42
Speaker
It's a shame Stanton's actually coming back as Torres would have been a great D8 because he can't field for shit Yeah, but don't worry though. He can't he won't move to third because he's a second baseman guys Yeah, he's a he's a second baseman and the day after he says that he makes what three? Yeah, he has the most errors in the league at second base They moved him off of shortstop because he couldn't field the position and he still can't field the position. Yeah And it's not like it's not like he's booting the hard balls getting charged errors for it Like he can't even transit a ball off his glove properly ye like what are we doing? but 12 year olds could do that going back to jazz for a second
00:24:20
Speaker
i I've been coming around on this thing that I've been thinking about for years, and I don't even know if I've ever really discussed it on pod, but like the idea of chemistry mattering so much everywhere you go, and the full effort guys, the guys we need. Jazz obviously comes in with a lot of baggage, right? Like in terms of these perceived character issues. And we've seen it a couple times in recent memory when like Manny Machado signed with the Padres or Bryce Harper signed with the Daxvillees. But what I'm noticing though is that when these guys are in some bad situations,
00:24:52
Speaker
They're gonna be disgruntled, right? I mean, like if you're in a job that you hate, or a job where you feel like you're being mistreated, and you feel that you're you're not getting your you're not showing your true value because you're not being put in the positions to show that, you're gonna get annoyed too.
00:25:08
Speaker
So i kind of like I rule out the cancer theory, I guess, when they're in a bad situation now. At first, it was i and first it was all cancers are created equal. In this case, Jess Schism was on the Miami Marlins rotting away. I mean, who else was with him? Of course he wanted to be the man. He knew that he was better than everybody in the room. and you know I heard a story the other day.
00:25:33
Speaker
ah from Chisholm itself and obviously who knows how true this is or not but he was basically saying that when he showed up to the Marlins you know he was he was already like the big man on campus and and all had all these you know sponsorship deals and stuff where he had Tons of pairs of shoes and jewelry and stuff. And he said that guys were like taking his stuff and trashing it and destroying it on him. Like, yeah, I'd i'd be pretty pretty pissed off, too. Yeah. I mean, Jez Schism is the eighth grader who thinks he rules the school. And then he goes to high school and he sees Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, and he humbles up quick.
00:26:11
Speaker
Exactly. I think this is perfect fit. I think this is exactly what he needed. I think he knows it's what he needed and I think it's exactly what the Yankees needed. I think it's a great move for everybody involved. It's definitely what he needs. He's got the short porch now. Yeah, that too. He knows it too. He came in with the 314 shirt.
00:26:28
Speaker
Yeah. He knows exactly what he's getting into. And whenever you can get a former All-Star who's, what, 26 years old with multiple years of team control, you have to do it. All right. All right. All right. All right. We've got our former All-Star very lightly. We've got a guy with a career 250 batting average. Let's calm down here. The only reason why he's even sniffing an All-Star game is because he's on the Marlins. We got it on Fanboy, I think.
00:26:51
Speaker
Even worse. That's actually worse. all right I can't believe you admitted that out loud. I'm not admitting it out loud because he had a 138 OPS plus and an 860 OPS. John Scott made the All-Star game in the NHL on fan voting. Yeah, did John Scott have a 138 OPS plus? Was he 38% above average in anything he did? Okay. No.
00:27:09
Speaker
I'm not even sure. No matter what team he was on. And whenever you have a chance to get a 26 year old who can hit 138 OPS plus over a season with multiple years of team control, you have to do it. And if it doesn't work, you move them. You cut them. It doesn't matter. No skin off your back. And guess what? No Spencer Jones giving up. No Pereira. Right. It's a low risk high reward. It starts you know pissing off the entire team.
00:27:39
Speaker
with the FM, with the arm. I agree. Gave up nothing. Gave up that impossible something. It's totally fine with me. I just want to see Torres out on his ass. That's all I want to say. Well, I don't even know who would sign him. Maybe Chicago next year, because... Oh, somebody will sign him. It's not a question of if. it's Somebody will. Did we ever do the bus question on this pod, Josh?
00:28:02
Speaker
I don't know if we did. The four-person bus that we're sending off into the sea? it's not all i No, hold on, no. that's not That's not what it was. First of all, it wasn't a bus. It was if you had a car that could fit four people then who would be of on the car that was getting yeah that was being pushed out of New York State and never allowed to return. Right. and right and and Obviously, there was a question of who was driving and what seat they were in. Yeah, Glaber Torres is now on the roof of that car.
00:28:28
Speaker
Oh yeah. On the roof, he's not even allowed to sit. He's not even allowed a seat. They just strapped him onto the roof. Like a couch you're taking down the road, huh? We have two empty seats in that car and he's still, he's in the trunk or the roof. Damn. There's a reason it's a cashman phone. Well, I think the last time we did this, we said Donaldson was in this car. Oh yeah.
00:28:52
Speaker
I think Rodon was up there. each of if I think obviously obviously Boone is driving because it's right in front of us. he's so in front of it Mountain is right in front of us. yeah
00:29:05
Speaker
yeah But hey, what's right in front of see me guys, the roads right in front of us as he's crashing into a tree waves. That's literally a perfect metaphor for this team. Yeah. Yeah. We can switch gears here to the other New York team.
00:29:19
Speaker
It's surprising deadline for the Mets. I feel like they kind of just did nothing I mean, they're in the wild card race, but who knows if they're really trying to you know, get um I mean get rid of any

Mets and Dodgers Trade Moves

00:29:29
Speaker
assets. So they got Blackburn from the A's brass bond or lever from the Marlins and another reliever Tyler Zuber it kind of just feels like I'm nothing deadline for them and I'm not and obviously Pete didn't get moved and I know it wasn't gonna get moved but you couldn't move him right now. Yeah while the team's playing I mean Again, it's the same question with the Yankees. What else was there to really do? Like school didn't move crochet obviously didn't move Yeah, and Steve Cohen was not gonna put up with the antics that crochet was putting on which I'm sure about later on Yeah, everybody wanted pitching and all the sellers were all like, okay Well, you guys have a bidding war and then none of them on the move except flirty. Yeah, and other than the Yankees I've watched them met spy closer than any other team just like go into the games and stuff the believers of that team are disgraceful
00:30:16
Speaker
They had beef up the bullpen. That's both their baby. They hit the needs. I mean Adrian Houser was horrible and um Jake Deakman was horrible. They got rid of both of them and they got better guys in I mean like again, like who else was really there? They got a veteran baton winker. That's cool.
00:30:36
Speaker
What else was there? Like, Zac Eflin stinks. I... What? Yeah, very, very mediocre picture of us. He stinks. He actually stinks. I'll give him to you for 10 cents on the dollar. And seriously, offer me like half your... Offer me half of any one of half your guys and I'll take them.
00:30:57
Speaker
Blackburn could be a good pitcher, you know, if he's just not on the athletics. But, but but he's, but he's the other one where he could be a fringy montage where he becomes trash or, you know, actually becomes a decent pitcher. But I did think they would try to go aggressive for a starter after Senga went down. And I was at that game and just the complete moment, like Senga looked nasty.
00:31:18
Speaker
and I was on the third baseline, standing room only, and you just see the fourth ball move so differently than really any other pitch you you'd ever see. But, and then all of a sudden, all that momentum, every meth band in that building, that pulse, it was beating, it was the only thing, a merit to anything I've been in person with, was when Aaron Rodgers came out with the American flag, and then four plays later. Just the mood being so hyped, just dead, it's a snap of a finger.
00:31:48
Speaker
It was it was so ear and every meant like it was just dead and I Really thought that they were gonna try to go for someone a little bit better than black room. But again, who was up? Yeah, I mean flarity. No, it Cohen wasn't gonna touch him if he didn't touch Correa Yeah like
00:32:09
Speaker
Yeah, I mean there's definitely the concerns about Florida's health and then and i mean I Mean you had to move heavens and earth to get school. Let's be real. Yeah, like he like he wasn't going unless you were giving up something you're giving up Jackson holiday and other players. Yeah, and Honestly, he's worth every penny and more school is awesome. Oh, yeah I mean he's going to be a top 10 pitcher in baseball for a long time getting to watch him He's one that I just hope can stay like he's so fun to watch. I I wonder who picked him to win Cy Young this year? I know you did. Oh, I don't know. I didn't laugh at you. I saw the odds. It was just I, you know, I didn't know them. So I'm like, I'm not going to pick them. But who picked them up in like the sixth or seventh round in fantasy, too? All right, we get it. Now you're making me hate them, man. Why? The real question is, did you bet on it?
00:33:02
Speaker
Right. No, I did not. I did not bet on it. This podcast is brought to you by... We Wish. No. All right. Arguably... I don't know. i What do you think about the Dodgers being one of the biggest winners? Obviously, Jack Flaherty. They only gave up their number 8 in 22 ranked prospects in return for him. They got Kevin Kiermaier.
00:33:23
Speaker
I know he's not as good anymore. That's a very underrated pick up to them. That's a defensive pick up. That's a very defensive pick up for them. That's a very good pick up for them. Tommy Edmond, Michael Kopeck, Ahmed Rizzario. Really big haul for him this year. Clearly an all in push. They push every year. You gotta. When all the money's deferred, what's the money? What is money? It means nothing. Why not?
00:33:45
Speaker
i mean I mean, we said it at the beginning of the year. If they don't win, it's a failure. And guess what? the set So they went and they got guys to try to win. but Their pitching staff is absolutely decimated. They better go win every game 10 to 9. Yeah. Yeah, I think you had to do that. I agree. it's But it's thanks for baseball. But I mean, who knows? I mean, they they're going to choke every year like they always do. I'm actually not even intimidated by the Dodgers right now. Yeah. yeah like I don't know.
00:34:13
Speaker
Once the rotation gets healthy, I mean, Buehler is terrible now. I don't know what happened to him. Two Tommy Joneses, what happened? I feel so awful. So the Phillies, they got outfielder Austin Hates from the Orioles. They got a closer, too. Those are the two big deals. like Finally, Zaki, you could be happy. You have a closer. Oh. that Yeah, Alvarado moving to the eighth inning. Thank god. What else? Wow, Buehler's back head. Oh, my god.
00:34:44
Speaker
what What happened to Bueller? Yeah, he's not bad, dude. Yeah, he's not bad. He hasn't played in a month and a half. Yeah, he's been hard again. Yeah. This poor guy, Josh Bell, I think gets traded at the deadline every year. I feel like he's been on seven different teams now. Yeah, because he should have been a really good player, and he could never figure it out. Yeah. He's a big switch-hitting first baseman and he with power, and he just never figured it out. D-Max picked him up this year, so we'll see how that goes.
00:35:13
Speaker
I mean, that's a good enough for them, too. I mean, they only got him because share first baseman's heart. Yeah. but Christian Walker being out. That's tough. I mean, you he's a he's good in both the field and with the bat. He was a borderline like top 10 MVP guy this year, too. Yeah.
00:35:29
Speaker
So that's a tough loss, but Josh Bell's a vet. He can fill the fort for a month or two um once he gets back. I think the Diamondbacks, I feel good about them. I picked them to win the World Series. They struggled to start. They're starting to play a little bit better now. And I i don't know if they're going to win the World Series, but they're having a solid season. Yeah, I agree.
00:35:51
Speaker
um Andre still brought in a ton of people and obviously Tanner Scott the biggest probably the best closer on the market I mean Miami was just having a fire sale, but they made some good moves So that's the guy I was torn about that like part of me was like the Angie should have gotten him or a co-packer Kyle Finnegan But at the end of day, would you have really felt better? Knowing one of those guys was coming in the clothes like there's just small sample sizes me honestly Maybe a little bit, because Clay Holmes, I just have no faith anymore. A little, but is it like is it one that you're going to feel that much better about? I mean, I i don't have a lot of faith in closers in general, because you have one good year and then they fall off. Or they're having a good year in a small market and they go to New York and they fall off. but That's kind of like what the Phillies did, because Alvarado, solid, solid. He's fine closer. He's he's kind of just average. Now he's a great planning dude. So it makes you feel a little bit better about things.
00:36:47
Speaker
Yeah, I mean I'd like to pick up Finnegan when he's a free agent in a couple of years Yeah, I think that would be a solid pickup for us But until then like we fill in the fort and you know Hope that someone other than Holmes can take the closer role The Rays probably them in the White Sox at least the White Sox trying to be active But the Rays I think the biggest name might be Randy Jazz and Randy are probably the biggest names that moved Yeah Just a shame because Randy not having the greatest year in the world, but hopefully, I mean, Seattle needs offense because that pitching is amazing over there. So hopefully you can eat up for them. Randy is such a weird player, man. He is. Like he is probably on the Mount Rushmore of all time baseball players that the stats don't match the name. Like at all.
00:37:41
Speaker
You're talking about six years in the league, one All-Star team, 256 career average, 87 home runs, and 293 runs batted in with 96 home bases. And he's 29. So it doesn't... You'd think he was a lot... you think You'd think he'd have a lot better stats. And then he shows up in October, which is what they picked him up for. Yeah. Ray has also traded Eflin.
00:38:09
Speaker
i think parades and luckywares you suck anyway seriously anybody want eflin make an offer and keep it low and you'll get him i'm done with eflin okay um what else blue jays traded ikf and kakuchi which i thought was funny i love that guy one of my favorite players hey I love you see Kikuchi. I know you do. I love him. I love him. I love him. I just hate this guy. Yeah. Yeah. but He's been like, uh, you, you start off, you're really hot. And then the last like 10 starts or so have been kind of trash and they had a good start. This first start, the new team was, it was really good. Yes. Yeah. It was just bad. Kikuchi's hot. Yeah. I feel you. Yeah.
00:38:56
Speaker
believe that
00:39:00
Speaker
Good Lord. But yeah, we can talk about the White Sox a little bit. They did good with Fedi. I know they were going to move him. I kind of wanted him, but it's fine. cost yeah and you know one i would like to i agree ila yemenis to the orioles as well um minutes or you say He's another guy who's never figured it out. Yeah.
00:39:22
Speaker
Well, maybe he's playing out as an actual team where he's not distracted by the dumb, stupid things that go on. house like Yeah. I mean, again, the cancer theory. Yeah. You're not, you're not a cancer. You're the scrumpled employee. Unfortunately for a him, he has to hit the ball about 400 feet to left field to get it out. Right. Um, and then obviously everybody wanted crochet. Crochet didn't end up moving and that that's partly because of his own doing. He said some really dumb things about.
00:39:49
Speaker
If he's pitching in October, he needs to have an extension. But how dumb was it? ah Well, now iss he's still on the white sock. Okay, but he's starting. He doesn't have to move. he doesn't have to I don't know if he has kids. We wouldn't have to take the kids out of school. And yeah he's making the same money to get an extra two months off. Is is it that crazy?
00:40:15
Speaker
to then beat your arm out in October and then never pit and never get more contract that you should get? I mean, look, is he worth the contract? No. Would I have traded for him under these circumstances? No. I mean, he's probably saying what almost every other pitcher is thinking in his position. Right. If you want me to go more innings than I've ever pitched in my life, you better pay me now because if I get hurt, I'm never going to get bit. Right. I mean, i I wouldn't take the bait if I was a team. I don't blame him for trying it at all.
00:40:44
Speaker
i only do I mean, he's making $800,000 this year. Oh, wow. I i would do it too. And he's only in his third year of service time. I didn't know that. So he's arbitration eligible this year. He's not and a free agent until 2027 minimum. Wow. I would do exactly. I mean, I don't know if I would do exactly what he did because I'd probably be miserable where he is, but I get it. Yeah. I can't blame him. I guess you're right.
00:41:14
Speaker
um
00:41:17
Speaker
I think that was, you know, most of the big hits that I thought of and anything else that you boys wanted to bring up. They're gonna get moved. Fairbanks gonna get moved. Wish we could have seen in school well get moved. But I get it. I mean, I i sure as hell wouldn't trade them if I had them. And the Tigers aren't that far away because they're in a weak division. Yeah. You know, I can see them contending in a year or two. I mean, I know wildcard race is just nuts right now.

Aaron Judge's Legacy

00:41:49
Speaker
you know None of these prospects that you would be getting back or I mean, I shouldn't say none, but the chances of any of those prospects turning into a level of scuba is low. Yeah. I agree.
00:42:06
Speaker
Anything else at all?
00:42:10
Speaker
Um, can we just talk for a second? um I don't mean to make it like Yankee heavy because I know that like we have such a widespread diverse audience. Um, when by that, I mean, Philly's fans from you. and Um, can we just talk for a second about just what Aaron Joe just doing? yeah then He intentionally walked with, you know, nobody out. What are we doing here?
00:42:34
Speaker
Dude, it's kind of unbelievable. It's just Barry Bonds-esque, right? It's just actually crazy. Well, I'll put it to you this way. So Aaron Judge hit his 298th home run a couple of days ago. And this is 945th game. Fastest ever hit 300 home runs was Ralph Keiner, 1,087 games. Wow. So he's two away from breaking that record in well over 100 games. Yeah.
00:43:01
Speaker
I mean it just thinks what if like he could have found this sooner than 25 and the stats he would have put up but he's another guy who's gonna have a very interesting Hall of Fame case and all of a sudden done I mean I wouldn't put him in now but I mean, by the time things end. Also, this is with him having an abysmal like April and early May. Right. Dude, he was hitting like 180 in the meeting of the season. Yeah. Like a month of the season and people were calling for his head. Yeah. Which is why you shouldn't be doing that. But that's decided but actually, you know what? He did all this and we didn't even give him a standing ovation for it. I know, right? Wow. that Wow. That's crazy. Amazing. Accountability does well for a captain. Oh oh my God. yeah
00:43:47
Speaker
It's man's game. But yeah, it's it's just kind of unbelievable. And it almost seems like unfair. like And what other game can you immediately remove the other person's best player? Like imagine in like, in just like basketball or something, if you were just like, oh, LeBron or Steph, or like, you can't touch the ball at all or something. Close thing I could think of is Hackishack. But even that, I mean, if you have a center, if you shoot free throws, it doesn't do anything.
00:44:17
Speaker
Yeah, it's just kind of unbelievable that that happened. And that's why in baseball you can't have only one good player. Yeah. Look at the Angels. Yep. Yeah. Who I'm seeing twice tomorrow now. Congratulations. And no mic trout. No mic trout. That's fine. i already I drove to Philly to see him. He hasn't played one inning of Yankee baseball or met baseball since. That was three years ago, by the way.
00:44:47
Speaker
Oh my god. Yeah. um Sounds about right. That's why you make the drive sometimes. Yeah. But yeah, it's historic. It's just unbelievable. And it's ah it's it would be a real shame if he doesn't win a chip for this time here, as he means one. Yeah. I mean, at absolute worst, though, he's our generation's Dom Addingly. Yep. It's like he signed the contract. He cemented that. Yeah. He'll be the king of but New York baseball for years to come. Yep.
00:45:17
Speaker
Unless, of course, they met sign Soto, which then we have a competition.
00:45:24
Speaker
Soto will go with whoever ra offers him the most money. It is that simple. Yeah, it is that simple. So Steinbrenner, better hand in the blank check. Or ship Stanton out somewhere else. So you better get that blank check. We don't have to move Stanton.
00:45:48
Speaker
Give him the money. I'm going to be spending probably 75 bucks tomorrow in chicken buckets. So you can give him some money. Go ahead. He's not going to kill you. Jesus. I love the chicken buckets, Mom. Ridiculous.
00:46:08
Speaker
And thank you for listening to this segmented episode of Championship War Bus. Thank you for your patience as we go through this journey. But we will see you next time for 1929, a couple weeks. So we'll see you then. Peace.
